#hot pagan takes
Text
As a pagan myself, so many pagans need to stop appropriating history to ft the narrative that paganism is somehow a superior religion.
And I mean this for like... ignoring that queer people were NOT accepted in Ancient Greece, relationships between grown men and boys were. So the love stories about how Achilles and Patroclus were in love, sure they were together, but one of them was a kid, they would not have been together with both as adults.
The superiority complex really sucks ass, because you don't need it, it causes the pipeline from paganism to alt right behaviour and beliefs. The superiority complex is inherently problematic and this isn't about being a reconstructionist or whatever, but we need to listen to history to avoid making statements that support some sort of moral superiority that straight up doesn't exist.
Another thing thats useful to accept, a lot of the songs we say were initially pagan were not. Because pagan was a slur used initially by the romans to insult and persecute those who believed in multiple deities, no pagan from the times where paganism was culturally accepted would be calling themselves pagan, the word is a modern reclamation.
Pagans are not better or worse than any other religious group.
(To clarify, yes of course pagans were prosecuted by Christians, thats not the debate, the problem is the superiority complex because it just leads to the alt right pipelone)

Unpopular Opinion Time
The doodle you make or the picrew you use, the poorly executed poetry or basic bare bones prayer will ALWAYS be better than AI generated offerings.
I am sick of having my feed flooded with practitioners, pagans and other polytheists using AI. Specifically deities like Brigid should never be offered AI in my opinion, it’s essentially a slap in the face.
AI generated spells aren’t shit, it’s what a computer assumes will work based off of what it can gather from internet trends and research. MAKE IT YOURSELF, ask a human for help anything but AI.
There is no place for Artificial Intelligence in these spaces.

Im gonna say something that some of you arent gonna like.
Witchcraft can be so simple if you let it be.
Don't have clay to make a poppet. Try play doh
Don't have wax to seal a jar. Try glue
Can't cleanse with smoke. Try sound cleansing.
Don't have tarot cards. Try reading playing cards.
Spells can be simple too! I think being online and having an online community is great but it also deters beginers from even starting.

If Deities came to speak with humans face-to-face, most modern polytheists would be wrong.
If called down, Deities would actually be capable of making our lives easier when it comes to working with Them and listening for Their voices. The reason why it’s so hard for people to listen for the Gods is because people don’t necessarily know how important it is to develop their own personal relationship with the Divine.
We are so, so worried about being wrong and we look to other people to tell us which way we go. But there are very few experienced practitioners, even fewer effective teachers (if any at this point) and it is the blind leading the blind.
In all of my years of working with Loki, every single time I had a problem with discernment, it was always due to other people telling me I’m wrong or that their opinion was more important than my intuition. And I believed them because they seemed more knowledgeable. My beliefs I held strongly to in the beginning of my devotion to Him were always bent down by other people thinking they know more than me even though years later, they turned out to be truer than the thoughts I had after I was in a community.
You can call it beginner’s luck, but after years of seeking community, His voice became quieter and quieter. It was when I left pagan groups that I became explicitly aware of what He actually wanted from me. Confirmations started happening, the energy became denser, and things just magically started to work out that never did before and I could hear His voice speak to me in ways I didn’t think were possible prior to this reawakening.
I’m not saying we should be without community, but community resources need to be rewritten to accommodate the fact that us in the West know very little about working with the Gods. We used to. But we have no context for it anymore within society.
We can try to reconstruct a dead culture because you feel like yours is lacking but unless you’re actually receiving direct correspondence with the Divine, you will likely be unlucky in finding Their truest nature.

Do the gods really want to “work” with us?
I'm bringing you, as always, a controversial take because I love me a good debate lol
I'm gonna be honest, I never felt like the gods were giving me signs that they wanna work with me. Why would they? If we look at historical texts (both myths and real life) the gods usually took interest in someone that
1. Was very beautiful
2. Was very skilled or well known for something, like being the best poet, the best ruler, the best athlete, the best seamstress... You get the point.
3. A person that was very pious which, let's be real, most of us hardly are (it's not like we can do better considering the current climate).
So ever since I started in this practice I thought why would the gods want to work with me, a mid (I don't use this term as an insult) 19 year-old girl from a small Mediterranean town that isn't excellent at anything in particular and that has just taken interest in this path like a month ago?
I've always felt like it was actually the other way around. When we need to reach a deity to get better at something, our subconscious mind make us notice things that were there all the time but we really didn't notice. So when I needed to reach Diana I noticed I'd gotten my period on a full moon. But this probably had happened other times before, I just didn't notice.
This doesn't mean once we reach these deities they don't give us signs, as we have already presented ourselves to them and we now have tools that our ancestors didn't have so we don't need priests to contact the divine. But I think we're making ourselves more important than we are by thinking the gods have an innate interest in us before we even think of contacting them.
What do you think? I also would love to know the opinion of other polytheists outside the Greek and Roman pantheons so I can get more perspectives on this!

I hate to have to be this brutally blunt, but unfortunately, some of y'all are incredibly naive when it comes to these things. So, reality check time.
White supremacy is a problem in the modern witch and Pagan communities. And the way to take care of this problem is not by cutting white supremacists slacks, holding their hands, and hoping you can point them to the light. To fight white supremacy means being openly hostile to it, to give it no room to grow and fester, to give it no chance to continue thriving.
Jews, Muslims, BIPOC, ethnic minorities, all are getting actively hate crimed as we speak. We literally don't have the time nor the luxury to take any other approach.

moon water works like holy water for me. i charge one bottle and keep adding to it as it runs low. i haven't charged water with lunar energy for months.
tbh that's actually genius! means you don't have to do the ritual every month which honestly feels like such a chore for me. i might nab this idea x

Ouija board is a divination method
It's been a while since I used mine, but once communication is fluid, it's just like tarot cards.
I ask simple things usually. There's this entity (not negative, I just never asked what it is) that shows up everytime & helps. It even cuts communication when I feel some bad presence poke through. I never had an issue with my safety.
I am aware bad things can/have happen.ed. Ouija boards are the most accessible and ready to use communication method even though it requires cleansing & protection just like anything else.
Be safe out there! ✨☀️

Personal hot take I hate when people treat their gods like their imaginary friends.
"She chose this song" did fucking Athena or Persephone or Morrígan choose that song, or did you put it on? Sure you might hope she liked it but like... she did not choose the song and through divine influence tell you to put on fucking Taylor swift. She's a god.

Unpopular Opinions Pt.2
Having beginner spaces is important, however right now there is a lack of good advanced and intermediate spaces.
And I understand that with the rise of magic in social media that we’re going to have a disproportionate amount of beginners to advanced individuals.
It is just frustrating, I wish there were more active spaces for this sort of thing. When there isn’t that community for the rest of us, we aren’t being creatively challenged as a collective anymore. There’s a lack of those sort of heavy discussions and conversations that keep us growing as practitioners. Idk I’m just rambling out of frustration.
If anyone knows or any good ones please let me know.
All my love, Psychopomp

my takes on religion
i know, it’s a very hot topic (always has been) and pretty bold thing to talk about on the internet given how people are on here, but i wanted to share some thoughts. i don’t think i’m inherently right on this and i’m not open to debate because that’s not the point of this, i’m just putting some thoughts out there.
i was raised Episcopalian and Presbyterian, two pretty open denominations of christianity. i went to an episcopal school from kindergarten to 8th grade, and i studied religion the whole time i was there. i’m elementary school, we learned the basics of the bible and christian beliefs. in middle school we learned more in depth about the more complex parts of religion. i’m 8th grade i took a class called world religions, the purpose of which was to learn about religions outside of our own.
the class was taught by an episcopal man, and the denomination is known for its openness to other religions. we learned about all the big brand name religions, but one thing in particular stick with me. i was taught that the purpose of religion was to provide guidance and stability to people. not to be right or worship the one true god, but to give oneself purpose.
at the same time, i labeled myself as agnostic and attending weekly meetings with my latin teacher to discuss religion and what it meant to me. she also was agnostic, but in a way i wasn’t familiar with. she believed that all religions were equally true, but none of them got it quite right. she said that there was a higher power, but nobody knew what it was.
so now you have the history and context, here’s what i believe. all religions are true and correct, even if they contradict one another. there is evidence for and against every religion that exists, believers and haters for and sacred text. and everybody is right. the christian God, i believe, is the one true all powerful God for christians. those who hold polytheistic beliefs are right too.
i practice paganism because it brings me joy, purpose, guidance, and gratitude. and i believe that anything that does so for any person is true and real. when we discuss things on such a large scale as God and what created the universe, we have to understand that both everything and nothing can be true at the same time. it’s hard to process in a little human brain, but religion should be hard to understand. a being, or beings, that are on a higher plane of existence should exist in a more complex way than we do.
i think it would be crazy if there was just a guy up there who made the universe. what was he doing before? what will he do after? these questions plagued me for years as i was raised in the christian faith, and that was the reason i had a hard time believing. but seeing it as something so beautifully chaotic that i can never wrap my head around it changed that.
in my day to day life, i practice paganism. specifically, i do diety work with Dionysus. but i also believe in God. I believe that Jesus was the son of God who came to earth and died for our sins. I believe in every single religion, but i get to choose one that makes me the happiest.
i would be astonished if anybody reads this whole thing, but if you did, here’s the big takeaway. religion is a concept that’s far to big to put in a nice box that we can understand. nobody understands it and nobody ever will, so choose something to believe and put your heart in it. religion is a building block to self love and care. no matter what you believe, you have the right to believe it and you have the correct belief.
thanks for reading! if you have any interesting takes i would love to hear them this one of my favorite topics because there’s infinite talking points and nobody is ever objectively right or wrong.

mumbles something about how we can neither prove nor disprove the existence of spiritual beings, but we, as humans, certainly don't know as much about them as we think we do, and to assume we can fully understand and communicate with them is foolish
