In Bliss's defense
Sit down, and look at the pretty water. We need to have a talk.
Tumblr media
Anyone of the PPG fandom, who cares, the hate around Bliss is overrated and leaves a more hurtful message than people realize.
And I was a part of that crowd at some point, but I was wrong, and im calling myself out.
People virtue signaling hate around her always somewhat rubbed me the wrong way, especially when the rant boiled down to "She's pandering to black people!" Erhm, she's dark skinned, so any darker skinned person of any race can identify with her, and in that case...
"so what if she's here for pandering?"
For a decade, the ppg has pandered to white people. There are no diverse people of color from the cast. Also, whenever this topic of "inclusivity in media" comes up, there's this crowd that runs up with their shields wailing, "but kids or 'x crowd' shouldn't care about race! Or the way main character's look! It should be about the message."
And then the 2023 Live Action Little Mermaid came along, and society really showed their true colors.
There were people, who spoke different languages, in the depths of the comments, reprimanding the idea of Halle Bailey playing Ariel. Black people were posting these reaction videos condemning Disney for changing the race of such a "beloved classic" and white people working together to make A.I renditions of "what should have been."
And that is such a traumatic experience that gets gaslit into "if it doesn't matter what Ariels race is, why change her race?"
That question was asked so many times, ironically.
So, Bliss is what happens, when people who are honest about imagery realize their is a lack of a common worldly reality in a popular media. Why not have a dark skinned Powerpuff girl, when younger Dark-skinned girls and boys will definitely watch the show?
Tumblr media
Representation, seriously, does matter. And children of color shouldn't be denied pandering just because, we as a society, have our grandstand hang-ups over 'what is pandering, what is not'.
At this point, we can't tell that non poc characters ARE being pandered, 24/7.
I have a theory that in the late 90's to early 2000's media shifted into white fragility code. Basically it was an unspoken rule of, "if we don't talk about it, it doesn't exist!" It was the height of excluding poc characters. It was the height of reducing poc roles to their stereotypes. It was the height of recognizing "this is the white version, this is the black version."
White people were behind a lot of popular media, and they were very scared to talk about black people. How couldn't they when civil rights and slavery were right up the crack of their asses? Hell, as of September 17th, 2023, Ruby Bridges is still alive and well.
Tumblr media
Yes, her!
I feel like this created an Era of normalization. This notion that "white people can be anything! But people of color must ALWAYS be people of color."
Another day, I will talk about how white people have to shoe horn 'minority tropes' into even their fanatical stories to create empathy, which is always a glaring red flag when I see white people attempting to talk about privellege with monster 'white coded' cartoon characters. But for now, I'll say this.
Bliss' personality is mid at worse.
Okay, so people latched unto the fact that she gets angry as a dark skinned character to dismiss her. Mainly, black people were upset about this.
I'm starting to see the problem with that.
People say that her unique, colorful design is bad.
Subjective, but also their are underlying tones.
People say her story messes up the Powerpuff girls story, which is my biggest red flag.
Okay, let me just get something off my chest.
My fellow black women and girls who are also creators and are creating. Let me remind you.
We, as black women and girls are allowed to portray anger.
Flaws.
Misfortune.
Unattractiveness.
Non conformating ideas.
Trauma.
Etc
And still be interesting, likeable main character's without being urbanized.
This also goes to Poc who are Dark-skinned and non poc who are creating diverse casts.
But mainly black women, as I've learned it's best to give advice, like that, within my own community. It is important that we prioritize our image or else we get .. well, what I'm ranting about.
Anyway, just because a dark skinned person is non urban does not mean they have to be this... precious, agreeable cinnamon bun 24/7.
That makes the most blandest characters.
They have no real stakes nor relatability!
Take some notes from Japanese animation. Japanese people do not focus their stories on 'what it means to be Japanese' 24/7 in anime.
And I'm tired of westerners turning Dark-skinned girls and women into 'sista soldier's ✊️' everytime they need a dilemma on a screen!
Bliss is a cute, fun, character who has temper tantrums that effects her story.
We are allowed to do that! To portray a dark skinned character with conflict! To show that she has flaws!
This isn't a stereotype! What the actual hell!
What would make it a stereotype is if she was being shown in a horrible light. Like she's overly sassy, and that's her only quality. She's been reduced to constantly telling the crowd, "hey, I'm dark skinned! Look, I'm about to do something 'only dark skinned people do', amirite? Amirite?" 😃
Bliss' situation is non color coded. We all know someone who deals with bad news, badly. Hell, Buttercup from the og series is more of a 'stereotype to Black people' then bliss is, and society knows it! When they go to make anyone Dark-skinned, more than likely they'll make it Buttercup. Hell, even the show runners know that shit!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That... is a stereotype.
Because, obviously, the cute bubbly one, can't be black. Nor can the quality leader everyone wants to be.
But the tough one with an attitude? Um, duh!
And I'm not gonna lie, I love me some Buttercup. I'll do an essay on her character someday, but I'm just trying to point out a very real problem.
It's no coincidence that when they wanna shoehorn diversity in, they have no issue choosing Buttercup over and over again.
That in the grander scheme of things, put what it means to be a poc girl, in a box. Very upsetting when you see it for what it is.
Bliss has tempers because it contributes to her story and character arch, two things people creating poc characters are very afraid to do. Because we can't have dark skinned characters with traits that are not outright agreeable.
Tumblr media
Or 100% liberal.
Even though we have a history of white characters that are flawed, controversial, and crass that go down in history as icons.
Because, the reality is, no one likes a black bitch! It's enough if she's black, but now she's a bitch!?
Goes back into my theory of when white fragility was at its height in the early 2000's. All these white bitches were getting movie lead roles and stamps of approval.
WHERE THE HELL WERE THE BLACK BITCHES?
Oh yeah. They were getting urbanized and glorifying dysfunction from within their respective communities 🙄
Not saying white women were always represented in a healthy way, but they were... roles of interest, desirability, nurture, femininity, images of ideal, relatability, etc.
The list goes on.
And that affected the way society views how to create poc. Suddenly, if you don't wanna be offensive, just have a poc being the ambitious voice of reason! If they're not that, they must have a pinch of black characiture and be the most grounded.
Tumblr media
Again, sad really.
So bliss to me, is an okay character. She's cute and funny, and she has an actual story.
Sure there wasn't an original 4th Powerpuff girl, but it's not like she ruins the pre existing story. She's another character introduced with her own narrative. And I can respect that the creators of the 2016 reboot noticed the importance of showing that literally ANYONE can be a Powerpuff Girl, without chickening out and creating another non poc design and minority coding them.
Like, there is an official dark skinned Powerpuff girl. A CANON DARKSKINNED POWERPUFF GIRL. THAT IS AWESOME.
Tumblr media
So good job 2016 reboot. You did something right.

Here's a rant. I've been making posts about black representation on another web site mainly about black rep in superheroes and comics. This girl and her friends kept commenting on than that they only care about good stories. The girl and her friends didn't seem to understand what I was saying and they seemed young so I tried to explain why representation and diversity in media is important in a easy to understand way but then she said that caring about skin tones and bringing up race with stories was toxic.
At first I assume her and her friends were white, cause I've only seen white people use the whole good stories only matter excuse so I told her "you must not be a person of color cause people of color understand what I'm saying in my posts." But she and her friends said they were Native Americans.
Then it became a argument about diversity vs good stories. After politely trying to explain to them why representation and diversity matter I decided to block them and delete their comments off my posts cause it feels like they were purposely misunderstanding me, not listing to me and their comments felt like microaggressions so I didn't want to see every time I went to look at them. But the next day the girl and her friends were making posts on different accounts about me saying I hate white people and saying I'm a bully. I love white people but as a black person I was just spreading awareness about black representation in my posts and they ganged up on me.
Good stories rant anon again some things I forgot to mention in my rant is the whole good stories only matter thing is said by racist white people alot to derail talks about representation especially in the Comicsgate movement. Since I was talking about black rep in superheroes and comics them saying only good stories matter did set up some alarms but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt since they were must likely teens but them the girl said bringing race up in media was toxic was a huge red flag. After that it was like the girl and her friends were refusing to listen to me which lead to me blocking them. When they created other accounts to lie about me saying I hate white people and I was a bully it was like harassment so I reported them and block them. They seem to have stopped. I almost sorta doubt they were Native Americans cause people of color would never say things like "diversity doesn't matter only good stories matter" unless they were a pick me person of color.
_____________
First of all I'm sorry that happened to you. but honestly just because she was arguing that she wanted "good stories" doesn't mean she's not NA you know? There's plenty of POC who buy into the whole internalized racism thing and don't even realize that the "good stories" they're promoting are all by and about white men.
I cannot tell you how many POC by into white supremacist talking points just like the whole "bringing race up in media is toxic". Like honestly it takes years to become aware of the harm that white supremacist ideology does to us all. I'm glad you blocked them and reported them but honestly everyone comes to their realizations about white supremacist ideology differently. While you think it may have been a waste of time you never know if someone else reading the thread maybe noticed and is now thinking differently.
Don't be disheartened and don't give up! there's no shortcuts to unpacking our internalized bigotry and you're probably right that they are just very young teens.
here's one example of studies done about why children of color need to see themselves in cartoons. https://theconversation.com/why-its-so-important-for-kids-to-see-diverse-tv-and-movie-characters-92576
I'll try to get you more studies that exemplify why we need diverse media but atm I'm on my way out the door to get to work. *hugs* nonny I'm glad you're fighting the good fight.

Are R. L. Stine's modern Goosebumps protagonists anything other than white? Other than cis, or at least straight? Are they all still just straight white middle-class kids?
I'm not asking out of salt, I'm genuinely curious.

Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Tumblr media
This was a 5 Star read for me. I'll admit when I first started this book, I struggled, not due to the book though I was just obviously not in a good headspace. Fast forward a week and to a healthier mindset, this book was beautifully written.
I loved these individual characters and them as a whole was even better, the dynamics made this such a cosy adventure while also making the stakes of the mission seem higher.
I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book 🥰
There is diverse representation in both main and side characters; racial, sexuality and disability.
Make sure you check for any content warnings, as the very first chapter has some heavy themes. Violence, blood and death as to be expected, torture and sacrifice is a recurring theme with the gods, mentions of childhood abuse/exploitation. As well as a lot of trauma. Once again check for content warnings as I'm sure I've missed something else.
Finished 5th of October.

One thing I don't think people fully understand the importance of, is diversity shown to children.
For example, I was shopping the other day, and there was a Muslim doll, with all the other dolls. Two boys, must have been no more than five, got really excited, they were delighted to see representation of themselves
Another example, when I was younger, I read a book that involved queer characters. I fully believe that it contributed greatly to my self acceptance, and understanding of myself.
Representation is important.

Hey
- Make characters OTHER THAN VILLAINS fat too
- No not just the greedy or food loving ones
- Not just older people or moms
- Make more characters fat
- Like actually fat
- With double chins, bellies, thick arms, fat necks, rolls
- And let them be love interests or protagonists or in respected positions.
- Let them be portrayed as hot. While being fat yes

It wouldn’t be historically accurate for my story to include BIPOC!
This is an argument often made about European-style fantasy media like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Disney’s Frozen. Audiences, often white, assume that due to the majority-white setting, adding any visible number of BIPOC to the story would be unrealistic.
What these critics fail to realize is that BIPOC do in fact live, and have lived, in these settings, and records of BIPOC presence in places assumed to be majority-white have been buried, written out, or not taught due to white supremacist and/or colonial bias in the field of history. There are historical European settings that were far more diverse than is often portrayed. Consider:
The Moorish Empire exerted an extensive influence over life and culture in Southern Europe from Spain from 711 to 1492
The Ottomans were heavily involved in European affairs up until the treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, but still considered a part of Europe even through the 19th century
The sheer size of the Roman Empire ensured the continued movement of people from various backgrounds within the Mediterranean well until the end of the Byzantine Empire.
“Historical accuracy” should not be used as an excuse for media to be exclusively white in its casting. While there are places which are or were predominantly white, there will always be factors like global trade and immigration that bring multiculturalism to their doors.
And even if the presence of a certain demographic is unrealistic for a certain setting? Consider that we’ve accepted far worse inaccuracies in historical fiction in the name of artistic license. Consider that our understanding of human history is, and will always be, incomplete.

ES POR ESTO QUE LA REPRESENTACIÓN ES IMPORTANTE
THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS
[trans]
Interviewer: Your speech and your mission have always been worthy representation and respect above all. Especially about equal opportunities for the "moreno" (brown) people, for racialised people, not only from Mexico but from all of Latin America, from all over the world. And now you're here. You're K'uk'ulkaan, you're Namor, you're a Funko (toy). You're all that.
Tenoch: Ah, huevo! (kinda like "oh, god" / "oh, yeah", happily)
Interviewer: So, what do you think it'll mean for representation in Latin America and Mexico, for all of us who are getting this important message?
Tenoch: The only thing I want is that the next time boys and girls look at themselves in the mirror they feel proud of that reflection. That they see there was never anything wrong with them but rather with the eyes that judged them. If that happens, I've made it.
Interviewer: Thank you so much.
(They hug. The interviewer's been rather emotional the whole time but now they start to really cry.)
Tenoch: It hurts, dude, doesn't it? But we're going to begin healing. (He gives the interviewer a kiss on the forehead)

Here have some scientific elaboration for the people who still are in denial that Babe is bottoming. And not Charlie possibly riding him.
(I heard some folks didn't want to believe Babe is a bottom since ep1. I also saw such comments for a different drama where people were in denial for the same stupid reasons) 🤷‍♂️
Or maybe I just love that they very subtly show Babes leg position. Very minimal but they show it.

Legendborn book review
Tumblr media
I read this book because it's been recommended everywhere and I really love YA plus it's been a hot second since I read fantasy. Lastly I'm trying to diversify my reads and this fit well ^.^ I'm not really its intended audience since I'm not a young adult exactly but I really loved it ❤️
What I liked
Bree is super relatable and sweet but won't let anyone walk all over her. She's a strong character and I really loved going through her journey with her. I'm not African American but I'm not white either so I related to her in my own way as a latina. The latino community along with other poc have similar but different experiences with marginalization. I really liked the way the book shed light on that. The history behind the Arthurian legends is super white so I love that the author calls that out. I study English literature it's what my degree is in and I'm so exhausted by how saturated literature is with Eurocentralisn so I got really giddy that the author called this out and I was more willing to read it because it gives the impression Tracy Deonn will do something different and all her own with the Authorian legends and she does!!!
I'm not a huge fan on Arthurian Legend and I really thought that would kill the book for me but the author eases readers into it well. At times it goes a little too quick so I had to Google it but overall it was good. Pacing of the overall story was done pretty well too. The fighting descriptions and descriptions of the monsters, creatures, etc is pretty vivid. The characters (for the most part) are pretty diverse and fun and there's lots of LGBTQIA+ representation which I loved as a queer person.
The grief Bree experiences is portrayed so well. I love the confusion, denial, hurt, and sense of loss she feels it really made me sympathize with her and reflect on my own loss. Honestly, I think I cried. The way the author developed Bree with this grief is amazing.
The ending with the reveal regarding the Authorian legends and the scions was my favorite part. I won't spoil it.
Some things I didn't like
The biggest one for me is *drum rolllllllllllll*
Tumblr media
Nick
Feel free to rip my head off for this but Nick is just not a fun or well developed character. Maybe it's my bias towards him for being a priviledged white guy with "charm"? I'll give a little leverage to him for that I guess. The cute romantic moments between him and Bree are cute(I won't lie, I blushed at some moments lol) but Nick seems like a flat character with little personality. His problems seem so trivial it makes me like him a lot less. The charm doesn't land well too often for me. He's very Mary sue. Maybe it's because he spends so much time with Bree that it makes him seem flat compared to her? I'm not sure honestly.
CON There are too many characters
There are so many characters that I had to reread it or use Google and that made it hard to feel attached to them. When you're establishing a world for the first time readers will focus more on the world than trying to remember several characters so it became daunting and more effort than it was worth.
*INCOMING SPOILER*
Tumblr media
*INCOMING SPOILER*
Tumblr media
Going off the too many characters point.
When Fitz dies I didn't care too much because again there were too many characters I couldn't wrap my mind around each one. I felt for Evan but not too much since again I feel like I hardly knew these characters. It makes the grief the characters experiencie kinda mid and I just kind of flipped through those parts. Bree's grief about her mom is powerful because the memories we are shown, the personality described, and the mom title she holds. The other characters are not too developed so it's just not a powerful sense of loss for readers. This was like the Percy Jackson series which I have the same complaints about.
CON: The love triangle
Sel is annoying at first he's untrusting, pessimistic, and sometimes antagonistic, but later we see his attitude is rightfully earned. He quickly becomes a loveable character and he falls for Bree. I actually think I like this better than BreexNick but I think Sel and Bree's interest with each other is subtle then hits full force out of nowhere towards the end which doesn't sit too well for me. Sel was also crushing on Nick but Nick didn't recipricate so it makes this a true love triangle since it seems that we currently don't know Sel's feelings towards Nick.
YA is always adding these love triangle and it's just so overused I find myself rolling my eyes when authors do this. I was really hoping this book wouldn't go down that route but here we are.
END OF SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
Those are the last of the spoilers.
Recap(if you're still here lol)
4/5 stars.
I really recommend this book if you like fantasy and YA. If you're looking for fantasy with queer rep check this out ❤️ there are a lot of profound statements and experiences through a POC lens which is great. If you're going through grief and need a hug this book will give it to you and help you too. If you like cutesy romance this book has that too.
