So what counts as “forced diversity”? I always hear how there is so much “forced diversity” in media and stuff but what about diversity done right? Like transgender people, what can be done about the “forced trans rep”? How can a story have a canonical trans character? It doesn’t have to be all in your face, just have something that hints, implies, or even shows that the character is trans? Like it can just be one little scene that straight up implies said character is trans and then continues on.

is that forced rep? What if the character when created was always trans in the first place? How would people know? What would be considered good rep? Has there ever been good rep? And most importantly, what can be done to improve representation in general? You always seem to have a problem with this so how can representation itself be improved so it doesn’t feel forced? And what do you consider to be good representation?

For me of what can be considered a good rep is if the character is shown first through personality and actions before the sexuality. Some may hint about their LGBT identity, but it's not the main focal point. They are just like any other character in a series with their own goals and dreams. Can be good if they have a good close connection with the protagonists or other characters that don't mind their sexuality. People cite lots of anime/manga/visual novels/light novels for this because it mostly tells a story first with the characters being people before the deeper aspect of sexuality. People know about Revolutionary Girl Utena having lesbians, but you get to know about Utena and Anthy as separate characters first before they touch upon the romance between them. Even for series that aren't about yuri and have characters that imply a girl liking another girl such as with Madoka Magica series, you get to know Homura and Madoka as their own individuals and see why they felt so drawn to each other. I also think the execution for Western media tries to be a bit more forceful and obvious. The in your face kind of attitude that Western media, especially America, love showing off to gain attention.

Honestly, I prefer treating them as action figures and having my own plays.

Fan art, fanfics, and shipping is like that for any series. Playing pretend with your dolls. Only you have to put in a lot of effort to type/write/draw/create that shit and most of the time, we are lazy to do so.

kanaya has way too many limitations as a character, rose just brings her down as a satellite love interest. but people cant even ship karkan as moirails because shes a lesbian and nobody knows if shed be okay with having a man in a concilliatory quadrant. fuck, you cant even show her being friendly with sollux or eridan because people instantly assume you ship them as matesprites.

which, again, limits her, because regardless of shipping shit her best relationship that gives her some ounce of personality and narrative relevance is by far with karkat.

i wanted to know kanayas opinions on culling and how she relates that to karkats mutancy and her duty with the matriorb. does she even like taking care of grubs? how did the auxiliatrixes stiffen her freedom? does she misses her lusus? why does she even like gardening? why did she never try to become god tier?

Some also wouldn't put Karkat x Kanaya as moirails for the fact that Kanaya is the mom friend. The responsible woman in the group. If a character is labeled as this, regardless of age or context, they are now considered an ADULT and everyone else is minors. Yes, that's how stupid it is. And these people forget that trolls are okay with incest and any troll ship regardless is just them doing it with their relative in some shape or form. I get that her not being able to stay or form in an easy relationship is suppose to play up the whole SPACE PLAYERS ARE DESTINED TO BE LONELY. That's what is the excuse for people still watching Kanaya going through the cucking in Homestuck 2/Beyond Canon. Same for Jade's situation. But fuck that bullshit. Kanaya and Jade deserve a lot better than this. It would be interesting to know another side of Kanaya that isn't about lesbian love. Is her growing plants like some metaphor thing of her giving life of her own despite the fact trolls reproduce differently? Was she bored of making clothes one time and decided to take advantage about her love for the sunlight and have plants grow alongside her? If other mutants do hatch from the Matriorb, would she take care of them? Does she believe all grubs should live and that's why we never hear anything about the trials like it was mentioned, being present on Earth C? The trials was something that states only the trolls who are lucky or strong enough to survive gets to live and have a parent. Did she get rid of that rule so that everyone can have a chance? Does she educate humans and Carapacians how to raise a grub? Could Consorts adopt? Is Kanaya fine with that? If not, why? Because they are dumb animals? There is so much to her that isn't just a tragic beauty who has a trashy interest in the Twilight series.

Since we’re talking Kanaya, the fandom forgets how much she was Jade’s counterpart to the Sgrub session. Her house literally was built to look like a moon tower of prospit/derse, like Jade. She takes gardening, like Jade, and she lives right next to a frog temple, like Jade! She does diverge from Jade taking an interest in hunting the undead and rainbowdrinker romance novels, which the fandom seems to forget because much of Kanaya’s story gets tied to romance! She was the last landdwelling troll introduced in Act 5 Act 1 and she starts of as the “meddling fussyfangs” as described by Vriska!

Her character introduction is losing her flushed interest with Vriska but still pining for her so she vacillates Eridan and Vriska’s kismesitude after Vriska mind-controlled Tavros to kiss her and Eridan broke his moirailigence with Feferi. Her only interaction in Act 4 is talking with Rose (and mistakenly one time with John who was on Rose’s computer) and that settled the dust, Kanaya bounces from one romance to another until she landed on Rose, and she had enough superficial traits and prose to her serious-straightforward-clear-intentions attitude that was flanderized in the progressing acts.

Fans still forget Kanaya’s “impromptutations” quip she gave to Karkat, in fact people forget how much Karkat worked out her love issues at the end of Act 5 Act 1 and some of Act 5 Act 2.

I don’t ship Karkat/Kanaya as flushed, but there is appeal to the dynamic since Karkat is the one person who, despite being all shouty, doesn’t ask of anything from Kanaya, and listens to her issues. It also correlates that Karkat’s refusal to engage with Rose’s troubling behavior and alcoholism that damages her flushed pairing with Kanaya and Terezi’s pitch romp with Gamzee after (possibly) dating Dave for a short period of time. It goes to show even after Karkat’s shipping concerns and fear of inter-species connections was overblown, he is a crux to hold the meteor together.

Back to Karkat’s shipping, we know he drew Jade with Dave and Rose with John, but didn’t account Rose being into women. As it turned out Rise may have had a subconscious Freudian bullshit crush on Jade, since Rose hooks up with Sgrub’s version of Jade Harley, and when Jade needs to surrogate a child. In secret. With a married woman… Rose doesn’t seem to refuse. Maybe, just maybe it’s because Rose does still want that smart, cheery, independent girl she knew all those years.

To summarize, if Kanaya is to be a good character with depth and realism, keep her close to Karkat. If you want Rose to stay monogamous (in the specific way she isn’t seeing a secret lover) keep her FAR AWAY FROM JADE HARLEY and if you want Rosemary to work as a ship, KEEP KARKAT AS CLOSE TO KANAYA AT ALL TIMES.

Don't forget that John had to remind Karkat about them being made in ectobiology and that incest was a taboo in human standards, much to Karkat's annoyance since incest is fine on Alternia. He had considered shipping DaveRose and JohnJade. Karkat and Kanaya are also close also parallels to The Dolorosa and The Signless relationship. The Dolorosa raised The Signless/Sufferer, but sadly had to watch him be executed and be sold off as a slave. Only to die later by Dualscar's jealousy. Karkat being able to save Kanaya from grief and pain would give a good closure for their ancestry.

My current Homestuck hot take is more people need to like Kanaya and actually think about her and until then you need to stop writing her. Girl who has so much going on but gets reduced to Rose's wife, passive observer, or hot violent alien girl. I need a special Bechdel test. Can you write Kanaya doing something totally on her own away from Rose while talking to someone without mentioning Rose. You can substitute romantic interest in for Rose if you write her with someone else.

Besides the Tavros chaser take, there is Shrek lore bullshit that's been added along with Eridan's gender arc from Pesterquest (and this is from ANDREW HUSSIE himself), VfromHomestuck that used to work at WhatPumpkin saying Lanque was basically like Eridan, Joe Biden being compared to Bec Noir, this giant wall text about the slurs in Homestuck, ICP acting black because they are stealing rap, a black art form, and it's why Gamzee is a black racist stereotype... Then there's people hating on ikimaru and HONE's art style being on model. And the most laughable of all is someone saying Homestuck shouldn't be marketable and that's okay.
