The cold of this Hawkins was much more bone chilling than one would expect in early May in Indiana, but this was not your Hawkins. These were your friends, but not your house, nor Eddie’s trailer, and these vines are definitely not native to Hawkins. You had a well constructed plan. You, Dustin and Eddie lured demobats away from Vecna’s lair so Robin, Steve and Nancy could take him down. There were backup plans for backup plans. You had all promised each other that your lives mattered more. Your best friend in the whole world had always reminded you that there was no shame in running.
He was the one that grabbed your hand and pulled you away from bullies trying to steal your wallet and break your new DnD figurines freshman year. He had told you to run from Hopper when he had found the two of you smoking in the abandoned creel house two weeks before graduation, long before you knew the structure would be part of your demise.
You took shelter in Eddie’s trailer adorned with sheets of metal and an ominous hole in the roof. The air was thick with spores and must. Things seemed just like you remembered them, but dark and twisted. You could feel the acid in your stomach threatening to spill over. Your job was simple, because you did the same things in the real world: you were to set up Eddie’s amps and speakers to make sure you could get the loudest gain possible. Your proficiency in the AV club in junior high, as well as your involvement in Hellfire garnered you the title of Corroded Coffin’s very own roadie (not that you went anywhere but the Hideout, but you were all hopeful). You grounded your cables, plugged in your amps and were ready to hand Eddie the connection over to his sweetheart.
-
Since you had arrived in the upside down a couple hours ago, everything in your body had been screaming that something was wrong, that something bad was going to happen. You hated how at home you felt in the eerie trailer. This wasn’t your home. This wasn’t Eddie’s home. This was home to monsters and evil, but something in your brain told you this is where you would stay. You couldn’t help but be snapped out of this unease by Eddie’s childlike excitement at his guitar that laid pristinely on his mirror. He was right, it did seem like she was destined to be here. He slung his guitar over his head and bound to the roof in excitement, you and Dustin hastily in tow.
-
You tightened his headband over his luscious waves and looked deeply into his eyes. He peered back at you, his gaze of determination and excitement matched your unreadable stare. You studied him carefully.
“It’s going to be okay. I promise.” Eddie spoke into your hair as he pulled you in for a tight hug. He sealed his words with a kiss, as if it was to plant that thought into your brain.
“Okay, but you need to promise me that when we tell you to pull the plug that you do. This is life or death Eddie.” He winced at you using his name. It was never Eddie, only Teddy or Eds… he even preferred it when you called him an asshole rather than his real name. He knew you meant business. His face drained of the excitement and mirrored your unease.
“Nothing’s gonna happen. We have a plan, sweetheart.” He grabbed your shoulders and looked you in the eyes. He was making a promise. A vow. Definitely not the kind of vow you were hoping for from your best friend…
-
It was difficult to admit your feelings for Eddie. He always seemed untouchable, like he was meant for something greater than you. You suppressed them, hoping that your heart would suffice with Eddie being your best friend. You were stubborn and unwilling to threaten the best friendship you would likely ever have.
-
The guitar was plugged in and the pick around his neck ripped off. You looked to Dustin who signaled to the other party through the walkie talkies you had. You cranked the volume on the amp and gave Eddie a curt nod. He blew you a small kiss and a thumbs up before strumming a booming chord on the guitar. His fingers moved expertly as he riffed through Master of Puppets like he was the one that wrote it. He was in his element. Tears flowed freely from your eyes as you stared in awe. This was his rockstar moment. Here is where he got to shine. The sense of dread pinged your heart again, you feared this would be his only time to show off his talents, or that they would be saved only for an audience of demobats. Your eyes were ripped from the mophead thrashing to the reddened sky. What looked like clouds were breaking into small clusters of wings. Thunder accompanied the paranormal screeches of monsters heading straight for you.
“Eddie….” You yelled. Dustin held onto your shoulder.
“Hold on, he’s got a bit more time. 30 Second, Eddie!” your rockstar looked over to the two of you with a nod. The cloud of bats trudged closer and closer. You could feel your heartbeat in your throat and you looked to Dustin.
“They’re too close. He’s gonna get caught up here. Dustin we need to go.”
“If he stops too soon they’re just gonna go back to Creel house! We need them to stay here! Let him go!” Dustin snapped. You bit your nails as you watched your best friend play the song that just a week ago he was sitting in his room learning while you read Eddie’s copy of Lord of the Rings. You sob quietly as your head flips from the metalhead to the impending doom in the sky. They were mere meters away from being able to swoop in and grab you. You pulled the chord connecting your speaker to Eddie’s guitar with a scream.
“Let’s go, Eddie! NOW.” The boy looked at you in desperate confusion as you ran at him and grabbed his hand. The three of you launched yourself off the roof of the trailer and to the caged front door. Eddie slammed and barred the door behind him. The three of you stood silently as you listened to the bats pelt the roof of the trailer. You let out a sigh of small relief as the two boys jumped and cheered. You celebrated too soon, as you look up to the ceiling and see a bat wriggling through the fan vent.
“Eddie!” The boy looked up to where you were pointing and thrust his shield into the gap. You ran to the back room of the trailer to see a swarm of demobats squeezing themselves through another hole they had created from the fan in Eddie’s room. You slammed the door shut with a gasp. You looked back to the boys, expression grim and face pale.
“Time to go. We can’t hold them from both rooms.” Eddie and Dustin nodded. You both helped Dustin out of the portal in the trailer’s ceiling. Eddie looked at you, ready to help you up.
“What the fuck are you doing?” you pushed him away. “Get up the rope, Eddie. Let’s go.”
“I’m not going to leave you here for a second. You go and take care of Dustin, I gotta hold these fuckers off.” The boy took another step towards you in an attempt to lift you to the rope.
“Are you insane? That’s not part of the plan! We all go through the portal and we seal it from the other end. That’s what we agreed on. You promised! You said you wouldn’t leave me and we would stay together so either you go up or we both stay.” You yelled with a shove. You couldn’t help but sob at the boy. This is what you were afraid of. Your plan was quickly dissolving into nothingness for you. But you could get Eddie out.
“Jesus Christ I am not letting you stay!”
“Why Eddie?”
“Because I love you okay? I am in love with you! And we don’t have time and I am not going to let anything happen to you. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.” the boy cried. “So please, tell me you love me and get up the rope and hopefully this isn’t the last time we see each other.” Eddie grabbed your face and looked into your eyes, desperate for you to listen. You pressed your lips to his and pulled away from him. You could hear the wooden door cracking behind you. You were out of time.
You pushed Eddie to the ground and ran through the front door, screaming as loudly as you possibly could with the little amount of air you could breathe. You ran as fast as your legs could carry you. You unsheathed the makeshift spear you had made before your assault and turned when you got to the edge of the trailer park. This would give Eddie and the others enough time to get to safety. Your body was stiff from shock and your brain could barely comprehend what you were seeing in front of you, but you were ready. If this meant that you could keep your party safe, you weren’t afraid to die.
There was a cacophony of flapping wings and shrieks as the demobats tornadoes around you. You desperately poked at whatever body parts you could. You swung desperately through the cloud in front of you. Suddenly, you were on your back, your head spinning from the hard hit of the concrete. You kicked and swung your spear as frantically as you could, but you were no match for the fifty or sixty odd monsters on top of you. Your first ear splitting scream split the flapping of wings when one of the bats swiped their talons through your abdomen. Bat tails had restrained your arms and legs and you were helpless. You closed your eyes and hoped that things would move quickly from this moment on. You felt the heat of blood pooling out of your stomach as more bats attached to nibble on your sides. Your vision went blurry when you felt another tail wrap tightly around your throat and pull. You tried your best to scream, to try and let some of the pain escape your body, but it was no use. You rasped a sob as more blood and flesh left your weak body. You wanted your Eddie. You wanted to be on his couch watching a movie. You wanted this to be a nightmare that you were going to wake up from any moment and to be comforted by your best friend. You let the sobs flow as freely as they could as darkness engulfed your vision.
What seemed like hours later, your eyes were flung open by shrill screams of demobat death and heat on your face. You could hear familiar screams but were too weak to move any part of your body. You could feel demo tails around your extremities but they were no longer squeezing you. You could smell burning flesh. All around you, but it wasn’t your own from what you could tell.
You felt a thud next to you and your eyes widened in relief when you saw Eddie kneeled beside you. He picked you up by your shoulders and laid you in his lap. His sobs were uncontrollable. You reached your blood covered hand to his face. Was he real or was this heaven? You had never been so happy to see him. He began frantically, but gently wiping at your face, you were sure it was stained with blood. Breathing was becoming a struggle again and you had to make peace with this being the last time you might ever see Eddie again.
You reached up to touch his face, also adorned with scrapes and bruises.
“Wh-what happened?” You croaked.
“You’re a pain in the ass and got yourself fucked up.” Eddie sniffles “but we found fire. Fire is what hurts them.”
“Eddie it hurts.” you cry, tears now freely flowing down your face. “I don’t want this to be the last time I get to look at your face.” Eddie frantically shook his head at you.
“No… no no no this isn’t going to be the last time. I made you a promise you just need to promise me you’re gonna hold on a bit longer okay? Dustin is on the way with help we’re gonna get you out of here.” You cried as you shook your head.
“Did you know that I’ve been in love with you since freshman year?” you giggled weakly. “I’ve been in love with you since I met you, Teddy.” Your pet name made his heart soar.
“I want you to tell me all about it when you’re safe and home. Please, Y/N. Hold on for me please. We have so much left to do. You can’t leave me yet.” Eddie’s tears dropped onto your face and you felt ease. As much as you didn’t want to leave him, your eyes were getting heavy. You were so tired and everything hurt.
“I wanna keep my promise, Eddie… But I’m so tired.”
“You have to stay awake, sweetheart. We’re gonna get you help okay? And once you’re all better I’m gonna take you out on a date because that’s what you deserve okay? Think about our date and just hold on okay?” You couldn’t help your eyes from fluttering open and closed. Eddie lightly tapped on your cheeks to keep you conscious but his efforts were slowly becoming moot.
“Tell me about our date, Eddie. Let me go to something sweet so I’ll have it to think about forever.”
“No, Y/N I’m gonna show you instead. Please don’t leave me. Please. I’ll go instead but you gotta stay with me please.”
The last thing you remember before you were plunged into darkness were Eddie’s lips on yours again, accompanied by his wet sobs decorating streaks of tears onto your face.
Then there was nothing.
