New Recruit | Simon Riley x Masked!GN!Reader
To keep this as neutral as possible since anon did not specify the gender, this is written in 2nd POV.
There are some spanish sentences here and although I’m actually learning the language with Duolingo (lmao) I used a translator for this, I apologize if it sounds clunky. I googled how to use gender neutral forms but I’m not sure if I did it correctly sooo.
Also, this is very short because I can’t for the love of god, produce words and a correct sentence in my head at the moment.

It was already unusual for the taskforce to get a new member. Therefore it was even more unusual to get one in the middle of an important operation in another country.
It wasn't exactly convenient but when would it ever be?
Fact was that Hassan Zyani, a major of the terror organization Al Qatala escaped their grasps.
They needed to work with Mexican Special Forces to follow his tracks, so if it was one more member or two, it didn’t really matter now.
Yet it was quite a surprise when Ghost and Soap heard the news.
"Someone will join you in México, a new member of the taskforce. I wanted to introduce the lieutenant a bit later, but Chryso was in the country anyways, so I guess now is as good as ever."
Ghost listened silently to his captain on speaker phone while Soap asked the questions lingering in his head; what kind of muppet name was Chryso? And why would the soldier join them right now when they had something so important to do?
Trusting a stranger in a hostile environment wasn’t exactly an easy thing to do.
Price ignored Soap’s words deliberately and continued:
“Chryso is already known to the Los Vaqueros and Alejandro and as you're aware they know their way around in Las Almas. Be nice and protect your backs. We will talk later and I’m sure Chryso will answer any questions you have.”
Great, Ghost thought and looked at the flabbergasted Soap who stared at the phone display showing the end of the call.
“He just hung up?? What the hell... I feel like someone just told me my sister got married in secret and I have to meet her husband.”
He raised an eyebrow but the other obviously couldn’t see it behind his skull mask.
“You have a sister?”
Soap blinked.
“No, but if I had one...”
Ghost sighed. He hoped that the new addition to the team wouldn’t mess up their operation and would focus on the task at hand. Catching Hassan.
-
You startled out of your sleep when you heard your call sign.
“They’re arriving in 5, Chryso” said Felipe, the Los Vaqueros soldier who was on the look out with you in one of the abandoned shacks close to the village where intel suggested Hassan Zyani’s location.
Your last undercover mission had taken a toll on your body and you tried to make up for it by napping whenever you could. Felipe’s humming had made you drowsy and apparently your consciousness had slipped away for a bit.
A quick glance at your combat watch proved that you had slept more than an hour and you sat up straight quickly.
“Perdón, you know my last OP still got me fucked up... Did anything move?”
“No pasa nada.”
The man waved his hand dismissively and watched as you stood up and stretched your arms. He had to tilt his head slightly to look up to you. Felipe's eyes wandered over your mask and then he said:
“They’re staying put and keeping quiet.”
You breathed out and rolled your shoulder. Maybe you shouldn’t have slept in such an uncomfortable position...
You were about to meet two members of Taskforce 141 - your new team - and group up with them and the Los Vaqueros to participate in one of their missions. No chit-chat and icebreakers, just business, straight-up.
This was how work had always been with Captain John Price for the few times you had fought together, so it didn’t exactly bother you. But it was making you a bit antsy that he wouldn’t be part of the operation.
You weren’t exactly keen on entrusting your back to total strangers. Not with your... special circumstances.
Your habit of wearing a mask 24/7 often confused other people and many soldiers had treated you slightly differently due to it. Whether it was done deliberately or subconsciously, it often hampered with the beginning of your new relationships until people finally got used to it. Which usually took a while. Seen by the lack of other soldiers accompanying you and Felipe.
Strangely Price didn’t seem to react much to your mask. Maybe that was why you felt comfortable around him. He didn’t treat you any different, he had just looked at it once and then moved on.
You hadn’t told him why you were wearing it but if anyone had to know, you would probably feel most comfortable telling him.
And when you had signed the contract to work as a new member of taskforce 141 you had mulled about doing it. Possibly when you would first see him again. You had believed that it would be today.
But he wouldn’t be part of this mission, which he told you 2 days ago. Instead Lieutenant Simon Riley and Sergeant John Mactavish would cover your back.
You had heard their names before when Price talked to you about joining the taskforce but you didn’t know anything specific about them besides their names and ranks.
And Rodolfo and Alejandro didn’t let anything slip when you asked them if they knew anything about the two soldiers.
They did know more than you but based on the little smirk around Alejandro’s lips they purposely kept information from you, which annoyed you slightly.
But well, Alejandro was a colonel, furthermore the leader of Los Vaqueros and he obviously had to be informed about his allies in such a special operation.
You knew not to question him and he wouldn’t keep anything dangerous from you, he wasn’t like that that’s what you could tell based on the few days you had spent at the Las Almas base. He kept his soldiers safe, had to in the corruption-filled town.
And you would meet the other taskforce members soon anyways.
So you decided to focus on the task at hand and ignore everything else. Whether that would involve strange looks and stupid comments about your mask or not.
The Al Qatala terrorist had to be caught by all means. The files you had received told you enough about the threat he posed to basically everyone in this world. He wouldn’t escape your grasp. Not under your watch.
You strapped your black vest tighter and checked your gear.
A low hum announced the distant approach of some vehicles and Felipe looked out the window to see 3 black jeeps drive down the dirt road.
“They’re inbound.”
You nodded and followed him out of the room down the stairs.
-
"I have a feeling you'll fit right in, just like Y/N."
Ghost was still mulling over the strange comment of Rodolfo Parra, when they spotted the army checkpoint and Alejandro explained why they had to evade it and he forgot the words quickly.
However, when their convoy arrived at the other side of the river in their AO, he and Soap exited the truck and a few seconds later when he first exchanged eye contact with you, he remembered the words instantly.
You had just moved out of the shack, following a Los Vaqueros soldier. Your back was turned towards the convoy when the man told you something and he gesticulated while you checked your back pockets.
Ghost noted that the soldier talking to you was at least a head smaller than you. You were clad in back and his interest peaked when he realized that your head was covered by a hood. Oh...?
He followed Soap behind Alejandro and Rodolfo and walked up to you while the other Los Vaqueros soldiers readied their guns and spread out.
“No me gusta el hecho de que no tengamos refuerzos” he heard you say through your clenched teeth and your counterpart hummed in agreement.
Alejandro coughed and you turned to face them while he introduced you to him and Soap. Your eyes roamed over them and they lingered a bit longer on him, which made Ghost’s heart beat quicker for some reason.
“This is lieutenant Y/N L/N”, the colonel announced and the smirk on his lips suddenly made sense. He just stared and Soap did the same.
“Just call me Chryso” you said and gave Alejandro an annoyed look that the other ignored and you turned your head back to look at Ghost and you stretched out your hand.
Ghost’s voice was rougher than usual when he told you his name:
“...Simon Riley, but call me Ghost.”
He shook your hand with a firm grip. Hazel and e/c eyes met, both hidden in the shadows of a mask. He caught a glimpse of your spirit in the e/c shade and noted that the skin around your eyes was also hidden behind black makeup.
“Nice to meet you, Lieutenant.”
Fuck, he thought when he realized that he could gaze directly into your eyes without lifting or lowering his head.
And bloody fucking hell, he thought when he realized that in a very strange way he found that mask of yours attractive. Like you were mirroring him, like you two belonged together, like you were meant to be his and he was meant to be yours.
There were not many things that Ghost found immediately attractive upon meeting someone.
He considered himself to be more of a “character”-person than someone who cared about appearances first but there were some things that just drew him in...
Pretty smiles for example. Or the hint of a strong character in one’s eyes. But what really invited his immediate attraction was what Soap had called the most surprising and strangest thing ever when he accidentally spilt this piece of information during one of their long scouting sessions; when someone was just as tall as him.
There was just something about someone being his height that created a spark in his chest.
“That’s a fucking kink” Soap had said back then. Looking at you now and considering the growing feeling in his chest, the scot might have been right.
He let go of your hand before he was holding onto it for too long but he kept his eyes on you even when you had already turned towards Soap to shake his hand.
“Sergeant John Mactavish, but call me Soap.”
The sergeant shook your hand enthusiastically and grinned from ear to ear. He glanced at him and Ghost’s alarm went off in his head.
“You have pretty long legs eh? How tall exactly are you?”
You blinked and Ghost couldn’t stop himself from groaning inwardly when he saw slight confusion and annoyance in your eyes.
“Roughly 6′3 if I remember correctly.”
Soap looked at him but Ghost ignored the stare deliberately and when Alejandro told them to follow him, you immediately turned away from them and hurried to fall into the colonel’s and Rodolfo’s step.
“Oh dios, lo dijo.” Rodolfo said and laughed and Ghost cursed himself for not learning more Spanish on the way here when you groaned. He was about 99% sure this was about your interaction just now.
"¿Dijo que?" Alejandro asked, his voice now lower as they moved closer to the houses, weapons raised.
"Una de las tres cosas que Y/N odia a que le pregunte.¿’Por qué Chryso como apodo’? ¿’Por qué llevas una máscara’? y ¿’Qué tan alte eres’?”
Rodolfo muttered and while the colonel laughed quietly you only sighed.
Ghost didn’t understand what exactly was going on but based on the mocking tone Rodolfo used for his last few words, it was probably something bad. He also mentioned your call sign and he was smart enough to know that the conversation was most likely about them.
As much as it bothered him, they had already reached the stone wall so he turned his attention to the mission at hand.
“Where’s Hassan?” he asked.
“White two-story building at the back”, Alejandro replied and two seconds later they entered the gate and he didn’t have time anymore to think about your height, nor your skull mask that seemed to compliment his own and the fact that your utility straps nicely showed off your thighs.
-
But all these thoughts and much more rushed through his mind after he had helped you out of the river.
It had already been hard for him to breathe with his mask but your experience with yours had been much worse, the cloth wasn’t exactly made for missions involved with water and you - in your words “almost got waterboarded back there”.
Added to the harsh landing in the river and the bullet graze on your left arm, you weren’t exactly feeling your best and you felt exhausted for a moment, so much so that you had to drag your limbs out of the water when it was your turn.
The soldier in front of you turned around and you looked up at him from your cowering position where you had temporarily bandaged your wound.
Ghost offered you his hand and you took it.
“Thanks” you huffed and he pulled you up with more force than necessary which messed with your balance and made you take a step forward.
He could see a waterdroplet on the tip of your eyelashes and his heart stuttered when he noticed how close you two suddenly were. Your loud breathing made his ears tingle and he took a step back, though not letting go of your hand.
“You good, Chryso?”, he asked, ignoring his imagination where you were panting for a different reason. Jesus Christ, you were injured. And he hadn’t even seen your face yet.
You nodded and he let go of your, pointing at your left arm.
“I’ll bandage your arm in the car, that wrap is a sad excuse of first aid.”
You huffed in annoyance but he saw how your eyes turned into slight halfmoons again, showing him that you were actually smiling.
“Whatever, lieutenant.”
You walked past him, waving your hand in dismissal and he followed you, a small grin on his lips, definitely not sneaking a glance at that ass in those wet black cargo pants.
-
“I’m really curious... What kind of muppet name is Chryso?”
Alejandro snorted. “Y dale.”
You sighed beside Ghost while he secured the re-wrapped bandage. Soap looked at you through the front mirror.
“We had this guy in my unit, Turner, he was a huge biology nerd. When he first met me, he just said ‘Chrysocyon brachyurus’  which is the scientific name for the maned wolf in South America.”
Soap tilted his head in confusion when Alejandro laughed. “Okay...?”
The colonel tapped the steering wheel. “They have really long legs, hermano. Really long.”

I need to hear your detailed thoughts on pregnant bezz lol. It's clear it's going to be like a single dad situation bc he has no clue who the dad is. He's a Lil nervous but the academy is very nice about it. Pecco just wordlessly starts accompanying him to every doctor's appointment. Luca is making sure he gets his prenatal vitamins on time and resting his feet and cele is a little distant at first which makes bezz feel a little sad and he doesn't know what to do about it and Luca comes over to cele and tells him to not hurt bezz when he's expecting and cele feels soo guilty he would never do anything to hurt bezz or the baby but he feels insane about the whole situation and also is a little bit obsessed with bezz and his teeny growing bump anyway they make up and cele never leaves his side like they sleep together and he rubs Bezz's feet and let's Bezz hug his cold post shower body because he's burning up due to the baby. Just my silly thoughts I want your preg bezz thoughtsssssssssss
Anon you're sooo smart because all what you say IS TRUE. Cele is so weird about preg!bezz and luca need to talk with him “how you can make our pregbez being sad?” Jail for celin. Personally I am more into bez/pecco for this AU, but bezz has a harem who cares about him and his lil babybug :)
SO THANKS for waiting for my little silly thoughts about preg!bezz, he’s very important to me lmao.
I'm writing a fic (in spanish) about this snip, i don't think i wanna post it, but preg bezz is a 9k gdocs and tried to kill me
A thing about Bezz is how PRIVATE he wants to be (he fails). Like, he tried to separate his work and his personal life.
So in my timeline bezz was pregnant in Aus, and at first he had a very asymptomatic preg. Maybe he confuses the symptoms with the consequences of his broken collarbone, idk.
anyways, he don't ride out of weekend, don’t go to the ranch, barely training and lives stressed, sad and high in FEELINGS
It's not until before Valencia (Friday maybe) that he realize “oh, I might be pregnant” and then he DON'T CARE because it's the end of the season and all he want to do is go take a nap with his dog.  He will deal with the bug when the tests are over.
He rides on Saturday and he doesn't do too bad but he hates himself because he could be better, but it is Sunday when he FALLS because Marquez HIT HIM and he realizes that with that blow he could have lost the bug and suddenly it is unacceptable. He drinks beers on an empty stomach, goes to yell at Marc at his truck, drinks some more, goes to SKY and says “Did you know Marquez hit US?”  to anyone who wants to listen to him (people think he's talking about him and Martín, so they don't pay much attention to him)
He goes, picks up his prize completely done and thinking about his bug and how maybe he lost it because of Marquez and cries a little because of the alcohol and hormones, but do you remember that he is a private person?  DON'T TELL ANYONE.  Not his family who is there for him.  Not even Valentino.
pass the valence tests (and Bezz is irresponsible and gets back on the motorcycle) and is wednesday and Marco is at home, with his dog and looking for the number of a former schoolmate who he is sure became a gynecologist and deal with his bug that he may have lost (and he touches his belly and silently begins to pray to a god he hasn't believed in a long time).
the bug is okay :) But beez need to stop riding rn, avoid the levels of stress that he have subjected his body and mind to in recent weeks.  That is if he want to take the baby to term, if not there is also an abortion clinic quite close there.
THEN he have the dilemma of “have the baby or continue your life as if nothing had happened?”  And the answer is that he will have that baby because he is a selfish man who feels lonely.
THEN, only after the first visit to the gynecologist post valencia test he calls Valentino and says “haha boss sorry I need to terminate my contract due to health problems :(“ and “don't you need a sexy pregnant secretary? I really can't stay without a work rn”
Valentino just lost TWO drivers in less than a month and is, of course, mad as shit, but he's also a father and tells Marco (once he hears that apparently he's going to be GRANDPA because bez is also his son) that it's okay, the academy will help you and support you in everything etc etc if you decide to return.
Marco doesn't want to tell to the boys of the academy.  Like, not at all.  He prefers to go hide in the hills before telling his friends that he chose to be a 'father' instead of chasing everyone's dream and becoming a motogp world champion etc etc
So he doesn't tell them anything (yet, he will eventually).
It is made public that he will leave the category to focus on his health and this is how the boys at the academy find out that Marco will not compete in the following season.  and Bezz practically vanished from the face of the earth.
It is not until January, on Pecco's birthday, that he asks to meet when Bezz sends him a message to congratulate him.
Bezz says “Well, meet me at the hospital” and Pecco is clearly panicking and running to the address Bezz gave him.
Then he sees Bezz in the parking lot, beaming and wearing those horrible oversized clothes that he likes so much and he can finally breathe easy.  He tries to ask Marco how he's been and why he disappeared, but Bezz asks him about the academy, about his family, about Pecco's grandmother??  as they walk through the hospital, towards the maternity section and Pecco begins to suspect
Then they arrive at reception, the secretary tells them that they are on time and Pecco is panicking while Marco drags him to the gynecologist, who only raises an eyebrow when she sees the MotoGP world champion there but greets him easily.
Then it's a haze for Pecco, Bezz talks about the changes in his body and the gynecologist tells Marco that they are normal things, that he has been very good and that his baby, whom Bezz insists on calling bug, has no health problems visible and developing very well for being 15 weeks old.  She then turns to Pecco and asks him to remind Marco to take his supplements because he tends to get very forgetful sometimes and that he is glad to finally meet the father.  And have him sign some documents that he has overdue :)
Pecco comes out with ink stains on his hands, lots of questions, and a strip of ultrasounds while Marco laughs at him and his expression.  Then bezz explains that he needed a companion who can come sign the papers.  That does not link Pecco to the child, only to Marco in case his family cannot come look for him in an emergency related to his baby.
Pecco: what.

i will not put noli me tangere and el filibusterismo in perpetua, i will not put noli me tangere and el filibusterismo in perpetua, i will not put noli me tangere and el filibusterismo in perpetua, i will not-
rambling under the cut because i need to figure out something to finish this scene:
the reason why i bring it up at all is because i want to show what a mundane conversation between damien and avery is like when there's not really much else happening in their lives.
much of their conversations in arc 1 were mundane yes but it was like 'getting to know each other (and also letting damien heal a bit after going through the horrors)'. also i will probably need another pass at arc 1 act 2 because i think things are a little messy thematically and i start juggling quite a lot.
-> anyways i wanted that mundane friendship conversation to be about a piece of media. i think literary analysis is something the two of them would talk about (because that's exactly the type of nerds they are, and you've gotta write what you know, yknow?)
there is a precedent for including real books and pieces of media in perpetua. i did it early in arc 1 with mary shelley's frankenstein, to establish perpetua as an educated community, suggest at minerva's sense of humour, and introduce ideas like the rage towards one's creator (with a parent-child / mad science twist).
> haunted hollow (the owl house, but i can't just name drop that one because it's too recent) was mostly used to establish the kind of nerd that avery is, give damien an in-universe blorbo in the form of a zuko/hunter-alike.
>> i might go back to this in arc 3 when the gods chew damien out for not living up to their expectations and compare him to his own blorbo.
> ponyo (which has no in-universe name as of now) was also used to bring in the general theme of "it doesn't matter what you are, i still love you" to the context of damien and avery's friendship. i just needed it to work for a scene and i think it does?
so i absolutely can use real books. the question is whether i should use noli me tangere / el filibusterismo specifically:
el noli came to mind because i'm pretty into it at the moment, and it's thematically rich enough for damien to passionately talk at length about just how hard it goes.
> i'm trying to do this to show that he hasn't just been thinking about haunted hollow for the past 8 months or so, lmao. not that its unrealistic for that to happen, i just think he wouldn't. he's more the type to have a broad knowledge of a lot of different things and then excitedly draw connections between them, rather than fixate on one thing for a long time if that makes sense.
> on a meta level i want to show infodumping and passion in a positive light (avery finds it cute, etc.) because some of my family members don't really appreciate it. i feel like a freak sometimes, i really do.
BUT ANYWAY. the implications of the books
both noli me tangere and el filibusterismo are very much rooted in their socio-historical context, that being the philippines during the late spanish colonial era, and the way it portrays society and the systems in power is unfortunately evergreen. sometimes it feels like hardly anything has changed 137 years later.
in relation to perpetua, the books show a world that the characters have never experienced, whether that be past or present. damien has filipino heritage but the disconnect is apparent (so ironically it loops back around into being a pinoy diaspora experience?). its something to consider when the gods judge him for not being 'good enough representation'.
i dont know how this is going to play out because captain luna is broadly similar to ibarra, in that they're idealistic, upper class illustrado filipinos who studied abroad and had childhood sweethearts named maria-[something], neither of whom they got with in the end. with bonus queer aspects of their stories because tbh it reads like there was Something between ibarra and elias. but anyway. i dont think luna would've read noli and i dont know how he'd feel about the parallels between him and ibarra. probably not very good!
maria-isabel was named after maria clara YES, but i read noli and fili recently so everything surrounding the luna/ibarra parallels are a coincidence.
> damien will likely pick up on these parallels and that opens up an entire can of worms!! worms that i don't know what to do with! but also its an interesting book and i want more people to read it because it fucks severely.
if you have any suggestions for works that damien can be interested in (thematic relevance to greater story ideal) i would love to hear them

Can't believe this never dawned on me before. Do any of the holders speak another language? Have new languages developed over the eons?
Very excited to talk about this one cause I've always wanted to discuss demon language specifically!
But!! I'm getting ahead of myself! I'll answer the first part quick!
John- Basically nothing outside of English. Knows some individual words, but often mixes up what languages they come from, and even what they mean.
Charles- A bit of Standard Chinese, but not enough to hold a conversation. Some Greed-Variety Demontongue, just enough to handle business contracts.
Ferris- A decent amount of Spanish, although he doesn't use it a whole lot due to lack of opportunities. Basic Demontongue, mostly dumb pickup lines.
Daniel- Literate with French, Egyptian, Standard Chinese, and a decent amount of Basic and Pride-Variety Demontongue, is unable to speak any of these.
Jeagar- Very knowledgeable regarding Hebrew, literate with several ancient dead languages, especially Latin, Sanskrit, Biblical Hebrew, and Akkadian. Also literate with all varieties of Demontongue and Angelchirp. Can speak most of these on an intermediate level.
---
Now!! Regarding languages in the ZoP universe! In general, at least on Earth, I don't imagine humans or undead have really created new languages. That being said, I do imagine the degradation of borders and interactions between undead/humans from other cultures has led to the development of multiple sub-languages all around the world. I won't get into every single one here, it's just something I'm laying out.
There are two languages exclusive to ZoP itself I'd like to discuss; Angelchirp and Demontongue, those being the native tongues of angels and demons of course.
---
NOTE: Just for context, the words from these languages take snippets from other words of whatever speech they're being translated into (ex; "fivfinlim", which takes bits from the words "five", "finger", and "limb", means "hand" in Basic Demontongue). The words in my writing will be based on the English language for my convenience. That being said, Angelchirp and Demontongue are very complicated in their original forms, so they need to be heavily localized for humans to even understand them as languages (and literally not explode while trying to speak them).
TLDR; The translated versions of these languages I use in ZoP are not the only versions that exist.
---
OK WITH THAT IN MIND, Angelchirp is pretty universally similar for all angels. There may be some dialect differences for the higher-ups, but that's about it. When translated, it often uses bits of words related to emotions and the spiritual. It also acts as the base for all languages in the universe, including Demontongue.
Speaking of, Demontongue is far more complex and insane than to Angelchirp. While most basic nouns/verbs are universally the same, a lot of words can be totally different depending on what species of demon is speaking. So uh...yeah...prepare for a beefy ass read lmao.
---
Gluttony/Wrath/Lust-Variety (also called Basic): The first and most common rendition of Demontongue. Quite similar to Angelchirp in its original script due to being a direct descendent from when Hell was first created. Where it differs is that when translated, it uses snippets of words related to the physical, usually regarding nature and flesh.
---
Greed-Variety: A more complicated version than Basic, originally invented by greed demons as a form of code to prevent outsiders (including other demons) from prying into their affairs. Not really spoken in casual conversation, mostly used to encode secret messages. Often rely on the words of numeric systems when translated.
---
Sloth/Envy-Variety (also called Simple): An odd version of the language that predominantly appears in magic-related material written during humanity's Dark Ages. Origins coincide with the era when Sloth and Envy Demons terrorized humanity. Most notably the easiest variety to translate due to being more similar to the Greek alphabet than demonic runes (the progenitor for Basic Demontongue). Because of this, magidemics believe Simple was actually created by early human sorcerers as a tool for what would become spell crafting.
---
Pride-Variety: The most difficult and complicated of all varieties of Demontongue created during the peak of the Pride Demon's culture. Infamous for having some of the most convoluted, long, and difficult to pronounce words, perhaps in all of the universe (ex: "crekmahogoakbireverbarkflorfon", which means board). Hell-based historians argue this is to increase the magic potential of Pride Demon spells, although adept sorcerers believe this was done so the noble class could gatekeep their brand of magic from the "common rabble". Regardless, due to the outbreak of the Affliction, there is the very real possibility that this dialect might become a dead language in the not too distant future, which brings worry to the magic world, but relief to those tasked with translating demonic scripture.

Introduction:
Hi! I’m Celina!
This is my side blog for language/linguistics!
I am Japanese, as well as American + Canadian. (Half, Quarter-Quarter)
I’m just here to idk- practice my shitty Spanish and get better at Kanji + harder Japanese vocab!
Japanese Level:
I would say I’m pretty good at speaking Japanese. I might not get harder concepts, but I can definitely get around if I needed to.
My reading and writing…ugh yeah definitely not it. Primarily, I struggle with kanji. I’m like at a 3rd grade level lmao.
So if I practice Japanese, it’ll probably be that.
English Level:
2nd language. But I’m WAYYY better at it than Japanese. I think and go to school in an English-speaking country. Ahem 🦅🔫💥💥
I speak a weird mix of American and Canadian English Aha-
Spanish Level:
I would say around A2…?
As of current I’m trying to figure out how some tenses work, and picking up more vocab. Yes I need to work on conjugation omg-
I’m only learning it for future job purposes and just for convenience, so I actually am not as fascinated with it. But, I’ve decided to use my motivation as “The faster I learn it, the faster I can move on to other languages”.
As for my 4 skills:
Reading: If I know the vocab, pretty good. Strongest skill.
Listening: Bad. If it’s like, moderate speed, Duolingo podcast level, then. I can understand everything.
Speaking/Writing: Pronunciation is easy. I think I just need to get more secure with my grammar.
.
.
.
Languages I want to learn after Spanish:
• French (I’m actually learning French a tiny bit, but it’s not on my main focus)
• Flemish/Dutch (French and Flemish bcs I want to live in Belgium when I’m older)
• Korean (Closely related to Japanese, I listen to quite a bit of K-pop lmao)
• Russian or Ukrainian (I’m a 3rd gen Russian/Ukrainian [yes a mix] and I wanna speak with my cousins without them making fun of me ;-;)
Ok! Less Boring stuff.
Things I’ll do on here!
Song Vocabs.
(Basically I take songs and translate any vocab I don’t know. I’ll do this more for Japanese rather than Spanish.)
Translations of my fanfics.
(I think I’ll do this in both Spanish and Japanese. On my main blog, I write yandere fanfics so…yeah. I think it would be an easy way to obtain vocab for me.)
(As of write now, I write Yan: Rottmnt, Splatoon, Spiderverse, and Cookie Run [weird arrangement Ik])
Little journals.
(I’ll do this more with Spanish rather than Japanese. Just because it’ll benefit my Spanish more.)
Single-Kanji Studies.
(Kinda obv. Only Japanese. I’m actually not that bad at Japanese definition, but my Chinese derivatives? Yeah no- a disaster.)
Things people can ask/interact about:
• Any questions or practice with Japanese! I’m not like the best, but my grammar is pretty solid. (And English too-)
• My study routines, how I learn.
• Just simply talk about whatever! I’m pretty extroverted online-

Hello again! Another question! I’ve seen some systems say that certain alters have the “files” per se of certain skills (like driving a car or doing a job, etc). Does this mean someone with that skillset will always front during that activity? Or is it possible someone without that skill fronts at that time (like an alter who can’t drive is fronting when the system has to drive for whatever reason)?
I’m guessing positive triggers could be used sometimes in the latter situation, but I’m not sure if positive triggers always work? Or if there’s situations where it’s dangerous to switch for whatever reason? Or do, for instance, protectors in the system have more awareness and can front/the brain pushes that person to the front?
Lol this ended up being like four questions in one but i’m quite interested in DID and want to understand it more from actual systems. Obviously if anything is too personal you don’t have to answer!
more good questions!!
so, lots of us have different skills!
three of us, myself included, can speak enough spanish to hold a pretty basic conversation. others can’t even understand it, and some only know bits and pieces.
most of us remember all of the rules for playing dungeons and dragons, but two of us barely even know what the game is
some of us are good at art, or handling stressful situations, or even better at pushing the body physically (i can usually lift heavier things/run faster and longer/ climb better/ jump farther and higher than some other members, we think this is likely due to willpower)
the right alters don’t always front at the right times! i for instance, am terrible with words and stumble over them a lot, plus my vocabulary is pretty limited compared to some of the others (we have a gifted diagnose in languages, and many of us are very eloquent speakers/writers)
however, since i am a protector and meant to front when we are feeling heightened levels of fear, if we have a speech or debate we are particularly nervous for, i might end up getting triggered, which is definetly not an ideal plan lmao
sometimes littles have switched in when we’re in loud, overwhelming places, and caused a lot of trouble and fear until a caretaker switched in to help them, or if the littles remember to message their safety person.
while trying to understand something written in spanish, we switched to an alter who doesn’t understand even the basics (mark)
so yeah, it’s not always the most ideal switches lmao
but often, things we’re really good at can be positive triggers, which can help bring the right person out!
i almost always get triggered before our guitar lessons, because i love guitar! (the few times i haven’t, we played it off as being very overtired)
i also sometimes get triggered near places with large dogs, which isn’t great because i have a pretty bad fear of dogs. i’ve found it to be a negative trigger of mine, but i’m working on it!
hope that answers your questions!!!

Mood of the day:
Cypher pt.3: Killer ~ BTS
My best friend was not feeling well at all so I invited him for lunch. We ate pizzas and he cried a bit on my shoulder and I tried my best to comfort him. He doesn’t confide in anyone but me and I am a bit scared that I am doing it wrong. It’s hard to find the right words, even when you have been in that mental headspace, all words sound wrong somehow. We then walked around a bit because I had nausea (anxiety hello).
Tumblr media
I went to the cinema with one of my besties. We watched “My rendezvous with Leo” which was about an older woman paying for a man prostitute’s services for the first time after the death of her husband because she never tried anything in bed other than letting her husband do his thing and being left unsatisfied. Everything took place on the same hotel room and they met 4 times. The movie and dialogues were really well made it was a great film I liked it. A solid 17/20. I really recognized myself in her somehow despite how annoying she could be. She visited him with a list of things to do, that’s definitely me as a client as well lmao.
When I came back from the cinema, I changed at home and went straight to the gym with my roommate. I don’t like her gym as much as my bestie’s one but it’s okay to go there to run and row. We stayed till the closure at 11pm (yeah I really do sport for a living atm it’s terrible my body wasn’t ready)
I had a panic attack tonight and I had to go out at night for a short hour. I did not take my anxiety meds because I mistook the symptoms for potential stomach problems, as usual. Also I am trying to learn how to cope with my panic attacks without taking my meds. It’s not always easy but I am quite proud of the past few weeks during which I didn’t take them. I know that it’s okay if I need them to stabilize myself but I want to learn to manage my emotions and overwhelming anxiety on my own.
Also I got my Duolingo recap, I learned 890 words this year and I am hoping to reach the B1 level in Spanish at the end of 2023. Yes I am already setting goals.

So I saw TFS today and since you share my passion for rinharu I gotta gush a little. I just feel like Rin dropping free is kinda all about Haru. He kept thinking about Ikuya asking him how Haru winning made him feel, so I took his final decision to mean that Haru winning was enough even if they weren't competing together, and if he could win in fly they would be together at the same level. Like being with Haru matters more than being his rival. Poor baby just wants to be by his side... TT
Yeah, I got the shark baby too, I get what's happened here from both sides. And it's not like we didn't know that if he had to pick in between it would always be Haru, its been like this since s1. His priority always was "with", not "against". The part I do not get is why they talk as if one of them talk in spanish instead of japanese lmao.
I get that he's angry that Haru didn't get that he did it for their future together, I'd be too. Considering how hard it was for him, I'd be upset too. But what I don't get is why he interpreted Haru's words like that. About the always leaving part. Like I mean I get that he doesn't quite see what was going on in Haru's head with his war flashbacks to his first heartbreak when he was tiny, but like... it's like he always hears some certain part, but not the whole thing.
A lot of my fav couples used this "saying the most atrocious painful things to make him leave" thing, but it always hurts me a lot that during that they're in so much pain bc of those words that they don't even pause to realise that it doesn't make sense. Like why would he suddenly go there and say stuff like that and what it means. I personally adore this type of angst with a happy ending, bc it gives you that emotional bomb, but I'm always like it hurts me that they think so badly about themselves and have such bad self-esteem, that he really went like "yeah, I'm the worst thing that ever happened to him, he's right", not even hearing what he really said. I'm just, I wanna strangle them both.
Tumblr media
P.S. also please, gush a lot, I'm only gonna be happy xD
P.P.S. I also feel like they're both genuinely tired already, it's like they dedicated their whole life to the dream of being together and wanting it so badly and now they're both scared of losing it and it's just.. it's exhausting and a bit horrifying as it is. But combined with the whole relationship crisis of "omg he doesn't want me, even tho the thought of being next to him is what gave me an inspiration to move forward" is just too much for rational thinking rn probably. But I still do not get how like the whole fandom from all sides got it and he didn't lol. Bc he's thinking "but I can't leave him" as in alone in freestyle race with Albert from what ppl told me, right? And that just.. I do not understand why, thats not what Haru said. Its not.
You know I adore him and I'd never doubt his love for Haru ever, bc it's insane (lol), and I give him all the points for loving Haru so much, that he's willing to go there not even caring that right now in his opinion Haru thinks of him "so badly". But it doesn't change the fact that its insanely stupid of him.
But then again typical idiotism coming from those who love each other a lot, but don't think much of themselves.

BAU as College Professors AU
*cracks knuckles*
Penelope
penelope is a graphic design professor
she loves teaching kids about the wonders of photoshop!!
hates illustrator and indesign with a burning passion
(the illustrator pen tool can fucking choke for all she cares)
(AND HOW THE FUCK DO YOU PUT THE FRONT AND COVER TOGETHER IN INDESIGN!?!?)
(she really hates both applications sm 😭)
is always reluctant to teach them but does it begrudgingly
(she’s just glad there’s other professors in the department that teach editorial and graphic illustration)
teaches photography!!
encourages the students to be as expressive as they want to be with their pictures!!!
she’ll be just as enthusiastic to see a close up of a sneaker as she is to see a sunset landscape shot
teaches the graphic design studio classes too!!
she always has music playing!!
half the time, her students come into the class and her glasses are all skewed, her hands are covered in paint or glue and some abstract art piece is sitting on her desk
when the students ask her what it is, she just gives the projects human names
“hey professor... what did you make there?” “oh, this?? her name is... pam.... yeah, pam”
she doesn’t offer up any further explination than that
and the students just accept it
her office light is always off
but she has multiple fairy lights in various colors hung up
her office is v inviting!!!
students come to her to vent or to talk about their problems bc the campus therapist doesn’t help all lmao
she always has on the most unique outfits but she pulls them off so well
a ray of sunshine tbh!!
Spencer
teaches major science and math courses
he teaches chemistry but only chem for majors in chemistry
it’s not that he can’t teach chem for non majors
but he sometimes gets too ahead of himself and forgets he’s teaching a course for non majors
it’s easier for him to teach for majors because the students can follow his ramblings better
he teaches upper level math courses and usually only has like three students in those classes
he’ll sit up on his desk and debate with the students for the entire hour about the riemann hypothesis
he gets excited because the students are just as enthusiastic as he is
he is two extremes
he either shows up to his classroom like a half hour early and writes out all his notes on the board so that when the students come in, he can go right into lecture
or he’ll show up two minutes before class starts with his hair disheveled, his tie undone and his expression glazed over and just be like “listen up i woke up late and just downed an entire pot of coffee i brewed with several cans of monster energy—i don’t exist on this dimension anymore”
on those days, he lets his students work on other projects for other classes because he knows it’s not fair to ask his students to focus if he’s not
he helps them with their homework
penelope brings him lunch sometimes to make sure he’s eating
he appreciates it a lot because between lesson plans and grading, he sometimes forgets to eat
he’s absolutely the youngest prof on campus
sometimes even his students are older than he is
but everyone addresses him correctly and respects him bc he’s really chill
his office is a disorganized mess
there’s files and papers all over his desk
and a sculpture penelope made for him (she named that one “roger”)
JJ
psychology professor
she really has a passion for teaching and learning about human psychology
(she may have started to become interested in psychology bc her sister was in the psch honors course before she died)
she comes across as a little hostile and unapproachable tbh
but she’s young
and she’s attractive
and she’s not conveniently what people think a professor looks like
she’ll respect her students if they respect her
she didn’t graduate the top of her class and work her ass off for the degree to not be respected
if there’s any inappropriate comments aimmed towards her or anyone in the class, she kicks the aggressor out immediately
she stands at the front of the room and lectures for the beginning part of the semester
once she’s built a good rapport with her students (and vise versa), she becomes more chill
she’ll sit on the edge of her desk and encourage discussion rather than following a book or a set plan
(she finds it’s more interesting that way anyway)
sometimes her students will show up ten minutes before class starts just to talk with her once they’re comfortable with her
she always answers her emails students send her (queen shit tbh 👑)
some kids in the psych major course playfully call her “mom” because she always asks them how they’re doing and about their week
(she hasn’t decided how she feels about it, but she also lets it slide)
always wears pants suits but cuffs the sleeves to the jackets
her office always smells like eucalyptus because she has a small mist diffuser plugged in
she also has a small fish tank with a beta fish inside (its the appropriate size too!!)
(she let a student name the fish—it’s name is sir bubbles of argon)
she also has a sculpture from penelope (“her name is maxine”)
her desk is very organized and clean!!
there’s a small couch in her office and her door is always open
sometimes, students will come in if they’re having a hard time and need someone to talk to
they know jj is there to listen and she always seems to understand (she doesn’t judge them either)
Emily
teaches three languages, both for majors and non majors
spanish, french and russian
(she’s also quite fluent in arabic and italian and can hold her own if she’s speaking in german or mandarin, but the students don’t need to know that)
she’s actually very intimidating lmao
students are so scared of her 😭
she’s serious af
(she smiles in class sometimes though!!)
(besides, she’s only serious inside the classroom)
(outside the classroom, she might even be as approachable as penelope)
always dressed in expensive black suits, polished heeled shoes with very dark makeup and a “don’t fuck with me” steely attitude to match
she also wears expensive watches
she always stands at the front of the class and slowly paces the entire hour
one time someone decided to fuck off in her spanish 101 class
she didn’t even yell at him, she glared
rumor has it the kid was never spotted on campus again after that
(BOY SHE SCARED HIM SO BAD HE DROPPED TF OUT)
despite that, her classes are some of the easiest to take
one because emily has a way of teaching that helps all students understand
and two because her voice is naturally very easy to listen to
students taking her french 101 are going to leave the class speaking fluent conversational french
she also doesn’t tolerate people being racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc in her class
if she catches a bigoted comment someone makes in her class, she kicks them immediately
she brings in her cat sometimes
he’s all black and his name is sergio
(he’s her esa that she brings in when she’s feeling really stressed out)
he’s clipped on a harness and sits on her shoulder or on her desk
if he meows, she accepts it as an answer
it’s the only time the students ever see professor emily prentiss as soft
well
other than the days she has the class watch foreign films because the students can tell emily has a fondness for them
her office is pretty organized like jj’s
instead of it being light and inviting, emily decorated her office on a more dark side
she has a few animal skulls, crystals and other gothic memorabilia on her desk or bookshelf
she has a small cat bed on the corner of her desk that sergio sleeps in
on the other corner is a sculpture penelope made her
(it kinda looks like a crow and emily named it kurt)
really, the only colors in her office are dark, deep purples and the small lesbian pride flag sticker on the back of her laptop
Derek
teaches history classes
but like modern history
from like 1940s to present
he refuses to follow most western history books bc they’re not accurate like at all
in his first year of teaching, the dean of his department made him use a book and he hated every second of it
how accurate could the information be if they portray king tut as a white guy???
he graduated under one of the best historians in the country
he also traveled a lot after he graduated and met a lot of people that had first hand experience with major historical events
that’s really what he bases his teachings off of—first hand experiences and encounters
every two weeks or so, he’ll invite in guest speakers to his classes to talk about what they went through (depending on his lesson plans)
that’s how he likes to teach and learn (bc he always loves to learn new things!!)
this is random, but also he is the type of professor to randomly box jump up onto a desk
he also sits in chairs backwards and has a more laid back style to teaching
his exams are based on what the students can learn from history rather than the information itself
he’s always dressed super casual!!
solid color, short sleeve button ups are a favorite!! (no tie)
he gets along with all the students
he’ll talk to the athletes about their games but sound just as enthusiastic and genuine talking with students who are majors in fine arts about their projects
he’s just a v down to earth professor tbh!!
he brings in clooney so much
like... every friday
it’s just another bonus of taking his history classes!!
he and penelope are dating
his office is full of sculptures she makes for him 🥺
he drops by her graphic design studio class with clooney to help out or even to just watch
he’s supportive and encouraging of penelope and her art!!
other than the sculptures penelope makes him, his office is a bit more disorganized than jj’s or emily’s, but cleaner than spencer’s
he has a few papers scattered on his desk but mostly he’s a little more put together
his office door has a small basketball hoop attached that he plays around with if he’s bored (and if penelope is busy)
both he and penelope have a dog bed in their office and water bowls for clooney when he comes in
Hotch
law professor
is the most intimidating professor on campus
like
seriously
if students think professor prentiss is intimidating, they haven’t met professor hotchner
he stands in the front of the room and goes over his lecture without pausing or asking questions
his voice is naturally low and intimidating and he actually never smiles
his attire and appearance is always so professional
suits
ties that are tied so tight, they look like they’re choking him
shoes so polished, he can see his reflection in them
hair always styled neatly
pants and jacket are always wrinkle free
his classes are difficult
not just because of the subject matter, but because he has a very organized, straight forward method to his teaching
students wouldn’t dare act up in his class—they’d be absolute idiots to
he’s quiet and reserved outside the classroom
if the others hear anyone talking shit about hotch behind his back, they’re always quick to come to his defense
they actually know hotch
they know he puts on a hardass exterior, but really he’s just a softie
he always lets them hang in his office with him
he listens to spencer’s ramblings and is extremely patient with him
he has lunch with emily every other day
even if she’s a pain in his ass 99% of the time, he likes that she sticks around and that he can trust her
he shows up to all of penelope’s art shows
and sometimes sits in on derek’s lectures when he has guest speakers
jj brings him pastries from the coffee shop on campus sometimes
he knows that he can come to her if he ever has anything he needs to talk about
(he never opens up to her but he really appreciates the sentiment nonetheless)
penelope has definitely made hotch a few sculptures
(he keeps them at home, but he does have one of her paintings hanging in his office)
speaking of his office it’s hands down the most organized out of all of them
his desk is so clean besides the picture of his son he proudly displays at the corner
he always has his lights off and his door shut
he seems so unapproachable, especially in class
but sometimes his lecture notes have crayon scribbles all over the page
or a small sock will fall out of his briefcase
and maybe, even for a moment, his serious demeanor falls when he spots them
and it almost reassures the students that he is human
Rossi
actually he’s the only one besides maybe reid i can see being a criminology professor
is a retired fbi agent
and successful author
so like that hasn’t changed from canon
but because he doesn’t work for the fbi anymore, he has absolutely no chill and tells all secrets
he’ll be like
talking to his class about a case he worked on in ‘83
and be halfway talking about details of cases that were supposed to be confidential
he’ll pause and go “oops” but keep talking lmaooo
penelope actually never made him a sculpture
instead she made him a coffee mug she made on the wheel and glazed herself!! (she even made her own glaze bc she’s extra like that)
carved on the side is “world’s best italian dad”
(this is because when emily introduced rossi to the group she was like “yeah he’s kinda like my dad” and now everyone calls him “dad”)
(he loves it so much though and proudly accepts his title)
he loves his mug so much and uses it every single day!!!
he’s the only professor besides penelope that let his students refer to him without the title of “professor”
he gives off kind old grandpa vibes
and that he’s only teaching because he really doesn’t have anything better to do during his retirement
but he’s chill and his class is interesting to take
(plus he really does love to teach)
he’ll ramble on and on about his “golden years” as an agent
he will especially talk a student’s ear off if they come up to him and tell him that they read one [or all] of his books
he writes a different quote on his board every single day
his attire is always business casual
he sits on the edge of the desk or on a swivel chair because it’s comfy
he was doing a lecture on jack the ripper and just pushed himself around on the swivel chair, slowly spinning around the front of the room
his voice kept changing in volume every few words because of him facing the wall and then a few moments later facing the classroom
his students refer to him as a “living breathing meme”
he has no idea what the fuck that means
but he take it as a compliment
his office is empty because he goes home after he’s done with classes lmao
he doesn’t do paperwork
or fuck with technology (he never fucking responds to emails smh)
so he has no need for an office

Hi! I’ve seen you talk about italki on here in the past. How do you find it? Worth the money? Does it feel awkward? I’ve been using duolingo to learn Spanish (did like beginners years ago at school) and after some duo am at a2 now. feeling like as much as duo is good, I never actually talk to anyone and I probably need that to level me up any further. Hope you don’t mind me sending this ask, you always seem really nice and helpful on your blog. All the best!
Hi there! Personally I like italki for a number of reasons:
1) I'm paying the person to listen to my shit grammar and correct my mistakes. That means I don't feel like I have to apologise or feel embarrassed (which is the main reason I didn't want to do free language exchange - I felt sorry for the poor person who had to listen to my bad grammar/pronunciation etc).
2) I'm making a commitment. I'm pretty hopeless at making myself do things and setting aside time for things, so booking a lesson means I'm committed to showing up at that time to practice my Norwegian (and I can't back out last minute because you're not allowed to cancel within 24 hours of a lesson).
3) It gives me a little more direction. When you're a beginner, it's quite easy to pick topics to learn (clothes, food, hobbies etc), but as you progress into intermediate (especially B2 level), it can be difficult to know what exactly to study. Having a tutor helps because either they'll have a syllabus for you to follow, or you'll find out through conversation what vocabulary you're lacking.
4) It boosts my confidence. I've never had a tutor who made me feel stupid; they've always been really encouraging, even when I've struggled to express myself.
5) Unless they're quite new and they're only community tutors, they have experience or knowledge of how to give useful feedback (although I recommend mentioning beforehand that you want feedback and what kind of feedback is useful for you - do you want to be interrupted? Do you want corrections/feedback to be sent after the class? Do you only want them to correct specific grammar mistakes? Suggest vocabulary? At A2 level you'll probably make more mistakes than can realistically be corrected in a single session, plus some tutors are reluctant to give corrections because they think it'll damage your confidence).
As for awkward, it's usually not awkward for me. Sometimes you don't vibe with someone and then the 30 minutes is a little strained, but generally speaking you can get a good idea as to whether you'll vibe with someone by looking at their profile and watching their video. I usually come to class armed with a few questions about synonyms/grammar/culture, so that if conversation's a bit of a struggle, I can fall back on those. I highly recommend that you book a trial lesson (or just a 30-minute lesson if you've run out) first to see if you vibe and ask the tutor about how they run their classes, what materials they use, how they give feedback etc (I feel like this is obvious, but I get a surprising number of package requests for hour-long lessons from people who haven't even sent me a message).
I do however want to be absolutely clear that it isn't necessary to spend your money on a tutor to improve your language level. There are lots of language exchange apps where you can find people to talk to, and there are sometimes even helpful tumblrs who'll offer to chat with you too (or at least give corrections/feedback on things you post on tumblr). You may be able to find a language partner on the italki community too. Talking to yourself is another a great way to practice speaking if you don't have anyone to talk to but don't want to spend money on a tutor (although of course you won't get corrections unless you post it somewhere).
Sorry for the essay lmao hope it was helpful! Good luck learning Spanish!

Dear ‘White guy speaks perfect X and shocks Y!’ language YouTubers: STOP
A rant about every single fucking video by Xiaomanyc and similar YouTubers all titled things like CLUELESS WHITE GUY/GIRL LEARNS [INSERT NON-WHITE LANGUAGE HERE] AND SHOCKS [INSERT PLACE].
Disclaimer: I am white British, and I am also very often a moron. I'm trying to inform myself more, and would like to learn. So let me know if there is anything I should change, anything I’ve got wrong or any terminology I can change.
So this evening I opened YouTube to get some quality Hikaru no Go content, and saw yet another video recommended to me about Xiaomanyc called Clueless white guy orders in perfect Chinese, shocks patrons and staff!!!!
Really? Really. Ok, his Chinese certainly is good - but it isn't great. And it isn’t necessarily any better than people I've seen in the higher levels of a class at university who have spent some time in China. It's solidly intermediate. That's not an insult - that level of Chinese is hard to attain, and definitely worth celebrating!! Hell, I celebrate every new word I learn. But while it may be unusual, it doesn't forgive the clickbait type videos like 'White guy speaks perfect Chinese and wows [insert place]'.
These kind of clickbait titles rest on a number of assumptions. Before I say any more, I just want to make a note about terminology. Note that ’majority’ and ‘minority’ are not necessarily helpful labels, because they imply both a) a higher number of speakers in a certain place, and b) socially prestigious in some way. Of course a language like standard Mandarin is not a minority in China, but it might be in Germany. Talking about ‘minority’ languages that have a large speaker base outside of the country, like Chinese, is also not the same as talking about languages that have been systematically surpressed by a colonising, dominant language in their original communities, like indigenous languages. In many communities, especially in colonial and post-colonial situations, the language spoken by the majority is not one of prestige at all. Or some languages may be prestigious and expected in oral contexts, but not written - and so on. I use these terms here as best I can, but don't expect them to work 100% of the time.
So let’s unpack these assumptions a little.
1) That there is something inherently more ‘worthy’ in somebody who learns languages because they want to, rather than because they have to: and that, correspondingly, the people who want to are white (spoilers: much of Europe is multilingual, and white immigrants in majority white countries also exist, as well as discrimination against them e.g. Polish people in the UK), and that those who have to learn are not (spoilers: really? There are plenty of non-white monolinguals who are either happy being monolingual, don’t have access to learning, or don’t have to learn another language but are interested in it).
2) That everybody from a certain background automatically speaks all ‘those’ languages already, or that childhood multilingualism is a free pass - spoilers, it isn’t. Achieving high levels of fluency in multiple languages is hard, especially for languages with different writing systems, because no matter how perfect your upbringing, you’re still ultimately exposed to it maximum 50% of the time of monolingual speakers. Realistically, most people get far less exposure than 50% in any of their languages. Also, situations of multilingualism in many parts of the world are far more complex than home language / social language. You might speak one language with your father and his father, another with your mother and her family, another in the community, and another at school. Which one is your native language then? Monolinguals tell horror stories of ‘both cups half empty’ scenarios, but come on - how on earth do you expect a person to have the same size vocabulary in a language they hear only 25% of the time? Also, languages are spoken in different domains, to different people, in different social situations: just because someone hears Farsi at home doesn’t mean they can give a talk on the filing system at their local library. If something is outside of a multilingual person’s langauge domain, they might have to learn the vocabulary for it just like monolinguals. There’s no such thing as the ‘perfect bilingual’.
3) That learning another language imperfectly for leisure is laudable, but learning one imperfectly for work or survival is not. If you’re a speaker of a minority language, learning another language is necessary, ‘just what you have to do’, and if you don’t do it ‘properly’, that’s because of your lack of intelligence / laziness etc. It’s cool for the seconday school student to speak a bit of bad Japanese, but not so cool for the Indian guy who runs her favourite restaurant in Tokyo.
4) That majority speakers learning a minority language is somehow an act of surprising benevolence that should not go unrewarded. Languages are intrinsically tied up with identity - and access to them may not be a right, but a gift. Don’t assume that because you get a good reception with some speakers of one language that speakers of another will be grateful you’re learning their language, or that everyone will react the same. One of the reasons these videos are possible at all is that many Chinese speakers, in my experience, are incredibly welcoming and enthusiastic to non-natives learning Chinese. Some languages and linguistic groups have been so heavily persecuted that imagining such thing as an ‘apolitical’ language learner is a fundamental misunderstanding of the context in which the language is spoken, and essentially an impossibility when the act of speaking claims ownership to a group. Many people will not want you to learn their language, because it has been suppressed for hundreds of years - it’s theirs, not yours. We respect that. Whilst it’s great to learn a minority language, don’t do it for the YouTube likes - do it because you’re genuinely interested in the language, people, culture and history. We don’t deserve anything special for having done so.
5) That speaking a ‘foreign’ (i.e. culturally impressive / prestigious) language is much more impressive and socially acceptable than speaking a heritage language, home language or indigenous language. There are harmful language policies all around the world that simultaneously encourage the learning of ‘educational’ languages like Spanish, and at the same time forbid the use of the child’s mother tongue in class. And many non-majority languages are not foreign at all - they were spoken here, wherever you are, before English or Spanish or Russian or, yes, standard Mandarin Chinese. Policies that encourage standardised testing in English from a very young age like the ‘No Child Left Behind’ policy in the US disproportionately affect indigenous communities that are trying to revitalise their language against overwhelming callousness and cruelty - they expect bilingual children to attain the same level of English as a monolingual in first grade, which in an immersion school, they obviously won’t (and shouldn’t - they’ll get enough exposure to English as they grow up to make it not matter later down the line). But if the schools want funding, their kids have to pass those tests.
There’s more to cover - that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Some people’s response to these videos and why the titles are ‘wrong’ would be: does it matter that he's white? Shouldn't it just be 'second language learner speaks perfect Chinese'? This is the same sort of attitude as ‘I don’t see race’. I think it does matter that he is white - because communities of many languages around the world are so used to them having to learn a second language and colonial powers not bothering to learn theirs. You wouldn't get the same reactions in these videos if he were Asian American but grew up speaking / hearing no Chinese - because then it would be expected. You also wouldn't get the same reaction if he were an immigrant in a Chinese-speaking community from somewhere else in Asia.
It also implies that all white people = monolingual Americans with no interest in other cultures. While we all are complacent and complicit in failing to educate ourselves about the effects of historical and modern colonialism, titles like this perpetuate a very harmful stereotype - and I don't mean harmful as in 'poor Xiaomanyc', but harmful in that it suggests that this attitude is ok, it's part of 'being white', and therefore doesn't need to change. The reaction when someone doesn't engage with other cultures and isn't willing to learn about them shouldn't be 'lmao classic white guy'. That not only puts the subject in a group with other 'classic white guys', but puts a nice acceptable label on what really is privilege, a lack of curiosity, ignorance, and the opportunity (which most non-white people don't have) to have everything you learn in school and university be about you. If you're ignorant - ok. We are all about many things. But you don't have any excuse not to educate yourself. The 'foreigner experience' that white people get in places like China is not the same as immigrants in a predominantly monolingual, predominantly white English speaking area. As we can see in those kind of videos, white foreigners may be stared at, but ultimately enjoy huge privilege in many places around the world. It's not the same.
It also ignores, well, essentially the whole of Europe outside the UK and Ireland and many other places around the globe, where multilingualism is incredibly common - and where the racial dichotomy commonly heard in America isn't quite appropriate, or an oversimplification of many complex ethnic/national/racial/religious/linguistic etc factors that all influence discrimination and privilege. Actually many 'white guys' in Europe and places all around the world speak four or five languages to get by - some in highly privileged upbringings and school systems, yes, but others because they have grown up in a border town, or because they are immigrants and want to give their children a better start than they did, or because they want to work abroad and send home money. Many, like people all around the world, don't get a chance to learn to read and write their first language or dialect, which is considered 'lesser' than the majority language (French, Russian, English etc); many people, like Gaelic speakers in Scotland or speakers of Basque in France, have faced historical persecution and have been denied opportunities for speaking their mother tongue. My mother was beaten and my grandparents denied jobs for being Gaelic speakers. They are white, and they have benefited from being white in lots of other ways - but their linguistic experience is light-years from Xiaomanyc's.
It isn't 'white' to be surprised at a white person speaking another language - it's just ignorant. But the two ARE correlated, because who in modern America can afford to go through twenty one years and still be ignorant? People who have never had to learn a second language; people who have always had everybody adapt to THEIR linguistic needs, and not the other way around. People who have had all media, all books, centred around people who look like them and speak like them. And even in America, that's not just 'white' - that's specifically white (often middle class) English monolinguals.
I'm not saying everybody who doesn't speak a language should feel guilty for not learning one ( it's understandably not the priority for everyone - economic reasons, family, only so many hours in the day - there are plenty of reasons why language learning when you don’t have to is also not accessible to everyone).  But be aware of the double standards we have as a society towards other socially/racially/religiously disadvantaged groups versus white college grads. You can't demonise one whilst lauding the other.
To all language YouTubers - do yourself a favour, and stop doing this. Your skills are impressive - that's enough.
tldr; clickbait titles like this rely on double standards and perpetuate harmful ideas - don't write them, and let your own language skills do the talking please.

hi!! I don’t know if you’re still doing match ups but if it’s not too much trouble I’d really love one :) if not, no worries!
I’m bi and my pronouns are she/her. I’m Cuban-American, so I speak Spanish and English fluently. I’m 5 ft tall, have really long hair (it reaches the bottom of my butt if that makes sense lol) that’s brown/dirty blonde, amber/brown eyes, and slightly sun tanned skin. The joke in my family is that I look like a hispanic lady gaga lol but I’m what the cool kids might call curvy. I’m sorta the mom/therapist friend, quite witchy (like, intuitive & spiritual), and I’m introverted until you get to know me.
I love being there for other people, because I know what it’s like to have no one to turn to. I’ve had an ED before I’m doing much better now, but on a personal level I’m still a bit insecure, but you’d never know it because I carry myself very confidently (I get described as sensual pretty often lol). As for clothes, I’m usually a bit bold. I wear a lot of darker colors and red, short shorts are a staple in my closet, as are skinny jeans, usually my outfits are tight fitting and yes… I own leather pants, shorts, and skirts. I’m also accidentally a natural flirt (I don’t mean to me a lot of the time, it just sorta happens lmao). I love drinking tea, love love love reading, sketch in my free time, and I’m currently studying to be a nurse.
I love learning new things and I adore all animals. The ocean is like a second home to me, I spend a lot of weekends swimming and diving. I listen to a lot of music but I tend to stick more with classic rock type stuff (Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, etc.). Also, I’m a Scorpio! Sorry this is so long but that’s pretty much it! Thank youuuu!! <3
damiano<3
Tumblr media
you’d dress so extra, in a bold way and eye catchy clothes. he’d always compliment you, as he knows about your problems with confidence. tho, he also just likes complimenting you, cuz you genuinely look stunning to him, no matter what you’re wearing (and he tells you that multiple times a day).
imagine it’s late autumn and you’re sitting under a blanket on an armchair next to Dami, with his arm around your waist. a cup of hot chamomile tea is on the small table next to you and you can sense it’s tempting scent as you read aloud. you chose to read your favorite book, as Damiano has never read it. rain is mercilesslly pouring outside, but his breath on your skin is keeping you warm and his whole presence (raising and falling of his chest, his heartbeat, his fingers on your skin) bring you so much comfort and make you feel like you are exactly where you should be.
flirting with each other, even though you are already together. sometimes you’d go with the cheesiest pick up lines just to make each other laugh. though, other times it would be so romantic and you’d feel like in that moment you realized your feelings for each other are more than they should be: powerful, like the world is yours, like you have everything, that you’re loved, respected and validated. both of you would try to make each other feel like that all the time (and even those cheesy pick up lines would manage to do it).
imagine going on a short vacation to the seaside with him. it’d be just the two of you, in some small apartment right at the beach. one afternoon it was particularly cloudy, as if the storm was coming, and the wind made your hair dance around your face. still, you jumped into the water and the waves embraced you. tho, you weren’t alone. damiano was there, holding your hand and pulling you to his body. despite the cold water, his body was warm, just like his breath on your shoulder. you looked at him and smiled, and just as he leaned in to kiss you, you pulled him underwater. you laughed and tried to swim away, but his arms curled around your waist and it didn’t matter that he was about to pull you under the surface too, because his touch in that moment just felt so right.
have a lovely day💕

I think you mentioned listening to podcasts? Do you have any favorites to reccommend? I've run out of content :(
that i do !
im not entirely sure what kind of podcast you'd be interested in but i'll throw out a few of the goodies in my huge library of stuff , i'll miss out a few of the HUGE podcasts that have been all over tumblr though
a LOT of it is true crime or human interest stuff , or history because im nerd ,, and a few of these dont have nearly enough attention so [shrug] i'll try to keep this short i guess lol this isnt EVERYTHING ive got in my library or listened series' by any measure
i AM gonna pop a shout to both Stuff You Missed in History Class and Stuff You Should Know from iHeartRadio because their HUGE archives have kept me from losing my mind many times over , and they cover a wide range of both important and wacky topics
BomBARDed (ongoing) this is the only fiction podcast i have happening right now really but its DAMN GOOD ONE .... it's an actual-play D&D 5E podcast in the DMs own musically-inspired world, focussed on a group of multiclass bards going to music school !! and all players (+DM) are members of the Texas band Lindby !! and they actually use and play music in the show with one original song an episode !! Kyle's worldbuilding and storycraft are truly incredible, and (Nick) Goodrich, (also Nick) Spurrier, and Ali's characters are in depth and interesting as well as an absolute powerhouse :') i actually made a piece for its first fanzine, Bardic Dreaming, which published earlier this year and is free to view now, all the players and the community are super wholesome its just very good overall 💙
History & Humans;
Fall of Civilisations (ongoing) legit one of my favourite podcast finds, im so glad my youtube autoplayed one of these ... it took me like 2 hours to realise it was 1) not the same as what was playing before and 2) had been on for 2 hours and wasnt near finished lmao. anyway, this is a series by historical fiction writer Paul Cooper, and is honest to all thats good one of the best documentary series ive encountered in years - and ive consumed a LOT of documentaries. it covered the downfall of various civilisations through history, and the episodes run from an hour to FOUR hours depending on the topic. its so chill to listen to and just get done, but over the pandemic all of the episodes have been given full movie-quality video versions too on youtube if youre more of a visual person.
Casting Lots: A Survival Cannibalism Podcast (on series break) yeah that says that lol ... its a SUPER niche topic but its very interesting and treated very well despite being kind of comical at times, the hosts are just naturally funny lol ... it delves around from the history of cannibalism in whole regions to specific incidents as recently as the 1970s, and of course the first episode is about the Donner Party, and it covers things ive never heard of despite being kind of important ?? anyway Alix and Carmella are good eggs
Sawbones (ongoing) i probably dont need to mention much here other than say that Justin and Sydnee saved me from being SO BORED sooo often, the history of medicine is wacky as hell and its what most of my history GCSE was on so [shrugs]
Cautionary Tales (on series break) this was a wild-card find lol ... it's by Tim Harford "the undercover economist" who writes for the Financial Times, and its topics kind of weave modern topics and science with how to learn from historical errors ... its a bit weird but well worth a go, also each series has a few celebrity guest voice actors which is pretty awesome
Ephemeral (ongoing) this is a very strange but thought provoking series about sounds and other things just barely saved. topics include the last castrato, the hello girls, hand-stamped records, the spread of kīkā kila music, and acoustic fossils of wild places.
Neat! The Boozecast (ongoing) history and bartending whats not to like lol ... hosted by Teylor Smirl and now their dad Tommy, they're just digging around in how important booze is to human culture
True Crime (white collar and weirdness);
Swindled (ongoing) this is an amazing show full stop. A Concerned Citizen details some of the most impactful and unruly things to happen in white collar and corporate crime. very factually accurate but given the sheer bullshit of the topics the deadpan snarking is [chefs kiss] absolutely warranted ..
American Scandal (on series break) this one is a series within a series type, and spends a few episodes at a time poking holes in some of America's biggest scandals, from a dramatised but fact-based point of view. such as what the hell was going on with Enron, how big tobacco was forced to own up to covering its own ass, how Iran-Contra happened, etc. it also now has a sister show called British Scandal, which does the same thing for British cases but with a slightly different format.
Missing in Alaska (finished) this was a fascinating series, a deep dive into what happened to two US government officials who disappeared on a small chartered flight in Alaska in 1972. it goes some really strange places, but it actually turned up a lot of previously unknown information through the audience. John Walczak's new series in a new feed is Missing on 9/11 which looks into what happened to Dr Sneha Philip.
Pretend (ongoing) Host Javier Leiva holds interviews with anyone living a lie, or who have been touched by them. con artists, snake oil salesmen, former cult members, catfishing victims, anyone and everyone.
Power: The Maxwells (finished) hosted by journalist Tara Palmeri, the story of media tycoon Robert Maxwell from nothing to empire to mysterious death and the scandals uncovered after he was gone.
Lets Talk About Sects (ongoing) Sarah Steele covering cults from around the world, in particular those in Australia - where she is from. She often has former members on the show to share their stories, and share knowledge of how they left. each story has the relevant content warnings at the start of each episode.
Brainwashed (finished) investigation of the CIA's covert mind control experiments, centred on the experiments performed at a hospital in Montreal, and its cultural impact.
Dr Death (2 series finished) two series investigating huge cases of fraud and medical malpractice, and how they were brought to a stop. series 1 covers Dr Duntsch and his horribly butchered neurosurgery, series 2 covers Dr Fata and his fraudulent cancer clinic
The Immaculate Deception (finished) untangling the weird and disturbing fertility fraud of Dr Jan Karbaat, who fathered children himself through his fertility clinic, and the impact of his deception. later episodes also touch on other similar cases.
True Crime (Violent/General);
The Casual Criminalist (ongoing) Simon Whistler of-the-many-youtube-channels cold reads a script about the case of the day, with some of his daft commentary thrown in.
Southern Fried True Crime (ongoing) Crimes from the American South hosted by Erica Kelley, she puts all the facts out there but refreshingly for true crime she doesnt hesitate to tell you if she thinks someone is human garbage lol
They Walk Among Us (ongoing) probably one of the most popular UK crime podcasts, very measured and well put together, not weird or annoying about it either.
All Crime No Cattle (ongoing, feed slowed down for now) specifically about crimes from Texas, hosted by Erin and Shay, they're very sensitive hosts and a lot of the cases they cover shed light on why the Texas criminal system is how it is or show an impact at a national level
Canadian True Crime (ongoing) Canadian crime from an Aussie who's lived there for a decade, Kristi is again a sensitive and measured host covering some important topics
True Crime (Violent/Deep Dive);
Hitman (finished) journalist Jasmyn Morris digs around in the sticky tangle around a book published by fringe publisher Paladin Press, and its apparent use as a blueprint in the killing of a mother, her friend and her 8 year old boy for financial gain.
Camp Hell: Anneewakee (ongoing) this series is exploring how a wilderness camp "correctional facility" was endorsed by the Georgia care and juvenile reform system, despite widespread abuses and shady practices the whole time. warning for csa and child cruelty throughout.
True Crime Bullshit (on series break) this one is a huge huge rabbithole but a very interesting one where the host Josh Hallmark has spent years digging into the life and potential crimes of Israel Keyes. Keyes is often mentioned as a serial killer with no pattern, but in picking it apart thats not quite true, and has sparked some re-evaluations of missing persons cases and stumbling upon information the FBI has redacted organically. there's also a series in the middle looking into the crimes of Kelly Cochran
Forgotten: Women of Juárez (finished) this series looks into the huge numbers of missing women of Ciudad Juárez, the strange circumstances surrounding them, and the potential cover-ups and corruptions on both sides of the border, trying to give a voice to all of the forgotten women and girls and their families without answers. the series itself is finished, but a spanish language edition is being released every week now.
aaaaaand i'll call it there before i list everything lol, i hope you find something to plug your boredom hole with !!

Yes yes yes spec Spidey is so good I'm so glad you're watching it! Imo it's the best adaptation. I would love to hear all of your thoughts on it!
Lmao I was planning on not commenting on it to avoid clogging up people's dashboards (also the reason why I've taken to making all the liveblogging of one issue into a single post instead of little comments), but hey, if you insist! I mean, if you really twist my arm!
I am enjoying it! I'm only on ep 6 but I'm definitely enjoying it!
Honestly, the one TV show where the opening credits aren't only watchable, they're (ugh) enjoyable! The song is so great I kinda wonder if it doesn't affect my opinion of the whole show.
The action, especially the web-slinging, is so good! They really have a handle on Peter's agility.
I already know some of the beats they're gonna hit, partly because I got spoiled, partly because I caught some of it when I was younger, but there's stuff I still wonder about. Is Flash gonna get a bit more sympathetic, like in the comics? I don't mean post-Gwen's death and Harry's capture levels of sympathy, but I did notice that he's quite a bit more aggressive than he was in the Ditko era, so I wondered if they're gonna balance it out with his admiration of Spidey and the few sparks of decency he showed back then, too. Then again, he hasn't tried to disguise as someone Peter believed to be a dangerous criminal in order to scare him, or led the whole class to Peter's house so they could see how he beat him up, so. It just seems like they traded some of his particular dislike of Peter for his sense of overall nobility, you know?
Eddie Brock being Peter's "bro" was a huge surprise! Didn't see that one coming at all. I do know that some beats will remain the same, so I wonder how he'll make the change into Venom.
I am kind of upset that they made Hobie a mean jock. At least make him a nice jock, like Rand(y)! Oh, well, there's still 20 episodes for him to redeem himself. Do I think it will happen? No, but a girl can dream.
Between the Raimi movies and this show, this was the decade of making Ock sympathetic, huh?
Norman's voice is sooooo evil.
I usually dislike when retellings try to sort of compress all the origin stories? You know, like Spider-Man Chapter One? This time, though, I'm digging it. I think it's because it's a whole new thing instead of something that would replace the old stuff.
I think they hit a nice compromise between not repeating the origin story (even though it hadn't been done that many times by then) and honoring Ben with the first episode. It showed both his emotional importance, since both May and Peter talked about him, and how his death affected them practically. Like, the first episode opens to an unbalanced household for the Parkers. I think they're gonna show it anyway, eventually, too?
Gwen's more bearable than she was originally, but she's a bit peripheral, isn't she? At least, she has been, so far. Of course, they had to set up an introduction for Peter as well as at least one villain each episode (in that sense, streamlining it with pre-existing minor characters like Marko and O'Hirn [I JUST realized that's a pun for horn] was pretty genius), build up the Big Man reveal, and have a Peter subplot to balance the Spider-Man one for each episode, it's no wonder she's been kept on the sidelines a bit, even if she'll be a major love interest later. It's not like she can contribute much to the action plot, like Harry.
That said, I also don't like her voice acting - I don't know why tbh. Or Mary Jane's, for that matter! I've only heard the jackpot line, so far, but that's like, the line you don't mess up. I don't know, she might redeem herself. it just seemed too whispery.
That said, making Liz latina, both in looks and in how she speaks (I mean, I'm not sure I recognize it as a Spanish accent, but I wouldn't, would I? I just speak it), paints a potentially interesting picture of her social standing. I mean, in the comics, while still nicer than Flash even before she got a crush on Peter, she was also very much her own girl - outspoken, resolute and a leader. Also very rich. There haven't really been any reference to her economic background, yet, but her accent brings the question of how long has her family been settled in New York, as opposed to the 616 Allans, who had a fancy hotel that had existed at least long enough for Ben Urich to have taken her wife dancing there.
Making Martha Curt's partner was a good call, as long as it lasted. It did away with the passivity of her old role without losing the effectiveness of having someone to worry for Curt. I do wish they'd had him befriend Spider-Man, if only because I liked that friendship in the comics, but I understand that they had to streamline a lot of things. Still, it would've been an interesting contrast of not trusting Peter but being one of Spidey's only friends. I wonder if he'll come back. I wonder if any of the villains will come back.
There's something so funny about Peter just. Shooting his shot with a 20 year old Betty. His game was impressive enough in the comics, but the guts here.
Poor Sally. First they kill you, then they whitewash you and make you a mean girl. I mean, she wasn't a saint or anything, but, you know.
I think that’s all for now lmao.
