AnkiDroid release a new version after 2.25 years. I think I never worked on a project that took almost three years. I also hope I won't have to again, that was stressful, that impacted, even a little bit, millions of people, that's done and I don't know how I feel. This lacks an official celebration. How to just move to the next change to this software as if we were not blocked for years due to a technical and managerial difficulty?

problem: the WaniKani Anki deck I'm trying to use for vocab keeps pulling exclusively from the Radicals section, rather than from Radicals, Kanji, and Vocabulary according to the intended "due" order
solution: two filtered decks, one that searches the WaniKani deck with "is:new" and one that searches for "is:due," both sorted by "due" and altering the card's due date in the original deck

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

October Language Goals 🎀
I was thinking of posting a more structured study schedule for studying Japanese, but right now, I don't think that's a good idea because I'm not actually following a strict study routine or schedule. My available time to study varies so much on the day to day so having flexibility in how I study is definitely going to be and has been helpful.
These goals do help give me some useful guidance in how I use my study time, especially when I have a longer amount of time to study.
I am going to add an updated list of resources at the end of this post as I have found a good set of resources that are/will be helping me along this language journey.
🩷 Goals for the Month of October -
complete Genki I lesson 1 + lesson 2
build a flashcard list of 50-75 vocab in AnkiApp (currently 32/75)
learn 10-15 most common phrases/greetings
make a list of common things I say and find their Japanese equivalent
keep a 30+ day streak in Duolingo
keep a 30+ day streak in Busuu
post a speaking exercise per "chapter" in Busuu
test out WaniKani and see if I would like to utilize it as a resource
buy 2 to 5 manga in japanese (for future learning)
finish season 4 of Bungou Stray Dogs (for fun)
begin using AnkiDroid Genki I flashcard set in correspondence with the textbook lessons
start a beginner langblr challenge (either my own or find one to join in on)
I think this is a very doable list of goals given how busy my months and weeks have been. I will have a decent amount of free time, especially if I schedule all of my stuff efficiently. Now, on to a list of current resources!
🩷 Updated Japanese Language Resources -
Duolingo - I know she gets hated on but I love duolingo right now just for some daily practice on days where I have low energy or less time for studying. I turned off the romanji so I'm forcing myself to get more familiar either hiragana and katakana and I just find this app useful for vocab and silly daily practice.
Busuu - ohh, she has my heart right now. I actually bought premium for busuu for one year to give me time to actually use the app and get the most out of it. The audio is a little robotic sounding, but the exercises are helpful. They have speaking exercises that you can post to the community page and get native speakers to correct you! I honestly just love this app, and it also has a streak feature like Duolingo to keep me motivated to do some daily practice.
Renshuu - I still love renshuu as a resource because it’s the only reason I re learned the hiragana and katakana so fast, although I have not being using it as often lately. I still highly recommend the app! I want to keep using it and see how helpful it continues to be!
Language Drops - I like using this one to practice and learn some vocab every now and then. The free version only really lets you do five minutes a day but for a quick vocabulary review, that’s all I really need!
Genki I + II Textbooks and Workbooks - I've looked through the first lesson in Genki I and I honestly am so excited to use it once I have the time to sit down and study from it. My plan is to take notes from the textbook in my own notebooks, practice the exercises in the textbook and workbook, listen to the dialogue, and lots of flashcards!
Writing workbooks - I want to start using the two I have because I think it'll help me retain my knowledge of hiragana and katakana and even Kanji, once I get to the point where I'm learning Kanji.
Ankidroid/AnkiApp - These are two different apps, but they are both for flashcards. Their functionality is a bit different from each other, but they're still incredibly useful! I make my own flashcards in AnkiApp, but I use decks made by others in Ankidroid. This way I can keep studying what I already know but also can learn other things, if that makes sense? I'm using the Genki I deck on Ankidroid currently as I am preparing to use the Genki I textbook.
Google Keep Notes - I use keep notes to keep a record of my goals, resources, routines, etc. it’s so easy and simple to use and access, so I thought I’d mention it here
YouTube - I love watching YouTube videos about learning languages, thought I’m not advanced enough to start watching native Japanese content. Some YouTubers I like for their language tips are Tanya Benavente, Lidie Botes, and Zoe.languages. There’s a couple random videos about languages from, oh no Nina and The Bliss Bean, too.
that is all my goals and main current resources for the month of October. I’m thinking of starting like a language bullet journal, like a bullet journal/language tracking journal for Japanese? But I don’t know if I should? Maybe you guys can vote and give me some motivation to make a decision?
thank you guys! I did manage to complete most of my September goals, so that is definitely keeping me motivated right now! I haven’t had the most energetic of days but I think even a little bit of studying can be beneficial!
til next time lovelies! 🩷🤍

My days are going well. I've completely shut down all social media except Tumblr. I'm using Obsidian and Ankidroid for exam prep, and it's helping massively!
I'm more than halfway through this book and it's so fascinating and navigates the world of ideas and theories and personal history in a way that I relate, and it's helping me put my experience in law school in perspective! On of the best books of the year for me ❤️

this is another commemorative post! i just love celebrating the little things. makes me feel more motivated, y'know?
anyway, we've finally reached chapter 20! woo!!! it's taken me about a month to go 10 chapters, which i'd say is a pretty decent pace considering i'm not reading in my native language, and i have a job and i'm making all these posts for each chapter. so yay me!
as i hoped in my chapter 10 post, i do seem to be sticking with it. i even started doing anki for the vocab lists i've made! it took me about 2 weeks just to get through every entry in chapter 1. but to be fair, the deck i made had japanese to english and english to japanese cards for each word. so technically it took me 2 weeks to study every entry times two, which doesn't sound as bad.
let me know if you want any of the anki decks! i import them into ankidroid via takoboto dictionary's lists, so there might be issues with some entries, but most of them are fine.
oh, and if you're on desktop, i remade the about and tags pages a week or so ago. finally got javascript reenabled, lol. go check them out! i'll try to make a mobile-friendly navigation post to pin, but i have no idea when that'll be ready.
well, that's all for now. i need to write chapter 20's name breakdown and then i'll post everything. here's to another 10 chapters (and hopefully another 175 after that). thanks for reading, and please look forward to the next posts!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Сейчас приходится делать самой из бумаги или составлять электронные колоды в AnkiDroid.

Sorry i'm inactive lately, i have uni assignments and i procrastinate on them by writing my own gameboy emulator in C (following image is rendered from a memory dump, but most of the instructions are already implemented, not their execution tho). Don't scroll past the image btw (i vent there, like a sussy idiot i am).
Tumblr media
Venting down here, yeah
I only attend programming class and the other one that will get me expelled real soon lmao. We've been procrastinating (together! with my friend, we're doing the laboratory works (more like practice class, we're learning the theory, talk about it with a teacher dude (this one is not actually a professor or anything), then do some shit with electronic equipment and write a report about it) in two-person groups. But i blame myself because i was suggesting to procrastinate quite frequently, even tho we both seem to have issues lmao) and probably won't finish the thing, which probably will let to us being kicked out (my friend knows the subject way better than me so he has more chances to stay tho) on the next exam retake (oct. 25th and oct. 26th. If i'll fail an exam there'll be another retake with a commission and if i fail it i'll get expelled). Yes, there're TWO classes where this shit happened, but the second one cares about the laboratory works way less so whatever.
I'm also in uni cuz to avoid conscription (bad starting location, won't name it cuz you'll hate me or something idk) and recently lost my chance to change gender marker in documents (bad starting location 2 electric boogaloo, they've banned transitioning and the trans diagnosis itself, which was a thing here), so i actually need to do something about conscription problem as i'm doing last bachelor's year and will either work in IT (which is my only way after uni tbh, all i can do is code and shitpost in my telegram channel, but it's not really reliable against army based on what i witnessed couple of days ago), or go to the next level of uni (google says it's called Master's Degree), which is a huge pain in the ass as i don't qualify (mostly mentally but i also don't know jack shit, and the IT ones cost like at least multiple grands of USD, which is a fuckton of money here, like a year worth of living or something) for any of the programs (i'm currently doing bachelor's in physics lmao). Still better than a year of being bald, a hole-digger and an alcoholic, but whatever. I'm also doing two (both are free) additional courses rn, one (python and ML) was obligatory because our uni needs funding, and another one (web: React and Django, and some economics) is from some financial company. And i sent a request for another one (microelectronics in a security company, i actually really want to work with access control systems, sounds funky), hopefully they'll take me in.
There're also mental health issues (you know, normal ones, but I'm not telling you what i've self-diagnosed with cuz it's not how one gets their diagnosis lol) i do not get diagnosed/fixed cuz i'm silly (shit's hard, i have to ride a bus to another city AND walk afterwards, bruh. Not even talking about deciding on going and making an appointment, and spending considerable amount of money too.), and they're not really helping with the situation lmao.
I've also started learning spanish (using duolingo, ankidroid and pokémon zafiro alfa) as i find it quite funny, and also my favorite light novel series' sequel (sukamoka) is completely translated to spanish but not english (i read it in machine translation from chinese but really want a proper one). I will also use it to flex on people who can't speak any language except their native one well (there're some people like this around me, and yes, english is not my native language, it probably shows cuz i try to speak funky sometimes and don't know actual punctuation rules).
Anyway, if i won't be active for a long time - i'm still out there (don't worry, i'm a weak one and have commitment issues). Thanks for being around, funny gay people in my phone.
I've reread this like 3 or 4 times (forgor), i hope the post is fine lmao. Holy hell, if you've actually read till here - thanks and i'm sorry.

A user, a real one, not a dev, that didn't do any special manipulation appart from joining the alpha tester group, confirmed that the update to AnkiDroid 2.16 worked as expected. Phew. Two years of work on it!

halfway done with this exam session!! i'm now waiting for the results of my calculus I written test so i will know if i can try to take the oral part of the exam. in the meantime im studying these ~60 theorems (yuck) i am also experiencing with ankidroid to see if its any worth and it can help with structuring my study a bit more! it seems easy enough to use and set up, so for now its a thumbs up. we will see how it can perform in the long run. cant wait to be done w these exams so i can focus on setting up my notion and organize my semester schedule :3

November Language Goals 🎀
I did not stick to my October goals at all as I began picking up more hours at work, I’m going to the gym again, and I’m swamped with homework. but I began my language tracker/language bullet journal and I’m feeling more hopeful about my ability to stick with it while juggling other responsibilities. Some of them are the same as Octobers but that’s due to not having met those goals. Here’s to a better month!
Complete Genki I Lesson 1 + Lesson 2
Maintain a 30 day Busuu streak
Maintain a 30 day Duolingo streak
Complete up to OR more than Lesson 10 in Level 1 on Kanji App
Use Renshuu for Kana review once a week
Review Ankidroid flashcards twice a week
Complete a weekly reflection and a weekly vocab list in bullet journal
Use LingQ once a week, writing all unknown words in vocabulary notebook
Use Kana writing practice books at least once a week
Complete Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4
I want this to be fun and not a chore. I want to enjoy the learning process. I want to be successful. I set a lot of goals and if I can even only achieve half, that’s still a lot that I’ve done! I believe in myself. I’ve got this!
Ps. I will start updating more frequently, probably a couple times a week with some life updates or fun things I want to share! Updating daily was way too difficult so maybe I’ll do an every two or three day update, that might be more manageable.
til next time lovelies! 🩷🤍
