A/N: Life's becoming very busy for me lately, so I went out of my way to start this one ASAP in the hopes of finishing it on time for the event. Alas, I haven't fully written everything for it yet, but here's my first entry nonetheless. Worth saying this is a comics-compliant story, a rarity coming from me, yes... it takes place around 10 years after the war ended. It's quite possibly my first attempt to fully write an Azula redemption story based on canon itself (Gladiator is, quite clearly, its own thing and her arc there isn't exaaactly a redemption arc, at least, not the one some people are looking for when it comes to Azula). While obviously Sokka and Azula are very important and at the core of this tale, there's one more connection for Azula in this story that's crucial for her development, and I really hope you guys will have fun seeing it develop and unfold.
Anyway, this is not a one-shot collection, for once: we're here for 8 chapters of a slightly unusual plot choice for my standards, but that I really hope many of you will have plenty of fun reading!
One day, a comet crashed into the moon.
It wasn't Sozin's Comet, which might have destroyed the cosmic body altogether with its power: it was smaller, but harmful nonetheless. The collision couldn't be seen from the planet the moon orbited around, either, for it happened on the dark side of the moon.
A cloud of debris, of filth, rose from the collision spot, where the remains of that comet embedded itself into the moon. It seemed to wish to merge with it, perhaps to take over the moon altogether: the exosphere grew polluted, and the debris from the collision didn't float away into space in due time. It remained locked around the moon, instead… it obscured it. The sun's light had once reflected powerfully upon its surface… but as bright as its rays might be, that noxious cloud muddled and impeded their connection.
And so, the moon started to fade from the sky, leaving but a vestige, a faded glimmer of white, to be seen in the night sky.
The shackled and restrained women wouldn't threaten the Fire Lord anymore. His patience had long run its course after ten years of sabotage by their group. He stepped up to the leader, chained and on her knees, merely a few paces away from the location of her last act of vicious cruelty. Hiding behind a mask of white and purple, she was responsible for the latest case of reckless arson in which he had finally captured them…
Zuko tore the mask away from the woman's face forcefully.
It was not his sister.
His shock, and the time he wasted standing near her without saying anything, emboldened Zirin sufficiently to spit on his face.
Zuko growled, pushing back and wiping the insult off his cheek hastily: his guards rushed in, as though to beat the woman up further, but Zuko raised a hand.
"Stop!" he exclaimed, glaring at the woman again. Zirin's fury failed to be disguised behind the dangerous smirk she offered him. "You… where is she? Why are you wearing her mask?!"
"Because someone had to," Zirin responded. "Because… she has matters to resolve. But she'll come back stronger… and when she does, she'll tear you to shreds as she always should have, Fire Lord Zuko!"
Zuko snarled: he had never understood why the false Kemurikage had joined Azula's ranks, or what kind of loyalty she elicited in them. But part of him suspected, even from some time ago, that it wasn't true loyalty to Azula… rather, it might be pure, unbridled hatred reserved for him. Why?
But he hadn't captured the group for the sake of understanding their grudges. While he certainly meant to make every last one of them pay for their crimes in due time, the main reason why he had chased them for so long was to find Azula.
"Where is she?" he hissed. Zirin scoffed.
"You're too late. She's going to find what she seeks, and with its power, she will destroy you. She's going to…"
"Do you realize that I could kill you right now?"
Zirin finally stopped talking. Zuko's glare froze her heart over for at least an instant: he elicited genuine fear out of her, as well as the rest of the women chained and crouching behind her. The Fire Lord scowled, making his point apparent even more effectively by raising a hand and evoking his flames in it.
"The last time you lot caused more trouble than you were worth, I told myself that another misstep of that magnitude would be enough. I'd do it. I'd execute you all. And you just went and outdid yourselves, of all things. Makes matters rather easy for me, doesn't it?" Zuko hissed. Zirin snarled.
"You wouldn't dare…"
"Azula wanted me to be a stronger Fire Lord, didn't she? The kind who makes the difficult choices, no matter how appalling they might be. Maybe it's time I live up to her expectations," he said: there wasn't a hint of falsehood in his voice. He meant every word he had spoken.
Zirin shivered as Zuko stepped closer to her, still wielding the fire dangerously.
"She's not going to come here to save you. She won't get here on time if I decide to deal my justice to you, right here, right now," he said. "The only way you get to live longer than a few more minutes is if you tell me, right now, where she went. I'm willing to go through each one of your friends, one by one, until I get my answer. Might as well start with you."
He had her. The fear in her eyes was genuine. No, this wasn't the Fire Lord he wanted to be… but they truly had forced his hand. He found patience and compassion at short supply whenever it involved his sister's terrorist group these days.
"So, now that we've established your life means nothing to me and I could snuff it out in a second… tell me: where is Azula?"
Zirin might have meant to continue fighting back… but when she opened her mouth, she spoke with words that Zuko feared might be a trick of some sort, for they were the last he had ever expected to hear as an answer to his inquiries:
"The Northern Water Tribe."
He had looked into the phenomenon in the sky: every astronomer he spoke to would reiterate that they didn't understand it any more than Sokka did. The Water Tribesman felt a worse pang of fear every time he gazed up at the moon these days: its brightness faded more each day, it felt like… was it drifting away from their world, for no reason? Would that make any sense? As much as it was harder to see it lately, it didn't appear to have shrunken in size…
The sun's glow hadn't changed, either: otherwise, life in their world would have also been impacted severely by a weaker source of sunlight. Everything was normal. Even the tides were normal. The moon was the only thing that wasn't.
"I don't know, Sokka. I've tried to communicate with Yue in the Spirit World, yes, but it just doesn't work that way," Aang sighed, after Sokka asked about it for the umpteenth time during dinner, in Air Temple Island.
"She has to look for you instead, is it? You told me she came to you once when you had run away from us, when we were only just approaching the Fire Nation," Sokka said, frowning. "Do you have to wait for her to do that again? Aang, I… I don't like this. I don't know if it's a spiritual thing or if it's something else, something more material, but it's freaking me out."
"It's not affecting my bending," Katara said. "Which, yes, I know isn't your primary concern, Sokka, but I think it means the moon is there. It very much is."
"But why is it so dim? Am I the only one who thinks something's got to be messed up here?" Sokka groaned.
"Well, I have no idea what's a bright moon or a dim moon, so you might just be," Toph said, wiggling her toes as she relaxed by the table, feet propped upon it. At this point, nobody even bothered telling her not to be so careless.
"Sokka, I'll keep trying, but…" Aang started, only for his words to be cut off by a squawking messenger hawk.
"What…? Zuko?" Toph raised her eyebrows, turning her head towards the sound. "Or are you expecting letters from someone else lately, Twinkle Toes?"
Aang rose to his feet, approaching the creature immediately. Sokka merely spared a moment's attention to the matter before frowning again at the food before him, on the table: what could possibly be wrong with the moon? He had looked into it everywhere, and nobody had ever registered a phenomenon like this…
"Uh… uh-oh," Aang grimaced, turning towards the rest of the group. "Guys? Zuko needs our help."
"Why?" Sokka said, with a grimace. "The hell did he get up to now? And hey, I asked for your help with this first! If anything, he can get in line…"
"I don't think he can," Aang said, eyeing Sokka with uncertainty. "Look, I'd love to help you, Sokka, but I'm not sure how to go about it to begin with. Aside from that? Well… Zuko's problem may be more immediate and more urgent. Didn't the moon start acting up a year ago?"
"It did, but it feels like it just gets worse!" Sokka exclaimed. "It is urgent!"
"Well, so is what Zuko told me," Aang said, breathing deeply. "I don't know, maybe it'll even help you find clues if you come with me. Maybe the Northern Water Tribe has information about the moon, they ought to be experts…"
"Wait… the Northern Water Tribe?" Katara frowned. "Why? What's going on?"
"Nobody really knows, but… apparently, Azula is on her way there," Aang said.
The room fell silent. Tension rose quickly, even if everyone remained silent: the Fire Lord's estranged sister, ten years on the run, wreaking havoc across the world, had been a sore thumb for Zuko ever since he had taken the Fire Nation throne. She turned up once in a while, but never for anything good. She continued to be a menace that terrified the bulk of the world population, a feared terrorist who mainly operated, however, in the Fire Nation itself… hence, the rest of the nations had never involved themselves in her capture. Some leaders, particularly those who still had not forgiven the Fire Nation for the Hundred Year War, appeared to thrive in knowing that the dangerous firebender was on the loose and causing chaos in her nation now, rather than in everyone else's.
They certainly would set aside such thoughts going forward, though, if she had finally started venturing into their lands.
"What the hell is she doing in the Northern Water Tribe?" Sokka asked, frowning. "She had nothing to do with that place. She wasn't even in the siege of the north…!"
"Whatever her intent is, it can't be good," Aang grimaced. "Come with us, you can investigate the moon there if you want, Sokka, but we have to go."
"Not a dull day in this life," Katara sighed, shaking her head. "Toph? Can you stay and watch over Bumi?"
"Pfft. Take him with you. I'm not babysitting no weird, loud kids," Toph snapped. Katara huffed, and Aang smiled a little at her.
"He'll be safe with us. Let's take him too, might as well…"
He was nervous. Fear guided their every choice: whatever Azula was up to, this was a profound change of behavior, entirely unlike her. Had she decided to return to the old Fire Lords' legacy after all? Did she intend to destroy the other cultures again, rather than solely focusing on sabotaging her brother's rule?
And with the moon being in such shape… Sokka didn't think he could do right by Yue when it came to that particular problem, but he certainly could help by keeping her people safe. As much as he wanted to learn more about the moon's condition, Aang wasn't wrong to suggest that he joined them. Even if he had no idea if he'd be able to help much against Azula, should it come to that, he meant to be there to offer whatever support Aang and Katara might need of him.
"Alright. Let's get going," Sokka said: his compliance, and the fact that they didn't need to say more to convince him, appeased and surprised his friends.
His mood hadn't been the brightest over the past months. Perhaps over the last year, altogether. It didn't suit the typically rambunctious man to grow withdrawn and thoughtful, but to most, it seemed to be a matter of guilt and fear pertaining the moon and its status. His constant investigations on the subject, his anguish, seemed to drive many people away from him… though no one had drifted quite as far from him as Suki. After making up her mind to move to Republic City, two years earlier, misfires in their relationship had resulted in their return to a long-distance relationship, though this time, one that hardly seemed to be a relationship at all. She was back in Kyoshi Island right now: Sokka hadn't seen her in over six months.
Katara often suggested that he ought to visit her again, trying her best to be supportive of her brother while also struggling to keep up with his fluctuating moods. After a first visit to Kyoshi Island after she left Republic City, Sokka never agreed to go again. His travels, as of late, solely related to meeting astronomers and researching whatever he could about a darkening moon. To this moment, he had found nothing.
Thus, he hoped things would change for the better once they landed in the Northern Water Tribe: local troops received them, standing in a rare alliance with a cluster of Fire Nation soldiers, too. That the day had come when they could work together rather than fighting each other certainly felt like a miracle, but it was one that Sokka couldn't even bother cherishing right now.
"We're expecting Azula to arrive by sea, on a stolen hot-air balloon," Zuko explained, once Aang, Katara and Sokka arrived – Bumi nestled in his mother's arms, sucking on his thumb. "It seems she took one from the Air Force's base…"
"What, she took it just like that?" Sokka asked. Zuko grimaced.
"She beat up everyone on her way in and out, if you really want me to specify that much…"
"Any deaths?" Aang asked. Zuko shook his head.
"Not that I know of. She just wanted the balloon, I guess," he said. "I have no idea if she even knows how to pilot them, but if she doesn't, then she'll take longer to arrive, or she might even…"
"You're not wishing an accident will stop her from getting here, are you?" Aang grimaced.
"Well… I'm not, not fully. A non-lethal one, maybe, but… who the hell can control how that kind of thing happens?" Zuko sighed, shaking his head. "At any rate, we'll keep watch over the skies. She'll be arriving in the shroud of darkness, we're in the dark period after all… so spotting her won't be easy. But we have to do our best to catch her once she shows up."
"We'll find her. Appa can patrol the skies, and if anything's amiss, we'll track her down at once…" Aang said. Sokka sighed, running a hand over his hair.
"It sounds like you guys have most everything under control, right?" he said. Zuko eyed him remorsefully. "I'm just going to go find a lunar expert, if there's any. It's the main reason why I wanted to come anyway, and… I think you guys will get her without issue, right? Right."
"Sokka…" Katara sighed. "Please, at least don't get your hopes too high. What's going on with Azula is manageable, at least, but…"
"Is it? Girl's been on the run for ten years and nobody's locked her down since we took her to look for their mom," Sokka said: his words hit square in the pride of his three friends. "I'm just saying…"
"If that's the kind of thing you'll be saying, maybe go find your astronomer after all," Zuko scoffed. Sokka shrugged, raising his hands defensively.
"Call me if there's anything I can do… though I rather doubt it," he said, turning on his heels and marching out of the Palace room where Zuko had been outlining their plans and strategies to capture Azula so far.
Sokka did exactly what he intended to do: the experts in the north were finally as concerned and eager to find a solution as Sokka was… but they had no idea what was going on, either. That discouraged the warrior at once.
After several hours of meetings with experts and visits to the local libraries to, as usual, find nothing on the phenomenon that concerned him so much, Sokka's patience was at an end. He felt demoralized, broken in ways he shouldn't be over what might just be some cosmic cloud of some sort hugging the moon…
But there more to his misery than that. He had failed Yue once, he hadn't been able to protect her from the terrible sacrifice she'd needed to make. She had been as good as a child, and she had given up her life to save her people. The magnitude of her sacrifice seemed to hit him harder and harder every time he thought about it…
His struggles with Suki weren't related to Yue, but the moon's state had certainly worsened matters further between them. His unwillingness to open up to Suki came from an obvious place: she didn't care to be second place to Yue in his heart, and no matter how many times he told her love didn't work that way, she refused to hear it. Suki's anxiety over the moon had nothing to do with his: she didn't care that it was obscured or not. She wanted him to have his head down on earth rather than up in the sky… and the more she had pressured him about it, the less he wanted to do that.
Memories of Yue shouldn't have been so painful, he had lost her so soon… they barely even had a relationship by the time she kissed him goodbye. He'd never know what might have been. Perhaps that, over all, tormented him beyond reason. But deep down, what hurt most was the knowledge that someone as valuable, as loyal, as true to her people was gone… the Northern Water Tribe would grieve her death forevermore, he knew they would.
His feet carried him aimlessly across the Water Tribe's streets until he reached a location he had approached by instinct: the bridge where he had met Yue for their very first private outing. Where he had given her a gift… where she had kissed him before running away from him. The mixed signals he got from her never made sense to him… perhaps that was why the moon's condition anguished him so. It certainly was much like Yue to show distress signals that simply didn't make sense and that he couldn't interpret, try as though he might…
The bridge finally came into view. He was of half a mind to step on it, to talk to the moon from there, in the abstract, irrational hopes that doing so would help Yue… when he realized that someone else, clad in a heavy blue parka, stood exactly where he had wanted to go.
He frowned: it was quite late by now. Was someone else meeting their beloved at the bridge that night? Maybe it was a popular spot for that purpose, and he just didn't know it…
But even though he could only see the person from behind, he had the feeling they weren't actually waiting for something. No, whatever they wanted, it was already there…
In the water, right underneath the bridge.
Had they dropped something? No, they weren't acting with the urgency of someone who had lost a valuable in the canal. Instead, they were… speaking. It was a female voice, he realized, as he approached it…
A familiar female voice, he thought, with a dark shiver.
It wasn't enough that she was speaking when there was no one else around: she was gesticulating in strange ways, too, as if... as if she were arguing with something. With someone. With the water? With the river?
Sokka's heart sank: Azula was already here. And from what he could tell, Zuko's claims that her sanity was somehow restored were entirely untrue, just as Sokka had constantly suspected.
"… You're entirely out of your mind if you expect I can get there just like that! He's already here, he brought soldiers, and if any of them spot me, I'll be done for!"
Sokka frowned, inching closer quietly: she knew Zuko was here, then. Of course she did…
"And no, I refuse to send the hot-air balloon away as a decoy. If I did that, I'd be stuck in this frozen hellscape unless your people so very kindly tossed me into the sea and I miraculously survived long enough to reach the Northern Earth Kingdom. And as powerful a firebender as I may be, I would not survive a dip in your terribly frozen sea."
Who the hell was she talking to? Sokka frowned. Before, she constantly spoke to someone, or about someone, who appeared to be her mother… but not this time. Now, she was talking to someone from the Northern Water Tribe…? Who had she ever even met from the Tribe? She wouldn't have come across anyone from the North Pole in the last decade, she only ever operated in the Fire Nation after all…
"Ugh, just… shut up. I brought you where you wanted to go, didn't I? Isn't this enough? Flow into this river and find your pathetic fish. Get back inside it and leave me be."
A pathetic fish? Sokka frowned. A northerner… and a fish? His heart pounded, and he frowned as he glanced towards the arguing Azula again.
It made no sense. It couldn't be.
But… could it?
Curses, was Azula connected to whatever was happening to the moon?
The idea made him see red for a moment. He snarled as he stopped hiding, striding up to the bridge with a heavy scowl: she didn't notice him, busy as she was scoffing at whatever she had just heard from the river now…
"I am absolutely unconcerned with your sad stories of failed romances, understood? What do I care if you shamelessly kissed that idiot here? Honestly, though… what kind of terrible taste in men did you have to do something like that, Yue?"
Sokka froze on the spot. His footfall startled Azula when he stopped abruptly.
She jumped, immediately taking up a defensive stance… and her eyes widened when they found his.
"W-what…? You…! Wait. Wait… oh! Oh, so that's it!" Azula exclaimed, lowering her hands again at the sight of him. Sokka gritted his teeth, taking a defensive kata of his own. "This is what you wanted! Yue, he's here!"
She turned towards the river: Sokka gritted his teeth, glancing at the water to find there was nothing there. Azula, however, spoke with such enthusiasm he was taken aback entirely.
"Azula…?" he called her, his voice trembling and uneasy.
"There you go! He came to see you! Aren't you happy now? He still loves you, congratulations!" Azula smiled wildly. "Now, would you so kindly get out of my head and leave me be?!"
The final declaration caused Sokka's confusion to increase… far more than his apprehension, though. He blinked blankly before stepping closer, startling the fallen Princess.
"You. Stay where you are. What do you think you're doing?" she said, her previous, near hysterical excitement shifting completely into wariness.
"I… need an explanation. Right now," Sokka said. Azula scowled, eyes scouring him and their surroundings quickly.
"You're… alone? Where's the Avatar? I saw the shaggy beast descending into the city," Azula said. Sokka grimaced.
"You… for how long have you been here, exactly?"
"I arrived about a day before Zuzu did. The wretch couldn't have taken residence in a more inconvenient place of the city for my purposes," Azula said, with a dry grin. Sokka scowled. "But I should be used to it by now. My brother's certain my entire life is a matter of inconveniencing him, but the longer this goes on, the more certain I become that it's the other way around, instead."
"No kidding," Sokka said, skeptically. "What, exactly, were you trying to do? You said something about… wait, Azula. You… you mentioned Yue. A fish, too. W-what were you…? Are you trying to kill the Moon Spirit too?"
"Ah. Of course you'd think that," Azula said, before letting out a derisive smile. "I would not be quite so self-defeating, mind you. If I did that, I might just cause a major catastrophe, where the ocean would go berserk as it tried to tear me to shreds, much as it did with Admiral Zhao. I wouldn't quite wish to share in his fate, you see… not to mention, that damnable fish is my only hope to get rid of the unpleasant stowaway I'm carrying in my head, so, mind you, I'd like to keep it alive and healthy for the time being so I can send her back there as soon as possible."
"Well… the experts said the fish, Tui, is alive and healthy," Sokka said. Azula shrugged.
"Good for it. Her. Whatever you want to call a fish," she sighed, shaking her head before glancing at the river again. "What do you mean….? I'm not going to do that. You haven't pestered me for a year just for me to play nice and greet your ex for you. Shut up."
"Azula… this is weird. I'm supposed to be here to help them capture you because evidently that's why Zuko came here, I don't need to tell you that…" Sokka said. Azula scoffed, glaring at him sideways.
"Indeed. And yet you're here, talking to me, not brandishing weapons, just… looking at me like you're a terrified puppy too curious for his own good," Azula said, eyeing him skeptically. "Why?"
"Because…! Because I've overheard what you're saying to the river and I…! Okay, you know what? Just… tell me: what the hell is going on?" Sokka asked, eyes wide and pleading. "Look, I should be raising alarms and telling everyone that you're already here and up to no good…"
"But you're not," Azula said, raising an eyebrow. "Which suggests you're either having a leave of your senses or… you don't trust them to help you handle me. Not that you stand a chance on your own either, but still…"
"You don't want to kill Tui, you said. But you're… talking to Yue? In the river?" Sokka grimaced. Azula huffed and rolled her eyes.
"If it makes you feel any better? I'd much rather not be doing that at all. Your adored favorite princess is actually a colossal pain in the ass," she said, with a dry grin. Sokka shuddered.
"I… I don't understand," Sokka said, shaking his head. "I don't get it. Azula… you're talking to Yue? You're seeing Yue? B-but… why? Wasn't it your mother you used to see before?"
"Heh. Funny. I thought you'd never realized what my problem was," Azula smirked derisively. "My brother certainly never did. Maybe I should commend you for having basic intelligence rather than lacking it entirely, as he and the rest of your friends do, but that's as far as I'll go with flattery in your direction. As for why am I seeing your ex? Beats me. I don't know. I didn't ask for this. It just… started happening. A year ago, or so."
"A year?" Sokka said: he raised his gaze towards the moon, darkened as it remained. "That's… that's when the moon started to darken, Azula."
"Oh?" Azula said, blinking blankly and glancing into the night sky as well. "Huh. So, this annoying fool decided she was bored of being the moon and took to hounding me about nonsense instead? Isn't that nice of her?"
"What nonsense? Azula, what is she saying?" Sokka asked. "I…!"
"Wait," Azula frowned, raising a hand as to slow him down. She raised an eyebrow slowly, inching away from him. "Mind you… if I had an ex, which I don't, and my worst enemy started saying they're seeing said ex in all reflective surfaces they come across, and even in dreams on occasion, I would likely assume they're lying because normal people don't do that."
"We've established that you see things since well over ten years ago," Sokka said, with a dry grin. "But usually, as far as I could guess, it was stuff related to you. Right?"
"Right," Azula said, folding her arms over her chest.
"Look… if this were anything else, if you were doing this at some other time, I'd assume you've lost it and that you're going crazy again. But… the moon is like this. It's been a year. Nobody has given me any answers! I've never been able to figure out what's wrong with it, and you're finally a way to unravel that, if just a bit? So… so, please, talk to me. Tell me what's wrong. Tell me what she wants. I-if we achieve it, maybe the moon will clear up again! And then…!"
"And then you'll appease your conscience and I'll somehow get rid of her?" Azula asked, with a dry grin. "I expect otherwise. She's fickle, annoying, childish…! Yes, you're childish! You are as good as a child to me! You're sixteen, aren't you? Learn your place and stop speaking up against your elders!"
Sokka froze on the spot: yes, Yue would be sixteen, stuck forever at that age… the age she was when she had sacrificed herself. He was ten years older than her right now. Somehow, the thought hadn't truly materialized in his head so far.
He leaned over the bridge slightly, glancing into the reflection of the river… to find nothing. Just his muddled reflection, along with Azula's.
"You can't see anything, can you?" Azula asked him. Sokka sighed and shook his head. "Well, she can see you right now. She says… that you were more handsome back when you were younger."
"She… what?!" Sokka squeaked, cheeks flushing. Azula turned up her nose, a devious smirk spreading over her face. "Y-you… take that back! She didn't say that! Even if it were true, she wouldn't have, and you…! Can she actually see me? Azula, can she really…?!"
"Oh, only vaguely. She mostly sees whatever's around me," Azula said, with a shrug, as Sokka approached her. "Or so she says. Anyway, you do believe me when I say that she speaks with me, even though it's uncalled for constantly, and that it's truly your former girlfriend, or…?"
Sokka was nearly in contact with her when she trailed off, glaring at him in disdain as she inched away from him. Sokka smiled awkwardly.
"I just figured, I need to stand closer for her to see, so maybe if I stand close to you, I'll see her too…?"
"Step back or I will send you to the next life faster than you can say 'Yue.'"
"Okay, fine! Damn, I just… fuck, you have no idea what this means to me," Sokka said, stepping back indeed and smiling slightly. "I've spent a year thinking she's… she's catatonic! That she's been attacked, maybe, or that she's in trouble…! But she's just… what, taking a vacation inside your head?"
"If only she could've picked a better head to spend time in," Azula growled, glaring at the reflection again. "Oh, shut up. Empty praises will get you nowhere."
"What? Did she… praise you?" Sokka blinked blankly. Azula scoffed.
"She does more often than not. Empty words, not unlike the ones I've spent my entire life hearing," Azula said, bitterly. Sokka grimaced.
"Yue was an honest person, though. If she has something good to say about you…"
"She might as well save it. I don't want to hear it, and I'll never believe it," Azula said, firmly. She shook her head. "I'm not here, however, to discuss my confidence, self-esteem or people's willingness to sing my praises. I brought this annoyance to the Northern Water Tribe because she missed her people and I figured I might be able to get rid of her, at last, if I brought her here. She's a deceptive little brat, though, and asked to come to this bridge first, only to reminisce on whatever nonsense you two shared as teenagers here, and then she told me that I'll have to enter this terribly secret and secluded oasis hidden somewhere behind the Palace she used to live in, because she might just be able to flow out of me and into the fish if I take her there. So… that's why I'm here. I do not care for this place, I don't have the slightest intention of bringing anyone harm unless they do it to me first, and all I really, truly need is to be free from voices and illusions and seeing things that aren't there!"
Azula's chest heaved as she finished her rant. Sokka listened patiently throughout it all, and she glared at him defiantly after she was done, waiting for an answer. Her flow of thought had gone slightly overboard, it was true, but…
"Okay," Sokka said. Azula frowned. "Look… I don't think I should trust you. I'm not sure I'd ever know how. But at the same time… you're bound to be the only way I'll ever find a solution for Yue, for saving the moon, outright. Maybe… maybe if you see her in the oasis's pond, you'll truly be able to set yourself free from this connection. Although, before that, could you ask her if she wants to connect with me instead? I wouldn't mind… I wouldn't mind seeing her again."
"You're disgusting," Azula said. Sokka shuddered, glaring at her after her words sank in. Azula turned over the bridge and scowled. "This fool has been with a face-painted Kyoshi Warrior loser for the past ten years and yet he wants to see you again, isn't that right? Not only was he disloyal to you by choosing her, now he's disloyal to her by being here, asking to see you. Is this truly the man you were quite so keen on, Princess Yue?"
"You already questioned her taste in men before, thank you very much," Sokka said, eyebrow twitching. "I want to see Yue again, and that's not a crime, damn you! I care about her, I always will! She was my first love. I'm not expecting for her to come back from the dead, she has a duty as the Moon Spirit and she has to fulfill it…! But I… I have unresolved business, okay? I have burdens and things I'd like to talk about with her. If there's anything she needs, anything she wants, I'd love to make it happen. And no, I don't mean I want a reward, or that I want two girlfriends…! I just want her to be at peace. I want Yue to be safe and sound. I want to look up at the sky and believe she's watching over me, and that she'll always be watching over her people, too. Is that so awful of me?"
"It… sounds embellished and far too idealistic now. Either you're not being honest or you're far more upstanding than I expected. And I would sooner believe it's the former," Azula said. Sokka scoffed, pressing a hand to his face.
"Leave it to my luck that the one person who can help me communicate with Yue would be you," Sokka hissed. "Look, you'll kill two birds with one stone if you can transfer her to me somehow! You won't have to take her wherever you go anymore, and I won't pester you constantly about how Yue is doing, which I would otherwise, so…!"
"Wait. Wait," Azula frowned, staring at him in chagrin. "Are you trying to tell me… that if I don't do whatever you want me to do, you intend on stalking me for the rest of our miserable lives in retaliation for my unwillingness to cooperate with you?"
"Exactly. That," Sokka said, with a proud, sarcastic smile.
Azula scoffed, rolling her eyes and glaring at him.
"I refuse to play anything by your rules. The fact that you haven't rushed off to tell my brother that I'm here is… alarming," Azula snapped. "You'll give me away to him whenever you've had your fill of talking to Yue through me, I'm sure…"
"Not that you've done any of that for me so far," Sokka said, with a raised eyebrow. "Can she hear me?"
"Somewhat," Azula said, and he couldn't gauge whether she was being truthful or not.
"And you won't tell me what she's saying, even if she's talking to me, or will you?"
"Don't take it the wrong way, but she's long learned that I'm the only one who hears her. She smiled like a fool when she heard your voice and when she could hear you, yes, but she didn't speak directly to you so far, and…" Azula's word were cut off by a most unwelcome interruption. Her nose twitched slightly with irritation before she rolled her eyes and said. "Fine. Never mind. She says 'hi.'"
Sokka, to his utter disbelief, actually blurted out a chuckle at Azula's frustration. The fallen Princess glared at him reproachfully.
"I'm sorry this is happening to you, Azula," he said, with surprising honesty. "I bet it's incredibly inconvenient. But… it feels like you and her are the most unlikely combination, doesn't it?"
"Tell me about it," Azula huffed, shaking her head. "But that's not my concern right now, is it? I'll happily break off the unlikely combination and set her free, but I need to get to that place and… and I need your word that you won't give me away to Zuko after that's done. There's that, too."
"Oh. Uh…" Azula glared at him fiercely, and Sokka grimaced. "Look, I… wouldn't really want to give you away to him, true, especially when you're the first chance I've had to talk to Yue in over ten years. But… Zuko's not in a good place right now, Azula."
"Well, he's freezing his ass off in the North Pole, evidently, but…"
"I don't mean literally, I mean emotionally, or psychologically, or… whatever," Sokka sighed. "Your antics have had him on his toes for a long time. Reforming the Fire Nation is easier said than done…"
"Why, of course it is."
"And international pressures are always gaining on him. My point is… he captured your allies, and he made them tell him where you had gone. He… basically threatened he'd kill them if they didn't cooperate, going by what he told me."
"Pfft," Azula smirked, shaking her head. "And they didn't call his bluff? That's…"
"It wasn't a bluff," Sokka said. Azula's mirth dwindled. "I'm serious, Azula. I think he wouldn't kill you, no, but… he doesn't want you causing trouble anymore, and he's becoming harsher, and colder, and… well, maybe closer to your father, in a sense."
"Well, that's… not good for me, now, is it?" Azula said, with a weak smile. "While I would gladly have him resemble my father in the respectable senses that he could…"
"Would you, really?" Sokka asked, with a distasteful grimace.
"I'm certain he's going to take after him in the worst ways. Such as… treating his sole sibling as a problem to be rid of. Which…"
"Which is exactly what you've been trying to be for him over the past years, isn't it?" Sokka asked. Azula's discomfort couldn't be more apparent. "Look, you're the key to sorting out whatever's going on in the sky. I can already tell that you are. But Zuko… he's going to be a hazard for you. So, whether you work with me, whether you get rid of Yue, whether the sky is restored or not… ultimately, your brother is going to hunt you down and…"
"And lock me up somewhere so I will no longer embarrass him," Azula recited, her voice muted. Sokka grimaced. "Someplace like… the asylum, I suppose. He did it once before. No doubt he'd do it again if he had the chance. More so if… i-if he knew I'm seeing and hearing things that aren't there again. I… Sokka, you…"
"Huh. We're on first-name basis, are we?"
"You've called me Azula, I might as well do the same," she hissed, staring at him intensely. "Swear to me you won't let me fall into his hands. Help me… and whatever the hell I need to do to fix your Princess and send her back into her fish, I'll do it."
"It's honestly quite messed up, isn't it?" Sokka said, running a hand over his hair as he scrutinized her with uncertainty. "It's like… like you're holding Yue hostage against your will."
"Or she's holding me against hers. Which is illogical," Azula hissed. Sokka sighed. "I may be wrong to think I'm a victim in all of this, but I swear to you, I asked for none of it. It was bad enough to see my mother in my head only to realize later that it was never her, and that I truly had lost my senses…"
"Azula…" Sokka said, eyeing her with compassion. She snarled, stepping away from me.
"Don't… don't pity me. That's the last thing you ought to do," she hissed. "My mind's broken state is my business. Hence why I'd much rather your former girlfriend stopped making it hers. But clearly… I'm at a standstill in a crossroads that I'd much rather not be in. So all I can think of doing, right now, is fixing this mess by returning her to where she's supposed to go. Either you come with me and help me do it, or…"
"I will."
Azula frowned. Sokka breathed deeply and nodded.
"I'll get you there. I know a way," he said, glancing back towards the cliffs that hugged the Water Tribe's Palace. "Just… will be a slightly long hike. But if you're up for it…"
"I'm ready for anything. Most of all, to stop seeing and hearing Yue," Azula said, with a dry grin. "If you're serious… then lead the way."
Sokka nodded: within moments, he and Azula, who hid her face under the hood of the parka she most likely had stolen at some point in her journey, had walked all the way to the outskirts of the Northern Water Tribe. A long climb uphill, exhausting and draining, more so under such low temperatures, eventually saw them reaching the cliffs, and from there, they had to walk the icy trek all the way to the back of the city: long ago, Zuko had escaped with Aang through the zigzagging trail that led into the oasis from the tall cliffs of the polar casket. It stood to reason that they would be able to enter the oasis undetected that way, too.
"Say… I've agreed to not hand you over to Zuko," Sokka said, walking by Azula's side: she was much calmer now, when there were no reflections from which Yue could peer at her. "But even though I did… are you going to keep causing trouble for him after this is said and done?"
"That's not your business," Azula answered, curtly. Sokka sighed.
"It kind of is. He'll kill me too if I help you keep messing with him," Sokka groaned. Azula smirked.
"He might. You could wind up stuck with me just as badly as Yue is, how about that?" she said. "A most unfortunate fate for you, peasant."
"You already proved you know my name. Use it," Sokka said, huffing.
"I'll call you whatever I please," Azula said, simply. Sokka rolled his eyes.
"Either way, my point is… can you just do something else with your life?" Sokka asked. "It has to get old, trying to piss off your older bro-…"
"No, it really doesn't."
"Seriously?"
"It's better than anything else I can do anyway. It's not like I have anywhere to be, anywhere to go, I… I belong nowhere to begin with and he's sitting on the throne that might have given me a purpose otherwise," Azula said, with a careless shrug. "As bad as his situation might be, mine is certainly worse. He can have his throne all he wants, but he's not going to keep it without pushback of any sorts."
"You're way too smart to waste your life away doing something as nonsensical as being someone's… personal pain in the ass?" Sokka said, with a grimace. Azula scoffed. "Come on, now. You can't even tell me it's still fun for you. More so when your friends, or just allies, whatever they are, are in danger. I can try to help you break them out if you want, you know? Would be dangerous, but if you promised…"
"I'll make no promises of good behavior," Azula scoffed. "I couldn't care less to spare Zuzu from my worst…"
"And your friends from getting killed?" Sokka asked. Azula frowned.
"Are they even that?" Azula asked. "Granted, you think Zuko tried to kill them, but…"
"Threatened to, if anything…"
"It's not like they hadn't already stabbed me in the back before that, anyhow."
Sokka frowned as he stopped. Azula didn't slow down, stubbornly trudging on, her bag strapped over her shoulder.
"What…? They betrayed you?" Sokka asked, frowning. "And how the hell did they know where you would be, if that's the case? Did you ask them to come with you and they refused?"
"I'm only here now because they demanded that I came," Azula hissed. Sokka sped up, catching up to her again. "I was… distracted. Constantly scattered because of Yue popping up at every possible reflective surface around me. I was jumpy at first, when I didn't understand what was going on. I couldn't even look at poorly reflective metal without seeing a reflection of a silhouette, of something that wasn't there. She shows up in every liquid surface I see... and mirrors. Steel armor, anything of the sort. At first, when I realized what was wrong, I tried to hide it… but then, things got complicated. Zirin… she caught me talking to Yue more than once. She thought I was slipping again.
"I came clean about what was happening. They told me to get it together. I tried. Our latest operations, however, had been failures and… and yes, in part, because I'm hardly fully there. Yue is… is taking a real toll on me, damn her. And damn Zirin all the more for… for telling me to either sort this out, get rid of her, or get lost for good."
"She told you that?" Sokka said. Azula smirked, eyeing him with unrestrained deviousness.
"Funnily enough… she failed to pull off whatever it is she wanted to do when I was gone. When I was the leader? I only got a handful of us captured. One operation under Zirin's leadership and the whole group goes under. Serves her right for being so full of herself…"
Azula cackled without remorse, and Sokka raised an eyebrow as he watched her with uncertainty. In any other circumstances, he wouldn't have wanted to hear a single word Azula might say… and he found that was probably a terrible reaction now. He didn't truly understand the first thing about the woman walking beside him now… and because he didn't, now Yue was her unwilling hostage, or Azula her unwilling host, and he had no idea how to approach her. If he'd done better, tried harder to be as friendly to her as they'd been to Zuko, after he turned…
There was no denying that Azula didn't make it easy. But talking to her now revealed that her dangerously clever mind was nowhere near as hopelessly broken as Azula herself might think it was.
"Either way, it's just me and Yue, going forward. While I wouldn't particularly care whether my former allies are free or not, I certainly would rather they're not murdered," Azula said, after her amusement receded. "I understand I failed as their leader, anyway. I'm in no condition to lead the group at all, and I failed to deliver on my many promises. Nonetheless… it's a sore spot for me, as you may imagine, to so much as think of allowing my allies to turn their backs on me. I've had enough of that for a lifetime."
"Surprising that you didn't lash out at them for it, though," Sokka said. "Or did you?"
"Some insults were traded, sure. A bit of fire. Some lightning. Maybe a slap or two."
"Who landed those?"
"Me, of course. Not that Zirin didn't try, but she failed."
Sokka smiled a little, shaking his head. Azula raised an eyebrow.
"And that amuses you, somehow?" she asked.
"Sounds like you were giving as good as you got. Not much of a crime when you see it that way," Sokka said. "Look… there's just got to be a better future for you. I don't know what it could be, but…"
"Stop trying to fix my brother's messes for him. He doesn't deserve that much devotion or help," Azula said, shaking her head. "Hell knows how so many of you are so eager to eat off his hand, let alone to convince me to walk away and leave him be…"
"I don't eat off his hand," Sokka squirmed, looking at her in chagrin. Azula smirked. "But… he's my friend. And more than that, his role in the world is a little bit essential at making peace a reality, you know? But he's got, uh… quite the temper. And that means that, if he gets angry or anything sets him off, he might just end up derailing all our hard work at restoring balance so far."
"How is that any of my business?" Azula said, bluntly.
"Why would it not be? He's your brother," Sokka said. Azula scoffed.
"Ask him what that means to him. I give as good as I get, as you put it before," Azula said. "I don't need a brother who doesn't need me."
Her words struck deeply in Sokka's gut: truthfully, he had seldom tried to think of things from Azula's point of view. He had sympathized with Zuko over his struggles… but suddenly, standing on the other side of that ordeal revealed that maybe Azula acted out as she did for reasons beyond what was apparent.
"At any rate, you should shut up," Azula said, startling Sokka. "This is the first chance I've gotten for some peace and quiet for hours and you keep rambling. Be quiet."
"Well… I can't be quiet just like that," Sokka pouted. Azula huffed, rolling her eyes. "There's a lot of things I want to know, a lot of things I want to ask, and…"
"And I should be the least of your concerns. You're here for Yue, aren't you?" Azula scoffed. Sokka winced.
"Right. Uh. Thing is, it's hard to figure out what to do with that, but… say, you can see her, you said? In every reflection you look at? Like, in place of yourself, or…?"
"Behind my reflection, usually," Azula answered. "What about it?"
"Well… what does she look like?"
"Oh? Either you're finally questioning the veracity of my tales or you're being a creep. I'm not sure which one is worse," Azula said. Sokka winced.
"I just… well, maybe more the first one than the second?" Sokka admitted. "Though a part of me does wonder if she really is stuck at sixteen. I'm not sure why I didn't think about that ever before…"
"Because you've grown older and you foolishly assumed so would she. Not the case," Azula said, simply. "She's indeed a sixteen-year-old girl with dark skin, blue eyes, white wavy hair that seems to float, much like her fancy white robes. Frankly, that dress she wears is far more elegant than anything I've seen the rest of her people wear. Guess they left the good fashion for the royalty…"
"Or that's just her moon outfit," Sokka said, with a careless grin. Azula raised an eyebrow.
"Huh. I have no idea how spirits handle dress codes," she admitted. "But frankly, I doubt I'll ever understand the first thing about them. Spiritual matters are unnerving."
"Really? Says the girl who was masquerading as a spirit…"
"I assumed everyone else would think they were unnerving too, and they'd run away or die of fright if we presented ourselves as such," Azula said, simply. Sokka eyed her skeptically. "What?"
"You make no sense," he said, though he smiled slightly at her. "It's kind of entertaining, though."
"Why, I aim to please," Azula said, with a sarcastic grin that suggested the opposite thing, instead.
They reached the chasm then, and Azula glanced down at the oasis. From this distance, she couldn't see Yue… but she knew she would, once they were in the oasis itself.
"Come," Sokka urged her, approaching the entrance of the zigzagging trail that led into the oasis. "This way."
Azula followed him down, and they moved as quietly and inconspicuously as possible: they could see from afar how the military alliance between the Fire Nation and the Water Tribe happened to be in full swing. Numerous hot-air balloons were ready to intercept hers… firebenders, waterbenders, non-benders, everyone wanted a piece of her, from the looks of it. She sighed: it was a good thing that Yue had been able to navigate her into the city safely, and that she had lain low in it for as long as she could manage.
The oasis was a rare location in the Tribe, where it was warm enough that Azula finally stopped stoking her inner fire to get by. She sighed in relief as she followed Sokka, crossing small wooden bridges until she finally reached the pond…
Two koi fish, one black, one white, swam in its waters. Sokka sighed happily at the sight of the white one.
"Seems untouched. Good," he said, smiling kindly at the spirit. Tui and La continued swimming together, and Sokka turned towards Azula. "As you know, if you do anything you shouldn't…"
"I won't hurt the one thing that might just get me out of this mess, damn you. You don't need to say it again," Azula huffed, approaching the pond and glaring at the fish.
To Sokka's surprise, Tui broke formation from La… as though to stare at Azula. The Princess scowled… and upon looking into the water, she soon saw Yue.
"Well? Get going. Your ride is here," Azula hissed.
Youthful, kind and earnest, Yue smiled at her, and then at Tui.
"My manifested form upon the human world… it's good to see that it remains intact. This is the Moon Spirit, Azula."
"I can see that. Now, kindly get out of my head and into the fish, would you?" Azula scoffed.
Yue's smile soured slightly: the clueless expression on her face brought a scowl to Azula's.
"I… I'm not trying to say that I can't do it, but, uh, I… I don't really know how."
"You… what? You don't know how?!" Azula exclaimed.
"Don't be mad! I just…!"
"You brought me all the way here just to make fun of me? Get out of my head and into the fish, right this moment!"
"I would love to! But I don't know how, I said!" Yue exclaimed, flustered, tears in the corners of her eyes.
Azula's chest heaved as she glared at her. Yue's manipulative remorse would not affect her. It couldn't. It wouldn't. She was just…
"You miserable, irksome, spoiled brat!" Azula roared. Sokka gripped her shoulder, and Azula shook her off.
"Be quiet!" he urged her, startling Azula. She had expected a scolding over how she was treating Yue, instead. "They're going to notice you're here if you keep this up. So… shush. If you have to berate her, do it… quietly. Nicely."
"Nicely? Fuck off," Azula said, rolling her eyes, even though she didn't raise her voice again. "I've been stuck with this annoyance for a year. And she can't even figure out her problems and help herself out of my head! I'm quite certain it can't be a nice place to inhabit, even I would like a break from myself from time to time, so I sincerely doubt that she's…!"
"W-well… you're quite smart. I do like the way you think, even if you do things that aren't that nice. But you're so skilled at seeing through people, at devising plans quickly, and…!"
"Stop it! I want no pointless, ridiculous, empty praise from you!" Azula scoffed. Sokka grimaced.
"She was praising you again?" he asked. Azula snorted.
"I know! It's maddening," Azula shook her head.
"What… what was she praising about you?" Sokka asked, puzzled. Azula stared at him skeptically. "I'm just wondering…!"
"She said I'm smart. That she likes the way I see through people," Azula said, with a sardonic grin. "And I'll give her a new one right now: you're thinking there's nothing about me worth praising, aren't you?"
"What? No! I mean, there definitely are things I'd praise about you, but I'm just… surprised that Yue would pick up on them?" Sokka said, with a weak smile. Azula glared at him.
"You're a worse liar than she is."
"I'm not lying, though! You are smart as hell, that's why you're a menace to begin with!" Sokka squeaked. "And along with that, you're an incredibly powerful firebender, the strongest one alive as far as I know..."
"And don't you forget it," Azula said – somehow, his words were hitting the right place that Yue's seldom ever did.
"And you're…!" Sokka started, before freezing where he was. He cleared his throat and shook his head. "Anyway…"
"I'm… what?" Azula said, raising an eyebrow. Sokka grimaced.
"Can I tell you later?"
"Later, when?"
"Later when Yue can't hear it," he said. Azula scoffed.
"What? You're…? Oh, wait. You were going to praise my godlike beauty, weren't you?" Azula smirked, turning towards the pond again. "See how reliable he is? You're so stuck on him and hung up on the fool who can't see half a pretty girl without thinking…"
"You're much prettier than what you think you are!"
Azula froze: Yue's eagerness caught her off guard entirely as the reflection in the pond almost seemed flustered to say it.
"I wasn't about to say it because I knew you'd think I was lying, but it's not a lie!" Yue exclaimed, enthusiastically. "You're a very beautiful lady. Or, uh, well… runaway. I don't know what term you'd prefer for me to use…"
"Can spirits get hit on the head and lose all sense?" Azula asked. Yue blinked blankly.
"W-well… maybe? I don't know. Could they?"
"I'm asking because I'm starting to think that's what happened to you!" Azula exclaimed. Yue winced. "I'm taunting you, damn it: he's your ex! He's awkward about praising another girl's beauty in front of you! Why would you…?"
"Oh! Oh. Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, actually. A lot of girls are beautiful after all, many of whom I never knew, many of whom I never will. But I can see you very clearly sometimes, and I know that you're…"
"That's not the point, damn you!"
"Well, if you think I should be jealous… I'm jealous of a lot of things, actually. But that's neither here nor there."
"Oh, so you are jealous after all? Of… of what?" Azula said, frowning. Yue bit her lip and shrugged. "Yue…"
"Let's just say… I just want Sokka to be happy," Yue smiled, hands upon her chest. "I want him to live a full life, too. That I can't do it… it's no reason for him not to. And if he likes a girl, or loves one, well… I hope he'll find all the happiness with her that I couldn't grant him."
"You… you can't be this nice. That's ridiculous," Azula said, with a disgusted expression across her face. "Moreover, why are we discussing this at all?! Get into the fish!"
"I can't do it, I said. And with you being this cranky and constantly pretending I'm lying, I feel even more disinclined to stay in the pond forever."
"What, you're going to hound me until I decide your way of thinking and living is correct?" Azula asked, with a sardonic smile. "Well, yippie, then! Yue is right about everything, ever! Sokka is allowed to ogle every girl that crosses his path because she just wants him to be happy, like the absolute selfless koala-bear cub that she is!"
"Hey, don't talk to her like that!" Sokka huffed, though he frowned. "But… she said that? For real?"
"That she just wants you to be happy? She did. Isn't it ridiculous?" Azula said, rolling her eyes and shaking her head. Sokka frowned. "What? You're not going to tell me that…"
"I feel the same way about her."
Azula raised an eyebrow. Sokka's face shifted into a fierce mask… one that gave away his regrets and remorse far more profoundly than anything else might. She blinked blankly.
"Well, that's… good. Good for you," Azula said with a sarcastic smile. "But it has nothing to do with me. In fact, as you're both such selfless, pure, kind souls, maybe you should look into turning into the black fish. The ocean, right? Go on, do that, swim with her forever. Or, better yet, become her host in my stead. How about you do that? Then you can spend your life looking at your reflection in a mirror and telling Yue that you want her happiness while she tells you she wants yours and…! And I'll be free. Which is all that matters to me. How about it?"
"I… look, I'd take her off your hands if I could, but if she doesn't know how to go about it, neither do I," Sokka said, rubbing his forehead with his fingertips. "At best, maybe we could ask Aang if…"
"Not a chance. You're not involving the Avatar in this. Three's already a crowd, the Avatar would turn it into a full-blown party," Azula said, shaking her head.
"I don't know what to do, okay?" Sokka said, with a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry you're involved in this because... well, technically, it shouldn't have anything to do with you. You never even knew Yue and you've already spent a year stuck in this situation…"
"Exactly," Azula said, raising her hands emphatically before running her fingers through her hair.
"But at the same time… you're the only chance I have to communicate with her directly and figure out what's going on," Sokka said. Azula scoffed.
"Why would I…?"
"If we sort out what's going on with the moon?" Sokka said, gesturing towards the grey sphere in the sky. "Maybe we can break the two of you free from each other. So ask Yue… or tell me her answer, anyway, if something changed recently. Or rather, a year ago. Ask her… if there's something wrong and we can fix it. Please."
Azula frowned but turned towards the pond again. Yue gazed at her helplessly, and Azula crooked an eyebrow.
"Well? Cat-owl got your tongue? You're a lot more chipper than that, usually," she said.
Yue sighed, lowering her gaze. Something immediately alerted Azula that Yue might be lying when she answered that question… but that was no one of Azula's business, even if that were the case.
"I… I don't really know," Yue said, nervously. "One day… something crashed into the moon. I think it was a comet? I'm not sure, I don't really know what it was. I just felt it, and it jolted me around violently. It felt like something loosened up in me, I guess. Ever since, I… I've been able to see you. Whatever happened that day, I… I can see you and only a little bit around you. I see you through every reflection. But as for why it happened, or how, or what it was, I… I don't know any of that. I also don't know how to fix it."
"So, in short, you're not much use," Azula said, cuttingly. Sokka frowned. "You don't know what happened beyond this strange cosmic collision or what you need to do to fix it."
"Cosmic collision?" Sokka repeated.
"Something crashed against the dark side of the moon, or so she says. After that, she wound up here," Azula said, pointing at her head.
She didn't say more. Didn't pressure more. She could tell that Yue was hiding something. She didn't know if she could trust Sokka to keep his cool if he realized Yue wasn't being completely truthful about whatever she had just explained.
"Then… maybe something loosened up?" Sokka grimaced.
"If you're about to wonder how does someone fix the moon, why, don't ask me. Get your earthbending friend to fly across space and do it herself," Azula suggested. Sokka grimaced.
"She wouldn't go for it," he sighed. "But… damn. Then something did happen. Something physical. And maybe… maybe she's here because of a bigger reason than we know. Like… you know how sometimes people say spirits haunt the living because they have unfinished business?"
"And she does?" Azula asked, glancing at Yue in the pond with utter skepticism. Yue's eyes gleamed upon hearing Sokka's latest idea. "I don't know about that. What kind of unfinished business are we talking about here, and how would she go about fulfilling it? Because so far, I'm carrying her around with me, but she isn't controlling me or anything of the sort. So, if you get any funny ideas of being with her through my body or so…"
"If she can't even go into the fish, how's she going to possess you completely?" Sokka sighed. "Look, I know what it looks like, but… I get it. She's the girl I lost years ago. But I'm not that boy anymore. I'm fully grown… and I just want to do right by her. I failed Yue, okay? Right here, in this very place, I couldn't stop Zhao from doing what he did, I couldn't save her from her fate. I've carried that with me from the moment it happened and I don't think I'll ever stop being burdened by that, so…"
"So… that's it. It's your fault," Azula concluded. Sokka winced. "She can't go back to business as usual because she has to fix whatever's fucked up in your head."
"Wait, what? No! It… it can't be about me! There's a lot of people here who loved her too!" Sokka exclaimed, blushing. Azula hummed, glancing about herself.
"True, to a fault. I suppose… she had her people's love. Her father's love," Azula said, bitterly. "You were but a footnote."
"I… hey!"
"He was much more than that."
"Oh, really?" Azula regarded Yue with a sneer once more. Yue frowned.
"Sokka… was my first true friend. My first chance at knowing something beyond the boundaries of the North Pole. He… he was fascinating to me. Him and his sister and the Avatar… they were younger than me, but they were heroes in the making. I looked up to them. I wanted… I wanted to know what it was like. If I hadn't died, I… I would have liked to join Sokka one day, maybe, traveling the world. But of course, that never could happen, so…"
"So, it is his fault for giving you false expectations."
"That's not true. And… actually, I know now! If Sokka is right and I have unfinished business… it's because of the dreams and hopes I couldn't fulfill. If that's why I'm still here… then that's what you have to do. Azula: I want to see the world!"
"Oh, really, now? And you think I'm some sort of magical entity that grants wishes willy-nilly?" Azula asked, hands on her hips. "You want to see the world? In case you haven't noticed, Yue, I'm not exactly welcome anywhere in this damn planet, I'm not even supposed to be here to begin with. I can't take you anywhere you want to go."
"Wait… she wants to see the world, then?" Sokka said, a slow smile spreading over his face. Azula scoffed.
"What's it to you?" she said.
"Azula… this might just be the chance to fix things," he said. Azula rolled her eyes. "I know, this all sounds stupid to you… but it's not. I never could do anything for her, but if I can help you do this, if the two of us can show her the world…!"
"Wait, help me do this? You'd help me travel wherever she wants to go?" Azula asked, amused and dismissive. "I doubt even you can pull that off, Sokka, and…"
"And what if that's the only solution for this?" Sokka asked. "What if she won't leave until she's fulfilled, happy, satisfied with everything she saw?"
"Then she'll be unfulfilled, unhappy and unsatisfied for as long as I may live, and then we'll just go our separate ways once I die. I'll just spend my entire life burdened with a spirit that decided to hitch a ride in my head," Azula snapped, glaring at the pond again. Yue pouted.
"I might just leave if it works out. If we see all the places I'd like to see, I… I'll at least shut up more often. Can I offer you that much?"
"That's hardly worth anything, as far as promises go," Azula grumbled.
"Well, beyond doing this, I don't know what else we could do. And frankly, Azula, you could do much worse…"
"Oh, I could? And what made you the judge of that?"
"I won't be that needy, I won't be that picky! I just… I just want to experience things alongside you. I could be asking you for far worse, like… like spending a year or longer folding paper cranes so that they can fulfill my wish to, say, gain a new body so that I can experience all those things myself! Would you rather do that, instead?"
"Don't get cheeky with me, you…"
"Then listen to me, please: you came this far. I love my hometown and I missed it and I'm glad that we came…"
"Just admit that you told me to bring you to the fish just because you wanted to come back and see everything."
"Well, yes, but I did think this would work. I never imagined it wouldn't. When I sacrificed myself, I just flowed into Tui's body myself. I didn't expect it not to happen now… which I think means some part of me is still there, maybe. Either way, though… maybe all spirits go through moments like these. Where you suddenly regain access to the human world, and you long for what you've lost…?"
"Like a midlife crisis, but with spirits?"
"Yes! I mean, maybe? Does that make sense?"
"None of this makes the slightest bit of sense, Yue, so that question is unnecessary at the moment," Azula huffed, shaking her head.
"I'm just saying… I'm not asking you to do anything that awful. And besides, we both know that you're not even sure what to do next. Your friends weren't very nice the last time you were with them. So… why not give this a chance? Maybe, by traveling, we can also learn more about this kind of thing, about spirits and their cycles, and even learn if there's legends about the Moon Spirit that preceded me. Might be that they went on a journey like this! Right?"
"Beats me," Azula sighed, shaking her head and glaring at Sokka skeptically. "You."
"Me?" Sokka said, arms folded over his chest. "What is it? What is she saying?"
"She's adamant that she wants us to go on this damn road trip you proposed. You say you'd go too," Azula said. "You want to do right by that girl, which means you'll be stuck with me for the foreseeable future. Do you love her quite so much that you'd bear with me for that long?"
"Uh… yeah. I think so," Sokka said. Azula laughed.
"I have the feeling you're going to regret that," she said. Sokka shook his head.
"I don't think so," he said. "But then… we're doing this? We're traveling the world together?" he asked. Azula sighed heavily, rolling her eyes.
"I'm all out of ideas. And I have nothing better to do. Getting pushed around and annoyed to death by this fool sounds like all I've got at hand at the moment," Azula growled. Yue, despite the insults, grinned giddily at her. "I'll just say it's rather inappropriate of you to say you love her or that you want to do right by her when you're taken, Sokka. What would Suki say, I wonder?"
Yue winced, eyeing Azula guiltily. Azula teasingly mouthed the word 'homewrecker' at her, and Yue pouted in her direction as Sokka sighed, shaking his head.
"I don't know what she'd say. She'll be fine, though," Sokka said. Azula raised an eyebrow. "I've spent the last year trying to figure out how to help Yue, she knows I have, and I'm not about to stop now. So…"
"Terribly trusting of her if that's how it is," Azula said, a pang of guilt, and even envy, blooming in her heart. To think Sokka had someone who trusted him to that extent, to the point where she wouldn't mind seeing him off on a journey where he would be reconnecting, possibly, with his first love… a relationship of that nature had to be incredibly strong.
"Yeah, well, that's neither here nor there. Where's your hot-air balloon?" Sokka asked. Azula shrugged. "I'll get my things and meet you there. Is that too much to ask?"
"I left it in a cave right past the city's walls," Azula said. "Yue navigated us into the city from there. Somehow, she didn't lead me astray. Can you get there on your own?"
"I hope so," Sokka said, breathing heavily. "I'll leave a message behind for the others to know I'm okay. I won't tell them about you, though. They'd hound us and hunt us down if I did."
"Just for the record… do you think you'll be safe, traveling with me?" Azula asked, amused. Sokka huffed.
"I'm not so brittle or breakable as to be scared of you like that, Princess," he said. Azula's amusement increased. "Along with that… if you did anything that could hurt me, I'm sure Yue would be very upset about it too. And then you'd get scolded by her constantly for having hurt me. You wouldn't want to put up with that, now, would you?"
His words did give her pause. Her amusement receded and she sighed as Sokka grinned proudly at her.
"Whatever. Meet me at the balloon in an hour. If you take any longer than that, we're leaving without you."
"Well, now, damn! No need to be so grumpy! In fact… wait here. I'll come back right here, we'll climb out, then we'll get to your balloon much easier that way. I don't know if I'd lose my way otherwise…"
"Get it over with quickly, then," Azula sighed, shaking her head.
Sokka grinned and sprung off through the wooden door at the other side of the oasis. Azula watched him go at first, before focusing her gaze on Yue. The Princess in the water smiled warmly at her.
"What weren't you telling me before? I didn't ask in front of him, but I ask now," Azula said. Yue winced. "Something's wrong with you, isn't there? Something weirder than we know. What's your purpose, exactly?"
"I'm not lying when I say that I wish I knew. But I really, really don't," Yue said, gazing at Azula earnestly. "Moreover… you'll be better off just enjoying the journey."
"Isn't the journey about you? You're the one who ought to enjoy it, not me," Azula huffed. Yue smiled.
"Going on the road with Sokka… I barely even let myself imagine that possibility. You haven't really set out yet, but it already feels like you'll help me fulfill a dream, Azula. Thank you."
"Why on earth are you so hung up on him?" Azula grimaced. "Not that I can't tell that he loves you lots, but… you are a Princess. Surely there were other better catches for you…"
"He's very handsome. You know he is."
"That's not my point," Azula said, stubbornly. "He's annoying, obnoxious, rambunctious, sanctimonious, loud…"
"He's fun. He's caring. He's kind. He's loyal. He loves people with his whole heart."
"Don't you think maybe you idealized him a little much?" Azula said. Yue giggled and shrugged.
"Then maybe I'll get to know him better, his real self, thanks to you. I do want to know what kind of man he has grown into… what kind of person he has been ever since I lost him. You could be right, but… I won't know unless we travel with him, anyway."
"Say what you will… I don't like setting out on this journey when you have ulterior motives," Azula said, curtly.
"Funny thing for you to say, considering you've been up to no good and having ulterior motives with everything you do for as long as I've known you, and most likely all your life…"
"Sass doesn't befit someone who looks as delicate as you."
"Unfortunately, I have plenty to offer you even so," Yue said, stubbornly. "I know you don't want to trust me. You don't want to trust anyone. But I swear… I don't want anything bad to happen to you. Or to Sokka. I want this journey to be… well, liberating for all three of us. It might do you good, even beyond what you expect. Don't you think?"
"Beyond cutting you loose and out of my brain? Perhaps," Azula said, curtly.
A journey with no ill intent, no deeper meaning beyond… sightseeing. Traveling. Tourism, she supposed. The concept was odd, out of place, especially considering she was a wanted criminal in at least two nations. Then again, a devious part of her couldn't help but wonder if she could give people the slip… if she could escape notice and avoid capture by Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation forces alike. Mocking Zuko and King Kuei that way certainly had its appeal…
She smirked after that. The Avatar's friend as her companion might just be a boon rather than a curse too, provided he could give her access to places she couldn't reach as herself. She could very well go incognito, hide behind other identities…
"Maybe you truly were a blessing in disguise all along," Azula told Yue: the Princess's reflection in the water offered her a broad grin.
Five minutes later, Sokka turned up. Azula nodded in his direction, and he cast one last glance at the pond, at the place where he had lost Yue, before setting out, following Azula in the uphill climb out of the oasis, and towards her hidden hot-air balloon. Strange circumstances had brought them together, but for the first time in a year, Sokka had broken his standstill… he was ready to get going. If there was anything left for him to do to help Yue find peace, he'd endeavor to do it, without question.
They faded from view again. The light faded, once they did.
Yue smiled, tightly hugging herself as she sat in place, in that unsettling darkness with tendrils that wrapped around her legs, slowly rising. She simply wanted to wait for the next glimpse into Azula's world, for any sign of life, of wonderment… of the fulfillment she ever felt whenever she could see the woman she had connected with.
"Yue…!"
A deep growl, and afterwards, a devious chuckle. The smile froze over her face, and tears bloomed in her eyes.
"You still have hope, I see! Hope, hope, hope, you silly girl, you beautiful girl, you wicked girl…! You know they cannot save you. You know no one can save you. No one would care to. Not even that boy you crave so much…"
She didn't truly crave him that way anymore. It didn't matter if she explained: no one listened. They thought they understood her human needs… they truly didn't. She knew her fate had been sealed when she gave up her life to save the Moon Spirit, and that all hope of a future with him had died at that moment. There was but one thing she wanted anymore, and it was all she could possibly want…
"You are safe here, with me. You are mine here, mine! Mine alone! And you will never belong to anyone else again!"
The tear spilled. She covered her ears: it didn't suffice to keep the noise from booming inside her head, reminding her bitterly that she would never go free… never again.

⋆ 𝓥𝓲𝓵 𝓢𝓬𝓱𝓸𝓮𝓷𝓱𝓮𝓲𝓽: 𝓛𝓲𝓹𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓴 𝓢𝓽𝓪𝓲𝓷𝓼 ⋆
This is for @offorestsongs ♡ Thank you so much for being so kind when it comes to my Vil works! Your reblog of my last x Reader story featuring Vil made my day, and I appreciate it so much ♡ I hope you enjoy! ♡
Tumblr media
⋆ Vil sits at his vanity, a box sitting beside him. A makeup brand he likes sent him a PR box of their latest product, a lipstick that's supposed to be stain and smudge proof. They sent him a variety of colors, from a light pink to a plum purple. So many shades to choose from, so many options. Just from the swatches alone he was already in love, thinking of outfits he could pair them with. First he has to test them though, to see if they truly are stain and smudge proof like they advertise. He could do it the traditional way, using a glass or a paper towel to see if it transfers. That was his original plan before he got a text from you, letting him know you were on your way. Now he has a better idea in mind, a small smile coming to his face as he awaits your arrival.
⋆ As soon as you entered his room he asks you to take a seat, gesturing towards his bed. You sit near the edge as you watch him through the vanity mirror, applying lipstick to his lips. The color he chose was a dark red, reminding you of wine. Once he's done he turns towards you, gesturing to his face as he asks for your thoughts. The color looked good on him, darker than what he would usually wear. He seems pleased by your response as he stands, walking over to you. He takes your hand, helping you up so you're standing in front of him. He looks you over, moving some pieces of hair out of your face with a smile.
"They say this lipstick is smudge proof, you know? Stain proof too. Let's test this theory, shall we?"
⋆ He cradles your face in his hands, holding it gently as he begins lavishing you in kisses. A gentle press to the shell of your ear, to your cheeks, to your forehead and nose. A quick kiss to your chin, Vil having you tilt your head as he kisses a trail down your neck. He saves your lips for last, kissing them gently before pulling you in deeper. He doesn't break it until you both need to catch your breath, leaning back so he can see his work. He feels disappointment shoot through him as he notices no marks on your skin, realizing the lipstick truly was smudge and stain proof.
⋆ I shouldn't be disappointed, he reminds himself, the lipstick doing exactly as advertised. Yet, he knows deep down, he wanted the lipstick to smudge. To stain your skin, marking you with every press of his lips. He clears his throat, getting your attention as he turns back to his vanity.
"I have a few more I need to test, so please bare with me. Give me a minute to remove this, and apply the next one."
⋆ If he grabs a lipstick from his bag that he knows does stain, instead of one from the PR box, well...you don't need to know that. If his kisses linger more this time, you don't say anything, waiting as he checks to make sure a mark was left before moving onto the next spot. Perhaps you should help him test his lipsticks more often, he couldn't help but think, watching as you turned into a work of art before his eyes.
It's a good thing I kept this lipstick, he thought, pressing his lips against yours and finishing his work. He leans back to look you over, pleased that he got the results he wanted this time.
"Beautiful" he says to himself, unable to resist pulling you in for one last kiss ♡

HER WAY — SULLY FAMILY
hello my loves!! it seems as though a lot of you enjoyed the first part!! so much so that i now wrote a second part to it!! before we get into it i would just like to thank you all for the support and nice messages <33 sadly i cannot respond to comments due to this being a side blog but know that i appreciate you guys sososo much <33 love u sm - nova .
ps : this is very short because i am very tired :(( also not read proof!! and also peep the little scene from my fav podcast ever !!
one , two
Tumblr media
IT'S BEEN MONTHS . months since the sky people returned to pandora. months since the raids started and months since ( name ) last saw her family.
" TO THE LEFT! TO THE LEFT! SOMEONE TAKE THAT DAMN TRAIN OFF OF THE RAILS "
" UNCLE TSU'TEY I WANT TO SEE THOSE HELICOPTERS GONE! "
" YOU GOT IT! "
that was a normal day for ( name ) now, riding her ikran into battle every few days in order to protect her people. she no longer was the little girl that would once run around in the forests of pandora, she was now the olo'eyktan, the fate of the omaticaya was in her hands and she was determined to bring them to victory once more.
or so was the plan.
" olo'eyktan ( name )! " a hurried voice called out towards the young woman.
" lu'ìkx. what's wrong? you seem to be in a hurry? "
" i see you, olo'eyktan . " the warrior greeted the woman before continuing. " i do not mean to panic you, but u'är and veinnì found this while patrolling, we think that this might be an issue that you and your uncle should talk about. " he said, handing her a piece of paper.
" i see, well thank you lu'ìkx, i shall discuss this with my uncle, you're dismissed now. "
Tumblr media
" uncle i cannot — you! cannot ask this of me. i will not. "
" ( name ), i understand, truly i do! but i cannot risk to lose you, i know yes, you're finally olo'eyktan but i'd rather you have no title than no life. " sighed tsu'tey . " i know that the thought of leaving breaks you but please listen to your old man for once. "
" ... "
" ( name ) please. you read the paper, they want to kill you, they won't stop until you aren't standing anymore so please follow your family, go to the reef and just forget about this place for a while. "
" .. if i leave now i will be able to join my family ... if i don't leave now i will be able to still protect my people, my people are very dear to me — "
" dearer than your family? "
" no ... not dearer than them. never dearer than them."
"there you go, that's your answer. go and prepare, you will be leaving in the morning. "
with a heavy heart ( name ) takes one more look at the forest before going to her tent. the gentle breeze and delicate smells caressing her skin. the forest was all she knew, it was her home, her sanctuary, she vowed to protect it with her all and now her promise will be broken.
' oh eywa please forgive me for this is not the way you gave me, please great mother forgive me for not being able to protect your creation. '
Tumblr media
the morning came with heart breaking news for the omaticayans, yet another treasured member was leaving.
yet another olo'eyktan was leaving and with that the last sully was gone as well. with one last glance ( name ) got on her ikran and started her journey towards the reef.
the journey was a rough one, heavy rains and cold winds that made them almost crash or the hot sun burning at her blue skin during the day seemed to discourage her second by second.
being alone made her realize how awful it was not hearing lo'ak and neteyam's banter, or jake's stories from back on earth or tuk asking the most random questions. she wonders why only now her brain decides to remind her of such times. perhaps during the time that she spent in the forest fighting she didn't have time to catch a break and think everything through.
no matter the cause, ( name ) straightened her back and continued to fly towards her destination. she would get to be reunited with her family soon.

... In this essay, I will reiterate that "Cad Bane is a depressed, sentimental bastard."
OK, so, @fat-tasty-krogan pointed out that the barrels of Bane's LL-30's are rusty in the Bad Batch via a screenshot and now I cannot stop thinking about things and connecting the dots.
Tumblr media
Here's me checking different angles. 100% rusty. This is a man who is the best bounty hunter in the galaxy, a man who is *the* best shot — that’s his livelihood right there. Something is wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've always thought Cad Bane was depressed, mostly owing to his behavior in the lost arc, but this solidifies it for me. Let's talk about the canon, shall we? (Fair warning: I may throw in headcanons or share some other thoughts along the way, but I will warn you ahead of time if it's an original idea versus what is considered to be canon).
Tumblr media
First, let's take the idea that Jango Fett is mentor to Cad Bane. This in and of itself says to me they had a close relationship and that they often worked together in some capacity. I will spare you my thoughts on the rest, but Jango does in fact associate with him and most likely in a meaningful way we never get to see. Jango Fett does not trust easy, yet he trusts him enough to be around his child; his prized possession, let's say.
Proof: When Boba first mentions Bane, (in chorological order) it is in the comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Him asking to spend time with Bane, and Jango saying "no, because you already know of him (and others like Zam)," means they had a close-knit relationship in my opinion. One that sadly comes to an end. In this comic, Jango wants to train Boba to deal with "the factor of the unknown," versus the known. Hmmm.
Moving right along.
The next time we see or hear anything about Boba and Cad being in the same room is during the Rako Hardeen/Box Arc, and in the audiobook CW: Stories of Light and Dark in the short story "Bane's story" that is read by Corey Burton as Cad Bane.
In it he states that the "kid's all right," and that he "owed his father a few favors." In the story, he reiterates what happens between him, Eval, and Obi-Wan to Bossk and little Boba Fett. It was Bossk and Boba who helped to create the diversion so that they could break out and escape.
Tumblr media
Bane returns, his job foiled, and explains why. At the end of the audiobook Boba has a plan to get them all out of jail, and he wants Bane to be apart of it. This is AFTER Aurra leaves Boba for dead on Florrum ( don't get me started on Hondo, WHEW - they knew each other too, for SURE ), before TBB, and before we see Bane with a plate in his head, this one:
Tumblr media
It is still present in the Book of Boba Fett.
Let's not rush ahead, though. Let's back up to a bit to where Cad Bane gets betrayed.
Tumblr media
#1 betrayal on screen is Obi-Wan Kenobi as Rako Hardeen. While I don't necessarily ship them, I can see how Cad was very much hurt by this, as he felt he had started to develop a kinship with another hunter, someone who could watch his back, imo. Maybe he hadn't experienced anything like that since Jango Fett. Maybe Rako was ticking all the right boxes; I see Cad as prizing loyalty. When Obi-Wan turned him over, you could see the pain and anger in expression -- he was truly hurt, and he promised to end his life with a blaster bolt between the eyes. I honestly think he despises him and that's that.
Tumblr media
Returning now to Boba, it is also canon that Boba was mentored by Cad Bane. Bane's story is also where he mentioned young Boba often reminded him of himself.
Tumblr media
In an unaired Clone Wars Arc, Boba Fett works together with Cad Bane on a job. During the animation created for the episodes that never aired, Bane is seen drinking heavily and seems to give two shits less about Boba or the job itself and is not taking things seriously.
Tumblr media
Boba begins to question his tactics, and does not like that he is willing to sacrifice innocent townsfolk just to get a bit of money. He stands up against him, and Embo, Bossk, and other hunters present decide to let him take his shot and do not interfere in their duel, even though most likely Bane is seen to be the one in charge or having authority.
Tumblr media
In the end they both fall, but Boba was (unfairly might I add) still wearing his helmet. You can tell that the plates on Bane's hat, however, are also armored. Still, it is not beskar. Bane is severely injured.
#2 betrayal: Bossk and Embo retract their weapons and let Bane go head-to-head with the boy. He even looks surprised in the video footage when they do this! It's the same face he gave Obi-Wan Kenobi!
Tumblr media
Boba comes out the winner. We see Bossk with Boba in The Empire Strikes back in the future, and in canon they are known to be seen often together. He especially looked after him in prison on Coruscant.
Tumblr media
Thus, we can assume, Bossk went off with Boba after Bane's defeat and joined forces, leaving him for dead. I assume, and in canon it is depicted that Embo is honor-coded. If what he thought Bane was doing was not honorable, he most likely left him for dead as well. What we DO see is Todo 360 being there. I am almost 100% certain it is because of his droid he survives. But, where did he take him for help? Hmmm.... HONDO!! (Kidding, kidding - another HC I have, but ANYWAY).
Tumblr media
In fact, Todo states he is Bane's "most trusted confidant" to Omega, and I believe this. He's a grumpy dick, but he never outright punishes Todo for anything, and he messes up quite frequently, but he is also a great help.
I have a headcanon that states his reasonings for keeping Todo, though this has no basis in canon:
"The little shit comes back after he is blown apart by a bomb Cad himself planted to go off in the Jedi Temple. Todo is loyal. He's there for him. He doesn't mind he's a grump. He provides conversation; stimulation in the otherwise solitary hours he spends in space. He becomes a comfort, someone to talk to, someone to fill the void that Jango left behind." Perhaps he also acts in the same capacity as a service animal.
Anyway, it is known what Bane thinks about clones. "Once you figure one out, de rest are easy." I don't think he liked clones, even if he tolerated and respected Boba until a certain point in time. He was different, he had "his father's blood pumping through his veins," and maybe Bane had trouble staring at that face - looking in those eyes -especially if there was more to him and Fett's relationship.
Imagine how he must have felt when he betrayed him? When he shot him? When he failed at repaying Jango's favor and failed at being Boba's mentor?
I personally do not believe Bane would have agreed to the Clone contract idea as far as his opinion. I think he would have told Fett he was crazy to have millions of himself running around out there, that there is only one of him that's the real deal. Let's add this to the fact he has to see their dead and dying faces everywhere to the point he's so numb he shoots them every chance he gets - no big deal. No big deal to have to kill one of your partner's lookalikes everyday for nearly the rest of your life, eh? Even after Jango himself is already dead.
Coming to The Bad Batch, it was pointed out by another user that when Omega is looking for a way off Bane's ship, we see some medallions/coins/ingots that have the symbol of the Mythosaur in a cabinet she is searching. That is Mandalorian. Who was Mandalorian? Jango. Boba by default. They are accompanied here by a journal. I think it could be Boba's journal, too. The boy most likely resided with him on his ship as he had the Justifier during the lost arc and they were traveling together.
That man is 100% a sentimental bastard.
Tumblr media
You could say he hated Boba. You could say he was his number one enemy, but deep down maybe he felt remorse. He had been drinking. Why? Maybe it was hard to be in Boba's company. Maybe he felt he could have prevented Jango's death. Maybe mentoring him was hard work, but in the end, Boba betrayed him after everything he had tried to do for him. And Bane liked the kid up until this point - said so himself in Bane's story.
In the lost bounty hunter arc, Cad is wearing the same outfit he is in The Bad Batch. Now he has a metal plate in his head. @allsystemsblue mentioned he talks himself up to Shand. Maybe he's trying to convince himself he's as good as he says he is. He headbutts her and it obviously throws him off. He shakes himself out, trying to regain his concentration. I personally headcanon he gets terrible headaches.
The plate is on the OUTSIDE, meaning it's protecting something underneath. I imagine he had a hole in his head and a bit of his skull was fractured. I say he wears the plate to reinforce a soft spot that makes him vulnerable.
Tumblr media
Even so, she kicks his ass. He's off his game. Maybe he's been drinking even more since his defeat and embarrassment at the hands of a kid. One he respected, one maybe he called family.
All the other hunters sided with Boba, left him high and dry, and he hasn't even been caring for or polishing his blasters; his moneymakers. They are RUSTY.
Tumblr media
He loses Omega, he loses his credits, and Fennec sabotages his ship. This man is pissed. He's at wit's end. For all we know, he sat down and cried afterward before he could figure a way off that damn planet, and the only one who was there for him was Todo.
Tumblr media
Years later, we see him confront Boba. He's a hardass. Nothing left of his personality in that show but a villain. It was like they made him extra mean on purpose.
He's still hung up on the past, he says it. He talks about Jango's blood being inside Boba, his "father." He leers at Boba. It is almost as if he takes a pause (again crediting @allsystemsblue for this observation), a moment to truly look at him. And let's not forget the hiss he gives him right before his "final lesson."
Tumblr media
"Look out for yourself, anything else is weakness."
GEE! Where did he learn that from, I wonder?! FROM BOBA HIMSELF MAYBE?! He was "weak" for Boba; he was his mentor; he tried his best to do right by his father and train him and he failed. He shot him, left him for dead, betrayed him along with all the other hunters present, and all that was left for him was to work alone. To grin and bear it. To take the jobs that came his way just to survive.
He had to of hit a downward spiral at some point in his life to come to this conclusion; something terrible must have happened, and I guarantee it's this.
Shat on all his life, all the way from being "hatched" in the Descent Ghetto on New Tayana on Duro, poor, coming up from the slums, working hard just to make ends meat.
Can't tell me he didn't have a wall up, and hell yes he was feeling low. What could make a man that mean besides betrayal and sentimentality for something he wishes perhaps he could have changed or prevented all together.
Now he takes the toughest jobs, the ones nobody wants. His reputation is fear and for good reason. He'll do anything for money, including killing innocents according to Boba. Where has his Code of Honor gone?
I'll tell you where.
No one ever respected Cad the way he tried to respect them. No one offered or afforded him the same luxury. Every time he was near to forming a decent partnership with someone, they turned right around and stabbed him in the back. We at least see it with Rako/Obi and Boba on screen. Bossk and Embo count too, for me. Maybe Jango was the only one he could trust. Him and Todo 360, which he was not around until long after Jango's death and in some form could have been a fractional replacement for companionship.
To throw in a few thoughts on Hondo, he knew them both well. Imagine if Hondo also kept secrets from Bane, whether intentional or not, or perhaps befriended him only to manipulate him for his own gain (which is definitely something that could happen). He speaks favorably of him in "Secrets of the Bounty Hunters," and calls him his friend, but he calls everyone that.
At one point they did work together as per the blurb on the back of a toy called the "Pirate Speeder bike," that features Cad Bane and a Starhawk speeder. If Hondo also betrayed him at some point, I can see it only adding fuel to the fire, IF Bane allowed him close to begin with. Considering his reputation, it's possible that no, he did not, but I also ship Cad Bane and Hondo Ohnaka as well as Jango Fett and Cad Bane. I won't go into it here, but I can see them being an insanely toxic, yet perfect match.
Tumblr media
To sum it up, yes, he is totally depressed. I feel like this is why. Can't change my mind.
---
P.S.: This is also a lesson in how to cite your sources and give credit where credit is due when thinking about headcanons and fandom fun. :) Ain't so hard, right?

Aegon II Targaryen x Reader
Summary: After the war's over, the house of Targaryen is at peace once again.
A/N: This story does not follow the events of the books or the series.
Aemond groaned at his father, how he wished for Aegon to be back so he could keep taking the blame and be the bad child.
With Aegon gone for the last year, Aemond was now on the chopping board.
After the war, Aegon flew away quicker than any of the losers. Aemond always knew his brother never wanted to rule, but this in his eye was an overreaction. No one expected Aegon to be back ever again.
Until one day.
News of Sunfyre landing spread like wild fire.
Alicent, Aemond and Helaena all rushed to see if the news were true.
They watched as the golden dragon left, leaving two people behind.
Everyone immediately noticed that the Aegon who dismounted this dragon was definitely not the one who left.
As if a changed man, Aegon stood in front of his family. His back straight, his hair kept, face smooth and on his arm, a lady.
If it wasn't for his recognizeable features and hair, his family wouldn't have recognized him.
Everyone's attention was now on the lady by his side.
She was breathtaking, her dress complimented her skin tone perfectly, her hair flew as the wind blew it and she had a smile on. Such a kind smile.
Everyone watched as she moved towards them.
"My Darling, this is my family, Mother, Sister and Brother." spoke Aegon but everyone seemed frozen into one place. They watched her bow slightly before once again standing straight. "My family, I would like for you to meet my wife, Y/N."
Silence. Complete and utter silence.
"Pleasure to meet you all. My name is Y/N Y/L/N. From the House of Y/L/N. I told Aegon that we should have sent word of our arrival." You looked at your husband, worried that no one spoke but all he did was smile at you.
You felt uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, did you say, wife?" his mother finally asked Aegon.
"Correct, we got married... five months ago. Lady Y/N took me off my feet. Made me into an honest man."
"It has been four months since our wedding, but the rest is correct."
Disbelief. You could feel it in the air but the proof was right in front of them.
Aegon, the second of his name, was standing right in front of them, someone they never expected to see and yet, here he was. With a lady by his side and if Alicent was honest with herself, she barely recognized her own son.
"Shall we?" asked Aegon as he guided her to the palace.
---
"So, this is your room?"
"It is exactly as I left it." he smiled, trying not to think too much of the bad memories.
You turned to him, raising a brow as you pointed at one of his... toys.
"Oh, that... that is..."
"Something you can never use on me. I don't know where it has been or even if it was washed." you nearly gagged.
"My Love, you don't have to be so prude. We have done our fair share of... experiments."
"Get new ones then." you said as you moved towards the window. "Are you sure this is the right thing to do?"
"I'm not sure. But what you said is true. I cannot hide from who I am. I cannot run to the other side of the world because I never want to rule. You changed me, My Love."
"I pride myself on that. You looked like a homeless person when I first met you, never imagined you would be a prince." Aegon laughed at the memory as you joined him on his bed, sitting next to him allowing his hands to take yours.
"I looked and smelled like a homeless person and yet, your kind soul helped me. I never wanted to marry anyone, and yet there I was merely months later, getting wed to you and I couldn't be happier."
"Why are you reminiscing on the past? We should be focusing on the future. This is the perfect place to start the new life we wanted."
"Oh, how I love you Y/N." his eyes were shining, he couldn't be happier he swore. "Do you love me?"
"I do, Targaryen or not, prince or homeless, my heart belongs to you."
You were the first person to show him love.
True love.
You found him, barely alive, drowning in his own vomit and yet, you helped him, housed him, nursed him and fell in love with him. Even when your father warned you, you stayed by his side. Not only that but you married him, Aegon is still shocked that your father allowed your marriage, but he was convinced he saw the Targaryen name not Aegon himself. But he couldn't care less.
"Why would you want to go back?" you asked exactly a month ago when Aegon brought up the topic of moving back to his old home. "I know I said you cannot run from who you are but I didn't mean for you to-"
"I want to go back and prove them all wrong. Prove it to them that I can be King and I can be a good one. I was afraid before but having you now, I know I can do it."
You nodded, knowing Aegon was stubborn as a mule.
"Then I shall follow my husband wherever he goes." you smiled as did he.
Aegon had you now.
You still looked around his room as women came to clean everything, and change the bedding. You found it interesting how his old room was so much like him.
He guided you around the palace, showing you everything, pointing out the things that have changed before he stood in front of his father.
The Iron throne is something you only heard in stories before. And the man sitting on it. Barely a man anymore. He didn't have much time, it was clear to you.
"Father, this is my wife Y/N." another introduction to another member of Aegon's family.
The man in front of you, clearly responsible for the pain his son went through and you could barely pretend to be kind. But you knew you had to. You felt your husband’s hand tighten around yours as you bowed to the kind.
Aegon had you now, and soon he will take the throne.

Could I please request Dream finally reuniting with his s/o after he escaped imprisonment, and him just being extra touchy with them.
To feel a lover's touch
WC: 1k Ao3
Relationship: Morpheus x reader
Notes: established relationship, reunions, PDA, some spice.
Dear anon, there you go. Reader is a deity in order to make the story possible, as a human would have died. Thanks and enjoy!
If you liked this story, i have written others.
Tumblr media
A century is a long time, even for an immortal. A deity you may be, but you haven’t been able to find Morpheus. The thought is a vicious thorn at your side, reminding you of your failure. More than a century you’ve searched for him, listened to rumors and whispers, but to no avail. Dream of the Endless seemed to have vanished, just like his other sibling, cruel tongues like to hiss.
You only find solace in your memories. Would you have done something different if you had known that all these years ago, this were your last meeting?
“My love, I shall return quickly,” Morpheus said, pressing a gentle kiss on your forehead. It was a quick journey into the waking world to apprehend the Corinthian. Nightmares and Dreams had gone rogue before, but the Corinthian was no minor nightmare and you feared that he might put up a fight.
“I know you will. Be careful.” You had teased him by pressing a kiss on his helmet, feeling the unique texture of it underneath your lips instead of smooth skin.
You didn’t know that it would be the last time you saw him.
You didn’t know that you would be forced to watch the Dreaming, his realm you’ve grown to cherish, crumble, while all the residents except Lucienne lost hope and left, despite your best arguments or pleas.
The Dreaming crumbled, as did your heart. Until that fateful day Morpheus returned.
      --------------------------------
You would never again take a moment with him for granted. You understood that he needed his tokens of power, but you were loath to leave him alone. You burned with the need to be near him, to be with him.
“My love, I need my tokens,” Morpheus had expressed in a rare moment of vulnerability, pressing your hands against his beating heart. You were standing in the throne room, surrounded by debris, both missing the former glory of your home. It may have been only your imagination, but his heartbeat seemed weak. And yet, it was the irrefutable proof that Morpheus was here, that he stood before you in the flesh. He was back.
“I know. Let me come with you,” you had begged, a lone tear running down your cheek. Morpheus wiped it away, and you gasped, your body overwhelmed by the simple touch. It had been so long.
You accompanied him to seek out Johanna Constantine. You were in your own personal hell after accepting that you couldn’t help him face Lucifer, that the Morningstar’s realm was off-limits to you. You helped find Rose Walker and solve the dilemma with the vortex.
You stood by his side and only felt the vines of fear and longing wither once you both looked at the restored Dreaming, free from any threat, with Morpheus giving you one of his precious smiles.
             --------------------------
The first time you had taken Morpheus’ hand after his return, he had shivered, goosebumps exploding all over his skin. You wanted to withdraw, anxious that you had done something wrong, but Morpheus only tightened his grip around your hand.
“108 years,” Morpheus growled, his eyes barely containing his repressed ire, his other hand snaking around your waist, drawing you closer. “I have been a captive for 108 years. I have not been touched for 108 years.”
You exhaled, meeting Morpheus’ burning gaze, and your heart skipped a beat. Touch-starved. Your own body suddenly felt hot. It had also been 108 years for you.
                  ----------------------------
After his imprisonment, Morpheus never misses a chance to touch you, and you love every moment.
When he finds you in the library, sitting in your favorite armchair and devouring your favorite tale, he drags his slender fingers down your neck, applying just the right amount of pressure, making your head tilt forward in bliss.
After a long day full of audiences with dreams and nightmares, guaranteeing that the Dreaming is functioning as it should, Morpheus extends his hand, giving you a challenging look as soft music begins to play. His hands holding your waist and your hand is all need as you waltz through the throne room. The sun is nothing compared to the warmth of his skin and the soft glow in his eyes.
Morpheus takes you on dates in the waking world, and you allow yourself to be silly and giddy, posing with him, and Morpheus, King of dreams and nightmares, indulges you. He presses his lips against your temple while you admire the simple beauty of a sunrise, your toes sinking into the white sand. He wraps his arms around your waist, his head resting on top of yours as you watch shooting stars, with Morpheus whispering the name of every dying star in your ear. While he raises an eyebrow, he lets you hang a lock with your names on one of the many bridges in Paris.
He gives kisses more freely: a gentle peck as he leaves you to follow Matthew into the waking world, a soft promise that he will return. Upon each return, Morpheus finds you and presses his lips against yours, devouring you in the most exquisite way possible, leaving your lips swollen and you gasping for more.
In the privacy of your chambers, he relishes every second you card your fingers through his silky hair, his head lying on your lap. You gently drag your nails over his scalp and Morpheus lets out a deep noise, half purr and half growl.
In your bed, Morpheus worships every inch of your body, his hands and lips caressing your skin, making your writhe underneath him as wave after wave of pleasure hit you.
“My lord, you’re awfully needy today,” you tease him after he had cornered you three times already in the library, caging you with his body against a bookshelf while his lips left a trail from your jaw over your neck towards the sweet spot between your neck and shoulder, making you almost mewl.
“Oh my love, I have only started,” Morpheus vows, his voice deliciously deep, and you lean into his touch, your hands roaming over his shoulders.
You would never get enough of this, enough of him.

Chapter Two
Tumblr media
Chapter One
The High Council of Asgard – decades before Loki's reign
"It is decided then?" Asked the Allfather his ally and good friend - King Laufey of Jotunheim, who sat across the golden table in the council room. The Frost Giant nodded, lifting his goblet of mead as a sign for his approval. "It is decided. As soon as I am back home, I am going to set everything into motion and send you my son as soon as possible." Odin lifted his goblet as well and gave the Jotun king a nod. "Here's to our alliance." "Here's to our alliance."
Tumblr media
"Skane, go get my son. I need to talk to him." Laufey told his advisor as soon as he walked through the big, heavy doors of the palace. "Yes, your majesty." Skane bowed to him and left his side immediately, in order to execute his king's order.
The prince wasn't very difficult to find these days. He'd be either in his chambers, the library or the training grounds. Today, Skane found the prince in the library, nose buried in a book. "My prince? Apologies for the disturbance, but your father is back and he wishes to see you immediately." With a slightly annoyed huff, the young prince closed his book. When his father called for him, it was wise to not let him wait. It was a lesson he had learned quite fast and early in his life. So, the heir to the throne followed his father's advisor without complaining. "Do you know what he wishes to talk about with me?" Skane shook his head. "Unfortunately not, my prince, no." The two men made the rest of the way to the throne room in silence. The heavy stone doors swung open with a thud, revealing King Laufey, who was seated upon his throne. "Father! You're back! I hope you had a pleasant return trip. How did the council meetings go?" The prince asked in a rather cheerful voice, knowing that the king likes to be welcomed back duly. "Just fine, son. We need to talk." Laufey said, standing up. "Let's go for a walk, shall we?" Loki took a small bow. "As you wish father."
King and prince went on a walk through the barren and bleak royal gardens then. Not a single flower was blooming in the beds. Well, Jotunheim had just gone through a very rough and cold winter. But spring was definitely approaching. The small buds on the trees were the proof. Soon, the cold realm would shine in all its magical glory. "What were you up to when I was away, son?" The prince shrugged his shoulders. "Oh, you know father... The usual. Reading, training, a bit of hunting..." Loki didn't dare to mention, that he plagued the one or other royal staff member with his pranks. He was a grown man, but sometimes he liked to act like a younger version of himself. Praying to the Norns his father wouldn't get whiff of it. "Sounds auspicious." Loki gave his father a nod, before asking again: "What is it you want to talk about?" Laufey took a breath. "The Allfather asked me for a favour..." His father's words caused Loki's expression to darken. He suddenly had a very bad feeling – and a guess. "Father, is this once again about me getting married? If so, I told you that I do not wish to get married now. I don't want to-" "It is not." Laufey interrupted his son's rant. "Even if I'd be more than just pleased, when you'd finally find a woman. It is long overdue. When I was your age, your mother was already pregnant with you. Our people are expecting this. They wish to see their future king finding his queen and provide an heir to the throne." The young prince rolled secretly his eyes, hearing this for the thousandth time. Oh how often he had this conversation with his father already. How often did they end up in a fight because of this… So, Loki tried to swallow his anger and pride. "I know, father, I know. I will get to it, I promise. I'm going to give the people what they want. Just not now." Laufey sighed, knowing that he had lost - like so often. What more could he do than telling his son over and over again?
"What is the favour the Allfather asked you to do then?" "Well… Strictly speaking, he is asking you." The raven-haired Jotun stopped in his tracks, quite surprised. "Me??" The king stopped in his movements as well, facing his son. "Yes. He needs a good warrior to train meticulously chosen Æsir. Someone who can turn them into soldiers within a month." Loki frowned. "What of prince Thor? He is a great warrior." "The crown prince is detained; currently stuck on Muspelheim for royal duties. If prince Thor's conversations with Surtur are not fruitful..." Loki quickly connected the dots. "Odin wants to be prepared." Laufey nodded. "Exactly." "But... Why me? There are great warriors on Asgard." The king placed a hand on his son's shoulder. "Because he wants the best."
That was how Loki, son of Laufey, crown prince of Jotunheim landed on Asgard a mere week later - ready and prepared to train a handful of amateurs. Men, who didn't even yield a weapon before. But the Allfather didn't ask Loki for nothing. If someone could handle this, it was him. Odin and Laufey were sure of it.
Tumblr media
"A royal… warrior academy?" You asked your father, who sat across from you on the dining table. "Yes, my dear. In case your brother's attempts of negotiation fail, we have to be prepared - and given the fact that we don't have enough warriors, we need to train more men." "Why only men, father? What if there are women who'd like to become a warriors as well?" You spoke in a demanding voice, crossing your arms. "Because only men become warriors. You, of all, should know that, daughter." "What of Sif? Isn't she a warrior, too?" "Sif is an exception. The only exception." You felt how the anger started to rise within you. "What if I wanted to become a warrior, instead of a princess?" Your father scoffed, already hating where this conversation was going. "I am not discussing this with you again, Y/N. We've talked about this. Several times. I won't allow my only daughter to spend her days on the training grounds. You have other duties to tend to! Find a husband for example!" You looked away, gritting your teeth. You hated it. Just because you were a woman and highly interested in learning how to fight properly, didn't mean you'd neglect your duties as a princess. And yes. Sometimes you rather wished to be warrior and not a princess. But who were you to choose? You had no other choice than to accept the place you were in - like your father so often told you. But what if... An idea suddenly crossed your mind. Hiding the smile on your face, you told your father what he wanted to hear. "I beg you pardon, father. You are right, of course."
"You are planning to do what?!" Estrid - your personal maid turned best friend asked with wide, frightened eyes. The young woman shook her head. "Y-Your highness, that is... foolish and risky a-and-" You grabbed the girl's shaking shoulders, causing her eyes to fixate on you. "I know, Estrid, I know. But I have to do it. It's probably the only chance I will ever get in my whole life. Father is never going to let me on the training grounds and I can't always sneak into the old armoury to train. It's my dream, Estrid." Your friend sighed, again shaking her head. "I know, Y/N, but it's dangerous." You nodded. "It is. That's why I need you to maintain my cover. Can you do that for me? Please?" She swallowed, thoughts running at lightning speed through her brain. "I know I ask a lot from you, but please. You are my best friend. I trust you." A moment of silence passed, before Estrid started to nod, giving in. "Alright. Alright... I'll do it." A relieved breath left your lips. "Oh thank the Norns!" You lunged forward then, hugging the blonde-haired woman. "Thank you so much." Estrid offered you a nervous smile, nodding. "Don't worry. We are going to make this." Again a nod. "Do you even know who is going to lead the training?" You swallowed hard. "Yes. Prince Loki of Jotunheim." Once again the maid's eyes widened. "Prince Loki of Jotunheim? I heard he is a very cold, harsh man... And his father is a very good friend of the king. Y/N, this is really risky. You can only hope that he won't look through your charade... If he does, you are in big trouble..." "He won't, Estrid. He won't." "I hope so..." The woman stated, taking a short break before continuing. "Have you ever met prince Loki?" "Personally? No. I have seen him once, but that was ages ago. Thor sees him way more often, given the fact that he's the future king. Plus, they are kind of friends, so..." A cheeky smile darted over Estrid's face at your words. "He may be a cold and brutal Frost Giant, but I also heard that he is a very handsome man and an even greater lover. Hopefully you won't get distracted on your mission." You scoffed, shaking your head appalled. "Certainly not, Estrid. No man or prince will be able to distract me. Don't you worry."
Little did you know, that you were going to eat your words just a few days later...
"How do I look?" You asked Estrid as you stood in front of the full-length mirror in your chambers, eying your good work. The young maid stood beside you, mouth formed to a perfect 'o'. "You look... amazing, your highness..." She was visibly and audibly stunned. You were surprised, too. You didn't know that you were able to turn your appearance into a man that easily. You wore a traditional Asgardian tunic - male tunic. One that hid the curves which indicated you were a woman. You had cut your own hair quite a bit, turning it into a man bun. All your female features were mostly gone. It was breath-taking. "Yes, I do. It's almost terrifying." "Now you need to just work on a deeper voice and a more manly walk." You turned to meet Estrid. "By the Norns, you're right! I-I mean..." You cleared your throat and tried to lower your voice as deep as possible. "By the Norns, you're right!" Estrid broke out in giggles. "Not good?" "No, no, no, I mean... It's good, Y/N! It's perfect. All you have to do is work on your walk, but the rest... If you can keep that up, no one's going to notice it." "Let's hope then I can keep it up." Estrid nodded. "And now let's go. Unless you'll be late." You grabbed your things and sneaked with your friend through the secret passageway only you, Thor, Estrid and the Warriors Three knew of, out of the palace. "You know what to do?" "I know what to do. Don't worry, my princess." With a last goodbye and a hug, you swung yourself onto your horse (which Estrid had kindly prepared for you earlier) and rode off. Your parents thought you went on a 'learning journey' through Asgard, getting to know different plants and animals... Advanced training, so to speak. Estrid had the task to maintain the cover for you.
The training camp was on the outskirts of the city. It was about an hour ride away from the palace. You had managed to sneak into your father's office and write a fake name on the list, so you'd be surely awaited. And indeed... Two guards were standing in front of the big wooden doors. The piece of land was fenced by high, thick walls. You took a deep breath, as you neared the doors. This was your dream, wasn't it? All you ever wished for. Why were you so nervous now? Your horse came to an halt in front of the guards and you dismounted the horse, before you took a small bow to the guards. "I'm here for the royal training, in order to serve the king and Asgard." You spoke in your deepest voice possibly, hoping that the guards would buy it. They did. "Name?" One of them asked, eyes fixated on a list. "Váli Ákison." The guard's eyes roamed over the list, before he nodded. "Open the door." The door got opened for you, causing you to swing back onto your horse and ride inside the camp. Your eyes widened at the sight before you. There we a lot of beautifully crafted tents, alongside a big fireplace. Men were bustling around everywhere. Some of them in tunics like you. Some of them already dressed in traditional Asgardian armour and a few of them, which you recognised as palace guards. Excitement spread through your whole body.
After you were handed your armour and assigned a tent, you retreated into said tent to change. You were ready. More than ready for this.

In the quiet hours of the night, amid the soft hum of the ship's engines, you found yourself lost in thought. Finding a place to lay low for a while where nobody seemed to know who any of you are, you stood by the viewport of the Mantis, gazing out at the twinkling stars that stretched endlessly before you.
It had been a long journey and the scars and achy bones that littered your body was proof of that. You sigh, rubbing the tiredness away from your eyes when a voice beside you makes you jump: “mind if I join you?”
You turned to Cal and shook your head. “Not at all. I could use the company.” Standing together in comfortable silence, the only sound is the faint whisper of the stars outside until Cal spoke up once more. “What’s on your mind?”
“Honestly? Not a lot. I’m just exhausted.” You admit, folding your arms over your chest as you give him a wry smile. “We’ve been doing a lot lately. It’s nice to just… chill. You know?”
“I don’t remember the last time I ever just relaxed.” Cal admits, a wave of realisation hitting him. “Perks of being hunted for exiting I guess.” He jokes with a small chuckle.
You rolled your eyes playfully and smiled lightly but Cal isn’t happy with your reaction. So quietly, he moved to the control panel, hit a few buttons and they stepped back. You didn’t question what he was doing until a soft melody began to play from the ship's speakers.
You turned to Cal, surprise flickering in your eyes. "Did you...?"
A smile adorned his features as he extended a hand, a silent invitation. "Shall we dance, madam?" he offered, a mock chivalry in his demeanor.
Your laughter bubbled, a fleeting moment of levity. You reciprocated with a playful curtsy. "Indeed, good Sir."
It was an unexpected invitation, but one that warmed your heart. Without hesitation, you took Cal's hand, feeling the familiar warmth of his touch. Together, you moved to the center of the ship, starting with some awkward swaying to the music's rhythm. “I can’t dance well.”
“That makes two of us,” Cal hums but soon, you both get the hang of it. Kind of.
He steps on your toes and yours on his, occasionally bumping into the walls and tables. “You’ve got two left feet, Cal!” You grin in amusement, earning a laugh in return.
For a moment, all worries and burdens were forgotten. Both of you had lost yourselves in the simple joy of music and movement. Cal's presence was a steady anchor, his hand firm yet gentle as he guided you through the steps.
“See? You’re a natural.” He compliments, giving you a quick twirl.
“I’m just trying to keep up.” You admit a little embarrassedly although the dance together was endearing.
With each spin, the weight of both of your responsibilities seemed to lift, replaced by a sense of joy and freedom. The music had changed tempo to a more upbeat rhythm, the two of you simply letting your hair down and dancing like nobody was watching.
Laughter rang out throughout the ship as you both reminisced about the past if a song reminded you of something that came on. You felt quite emotional because for once, there was peace. Cal was smiling, you were smiling, the others were sleeping peacefully. You truly felt happy.
Eventually, the music dwindled and so did both of your energies. As you sat together, catching your breath after the impromptu dance, you felt a sense of peace settle over you like a comforting blanket. Turning to Cal, a grateful smile tugs at the corners of your lips.
"Thanks, I really needed that," you admitted, voice soft with sincerity.
Cal returned the smile, his eyes warm with understanding. "Me too. It's nice to just be normal. Even if it's just by dancing."
Feeling a surge of affection, you leaned into Cal's side, accepting his silent invitation for a hug. His arm wrapped around your shoulders, offering comfort and support.
"It's a shame moments like this can't last forever," you whisper after a few moments, feeling a pang of sadness at the thought.
Cal nodded in solemn agreement, his gaze turning thoughtful. "I know. But, we all have each other. And sometimes, that's all that matters."
In that moment, as you sat together in the quiet embrace of the ship, surrounded by the gentle hum of the engines and the soft glow of the stars, you knew you had each other.

◇ 𝓐𝓵𝓵 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓛𝓲𝓽𝓽𝓵𝓮 𝓣𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓼 ◇
Tumblr media
TO: @hollythius-rising EVENT HOSTED BY: @solarisfortuneia
SYNOPSIS:
The most renowned love stories tend to be about either whirlwind romances or heartfelt tragedies. A love brewed by fighting against all odds provides a sense of fulfillment after all the drama, the angst, the conflicts, and the memories. It is a buildup to the climax wherein the readers live vicariously, to see the leads achieve happiness after a lifetime of misery. However, in reality, many pairs of soulmates find peace in the simplistic beauty that life can offer. They fight when absolutely necessary to maintain the harmony that safeguards the fragile glass known as happiness. Amidst the trivialities, the foundations of felicity can be forged little by little; and what once served as mere frivolity becomes the profound bond of unconditional loyalty—the foundation of all true loves.
ENTRY TYPE: Event Submission, F!Reader
WARNING(S): mentions of abuse, mentions of violence, mentions of problematic themes, implications of neurodivergence, blood, unstable mental state, juxtaposed writing style, ambiguous relationships, slight toxicity, mild angst (because I need to sprinkle some even if my focus is fluff), author is sorry for submitting late, etc...
CHARACTER(S):
Diluc Ragnvindr, Alhaitham, Childe/Tartaglia/Ajax
•☆••☆••☆•
DILUC RAGNVINDR is a man of intrigue filled with mysteries hidden in the darkest shadows of the night. In a way, he is someone who breathes in contradictions as much as he lives in resolute convictions. He approaches life with a headstrong mind and steadfast heart, yet his soul tends to navigate a treacherous world by means of putting on masks infused with his spirit to distribute justice. The body born with the red hair of dawn and the crimson eyes of dusk takes flight as the firebird across the twilight. He honors the name of Noctua, which had blessed him at the tender age of 10. Despite his straightforward nature, his true persona is as elusive as any respectable gentleman with skeletons locked in his closet—or buried in Dawn Winery, for this case.
However, as expected of any formidable vigilante, there is one trustworthy confidante behind them. They are the precious secret keeper, the one to uphold the contingencies that shall be in play if the vigilante falls amidst disaster. In some cases, they stand as the one person who will remember the masked heroes for all their entirety and become their proof of existence.
For Diluc, that is you.
He had just become the Cavalry Captain of Ordo Favonius when he met you. The sight of you, a girl no older than him, battered and covered in blood was bone-chilling. He swiftly commanded the Knights of Favonius to escort you safely to Mondstadt, and led the caravan while ensuring your comfort. A peaceful smile was on your delicate lips even as tears poured down your cheeks. He asked for the reason behind your contradicting expression, bewildered and alarmed as he floundered on how to help you.
"Barbatos heard my prayers." You told him, "I am free now."
Diluc figured that is when his infatuation started with you. The years that had passed as you settled down into the city, the years that had passed after his departure from Mondstadt due to the death of his father, and the years that had passed when he returned...
None of it made a difference to what he feels for you.
If anything, the flames grew stronger and more adamant to have you.
As always, Diluc's nights conclude with a visit to your abode. After his nightly patrols, you are always the solace that awaits him. Whenever he tried to stop his visits, you will go to Dawn Winery yourself to ensure he took care of himself. He never wants you to ever risk yourself by travelling in the dark just to check on him, so he found it easier to just visit you after his patrols.
Sorry to have kept you waiting. Diluc seems to say whenever he finds you asleep on your couch, waiting for him all night. He would carry you in his arms, tucking you back to your bed. As he turns to leave, your hand would tug on his sleeve. His crimson eyes would see you awake, just barely to give him a pleading gaze and a dazzling smile. A part of him wondered if you dreamed of him all those years he had been away, utterly consumed by scathing grief. It made him ponder for how much longer he will keep you waiting.
I am fine, just stay with me. You seem to reply as you watch him discard his coat to join you. The line between friends and lovers blur for those nights of synchronicity. He would hold you until dawn, wherein the morning light would take him back to Dawn Winery. You wake up to an empty bed, yet the warmth soothes you despite his absence. You never complained nor expected more than what he could provide. You never tried to put a label to what you have. The important point is that Diluc always came to you, and that was all that ever mattered.
Please never let me go. Diluc was used to fighting his battles alone, yet he could never resist the allure of returning to you the first night you patched him up after a rough confrontation against a hoard of enemies. It yielded further moments wherein you would either prepare him a warm bath, or just patch him up with a few words of admonishment to be more careful next time. Every touch made him adore you, and every word made him admire you.
I am always with you. That was all you could truly offer to ease his suffering. You knew that your dear knight of dawn is broken, and pieces of him have permanently gone missing. He cannot be fixed and you do not seek to do it. You merely hold him, as his body was covered in gauze with his head on your shoulders. You do not speak of the tears you do not see as it soaked your dress, nor do you speak of the nightmares he confided to you past gritted teeth. I love you. Who will say it first?
"Honestly," you sighed, "your injuries tonight make me think you're doing it on purpose at this point."
Diluc almost smirked, "I suppose the notion is not too far off."
You plastered the adhesive bandage a little too harshly onto his chest, making him wince. He caressed the abused skin before putting on the spare shirt you gave him while you took hold of his cloak. You retrieved your sewing kit to repair the slight tear on the fabric.
"Don't even joke about that!" You scowled sternly, "What are you, a child? If you wish to see me, you ask for an invitation. Better yet, try to start a conversation. It feels as if you can only talk to me as the Darknight Hero and never as Diluc Ragnvindr."
He frowned confusedly, "What do you mean? If anyone knows all sides of me, it's you."
You raised a brow at him in challenge, "Oh yeah? Then why do you avoid crossing my path during daytime? Why do you only dare approach me during nighttime, away from any prying eyes?"
His lips part to deny your allegations but promptly close it when you point your needle at him. There was a stern glint in your eyes, the familiar fire that rivalled his own Pyro Vision. It makes him look away guiltily, fiddling with his ponytail as he released his hair from the tie. Seeing that he was not arguing anymore, you went back to your task as you continued to speak.
"I'm not one of those girls vying for your attention or anything," you said calmly, "but I won't deny that it grates on my nerves as I see you changing directions whenever you spot me en route. Then you come to my home as if it was like any other night."
You cut the thread as you finished stitching, glancing back at Diluc.
"Are you ashamed of me or something?" You asked bluntly.
"No!" He protested vehemently, "It's the total opposite."
A slight blush engulfed his face at the unwitting confession, but he does not correct himself nor take it back. You stared with wide eyes of awe and surprise, taken aback yet mostly amused. Rather than delving into it, you decided to keep silent as your eyes evaluated Diluc under a new light. You chuckled goodheartedly as you stood up, gesturing for him to do the same. Once he did, you help him put his coat back on and may have lingered to touch his arms. You were utterly shameless, grinning as he did not even tense up. It shows his familiarity with your caresses, even as you blatantly traced his shoulders to dust off some unseen lint.
"You owe me a date tomorrow then, Master Diluc~!" You whispered onto his ear.
Your cheeky remark ends with a chaste peck on his cheek, making the man look at you with a flustered astonishment. You giggle at his adorable expression, turning away to clean up the clutter in your living room. There was a sensual sway to your hips as you walked away, a soothing hum reverberating from your lips. This sight of you, bathed under the moonlight, felt so domestic and surreal to Diluc. Once again, he finds himself pining for a dream that could be just a step away from reality. He only needs to muster the courage to take that step, and you could be his for as long as you would have him in return.
Diluc yearns for you. He yearns for a future with you.
At the same time, he wonders if he could protect you beyond the clandestine moments shared with you. As he grabs your hand and twirls you into his arms, he found his answer by brushing his lips against yours with an intense look on his eyes.
"You missed." He retorts.
That was your first kiss with Diluc Ragnvindr.
"The wind wisps guided us, but the flame sprites united us."
•☆••☆••☆•
ALHAITHAM is a man of logic and rationality defined by the reasonable standards of routine. As an advocate of truth and wisdom, he has a thirst for knowledge controlled only by the disciplinary restraint of abstinence. This balanced mindset has earned him the title of Scribe within Sumeru's Akademiya, a well-maintained equilibrium between ambition and humility. Alas, this chosen lifestyle is not without its drawbacks to accompany the merits. Though this silver-haired scholar would argue that these cons are not truly detrimental, his peers would beg to differ when they tend to suffer said disadvantages more often than not. After all, the most brilliant geniuses tend to have quirks; and for this scholar hailing from the Darshan of Haravatat, it is his grievously cold-hearted personality.
His harsh disposition, more often than not, can be attributed to his analytical behavior. While he is not unsympathetic, Alhaitham is the type to prioritize facts over sentimental attachments. Because of this, most of his peers find it hard to get along with him.
That was, of course, until he was paired with you.
You had been desperate to find a decent roommate in the dormitories of the Akademiya, while Alhaitham wants a roommate whom would just learn to respect his supposedly strict boundaries. You heard from a friend about it and sought his contacts on the message board. You passed his initial assessment of you, and everything else was history.
Alhaitham was extremely meticulous of his space because he wants to be efficient with his time. That means every single thing in his home needs to be set in its place so a routine would remain undisturbed. If something goes wrong, it irritates him and it puts his mental facilities to work for something he deems could have been avoided. Despite his effective work ethics, he can be quite lazy in that regard. He does not wish to waste time and effort for someone else's incompetence, which people tend to find off-putting. However, you see it differently. He has his preferences, and it just so happens to be more thorough than most—which you respect.
For a while, you took the time to observe Alhaitham closely. It befuddled and agitated him at first, since there are times your glare could be quite piercing. If you had a problem with him, you should just say it. There are even moments when he thought you were stalking him. Alas, it was actually because you were taking note of his boundaries and his miniscule habits to adapt to them without compromising your own comfort.
Once the first week had passed, Alhaitham noticed your efforts blossom.
To his pleasant surprise, it even benefited him.
"[Name]," he called indifferently, "have you seen—"
"—your book on ancient runes?" You finished, "You left it on the couch when you got the emergency summons from your thesis professor. It was inspection day and I didn't want it to get confiscated, so I put it on the third shelf on the right with a disguised journal cover."
His sharp eyes looked at your precise directions. Lo and behold, there was his book—untouched and even bookmarked on the last page he left. It was a rather neat bookmark too, laminated autumn leaves and ferns with the Sumerian letters that spell your name on the paper base.
"You want one?" You asked, "I could make a custom design for you. I saw your old bookmark when I was cleaning the trash, and it will help keep your pages neat by not having to fold them."
Alhaitham stares at you with a calculative detachment, yet you did not miss the flicker of warm gratitude that you knew surprised even himself. He nods wordlessly while politely handing your bookmark back.
After you both graduated, it took little time for him to achieve the job of Scribe. Meanwhile, you ended up getting a job in Zubayr Theater to pursue the arts as a playwright. Much to Alhaitham's surprise, it had been your plan all along. Your time spent learning in Haravatat was to provide a deeper nuance to your stories by making use of ancient languages and inputting traditional designs onto your craftsmanship. It was an amalgamation of wisdom that you proclaim the sages have neglected, an artform they prohibit due to ignorance. As he read one of your plays on a whim, he begins to see you in an appraising light. In fact, the appreciative delight he felt in your texts was demonstrated by how he never misses a single play written by you when it is performed on stage.
You could not pinpoint when things began to transition from platonic kinship to romantic entanglement between you two. All you can recall is that Alhaitham invited you to live with him again.
"Don't you already have a roommate? Kaveh, was it?" You asked curiously.
Alhaitham scoffs, "He tends to get on my nerves a bit. Having you there would teach him a thing or two about respecting my space, and minding his own business."
You snorted amusedly but accepted his offer. You knew better than to question Alhaitham. Although you wanted to joke about whether he still has room in his house, you knew it will fly over his head. It would only be a leeway to roast you about how he would not have offered if he did not have a room unoccupied to accommodate you.
Henceforth, that is how you got your own key to Alhaitham's house.
It must have been quite a shock to witness for Kaveh, how you and Alhaitham seamlessly move around each other. You always rise an hour before Alhaitham's scheduled awakening in the morning. You bathe and keep the bathroom clean, with enough hot water for him to use. Then, you cook breakfast and brew his coffee with a specific mug he uses in the morning to keep track of his caffeine intake. Straight black and no sugar, but you will add two teaspoons of cream to ensure it does not scratch his throat. By the time he gets dressed, you have his meal set on the table right where his seat has a good view on the window. It was not the landscape itself but the sunlight that hits just right for him to read any book he currently fancies while he sat to eat.
Alhaitham will always clean his own dishes, which will leave you to double-check your things before you both leave for your respective jobs together. Kaveh gapes when he actually sees the silver-haired man help carry your things while you put on your shoes.
"Kaveh," Alhaitham said nonchalantly, "we're both going to be home late. Don't wait up."
You smiled warmly, "There's still food left for you if you get hungry. Oh, and—"
With no hint of shame, your hands patted Alhaitham down. Your calloused fingers rummage his pockets and retrieve his keys, separating the ones that belonged to Kaveh which got dragged with his own. The most astonishing is how the man remains unfazed by your casual yet intimate touches, even leaning into it.
"—here are your keys again!" You laughed as you threw them at the blond, "Honestly, I should get us some kind of key hangers to prevent this from happening."
"Do you want to go now?" Alhaitham asked smoothly, "I have some time."
"I don't have the money for it yet!"
"Don't be ridiculous. Of course, I'm paying."
Kaveh could only stare incredulously as he held his keys. He watches you both depart, voices fading behind the door and into the distance.
Meanwhile, Alhaitham all too chivalrously takes your hand in his as you both strolled down the streets. You hummed a familiar tune that you have been working to integrate on your next play. He takes note of it, subtly turning a vial in his headphones to record your voice. You did not stop him, eyes wandering to window shop.
"How was your latest research?" You asked.
"Troublesome," Alhaitham sighs lightly, "the scholars involved in it give me a headache."
You cooed, raising your free hand to sweep his bangs and massage his temple mildly. You stopped to focus back on walking but now allowed your fingers to stroke the callouses on the hand you held. Soon, he drops you off at Zubayr Theater and releases you from his grasp. You held back a smile, cheeks blushing, when he kisses the back of your hand before tracing your palm with his fingertips as he lets you go. For a moment, his intense gaze shimmered in a darker turquoise and vibrant rustic orange—reminding you of both the rainforests and deserts of Sumeru.
"I'll stop by in the library with tea and snacks for you." You mention.
Alhaitham gives you a fond smile, a privilege only ever meant for you.
"I would appreciate that." He replied.
"Be the oasis to my desert, the prized flower in my secret garden."
•☆••☆••☆•
CHILDE is a man that goes by many names, each with a role to play like a performer on a stage. Amongst all these aliases, one of them comes with a literal mask belonging to a Fatui Harbinger—Tartaglia, the Eleventh. He is the youngest to ever rise to such a status, and it was with good reason. With the exception of the higher-ranked Harbingers, his skills in the battlefield are practically unparalleled. Frankly, the only thing sharper than his twin hydro blades is his ambition for more power and worthy opponents. That is likely why he fit right into the standards of the Fatui, enough to please even the cold-hearted Tsaritsa whom is implied to have a soft spot for her Harbingers despite her loveless soul. As the person that grew up with him, you felt proud of him yet also concerned over him.
After all, regardless of everything, he remains as Ajax to you.
In a matter of three days, that Ajax lost the light in his eyes but you carried that light in your heart. It seems that was enough to you, and that was also reason enough for him to still come home to you.
"What gave you strength to return?" You asked delicately, "Three months in the Abyss only to realize Teyvat only missed you for three days, it must have been a tumultuous affair. What enabled you to gain power to rise above it?"
Childe looks at you with a wistful smile, eyes remaining dull. However, the touch of his gloved hand in yours displayed an everlasting bond while the other held the fishing pole.
"My family," he replied, "and you..."
You smiled fondly, sagging in relief. Ajax still lives even if his light has dimmed.
The times he returned from missions—covered in blood that you knew were a mix of his own, and that of another poor soul that has ceased to exist—were all vivid in your memories. The first few nights, your hands trembled; yet you showed no fear in your eyes as you gazed into those lifeless blues. He was still Ajax, whom just grew up for the thrill of battles and an ambition for chaos. When he smiles at his siblings, you feel his genuine love envelop the room and that is how you knew the existence of Tartaglia can never truly overcome Ajax. The light of a flame may extinguish, but the warmth of its existence shall leave ashes and soot—until the day it ignites again.
Wrapped in bandages, Childe pulls you into his arms and lies down on your bed. You let him do as he pleased, aware that once the high from the bloodbath is over for the Tsaritsa's Tartaglia...all that would be left is the turmoil of your Ajax.
"If you are bloodstained," you swore, "then I will wash you all clean."
His embrace tightens, cradling the back of your head to ensure you will not look at him. You close your eyes and sigh, pressing your ear against his chest. The thumping of his heart races slightly as the heat of your skin passes to his own, soothing the scars and invigorating his veins.
"That would make you an accomplice." He said huskily, "I don't want to taint you."
You laughed blithely, wriggling from his grip to lift your head and boop his nose.
"Silly, Ajax~!" You crooned adoringly, "Even the purest snow needs to get dirty to melt into spring; and even the clearest waters hold their secrets beyond what the eyes can see."
Your eyes gained a ruthless gleam that made Childe's breath hitch. Your fingertips traced his torso, dabbling on the line between his skin and the gauzes. Your hand wraps around his throat, not tight to suffocate but enough to make him feel the weight of its existence. It was not calloused from a lifetime of battles, but from years of labor within Snezhnaya's endless winter. Nevertheless, it felt soft and delicate compared to his own.
"Should the day ever come," you promised solemnly, "that Tartaglia devours Ajax within you, I would kill you myself."
Childe's eyes widened. For a second, the lost spark in his eyes flickered.
"Tainting me or not," you smirked meaningfully, "it was never a choice for you to make, Ajax."
In a matter of circumstance, you joined the Fatui with a determined glint in your eyes and a menacing sharpness in your serene smile. You were not empty or unfeeling, for you still shone with an unforgiving light that dismantled even the Harbingers to their core. You did not hold the same prowess as Childe did when he started as a recruit, but your potential was overflowing when it came to everything else. It took a matter of months before the Harbingers, excluding perhaps the Jester and Capitano whom had been silent, began fighting in a passive-aggressive manner in an attempt to have you as their subordinate. The Tsaritsa had been indifferent, though she did seem to smile when you met her eyes fearlessly after your paths briefly crossed in the Zapolyarny Palace.
The other Harbingers must have taken quite a hit to their pride when you chose to bend one knee—bowing only in front of the Eleventh, right where they can see you.
"This humble soldier swears allegiance to Tartaglia, Eleventh of the Fatui Harbingers."
Childe gave a knowing smile, eyes flashing in appreciative endearment as he beholds your glorious form. He glances at his fellow Harbingers with a triumphant glare, brimming with possessive arrogance to which they all scowled. There was a palpable tension, a hint of envy to know that the lowest rank amongst them can encourage such devout loyalty. It was obvious there was something else to your relationship, but nobody could alas prove it.
"Rise, [Name]." He projects strongly, "This Harbinger acknowledges your oath."
Although you have joined his crusade in the Fatui, it did not mean you had to leave the place you have made for yourself in his family as his childhood friend. Since Childe made it clear he wishes to keep his real job a secret from the little ones, you also played your part in the secrecy. As far as his younger siblings are concerned, you are now an employee in Childe's toymaking company. In fact, you are the main designer of the toys. It is not too far from the truth since you end up being the one providing the toys to keep covering for Childe's lie. He knows engineering is one of your many talents, a reason why even Dottore and Sandrone had been very interested to have you as an assistant.
"[Name]," Teucer said when you joined their family for dinner, "when are you going to marry our brother?"
Childe ended up choking on his water, spilling it all over the table—much to his mother's chagrin. His father amusedly watches him struggle to regain his breath, patting his back in mocking consolation. You remain unfazed as you smiled at Teucer, whom sat on your other side. You chuckled as you grabbed the napkin, wiping away the crumbs and sauce on his youthful face. As Childe coughed into his elbow, he could not help but admire that maternal glow around you.
"When your brother asks, I suppose." You answered seriously.
Tonia squeals in delight while Anthon whistles, and Teucer celebrates by clapping his hands. All three glared at Childe expectantly while he stared at you, mouth agape and cheeks flushing in a rare image of flustered astonishment. His eyes seem to shake in unfathomable emotions, gulping dryly when you met his gaze with a challenging smile.
"It's getting late." His mother saves the day, "Ajax should escort [Name] back home."
His father smirked before Childe could agree, "Or [Name] could just stay the night like she always did when she and Ajax were younger. It's been a while since she has visited. It would be a shame for her to leave so soon."
Tonia nodded sagely, "I agree. Besides, maybe our dumb brother could finally pop the question if he gets used to sharing a room with his future wife again."
Just like that, the almighty Eleventh Harbinger got bullied by his own family.
In the solitude of his bedroom, you and Childe got dressed for bed with your backs turned to each other. Once done, you boldly embrace him from behind as you wrap your arms around his shoulders. You lean your head against his while he sat hunched over the bedside, elbows on his knees. He sighs with an exasperated smile, tilting his head to look back at you.
"You have got to stop teasing me like that." He said.
You grinned smugly, kissing him passionately on the lips.
Friend, comrade, lover—the label matters not.
The absolute truth is that you are bound to be together until your hearts stopped beating.
"Beyond the gods I defy, my end shall come in your hands."

A haunted house would not have been your first choice for a date, not in October and even less now, in March, when spring was finally shaking off the cold hands of winter. But your date had insisted that this temporary haunted house in the abandoned youth hostel was the talk of the town and that you definitely shouldn’t miss out on it, so you’d given in. In hindsight, you should have known this would turn into a disaster—a haunted house has a few too many dark corners and lethal weapons (albeit fake) to be a good date idea. But now it was too late and you were already standing in the middle of some dark hallway, the door you’d come in through locked with a silver chain to add to the experience. So, the only way out was to go on ahead, up the stairs and further into the building. For something that was only a temporary set up, they really went all out with decorating. It reminded you of an old mansion with the patterned wallpaper and the Persian rugs. Both were bloodstained and you thought you could hear the faint sound of a liquid trickling to the floor somewhere. Drip, drip, drip… Water? Blood? Or maybe it was just the tears of your date, who’d started clinging to you the second the door had been closed behind you. You’d thought you were a scaredy cat, but he was on a whole nother level. You almost had to carry him up the stairs and you already knew right then that you would not see him again after today. Not if you could help it.
Once you reached the top of the stairs, a shadow emerged from the dark, making you flinch and the guy at your side whimper.
"Welcome to our humble établissement," the figure greeted, tall and looming. He wore a black suit and had a white cloth over his arm. He looked like a butler, albeit one that was closer to the dead than to the living with his pale gray skin and inhumanly haggard cheeks. Makeup, your common sense told you, but you still felt shivers running down your spine. He gestured for you to walk on, not the trace of a smile on his lips. "Let me show you around."
He led the both of you through the building, narrating as he showed you the rooms of what seemed to be a very murderous hotel. All the while, your date was clinging to you so much, you felt his finger nails boring into your skin through the fabric of your clothes.
When you were shown to the kitchen, the cook looking at you with a bloodthirsty grin, chopping away on whatever the gooey mess on his cutting board was, your date was finally done with this. It took him one glance at that sharp knife dripping with blood to violently shake his head. "Nope, no, not happening," he pressed out and bolted, leaving you behind with the murderous cook and half dead butler. Completely flabbergasted, you just stared after him, not knowing how to respond. The other two seemed to be feeling the same; the cook actually stopped his chopping for a second, and the butler squeezed your shoulder reassuringly.
"What a prick," he mumbled under his breath. “Your boyfriend?”
"Oh, hell no.”
The butler chuckled and for a second there you couldn’t help feeling charmed, despite the gruesome makeup.
"So then, do you wish to continue the tour? Or shall I lead you out?"
“To be really frank, I'm not really a haunted house person,” you admitted, scrunching up your nose. “It’s a really cool place though, really well done, I’m just not very scare-proof, you know?”
"I can give you the unscary tour?"
“There’s something like that?”
“Just for today,” he said with a wink before holding out his arm for you to take. You felt silly when you did, but also a bit like a fancy Victorian lady. You liked that.
“So, to start, I’m Younghoon, the butler, and this is Kevin, our cook.”
“Sometimes chainsaw guy,” Kevin added and gave you a small wave with his knife, which looked less terrifying than it could have, his friendly smile taking off the edge.
As Younghoon led you through the rest of the hotel you didn’t feel frightened. Instead of a haunted house experience it felt more like a room tour through a very odd but interesting building. Younghoon made sure to give his colleagues a small warning before they could suddenly jump out or do whatever else they were supposed to do. So, rather than scaring you they just greeted you nicely. The grim reaper—Juyeon, as Younghoon introduced him—even looked a little cute when he pulled off his mask, pouting over not being allowed to play his role.
When you turned into another hallway, Younghoon assured you that you’d almost made it out and you couldn’t help but feel a little regretful about it. It was fun to get to know him and even though it wasn’t, it felt more like a first date than whatever you'd had with that other guy. Younghoon kept making sure you were okay and the way he talked and joked around with his colleagues helped to lighten the mood. They spoke so comfortably, it was clear that all of them must've been very close to each other. A part of you wished you could be part of their bubble, maybe become a gruesome gardener or something and join them.
“That’s the last one,” Younghoon pulled you out of your thoughts and gestured to a door that promptly opened. A guy with gory make up and curly hair poked his head out curiously.
“Haknyeon,” Younghoon explained, “our—what again? Brain-eating janitor?”
Haknyeon gave him a playful frown. “I’m clearly a zombie plumber,” he said, holding up a plunger for proof.
“Right,” Younghoon nodded. “That. And also our jukebox when we're on break."
"Jukebox?" You looked between the two in confusion and as if on que, Haknyeon began belting out a song you didn’t recognize, putting in so much passion you almost flinched. You heard someone from somewhere in the building sing along, while someone else yelled for him to shut up. It only made Haknyeon giggle.
"Anyway," Younghoon interrupted the impromptu concert, though it was clear he was more amused than annoyed, "with that we've reached the end of our little tour."
He pulled aside a dark green velvet curtain to reveal an inornate glass door that surely fit the original vibes of the building but felt out of place with the fancy decor.
“I hope you enjoyed your stay with us?” He asked as he gentlemanly opened the door for you.
The weather had been rather mild today, and yet the evening air streaming in from outside seemed impossibly cold. Maybe it was just the prospect of having to leave Younghoon and his warm smile behind.
When you didn't reply immediately he tilted his head questioningly.
“Very much," you quickly assured and you meant it. "Saved my night, to be honest."
"Really?" He looked happy.
"Really, really."
"That's good then."
You looked at each other for another second, as if there was something more to say, but neither of you did. With a heavy heart you stepped outside and made your way down the pavement. It was okay, you tried to tell yourself. It was okay to leave things behind like this. Not that there was anything to leave behind in the first place.
But there could be, a small voice in the back of your mind piped up.
You turned around again. "Actually—"
"Come back soon," someone suddenly greeted, making you shriek. You hadn't even noticed he was there, standing in the flower beds with a bloody ax in his hands. It seemed even the role of the gruesome gardener had been taken already.
You pressed your hand to your chest, in hopes of calming your heartbeat, slightly embarrassed about your obvious fright.
"Well, now they probably won't," Younghoon complained with a pout. "I told you not to scare them, Youngjae."
The gardener shrugged. "Come on, I only greeted them. I didn't even put on a face."
"It's fine," you waved it aside. "It's fine, I was just lost in thought and didn't notice him there."
"See? Not my fault."
"Anyway, I guess I'll really leave then." You chuckled awkwardly. There was no way you could ask him out after this. You just wanted to disappear.
Except, Younghoon didn't seem to want to let you go so easily. He took a few steps out the building, still keeping a polite distance.
"You wanted to say something."
You swallowed. "Yeah, just—" Your gaze flickered to Youngjae who was looking on with interest but quickly turned away when your eyes met, pretending not to listen at all. It seemed to work out fine for Younghoon because he didn't even pay him any attention at all. His gaze was fixed on you and you thought you saw something hopeful in his eyes.
"Just?" He asked carefully, taking another step in your direction.
"You really saved my night," you repeated your words from before.
"Mhm," he hummed, urging you to continue.
"So, I was wondering—maybe I can make it up to you, sometime? Invite you for a coffee or something? Only if you don't mind, of course—"
"I'd love that," Younghoon smiled so wide it made crinkles form in the corners of his eyes, probably leaving creases in his makeup. "My shift is over in a bit so—"
"Sure," you nodded, feeling your heart race with anticipation. "I'll wait."
Tumblr media
Younghoon didn't tax your patience for too long. Though, it took you a second to recognize him when he came to look for you in the parking lot. Somehow it hadn't occurred to you that obviously Younghoon wouldn't come out in full costume. Instead of his old fashioned suit he was wearing a beige hoodie, and his hair that was neatly parted before now fell loosely into his forehead. When he pushed it back you saw little traces of the gray makeup close to his hairline. He smiled, and if his smile was charming before in the halflight when he looked almost dead, it was completely dazzling now. You almost couldn't bear it, but you didn't want to look away.
"Hey," he raised his hand to a tiny wave as he made his way over to where you were sitting on the hood of your car. "Sorry for making you wait."
"No, don't worry," you quickly shook your head.
"Good," he smiled and there was a little moment again where you just looked at each other. You thought you felt a spark, but then Younghoon turned away, running his hand through his hair once more.
"So, I know we said coffee," he said, "but I haven't really had anything to eat since my shift started. Is dinner good with you?"
"Sure, let's make it a dinner date then." The words came out casually, without really thinking, but the moment you'd finished the sentence you felt your cheeks flush.
"Dinner date," Younghoon repeated with a grin. "I like that."
He held out his hand to help you get down. "Let's go? I know a place around here."
"Let's go." You let him steady you as you hopped down from the hood of your car. Younghoon didn't let go after that though. Instead he casually swung your intertwined hands between your bodies, his gaze focusing anywhere but you to avoid making eye contact. Maybe he was embarrassed. It was cute.
You didn't pull away as the two of you walked down the lot. His hand in yours felt warm and comfortable. Perhaps a haunted house was a good choice for a first date after all.

in flames [C.L.] | Chapter I
Welcome back! Here's the first official chapter, situated inbetween the ending of the 2023 season and the beginning of the 2024 season. This played out in my head and be prepared, this whole story will be a SLOW burn. Even slower than Ferraris pit stops.
Dropping a new chapter next week, would be nice to see lots of you again!
But until then, enjoy your happy holidays!
[also, please don't forget to read the Prologue first]
story: in flames driver: Charles Leclerc [C.L.] trope: #haterstolovers summary: Always working three times as hard as everyone else, Emma does not intend to blow her chance of driving among the best of the best in her very first season in Formula 1. Concentrating on first and foremost getting ahead of her brother, she does not even notice that there are some people even in her own team who think she does not deserve this spot and would rather see her fail. And one driver in particular seems to have a need of always reminding her of that.
────ʚ C H A P T E R I ɞ────
As soon as the news broke, I have been swarmed by paparazzi. Hell, I could not even go to the toilet in peace without someone asking me about my deal with Aston Martin. But after finishing my last race in Formula 2, I could officially call myself part of a new team.
Sadly, I still have no clue why they approached me with an offer and why they went through with signing me. Initially, I thought it was a joke, some PR stunt to rile up Red Bull, since they made it pretty clear they wanted me and Max as the power duo - after a second and eventually third year of proofing myself in Formula 2. However, a ten-minute phone call turned into an unofficial hour-long meeting, which morphed into a Zoom session involving my manager and a team of lawyers. Three separate five-hour sessions later, where expectations on both sides were thoroughly discussed, I found myself facing a stack of papers with small "x" marks beside every line I needed to sign.
And here I am, wearing a green polo, black trousers, decent makeup, and a smile plastered across my face. Fernando Alonso, one of the biggest names in the sport, nods in my direction, giving me a last look of encouragement or approval—I'm not sure. We walk through the double-winged doors and are instantly met with flashes of light. The noise is overwhelming; I have to restrain myself from covering my ears and squatting on the ground with pleas of "stop." People shout not only my name but also Fernando's, alongside questions we surely are not allowed to answer at the moment.
Navigating through the chaos, we take our places on the couch atop the stage, in front of what must be hundreds of people. I feel like prey, reporters wielding notepads, iPads, and phones as their weapons to summon words that cut through us like knives.
As we sit down, I immediately reach for the glass of water standing next to me to soothe my dry throat. Nausea washes over me as I glance around the room.
"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first pre-season interview of Aston Martin! We are delighted to have our two drivers, Fernando Alonso and Emma Verstappen, here for approximately one hour to answer all the questions you certainly have. But first, let’s address the elephant in the room, shall we?"
I was informed about this. We went over a few potential questions in countless meetings with my new PR manager. Nonetheless, I can't help but feel like this is a test I didn't prepare for at all.
"Emma, let’s start with you. This is your first year in Formula 1, and there is a big question on everyone's minds: Why Aston Martin? I mean, your brother – Max Verstappen, for everyone who has been living under a rock for the past couple of years -…" Laughter fills the room. I chuckle myself, but I would rather cry. "He has been with Red Bull since 2016. Everyone thought if there's a chance of you getting into Formula 1, it would be alongside your brother in a Red Bull car. What happened?"
I take a deep breath, swallow, pick up the microphone in my lap, and try not to look straight into the ceiling lights.
"Firstly, thank you all for being here. I do realize you’re here for Fernando and not for me—at least that’s what I’ve been trying to tell myself for the last week so I wouldn’t freak out." More laughter in the crowd. I relax a little. "And thank you for the question. I guess a lot of that was gut feeling. To be honest, I am really not sure why Aston Martin initially talked to me about my chances in Formula 1 since my last driver championship was in Formula 3 two years ago. I just finished second in Formula 2, and I've only been there for a year, so that was quite unusual. But when I talked to the guys and they introduced who was supposed to be my future race engineer and some people from the pit crew, I saw in them what I saw in myself: a purpose. They all spoke so passionately and ambitiously about the next season, and suddenly I felt like I found a place where I belonged. At least that's what my PR told me to say. Actually, I am here because green is my favorite color, and I have the biggest crush on Fernando."
The crowd goes crazy. Everyone claps and cheers. Someone screams, "We all do!" I glance at Fernando, and he smiles at me. Then he picks up his microphone: "We all hope you realize that was a joke. You could be my daughter, Emma. Also, Linda is still the love of my life."
"Damn, if there will ever be a chance of dating Fernando Alonso, Emma, you will have to line yourself up in the back. But, thank you for the close insight. We are pretty proud to have you wearing our colors." The host looks away from us and turns to the crowd. "So, let’s do what we and all of you are here for. Time for some questions."
A few hands instantly shoot into the air. My palms are sweating, and I look around nervously, praying that some people here have the decency not to focus too much on my transfer. But apparently, there is no god in the big blue hanging above us.
"Fernando, how do you feel with a rookie as a teammate? A female one?"
Tiny voices in my head agree with him, and probably many reporters in the room too. I shift uncomfortably on my seat. This press conference is not going in the direction we anticipated. Fernando seems to think about the question, but even though I have not known him for very long, I can feel how he tries to behave and stay calm.
"Age or gender have nothing to do with talent. Or capability, for that matter." His eyes revert to me. A smile. Then he continues: "We’re a team, and success comes from working together. I’m pretty sure an old man like me will learn a lot, but we always have to remember that this is a process. Growing as a team will not happen overnight."
Fernando's calmness washes over me and captures me. He has been doing all of this for so long—PR training, talking to reporters, reading about himself in newspapers and on tabloids. I feel pretty lost, like I am on an island with only a book about survival strategies, but it is not written in any language I can speak.
"What did you think about the statement Charles Leclerc made last week, about you being in this sport solely because of your brother? Or maybe, a bold follow-up question: Is your place in Formula 1 rather about connections than skill?"
I laugh, and the room immediately goes silent. "Sorry, what was your name?" I ask.
"Uhm…Kevin?"
"Well, Kevin, that’s a really good question, and I have to say there hasn’t been a single day where I haven’t asked myself the exact same thing." I pause and look around. Shock is plastered all over the reporters' faces, probably because they did not expect this kind of answer. "The thing is, my whole life I was second. Second being born, second to being seen, second to being supported. Second to start karting after Max had already a great start. The only time I did something Max didn’t do before me was when I joined a Formula 2 team—and that was only because he went straight from Formula 3 to Formula 1."
I remember the call I got when my place at DAMS was secured. I was excited beyond words, screamed, cried, laughed, all at the same time. I thought, finally, I have something to be proud of, something I achieved by myself. Something for myself. But when I went to tell my family, the only comment I got from Dad was: "Well, maybe you’re not as talented to just go straight to Formula 1. But it’s a nice chance, for a girl." Max does not know about that conversation, and I try to keep it that way. Otherwise, he would probably punch Dad in the face, a couple of times.
"Of course, it is hard to believe in yourself when there are so many people who doubt you, but that’s the beautiful thing about Aston Martin and the seat they offered me: They see something in me no one else sees, and they believe that I can contribute something to this team. These are guys who have been in motorsport way longer than I am, so I think it would be pretty fair to say I trust their judgment more than someone who tries to make a living of writing stories about strangers, I guess." A few people laugh, a few clap. I try not to be rude, but it is true. People are so quick to judge situations they are not in, and I am not here for that.
"Also, I cannot influence what any other driver on the grid has to say about me. As I said, I am here because some people see potential in me being a F1 driver and I will not let them regret this decision, so...I guess Charles, and any other driver for that matter, can have opinions about me all they want, but I am going to race these guys, whether they like it or not. This is a chance and I don't intend to blow it."
"Well, that’s a clear statement, and I’m right with you on that. Hopefully, pardon my French, you will kick some ass out there this season. The men need it, believe me." There is a wink in his tone. The room erupts in applause and camera flashes. I smile and nod, a small "thank you" gesture to the reporter.
"Thanks, Kevin. I will try my best not to disappoint you."
The press conference concludes about thirty minutes later; we say our quick goodbyes and leave to go back to the headquarters.
"What a day, huh?" Fernando remarks as we come to a halt in front of our cars. I sigh, shake my head, and gaze down at the ground.
"This was a lot more challenging than I thought. They're like... like..." I struggle to find the right word to capture the feeling. Fernando nudges me, a gesture of understanding.
“I know what you mean, but that’s their job. If they don’t bring out the worst in us, they would suck at it. But you handled it quite well, so don’t worry about it.” I glance at him. When I grow up, I want to be as calm as this man—like a huge cliff at sea, never giving in to whatever storm is coming.
“I haven’t seen what statement Charles made, did you?” I try not to sound too curious.
“Don’t dwell on it. I’m sure a lot of people will comment on you joining Aston Martin, some more, some less. But the most important thing is to clear your mind. We don’t need distractions – we only need some confidence. I can feel it; this will be our year.”
"If you say so."
And with that, Fernando waves one more time, gets into his car, and then drives off with a loud roar of the engine.
I look around, absorbing the peace and how silence envelops me.
Guess it’s time to start believing in myself and kick some ass.

Kinari Azekawa SR Story: Prüss’s Room (Pt. 1)
Tumblr media
Raito: Now then…… We’ve finished bringing in all of Kunugi’s furniture, but we’re still missing some of Kinari’s things.
Kinari: Just my battery charger is sufficient and will not hinder my everyday life.
Raito: But, even just one chair would be nice, no? Alright, let’s check online.
Kinari: …… Understood.
Raito: “Stylish chairs.”…… How’s this one? For some reason, it seems to be hiding a mysterious power.
Kinari: …… A chair with seven different sparkly neon colors……
Kuguri: Goodness…… I’m amazed by your lack of taste. Plüss, you’re in trouble too.
Raito: Kuguri, when did you get here?
Kuguri: I will not stand by and allow my room to fill with tasteless items. I shall join you in choosing furniture for Prüss.
Kinari: Understood. Thank you for providing your input.
Raito: Okay, let’s all pick together. This is our shared room, after all.
Kuguri: Modern styles suit Kinari perfectly. For example…… “Modern refined chairs”…… Here, I got a hit for a chair with legs that can extend into a super high chair.
From the start the words you were looking up were tasteless.
Kinari: This type of chair could get so tall that my head will break through the ceiling during my startup procedures.
Raito: Hmm~, I see……
Kuguri: Let’s try changing the search terms for now.
Raito: Okay…… “Modern suitable chair,” …… How is that?
Kuguri: Show me. A simple white chair…… Don’t you think this one suits our fair-skinned Prüss?
Raito: The color isn’t bad, but isn’t this too simple? I at least want an accent color.
Kuguri: …… You are not listening. Prüss, what do you want? Any keywords you can think of are good.
Kinari: …… “Wrapped up..” I imagined the shape of a rest capsule that I have used in the past.
Kuguri: Is that really a chair?
Raito: Isn’t that fine? Let’s try looking. “Chair enclosed modern”.
Kuguri: I don’t think we’ll find anything good with those words……
Raito & Kuguri: ……Ah.
all my translations are not proof-read, so please let me know if there are any pieces that should be adjusted. thanks for reading! all my translations are not proof-read, so please let me know if there are any pieces that should be adjusted. thanks for reading!

Gone Missing - Chapter 1
Okay so this took me way too long to write! I decided to try and write it in first person but also still keep it neutral enough that a reader could place themselves in the story? I may scrap this and go back to 2nd or 3rd person we shall see! Sooo let me know what you think! Only other warning I have is I didn't proof read this and quickly put it together.
But uhh essentially you're Adam's sibling and he's been missing for three days too many so you do what any sensable human would do and go to the police station to report him missing. Dectective Hoffman is on the case ;3
Tumblr media
It had been three days. Three days wondering where in the world my brother, Adam had gotten up to. I sighed, checking my phone for what felt like the hundredth time today. Still no callback. Maybe Adam just got busy, I thought trying to reassure myself that he was fine. The last time we spoke he told me about some ex cop that was paying him pretty good money, so maybe he was just busy with that?
“I can’t do this anymore!” I exclaimed, standing up to grab my coat.
I quickly locked the door to my apartment and headed out. I needed to stay calm, but my mind raced with too many thoughts to grab hold of anything. As I walked and held my phone close; Adam had exactly 20 minutes to call me before I reported him as a missing person. I knew he would be angry, but I couldn’t lose him. He was the only family I had left.
The autumn air was crisp as I started to walk along the street. Cars and people passed by continuing on their way. Their world continued to move forward while it felt like mine froze. I could feel a lump growing in my throat as I pushed the door open to enter the Metropolitan Police Department.
The front was unremarkable dead. A small lobby with a few chairs and a main desk with an officer to greet you. Taking a deep breath, I approached the desk mentally preparing to deal with whatever bullshit these guys could throw at me. As long as they help me find him that’s all that matters.
“Name and case number?” the voice asked.
“Uhh… I don’t have one?” I answered, earning a sigh and annoyed glance from the man behind the desk.
Normally this man wouldn’t have bothered me so much. I would just sass him back and yet I couldn’t bring myself to do that.
“You don’t have a name?” the cop asked a little louder, gaining some attention from people behind him.
“I have a name, but I don’t have a case number.” I responded, feeling my chest tighten. “I… need to file a missing persons case.”
“Sweetie people go missing every day in this town, you sure they didn’t just dump you?”
Anger, confusion, sadness. Each one leaving as quickly as it came. I couldn’t understand how walking into a police station was such a problem. The man behind the desk examined me, seeming to want to say something else before another man in a suit walked up. The two officers exchanged words briefly before the man in the suit walked over. I clenched my jaw, I knew I shouldn’t have come here. I would have better luck finding Adam myself than trusting these people.
“Detective Hoffman,” the man called, extending his rather large hand out to me.
“_________ Stanheight,” I answered, taking his hand into my own.
He had a strong, but gentle handshake as he gestured to the chairs in the lobby. If this had been a regular day, I would have been having to contain my emotions as I looked over the detective. He had the brightest blue eyes and a nice smile. He wasn’t ripped like other cops, but he definitely seemed to be in shape. I just hoped he could help me find Adam.
“I couldn’t help but overhear,” Detective Hoffman said, gesturing towards the front desk. “What makes you think someone is missing?”
“I don’t think anyone is missing. I know my brother Adam is missing. We talk everyday and now I can’t get in touch with him,” I huffed, my annoyance starting to grow as the detective nodded, pulling a notebook out of his pocket.
“Adam huh? How long has it been since you spoke? Could he just not have his phone?” he asked, earning a glare from me.
“It’s been three days. Look, I know he’s missing. We talk everyday. And one of your officers hired him to follow some doctor--” I snapped before he cut me off.
“One of our officers?”
“Yes! Some old guy-- Bob Tapp? I think?” I exclaimed, mentally kicking myself for not getting the name when Adam had originally told me.
“Detective Tapp? But he’s dea--” the original guy from the desk started to say before Hoffman cut him off.
“All the more reason to take their information,” he said sharply.
“D-dead?” I stammered, my eyes widening. “No, you have to be mistaken, Adam just got hired by this guy.”
Everything around me felt like it was spinning. If the guy that hired Adam was dead-- no Adam couldn’t be dead. My thoughts grew louder and I couldn’t focus. Time seemed to freeze. I could feel tears filling my eyes before I felt a strong, but firm touch on my shoulder bringing me back to reality for a moment.
“Hey, I need you to calm down. We will do everything we can to find your brother,” Hoffman said firmly.
“He can’t die,” I whispered, trying desperately to stop the flood gates trying to open. “He’s… the only family I have left.”Hoffman’s face softened briefly and he nodded like he understood what I felt. I needed to calm down. I needed to give him the information. But I also desperately needed to go out and start my own search. It felt like the wind had been knocked from beneath my sails and yet all I could do was focus on one singular thought: Adam could be in serious danger.

No Sunshine at Rainy Day Entertainment 🌦️ (Part 1/2)
Ivan joins Owen, Nate and the rest of the team for the week, let toxic workplace politics ensue! Let's see where everyone's least favourite ex-boyfriend and golden child makes Monday the worst day of the week 😬
Previous Story Post/ Next Story Post
Transcript under the cut:
[MARCO] Hey Ivan! Thrilled to have you with us for the week!
[IVAN] Hi Marco! Happy to join you all.
[IVAN] This has been a really fun project to freelance on, so l'm looking forward to seeing it come to life.
[MARCO] That's great to hear!
[MARCO] I'm about to head into a meeting with Dirk, Rob and Chris but Nate and Owen are happy to show you to your workstation.
[IVAN] Sounds good, thank you Marco.
[OWEN] Well, well, well! Long-time, no see Mr. Conley!
[IVAN] Hey man, happy Monday!
[OWEN] Glad to have you in office. I'm excited for you to see your awesome work thus far come to life before the next phase!
[IVAN] Yeah, I’m looking forward to it!
[NATE] My guy Ivan! Welcome to the city! Did you find a coffee spot to suit your tastes?
[VAN] Hey Nate! Yeah, I did, it was excellent.
[OWEN] Cool! Where did you get coffee from?
[IVAN] Spiced Cafe. Caroline suggested it, and she told me her friends own it.
[NATE] Oh good! Caroline knows all the good spots.
[IVAN] *chuckles* She basically gave me an entire itinerary on places to hit in San Myshuno.
[OWEN] *raises eyebrow* How very Caroline of her…
[IVAN] *blushes* She was very happy to share her wealth of knowledge, a-and I appreciate that, big time.
[OWEN] Oh, she's the best when it comes to that!
[NATE] A whole itinerary, eh? Real nice of her!
[IVAN] *clears throat* So, gentlemen. What sort of office atmosphere should I be expecting? I've only really worked with you two and Marco virtually.
[NATE] We have a great team! You'll meet Rob shortly. He's a super class-act guy.
[OWEN] And I would imagine Dirk and Hope will want to meet you. Akira is on vacation this week, Olivia will be in this afternoon...
[OWEN] And then there's Chris Williams, unfortunately. Wait, you probably have some sort of history, huh? Or your parents?
[IVAN] *clicks tongue* Yeah. I don't know how much Ben has told you, but his family likes to cut corners in order to make money.
They're easily threatened by anyone who will come against them.
[NATE] We know they royally screwed over your family for calling out their shit ethics.
[VAN] So Ben has told you everything, good. Beyond that, Chris has always had it out for me and I don't know why.
At first, it was just childish jabs that I ignored, but that turned into him trying to accuse me of plagiarism while we were at Foxbury. Luckily I had enough proof to get him in deep shit, but due to his family's influence all he got was a slap on the wrist.
[NATE] Shit dude! Just to spite you?
[IVAN] Yeah. I've never understood it
[OWEN] As if I couldn't loathe him more than I do! I'm sorry that happened to you man.
[NATE] You'll notice quickly that Owen really doesn't like Chris!
[OWEN] I can't stand people who suck, can you blame me? And don't get me started on what he did to my sister...
[IVAN] So how does he have a job still despite so many people finding him difficult?
[NATE] His dad is one of our shareholders!
[IVAN] Shit, for real?
[OWEN] We have to be really careful with what we say around Chris, and I mean anything.
[NATE] Let's get Ivan to his desk before he runs away screaming, shall we?
[IVAN] *chuckles*
[OWEN] Here you go, man! Nate's right behind you, and Rob is to your right, and I'm behind Rob.
[IVAN] So you three will shield me from Chris? I'm kidding, thanks man.
[OWEN] No kidding, huh? I think I hear Rob leaving a meeting...
*Door to office swings open*

A thousands wishes: The betrothal.
Tumblr media
Jacaerys valaryon x Female reader.
Notes: The reader is shorter then him. Her family lives across the seas in a kingdom which they rule, making her a princess. This is not my best work at all and I honestly hate it but I’m putting it out.
This is like a enemies to lovers…But it might in in angst and no lovers at all. You have been warned.
Story warnings: Haven’t really proof read, mistakes and bad grammar, fighting, angst.
Tumblr media
Marriage wasn’t something you wanted, nor was it is something you stood against. When someone is to find the person they wish to marry whether it be for love or a agreed arrangement. All your life you are being told about the happy and miserable stories from marriage. It was something you almost feared at thought of being missable.
So this isn’t what you wished for.
Ever since you were a little girl you had your freedom to do as you liked, being the middle child you were able to be not as cared for or watched over as your siblings. In your growing up you took pleasure in the ways of the sword or the bow since it was your favorite, or never being able to put down a book when it was intoxicating.
But as of three months ago you found yourself being handed off to a man you had never met, in a kingdom you have never stepped foot in. Oh, how the gods were laughing at you. It was a marriage to combine the families, the family your mother knew when was a girl but you had no ties with them. And your father who thought it was a fair trade for such a man in high title to marry you even if he was a bit hesitant at first.
Two Royal blood lines. And who are they to refuse a good proposal?
The letter crumbled up into your hand as anger flooded within you. It was the letter the other queen had sent to your mother regarding your hand in marriage to her son. “You truly do not wish for me to marry him mother?” It was a plead of hoping it was a joke, a sick cruel joke.
“I have already sent my reply, you will be married to him soon enough. They have promise time for you to get to know him so that love might grow between you.” Her words spoken so light and lovingly, she must be happy to send you away to someone else.
“Why do you hate me so mother?” Standing upon your feet you could see the expression in her face flitter. “Why do you wish to send me away? I do not want to be married yet- Shouldn’t I get a say in who marry, why must you be so cruel I’m taking that away from me.” Your eyes began to over flow with tears of anger but your voice become soft and whispery.
“My dear girl,” She stood up from her taken set and placed a hand on your cheek as she stood close. “I do not wish to get rid of you. You are my daughter and one of the most important things in my life and that is why I must do this. I have spent years watching you be alone and closed off. I am hoping you find that within him and maybe then you do not have to be alone anymore.” Drying the tears from your eyes with her numb she brings your head down and gives you a soft kiss.
“Give this a try and it may surprise you but if it doesn’t work in the end we shall call it off.” The smile she gave you was sincere and one of a true loving mother.
One you have missed.
“I shall try.”
֍ Wishes ֍
Remembering those words in your head as you walked into a room of strangers gathered to watch you and your family so closely. Holding onto your brothers small hand to make sure he doesn’t run away of cry though, it was you who needed to be reminded to stay.
Immediately you noticed a woman with long white hair smile as she sees the lot of you and then at your mother. She must be Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, the ruler of the seven kingdoms and to the iron throne but also your mothers old friend.
Soon they took each other in one another’s arms and the happiness they shared was easy enough to make you smile yourself.
“Welcome to Westeros, it is good to see you again my friend.” The woman glanced over to you and your siblings and soon her eyes landing on you and her smile grew.
“Is this Princess Y/n?” Your mother turned and gave her a nodded, “My second eldest daughter.” Your siblings moved out of the way as she stepped closer and towards you, she was beautiful.
“You are as beautiful as your mother claimed you would be, if not more.” She took your hands for a quick moment and for some reason you where actually relaxed at her presents presents. Her calling you beautiful made you feel pretty and believe her for a bit because she looked like a story book character by her looks. One of beauty.
“I wish you to meet my son, Jacaerys Valaryon. My heir.” She stepped out of the way and you looked behind her and saw a boy with brown hair step away from his siblings and over to you.
He was looking so soft at you that you felt like a silk blanket. “Hello, Princess it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Taken ahold of your hand he raised it to his mouth and gave it a soft kiss.
He was handsome and he was sweet at the touch. You almost fell for it.
“And I reciprocate that feeling my prince. May we learn about each other in the time we share.” Bowing your head with a smile, it was fake and you felt like pulling out your hair and running away from this place.
But you had to stay for your family and to at least give it a try. So after everyone was introduce you slipped away from him and over to your little brother and used him as a excuse to get away.
Now the halls have grown cold and the breeze from the night caused your skin to feel a bit cold. You wondered where the halls will lead you and if you could somehow find a safe haven in this place just to be alone.
Once you came to a darker hallway, it has a small corner it had a stone bench and a half wall to block it off. This was as good as any place to take a breather.
Jace seemed sweet when he glanced at you or the times the confusion on his face when you would walk away before he could get close to you. You almost felt bad for hating him so much, just the thought of being around him made something in your mind twist.
As you sat on the cold stone with your legs crossed and the knife you love being held in your hands. You ran you finger softly against the blade carefully not to cut yourself as you were lost in thought.
If only you had done something different you maybe wouldn’t be in this situation now: not being betrothed or forced to like someone in the eyes of others. Truly what a pity you feel for yourself, but maybe you were lucky to have such a nice man to marry but that’s not something you can justify.
“I do wish you haven’t be waiting to kill someone with that, princess.” He was there. The one person you wish to not see above all else.
“No one has come by.” Joking you look up to him with a bit of sass on your voice and he smiles and chuckles.
“As I am sure you could, I do believe that isn’t the reason you are awake at such a hour.” He walks closer and leans against the all next to you.
“I am thinking.”
“Care to share?” He was so…Charming by the way he spoke to you. But that only made you more annoyed. Wondering what he was truly finding and how many woman he has tricked.
“I do not think you wish to know.” You fully believed that you might hurt his feelings if you let everything out.
“I think it best to get to know how my wife will think-” he stop himself at the sight of you.
Lifting yourself up quickly and stood up with a look of anger and disgusted. You shielded your blade and walked over to him quickly and pointed a finger at his chest.
He was confused at your outburst and hatred towards him and only him, had he already done something to make you loathe him when he tried his best?
“I am not your wife, we are nearly betrothed and even then I am still not your wife until the wedding.”
“Have I done something to offend you so deeply? I apologize for calling you wife but this is more then just now.” You laugh at his words.
“I can see it in your eyes that you don’t truly mean anything, you might fool others but I will not be so easily tricked.” His jaw tighten and leaned up straight and looked down at you.
“You think of me as low as to do that? I am only trying to treat you well and get to know you, which you have avoided all day at the cost or even a word. How can you know my intentions if you do not wish hear my words.” He fired back with just as much as you did but that only sparked more of the flame.
“I did not wish to be here with you, non of it was my own doing. Maybe try being more quiet and standing far away from me when not needed,” Pushing him back a bit with the fingers against his chest.
“I will never ever love you.”
He did not know why those words hurt him such when he barely knew you. He also wished to be in a marriage for love and when he was a little boy he promised to make his wife feel loved and devote himself to her. A true gentleman would but how can he now as he watched her walk away with no interest in letting him be in her life.
He wished for chance.
She wished to be set free.
