hi, i was following the discussion around the ask regarding the “top shortage” article, and i’m honestly a prime example of the issue at hand; i don’t think i’ve ever initiated a successful interaction and thus far my sexual history has relied entirely on being approached by others.

there’s some garden variety fear of rejection (the mortifying ordeal of being known and all that) and some autism at play but what i find interesting and have been completely unable to unpack, is that i am in fact a quite effective communicator if i come across someone else who is also able to communicate well. the greatest hurdle in my experience is that trying to state my needs, ask for what i want, and solicit the same from the other person if they are not operating on a very high level of communication and transparency feels like swimming upstream through molasses. i simply don’t know how to navigate what feels like interrogating the other person just trying to small talk because they’re giving me single sentence answers with no elaboration on any discussion topic

you stated as a contrapoint to the idea of a top shortage that in your experience regardless of what community or sub-community you’re in “[when i make] any active attempt [] i’m drowning in options” . i’m understandably envious of this. really what i’m asking is what is the anatomy of an “active attempt”? is there a bullet list or perhaps a flow chart for how to guide the interaction towards the kind of discussion actually leads to getting laid?

So first, I'll say that while communication is always an interplay between at least two people and it must be responsive and dynamic (and if one can't communicate with a variety of types of people, one is not a good communicator) -- you can't squeeze water from a stone. There are many bad communicators online and in the kink and dating scenes, and if you find someone is sending the dryest possible texts imaginable and not giving you anything to work with, it's usually time to cut your losses and move on.

That said. Not everyone can easily put all their fantasies into words at the drop of a hat, but that doesn't mean they can't express their desires. This is where having a kinky tumblr or redgifs account or fetlife can really come in handy. Everyone has hang ups about what they want to some degree, and everybody runs out of ideas sometimes, and so trading pics and fics and porn videos back and forth with one another and taking note of what a partner of yours likes/reblogs and folding that into your own sexual repetoir is always an excellent move that shows you are considerate and communicative -- and it is itself a form of communication.

Some of my best partners over the years have been people who've been able to use the sending of an erotic gif or short story or video to get the conversation going and direct attention and desire. Plus exploring one another's kinks can really expand your own sexual palate of things you're into or down for, which means more future adventures for you either way! Communication is not only words, it's an act of inviting another person into your realm of experience and that can be physical, visual, aural etc.

As for how to go about actively communicating on say, fetlife or a dating app (or even tumblr, i've met people on here!):

I write in moderate detail about what I'm into, and I make it sound hot and fun! It's not a laundry list of expectations that I have in a partner or play scene, it's not a diatribe about hang ups or frustrations I've had on the site or with other people, it's bubbly, and infectious, and outlines some of my favorite things to do.

I've heard many times from strangers that even just reading my profile(s) has opened up their interest to a whole realm of activities and play themes that had never ever appealed to them before. This means I get a lot of curious questions and interest right off the bat, and from there I can review people's own profiles, ask them what they are into (that's usually how I word it, what are you into, or what kinds of play have you gotten into lately, etc), and take it from there. It always evolves pretty naturally because I take a genuine interest in people and want to hear all about their past activities and present interests and it flows easily from there.

And on the flip side, if I see that someone else is cute, or they have mutual interests to mine, I reach out to them, tell them how I feel, ask questions relevant to the kink, and again just direct a lot of interested genuine attention their way while also sharing excitedly about the stuff i've done and the things i'm into. In either case, whether I've been contacted or am contacting someone, if the vibes are good I move pretty quickly to escalate to actually meeting up or doing something, usually within a few days (or that same night if its that kinda app lol).

I dont know, if the interest is mutual and both parties are open and excited it all moves pretty easily! Doesn't mean every encounter is all that much fun, some people you just dont have chemistry with in person -- but you want to identify people who are compatible and who can express themselves openly as quickly as possible, kindle that connection, and then escalate it to real contact quickly as well. And communicating openly is not about being the best writer or orator, it's a question of spirit -- is the person closed off, or are they genuinely excited to share themselves with you and to take you in. And that's worth asking about oneself as well: am i an open, enthusiastic, present listener. but, like i said, this also means ignoring or fading away on plenty of dry, nothing-there messages.

I wonder if in your case getting more in touch with who and what you desire in an active way rather than a responsive way could be helpful, since you mentioned mostly only having success when approached. Maybe you can challenge yourself to find at least five people you find hot and message them this week. And take notice of feelings that you have about that, or people that you tell yourself you don't deserve to message, or any other points of resistance you feel internally and what that resistance sounds/feels like. and then contacting the person anyway.

i have Many Thoughts about the rwrb movie!!!

okay i was writing tags for what was going to be a short snippet of thought on the movie but i just kept going in the tags and decided i wanted to write my opinions down somewhere. bear with me...

first and foremost it was exactly the type of cringe movie i expected it to be. the acting was pretty often subpar, as anticipated, but i have to say the leads put their whole PUSSIES into the emotional scenes. like the whole confrontation after henry essentially ghosts alex?? man those actors had RENT DUE and i love that for them.

this is 100% going on my list of comfort movies that i’ll end up watching twenty times, but it is, of course, flawed, and i would like to Talk About It

now, book to movie adaptations are very very rarely done justice, and this one proved to be no exception. i know things have to be excluded for budget/runtime/page-to-screen translation, and i am a smidge disappointed with what ended up on the floor

obviously june is a huge missing piece of the puzzle. i know she wasn’t hugely plot-relevant necessarily, but she was necessary to alex’s arc in discovering himself, and in her own character arc. i understand removing her if necessary, but i had hoped they would fill in those gaps with nora. which they did not do

getting into that, nora and bea, both of whom were incredibly strong characters in the book with their own story and interests and relevance to the story outside of being sounding boards for the leads. i personally feel they butchered both of those characters in the film. bea has no personality, none of the spark we see in the books. nora as well, was so so smart, was such a great friend to alex and was always there for him. her shining moment of emerging with the answer to the hack that no one else could find was totally excluded too, because of the change in that entire plot as well. i would’ve liked to have gotten to see the ‘super six’ too, like i thought the karaoke at the texas bar was fun, sure, but it didn’t have the party feel that made that scene in the book so fun, along with the groups blending to become fast friends just would’ve been great.

now…richards! he was such a non-person in the movie. obviously i don’t care one bit to hear about him or his platform or whatever it was we see in the book, but by leaving him and not having the trail lead to him regarding the emails makes it very dull and just a very thinly veiled question of ‘whodunnit’ because it’s implied that it’s the journalist but god knows how he got those or why or how he knew etc. not to mention the whole predator arc which would’ve been SO INTERESTING to explore and the exclusion of luna in order to tell that story will make me mad forever. but hey, can’t have twelve plot points in a movie!

i also didn’t really appreciate the erasure of alex’s bi awakening. i really loved how in the book he had to take some time to think through his sexuality and figure out where he stood (and nora using her analyst brain to help him with percentages would’ve been such a wonderful moment to replace that scene in the office, which was okay but could’ve been better). it was such an interesting time to read about, especially the call w liam, that i would’ve liked to see it, but i mean some things had to be cut, and in the end i mean i guess it wasn’t about their sexualities, it was about the people.

now that i’ve mentioned At Length some of my issues, i have to give the movie props for their text-to-screen adaptation of the texts between henry and alex. like having henry walking around the room narrating those texts, or being in bed with alex while they’re on the phone? such a fantastic move, it was awesome and i love how well it worked. i was wondering how they were going to do it with so much of their relationship being via text or email (and i wish they’d had more of the emails in there, like some quotes or some lines like ‘see attached bibliography[….]’)

i also thought sending alex to texas was a nice touch, i loved seeing him campaigning for his mom and helping to register voters and get to make a change in his home state. that was a nice addition that the book didn’t have.

and i know this is me getting all picky about a movie that is essentially supposed to be a love story, condensing a 400 page book into a 2 hour movie is hard, i wouldn’t want to do it, couldn’t do it, but i just think that there are some little changes, such as giving the girls a personality, that could’ve been made.

i might edit this as i think of more, i know there were some others but they’ve escaped my brain. hope this made sense, i read the book again a few days ago and just finished the movie so all the discrepancies are Jumping at me rn :)

my sister sent me the instagram account of one of the most cringe inducing people i have ever seen. one of those guys who made having a beard their whole personality

basically it is an american dude, calling himself ‘modern viking’, and calling being viking a ‘lifestyle’

he is also ‘pagan’, but it is very obvious that he just replaced the chrisitian god with Odin and jesus with Thor

he has a beard and the history tv viking hair, and has videos of himself going to renfairs in machine made, cotton and inaccurate ‘viking costumes’, and doing the horrible history viking accent, which is like MILES away from the accent any scandinavian has when talking english, but i guess a danish hot-potato-in-mouth or norwegian sing-sing accent were not sexy enough

so all that is cringe already, but then he had a video on his page, talking about paganism and ‘how to become a pagan’

i have a bit of an issue with just ‘deciding to become a norse pagan’ because like.. idk, for me, as a lover of all folklore, Instarted to read the myths and sagas out of general interest and found that it made just a lot of sense to me, and a lot of stuff started to happen that confirmed it for me, so that now i am at a point where i can feel the gods and their influence. I always find it weird if people decide out of the blue to become pagan. I was a 100% convinced atheist since i was 7 years old, i did not go into norse myth with any intention of changing my believes

anyway, i digress. so he has this video, where he is like ‘oh yes read the edda, read the havamal (the havamal is in the edda, so point 2 was useless)” and then he was like ‘learn the RUNES! learn the writing of paganism” (which is first of all wrong because runes in scandinavia were even used wildly after the christianisation, with runes carved into the oldest stave churches, but again i digress) but then this guy proceeds to show bloody ELDER FUTHARK RUNES asdhahfhsa WHICH WERE USED WAAAAAYYY BEFORE THE VIKING AGE

quickly proved himself to have absolutely no idea what he was talking about

it is cool to learn the runes and try to understand them and the original texts we find on runestones and carved into houses etc, but like use bloody younger futhark, that are the correct runes if you are looking at late viking age and norse religion which is what is represented in the eddas

sorry i have no patience for people like this. he makes fun of people (other pagans and scandinavians who find his ‘modern viking’ stuff stupid), and acting as if he is the authority of defining what viking means, just because there is a football club named like it and some brands using ‘viking’ (yes he has a video where this is his reasoning)

90% of the people in the viking age were not vikings. vikings were basically pirates. there was piracy in scandinavia also well before the viking age, we have finds of them. a lot of ‘vikings’ were just settlers who wanted to have a nicer home because norway, as much as i love it, is cold and shit and the earth is frozen most of the year, like these people went to north england and thought it was the most amazing land ever, imagine how shit norway was. they were starving, that is why they went there. the raiding was part of their culture, but not a big one, like they did not call themselves viking

i could rant about that for hours. same with those christian-pagans who dont shed their christian believes and just replace stuff with norse things. Hel is not Hell, Hel is actually a nice place, and Valhalla is not the only good afterlife, but that does not go into their small brains

I have a whole lot of hobbies/interests which are anime/manga, gaming, writing, art(drawing, painting, pottery and digital art and more), fashion, DIY, cosplaying, social media, learning new languages (Japanese and Spanish), dancing, singing, cooking, cats, musicals, hanging out with friends, making music/listening to music, hotels, sharks, bread, and more so on

my love language is Gift Giving, Acts of Service, Quality Time and Words of Affirmation

Honestly what I would want in my partner is that they don’t mind how I talk with my speech patterns and the sound of my voice, and taht they don’t compare me to other people and they don’t act cruel much, not very strict boundaries but as long as they live and respect me then there’s nothing to worry about

⋆｡ﾟ☁︎｡⋆｡ﾟ☾ ﾟ｡⋆ sushang was, at first glance, probably the least likely to be the type who'd jump on the same chaotic antics as you. given that she's training to be a respectable cloud knight, she seemed like the kind of person who would rather keep things straight and proper, but that definitely was not the case. she finds you very interesting and befriended you almost immediately. she's the type who also likes to ramble a lot about her day, so expect a lot of back-and-forth talk between the both of you! the both of you take turns with the dynamic of "talks a lot / listens a lot". sushang also seems to be the type who would engage in a playful banter with you outside of her duty. as a partner, sushang is very loyal; she probably acts most like a golden retriever around you: eager to cheer you up and help you out in any way. it's a common occurrence that the both of you hype each other up and jump up and down. though she can seem a little naive at times, often ending up misunderstanding some things, she's a very honest person and definitely demonstrates her affections through acts of service. she likes helping people out, but she places you at the top of her priority list. did i mention that she really loves your sense of fashion? sushang even ropes you into a shopping spree on one of her days off duty just to hear you talk about your fashion style, your choice in clothes, and take notes. sushang knows how it feels to get chastised constantly, so she never tells you off when you continuously ramble on and on.

⋆｡ﾟ☁︎｡⋆｡ﾟ☾ ﾟ｡⋆ jiro was not the type to fuss himself over crushes, but boy does he crush over you hard. it's a funny scenario because you always seemed to glow whenever you're in your element, rambling about that new interest you had just cultivated. jiro is just a hopeless idiot, that he actually ends up approaching ichiro on what he should do. for a rather straightforward guy, he stumbles on his words when talking to you — which amuses saburo to no end, but the both of you end up having a really tight friendship, so ha, jiro wins the roulette of life for once. as a partner, jiro is the type of guy that's like "actions speak louder than words". he's a little slow when it came to all these romance stuff, considering that you're likely the first partner that he's ever been with, but he does his very best to treat you with the most care and respect ever. jiro likes hearing you talk about your day as he finishes up his homework, before the both of you decide to go on an after school hangout. he also idolizes his older brother, so at some point, expect that he probably would imitate the bravado of ichiro to impress you, but he realizes that it would probably be the best to stick to being himself. one of your common dates is to the arcade, where the both of you engage in a lot of friendly banter. jiro has the worst luck so he always gets beaten by you, but he'd go to the arcades every day with you if he could. if the both of you are too busy to head to the arcade, he invites you to the yamada residence and you guys play video games together.

⋆｡ﾟ☁︎｡⋆｡ﾟ☾ ﾟ｡⋆ ace found you to be quite similar to him, so it was a quick first meeting where the both of you hit off almost immediately. cue riddle just groaning because now he has to deal with two people who acted like trappola. both of you would definitely banter ... like a lot. ace likes you very much, but it takes him time to actually realize the extent of his feelings. like ... this guy would probably say something like "haha, yeah, i'd love to hold joey's hand just so he won't get lost in the crowd" and every member of heartslabyul is just wondering how realization hasn't hit him yet. he feels so comfortable with you but when he does realize, ace starts acting more bashful and nervous around you because it's a new thing to him! as a partner, ace is someone who would make each day an exhilarating surprise. expect your dates to be very different from the previous; he likes setting the bar high and even higher, just as a way to show how much you mean to him. since he's also part of the basketball club, a scenario of ace dedicating a shot to you definitely happened. something along the lines of "this one's for you" with a wink, before completely missing the shot like the idiot he is, but the thought is there! ace makes sure to spend a lot of quality time with you when he can; he's not the best person to rely on in helping you with your work, but he'd probably crack the worst jokes so that you wouldn't feel stressed about finishing your daily tasks. the both of you would also walk around the halls of nrc after class, just catching up on each other's days.

After reading your recent posts about wanting to distance yourself from homestuck eventually makes me feel bad too send asks because it means more homestuck is being streamlined to you

About a year ago i dropped homestuck after losing interest once again (this happens on and off) and only got into it recently because i currently can't really play video games at the moment so i ended up returning to homestuck. I think a big reason why i can get back into it so easily is because its FREE all you need is an internet connection and you get the massive amount of content from the comic and fandom, there's just soo much too engaged with even if it's not all good. Despite all my problems with Homestuck i still do like it but one thing i wish is What Pumpkin would just let it go, HS2 and Hiveswap are dumpster fires. It feels like they're milking a dead cow, this series would be better off if the poor decision making stopped at the comic itself. I just want it to be left untouched by a company and have it be supported by the love of the fanbase. I'm homestucked out but i like the character enough and shipping them as well will probably keep me hooked for awhile.

I guess I'll throw in what i was originally going too say anyway. I think homestuck took a massive drop in writing quality after murderstuck. Like why is everyone just standing on the meteor? You guys aren't going to get more serious after all that? Was there any reason as to why no one could've texted John or Jade while separated? I genuinely don't remember there being a reason. I thought Kanaya coming back to life was stupid, the Gamzee and Terezi thing gross, Rose being an alcoholic then drunk making out with Kanaya also being gross, Karkat and Dave being bystanding asshole during all this, Wayward Vagabond being practically a stuffed animal, like what is this? After murderstuck you could definitely feel the decline but there where some decent moments spread out afterwards with Caliborn being the main one stealing the show. I think Hussie really liked Caliborn, you can tell he had so much fun writing him. I like to believe Hussie went wild with Caliborn because he could get away with all the edgy stupid stuff with him because he's a villain, Hussie had obviously gave into the demands of the fans and i think even he got tired of it, Caliborn was the perfect blank slate for him to have some real freedom in writing again, Caliborns character is really in line with Hussies older sense of humor. Despite still giving into demands every other time, Caliborn got too be want Hussie actually wanted. Oooh Caliborn how you almost saved Homestuck, at least you get to be the best character in the end.

It's fine to still send asks about Homestuck here. Moving on doesn't happen overnight and I'm often sticking around more to speak out about the flaws. From the series itself, the fandom, or the current culture that surrounds it. It can be applied to other groups like those who like anime, comics, video games, etc. Homestuck is just one niche I focus on because I'm familiar with it. There are many other people online that talk about these similar topics that do it better than I ever could. But I agree that WhatPumpkin should just let the base webcomic end just there. No need to focus more on Epilogues, Homestuck^2, or Homestuck Beyond Canon. Let people interpret their own endings. Homestuck may not have been able to leave a mark in media history like what Undertale or FNAF did, but it's better to let it end there as it is. The story really felt going down after Murderstuck. Cascade was probably the only greatest thing left behind. Then Act 6 kicked in. There are many plot holes and questions to be raised about it. From things like why can't Dave/Rose or the other living trolls on the meteor use Trollian or any of their communication devices like they had before? There's nothing said about their travel to the Alpha Session will block communication between the two parties. I hate how Dave and Karkat stood on the sidelines as Rose/Kanaya and Gamzee/Terezi go through hell with their problems. Why wasn't Wayward Vagabond doing more to try and communicate with the others? Can Town and being a mayor is his dream, but we have seen him become a leader of his own to his own people. WV had communicate with John to act as his Exile, so why not the same with Dave, Rose, and the other living trolls? Where was he when the others went into the Dream Bubbles? Carapacians are not allowed there? Is still on the meteor to 'protect' the base? Was that the only time they left him alone like he was some housepet? Wouldn't it be better to have Wayward Vagabond that's now revived, stay on the Prospitian ship that John and Jade were on so that they could be with Dave and Rose? Wayward Vagabond would have a better time to try and get all the Carapacians to be ready when they arrived in the Alpha session. Where were the Carapacians by Post Retcon and Collide? By Post Retcon, the ones on the Prospitian ship and those with Roxy should be alive by then. Casey also was there to summon undead consorts during Jake vs The Felt fight. Wouldn't that mean the other consorts were still there Prospitian ship that John and Jade were on, could have joined the battle? There are too many plot holes and vague answers still around because of Act 6 and Post Retcon that it makes people question the quality and how the story was leading up to this. I do believe as well that Caliborn was the only way for Hussie to let himself use his old edgey humor. Dave and Dirk were there, but those two had their character development and he needed another being to stand in his place. Other characters that fit would have been dead and he had to come with some bullshit reason to bring them back. So it's better to make an original OC than to reuse another character. Caliborn really was the best as he really made lots of changeups and excitement to the series. If not only in narrative standpoint, but also in meta in the sense that he was able to change the website readers would be on. You had to be there with old flash to see him banging on the console that the link and panel you were trying to read, shook with every hit and everything gets scrambled and falling apart. Calliope hasn't done anything like that despite that we are suppose to root for her as the good guy that will join the heroes. Caliborn is just that amazing. Act 6 may have been carried by people like Dirk and Roxy, but Caliborn flexed it up high like Atlas did with the World.

Magic System Inspiration Tag

Thank you @autumnalwalker for the tag! See their post here. (It was such a fun read, def check it out!)

Tagging @captain-kraken @mariahwritesstuff and anyone else that wants to share more about their magic systems!

Rules: List the inspiration(s) for your WIP's magic system and, if you want, go into detail.

I will admit that I dragged my feet on this one mostly because my magic system is quite baby and tends to morph as I write it. I call As A Stranger Or A Friend's magic system "medium" magic because I don't feel like it falls strictly into the camp of "hard" or "soft" (borrows aspects from both systems).

I'll list the general aspects about the magic system in AASOAF and the inspiration/author's notes for each one below the cut! There are a lot more specific magics/rules that apply to particular characters, but some are spoilers, so I won't cover those here hehe.

Magic, on the whole, is not forbidden/outlawed; however, there are some schools of magic that are more frowned upon than others, which depending on the group/faction, may be considered taboo.

In AASOAF, magic is more like a "liveness" marker, so anything living has the ability to channel magic. By that principle, it makes no sense to outlaw it because it would basically be like trying to outlaw breathing haha.

The inspiration/concept for this comes from Divinity Original Sin II wherein all being have something called Source, a finite amount of lifeforce (unless you're Godwoken then the rules are a little different). In DOSII, when beings are drained of this, they die.

That's not exactly how it works in AASOAF, in the sense that magic can't be drained from an individual, but there is a cost to using and relying on magic. The effect this has on the individual varies based on their constitution (the general term, not talking about CON pts like in DnD) and the type of magic they practice. This is where the frowned upon schools come into play, generally referred to as "black magic". These magics leave physical marks on the user's body and eventually take limbs, much like frostbite would (hence the name black magic).

Evidence of this can be seen on Fay's hands and wrists, which over time have blackened to the color of ink due to her heavy reliance on it. Other markers of this are permanent rune etchings on the user. Runes are ephemeral in AASOAF so having one stick around isn't a good sign.

Magic isn't considered to be a violent force (note, this doesn't mean it can't be used to commit acts of violence)

This one has a lot of not inspirations haha, too many to list tbh (video games, web comics, shows, movies etc) but I've never liked that magic, something that to some degree or another is not completely understood, would be so plainly characterized as "violent". And in the world of AASOAF, when it is part of what makes up all living beings, it just wouldn't make sense to deem it as such. As a note, I never mention this explicitly in the text (ie, a character never explains it to the reader) this is intentional, to convey that magic is ubiquitous, expected, and very much a part of daily life.

There are different types of magic: elemental, spatial, healing, and psychic, to name a few.

Direct inspiration for this is X-Men and Naruto haha. I LOVE the variety of mutant powers and jutsus the different characters of those series have! One of my ALL TIME favorite things is getting to see those really epic battle scenes where characters can combine/complement each other's abilities! They always give me goosebumps and anytime I develop characters it's something I take into consideration. It's very creatively fulfilling for me and also makes for some really interesting scenes, even if the abilities themselves are not super powerful/cool-looking. Also from a plotting standpoint, it makes sense (to me) to limit the abilities a character has otherwise they end up OP and there is no fun in that.

The methods of 'expanding' magic can vary.

In AASOAF, individuals are all born with the ability to channel magic, but like any ability (think strength, endurance, etc) it starts at a base level and can be honed, in this case through a mechanism called Expansion.

The base level that individuals are born with varies, so some people have a very high base, like Priestesses of Shanta and Dreamers. Others have a very low base, like IRL people. Those who have a low base will get minor bursts of it here and there, often cited as feeling like goosebumps or the sensation like someone is watching them.

Regarding the concept of Expansion, this comes directly from my own experiences with weightlifting, running, and yoga as well as skill trees like the ones in Skyrim! Basically, to get stronger, to run farther, to be more flexible, you need to put in consistent practice and progressively push yourself just outside of your comfort zone (ie to failure). So, for individuals who have a high base, they will need more complicated training/practice to Expand, while individuals who have a low base might need a lot less and will see drastic leaps in improvement.

However, there is a way to cheat the system, via a mechanism called Consumption. This can occur through worship, pacts, or rituals in service to higher beings. These can be gods, spirits, demons, and special beings called Patrons/Matrons. That said, Consumption, like black magic, comes with costly side effects.

hi hello i have some thoughts here are some thoughts

in terms of timeline this is really quite impossible I think but wow Henry could so easily fall into the category of sailor boy from the port who gets flirted with and actually a plot of him sticking his stupid impulsive self into the middle of an unhappy marriage has been a little bit on my wishlist for a bit now simply because I realized he's perfectly that brand of unwise but again with th. the timelines ;dlkfjg;ldkjfg I don't know how far either of us is willing to bend on the front of being attached to Lottie's Jack at various points in his life but gosh if that were not the case here I would be flinging this full force instead of this sideways pitch

timelines and continuous universe held in mind, then, I wonder how far into her life you've planned? Henry's definitely frequenter of many a pirate port and he's served on more than one ship in his life -and in the alt main, continues to do so- so flinging the two of them onto a crew could work? The main throughline of the alt main verse is that Henry is chasing other myths, legends, etc. around, so there's a lot of potentional to send them after the same treasure or trove or etc. where he'd be acting as the sort of ...consult (and ship hand, but y'know) but then also sticking them in close quarters for an extended time right, with the added bonus of them being two people who know veeeeeeeerrrrryyyyy different sides of Jack. That might be interesting

alternatively and in the name of shaking the timeline grief: we could throw them both Modern and have them meet strangers-cross-paths-while-both-traveling style. Henry would be out and about for the sake of adventure and his little travel journal publication, and maybe Sera is off in some remote corner of the world trying to buy time before reemerging in the public eye to do damage control on her reputation? This is definitely more plot than dynamic I have no idea where it would go but it might be fun to toss them into some nonsense- they get stuck in said small out of the way place because of natural disaster? Keep running into each other at random and figure, fuck it, what if we sit down and talk since we've been traveling parallel for three cities, now? He knows all the cool wild places where weird and magical(-feeling) things happen, and maybe he wanted to do something new with his writing project thing so he said "give me your perspective" and at first she's suspicious because she's famous and shit but he genuinely has not one clue about that and just plucked her from a crowd of tourists at random. This low key sounds like a pitch for a romcom, I'm realizing, but that was not the intention I just think Henry+befriending people via being weird and wild and upfront is fun

maybe this is cheating I don't know but I have a mermaid OC on my multi (@talesgolden) who is ...not completely adverse to mankind but isn't blindly trusting either and right this very second I have no idea what could have brought them together, exactly, but I do know Lír is hiding from some things going on in the sea and could have taken to land, that's a distinct possibility. And then there, even on land, she'd have a connection to the tides in both a literal body-of-water fashion as well as a "tides of fate" fashion and I think she would make for a very cool ally, a sort of soothsayer type of person Sera calls on, maybe? To plan her mischief so it falls favorably in with the machinations of the world already going on and are promised more success. Also someone with uncanny charm (that is actually siren song) on your team seems like it'd be favorable.

also on the multi I have an oc named Violet who doesn't technically have an 18th century/potc verse right now but very easily could and she'd be a younger there than she is in her main verse and I think they could maybe have something of a teacher/protegee relationship, if that would be something you're interested in? actually I would even go so far with this one to loop Lottie in and have Vi be a girl from Giselle's bawdy house who happened to show a lot of promise.... oh I want this so bad actually wait @immobiliter c'mere i want ur thoughts on this one too

skskssk of course! i always love receiving asks. thank you yiyi!

to be 100% honest with you all, I very much projected like most authors and I kind of just go with the flow.

but for fics that i like to make a bit more intricate, like the iso no awabi series and another upcoming fic i'm writing, i like to use a bit more than just "winging it"

so first, i like to set the plot. who are the characters, what's happening, how do the interact with each other, do they like each other etc. of course, this can change any time throughout your fic so never be afraid to change it up a bit

i also like to try to have the solution to any conflict and a way to solve the conflict, so there's 100% a lot of worldbuilding, which isn't all that fun until you put the fic out.

also, something new i've been doing, i write scenes for parts of my fic i know will be there and then as i'm writing, just slot it in. i've gone from 10 to 4 to 2 and back to 4 docs right now for my upcoming fic, so i'm going a little crazy with it sksksk

and sometimes a beta works, but are often not for everyone, so i don't recommend if you're new to writing and don't want to feel like you're being torn down because i personally like my betas harsh and to the point but some people don't like that. so if you do get a beta, make sure you set clear boundaries

also! it's fun to have little sticky notes of extra stuff you want to include in your fic just to make it seem not as stale or dark i guess, unless that's what you were going for

as for my dialogue, i try not to use big words. sometimes, the urge to use juxtaposing comes across me but i tend to operate by assuming that someone reading this might not be a native english speaker and i stray from uncommon words. i also try to make it feel like an actual conversation, and i've had @holyhyacinths (WHO COPIED MY AESTHETIC) act out scenes with me. or talking to yourself, which is kind of weird

i also have a great writing support system in the perpollo server, and i also enjoy complaining about how hard writing is to @sappho-of-space and @whoreofdixnysus or sometimes just for an extra writing boost

also, never be afraid to take inspo from other texts and fics. there's this one fic, i really like their characterization of one character so i tend to use their interpretation of that character in my writing. although, it can sometimes veer too close to plagiarism so be careful!

bonus! i'm very excited to be working on my ancient greek perpollo fic that has recently undergone a title change. it's gone from arabian nights to death, suits you dear sir. i'm having a shit ton of fun and there is a lot of research and i will be obnoxious with the linking for this fic, but it is a lot of fun

as for upcoming wip, i'm really excited for is the ao3 author perpollo trope i have planned, a few harry potter things, and a reboot of one of my first fics ever posted.

and honorary mention, the final installment of iso no awabi. it's kind of weird that it's coming to and end tbh, but you all have been so supportive.

I will thread a thread into the ground, I am so sorry. It can last as long as needed to be very fun. Though, I know there is a time where the thread does need to end, I'm comfortable with them going on for a while, too. The crazy thing about long threads is that the in-rp time period is often much shorter than how long it takes to do it irl, lmao. So, generally a long thread just means a solid hour long conversation. That's fine with me!

3] roleplaying with yourself?

NOT REAL GOOD AT THAT, i'LL BE HONEST! It's probably the biggest reason I don't do a lot of solo-writing that involves many POVs. I get to feeling awkward when I RP more than one of my own characters. Particularly if the characters are talking/interacting to each other rather than mostly with your character. Sometimes I can pull it off and a lot of the time I can, but I always feel like I'm stilted or poor at doing so regardless of other's opinions. I don't know. However, the matter of other people doing that? I'm okay with it. Sometimes it takes a little kick start to get others involved and if that takes a little inter-self-character interaction? Go for it. I'm just not so good at it, I feel. That being said, I do intertwine my character's histories and backstories for depth of world sort of things. Like Al's and Dev's relationship and how Lucifer and Devang interact and how Lucifer and Jericho interact and how Roka and Viktor interacted--so on and so forth. Just writing/RPing them together can make me stumble.

14] icons?

Icons can be EXTREMELY fun. They're a unique and creative thing that only Tumblr has done so far, to my knowledge. They can also help me remember how to narrate a particular expression or give me an emotional tone. As well as be interesting decoration. Sometimes I wish I had more patience and skill for making icons of my characters, they'd add some nice enrichment here and there. However, they are not necessary. They don't make one writer better than the other. They certainly are not required. I'm not fond of people that act like it's icons/fancy text/etc. or nothing. That's silly. It's silly and not actually a boost to lackluster writing. It is, however, fun, as I said. So if you find joy? Do it. But don't act like it's an elitist standard for good writing. It's the opposite. It's a garnish! Lovely and pretty and fun to look at! But it's not the meat and potatoes that make for good RP. Not by a long shot.

15] animated icons?

Same as regular icons in my opinion. Gifs, though? Just as much of a chef kiss kind of garnish at the right times! God, they can be so good. Some of my partners have excellent sense of timing for these.

[ cherry ] what is one thing you love about yourself?

I already answered this but I forced you to answer this question, so it's only fair that I answer it with another, different answer here as well. It feels a little weird since I'm basically talking about myself in this hobby as well, but I think I'm pretty creative. I've always loved making up stories and characters and writing, and I get so much joy out of making things. I'm not good with my hands, I'm not crafty, and I can't make visual art or music or anything, but I just really love creating things and for better or worse, I love putting my stamp on something.

Like, as an example, I've been running this D&D campaign for about a year and a half now, and it's a published adventure, so you buy the book, and you're supposed to be able to run it with very little prep work, just like, read the book and do what it says... BUT instead of that, I got a full text file, went through it for months, added a bunch of new stuff, changed a bunch of stuff I hated, made new monsters and items, found new maps to use, made a bunch of custom things that I knew my friends would like, etc. Even in that scenario where it was the most "you don't have to do any extra work, you can just run it out of the book," I was so excited and inspired to add my own stuff, and I'm really proud of how it all turned out, I genuinely think I made a lot of improvements, and found a lot of places where I could make the game more interesting and more fun for myself and my friends.

I don't always have the energy, motivation, or focus required to act on it, that's a whole separate issue, but the fact that I have that drive to create things, and that I'm able to have so much fun and get so much fulfillment and joy out of that, is something that I'm really happy about and proud of myself for.

[ amber ] which is your favorite season? why?

Winter for sure. I like rain and snow, I like cold temperatures a lot better than hot ones, I like being warmed up by hot chocolate or tea or coffee, I like wearing layers. Obviously holidays can be busy and crazy, but aside from that, it feels like such a calm season for me, sit by a window and play a game or read a book, maybe have a fire going if it's cold. Even the holidays I like, when they're less manic and more just small-scale and focused on family and friends.

I also like that there's not always a huge expectation of going out all the time. I don't mind going out places, but I'm an introvert and I prefer staying in more often than not. Winter is a season that has fewer things like "let's go to the beach," or "let's go to the park," or whatever. When I lived abroad, we had such long winters, first snowfall was usually in October and the snow kept up through March, and I know a lot of people were gloomy and weighed down by it, but I miss those long winters just sitting in my house and talking on Skype (shows how long ago this was) with friends, or spending a week at a friend's place just cooking together and watching anime and playing Persona 5 for eight hours a day and huddling under a kotatsu.

Hahaha I feel like I've answered this question a few times across various memes and it's always interesting to come at it from a different angle. Maybe to try and sum it up though... I like characters that have been thrown outside of their comfort zone, and have to navigate that uncomfortable feeling and decide for themselves what they want. I also like characters who have something to say about identity and that have some conflict between various selves. I also also like characters that have some prickliness and aren't immediately easy to get close to, but who have a lot of hidden warmth and loyalty for people who DO get beyond that outer shell.

At the risk of overcomplicating things, I just like writing characters that just have a lot of weird facets and considerations. With someone like Shinobu, for example, I try not to make it too self-indulgent or too navel-gazey, but a lot of times she is involved in a scene it's like, what she's saying, her mental response to her own words and actions, her response to THAT response, her thoughts about perception and how things might be taken, her willingness to play a role but also the small places to rebel against that role or carve out some tiny piece for herself. There's a lot going on. I wouldn't want to be like "I try to write characters like real people" because I'm still playing with silly anime toys, and psychological hyperrealism isn't my ultimate goal, but I like to have a good amount of depth and weight to a character and their worldview and their story, because it gives me so many threads to tug on while writing.

[ mauve ] give one random headcanon about your muse / one of your muses.

Random headcanon 1: Shinobu, Yi-Chun, and Kiyomi are the only main anime-type characters that can legally drive. Yi-Chun got her Taiwanese driver's license at 18, and didn't have to take a test to obtain a Japanese license, due to an agreement between Taiwan and Japan (just as well - the Japanese driving test is HARD). She rents a car. Shinobu got a moped license at age 16 to run errands for their father, at his insistence, and got a driver's license at 18 for the same reason, and also to go to their competitions. She doesn't have a car/moped of her own, but she is street-legal. Kiyomi has a moped license, but not a driver's license, and her moped was a "please don't be mad" peace offering gift from her parents after they told her they were moving abroad and she needed to move across the country for her final year of high school.

Izumi is too young to drive anything other than a moped and isn't so interested, Rio has NO intention of ever learning to drive (and is also too young for a car), Tsubasa prefers skating and also has vision issues, Kousuke never learned, and Anzu hasn't ever had a reason to learn. Maki has almost certainly driven but she definitely doesn't have a license. If you see Maki on a bike or in a car, she is either immediately pre- or immediately post-murder.

Random headcanon 2: Rapid fire, everyone's favorite school subjects. Rio: Science Izumi: Music (or Math if that's not an acceptable pick) Tsubasa: PE, if they have to choose. Shinobu: Language/Literature Anzu: Drama (or History if that's not an acceptable pick) Yi-Chun: PE Kousuke: History Kiyomi: Language/Literature Maki: She's not picky. Science maybe, or PE. Whatever.

1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?

I write in Times New Roman! I used to write in Georgia and Garamond and once wrote in Papyrus (insert meme here) a long time ago because 13 year old me thought it fit the fantasy-aesthetic. But I like Times best.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

Oh man just...the euphoria of the words flowing without any struggle or uncertainty, when you stop being aware of the actual act of writing and you are just there, and it's happening and the world disappears! This...mostly happens when I'm rereading something actually. Usually after some time from it, so that I'm not in nitpicking-editor mode and am just in 'what did I write again? oh wow this is pretty good—where's the rest of it >:[" mode. I would say the ultimate joy is having my work read and loved, especially when people get excited about it or comment about favourite parts of it and express curiosity about the rest of it/choices made etc.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

I've talked about LofM here so let me talk about...Oracle wip! Oracle wip is my vent wip, in a way. I conceptualized the latest version of it in a time in my life where I was full of anger and bitterness and pain and feeling very trapped (i.e. during the last couple of years lol). My characters are all either wrathful and despairing or amoral or just plain awful. It's my self-indulgent 'what if everyone was a terrible person and/or deeply unhinged in their own unique ways' wip. But! It actually comes from a very old idea I had a long time ago! (It's nearly as old as LofM, so about a decade old!)

Back then I wanted to do a YA retelling of Alice in Wonderland, and Oracle still has a lot of roots in that original idea, just....executed very differently. Back then, my AiW retelling was very generic medieval-esque fantasy YA (nothing wrong with that, of course, just not what I want to write anymore). Alice was the MC, she was a secret heir to the throne, was in hiding due to the usurpation of the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter was a dark and broody love interest, and the White Rabbit was a rival love interest and mysterious and broody. I scrapped the idea when The Looking Glass Wars was published, because my plan for it was too similar.

I'm no longer quite so miserable as I was, but I still want to have gleeful unhinged fun with this wip and I'm excited for it, and some elements of the original idea are definitely still being incorporated, with a twist!

22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?

I don't think I'm that organized at all! Mostly I just make sure each wip has its own folder so I don't lose anything. But I write bits and bobs and scenes and plans in Google docs (or on tumblr, to eventually be transferred to Docs/my site if I'm sharing it) both on my computer and my phone, as well as in various journals or any bit of paper I have on hand, to eventually be transferred to the Docs.

I used to write on Evernote, but it's become quite glitchy.

My wip folders contain documents with every version of the story I'm writing (I write chronologically, which means I always have multiple 'chapter ones', for example). I have some documents titled 'plot' or something similar for various wips, and sometimes they also have character or worldbuilding things I want to keep in mind, or issues with the story I need to work out or grapple with, or names for countries or the families of characters or minor characters etc.

Sometimes all those thing will be in separate documents each titled in such a way that I remember what each doc contains. Some documents are just scenes that didn't work that I refuse to get rid of in case I end up re-purposing them somehow, somewhere. (Never kill your darlings. Just shift them to their own doc!) Mostly all this is written in bullet points (except the actual story proper).

he really loves that he finally has someone that sees past the “tough” act and just appreciates him as a person

that also makes him really appreciate you as a person and you’re so special to him

honestly, kyotani isn’t that talkative but when he does talk it’s most likely about you!! he actually loves bringing you up in random conversations, it makes him feel like you’re there with him

for example, if he’s silent and off to the side while the team is talking and they mention your favorite movie in their conversation, kyotani will just kinda be like “oh, that’s y/n’s favorite movie” and the entire team is just ⁉️

this is actually how the team found out about you 😭 kyotani mentions you in a conversation and oikawa is just like “whos y/n” and kyotani is like “my s/o” and the team goes ballistic

(kyotani saw oikawa’s jealous reaction to him having a s/o and now makes sure to mention you whenever he can just so he can piss oikawa off)

i think kyotani’s love language is physical touch + quality time!!

for physical touch, it’s not always the obvious ones like hugs + kisses + cuddles, and i think he silently prefers to be on the receiving end, but he loves randomly touching you too

absentmindedly running his fingers through your hair or drumming his fingers on your shoulder/thighs/whatever while he does things are some of his favorite things to do <3

he also loves having you close to him while he’s walking in public places! he likes subtly touching you, like a hand pressed against the small of your back

he loves it when you run up and just hug him or give him a kiss out of nowhere. he’ll be a little startled but he’ll hold you close or kiss you back.

the first time you run up and give him a kiss after one of his games he actually tears up a little because he just feels so loved

for quality time, he absolutely loves spending time with you and he loves when you do it for him too!

when you talk he looks right at you, giving you his full attention. he loves seeing you smile and laugh and honestly starts to smile himself whenever he sees you do so

he just likes being with you. especially the quiet time together, sitting together or cuddling. he absolutely loves it when you have each other’s full attention without any distractions

being around you makes him calm down a lot, that’s why the team likes having you at practice and even at games! he’s less hot-headed and aggressive when he sees you waving at him from the side and cheering him on, you set his mind at ease :)

definitely looks towards iwaizumi for advice. if iwaizumi is in a relationship he’ll definitely look to how iwa treats his s/o when he’s looking for how to treat you

he’s terrible with words, will almost always use actions to express how much he loves you

that’s why it takes him a while to actually tell you flat out that he loves you, but when he does he means it, and gradually it gets a bit easier (he’s still so awkward about it though)

honestly a bit overprotective of you, he just would hate seeing you get hurt. most people tend to avoid you and him because of his intimidating appearance though, so it’s never that much of a problem

people (read: oikawa and yahaba) have teased him for how obsessed he is with you but he kinda just shrugs it off because he knows it’s true

you are literally his entire world, you make him so happy

walks you to school and home from school whenever he can!! especially if you stay to watch his practice

he’s a bit of a tease—not as much as someone like atsumu, for example—but he likes seeing you pout hehe

he’ll do stuff like deny your kisses, hold things above your head, or even tickle fights

one of his favorite things to do is sneak up behind you and then give you the biggest back hug ever, maybe even pick you up and spin you around if possible

speaking of hugs, aran loves hugs!! he loves giving them and receiving them, and his hugs are literally The Best. he absolutely loves hugging you and just standing there for however long you’d like

aran is a family man so expect to be invited to dinner to meet his family!! his parents love you

if you’re willing, he’ll love to come over and have dinner with your family as well! he’s honestly so polite and he even brought a little gift for them <3 he’s so polite and sweet of course he’s already won your family over

aran loves seeing you happy. that’s his main goal, he loves to see you happy. he always brings you gifts, makes funny comments, tickles you, supports your interests, showers you in affection—whatever makes you happy, he’s doing it

thats why i think his love language is physical affection + words of affirmation

i think pda and touch-wise he likes holding you or holding you close to him (if you’re comfortable!)

im talking like hugs, cuddles, sitting on his lap, arm around your shoulder

hugs/cuddles are his favorite though bc that’s when he can really hold you and bury his head in your neck and murmur soft things like “i love you” under his breath

he also likes giving you quick random kisses— a kiss on the top of the head, the cheek, the forehead, the nose, whatever

words of affirmation-wise, aran is literally your biggest support

he’s your hypeman—not to the extent where he’s like tanaka, but he’s always complimenting you and encouraging you

if you do any type of activity he’ll always be there for your actual games/meets/events/concerts/showcases/etc

he sends you these long goodnight/good morning texts and they’re full of him just encouraging you and telling you that he loves you and everything

if you’re ever feeling down he’s right there to help you through it, expressing how much he loves you

he’s touchy but he’s also very verbal, so he won’t hesitate telling you how much he loves you

he’s so so so so domestic with you without even really realizing it

like he’ll be in his house making dinner with you, and you guys are just giggling and having fun and it’ll just hit him— this is domestic. and he’ll get so soft

you make him so loved and happy and he wants to be by your side forever :(

Rouxls is Hiding Something Big: A Deltarune Theory

FORENOTE- For some needed context, it may help reading my previous Deltarune theory here for important details that I will cover in this post. (My previous theory provides notable evidence on why Gaster is indeed the “Knight” figure talked about by multiple characters in Deltarune.)

Now, this is going to sound crazy. But after much time of poring over and analyzing Deltarune, I have come to a conclusion. One that I’ve been convinced of for awhile now. Something that’s been lying right under all of our noses without many of us even realizing it. We have all been bamboozled. Hoodwinked. Tricked. Why, you may ask?

Because the comically stupid and inept Duke of Puzzles is actually... not an idiot. No, he’s the complete opposite. He is a downright mastermind.

As collective players, we are all falling into the same trap once again. Putting faith into a character’s preconceived personality !

When their true personality turns out the complete opposite of what we expected...

It is here, my evidence for this claim begins—and we delve into the true identity of Rouxls Kaard. Buckle up everyone, cause this one’s gonna be a fun ride. 👀

So, to spill the beans up front, and get it over with. I believe Rouxls Kaards identity... is none other than W.D. Gaster in disguise.

Now. I didn’t immediately become invested in this theory—I was skeptical at first like everyone else. But, once I began examining Deltarune and all of its characters a bit closer...things weren’t exactly adding up about the Duke of Puzzles.

Point #1: Anagrams

I initially began to become suspicious of Rouxls Kaard because of his odd name. Sure, it is a play on the words of the term, “Rules card”. But it is spelt in such a peculiar way. If it were just simply a play on words, I think that there would be a much better way of going about spelling it rather than just jumbling a bunch of random letters together. There is a very intriguing reddit post found here that goes more into depth about his name that ties well into my theory. The thing that stood out to me in particular, is that Rouxls’s name is actually also an anagram for “A Dark Soul RX”, (with the left over RX typically being used in terms relating to doctors/medicine.) Not only is Gaster a Doctor, but he’s also always associated with darkness and the research of souls. Toby loves his anagrams—so I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if this was intentional. But it doesn’t end there.

I’ve noticed that Toby Fox has a tendency to tease certain things about his games through merch. And wouldn’t you know it—he has in fact, a particular item on fangamer of a “dark heart.” One which description describes the Angel’s Prophecy. Hm...

But let’s back on track onto my second observation, shall we?

Point #2: The Physical Resemblance to Gaster

Now, there seems to be some interesting foreshadowing related to inverted colors in Deltarune. Before Ralsei takes his hat off, he appears black. But once he takes his hat off, voila, his colors are inverted, and he is revealed to actually be a white goat highly resembling Asriel.

In addition, the entire Dark World is literally just. An inverted version of a normal world.

The Dark World could have hypothetically been the created world/experiment that Gaster had fallen into in the first place. After all, his experiment had to do with “darkness”, and “negative” photons--AKA the Dark Fountains, and the negatively/inverted landscapes of the Dark World.

And how does Rouxls Kaard appear inverted anyways? Well, he looks like THIS.

He even has the strange dangling lip thing—which another character said to directly resemble Gaster, Seam, has as well:

In addition, if you look at Rouxls’ text-box profile very closely, his eye colors are actually mismatched which is a rather interesting detail!

Point # 3: His Accent is Extremely put on.

I think anybody that has read any sort of Shakespearean/Old English writing, can instantly realize that Rouxls is as bad as imitating an Old English accent as a high-schooler reading Hamlet for the first time. Rouxls absolutely butchers it. He practically adds eth, and est at the end of any word he chooses, and calls the job done. What is even more interesting though, is when he gets nervous or panicked, he drops the act all together and talks normally.

Point #4: He is Pretending to be Dumb; His Puzzles are Actually Impressive!

I found it intriguing how there are countless puzzle traps in all the forest areas and in the Card Castle prison that were actually very well done. You have to flip the spades, diamonds, hearts, etc to unlock doors, and open secret chests. They require a decent amount of thinking skills, and are actually competent. But who made them?? Oddly enough if you observe one of them in the forest areas, it appears that Rouxls Kaard vandalized one of the puzzles to make it harder for the player to beat it—which further implies that he actually indeed made those puzzles himself. This shows that Rouxls is much more competent than only being able to make a single box shove puzzle that is comically easy. Where else do we see a place full of plenty of rather well made puzzles + traps seen? All throughout the Core in Undertale—a place which Gaster himself created!

Point #5: Rouxls IS Aware the World is a Game--AKA DON’T FORGET TO READ NPC DIALOGUE FOLKS!

I think it is well aware by now that Rouxls likely wants us as the players to underestimate him--and deem him a fool so we wouldn’t bat an eye at what he’s actually up to. But the most biggest give away to this is something that I have surprisingly seen no one mention at all. And oh boy, it is the most damning evidence that Rouxls is no idiot to be trifled with.

To the left of Seam’s shop, there can be found a little group of former puzzle-makers that used to live at Card Castle, until they were fired and replaced with Rouxls Kaard. They are now all out of a job, and are just barely scraping by since the Spade King didn’t give them any severance pay. However, Rouxls Kaard offered them a way to get money--by selling the tutorials he made.

These tutorials go over TP, stats, information about Susie, Ralsei, and Kris. Rouxls Kaard has never once met any of the players yet--and he knows everything about them. He knows about stats. He knows the world is a game.

HOW??

In addition, when you talk to Rouxls in his shop, he calls you three the Heroes of Legend. He is well aware of the Angel’s Prophecy. He knows.

Whenever any character in the world of Undertale & Deltarune knows that the world is a game, it is an instant red-flag. It goes to show that they know much more than they let on. Flowey and Sans are big examples of this in Undertale. Pure hearted, dorky idiots that we trust earlier in the game--but wind up seeing the real side of them later on.

...So why should we treat Rouxls any differently?

Point #6: The “Control Crown”

Something that I immediately thought was kind of weird, was the fact that Rouxls Kaard was able to control the K. Round with a “Control Crown” device. If he is so stupid, how was he able to create a full on mechanical device that can brainwash a life-form into being violent/cause it to triple in size?! That is genius material right there!

But things start to take on a much darker side when you begin to look at the subtext of this realization, which I will get to in a moment...

First of all, Seam claimed these exact words.

The remaining king was the Spade King-- as the King of Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs are seen to be locked up in the Dungeon. Therefore, the Spade King put the Knight, and his strange son into power. IF it were the Spade King in power, the dialogue box WOULD have said “himself”. Therefore, the Knight, and his strange son were put in place to control the kingdom. And who are they?

Gaster/Rouxls Kaard, and Lancer.

Evidence to back this up:

Lancer calls Rouxls his “Lesser Dad”. And Rouxls calls Lancer, his Strange little darling/son.

The Spade King is not in charge. During his boss-fight, he states that he obeys the word of the Knight.

If you observe more of Lancer’s dialogue in the scene right before the gang enters Card Castle, he states that his dad, (Spade King), recently forced his troops to listen to Lancer instead. Therefore, Lancer is by all respects actually second in command to the Knight.

One of Rouxls main interests is...Lawmaking. Even though he is just supposedly an innocent Duke of Puzzles.

Another one of Rouxls main interests is...Cages, and long strolls in the dungeon...

There are innocent puzzle-makers locked up in the Prison who are terrified--they were arrested for the simple act of making a puzzle without a license. HM, I wonder who could have possibly locked them up? *Wink wink nudge nudge*

And what ties this all together, is perhaps the most obscure, tiniest detail that no one would have likely observed on a first play-through. If you go to the first floor of Card Castle and click the description tablet next to the elevator to the Prison, it claims that the Prison used to just be a Basement Which Just Happened to Have a Lot of Cages. This is backed up by the caged animals in the basement, who say that they miss the “good old days” when they used to be the only ones there in cages, and not a bunch of people behind bars.

In summary, Rouxls is locking up a bunch of innocent people, and playing nice to our faces. He IS the knight. And he is not to be underestimated.

Point #7: Rouxls’ Plan is Already Set in Place

The part where this theory gets a little dark, ties back to my mentioning of the control crown earlier.

If you observe the throne room, it looks like it was recently torn apart in a sort of...conflict.

Why was the Spade King the only king left un-caged to begin with? Why wasn’t he locked up too?

Well...Rouxls Kaard needed someone to put him in charge. But not only that—he needed a scapegoat. Someone to blame. Someone to be “The Bad Guy” for the Heroes to fight.

The Spade King...is actually innocent. He is obeying the Knight, because he is being controlled by a Control Crown. The throne room is in ruins because the Spade King likely fought against this at first, but Rouxls won and successfully put the Spade King under his command. I thought it was strange how the King was so...violent. So irredeemably evil, and even murderous toward his own son Lancer. Yes, it could be argued that this is indeed his true personality, that he is a complete, abusive jerk. But, the whole ending battle of Deltarune chapter 1 feels so...set up in a way? It feels so starkly good vs evil, black and white. Almost like a play.

And oh boy. I think I was onto something.

If you pay close attention to the fight with the Spade King, there is a brief moment at the beginning where he is completely shrouded in shadow. Except. For. His. Crown. It glows stark white in comparison to himself. Like a Chekov’s Gun if you will.

And even more interesting, in the supposed good/pacifist ending, the Spade King is locked up in Prison, the other three kings are still locked up in cages, everyone else is freed, and Rouxls and Lancer now have full control of the kingdom...

Guys. We just played right into Gaster’s hands.

Point #8: Seam Knows that Rouxls is the Knight...

The final observation that genuinely makes me convinced in this theory, is a small detail I noticed at the end of the Pacifist run of Deltarune. Once you have beaten the game, and all of the prisoners are freed, everyone comes to celebrate at Card Castle for your victory. Everyone, except for Seam. That is because Seam knows what the “Strange Knight” did to Jevil. He knows who the Strange Knight is. And he knows what the Knight’s true intentions are.

Point #9: Extra Tidbits I noticed:

When compared to the other denizens of card castle, Rouxls seems out of place. He is the one vaguely humanoid character among a bunch of card and chess themed Darkners.

His puzzle is... too easy.

Rouxls is oddly excited about overthrowing the king/taking his place.

Rouxls is well versed in calligraphy of all things. (Relation to fonts + letters.)

Rouxls “sparkles” have an odd resemblance to the shining save states...?

He makes pop culture references, such as ones seen here and here. Could just be random throwaway jokes, but often times more “aware” characters such as Sans and Papyrus are keen on breaking the fourth wall at times/making references to relate with the audience.

His hair looks strangely out of place. Especially the hairline which is really receded to an unnatural degree on the left side. It’s a wig guys...

He gets a suspiciously new position for no reason at all. In any normal situation, he would be extremely unqualified for it if he were as stupid as he makes himself out to be.

Rouxls is literally wearing armor, akin to a medieval knights.

If you pay close attention, Rouxls has a few very subtle similar speech patterns to Gaster. They both occasionally repeat words twice. They both use the words wonderful and truly a lot, etc.

When Kris and the gang beat the K. Round, Rouxls said it was just to test their abilities.

Rouxls theme has leitmotifs from Gaster’s theme.

End of discussion. Deltarune’s finale is legit going to be Gaster getting his wig snatched.

Is Gen gay-coded or just an entertainer? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ random thoughts/observations about his speech in Japanese

Warnings: LONG. mentions of gendered language and homophobic characterizations

The concept of “role language” is super important in Japanese fiction, because how a character talks can tell you a lot about their personality. Unfortunately, it’s often lost in translation because languages like English don’t have the ability to play around with formality levels, pronouns, etc as much.

Ever since I first watched the dcst anime like a year and a half ago, I’ve had no idea if Gen is intended to be the “gay friend” character or just the “quirky famous guy,” or maybe both? I figured that writing out my thoughts might be interesting for some people! Take everything with a grain of salt tho since I’m not a native speaker

1. Backwards speech

I want to first cover backwards speech (localized as pig latin in the English manga) because this used to confuse the fuck out of me. It felt like a quirky teen thing or internet slang, but it’s actually [zuuja-go] (“jazz” written backwards + “language”) which originated in the 40s-50s.

It was revived primarily by male TV stars and comedians in the 80s-90s, and to this day zuuja-go is regarded as a type of [entertainment industry-specific language]. However, it’s hardly used anymore. It’s kinda weird then that Gen, who’s too young to have lived in the revival period, would use zuuja-go, but my guess is that it’s a funny and somewhat original way to show his “popular entertainer” background. I personally don’t know any other characters who use it as regularly.

2. Choice of pronoun + speech patterns

Gen ends nearly every sentence with ~ne, ~yo ne, ~yo, or ~sa, or otherwise no particle at all. Questions almost never have an ending emphasis particle, putting the rise in intonation on the final word (the standard is to end with ~ka, ~no ka, etc). He also always contracts the verb ending ~te shimau into ~chau/jau (Senku always uses the contracted form too, but a more boyish derivative (chimau). It probably sounds crazy but trust me). There’s more I could list, but these are the most notable points lol

This kind of speech pattern is associated with teen girls/young women, so when it’s applied to a perceived male character, it’s used to indicate that they’re an “effeminate man”. In most cases, “effeminate” = gay/trans (yeah it’s shitty and outdated thinking). It’s also been applied to male characters who are idols or internet stars, possibly as a dig at their masculinity or making fun of their attempt to appeal to female audiences.

One example of the latter is Pyotr from Carole & Tuesday, who’s their universe’s equivalent of an Instagram celebrity. His sentence structure is almost identical to Gen’s, with the girlishness turned up to 11 because of the very high pitched, nasal-y voice given to him in the show. More on this later.

We also can’t forget how he calls everyone -chan. It’s diminutive and cute, but literally no one uses -chan that much. Even in fiction, female characters normally use it for female friends or children, and guys almost never use it except for children and maybe certain girls they’re close with. It’s definitely the most exaggerated cutesy trait he has. “Effeminate male” characters often address others - regardless of gender - with diminutive honorifics or cute nicknames even when not necessarily appropriate, so this is just gay-coded behavior from what I can tell lmao

One thing that’s different about Gen compared to other characters with the same "effeminate male” speech pattern (that I can recall, at least) is his pronoun. He uses the masculine “ore”, like Senku, Chrome, and most of the other young male characters. In text, his “ore” is even in kanji (俺) like theirs. Had it been written in hiragana or katakana, it would have given more of a casual or stylish vibe. Just as a sidenote, this is also why his name itself is written in mixed hiragana/katakana instead of kanji! It’s a typical thing for Japanese celebrities to do with their names to seem cool.

Anyway, characters who are meant to be portrayed as “effeminate men” will almost always use watashi or atashi, the standard “female” pronouns, or at least “boku” which is generally male-aligned but softer than “ore” (Pyotr uses boku, as an example).

Pronoun usage is way more nuanced in real life, but for fictional characters, it tends to be broken down into these kinds of stereotypes based on Tokyo-dialect Japanese.

He also is missing some other key points in his speech pattern that would more clearly identify him as gay/trans-coded, like using the feminine ~kashira (”I wonder...”) instead of ~kana.

3. Voice acting in the show

I love Gen’s Jpn voice honestly, but it does play into the “effeminate man” stereotype a little. His voice is a bit higher pitched than the other guys and somewhat nasal-y, which are both common traits of this stereotype when used with the speech patterns I talked about above. The way certain syllables are stressed also highlights his feminine speech pattern. However, he’s comparably tame to “effeminate” characters in other series. For example, his Jpn voice actor does raise the pitch of his natural voice for Gen, but it’s not a falsetto imo. It’s pretty common for male voice actors to do falsettos for “effeminate” characters.

Gen also doesn’t fall under a lot of the tropes that plague many gay/trans-coded characters and quirky celebrity types - such as being a “diva” or uncomfortably flirtatious - which tend to get amplified in voice acting.

This stuff combined with my previous post about his clothes makes me wonder even more about what was intended for his character. There’s a lot about him that is notably “feminine” without him leaning too hard into gay stereotype territory. And it’s just like, why did you do that.
