[ELIZABETH] Good job, girls!

[ELIZABETH] You all have improved over the past 4 months, I'm so proud!

[ELIZABETH] 5 more minutes and then we’ll talk about the competition schedule.

[???] So why does your ballet teacher want to talk to me?

[???] Not sure, she was really vague and didn't tell me why.

[???] Is she usually like that?

[???] I mean, she is a little more on the quiet side.

[???] So, typical ballerina snob?

[???] What the heck! Uh, no?

[?] Well, aren't most ballerinas snobby?

[???] Some can be but Miss Elizabeth is very kind!

[???] *rolls eyes* Sure she is, and more than likely a snob.

[JURI] Akio, please don't go in hot. I know she means well and there's enough drama in our family. I need ballet to be my safe place.

[ELIZABETH] Ah, Juri. Welcome. Is this a family member with you?

[AKIO] Yes, I'm her older brother. Is there a reason you wanted to speak to me? Do we have a problem?

[JURI] *looks down, speaks softly* Akio, please.

[ELIZABETH] *clears throat* Well, Mr. Hayashi. I want to talk about Juri being late for class the past 4 weeks. I understand that life happens, but I do expect my students to show upon time or communicate if they'll be late. If there's anything I can do, I'm more than happy to work with you all towards something that supports Juri.

[AKIO] What do you mean Juri has been late for the past 4 weeks? Does class not start at 7:30?

[ELIZABETH] Due to competition season starting in 2 months, I've sent a few emails to let students and families know that class from February and on will be starting at 7:00. This is to have more time to warm up and practice. Did you not get those emails, Mr. Hayashi?

[AKIO] No, our parents have been looking after Juri’s ballet stuff, but due to private family matters

that are none of your business, she’s staying with me. Juri also didn’t tell me anything.

[ELIZABETH] No need to share anything private with me. A little miscommunication, perhaps?

We’ll get that sorted out, no problem. Juri, please get ready for class.

[JURI] Yes, I’m sorry Miss Elizabeth.

[ELIZABETH] Mr. Hayashi, let me make something clear. My students’ well-being matters to me.

I just want to make sure Juri gets the most out of this class.

[AKIO] Got it. I’ll make sure she shows up on time. Thank you for being kind, miss.

*Akio leaves, door closes*

[CECELIA] I hope you both enjoyed the tour of the lighthouse venue! Would you like to go over next steps?

[WILL] Yeah, I do want to know more about the final cost. What could the venue provide? Do we have to source our own food and beverage? Do we have access to the upstairs suite?

[CECELIA] Great question Will. For the day, of the wedding with everything included the total cost is §7,000. That includes all the amenities, catering, a bartender, using the upstairs suite and a complementary photobooth.

If you are looking to hire outside catering, that will bring your cost down to §6,000. They are allowed to use the venue's kitchen.

[WILL] Good to know and good options to consider! Kath, what do you think?

[KATHLEEN] Could I look around a little more? I trust Will in asking questions and making decisions. I just need a quiet moment.

[WILL] For sure, my love.

[CECELIA] *smiles* Absolutely. It's so lovely to work with a couple that respect and trust each other.

thinking about your mom, on top of it being almost 10 years since she passed. I think it's quite normal you're thinking about her.

[WILL] I know it can't be easy to have Caroline and Lizzy far away. They've been amazing despite being far, not that having them closer would prevent you from thinking about your mom.

[KATHLEEN] I've never thought about that, but it makes sense. It sucks having them far, but I'm so proud of them.

[WILL] Baby, I'm proud of you.

[KATHLEEN] *deep sigh* Oh Will.

[WILL] You're an editor-in-chief, smart, kind, beautiful and always want to learn something new.The way you love people is beautiful and selfless. I cannot wait to marry you, love.

[ELIZABETH] Class was okay. One of my students has been late quite a bit, so I wanted to have a conversation with a family member. So her older brother comes in with hot with "do we have a problem?" Dude, I'm trying to not have any problems. 2 months until competition and I need focused students.

[ELIZABETH] I think proactively. I know people who don’t know me may think I’m uptight, but

I can’t take anything for granted. These girls are incredibly talented and by far the most dedicated. I know they’re

going to complete extremely well. Just for all their hard work, I have a ski trip planned.

[ELIZABETH] When a parent or guardian immediately goes on the defense and are assholes about things.

It bothers me more than it should, Lil. I get older brothers, you know Owen...

[LILY] Ooof, that is rough. Don’t let that guy ruin it for you, though. Remember what Aya and Eiko’s parents said?

You’ve been an amazing teacher and Eiko has been happiest she’s ever been since being in your class.

[LILY] Cut yourself some slack, Liz! I know the girls will love the ski trip. I’ll try not to spill it to Aya!

[ELIZABETH] Please don’t! Even though I love how close Aya and Eiko are.

[LILY] Love the Nakamura sisters! Just out of curiosity, whose brother was being an asshole?

[ELIZABETH] Juri Hayashi’s. I didn’t catch his name.

[LILY] *laughs* No way! Akio Hayashi? An asshole? He absolutely can be one, but he isn’t one. He’s a good guy, I promise! You haven’t met him yet because he’s been a travelling bartender. He came home to his family in shambles

and his girlfriend cheating on him. Not to excuse his behaviour at all. He’s best friends with Kiyoshi.

[ELIZABETH] And Kiyoshi wouldn’t be friends with an asshole. He did mention there was personal family issues, so I

didn’t press further. Wow, I can see where his behaviour came from. It’s clear he loves Juri.

[LILY] Akio was one of the first people who reached out after Dad disowned me, and told me if I didn’t get my sofu’s house, I could stay in his apartment until I figured things out. He’s a good guy. He’s coming to the housewarming tomorrow!

[ELIZABETH] Well, I look forward to actually meeting Akio. I trust you more than most people, Lily.

So far, your friends are becoming my friends and I really adore all of them!

[LILY] Oh, I think you two are going to get along really well! Not to mention, girl, he is FINE!

[ELIZABETH] Oh, he totally is! I just really need to figure things out with Taku.

[ELIZABETH] I feel totally strung along by him.

[LILY] I can imagine. I love Taku, he just doesn’t know what he wants, and you deserve someone who knows that he wants you.

[ELIZABETH] So do you, Lil. Has Cleo gotten back to you?

[LILY] Pffff. No. She’ll come crawling back into my arms tonight. If she doesn’t change, I’m so done. Flirting with Rose was too much.

[ELIZABETH] *Sigh* Why do people who don’t want to commit go after people who do?

[LILY] No idea. To be fair, when Cleo and I were first a thing, I didn’t want to commit. Now I do, and she’s being wishy-washy.

[LILY] I wonder if she’s intimidated by the fact I’ve managed to renovate a house that I now own. She seems to not love it when I achieve things. Whatever, as long as she doesn’t, like, flirt or sleep with an ex then we’ll be fine. At least I have you and Lacey to support me.

Later that night..

[LILY] (in thought) And here she is. Just as I thought after running away when things got hard. She’s back. I don’t know how much more I can take-

[CLEO] Baby, I promise I won’t run away again!

[LILY] Okay, Cleo.

[SINÉAD] Caroline! *hugs Caroline* So good to see you! The guys are all working from home upstairs, but I'm sure your brother let you know.

[CAROLINE] Yes, Owen did let me know! It's good to see you, Sinéad. How have you been?

[SINÉAD] Good and busy now that I'm looking into winemaking! Maeve is looking after the horses overnight, so I appreciate a tiny break to celebrate you and Ben tonight.

[CAROLINE] Ooooh, winemaking sounds like fun! If you need any testers, you know who to call!

I’m glad Maeve is able to help, I always forget how close Henford-on-Bagley is... I’d love to get out of the city eventually.

[SINÉAD] *laughs* I could see you in Henford-on-Bagley! It's also much closer to Brindleton Bay and the people are very kind there. I'll make us coffee and we can chat about the party tonight.

[CAROLINE] Now that I'm not tied to anyone in any city with any sort of lifestyle, I'm open to anywhere!

Sounds like a plan!

[SINÉAD] All that's missing for the party tonight are a few bottles of wine and catering, and those are being taken care of by Isla and Claire! Keeping it real simple for this party!Are we all just getting old or does the huge amount of pizzaand cheap Smirnoff Ice coolers that we consumed in previous years just not doing it anymore?

[CAROLINE] Seriously! I started to get really tired of the way we used to party in University.

I really feel like we're all growing up and really spending quality time with each other. Our people are truly, our people!

[CAROLINE] Speaking of, people. *shifts uncomfortably* I know this will be an awkward conversation I'll have to have multiple times... But Christopher isn't coming tonight, is he?

[SINÉAD] Oh, sweetie he wasn't even invited!

[SINÉAD] Owen was telling Ben that he's been acting all high and mighty since he dumped you.

*starts laughing* He has no idea his loss is simply your gain! I think tonight will be different, in such a good way!

[CAROLINE] So you hide and push me away? How am I supposed to believe you're just being a friend?

[CHRISTOPHER] It's not what you think it is. You're the one I go home with.

[CAROLINE] I'm pretty sure loving someone is choosing them beyond just going home with them. Holy shit, Chris. I've chosen you so many times! You're more than someone I go home with!

[CHRISTOPHER] No, I don't think you do love me. Louisa needs me, and your insecurities are getting in the way as they usually do. I'm done with you, Caroline. It's over.

[CAROLINE] Fine, throw away a beautiful 4-year relationship because my valid concerns are seen as insecurities. Good-bye, Christopher.

[CAROLINE] | cannot believe I fought so hard for our relationship and he didn't care.

[CAROLINE] Why did I try so hard for the past year? Or did we have issues for longer?

[ELLA] I understand, and I know you did. But do you feel any relief?

[CAROLINE] Now that you put it that way, I do feel a sense of relief knowing that I did what I could so it wasn't a complete failure.

[ELLA] And, you should be proud of yourself! You really stood your ground!

[CAROLINE] Mhm.

[CAROLINE] *in tears* But I feel so stupid El! Why didn't I see things sooner?

[ELLA] My dear friend, fighting for love and wanting to see the good in someone is not stupid! It hurts, but it isn't stupid.

[ELLA] One of the many reasons I appreciate you as a friend is how big your heart is. You know how to love people well. The people who actually love you won't take advantage of that.

If not doing either of those, she's probably canoodling with her now official boyfriend! You'll be excited to know who it is!

[THOMAS] Well, who is it?

[CAROLINE] Nate! As in Nate Ballard.

*The sound of dog feet get louder*

[THOMAS] Oh, how wonderful!! always loved having Nate over here during reading week. Well, young people, especially those two, finding genuine love is always exciting to hear.

[CAROLINE] It's been so great to see two deserving people find each other and experience love, for sure!

*The family Golden Retriever, Pearl runs over to Caroline. Thomas rescued Pearl when she was 3 months, 2 years ago*

[AKIO] Oh, my family is an absolute clusterfuck. But my question is actually about the girl sitting with Taku - who is she?

[KIYOSHI] That's Liz.! She's Lily's childhood best friend from Brindleton Bay. She's getting her Master's degree and teaching ballet. I wouldn't be surprised if she's Juri's ballet teacher. Liz is a real sweetheart though and super smart.

[AKIO] She is Juri's ballet teacher, 100%. Juri is living with me now and no one told me her ballet lessons were starting earlier and l know she's is struggling with family drama so she's been late to class a few times. So she asked me to come with her to talk with her teacher and I may have been a dick towards her teacher... She was super professional, but I know she was pissed at how hot I came in, or I think I could tell she was.

[AKIO] So of course she's friends with Lily and you think highly of her because I can be too good at fucking things up.

[KIYOSHI] *raises eyebrow* Oh, Akio.

[KIYOSHI] I'm sure if you were to talk to her tonight and apologized, she would understand. She has an older brother, so she really understands how we all get sometimes. You don't have to tell her everything, but be real with her.

[AKIO] Are you sure?

[KIYOSHI] Absolutely, She may not be super warm because you were a dick to her, but it will at least be a clean slate, so to speak.

[KIYOSHI] Why do you care so much? I mean, she is really pretty-

[AKIO] Dude, don't even! I just can't have another interaction with someone go sour. I've had enough of that lately.

📍 Chisaka's, Mt. Komorebi

[AKIO] Yeah, so this restaurant is run by my older half-brother. This is essentially his inheritance from his grandfather on mother's side, so technically this is a family thing, just not my family, I guess?

[AKIO] *deep sigh* Fuck, family is complicated, huh? I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but some of the dynamics I would. A part of the tension going on with my family is my dad threatening to cut Isao off for taking over this restaurant. I don’t know if it’s one of his messed up ways of dealing with the grief of that failed marriage, but it’s really torn things apart.

[ELIZABETH] Oh, that must be so hard for your brother. I can tell he's just trying to honour his family's legacy in a meaningful way. After my mom died, one of my aunts felt like she was owed something because my mom was the "prettier" sister and she"suffered" because of her. It's really messed up how legitimate feelings of grief can be dealt with in such unhealthy ways. It makes me nervous for Kath's wedding.

[AKIO] I can imagine! That's really fucked up with your aunt though, I hope your sister is able to have her dream wedding.Now that I think about it, it’s the entitlement that gets in the way. Like you said, its not healing wounds in a healthy way. Anyway, I want to know more about your mom and your family. If you're comfortable sharing.

Family matters, and you matter to me.

[ELIZABETH] My mom was amazing! Totally warm, welcoming and made you feel like you mattered. She knew how to stand her ground and be bold, yet she was also shy. She passed away from heart failure when the twins were 17, Caroline was 15 and I was 13, she was so young. You know how it feels to be punched in the gut and have the wind taken out of you? I felt like that every day for almost a year. Being more on the quiet side, I for sure slipped through the cracks. My dad did his best, but it's hard to come to the realization that your parents aren't perfect.

[ELIZABETH] I think that’s why I went to school so far away. I wanted to get away from the place and the dynamics, not my dad or my siblings. To be completely honest with you, Akio, and I’ve only said this to Lily. I finally felt like I grieved my mom fully when Owen took my sorry ass out of Del Sol Valley. I had a good cry in his car and I got everything off my chest.

[ELIZABETH] It was really special because Owen and I don't always get a long, but during that road trip to Windenburg, we really bonded and opened up to each other. Family dynamics are rough, but when I learned to see my older siblings as people beyond just being my siblings, I love them more! I don't feel like I've been punched in the chest when I think about mom. She'll always be a part of me.And, I can carry that into other areas of my life, especially in my relationships. I still can't believe it's been almost 10 years.

[AKIO] Thank you for allowing me to know something so deep and special.

I learn so much about everything from you, Liz. Maybe I need to see my family as people beyond just as my family.

Maybe it would take out some of the emotion? You and your beautiful mind have given me something to chew on.

[ELIZABETH] We're all works in progress, Akio. We tend to figure things out as we go along.

[AKIO] Well, I'm lucky to have you in my life as I figure shit out. *winks*

[ELIZABETH] Wait, were you hitting on me? *winks* I'm grateful for you, babe. I've never felt safer with someone, I'm grateful for your emotional intelligence, and it's pretty sexy if I'm honest.

[AKIO] *blushes* Well, babe I'm so absolutely serious about, us. I've never felt cared for by anyone like you.

I see how passionate you are and how you care for others. I want you to know that I only do serious and committed, and I want that with you.

[ELIZABETH] *sighs deeply, relieved* I only want something serious with you, Akio.

"Whenever I miss her, I remember the breezy walks we went on from right after we got married until she passed. I go back to the places where the world blurred around us and we were 100% present with each other. We checked in with each other about our marriage, the kids, work and whatever was consuming our minds at the moment. I go back to us being Tom and Emmie, and it feels like home. After I reflect on those moments, I can be present with what's in front of me. Each year since her death, the grief doesn't go away, it just feels different. Year 10, I'm filled with gratitude. These days, I'm grateful to have spent 20 years married to her and to see her impact on the world continue. Where I see it the most is what personality traits our amazing kids got from her. Owen has her tender heart, Kathleen has her work-ethic, Caroline has her ability to make people feel seen, and Elizabeth has her quiet strength. [ELIZABETH] Ah, hi there Mr. Hayashi! You can sit if you would like, I won't bite you.

[AKIO] Please, call me Akio. Shit, I don't even think I properly introduced myself.

[ELIZABETH] *chuckles, sips drink* You were probably focused on how you were going to rake me over the coals yesterday!

[AKIO] Yeah, about that. I'm really sorry that I came in so hot. It wasn't right and you didn't do anything to deserve my frustration being taken out on you.

[ELIZABETH] Thank you Akio, I appreciate your apology. Juri told me there's a lot going on with your family and I know that a lot of the pressure is placed on and felt by the older siblings - so I understand.

[ELIZABETH] I also have an older brother who can be intense when my sisters and I go through things or have been hurt. He's gotten better as we've gotten older, but he was my rock when I needed someone a few months ago.

So I appreciate the love of an older brother.

[AKIO] Oh so you do kind of understand, even if it doesn't make sense when we're a little intense.

Not to justify shitty behaviour, of course. Are your sisters younger or older?

[ELIZABETH] I'm the youngest! Owen and Kathleen are twins and the oldest, then my sister Caroline, then me!

So I have 3 older siblings who I kept on their toes! *chuckles* Is it just you and Juri?

[AKIO] No, I'm the middle child. I have an older brother Isao and sister Suzume from my dad's first marriage.

My younger brother Touma, Juri and I are full siblings. I gotta know, why Mt. Komorebi? You'd think Del Sol Valley would be the ideal spot for professional dancers.

[ELIZABETH] Yeah, you'd think! I did my Bachelor's degree there, full scholarship. Top of my classes, won competitions, was asked to dance for major productions before I completed my second year there.

[ELIZABETH] But it was awful I learned the hard way I don't do well in hyper-competitive environments.

Mt. Komorebi's dance community is just as dedicated, but without the Del Sol lifestyle that began to do more harm than good.I needed a change that was more grounded and meaningful.

[ELIZABETH] My students ask about Del Sol Valley, and I don't encourage them to go unless that's what they want and where they would thrive. I'm happy where I am and I'm grateful for Lily!

[AKIO] Shit, yeah. I can see how the Del Sol lifestyle could really mess with you. Environments like those don't deserve kind people like you.

[ELIZABETH] You really think so?

[AKIO] I think I may know so! You could have bit my head off last night, I could tell you wanted to, but you care more about Juri's well-being than allowing me to be an asshole.

[CAROLINE] The further I get away from it, the more I see it. You've further validated all the feelings I questioned for years. Do you ever miss being closer to home?

[IVAN] Always. I'm tied up in a contract in San Sequoia for another 3 months, maybe after that I'll consider being closer to Windenburg. But will Windenburg feel like home again?

[CAROLINE] Humour me, Ivan. But do you think that "home" are people rather than a place? This house feels like home because my brother and the guys feel like home. My apartment in San Myshuno feels like home, especially when my girls are there.Brindleton Bay is home because my Dad and Kathleen are there. I don't know, but home is where my loved ones are, not necessarily a place.

[IVAN] *smiles softly at Caroline* Yeah, I think you're right.
