reminder to support your local strikes.
whether that be by joining picket lines, donating to strike funds, or just spreading awareness of any industrial action that's going on, any assistance helps.
don't listen to the anti-union rhetoric being pushed by the right, both in and out of government. the reason it's become so prevalent in recent years is that the establishment is so afraid of losing out on even the smallest amount of profit, that they'll do anything they can to suppress it.

Let me talk Anarchism
Tumblr media
Okay, let me quickly talk about it, because I am so annoyed with this. For once in the way how it relates to Solarpunk, but also in relation to media. And yeah, choosing good old Hobie here, because while it was kinda played for humor with him a lot, he was one of the few characters in media I have seen, that are actually kinda a positive representation of anarchism.
You know, media in general misrepresents anarchism all the time. Sometimes for propaganda purposes, and sometimes because the creator does not know any better and has grown up with said propaganda themselves and just believe it. Most of the time, media hence represents Anarchism as "Society without rules!", which is most certainly not what anarchism is.
The word Anarchism comes from the Greek An Arkhos, which translates into "Without Rulers". That is exactly what Anarchism means. Anarchism is a political philosophy that aims to get rid of all unjustified, involuntary hierarchies.
This is, by the way, why Anarcho Capitalism might use the word, but can never be anarchist, because capitalism aims to build unjustifiable hierarchies. It is exactly the goal of the system. So Anarcho Capitalism is a contradiction in itself.
An anarchist society will still have rules. We know that, because there have actually been societies in history, that today we would call anarchist. It is just that instead of a sort of some group of people ruling over everyone else deciding on those rules, everyone would get to have their say in it. That is, why those historical examples of anarchism for the most part have sprung up in smaller, close-nit societies, because before the age of the internet it would've been rather hard to make everyone's voice heard.
If you are wondering: "But isn't democracy already doing that?" The answer is no. Because democracy is not working, due to the politicians having all the power and the populus not being able to force them to stick to whatever they promised during the election. We cannot recall politicians, who have lied to us. So for the most part, it is the people with big money, who influence the politics. People, who were not even elected, but who the politicians will try to please more than the average joe, who has voted for them.
It is another reason, why a lot of anarchists are against the police. Not only do they use police violence, but they are in a position, where they are allowed to use it against people, often without much reprecussions. And all of that, without the people having any say in who does and does not get to be a police(wo)man. It is another unjustified hierarchy.
And, yes, it is also why anarchists tend to be against the concept of nation states. Because internationally some states rule over others. Colonialism might've ended on paper, but it has not ended in practice. The reason some nations are poor, while others are rich, is that the poor nations get exploited by rich nations. An unjustified hierarchy. And that is without starting on the fact how many borders have been drawn by people, who had no right to do so.
On the small scale, though, anarchism first and foremost is about helping people. Mutual aid is one of the core principles of the anarchist movement. Helping people, who got left behind by the unjustified state and the people who are in power. It is also about empowering people and allowing them to find their own voice.
See, here is the fact: One of the core believes in anarchy is, that people are actually not terrible. If the state stopped existing tomorrow, people would not run around, murder and pillage. They would still help one another. We have seen this time and time again when through war or natural catastrophies systems of power have failed. People help each other. Because we are actually a pretty social species.
This is also why I absolutely loathe the depiction we see in a lot of media. Most of all in Legend of Korra. Where not only the Red Lotus, as an anarchist group, does not do jack shit in terms of mutual aid and things like that... We also see basically the Earth Kingdom go to ruins and violence within minutes of the Earth Queen having been killed. Like, no, that is not how people would react in that situation. There would not be instant riots or some shit. Jesus. What made them think that?
And yes, sure. Some anarchists might riot on the streets, because they riot AGAINST the unjust system. But always remember: Usually, when there is police violence for example against a protest, it is your friendly neighborhood anarchist, who will be willing to put themselves between you and the police.

"Anarchism is not a set of answers. It’s a set of tools with which to find answers. The answer to “how would anarchist society handle the following,” is “we will organize in such a way that those who are most capable of answering that question will be able to get together and answer it.” I don’t mean this as a vague platitude, I mean it concretely. When workers control a factory, for example, rather than the stockholders, efficiency is increased, pay is increased, working conditions improve, and hours are shorter. In an anarchist society, the people who know how to make and distribute medicine will be able to meet and discuss how to produce better medicine more efficiently, and there would not be the monetary barrier between a patient and her meds, nor the national barrier between a researcher and her peers.
When we say “we don’t know what an anarchist society would be like because we are not yet in one,” we are not being vague or evasive. We are saying that societies ought to be constructed by the people in them. Anarchism is a set of tools and principles with which to construct societies that value freedom and cooperation. We actually do have examples of what those societies can look like, but where we are at now, and where we will be in the future, is not revolutionary Catalonia, Ukraine during the Russian Civil War, or Korean Manchuria. We should not expect to reach the same answers as they did, even if we apply similar problem-solving methods to our problems.
We draw from history–not just from the history of self-styled anarchists like those examples above, but the lived experiences of people who are from cultures that are not traditionally state societies or capitalist. We draw from history to write our present, and to prepare to collectively write our future."
— Margaret Killjoy, "Anarchism and Its Misunderstanders".

Flag flown within the loosely-defined territory of the self-proclaimed New Jersey Autonomous Zone (sometimes also called the New Jersey Free Territory) which emerged in the turbulent final decades of the 21st century
The flag featured an updated version of the traditional NJ coat of arms incorporating popular symbols such as the Jersey/Rutgers tomato, cranberries, the Jersey Devil, and a regionally infamous lunch meat

if you engage in infighting, you are useless as a leftist.
if you tell people to k*ll themselves, you are useless as a leftist.
if you do not believe in somebody’s ability to change, you are useless as a leftist.
if you do not practice nuanced thinking, you are useless as a leftist.
if you are unable to have compassion for your fellow human, you are useless as a leftist.

literally anyone with any historical understanding: "yeah the inherent shortcomings of democracy are among the core ways how and why fascism happens"
socialist anarchists: "democracy is how we will ensure self determination for all, fix the shortcomings of communism, and prevent fascism!"

ngl i feel like a lot of the 'online left'™ is less focused on actually fighting for socialism, and more focused on adopting the radical aesthetic without engaging in any real world activities that would further leftist causes.
like, prices of everyday goods are at an all time high, we are on the brink of ecological collapse, fascism is on the rise across the globe, and marginalised people are being stripped of their rights every single day.
and yet, while a lot of people are actually getting out there and taking direct action, organising, etc., some of us are too busy just ranting about how the world's going to shit, or arguing amongst ourselves on twitter, or just reading theory without applying said theory to the real world.
don't get me wrong, social media is an important vehicle for the spread of leftist ideas, theory is absolutely vital for understanding how the current systems operate, and our anger is completely justified. but none of these things can change anything without mass movements across the globe taking direct, revolutionary action.
basically, theory is nothing without praxis, and vice versa.
anyways, unhinged rant over lmao.
gonna go grab some breakfast :)

Money is worthless, actually
Tumblr media
Just a quick something, I wanted to share with you guys. Because in a weird way I consider it to be quite hopeful.
See, here is the thing: Money is worthless. Technically it is worthless. You cannot do anything from money. You cannot make food from money. You cannot build a house from money. You cannot knit a sweater from it. Not from the coins, not from the paper, not from imaginary numbers on your bank account.
If for some reason money just vanished tomorrow, people would not in fact die. They just would find other ways to deal with it.
Money was originally probably partly invented, because it made both the collection of taxes - and the payment of people working for the "empire". Most societies before just... shared. They literally shared, because they knew that their society worked better if everyone just got, what they needed. Often it was on the basis of "gift" societies. To translate it into a modern understanding (because we still kinda do that): "You need eggs to make a cake? Sure. I will give you some. But next week, when I gonna need some butter, you will give me some of that."
It makes the economy trudge along just a bit easier. But it is not required for it to work.
Money has only worth as long as the people agree that it has that worth. Which is usually what happens whenever a currency collapses: People no longer agree that the currency holds any worth. Yes, we can now go and argue about all those methods of inflation and what not. But the baseline thing that happens really is not that there is too much money, but that people agree that the money hence is worthless.
So, basically... Money is worthless.
Right now it is mostly just used as a tool of oppression, because it is linked to power. It can buy you power more than it can buy you anything else.
But we would not need it to make a society function. Which is also why I like to build my utopias around the idea of societies without money. Where people just get what they need, because it is the best for everyone.
Because whenever there is something like money around, someone will hoard it and it will inevitably lead to bad things. So...
Yeah. In the second Doctor Strange movie it is played for laughs that there are many worlds without money where you not pay for stuff. But... Why play it for laughs? Why not take it serious. You know?
Just a thought.
