The refrigerator rattled as Ellie shut it with her hip, a frown on her lips as she carried the glasses of wine over to the butcher block island. Chris could barely pay any attention to her expression as he read the Google page that took up half the screen on his computer, the other half being occupied with a calendar for the rapidly-approaching summer months.
Ellie put the glasses down before she wrapped her arms around Chris’ broad shoulders, pressing a soft kiss to his bearded cheek to help relieve the tension in his body. She knew how much Ashlee’s impending move was weighing on him and dealing with the logistics of it didn’t help at all.
“What about that horseback riding camp?” Ellie quietly asked as she rubbed a hand over his shoulder, reminding him of the camp at a local equestrian center.
“I don’t know if Hazel being in charge of an animal that big is a good idea. The carnage she causes with a mini shopping cart is bad enough,” he muttered with upturned lips as he made himself chuckle. His fingers quickly began scrolling again before he sat upright some more, “Oh here’s an art camp, I bet she’d like that.”
Ellie nodded, reaching onto the plate in front of her for her slice of pizza. “There’s also that science camp through the school I’ve heard is fun,” she suggested, gently knocking her shoulder against Chris’ as she munched on their dinner.
“These camps are going to be really good for her but I still don’t know what I’m going to do on my days working,” Chris sighed, shooting her a sideways grimace as he double-checked the calendar before he began to register Hazel for the art camp. “I just didn’t expect Ashlee to be gone this soon.”
“Have you talked to your mom?”
He paused, sighing quietly before he nodded. It was something he’d put a lot of thought into given the new situation, and while he was relieved Hazel wouldn’t be leaving him, it didn’t mean it wasn’t stressful to figure out. “Yeah and she’s more than happy to have Hazel on Thursdays and Saturdays, but she works Fridays and wouldn’t be able to pick Hazel up on time from any of these camps. Besides, I don’t really feel comfortable having her do that much… it’s not her responsibility,” he told Ellie, trailing off at the end as he shrugged.
She stayed quiet for several moments, long enough that Chris’ curiosity was piqued. Once he finished entering her medical history, he turned to give Ellie a look. “I was thinking about that too…” She finally replied, a nervous look on her face.
Chris nodded, reassuring her, “I think I have an idea though.”
“I do too,” Ellie responded, pausing as she raised a brow at him. “But what’s yours?”
“I think the best solution is to look at hiring a nanny,” Chris sighed and explained, his fingers tapping against the wooden counter. “That way the responsibility wouldn’t fall on my mom and they could have her Friday and Saturday until I’m off. It’s not that unusual and I have the guest room too.”
Ellie was quiet as she listened to his words, nodding carefully before she tentatively pointed out, “But is bringing a new person into Hazel’s life while all of this is happening a good idea?”
“I know, but I don’t know what else to do,” he sighed. “Ash already offered to pay more in child support because of the new arrangement, so it’d probably cover the cost.”
Ellie turned as she listened to him, leaning her side against the fabric bar stool and looking at him.“You could ask me about my idea… it’s a pretty good one…” she told him with a smirk, her hand reaching out to loosely grasp his own.
Chris huffed out a laugh, shaking his head and asking, “Alright smarty pants, what’s your genius idea?”
“I know someone who loves Hazel, owns her own business, and would be able to adjust her schedule to be able to pick up Hazel from camps on Friday and have her until you’re done with work on Saturday,” she smiled as she squeezed his hand.
He dropped his head and sighed, closing his eyes as he realized what she was offering. “Ellie-”
“No, hear me out for a minute,” Ellie interrupted him firmly. “Chris, none of this is going to be easy for Hazie. She needs some consistency and I could pick her up and even take her to your house so she'll have all her toys and be in her house. I love Hazel and would adore getting to spend more time with her.”
His lower lip jutted out and his jaw clenched as he listened to her words, unable to wrap his head around the generous offer. It was nothing short of over the top kindness, but that was everything Ellie was, even to strangers. But for him and Hazel? He couldn’t help but think they didn’t warrant this shift, this extra responsibility added to her plate, just to ease some stress off of his shoulders. “I just can’t have you do that much,” he whispered to her, thoughts echoing through his mind as the sound of Dodger’s light snoring carried into the kitchen from the living room.
She laughed, and the genuine smile that appeared on her face never failed to warm him from the inside out. “Well if you’re really planning on marrying me then you’re going to have to get used to relying on me a little more,” she retorted playfully.
“It’s not that I wouldn’t love for you and Hazel to be together, I just don’t feel like I can ask you to do that, Elles. Especially not when you’ve just started your own business,” he attempted to explain as he watched her and grasped her hand tighter.
“Well with all these camps she’s in, I’d be able to work most of the day on Fridays anyway, and then on Saturdays, Brooke has it covered,” Ellie assured him, and she smiled before she dropped his hand for a moment to drink her wine, but before he barely realized it, her hand was back in his. “Honey, I want to do this.”
“...Are you sure?” He finally asked her, his voice soft and unsure.
“Completely.”
“I can’t tell you what a load that takes off my mind knowing Hazel will be with you,” Chris admitted with a smile. “Besides, I kind of like seeing my girls together.”
“Well I might not be quite as cute as your other girl but I also don’t bruise your heels with a shopping cart,” Ellie grinned, and Chris couldn’t help but burst into laughter at that. Once their laughter stopped and he made a move back to look at his computer – which was still open on the registration – Ellie’s voice interrupted him as she asked, “So when are you going to tell Hazel?”
“Ashlee and I are telling her tomorrow morning,” Chris murmured, huffing out a sigh. “God, I’m dreading that.”
“Let’s not borrow tomorrow’s troubles. You’ll handle it in the morning with Ashlee,” Ellie reassured him, her hand moving to travel up and down his back comfortingly. “But how about you tell me all the camps Hazel’s in so I can do my schedule and start planning all the fun things I’m going to do with her.”
Chris watched her with thinly-veiled near-awe, and he shook his head as he playfully asked, “Why do I have a feeling I’m about to be replaced as Hazel’s favorite?”
“Who are we kidding, neither of us can compete with Dodger,” Ellie retorted, and it was then that Chris realized how well she not only knew him – but how well she knew Hazel as well – only after a short time in their lives, and it warmed his heart to know that what they already had between them was only going to continue to grow.
Tumblr media
Chris rinsed his hand off in the sink, before he dropped the peanut butter and jelly covered knife into the dishwasher, then placed the sandwich and cut up strawberries on one of Hazel’s purple plates. He passed by the living room – where Scott was watching a Red Sox game – before he reached the small playroom to tell Hazel lunch was ready. But his brows furrowed as he looked over the room, finding his curly-haired daughter sitting at her mini-table, furiously coloring away in a coloring book. “Hey Hazelnut, I thought you were supposed to pick up your toys?” He asked her pointedly, leaning his hip against the open archway as he looked over the disaster of a room.
Her tiny shoulders quickly shrugged, her voice unhappy as she simply replied, “I don’t wanna.”
“I told you to pick them up before lunch and then that it was naptime,” he reminded her. He’d been cognizant of the fact that Hazel had woken up earlier than normal and had already had an emotional morning, and while that was already enough for him to attempt a nap, he was desperately looking forward to a break to decompress from the day.
But she clearly had other plans as she looked up at him with a deep frown on her little face, shouting, “No!”
“Hazel June, pick them up now. No arguments,” Chris ordered, and he pushed himself off of the wooden archway to carefully cross the room, but not before he could step on a Lego. He quickly bit back the several curse words he wanted to say before he pulled the markers and coloring book away from Hazel and pointed at the mess behind her.
“I don’t want to take a nap!” She insisted as she pushed the messy strands of hair out of her face, and every word from her mouth was only increasing the pounding headache that had started for Chris.
“Hazel Evans this is not a discussion,” he told her, his voice low and stern as he took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose.
She let out a shuddering breath as she cried, “I want Ellie!”
He shook his head, gently lifting her from the seat and standing her up, nudging her in the direction of her toys as he ordered, “Not until you pick up your toys.”
“I just want my Ellie!” The little girl pleaded again, her voice wavering as furious tears fell from her eyes.
“Hazel, I already told you to pick up these toys!” Chris finally snapped, frustrated at the situation, at Hazel’s inactions, at the stupid waves of pain in his foot, and even at the damn occasionally-flickering lightbulb overhead, the very one he’d been meaning to change for weeks.
As Hazel’s cries grew louder and Chris’ mind continued to scream at him to do something, his brother stepped into the room, his voice a much-needed calming force as he said, “Hey, relax for a minute.”
“Scott, I don’t need you to tell me what to do,” Chris replied harshly, jerking his arm away as Scott touched it lightly. He instantly regretted the action when he saw the way Hazel’s eyes widened and her breath caught, her eyes bouncing between her father and uncle.
“Bro, remember what happened this morning, okay?” Scott whispered under his breath, his face serious as Chris met his eyes. “Everyone’s emotional… just go take Dodger out and breathe. I’ll handle this.”
He nodded, swallowing as embarrassment suddenly flooded his system. He looked at Hazel in shame, seeing the way her body wracked with tears. As Scott once again whispered “I got this,” to Chris, he leaned down, pressing a long kiss to his daughter’s forehead and squeezing her quickly before he turned, leaving the room.
Chris whistled for Dodger, meeting the always-happy pooch in the mudroom as he clipped his leash to Dodger’s red collar, and he barely remembered to grab his phone from the kitchen before he hastily left the house. He moved quickly down the street, frantic to put some distance between himself and Hazel as he processed what’d just happened, how he blew up over nothing, and took out his frustration with the situation around them on his young, innocent daughter.
Before he could spiral further, Chris reached into his pocket for his phone. He paused as he stared at his phone background, at the large smile that filled Hazel’s face as she held an ice cream cone in her hand and sat on the curb outside their local ice cream stand. Feeling as though his tail was between his legs, he called the one person who’d hold no judgment, listening as the call rang until she answered. “Hey Elles,” he murmured, his voice quiet and sad. “You busy?”
“No I’m just at home,” he heard her reply, a rustling in the background. “I’ve been thinking about you guys all day. How did everything go this morning?”
“I think we ruined Hazel’s life,” he told her drily, a frown on his face as he watched Dodger sniff a bush. “And I’m not joking.”
Ellie’s sharp intake of breath carried through the call, her voice sad as she sympathetically answered, “Oh honey, that’s not true.”
“Ellie, she was so upset. At first she just didn’t seem to understand and then she cried, but then Hazel just wouldn’t say anything,” he recalled, unable to get the image of Hazel’s blank stare and then her sobs out of his mind, or the way she clung to him as he carried her back to their car when they left the park.
“Well she’s processing it, give her time,” Ellie suggested, her voice kind and even. “Think of how hard it was for you to process.”
But Chris shook his head, shooting a tight smile as they passed a neighbor on their walk. “She hates me, Elles,” he repeated.
“You know she adores you,” Ellie reassured him, but Chris couldn’t help but think those days of Hazel’s unending love were behind them.
“I just chewed her out for not picking up her fuckin’ toys… I chewed her out an hour after she found out her mother is moving. What kind of a fuckin’ father am I?” He asked incredulously, turning to begin walking back towards his home.
Ellie was quiet for several beats and he distracted himself by watching Dodger stare at a bird, but he nervously tapped his fingers against his legs as he waited for Ellie’s response. “Beating yourself up isn’t going to help anything, honey,” she finally began tentatively, but he knew she was trying to show her sympathy.
“You should have seen the look on her face, Ellie. She was so upset and then just cried for you,” he confessed, his heart breaking at the memory.
Ellie was silent for another beat, her voice confused when she finally asked, “For me?”
“She just said she wanted you,” he repeated, unable to not hear Hazel’s pleading voice in his mind.
He heard Ellie hastily stand, something – probably a book – thumping to the floor, forgotten in her rush. “I’m coming right now,” she told him as she moved, the call switching to speaker as she quickly gathered her things.
“Elles, I love that she wants you but why doesn’t she want me? I want to help her and all I do is hurt her,” he asked her, insecurity filling him as his fears about his and Hazel’s relationship only grew.
“Christopher Evans, stop right now and listen to me,” Ellie told him firmly, pausing until Chris quieted down. “Hazel adores you to no end but today was a shitty day for all of you. I think you both just need some comfort and I’ll be there in less than ten minutes so just hold out until then, okay?”
He nodded his head, not even realizing for a long moment that she couldn’t see it and eventually spit out a worried, “Okay,” before they hung up. Chris could feel the deep regret and anxiety flowing through his body, hating how all of this hurt the little girl that he loved more than anything in the world. He kept his head down, just staring at the pavement as he kept walking Dodger, letting the sweet pooch stretch his legs but all too soon he was back right where he started and walked into the house where Hazel’s loud, exhausted wails could still be heard.
Chris let Dodger off his leash before pulling off his shoes, quietly walking into the living room where Scott sat with Hazel on the floor, rubbing her back while she loudly cried. He saw the look of pure distress on Scott’s face before he noted to his brother, “Sounds like it’s not going too well in here.”
His brother frowned, glancing towards him before focusing on Hazel and moving her hair from in front of her face. “I’m trying but nothing is working,” he finally admitted to him.
“Hazel, honey I’m so sorry I got upset earlier. Can you forgive me?” Chris’s voice was soft as he sat down on the floor in front of her, his heart practically aching as he heard her hiccup interrupting the steady flow of tears down her cheeks as she nodded her little head. He couldn’t stand it any longer and just held his hands out for her, telling her, “C’mere Basil.”
She scooted closer to him, letting Chris lift her into his lap and holding her tight against his chest. He couldn’t imagine all the emotions flowing through Hazel right now, knowing just how upset and shocked he had been when he found out about Ashlee’s move but at least he had an adult brain that could process it. He hated hearing the deep wails muffled against his chest as she cried, making Chris’ own tears start to flow down his cheeks while Scott reached over to squeeze his shoulder, doing what he could to comfort them.
Although Hazel’s tears didn’t stop, he could feel her body relaxing a little bit in his embrace and it made him feel as if he was doing at least one thing right. He wanted to be that place of comfort for her, but in this moment he felt like he needed his own bit of comfort and calm, which soon came in the form of a compassionate blonde who came racing into his home only moments later.
He watched her face drop as she looked at them both crying in the middle of the living room but Ellie wasted no time dropping to her knees and brought an arm around Chris’ broad shoulders while she pressed a kiss to his cheek. Seeing that they’d want a moment, Scott quietly stood and excused himself to the kitchen, leaving the three alone in the living room that was only filled with the sound of Hazel’s loud cries.
Chris tilted his head, giving Ellie a grateful half-smile before he focused his attention back on Hazel. “Basil, look who’s here,” he murmured quietly, his hand moving to loosen her grasp on his silver chain.
“I-I want m-m-my Ellie,” Hazel whimpered, her breath coming out in shudders as she clung to Chris’ frame.
He saw the way Ellie’s shoulders slouched in pity at the cry, and she held her arms out, telling her, “Oh Hazie girl, I’m here.”
Chris let go of his tight grasp on Hazel, letting Ellie take the curly headed sobbing girl and pull her into her own lap. She held onto Hazel while pressing a kiss to her forehead then rested her cheek against it, slowly rocking her back and forth while reminding her, “It’s okay Hazie, we’re right here for you.”
He just sat there watching every motherly bit of Ellie come pouring out as she comforted his daughter, holding her tight and reminding her that everything was going to be alright and somehow managing to remind Chris of the same thing in the process. Chris eventually stood to his feet, going to the kitchen to get a glass of water for Hazel before bringing it back and resuming his place on the carpet, Ellie giving him a thankful smile.
“Okay Hazie, it’s time to take a big deep breath. You ready?” Ellie asked, lifting her head up but keeping Hazel right in her lap. Ellie grabbed the hem of her tee shirt, lifting it up to wipe away the tears covering Hazel’s cheeks and chin before the sniffling girl nodded and took a deep breath with Ellie, helping to calm her tears.
Chris gave the little girl a tight smile before he leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead. As he continued wiping her face and moved to messily tie her hair back, he quietly asked, “Are you hungry, Basil?”
“N-no,” she whispered, her wide brown eyes blinking slowly and tiredly as she leaned against Ellie.
“How about just a drink of water, then?” Ellie suggested, her head downturned as the couple each watched Hazel hesitate before she nodded. Chris handed the children’s cup to Hazel, watching as she slowly took a long sip of water before relaxing again. “Chris, can you go get Mr. Duck?”
But Hazel’s brows furrowed momentarily before she interjected, “I want Clucky!”
Chris pressed another kiss to her cheek before going to the playroom to find her chicken stuffed animal, digging through the bins of plush toys before finding it and bringing it back to the living room. He couldn’t help but stop for a moment, a pang in his heart as he looked at the scene in front of him. Rather than on the floor as they were a minute ago, Ellie had moved to sit on the couch with Hazel in her lap, laying up against Ellie’s chest with her head tucked under Ellie’s chin. The caring blonde had pulled a blanket over them – the very one she’d made him for Christmas – and rubbed her hand up and down Hazel’s back, helping to comfort the little girl who was already struggling to keep her eyes open. When Chris held out the stuffed chicken, Ellie took it, pretending to make Clucky kiss Hazel on the cheek and getting a giggle out of the tired girl who then tucked her toy under her arm before her eyes fully closed.
It was several minutes filled with much-needed silence before Scott’s tentative footsteps sounded, his younger brother coming down the front hall and pausing in the open archway of the living room. “Hey Chris, I’m going to head out,” he quietly announced.
“Okay, I’ll go out with you,” Chris replied, gently pressing a kiss to both Hazel and Ellie’s heads before he stood up, heading towards the front door with Scott. “Thanks for everything, Scott. I don’t know what I would have done without you today.”
“Of course, you know I’m always here for you,” Scott told him without hesitation, his shoulder bumping Chris’ as he paused for a moment. “Anything you need, you can always call me.”
Chris nodded, his lips pursed as he admitted, “I might be needing you a lot more while Ashlee’s moving if Hazel keeps reacting like this.”
“I’m not so sure about that, I think Ellie’s got everything covered,” Scott replied with a chuckle, glancing behind them, barely able to see Ellie and Hazel on the couch. “Although I think she always does.”
“You obviously weren’t there while we were redoing the bakery,” Chris muttered, watching with a smirk as Scott laughed quietly at his words before he left the small, thankfully peaceful home, shutting the front door behind him silently.
Chris hadn’t even realized just how hungry he was, his stomach growling loudly at his lack of food from the day, it instead being tied in knots. But now that Ellie had come and helped relax his whole body, he found himself reaching for the uneaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich he had made for Hazel, taking a bite as he walked back to the living room. His girls were still on the couch, Ellie just gazing down at Hazel and pushing some of her curls off of her forehead while she slept soundly.
He couldn’t help but feel so full of emotions, his body exhausted from what the day had held so far but when he saw that soft smile of Ellie’s shining back at him, it felt like the weights that were laid on his shoulders simply fell right off. Chris silently shuffled over to the couch, sitting down as he kept biting into the sandwich while he slunk down on the cushions, his head resting against the back while he let out a long breath. It stayed completely silent in that room as he felt a warm hand rub along his shoulder, causing him to glance over at Ellie who was smiling brightly before tugging at his shirt, wordlessly urging him to come over where he rested his head on her shoulder.
She surprised him in more ways than one when she rested her cheek against his forehead then whispered, “You're a great dad, Chris.”
And although in that moment, he was feeling anything but a great dad, he knew that Ellie wasn’t one to say things she didn’t mean and that faith in him was enough to give his anxious thoughts a rest. He turned his head to kiss her cheek, communicating all he needed to in that one action and for the first time since hearing that Ashlee was going to move, he had a glimmer of hope that just maybe everything would be alright.
A/N: Not gonna lie, that entire last sequence with Scott, Hazel, Chris, and Ellie is one of our favorite scenes ever. We love them and feel for them all so much, but we also adore the fact that Scott pushed Chris to even ask Ellie out in the first place, and now here she is comforting Hazel!
We can't wait to hear your thoughts! We are in the homestretch now for Chellie... they'll wrap up right before the holidays. We have some big plans not only for them, but for Sam and Nat's stories as well that we can't wait for you to read soon!

2 am
Your eyelids felt heavy as you finally pulled up outside the house. You let out a long sigh as you dragged your hands down your face before glancing at the time.
It was well past 2 am.
Glancing back up at the house you could see no lights were on. You had texted Chris the code to tell him it was going to be a late one so he no doubt had gone to bed hours ago. There was nothing you wanted more than to climb into bed and snuggle up next to him, if Dodger had left you any space that is.
Even though you were exhausted you remained sat in your car for another couple of minutes just gathering the energy to move. It had been an exhausting day, not just physically but emotionally too.
Eventually, you did manage to bring yourself to climb out of the car and head inside. You made sure you were as quiet as possible as you closed the door, took off your shoes and jacket. You didn’t want to accidentally wake Chris.
Even though you didn’t have much of an appetite you knew you needed to have something to eat. The last proper meal you had was lunch and that was over twelve hours ago. You also knew you’d just wake up hungry again in a couple hours if you didn’t and you really wanted to sleep for hours after today.
Walking into the living room you flicked on the light only to be startled by Chris startling awake from his spot on the couch. You clutched your chest as you tried to get your breathing back under control.
“Chris what the hell? You scared the shit out of me!” You complained as your heart rate finally returned to normal.
“Sorry,” he said rubbing the sleep from his eyes “I didn’t mean to scare you, or fall asleep, I was trying to stay awake until you got home” he explained.
“Why? I texted to say I’d be home late so you didn’t need to stay up” you told him, pulling out your phone to double-check you’d actually sent the code.
“I know” Chris said pushing himself up from the couch and walking over to you “I also knew tonight was gonna be a hard night and I didn’t like the idea of you getting home and being alone” he explained placing his hands on your arms.
You instantly softened hearing his reason, stepping into his embrace, burying your head in his chest as you let out a shaky breath. Chris instantly wrapped his arm around you pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head.
“Wanna talk about it?” He asked softly, rubbing your soothingly.
“Not yet, I think I’m still processing it all, I just wanna sleep but I should eat first” you sighed pulling away enough to look up at him.
“Okay, I saved you a plate so I’ll go warm it up, make yourself comfortable” Chris smiled softly, nodding to the couch.
“Not too comfortable otherwise I’ll be asleep before you even get into the kitchen” you pointed out.
Chris lets out a small snort of laughter “Okay make yourself uncomfortable” he chuckled.
You give him a tired smile as you sit down on the couch, sitting on the edge as you knew that if you sat too far back sleep would be too inviting. Thankfully it wasn’t long until Chris returned with a plateful of food for you, and a smaller plate for himself.
The two of you sat in comfortable silence as you ate. Once you were finished you set your plate down on the coffee table and let out a long sigh.
“We found the body,” you told Chris.
You heard him let out a long sigh as he put his hand on the small of your back. He didn’t say anything though, he knew to just give you time to talk it all through.
“We still have to confirm it's her because there was a lot of decay but she was in the exact spot he said she was” You continued rubbing your hand over your forehead “I just… I feel so sorry for the families…. Both of them… one lost their daughter and the other has just found out their son isn’t who they thought he was”
Chris let out another sigh as he shifted closer to you, wrapping his arm around you and pulling you closer into his side. He knew exactly where your mind was going, it hadn’t been that long since you found out your own father wasn’t who you thought he was.
You let out a shuddering sigh as you wiped away the stray tears that fell “Sorry” you muttered.
“Hey, hey, hey,” Chris said shaking his head “You have nothing to apologise for”
“I shouldn’t be thinking of him though” you pointed out looking up at him.
“It's okay, it’s natural and you always will it’ll just be easier to move on” Chris reassured you “And I know it sucks and it hurts but it means you understand what they’re going through and feeling and you’ll be able to provide them the correct support”
You sighed nodding your head “Yeah you’re right, thank you” you say looking up at him.
Chris gave you a soft smile “It’s nothing, now let's get you up to bed, you deserve it” he said as he pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead.
“I don’t think I have the energy to stand” you admitted making Chris chuckle.
“Don’t you worry about that” he said with a lopsided smile before he stood up, hooked his arms around you and lifted you into his arms.
You let out a squeak of surprise before quickly snuggling into his arms. You smiled up at him forever grateful that you had him in your life to look after you after tough shifts, providing you a safe space that you never had before. He hadn’t even made it all the way upstairs before you fell asleep in his arms.

Burning Up, Chapter 1
Word Count:  1.3k
Warnings: sexual tension, flirting, nothing major.
Tumblr media
“Oh my god, it’s horrible in here!”
“Seriously,” you agreed, “I can barely see two feet in front of me…who’s in charge of the fucking smoke machine?”
“Ken?”
“Girl I can barely see!”
“Maybe it was supposed to be Eric?”
“Never again,” you giggled, drinking from your plastic, red solo cup, “whoever it was, can we just agree on that?   Veto any smoke machines at the party ever again.”
“Oh yeah!”
“Definitely.”
You and your two best friends giggled, leaning against one another.  Down the hall you could see the smoke machine going off still, and you leaned towards the window just as a large set of hands did, “Oh, I got it…no worries…I can barely breathe in here!  But I wouldn’t object if you wanted to turn the machine off!”
“Asphyxiation is a real problem with these smoke machines in small, enclosed spaces,” the guy chuckled, his larger wingspan allowing him to slide the window open a lot easier than you.  You dropped your drink behind the couch as you fell forward, having missed he window, but the man caught you before you could hurt yourself, “you okay ma’am?”
“Ma’am,” you giggled, unable to comprehend the danger that the large mountainous man saved you from, “you say that like I’m older than you…like I’m some old lady you have to help across the street.”
“You definitely don’t look like an old lady,” he offered, his gorgeous cerulean eyes traveling down your body.  You felt a blush rising to your cheeks as he smirked, his tongue running over his bottom lip, “sexy school girl…definitely steps in the different direction.”
Suddenly, your skirt felt too short under his gaze.  Your top felt like it wasn’t covering enough cleavage and like it was almost see through.  And you both felt too uncovered, and not bare enough around him.  Your throat went dry as you went to speak, and your lips parted once more, leaving you looking like a gaping fish.
“(Y/N), are you going to introduce us to your new hot firefighter friend?”
“(Y/N).”
The way he said your name made a shiver run down your spine.  Your thighs clenched together as a whimper passed through your lips.  It sounded like a prayer and a curse the way that he called to you, and you wanted to hear his sultry husky voice even more.
“CURTIS!”
The man’s head turned, and you whimpered again, having lost his attention.  Your inner self repeated his name, twisting and turning it into a moan in your head as some less than savory thoughts played up just how you could play with the sexy fireman’s hose.
“All good, Storm!” he said in a husky, authoritative tone.  A third whimper drew itself from your lips, and his attention turned back towards you.  He looked torn between lust and concern, “are you okay miss?”
You nodded; the words still not able to make it from your brain past your lips.  He gave you a soft smile and you felt yourself wanting to just melt into a puddle in front of him.  The only thing that you could think of was that you were embarrassed over how you were just melting around the giant of a man.
And that’s when you noticed just how large he was against you.  You were only 5’3”, and he had to be easily a foot taller than you.  The costume was hugging his frame, exclusively hugging every ridge and muscle in his arms and thick thighs.  Your hands went in front of yourself, and you started fiddling with the hem of your skirt.
“(Y/N)!”
“S-sorry!” you began, finally finding your words as your friend snapped her hands in front of you, “i-I don’t even-I-I’m (Y/N)!”
“(Y/N)!” he repeated gently with a nod, “nice to meet you, Miss.”
“And you’re-“ your friend began, waiting for him to respond.
“Absolutely fucking gorgeous!”
Your eyes went wide as your inner monologue failed you.  Your friends began giggling once more as the smile turned even bigger on the large man.
“Curtis!”
Your attention was pulled as another man appeared behind you.  He was shorter than his friend, and not nearly as large, but he was just as attractive, and he wore a matching costume.
“Got the smoke machine, no thanks to you, Everett!”
“Oh,” the man replied shortly, his attention falling back to his friend with an apologetic look, “yeah…sorry Johnny…I-“
“Got caught up with a couple of schoolgirl hotties!” Johnny teased, looking at how you and your friends were dressed in similar white shirts and short plaid skirts, “can’t say I blame ya…but Cap is on our ass to get out of here…you know how many Halloween calls there are.”
“Wait…you’re real firefighters?”
“No way!” you commented, looking directly at the larger man as your mind failed to play catch up with your mouth yet again, “there’s no way some gorgeous hunk of man like you is actually a fireman.  You’re the reason women fantasize of them…but you can’t be a real fireman!”
His friend chuckled, as Curtis turned bright pink.
“He is a gorgeous hunk of man, isn’t he?” ‘Johnny’ teased, looking at the man and shooting him a wink, “ya really interested in him, huh gorgeous?”
“What girl wouldn’t be?”
Curtis blushed an even darker shade of pink, until his cheeks were nearly red.
“You should give her your number then, Curtis,” Johnny teased, “did you ladies know that my friend here is single?  And on Halloween!”
“So is (Y/N),” your friend giggled, “(Y/N), you should give Curtis your number!”
“CURTIS!  JOHNNY!  Cap said clear out!”
“Okay, if this is some little game you and your friends have going on-“
“Oh sweetheart, we’re real firefighters,” Johnny teased, “sure Curtis here would love to give you a tour of the station…show you the pole he slides down…show you the firehouse!”
“Alright, Storm…that’s enough.”
“Oh, come on, it’s all in good fun, Curtis!”
“Give me your phone!”
Curtis looked at you, surprised that you were really going to give him your number, “wh-what?”
“Your phone…” you said again, “your cute…and your friend is trying really hard when he doesn’t have to…I was into you when you made me drop my drink, firefighter.”
He smiled, licking his lips as he pulled his phone from his pocket.  Johnny smiled at him and tapped him on the shoulder, “I’ll tell cap you’re getting the other rooms ventilated.  Just come out when you’re good, okay?”
“Yeah…” he smiled, watching as you typed your number in.  Johnny disappeared out of the apartment, and you handed the phone back to him, “you should go outside and get some clean air…it’s pretty bad in here.”
“Yes sir,” you teased playfully.  He gave you a look that made your thighs clench together again and your friends began pulling you out of the room and towards the entrance, “guys what the hell?”
“(Y/N) I don’t think he was faking it!” your friend pointed out, when she saw the large fire truck just outside.  Your mouth went dry once again and your eyes widened.  You looked back, but he had disappeared into the crowd, “girl I think he might really be a firefighter.”
“He lit a fire somewhere!” your other friend teased, “I saw how he was making you weak in the knees.”
“More like, soaking her panties!”
“GUYS!”
“Ladies!  Good to see that you made it outside.” his friend Johnny smirked as he talked to a few more firefighters outside with the owner of the apartment.  You felt a blush rising to your cheeks and you looked away from him.   A few minutes later as more and more people cleared out of the house, it was evident that it was not just some pickup game and that they were the real thing.
And your blush got darker when you saw Curtis coming out of the apartment last, leaving the door open behind him.  He locked eyes with you as he met up with the other firefighters and they started towards the truck.  And when he shot you a final wink, you swore that was the moment you knew you were in love with him.

“Daddy, when are you coming back?” Hazel’s small voice asked. Ellie watched the way Hazel’s little hand rubbed over the soft material of the octopus stuffed animal in her arms as she waited for Chris’ answer, Dodger circling around the pair as he sniffed.
She saw Chris give her a look and finish pulling on his sneakers before he came to kneel down in front of his little daughter. Today was a day Chris had been dreading for the past week. He was meeting with Ashlee to go over more of the details of her moving and all that it would entail for both of them, but mostly Hazel. He had kept hoping that somehow Ashlee would change her mind and stay, but having this meeting made it more final in his mind.
He still hadn’t told Hazel, wanting to know details before he sat her down but it left him with what he was going to do with her while he went to Ashlee’s house. When he had brought it up, Ellie had eagerly offered to watch her, loving to spend any time she could with the little girl she loved so dearly which is where they all were now with Chris dropping off the curly headed Hazel.
Ellie knew that Hazel was comfortable with her, the two of them spending a lot of time together, but she knew this was different. Chris was leaving her with Ellie at her home and neither were surprised that the curly headed girl might feel a little nervous.
“Probably by dinner time, Hazelnut," he assured her, running a hand over her hair.
“Can you come back after dinner?” Both of them were surprised at her innocent question. “I want to stay with my Ellie jelly.”
“What? Does my Hazel Bo Basil not want me to come pick her up?” Chris teased with wide sparkling eyes, reaching out to tickle her sides, making the tiny girl squeal and squirm in his arms. “You’re just ready to ditch me that quickly for Ellie?”
Ellie couldn’t help but smile at the scene, watching the two with their faces scrunched up in laughter as Chris kept tickling her until she could hardly breathe. It almost felt painful, knowing that there was so much going on that Hazel was still completely unaware of and all of that weighing so heavily on Chris, but seeing the two of them bursting with laughter felt so good to get to see.
She knew that this wouldn’t be an easy day for Chris. He was meeting Ashlee to go over all the logistics now that Ashlee was officially moving. Ellie had happily offered to take Hazel, planning a special afternoon for them, knowing that it would also help take a load off of Chris’ mind to know that Hazel would be having fun.
“Alright, well you be good for Ellie, okay, Basil?” Chris eventually spoke, his big hands on her tiny arms that he rubbed gently. “I’ll be back around dinnertime.”
“Or I could have a sleepover here…” She suggested, making Chris’ eyebrow raise in amusement.
“How about you and I make a special dinner so we could all eat together when your daddy is done?” Ellie suggested, wanting to take one more responsibility off of Chris’ plate for the day as well as selfishly just wanting to be able to spend more time with the both of them.
Hazel’s eyes lit up as she asked, “Can we make cookies for dessert?”
“How about a big cake with lots and lots of frosting?” Ellie suggested with a smile, knowing that would immediately win her over and made Hazel erupt with cheers while she bounced on the balls of her feet.
Ellie then took a moment to kneel down next to Chris, telling Hazel that she had a special movie for them to watch and had brought out all of her extra pillows so they could pile them up on the couch and get comfortable. After Hazel got to hug Chris goodbye, Ellie suggested she go set up all her stuffed animals that she brought in the living room so they could watch the movie too, causing the curly headed girl to go running into the other room with her backpack in hand.
The moment allowed Ellie to wrap her arms around Chris once they both stood up, feeling some of the tension in his shoulders melt away as she hugged him tightly. Ellie could hear him let out a long sigh, practically melting his large frame into hers, just drinking in her comfort before eventually reluctantly pulling away.
“Hey,” Ellie started, reaching a hand up to rest on his bearded cheek, looking into those beautiful blue eyes as she told him firmly, “It’s going to be okay. Just try to be calm and then come back here to me and Hazel when you’re done.”
“I love you so much, Elles," he breathed, leaning in to bury his face in the crook of her neck. “I don’t know how I’d be getting through this without you.”
“Well luckily," she stopped to lift his head up so that she could lean in to press a long kiss to his lips before finishing, “You don’t have to worry about that. I’m right here for you.”
Chris just stayed there for a long moment, practically engulfing her frame with his, holding her tight as he just breathed in her scent. Ellie could have stayed there all night just holding him but eventually she let go of his frame so he could head out the door, leaving just her and Hazel together.
“Alright Hazie, want to watch a movie?” Ellie asked, clapping her hands as she walked back into the living room where the little girl was busy arranging her stuffed animals on the couch.
“Can we watch Elsa?” Hazel asked, clutching the little lizard stuffed animal in her tight grip.
“Actually,” The blonde started, plopping down on the couch next to Hazel, running a hand through her curly hair before telling her, “I wanted to show you a movie I loved when I was younger and I think you might like it too. It’s called The Princess Diaries. Do you want to see it?”
She smiled when Hazel eagerly nodded her head, but it wasn’t until she started playing the movie that feelings inside of Ellie really started stirring. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for Hazel to scoot closer and closer to Ellie, her little body ending up curled against Ellie’s side with one of her little hands wrapped around Ellie’s waist. Ellie leaned down to kiss the top of her head before bringing a hand to rest on her back.
It was moments like this that made Ellie feel like she had finally found what she was looking for in life. Only a year ago she was in New York, coming home from a day at the hospital every day in tears, not knowing how she could possibly get through another day. But now? Now here she was being loved so deeply by a man with a heart of gold and getting to watch a movie with his sweet daughter that she had come to love with her whole heart. She realized that all the time what she was missing were moments like this. This is what meant the world to Ellie and she knew without a doubt that she wanted it with Chris and Hazel.
It felt so good to be able to just spend time with Hazel, getting to enjoy the different dynamic of only having the two of them. They had so much fun that neither hardly noticed when Chris came walking back into the house a few hours later, so much obvious tension on his face that seemed to melt away the moment that he could see both of them and seeing that look made Ellie know, without a doubt, that this was going to be forever.
Tumblr media
“Daddy, look how much money I made!” Hazel eagerly unzipped her little sea turtle pouch to show off the wrinkled dollar bills and loose coins shoved into it.
“Wow, looks like you’re quite the entrepreneur,” Chris smiled at her, leaning down to kiss the top of her head before he knelt down on the grass, an elbow leaning against the wooden stand while he asked, “What are you going to buy with all that money?”
“Probably a bike… or a unicorn," she shrugged as she weighed her options.
A loud laugh poured out of Chris as he tipped his head back, a hand slapping to his chest before he told her, “I think you might need to sell a few more cups of lemonade for either of those, Basil.”
“Well I’m pretty sure she’s made more on tips than she has in actual sales,” Ellie spoke up from where she was sitting next to the small girl who was swinging her feet, “Hazie’s quite the customer service expert… I think I’m going to need to hire her to run the bakery for me soon.”
Ellie saw Hazel’s eyes light up as she exclaimed,“I would be good at frosting the cupcakes!”
“I have a feeling you’d eat all the frosting before it made it to the cupcakes,” Chris muttered with amusement as he reached out to tuck some of Hazel’s curls behind her ear.
“Ellie says you have to taste it first to make sure it’s good!”
She saw the way Chris looked over at her, that smirk that drove her wild appearing on his lips as he held up a hand in defense, “Well I guess we can’t question Ellie, now can we?”
Ellie wrapped an arm around Hazel, giving her a little squeeze before she hopped up to grab one of the paper cups and precariously pour a glass for Chris. The tall firefighter had barely got a sip when their moment was interrupted by a loud voice calling out from the porch of the bakery.
“Oh good, Chris is here. Now we don’t have to carry those heavy boxes upstairs,” Brooke called out, not so subtly hinting at what she wanted.
“Is that all I’m good to you for, Brooke? Just getting you out of work,” Chris called back with an eyebrow raised.
They both watched the dark skinned beauty shrug before stating, “Yeah basically.”
“Brookie, do you want to come be Hazel’s assistant for a few minutes and I’ll show Chris where the boxes go?” Ellie suggested, standing to her feet and motioning to the little folding chair she had been sitting in next to Hazel.
When Brooke happily agreed and came down to sit by Hazel, the couple shuffled inside the bakery, Ellie taking a moment to say hi to the few regular customers spread out amongst the tables before she led Chris to where the large cardboard box was sitting by the register. He picked it up with ease and followed Ellie up the back stairs, heading through the break room and into her small office where she instructed him to drop it.
Ellie was surprised when she saw Chris then move to rest against her desk, half sitting on it as he crossed his arms. It was obvious so many thoughts were swirling in his mind and Ellie was so thankful to have the opportunity to get to talk with him. She moved closer, leaning in to kiss his prickly bearded cheek while rubbing a hand on his thick arm, helping to ease the tension in his body.
“So how did everything go today?”
“Okay I guess…” He motioned vaguely with his hand, “I think it’s finally sinking in that Ashlee is really moving.”
“Does she have an official moving date?”
Chris nodded, lifting his face to meet his blue eyes with hers, “Yeah she’s moving in a month.”
“That early? I thought she was going to stay through August when Hazel starts school?” Ellie tipped her head in confusion, knowing that had been the plan before.
“Not now. Her boss wants her there by the end of July so she’s going sooner.” A long sigh fell from his lips. It was obvious to Ellie that he was struggling with reality, running a hand through his hair as he realized aloud, “Which means we have to tell Hazel soon… God, I’m dreading that.”
“Try not to worry about it right now,” Ellie tried to encourage, stepping straight in front of him as she rubbed her hands on each of his arms. “I think the bigger problem is telling Hazel that she can’t buy a bike or a unicorn with twenty-four dollars.”
She got a small chuckle out of him, loving to see that smile if only for a moment as he replied, “That’s true, that is going to be the biggest crisis of the day.”
It was quiet for a long moment, the only sounds being the muffled voices downstairs and the clanging of the baking happening in the kitchen below. Ellie kept slowly rubbing her hands up and down his arms, knowing he was grappling with all of these feelings that were thrust on him so abruptly with Ashlee’s decision. It wasn’t a secret that Ellie had been worried about him, wanting to do anything she could to take the burden off of him and she felt a little successful each time she felt him relax in her arms.
“How are you feeling about all of this, honey?”
“I think I’m just… sad. I mean, I just didn’t want things to be this way," he admitted slowly. “I understand that Ashlee has to do what she wants with her life but I just don’t think it’s the right thing. It’s just another example of how we’ve always been on a different page.”
“I know it’s not easy when you both think so differently, but just remember that you both love Hazel." She tried to encourage the common thread between the two parents.
Chris just shook his head, his chin tipping down as he muttered, “I still don’t understand how you can do that.”
“Do what?”
“Make me feel like everything’s going to be okay," he lifted his face to offer her the softest little smile, “Although I don’t understand how you do a lot of the things that you do.”
“You’re just saying that so you can get a piece of that fresh cherry pie downstairs,” Ellie teased him before dropping her hands and turning to head for the door.
“Hey c’mere,” Chris caught her before she got too far, gently tugging on her arm to bring her back and pull her right up against his chest, both of his arms wrapping around her waist firmly, “I’m being serious, Elles. Going through all of this has really made me do a lot of thinking.”
“About us or about Hazel?”
“All of us," he admitted honestly as he gazed down at her beautiful face. “Marrying Ashlee was always a mistake. Neither of us should have done that. I thought that I was doing the right thing by proposing and I know she thought she was doing the right thing by saying yes but we both knew it wasn’t right. We never loved each other, or at least not in the right way that is.”
She just watched him as the emotions crossed his face, Chris opening and closing his mouth a few times before he finally found the words, “Then, after everything fell apart I just tried so hard to be a good dad for Hazel. I tried to give her a good home and try to make up for the mistakes I’d made. I just threw myself into parenting and working and had been splitting my week between the two until you showed up.”
“And started filling your daughter with sugar,” Ellie’s nose crinkled up with her soft laughter.
“Well that’s true, I probably shouldn’t thank you for that," he teasingly winked at her.  “But I just had completely given up on even being in touch with what I wanted and now things are just… so different. Going through all of this with Ashlee has made me realize even more how much this life that I have right now is what I want forever. You’re truly the girl I dreamed of having and never thought I’d even have the chance to get.”
“That goes both ways,” Ellie reminded him as she rubbed a hand along the soft tee shirt covering his chest, “You and Hazel are everything I didn’t know that I needed. I love you both more than anything.”
“We love you too, and I just want you to know, Ellie, that I’m going to ask you to marry me," his voice was so gentle, “I want to give it a little more time because I don’t want to throw another change into Hazel’s life right now, but know that my intention isn’t anywhere else. I want to be with you forever.”
And as Ellie looked into his emotional eyes through her vision that was blurred with tears, she could see just how honest every single one of those words were. She knew that he meant it wholeheartedly and that this little family of theirs was everything they both needed.

______
“Bye Eds!” (Y/n) called out as Eddie stepped out the back of the uber car they were squeezed in. “Get home safe, and text me when you’re home.” Eddie says as he pointed out a finger to his sister. “I promise.” She spoke as Eddie gave her hand a little squeeze. “Bye guys” and with that, Eddie closed the door he was holding open.
Now there were two of them. Evan and (Y/n) were sitting in the back of the uber car. They had drunk way too much to drive themselves home safe and sound.
Eddie and the team were having drinks at their standard firefighter bar, and Eddie invited his little sister to meet the team. He talked constantly about his little sister, and how she was his best friend. So they told Eddie to invite his sister to the bar. Normally, she wouldn’t do it, she wasn’t a fan of social events, but when Eddie begged her to come she couldn’t say no.
“I really should stop drinking this much, I never know what my limit is.” Evan spoke as he pressed his palms against his head. (Y/n) just laughed at what Evan just said. And continued staring outside. She liked the way Evan talked so passionately about his work and the team he worked with. From the stories she had heard tonight, she could tell that he was an impulsive and compassionate person.
(Y/n) lived about 5 minutes from her brother’s house, she was next on the drop off list. The five minute drive was silent, but not awkward.
When the car pulled to a stop, (Y/n) unbuckled her seatbelt and her eyes fell on those ocean blue eyes. “Can I walk with you?” Evan’s soft, low voice asked when he saw her reaching for the door handle. “Sure” she smiled as her eyes met Evan’s.
They both got out of the car, Evan waited a second for (Y/n) to walk next to him as they made their way towards the apartment building (Y/n) lived in.
“This is me” she said as she got out her keys from her little bag she had with her. Evan leaned with the left side of his body against the concrete wall of the hallway. She had a lot of keys on her keychain. (Y/n)’s hands fumbled for the right key to open her front door, but she accidentally dropped her keys to the ground. “Shit” she mumbled as she squatted down to grab the keys from the floor. She was clumsy, but Evan thought it was adorable. He had heard enough stories from Eddie to know what she would be like, and clumsiness was one of those things.
“I’m sorry-” she felt so stupid that it was taking her so long to open the door. But when she got back up from grabbing the keys from the ground, her breath was taken away by Evan. Evan crashed his lips against hers, as he slightly pressed two fingers underneath her jawline, and softly pushed it up to meet his height.
She moved one of her hands to the back of his neck and let her fingers get tangled on the short curls at the back of his head. Evan’s hand slid down to her lower back as he pressed her closer to his body.
“I actually wanted to ask if you wanted to come inside.” (Y/n) whispered when their lips parted and she could still feel Evan’s warm breath flowing against her skin. Evan smiled at her reaction. “I already thought you didn’t want this night to end.”
Evan pulled back his hand from her lower back as she turned to the door, to finally open it. When she finally found the right key to open her apartment door, she slid it in and turned the key to unlock it.
She took his hand, stepped inside and Evan followed her with a small smile on his face, and he closed the door behind him. Evan stepped closer to her as he placed his hand on her cheek. And pressed his lips against hers once again.
“W-we really shouldn’t be doing this” She pulled back her head, and shook it as she pushed Evan away from her. “This feels.. wrong.” she continued after he gave her a confused look.
She wanted him too, just as much as Evan wanted her. Why was she suddenly so scared?
Evan’s left hand was still resting on her waist. “I mean, nobody has to know. It’s not like we’re married after this.” Evan took a step closer, trying to close the distance between the two of them which (Y/n) created. ”Let’s just.. keep things casual.” he continued his proposal.
Her eyes switched every few seconds from his eyes to his lips, god she felt like a teenager again. Her stomach filled with jitters. With the second Evan’s lips came closer, it was almost like he tried to seduce her. Barely an inch away, he stopped. Their noses were almost touching, she could feel his warm breath floating over her lips.
Her breathing became shallow. “You’re right. Screw it.” she panted as she laid her hands on either side of his jacket and pulled him close.
Evan nudged (Y/n) backwards until her back hit the wall and he pressed his body against hers like he wanted to merge into her. He pinned his other hand next to her head against the wall.
She let her hands slide to the back of his neck as Evan’s hands slipped from her waistline down to her bum. He sends kisses down her neck, which send shivers down (Y/n)’s spine.
His hands wandered down to the back of her thighs, he lifted her up until she got the memo and secured her legs around his hips. (Y/n)’s arms gripped his shoulders even tighter when she felt his lips to the side of her neck, starting to leave a mark.
“Where’s your bedroom actually?” his voice asked when he realized he didn’t know which way to go. (Y/n) let out a laugh in the crook of his neck, typically Evan. His skin tickled at the laughs he received. “Down the hall on the right”
“Good. Now where were we?”
_______
“Eddie, you’ve got to be kidding me. You have got to stop calling me. I’m literally three minutes out.” (Y/n) spoke when she tapped on the green coloured phone icon on her car kit. Eddie had called her over three times already today, he just wanted to make sure she was okay and that she was coming down to LA with her son.
(Y/n) was Eddie’s favorite sister, They had a three years age difference, and two older sisters. But the bond between Eddie and (Y/n) was different.
“I know. I’m sorry, just wanted to make sure you’d actually show up.” Eddie answered her as he laughed. (Y/n) shook her head at Eddie’s reaction, he knew her too well. When they were younger, sometimes she would say she would come to a party or just hang out with friends. But when the time would come, she would cancel her plans.
Now that she was older, she actually managed to push herself more and more out of her comfort zone. Yes, she was sometimes still afraid of the unknown, but it was less than it used to be. She would still feel awkward in situations with new people, but she knew how much it meant to Eddie and Chris if they came down to LA.
The drive wasn’t very long, maybe two hours tops. But it was a lot with a three-month- old in the backseat. (Y/n)’s eyes shot to her rear view mirror and a smile was projected on her face when she saw her son’s eyes fluttering around the car, safe and sound in his car seat.
“So you’re almost here?” Eddie asked for confirmation. (Y/n) smiled as she shook her head. “Yes! I’m on my way.” she sighed as she focussed on the Los Angeles traffic right in front of her. “Oh come on!” she yelled at the car who was in front of her, driving with the speed of a snail as she pushed the horn. “You seriously need to work on those anger issues.” (Y/n) could hear her brother laugh through the phone. “It’s called road rage. I seriously don't know how you do this every single day.” she sighed. Her eyes fluttered towards the rearview mirror once again when Archie’s cries sounded through the car.
“I’m sorry for calling this much. Chris is so excited to see you and Archie again, he has been talking constantly about the two of you.” Eddie said, which put a smile on (Y/n)’s face. “It’s okay, but Eds, I have to go now. I’ll see you in a bit, okay?” She wanted to cut off the phone call as soon as possible. “Alright, see you soon” Eddie says, and she pressed the red button to disconnect their call.
“It’s okay Archie, It will only take a few minutes.” (Y/n) tries to calm down her son with the sound of her voice. He was probably hungry, he’d always get grumpy if he got his food a few minutes later than usual. “For fuck sake.” she cursed as the line of cars she was in stepped on their brakes. The cries of Archie became louder and louder.
(Y/n) tried her best to stay focussed on the road. But when the crying suddenly stopped, she looked in the mirror to see what was happening. Did he fall asleep that fast again? A shiver rolled down her spine, her eyes scanned the face of the three month boy as she looked in the baby mirror.
Panic built up inside her chest when she saw her son crying, but he was turning red.
“No no no no” this was not happening. She quickly turned her car to the right as she parked it on the sidewalk. (Y/n) unbuckled her seatbelt, took the key out of the contact and shoved her door open. She opened the back door where her son was seated in the small car seat as she panicked and started examining him.
Was he choking? What was he choking on? “Baby what’s happening?!” (Y/n) spoke frustrated when she couldn’t remember or find anything he could be choking on. She didn’t know what to do.
(Y/n) was literally two streets away from the firehouse where Christopher’s birthday party was. She knew Chris would get upset if she came in screaming for help. But this was the best option she had. The Los Angeles traffic wasn’t moving and she couldn't just drive over the sidewalk to get her kid there.
She didn’t have time to think, or she already unbuckled Archie from his little car seat and pressed him against her body. With her right foot she kicked the car door closed and she started running.
With her left hand she pressed Archie’s head against her shoulder so his head wouldn’t bump against her body so he wouldn't hurt himself. Her right hand was placed on his lower back, also pressing him against her body. She could feel Archie’s body trying to gasp for air, his little body was shocking against hers.
Tears were running down her face as she tried to run as fast as her legs could carry her.
Oxygen was burning down her airways as she was sprinting down the pavement, she desperately wanted to soothe Archie, telling him that they were getting the help he needed. But she had to save her air, to give her more energy to run.
As soon as she ran through the big red giant garage doors, which were opened. She screamed for help with the last bit of air she had left. “Please help me!” she cries as her eyes scanned the firehouse, looking for someone to help her out.
“(Y/n)? What’s wrong?” her brother’s voice called out as he rushed down the stairs with a few colleagues following him.
“H-he can’t breathe” she stuttered, desperately gasping for air.
Eddie took over his nephew from his sister’s hands and laid him down to the floor. Archie’s lips were turning blue. (Y/n) glanced at her son, but when she saw those blue lips. A feeling of guilt and failure rushed through her stomach. How could this happen? What was happening to her child? “Pulse is low” Eddie concluded as he pressed his fingers to the neck of his nephew.
Frustrated, she let her hand go through her hair, pulling the strands which were lost, to the back of her head. She was looking at her brother and colleagues, trying to figure out what was happening to her child. She quietly sobs, as she desperately tries to calm down her breathing.
Hen took place on the other side of Archie. The eyes of the three months old started to turn to the back of his head and loses consciousness. “Sounds like a breath holding spell” Eddie looked at Hen to get her opinion on it.
They couldn’t do anything about it, they couldn’t help Archie with breathing. “W-what are you doing? Why aren’t you helping him?” (Y/n) asked when Eddie and Hen stopped examining her son.
Eddie looked at Hen, silently asking if she could keep an eye on Archie so he could explain to his sister what was going on. Hen nodded, at his silent question as she kept her eyes on the baby.
Eddie stood up straight and clicked his spine back into place as he slowly walked towards his sister who was still in panic mode. “It’s okay” Eddie spoke as he came closer and put his hands on both her upper arms and started running them up and down to try and comfort her.
“It’s a breath holding spell, that’s what is happening.” Eddie says. “I-I don’t understand” she cries as she tries to get her breathing under control.
“A breath holding spell is when a child holds their breath after being frustrated or angry. When they’re older, it can be on purpose to get your attention. But since Archie is only three months old, this has to be involuntary.” Eddie explains the situation to his little sister. “But why aren’t you doing anything to help him breathe?” Her hand went towards her eyes, trying to keep herself together.
“The thing is, when a child passes out they have to come back around after a few seconds, or a minute. He will start breathing on his own.” Eddie reassured her and gave her shoulder a little squeeze. A baby cry sounded through the space of the firehouse, as Archie gained consciousness again. “There you go” Hen spoke as she picked up the baby boy from the ground and let him rest in her arms.
“See. He’s going to be okay.” Eddie gave his sister a small smile, as Hen handed Archie over to (Y/n).
______
For minutes, hours, (Y/n) succeeded in avoiding Evan at the birthday party from Chris. When the most terrifying moment of her life was happening, Evan was there for Chris to keep him calm and distract him from whatever was happening down stairs.
(Y/n) tried her best to keep talking with people, and not to glance at Evan like she was hiding something from him. But whenever her eyes wandered back to Evan, he looked back at her. As if he knew she was looking at him.
“I’ll be right back.” (Y/n) told her brother as he was holding Archie in his arms, with Chris hovering over him.
(Y/n) stood up and grabbed the diaper bag as she made her way towards the kitchen. It was time for Archie to be fed.
She put the bag on the kitchen counter as she got out the powder, a small feeding bottle and a thermos flask. When she started putting the powder into the bottle, she flinched at the voice that made its way through her eardrums. She squeezed her eyes closed, she wanted to avoid this conversation so badly.
“Hey. Can we talk?” Evan quietly asks as he walks into the kitchen. “Kinda busy here.” She answered as she grabbed the thermos flask and started to pour water until she reached the right amount of water.
Evan folded his arms over one another. “Please?” He leaned his lower back against the kitchen counter as he watched her making the bottle for Archie. (Y/n) could feel the eyes burning in the back of her head, but she didn’t turn around and started mixing the texture of the bottle.
“Why didn’t you ever call me back after… that night?” Evan sighed after a moment of silence. She stopped and put down Archie’s bottle on the counter, placing it right in front of her. She leaned with her palms on the counter “I thought we agreed on keeping things casual between us. It was a one time thing, nothing more, nothing less.” She tried to keep her voice as low as possible, she didn’t want to start any drama at the moment. They were at Chris' birthday party.
“Yeah and I thought, If I had gotten you pregnant. You would tell me. Right?” Evan spoke as he turned his head to the right, trying to make eye contact with (Y/n). She stayed silent, as she squeezed her eyes shut. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” she spoke as she pressed her lips into a thin line and continued checking the temperature of the substance inside of the bottle on her wrist.
He moved to stand next to her, leaning his right hip against the kitchen counter. “Shit that’s way too hot” she mumbled as she placed a few drops of the milk onto her wrist. But when she wanted to move towards the sink, Evan grabbed her wrist to stop her from walking away from the conversation she clearly didn’t want to have.
Evan wanted to answer what (Y/n) had just told him. But when Evan realized they were kind of causing a scene, Evan kept a hold of (y/n)’s wrist and led her towards the stairs. “Where are we going?” he didn’t say anything, as he walked down the stairs. Not letting go of her wrist as he opened the locker room door and spun her inside as he closed the door behind him.
“Come on (Y/n). I’m not stupid. How old is Archie again?” Evan asked as he once again tried to make eye contact with her. (Y/n)’s eyes were stuck on the bottle she was still holding in her hand. She was too scared to look Evan in the eyes, and tell him the truth.“Three months” she whispered.
Evan’s eyes grew wide at her answer. His gut feeling was telling him the right thing. “Jesus (Y/n)” Evan’s voice sounded disappointed. “You’re unbelievable.” Evan continued as he pressed his fingers against his head, trying to process the information he just received.
“I swear Evan, I was planning on telling you.” (Y/n) said as she tried to make eye contact while Evan rubbed his forehead with his fingers. “I-I just didn’t know how” she went on.
“You’ve had nine months to tell me that you were pregnant. Hell, when were you planning on telling me? When he turned what, eighteen?” Evan was furious, his head was pounding because the truth was finally coming out.
“You know I wouldn’t do that.” her voice whispered at Evan as she started fidgeting with the bottle of Archie in her hands.
“Then why didn’t you tell me, you know I would’ve been there for you.” Evan tried to calm himself back down.
“I didn’t tell you because I was scared Evan.” She took a step closer as she tried to make eye contact again with those ocean blue eyes. “Scared of what? My reaction?” He didn’t get it. She could’ve just reached out, and they would’ve figured it out, together.
“Your opinion.” she sighed. “M-my opinion?” he stuttered, as he confused looked her back in the eye. “What if a one night stand told you she had gotten pregnant, and she actually told you she wanted to keep the baby because they told her she couldn’t have children.” she pressed her lips into a thin line.
Evan didn’t have the words to answer, so he remained silent.
“Yeah, exactly.” (Y/n) said as she didn’t get an answer. She walked around Evan towards the door and just when she wanted to open the door to leave the locker room, his voice spoke up.
“Did Eddie know? About me and you?” he suddenly asks over his shoulder. (Y/n) stopped in her tracks as she held her head down, should she tell him the truth? Since a bomb already bursted?
She turned back to Evan as she let go of the glass door. Evan spun on his heels to face her again. She bit her lower lip as she nodded. “Yes. He knows it’s yours.” she admitted. “Who else knows?” he quickly asked after that.
Her hand nervously scratched the back of her head, and a sigh fell off her lips. Her eyes told him everything he needed to know, he didn’t need any words to confirm that there were people who knew that he was the father of (Y/n)’s child.
“Who else knows (y/n)?” He repeated his question. She started picking her skin on her fingers. “Bobby? Hen? Chimney? Come on, spit it out.” Evan had to try and pull out the answer out of her.
She faced the ceiling of the locker room as she sighed once more, trying to gain every piece of confidence she had left. “Chimney and Maddie.” she spoke out. Evan’s eyes grew wide as he heard his own sister's name fall off her lips.
“That’s just.. that’s great.” Evan said as he started pacing through the locker room.
“I’m so sorry Evan.” was the only thing she could bring out. There weren’t enough words to describe the feeling she had right then and now.
When she wanted to turn away, to walk out of the door again, Evan sighed. “You know how often I wrote a text message, but never sended it to you? You know how much I've thought about you, about us. That night.” Evan confessed.
“Just know you weren’t just a one night stand to me.” (Y/n) let her hand rest against the glass door, as she waited for Evan to go on.
“I know we agreed on keeping things casual then, but god I wanted so much more. And I still do. I let you slip through my fingers then, but I’m not making that same mistake now.”
“Evan..-” she sighed, there were so many emotions going on right now. He was angry because she didn’t tell him about Archie, the pregnancy, he finally saw her again after one year, and here he was spilling his guts.
He stepped closer. “Tell me to go away. And I will go.” Evan said as he closed the distance between the two of them, their chests barely touching. She stayed silent.
She missed Evan, the way he talked, the way he would look at her like she was his drug and the way he touched her.
Evan’s fingers slightly brushed against hers. She could feel her breathing become heavy again. Their eyes connected as she looked up at the firefighter when he put a strand of hair behind her ear.
Before she could even process it, her lips crashed against his. It was like her body was moving faster than her brain. As if it had its own mind. His touch made (Y/n) want to melt right there on the spot. The way he kissed her made her feel like she was floating.
“Keeping things casual, right? You can stripe that one off of your list” Evan panted against her lips. “Shut up” she mumbled, and she pressed her lips even harder against his lips that were curled into a smile.

"Wait!" You pleaded, holding your hands in the air. Chris let out a giggle as he and Buck walked closer to you. The orange water gun in their hands ready to be fired. You couldn't hold your laughter as they cornered you further into the backyard.
It was Friday night and a massive heat wave just hit Los Angeles. Buck and Eddie just finished working overtime so you promised to take care of Christopher until the end of their shift. When the tired firefighters came home they couldn't help but notice the wholesome life hacks you tried out to help Christopher cope with the warm temperatures. One of them ofcourse, water. When Buck eyed the water guns and balloons he couldn't stop his own excitement from growing. The little kid in him awoke and was ready for the water game of his life.
"What do you think Chris? Should we let y/n go?" Buck teased, resting the water gun against his shoulder while raising his brow.
"Nooooo!" Chris laughed before he and Buck started shooting the water at you. You tried your best to stop the water with your hands but the cold liquid splashed against your side. You squeeled loudly, throwing your head to the side so the water wouldn't hit your face. After you fell completely soaked, you managed to call out for a truce.
Chris smiled widly, running over to Eddie once he noticed his dad step outside on the patio. Buck carefully walked over to you, a mischievous smirk plastered on his beautiful lips. You panted slightly, whipping the water from your face as you looked over at your cocky boyfriend. His face fell once you mirrored his expression. He noticed the dangerous sparkle in your eyes, meaning you had something planned. Before he could react, you grabbed the gun Christopher dropped and started shooting at Buck. The Buckley shrieked loudly. Then proceeded to walk over to you once the gun ran out of water. You laughed loudly, trying your best to quickly run off. You didn't came far, Buck managed to catch you by grabbing your waist and pulling you closer to his chest. You both couldn't contain the giggles passing your lips as you fell to the ground. You tiredly reached over to your boyfriend. One hand rested on his stomach as the other holded your waist after giving it a playful tickle. You noticed that the water slowly absorbed in the material of his shirt. The short sleeves hugging his biceps perfectly. 'God.' You thought, admiring your boyfriend. Before you could wonder further, your train of thought was quickly abrupted by Buck's lips pressing a soft kiss against your temple.
Chris and Eddie walked over, a wide smile on their lips as they helped you both get back up. "You're smart, Chris. Running off to stay dry." Buck praised. "But I have some bad news for you." Before Chris could react, Buck grabbed him in the air. Hugging him tightly so the water could absord against his skin. Christopher let out a cheerfull yell before hugging Buck back. Eddie smiled in content. A warm feeling took over your chest as you admired your boyfriend. You loved how good he was with kids, especially Christopher and Jee-Yun. The little play dates he would organize and the amount of effort he would put to make them smile. Buck was a perfect uncle and hopefully someday a perfect father.
"I saw you guys at the open house yesterday." Eddie admitted as if he could read your mind. His arms were crossed, pressed against his chest. "You'd make great parents." He looked over at Buck and the smile on his son's lips. "Just saying." He chuckled, throwing his hands up after noticing your wondered expression. You bited down on the inside of your cheeck, trying your best to stop yourself from getting red. Eddie smiled before walking back inside to prepare tonight's dinner. Buck managed to hear what Eddie said. His eyes gazed at yours. His stomach dancing with butterflies at the thought of seeing you as a parent. He couldn't hide the shit eating grin from forming on his lips. He tried playing it cool by putting Chris back on the ground and helping him inside to his father. You followed their action and still deep in thought took place in your friends couch.
Maybe Eddie was right. You thought. Maybe you're ready.
A few moments later Buck wandered in, taking place next to you in the couch. "Christopher is helping Eddie with dinner." He said. "But I think we should check every 5 minutes, because Eddie and cooking." He joked, secretly knowing it was true. You snickered, sinking further into the couch.
"So," Buck started, stretching his arm so you could curl closer in his side. "I heard what Eddie said." Your head perked up, gazing at your boyfriend's beautiful eyes. "What do you think?" You asked.
"I think we should think about it." Buck admitted, caressing your face with his thumb. "Maybe do some research for what works best for us. Doesn't mean we have to do it now. Just... so we can think about it and look things over."
You smiled, you couldn't expect a better answer. Starting with kids can be scary, so you praised your boyfriend for also wanting to take it slow and get informed first without jumping into things. "I'm really happy you say that." You admitted, pressing a kiss to his lips.
"A little Buckley." Buck dreamed. "I can get used to that idea."

___________
Here's a snippet from Chapter 26 of an emotionally distraught and hysterical Eddie while he's on the phone with 9-1-1.
___________
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”
“Yes I’m at 4995 S. Bedford St. and I have an adult male, 31 years of age who's unconscious and unresponsive and I need medical response.”
“Ok sir, can I get your name?”
“Eddie Diaz! I’m a firefighter and a paramedic with the 118.”
“Eddie!” Linda asks.
“Yes! Linda, I’m so glad it’s you.” He heaves past the sob lodged in the back of his throat that feels like a ping pong ball and continues. “Listen, it’s Buck… SHIT!” He stops talking because he remembers he needs to follow protocol for her recording then he tries again. “I mean you need his first and last name for the call. It’s my husband Evan Diaz and he’s also a firefighter with the—the 118.”
“Ok Eddie, I’m checking to see which RA unit is closest to that address but can you tell me what happened?”
“I—I don’t know but I came into the living room; he was swaying back and forth and I caught him before he—he hit the floor. I manually checked his vitals by doing the ABC method… I opened his airway, checked his breathing along with his circulation, then I—I got my medical bag and checked his pupillary response which is fine but his pulse, his blood pressure and his heart rate... and all of them are still low which is why I believe he might be having a bradycardia event. Linda… oh my god, whatever is happening to him is more serious than syncope because he’s still unresponsive.”
“Can you tell me how long he’s been down?”
“It’s been more than two minutes but I didn’t start counting until after I caught him so I could be one or two seconds off.”
“Ok, Eddie, our closest unit is 6 minutes away.”
He frowns and loudly asks, “Six minutes? Why?! I’m sorry please—please forgive me for being loud but I... I—I’m asking because there’s a fire station less than 4 minutes away from here.” He feels like he’s about to crawl out of his skin because the proximity of their home to the closest fire station in this area is one of the reasons why he decided to purchase it. He wanted to be close to one for Chris just in case they ever have to call emergency services.
Will the RA unit arrive in time to save Buck or will Eddie lose the love of his life? 👀

Chapter 10 - As Buck and Eddie finally begin to confront their past traumas, they realize how much they need each other to fill in the gaps of their memories.  Additionally, the universe screams at them for what appears to be the one hundredth time so Buck can realize he doesn’t have to ‘find it’ because he already ‘made it’ and Eddie’s reminded tomorrow isn’t promised and he doesn’t have to die alone if he doesn’t want to.
Chapter 11 - A “virga” or dry thunderstorm is in the forecast but once the rain starts, the thunderstorm happening outside won’t be able to match the storm brewing inside between Buck and Eddie.  It’s the universe’s final scream and when the tumultuous winds begin to blow, they’ll have one last chance to hold onto everything they’ve built over the last six years or they’ll lose it all forever.
Chapter 12 - Buck and Eddie have always shared a deep physical attraction and an emotional intimacy that’s unmatched but now that they’re in a relationship, they’re learning how to navigate the romantic intimacy they’ve been waiting for six years to explore. The love they have for each other is a once in a lifetime, soulmate, love of their lives type of love that transcends space and time.
Chapter 13 - While navigating the newness of their romantic relationship, Buck and Eddie take advantage of every moment they spend together. As their individual lives, people from their pasts, time constraints and the possibility of losing each other again make attempts to interrupt and interfere with their journey to forever, they love, care for, support and hold onto each other even tighter to withstand it all.
Chapter 14 - Buck and Eddie can see the lights at the end of the tunnels regarding the results of Buck’s Cancer Screening along with everything else they’re dealing with. But are the lights they see exits to the tunnels or are they headlights on different runaway trains that are speeding towards them in an effort to interrupt their forever?
Chapter 15 - Buck and Eddie have known they were exactly who the other one wanted in a partner since they met six years ago when they agreed to have each other’s backs. They’re in a romantic relationship, they’re both preparing to ask the other one to spend forever with them and by the end of the seventh week into their relationship, together they will plan their most important and greatest adventure for their future.
Chapter 16 - As Buck and Eddie begin to prepare for their marriage ceremony that will take place in Rome, Italy in December 2023, they start planning their first international adventure as a romantic couple. Even though Chris is still the only person they’ve told about their relationship, several people who know them have already witnessed the love they share and as the days continue, others will witness it too.
Chapter 17 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to departing Los Angeles for their international adventure, a moment in time will remind them; life is fragile, tomorrow isn’t promised and every second of everyday should be cherished because everything can change in an instant. The result of that realization will cause them to hold onto each other even more.
Chapter 18 - As Buck, Eddie and Chris prepare for family gatherings before and during the Thanksgiving holiday, the “Santa Ana Winds” start to blow and all sorts of expected and unexpected familial drama ensues.
Chapter 19 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to their wedding day, the universe begins to align everything so that some of their parent and children's relationships are strengthened while others come to an abrupt end.
Chapter 20 - With only 14 days remaining until Buck, Eddie and Chris depart Los Angeles, CA traveling to Rome, Italy, for their first family adventure, an early morning conversation about “tying up loose ends” helps Buck and Eddie realize there are still several things left unfinished on their ‘To Do’ lists. The question is will there be enough time to complete all of them?
Chapter 21 - Buck, Eddie and Chris are finalizing their ‘To Do’ Lists, double checking their itineraries and packing their suitcases in preparation for their trip to Europe so they can board their flight that departs Los Angeles, CA on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 3:25PM.
Chapter 22 - While Buck, Eddie and Chris spend the first 8 days of their European family adventure in Italy, their primary reason for going will be fulfilled as well as several others they hadn’t considered or anticipated.
Chapter 23 - As the Diaz Family continues their Italian family adventure, they’ll say, “Ciao” or hello and goodbye to a lot of things almost immediately after they become an official and legal family.
Chapter 24 - After Buck, Eddie and Chris arrive in London, England on December 24th; the Diazes immediately start preparing to spend their first family Christmas together. During their stay, each of them will hear a few choice words that will be the life raft to get them home to complete their searches to be seen and to be found.
Chapter 25 - After spending more than two weeks in Europe, Eddie, Buck and Chris are back in Los Angeles and they’re getting ready to attend Maddie and Chimney’s New Year’s Eve party. During the event, they have plans to make two surprise announcements but the question is, who’s really going to be surprised, the Diaz family or their found family at the 118?
Chapter 26 - Buck and Eddie are once again faced with their greatest fear of losing each other but this time it could be permanent and if it is, then they won’t be able to spend the rest of their lives together.
