Mini Promptathon of Love

February has arrived and that means it's time for our seasonal mini promptathon hosted over on dreamwidth.

What is this? It’s like the big summer promptathon, only a mini version and there’s a general theme of Heart’s Day and love - romantic, platonic, friendship, you name it. UST? Developing romantic feelings? Badass mission? A need for quiet time and hugs? Excessive consumption of pink cupcakes? Angst and hurt/comfort? Alternate universes? Poly relationships? Natasha or Clint dating other people? Clint or Natasha spending time with friends? All welcome here!

How To Play:

1. Leave your prompt in a comment to this post. List each prompt as its own separate comment. Prompts can be generic, Marvel, or include a mention of Clint and/or Natasha. You can leave as many prompts as you want.

2. Post your fill, or a link to your fill - be it fic, art, a video of you performing an interpretive dance, etc - as a reply to the prompt comment. If you're posting a link it's a good idea to include a summary or the first few paragraphs of your fic as a teaser. Prompts can absolutely be filled multiple times by multiple people!

What ship were you completely obsessed with as a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?

I don't know that there's a particular ship that I was obsessed with as a teenager that I don't care about anymore... I read some awful Orlando Bloom RPF back in the day, I suppose that would count?

Which ship would you consider your first one?

Han/Leia for sure. they made me feel all tingly.

Your first fanfic was about which couple?

the first fanfic I ever remember writing was a Star Wars EU when I was literally in 6th/7th grade, which I guess was nominally Han/Leia because it was mostly about their kids (Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin). I had no idea what fanfiction even was at that point, I just loved Star Wars so much and had read a lot of EU novels and wanted to write my own story. which is where the best fanfiction starts, no? the first fanfiction I remember deliberately seeking out because I wanted more was either Spuffy or Wolverine/Rogue. or the aforementioned Orlando Bloom RPF. which I would prefer not to think about.

Do you remember the first couple you saw fan art of?

no clue.

Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?

no, I definitely have my own opinions about particular ships but I've just never been that particular kind of active in fandom.

Did you use to have any NOTP or have one currently?

nope, there are definitely pairings I don't really vibe with – but I can see the advantages/disadvantages in almost every ship. just because I prefer one over another doesn't mean I have something against the one I don't love.

Who were the last couple in the last fanfic you read?

Dream/Hob

Currently, do you have any OTPs?

I mean, definitely Dream/Hob at the moment. there are definitely other perennial faves, but that's foremost right now.

Is there any couple that, to this day, that you are extremely mad about not getting into?

no? I don't really understand the question. if I like a couple or pairing then I just get into them? what's not to get?

Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they're kind of interesting?

not really. I guess I can see the merits in some ships I didn't really get when I was younger, for whatever reason. and vice versa.

Do you have any ship that, in the past, would have been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I don't think so?

definitely Dream/Hob right now. Steddie and Clintasha as runners up.

What do most of your ships have in common?

I'm honestly not sure. I guess there's often some element of a normal person and a rebel? but it's also the general idea of people who are somehow on the fringes finding each other and coming together?

What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

honestly, I can get on board with almost anything if it's well-written. I don't love teacher/student relationships or similar power dynamics, just because I work in education and it's a sensitive topic. but even that I can see how it's hot under certain circumstances. idk, I'm very much live and let live when it comes to ships – if I don't like something I just assume it's not for me and I won't read it!

oh boy, this is difficult... so much bad writing from over the years, but then, we’re always supposed to be improving, right?

1) Kintsukuroi - https://archiveofourown.org/works/14620008/chapters/33787413 my first attempt at A/B/O, trying really hard to make it feel more consensual than A/B/O usually does. Leverage OT3 and has spawned one more completed fic and one incomplete.

2) Ash and Dust - https://archiveofourown.org/works/32637667 written within two weeks of the Black Widow movie coming out, and helped me come to terms with Natasha’s entire character arc through the movies; this was extremely cathartic to write. The results of Natasha “severing the nerve.”

3) Lasting Hope - https://archiveofourown.org/works/4241220/chapters/9596115 spite fic written after J*ss Wh*don destroyed my ship in Age of Ultron (and if I recall correctly, derailing the plans Marvel had for Clintasha, but I digress...) and honestly? It’s bad. I had virtually no writing experience when I began this, but it has started my longest series to date, being almost 50K words long in total, and that makes me love it. The works get better as they go along, and I’m still actively writing for it, but this is the story that started it all. Clint/Nat/Bucky BDSM AU.

4) The Morningstar Job - https://archiveofourown.org/works/16391873/chapters/38368748 written for the Leverage Dual Bang in 2018, it was the longest thing I had ever completed to that date. Proved to myself that yes, I could write something longer than 10K and have it not suck. A crossover between Leverage post-canon and Lucifer season three, where Parker and Hardison have to run a con on the Devil to get Eliot back.

5) waters too deep to tread - https://archiveofourown.org/works/38167234 my very first White Collar fic, written in less than 24 hours after I watched the pilot episode for the first time in years and leading me to write four more fics for this series in less than a week. (I also finished the entire series in less than two, but again, I digress...) Crossover between White Collar and Leverage, where Neal recognizes several thieves he’s run into over the years.

+1) And My Heart Beats (so that i can hardly speak) - https://archiveofourown.org/works/14705822 one fic that I really wish had gotten more love when it was originally posted. I remember seeing a piece of fan art (that I can no longer find) but it was of Steve and old Peggy finally getting their dance in CA: tWS. I had to write it, but it just never seemed to get noticed.

+2) In the Darkness of Dawn - https://archiveofourown.org/works/35926318/chapters/89573758 another fic that I wish had gotten more love. And in fact, when I had the first chapter up, it did get quite a few kudos and hits. But I took the first chapter down when I decided to rework it for NaNo 2021, and after I posted it (50 thousand words later) it just seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Clintasha Vampire AU, with vamp!Nat, winged!Clint, and werewolves and many other creatures.

(I realize that this has gotten completely out of hand, but I write for me and I have just so many fics I love! It was hard enough paring it down to seven!)

What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?

I have a Jopper story from over two years ago on wattpad and it was my first published work. It’s really embarrassing and there are so many mistakes. I read it and laugh now.

What’s a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?

From this fic:

When everyone got outside, Director Fury made an announcement over the loudspeaker.

“Hello agents, glad you could all join us in this mandated bi-annual pain in my ass.” That received a few chuckles.

“In the event of an actual fire,” Fury continued, “You are to remain in this waiting area until the all-clear is given by the SHIELD firefighters. This means no going back to your rooms or elsewhere until we are given the all-clear. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes sir.” Came the response from the gathered agents.

“Good, now that that’s over, you can all return to whatever you were doing before. Unless that whatever is throwing arrows in the ceiling in which case you may not continue doing that. Thank you.” Fury walked off the stage to join Hill on their walk back inside.

What are some common things you incorporate in your fics?

I defiantly make Taylor Swift references in my stories a lot. And I’ll make little homages to the original work. For example in my ongoing fic right now, my main character is staying in hotel room 514, which is the episode she gets married in in the show.

Give your writing a compliment

My writing makes people (including me) feel lots of emotions! The majority of my comments are people saying that I’ve made them cry. 🥲

How do you feel about fan art of your stories?

I would cry. I think there would be so many tears. If someone wanted to do that that would be SO NICE!!

Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

For multi-chapter fics I outline, but for one shots (which is what I typically write) I just go for it.

Pick a character, I’ll tell you my favorite head canon for them.

Lita since you didn't give me a character I’ll do Olivia Caliban 😉 I think that on top of reading romance novels, she specifically enjoys fantasy romance. She likes being swept up in the story just as much as the love unfolding, and everything is more interesting to her when there are pirates and magic.

Which on of your fics would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?

Luckily I don't write smut, so there isn't anything too bad they could find. It would have to be the old wattpad one I think, because it’s my worst work. But now I’ve taken to showing it to people, and a lot of my friends have read it. OH! one time in seventh grade I wrote a rpf about me and this guy I liked and it’s so bad it makes my eyes bleed. I also share that with my friends and we have done dramatic readings of it. I really have no shame. 🤷🏼‍♀️

What genre do you struggle with as an author?

Action isn't the best for me.

Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

goodbye don’t come easy (when you find the one)

Clint deals with Natasha’s death. One-shot. It’s SAD.

11. Something neat I’ve learned while doing research and how much do I worry about research in general.

Few weeks back I watched two YouTube videos explaining the rules of cricket, because I was looking for the name of a specific throw for a metaphor that I ended up not using. So it turned out pretty useless for my story, but at least now I finally understand what that sport is all about!

Also once, I had a conversation with a real paramedic for a tragic medical emergency storyline. In the end I disregarded half of the thing he told me coz it wasn’t plot convenient 🙃 but it was super interesting.

Overall I care a lot -too much- about accuracy and not being second-guessed by anyone (apart when I write things that only my three biggest fans will read) but I’m also lazy. Which is why I tend to stick to what I know or to fields that someone I’m close to is knowledgeable about. That way I can just Whatsapp them very specific questions instead of spending hours on Google for a couple of lines in my story.

14. Worst writing habit.

I guess it’s the fact that my brain has decided a long time ago that it wouldn’t be productive at home earlier than 10pm. So in order to write during the day, I need to go to coffee shops where I spend a looooot of money on coffee and food.

17. Favourite line I’ve ever written.

Hmm, I don’t know… I guess right now I want to say ‘Liberté, égalité, frappucino’ (which means nothing out of context haha), because I don’t often amuse myself but I’m still laughing about it two weeks later. Overall, I’ll kind of cheat my way around that question and say ‘Mais tu te trompes. Le plus avisé de tous les professeurs, c’est toi.’ Not for its quality but just because it’s the final line of my biggest pride and accomplishment so far.

41. Weirdest story idea I’ve ever had.

It has to go back to McFly times, when my sister and I used to come up with three new ideas every week, putting the boys in all sorts of scenarios. I can’t really recall the weirdest one, but I guess the weirdest thing we’ve done is to make the McFly characters from her main fanfic and the McFly characters from my main fanfic become friends and chat online for hours in a sort of undefined universe.

62. Weirdest reason I’ve ever shipped something.

I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting about my weirdest ship here, but for now I’ll go with one that might not be ‘weird’ but still a bit wtf. Again with my sister, we wrote that AU fic where every single MCU character (existing back then) were students in an American high school. We built the story around mainstream ships like Stucky and Clintasha, but along the way some crossovers relationships developed in our universe and I ended up shipping Wanda Maximoff from Avengers and Matt Murdock from Daredevil so hard. To the point that I started writing a sequel spinoff fic about them and I actually ship the two MCU characters even though they’ve never been and will never be in the same movie/TV show.

63. Best insult I’ve read in a fic.

Okay, because I can’t recall any great insult read in someone else’s fic, I’ll go with one of mine, because ‘You judgemental caring kissing piece of shit!’ (and the context it was said in my ‘fine arts school’ fic) is something I’m pretty proud of.

98. What I don’t like about my writing style.

I don’t like that I’m still a bit too ‘shy’ about being crude and gutsy in my writing, sometimes it’s a bit too polished, when rougher phrasing can hit the reader right in the feels, and makes it easier to respect the ‘show don’t tell’ rule. But because it doesn’t come naturally to me, if I do it, it doesn’t read natural so most of the time I reverse back to being more poetic and stylistic.

We haven't done one of these for a while, so...

A reminder that there's a whole heap of Clintasha goodness in the 'masterlist' tab on the community dreamwidth, with masterlists from past events going back to 2012, plus 'fic' and 'rec' tags for your perusal.

On AO3 we have a bunch of collections for comm events and there's a community: be_compromised tag if you're having trouble filtering for Clintasha as a main pairing or Clint and Nat as the main focus on a fic.

The comm discord has rec and fanart channels, as well as channels for writing help. (This has replaced dreamwidth for most of our discussion / friending / general chat.)
