Buck: Alright, here's the deal. It's been a bit hard to convince Eddie that this is a good thing, but you'll help me crumble up his defence. Jee-Yun: *tilts head cutely* Buck, triumphantly: That's right. No way he's going to say no with you by my side, princess. Uncle Eddie's going to buy anything Uncle Buck wants when we use both our eyes at him! Jee-Yun: *claps excitedly*

Eddie knew Buck was going to cry the first time Chris called him any variation of dad.
It'd been weeks since Chris asked Eddie about this and he'd been thinking about what to call Buck because I can't call you both dad, it'll get confusing. He had concluded that he was too big for daddy, father was way too serious for Buck, and they didn't talk enough in Spanish for papi to sound natural for Chris.
Despite that, Eddie wasn't surprised when finally, while Eddie and Bobby were lying the table at Athena's place and Buck was entertaining the kids with Maddie, he heard Chris grumble at Buck's lame joke, "Pops, that's so embarrassing."
He had expected Buck to cry and he did cry and he was holding Jee at that moment so she started crying, too, when she noticed her uncle crying and it looked comical.
Eddie couldn't not smile at the scene, fond.
He had expected Buck to cry but what he hadn't expected was for Bobby to cry.
And yet here he was, still holding a plate in his hands, practically sobbing silently next to Eddie.
"You know, Buck used to call me Pops too."
"He did?" Eddie asked because he didn't know what to do - he wasn't best at comforting people in general but that had just taken him aback on whole another level. "Why did he stop? I'm pretty sure you're more of a dad to him than his own father."
"I told him the station isn't a family," Bobby said. "Then I fired him."
Eddie had heard that Buck's been fired straight out of probation, but he had never heard the details. Definitely nothing about this.
"He got the job back on the same day but he has never called me Pops again since."
"Maybe you should tell him to call you that again, then," Eddie said, pointedly. "You know he's not the sharpest tool in the shed about this stuff."

Okay I'm thinking some more thoughts about Christopher and the use of the red umbrella on Buck's balcony, because I think it''s more connected to parenthood rather than danger, as I first thought.
As many have noted, in S6 we first saw the umbrella in the background in 6x04 (Animal Instincts) when Connor comes over to apologize for blindsiding Buck with the request to be his and Kameron's sperm donor.
Tumblr media
It's very conspicuous in the background of this shot, almost like a divider between Buck and Connor. The scene continues with Connor talking about feeling like a total failure for letting down the woman he loves, and how he'd assumed the fault was with her. Interestingly, the umbrella is never in sight during the last scene of the episode where Buck tells Connor and Kameron that he will be their sperm donor. At least to me that makes it seem like it points more to the concept of family and fatherhood that Buck and Connor are discussing; the tone of the conversation is very much about longing for a family and feeling desperate that your own faults is what's holding you back from having one.
The next time we see the umbrella is actually in 6x08 (What's Your Fantasy?) when Buck is watching Jee-Yun.
Tumblr media
It's only kind of visible in the background during the first part of the babysitting montage, but it's still noticeable, because you don't see it at all while Maddie and Chimney are in the apartment, even though similar shots are used where it very well could've been seen. But it makes sense that it wouldn't be as prominent with Jee-Yun - while Buck loves her, he's very clear on his role as her uncle. So it's more about Buck flexing his parenting muscles rather than actually acting in the role of a parent.
The next time the red umbrella makes an appearance is in 6x09 (Red Flag) when Buck reveals that Kameron is pregnant.
Tumblr media
For the duration of the group call you can see the umbrella flapping in the wind behind Buck. Chimney wonders if they should congratulate him, Eddie says that would feel weird, and Buck (a bit later) says he's happy for them and that he'd been worrying about setting them up for more disappointment in case it didn't work. Very much the same train of thought as Connor in 6x05!
In 6x11 (In Another Life) the umbrella flashes by again, both in the coma dream and in the real world. Here it's very much in the background, though, and I think it's just as part of the set rather than having any symbolic role; it's never in focus or prominently visible in the background like in these other cases.
Tumblr media
Now, in 6x12 (Recovery) it's harder to argue that they're not playing with some kind of symbolism with the umbrella!
Tumblr media
We spend quite a bit of the first half of the episode in Buck's apartment, but the only time the umbrella is visible is when Connor comes over - not with Maddie there, not with Hen there. And once again the conversation between Connor and Buck touches on parenthood. Connor seems to hint at being a little bit spooked about becoming a father (understandable): "You hope for something for so long and when it finally happens it doesn't quite feel real."
And finally, today (yesterday for you living in UTC-negative time zones) it was there again in 6x13 (Mixed Feelings).
Tumblr media
In this precious I-have-read-about-this-in-1000-fanfics scene Buck and Chris are baking cookies for Chris' class. The umbrella is visible during the whole scene, hanging out behind Christopher's head. It's very hard to not see this as a parenting scene: Buck and Chris are hanging out without Eddie, at Buck's house, and doing something for school. Buck even kindly rebuffs Chris' question about having cookies for dinner.
Does this mean anything? Who knows! But it's fascinating to be able to find similar themes connecting the scenes where the red umbrella is featured! If I were to guess, I'd say parenthood is the connective thread between all these different scenes, and specifically parenthood in connection to Buck. We've already seen him trying to figure out his own life more during this season, and the sperm donor storyline definitely seems to nudge him towards thinking about his own role as dad and guardian. The very domestic scenes with Eddie and Christopher have only served to underline this, in my opinion!
I am still very suspicious about this shot of Chris at the end of 6x07 (Cursed) though. Very suspicious.

stay close to the people who feel like sunshine
The attitude of "doesn't Jee deserve grandparents" in 6x10 kind of rubbed me the wrong way, so... here, Grandpa Bobby!!!! Set during the winter hiatus.
"So, even though the recipe only calls for two sticks of butter, you use three?"
Bobby grins at Buck and nods as the younger firefighter unwraps the butter and drops it into the pot. "Baking, you have to be exact. But cooking, all you need to worry about is the flavors."
"And also heart disease," Chimney jabs, leaning over the island and picking at the charcuterie board May and Bobby had arranged earlier. Bobby had provided the materials, but May definitely has more of a knack for the artistry. He's just glad she wants to take part in something as routine as helping him in the kitchen-- and the same goes for Buck.
"Doubtful that I'll make it that far," Buck says with a laugh, but Bobby watches him silently for a moment, remembering too well how that attitude feels. Not wanting to drag the mood down, he laughs as well.
"I have to agree with Buck, heart disease is one of the better options in our line of work."
"Stop being macabre," May calls, entering the room. "Look-- cute baby! No more dark humor." She holds up Jee-Yun, who giggles and waves.
Chimney stands up with a bright smile for his daughter, but Jee seems happy in May's arms for the moment. She makes the motion of blowing a kiss, and Bobby can't help but move across the kitchen to watch the scene closer.
"Hi Daddy, love you!" Jee says to Chimney, blowing him a kiss. Maddie is taking pictures of May with the baby, and Jee-Yun waves to her next. "Hi Mama, love you!" And then May steps into the kitchen, and Bobby expects Jee to call out for her Uncle Buck, but two tiny hands reach for him instead. "Grandpa Bobby! Love you!"
Bobby freezes, staring in shock at the toddler. Jee is still reaching for him, and May's face is the picture of delighted shock, and other than that he kind of has tunnel vision. In spite of his surprise, he takes the baby reflexively, holding her to his chest. She smells like baby powder and a warmth he hasn't felt in a long time, and he rocks her gently as she giggles and tugs at the neck of his apron.
Chimney is standing behind May now, looking a little more concerned. "Bobby? Is that okay? I don't know... I don't know where that came from."
Bobby starts to smile-- who wouldn't, holding Jee-Yun-- and pushes away the thoughts in his head that had, for a long time, abandoned hope of being a grandfather. "Don't worry, Chim. This is totally great."
"Only problem is, we're too young to be grandparents," Athena jokes, raising her glass of wine from where she sits in her armchair.
"Well, I think you guys are perfect grandparents," Maddie pronounces, moving into the kitchen and kissing Bobby on the cheek as she strokes Jee-Yun's hair. "Jee certainly needs those." She purses her lips, staring at the wall, and Bobby removes a hand from the baby to squeeze her shoulder.
"This is kind of crazy, though," Chim points out. "I had to coach her every day when we were getting her to say Uncle Buck-- where would she have picked this up?"
Suddenly suspicious, Bobby glances over his shoulder at Buck, who's still stirring the simmering pot. The younger Buckley shrugs innocently.
"I dunno, guys... why are you looking at me?"
And then he winks, and Bobby decides that maybe the kid has enough between his ears to handle cooking by himself.
He'll just go sit down for a little bit with his granddaughter.

thinking of uncle buck got me thinking thoughts and then i remembered this tiktok. so here we are .(let's say jee is a little bit older here too)
When Eddie comes back from work, he finds his house is a mess. There's toys everywhere, his living room looks more like a warzone than anything.
And in the middle of all that chaos, of course, there's the Buckleys. Buck and Jee.
Buck has tiny buns at the top of his head— or what Eddie thinks are supposed to be buns but aren't because Buck's hair was too short for that. He has blush on his cheeks, making them look a bright out of place pink. Not to mention Jee picking his eye with the make up brush and what Eddie asummes is eyeshadow.
"Jee! Be gentle, bub, or you'll leave your uncle Buck blind." Buck's laughing and closing his eyes to avoid more harm. The eyeshadow is an ugly bright green and Eddie winces but can't help the way his heart melts at the sight of Buck being so good with his niece.
"Oh. You're home." Buck turns around, lighting up and giving Eddie one of his brightest smiles. The smile that is only reserved for him, it's fond and full of adoration and Eddie wants to be the recipient of that smile for the rest of his days. "Look, Jee! Uncle Eddie's here!" Buck shakes Jee gently, making her laugh but otherwise the girl doesn't pay him much attention, too focused on painting Buck's face.
Jee's movements are uncoordinated and clumsy, Buck wincing every now and then, but he doesn't show any discomfort otherwise.
Eddie leans against the wall and just watches as Buck taps his lips so Jee would apply lip gloss. It's an endearing scene and it makes him yearn for more.
"Maybe someday Buck could do this with our daughter." He thinks, a fond, tender smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he watches his boyfriend lets the six year old give him one of the most ridiculous make up looks that Eddie's ever seen.
Buck would be an amazing dad— well, he already is to Christopher. But, yeah, Eddie wouldn't mind someone else forming part of their little family.

Is "fanfiction friday" a thing in the 911 fandom? Cause if so, here's a little sneak peek.
I'm still working on it, got 2 or 3 more scenes and some editing to do. So I'll probably post the whole chapter some time next week.
Kitchen conversations, coming out and other crises [working title]
It happens one morning when Eddie, Chim and Buck all arrive early for their shift. Chimney brought Jee that morning which nobody is ever really bothered by especially since their shift won't officially start for another 30 minutes. Mrs Lee is going to pick her up soon and the station is closer to the Lees' home than his and Maddie's house.
Buck is making breakfast until he tasks Chimney with setting the table and he takes Jee into his arms. Jee seems absolutely delighted about this and starts babbling away at her uncle and Eddie's not gonna lie. Seeing Buck like this, happy as can be with an equally happy toddler in his arms... He gets a similar feeling watching him with Chris sometimes, but there's just something not quite tangible about Buck holding a baby that has Eddie feeling like his insides are melting.
The smell of a burnt pancake rips him out of his revery and he curses under his breath. Eddie takes care of the mess and sneaks a quick look at Buck, but he's blissfully unaware of Eddie's trip to daydream land. With horror Eddie realises the same cannot be said for Chimney. He kinda hoped to just find him laughing or making a joke about his poor kitchen skills, but instead Chimney is frowning, head tilted to the side, eyes flitting back and forth between Eddie and Buck.
"Oh, you got it bad", Chimney says low enough for Buck not to hear. And really, Eddie would love to protest or tell Chimney to mind his own business, but he's smart enough to know he's been caught. So he just sighs and returns to the pancakes. "Holy shit. Oh my god, holy shit!", Chim continues to whisper excitedly: "You're not even gonna deny it? Eddie conceal-don't-feel Diaz? How long has this been going on?"
"I don't- I'm not actually sure? It's all tangled up in each other and out of order. I never had a best friend like this before, I didn't know it was - this. I just know that during my first week on the job we pulled a live round out of a guys leg and I've trusted him ever since. And somewhere between post-shift conversations and near-death experiences and friday movie nights it just happened."

Ok ok ok.
I know I'm late but..
I have to go meta again cause that one scene made me shout at the TV.
So let's dive in:
-
We have Carla and Eddie and Chris.
We have Chris trying on the suit. The last time we saw him doing it was in the store where Eddie panicked when Ana was referred to as Chris' mum. The moment that clearly set off Eddie's journey to finally make a decision for himself and break things off with Ana.
Tumblr media
This is already a big reference, especially cause Eddie mentions "the last time" Chris was wearing the suit.
You're directly reminded of that scene.
Then Carla and Eddie leave Chris and go to the kitchen (where Ana and Eddie broke up) and talk further. The conversation is about Chris, sure, but also about Eddie.
And we have Carla yet again saying something big, something that's clearly meaningful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think I have to elaborate on what that dream could be for Eddie...
-
And then this is the next scene:
Tumblr media
Chim and Buck carrying in Jee's new bed.
Again, a scene cuts from Eddie to Buck after something meaningful.
And in which way!
Buck in the context of being an uncle, Buck in the context of a kid - after he's donated his sperm.
This CAN'T be a coincidence. Not again and again and again.
What Carla says also applies to Chim and Jee's room situation and might apply to Buck as well.
We see that the room situation doesn't really work out. The fantasy was better than the reality...at least partially. But Chim brings back the words "dream(house)" and "fantasy" and lifts the situation through that into something nice.
Tumblr media
So in this case, fantasy and reality kind of mix and it all turns into something positive in that moment.
Now, what does that mean for Buck?
This HAS to relate to Buck's sperm donation. We haven't seen Buck interact with Jee in ages and now he's taking care of her and helping to create a space for her.
Maybe the fantasy Buck had of helping others with their dream will turn out to have been better than the reality in the end.
And what about the "talking about your dreams make it seem too real."?
Eddie's expression is so prominent here
Tumblr media
and absolutely reminds of his reaction the last time Carla said something impactful to him "make sure to follow your heart".
Tumblr media
Ultimately, back then Eddie's fantasy turned out to be better than the reality as well.
-
There are just too many references in this little scene, in these two sentences, for them not to mean something. We were right last time when we all knew Carla's words were big.
It's set up the same way again. Her words clearly affect Eddie on a deeper level.
Now, of course I'm gonna make this more about Buddie.
We don't only have the scenes cutting from this to Buck, but also that sentence.
Tumblr media
Of course the first thing that came to my mind was: That's why Eddie hasn't said anything about his feelings towards Buck because it's too real.
But also... We haven't had a talk between Buck and Eddie since the very significant one in the first ep where they were talking about Buck's love life. And we haven't had a talk about the whole sperm donor thing.
Maybe both of them are too nervous to actually talk about it cause that would make it real.
Idk idk but you can't tell me that this isn't all on purpose. There are just too many references and the absolute lack of Buddie scenes is so suspicious.
-
The film makers are all too aware of how big of a thing Buddie is within the fandom. They know what will make us scream and what will make us read Buddie into it. They're pros. They're not some amateurs.
There are too many things going on that are very suspicious.
You just can't convince me that it's not at the very least, precisely placed.
And as a bonus we have Eddie saying that as a parent you have all these visions for your kid, just like his parents had for him.
Tumblr media
But Eddie is fine with letting go of them and imo he's also fine to let go of what remains of the expectations his parents have had for him.
-
This is my Buddie meta rant for this episode. I swear, these two sentences and Eddie's expression and Buck's storyline... It's all connected.

SaL anon here bestie, wishing us both luck that this episode will give us something to be feral over. For myself I'm stuck between anticipating some quality Uncle Buck time and being annoyed that Carla of all people is helping Eddie get Chris ready for his first dance. How amazing would it have been for Eddie to call babysitter Buck for help and Buck brings Jee-Yun over to get Chris ready?? I can't imagine KR coming up with a better scenario but maybe I'll be surprised. Best of luck friend 🍷🍷
Hi my friend! I'm fighting through my stuffy head cold to watch this episode so I'm really hoping we get something good to flail over, especially since there is no episode next week, and only one episode after this before season break. We DESERVE a good episode!
I'm hoping we get something good out of the Uncle Buck scene, we have been denied for TOO LONG, and I'm mostly ambivalent about Carla coming back when we haven't seen her since....IDK, Christmas? With (of course) zero mention as to why she hasn't been seen, it feels like a) they can't have Buck involved in this (yet) and they typically use her as a Buck "stand-in", and/or b) we are getting a follow up from a previous Andrew episode on the "follow your heart, not Christopher's" scene. But if it's really just having her here so they don't have to have Buck here for something we KNOW he would be involved in, then I'm gonna be throwing some shade, NGL.
I AM very much looking forward to some good Eddie, Eddie/Chris content which, like last season, is really helping ground the episodes and give them some heart so fingers crossed we get fed some good stuff this week! Also, the lack of Madney content has been disappointing so I'm looking forward to that, but there's already SO much going on, I'm really hoping we don't spend a billion years on emergencies (I am seriously CRINGING at the 911 calls now, they are making them so flippant and "quippy" that it ruins the urgency and distress of the callers), and more time on the main characters and their interactions with each other.
I haven't seen either of the sneak peeks so I'm going in with fresh eyes! See you on the other side bestie! Cheers! *clink*

I just. I just thought about Eddie holding baby Jee-Yun? And singing to her while she clutches at his finger with her tiny meaty baby hand??
Maybe Buck freaked out a little because she was being fussy and wouldn't settle, and its probably nothing but hey, who better to call than Eddie, who conveniently has the day off and cuts off Buck's panicked rambling with a soothing;
"Its okay, Buck. Give me ten minutes, okay? You're doing great. She's probably just restless."
Eddie gets there and sends Buck off to cook dinner or shower or take a nap, scooping Jee-Yun out of her travel crib and making sure she's changed, warm, fed and content. And its been so long since Christopher was this tiny, but holding Jee-Yun makes him think back to that tiny, wriggly little bundle in his arms for the first time, back before it all went to shit.
Eddie pacing slowly around the lower loft, singing quietly, tickling her little chin, grinning when she giggles and gurgles at him. And he can see so much of Maddie and Chimney in her already. She's got Maddie's eyes and Chimney's lopsided grin.
(And for a little crack, maybe Buck catches this scene and is so overwhelmed he just blurts out; "put a baby in me!" And Eddie is like; "... What?" 👁👄👁 Which cues a hilariously awkward but heartfelt confession of feelings on both sides.)
Hey hey! So I like I told you I started this a while ago and then got SEVERE AND DEBILITATING writers block, and it sat waiting for new life. And then 5x03 happened, so Hello, new life! I hope you love it!
With You, My Life, I Will Get Married
Warning: mild spoilers for 9-1-1 season 5 episode 3.
Chimney was out searching for Maddie.
After shifts, on weekends, whenever he had a second, he was either spending time with Jee or out searching for her mom.
In times when he was on the search everyone at the 118 was making time to watch Jee Yun. Mrs. Lee was doing what she could, but couldn't always be available, and when that happened, Jee would spend some time at Bobby and Athena's or by Hen and Karen. And when they had too much going on, or when either of the uncles felt like they weren't getting enough time with their beautiful niece, she would spend time at her Uncle Buck's or Uncle Albert's.
Uncle Buck got lucky this time.
Eight hours in and everything had gone wrong. Buck shoulders were damp with spit-up, baby drool, and snot and all Jee seemed capable of doing was crying, crying, crying.
"I'm so sorry! I don't know what I did wrong, and, and now--just, Jee, please, it's okay, I'm here--!"
She continued to yell and Buck got more and more panicked. "Your Uncle Albert's gonna be here in like 5 minutes, Jee, okay? And then, maybe, maybe he's better with you? And will make you happy, and then--Oh God, what have I done wrong--"
A knocking at the door sent him back on his feet, swaying toward the loft entrance. It opened before he could get there, however, and he stopped where he was, a furious Jee Yun screaming in his ears as Eddie Diaz, not Albert Han, walked in.
"You look like you're having fun." Eddie's eyebrow was raised and his mouth quirked in a teasing smile.
"Eddie...?" Buck's momentary shock was interrupted as Jee let out another wail. "Um, sorry, this isn't the best time at the moment, but Albert--"
"--has a date tonight and sent me as his relief." Eddie reached out and plucked Jee Yun from Buck's arms. "And you have a date with your shower and a few hours' sleep."
"I--no, it's okay, I know you just got off shift--"
"Buck." Eddie shifted Jee to one arm, and the other rested on Buck's chest, over his pattering heartbeat. He met Buck's eyes, his own calm despite the bundle of adorable chaos still screaming bloody murder into his shoulder. "Go shower."
"...Yeah, okay."
***
She truly was one of the cutest babies, even when she was liable to wake up the neighborhood with her noise, Eddie thought with a smile as he re-seated her over one shoulder and began to firmly but gently tap her back.
"Your Tio Eddie is going to assume this is a gas issue, okay, chiquita? Christopher used to have this all the time, and he would scream and cry." Eddie huffed ruefully. "I was useless at it then, but Shannon showed me what to do." He kept tapping at her back. "Good set of lungs means a healthy baby, good job, Jee. Now, let's see if we can't get this gas out of you so you can calm down and you and your Tio Buck can get some sleep, okay?"
Eddie started circling the room, the sun beginning to set as he heard he shower turn on.
"There you go, see? Your Buck is going to get all showered since you drooled all over him, and then you both can get some sleep, how's that sound?"
He was answered with a burp far louder than Jee's small body should be capable of making. Then a sweet gurgling sound as she nestled her chin into his shoulder.
"There, feel better, mi princesa?" Eddie whispered against her soft, downy hair. "When I was small and got upset, and my parents got annoyed with my sulking, they'd send me to Abuela. And she would sit me down on her lap, just like this," he sat down on Buck's couch, and settled Jee Yun against his broad chest, rubbing her small back with a large warm hand. "And she would hug me until I forgot what I was so upset about. All I could think about was the smell of her perfume and how much I wanted to be like her one day.
"Then Pepa would come out and yell at both of us that it's about damn time we came into the house, dinner doesn't make itself." Eddie laughed at the memory. Jee made a small discontented noise and Eddie stood up again, walking toward the kitchen, where he saw the half-formed works of bottle making on the counter. "Shhh, princesa, Tio Eddie's gonna make you a bottle." With Jee over his shoulder, sounding more and more on the edge of hunger-panic, Eddie quickly assembled a bottle then leaned back against the kitchen island and cradled Jee Yun in his arms, pressing the nipple to her mouth, which she accepted gratefully.
"Better, yeah? Where was I...? Oh." Eddie smiled. "Once we were inside, Pepa, Abuela and I would make arroz con leche. Abuella would wash the rice, Pepa would be tutting the whole time about too much sugar, but she would always wink at me and add just a bit more before the cinnamon." Eddie couldn't help the smile that stole over his face as he remembered Abuela's warm kitchen in her El Paso ranch house before she and Pepa relocated to LA. In winter, the windows would fog over from the heat of whatever was on the stove. When she left, a lot of Eddie's heart left with her.
"They used to sing me the song too, you know?" Jee gurgled around her dinner and Eddie smiled again. "Well, I wasn't planning to sing it, but you drive a hard bargain." Eddie's poked Jee's soft cheek with a finger and began to sing.
Arroz con leche se quiere casar con una viudita de la capital, que sepa tejer, que sepa bordar, que ponga la aguja en su campanal.
(English translation: Rice with milk (rice pudding) Wishes to get married With a little widow from the capital. Who knows how to weave (or knit), Who knows how to embroider, Who puts the church steeple in the bell tower.)
***
Eddie was no American Idol contestant, but his voice was soothing and good. Strong. Listening to him sing from his seat on the stairs, Buck almost felt like he was where Jee currently snuggled, right against Eddie's chest, as his bass voice sung the gentle Spanish lyrics, harmonized by the occasional happy noise from Jee Yun.
Yo soy la viudita la hija del rey. Me quiero casar y no sé con quien. Contigo sí, contigo no, Contigo mi vida me casaré yo.
(English translation: I am the widow The daughter of the king, I want to get married and I don’t know with whom. With you, yes. With you, no. With you, my life, I will get married.)
Buck's head knocked lightly against the banister, body relaxing. He wasn't wearing a shirt, just the softest sweatpants he owned with a towel draped over his shoulders to catch water from the mess of wet curls on his head.
Eddie's so hard on himself all the time. I don't get it. He's such a good dad.
Dazedly, Buck's eyes fixed on Eddie's mouth as he repeated the verses again. Then Eddie sighed.
"Afterward Pepa would ask me who I want to marry and Abuela would laugh at me, and I'd always complain--" Jee gurgled again. "Like that, yes. But honestly, it was nice... Even though between you and me, Pepa can't sing very well at all." Eddie's lips quirked again in a smile. "Kind of like your Uncle Buck."
Buck startled at his name and looked up at Eddie's eyes. They twinkled back at him in the dying last light of the day, Eddie's golden skin lit by the last rays of the sun. Buck felt his face heat with a blush, knew there was nothing to do about it.
"Sorry, I should've--"
"Feel better after your shower?"
Buck sighed and smiled. "Yeah. World's better." He stood, stretching out his long legs as he descended the stairs. It was full dark now, but Buck didn't feel like turning on a light. "I can take her now."
"Nope." Eddie met him midway, hand on Buck's shoulder turning him around. "You're both getting some sleep now." One hand on Buck's shoulder, the other holding a drowsy Jee Yun, Eddie guided him back up the stairs, and pressed Buck down until he was sitting on his bed.
"Eddie, are you sure--"
"Shhh." Eddie deposited Jee into Buck's arms, then sat down behind him. "You can hold her for now." Eddie's hands skimmed up Buck's warm back then pulled the towel off Buck's shoulders, laying it on top of Buck's head, where a corner flopped over his eyes.
"Eddie?"
"Hold still, Buck."
Eddie's strong hands curled into the towel and Buck's hair, rubbing vigorously to get it dry. "Seriously, anyone who has ever seen your hair at work would marvel at how different it looks before you comb and gel all the life out of it." He rubbed vigorously, and Buck felt himself relaxing back against Eddie's chest. Tomorrow, he might look back at this and feel embarrassed. He might have to apologize. Tomorrow, he would go back to hiding how much he felt for the man who was drying his hair, still absent-mindedly humming the Arroz con leche tune under his breath. But for now, Eddie was too near and too warm and too... Eddie. And Buck found that he couldn't deny himself Eddie right now.
Buck cleared his throat and made himself focus on their conversation. "I used to wear my hair naturally, but people said it looked floppy. Made me look like a puppy."
"People are stupid sometimes, Buck. You know this." Eddie's thumb traced the shell of Buck's ear. "And if you think slicking back your hair makes you look less like a puppy, you really shouldn't be bothering." He snickered as Buck tried to shoulder his chest and Jee made a noise of complaint.
"So I just look like a puppy all the time, huh?"
The towel dropped. Eddie's arms came around, holding onto Buck and Jee Yun both. "I think you're a beautiful man, Buck."
The air in Buck's chest hiccupped out of his mouth. His heart picked up speed as the places where Eddie's hands rested on his stomach seemed to heat from within. "Y... Eddie?"
"Shhh. Sleep now. Jee's asleep, but who knows for how long." Eddie's voice was gruff, embarrassed. "I'll just--"
"Stay?" It came out too high, too soft. Buck cleared his throat and tried again. "I mean, if it isn't any trouble, and--"
"I can stay." Eddie's arms tightened around Buck again and he pulled him backwards until Buck could lay out flat on his back, before pressing Buck's head down on his pillow. Then Eddie pulled Jee from Buck's arms and sat back against the headrest, legs folded together, Buck's niece cuddled again against his chest. "Sleep now."
"Okay." There was so much Buck wanted to know. To say. It all got stopped in his throat as fear tamped it all down to squirm in his chest.
"Eddie?" The word found its way out.
"Hm?"
"...Nothing."
A sigh. Then, "Come here."
Buck didn't hesitate, moving his head off the pillow and onto Eddie's lap. Eddie's spare hand found its way back into his curls and tugged lightly before stroking through them, gently, so gently.
"Sleep now."
"Okay. But," Buck's jaw cracked around a large yawn. "Before... you have to know..."
"Hm?"
"You are... so beautiful... Eddie Diaz."
Buck felt Eddie's hand tighten in his hair again, before releasing, fingers wandering down to trace his eyebrows, his nose, his lips.
"Sleep, querido."
As Buck's eyes slipped closed, and awareness almost dropped away, he swore he could feel lips press lightly right above his eye, on his birth mark.
"Contigo mi vida me casaré yo."

So excited for 5b. I think it's gonna be as awesome as Season 2. It's about time for Eddie to go to therapy. That man needs help. Maddie's dealing with her PPD and I can't wait to find out why she went to Boston to get help. Did she and Doug lived there at some point? Chimney with Jee Yun following Maddie and their reunion. Athena and her action-packed encounters. Hen and Karen like what's the latest? I'm just really sad that we don't have something huge for Bobby to look forward to in 5b. It's unfair. I need some big Bobby storyline.
But out of all these characters, it's Buck's arc who I'm more excited about. Since Maddie left, Buck felt like his family is slowly drifting apart from him. His abandonment issues lies at the forefront and it needs to be talked about with his therapist, Dr. Copeland. Maddie, Chimney with Jee and Eddie leaving almost at the same time surely left a huge deal of pain to Buck's. So there must be an outlet for all of this hence the introduction of Lucy Donato his temporary new work partner and some scenes with Christopher touted to be as FUN BUCK not sure what Fun Buck truly means though.
With all these happening in 5b for Buck I can't wait for the following :
Buck and Chimney's reunion scene. I'm pretty sure Buck's gonna apologize to Chim for keeping any information about his daughter and Maddie from him but will Chimney apologize to him too?
Buck and Maddie's reunion. It's been a long time since we've seen The Buckley siblings physically together. Will Buck let Maddie know about the punching scene or Maddie finds it out herself? And what does it meant for Maddie that Chim punched her little brother? So much to look forward there.
Buck and Eddie conflict. Eddie is Buck's closest friend. No one sees and knows each other the way each other does. So what does it mean for Buck that Eddie has left the 118?
Buck scenes with Jee Yun and with Christopher. It's been highly anticipated. We all know how Buck loves kids. It was evident all throughout the series. How's he gonna be different being an Uncle to his niece Jee and another adult figure to Christopher?
Buck and Taylor's relationship. There's a lot to say about BuckTaylor. It's tricky. But I'm just gonna leave it here. Are they going to break up? For what reason exactly? Who's gonna initiate the break up? If they're not breaking up, will Buck gonna propose? There's so much to look forward to their journey here and I understand why both actors are so secretive about posting anything about each other's character. The wrench was like a dead giveaway for a hint of break up but knowing 911, I don't think they're breaking up too soon. What I think about Buck's impulsive relationship decision is he's going to propose to Taylor or ask her to move in with him officially.
With all these in store for Buck in 5b, what are they up to for him in the finale? Because my theory is Buck needs a break from all of these. It'll all make sense if he needs to take sometime off away from the past, the hurt, the pain. To recharge, to clean his head. To be better.
So I'm thinking for a finale scene, Buck in the airport parallel to Buck and Abby airport scene in 1x10. The difference is, he's coming back and better.
Don't ask me who's sending him to the airport just in case. Because I can only think any of these 4 people. Maddie, Taylor, Eddie and Christopher.

So someone pointed this out. I couldn't stop laughing about the parallels. Maddie and Eddie both holding a baseball bat. So what does these screengrabs say? Buck had never known his older brother Daniel. He could be Eddie's age. I don't know how to explain it but these photos are telling me that of course, Maddie's Buck's sister but also Eddie here feels like a stand in to Daniel Buckley judging by the constant parallel of Maddie and Eddie since season 2. It's the way how Buck tried to help Maddie his sister, and now for sure Buck will gonna help Eddie too the way how he helped Maddie back in Season 2. Eddie never had a brother. And I feel like they're making these parallels to emphasize that Buck and Eddie are brothers at heart. Always there to help each other. Just like how Maddie and Buck are always there for each other. I was trying to ignore Maddie and Eddie's parallels and how it affects Buck but this time it's becoming too obvious. I'm not closing my doors but for now, I feel like the intention of the writers are becoming clear. Also how we were deprived of Uncle Buck scenes with Jee and Christopher scenes just fuels my theory more. Buck and Eddie are the brothers they never had.
As a huge Buck fan, I'm so fine with it. God, I'm so fine with them being brothers at heart. It's so beautiful. It'll only emphasize the Uncle Buck status with Christopher and now with Jee Yun.

Madney bringing baby Jee to the firehouse for the first time and her fav is Bobby which annoys her uncles (he’s just so chill, and has a soothing voice, babies defs love him)
So this is definitely a little different than what you were probably wanting, but The Words Just Happened Like That
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Chimney could barely contain his excitement. He had thought at first that eventually Jee-Yun would stop being the most exciting thing ever – after all when your new baby is almost a year old, she’s not really “new” anymore. But every single day brought more excitement and more joy than he ever could have imagined.
And today was especially exciting.
Maddie had finally returned from her in-patient treatment for her PPD last week, happy and glowing and wanting to share Jee with the entire world. And that world definitely included finally introducing her to the 118.
“Chim, you know you’re practically vibrating over there, right?” Hen said, looking up from her book with an arch expression.
Chimney laughed. “Why shouldn’t I be? You all finally get to see what I mean when I keep telling you those pictures don’t do her justice!”
“Hey, I’ve backed you up on that” Buck said, grinning at him upside down from over the arm of one of the couches. “She’s the best!”
Chimney grinned again, barely able to stop himself from doing an excited little hop. “Yeah,” he agreed. “She is!”

Bobby watched his team chat happily as he chopped vegetables, something deep in his heart seeming to twist inside of him. He remembered all-too-well his own joy and excitement all those years ago when he had shown his own firstborn off for the first time. He swallowed, pushing down the bittersweet memory and focusing on his cooking.
He hadn’t realized how hard this would be for him, but right now he wanted to be anywhere but here – at the very least so that he wouldn’t ruin Chimney’s excitement.
“We’re here!” Maddie called from downstairs, and in spite of his aching heart, he couldn’t help but laugh as Chimney practically flew past him, Buck and Albert hot at his heels.
“You going with them?” he asked, turning to Hen and Eddie.
“They’re just coming right back up,” Hen said, grinning. “I’m just avoiding the argument over who gets to carry her up here!”
“Exactly!” Eddie agreed.
Bobby smiled softly, turning away again, trying to ignore the ache in his heart. This was good, in spite of the memories he didn’t want to think about right now.
“Drumroll please!” Buck yelled from the stairs.
Bobby grinned, a real one this time, and began banging against the counter with a wooden spoon.
“Introducing,” Buck exclaimed, as he and Albert led the way up the steps. “The one, the only, the incomprehensibly adorable…” he and Albert stepped to the side with a flourish, revealing Chimney holding Jee-Yun in his arms, Maddie just beside him.
“Jee-Yun Buckley Han!” Albert finished, his grin rivaling Buck’s.
“Hooray!” Eddie shouted, as he and Hen clapped vigorously.
Bobby swallowed down the lump in his throat as he got caught up in the excitement of the moment. Maddie was looking at Jee as if she was the most beautiful thing in the world, and Chimney was positively glowing. Jee, for her part, was completely unimpressed with the excitement, content to chew on Chimney’s finger and ignore Hen and Eddie as they ran up, begging to hold her.
“No, no, no,” Chimney said, gently extricating his finger from Jee-Yun’s mouth. “Captain’s privilege, he gets to hold her before you yahoos!”
“Oh, no Chim,” Bobby said, his arms suddenly aching to hold the little girl. “Let them have a turn first.”
“Sorry, Bobby,” Maddie said, taking Jee away from Chim and heading over to him, her smile radiant. “Chim and I discussed the order at home, and you don’t get to rearrange it.”
The rest of the team let out a series of mock groans and Hen turned to Chim with an annoyed “Chimney…” before they all gathered together around the counter; all eyes on Jee-Yun.
Bobby nodded, suddenly not able to talk past the lump in his throat as Maddie handed Jee to him. She gave him an understanding look and stepped back, pulling a camera out of her bag. “Smile for Momma!” she told Jee, snapping a picture.
Everybody laughed as, instead of giving the instructed smile, Jee gave Maddie a dirty look and turned away from the camera.
“She’s worse about getting her picture taken than I was as a baby,” Maddie laughed, tickling Jee under her chin.
Jee giggled before looking up at Bobby, her dark eyes pensive.
“Hello, there,” Bobby greeted, looking down at the beautiful little girl in his arms. “My name is Bobby,” he told her. “I’m a friend of your parents.”
Jee grinned and reached up, grabbing his cheek with one little hand while patting his chest with the other.
“She likes you,” Maddie laughed.
“Ugoboo,” Jee agreed, leaning her head against Bobby’s shoulder.
Tears sprang to Bobby’s eyes as he rubbed her back gently. His heart hurt, but it was a good kind of hurt this time.
“Hey, no fair!” Buck said with a mock pout, leaning over the counter. It took her at least an hour before she decided she liked me!
“You don’t get to complain about that! She didn’t decide she liked me for three hours! And I lived with them for a while!” Albert groused back, still grinning at the scene in front of him.
“Bobby’s special, guys,” Hen said, her arm wrapped affectionately around Chimney. “We all knew it, and Jee-Yun has just confirmed it.”
Bobby laughed softly through his tears as he glanced around at his entire pseudo-family. “Thank you,” he said softly, looking back down at Jee. “I appreciate the vote of confidence.”

Here’s the full Headcanon fic that came from the ask @fearlessbuck sent me. Unbeta’d, so any mistakes are mine and mine alone.
Buck had realized how Eddie got when Buck had taken Christopher to do things, or when he babysat Jee-Yun. He would be lying if he said he didn’t deliberately ask sometimes to spend time with Christopher alone, just to get the sweet, sappy side of Eddie later.
The first time it happened, Buck had thought it was a fluke. How Eddie had still trusted Buck with Christopher after the tsunami incident was beyond Buck; however, Eddie had said that Christopher saw Buck “saving him” that day, and Eddie launched into a speech about how many times he’d failed Christopher and that he’d never stop trying, and that Eddie knew Buck wouldn’t stop trying either. Then came the bombshell that “there’s no one I trust more with my son more than you” (Buck would forgive the “not Abuela, and only half a Carla'' comparison). Eddie had recommended something inland (like the zoo) instead of the Pier, and Buck had decided that was a perfect plan.
Buck tried not to send too many pictures; he knew Eddie was on shift. But there were just some that he couldn’t resist. Like Christopher standing next to the “How Tall Am I?” polar bear sign, Christopher staring at the tigers with wide eyes, and the one of Buck and Christopher smiling in front of the otters that were floating (and holding hands). Buck didn’t get any responses back, but he hadn’t figured he would; Eddie was probably really busy on shift.
When Eddie came to get Christopher that night, there was a look that Buck couldn’t quite place; it seemed like Eddie wanted to say something, but Christopher was quickly falling asleep, so Eddie left. Buck did get a thank you text though.
Then the lawsuit happened. And the grocery store scene. Buck hadn’t realized how much Christopher was missing him (and it seemed like Eddie was missing Buck too, to be honest, but Buck wasn’t going to dig into that right now); he had dropped the lawsuit, but he and Eddie seemed to be on shaky ground. They started to find their footing again, and then it was like old times, and Buck was back to movie nights with Christopher and Eddie. There was still that look, but Buck wasn’t sure how to bring it up.
The well incident. Buck hated this one the most. He had tried to dig through 30 feet of mud to get to Eddie; there was no denying what he felt for Eddie now. Buck had waited until Eddie had been released from the hospital and told Eddie; Eddie had confessed to Buck his feelings as well, and they had started slowly easing into a relationship.
Buck had finally figured it out though, and it wasn’t a fluke. Eddie always got more soft and sappy whenever Buck was doing things with Christopher, and their alone time after that reflected it too- Eddie was a lot softer and sweeter with his kisses and the sex was a lot slower and more romantic (instead of the hurried/more frantic kind they normally had). Buck started working on ways to get to do things with Christopher by himself; he really liked seeing this soft side of Eddie. If Eddie had figured out that Buck knew how Eddie felt when he saw Buck and Christopher together, he never said anything. He just kept taking Buck up on his offers of “me time” and let Buck and Christopher do their thing.
Then Jee-Yun came along. Seeing Buck with his baby niece did things to Eddie. He knew he was being pretty open with his feelings on this one, but he didn’t care. Especially when Buck kept volunteering to babysit so Maddie and Chimney could have some “parent’s alone time”. Eddie had gotten roped into a few of the babysitting days, and after most of them, he’d either sent Christopher to his Abuela’s, Tia Pepa’s, or to a friend’s house for a sleepover so that he and Buck could have their own “alone time” and take things as slow as they wanted to. Eddie would drag it out and whisper “I love you” and all the words that he normally couldn’t say.
“You know, I love this soft, sweet, sappy side of you.” Buck said one time as they lay in bed, Buck absentmindedly tracing patterns on Eddie’s chest.
“I kind of like it too.” Eddie admitted. “It’s a different feeling.”
The next time they babysat Jee-Yun, it was Eddie who had requested to do it. Buck could only flush a little as they picked her up; Chimney and Maddie looked at them like they knew something was going on, but they didn’t say anything (they really could use the sleep; Jee-Yun had been up all night screaming, which meant they hadn’t got any sleep themselves).
Jee-Yun was a little more fussy than normal and didn’t want to be put down; Eddie put the baby sling on without hesitation and started pacing around the living room to get her to calm down; it was Buck this time who had the “heart eyes” (as Christopher had taken to calling them). It stirred up a feeling that Buck hadn’t felt in a long time.
After getting Jee-Yun back home to Chimney and Maddie, they sat on the couch, each nursing a beer (Christopher was over at Hen and Karen’s house for a sleepover with Denny and Harry). Buck decided to bring up the topic.
“Um, have you ever thought about any more kids?” Buck asked, taking a long sip of his beer.
“You know, I really hadn’t,” Eddie admitted. “Christopher is more than enough for me. But, now that I’ve been around Jee-Yun, and seeing you with her, it’s crossed my mind.” Eddie stopped to take a drink of his beer. “I’m not going to lie, I’m not looking forward to the late night feedings, the screaming all night, or the potty training.” Eddie stopped again. “You know though, I would be here for all of it though. Get a chance to do it all right this time.”
“You did a good job with Christopher.” Buck said, reaching out for Eddie’s hand. “We don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. I just thought we should talk about it.”
“Yeah, we should.” Eddie said. “I don’t know. Maybe in the future, once things slow down some. I’m not going to lie, it would be really hot to see you holding a baby and singing lullabies.”
“Am I still going to be hot when I have baby puke in my hair and am so sleep deprived I put coffee creamer on my cereal instead of milk?” Buck laughed.
“Fair point.” Eddie laughed. “Table it for now?”
“Sure.” Buck said. “We can be the coolest uncles to Jee-Yun, and the best dads to Christopher. That works for me.”
“Me too.” Eddie drained the rest of his beer and stood up, reaching for Buck’s hand. “Come on. Bedtime.”
“Bedtime or bedtime?” Buck playfully asked, draining his own beer.
“Your call.” Eddie said. “I’ll have you know, my very skilled hands got your niece to sleep. I’m pretty sure I can put you to sleep quickly. Or we can have some fun first and then we can sleep.”
“I like option 2.” Buck grinned.
“I figured you’d say that.” Eddie said.
*
Eddie was running his fingers through Buck’s hair as they started drifting off. “Hey Buck?”
“Yeah Eddie?”
“I love you. And you’re a great dad to Christopher. In case I don’t tell you enough.”
“Thanks. You’re a great dad too. I love you.” Buck closed his eyes and let Eddie’s hand in his hair lull him to sleep.

“I’m here! Dinner can begin,” Buck announced once he stepped inside Maddie and Chim’s, ignoring the way that Maddie rolled her eyes as he made his way past her.
“Contrary to what you might think, we weren’t waiting on you to start dinner,” Maddie said.
“Ouch, you wound me.” Buck pouted, holding a hand to his heart as he spotted Chimney on the couch with Jee-Yun. “Thankfully there is at least one person here that’s happy to see me.”
“She’s too little to know better, Buck.” Chim waited until Buck took Jee-Yun from his arms before joining Maddie in the kitchen, and Buck trailed behind them.
“Jee loves her Uncle Buck.” Chim smirked at Maddie and she let out a small laugh, then opened the oven to check on the chicken. Buck frowned at their obvious teasing before looking down at his niece. “Don’t you, sweetheart?” She cooed up at him, and Buck smiled at her.
“I honestly don’t know how either one of you gets anything done with this adorable little face to look at.”
When neither one of them responded, Buck looked up and found both of them watching him.
“What?” Buck asked with a pinched brow.
Chimney grinned. “She has you wrapped around her finger already.”
Buck rolled his eyes, then spotted several pies on the kitchen island. “Um, Jee hitting the sweets already?”
“No, those would be courtesy of Josh. Didn’t you hear that he has been celebrating everything lately?”
Buck pressed his lips together. “What do you mean by everything, Mads?”
“It started with Applesauce Cake Day, then the other day was Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day. He made half a dozen for dispatch, and we only finished two of them. If you couldn’t tell that already by the number of pies that are on the counter, I brought the leftovers home… and you’re not even seeing the one that Chim polished off last night.”
“Well, I’m not gonna complain because they’re delicious,” Chim commented, as he finished preparing the salad.
“Maybe, but it’s also the reason that dinner tonight is so vegetable heavy. He should be celebrating National Vegetable Day instead.”
A short while later they finished up dinner, and Buck was helping Chim with the dishes, while Maddie got Jee-Yun ready for bed, feeding her in the living room.
“So, do you know if Josh is joining us later?” Buck asked casually, wiping down the plate.
Chimney tilted his head to the side a little to look at Buck more completely, holding another dripping plate. “Any particular reason you ask?” Buck shrugged, trying to go for casually interested but knowing he’d been utterly failing at it lately.
“I just wasn’t sure if I was going to be taking just your money, or his too.”
“You won’t be taking anyone’s money, because we know if Maddie is playing that she’s going to slaughter us all.” Buck laughed, knowing that Chimney was right, as he added the plate to the pile on the counter. “And to answer your question, he said he’d be over around 8, so you’ve got 5 minutes, give or take.”
Josh arrived a few minutes later, and Maddie met him at the door before leading him inside. Jee-Yun had already been put to bed, much to Josh’s disappointment. “I can’t believe you put her to bed before I got here.”
“Well next time get here earlier,” Maddie said with a roll of her eyes.
“I was busy, Maddie.”
Buck couldn’t help the teasing smile that spread across his face. “Were you baking more pies?”
“No,” Josh said, “it’s not Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day anymore.” He raised an eyebrow.
“So you’re saying if we finish these off that you’re not going to make more?” Chim asked.
“That is exactly what I’m saying,” Josh replied with a laugh.
“Sorry, Chim.” Buck glanced over at his brother-in-law who sat beside him at the table, pouting. “I tried.”
“Howie!” Maddie scolded, smacking his arm lightly with exasperation. “I swear I’m going to make Buck take all of the leftovers to his place.”
And if Josh made them, Buck really wouldn’t mind.
*
Buck walked into Josh’s house and was immediately hit with the overwhelming aroma of coconut. Josh had been planning to host a spa day at his place for a week now, with both Buck and Maddie coming over to reap the benefits of yet another celebration day, but Buck hadn’t been prepared to be hit by a wall of coconut.
Buck hated coconut, the smell and taste of it— but even more than that, the texture of shredded coconut was enough to gag about. Thankfully he was just there for a spa day, so he wouldn’t need to worry about that at least.
“I, uh, brought over some sliced cucumbers, even though Maddie said you didn’t need anything for today. She always uses these when she does a mask.”
“Too bad she won’t be here to benefit from them,” Josh said ruefully, to which Buck raised his eyebrow. “She had to bail, said Chimney had to work, and Jee had an appointment that she couldn’t miss.”
“She—” is a liar, Buck finished in his head, fighting off a frown. What the hell? “She’s really gonna miss out, huh?”
“Yeah, I mean I really catered today around things I know Maddie likes, but…” Josh trailed off with a sheepish smile and shrugged. “I hope it’s not a total waste.”
“I’m sure everything is perfect.” Buck paused, glancing around to see if he could tell what Josh had set up. “So I smell coconut, what is that from?”
“Everything,” Josh answered with a laugh. “It’s National Coconut Day. So naturally, we’re celebrating with everything coconut. Follow me.”
Coconut. Everything.
He was going to kill Maddie.
“I just finished making some pina coladas if you want one?” Josh offered, adding a pineapple wedge to the rim of two glasses before holding one out to Buck.
“A little fancier than my usual beer, but I think I can be a little adventurous today.” Buck chuckled, taking the drink from Josh’s outstretched hand. He ignored the jolt that he felt when Josh’s fingers brushed against his. “Thank you.”
Josh grabbed a drink of his own before casting a glance in Buck’s direction. “I don’t think that being adventurous is really a stretch for you.” Josh paused, then added. “I seem to remember more than one rescue, particularly the ones that Maddie was freaking out about because they were risky.”
Buck shrugged his shoulders, wearing a sheepish smile as he followed Josh towards the living room. “That’s my job.”
Josh laughed, sitting down on the couch and shifting his body so that he was angled towards Buck. “So are you saying that it’s more adventurous for you to drink a pina colada than to rush into a burning building, or rappelling off the side of a cliff?”
Buck laughed lightly, feeling his cheeks warm, while his mind was on an endless loop of I hate coconut. Maybe it hadn’t exactly been adventurous of Buck to drink the pina colada, but for the effort that Josh had put into the day, he couldn’t let him down by telling him he hated everything coconut. He brought the drink up to his lips, taking a small sip before answering, trying not to react to the sudden taste flooding his tongue.
“Jumping into action at the scene when someone needs to be saved, that’s just instinct kicking in,” Buck explained, setting his glass on the coffee table, letting his gaze settle on Josh.
“That’s because you’re a hero,” Josh stated, setting his own glass down. “And heroes deserve to be pampered.”
“Josh, I’m not a hero,” he argued.
“I seem to remember watching you, trapped under a fire rig just doing your job and responding to a call, then in the months that followed you fought with everything you had to get back out there. Saved hundreds of people when you were off-duty during the tsunami. I could go on,” Josh said, “if you want.”
“Um,” Buck cleared his throat, running a hand over the back of his neck as Josh explained why he thought Buck was a hero. He shook his head a little. “That won’t be necessary.”
“In that case, I’ll be right back. Make yourself at home.”
Buck tried not to let his mind linger too long on how the atmosphere at Josh’s felt different today, more intimate without Maddie’s presence. She was always there, as a buffer, keeping Buck from making a fool of himself in front of Josh. Yet today, there was nobody to save Buck from himself.
Josh came back a few minutes later, setting a round container on the table and the sliced cucumber beside them. He told Buck to go wash his face before they got started, and when Buck returned, Josh set a pillow on the couch.
“Lay down,” Josh instructed.
Buck hesitated for a moment before laying down, resting his head on the pillow. “You know, we could do yours first—I know this is more your thing with Maddie, and I—”
“Anybody ever tell you that you’re argumentative?” Josh looked down at him, mouth turned up in amusement.
Buck rolled his eyes, watching as Josh grabbed the pouffe to sit on, his expression turning more focused as he moved the coffee table closer, making sure that what he needed was in reach. “Usually they just tell me I’m a terrible listener.”
“Close your eyes and relax.” Buck hesitated as he looked up at Josh, watching as Josh’s smile turned into a grin. “You know, they’re not wrong.”
“You always invite guys over and then call them argumentative and bad listeners?” Buck asked, finally closing his eyes.
“And they say I’m the dramatic one,” Josh teased. Buck heard him shuffle around on the table, then a moment later Josh’s voice again. “I’m going to put a warm washcloth on your face first. Just relax with it for a minute.”
The heat from the washcloth felt soothing against his skin, and Buck felt himself relaxing more, despite how this afternoon came to be just him and Josh having a spa day at home. Josh’s fingers brushed against his forehead a minute later, removing the cooling washcloth from his skin.
“So, what’s your skin regimen like anyway?”
“Uh,” Buck laughed softly. “Usually just soap and water. I don’t really have a skin regimen.”
“Well that’s offensive.” Josh’s eyes widened comically as he looked down at Buck. “First of all, that’s so bad for your skin, especially given that you deal with smoke exposure on a regular basis, not to mention the sweat. Second of all, it looks like you take great care of your skin… which is unfair, given that you absolutely do not.”
“Are you going to convert me into a skin care enthusiast?”
“I see that sarcasm is definitely a Buckley family trait.” Josh glared at him playfully. “I’m going to apply the mask now. It’s just avocado, coconut oil and some nutmeg. It’s supposed to be great for anti-aging and really moisturizing, not that your naturally flawless skin needs it.” Josh’s gaze flickered away from his, grabbing the container from the table, collecting the paste onto a brush before moving closer.
“I was really not expecting a green mask. You’re going to make me look like Maddie all those times I teased her when we were growing up,” Buck said.
Josh laughed, beginning to spread it over Buck’s skin, making Buck close his eyes again. It only took a minute before Buck’s face was thoroughly covered and Josh moved away with the container.
“Just relax for about fifteen minutes, and then we’ll get you cleaned up,” Josh said. He returned a few seconds later, setting something cool over each of his eyes, which Buck could only assume were the cucumbers.
Buck became more conscious of his breathing as the minutes passed by, the quiet of Josh’s home surrounding him. “15 minutes up yet?” Buck mumbled, not even sure if Josh was still in the room.
“Uh, just about,” Josh answered. “I’ll get you cleaned up in just another minute.” There was another stretch of silence until Buck heard the shutter of a camera, quickly followed by rapid tapping.
“Josh?”
“Just a second, Buck.”
“Josh, what are you—” Buck removed the cucumbers from over his eyes, finding Josh standing not too far away with a mischievous smile on his face. “You can’t take a picture of me like this.” Buck gaped at him.
“I mean, I already did,” Josh said with a little laugh that lit up his entire face. “And I might have accidentally sent it to your sister.”
“Accidentally?”
“Maybe intentionally.”
“You have no idea what you’ve done. I’m never going to hear the end of this. She’s going to show Chimney, and it’ll circulate around the firehouse. Hell, Chim and Hen will probably blow up the picture and post it all around the station,” Buck finished dramatically, groaning as he sat back.
Josh smirked but didn’t say anything else, although his expression made it clear that he had plenty to say. He tapped out another response on his phone before he slipped the phone into his back pocket.
“We should go get your mask cleaned off, before your face is stuck like that permanently.” Buck’s hand shot up to his face and touched the mask, and Josh snorted at the appalled expression on Buck’s face.
“You know, I think my sister has influenced you way too much for your own good.” Buck followed Josh towards the bathroom, stepping into the room and turning on the warm water. Josh grabbed a clean washcloth and handed it to him. Josh disappeared from the doorway, leaving Buck to clean the thick green mask from his face.
Buck looked at his reflection and grimaced. “I can’t believe there’s a picture of me like this floating around,” he muttered. He tried to clean the mask off of his face and to not make a mess but this was… way messier than Buck expected. “Oh my god.” Green sludge covered the sink and the counter, and it was dripping off of Buck’s face like something out of a horror movie.
“Buck? You doing alright, you’ve been in here for—” Josh’s voice broke off with laughter. “Oh… wow. What is happening here? You—wow. This is a sight.”
“You keep saying that,” Buck said, cutting a glare in his direction, resulting in a green-tinted water dripping onto the counter.
“You are a disaster, Buck. Sit down.” Josh laughed, directing him away from his position in front of the mirror until he was sitting on the closed toilet lid. Josh grabbed a hand towel to wipe at the excess water dripping from Buck’s chin, first. Josh cupped Buck’s chin, gently tilting it until he was looking up at him. Buck swallowed hard as they held each other’s gaze, and the laughter disappeared from the room, replaced instead by a tension that Buck couldn’t quite explain, but made his heart race.
Josh took his time, patting off what was wet enough to wipe from Buck’s face. He worked silently for a few minutes, stopping to rinse off the wash cloth with warm water every so often before focusing his attention on cleaning Buck’s face.
“You know I could do this myself, Josh, I—”
“I don’t mind,” Josh said softly, and tossed the dirty washcloth in the sink before grabbing the clean hand towel he’d laid out before. “Let me just make sure we’ve got it all.”
Buck couldn’t find it in him to look away, mesmerized by Josh’s focus as he cradled Buck’s face, then the way he gently tilted it to the side from where he held Buck’s chin.
“Ah, missed a spot,” Josh said.
The feeling of the warm washcloth being wiped across his brow made his eyes flutter closed. Without his vision, Buck felt like he was suddenly more aware of everything else. The way that Josh smelled, and the fact that Buck could reach out and wrap his arms around the other man due to their closeness. Josh’s fingers still gripped Buck’s chin, moving the towel lightly over Buck’s skin, and dried off the last remnants of water.
“Think we got it all,” Josh whispered into the deafening quiet.
Blinking his eyes back open, he caught Josh’s gaze when they opened. Josh smiled at him, then his eyes settled on the spot just above Buck’s eye, rubbing his thumb over the skin there . In the past, Buck had been self conscious about his birthmark, hating how it made him stand out. But at that moment, as Josh studied it with such intent, Buck was glad to have it. Josh brushed his thumb over the skin a few more times, until their eyes met again. It’s like something clicked into place at the moment their eyes met, yanking Josh out of the intimacy of the moment, his jaw dropping open the tiniest bit as he took a small step back, putting some space between them.
“Well, your skin is perfectly soft now.” Buck forced himself not to frown at the loss of Josh’s touch, his stomach twisting as he fought the desire to reach out and tug Josh closer. “Not that it wasn’t before,” Josh added.
“Thank you for that experience. And for, uh, helping with the clean up,” Buck said. He stood up from where he was seated. “Definitely went above and beyond.”
“It was my pleasure,” he said.
“Well, now it’s my turn to return the favor.” Buck smiled at Josh, trying not to let the way that Josh made him feel when he cradled his face and studied his birthmark like it was some work of art. “But I can’t promise it won’t be an even bigger mess.”
Josh laughed, and the tension between them that had been there for only a few moments dissipated. “I’d expect no less.”
*
After National Coconut Day, things felt different between Josh and Buck, like somehow their relationship was no longer held together by Maddie. They began to talk regularly as the days passed, they texted and made plans to get together soon. Josh, of course, had another celebration day in mind—and after how the last one had turned out, Buck couldn’t find it in him to necessarily discourage it.
Until he’d learned that it was another food-centered celebration: National Fried Chicken Day. Josh was very invested, sending Buck links to different food blogs and recipes that he’d found on Pinterest to try: a classic southern fried chicken, buttermilk fried chicken, and even a KFC copycat recipe.
The intimacy of their home spa day played on repeat in Buck’s mind, the moment when Josh had cleaned Buck’s face, brushing his thumb tenderly over Buck’s birthmark. He’d thought Josh was going to kiss him, had even hoped that he would. In the minutes that stretched on afterwards, he’d felt disappointed, but shoved that feeling aside to unpack another day. And Buck had decided that maybe today was that day.
Buck sighed, looking at himself in the mirror one last time. He opted for a casual shirt and jeans since it was meant to be a low-key celebration, and grabbed his keys off of the counter on his way out.
Within twenty minutes he arrived at Josh’s door. Josh opened the door in an apron, which was certainly a look. “You’re just on time. I was about ready to get started.”
Buck smiled as he followed Josh inside, back towards the kitchen. He watched as Josh set a pan on the front burner of the stove, then moved fluidly to grab the bottle of the oil.
Now or never, Buckley.
“Step away from the oil, Josh,” Buck said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“What? How am I going to make fried chicken without the oil?” Josh turned his head to look at Buck, who had moved closer now, standing beside him next to the stove.
“You’re not.”
“Buck,” Josh drew his name out slowly, thankfully having not yet turned on the burner, his full attention now on Buck. “We’re here to celebrate National Fried Chicken Day—”
“But your arteries are pleading with you to not do that,” Buck explained. “We could celebrate something else today.”
Josh frowned at Buck’s words. “Like what? You couldn’t have mentioned this days ago? What could we possibly celebrate that we just happen to have everything for?”
Buck trapped his bottom lip between his teeth, then dared to catch Josh’s gaze again. “It’s International Kissing Day.” Of course the only reason Buck wanted to celebrate that with Josh was for the betterment of his health.
“…and how would we celebrate that?”
“The only logical way that I could come up with is that we could kiss.”
A nervous laugh shook out of Josh, and a flush colored his cheeks. “Buck, I’m not going to let you kiss me just because you don’t want me clogging my arteries.”
“Well,” Buck swallowed past the nervous anxiety bubbling in his chest. “What about letting me kiss you because I like you, and this is all just a poorly crafted excuse to kiss you, masked as concern for your arteries?”
Josh’s eyes flickered to Buck’s lips, then back up to his eyes. “I-I think I’d be okay with it, if that were the case,” Josh whispered.
The corners of Buck’s pulled up into a smile, though his heart didn’t stop racing. “That’s good to hear,” Buck murmured, stepping forward to close in the little bit of space between them. He reached out, cupping Josh’s cheek as he looked down into his face. “Because I was really hoping that was what you would say.”
Buck leaned in as Josh’s eyes fluttered closed, and their noses barely brushed as he pressed his lips to Josh’s. The kiss was soft and sweet, like Josh, not frantic or urgent, and the tenderness made Buck’s heart swell. Josh’s hands ghosted against Buck’s sides before they settled at his waist. Finally, Buck dropped his hand away from Josh’s jaw, studying his features when he did.
“I hope that was okay,” Buck whispered, not able to tear his gaze away, as he cringed at his words.
“It was great, but…”
“But?” Buck asked.
“But I don’t think you can classify one kiss as a celebration,” Josh explained, a smile tugging at his lips.
“It would be like celebrating Strawberry Rhubarb Pie day with only one pie.”
“A travesty,” he murmured, sliding a hand to the back of Buck’s neck, pulling him back in for another kiss.
Buck decided, maybe he wouldn’t kill Maddie after all.

We finally get a Buck and Christopher scene!! Buck should let Chris know he'll never "love" Maddies kid more than he loves him and he'll never leave him for her. The whole show revolves around madney and their kid lately and i'm sorry but i'm not trying to see them every week when we didn't even get a Buck/Chris scene since 4x8 and it was such an important scene. We've never even seen Buck interact with the baby, it feels so unnatural to hear him gushing about her and not even a mention of Chris
Hi anon! Thanks for the message!
I don't really agree with you, and here's why.
First of all I don't think Chris would ever be jealous of Jee-Yun. He is a really smart kid, Buck is his best friend/really important person/not his father and he already had a conversation about Buck not leaving him.
Second, I'm sorry you don't like the Madney storyline, but this is an ensemble show, Jee-Yun was just born it's natural that the focus falls on them for a while, opposite to a buck-chris-eddie dynamic we already know. And they had only a part of the episode's focus (episode about parenthood and they are newly parent so was kinda obvious?), as you can see here in this amazing time screen analysis. I actually suggest you also check others episodes posts and all season 4a, cause it feels that some characters have more or less screen time than they actually have!
Third. Buck is not a father, he may have sometimes a parental role (Honestly I don't see it that much) but he is not chris's father. Eddie is and fandom sometimes forgets he is a single father, role that he has 24/7 and does in the best way possible for him. That's way I think they didn't add a big role for Eddie in last episode, because he doesn't have parenthood problems, opposite to madney, henren and athena. That little scene at the end was because yes he is a father, in a relationship were he still choose his kids first and it's a normal domestic scene (that I think won't last, sure, but still).
Fourth. I do agree it's sad that we haven't seen Buck with Jee-Yun and I don't know if it's because of Covid or anything else, but I hope we'll see them soon enough. But Buck gushing over his niece is the most normal thing! I have a niece and I swear I talk about her every single time I can! The thing is, Buck is a new uncle, a role he has by rights and he is proud of it, and her. I don't really understand why sometimes fandom make Buck's love for Jee-Yun and Chris like a competition. He loves them both, he'll give his time to both of them, in different way cause they are different, and his role with them is different.
Fifth. How many times does Buck actually gushes over Jee-Yun? Correct me if I'm wrong but only one, when they are in the station's kitchen, right? When he thanks Eddie for his joke. What should he have said? "No, Chim, Chris is cuter?" Or "Chris's gassy face is better?" I don't think so.
I know lot of people love Buck, I'm one of them, but the show is not about him, that's what makes 911 so special is the ensemble of all the cast in every episode, so sometimes some characters must have less screen time, and Buck had already his fair share in 4a.
Other note, filming with kids is really hard, filming with kids during a pandemic is even harder, so they maybe had to cut some scene with kids. But we'll have a Buck-chris scene in the finale!
So, I can't wait to see chris and Buck's scene in the finale, I ofc hope it will be something buddie related, even though I don't think it will be in a romantic way, but for now I'm really enjoying the ride. Maybe a little more of Eddie would be nice.

here’s my shoddily slopped together mainverse canon divergence :
SEASON 3B: maddie makes the decision to go back to nursing shortly before finding out that she’s pregnant. being an operator was always kind of meant as a temporary thing until she felt like she wasn’t looking over her shoulder anymore, and she’s always preferred to be more hands on than anything else.
she does not skip out on may’s graduation party to take a pregnancy test. she just makes buck finish whatever wine she had left over, and leaves at an appropriate time.
at no point does she stop seeing her therapist. the appointments just get further between, to where she sees him once a month or so.
buck is told she’s pregnant via a t-shirt gifted to him that says “uncle mode activated” or something cheesy like that. it’s on brand, i will not say it’s not. he’s also legal guardian in case anything happens to maddie or chim.
SEASON 4A: maddie’s insistent that her and chim not move in together, and it’s not until she’s pregnant out to there and has a hard time doing some stuff on her own that she agrees to let him move in with her. buck’s room at the townhouse gets turned into a nursery (sorry buck, we still love u).
she does....not call her parents to come to la. i don’t care. fight me over this. i’ve had it in my mind since season two that she doesn’t speak to them unless necessary, and i’m not going to change that now. they show up anyways, and she tries to make nice by inviting them over for dinner. she doesn’t try to make up with them after the dinner table scene.
there’s no “we always had each other” scene. the ending of buck begins 100% should have been both maddie and buck recognizing that she always did the best she could to protect him, but her best isn’t always what he needed from her.
she spends....several sessions with her therapist working through the shit that her parents did/said to her over those few days bc it was a lot for her to handle.
SEASON 4B: jee-yun is born at home. i’m big attached to maddie having loved ones around when jee’s born bc maddie spent so much time being alone without family. it mostly happens by accident bc maddie’s stupid. major shout out to eddie for showing up to save the day.
honestly, thank god she wasn’t at work when they brought eddie in. she tries to show up for buck, she really does, but even if she had, she openly would not have had the mental or emotional capacity to be there for him in that moment.
maddie’s PPD symptoms start to manifest themselves shortly after she returns to work, and they largely relate to her feeling like a bad mother, isolating herself from her relationships (especially buck and josh), finding little to no joy in any of the things that she normally does for fun, etc., etc., etc.
she’s not opposed to going back to a therapist, bc again, she never stopped seeing him in the first place. it was more like “okay i have a new baby so i don’t have time to schedule more appointments bc i’m taking care of her” and then things started going downhill, and before she knew it, she needed to start seeing him at least one to two times per week in order to properly function. her end results are largely related to taking medications and taking a couple of weeks off of work to get her mind going in the right direction, since the last thing she wants is for her issues to affect her treatment of her patients.
