I hate when I bring up accessibility and people are like “well, in the hypothetical situation where something like that were to happen-“.
it’s happening. Disabled people currently exist. I’m not giving you a thought experiment, I’m asking you to have consideration for other peoples real experiences.

Just learned about the FBI counting “anarchist violent extremists” as domestic terrorists. I feel the need to remind everyone that, by the FBI’s definition of terrorism,
The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists The Founding Fathers were domestic terrorists

i mentioned this in the tags of another post somewhere but there rly is something so theatre kid core insane in rehearsing les mis and learning how to build a barricade and playing the role of a student in the rebellion at the same time as an awful winter is descending on you and you have no real way of knowing how much money you're going to have left and the coronation of king charles, which will most likely be millions of pounds worth of money spent on watching another racist idiot put a hat on, seems to be a more important use of the government's expenses than feeding and heating the homes of the rest of the country. like idk i really would love to hear the people fucking sing. or something.

The biggest reason I'm not part of a union is I chop and swap jobs constantly, like average of two different jobs a year, and I'm likely going to be out of work a fair amount in the future due to my disability.
This is the number one reason I also dislike tying all socialist movement purely to the workplace a la anarcho-syndicalism.

For the billionth time, there are more branches of feminism besides liberal and r*dical. If you're tired of liberal feminism's multiple, atrocious pitfalls you don't HAVE to turn to r*dical feminism (which even when people have tried to make trans inclusive turns out to be a massive shit show as fucking well because it's cursed AT THE ROOT).
There's womanism, decolonial feminism, eco-feminism, marxist feminism, anarcho-feminism, transfeminism, disabled feminism, lesbian and queer feminism, etc.
This false dichotomy of there only being two feminisms is how r*dfems manage to keep their relevancy. People UNDERSTANDABLY get fed up with superficial girl power and choice liberalism and make the jump to that cesspit instead of evaluating all their available options.
A lot of you claiming r*dical feminism can be "reclaimed" or whatever from transphobes don't even have a minimum grasp of what the ideological background behind it is, so you all think that anything that's feminist but isn't liberal feminism must be some form of r*dical feminism when most of it isn't. Stop ceding ground to those idiots so easily.

you know, in the abstract, i think there can, and have, been decent arguments for deontological morality. i don't quite find myself convinced by those arguments personally, but some of those arguments are actually decently well-constructed and coherent. Kant gets a lot of shit, but like, "I ought never to act except in such a way that I could also will that my maxim should become a universal law,” while a pretty flawed and incomplete concept, isn't terrible. like i can see the logic of it, and a community where that was the guiding principle everyone was attempting to follow would probably function at least somewhat adequately.
but like, in practice, outside of the context of philosophy wank, when i encounter deontological moral arguments in the wild, it's always the most mindless thought-terminating shit imaginable. like this:
Tumblr media
and to be clear this is extremely standard for libertarians, a vast number of them hold as their core deontological moral belief that it is never under any circumstances acceptable to have taxes, and while they may sometimes make arguments that hinge on the supposed utilitarian benefits of a libertarian ethos, this is mostly a show put on for outsiders. the bulk of libertarians and similar (ancaps, objectivists, etc) believe as this guy does that even in situations where following the libertarian ethos would lead to certain disaster, we are nonetheless bound to do so anyways. Because.
similarly from antiworksters- the whole thing hinges on the core deontological rule of "it is always bad to incentivize labor in any way whatsoever" and when you point out that if this were to be implimented on any kind of large scale, it would make it more likely that disabled people who require labor to care for them would be left to die in the absence of incentives to ensure that the labor to care for them is performed, instead of acting like a reasonable person and going "oh jeez! that's a massive oversight in our ethical framework, we should revise our framework to better account for that, perhaps jettison the 'never incentivize labor' rule since it's apparently deeply flawed" instead they either dodge the question or go "it doesn't matter if paraplegic people end up being left to die as a result of antiwork principles being implemented, the "never incentivize labor" rule can never be broken! Because."
and it's like. why not. like you guys realize you made these rules up. if following this moral code ends up bringing disaster or leaving disabled people to die you can just. not do that. no one is forcing you to follow this poorly thought out ethical code. quite the opposite in fact, since both anarcho-capitalism and anti-work anarchism are fringe ideologies at odds with how the vast majority of contemporary societies function.
and in both cases it's so obvious that the ideologies in question fundamentally hinge on a knee-jerk emotional reaction of not wanting to work/pay taxes, and then just deciding that actually, the very universe itself agrees with you that you should never ever have to work or pay taxes, and therefore the world should have to bend to your- sorry i mean the universe's will, even if society crumbles to dust as a result. fundamentally juvenile.

To what purpose, April, do you return again? (or: finally, a pinned post for April)
Hi all. I'm Jessie Lynn McMains, aka Rust Belt Jessie. I'm an Xennial/Elder Millenial (please don't call me a Geriatric Millenial, thank you) writer/artist/zine-maker/etc. (I wear many hats.) I'm queer and nonbinary/genderfluid, and as far as pronouns go, I’m okay with any human pronoun (they and she are my most-used, but I like he, too, and I especially like it when people switch up the pronouns they use for me). I’m disabled and neurodivergent.
I live with my partner and our two kiddos, both of whom are also neurodivergent, and right now I’m supporting all of us on whatever money I earn. I do freelance copywriting and editing as my main thing, but I also make a decent chunk of my income from selling my zines and books and pins and whatever else I make, so the more I sell, the better able I am to pay bills and take care of my family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through my Ko-fi, you can buy my zines and books (I have both poetry and prose available) and pins, as well as commission me to make you a music-inspired mini-collage or hire me to edit your own writing. Or also just throw me a few bucks if you appreciate the content I make available for free.
If you live outside the US (I can only ship within the US via Ko-fi, because setting up shipping for multiple countries is a pain the butt), or just prefer to purchase something or donate via a different platform, I also have PayPal and Venmo (@ JessieLynnMcMains).
I also have a Substack newsletter. I try to send something out at least once a month. Sometimes it's a longer piece about music and nostalgia (I recently started a series called These Fucking Songs, for just that purpose), sometimes it's just updates on what I'm up to, sometimes it's something else. I'm currently working on one about poetry, and my writing process, and revision.
Tumblr media
As if that weren't enough, this month I'm doing a 30/30 on the Tupelo Press site, which not only means I have to write a poem every day to be posted the next day, but I am also fundraising for Tupelo Press. My goal is to raise $350 by the end of the month. You can follow along with my daily poems here (the newest is always at the top; scroll down to read previous days), and the fundraising page is here. (I'm also offering some cool incentives for people who donate; more info about all that is available on the fundraising page.)
I'm pro-trans, pro-vaccine, pro-sex worker, pro-abortion, pro-Black Lives Matter. I'm for harm reduction for any drug user or addict, meaning I want them to be able to use drugs as safely as possible, rather than forcing them into rehab or incarcerating them. I'm anti-censorship and anti-fascist. I believe everyone, everyone, should have a safe place to sleep and enough to eat without having to earn it. I consider myself an anarcho-socialist, basically, but I do vote. I'm telling you all that because if you are vehemently against any of those things, we'll probably not get along.
Tumblr media
I'm a forever-goth/punk who loves all kinds of music. (Things on heavy rotation for me as I write this are: The Replacements, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Oliver Nelson.) I'm femme but I'm a disaster femme; when I use nailpolish it's always sloppy and/or chipped, when I wear eyeliner it's always crooked and/or smeared, and I am incapable of not ripping a hole or two in every pair of tights and stockings I own. I love art and film and theater and literature and music. I'm a Shakespeare stan, I love growing my own vegetables, I collect souvenir pennies and stick and poke tattoos. I'm always a slut in theory, even when not always in practice. I'm perpetually nostalgic, melancholy, and restless. I spend all my free time posting pictures of myself on the internet and trying to prove I'm punk to anyone that'll listen.
Want more Jessie content? There's my website (still under construction, but it exists). Or you could try searching the my writing, my art, Jessie Lynn McMains, or Rust Belt Jessie tags on this blog. I also have a side blog, where I tend to post more frequently than I do on this blog. If you ask nice, I'll probably give you the URL.
On that note, my DMs and asks are open, and, as of right now, anon is on.
I think that's it! As always, whether you can send any $$ my way (or to my fundraiser) currently or not, keeping this post circulating helps. Thanks much. 🖤

Here’s some positivity for systems who are punk or pluralpunk!
Punks of any movement play key roles the movements they are a part of. Plural punks and those who are pluralpunk are not only important members of the plural community, but they helped make it into what it is today! Here’s to all the pluralpunks out there, and the punks who are plural!
🖤 Shoutout to systems who are part of the pluralpunk subculture!
🩼 Shoutout to systems who are a part of madpunk, cripplepunk, crustpunk, solarpunk, straight edge, anarcho-punk, or other punk subcultures!
🤘 Shoutout to systems who push against oligarchy, monarchy, colonialism, imperialism, and authoritarianism, who are involved in leftist politics in their cities, and who fight back against unfair establishments!
🌿 Shoutout to systems who are poor or live in poverty while still finding ways to live punk lifestyles!
☀️ Shoutout to systems who take part in mutual aid and give back to their communities!
🪡 Shoutout to systems who sew, cross-stitch, repair furniture and appliances, and know other skills to help prolong longevity of every day items!
🎵 Shoutout to systems who are inspired by alternative and punk fashion and music!
♿️ Shoutout to disabled systems and those with chronic pain whose disabilities prevent them from learning DIY skills! We promise you’re just as punk even if you can’t practice DIY!
📖 Shoutout to systems who create flyers and zines, table at events, and help spread the word of the punk movement in their spaces!
🎨 Shoutout to systems who are punk artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and other creatives!
🌟 Shoutout to systems who are Black, Indigenous, or Asian punks, and to all punks who are people of color! Y’all are the pillars and cornerstones of these movements - have always been and always will be!
🌈 Shoutout to individual headmates who are punks in systems who aren’t! Your punk identity is not invalidated in the slightest by not sharing punk culture with your system!
📢 Shoutout to systems who stand up against and readily call out transphobia, homophobia, racism, xenophobia, and other forms of bigotry in their spaces!
Remember punk is a culture, a mindset, and a way of life! There’s no one right way to be punk - punk is by nature refusing conformity and living life on your own terms outside societal standards! So please embrace your identities as plural and punk, and feel free to express yourself and be yourself in punk spaces!
We’re wishing the very best for you and your system in all that you do! Remember to stay safe and anonymous when engaging in direct action, keep yourself hydrated at punk shows and events, and give yourself plenty of breaks when crafting if you need them! It’s punk to take care of ourselves in a world that’s actively working against us! Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful day!

Something to understand that not all pain gets better by doing nothing. Sometimes laying in bed makes it worse.
Sometimes my hip fucks up and the only way to make it better is to walk on it, carefully, for like an hour.
Sometimes my back hurts in a way that means I can’t use my mobility aids without making it worse.
Sometimes my throat has issues only singing can fix.
So the whole “oh you said you were injured / in pain but then you went and did (__activity__), so clearly you were faking it” thing is entirely fucking meaningless.
You aren’t “catching fakers”, you are just fundamentally misunderstanding the human body.

r/raisedbynarcissists is ableist
r/raisedbynarcissists (or RBN as I’ll call it) is a subreddit that claims to be a support group for victims of “narc abuse” and while I don’t doubt these people were abused by their parents, they actively harm people with NPD with their stereotyping.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder where a person has an inflated sense of ego. This is formed from a combination of factors but the main one is childhood trauma. It is often demonized by egotypical people, including other neurodivergent folks without NPD.
The term “narc abuse” implies pwNPD are inherently abusive and cannot be anything more than their disorder. Most of the parents described on RBN are just your average emotional abuser, gaslighter, and manipulator. These traits do not indicate the parent in question has NPD.
If someone with any other disorder abused you; you wouldn’t call it “depressive abuse” or “autistic abuse” because those disorders don’t make a person abusive either. Can someone with NPD be an abuser? Of course. But so can egotypicals, anyone can be an abuser!
RBN also has a strict rule set including that pwNPD cannot post or respond, they actively silence the community they are attacking and spreading lies about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see they also demonize people with ASPD, another heavily stigmatized personality disorder.
This subreddit is an ableist hate group disguising itself as a “support group”.
I myself have CPTSD and am egotypical; but blaming an entire marginalized group for something they didn’t even have part in is vile. RBN isn’t a safe space for trauma survivors, it actively keeps trauma survivors if they developed NPD from their abuse.
Here is how to report RBN for hate speech.
Here is a subreddit that speaks out against hate subs where I encourage people to post about the ableism RBN spreads.

I saw ur post in the solarpunk tag and! I think we can do better! I think nobody should have to work ever, because how do we pick who's exempt? who's making that decision? the only way I can think for it to be fair is if the person themself gets to make that decision.
bc like the system you're describing isn't hypothetical and as someone who's gone through a nightmare of uncaring bureaucracy just to be allowed not to work due to disability I can say it doesn't work and definitely doesn't feel like a utopia!
I don't follow you and not gonna come back to this so do with it what you want but yeah something to consider I guess
Points I agree with:
People should have the ability to self-determine their capacity to work, and should not be expected to work if they are unable to.
External parties should not be deciding who is able or unable to work.
Points I disagree with:
"Nobody should have to work ever"
I may be misunderstanding you, but... life is work. Someone needs to drive trains, design functional sewerage systems, deliver babies, rescue people from burning buildings, grow rice, implement grain shipping logistics, change diapers, develop vaccines, wash clothes, teach children to read, sterilise surgical equipment, provide counselling to antisocial or dangerous people, cook food for the elderly, insert urinary catheters, repair potholes in roads, pick up rubbish, code the software that checks pressure in dam walls, etc.
None of the above jobs are particularly sexy. Very few people would dream of performing any of these roles when they are growing up. But the work is necessary to maintain a functional society. What links these jobs is that they are meaningful. They help. They improve society. People can find purpose and fulfillment in these tasks because they know they are helping society, even if indirectly.
There are so many jobs in our current society that do not provide a benefit to anyone other than a select few capitalists. If we restructured to become more 'solarpunk' (which I interpret as more communist and likely more anarchist than current societies), these capitalist jobs wouldn't exist, and we wouldn't miss them. Merchant bankers, advertising executives, influencers, soldiers, funko-pop factory workers (I have a personal dislike for these products; such an overt waste of materials and for literally no benefit! people often don't even take them out of their packets?!?!), mortgage brokers, the list goes on.
If we redirected the people working in these capitalist jobs towards roles that directly help society.... everyone would work a lot less, but society would function just as effectively, if not more so. There would be fewer jobs, and more people to do them. There would be more chance to rest and enjoy leisure time. And yes, some people would probably be able to never work at all, if they chose to. But if the work is meaningful, I genuinely believe most people would want to work, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect people to do something meaningful for others even for just a few hours a week (clean the dishes at the cafeteria or babysit your friend's kids). But no, I don't think people's work contributions should be monitored or quantified at all, unless it's to tell people to rest when they are overworked. People should work of their own volition. And of course those with disabilities or any other factors that prevent them from working safely shouldn't need to work if they are unable or unwilling.
An interesting book that portrays a world that is anarcho-communist is The Dispossessed, by Ursula K LeGuin. It details the struggle between the need for work VS personal freedom exceptionally well.

The real problem with 2020 was probably just that the left sucks
Tumblr media
Freddie DeBoer and Vincient Bevins have both recently published books that purport to examine the manner in which the left-seeming energy of 2020 dissipated. I have purchased each but not been able to bring myself to read either. Not because I dislike the authors; quite the opposite, I admire them greatly and read their debuts. The problem is that I really, really don't want to admit to myself how much the events of 2020 broke my hope and spirit.
What was your favorite lefty moment of that horrible year?
Was it the time an Hispanic business owner defended his storefront against anti-police protestors with a chainsaw, which caused said anti-police protestors to squeal that they were calling the police?
Was it when Chris Martin Palmer, an NBA reporter for ESPN, first tweeted "Burn that shit down. Burn it all down" along with a screenshot of a large arson in a dilapidated American city while his avatar was a cartoon portrait of George Floyd. And then, the very next day--same account, same avatar--he tweeted "They just attacked our system community down the street. It's a gated community and they tried to climb the gates. They had to beat them back. Then destroyed a Starbicls and are now in front my building. Get these animals TF out of my neighborhood. Go back to where you live."
(Screenshot below. It has to be seen to be believed):
Tumblr media
Or, saving the worst for last, perhaps your fondest memory was of Seattle's "Capital Hill Autonomous Zone," typically referred to as CHOP or CHAZ. Autonomous Zones were first theorized by "anarcho-immediatist" poet Hakim Bey, who envisioned them as lawless areas within larger communities that provided "radical safety" to their inhabitants. No laws, sure, but a helluva lot of rules. You can shoot up on the sidewalk or light a car on fire no problem, but if you dare misgender someone, express a forbidden thought, or otherwise just look funny, you are liable to get murdered by one of the self-annointed CHAZ "security personnel," hormone-guzzling freaks armed with assault rifles.
You can guess how this played out. They had their tents, their drum circles, their needle exchanges, and their woefully pathetic community garden. They also executed at least one black child who was joyriding a stolen car within their supposedly law-free utopia. We know this happened because one of their brain dead community members posted a joyful tweet about the "beautiful shot placement" of said hormone-guzzling freaks (although a video of the incident, since scrubbed from the internet, confirmed the murder occurred after the vehicle was disabled).
Tumblr media
What was the explanation for this? Not just for the murder itself, but for the celebration afterward? Well, they were scared and also the black kids were doing a minor crime. Literally, without exaggeration, within just a couple weeks of establishing their ideal, radical community, the left had become an even worse version of the murder cops they were supposedly protesting.
And so... I dunno. Maybe the spirit of 2020 wasn't coopted by powerful forces or anything so much as it just sucked? Like, maybe these people are just violent shitheads whose differentiation from the far right is much more a matter of style than of substance? Maybe there's no path forward. Maybe there's no light at the end of our tunnel but just another, shittier tunnel?

When Tax Collector was a profession in Dwarf Fortress
Today, if you dig secure lodgings your dwarves will live in an anarcho-communist society. Sure, you have nominal nobles such as Mayors, Barons and Monarchs, but all the dwarves have access to Fortress resources. However...
Long ago in the yesterday of 2007, nearly a year ago the first Alpha release of Dwarf Fortress has been uploaded to the Bay12 games website. No z-levels, no Artifacts and cats could adopt visitors to your fortress. And when you had appointed a bookkeeper and manager, the dynamic of dwarves would suddenly change...
Your fortress would suddenly go from to anarcho-communist to Capitalist. Dwarves would suddenly gain an account balance on their unit screen and hoard coins in their bedrooms, a new price menu would appear and shop would be available to build. In addition,
Dwarves would be paid salaries for producing goods (receiving a starting sum of ☼200 when the economy was activated.)
Dwarves would pay rent for rooms with higher quality rooms costing more.
The bookkeeper would demand the production of coins.
Nobles would change prices
Legendary noble dwarves didn't need to pay rent
Dwarves would be taxed from their belongings randomly
This neat little arrangement simulated a miniature economy. Dwarves who owned quality goods and better bedrooms would be happier, while dwarves who failed to do so...
she has been evicted lately (mood -10)
Tumblr media
Further, developments led to the economy being unlocked on the arrival of a Baron, Count or Duke.
Dwarves paid for rent and food. Dwarves strapped for cash bought poor-quality food and would go into debt to not starve.
Coin moving would take precious work time from dwarves as they carried out transactions and collected their salaries
More features only increased the chaos. It was found that producing coins would actually make the citizens finances worse as the time wasted performing transactions, led to increased debt and inevitably mass homelessness. And when I say nobles changed prices, if you thought mandates were annoying then:
Tumblr media
Dwarf Fortress's ever-ingenious players thus found themselves devising exploits strategies for preventing a tantrum spiral revolution kicking off whenever the aristocratic parasites barons arrived. These included intensive pumping regimes to quickly boost dwarves' skills to legendary and stockpile hauling cycles to provide easy and consistent employment.
The economy was disabled in 2010, but Toady One (Tarn Adams) has stated that he plans to reintroduce the economy in the future. Due to the unpopularity of its original implementation, it will not be without drastic changes. To this day players discuss possible models. I hope to see the dwarven economy again; imagine a tax collector doing the rounds every week. It would be nice if the value system was ironed out though.

A bit of storytime
Tumblr media
Okay, this week I wrote about some pretty heavy stuff in regards of capitalism and all of that. So, let me end the week with something more light and maybe just a bit inspiring.
I want to tell you the story of how my roomie radicalized herself.
Now, my roomie and I are living together for about three years now. And when we met she made a big big point about being centrist. And about making fun of everyone and, quote, "hating all people equally".
You should know, my roomie is female, queer and disabled. Her boyfriend is also disabled (like badly disabled - he is blind and in a wheelchair). But she still was very, very centrist and in the lines of "police is actually good" and "communism is a bad word".
By now she isn't. And the story of how it got there is kinda a funny one.
When we moved in together, I was already starting to identify as anarchist, while she did not want to hear anything about that. In fact she made a rule of not discussing politicis with me. And she stuck by that. While I was radicalizing myself further through seeing how capitalism failed us in the pandemic, she... didn't.
That was until June 2021. When she suddenly came to my room and was like: "So, the police is actually bad, isn't it?" I, dumbstruck, was like: "Uhm, yeah. Obviously. Where does this come from?" And she replied: "Yeah, I just heard what they are doing to the indigenous people in the USA and Canada. And that is bad, right?"
Me, who at that point had been following indigenous rights movements for a good while was like: "Yeah. Sure. Uhm, do you want some reading material on that?" And while she did not want reading stuff, she took the podcasts I offered for it eagerly.
I still got curious, though. Where did this come from? So I did some prodding. Asking her about it. And it turned out... It came from true crime.
June is not only pride month, it is also indigenous peoples month. And one of the true crime channels on Youtube she was following did a whole month worth of videos on MMIW, which also went into how the police are not following up on those cases or are, at times, responsible for what is happening in the first place.
And this was, what convinced her that, indeed, the police might not be a good thing.
Now, outside from giving her those Podcasts recommendations, I did not do a thing. I did not go all anarcho-communist on her or anything. I just... let her roll with it. And rolling she did. In the end she came out on the socialist-communist end of it. Because it turns out that you barely can learn about decolonialisation and indigenous rights, without ending up at this point.
Why am I telling you this?
Mostly, because I found it kinda wholesome. The fact that she did not go and end up left-wing because she realized the harm done to herself by the system - but because she realized the harm done to other people and found it unaccaptable.
It is also showing one thing: Usually the entire pro-capitalist worldview needs just one little crack to crumble.
Personally I found, that for many the crack is climate change. But as you can see... It is not the only possible crack that can happen.
Which is why it actually is important to teach people. And be it online.
We also need action, yes. But also education. Because education is our friend.
