an incomplete list of northern-californian andrew minyard shenanigans
he gets pissed if anyone asks him if he can surf
the beaches are cold and rocky and gross, no one wants to learn surfing up here
he's totally used to weird weather (a 90° day can have a 50° night) but he absolutely cannot stand extreme temperatures
anything above 100° is reason to riot, and anything below a 40-50° is a good excuse to stay under blankets the whole day
hot days are more common in the bay area than hail, and there's never any snow, so moving to south carolina was a slap in the face
"nicky, do i need more warm clothes or more summer clothes?"
"both, andrew. both."
"why do you not have normal weather systems? just pick one"
andrew literally always carries a jacket with him out of habit
in the south, weather can fluctuate every few days, whereas in california, the weather literally changes every hour and there's almost always a breeze in the bay area
it takes him a long time to realize that hot days in the south just... stay hot. no need for a jacket.
(he still usually has one on hand though. never hurts to be prepared)
san francisco is so. goddamn. boring.
he might not have been there very often as a foster kid, but living like 20 minutes away from it in oakland makes the city really lose its novelty
(also the sfo and oakland rivalry can get very passionate at times. he was just always destined to dislike san francisco)
unironically uses the word "hella." he didn't realize it was a californian thing until it accidentally slipped out in front of the foxes and he got some very confused (and gleeful) stares
andrew calls the two main parts of california "norcal" and "socal" (for northern california and southern california). he cannot for the life of him understand why everyone else is so confused
he has a sort of inherent dislike for socal. he may have literally never been there but... the vibes. he just can't stand them
(andrew refers to socal as "fake california" in his head, as many norcal people do)
honestly, he's a pretty environmental person (aside from the smoking). you really can't live in the bay area without being overly conscious about recycling and sustainability
(he'll constantly bully kevin into separating trash, recyclables, and compostables. kevin never had to do that in the nest but andrew? he's very particular about this.
"kevin. how can you say you're healthy when you're making the planet unhealthy?"
"it's really not that big of a deal—" "it is. shut up and recycle.")
andrew absolutely detests the "sunny, warm, beach" stereotype of california, seeing how inaccurate it is for most of the state
neil likes to joke that jeremy and andrew represent the two extremes of california — sunny and bright vs cold and cloudy
andrew does not find this funny
(okay, maybe a little)
the biggest shock he ever faced was that safeway (a grocery store) wasn't a nationwide chain
apparently it's just a california thing (update: maybe a pacific coast thing?? idek)
"aaron, if tilda's not going to buy groceries, we will just go to safeway ourselves"
"andrew. there are no safeways here."
"... what"
"i was shocked too"
(it ends up being the first thing the twins bond over when they officially meet)

Surfs up - JJ Maybank x reader
Tumblr media
Pairing: JJ Maybank x Female!reader
Word count: 3,128 (I got a bit carried away)
Warnings: lots of fluff, a steamy make out, and swearing
Summary: JJ is in desperate need of a job, and you have a dream to learn to surf. What happens when you offer JJ a job for your dad with a wage he can’t say no to as long as he teaches you how to surf.
A/n: send in requests for JJ and Rafe, and I’d also be willing to write for John B. and Pope. Also I’ve only been surfing a couple times so if I got some stuff wrong I apologize, I’m just going off what my dad taught me last time we went on vacation to California.
All you wanted to do was learn how to surf. You begged your dad to buy you a board, and after weeks of trying to convince him he finally gave in. Most likely because you would mention how you wanted one every chance you could. Unfortunately though none of your friends had any desire to surf instead they preferred to swim in their pools or play golf at the country club. You were determined to learn how to surf, but you were also too scared to do it alone which put you in a bit of a predicament.
You were currently at the surf hot spot sitting on a towel next to your brand new board watching the surfers from a distance. You didn’t see a familiar face until you saw a certain blonde boy you recognized from parties. You knew his name was JJ, you also were aware that he was troublemaker, and  he was a pogue and you knew that, but he was a damn good surfer. You watched him ride practically every wave, and you were truly impressed, and the moment he stepped out of the water you decided that you would ask him to teach you. You lifted yourself from the towel and made your way towards the soaking wet boy.
“Hey, you’re JJ right” you asked, startling him. His eyes were looking at you like you were crazy.
“Um yes why are you talking to me” he questioned.
“Well for one I have a right to talk to anyone I want, and I need your help” you stated and he just stared at you dumbfoundingly.
“What makes you think I would help you with anything kook” he scuffed.
“I want you to teach me how to surf” you said standing a confident front.
“Yeah, definitely not, I don’t have time to teach you how to surf because I just lost my job, and even if I didn’t just lose my job I would rather drown than have to spend time with a selfish kook like you” he retorted and began to walk away. You weren’t going to lie that kind of hurt. You usually weren’t talked to like that and for some reason you were really upset that he hated you, and he didn’t even know you. Although he hurt your feelings you were determined to make this work. You remembered your dad was looking for some to tend to the boat and do yard work, so you were going to offer him a job with a high starting price you’d convince your dad to pay him under the condition that he taught you how to surf.
“I can get you a job that pays really well” you blurted, and he whipped his head to turn back and look at you.
“What”
“My dad is looking for someone to tend to our boats, and do yard work type of stuff, and I can convince him to pay whatever you ask as long as it's reasonable” you declared.
“I’m assuming the catch is I have to teach you how to surf” he guessed, walking back towards you.
“You would 100% correct JJ, and my board is already here, so we can even start today” you smiled hopefully, and JJ couldn’t help but admire your determination.
“Fine, and then after that we settle this job thing” he nodded, and he followed you to your board.
“So I waxed it like the internet said, and I’ve watched videos, but the reason I asked you is because I’d rather have someone helping me in real life to make sure I don’t drown” you laughed picking up your surfboard.
“None of your kook friends are willing to surf” he smirked, and you turned around rolling your eyes to see him sitting on your towel obviously checking you out.
“No, and eyes on my face buddy” and he just laughed. You started to walk towards the water and he didn’t follow. “Are you coming” you yelled.
“I don’t know where you're going, but if you never surfed before I have to teach you how to get up outside the water first”
“And you decided to let me walk away instead of telling me” you snapped stomping back towards him.
“It's a nice view when you walk away” he flirted, and you rolled your eyes.
“You’re disgusting” you spat, but started laughing, and he laughed along with you. He grabbed the board from you and placed it on the sand. He placed his board next to yours, and laid down on it. He then looked up at you gesturing to you the same. You got down on the board, and laid down then turning your head to face him.
“Alright so It’s quite simple getting up, the hard part is balancing” he explained. “So what you are going to do is place both your hands on the board, and then you are going to use you arms to push yourself up almost like a jump, and once you get both of your feet planted you lift your hands up, and try to balance as best as you can” he showed you the motions after explaining, and you were paying attention, but you couldn’t help but watch the way his muscles contracted. The boy was hot that's for sure, and you couldn’t deny that. “Alright now you try”
You placed your hands on the board, and bounced up standing on both your feet, and looked at him to see his reaction. “So how was that” you asked.
“Good but you have to stand more like this” he suggested trying to show you, but you weren’t getting it. He walked up to you and it looked like he wanted to touch you to help your position because he was hesitant.
“You know you can touch me I don’t bite” you laughed, and his face got a bit red which made your heart skip a beat. He grabbed both your arms placing them how they should be. He then instantly grabbed your bare waist moving it to the side. Everywhere he touched made your skin feel on fire. You hadn’t realized it, but you haven’t been touched by a boy in ages, and you were craving touch which intensified the feeling even more. Once he was satisfied with your position he stepped back, and told you to try again, but  have this be your ending position. You tried again multiple times until you finally got it, and you ecstatic. You gave JJ a high five, and jumped back on the board doing it again. “So can we try in the water now?” you asked.
“Not today” he said and you frowned. “But tomorrow we will because I got to get home, and tomorrow I hope you will have everything settled about the job”
“Of course I’ll meet you here tomorrow at 12:00 sharp got it”
“Sounds good to me princess” he winked, adn with that he picked up his board and left the beach, leaving you wanting more.
--
It was 11:45 and you were already at the beach. Your dad had agreed to hire JJ at the rate he wanted since he was also teaching you how to surf, and he told you to bring JJ over to start after your surfing lesson. You placed the surfboard on the sand, and began practicing what you did yesterday, when you heard a voice from behind you.
“Ah you’re a great student, getting here early, and practicing” he laughed, and you turned around sticking your tongue out.
“I’m extremely determined” you stated.
“I can tell,” he chuckled.
“You said we can go into the water today so where's your board” you asked.
“I’m teaching you how to surf, I'm not surfing with you. I’m gonna take you out in the water, and push the board for you to help you get momentum” he said while he took his shirt off. You tried so hard not to watch, but you couldn’t help yourself. You were practically gawking at his body, but before you could tell you shook your head looking down at the ground. You already had the rope attached to your board around your ankle, and you had your board held to the side. He began walking towards the water, and you followed suit. You enter the water and the cold makes you shiver. Once you got about waist deep JJ had you get on the board.
“Alright there aren’t big waves today so this is a perfect day for a beginner. Once I see a potential wave I’ll push you, and I’m going to have you paddle, and try to get up. You aren’t going to get it right away so don’t get too frustrated Y/n”
“Sounds good to me” you smiled. Once JJ got you far enough into the water he stopped, and was holding onto your board using it to float as you waited.
“So what got you so inspired to learn to surf” he asked. His face was pretty close to yours because he was using the front of your board to float.
“My brother is going to college in Hawaii right now, and he surfs literally all the time, and whenever we talk he tells me how amazing, and cool it is. I just want to be able to do it so when I go visit him or when he comes home I can show him that I can do something besides tan at the pool since he seems to think I can’t do anything besides that” you ranted as the board went over small waves.
“So you’re learning how to surf to prove a point” he asked.
“Well kind of, and I don’t want people to think I’m just your usual kook who doesn’t challenge themselves to do anything, and gets everything handed to them” you sighed.
“I admire that you know, thats says a lot about you as a person, and I haven’t met really any kooks with that mind set”
“So you don’t hate me” you asked
“I never said I hated you”
“I don’t know” you trailed “our first interaction you definitely seemed like you hated me”
“Well now I know you're not the average kook so I tolerate you” he laughed, and you rolled your eyes playfully pushing him from the board. He went under for a second and then popped back up looking into the horizon. “Looks like we got some good waves coming”
“Finally” you laughed.
“Remember what I said, once you are riding the wave and feel ready try, and stand up like we were doing on the beach no fancy moves just ride the wave straight to shore and i'll meet you where you fall okay”
“Sounds good” and with that he began to push you and you paddled, and began to get carried by the wave. You felt ready, and placed your hands on the board, and tried jumping up, and the second you released your hand you went crashing into the water the board flying in the air. You swam to the surface, and you heard JJ holler.
“Are you okay”
“Yep” you yelled back, swimming to meet him halfway.
“Alright so now I’m actually going to teach you to duck dive so when we are coming out, and there are actually waves you won’t get toppled by them” he said and you nodded. “It super simple, so I see some wave coming so when they get to us you are going to push the board down with your hands, and dive under the wave, and don’t worry I’ll help you”
“That sounds much easier than standing up on the board” giggled, and he laughed as well. When the wave came he gave you a reassuring smile, and you held your breath as he helped you dive under the wave.
After a couple more waves you were able to do it by yourself. You then tried surfing about ten more waves where you stood for one to two seconds, and then wiped out. You were definitely going to have bruises, but you were honestly having fun. It had definitely been over an hour so you told JJ you would try one more wave, and then the two of you would head to your house so JJ could start his job.
“Alright you ready” he asked.
“My arms, and legs feel like they are going to give out at any moment, but I’m ready as I’ll ever be”, you breathed.
“I’ll meet you at the shore” he said as he pushed you into the waves. You slowly placed your feet down, and they wobbled a bit, but this time you were able to stand, and you were doing it. It was nothing fancy you were just going straight forward, but you were standing on the board as the wave took you towards the the shore. You could hear JJ cheering you on, and then you jumped off the board once the wave had died swimming to shore a smile from ear to ear. Once JJ reached the shore he gave you a bog smiled, and you ran to him giving him a hug.
“I DID IT” you squealed into his wet body.
“I’m impressed for a newbie” he laughed when you pulled away, and once your excitement died down you were a bit embarrassed, by your outburst, and the hug. You both stared at each other awkwardly for a second and then you turned around to go dry yourself off. Both you got dressed, and then headed to your jeep, and he took his motorcycle following you to your house. Once you reached your house he took his helmet off walking to the jeep to meet you.
“My dad is actually quite nice just don’t be a dick, do what he says, and you’ll be fine”
“Yes Ma’am” he replied sarcastically, and you just stared at him annoyed until you both laughed.
“Also I’m definitely going to be sore tomorrow so surfing lessons will have to resume in couple days”
“Sounds good to me princess just let me know” every time he called you princess it gave you butterflies and you hated it. You walked him to your dad, and introduced the two, and then walked into your room JJ on your mind. You were interested to see where this friendship was going to go. He was much different than your kook friends and you liked that.
--
After about a month you and JJ had gotten pretty close. You were now pretty decent at surfing, and didn’t need a teacher, so now JJ was just surfing with you. You weren’t just surfing anymore either. You would go get smoothies after, and after he was done working the 2 of you would sometimes hang out, and you had for sure developed a pretty big crush on the blonde surfer boy. There was for sure tension between the two of you. It was obvious. The stolen glaces, the unnecessary touches. You felt on cloud nine when you were with him.
Currently you were tanning on a towel at the beach waiting for JJ to arrive to surf with you. You had on a bikini, and you had sunglasses on.
“Blue is definitely your color babe” you heard immediately knowing who it was. You sat up taking off your sunglasses to squint and look at JJ.
“What did I say about checking me out”
“You wish I checked you out Y/n” he laughed, and you stood up getting close to him, and whispered in his ear.
“No need to be embarrassed I check you out too” and you watched his body go visibly stiff, and when you backed up his face was bright red, and you laughed, and grabbed your surfboard, and headed to the water JJ following behind you. The wave were dead, so once the two of you had paddled far enough you stopped and sat up.
“Do you ever get scared you are going to get attacked by a shark, because I feel like I think about that way too much” you rattled off randomly.
“I mean I don’t really think about that” he laughed at your randomness.
“How though, were sitting in an ocean full of sharks that are hungry, and we technically are easy prey since we swim like one mile per hour, and not to mention we look like seals just chilling out here with our boards” you explained
“I mean when you put it like that I guess I’m a little scared of getting bit by a shark”
“See its a rational fear” you started but JJ pushed you off your board to scare you, and he was bored since no waves were coming.
“JJ” you squealed, and swam to his board flipping him off, and you went under the water popping up right next to you laughing.
“Sorry I was bored” he laughed, and you playfully wacked him. After your laughter stopped you realized how close you were. Your legs were practically touching, and your faces were inches away from each other. You longed to kiss him, and you craved his touch. You weren’t exactly sure where the confidence you had today was coming from, but you decided to let it go to waste so you connected your lips making JJ eyes widen, but he immediately began to reciprocate the movement of your lips against yours. One of his hands went to your waist pulling you into his body. Your arms wrapped around his neck playing with his wet hair. You wrapped your legs around him, and pulled him as close as possible. One of his hands used his surfboard to hold him up, and the other hesitantly moved from your waist to your ass, and squeezed, and you moaned into the kiss. JJ slipped his tongue into your mouth, and you both battled for dominance, him quickly winning. You pulled away slowly resting your forehead against his. When you opened your eyes he was still closed. He was staying the moment for as long as he could. JJ wanted to do that the second you approached him on the beach a month ago. When he opened his eyes y/e/c met his blue orbs, and you smiled. He smiled back, and kissed you one more time slowly, and full of love.
“So I was right you like me too” you breathed.
“Was it that obvious” he asked
“The constant checking me out gave it away” you giggled.
“How about we surf to shore, and you let me take you out on a date” he said cupping your face, and you melted into his touch. You pecked his lips, and separated from his body.
“Last one there is a rotten egg” you yelled hopping onto your surfboard, and you paddled away a smile on your face, because not only did you get a surfboard you got a boyfriend too.

Saving Private Ryan (1998); AFI #71
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next film on the list is one of the best films of any genre, Saving Private Ryan (1998). This is what I consider the best war film of all time despite how overwhelming it is to watch. Maybe it is because it is so difficult to watch, since the movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and received five trophies. Because of the ensemble cast and almost complete lack of women, the film was never going to garner much in the way of acting awards. Like the soldiers who they hoped to portray, these actors shouldn’t have expected much individual recognition. This movie affected me greatly, and I would like to delve into that after going through the story line.
MAJOR SPOILER WARNING!!! BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE FILM, EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE REVEALED AS FAR AS PLOT IS GIVEN AWAY BELOW!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the present day, an elderly man visits the Normandy Cemetery with his family. At a tombstone, he falls to his knees in anguish. The establishing shots showing the mass of grave stones is overwhelming from the get-go. The movie transitions from the graveyard to a landing boat at the battle of Normandy. Be prepared because it is about to get rough.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, American soldiers land at Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy invasion. Everything goes bad immediately as machine guns and mortars literally tear the landing soldiers to shreds. Soldiers are screaming for their mothers as they die on the beach. There is no going back into the ocean so the soldiers have run into the machine gun fire. Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) of the 2nd Ranger Battalion leads a breakout from the beach that makes it through to the German encampment. It is about 15 minutes of carnage and nobody will blame you if you want to forward through this until the action cools down. Elsewhere on the beach, a dead soldier lies face-down in the bloody surf; his pack is stenciled Ryan, S. It is at this point I would recommend taking a breather if you need one.
Continuing on, we are shifted to Washington, D.C., at the War Department (keep an eye out for Bryan Cranston with one arm), where General George C. Marshall learns that three of the four sons of the Ryan family were killed in action within a short time of one another. Daniel Ryan in New Guinea shortly before D-Day, Sean Ryan at Omaha Beach, and Peter Ryan at Utah Beach: all dead with letters arriving the same day for their mother. The fourth son, James Francis Ryan, is with the 101st Airborne Division somewhere in Normandy. After reading Abraham Lincoln's Bixby letter, which is meant to comfort grieving parents, aloud, Marshall orders Ryan found and brought home.
Three days after D-Day, Miller receives orders to find Ryan and bring him back. He chooses seven men from his company for the job—T/Sgt. Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Privates First Class Richard Reiben (Edward Burns) and Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel), Privates Stanley Mellish (Adam Goldberg) and Daniel Jackson (Barry Pepper), T/4 medic Irwin Wade (Giovanni Ribisi) and T/5 Timothy Upham (Jeremy Davies), an interpreter from the 29th Infantry Division. The group moves out to Neuville where they meet a squad of the 101st engaged against the enemy and both Ted Danson and Paul Giamatti show up. THe group searching for Ryan bump into a stranded French family who try to give over their children but a German sniper breaks up the party. Caparzo is killed by a German sniper, who is then killed by Jackson (who makes the most amazing shot that legends are made of). They locate a Private James Ryan (Nathan Fillion), only to learn that he is James Frederick Ryan. On the point of giving up, the Captain starts asking random passing soldiers and learns that Ryan is defending an important bridge in Ramelle.
Near Ramelle, Miller decides to neutralize a German machine gun position at a derelict radar station, despite his men's misgivings. It does not go well and the medic, Wade, is killed in the process. They take a German soldier that they name Steamboat Willie (Joerg Stadler) who gives up willingly and pleads for his life. The men are angry and want to kill the soldier since they can’t take any extras, so, at Upham's urging, Miller frees the surviving German soldier. Losing confidence in Miller's leadership, Reiben declares his intention to desert, prompting a confrontation with Horvath, who threatens to shoot him. Miller defuses the standoff by disclosing his civilian career as a high school English teacher in a small Pennsylvania town.
At Ramelle, they find Ryan (Matt Damon) among a small group of paratroopers preparing to defend the key bridge against an imminent German attack. Miller tells Ryan that his brothers are dead, and that he was ordered to bring him home. Ryan is distressed about his brothers, but is unwilling to leave his post. Miller combines his unit with the paratroopers in defense of the bridge. He devises a plan to ambush the enemy with two .30-caliber machine guns, Molotov cocktails, anti-tank mines, and improvised satchel charges made from socks. It is basically suicide so the bridge is wired to explode in case it can’t be held.
Now is a time to take a breather if you need one because it is about to get bad again. Elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division arrive with two Tiger tanks and two Marder tank destroyers, all protected by infantry. The small American group holds off the force the best they can, Although they inflict heavy damage on the Germans, nearly all of the paratroopers, along with Jackson, Mellish and Horvath, are killed. It turns out that Steamboat Willie joined the group and he personally kills Mellish with a Nazi youth knife (it is horrible) and shoots Miller Captain Miller as he attempts to blow up the bridge. Miller crawls to retrieve the bridge detonator, and fires ineffectually but defiantly with his pistol at an oncoming tank. As the tank reaches the bridge, an American P-51 Mustang flies overhead and destroys the tank, after which American armored units arrive to rout the remaining Germans. With the Germans in full retreat, Upham emerges from hiding and shoots Steamboat Willie dead, having witnessed him shooting Miller, but allows his fellow soldiers to flee.
Miller tells Ryan to “earn this” before dying from his injuries. As the scene transitions to the present, Ryan is revealed to be the veteran from the beginning of the film, and is standing in front of Miller's grave expressing his gratitude for the sacrifices Miller and his unit made in the past. Ryan asks his wife if he was worthy of such sacrifice, to which she replies that he is. The final scene shows Ryan saluting Miller's grave and fades to the American flag gently waving in the breeze.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really have a hard time getting through this film without pausing and taking a breather. I saw the film in the theater when I was 18, so my friends and I were all around the age that these soldiers would have been that rushed that beach and retook France. It was truly terrifying. Now I am old and have back issues, so I wouldn’t be put on a front line, but the kids that I work with and care for would be the exact age to be caught in a draft and that scares me even more. The creative ways in which man finds to kill one another is the greatest threat to humanity.
The first two times I saw the film, I did not realize that it was the same German soldier that the group had captured who eventually killed many of the group we were following. It really changes the message in the end. I had thought that Captain Miller had showed his humanity showing mercy, but it turns out that this mercy is misplaced. Now it seems like Spielberg is saying that neither humanity, nor religion, nor innocence, nor skill, nor even intelligence can save a man in the heat of battle. The only way to live is to watch the back of your group and protect each other like family.
There was a little bit of a travesty that occurred at the Academy in early 1999, because this film lost out in the Best Picture category to Shakespeare in Love. This is the same year that also saw Saving Private Ryan, The Truman Show, Life is Beautiful, Elizabeth, and The Thin Red Line. There had to be something behind that because I wouldn’t consider the winner even in the top 5. Shakespeare in Love is considered one of the worst Best Picture winners along with Crash and The Artist. Oscars are not everything and this movie is one of the best examples of this.
When I say that some of the scenes from this movie are difficult, I really do mean it. There was a hotline set up for people who have PTSD that was triggered by the film. One of the actual members of the 101st Airborne, Major Richard Winters, was consulted about the occurrences surrounding the attack. He said that it brought up many memories that he had worked hard to suppress because he had been taught that war veterans couldn’t express the psychological pain of battle. He also said that it was an important film that revealed what war was really like.
On Veteran’s Day in 2001 and 2004, ABC aired the film uncut with limited commercial interruptions. Living in California, I was able to watch the film on both of those occasions and remember getting my girlfriend at the time to watch in 2004. The film has become like a memorial to Americans lost in the European Campaign during WW2, so I treat viewing as a badge of honor and understanding, no matter how difficult it is to watch.
This film is a pretty easy answer when it comes to the standard questions for the most part. Does this film belong on the AFI top 100? Of course. It is the new benchmark for which all American war films will be judged. It is historically accurate, it is beautifully shot and directed, and it leaves a lasting impression far longer than just about any movie I have seen. Would I recommend it? This one has an age warning. It is not appropriate for young children because the first and last battle scenes are nightmare fuel. Even worse, they are apparently very realistic. It is hard to recommend something that is so scarring, but it will keep people for glorifying battle. It is horrific and should be avoided as much as possible. And that is a lesson that I believe this movie teaches better than any other. So please give this movie a watch and feel free to take a break if you need it.

pandemic headcanon time!
dick
by the sixth day, dick was starting to lose his mind in his apartment, and thought, “fuck it, I’m quarantining at the manor” so he showed up, in the same ratty t shirt and board shorts he’d been wearing for a week. alfred just sighed and opened the door for him to come in. he managed to dig up his robin themed fidget spinner he’d bought years ago, and constantly flicks it around. he’ll do anything to avoid the slightest boredom: walks on his hands, flips over anything he can, the smaller the space the better. he hasn’t had a vacation or break in years. he’s not used to do doing nothing. he hates it. every fiber of his being wants to punch someone in the face just to feel something. he decides the best way to quell the boredom is to pester his siblings. it’s gotten so bad that now, if he enters a room full of them, they’ll all scatter faster than he can blink.
damian
he’s an animal crossing quarantiner. you can fight me on this. and he has a weird obsession with red’s fake art. in fact, he’s picked up painting as something to fill time and will replicate the fake famous paintings. bruce thinks it’s the cutest thing in the world, and when damian throws his paintings away after finishing (he doesn’t care about them that much) bruce always swipes them and hangs them up and tweets about it. damian also is a little bit on the germ-freak side. not a lot, but the situation makes him uncomfortable. if anyone has to go outside he insists on masks and bringing hand sanitizer and staying at least seven feet apart. otherwise he’s been pretty chill.

bruce, like dick, doesn’t like being cooped up but can at least function. his kids have noticed that he spends just a little too much time on twitter nowadays though. he likes playing games at dinner like “would you rather”, but always takes it so seriously that no one else can really enjoy them. he’s slowly falling out of his work out routine. he ate cheese puffs for the first time because of jason. he hasn’t had time to read a book for fun in years, and now he’s going through stacks of them. he takes them out of tim’s room or orders them online. he’ll sit outside or in his office and read for hours. the cutest thing is when tim and bruce have both read the same one and they talk about. they’ll have full discourse about characters and plot points and arcs and sometimes even get into arguments. it’s pretty entertaining to watch.
tim
tim is, well, he’s definitely found a way to spend his time. if you walk into his room you’ll find three different boards tacked up on the walls. newpaper cutouts and prints and pictures pinned with red string on each of them. he hacked into the gcpd database and is pulling out a whole bunch of cold cases. he’s literally already solved one and called the victim’s family about it. out of all of them he’s probably broken the lockdown rules the most because his cases have required him to sometimes go out and look for people, places, etc. but he does most of it remotely. he stays in his room when he’s not working on a case, only emerging for coffee or a seriously needed melatonin. he’s trying to fix up his sleep schedule a little bit, but it’s not really working. he’s resolved to having at least one randomly placed nap in the day, which is better than constantly staying up.
steph
steph got the fuck out of gotham. as soon as word was spreading about a possible lockdown, she hugged them all goodbye and booked a cheap flight to california. she knows some people there and is currently quarantining with them. they have a beach house and everyday she’s outside: swimming, tanning, surfing, snorkeling. she’s embraced it fully as a well deserved break. and lord knows she needed it. she’s constantly facetiming the others, and making fun of them for being stuck in bleary gotham.
cassie
no one sees her, except when she comes out to swipe some snacks. at this point bruce isn’t really sure if she’s actually staying at manor. in reality, she is, she just sleeps a lot, or climbs out the window and onto the roof to chill. she sketches and sketches, having already filled up three notebooks since quarantine started. alfred is the only one who knows she sneaks out onto the roof. he doesn’t say anything. sometimes she’ll sleep up there and take pictures of the moon and stars and sunrise cause she likes something pretty to look at when she’s sad. her current thing is binge watching shows. she’s pretty obsessed with a few ones on netflix. she tends to hyperfixate on a few characters for a while before moving to others.
barbara
barbara is not at the manor. she’s staying in her own apartment but is rarely there. she volunteers anywhere she can. she sets up signs at the gotham hospital to thank workers, she lends a hand to the gcpd a lot when they’re short on staff and need help. she shuts lockdown protests tf down on social media. because of how big her platform is on twitter, she uses it to post updates and information and just keep everyone well informed. she’s the only batfam member who contracted corona with serious symptoms, but that was in march and she’s tested negative for it now. recently she ordered specific masks for everyone in the family, including alfred ofc, and sent it to them as gifts. when she’s not out volunteering or helping, she stress bakes. a lot. it’s all recipes she actually learned from bruce and she safely hands out her sweets to essential workers.
alfred
he has abandoned all responsibilities. the waynes can clean up their own damn messes. he literally just chills, checks on cassie, plays the occasional board game with dick. sometimes he does leave just to drive around fairly empty gotham. he doesn’t get out of the car and still wears a mask so it’s all safe but it’s just to relax for a bit. he’s also invested pretty heavily into some podcasts.
jason
jason is having a breakdown. he keeps spray sunscreen by his bedside, so when he’s sad he can spray it into the air and get a whiff of it for seratonin, softly whispering “beach” to himself when he does. he has stubble climbing over his face, mismatched socks, and is in the most need of a haircut. he’s always falling asleep on the couch, the kitchen floor, by the pool. he keeps trying to make food (and he sucks at cooking) and has almost cut off his fingers everytime. now he has three bandaids on his right hand and two on his left. one’s normal, another is pokémon, there’s a lightning mcqueen one, a bright pink one, and another is batman themed. now he just tosses something, anything into the microwave and consumes it mindlessly. he doesn’t know the time, or what day it is. he likes to float face down in the pool until someone comes out and says “jason, it’s time to get out before you die” and he grudgingly does so, only to go and lie face down in the living room for a while.

Switchfoot albums ranked (not including interrobang)
I've been thinking about this a lot too recently. Ik I'm late to the party on this one but I don't get on reddit often. Only got on since the band did the ama. I won't include interrobang since it's so new and ranking it seems difficult. (worst to best)
11. Learning to Breathe - While this record has some of the best written songs (Learning to Breathe, The Loser, Love is the Movement), it also has some of my least favorites (Poparazzi, Innocence Again, Living is Simple). I often just find myself bored with this album and disappointed. There are plenty of dipping of toes in ideas and then abandoning them. For instance, the beginning of Erosion is such a cool unique sound and then it's abandoned for the rest of the song. The themes of this album are also really boring to me, even when I was a christian. I just found it wasn't taking a unique perspective or doing anything different with its themes when they have done so before.
10. Where the Light Shines Through - I feel this was the band when they were the most uninspired. It feels like it was trying to sell itself to the CCM crowd and make some waves there since it's been the most consistent place of making waves and it still didn't do that. Don't get me wrong, there are great songs here (If the House Burns Down Tonight, Float, Holy Water). The first half of this album is super good. It's that back half that feels like an axe to the first half. Every song on the back half has something that disappoints me. And I'm fine with christian themes and all but it felt like this album had more just praise songs vs the questioning of faith. Would've been a great EP and it kinda made sense that they went into hiatus after this album. I also feel that the themes of the album didn't really make it to it. Jon talked about how he was in a some struggle and storm before the album and then by the time they got recording it more so became an album after the storm. And I just wonder what was going on. Cause there's only small hints. I can only feel that an album that actually talked about that or coming out of the storm would've worked but we got way after the storm and leaving a lot of good inspiration behind in a ball of mystery that we still don't know about. I don't need to know every information that he went through but the songs got effected by it.
9. New Way to be Human - I think what holds this album down the most is it's lack of direction. I can feel them trying to tackle all of their ideas from folk to pop to indie while maintaining their identity. I just don't feel these ideas get fully fleshed out. But these songs are really well written and the philosophy bleeding into these tracks and ending up being a basis of many future songs can all be tracked back to this album. This album is just a very specific listen so I don't often turn to this album. I do think Something More is the most overlooked song, with Amy's song being a close second. I also think Incomplete is a just a better version of I Turn Everything Over so it feels like a repeat track. But I really appreciate what this record represents in their career and see it as a stepping stone of sorts. (Company Car is one of their best earlier works)
8. Native Tongue - Seems a lot of people have very different feelings about this work. I think the biggest thing that makes Native Tongue feel distinct is that it feels like a Jon Foreman project with Switchfoot. Like Jon was the only one who couldn't stay away from the studio and was calling the other members. They came and were happy to but it was Jon with the initiative. At least, it's how it sounds to me. A lot of these ideas are incomplete. But when they aren't, they hit really well (Native Tongue, Dig New Streams, Oxygen). And the amount of trying different things! Granted a lot of ideas of modern production ideas but I'm glad they happened. But some I'm not too fond of (Joy Invisible, Wonderful Feeling, The Strength To Let Go). I feel this album also really fell short without a good producer. It's not the production value that doesn't work but Switchfoot works best when there is a producer there that works with them and pushes them. I fell they could have been better but it also has some solid songs in here.
7. Legend of Chin - This is one of the most fun Switchfoot records but has such a distinct sound and charm to it. I understand that a lot of songs are about girls that Jon doesn't even know any more but there isn't a bad song on here. It's all just fun from 3 guys jamming in a room. I used to not like the closing track but it's grown on me and I crave that sound more and more. Some standout tracks are Home, Chem 6A, You. With Underwater being a super creative song. I don't have a ton to say other than this is root Switchfoot and their cores are on display here.
6. Fading West - I feel this is their most misunderstood record. The struggle this album went through is tremendous. Take the two best things Switchfoot is known for and strip them away and they still make a record worth listening too imo. It's not their best but it's really ambitious, even if accidental. Originally, they were going to only strip the guitars away but when you listen to the story of Fading West, going on a journey to feel inspired. There are plenty of lines hinting that Jon was having writer's block (blood clot pen). It does mean the lyrics suffered some here but I don't think they suffered a ton. They achieved the california surf music. However, I do think they missed a huge part that I feel the fans were wanting. It's the sound that's on the ep. It's the one we were advertised and didn't receive on the album. I would loved if the album had the sound of Edge of the Earth (the song). But I really appreciate the risk cause it's a huge one. (stand out tracks: Love Alone Is Worth the Fight, BA55, Slipping Away).
5. Vice Verses - This was the best they have ever been as musicians (you could argue this for Oh Gravity too tho). But the amount of pushing their musical talent is very apparent on this album. The bass lines and drum rhythms are amazing. The only songs I'm kinda eh about are Rise Above It (still has great production and energy) and The Original (still has amazing bass and guitar parts). This album does have a weird issue with the lyrics either hitting really deep parts of your heart or being a very vague or simple line. The production is also the best imo and everything is layered super well. The only production that I disagree on is on Where I Belong (the digital claps for why and some parts sounding a little inconsistent with the rest of the album). But the choices in the sounds of the guitars and genre jumps and the grunge. Still lacking in some areas but still a solid record. (Holds my favorite Switchfoot song Thrive)
4. Oh! Gravity. - Oh yes, the golden era as I call it. I pin this album as the core Switchfoot sound. If you want to hear what Switchfoot sounds like, this album nails it. Guitars, fun, great lyrics, and musical variety. I don't have much words like I did for Chin. It's a pretty simple album to digest and it's the quickest made one (from what i'm aware of) and it shows but in the best way possible. It's also only made better by the podcast series they made. The only things that hold this album down a bit is American Dream and Burn Out Bright being repeat tracks of another (American Dream being the better one) and the double edged sword of it being simple when surrounded by high effort long works that are beyond exceptional.
3. The Beautiful Letdown - The Classic Foot album that defined their careers. It's not a joke tho that everything went up a whole level with this album. Something clicked in Jon's head that turned out some of his best lyrics and the song formats and sound just grew a ton. Jerome being an essential new member. And only one song that's a little meh (Redemption) and even the meh song is still catchy. Overexposure might be why it's not higher but I feel I have more reasons being that it does sound dated. Most of the time for better but a little for worse. I also feel that if Drew was a part of this album, it would be up a another level also. There's just a slight amount of incompleteness to this record. Not sure exactly but regardless the songwriting on this album is amazing and the questions and the way they are asked remain timeless.
2. Nothing is Sound - Grunge at its best here. I'm still not certain what Jon was going through here other than what the lyrics mention but whatever he was feeling hits hard. It resonates so much. To this day, these songs hold my throat. Not a bad song on here. It's a really good album that only gets beat by it's production value. Some songs could've been produced better (ironically Jon mentioned that recently too lol). Golden, The Setting Sun, and We Are Young Tonight are the forefront of those. And it's not like they are terribly produced but they are missing a little from what they could be. But literally it. Front to back, this record just rocks while wallowing in despair from the fallen world and the loneliness and helplessness it brings. It also represents a huge decision on what to do after a breakout record and is one of the best records after a band reached public success.
1. Hello Hurricane - The whole sound of this record is the most complete the band has ever sounded to me. The writing on this album is so great. Not one song is a waste and process this album went through is amazing. I get that they can't (prob shouldn't) do this process but damn was it worth it. This project sounds so complete and so organically made, even with two songs that I feel could have been switched out. (Always isn't my favorite but I may having it be a song for a past relationship. But it also does still have a lot of raw emotion in it that I appreciate and can get past my own perceptions. It's the lesser of the offense. Free is the other one only cause it kinda is booty in studio. It's live version makes ya wish it was that way on the record). But i adore these lyrics and I love the sounds they used without washing it up with production but still using production (Sing it Out) as a tool. It's so good and I love this album so much
quick review of interrobang is that it’s a very solid record and I love the sound of it so far. It doesn’t take my top record but it’s an insanely catchy album with a lot of listens in the future. I’d probably rank it as 2 or 3. Not sure if it’s above or below nothing is sound. but really give it a listen. It’s exactly what i’ve been wanting from the band for so long

A Biography Within a Eulogy
I have been kicking around ideas for a blog for a while now. I suddenly had the inspiration to write today from a muse that is no stranger to me but may seem a bit macabre to others.
This morning I heard about the passing of Richard Trumka. Trumka was the president of the AFL-CIO for the last 12 years. He was secretary-Treasurer for the 15 years before that. The 13 years before that he was president of the United Mine Workers. His father was a coal miner with a Union job that put him through college. He worked in the mines as a young man as well. These are the same Mine workers who are in the middle of a 5-month strike in Alabama as I write this.
I had the honor of hearing him speak multiple times and I met him on one occasion. The day I met him changed my life. Here is where the introduction to me comes in.
My father was a Master-at Arms in the Navy, and my mother was a telephone operator for Pacific Bell. As a child in the 80′s I watched as our nation went through this extravagant decadent period of economic prosperity (for the wealthy). Meanwhile, I was the kid with the Payless buy one get one for a penny shoe, and the chip on my shoulder about being in what should have been a middle class working family that couldn’t quite make ends meet enough for my brother and I to participate in some of the extracurricular activities of our peers. My brother was teased about the pink banana seat bike we inherited from somewhere as the other kids rode new BMX racing bikes.
I didn’t do well in school despite being tagged as a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) student. My grades suffered and I was sent to live with my uncle who was a teacher in the L.A. area. It was here that I encountered more diversity than I had ever experienced before. My openly gay uncle and I stayed in Long Beach in an apartment about 2 blocks from Martin Luther King Blvd. (If you know you know). I went to school in a predominately Chicano neighborhood near where he taught in Whittier.
It was during this time I also learned about racism and police brutality. Even before Rodney King was beaten by four officers over 50 times, I had run-ins with the Whittier Police and LAPD. The most memorable impression was an incident where my friends and I were out skateboarding after curfew. We were pulled over and placed spread eagle on a wall. I was the only white kid in the bunch. An officer walked over to me and said, “It’s late. Go on home.” He was taken aback when I told him I was staying with one of my Latino friends and I couldn’t go without him. They patted everyone down and released us. But I could feel the malice towards my friends.
It was also around this time that I got into alternative, punk, and hip hop. I was raised on Country and Western, R&B, Metal, Big Band, Surf Rock, Pop, and Hard Rock. Music is and was a gateway to all kinds of different worlds for me. I never learned to play an instrument. However, music played a huge role in my career path. More on that later.
The rebel DIY attitude and Gen X grunge nihilism did no favors to my grades or my future as a model citizen for that matter. I made dumb kid mistakes and did dumb kid things that I won’t go into detail about here. Suffice to say, “easy money” for a teenager in LA County in the 90′s came with a lot of strings attached. Despite being a white kid raised in suburban San Diego County, I molded myself to fit my environment. I wouldn’t give any of it back for all the money in the world. In the “hood” I learned about friendship, community, loyalty, and respect. I also unfortunately became a Raiders fan and a Dodgers fan, where I learned more about those values along with disappointment and defeat.
High School brought me back to North San Diego County. My grandparents didn’t want me attending the school in the neighborhood my parents and I lived because there was “gang problems” there(translation: Hispanic and Pacific Islander students). So, I went to Carlsbad High School, where not only was I not a minority, but I am pretty sure the minority population percentage was in the low 30s. This is where I got to lean into being a weird punk rock, goth kid and enroll in Drama. My grades never recovered, and I dropped out in my Senior Year.
I had been doing technical production for Drama and found a passion for the arts that didn’t involve me being front and center and allowed me to play a supporting role in a small community of nerds on campus (foreshadowing). This new passion led me to an internship at a theatre and eventually my first real Union job (I don’t count the 3 months I worked at a grocery store).
I became a pre-apprentice with IATSE Local 122. I was a professional stagehand. I experienced live music, theatre, comedy, drama, board meetings, tv shoots, conventions, arena tours, stadium tours, and so much more as I honed my craft. I was literally shining a light on some of the music I grew up listening to.
I was an apprentice when I met Richard Trumka. We had set up audio at the Convention Center for him to speak at a rally for one of the many labor battles we were fighting in San Diego at the time on behalf of hotel workers, grocery workers, teachers, or other workers in what had been a very conservative bastion of California.
Now, I have ADHD, so I don’t remember specifics. I do great with ideas though. President Trumka’s words inspired me to become more involved with my union than the transactional experiences I had to that point. I was already beginning to learn the value of the Camaraderie in a union thanks to a few wonderful mentors who frankly took on father figure roles in my life that had been absent or temporary until then. Richard Trumka and the AFL-CIO represented something new in the labor movement for me personally despite the long history behind it. I finally realized how much community matters and how the labor movement is centered on that community.
Since that day, I became a trustee of IATSE Local 122, and I returned to school at 36 years old to receive two AAs in Political Science, and in Social Science. I am now finishing up my B.A. in Political Science, minoring in Art and Media Technology. During the 2020 election cycle I was Assistant Campaign Manager for the first Asian American La Mesa City Council Member Jack Shu, as well as acting as volunteer coordinator for the first openly bisexual Black and Latino National City Council Member Marcus Bush. I am still a card-carrying Journeyman of IATSE Local 122, and I hope to be attending Law School next Fall. Everything that I have done has been in an effort to create the community that President Trumka painted for me that day.
Those who walk uprightly enter into peace.
RIP President Trumka.

Yugioh S4 Ep 27: Joey Punches Valon to Death and Seto Kaiba buys a Car.
My favorite character is back!
THE STORYBOARDER.
Like clockwork, the best storyboarder of all of Yugioh saw in the episode notes “This is the one where we shall Destroy Joey Wheeler” and he was like “Yes! this is extremely my thing!” and he’s back at it again, destroying Joey Wheeler with such finesse.
Like it’s so hard to explain in caps because you can’t see stuff move, but this animator is so good at the Yugioh vibe--he makes these character designs WORK for him (or her? No idea the identity of the mysterious storyboarder (or team of storyboarders--maybe this was one little group they freelance out to that worked really well together? I dunno) ) they really capture what Yugioh IS in a really unique way and still remain fairly economical in the animation sense. They do not hold back on any pose, and go completely ham into this ridiculous concept of a card game where you put on a special suit and punch eachother in the face.
Mind you, it’s still a card game and I skipped all that, but man...this is such a good storyboarder and I know that next episode they’ll be gone but for now I’m just gonna bask in it.
First off, Rebecca manages to figure out Seto’s 6-letter password in order to access billions of people’s personal data off of a satellite (we don’t get to find out what the password was) and although the storyboarder is great--they did make one fatal mistake.
Tumblr media
The bane of every Californian who leaves California. LA is like a completely different country to San Fransisco but everyone only knows of two Californian cities and assumes we’re right next door to each other.
And it’s like...no, man. I don’t have Disneyland. Do I sound like a cheerful person that lives next to Disneyland? Do I say “bruh” and smile with the force of 1000 suns as we surf the coast on the backs of Lisa Frank dolphins? No dude, I have a strong Bay Area accent that makes me sound like a dry sarcastic asshole and I wear sweatshirts to the freakin beach because it’s very cold and filled with great white sharks.
(Sorry I just had to delete like 10 k words where I compared the entire cast to US cities by saying cryptic stuff like Joey Wheeler : Seto Kaiba is like LA : San Fransisco and like it was the biggest random tangent that only makes sense to me. Quarantine brain, y’all, I got SERIOUS quarantine brain. Anyone else? Anyone else just find themselves wasting like 2 hours thinking of which cities match the personalities of different characters on a show that came out so long ago? Man I need distractions right now.)
But back to what’s happening on the show, Yami is coming to terms with Joey’s struggle about as well as Yami does.
Tumblr media
Which is mostly Yami saying “I’m pretty sure I killed Joey in that card game with Bakura in S1 and Tea had to bring him back from the graveyard so like wtv.”
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media
This was like 2003??? I think I keep forgetting when this season came out but we had printers at this point. We had google maps and a printer.
I don’t think I’ve touched a map like that since the 5th grade, where we had this competition to make a hypothetical road trip across America. It was Awful, and if you won the competition to get from SF to New York with the shortest distance, you would win something like pizza and a cool engraved name plate. We did not win pizza, because I could not even unfold this asshole map.
And now we have Google so like thanks, Mrs. Lambert, it was cool, but I’ll never use that information again. I hope. It was such a vivid frustrating memory that these maps still fill me with anxiety to this day, hearkening back to my 5th grade self just desperately trying to use string to measure how many miles the freeways across the midwest contain. (spoiler: a lot)
How OLD is this kid? Rebecca’s like secretly a 68 year old. She’s secretly Mrs. Lambert.
At this point we had a swell in the music as each friend of Joey joined in to announce their willingness to risk danger and save him.
Tumblr media
Were they...not going to join him the whole time? It just seemed like a weird thing to bring up sooo after the fact.
Yami then turned to Duke and was like “but not you. You stay here” and he was like “Oh, thank gods.”
Tumblr media
Rebecca stayed behind because the animators don’t want to draw her. Honestly, she’s incredibly helpful and they were mad stupid to leave the only smart one in the car. But youknow...this team loves being mad stupid. It makes the show more entertaining.
As they left we had a weird aside where Arthur Hawkins reflected “Rebecca is having just a REAL hard time trusting Yami” and it’s like--Arthur Hawkins! You’ve been dumping on Yami for like an entire season, that’s why. Like don’t pretend you’re all on team Pharaoh now. Why ever stop dunking?
But youknow, character development, Rebecca is going to learn the trust the ghost that possessed her crush/best friend that she’s had for 2+ years on a kid who’s been living in Japan this whole time who literally forgot who she was 2 weeks ago. You trust that ghost, Rebecca.
Or not. I mean you really don’t have to. You don’t owe Yami anything, dude. You don’t need to blindly trust idiot men, Rebecca. You just do you. Trust that instinct of “is this guy not trustworthy?” because yep. Chances are if you’re having that thought, that he’s totally not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Storyboarder!
Storyboarder what ARE you???
STORYBOARDER!
Tumblr media
after this followed a scene that I’ve seen gif-ed just so, so often that I assumed it was in a Yugioh Spin-off. I don’t know why I thought it wasn’t in this OG series, but I didn’t expect it to be here, in the Dartz season. But, it does make sense that this scene was under the best Storyboarder‘s direction because *chef’s kisses * it’s perfect. Every frame is a joy. The amount of sinister expressions on Mokuba, the level of sass coming off of Kaiba. It’s such a freakin shame that this man’s best work so far only lasts like a few seconds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PS my bro looked it up and this car salesman has a wikipedia page.
He also looked up if anyone has shipped this car salesman and it’s our lucky day because this ship does not exist with any human ever in the world. Thank you, humanity. But, they DID make a wikipedia page so maybe we’re just putting off the inevitable?
Tumblr media
I’m not even gonna cap it because I KNOW this is a gif you can easily download from everywhere but mm--this is a SOLID piece of animation. This animator is just flexing so hard, man. Yugioh did not deserve this much care and attention to detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shippers rejoice, Seto Kaiba did briefly consider helping out Joey (before he absolutely drove away in the opposite direction)
Tumblr media
(They’re clearly in the financial district already, PS. They are driving 5 ft to Dartz’ house.)
Tumblr media
At some point Joey nabbed Valon’s card and so now he also gets to wear a bunch of stupid armor outfits.
This one is weird! It’s very Kamen rider-ish...but it’s a color scheme that feels very valentines day. It looks hard to wear. Good thing it’s animated.
Tumblr media
I may need to capture this walk sequence though...if I still have the energy...the picture does not display his very energetic arms-in-the-air walk cycle I haven’t seen since that one Season zero episode. I dunno if it’s a reference to that, but I can’t think of any other reason why Tristan is walking like that.
Tumblr media
This is when Mai finally shows up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valon lost his helmet during this fight, which lead to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a good note to end on.
Anyways, I have no idea what my update schedule will look like or be, so if you’re new here and you want to start reading these from the beginning, I have a link for that:

(LOVIE SIMONE, 23, FEMALE, SHE/HER) ⮕ Hey, isn’t that [DOROTHEA “DOT” HARTLEY]? I heard that they were a part of the crew. According to the wiki it says they’re the [ACCOUNTANT] of the group. it snowed the day dot was born, her mother would say fondly as she reminisced of better times for the two. edna hartley always made it a point to say no matter what she was conceived out of love and for awhile, dot believed that. her parents met when her mother was touring europe and she fell for a charming french aspiring writer, louis, who said all of the right things. not long after their summer romance, edna found out she was pregnant and at first louis was thrilled. he proposed on the spot. edna had dreams of becoming a stage actress so the two flew out to a shoebox apartment in new york to start their little family.
except edna never got her big break and louis never even started the next great novel and the bills were piling up. they were getting money from edna’s family, but louis’s pride wouldn’t accept it any longer. he took two jobs while edna stayed home with baby dot.
she loved dot and dot herself never doubted it, but she was certainly not ready to be a mother. she was immature and treated her only daughter more like a best friend than her child. taking care of a child all day with no escape took a strain on edna and eventually took a strain on her marriage. what started as harsh whispers would soon turn into screaming matches that dot could hear through the thin walls. it was that way for years and dot looked at her parents differently. she had resentment for her father and the feeling was mutual, he blamed them for the fact he never achieved his dream. the older dot grew she soon was the one taking care of edna, who some days couldn’t even get out of bed.
dot comes home from school at fifteen to see her and edna’s bags packed. she says the two of them are going to california and dot goes with her without any hesitation. a new start was what they needed, they could look out for each other.
except it wasn’t. edna and dot both work odd jobs to make ends meet and when dot isn’t at school she’s accompanying her mother to auditions that she doesn’t get called back for. she scores a few commercials which is enough to keep them afloat for a brief amount of time. much of dot’s teen years are spent apartment hopping, couch surfing, and sleeping in motels throughout LA. if she was younger she might have been charmed by their vagabond lifestyle, but dot knew they couldn’t live that way forever.
if anything, dot learned a lot about how money worked when she was young. she always had a knack for numbers and after crunching the numbers to figure out if you could pay your electric bill for the month really gives you an advantage. she learned how to budget because no one else was going to.
she’s working a job doing data entry when she first hears of arcane inc. one of her coworkers wouldn’t stop talking about them. dot isn’t interested as she’s never though much about the supernatural, chalking up companies like arcane to exploit people’s fears. no thanks. her mother believed in spirits enough for the both of them. (besides if karma was real, she would’ve seen a check from louis for the book deal he got over a year ago).
dot does go down a rabbit hole though when she realizes just how big of a following aracane has. people will really believe anything. the moment she sees that they’re hiring, she sees it as an opportunity. a company with millions of followers has to give their employees a reasonable salary. she didn’t have any real work experience outside of her office job but she was damn good with numbers and she was already used to traveling.
she’s been at arcane inc. for about a year now and still doesn’t really get what all the hype is about but that doesn’t matter. dot makes enough to send money to edna and she’s even started to put money aside to go to college. dot’s never been one to dream big, look at what it did to her parents, so she’s planned out every step without reaching out too far for the stars.
headcanons.
yeah her mom’s a failed theater actress but dot has a really secret love for musicals. you won’t find her ever talking about it though and if anyone found out she’d kill them. not joking don’t text.
her social media presence is little to none. not that she thinks she’s above it but she’s just genuinely bad at keeping up and she doesn’t love being in front of a camera. (her instagram posts are all blurry with bad filters and weird angles, bless her heart).
she’s probably the most stubborn person you will ever meet. i blame it on her being an earth sign i’m just saying a ghost could be right in front of her and she’d go and?
dot’s a really good listener (years of practice) and will take secrets to the grave but she’s pretty bad at giving advice. she doesn’t really know what to do when someone starts crying except give them an awkward pat.
her intuition is pretty good though. she’s good at reading situations she just doesn’t know how to react sometimes.
tw abuse: so while her father was never physically abusive, there was an incident from when she was twelve. he had been drinking and dot got out of bed to get water from the kitchen. he yells at her, as he often did, and throws an empty beer bottle at her. she threw up her arms to defend herself and there are still a few scars from the glass shards.
the way to her heart? anything peppermint which i know is arguably the worst dessert flavor but she can’t get enough of it.
tends to chew on things when she’s working. no pen cap is safe. she usually has candies on her so she has something to munch on.
connection ideas.
i prefer chemistry over anything else!! these are just some ideas to get the ball rolling. (also i am so bad at coming up with connections.)
friends. i mean....yeah jsfdkljfd. as basic as that is she just never had many of those growing up! dot’s kept a few people close but for the first time in her life she’s out of reach from her mother so it’s a good chance to socialize.
more specifically? a best friend. in the same vein but dot would really put this person above everyone else. she’s really loyal and it’d be nice to have such a close bond with someone.
a childhood friend or two too!! she’s moved around quite a bit but she stayed in new york (and she considers when she first moved to la still part of her childhood) for quite a bit, definitely long enough to make a connection!
someone she’s pulling out of trouble maybe. while dot’s not a maternal figure (leave that to the nurturer) she does have a compulsive need to help people out. it’s very frustrating but she can’t stop.
negative nancy. she can be so pessimistic and annoying so she’d appreciate having someone she could just vent to.
exes. it has to be a past relationship because dot is not a hook up person like AT ALL, but she’s human and she likes companionship (sometimes).
honestly whatever you can think of! cousins, pen pals, unrequited crush (either way), friend crush, enemies, people she avoids, shared interest buddies, good/bad influence!

hc: hawks in the diaspora
an au where hawks/keigo is in the diaspora, and he’s a SoCal boy to the T.
like can you imagine??
keigo works at the local airport (torrance, long beach, santa monica - i honestly don’t care), and after his shift, he goes to the beach and just surfs.
you cannot look me in the eye - the first time i saw hawks i was like “bro, he’s a surfer dude”
i wanna say he’s from torrance its not like i’m bias or anything or the fact that la weekly called torrance the 48th prefecture of japan but he’s from torrance
he’s a frequent flyer and is on the look out for the cheapest flights, literally waking up in the dead of dawn to book it out of town and into LAX (he likes long beach though - less people and all)
growing up, has to go out of torrance for schools to get “better” education. despite his hometown be torrance, his zipcode says otherwise.
he was made fun of in his younger school years for what he eats and how he looks or the fact that english was his second language, so he just learned not wear his emotions on his sleeves, and he didn’t appreciate his culture and where he was born until much later in his life.
he is SUCH a model student, everyone hates him. he’s like the teacher’s pet. he does this, because he first saw what its like to not have education or a clean record, so he’s doing everything not to tarnish his records. he is only 8 years old.
that being said, he may be a teacher’s pet, but it doesn’t mean he likes his teachers. he doesn’t snitch. and that earns his peers’ trusts.
despite being a model student, there are teachers who yell at the entire class that by the time they’re in highschool or college years, they’d all be in jail.
at the end of that class, he tries to console his classmates that the teacher is being an ass as always, that they’re not right, and that they should all prank said teacher.
but in the back of his mind, he hopes that his fears or the teacher’s words won’t actually come true
so he works DOUBLE HARD to get out of town
he graduated elementary and middle school with high honors and got into a prestigious highschool with a scholarship!
lmao, this is where he meets dabi
after school, keigo would take the bus and go to the local library. there, he gets to the top floor and reads manga all day long. he tries to hide this, because he doesn’t wanna be outted as an otaku
he spends a lot of time in the library, because its quiet and he can drop his mask
he didn’t like much boba, but one of his group mates for a class project gave him one, and though it took a while to get used to it, he found his favorite drink - okinawa tea - and he fell in love
in high school people don’t really question or make fun of his background much
he had to say though, most of his honors classes were white. it was the first time that he was in a room full of white people, and it made his tan skin stand out from his white button down uniform. it made him feel uncomfortable and he didn’t know why.
he avoids his most of his group mates in honors because they carried weed and it wasn’t legalized yet in california. he heard what happened to one student - also a dark-skinned Asian - who was suspended because he was near a bunch of white kids with weed. yeah, no - he wasn’t taking any chances.
he doesn’t avoid one group mate, though, who’s a year up from him, and the one who introduced boba to him - rumi
rumi is like the captain of the volleyball team and drumline, and after school she volunteers in the local hospital and taekwondo dojang.
keigo was like “rumi, if you’re not accepted into standford or some shit, the education system is rigged”
(lo and behold, standford and ucla didn’t accept rumi because she was Asian and it was a good thing she didn’t get in because a year later, the whole Yale scandal broke out, and anyways the tuition is expensive too)
rumi lives like down the street from hawks. rumi is more towards the coast while keigo is more inland.
rumi’s apartment is HUGE and shiny and expensive as fuck. it came to a surprise to keigo that rumi didn’t have to hear the train passing through, helicopters hoovering to capture a crash by the 110, or gangbangers hot on torrance blvd every other night
it kind of made keigo sad that he can’t exactly share everything with rumi, because she might be freaked out
keigo doesn’t invite rumi over. he mostly wants to go to the nicer part of town.
that being said, they both go to mitsuwa and its thanks to rumi that keigo is able to better appreciate his heritage
he forgot how to speak japanese, even hakata-ben, but he passes both spanish and latin classes back in school.
rumi’s like, “who the fuck uses latin??” hawks just proceeds to keep his mouth shut because he’s been told it’ll help in medical school and hawks like to aim high
keigo can converse in multiple languages, especially greetings, because he lives in an area where there’s a lot of languages spoken on the daily basis, and its always respectful to learn greetings (better service too, and keigo loves food)
STREET FOOD EVERYWHERE
you know this bitch knows the best hole in the wall and food trucks around the area
his reintroduction to japanese food once again is with rumi and through hawaiian food, especially those that serve hawaiian-japanese fusions
keigo is a definite food junkie hands down; most of his money is spent on food, and he blogs so he can income from being a junkie
after getting hawaiian from the crossroads, he likes to take rumi to the nearby local airport and watch airplanes land and take off
“you better not be trying to be romantic or else i’ll -”
“you’ll kick my balls, i know, i know -“
SKSKSKSKS RUMI TAKES HAWKS TO THE GYM; hawks gets his butt absolutely annihilated, but he also starts to learn how to defend himself
omfg this is kind of a rant, all over the place, and i’ll make a part ii or something later on, but this is what i’ve been thinking the past few days

Sunkissed - Dad!Michael AU
A/N: I apologize in advance for this piece of crap. Literally wrote this in two hours while sleep deprived and had a random spark of inspiration.
Michael was awakened by someone determinedly trying to force his eyelids open. He finally gave in and opened his eyes to the excited face of his daughter. Once she saw that he was awake she bounced up and down on his bare torso, earning a few uncomfortable grunts in response.
“Wake up daddy! Wake up, wake up, wake up!” she persisted.
Michael sighed but he was soon all smiles. Nothing could brighten his mood like his little angel. He noticed she was wearing her swimsuit and sat up confused.
“Why are you wearing your bathing suit, angel?”
“Because it's hot outside and I wanna go to the beach!” she said, throwing her arms in the air.
Michael sighed, stretching, before standing and going out on the balcony. His little angel was right, it was a sunny, hot day in California and there wasn’t a cloud in sight; it was perfect for a day at the beach. But Michael was a busy man. He was always caught up with work and hardly ever had days off. But today would be an exception. He knew his little girl was often missing him when he would pick her up late at night after work from Ms. Mead and the woman would scold him for not spending enough time with her.
“Okay. We’ll go to the beach. It’s Saturday and I know daddy is always working. Today will be our day.” he says, smiling, picking her up and holding her against his hip.
“Yay! Thank you, daddy!” the child says, wrapping her small arms around her father’s neck and pressing her tiny cheek against his.
It only took about thirty minutes for Michael to pack all the necessary items they needed for the beach. He packed lunch for them to eat once they were all tired and hungry from being in the heat and a bunch of various beach toys for y/d/n to play with.
“Can we take the surfboard, daddy?” y/d/n asked.
She had somehow managed to dig it out of their ‘clutter closet’. Michael bought the surfboard as a souvenir years ago during his Hawthorne days when he tagged along with some classmates to downtown Los Angeles. He never put it to any use, it would sit in the corner of his room as a decoration and over the years it became nothing more than just something he tossed in the closet. Now his little girl could make memories with it.
“Sure, why not. It’s never been used.”
Y/d/n squealed in delight as Michael took the surfboard and tied it to the top of the car.
Once the car was packed with all their things, they were on the road. It was only a twenty minute drive to get to the beach. The parking lot was nearly full but luckily Michael found a spot after driving around aimlessly for five minutes.
It was a hassle carrying everything out to the sand but Michael managed. The second he set everything down and hunched over to catch his breath, y/d/n was running off to get in the water but Michael stopped her using his telekinesis discreetly.
“I want to get in the ocean!” y/d/n exclaimed as Michael led her by her hand back to their spot.
“I know but you need sunblock. Do you want to get sunburned?” Michael asked her as he began to lather the white substance on all exposed areas of her skin.
“No,” she said.
She stood still just long enough for Michael to finish and then proceeded to take the bottle from him and squeeze a large amount into her hand.
“Now it’s your turn, daddy.” the child said.
“Do you want to get sunburned?” she asked, repeating the same question he had asked her only minutes before.
Michael only smiled.
“No,”
He removed his black t-shirt so his persistent child could smear a more than necessary amount of sunblock all over his back. Personally, Michael was not a beach person. He hated wearing minimal clothing and staying out in the heat for long periods of time. Bad enough he already ran at an abnormal body temperature. But if being at the beach meant he could spend time with his daughter then he was all for it. As long as she was happy he was fine with pretty much anything.
After y/d/n was finished covering Michael’s body with sunblock she took him by the hand and started to lead him towards the water.
“Come on, daddy! It’s too hot and I wanna get in the water!”
“Okay okay, I’m coming.”
When they reached the water, y/d/n practically dived in, the water sloshing over her body and splashing her in the face. She laughed excitedly at the feeling and continued splashing around. Michael stood back just far enough so the water only barely touched his feet. Y/d/n had stopped splashing to look at him before running over to him.
“Why don’t you get in the water, daddy? It’s not that cold, see?” she hopped around to show him.
Michael shook his head,
“Nah, it’s okay. Don’t worry about me. You have fun,”
But she wasn’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer.
“Are you scared of the water? Come on, I’ll hold your hand so you won’t be scared.”
Y/d/n grabbed her stubborn father by the hand and let him into the water. Michael knew there was no arguing with her now. She led him into the ocean as far as she could until the water grew too strong for her. Michael picked her up and sat her on his shoulders.
“I wanna go out there, daddy!” she pointed out to the deeper part of the ocean where some older children and adults were swimming and surfing.
“Can I we ride the surfboard now, daddy?”
“Sure,”
They were so far out in the water that there was no way in hell Michael was walking all the way back to their area on the sand. So, he did what any normal dad would do. He used his powers to conjure the surfboard. He closed his eyes and willed the surfboard to appear. Once he heard a faint splash next to them he opened his eyes to see the white and blue surfboard sitting on the water.
“Wow, daddy, I wish I had magic like you,” y/d/n said in awe at the surfboard suddenly appearing out of thin air.
It was true, y/d/n didn’t have any powers. Either she would acquire them as she got older but for now she seemed to be normal. After all, her father was the Antichrist and her mother was a powerful witch, she would at least have some magic in her if not a great amount that she would obtain in her future.
Michael had absolutely no idea on how to surf.
He watched others around them surfing like professionals and some seemed just as lost as him. Not even magic could help him figure this out. If only he had an instruction manual of some sort to show him.
Y/d/n was growing impatient as she sat silently on the surfboard.
“I think we have to be on the sand first, daddy.” she said, watching as the woman ties the ankle piece around her ankle and walk into the water before laying on her board stomach first and wading out into the water.
“Maybe you’re right….” Michael agreed, but still very confused.
Back on the sand, Michael repeats the same process as the woman he took secret guidance from earlier and soon he and y/d/n were struggling to balance on the board. The waves were picking up and it only complicated things. Michael grew frustrated and resulted to using magic to steady the board. When they were steady, Michael tried to ride the small waves that rippled across them.
They continued this until y/d/n shouted,
“Daddy, look! A big wave is coming!”
Michael turned his head, and sure enough a massive wave was heading their way. A few surfers were riding it but Michael and y/d/n were only just learning to stand up without falling. Michael held y/d/n close to him as the wave crashed over them, causing them to get knocked underwater. Michael brought them both back up and y/d/n was crying.
“Wasn’t that fun? Hey hey, what’s the matter?”
“My eyes burn, daddy!” she cried, rubbing her eyes.
“Shh it's okay,”
Michael covered her eyes with his large hand, using his magic to stop them from burning. She stopped crying almost immediately and clung to him tightly.
“I wanna go back to our spot now,” she whimpered, still clearly not over the ocean hurting her.
“Okay. We can eat our lunch and you can play with your toys in the sand, okay?” she nodded and laid her head on his shoulder.
~
Sitting on the towel within the shade of their large umbrella, Michael and y/d/n ate their homemade turkey and cheese sandwiches and drank their Caprisuns in silence.
When they were done, y/d/n was ready to play some more. But poor Michael was so tired so he took out all of her beach toys and watched her play in the sand for a while. She found tons of seashells and filled her bucket to the brim with them. Then she attempted to build a sandcastle but became discouraged when the sand kept sinking back into the ground.
“Stupid sand!” she grunted angrily, kicking the sand with her little feet.
Michael found this so amusing for some reason and burst into laughter at the sight of his daughter getting angry with sand. When y/d/n saw him laughing at her, she only grew more angry and stood with her arms crossed and a scowl on her face.
Michael only laughed even harder.
After another hour, Michael noticed that many people were beginning to pack up and leave. The sun was starting to set slowly and it would be y/d/n’s bedtime soon. Michael began putting everything away while y/d/n stood in the tide. He called her over when he finished packing and told her it was time to go home.
She was not happy to leave, to say that much. But the second the car was packed and they were driving home, she was fast asleep in her carseat. Michael had to carry her inside and wake her up so she could have a bath and eat dinner. He fixed them both mac & cheese and they both ate while watching Moana, courtesy of Michael letting y/d/n pick the movie.
However, she fell asleep before the movie could finish and Michael carried her to bed and gently tucked her in. He placed a kiss on her forehead and whispered goodnight.
Michael called Ms.Mead right before he went to bed to tell her about their day. She was proud of Michael for doing the right thing and spending some much needed time with his daughter. Michael promised that from now on every Saturday would be daddy-daughter day for himself and y/d/n.
Michael went to bed that night feeling happier than ever.
A/N: Okay soooo this ended up being a lot longer than anticipated but I wrote this at 2am randomly and it just started pouring out of me. It probably has hella mistakes but whatever. I’m sleep deprived and wanted to write something so this was the result lmao

Text
In the early 1970s, the Acosta family immigrated from Puerto Rico to the Miami area of Florida where they owned and operated a real estate business. It was also in Miami that Manny Acosta, the eldest Acosta son, met his bride, Amy Wilson. A lifelong South Beach resident. The moment their eyes locked, they swore, it was true love. Together they had two children. First a son, whom they named Michael, and then a daughter; Alycia. Alycia Acosta, nicknamed Aly by her father, grew up loved. The apple of her father’s eye, her big brother’s best friend, and the darling daughter her mother had always wanted. She had no reason to ever leave Miami. A loving family. A rich, cultural heritage. All the shopping a girl could ever do, and the most gorgeous beaches in the whole world. On which, she spent most of her youth.
Learning to surf started out as a hobby for Alycia. Just a way for her to spend time with her older brother, Michael, but quickly she became very good. The winter of her freshman year Aly qualified for a national surfing competition that would take place in summer of the following year. An amazing opportunity for someone so young that would take her all the way to Hawaii, but by Spring the budding teen would never touch a board again. She’d fallen in love with the waves alongside her brother. When he was taken from her, so was her passion for the sport. Michael’s passing was a horrific tragedy. While he was working as a bouncer outside a club in South Beach a drive by shooting occurred. Police deduced the gunman was after a rival gang affiliate, and that Michael was just a random bystander caught in the crossfires. The Acostas lost not one but two children that night.
The grief of losing her brother soured Miami for Alycia. She couldn’t stand the sight of the ocean. Everything about her once beloved home made her sick. She couldn’t get out fast enough. Upon her high school graduation she left the state entirely for college in the West. Nevada was far from life in Florida, but it was what she needed to grieve. She lost herself in the college experience. Rushing a sorority, dating men as well as women, and of course a little bit of academics. Aly majored in business. Her family had instilled a knack for it in her. With a head for numbers, too, she ended up in accounting with plans to take the Certified Accountant Exam upon graduation. It was a solid life goal, but for all her planning Aly was still impulsive. A birthday weekend in Vegas and a few too many later she married a perfect stranger. Not that she had any real recollection of it the next morning with the worst hangover over of her life and a flight to catch.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Accounting Alycia’s family begged her to come home. Her parents even offered her a position in their real-estate office, but she didn’t want to move back to Miami. Even years later her grief was suffocating. Being back there just made it worse, but where did she go? No place felt like home, not that she thought it would without her brother. So, she acted on impulse and followed a girlfriend to Chicago. It didn’t work out between them, but Aly found a job that paid for her MBA. She was doing well in her career, building a solid reputation for herself in the industry, but it was hard for Alycia to stay in one place. The desire to be her own boss so she could satiate her wanderlust seemed like a far off dream. Even in her success she was years away from being able to afford such a thing. Ironically, another loss gave her the chance.
Abuela Acosta passed at the beautifully ripe old age of ninety-three, asleep in her bed beneath the roof of a literal mansion. As her only granddaughter Alycia was left quite the inheritance check, which would supply her the resources to live out her dreams and much, much more. There was just one, little, quite easily forgettable snag… Alycia Acosta was married. To a man whose name she could barely remember, no less. Without a prenup all that money, legally, wasn’t just hers. She needed a divorce, but where in the world was her estranged husband? Catalina, California. A gorgeous island a short ferry ride West of Los Angeles. How hard could a divorce to a man she doesn’t even know be? With a good lawyer? She’d spend one week – two tops – in Catalina before settling everything and going on her way, but what Aly doesn’t expect to happen may be everything she’s been searching for. A place that feels like home.

( britt robertson + 24 + muse 44 ) isn’t that BAY DELTA over there? i heard SHE joined FACTION THREE after she got back to west ham. it’s funny, ‘cause she was only on the service trip because HER BROTHER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN TO GO TOGETHER. hopefully she’ll fit in there – she’s ADVENTUROUS, but also IMPULSIVE. oh, i’m sure she’ll be fine.
guess who’s back, back again -- rach is back, tell a friend!
hi y’all! i’m here to introduce my trash daughter -- bay is a beloved child of mine who has gone through the wringer but also will not hesitate to put others through the wringer. you can read bay’s bio (which may or may not be longer than peyton’s) here and you can also see the BONUS bio for her service dog lucky here. or if you don’t feel like reading those (let’s be real, who reads anymore???) there’s a play-by-play under the cut! i am still just as much a sucker for plotting, please come talk to me, i love you all so much.
CONTENT WARNING: Paternal Abandonment, Paternal Death (this intro goes into more detail than her bio, more specific warnings under the cut), Amputation Details
So if Peyton belongs to the “looks like and is a cinammon roll” squad, Bay Alexandra Delta most definitely belongs to the “looks like she can kill you and also probably can kill you” squad.
Her initials literally spell “BAD”, like, if that’s not a sign idk what is
This human bean is a firecracker in a 5′3″ frame; she’s got some rough skeletons in her closet, but she tries to go with the flow of things and just live her best life and I high-key admire her for that
Bay was born in San Clemente, California to Mackenzie (Mack) & Brady Delta
Mack worked for the city as an engineer, she was very book smart but very particular & required calm & order to thrive
Brady was the head of the city’s Marine Safety department, he was the kind of person who thrived in social situations, who may not have been as book smart as Mack but damn did he know a lot about the world
Bay was the fix-it baby who didn’t fix-it!!
Mack was out the door less than a year after Bay was born, leaving Brady to take care of their daughter himself
And like, take care of her he did. He made a promise to himself when Mack left that he would do everything he could do make sure that Mack’s absence wouldn’t prevent Bay from having a great childhood
And believe me when I say that Bay really did have a great childhood.
She and Brady lived in an apartment right on the beach; Bay spent the first six years of her life with sand between her toes and an ever-present smell of sea breeze
Bay inherited her mother’s intelligence but her father’s soul; she was a people person, first and foremost, and talked to everyone and anyone who would talk to her & thrived off of the human connection
She picked up surfing & skateboarding at a very young age, & spent a large amount of time outside -- I mean, when you live in San Clemente, why wouldn’t you??
Brady was very present in Bay’s early childhood, save one weekend a month where he’d drop Bay off with family friends
Bay never asked where he went but I bet y’all can connect those dots (if you need help connecting them, though, no judgement -- lemme know)
The last weekend trip he took, though, was right before Bay turned seven, and Brady came back with a little surprise
This surprise is better known as Sammy “Squirt” Delta, Bay’s half-sibling
Sammy was the missing piece Bay didn’t realize they needed; the family of two became three and for a long time, everything was really really good.
Bay and Sammy went to public school in San Clemente
Bay’s never been afraid to stand up for what’s right, nor is she afraid to use harsh words (or fast fists) to convince others of what’s right -- which meant there were definitely some calls home during school
Bay was an excellent student, though, which probably saved her from getting into as much trouble as she should’ve as a kid
Bay’s also always been an avid reader, and was also the kid who could be found in the morning with a flashlight in her hand and a book on her chest. Squinting at pages in the dark was not good to her eyesight, though, and she got her first pair of glasses at age nine. For a while, she didn’t mind them, but by the time she started high school she was practically begging her dad to buy her contacts, and its rare to find her glasses now (although, we’ll see how long that contacts supply lasts her)
BEGINNING OF POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING CONTENT AHEAD FOR PATERNAL DEATH
Less than a week before Bay’s eighteenth birthday, she & her dad were life guarding a summer kickoff party at a beachfront mansion when one of the glass panels on the side of the pool started to splinter
Both Bay & Brady tried to help party goers out of the pool as fast as possible, but a man who was considerably stronger than Bay pulled her in accidentally and she didn’t make it back out of the pool before the glass split and the current of the water starting pulling her towards it
Bay ended up with numerous shards of glass in the bottom half of her left leg
Brady successfully managed to grab his daughter before she felt over the roof’s edge but, by doing so, sealed his own fate
He passed away eight hours later.
Bay arrived at the hospital with hypothermia and a very damaged leg; although at first it seemed the doctors might be able save it, Bay received a transfemoral (i.e., above the knee) amputation due to an infection her body was unable to shake
She spent 20 days total in the hospital and a year afterwards in a combination of rehab and physical therapy
Bay was also named Sammy’s legal guardian, and she and Sammy were the sole beneficiaries in Brady’s will
Bay and Sammy sold the majority of what they inherited, including their beachfront apartment
Through Brady’s will, Bay and Sammy also learned that their father was originally from a small college town in Kansas, and that he was the owner of his family’s home there
When Bay was cleared by her physical therapist (shout-out to Tony!), she decided it was in their best interest to move away from California and head to West Ham
END OF POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING CONTENT FOR PATERNAL DEATH
The Delta siblings have been in West Ham for almost five years now
(Edited because I realized I never put this in) Five years is a long time and even though Bay really does miss her dad, she’s gotten used to her new normal and (for the most part) doesn’t dwell on her past
Sammy goes to school at WHU though it’s unclear what he’s going to school for (if someone ever picks him up as a connection that can totally be decided by them)
Bay got a job at the library soon after they moved and has been rocking that since. She’s taken a few classes at WHU but is taking her time with school, she’s not really worried about finishing on any kind of schedule
Bay has a three-year-old golden retriever service dog named Lucky
Sammy gave Lucky to Bay as her 21st birthday present; he wasn’t originally going to be a service dog but when the Delta siblings noticed some of his innate habits and reactions to Bay it just all made sense
When he’s off-duty, he is such a lovable goofball and he loves to be pet and cuddled and to play
When he’s on, he helps Bay deal with both physical and emotional hardships
Lucky really means the world to Bay, as does Sammy
Bay really went on the service trip for Sammy, because he wanted them to go together
It’s interesting because, in terms of post-service trip status, Bay’s life really hasn’t changed all that much?? She still has both her boys, though I think when Factions come into play, she and Sammy might split -- my guess would be that Sammy would go with the Greek Life kids
But, yeah! Bay’s really just taking things as they come, and she’s excited to be here, and I’m excited she’s here.
EDIT I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING SOMETHING -- PLEASE DON’T FUCKING CALL HER BAYLEY IF YOU DO THAT SHE WILL MOST DEFINITELY FLIP HER SHIT KAYCOOLBYE <3
Wanted Connections include: SAMMY (apparently i like making muses with sibling connections??), crushes/ex-crushes/hookups/ex-hookups (Bay is bisexual; she will love all the human beans if you let her), friends or not-so-friends, people she knows through her brother, someone who showed her around town when she and Sammy got to west ham for the first time five years ago? Or maybe a book buddy -- like, someone who was a frequent flier at the library & who she could’ve recommended books to?? Also someone who loves Bay’s dog at first sight but doesn’t really like Bay?? But suffers through seeing Bay anyway because they’re a package deal lmao. Or vice versa, gimme someone who doesn’t love dogs but warms up to Lucky the more time they spend with Bay. Also also definitely partners in mischief, particularly someone who’s gonna want to check out the amusement park because that’s right up Bay’s fucking ally. This is...a long list to start with, but let me know if you’re interested in any of them, or anything else!

‘Real eyes...Real Lies:’ The Bachelor Hometowns Recap
Hi, this delayed blog post has big “walking into class 30 minutes late with my Starbucks giving zero fcks” energy.
Aside from night one, the hometown date is my favorite episode to watch each season. I like seeing where these girls are from and how they grew up. Too bad all of them live in LA now and Tayshia and Cassie are actually from Southern California. The DIVERSITY!
Can we talk about Colton’s strange desire to ask every girl’s father permission to marry their daughter? Firstly, bold move, sir. Secondly, I don’t know if we’ve seen other guys on the show ask every father. Hell, Ben Higgins didn’t even ask Lauren Bushnell’s father for his permission and he knew he was picking her by week three.
But still, the episode had its entertaining parts.
Federicksburg, Virginia
Surprise, Miss North Carolina is actually from Virginia. And she also recently moved to LA, so go ahead and wrap your head around that. I’ve been to Raleigh twice five years ago. Can I be Miss North Carolina?
Caelynn is really from Federicksburg, suburb of Washington, D.C. The town is known for its colonial and Civil War history, according to Google.
Tumblr media
Smile, you’re on camera auditioning to be The Bachelorette.
The only endearing part of this date was Caelynn’s dad, John. Caelynn’s birth dad has never been in her life and John essentially became her dad at age four. Bless this man.
Seeing John love Caelynn like his own daughter just really warmed my heart, and showed that there’s some men out there with pure souls....I mean there’s not a lot of them....but John proves that *SOME* exist.
After meeting her parents, Caelynn revealed to Colton that she’s in love with him while simultaneously checking off one item on her “How to become The Bachelorette” checklist.
Things seem to be going perfectly to plan for Caelynn. Well, except for cursing like a pirate and calling Tayshia a “stupid b*tch” last episode. But Miss America First Runner Up doesn’t give up that quickly.
Birmingham, Alabama
“We’re in Birmingham, Alabama right now and I’m freaking out” - Hannah B.
Me too, Hannah. I’m not even literally there, but I’m still scared to see what the “South is all about.” Colton seemed concerned too.
Hannah took him to an “etiquette class” where he learned how to walk with a book balancing on his head and how to properly eat a roll.
As Colton attempted to eat the roll, the etiquette women stopped him with a “Bless your heart,” which in the south means “You f*cking moron, what are you doing?” In New York we say, “Are you deadass rich now?” (I don’t say this, but I imagine some do.)
The etiquette lady then showed Colton, and the world, how we’ve been eating rolls wrong our entire lives. Are you ready to be mind fcked?
How to eat a roll like a lady:
Tear off a teeny, tiny piece of bread
Butter the small piece and put it in your mouth
Repeat this process until there is no more bread
In theory, I feel like you would actually consume more butter this way, which isn’t good for a lady’s figure, but I digress.
Then we get to meet Hannah’s friends and family.
Hannah G. is 23 and and has four friends who are all married. If I were her, I’d move to Los Angeles too.
Upon meeting Hannah’s parents, I immediately realized I am obsessed with her mom. This woman never left the ‘90s and kind of looks like Allison Janney in “I, Tonya.” In short: she’s iconic.
Tumblr media
Those glasses are fire. I’m getting a similar pair soon.
Hannah seemed very convinced that she is going to get engaged to Colton. All we’ve really seen from Hannah on this show is that she doesn’t talk much and likes to make out with The Bachelor. I don’t doubt that she’s ready to get married, though. She is from Alabama after all.
I really like Hannah G. She is gorgeous but seems like she doesn’t let that affect her personality (I feel like a big part of Cassie’s personality is her looks), and seems like she would be friends with anyone, not just beautiful Instagram models. She truly deserves the best. Is “the best” Colton. Um....not sure. But if she wants him, girl go ahead.
Somewhere In Southern California (pt. 1)
Similar to “What came first? The chicken or the egg?” Do you think Tayshia is a thrill seeker or is she just pretending to be one for the show?
I mean the only thing that can top her and Colton’s bungee jumping date in Singapore is to go skydiving. It only makes sense. So guess what? They went skydiving.
Tumblr media
Poor Colton. I don’t think he’s even a fan of heights.
Tayshia warned Colton several times that her father is very “protective” of her. And, well, I expected more as he did give his blessing (after first saying “no,” but then changing his mind.) He seemed almost too reasonable. I was hoping for someone a little angrier. Someone like Matt Randolph.....
Somewhere In Southern California (pt. 2)
I’ve definitely said this before, but Cassie is the biggest Cali girl to ever be in this franchise. She lives in Huntington Beach and I doin’t expect her to ever leave. What’s it like to have no desire to leave your hometown? Can’t relate.
Cassie kept her “Cali girl” theme and took Colton surfing. For a former professional athlete, he wasn’t very athletic out in the water. He was much more impressive as a bench warmer in the NFL.
Upon entering Cassie’s home, we were greeted with several high-pitch squeals by about six blonde medically-enhanced women related to Cassie. Cassie’s dad seemed annoyed by how handsy Colton was with his daughter, who attended the BIBLE INSTITUTE of Los Angeles. I still can’t believe Cassie is that religious.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know him, but he seemed like a....guy” - Matt Randolph with the quote of the season.
So I think I’m obsessed with Cassie’s sister. I have a strong feeling that I’m not alone in this. She has an actor boyfriend and has done modeling/small acting roles in the past. She was very pretty on “Young Once,” but now she is just so gorgeous that it doesn’t seem human. Shout out to well-done botox and fillers.
Tumblr media
Colton was very transparent about his feelings for Cassie, and she was like “lol idk fam,” essentially giving him ZERO validation.
Anyway, nobody thinks Cassie is ready for marriage.
Other girls: Cassie isn’t ready.
Cassie’s family: Cassie isn’t ready
Colton: Are you ready?
Cassie, knowing she’s not ready: I’m ready and I’m really offended that you would think I’m not!
This seems like it will end well!
Rose Ceremony
Something interesting happened here. After Colton gave the first two roses to Tayshia and Hannah G, just Cassie and Caelynn remained. Once Cassie got the last rose, Caelynn looked to her and said “get engaged.”
This chick really thought she was competing to win another beauty pageant. I know there are mixed opinions on Caelynn, but I’m here to say she is one of the fakest contestants in recently memory. Her crying on the Women Tell All was incredibly fake and was a last-ditch attempt to become The Bachelorette. But the gag is her beauty queen enemy Hannah B. is now Bachelorette. And that folks, is how I know karma is real.
All I gotta say is Real eyes* realize Real lies**.
*Bachelor producers
**fake bitches when they see ‘em.
