Slade decides he's gonna do Dick a favor. He's gonna end this stupid war for Gotham or whatever deranged nonsense the Bat is up to now, and add it to the list of 'favors' Dick owes him. And he knows how to do it.
He's gonna act like the Bat himself put a hit out on the smartest bird, the first Robin's first acknowledged brother; he's going to pretend to gun for the bo-wielding Robin at the Batman's request.
He knows the man's slipping mentally, it's fairly obvious.
So he gets his resources together, lays a false trail, and starts "hunting" the third Robin. He leaves hints, clues, things like that. Brags to Nightwing that if Robin III is expendable to the Batman, then how long until he tries to take Nightwing out as well. He gets very, very close to taking out the little Robin once or twice; one time the newest, youngest Robin stopping him with a positively feral look.
It is, in a word...fun. High stakes tag, so to speak.
It doesn't take long before Batman is convinced he put a hit out on one of his own birds.

I think the part that's been sitting with me the most about the batman 138 panels is this panel of jason. i'm not an avid comic book reader for dc, nor am i reading the entirety of the gotham war arc (i read up to bruce getting home from being stuck in the time stream and since then have only seen the spoilers) so i don't know exactly what the relationship between jason and the bats was before this point but goddamn.
i can't imagine going through all this trauma beforehand with someone who is supposed to be a father figure to you, and finally being able to simmer the anger inside of you and start to open up to these people who you're supposed to call family. that you're trying to do better for them, and for yourself and then- this happens. back to square one. your life was ruled by anger and needing vengance, and now it's going to be ruled by an ever-present fear. a fear of fear.
i hope that whatever this is can be reversed in some way? i would hate to see jason's character reduced to something that feels like it basically wipes all his previous development away. i hate dc sometimes.

Wow, okay, I thought it was going to turn out that Zur was largely in control of Bruce's actions during Gotham War hence the whole Jason thing, but both Bruce and Zur confirmed Bruce's actions weren't Zur's doing.
DC cannot make him do something so incredibly unethical and then try to pass him off as this loving father who only wants what's best for Jason. I mean, sure, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Bruce obviously views what he did as an act of love, but if you play a card like that, you damn well better show the repercussions of it, which would be Jason cutting ties with Bruce completely and forever.
But nooo. You know what they made Jason do after all this? Offer Bruce emotional support after Selina "died." Get bent. They should've had Jason walk over to the pit looking distressed over Selina's fall, had Bruce try to put his hand on Jason's shoulder, and then had Jason smack Bruce's hand off with a, "Don't you ever touch me again you piece of shit."
Like fuck! Where's the lingering feeling of betrayal?! The lack of trust?! Don't give me this "you did a terrible thing to me, and I haven't had any time to process it, but I still care about you and love you, so I'm here for you" type of bullshit. Siiigh. I'm so tired.

There’s something so beautiful yet so chilling about this.
We’re so used to seeing Bruce lash out at Jason. It’s always the same thing between the two:
Bruce goes to stop Jason.
Jason throws a punch saying “he deserved to die”.
Bruce retaliates and beats Jason up saying “you don’t get to decide that. You’re no better than the criminals. Get out of my city.”
Jason says something along the lines of “This isn’t only your city. You had Alfred and money to support you growing up but some people (me) had nothing”
Jason ends up leaving feeling like a worthless piece of shit & continues to hate Batman (& associates), as Bruce continues his mission.
What we never get is them talking to each other. Yes they exchange words, but they never talk. It’s always punch first, talk later. (Rhato #25 my beloathed)
In this panel, Bruce kneels down to be eye to eye with Jason (so much different than when he normally talks down to him). He removes his mask to show Jason that this is Bruce and what he’s doing is focusing on Jason and not on the mission.
He explains what he’s doing and reassures Jason of that: “This isn’t punishment, Jason. I love you”.
Now on the other hand, this is really fucked up. Because Jason is so used to hearing about how he’s screwed up big time and how he’s gone off the rails. What he doesn’t expect is for Bruce to say ‘I love you’ twice, whilst Jason is so vulnerable.
Bruce could beat Jason up and he could send him to Arkham or Blackgate. But he chooses to give Jason a new life in a different city where he won’t have to face the harsh consequences of his actions. What Bruce is showing here is love. At least that’s how Jason should see it. Because his dad isn’t fighting him and isn’t locking him up for murdering people. “I love you Jason but you’re a murderer”.
Now obviously Bruce is not a loving father here since he literally poisoned his son. I just thought it was really interesting to see the juxtaposition between ‘Bruce acting/speaking so kind and endearingly to his clearly struggling son’, with the ‘harshness of his actions towards his son (drugging Jason with fear toxin)’. As well as comparing that to the Bruce we’re so used to seeing face off with Jason.
You see this panel and you feel for both of them. It looks heartwarming to see the way Bruce is talking to Jason. But then when you know what Bruce has done, you feel anger, hate, or simply just knowing this is wrong. There’s so much manipulation from Bruce, that this whole story arc just leaves you feeling conflicted.
I just think that this was quite well done from both the writing and the artwork

DCxDP: Dead guys stick together
(A Batman 138 fix-it)
After Bizarro becomes King of Hell he watches the mortal world and is distraught to find that his brother/best friend/sorta father-figure has been hurt very badly and is calling out for help.
Distraught, he goes to another lord of the netherworld who he's heard has access to a portal (and subjects a bit more compatible with the act of helping someone). He asks King Phantom would he please please help him protect his brother/friend, and if he does Bizarro will owe him a favor and leave his realm alone.
When the inferno had initially breached the Ghost Zone Danny had thought he was going to have to deal with f*cking Trigon again, but as it turns out that guy's been replaced and the new guy is pretty nice. After a brief cosmic battle and a clearing of misunderstandings, Danny agrees to Bizarro’s request.
While Gotham's vigilante civil war continues on its rooftops, Jason is in a cell. He is trembling, practically catatonic again, and losing his mind. He’s seeing the flaming figure of a knight on horseback appear from the shadowy far wall of his room, like some kind of fairytale nightmare version of Batman. It takes a while for Jason to realize he’s talking.
“... part of the treaty between the King of Ghosts and King of Demons, Jason Todd: Prince of Demons has been granted special status and is henceforth a protected and honorary citizen of the Infinite Realms.”
Nightmare-Bruce touches his flaming sword on Jason’s shoulder and the unearthly fire instantly engulfs him. Relief washes through Jason, and it’s so strong he nearly drops asleep.
Bruce is apologetic when everything’s over and he realizes the mistakes he’s made... but nothing really changes. (It is a relief to Bruce that no one died or was permanently injured, Jason's condition resolved itself somehow, and Bruce is normal now so really everything is fixed or at least it will be fixed.)
Just like when Jason first came back from the dead, Bruce's response makes him hurt deeper than the physical torture itself. Jason is the one who died but Bruce acts like the ghost. Singleminded, possessive, stuck in time and blind to it; bound to repeat the same cycles again and again. Jason is the ghost but he's died multiple times now, and maybe that's kind of like living and maybe that means he can move on.
Dani and Bizarro become friends, and she gets Danny's friend Tucker to somehow set up a working Wi-Fi connection in hell so they can all play games together. (He’s not going to question it. Everything about Amity Park is abnormal. They helped him and they’re good to Bizarro, that’s all that matters.)
Jason forges a fake identity for Dani. He might ask Babs to make a better one for her if she ever needs it but he doubts that's likely. He hasn’t had a living identity for years now after all, he’s an old hand at fake identities. Dani is delighted and starts attending school soon after.
Danny has good friends, and as far as Jason can tell plenty of reliable mentors in the ghost world. You wouldn’t think it, but Jason’s less worried about Danny in his role as a little godling than in his civilian life. He’s got too much on his plate- too much power yet not enough to actually resolve his real issues. Not enough to protect himself where he’s vulnerable.
The “Guys in White” that Danny likes to complain about are concerning. So is the fact that Danny’s lives with mad-scientist parents who are trying to hunt down his alternate identity. So is his ever grinding cold-war with the mayor of his town… And something else too that had been niggling at the back of Jason’s mind ever since he’d first gotten to talk to these kids.
One day Danny’s sister, Jazz asks to talk to him. He’s an adult she says. That’s true he replies. He’s capable of protecting himself and other people, she says. Well, he has the training and experience for it, he agrees. If things go wrong, would Jason let Danny or Dani stay with him- just until she becomes a legal adult? She asks. Jason’s... not the sort of person who should be taking kids in. Danny saved his life though. He won’t say no. He says of course.
Jason knew it. Everything about Amity Park is abnormal.
The town doesn’t technically exist- there are no maps that include it and even satellite imaging is corrupted where Danny describes his hometown is supposed to be. There are no references to it on the internet that couldn’t be referring to a totally different Amity Park elsewhere, and judging by the problems they occasionally had on gaming nights and the odd offhand remarks Danny and his friends sometimes made, it was looking extremely likely that all communications between Amity Park and the outside were being heavily censored. Before Jason knew it he had started a full-on investigation on the GIW, Mayor Vlad Masters, former Mayor Montez, and Axion Labs.
Hope and fear lodges itself in Danny’s chest. Jason’s an adult and he’s actually going to help.

If we're taking Bruce at his word here (and if we consider that "it's not me" to be Zur agreeing) essentially that means that everything Bruce has done thus far was his own choice. Attacking his kids, poisoning Jason, abandoning Damian, those were Bruce's decisions, not Zur's.
Bruce decided he knew best, and he has no remorse for how the people he apparently loves have suffered for it.

For fuck's sake, it's not enough for you to disrespect the Batfam characters I love to further your stupid fucking plot, now you're dragging Scandal into this trash fire? She's barely appeared in reboot and this is what you're giving me? Making her work for her father (that thing that she was definitively not about in preboot) because...who knows. I would say "you better have a good reason" but they won't. Something something filial obligation apparently. Fuck you.

I wanna talk about joker war and Jason Todd
So let’s talk
The whole joker war run there’s been a running theme of the future. It flips from Batman’s idealized unrecognizable utopia of a Gotham city and the joker’s view of it wanting to inherently return to violence and chaos and slip back to how it was before batman. Bruce’s future hinges on there being a Batman and joker’s hinges on batman being out of the picture. Joker during his showdown with Batman brings up several points about of Gotham is all perfect and sanitized and exactly how Bruce wants it to be is it even Gotham anymore? Or is it “metropolis with a few less aliens”? Both views are unrealistic and idealized as fuck. That’s about all the context you need to understand this next part
So. Intentionally or not, this arc creates a parallel between Jason and Gotham city
How?
Here look at this scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does any of this look familiar to you?
It should
Bc it’s eerily similar to Jason’s big confrontation with Batman when he first comes back to Gotham.
Only this time, batman isn’t being asked to choose between Jason or the joker. He’s being asked to choose between Gotham and the joker.
That’s where the parallel is. Recall the bit I mentioned in the context paragraph about Joker asking if the perfect version of Gotham is even Gotham anymore? You can say the same about Jason.
Bruce keeps beating the everloving shit out of Jason whenever he steps a toe out of line in the comics. He acts out? He gets his shit rocked. The thing is, like Gotham, Jason is wildly fucked up and that’s part of him. He’ll never be the perfect shining hero Bruce expects him to be just as Gotham will never be a perfect utopia
Both can always get better if you put in the work as seen by Gotham crime having gotten better with Bruce’s efforts and Jason has been shown many times to crave acceptance and family, Bruce just isn’t putting in the work, hasn’t been. Even when he first found out Jason was alive his response when speaking to Alfred about it was “this changes nothing”
Jason’s core is love and devotion. He wants to give and receive those two things. It’s why he reacts the way he does to anything he perceives as a betrayal and closes himself off so hard. Anger is a secondary emotion. To get angry about something you have to care in the first place. And he’s so so angry
About Gotham. About batman. About the joker. About all the events he’s seen as unjust wether to him or another
He’s not perfect. He’s never gonna be perfect same as Gotham won’t, but he’s not pure evil just as Gotham isn’t. They’re helpable tho if someone puts in the effort

It's not that shocking
Tumblr media
"You're going to have to answer for this, Bruce." (No he won't)
"We don't have time for recriminations. The city is in danger."
Funny how that always seems to happen :/ No consequences for Bruce, gotta go save the city!
Tumblr media
"But it's not my fault! It's obviously Dick's fault!" Bro. C'mon.
Tumblr media
BRO! C'MON! "I'm tired of fighting each other" you started the fight!!
"We're family. We disagree. I can make peace with that." Stop acting like the victim challenge. You have literally caused all the disagreements and you haven't once made peace with that and I really don't believe you're going to start now.
Tumblr media
And then he's literally just like, sorry this isn't my problem anymore. Yeah here you go Dick it's actually yours. See ya good luck, also nobody should be a vigilante because it'll end up bad. Yeah no I'm not going to take my own advice I want to die anyway so it's fine.
