. Selamat sore, teman² buku dimanapun kalian berada. Bulan ini saya baru kelarin buku klasik berjudul "TAI-PAN", yg mengisahkan ttg cikal bakal berdirinya Hong Kong, pulau yg sblmnya gersang, bakal diubah oleh sang visioner Dirk Struan, Tai-Pan orang asing pertama di Cina di abad 19 ini. Plotnya msh berkisar perseteruan Struan & Brock, pesaingnya. Yg sama² berambisi utk mjd yg tertinggi dan terkuat di Hong Kong. Sayangnya, krn buku ini sdh sangat lama diterjemahkan (perkiraan saya antara 80an akhir & awal 90an, krn tiadanya ISBN, tahun penerbitan, penerjemah dsb), terjemahannya sungguh aduhai menyiksa batin saya selagi membacanya 🤭🤣. Saya jg agak curiga terjemahannya ini jg disadur saja, bukan versi lengkap krn saya merasa agak janggal saat baca buku ini. Walaupun setting sejarah dlm buku ini menarik, karakter² tokohnya agak kurang menurut saya (pengecualian tentu saja Dirk Struan). Kita hanya bisa mengenali karakternya kebanyakan dari dialognya saja. Ending juga masih cliffhanger bagi saya. Tapi nuansa kebrutalan hidup pd abad 19 cukup mencekam di novel ini. Wabah penyakit, pembunuhan, politik, kebaharian semuanya bercampur baur dlm deskripsi author. The saddest thing about Nick’s opening monologue is that he wants to see the best in people and he doesn't want to judge anyone. He has such faith in people. which is stark contrast than to the end of the story when he has lost faith in humanity and can no longer see the good in everyone. The world of the rich has turned him in a different person, he has lost some of his better qualities. He no longer wants to believe the best in people since he has been so let down by the other characters in the story. It shows how much the events of The Great Gatsby  and how deeply Gatsby's death effected him.

Some queer classics that are great to read.

"Giovanni's Room" by James Baldwin (1956) - This novel explores the story of an American man living in 1950s Paris who grapples with his own sexual identity and his relationship with an Italian bartender named Giovanni.

"Orlando" by Virginia Woolf (1928) - This novel follows the life of the titular character, who changes gender and lives for centuries, exploring themes of gender, identity, and time.

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde (1890) - The story revolves around a young man named Dorian Gray, whose portrait ages while he remains youthful, as he becomes entangled in a life of hedonism and moral decay.

"Maurice" by E.M. Forster (1914) - This novel tells the story of Maurice Hall and his experiences as a gay man in early 20th-century England, including his relationships and struggles with societal norms.

"Carmilla" by J. Sheridan Le Fanu (1872) - A gothic novella featuring a female vampire, Carmilla, and the mysterious, intimate relationship she forms with the story's female protagonist, Laura.

The Little Shy Kitten was illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren, who was chief illustrator for Disney in the late 1930s. His work is well-worth checking out!
