Obviously I need to ask you about your Coldflash Royalty AU <3

Yessss thank you!

I fear the placeholder title may be a bit misleading so allow me to clarify; Barry’s royalty (a prince), Len is not but his father was Captain of the royal guard (also, it is through writing this that I learned much of my ‘knowledge’ of royalty comes from Disney movies💀)

Shortly before the events of the story, the kingdom of Central is overthrown. No one knows how he managed to do it, the castle had been thought to be impenetrable to anyone not wanted… alas, Eobard Thawne invaded and killed the king and queen in their own throne room; sparing the prince.

Now, Leonard Snart has been invited to an event celebrating the new king’s victory. He attends, more to get a lay of the land if you will, but ends up getting much more than he bargained for.

Excerpt from chapter 1 (and disclaimer that everything is in flux because it’s still draft one)

Len strode over to the throne, loud enough as to alert the prince of his arrival. Forced to kneel beside the throne, he was dressed in clean, noble garments, and a golden band of metal had been affixed to his neck as well as shackles around his ankles, but he appeared to be unharmed. Still, Len highly doubted that. The outfit was just a bit too clean, covering a bit too much skin. He couldn’t jump to conclusions however. Len knelt down next to Barry, an effort to humiliate him just a bit less, perhaps. “Prince,” He said, in a tone slightly softer than his usual drawl.

Barry looked over at him, well, tried to. The golden collar was attached to a short length of chain bolted to the ground; restricting his movement heavily. “What do you want?” His voice was quite hoarse and had a slight crack to it, but still stronger than expected.

Coldflash Events Winter Week 2022

Prompt: Ice Skating

“Barry, don’t.”

“I know it’s a bad idea.”

“Then. Don’t. Do. It.”

“I’m gonna do it.”

With that, Barry pushed himself away from the edge and across the frozen lake. At Flash speeds.

Predictably, his skates slid over the near frictionless ice so that Barry had basically no stopping power.

The tree he ran into, however, had plenty of stopping power.

Once the crashing stopped, Leonard sighed and skated over to fetch his idiot boyfriend.

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

Honestly, it’s hard to say! I usually get a vague idea for a fic concept and build around that. Sometimes they’re inspired by canon events, like Barry being a bartender in the comics, or by popular fic trends from other fandoms (for example, I was inspired to write the magic mistletoe from Rogues & Mistletoe because I’d seen a few of them in a different fandom.) Oh, and one time I did get an idea from a Coldflash dream I had where Len was the Grim Reaper and Barry was a serial killer, haha, that was a weird one.

4. How do you choose which fics to write?

Well, they choose me, really XD I write mostly what inspires me in the moment, which is why I have so many WIPs. But it’s also true that I try harder to force myself to continue a fic if it gets a lot of response, as opposed to some of my other projects, which aren’t as popular.

6. What’s the last line you wrote?

Then he turns to Joe, daring him to criticize them.

8. Post an out-of-context spoiler from a wip.

“I mean, we’re going to be together for the next fifty or sixty years, so that should be enough time, right?”

10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?

Multiple WIPs for sure, although lately I’ve tried very hard to stay focus on only two i.e. Chapter 5 of my Vegas fic and the WIP I’m working on for the Coldflash event. I’m easily distracted though so that’s a fucking problem XD

13. Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

Sometimes! It really depends on my mood and I find a lot of music too distracting so it has to be a specific type of song. Recently I’ve been listening to Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter when I write :)

How many works do you have on AO3? 82.

What’s your total A03 word count? 648,300 (quite pleased with that - a lot of words of fic in six years!)

What fandoms do you write for? In terms of what I've published - Mostly Arrowverse, with a little bit of Buffy and the Good Place (and I'm currently dipping my toe into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fandom event). In terms of what I have not published - so many fandoms. Way too much Star Trek and, again, Buffy.

What are your top five fics by kudos? - Can’t Take That Away From Me (Coldflash identity porn). - Better Latte Than Never (the meet-cute prequel to the above Coldflash, and I actually hope to finish that series soon!) - [A fic that I'm embarrassed to have as 3rd highest kudos so eh] - The Bed (The Good Place, Chidi/Eleanor/Tahani). I'm really pleased that's still high on the list, because I think it's for the writing as much as the ship. - Unspeakable (DCTV Coldwave). I think the high kudos is mainly because it's been published so long - I wrote it years ago.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Always. And I say so at the end of every fic. I adore comments, so I feel like I should acknowledge them. Even if my thanks are really boring some days!

What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? So many to choose from! But in terms of angsty endings, probably First Time (Westhallen time travel post-Eddie's death).

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? It might be the Stealing Time/Saving Time series (Coldwestallen, Len with Oculus powers), where Barry, Len and Iris kind of get everything they want, in a way I think makes sense for this version of them.

Do you get hate on your fic? Only once, and I don't know if it even counts as hate, but it was someone who got mad about one of my neurodivergent headcanons - which was more of a surprise than anything, as those usually get great comments. I got so much support from my fandom friends about it that I felt much better. :D

Do you write smut? On occasion, but I try not to. No one needs to read my grey ace ass trying to write sex in a vaguely convincing way (and failing).

Do you write crossovers? Not yet... but let's say I've been working on a Faith Lehane/Leonard Snart fic for ages, that will probably never see the light of day at this point. It's fun though!

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of, but I can't imagine anyone bothering with my fics!

Have you ever had a fic translated? I don't think so, but I've had podfic made <3 The awesome @litrapod turned Fireworks (Coldwave) into a great podfic, which made me so happy.

Have you ever co-written a fic? A few times! Including with @achangeinpriorities. Top tip, beta readers can make great co-writers!

What‘s your all-time favourite ship? That question is too hard and I will never answer it but also it's Coldwave. Or Faith/Buffy. Or... Nope I'm not starting down this road :D

What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I *really* wish I'd been able to finish Take The Keys (And Drive Forever) - Lisa Snart/Caitlin Snow, spooky fic - but I just ran out of ideas for it. Maybe one day...

What’s your writing strengths? Questions about my strengths are a challenge! I've had some nice comments about my writing of character dynamics.

What’s your writing weaknesses? I really struggle with dialogue. You'll see me try out many different ways of writing it, throughout my fic back catalogue, as I attempt to make it work. I think I'm getting better, but slowly!

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? If it was a good fit for a character - like if Hartley Rathaway was being snarky in Latin - I might give it a go, but I wouldn't try it very often. Too easy to get wrong, in too many ways.

First fandom you wrote for? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I never shared those early fics anywhere. It's for the best!

Favourite fic you’ve ever written? I've written 82 fics this is very difficult! This answer would probably change if you asked me another time, but I think it might still be the Retired Rogues series, in which Coldwave retire and hijinks ensue. Both were early fics, so my style has changed a lot since then, but they stick in my mind as being a lot of fun to write. I'm not sure who's done this already, so sorry if I tag you and you already have... 22. What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again?

The question of a lifetime haha

When it comes to coldflash I think there's just something so compelling about their dynamic in terms of there being so many parallels there, and yet so many differences ("speed and cold are opposites" lives in my brain rent free honestly). It's quite challenging to get them to fit together when they have such different outlooks and, honestly, when Len specifically is so emotionally repressed that even getting him to confess his feelings is like pulling teeth, but again, Barry is so free with his emotions that it's another fascinating aspect of the contrast between them

Then there's also the fact that of course I adore them so much as individual characters and I love to explore how they tick individually as well as how they come together in a romantic context, there's so much interesting character work one can do when playing with these two, I could play in that sandbox all day

33. Give your writing a compliment.

Hnghhhh all right ngl I am squirming at this one a little bit because complimenting myself in any way does not come naturally to me at all, which is weird in this instance because I genuinely am very proud of my writing and I think it's good, but coming up with a specific compliment towards it is beyond my comfort zone. I will try...

My writing has improved a lot in the past few years tbf, I think at one point I was a much stronger dialogue writer than I was at prose, as it comes more naturally to me, but I spend a lot more time focusing on crafting strong (and hopefully evocative) prose and descriptions these days, so I think the best compliment I can come up with is that I write nice prose and I like my writing style. I used to have two writing styles, one that was "mine" and then one I specifically crafted to get good grades in my writing classes, the second being a lot more stylized and literary, and I think now they've kind of merged into one more cohesive style that's accessible but also more descriptive, so yeah. That.

38. “This never happened” fix-it fics or “this happened but” fix-it fics?

I am a giant sucker for a "this happened but". There is nothing I love more than being like "how can I twist this canon event in a way that makes it more fun/expands on missing potential/negates elements that frustrate me." There's a time and a place for ignoring certain events entirely (cough cough season 7 and most of 8, ain't no fixing whatever the fuck was going on there), but generally I really enjoy the challenge of taking what's already happened and seeing how I can make it work for me, whether that means twisting or subverting it or taking whatever bits I like, or just using it as a jumping-off point for my own stuff (damaged nerve, dark bird being a prime example; it's basically almost 100% canon compliant up until the point that barry returns from flashpoint).

distract me from my last disaster — Barry finds Len at Saints and Sinners and tests out a hypothesis, but it turns out this is a distraction from a much bigger play.

Lullabies for Little Criminals — somehow in a cruel turn of events, Len’s meddling with time doesn’t save him or his sister from their father, but instead makes it so that he has a child with a one night stand that he must now look after.

getting back to fine — Barry’s losing his powers and winds up a bloody, beaten mess at Len’s front door.

Something Out of Nothing — Barry tries to turn the tables on breaking into Len’s home when the night takes a sharp turn for the worse.

Didn’t Change a Thing — Len learns that going back in time has changed nothing for him; Barry arrives on the Waverider to coax him back from the brink.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try to! I used to be much more on top of it, but life gets in the way and now it takes me a while to respond — but I always adore the chance to say hello and thanks to anyone who’s read my things ❤️

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

The angstiness ENDING? Hmmm…

Probably This Time of Doubt (coldflash) — Len has everything he could ever want for himself in this timeline, but there’s something wrong. Something missing. Something he can’t live without.

Close second would be Look Who’s Inside Again (thomally, tmr) — Even though Thomas and Gally swear they made it to Safe Haven, they are somehow back in the Glade. And this time, Thomas doesn’t see a way out.

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I have not written a true crossover! (LOT and The Flash I don’t think counts). I’ve debated writing a crossover between TMR and some video games (and once considered the Outsiders actually) but have yet to do so.

8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not hate, no. The fandoms I write in are thankfully very lovely in my experience 💕

9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I… try. People say they like what I write, which I am so glad! But I can’t help but feel like my sex scenes are never very explicit. What can I say? I’m a softie in this way.

10) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nope! Not to my knowledge.

No, but I would LOVE to.

13) What’s your all time favourite ship?

This is hard, I’m a multishipper. My fav dynamic tends to be ships with stoic/reformed asshole and guilty hero/savior complex. So, thomally and coldflash.

14) What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I worry this will be to build a home. I’m just a bit stuck there.

15) What are your writing strengths?

Ahh, this is hard. I (hope) that my relationships seem to develop very realistically. Because I tend to write rarepairs, I like to make sure that the friendship/romances feel real and whole and not just googly-eyes and ridiculous pairings. I want them to be believable and relatable.

16) What are your writing weaknesses?

Somehow, I both write too much dialogue and too much description. I worry that all my fics are just people talking in different settings. I want to learn how to be more concise.

17) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

To be honest, before I even knew it was fanfiction I wrote stories about Doc Holliday and his common-law wife Kate Elder (Big Nose Kate) from the era of Wyatt Earp and Tombstone. I’m a major nerd.

18) What are your five favourite fics you’ve written?

Gosh that’s REALLY hard. Ummmm.. gosh this is subject to change every time I’m asked lol. Here’s my vibes atm.

In no particular order:

1. Look Who’s Inside Again (tmr) is one of my favorite canonverse concepts I’ve ever created and I loved writing the story. It’s probably one of the ones I’m most proud of this year. I also think it’s one of my better written.

2. Conflicts of Interest (tmr) is my lawyer au and it is so self indulgent and beloved.

3. Something Out of Nothing (coldflash) holds a place in my heart. I loved whumping Snart in that way.

4. a devil, a whiteboard, a bottle of wine (coldflash/coldwestallen depending on interp) was also such a fun fic to write because it’s probably my only fic close to crack and was just happy

5. The Last Eye to Open (bandersnatch) was fucking difficult and I’m really proud of the way that turned out.

(honorable mention). death and all its glory — I always wanted to explore the dark side to Newt being revived and living after tdc and I loved doing so in this fic.

19) what are five fic recs?

ONLY FIVE??? GOSH. one of these days I’m gonna have to do a major fic rec. for now, I’m gonna focus on authors I don’t believe I’ve recced for a long time/if ever who are amazing authors and I love their stuff.

Also most of these summaries are not the actual summaries, they’re just my paraphrasing.

Ready by comebacknow (TMR) — post-apocalyptic au, Minho prepares for what appears to be the end of the line.

A Hundred Thousand Loves (for just this one) by unbelieve (the maze runner) — Newt is an AI who has been infected with a virus, and Minho must cope with the tragic truth that they are now at the end of their time together.

Safe by SophiaCatherine (the Flash, coldwest) — Iris can’t seem to slow down, she’s about to burn out, and so she turns to Captain Cold.

let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place by Qlala (the Flash, coldflash) — Len claims not to do romance, but his actions speak louder than his grumbles.

tu me manques by giraffingallday (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) — Stefan isn’t quite so in the dark this time around, and what he feels begins to scare him.

Intro to Emotional Regulation by onemechanicalalligator (Community (TV)) — Troy leaves on the boat, and Abed’s mental health reaches an all time low.

hartley rathaway and or harry wells for the character game

Aha! My favorite prickly porcupine characters :D

Hartley Rathaway

NOTP - Hmm... I mean, he's gay so any ship with a lady that isn't a QPR would be right out. But for a true NOTP... I dunno. Joe West is a definite no. But I feel like I could see Hartley with pretty much any other guy on the show (or arrow-verse at large).

BROTP - Lisa Snart. Are they best friends? Are they QPPs? Either way I want them to be besties for life. That it would annoy Cisco to no end having these two team up is definitely a bonus. But that we never got a Piper & Glider commit crime together on the show is a definite shame.

OTP - Cisco Ramon. Hartmon is one of my favorite ships for the Flash and I definitely feel like the two have more in common than they're willing to admit. Especially when it comes to struggling with feeling like they've failed to meet familial expectations and getting screwed over by EoWells. But they're both brainy nerds, so the two of them bonding over their fandoms and then arguing over scientific theory & implementation the next is definitely part of the appeal of the ship.

Second Choice OTP - Barry Allen. This is another case of two characters having more in common than they're ready to admit. But they don't really have the baggage that Hartley does with Cisco and it's similar to why I enjoy Coldflash since Hartley does start off as Barry's enemy in all timelines but, unlike Snart, makes the full shift over to ally in most of those timelines too. (Though we only see it happen twice.) And, honestly, Hartley's comment about wanting to be swept off his feet by a guy in red leather is the funniest thing anyone's ever said in regards to Barry's suit. :D

Fluffy Ship - Cisco Ramon. As much as their established history lends itself well to angst, I really just like these two being at a point where they've moved beyond it and become all soft and melty for each other. And very protective because they know better than anyone what the other's weak spots are.

Angsty Ship - Eobard Thawne (as Harrison Wells). It's heavily implied canon that these two were involved before Hartley found the flaw(s) in the accelerator and Eobard gave him the boot, breaking up with and firing Hartley in one fell swoop. I tend to prefer it for background angst since I want Hartley to find happiness, but there's definitely a deep well of angst in there with Eobard manipulating Hartley on multiple levels.

Poly Ship - It's a toss up actually so...

David and Rob Singh. David is actually Hartley's love interest in the comics, so arguably Rob (whose last name is never given that I know of, so I just hand him his husband's instead) was created to partially take Hartley's place. That being said, what little of David/Rob seen in canon is very loving and stable, which is an environment Hartley would benefit from greatly. There definitely needs to be more of these three together and I guess at some point I'm just gonna have to write more myself.

Barry Allen and Cisco Ramon. It's my two fav OTPs for Hartley smushed into one, plus sticks two sunshine boys together. What could go wrong? hehehe (so much, no doubt)

Weirdest Ship - I mean... I don't really have a crack ship for Hartley, but arguably his canon ship with Roderick Smith is weird to me, for all that I enjoyed patching in the backstory for them with my semi-canon compliant three-parter fic series. Roderick is retconned into canon events on the show itself with 'remember the new guy' flashbacks and leaves him conveniently comatose so that he becomes Hartley's plot coupon for his redemption arc 2.0, this time speed run on screen instead of being retconned into existence. (Of course, it's set up by retconning out the first redemption arc out of existence first.) Because of how Roderick's screen time is largely confined to a fight scene flashback and naptime in a sleeping beauty glass coffin (I really gotta write a fairy tale fusion for these two), Roderick's a blank slate. He has no personality, so he can be given any personality necessary for a story and it's not OoC. Because he has no character beyond 'loyal to Hartley'.

Harry Wells

NOTP - His fellow Wells. Much as I like the idea of Harry learning to shed some of his self-hatred and that being reflected in how he treats his fellow Wells, I'm not generally into self-cest/twin-cest ships and parallel universe selves definitely fall in that area.

BROTP - Joe West. I really like their friendship in canon. It's nuanced and nice for two dad's to be able to bond over all the weird stuff their super powered adult child problems. They both have a tendency to get in trouble with their kids for being over-protective to the point of smothering too, so I just... like these two getting chances to bond. I also like that Joe is the one who really calls Harry out on his behavior in S4.

OTP - Cisco Ramon. There's so much UST and innuendo between these two in canon that the only two reasons I can think of that this ship didn't become canon was a.) the age difference between the characters/actors and b.) the writing staff has made a number of queerphobic decisions over the years that I suspect they can't conceive of Cisco being bi. Harry is clearly, canonically devoted to Cisco. So extending that devotion into romantic territory is way too easy to see.

Second Choice OTP - This is a hard one for me because Harry reads as being demiromantic and demisexual to me, so a lot of the popular ships for him get a kind of 'meh' response from me. I think E2 Tess Morgan - at least I'm assuming his unnamed wife was E2 Tess Morgan based on the audio clip used when he was sharing his memories of her with Jesse - would have to be my runner up OTP, though. We know he loved her dearly and Harry's love of her, even years after her death, is incredibly hard for him to speak of even to his daughter. So I can only imagine just how much happiness these two shared together in the early days of building STAR Labs and taking care of little Jesse.

Fluffy Ship - Cisco Ramon. Once the angst is cleared out of the way, these two just fall beautifully into sync with each other and being generally soft and domestic. Give me the fluffy happiness. :D

Angsty Ship - Hartley Rathaway. I haven't really gotten into this ship too much, but the potential for angst between these two is great. Harry's trying to leave the shadow cast by Eobard Thawne and afraid the things he did so that Zoom wouldn't kill Jesse mean he never will. And Hartley has to move beyond the hurt Eobard caused him in order to truly see Harry for who he truly is. I think Harry would be potentially drawn to Hartley for some of the same reasons he's canonically drawn to Cisco - they're both brilliant, snarky little assholes when they want to be and Harry is just delighted to have someone who pushes back when he shoves.

Poly Ship - I can't really see Harry being in a poly relationship that doesn't involve Cisco. And it'd be more likely to be a V - which would mean Harry would have to examine his jealousy issues - but in some cases I could see Harry falling into a triangle with Cisco and another too. I've been enjoying writing my Cisco/Harry/Hartley story, so for now that ship would specifically be my fav poly ship for him. But I think Harry's ultimately more likely to be accepting of others in a poly ship but not really interested in one for himself.

Weirdest Ship - HR Wells BROTP. I want these two to learn to like themselves and it being reflected in them growing a brotherly relationship while they weren't paying attention. They both struggle with self-hatred in their own ways and project it onto each other in differing degrees. Harry has the genius that HR wishes he had and HR has the social skills that Harry doesn't know how to emulate. They're both so very ND too and mask in different ways. So the ways in which these two play off each other is just fascinating to me. It's not necessarily weird-weird as a ship, but everything HR does is odd somehow. (Which is part of what I like about him.)

Bonus:

More thoughts on the Harry & HR BROTP. Okay, so, imagine HR had survived the end of S3 and gone back to Earth 19 to recuperate + help Cynthia with a much needed social revolution of what seems to be a massively fascist government there. Would have completely changed aspects of S4. In this AU HR would have learned to value his own strengths over the course of S3 and background of S4, so having him pass on what he's learned to help Harry with valuing his own emotional insights would be a interesting evolution of their relationship, with Harry especially learning from HR to treat himself with kindness and forgiveness.

<3 oh if only.

As it was, we did briefly get HR semi-back from the dead during Nash's possessed by the Wells arc. And while it's all background acting choices on Tom's part no doubt, Harry clearly treats HR with more patience, understanding, and kindness during the characters scenes together during those episodes. HR, in turn, wasn't being passive aggressive towards Harry either, no longer having to feel like Team Flash really wanted Harry and not him. Seeing the growth there for both of them was really a nice glimpse into the characters before we lost them for good. (Also Harry occasionally borrows one of HR's drumsticks. So they are basically sharing stim toys and I love the sibling-esque dynamic of it.)

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Hello, all!

I'd like to thank everyone for submitting and voting on their favourite prompts for our Coldflash Mini Weekend Event in April. Voting is now closed, and I’m pleased to announce our prompts for the event based on the most popular suggestions.

The winning prompts are…

The dates for the event are April 27th and 28th.

You can write fanfiction, draw fan art, create a mood board or a playlist, a fan video, or any other form of creative work. All contributions are welcome!

This is a pretty casual, lowkey event, with no commitments or sign-ups. The only rules are as follows:

1. Remember not to start posting until the event begins! You can start sharing your contributions on April 27th. If you’re a little behind schedule, don’t worry—the mods will continue to monitor the tag for a short time after the event is over in case anyone misses the deadline!

2. Make sure your work includes the prompts! There’s plenty of room for creative freedom, so hopefully these suggestions will spark something for you… pun intended. And if not, free day will allow you to post whatever your heart desires. Time to dust off those plot bunnies!

3. The tag for this weekend will be cfsw2024, so remember to tag all your contributions! When we get a little closer to the time, I’ll also start an AO3 collection where you can share your works with the world!

4. Please use appropriate tags. If your work is nsfw, or contains themes that might be upsetting or triggering, please make sure to tag it as such. We want everyone to be safe and enjoy themselves during this event, so be mindful of your fellow users and make sure to leave warnings if necessary!
