an: heehee happy valentines day! there is still more to come so don't worry i'm not stopping here

pairings: timeskip!atsumu x fem!reader

warnings: little angst, lots of fluff, lots of pet names, confessions of feelings

the steady drum of volleyballs hitting the hardwood floor distracts atsumu's thoughts for a while. soles squeaking, teammates shouting, and the tune of the coach's whistle bouncing off of the walls. he's finally out of his head.

but, as always, the regular discussions in the locker room pull him right back in.

"how long has it been? three months? and you still haven't asked her out?"

atsumu hums, shutting his locker and giving hinata an exhausted look. "yeah, since before christmas."

"what's the hold-up?" bokuto pats atsumu on the back with wiggling eyebrows. "is little 'tsumie afraid?"

that makes him irritated. he knows he should have made things official weeks ago. the badgering isn't helping, though.

"shut up," he huffs and hides a frown with the hoodie that's pulled over his head. "until ya get a girlfriend kotaro, i don't wanna hear shit."

bokuto whistles. "okay, okay. but seriously, what's the issue?"

atsumu thinks for a second. he's honestly not really sure. he's been meaning to, he just can't find the right time.

but, he's pretty sure that's just an excuse.

"you don't have an excuse miya," sakusa smirks as they walk towards the parking lot. "i agree kotaro, i think he's scared."

"no!" atsumu quips, a little quickly. "i mean, i don't know. i really don't know. i want to, i just...can't."

"is it her? does she want to? are you getting mixed signals?" hinata rests against the hood of his car.

"no, she's always happy to talk to me. she gets excited to see me, buys me dinner, and responds immediately. she's perfect."

"soooo," sakusa raises his eyebrows. atsumu sighs.

"i just don't want to disappoint her."

his stomach flips. he's thought about it for months at this point. he wanted to make you his before the first date was over. but, his past got in the way, clouding his confidence just a touch.

past girls using him for the little money he makes. some girls accusing him of spending too much time at volleyball, and not providing enough attention. others just in it for attention, lusting after the instagram posts and twitter updates with their faces in them.

atsumu wants you to be his, and he doesn't want you to leave.

"atsumu, it's been three months. i think she knows you by now. besides, if she was interested in you for the wrong reasons, wouldn't she have left by now?" bokuto's words help atsumu to relax a little.

"yeah, yer right. god, what do i even do? i feel like a fuckin' high schooler," he whines, throwing his bag into his car.

"you're in luck. valentine's day is tomorrow, which means you have the perfect reason," sakusa slides into his car. "c'mon miya, where's your romantic side?"

atsumu thinks about that the entire drive home. he doesn't know what to do. he considers taking you out to a nice dinner, somewhere fancy and luxurious. but, reservations have probably been booked for months. he thinks about using a card, but that's lame. really, he wants to call you for advice, just like he does with everything, but that won't work.

he throws himself on his bed with a sigh.

maybe he'll never ask.

little does he know, you're in the same boat.

sitting cross-legged in the middle of your bedroom floor, you look like an art project gone wrong. glue sticks, markers, and different shades of pink cardstock litter the ground hiding the failed cards and notes from before. you sigh, putting the finishing touches on what you hope to be the final product.

a small, pink card with a bumble bee and hearts with the words bee mine in shaky cursive underneath. you're still deciding what to fill the inside with.

you don't want to say too much, but you also want to make sure you get your feelings out. it's been almost six weeks, and atsumu still hasn't made things official with you. you see him at least three times a week, he takes you to dinner but never calls them dates. he invites you to parties, event dinners, and even took you to his cousin's wedding last weekend.

what's taking him so long?

as soon as you see the clock on the wall, you groan. atsumu should be here any minute, and you haven't written a word on his card yet. he asked you if he could come over tonight, saying he was dying to see ya. since it's the night before valentines, you decide this may be your only shot. you quickly scribble something down, hearing his footsteps through the thin walls of your apartment. quick hands shove the evidence into a garbage bag before you scurry to wash up.

"honey, i'm home!" atsumu sings as he opens the door. "wait! close yer eyes!"

"why should i listen to someone who just entered my home without permission?" you say, eyes firmly closed from your spot on the couch.

"yet, ya listened anyway huh?" he teases when you flip him off from the couch. "keep em' closed pretty. i'm not ready yet."

your heart beats a little quicker. "o-okay, but i have to tell you something."

"alright sweetheart. just a second," he grunts, tripping over the strings of the five heart balloons that he holds in his left hand. he shuffles over to you at sets down a container of chocolate-covered strawberries (that he had to beg osamu to make), and a dozen roses. you smile when you hear the crinkle of cellophane.

atsumu's stomach is doing flips, but he can't do this anymore.

"okay, you can open." his voice sounds a lot more nervous than he would've liked. when you open them, he can't quite read your face.

"atsumu," you breathe. you aren't sure where to look.

"i know, it's a lot, but listen," he flops down next to you, grabbing your hands in his. "i didn't want to be lame but, i just wanted to tell you."

"okay," you ease him on. he takes a deep breath, before smiling wide.

"i think that ya have got to be the most beautiful girl i have ever seen in my life," he looks at you with hearts in his eyes. "from the moment i met ya, i wanted to make ya mine. i want to be the one ya come home to after a long day, i want to see ya in the stands during my games with my jersey on," his cheeks get a little pink.

"i want ya to be mine. my girlfriend."

"atsumu," you breathe, just like before. this time is a little more shaky, but with a bigger smile. "i want to be yours. i want you to be mine."

he laughs running his hand through his hair. "really?"

you nod, holding his face in your hands.

"really," you smile, pulling him in for a kiss. atsumu doesn't pull away until he absolutely has to, wanting to drown in this moment and keep it forever.

"baby, i don't think ya know how happy i am right now," he really can't stop smiling, no matter how hard he tries. he feels like a weight has been lifted off of his chest, amazed at the instant relief he feels after telling you.

"you didn't have to do all of this!" you pull at the balloons, watching them bounce off of one another.

"yes i did! plus, ya gotta try one of these. my brother made 'em and they're amazin'." you reach down to grab one, but he stops you.

"let me grab one!" you giggle, but he smirks.

"what's in your hand?"

you freeze, forgetting all about the card that rests between your fingertips.

"nothing."

"oh c'mon angel, lemme see!"

you shake your head, but he persists.

"why not!"

"because it's stupid, especially compared to all of this!" you gesture towards the flowers and berries.

"please," he begs, giving you a large pout. you roll your eyes.

"fine, but save the comments for yourself. i worked really hard on it."

atsumu pulls the card from it's envelope slowly before giving a quiet gasp.

"i know, i know, it looks like a preschooler did it. just give it back and-"

"are ya kidding me?" he practically shrieks. "this is goin' straight on my locker. 'gonna tape it right to the front."

"are you serious?"

"mhm," he hums, smirking when he reads the inside of the card.

happy valentine's day atsumu. you're the most handsome man i've ever met, and the funniest too. i hope that you will "bee mine" once and for all.

"what's so funny?"

"nothin', i'm just thinkin' that you might have a crush on me."

you roll your eyes, scooching a little closer to him on the couch. he wraps his arms around you and plants a kiss on top of your head.

"for the record, i have a crush on ya too. a huge one."

↳ what would it take for the world’s most private man to show his beloved treasure to his once irrelevant world? Simple — a pure and willing heart that only knows of one at the tender hour of 11:53 pm.

Sakusa Kiyoomi has always been private with his life. Whether it be answering superficial questions about his day to day as an athlete, to the simplest questions of his fans asking what he used for his cologne, Sakusa Kiyoomi kept his answers to a minimum — giving no more than a couple of words, a sentence if lucky.

And despite his larger than average frame, the paparazzi would never be able to get a full picture of him. Always dressed in a darker set of clothes — a black hoodie paired with dark jeans or slacks — a mask that hid half of his face while the other half was completely covered by his baseball hat or hoodie. Sakusa made it his mission to keep his life outside the athletic world to a certain degree of privacy because that was the only sense of control he seemed to be able to grasp in such a loud and intrusive world — an irrelevant world.

He looked rather bored and nonchalant during public events, but from under the table, he would be anxiously fiddling his fingers. And Sakusa never went out of his way to garner attention for himself like some of his extroverted teammates, but never was he purposefully rude like how some antics would label him as — just a bit more nervous than most.

Sakusa never seemed to feel good about himself after answering so bluntly. He wonders, going as far as to search videos about public speaking, or practicing what he’s learned on himself in his closet mirror, if he should be more lax like Atsumu, go more in depth in his answers like Hinata, be more inviting while he spoke like Bokuto... but he simply couldn't.

Grumbling to himself at how long the event was going, constantly looking at his Rolex Daytona to count down the mere minutes — seconds almost — till he was allowed to go home, till he would be able to undress out of his suffocating tie and painful shoes, till he would be able to —

“You’re gonna burn a hole through your watch Omi Omi,” a certain blonde teased, interrupting his train of thought.

“I got 56 minutes left,” the man mumbled under his mask, shaking his leg under the table.

And noticing the uncomfortable burden weighing on his teammates shoulder, Atsumu responded with a small knowing smile, “relax yeah? You’ll be home in no time, we’ll make sure of it.”

To Kiyoomi, it was 56 minutes too long.

But in the rare moments he chose to share, Sakusa posted little updates through his socials, teasing with pictures that curated a mysterious atmosphere about him, opening a tad bit of himself before he would go completely offline for the next couple of months until his PR team would beg for him to post, baiting him to at least do it for his fans.

So would it be crazy to say, Sakusa Kiyoomi was the type of man that would have four pictures on his public Instagram and he’ll be the type to post once every blue moon? Posts with no captions and edits but simply a raw form of message entailing a meaning behind the picture itself. A picture of a beautiful scenic background that he passed through for each morning jog, another of a memorable moment in his volleyball career as he played for Japan’s national team, and the third of some random aesthetic picture that documented his highly appraised elegant style. Sakusa Kiyoomi was truly a mystery that even his most loyal fans couldn’t decipher.

But when he posted his fourth, with no questions asked, with no publicists begging for him to stay relevant, simply done on his own willful accord at 11:53 pm, a picture where he specifically and deliberately posted in such a manner — blurry, even filtered through an edit of a certain mysterious person, that held the honor of having a simple caption, ‘my everything,’ it’s easy to say the internet went into havoc seeing such a move from him. To potentially venture into the private life of the Sakusa Kiyoomi — the one that always strayed far from opening up about his private life, the one that’s made it absolutely clear to not ask about anything personal.

Yet, he still shared, simply because he wanted to.

But little do such people know, that in the pictures he’s posted within the years of having his socials he’s been, well, secretly telling the world an indirect message — you.

You were there for every step of his victories, through thick and thin, awaiting with a pretty smile and a warm embrace to give.

You were the one to selflessly catch him through his downfalls with open arms, always ready to carry him through his failures.

You were the one that taught him about the simple pleasures of life such as going for a midnight icecream run to your local fast food chain, to sleeping in during random days of the week — something he would've never done nor thought of doing before he’s met you.

You felt like the fresh breath of air he’ll inhale on the first mornings of spring.

You were the anchor through his turbulent storms.

And it was you that he wanted to wake up to and be a recipient of your sleepy good mornings, and you to be the one to hear his last goodbyes before the dawning of a new day as he held you close in his arms.

Sakusa Kiyoomi, the one that truly despised letting people into his life, couldn’t resist his desire to finally show you off to the world… because you, you were the exception that defied his all.

So with a nervous hand and a proud heart, he posts a rather hazy photo of you sleeping. A picture of you cuddled in his frame, as he took a snapshot from above while he kissed your foreheads together. A memory for him, but an absolute bomb for many, yet a moment overall of him nonchalantly showing he was in love.

Even Sakusa believes, that surely no other could have such a reign over his fragile heart than you, making him be someone out of his character yet feel valid to be so.

And at that moment he posts, Kiyoomi slowly scoots his body lower to tightly wrap his long arms around your shoulders as he nervously burrows his heated cheeks into the delicate valley of your neck, murmuring his truth, feeling safe as he softly inhaled your natural scent,

“you are surely my everything, my love.”

And he hoped that his message, his vow of love, would be heard in your dreams.

But, Sakusa Kiyoomi wouldn’t be the man the world knew, timid and shy, if he didn’t turn off the comments the moment he saw his fans respond, “WHO IS THAT?” to “I’m so jealous… to be loved by our omi”… but today… today he chose not to.

Because despite as selfish as he was, he wanted you to be his one and only, untainted by the opinions of an irrelevant world; he simply wanted you to stay as his first love, his beloved partner… a deity so merciful to have brought him into another world, a dimension far greater than what he’s known of before you, unintentionally making him want to show glimpses of who he truly was to the world without him even knowing.

And today, Sakusa Kiyoomi chose to be honest.

So when he leaves his comments open, his once irrelevant world becomes fairly relevant — for the private Sakusa willingly shared his most treasured secret.

Therefore, in lieu of such news, his followers collectively shocked at his unforeseen action couldn’t help but actively ponder, “who is this person that managed to change our stoic omi??! omg !! 😳”

But unlike the many times, he’s been asked about the private details of his life, dodging questions left and right to hide the intimate parts about himself, this time Sakusa Kiyoomi welcomes these questions in joy. Responding with, again, as simple as he could be, but now with a welcoming smile laced on his face as he’s cuddled next to a warm you, a response not far from his actual self, yet the most he’s ever shared

‘that’s a secret. 🙂’

and closing his phone, lightly tossing it to the other side of the bed, for once Sakusa felt good about his short answer.

"Looks like someone's really eager to talk to you," the taxi driver comments when your phone won't stop ringing, but you just snort and finally turn off your phone. "Seems like it, yeah." He raises an eyebrow at your resigned tone but tactfully keeps any further comments to himself, a gesture you appreciate at the moment.

Your whole body feels numb.

You're furious with Atsumu, that's certain. Part of you wants to confront him, ask how he could sink so low as to cheat on his girlfriend – heck, how he could marry you without telling her. Another part just feels sad and disappointed, just wanting to go back home and get some sleep, hoping things will seem better with time. Maybe you'll find out that all of this is just a bad joke, just a misunderstanding. Perhaps she's not his girlfriend – maybe she is someone who misunderstood that he's married and just had no idea that it's you. But why did she claim to have him in the palm of her hand?

You fight back tears and take a deep breath through your nose, thankfully almost home at this point. You won't try to reach out to him. Not after tonight. He'll either contact you tomorrow and explain everything, or you'll not see him again.

"He hasn't tried to contact you?" Yachi looks at you with sad puppy eyes while she applies a soft pink polish on her nails. You shake your head and hold your cup of tea a bit tighter. The TV quietly plays a movie in the background, something you two don't really focus on right now, especially not since you're finally talking about Atsumu.

"He called a few times during the night, but after that, nothing. Complete silence. I can't even see his profile picture anymore. I think he blocked me." You swallow the heavy lump in your throat at this words. He blocked you. Like you're some kind of obsessed fan or just a nuisance to him.

It's been a week now since it happened. You expected him to at least call again or maybe even visit your apartment after not seeing you for so long, but nothing. He hasn't bothered even giving you the slightest sign of life. But your heart clenched when you saw that he had updated his Instagram profile today with pictures of him at Onigiri Miya's – and you found the strawberry tiramisu that you both had shared the other day among the pictures, you just can't understand why he would do that.

Yachi closes the small lid and looks at you with anger coating her face while she carefully reaches for her phone. "I'll call Hinata and ask—"

"No!" You shake your head energetically, and Yachi lowers her hand. "Please don't bring him into it. It's embarrassing enough that I thought we had something going on." You bury your face in your hand and sigh, and Yachi quickly wraps her arms around you in a comforting way while making sure her fingers don't smudge her polish.

"I'm so sorry, Y/N. I never thought he was seeing someone. Hinata also had no idea, I guarantee it. He would have told me instantly if he knew. And Kageyama would have told me as well. They will give him an earful once they know."

You smile bitterly but still feel a bit better at the thought of cute sunshine Hinata yelling at Atsumu. "It's okay; it's not your fault. I'll forget about him. Just another year, and then I'll completely cut him out of my life."

You smile weakly, finally returning the hug with the mug still in your hand. It's time to forget about him. You'll see him in about a year, and that will be the last time. You'll make sure of that.

"Before I forget, Hinata asked if you received the cards for the Olympics match. You don't have to go, but if you want to, he'd be glad for you to come. He really likes you."

"I'll think about it. It's in a few weeks, right? I don't know if I want to see Atsumu so soon again. But maybe for some sort of closure?" You pull back and look at her with furrowed brows, and she nods at your words.

"I get it. But I'm still really disappointed in him. I really thought he's a good guy."

"Me too." You smile sadly, thinking about the pretty woman in the elevator, feeling a pang in your heart.

A part of you is still longing for him. He makes you feel good, he makes you feel desirable and beautiful. He makes you feel like you matter to him, like you're having a part of his heart. Yet, he hasn't told you about that woman, and it makes you feel dirty. The fact that he hasn't reached out after that night is enough to make you want to forget him and erase any foolish hope that this is just a misunderstanding. It's bitter reality.

You just need to make it clear to your heart that Atsumu Miya is no longer part of your life.

"Samu, she hates me."

"Yeah, and she has every reason to."

Osamu sighs as he watches Atsumu, a big pathetic clump of sadness practically lying on his counter. Atsumu is in no condition to drive home, and Osamu is well aware of that, already planning to drive to his apartment before he can finally go to his own bed. Since that incident a month ago, Atsumu has become unstable, getting drunk every other night, setting up a dangerous routine. Knowing he has an important match coming up doesn't stop him. Volleyball, always his top priority, now takes a back seat to his misery. Not even Bokuto can cheer him up, and Hinata is suspiciously avoiding him. He suspects Yachi finally told him what happened, though Hinata hasn't mentioned it.

"I even posted a pic of me being here tonight. She didn't come."

"You post pictures of being here almost every night. You can't tell me you expected her to come after parting like that? And you know that there's still the chance that she met her on her way downstairs." Atsumu sighs, slowly lifting his head at Osamu's sharp response. His face is red, eyes red-rimmed – a side effect of the alcohol. He looks horrible, and it actually pains Osamu to see him like this.

"Shut it. I'll call her. I got a new number today. I can call her now; I was just waiting for the right moment."

Osamu hesitates but decides it might be good for Atsumu to finally reach out, after being unable to do so during the past few weeks. Doubtful you'll answer, it's late after all, but maybe when you listen to the whole story and if Atsumu does a lot of groveling and explaining- then maybe you two still have a chance. Osamu still has no idea what kind of fate brought the two of you together, but he is certain that you'd make a great couple. If only his twin had a few more brain cells and a bit more luck.

Atsumu has finally managed to find your contact and started a call, which got directed to your mailbox after a few moments. He clears his throat and straightens his posture before he begins to talk, almost looking like his usual self.

"Y/N? It's me, Atsumu. I know it's been a while, but I'm sorry for everything. I couldn't call or text, but I miss you." He sighs and covers his eyes. "I miss you a lot, actually, I've been thinking about you every day ever since that night. I know it's all kind of messed up, but I can explain everything. Please, just let me. Please, y/n. I don't... don't want to lose you." Atsumu takes a deep breath and ends the call, his hands slightly shaky now.

"That was... corny." Osamu cringes, wiping the counter and putting Atsumu's beer aside.

"That's it – my last try of reaching out to her. If she's not answering, I'll just let her go." Atsumu's words are a bit slurred, but Osamu still gets it. He prays you'll listen – or else he'll be in trouble.

You wake up to a missed call and a message on your voicemail from an unknown number. Probably spam.

Without thinking twice, you delete the message.

yeah!! hehehe

so the players are astumu, bokuto, hinata, and sasuka, it was supposed to be like, a chill way to pass time in the dorms during lockdown but it was NOT!!!!! bc we all know how monopoly goes

sasuka is the iron, atsumu is the boot, bokuto is the racecar (after losing the little dog to hinata, whos got killer puppy dog eyes, especially for his mentor. how was he supposed to say no to his disciple!?!?!?!)

hinata and bokuto were the first two knocked out, hinata first, after the first hour, sasuka already had hotels and hinata does not know any gaming strats unfortunately, bokuto lasted as long as he did bc he was taking pictures of the board and getting help from akaashi who reached out to kuroo for help who reached out to kenma for help. he lost bc kenma had to stream and wasnt able to provide answers anymore

that left sasuka and atsumu. it was a blood bath. after the first day, inunaki started posting updates about the game on the msby twitter ("its *technically* a jackals game, captain!!")

hinata did an Instagram live of one of sasukas and atsumu trade deals. it got heated so the live starts in the middle of atsumu calling sasuka an extortionist and a greedy pig and sasuka shoots back "win or die, miya." and the camera turns to bokuto whos eating popcorn and watching this like its a tv drama and then hinata reveals w his camera work that they were fighting over the last railroad. there is no controlling the fighting.

sasuka wins, fortunately no fights get physical bc astumu lunged for sasuka and he kicked bokuto on accident and felt soooo bad about it bc it split his lip and bokuto laughed it off but tsumu was crying about it and monopoly got banned from the household, adriah took it to the alley and burned it in a trashbin, he posted a picture with the caption "here's to a good night's sleep"

To be honest, like, really really honest, I'm supposed to be studying for one of my classes, yet, here we are my people.

If I'm being honest with you, there's so many fics around the internet that I didn't know where to begin with, but today I read a post on Instagram that in december we could have news about Haikyuu!! 5th season.

So, when I thought about doing this rec-fic, I'm not gonna lie, I didn't know what I was thinking. But I don't regret choosing this fic as the first one.

If there's something I can totally bet is that at least every fanfic reader has re-read a fic the totally love.

This is mine. Or well, one of them.

I won't lie, I'm into the time travel thing, like, in all of my AO3 bookmarks, there's at least 152 fics, only with that specific tag, so yeah, I know what I am doing with this, sorta.

As always, and even more related with the fic, this post and rec has heavy spoilers of the fic, anime and manga.

So if you haven't read the manga and don't like heavy spoilers of what will happen to our favorite tangerine boy, then I'll stop you here and go to read the manga.

Yes, the summary tells you everything and nothing at the same time.

That's what makes this fic so frustrating and so amazing.

(I'm feeling like any moment I would end up saying Kacchan sugoi!!)

Usually, when you are a time-travel-fanfic-genre-reader, you know there's some type-ish of rules regarding the story or how is constructed, and based in these, you read or not the fic. What are this rules? I don't know how to explain it to you because you learn them while you get the experience of reading the fics. It's weird.

But one of them, regarding the narrative, is how the characters socialized with each other, in this case (as the summary says) is a Future!Hinata with 2012/2013!Karasuno VC. The trickery thing is the knowledge (how the author uses this knowledge to introduce us to this new universe/story and how they make us fall in love with their narrative), and since the manga is finished💔 it's kinda easier (but not less challenging) to write it. Write time travel fanfic is hard, so appreciate it when you find a good fic. In the 12 chapters (n° 13 is an Author Note) we get a few general ideas:

Hinata wanting to be his Older-self.

Kageyama wanting that future happen.

Everyone seeing that Karasuno is a cage for Shouyou, ironically.

Karasuno getting suspicious of Older!Hinata.

Karasuno evolving and getting ready to blow everyone away in Nationals.

The context of the fic is that Older!Hinata appears magically in the middle of a practice match, the first years are back from the training camps and the team is preparing for Spring Nationals, Kageyama is frustrated because Hinata won't spike his tosses, and Hinata wants to practice his receives. Basically, Karasuno is a Mess™. That's how it begins.

But when Older!Hinata appears, the more he lets on, the more Younger!Shouyou wants to become that person, who is himself in ten years. At the beginning, they want the Pro Volleyball Player to become their coach and help them to win Nationals but Older!Hinata says no, why? He gives them a very coherent and logical explanation of what we know as the Butterfly Effect™. While reading this chapters, I thought that (if that ever happens to me, which is impossible) I would do the same. Time Travel gives you the chance (and knowledge) of molding the future to a certain extend, but is that why is very dangerous, because you change everything and when you come back, that won't be the future you know, instead, it becomes an alternative reality o AU. And shit hits the fan. I mean, that is, if you're following the 'usual' Time Travel Theory, not Avengers: End Game.

In the end, Older!Hinata becomes their coach but Shouyou must promise to follow the same path he did when he graduated High School (mostly going to Brazil to train in BV, not getting a fever in the middle of a match, but details). Also, very coherent and logical. It's a interesting way of manipulate history, but this is fanfiction and the author holds the power. Still, I have so many theories.

By the way, Older!Hinata is a 26-year-old Hinata Shouyou, who is the N° 21 Opposite Hitter of the ASAS São Paulo, also was the N°21 OP of the MSBY Black Jackals, and is the N°10 OP of the Japanese Men National Volleyball team, with who he went to 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His experience goes on 3 years of High School Indoors Volleyball, 3 years as a Pro in Beach Volleyball and 4 years as a Pro on Indoors Volleyball. 10 years of volleyball experience. As you can understand, the man knows his stuff.

On the past side of the table, we have Kageyama Tobio. He already met Miya Atsumu, so he had so many unresolved issues about what he used to know about his setting and volleyball. He's known as Miyagi's Best Setter. So he meets a Hinata Shouyou, who's very different to the tangerine boy he has by his side at the moment, a taller Hinata that has a 10 years experience and knowledge, a Hinata that can serve, receive, set, spike and block, whose extraordinary reflexes and athletics are refined and developed, and even more importantly, doesn't depend on Kageyama to play. He realized that Hinata became his own player, his own person and his own decoy. Totally crushing, poor Tobio. And yet, that's what motivates him to achieve that future, because that would meant that he found that person.

As for the other three points, there's a particular scene (one that is my favorite) where Older!Hinata, not only speaks about the wasted potential during Karasuno but also about being lost and not knowing what he wanted when he was in High School. In a way, he refers to Hinata playing for what they wanted him and not what he wanted to be. This is another interesting topic that I've seen being talked in other fics, and is something I agree with. I totally believe that if Karasuno had focused on helping Hinata learn and train the basics instead of throwing him to the wolves, he would be a better player. Yeah, Shouyou wanted to spiked the ball, but volleyball is more than that, at some point, you end up playing in all positions, that's why volleyball players are well-rounded. In a way, it's about connecting with every position, with every player. During the fic, Karasuno learn this, they see the mistake while Older!Hinata is fixing it. He shows Karasuno what they were missing but also he shows his younger-self what he can become. And this 16-year-old Hinata Shouyou wants to become that, and by doing it, he must to become his own person.

Yeah, Time Travel Fix-It.

So Karasuno evolves. They're not those kids who barely survive Shiratorizawa. And it's amazing reading it. There's no other way to explain it, because the author shows us not only the 12 karasuno players, but also the managers, Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei, how all of them are affected by Older!Hinata, and as always, how his presence influence them. It's kinda like Hinata being the sun and everyone feeling the rays of the sun and their warm, even his younger-self. The author uses all of them to help us see everything that's happening, not only Kageyama and both Shouyous. At some point, when they finally arrive at Nationals, we see other characters POV's, and is exciting 'cause we read through them how Karasuno is this New Karasuno, that's ready to take names and kick asses. We watch them giving everything to be this New Karasuno. It's exciting.

Older!Hinata do this with no regrets and he gives his all to help them achieve what he couldn't when he was a high schooler, but not everything is awesomes and greatness, 'cause he is so close but so far from home, that you can feel the pain during the whole fic, how much he craves going back to his present. There's no angst but you can feel it. You can see that he's hurting, even more when they arrive at Nationals, because there's so many people he knows, people he's friends with, and yet, they don't know him, they haven't shared the same experienced, and even if they will, it won't be the same because he already change everything (which is related to a theory of mine, but that's for another moment).

Karasuno gets suspicious, and while he lets on a lot of things (and even some characters have their own theories), he also won't say a word about anything, meaning, he says he plays in Brazil but won't say a word on his time with the Jackals, or the National Team, or even his time in Karasuno. It gives you this feeling on 'when will he finally break'. Kageyama has this idea that his future self and Older!Hinata are not friends anymore, and of course he tries to fix that while he can.

I really love how all the experiences Hinata had in the time-skip, the author could translate them perfectly in this personality we see during the fic, this very wise, mature, patient and understanding Hinata. It not only amaze the characters but also the reader while advancing the fic. It makes you wonder how is this future this Hinata lives in.

And that's what takes us to the other side of the table: the Future Side. (or present?)

While a big part of the story happens in the past (ten years in the past, in 2012/2013), there's a bit that happens in the future, in 2022.

We have Kageyama, Atsumu, Kenma, Bokuto, Sakusa and Pedro, trying to figure out what happened to Shouyou. Because he disappeared. It gives you this perspective on how everyone sees Hinata Shouyou, not only the player but the person too.

There's many fics that shows some of this friendships, the manga (at least in the time-skip) doesn't show too much on certain relationships, but usually fics approach this as Hinata being friends with everyone (totally true), being the funny, amazing, talented, cute and silly guy he is, but not many mention the way his experiences changed him and made him be more mature, and while some fics do it, Heal our Wings captures it in the perfect way. Hinata became the reliable guy, the one you know he'd always had your back, he's that one friendship you want to take care of, and even if you haven't talked in ages when you do, it feels like that time never went on. We see these six characters trying to find what happened (and probably will see them getting him back) because each of them is bonded with Shouyou in their special way. Yeah, even Omi-san.

To be honest, there's not many to address about the future without telling you everything, but the fact that they want Hinata back speak lots about them.

I totally recommend this fanfiction, and even if Time Travel is not your thing, you won't regret reading it. I mean, 12 chapters and almost 125.000 words. If that doesn't seduce you, then you and I must to have a serious talk. Just joking. (I'm not).

The way the author uses all the resources to tell this story, how well written it is, and how it makes you want more, makes worth the wait. I mean, I'd read it like 5 times. And it's never enough.

So yeah, 100% recommended✨✨✨✨✨.
