The saddest thing about Nick’s opening monologue is that he wants to see the best in people and he doesn't want to judge anyone. He has such faith in people. which is stark contrast than to the end of the story when he has lost faith in humanity and can no longer see the good in everyone. The world of the rich has turned him in a different person, he has lost some of his better qualities. He no longer wants to believe the best in people since he has been so let down by the other characters in the story. It shows how much the events of The Great Gatsby  and how deeply Gatsby's death effected him.

Last week's book haul, plus Paolini's absolute brick of a space opera I've barely cracked open. The Trouble with Peace is phenomenal. I am holding off on reading through it in a few long, long sittings. Barely. Granta magazine is a great collection of shorter fiction and photography, and something I might very well subscribe to, come the future. Poems for a World Gone to Sh*t make for some very enjoyable poetry reading. Yum! Introduction To Evolutionary Psychology is something I picked up out of sheer curiosity (as one does). I'm fond of the series -- they can simplify ideas in comprehensive ways, and offer plenty of resources to dig deeper into a topic. The Red Tenda of Bologna... I don't even know. I bought a few of these for class, but I'm enjoying all of them. I've not cracked it open, but judging by the size of it, all I have to do is open it once before I'm done. 2 very different books on my shelf. Just finished Rabbits for Food & just about to start Stone Sky Gold Mountain. I loved Rabbits for Food, just beautiful, honest writing that deals with the reality of mental illness. And so looking forward to Mirandi Riwoe’s novel set in far north Queensland during the gold rush with a young Chinese woman as protagonist. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (quick review)   Inspired by Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Neil Gaiman, with his usual imaginative story-telling, brings us The Graveyard Book. The story follows the life of a child who becomes known as Nobody Owens, going by Bod for short. His mother, father, and sister are all murdered at the start of the story (off-page), and Bod, a mere toddler, manages to use a teddy bear to stand on and escape his crib. Then, of course, he heads to the graveyard, where he lives with the dead for the next thirteen or fourteen years of his life.   At its core, the book is a coming of age story for Bod, who must navigate and learn how to live in the graveyard with the help of a community of ghosts, most prevalently Silas, his guardian, and Mr. and Mrs. Owens who claim parental responsibility. As Bod ages, the desire to see the real world grows with him, as does his curiosity about where he really comes from.   The book could be referred to as children’s literature, and I think that is accurate, but make no mistake, the book has its dark moments. I’ve heard it compared to the Harry Potter books, but I’m not sure that would be accurate. Gaiman is known as one of those authors whose genre is difficult to classify, often some blend of horror, fantasy, and classic British Literature.   Whatever it is, The Graveyard Book is ideal for anyone interested in young-adult fantasy, but one might expand that audience to anyone who is interested in fantastical literature from authors like Clive Barker or even H.P. Lovecraft.   If we’re nit-picking, you might say the villains are all flat characters. You might be right, but that never bothered me. Bod is a strong, active force that takes over this book from the beginning. As readers, we love seeing him grow and overcome, often with his own wit.   I recommend this to just about everyone who enjoys horror or fantasy.
