College degree Headcanon:
Chai said he wasn't getting paid as an Ambassador for Vandelay...
Maybe he's being paid differently for now.
Maybe Chai was a college dropout and Roxanne wanted him to complete his education. While he's working as an Ambassador, Vandelay technologies is paying for his tuition. Maybe Chai will start actually having a salary after he gets his college degree.
Tumblr media
Roxanne also gifted Chai the guitar as an assurance that, just because she was paying for his degree doesn't mean he would be an indentured servant. He would still be free to follow his own dreams.

I just thought of a college AU that I don’t think I’ll ever write because it’s too expansive for what I can take on at the moment, so I wanted to share it with all of you in case someone else wants to do something with it or use it as a base for other ideas. (Just tag me if you do!)
Freshman year, Steve and Jonathan end up roommates. Steve completely ignores him most of the time since he’s too busy falling into frat life, the party scene, and doing just enough to get by in the business classes he doesn’t really care about anyway.
He meets Nancy, maybe at a study group, maybe out and about, and they end up dating. She hates the person he is with his friends but keeps it to herself. She does, however, start to help him realize that the person he’s becoming isn’t the person he wants to be. Steve’s never stopped to think about what he wants for his life. In a burst of panic and bravery at the end of the year, he switches to an open major because he doesn’t know what he wants, but he knows it isn’t business.
His parents are pissed, and his dad doesn’t fully cut him off but refuses to pay a penny toward his tuition.
Suddenly on his own, Steve barely makes the deadline to apply as an RA and makes it.
Now as a sophomore, Steve is suddenly in charge of the younger set as they come in as freshmen on his floor. He tries to keep balancing his social life with his new responsibilities, but after Nancy dumps him at a party because she can’t stay with that person anymore, he spirals and throws himself entirely in his RA role, even dropping out of his fraternity.
Meanwhile Nancy is incredibly guilty about her feelings for his old roommate, whom she has multiple classes with. It seems like Jonathan’s always understood her better. The fact that Steve has both their younger siblings on his floor? Just fucking unfair.
Steve’s also gotten closer this year to the other RA on his floor: Robin. Like him, she’s an RA for financial reasons, and it’s her who helps him realize that despite his own insecurities, he’s really good in a crisis. Steve declares a new major in counseling.
The new year he and Robin get an apartment together, and after some serious conversations, he and Nancy realize they’re better off as friends. She and Jonathan break up; she says they’ve grown apart, but Steve’s seen the way Jonathan looks at his new roommate (what is with their friend group and roommates?) as well as the way Nancy looks at Robin. He doesn’t push it on either front. It’s not his mess to deal with.
Besides, he’s too frustrated by stories he hears from his old freshman crew about their new RA and how cool he is. When Steve realizes it’s the same guy who plays guitar in the loud band that practices in the apartment next door? That only makes his hatred stronger.
But of course, such miscommunications can’t last, and Eddie comes crashing into Steve’s life whether either of them like it or not. I’m not sure what that is--maybe something about keys being forgotten or being stuck together on a project for class. Regardless, they end up realizing that their mutual jealousy of each other is unfounded when they can be cool for their kids for different reasons.
Is this the end of the fic or is this where it really gets started? No idea! Feel free to use it however you’d like!

humble and very vague prompt
nancy runs a radio show, robin is a musician
I love this! I actually read a fic with Nancy and Robin doing radio things. I’ll have to find it and share it, it was absolutely adorable. I think Robin did a little talk show. Anyway, I took this and ran with it!
Nancy settled into the creaky old office chair and looked around the studio. It was dusty and old, covered in haphazard stacks of tapes and vinyls. She breathed a long sigh, turning her gaze to the microphone in front of her. The job wasn’t glorious, but it was a job and it would get her through college. Turns out, saving the world doesn’t come with waived tuition.
Plus, running the weekly news segment meant that she was at least getting journalism experience.
Nancy’s gaze hardened and she activated the mic.
“Hello and good evening, Emerson students. My name is Nancy Wheeler and this is the evening report.”
___
After a whole two weeks, Nancy got promoted to basically managing the whole radio station after the previous manager dropped out. She didn’t mind really, but it meant she was there late.
When Nancy finished that night’s evening report, she switched off the mic with a subtle feeling of satisfaction. She looked up and immediately found her gaze locked with a set of gray blue eyes.
None other than Robin Buckley stood outside of the recording booth, a bashful smile on her gorgeously freckled face.
Gorgeous? Since when did she find Robin Buckley gorgeous?
Nancy stepped out of the booth, tilting her head. “How can I help you?” she asked.
“Really, Nance? After all we’ve been through, I’m getting the customer service voice?” Robin laughed, the sound soft and warm, raspy in all the right ways.
Nancy frowned, crossing her arms. “I suppose that’s fair,” she huffed. “But you didn’t answer my question.”
At this, Robin flushed darkly. She gestured to the guitar strapped over her shoulder, a beaten old thing and covered in paint and doodles that Robin herself must have added.
“I wanted to see if there was an open spot in the stream,” she explained. “And I wanted to see if I could play some music.”
Nancy mulled this over. She glanced back at the booth where her paper radio schedule had been left, but she could picture it perfectly in her mind anyway. She glanced back at the girl.
“I have a free 3 am slot on Tuesdays,” she offered finally, meeting Robin’s gaze. The freckled girl brightened immediately, bouncing on the heels of her boots.
“That’s awesome! I’m a night owl anyway!” she said brightly. Nancy nodded, smiling meekly as Robin launched into a rant about being more inspired at nighttime.
___
The next night, Robin returned right on time. She grinned and waved at Nancy, who was busy organizing records. Nancy returned a tight lipped smile and gestured to the recording booth.
Robin practically sauntered into it, not even bothering to close the door as she flopped into the creaky chair.
“Hello Emerson! This is, uh, this is Robin Buckley! And I’m going to play some music?” she stammered. Nancy shook her head, amusement bubbling in her chest.
“Hey Rob!” she called. The girl sat up and looked over, startled. “You have to turn the microphone on first.”
“Oh! Right! Thank you!” she called back, and Nancy laughed at the red in her cheeks.
Nancy went back to sorting as Robin introduced herself again. She had every intention of tuning the girl out, but she had to admit that the opening notes were pleasant. She listened but didn’t look as Robin strummed a gentle melody.
But Nancy was a simple bisexual woman, and the second Robin’s opened her mouth to sing, Nancy couldn’t help but swoon. The words were warm and husky, sung so sweetly into the mic. Nancy swore her heart stopped at the sound. She couldn’t help but look.
Robin was smiling softly, foot tapping in turn with the beat. Her eyes were closed and her fingers moved skillfully across the strings as she sang her heart out. Nancy’s mouth was agape, and when Robin opened an eye and saw, she grinned. Nancy swore she could hear the smile in the way Robin sang.
__
Nancy didn’t know much about Robin Buckley. She was a bit of a wallflower in high school and they ran with different crowds. Admittedly, even after risking their lives together, things had been a little weird between them. Nancy had been figuring some things out about herself—namely her bisexuality—and Vickie ended up taking up much of Robin’s free time. They simply drifted. And then ended up at the same school.
After hearing Robin’s soulful performance for the Emerson Radio, Nancy was determined to learn more about the girl.
That was why they sat together now under a tree in a courtyard, enjoying sandwiches and warm weather between classes. Nancy told herself she was studying, but the textbook page before her had not changed in over forty minutes as she listened to Robin ramble.
She learned a lot of things, and she filed each little detail away in a mental file of Robin information. A few things stuck out. Robin had always been a musical prodigy, and the guitar was actually her first instrument, learned when she was eleven. Robin had started writing songs at sixteen, and she could even sing in other languages—though her self esteem and confidence in her music was much lower than it should be.
Nancy also held onto the rather intriguing tidbit that Vickie and Robin had broken up over the summer.
All the while, Robin strummed her guitar absently, trying out lyrics here and there. Every time, Nancy could barely keep from watching in complete awe.
“Robin, you don’t give yourself enough credit,” she said finally, her tongue feeling dry. “Your voice is amazing, and I’ve never heard guitar sound so… magical.”
Robin brightened immediately, a shy smile on her face and a light dusting of pink on her face.
“Really?”
“Really.”
___
Nancy had the radio station’s music organized in three days, which meant she no longer had that excuse to hang around when Robin was in the recording booth. However, she found other ways to keep herself busy. She dusted and swept. She rearranged files. She had to do equipment checks. She must have re alphabetized the records at least four times.
Luckily, Robin never caught on.
They spent more lunches together too, and Robin began to ask Nancy for input on her music. Nancy was happy to help her with lyrics, and she was more than happy to listen dreamily as Robin rehearsed newer music. It came to be her favorite part of the day.
She was incredibly disappointed when she realized she had absolutely nothing left to do in the studio, and she was too embarrassed to ask if she could just stay and watch. Luckily, she was a problem solver, and an idea came to mind.
They were at lunch yet again when Nancy ran the idea by Robin.
“You want to do a news report?” Robin repeated slowly, tilting her head. “On me?”
“And your music,” Nancy confirmed, smiling easily as Robin leaned back against the tree they had claimed as their own. Robin had affectionately named it Steve. Robin thought it over.
“Why not?” she replied with a grin.
___
The interview was one of the most popular reports at the school. A number of notes were left on the studio door begging for more music from Robin Buckley, and a few men had the audacity to leave their phone numbers.
Robin and Nancy decided to celebrate the girl’s newfound success by getting milkshakes. Nancy got mint chocolate chip, for which Robin teased her endlessly. Robin got simple chocolate. They talked at length about the admiring notes and more about Robin’s music and everything in between. It was easy.
It was here, sitting across from the girl in a little ice cream parlor, that Nancy Wheeler realized she loved Robin Buckley. The thought should have been shocking, but instead it simply filled her with warmth, and a soft smile played at her lips as she watched Robin babble on and on. The girl caught her eye and her lips curled into a smirk.
“You’re staring, Wheeler,” she teased. Nancy nodded, raising her eyebrow.
“Is that a problem, Buckley?”
Robin reddened immediately at the use of her last name. She spluttered into her milkshake, avoiding Nancy’s gaze before half squeaking a soft, “no!”
“Let’s get out of here,” Nancy murmured, batting her eyelashes in the way she knew men and women both couldn’t resist. Robin was no different, and her eyes widened.
“O-okay!”
___
Nancy drove the pair out to a quiet spot at the edge of town, then turned the car down. She turned to face Robin, biting her lip. Robin looked uncomfortable all of the sudden, wetting her lips and fidgeting.
“Robbie? You okay?” Nancy asked, gaze softening as she reached out to place her hand on Robin’s knee. Robin stiffened, sucking in a breath and blushing darkly.
“Yeah. Yeah I’m good,” she stammered. She buried her face in her hands, avoiding Nancy’s gaze. “I just. I wanted to show you my new song.”
This got Nancy’s attention. She tilted her head and offered an encouraging smile when Robin peeked at her through her fingers.
“You know I love your music, Robs,” she promised. Robin nodded, taking a deep breath. “Which one is it?”
“You haven’t heard this one yet,” Robin murmured, meeting Nancy’s gaze shyly.
Nancy was intrigued. She settled comfortably in her seat and waited while Robin reached back and clumsily grabbed her guitar. She settled it comfortably in her lap, then paused, looking directly at the shorter girl. Nancy held her breath, unsure what to expect.
Then Robin ran her fingers softly over the strings, a warm note reverberating through the car. Nancy watched and listened with rapt attention as Robin took a deep breath. The lyrics came slow, drawn out, a hoarse croon that sent shivers down Nancy’s spine. She realized her heart was pounding.
This was a love song. There was no doubt in Nancy’s mind as each word spilled beautifully from Robin’s lips. She felt her cheeks warm with blush.
When Robin finished, she met Nancy’s gaze, her expression hopeful and vulnerable. After all, she had just bared her soul to Nancy Wheeler.
Nancy’s expression was painfully soft.
“That was beautiful,” she breathed, eyelashes batting.
“It was about you,” Robin blurted, hiding her face again in shame. Nancy grabbed her wrist and pulled her hand away, gaze serious.
“Robs,” she whispered.
“Yeah?”
Nancy leaned in, pressing her lips firmly to Robin’s. Robin whined in response, leaning into the kiss. Her hands tangled in Nancy’s hair, while Nancy’s hands traveled to Robin’s hips.
When they broke, Nancy pouted, a mischievous feeling in her chest.
“You’re such a little shit,” she grumped. Robin stared at her in shock.
“What?”
“I drove you out here so that I could confess to you. You totally stole my thunder,” Nancy huffed, a good natured grin tugging at her lips.
Robin returned the grin with a laugh, pulling Nancy in and pressing their foreheads together.
“I love you, if that wasn’t clear,” the musician muttered warmly.
Nancy kissed her soft and slow.
“I love you too, rockstar.”

Oooh, Rabbit. I know things have been hectic for you lately, and you know, I'm sending you all my best thoughts for some easier times.
In the meanwhile, I was wondering about the Brothers, as one does.
Like, do any of them play an instrument? Which (if any) one would be more apt to join me Lori during a yoga practice? Does somebody wish there was a pet around? Dogs might be hard with the constant out-of-town jobs, but a cat maybe?
IDK, you know. Just thinking...
Hi Charlie,
I have to go out for dinner and drinks with some high school friends in about 30 minutes and my anxiety is through the roof, so I'm going to take a minute to chill out and think about the boys. Forgive me if this appears rushed because it is.
Who can play a musical instrument?
August and Mike (ish)
August because I have a head canon for this incarnation as someone who grew up fairly wealthy. He went to private schools and became a bit radicalised during his undergraduate days at a very prestigious university. As a child he was forced to take classical piano lessons, and double bass, which ended up being his favoured instrument. He also has quite a good singing voice.
Mike spent one summer learning to play electric guitar, purely to spend time with the hot older women (she was 19 and he was 17) he saw putting guitar tuition ads up on telephone poles around his town. He learned 4 chords and that the tutor had a live in boyfriend. He still has the guitar around somewhere...
Who would join Lori during yoga practice?
Sy.
You might be surprised by this, but Sy started practicing yoga while still in Special Forces. At first he was dismissive, but after having some free time between deployments, he joined a couple of his buddies and it was a revelation. He found that practising yoga in conjunction with his weight lifting actually increased his strength and mobility, not to mention how the mind-body connection helped him assess situations in the field better and helped his cool his temper. Lori may actually find, that she could learn a thing or two from Sy.
Does someone wish there was a pet around?
Sy and Geralt and Walter.
Sy misses Aika obviously. He comes from a family of dog owners and has always had one around, if not his own, then he'd make friends with a neighbour with a dog and take them for runs and hikes. BTW I originally had Aika in this story but I cut her out because she wasn't really going to be adding much to the story.
Geralt almost had a pet in the story too. I was going to have him with a pet cat called Roach, but I decided against it. Again, I didn't think it would add anything to the story except as a little joke and then what was I going to do with it.
Walter is the kind of person who I think should have a pet. He's a little broken and I feel like a pet would be good for him, ground him and force him to keep a healthy routine/work-life balance. I'd start him off with a gold fish though, but for some reason I think he'd like either a snake or a lizard.
Thanks for the ask!
❤️ Rabbit

Brian May Brings Out the Stars
Steven Rosen, Guitar World, March 1984
Tumblr media
The Queen guitarist brought together some heavies with Eddie Van Halen on guitar and Phil Chen on bass – for his Star Fleet Project.
BRIAN MAY emerges from one of the myriad cubicles housed within the Capitol Records tower, his six-foot-plus frame showing signs of fatigue due to overwork and a bout with the flu. He is in town finishing tracks for the upcoming Queen album (their twelfth), overseeing the release of his first jam-oriented solo record, coordinating a band video and frantically looking for a way to pick up his child at school. After much juggling and rearranging of schedules there appears to be a free moment and with that May settles his lanky frame into the divan, removes his clogs, and oh-so-calmly inquires "So, what would you like to talk about?"
And before word one is spoken there is a buzz on the lounge telephone. It is May's son informing him that he has arrived safely at home and, as if mentally checking off another responsibility taken care of, Brian settles even deeper into his seat and beams a wide smile.
May has much to smile about. Since the quartet's first album release in September, 1973, Queen has garnered eight gold albums (four of which went platinum), and recorded four singles reaching gold status (two of these went platinum). May, for the most part, has been the helmsman of the band's success. His unique approach to the multi-tracking and orchestrating of guitar parts has set the band apart from all others and the singularly distinctive sound he creates with a self-built guitar stamps Queen indelibly.
May's guitar architecture has been a process many years in the making. The son of a banjo playing father, Brian was taught a few chords by the elder May and after seeing a film of English rock idol Tommy Steele demanded a guitar of his own. It was a small-bodied instrument, owing to his then eight-year-old hands, and with great confusion he attempted to translate the four-string chords from the banjo to the six-string forms on the guitar.
"I never had any tuition on the guitar," explains May. "I did have piano lessons from about twelve to fifteen but I got really impatient and didn't like practicing. I gave it up, which I really regret now."
In grammar school he was involved in a series of bands playing the lunch hours and in fact he started a guitar club which seemed to attract most of the "eccentrics" on campus. These primal bands never performed in public because it went against Brian's fundamentally academic background, a philosophy highly espoused by both parents. The musical muse had already touched the young May and he further set the wheels in motion by electrifying that first acoustic guitar.
"I wound some wire around some magnets," describes May, whose penchant for electronics and construction would later lead him to design his own guitar, "and I plugged that into a record player and that was my electric guitar. It was pretty bad but it's amazing how much you can learn from something as simple as that. You get so involved." He later built an instrument of his own. "My father and I set about it and came up with different designs and finally built it. Originally, I designed the pickups but I ditched them. And although they had a good sound they didn't have a uniform enough feel on top. So I threw them out and put Burns pickups which were commercially available at the time. And that's what I still use. And I fill them up with this epoxy to stop them from being microphonic. Apart from that they're standard."
The guitar – dubbed The Red Fireplace (due to its brickish color) by the Queen members – had a number of peculiarities allowing May to play on it in a fashion denied by other instruments. The tremolo assembly is a far-reaching unit designed to lower the bottom string over an octave. In an age where Floyd Rose and Kahler vibrato pieces are common hardware on most Stratocaster-influenced instruments, this octave-lowering ability seems inconsequential. However, May designed this well over ten years ago and in that period it did have special properties. The guitarist does look at it merely as an effect and has not integrated it into his style in the fashion of someone like Edward Van Halen.
"I like to do airplane noises and crap like that," chides May. "Any kind of cheap gimmick."
The guitar, he admits, is not an easy one to play. Other musicians have strapped on the instrument and while they were impressed with the concept, became depressed by the function. The switches – all bought stock from the hardware store – are positioned in strange fashion and even the playability left most other artists dumbfounded. The neck is fashioned from a piece of old mahogany removed from a fireplace and is treated with several coats of clear finish which gives the fretboard a plastic feel. The main stress points of the body (where the neck is attached to the body; the bridge attachment, etc.) are built from oak while several other types of softwood permeate the main body shell. A semi-acoustic body (no f-holes but an abundance of hollow areas) creates a very live sound and this, too, has proved bothersome to other players in attempting to eliminate feedback. All in all, the instrument is tailored strictly for May's needs.
May's needs live are quite far-reaching. Because he must duplicate – or attempt to duplicate – the tangle of guitar parts liberally sprinkled on virtually every Queen track, he has developed an amplifier setup linked to a series of echo units resulting in a veritable web of sound. In the earlier days of the band, the guitarist wheeled nine Vox AC-30's on stage but only two were actually used. Several other amplifiers were used to house the echo signal (supplied by a modified Echoplex) and in May's own words, this is how the system ran:
"I basically used two amps for the guitar and an Echoplex which was specially extended so I could get long delays. I modified that myself. The modification was to put in a long rail instead of a short one and to turn the feedback back to zero so it's just a single repeat. And the delay comes back into another two (amplifiers) and yet another delay which goes into another two. At the most there are six working at one time."
Most recently he has found that digital units are more technically capable of handling these echo chores and he also realized their durability was far greater than the rather moody – and primitive – Echoplexes. He now makes use of a Digital Recorder because it features the facility of setting time by hitting buttons rather than turning a knob. This frees him to set a rhythm, press once and press again, and lock in the time of the repeat in a single motion.
The only other effect used in a live setting is a self-made one-stage preamp booster producing more signal and increasing the lead gain. By May's standards it is the "crudest" preamp in existence and only offers a gain of about 10 and a very slight bass cut.
May used an abbreviated version of this same setup when he recently and informally jammed with Edward Van Halen; Phil Chen (former bassist with Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck); Alan Gratzer (drummer for REQ Speedwagon); and Fred Mandel (former keyboardist with Alice Cooper and auxiliary player with Queen), in Los Angeles' Record Plant studios. The event took place on April 21-22 of last year when May was in Los Angeles biding time between Queen projects. A long-time friend of Van Halen, May gave Edward a call, assembled the other musicians and brought them together for two days of simple jamming and playing. What resulted was a mini-album (three tracks) titled Brian May & Friends: Star Fleet Project, produced by May and self-described as "A relaxed set of people just laying back and enjoying the fresh inspiration of each other's playing."
This shot of new blood, as it were, was an injection the guitarist sorely needed. Queen had just completed a tour of Japan that previous November and for virtually five months the group had not spoken to each other.
"I realized a big gap in my life was not playing with other musicians. I wanted to get out and find out what it was like to do that. I had almost never done it. We've never been into the superstar thing of people guesting on the albums. In this case we really needed it because we got sorely fed up with each other. We decided we couldn't stand the sight of each other for a few months and we had to take a break. And we did. So we needed that new energy. Roger went out and did another solo album and Freddie did some stuff with various people, including Michael Jackson, and John did some playing with other people and this was my thing. I produced a group called Heavy Petting, played on a few sessions and did this thing. I still think that Queen is stronger than any of its parts; that's why there's still a band called Queen."
On the album Brian uses his array of Vox AC-30's along with The Red Fireplace and while the album is completely live (including May's vocals on an old composition entitled 'Let Me Out') the guitarist's sound is unmistakably present. Because of the live setting May is placed in a rather naked situation without benefit of overdub or second take. He does manage to tear off some stinging blues licks in 'Blues Breaker', a twelve-bar jam dedicated one of May's main influences, Eric Clapton.
"I was a huge Clapton fan," acknowledges May. "I was very, very impressed with Cream. I saw one of their very first shows at Eel Pie Island [an early English stamping ground for many of the then-emerging British bands]. It was obviously an adventure for them at that point. It was really electric and they were all feeling each other out. There was 'Clapton is God' scribbled on all the walls in those days."
Hence the dedication to Clapton on the May solo album. So strong was this attraction that one of Brian's early bands (Smile) covered several Cream compositions and the band itself comprised a guitar, bass and drums setup. Smile was composed of May on guitar, Tim Staffell on vocals and Roger Taylor on drums, and even at this early point the guitarist, a bachelor of science in physics, was experimenting with the guitar orchestration which would come to full fruition several years later on the Queen II album.
"The second album [Queen II] was much different. Then we had a chance to do with the studio all the things we wanted to do. The multi-part guitars and all that. 'Procession' is a completely guitar-orchestrated thing but when the song ['Father to Son'] comes in and you expect just the crunch of the guitar, there's awash of harmony guitars behind. I always wanted to do that and that fulfilled a dream. I wanted to get that on record. I was very upset because I heard Mike Oldfield was doing guitar orchestra things and I wouldn't let myself listen to it. Because I was afraid he was doing what I always wanted to do first. But it turned out to be very different. But that sort of stated what I was into. And when Queen II came out it really didn't connect with a lot of people. A lot of people thought at that time we'd already forsaken rock music. It just didn't relate in their head and they said 'Why don't you play things like "Liar" and "Keep Yourself Alive" which were on the first album. And we said, 'Give it another listen, it's all there, the hipness is there but it's all layered. And it's a new approach.' But nowadays people say Why don't you play like Queen II?' [laughter] A lot of our real close fans think like that. And I still like that album a lot. It's not perfect, it has the imperfections of youth and the excesses of youth, but boy, I think that's our biggest single step ever."
While there are flaws – Brian's parts on several tracks are painfully obvious and highly undramatic (particularly on 'Procession') and the quality of sound on a few of the solos ('Father to Son' has an instrumental passage which is both gritty and metallic) is embarrassing – it is the foundation for the mesmerizing May sound to come. Part of this deficiency in quality is owing to the album's sixteen-track format.
From the beginning, though, May had a vision in his approach to the composition of guitar parts. Part of Queen's stance was the denial of keyboards or other electronic equipment as embellishment to sound (each album was tagged with a "no synthesizers!" warning) and not until The Game did they include any instrument of this type. May saw the guitar as a far more human musical device than the cold steel sounds being generated by an ever-increasing numbers of synthesizers. He felt that every guitar part should embody the same tension and emotion as the main line.
"The guitar for me is an emotional thing and you consciously play it, you consciously mark out the notes and squeeze the string. But there's sort of an unconscious thing there too and the emotion comes from that. There are things going in there which you almost don't realize you're putting in. That's the thing about the guitar, it has this tension and this real emotion. And I wanted the orchestra behind the guitar, every part to have that tension and emotion in it. And that's when I thought you would get the maximum impact and effect. So I just didn't want someone hitting a chord on a keyboard and synthesizers were already beginning to be around and most of the synthesizers at that time were very cold and had no emotion. I wanted it all to be guitars and so that's why I did it. On every part I was out there and pulling everything into it I could. All the emotion and bending just where I thought it should be bent.
"And the thing about a lot of guitar harmonies that people still don't realize is that they shouldn't be parallel any more than vocal harmonies should be parallel. That's not the way to get the real feeling into it. They should do all this crossing over and little discords and all this weaving in and out. Just the same way people build up orchestral scores."
To further tattoo the May sound, the guitarist early on discarded conventional picks (heavy) for an English sixpence, a coin roughly the diameter of an American nickel but with serrated edges. May likes the flexibility of the attack to originate from the fingers and not the pick and he has found that by positioning the coin in a sideways fashion one can obtain a smooth attack owing to the basic malleability of the metal. Angling the pick results in a very raspy and metallic tone due to the serrated edges.
"I find it very sensitive. My fingers are just about touching the strings and you can feel everything that goes on between the string and your finger."
May went on to further develop this layered guitar technique on such songs as 'Killer Queen' (unique in that the three-part harmonized guitar had each line beginning on a different bar), 'Another One Bites the Dust', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Rock It (Prime Jive)' and a list with too many entries to mention. Aside from the Star Fleet Project album, May has been working doggedly on a new Queen album scheduled for release about now and tentatively titled The Works. It will undoubtedly feature May in new and exciting situations and while the band has loosened its stranglehold on the application of synthesizers, Brian's description of the album as "heavy" is an assurance that his guitar will be the predominant instrument.
"I see it (The Works) as being a lot closer to the middle period than the last three or four albums. A lot closer to A Night at the Opera and News of the World and a little bit like The Game. But some of the writing is the next step beyond, it's not going back in time. Because we've integrated some of the modern technologies. But we haven't gone totally toward machine music because the fact is we don't like it.
"Everyone thought we had this huge monster plan, the Queen Machine, but it's an illusion. What happened was we followed our noses and we were lucky enough to find an audience who went along with us. It's as simple as that. We're very fortunate."

Why Choosing Guitar Classes is an Excellent Idea?
Hiring a professional tutor for Violin Lessons For Adults Near Me is very advised if you want to become technically excellent in guitar playing.
While most self-taught guitarists will undoubtedly dismiss the concept, practicing with a guitar coach can provide various benefits. You may be unaware, but some of the top guitarists in the field of music have taken professional tuition at some time in their careers.
Of course, some people are uncomfortable with the idea of working with a teacher. Others may be reluctant to enroll in a class because they cannot afford the costs and time needed to finish a course. Despite this, it has been demonstrated that individuals that try to take guitar instruction progress faster than their classmates.
Consider this: even the best athlete in a particular sport or the most intellectual student in the school requires the direction of coaches and teachers. In the same vein, Guitar Classes Near Me can be of great assistance to you as a musician.
Your instructor for Beginner Piano Lessons For Adults could offer comments, pointing out areas of strength that you may be unaware of. They will also discover and educate you how to get around your shortcomings and undesirable behaviors as a player. In addition, you will be given listening tasks and additional duties between courses. If you have any queries about how to choose the correct instruments, your instructor is a great resource. Are you nervous about an impending live performance? Your teacher can also provide you with pointers. Simply said, your guitar skills, knowledge, and confidence will increase faster than you could ever dream on your own.
Selecting a teacher with the appropriate level of expertise and skill is essential if you want to get the most out of your classes. Whenever meeting or approaching potential tutors, ask plenty of questions. Tell them what type of music you would like to learn. Inquire about their previous experience as guitarists. Inquire about their fees and anything else that piques your curiosity.
Guitar mastery is not an unachievable objective if you are ready to pay the price. Private Guitar Lessons For Beginners are an excellent investment, particularly if you are passionate about following your musical goals. Your family, friends, and bandmates will be astounded as never before.
There are many methods to play the guitar. If you intend to engage a tutor, you must be willing to shell out a significant sum of money for the class because it may be costly. Another option for getting Clarinet Lessons Near Me is to utilize online resources. You would be surprised at how many guitar aficionados will share free tips, lessons, and pictorial guidance on how to play the guitar. To take benefit of these activities, you must first purchase a guitar and afterwards search online for guitar lessons with Singing Classes Near Me.
To effectively learn how to play the guitar, it is necessary to be patient as well as grasp the notes. Since music interpretation is a standard, this course will be essential.

By Leigh Fuge published 24 August 22 Accessible voicings from the Seattle legends in standard and drop D tunings In the early '90s, when Grunge ruled the world, Seattle natives Soundgarden were set on forging a slightly heavier and inventive path. They seemed at home sitting beside their Grunge counterparts, but their sludgy riffs, unusual time signatures and haunting melodies certainly made them stand out from the crowd. In this lesson we’re going to check out four key chords from their career as played by guitarist Kim Thayil and frontman/guitarist, the late, great Chris Cornell. And though the band were known for using an array of alternate guitar tunings in their songs, we're focussing on their work in standard and drop D to make this lesson as easily accessible as possible to players. This chord is the opening chord from the track Black Hole Sun. It’s very simple to play. You just barre across the lowest four strings with a single finger. This chord is played in Drop D tuning, so the root note of the G is actually now located on the fifth fret. This chord appears many times through the song, both as a Gsus4, and in other positions of the neck. During the Pre-Chorus of the track Outshined, this Dno5 chord makes an appearance. It’s a D Major barre chord rooted off the A string, but the 5th interval (Which is the 7th fret on the D string) is removed. Removing intervals from chords is a great way to free up sonic space in the mix for other instruments. This chord is heard at the end of the intro to the track Fell On Black Days. It’s played with the 8th fret on the Low E and the 7th fret on the A played and combined with the other 4 strings of the guitar played open. This chord has a slightly dissonant quality, it contains both a major third (B) and a minor third (A#) which his not a common thing to see in chords. This chord is another from Black Hole Sun, which is a track that is jam packed full of interesting chord voicings. This is another Drop D tuned chord. What you have is basically a D Dominant 7th chord, played in a much lower register than usual, but with the major 3rd removed from the chord. The removal of the 3rd gives it a slightly suspended sound, which adds tension. Leigh Fuge is a guitar player and content creator with a love for all things '80s. How To Choose The Best Online Music Lessons
You signed up for music lessons in Los Angeles, went to a couple, but eventually had to stop due to time constraints. We all have musicians buried inside. However, not everyone has the opportunity to develop their gift.
Tumblr media
Online music lessons are a terrific method to begin started, regardless of whether you're a die-hard music lover eager to learn how to play the guitar or one who wants to pick up a passion left unfinished.
In this post, the alternatives and things to think about when selecting online classes are discussed.
Online music lessons: are they a viable option?
As per tradition anyone who wanted to learn to play an instrument had to sign up for a class. There, a teacher would coach students on proper hand positions, postures, and playing techniques. There are several online sources that offer helpful piano and guitar tuition. Videos and readings on theory are also included. Professional musicians and other music experts prepared the study materials. Along with fundamental skills, they also offer helpful advice that even a regular tutor might not offer. Online music classes are a trustworthy source as a result.
The Best Ways to Pick Online Music Lessons
Specialized instruction: There are several online music courses that are made to cater to different demographics. They feature tutorials for various musical instruments like the guitar, piano, drums, and horn. Specific programs offer specific training for a given instrument. You should pick the online music courses that best suit your needs.
The various teaching techniques that the instructors employ are one of the main factors to be taken into account. While some web-based courses train students using online module presentations, others use textbooks. The finest courses incorporate both module presentations and instrument theory.
Background check:
It's important to have access to reliable information when looking for online music courses. Based on example tutorials that are available online, you can assess the learning experience's quality. Another excellent method of evaluating a class is through other students' testimonials. First-person stories illustrate a class's advantages and disadvantages, assisting you in making an intelligent decision.
Customer service:
In order to work, web modules and music video lessons need the proper software. Customer service is therefore essential. If there are ever any problems with functionality or access, a strong tech support will assist.
Convenience and adaptability:
The typical training setting did not fit your schedule or financial situation, which is one of the main reasons you chose to enroll in online music classes. Choose a training plan that enables you to train at your own speed. You can download some apps at one time and use them later.
Cost:
Numerous websites offer free music classes, theory, and resources. Free educational resources, however, frequently just cover the fundamentals. Students frequently need to pay a small fee to access premium content on most music websites. If you decide to pay, find out how much it will cost and whether there is a money-back guarantee. You can select an online music course that fits your budget based on this.
