This week’s initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.

敬語の5分類｜The 5 Types of keigo

In the Japanese language it is possible to show respect towards another person by replacing words, mostly verbs, with politer equivalents. This can be done by using elevating expressions for the actions of your superior or degrading expressions for your own actions.

Overview: Verb Formation Rules for sonkeigo 尊敬語, kenjōgo I 謙譲語Ⅰ and kenjōgo II 謙譲語Ⅱ (also known as teichōgo 丁重語).

In a guideline released by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs in the year 2007 keigo has been divided into five types: 尊敬語・謙譲語Ⅰ・謙譲語Ⅱ（丁重語）・丁寧語・美化語. The first three types demonstrate the most complex rules, hence why I summarized them in the chart above for a quick overview. Hereafter, you can find thorough introductions to each type.

尊敬語｜Respectful Language

Sonkeigo is the most basic method to pay special respect towards a teacher, a superior or a client. This can be done by switching the verb (refering to the action of your superior) with its passive form.

e.g.　読みます　→　読まれます

However, the degree of politeness isn't that high. Hence, it is important to learn the following formation rules as well:

１）特定形｜Special forms

Some verbs have a fixed forms. If a verb has a special form it is to be used.¹

e.g.　いる・行く・来る　→　いらっしゃいます

２）サ変動詞＋なさいます

In this context サ変動詞 refers to nominal verbs. Basically, nouns that can be turned into verbs by adding する. It is possible to add お or ご infront of the verb but it can be also omitted if unsure which prefix is the right one.

e.g.　出発する　 →　（ご）出発なさいます

３）お＋Ⅴます＋になります

This formation rule is for all verbs that do not belong into either of the two categories above. Omitting ます leaves the so-called renyōkei 連用形 or conjunctive form of the verb. Here, the prefix added is always お.

e.g.　待ちます　→　お待ちになります

It is not uncommon to apply this formation rule to サ変動詞 as well. Depending on the nominal verb お needs to be changed to ご.

e.g.　参加する　→　ご参加になります

However, there are exceptions. Some nominal verbs are not idiomatic and end up sounding unnatural to native ears.

e.g.　運転する　→　ご運転になります　✕ 運転する　→　運転なさいます〇

謙譲語 Ⅰ｜Humble Language I

Kenjōgo I + II have the opposite effect of sonkeigo. They degrade one's status and are therefore applied only to your own actions or the actions of someone from your inner circle (e.g. a co-worker, or a family member).

In contrast to kenjōgo II, kenjōgo I is used when your action (or the action of someone from your circle) is directed at the person you want to pay respect to. It is also used when you do something for said person.

The formation rules are as listed below:

１）特定形｜Special forms

Some verbs have a fixed forms. If a verb has a special form it is to be used.¹

e.g.　言う　→　申し上げます

The translation would be "saying sth. to sb." or "telling sb. sth." implying that your action is directed at the person you want to pay respect to.

２）お・ご＋サ変動詞＋します

Again, there are some verbs that sound unnatural when this formation is applied.

e.g.　ご運転します　✕

In this case, you can formulate the sentence with ～させていただきます or switch to kenjōgo II.

e.g.　運転させていただきます　〇運転いたします　〇

Note that, depending on the situation ～させていただきます might give of the impression that you are putting yourself down too much. This can result in making your counterpart feel uncomfortable.

３）お＋Ⅴます＋します

e.g.　伝える　→　お伝えします

謙譲語 Ⅱ｜Humble Language II

Kenjōgo II is used when your own action is unconnected to the person you want to pay respect to. Therefore, this type of language can often be found in anouncements, news reports or broadcasts elevating its audience. At train stations one often repeated phrase is:

e.g.　もうすぐ電車が来る　→　まもなく電車が参ります

In the example above you can see that not only the verb has been switched with a politer equivalent, but the adverb as well. There are many words that can be switched with politer versions. Unlike verbs, they do not need to be inflected and can be studied like regular vocabulary.

It can also be pointed out that the action does not have to be conducted by the speaker, but can be an object (like in the example above) or a third party as well.

The formation rules are:

１）特定形

Some verbs have a fixed forms. If a verb has a special form it is to be used.¹

e.g.　言う　→　申します　(as in 私は◯◯と申します)

When introducing yourself you simly "say" or "state" your name. This is not considered an action that is directed at the person you want to pay respect to, hence it falls into the category of kenjōgo II.

２）サ変動詞＋いたします

e.g.　応募する　→　応募いたします

３）丁寧語

For all verbs that do not fall under the categories above, teineigo is used, or in other words the です・ます form.

e.g.　話す　→　話します

In case the ～ている form is used, the degree of politeness can be elevated by replacing it with ～ております which is the special form of いる.

丁寧語｜Polite Language

Teineigo is the neutral polite language. You're probably already familiar with this one, since this is the most foolproof way of speaking politely due to its absence of any kind of seesaw principle. It is used everywhere outside of your circle of friends and the safest way to talk to strangers. However, in certain situations it is expected to raise the level of politeness.

e.g.　聞く　→　聞きます

美化語｜Refined Language

There is a certain number of words, especially nouns, that can be turned into more elegant sounding versions. It can be easily understood by just looking at some examples.

e.g.　金　→　お金酒　→　お酒料理　→　ご料理米　 →　お米散歩 →　お散歩

Adding the respective prefix お or ご takes away the roughness of a word. This, however, can only be done with a few selected words. Refined words are commonly used in both formal and informal speech.

oh joyous day! I have found more morsels of life new to my eyes!

these little scurrying fellows are pauropods, one of the four classes within the phylum Myriapoda (the others being centipedes, millipedes, and symphylans).

pauropods are the tiniest in size of them all, but scamper gracefully through their gardens of loam with outsized zest for life. look at ‘em go. angels are colorless tubes zipping around through the soil, fueled by detritus, eyeless and loving it.

endearingly, I'm not the first to be enamored with these little beauties:

gonna just ignore what he said about the other myriapods just because I love pauropods so much right now, and he was so right about them.

here is an adorable video (of much higher quality than my own) of one of these guys running around! note the unique branched antennae.

I’ve wanted to find pauropods for a while and finally had the time to look closely at a single piece of mulch from a compost heap, and it was a whole pauropod town!

despite an impressive diversity—830 species isn’t too shabby—and although pauropods are pretty much everywhere, found wherever there is moist soil or leaf litter, I’m guessing most people will never even hear of one… but now you have! think of the cheerful pauropod again sometime, please. they deserve a little love, even if they’re already quite content with their particles and crevices.

運動がてら自転車で(電動ですがね)を使って、1時間かけてマンハッタンのアッパーウェストサイドにあるカフェにきました！　🥳

久しぶりに、めちゃくちゃ気に入ったお店見つけて嬉し〜！　🥰☕️🥐

アボカドトーストとグルテンフリーのバナナブレッドを頼んだら、どちらも何これって⁉️てくらい美味しくて感激! 🤩　(単に運動後でお腹すいてたからかも？)

E-biked to UWS in Manhattan today (took 1hr! very good exercise…) 🚴🏼‍♀️💨 and stopped at this cute coffee shop!

I had the best ever Gluten Free Banana bread and avocado toast!!! 🥑🍞🍳🥐 Incredibly Delicious!!!!!

Super happy that I found my new favorite place to have good cappuccino and delicious treats!

Already can’t wait to go back!!! 😆

跟孩子一起動起來籃球國手高錦瑋與網紅「彼得爸與蘇珊媽」的親子籃球課

親子運動好處多，不僅能使孩子好好釋放體力，對於孩子肢體發展，以及親子關係都有極佳的幫助。配合四月兒童節，教育部體育署「i運動」youtube頻道於四月每週推出《i運動線上教練課》親子籃球篇，邀請籃球國手高錦瑋擔任講師，指導知名親子網紅「彼得爸與蘇珊媽」如何陪著孩子學習籃球，進而感受籃球的樂趣並維持運動的好習慣。

高錦瑋去(112)年在成都世大運大放異彩，今(113)年二月也首度穿上成人國家隊球衣，征戰亞洲盃男籃資格賽。目前高錦瑋為t1台啤永豐雲豹後衛，在職籃新人年就達成100助攻的里程碑，除了是t1本季新人王熱門人選，他也有望能幫助球隊進到季後賽朝冠軍邁進。

來自花蓮的高錦瑋從幼稚園開始接觸籃球，他提到部落的小朋友感情非常好，常常會聚在一起打籃球，透過觀察、模仿厲害的同儕，他開啟往後的籃球之旅。高錦瑋常出席公益活動指導小朋友，此次擔任《i運動線上教練課》講師，化身「小高教練」，帶著彼得爸和他的二兒子kyle操作親子籃球，從最基礎的熱身、運球、傳球到投籃，專業指導又趣味十足。高錦瑋分享：「kyle很認真聽、學很快，彼得爸也非常有耐心教小朋友。」

親子網紅「彼得爸與蘇珊媽」去年晉升三寶爸，這次帶著5歲的kyle跟「小高教練」學籃球。原先就喜愛棒球、籃球的彼得爸，透過陪孩子運動的過程，使孩子漸漸愛上運動，例如最近孩子喜歡騎車，他就帶著小寶貝們挑戰騎7公里，再進階到10公里。彼得爸提到，他的夢想是未來兩個兒子都可以陪爸爸打球，一起欣賞球賽。看著小寶貝學籃球學得很快，加上教練稱讚有天分，彼得爸笑說離夢想越來越近了。

學習新的運動項目的過程中，小朋友難免受挫，因而無法控制情緒。彼得爸建議家長們多一點耐心、多引導，可能剛開始表現還沒那麼��，可以試著讓小朋友放鬆休息，或者是換別的運動嘗試一下，休息後再回來做原本的運動，搞不好會有不同的身體記憶，也會表現得很好。

天氣逐漸回暖，連假期間推薦家長們，帶著孩子從事戶外運動，除培養孩子良好的運動習慣外，親子感情也能因而升溫。

Jin makes a sad face when he says it won't last forever. Now if only I had the means to see that expression. Someday. Maybe. He knows that once your curse is broken you'll probably go back to your ordinary life. If your curse can't be broken you'll die. And if you, for some reason, continue to stay at Darkwick even after being cured, he'll be a fourth year next year--he's gonna go off to do field work. Eventually he'll work in the highest levels of Darkwick's industrial complex and eventually he'll take his father's place as the president. With all of this, there's no way you'll be able to be together, no matter what. This is a short lived burst of happiness and attachment for him. It means a lot more to him than you realize.

see how this is worded differently from when he asks you to stay over because 'your house is too far away'? even when he's trying to be sweet to you, as long as he maintains your power imbalance he feels comfortable--he has something over you here--but trying to lay his feelings bare, just saying 'i want you to stay with me', that's so much more than he's used to saying.

10 traditional characters that I didn't know existed

In 2023 I started learning to write traditional characters by hand, so I've been paying extra attention to differences between traditional and simplified forms. In some cases, I didn't even realize the traditional and simplified forms were different!

Here are 10 sets of simplified and traditional characters with subtle differences, 8 of which I only discovered recently. Definitions are adapted from MDBG.

（1）抛 | 拋 pāo

The difference is SO subtle with this one. I have to hold the screen 3 inches from my face to see it. The simplified version has 7 strokes, but the traditional version has 8.

抛 | 拋 pāo - to throw / to toss / to fling / to cast / to abandon

抛弃 | 拋棄 pāoqì - to abandon / to discard / to renounce / to dump (sb) 抛开 | 拋開 pāokāi - to throw out / to get rid of 抛物线 | 拋物線 pāowùxiàn - parabola

（2）滚 | 滾 gǔn

I actually prefer the traditional version, particularly when I'm writing by hand. When I write the simplified version, the 衣 strokes on the bottom always looks awkward under 公 to me.

滚 | 滾 gǔn - to boil / to roll / to take a hike / get lost!

摇滚 | 搖滾 yáogǔn - rock 'n' roll (music) / to rock / to fall off 滚开 | 滾開 gǔnkāi - to boil (of liquid) / boiling hot / Get out! / Go away! 滚烫 | 滾燙 gǔntàng - boiling / scalding 打滚 | 打滾 dǎgǔn - to roll about

（3）匀 | 勻 yún

I think these look pretty much the same when handwritten, but on the computer they are distinct. I definitely prefer how the simplified one looks.

匀 | 勻 yún - even / well-distributed / uniform / to distribute evenly / to share

均匀 | 均勻 jūnyún - even / well-distributed / homogeneous / well-proportioned (figure, body etc)

（4）叙 | 敘 xù

叙 | 敘 xù - to narrate / to chat

叙述 | 敘述 xùshù - to relate (a story or information) / to tell or talk about / to recount / narration / telling / narrative / account 叙事 | 敘事 xùshì - narrative

（5）奥 | 奧 ào

奥 | 奧 ào - obscure / mysterious

It really bugs me that 奥 has a different traditional form, but 澳 (as in 澳门 Macao) does not!

深奥 | 深奧 shēn'ào - profound / abstruse / recondite / profoundly 奥运会 | 奧運會 Àoyùnhuì - Olympic Games; the Olympics (abbr. for 奥林匹克运动会 | 奧林匹克運動會) 奥利给 | 奧利給 àolìgěi - come on, you can do it!

（6）厨 | 廚 chú

厨 | 廚 chú - kitchen

厨房 | 廚房 chúfáng - kitchen 厨师 | 廚師 chúshī - cook / chef 厨艺 | 廚藝 chúyì - cooking skills / culinary talent

Other similar cases: 厮 | 廝 sī - (bound form) together; each other / (bound form) male servant / (bound form) dude; so-and-so 厢 | 廂 xiāng - box (in theater) / side room / side 厦 | 廈 shà - tall building / mansion / rear annex / lean-to / also pr. xià

（7）刹 | 剎 chà/shā

Whether the bottom looks like 朩 or 木 seems to be somewhat stylistic and can vary by font. But the little 点 is a consistent difference.

刹 | 剎 chà - used to transcribe several words originally from Sanskrit

刹那 | 剎那 chànà - an instant (Sanskrit: ksana); split second; the twinkling of an eye

刹 | 剎 shā - to brake

刹车 | 剎車 shāchē - to brake (when driving) / to stop / to switch off / to check (bad habits) / a brake

（8）侣 | 侶 lǚ

侣 | 侶 lǚ - companion

伴侣 | 伴侶 bànlǚ - companion / mate / partner 情侣 | 情侶 qínglǚ - sweethearts / lovers

Other similar cases: 宫 | 宮 gōng - palace / temple / castration (as corporal punishment) / first note in pentatonic scale 吕 | 呂 lǚ - pitchpipe, pitch standard, one of the twelve semitones in the traditional tone system / surname Lǚ

（9）别 | 別 bié

I've known about the traditional form of this character for a while now, but to be honest, it still looks like 别 written incorrectly to me...sorry.

别 | 別 bié - to leave; to part (from) / (literary) to differentiate; to distinguish / (bound form) other; another; different / don't …! / to fasten with a pin or clip / to stick in; to insert (in order to hinder movement) / (noun suffix) category
