Post-postmodernism in Pop Culture: Homestuck’s Revenge

I recently saw an excellent video essay titled Why Do Movies Feel So Different Now? by Thomas Flight. Though the title is opaque clickbait, the video is actually about major artistic zeitgeists, or movements, in film history. Flight describes three major movements:

Modernism, encompassing much of classic cinema, in which an earnest belief in universal truths led to straightforward narratives that unironically supported certain values (rationalism, civic duty, democracy, etc.)

Postmodernism, in which disillusionment with the values of modernism led to films that played with cinematic structure, metafiction, and the core language of film, often with more unclear narratives that lacked straightforward resolutions, and that were skeptical or even suspicious of the idea of universal truth

Metamodernism, the current artistic zeitgeist, which takes the structural and metafictional innovations of postmodernism but uses them not to reject meaning, but point to some new kind of meaning or sincerity.

Flight associates metamodernism with the “multiverse” narratives that are popular in contemporary film, both in blockbuster superhero films and Oscar darlings like Everything Everywhere All at Once. He argues that the multiverse conceptually represents a fragmented, metafictional lack of universal truth, but that lack of truth is then subverted with a narrative that ultimately reaffirms universal truth. In short, rather than rejecting postmodernism entirely, metamodernism takes the fragmented rubble of its technique and themes and builds something new out of that fragmentation.

Longtime readers of this blog may find some of these concepts familiar. Indeed, I was talking about them many years ago in my Hymnstoke posts, even using the terms “modernism” and “postmodernism,” though what Flight calls metamodernism I tended to call “post-postmodernism” (another term used for it is New Sincerity). Years before EEAAO, years before Spider-verse, years before the current zeitgeist in pop cultural film and television, there was an avant garde work pioneering all the techniques and themes of metamodernism. A work that took the structural techniques of postmodernism--the ironic detachment, the temporal desynchronization, the metafiction--and used them not to posit a fundamental lack of universal truth but rather imbue a chaotic, maximalist world of cultural detritus with new meaning, new truth, new sincerity. That work was:

Homestuck.

That’s right! Everyone’s favorite web comic. Of course, I’m not the first person to realize the thematic and structural similarities between Homestuck and the current popular trend in film. Just take a look at this tweet someone made yesterday:

As you might expect if you’re at all aware of the current cultural feeling toward Homestuck, many of the replies and quotes are incredibly vitriolic over this comparison. Here’s one of my favorites:

It’s actually quite striking how many elements of the new Spider-verse are similar to Homestuck; aspects of doomed timelines, a multiversal network that seems to demand certain structure, and even “mandatory death of parental figure as an impetus for mandated personal growth” are repeated across both works. The recycling and revitalization of ancient, seemingly useless cultural artifacts (in Homestuck’s case, films like Con Air; in Spider-verse, irrelevant gimmick Spider-men from spinoffs past) are also common thematic threads.

As this new post-postmodern or metamodern trend becomes increasingly mainstream, and as time heals all and allows people to look back at Homestuck with more objectivity, I believe there will one day be a rehabilitation of Homestuck’s image. It’ll be seen as an important and influential work, with a place inside the cultural canon. Perhaps, like Infinite Jest, it’ll continue to have some subset of commentators who cannot get past their perception of the people who read the work rather than the work itself even thirty years after its publication, but eventually it’ll be recognized for innovations that precipitated a change in the way people think about stories and their meaning.

Until that day, enjoy eating raw sewage directly from a sewer pipe.

(Side note: I think Umineko no naku koro ni, which was published around the same time as Homestuck and which deals with many similar themes and then-novel ideas, will also one day receive recognition as a masterpiece. Check it out if you haven’t already!)

Forgotten Past - 'William Russo, darling.'

Part 1 - Billy Russo x Fem!Reader

Here it is, a Billy Russo version of Memories. Yes, I changed the name, and am now giving a title to each part. The story will be changed according to Russo and since we don't know who canon is, will not follow Punisher storyline. This is more of an after, but how it all fully works, will be revealed soon. I am hoping to fill some plot holes this time, so the story should start making more sense as we go.

A quick question, should I remove Memories (my Ben Barnes story) or keep it there if anyone wants to ever read it?

As for a face of Tom, let me know who you guys are thinking!

The busy and chaotic atmosphere of the cafe was only adding to the jumbled mind of Y/N Parker. She was trying to decide what beverage to order and though it was supposed to be a simple task, it felt to be a burdensome job that she couldn’t seem to get away with. Finally deciding on a simple black coffee and a chocolate muffin, she ignored the grumbling and went on to find a booth.

The cafe wasn’t very big. It was a little cozy place she had found during the first month of arriving here, not that a library is not snug but she needed a place to get to outside work. The cafe had a little corner table, which was her favorite because it allowed all the privacy she ever needed. ‘Why talk when you have a whole new world with you?’ was her answer whenever she was asked about always carrying a book.

The cafe had a lot of posters of old bands, thoughts of great people and what not (of which Y/N recognized none, all those faces just seemed some illusion of the forgotten past). The cafe also had a fireplace just near Y/N’s corner and she loved to read in its warmth. It looked like the cafe was started by an old-very-much-in-love-couple, which was true, she had met the owners and they were lovely. The place had wooden walls, the smell of fresh coffee beans always lingering in the atmosphere, a little hustle-bustle, just like a second home.

But today it all seemed like a burden. Maybe because of the mess in her head, maybe because crowds are never good. Even the homey feeling was not helping with the feeling of dread she was having, almost as if she was staring at a cheetah’s eyes, who looked ready to attack. She had a strong notion that something would go bad today, which only increased with the prying eyes. Setting these thoughts aside, she rushed to find her booth.

The girl sat at a booth in the corner of the shop and began reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, keeping a side eye on all the exits. She had scanned the place as soon as she went in, not even realizing her actions. No, she wasn't an assassin, but somehow this was second nature.

The coffee seemed to arrive in the blink of an eye, this is what happens when people get too engrossed in books. While munching on her breakfast, she was making plans for the day and failed to notice a man staring at her with pursed lips and anxious eyes. He swallowed his saliva as a ball rolled down his throat. Y/N narrowed her eyes and frowned a little. She turned back to see if he was staring at someone else but no one was behind her.

Y/N Parker was a 20-something-year-old girl, she couldn’t remember anything about herself, or her past and nor could she remember why she did not remember. She was an average heighted girl. Sometimes she thought with a little more work, she can almost look like one of her favorite characters.

Y/N could only seem to recall events from a year ago and was trying to balance finding her family or friends with her job at the local library. It wasn’t much but it was enough to get by, until she got back the light of her memories.

Though she had met a man, Tom, who seemed to know a great deal about her life, some of which even felt a little something he had only heard a loved one say, but something in her heart, was not ready to trust him. Plus, though handsome, he came off as a little creepy with all of his talks. He kept popping up, seeming more and more suspicious to be a coincidence every time. The man was happy, probably too happy to see her, which made her wonder if she had something special or was he just too jolly a person.

The man staring at her previously, chuckled slightly when he finally got a look at the cover of the book she was reading, it was always their favorite one. She used to carry a book everywhere she went. The man was trying to figure out an icebreaker because he really needed to talk to her. You can not chicken out this time. He was not a coward, but even a slight chance of losing her made him fear messing up this situation.

Finally deciding on beginning with a thing or two about the book, maybe using a quote, and her favorite drink, he got up and walked over.

“Experience is merely the name men give to their mistakes,” he quoted as he walked up to her being a beaut of grace in his suit. Confidence dripped from his body language. She looked up to see a dark brown-haired and dark eyed man, almost 6 feet, looking down at her grinning widely. This grin wasn’t creepy or fake, just genuine happiness but she could detect a hint of nervousness behind those eyes. A little confused, but excited, she replied with another quote, “Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

The man chuckled and stuck his hand out while having a hopeful look in his eyes, “Believe me miss, some do...they just realize it when they have lost the substance dearest to them.”

Shaking his hand back, smiling, which seemed a little awkward to her as this was the first time she smiled in a long time, though she isn’t sure how long, “It sure doesn’t seem like it, Mr...?”

Whatever little hope was there in the man’s eyes, was lost at her words, though he still tried his best to mask his disappointment with a smirk, while kissing the back of her hand, replying, “Russo. William Russo, darling.”

She ignored the way her heart flipped at that. But the pink tint on her cheeks still gave her away, which earned her a smile from Billy.

Though he didn’t seem to ask, Y/N still felt she should introduce herself, he seems to be an old-fashioned gentleman, she thought while replying, the smirk birthing familiarity within her, “Y/N. Y/N Parker. Pleasure to meet you Mr.Russo. But do I know you?” she asked, remembering the eyes that stared at her so intensely not so long ago.

“It was just the book,” he said gravely.

The man, Russo, although he insisted that she call him Billy, asked to join her and even though she was not good at meeting new people, she agreed, curious as a cat. While sitting down, Billy motioned to the drink he had bought, to which he received a raised eyebrow. Don’t expect too much right now, he thought, but offered her the drink nonetheless, which prompted her to question,

"How do I know there's nothing wrong with whatever this drink is?" Oh his clever girl.

“For starters, this is a coffee shop, not a bar. Secondly, the man behind the counter has been glaring holes in my head ever since I ordered this drink, I’m sure he’ll be happy to answer.” He had been glaring holes at him too, but she did not need to know that.

Y/N looked at the man in question and he just shrugged.

“Right, sorry about him, he’s kind of an overprotective brother,” she said, accepting the drink, noticing Billy's tense posture relaxing, “So Billy, have you ever read the book or did you just Google a quote to use?”

He chuckled, “I read it during one of my deployments. The movie, comparatively, was eh.”

“Oh, you’re a soldier?”

“Was. Marine, actually.” She froze.

A thank you for his service was on the tip of her tongue, but she had a feeling he would not really be fond of it. Weird. “So Billy t- oh shit.”

“What, what happened?” Billy asked, snapping himself out of the lovely thoughts he was having about her. He subconsciously moved closer to her, hand just hovering over the gun tucked in the waistband of his pants. His dark orbs moved over everything, trying to find the danger.

Before she could respond, the bell rang signaling someone had entered. While Billy’s eyes flickered to the person entering, hand resting on the gun, he saw Y/N trying to hide her face through her book in his peripheral vision. He saw the man's eyes fixated over Y/N and himself with, was that anger? or no jealousy? a little defeat perhaps? He smiled slyly. That man deserves to be jealous, he has the most beautiful wife after all.

The man almost rushed towards them like if we were to go any slower, a bomb would explode, coming to a stop at their table. Billy glanced over at Y/N as soon as recognition set in his eyes. Should he just shoot him here?

When Billy finally got a look at the now bubbling-with-anger-but-trying-not-to-show-it man, he noticed his appearance, which looked familiar, but he wasn’t aware his wife was disturbed by his presence. Well, she was always a good actress.

The brunette-haired, green-eyed man, though a little scrawny, was easy on the eyes but he had made her uncomfortable in any way, hence, Billy was already planning his death. He can not kill him here, too many witnesses. Maybe in that back alley? His men can take care of the dead body.

He instinctively reached his other hand to hers, but realized she might find it weird. Still, he rested it on the table. He was mildly surprised when he felt fingers brush against his and he completed the task, giving her hand a light squeeze. It was a start. Billy felt like celebrating but he wanted to deal with this fucker first.

He smirked even proudly when the man’s anger intensified on seeing their actions.

“Y/N, darling?” The man prompted up, eyes not leaving the hand. Billy held her hand even tighter, enjoying the flames burning behind his green eyes. Billy did not miss the way she flinched at that. He wanted to take her and leave this place right now but he had to be patient and not give himself away.

Y/N looked up a little hesitantly, putting a fake smile that seemed so real even Billy was deceived for a moment. “Yes, Tom?” Tom, right that was his name. Billy always called ‘asshole’ in his head so he had forgotten his real name.

“What are you doing here? I was looking for you,” the man’s voice was almost as sweet as sugar, his British accent peeking through. Bet he ate a lot of sugar before this, even seems like an ant, Billy snickered silently at his own little thought.

“I was- am reading...needed a little break. Why were you looking for me?”

“Nothing important, just thought we could hang out,” glancing at Billy he added, “and who you might be?” venom lacing his tone.

Ignoring that, he answered with his name.

“Tom.” They shook hands as a pretty formal greeting. Billy didn’t fail to notice the frowning-scowl. Should he shoot that scowl down?

Y/N, as if sensing the tension, spoke up while collecting her stuff, “I have to go, work stuff.” She had not left his hand, nor had any intention to.

“Billy, would you like to join? I’m going to the library,” she asked, her hands fiddling with the edge of her shirt.

His eyes lit up, “Sure.”

They quickly said their goodbyes and without giving him a chance to respond, they both hastily made their exit. Outside while walking, Billy questioned her about the strange man, pretending he did not have the whole history of him already.

“Oh he is a friend...if you can call him that.”

“Did he do anything wrong? You seemed a little uncomfortable.”

“No, nothing explicitly, but he’s been kind of popping up a lot, just needed to get away from him for a bit I guess.” She again chuckled nervously.

“If you want me to do anything about it, I can.”

Thinking he was kidding, she continued, “So, Billy, tell me about yourself.”

“Let’s see,”he thought, shrugging and began with his first name, “I’m 28. I like to read, as you may have interpreted-”

“I hadn’t,” sarcasm was pretty evident in her words.

“-and I got some favorite books, but I’m going to go with Atonement for now,” he continued after making a mocking face at her interruption.

This time her eyes lit up, “I’ve read it. The ending was sad,” the pause was either for effect or she was genuinely thinking, her eyes wandering for a moment and then with a flicker she added, “It didn’t stop it from being good though. They did get their happy ending after all.”

He agreed. “So have you seen the movie or not aware about it?”

“Oh come onnn. I should have searched, is the movie good?”

“It covers the book to a large extent, the portrayal is great, so yeah sure,” hesitantly he added, “perhaps we can watch it together sometime, I mean, if you want to, not that you have to say yes for sure-” he almost began rambling until she cut him off. Yes, Billy the beaut being nervous in front of a girl. But that was not just any girl, was it? She was the one that held his heart.

“Are you asking me out, Mr.Russo?” She was surprised at her own statement. Her cheeks red between a tomato and stop traffic light.

“Would you like it if I did?” he questioned, ignoring his own blush. He almost knew what she was going to say, because he knows her. If only she would remember.

“As much as I would like to say yes-” Billy looked surprised, “-I need to figure some things out. Plus, we hardly know each other. I don't even know what you do for a living, you could be a assassin for all I know-”

“You aren’t that far, in a way. I have a private military contract firm,” he interjected. He just asked her for the sole purpose of getting her to trust him, he had enough proof from their held hands, but he couldn’t help playing along, even if he didn’t want it to be a game at all.

“So, you’re The Winter Soldier without the brainwashing?”

He nodded.

“Do you have a gun hidden?” Billy laughed, nodding again. She wasn’t surprised, honestly.

They hadn’t even realized they had reached the library and were just about to pass it when she looked around. Realizing where they were, she invited him inside, making a grand gesture which regrettably caused her to separate their hands. He, masking his frown and wanting to spend every single moment with his partner, eagerly followed her. Even if she didn’t know.

so, yes, you are definitely responsible for that oscar/arthur WIP. like. not even low-key -- you are absolutely the one to blame. because, like. you just wrote them so WELL, and i wanted more!!!

because their relationship dynamic is just so INTRIGUING to me, you know? we have oscar, who is perhaps the most deadpan, dry and sarcastic person you could ever imagine in front of a camera. arthur, in contrast, is an absolute and chaotic extrovert, who apparently loves to tease and flirt and make oscar giggle/blush. the way normally deadpan oscar is just laughing SO much around arthur... oh my god. yeah. obsessed.

so yeah!! for this specific fic, i wanted to lean directly into that prema video canon: AKA, arthur is playful, a flirt, and also an annoying little shit who likes to bother oscar, apparently. HOW THEY'D BE INTRODUCED:

Since as I've mentioned before Annie and Steven live in the same building, I think Annie would be introduced right at the beginning of the first episode by knocking on the door of Steven's flat after he wakes up for the first time, before sweeping in with some coffee to offer him along with a vegan muffin from a batch that she made herself, before expressing concern about Steven's health and how little he sleeps. It wouldn't be a very long scene, but it would be good for setting up their relationship and the kind of banter they have.

WHO THE FANDOM SHIPS THEM WITH:

Definitely mainly the Moon Boys, but there would also definitely be people who ship her with Layla (given that she literally says "Marc, I think I'm in love with your ex-wife" at one point), as well as putting her in a poly ship with Layla and the boys. There would also probably be people who shipped her with Harrow or even Khonshu, but those people would be weirdos.

WHY THE FANDOM LOVES THEM:

Before Steven discovers Marc and meets Layla, Annie is the first person to really be kind to him and actually seem to care about him, and she continues to try and protect him even when it becomes very clear that he's the more powerful one in their friendship, and given that Steven is a very beloved character who the fandom wants to protect, I think a lot of people would appreciate that. I also think people would love her sense of humor, her bickering-to-lovers dynamic with Marc, and the very "girls supporting girls" relationship she has with Layla.

WHY THE FANDOM HATES THEM:

I mean, you just know there would be a ton of people furious that she's "getting in the way" of Layla and the Moon Boys, even though Marc and Layla are literally divorced (and also Layla's an aro-ace queen in my canon), as well as people calling her useless and saying she doesn't make sense in the story for going along to Egypt when she's the only one who can't fight. You know, just the general bullshit.

WHAT THE CAST RELATIONSHIP WOULD BE LIKE:

Pippa Soo is the literal best, so I think the cast relationship would be fantastic!! She, Oscar, and May would be such a chaotic trio, and I can totally imagine her having the best banter with Ethan Hawke.

WHAT THEIR AUDITION SCENE WOULD BE:

Probably either the scene where she tells Marc that she's going with him to Egypt whether he likes it or not as long as he's "dragging my friend's body along on your little treasure hunt," or the scene right before they go into the catacombs where she tells Steven that she suspects Marc might actually be the original inhabitant of the body. These are arguably the most important scenes she has with either of them, at least in season one, so it would probably be the one the casting directors would use to get a proper sense of an actress's chemistry with Oscar Isaac.

DEPENDING ON THE FANDOM, WHO THEY’D BE AT PRESS TOURS/COMIC CON WITH:

I'm reasonably sure that Oscar, Ethan, and May all did their interviews and conventions together for the most part, so Phillipa would be with all of them! If they were to be seperated, though, she'd probably be with May, and there would be half a million YouTube compilations of the two of them being cute besties together.

IF THEY SPOIL THINGS:

I mean, you know how Marvel is about spoiling things, so even if Phillipa was the spoiling type, I imagine she'd be too afraid to (😅).

IF THE SHOW/MOVIE HAS ENDED, IF THEY’RE HAPPY WITH THEIR CHARACTER’S ENDING AND THE ENDING AT LARGE:

Do you remember the movie Winnie the Pooh where Christopher Robin goes missing and Pooh and the gang try and find him thinking he got kidnapped by the backson only to be at school so how does human Winnie the Pooh react to him missing until the end of the day I can only imagine everyone going on a man hunt and the police getting involved on trying to find him

i referenced “the Search for Christopher Robin 1997” through Oscar, when he’s talking about his cousin Harold getting lost in a cave.. but i think you’re talking about “Winnie the Pooh 2011”

anywho, i /have/ thought of this scenario before XD the challenge with this verse is trying to balance the fact that they are all (mostly) responsible adults, while also keeping their innocent chaotic nature from canon. so it’d probably be something like, miscommunication and frantic running around checking everyone’s houses. while Chris is safe and sound in some obvious place haha.

About Jaune ships...

I have opinions. You may not agree, but they are mine. They may change in time, but not now.

LANCASTER ( RUBY X JAUNE )

The old tried and true. I mean, what's not to like? Cute girl falls for first guy she meets at Beacon? Classic romance trope, and after reading how much Ruby loves romance stories (I consider certain parts in the manga canon), it makes sense. In fact, after Arkos sank (A moment of silence, please . . . Thank you), many moved to Lancaster, which isn't bad. Happens all the time in fandoms. Sad thing, though, is far I think she'll last. If we're talking Volume 5 or earlier, then maybe. However, I feel if Ruby were to have an endgame in romance, it would be RoseGarden (I have opinions on that as well, but today isn't the day to discuss that), mostly because Oscar bumped Jaune's role from male lead to male side. Not to mention that while Jaune is becoming a beast in his own right, Ruby is a different creature altogether and evolving her character more rapidly and chaotically than anyone else (Must be all that screentime).

TLDR: I want it to be canon, but I might just be hoping.

WHITE KNIGHT ( WEISS X JAUNE)

Doofus in tin foil meets princess who hates daddy (Am I in the romance section of the library? You know, the corner for adults only?) No, but I do like this ship. I'm always a sucker for the fantasy genre, and using a zero to hero male makes it relatable. I also kind of ship it because the same reason I ship NaruSaku in the Naruto fandom: he likes her and he's willing to go the distance. But enough about that; instead let's talk about canon. Will they hook up? It's a soft maybe for me, for two reasons. 1. Rosegarden is most likely to be endgame, and after Ruby and Pyrrha, I'd say Weiss is Jaune's next to be his love interest. 2. Weiss has warmed up to Jaune. Sure, not lover or crush level (Yet), but she's definitely changed her opinion on him. In Volume 1, Jaune was bugging her, like all the time, which I could see as him getting mixed signals on (Exhibit A: Tall, blonde, and scraggly). When Volume 5 came around, everyone jumped onboard because he saved her life (Don't lie, because I'll admit that I did it, too). Not the best reason, but still reason enough, I'd say. Then in Volume 7, she hangs out with him and Oscar to the movies (It was either that or awkward Bumbleby all night. I feel ya, sister). Nothing romantic happens, but it does show how much their relationship has developed. If Weiss is Jaune's endgame, then they have set the pieces up perfectly to do so.

TLDR: High likelihood to be canon and I'm a sucker for Knight/Princess ships.

KNIGHTSHADE ( BLAKE X JAUNE)

This is the part where I say definitely not. Not in a million years, but I'll explain why I like the ship, though. As for why it won't work, the answer is Bumbleby. They haven't kissed yet, but you know they're going to eventually (Because if they don't, the fans will attack like a swarm of hornets). But here's the question you might be asking now: why do I ship this? Well, it's part of the allure of "opposites attract" ('Cause I'm dressed like a cat!). Blake is an intelligent, outspoken, and agile ninja with a criminal history of terrorism who spends her free time reading novels. Jaune is a B at best on his tests, soft-hearted, and ground-based knight who's worst crime is fraud (Still a crime, but peanuts compared to literal terrorism) and spends his free time hanging out with his team. Day and night. But they also tried that with Sun for a season and a half and it didn't last (BECAUSE BEES).

TLDR: Not even a snowball's chance in the summer sun, but so much story potential if you do (Which I do)!

DRAGONSLAYER ( YANG X JAUNE )

This, I would say, is the opposite of Knightshade, where Jaune is the day and Blake is night, here Yang is the Sun and Jaune is the Moon (Like their crests! Remember those? Y'know, when they were relevant?) Will it work? Even less so than Knightshade. However, it does open up some interesting paths considering how... provocative Yang can be, and Jaune, compared to the other guys, is the nerdiest, geekiest dude at Beacon. It's like the cheerleader/nerd romance, except the cheerleader is the captain of every sports team... and rides a motorcycle. The Volume 8 preview introduced us to Yang and Jaune riding motorcycles and we went nuts over it. Yang was back in her element, roaring down the street, riding on walls, popping off tricks with Oscar riding- Back to what I was saying, people were asking, "How did he know how to ride a motorcycle?" and the elementary answer is "He didn't." He almost fell off his bike from a small box in the road. True, anyone would, but look at how he reacts: he stiffens, he refocuses on the road. This kid literally started riding at breakfast, and I DARE you to prove me wrong. But hey, great fic material right there, though, eh?

TLDR: Never gonna happen, but I don't care. All I care about is writing that they love each other. And they also fu-!

ARKOS ( PYRRHA X JAUNE )

I'm sorry, I need a moment. . . . Alright. Do it for her. This ship... was perfect. Probably the best ship out them all. I legit almost cry every time I think about Volume 3. Pyrrha was everyone's favorite. Her background, her interactions, her choreography, everything! But, of course, like everything in our lives, she was too good to be true. But let's honor her memory by talking about her ship, Arkos. Pyrrha was the champion of the world, the Brothers' and Oums' gift to Remnant. She could do no wrong and she HATED it. Her plight was with how she was seen. Everybody knew her! Everybody, except Jaune. And he only figured out she was "a big deal" was because Weiss had to spell it out for him! As time went on, they became the best of friends, two peas in a pod, the perfect odd couple! They worked together and trusted each other, they cared for and supported each other, they lo- No. No, I can't say it. It's been years, and it still hurts. So, I'll explain something else: the reason why Jaune SHOULD NOT be shipped right now. That reason is Pyrrha. Jaune was helpless to save her. He's suffering from survivor's guilt and he's still grieving. In Volume 4, he would sneak away and train until late at night to scroll recording of her. In Volume 5, he confronted Cinder and got Weiss almost killed because he let his grief for Pyrrha take control of him and let his emotions run wild. In Volume 6, he finds the Pyrrha statue and he... I don't know how to say this, but he let's go. He accepts that Pyrrha is gone and he's starting the healing process. He's finally ready to move forward.

TLDR: T.T I never felt that it was wise to wish too much~

MARTIAL ARCS ( REN X JAUNE)

I'll be honest, I don't really ship it. Yeah, it's cute, and it falls perfectly into the "if I had to pick a guy" part of me, but to be honest, I don't ship it. 10% because Renora and 90% it just doesn't click with me. They both just seem too soft, too quiet, too introverted. Best friends? Yes, definitely! But lovers? Eeeeeh, not really.

TLDR: I will only ship as neccessary.

NORA'S ARC ( NORA X JAUNE )

I've only just got in this deep with the fandom only recently, so I don't know if a lot of you know me. Heck, I'm probably just some RWBY fan you happen to spot as you move through your dash. However, old or new, I want to be made absolutely positively clear on this. Of all the ships here, this has got to be my-

O T FUDGIN' P

Wow! Never thought I'd feel so strongly about a crack ship like this. And yes, as sad it is to say, this is a crack ship. Renora was planned from day one, so it can't be helped. At least it didn't blast me in the face all of the sudden (OH NO, NOT THE BEES! AAAAARGH! THEY'RE IN MY EYES!). But why this ship? Well, for one thing, it's that whole opposites attract thing with Nora as the bubbly, outspoken, airhead powerhouse and Jaune as the soft spoken, introverted, nerd tactician. But wait, there's more to this trope, because it can go deeper: Order VS Chaos! Who makes all the messes? Who cleans up those messes? Who follows all the rules? Who makes their own doors? It's just. So. Damn! GOOD! One sad thing about this ship though is that it's not only not canon because of Renora, it's anti-canon because Renora. Every fan fic of Nora's Arc requires an explanation for Ren and Nora to not be together-together, like you have to write a formal apology to the FNDM for liking something that's different from what is canon or commonly accepted. If that's the case, then I'll be the anarchist here!

TLDR: I LOVE IT! What's that? Not canon? Who gives a damn?! I just explained why Jaune won't be shipped anyways! Now, if you'll excuse, I have some fan fics to find.

ARCFALL ( CINDER X JAUNE )

Oh, here it goes! Now, if we're talking ships that'll never happen, this is where we find better reasons than "it's not canon" and "character development". No, this... This is a declaration of war. Allow me to explain. Cinder Fall is evil. Like, down to her core. She wants power and she'll cut through anyone to get to it. Including Pyrrha. This woman sank Arkos by means other than "X and Y kissed, so..." She killed X, leaving Y alone. And her interactions with Jaune tell me she wouldn't even be worth a hate-bang. But, as Momma always, there's a thin line between love and hate. This is where the appeal comes in. Cinder is evil with no past, which leaves the previous chapter's of her life story blank to be filled in. Jaune is good with a troublesome, albeit easy past, but untapped potential for more. It's another opposites attract, but different from INTRO VS EXTRO and CHAOS VS ORDER; this is GOOD VS EVIL. Who will win this battle of wills; will our hero purify the tainted heart, or will he slip deeper into darkness, never to return to the light?

TLDR: Should be a NOTP, and yet the allure pulls me in.

What’s it to you?

*Long post ahead

There is something on my mind. It’s called Occam’s Razor. The definition I know is, or rather the interpretation in my head is, it’s a gray area, a fine line. So for example, when it comes to Buck and Eddie, I do believe they play right on the Occam’s Razor. The fact that they could be this or they could be that, riding that fine line, which one is true?

Picture this and imagine you’re seeing jealous Buck:

Option 1: Jealous Buck idea pushes the razor to the more romantic, buried feelings thing we Buddie clowns are thinking about.

Option 2: If you don't view it that way, you could then simply see Buck maybe panicking because of his abandonment issues. For example, Buck’s reaction face becomes more like heyo Eddie doesn’t just get to so easily partner off with another firefighter outside the 118 like that [in this case being him or Hen as Eddie’s only option Buck accepts] until they finally ease into helping the 126 with these fires, Buck himself even.

Option 3: We’re speculating our asses off no matter if you believe in option 1 and/or 2, and we do not yet know what’s going on in this scene...

Therefore we’re split down the razor’s edge. Then I also think of this video. The fact that Buck and Eddie fall under the “just let the bromos be homos?” category. They have the cooked up potential for something more and not to just remain a “healthy male friendship.” When we have proper queer representation in combination with “healthy male friendship” then we can talk about the latter. I’m trying to rack my brain for healthy male friendships, but I come back to that video and the laundry list of mlm couples in the just let the bromos be homos category. My brain wanted to say FinnPoe from Star Wars as a healthy male friendship, but then that’s still part of the same category and all I can hear is Oscar Isaac praising the notion that these two characters could be falling in love during wartime...but apparently Disney/the world isn’t ready for that...?

The problem is I cannot think of any representation for healthy male friendships. I keep thinking Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster from Psych, but even then there were definite issues surrounding their friendship...if you watched that show. Now, with that show I did believe that Shawn Spencer is bisexual, but I don't headcanon that his awakening happened with Gus. It just happened and he’s known about it for most of his life (like since 18 probably) and Gus knows it too. But again it’s never explicitly made so, it’s always hinted at though. Also, don't get started on Teen Wolf if you’re thinking about that one. I don't pay any attention and maybe it’s because I may not be seeking it out...but I cannot think of a single thing I’ve watched with healthy friendships, save for perhaps in Thor Ragnarok the trio that is Hulk/Banner, Thor and Valkyrie when they’re not fighting each other. Though, there is the case of Gary and Miranda in the BBC show called Miranda. They could’ve had a good run as just friends, but clearly it wasn’t unheard of to think of a hetero pairing starting off as just friends to become more, obvi. Back to 911...

As we teeter this Occam’s Razor, all I ask for is explicit admittance from Buck that he is bisexual. Just for him to say it to close friends and family. For him to feel okay with the fact that he likes boys too. So yes, he has little or no experience, but he can’t help but feel attracted to men as well. Banking on the South America exploration/runaway to expound on this some more. That yes, Buck has known about his bisexuality and does know how he truly feels, but for whatever reasons he’s not ready to show/tell those true feelings to anyone else. For whatever reasons he had to build/hide behind the chaotic sex addicted punk persona that he named Buck 1.0.

I also don't believe that everything needs to be boxed into a corner. 911 was the show that sparked a procedural TV drama to life and thus it created 911 Lonestar as a way to probably showcase a different state and how they handle these emergencies/fires. Who the hell knows, perhaps it’s just for more money? It’s just I don't think it’s a matter of 911 is the mostly “hetero show” whereas 911 Lonestar is “the show for the gays” because it has the canon gay couple. Well, for the record 911 also has a canon lesbian/gay couple; Hen and Karen. What I mean to say is that irl there are LGBT+ folk everywhere, therefore more of them can appear as characters in 911, or even in Lonestar as well. LGBT+ people live in CA and TX; sometimes 911 did the peripheral gay couples who found themselves caught in an emergency situation (the boy with the crush outside the coffee shop, that couple in which one of them had tapeworm and Buck nonchalantly just yanked that thing out...and then of course the older couple who were so graciously paralleled to Buck…). Oh, you can’t forget Josh in 911, who also seemingly thought Maddie was once setting him up with Buck. Also note it wasn’t written as Buck denying Josh on that thought. He just ran with it, no qualms, and we didn’t have some unnecessary “no homo” backlash which leaves room for us to say wait, a gosh darn minute? Are we still leaving room for Buck figuring something out and/or coming closer to accepting himself? Ps. It also wasn’t written for Maddie to decline the notion either. She of course jokingly said her brother wasn’t good enough for Josh and honestly, I think we got {Oliver playing} Buck as a bit offended by Maddie doing that.

Buck is also a double edged sword. So is Eddie. You have two men presented as so strong, so masculine that the instant it’s thought they might like men, it’s damaging to their masculinity somehow. That’s called toxic masculinity which is something Buck and even Eddie occasionally fall into. I think they’ve definitely grown out of that with the help of others and each other even, but I think this is why us crazy shippers wanting Buddie and/or Buck revealed as bisexual is so jarring to others- Toxic masculinity? Fragility? The fact that if men like Buck and Eddie are viewed to be gay/bi then it hurts this notion of what it means to be a strong man. But let’s box it into a corner because 911 Lonestar is the gay show and thus we think less of the characters TK and Carlos because they are gay- not all equivalent in strength to the “healthy male friendship” that is Buck and Eddie? When in fact the four of these characters have similarities? TK and Buck are so very reckless, dive in no questions asked kind of thing and it seems to me that Eddie and Carlos would be the take orders kind of men. They will fall in line with the occasional reckless decision...so therefore they have more similarities than just the four of them belonging to the LGBT+ community...or regardless of if they do all belong in that community together- the whole point is that in real life the Buck and Eddie dynamic of a friendship (or the possibility of something more, as one or both characters coming to terms with their sexuality) exists in the same world with relationships that are similar to TK and Carlos’. So the two supposed bromos (just friends) exist in the same world as the homos...therefore unboxing the shows from their corners entirely.

Another thing that I think this thing around Buck is falling prey to, is that bi guys are just faking it. It’s one stop on the way to figuring out that “they’re actually just gay.” Except no that’s not the case with bisexuality. For some people, it could be, but from what I see with Buck it’s not that at all. He’s bisexual, that’s that.

Also, most everyone thinks those who ship Buddie want Buck revealed as bisexual to only be with Eddie and to see two sexy men get it on. Honestly, 911 Lonestar did provide sufficiently with that, because them TK and Carlos scenes are downright drool worthy, but that’s not all I came for. Anyway, I clocked Buck as possibly bi in season 1- the full moon ep, where yes he’s getting closer to Abby, but damn does he get on well with that gay guy who had tapeworm. Well, shit. Then after Eddie’s introduction they go on to parallel Buck to that older gay couple...anyhow, it’s just why keep putting Buck in a queer space and then not run with that? Yes, sure there are strong straight allies to the LGBT+ community, but Buck doesn’t read heterosexual ally to me, it feels more like the LGBT+ community is where he belongs. I’d say Eddie Diaz belongs there too, but he’s like a mystery on this front. I think he understands his feelings/attractions towards men and he’d respond like yeah, sure, they’ve been there, but I haven’t done shit about them and I haven’t labelled them [gay/bi]. What’s it to you? And if eventually this involved Buck, he’d be like yeah, so I’m head over heels for that smart and lovable reckless idiot, what else do you want me to say?

Recently Viewed: At Eternity’s Gate

My busy work schedule prevented me from catching At Eternity’s Gate during its initial theatrical run back in 2018. Fortunately, the film is now available to stream on Netflix, allowing me to finally experience this quintessentially cinematic celebration of the brilliance and madness of Vincent van Gogh.

Julian Schnabel’s quirky, unconventional, experimental visual style perfectly complements his subject. The framing is uncomfortably tight—often borderline claustrophobic—utilizing lenses that distort landscapes and facial features alike. The camerawork is loose, spontaneous, and improvisatory, making no effort to conceal the guiding hand of the operator. The color grading is carefully manipulated to evoke myriad moods and emotions—jubilant yellows and greens, melancholy blues, suffocating whites and grays. There is no pretense of naturalism; like Van Gogh—who preferred to produce his artwork quickly, chaotically applying paint to the canvas in thick layers—the director embraces the inherent artificiality of his medium.

Of course, such bold aesthetic choices run the risk of alienating the audience. Schnabel was extremely lucky, then, to have Willem Dafoe as his star; the actor’s sensitive, compassionate performance (which earned him an Oscar nomination) anchors the narrative, lending a concrete sense of humanity to the otherwise abstract, minimalistic plot.

The result is a unique and worthy addition to the informal “canon” of movies about Van Gogh (see also: Lust for Life, Vincent & Theo, Loving Vincent)—not so much a traditional biopic, but rather an impression of a tortured genius ahead of his time.

CANON IS AN ILLUSION PT. 2

So now that @healing-winston-pratt and I have explained how we got rid of ¼ of Supernova, let me tell you that it doesn’t stop here because you don’t mess with the type As when something gets into their heads.

This is our post-Supernova canon divergence :) which, btw, it’s the one we’ll use from now on to create our content (actually, @healing-winston-pratt already used it for her birthday drawings and I just stood there playing dumb pretending I didn’t have anything to do with it jssjjs). So, if you see that Callum and Winston are suddenly alive in our content or you find some of the things established in this list it’s because...yeah :)

As mentioned before , Leroy starts living with his daughter Nova and Winston, in a house provided by the State (The Council hee hee).

Callum and Winston are (evidently) alive, but Genissa is dead.

Ace, Evander and Honey remain dead.

And this is where our canon continues uwu.

Leroy has to do community service for like...indefinite time :)

Winston, on the other hand, has two jobs. Nova has a temporary resignation from patrolling and starts going to therapy, where she is diagnosed with PTSD.

Nova also helps with the establishment of a new system, modifies the recruitment system and that stuff.

She’s not in the Team Sketch full time. Sometimes she’s in the offices, and at night she works with Callum.

And just like Narcissa, she digs her own grave :)

Thing is: Nova suggested that every time a new recruit arrived, the Council had DNA samples taken from them so they could check if they had any crime attached to them.

Now, by the end of Supernova in the canon universe we elected to ignore it is mentioned that Maggie sees Leroy staring at her in the distance, in a very suspicious way. Now, we don’t know about y’all, but we interpreted this as Leroy noticing Maggie looks like young Nova XD. So, this does happen in our canon, when Leroy is already out of prison.

By this time, DNA samples from Maggie and Nova have already been taken and uploaded to the system; and let’s say that Leroy gets very...concerned about the lookalike and decides to tell Winston, who confirms Maggie looks a lot like Nova X’DDD and so, they reach out to the Council to ask them to pls compare Maggie’s samples to Nova’s. U know, like angry mothers at the principal’s office :)

And so they do it just because they have nothing to lose.

SO MAYBE, TO DOUBLE-CHECK, they compare Maggie’s DNA to DNA found in the crime scene (from David and Tala or maybe baby Maggie herself) and the results are still the same :).

Then, Winston and Leroy have to tell Nova and she reacts in the worst way possible for reasons I’ll explain in a fic I’ll be uploading soon cause’ I wrote it MONTHS ago.

Maggie doesn’t react much better tbh :)

But after a while, since this is, like, the right thing to do, Maggie starts living with them , but changes her name to Margaret Artino until she feels part of the family and is comfortable living there.

Because at first, Nova and her don’t get along and Maggie claims she fucking hates this house even though she knows is better than living in the streets.

They basically have a very chaotic home during the adaptation period until the girls start tolerating each other :) and even then, they’re still very chaotic bc it’s Winston, Leroy, Nova and Maggie we’re talking about :) :) :)

Not long after Maggie starts living with her big sis, Simon and Hugh ask Nova to join a family vacation and bring Maggie w/her.

Maggie doesn’t want to go, so Leroy and Winston go to Nova all like “If your sister doesn’t go, then you’re not going either” and Nova fucking loses it so she ends up begging/forcing Maggie to go :)

They go to the beach in MATCHING OUTFITS bc Simon said so (LIKE IN THE WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE MOVIE) :) they take a lot of embarrassing pictures and Nova and Adrian are forced to go in the banana boat with Max and Maggie.

They fall and Nova and Adrian are acting as if they were in the Titanic while Max and Maggie are having the time of their lives lmao

BC NOVA ALSO NEEDS BONDING WITH THE IN-LAWS

At some point, too, Maggie adopts a stray cat whom she names Tofu, and he fucking hates Carnival even though Carnival is the cutest thing :’)

Winston, Leroy, Nova and Maggie celebrate birthdays every year bc they’re trying to compensate years of trauma.

And for that same reason (compensating years of trauma), Nova and Maggie take their sweet time to move out.

Actually, Adrian meticulously plans the date when he’s gonna propose to Nova, so he asks her to move with him exactly a year before that.

They live in an apartment for that whole year, he proposes and they start planning the wedding uwu.

Nova and Adrian have a non-religious ceremony, and since they’re fucking extra, Nova gets married in a black dress and Adrian in a white tuxedo bc miss Artino wanted a dress the same color as her soul :)

Leroy walks Nova down the aisle.

Ruby is Nova’s Maid of Honor and Oscar is Adrian’s Best Man.

Max and Maggie have the rings.

Tamaya’s youngest son is the flower child.

Which, talking about Tamaya, she fucking hates Leroy and Nova bc, honestly, we would hate them too. Leroy fucked up her face and Nova was part of the terrorist attack lmao

SO, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW CHAOTIC THAT WEDDING WAS, bc they had to avoid leaving Tamaya and Leroy alone at all costs :)

She hugged Nova so violently when congratulating her, that she left a bruise in her shoulder :)

Basically she was there just because she loves Adrian even though she doesn’t approve his decision to marry Nova

Nova and Maggie maintain a close relationship even after Nova marries Adrian. Maggie and Max are included in every family vacation after the honeymoon ofc.

Nova and Maggie get matching tattoos uwu

Nova has the Big Dipper and Maggie has the Little Dipper.

As for the others. The ones who...are no longer there :’)

@healing-winston-pratt and I have this headcanon that Evander’s wife (we named her Sandra) was expecting a baby at the time of the battle. They had already chosen a first name (Arthur), so she used Evander as his middle name, as the baby didn’t get to meet his dad.

Arthur Evander Wade.

Winston finally gives Evander his DS back.

The Council, thanks to Nova’s suggestion once again, limited a specific area around Georgia’s spot and called it The Aisle of The Fallen.

Genissa, Honey and the victims of the attack to the Arena, the lift of the city and the battle of the Cathedral are there.

Sorry this is a few days delayed!Finally I’ve managed to answer these questions, and thank you for sending some in! I intended to go through the list they were from over the weekend and pick some interesting questions out to answer for funsies anyway (and still intend to when I have some time) but answering these ones seemed easier to do first :3

3: An OC I’ve never used for anything

I have a few, but I think I’d have to say Avery.

She has a (kind of?) backstory planned out, but nothing concrete. And because I’ve never really worked on her as extensively as I have other characters whom I spend more time on, she’s never really been used for anything. I haven’t really written anything for her, and I don’t know if I ever will. She’s just a fun self indulgent character I guess.

15: The least painful backstory I’ve given an OC

Looking at my character list I guess I’d have to say Lizbeth, although Origins somewhat writes her backstory for her and it includes … tragedy. I don’t really write characters that haven’t faced some kind of trouble or tragedy, mostly because I like to focus on how realistic and flawed they can be. If a character has no flaws, then I’m not really interested.

17: The easiest OC for me to write

Probably Oscar, because I’ve written so much for him by now that he feels a lot like coming home when it comes to writing things for him nowadays.I also find Natalia easy to write for at times, but I think that’s because I have such a clear understanding of what direction I want to take her story in and what paths she could possibly go down depending.

21: The OC most likely to end up in a wacky [freeze frame][record scratch] “you’re probably wondering how I got here” scenario

Oscar, most likely. That boy gets himself into a lot of trouble, both in canon universe and modern universe.

25: An OC I’ve changed a LOT

Although I haven’t gotten around to a lot of the rewrites, it’s Lizbeth.She was never called Lizbeth originally but rather Elissa. I have a really old story that I’ve written for her, and next year marks ten years since I first posted it online for her and I’ve been considering rewriting it and including all the changes I’ve made for her. Since more information has come out with later games and my own headcanon has for her and Alistair’s days as Grey Warden Commanders has changed from when I first worked on her I feel as if it would be nice to do her the justice of reworking part of her story so it fits her character a lot more. Lizbeth is special to me because I feel like she’s helped me see how far I’ve come in both character creation and writing over the years. She’s a lot more developed personality wise now, and in my opinion compared to how bland she had been in the past I think she’s come a long way herself.

27: Someone else’s OC that I really admire

Too. Fucking. Many.

Not to be cheesy on main, but I absolutely adore any character you create @flyppa. Ellana feels as close as a sister to Oscar in regards to how well I feel I know her from times you’ve spoken about her and in the stories you’ve written for her, and I don’t think Natalia would be half as interesting if she didn’t bash heads with Nikias as much as she does or have Kaeri there to help and guide her. I honestly can’t wait to see how Aranthos will interact once he gets to know Sylleth better, and what will happen when you introduce your bard to us!I also adore @delta-and-omega’s Reyna (she must be protected at all cost because the group she is surrounded by is much chaotic. very trouble) and again, can’t wait to see more of her Schmendrick (even if I do feel as if we’re going to meme too hard and end up hurting ourselves at some point via our characters!). Gaming and fandom wise … I’ve always loved @lindira’s Aeric Lavellan, and this heartbreaking yet beautiful characterisation of Meetra from KOTOR. Oh! And there’s @daydreamsonacloudyday’s Charlie Shepard, who I also enjoy seeing appear on my dash. The work gone into creating her is just fabulous, and I love reading her story. @rannadylin’s characters are also always so lovely to read about, and she has so many of them to love too!But honestly, I could sit here and gush about so many talented people I’ve met and spoken to on both this site and outside it over the years, or fangirl over favourite characterisations of original characters that I’ve found in fanfiction. Seeing people pour so much love and effort into their characters is honestly so heart warming, and I usually turn all ‘heart eyes, motherfucker’ when someone is telling me about their characters or I’m reading through a character page or something.

no one asked but it’s 3am and i’m sick so here are my final opinions/my review of descendants 3

- i did love the movie. but there was no way going into d3 that i would have disliked it to begin with since this franchise holds such a special place in my heart. the only way they would’ve made me hate it was if they gave doug too much screentime or made mal/harry canon but. they didn’t! so that alone was great

- the soundtrack isn’t my favorite of the three movies, but it isn’t my least favorite. my main issue with d3 is that, to me, the musical numbers didn’t flow with their scenes. one of my favorite things about d2 was that the songs flowed so well into their scenes that it felt natural and not out of place. with d3 it was almost like there was the scene and then the song, rather than the scene with the song. it was almost as if they threw songs into parts where they felt a song needed to be rather than making the song integral to what was happening. the only songs that are exceptions to this imo are night falls (which is perfect in every way possible; flow, continuing the action of the movie, etc), good to be bad (although this is the opening musical number so it’s hard to screw that up) and break this down MAYBE (but like the opening, it’s the finale). queen of mean is my favorite song from the soundtrack but the entire scene feels like a music video meant to be posted on youtube. the once upon a time song is so sudden and feels disconnected from the climax of the movie and takes away from the entire scene. d2 in comparison does a great job at intertwining the songs with its scenes (it’s goin down is probably the prime example, with what’s my name and space between being honorable mentions). it was also weird to me that in some cases they seemed aware that they were beginning a musical number? i know that do what you gotta do was meant to be very meta (mostly because hades has always been a comedic and satirical disney character and that’s what makes him so likable) but it felt weird to me because none of the other movies have really broken the 4th wall in that way.

- the characterization of mal threw me off. maybe it’s because the writers knew how they wanted the plot to go, so they just made mal do whatever was necessary for the plot to progress. or maybe they wanted mal to fit a certain role in this movie. idk what it was but she felt different in this movie and even though she was supposed to be the main focus of the movie she didn’t really stand out. the other VKs and audrey were as good as they could be in a movie where they’re constantly sidelined, and i feel like evie/jay/carlos/uma/audrey had really good moments. hades was also written really well and i loved him, but it also seemed like the inclusion of his character was mostly for plot device reasoning and to progress the story, so he was suddenly thrown in and was hardly given any actual purpose besides enabling mal.

- audrey being a villain was executed well in the first half of the movie. she built up a lot of hype and brought a really interesting flare to the storyline. but in the second half she kind of... fizzled out. like, okay, she put everyone to sleep and turned some people to stone in the first half but what did she do in the second half of the movie? lock chad in a closet? threaten celia? she didn’t really do anything, the stakes weren’t really raised in a compelling way, and it felt like she was kind of just.... running around casting spells and being chaotic rather than being a MAIN villain. but i still love her so much and i feel like sarah jeffrey stole the show with her acting and execution of evil audrey despite the writers failing her.

- the ending was a cute send off to the franchise, but i feel like the sudden “let’s just bring down the barrier” moment was... weird? yeah the VKs deserve a chance in auradon and stuff but there are still dangerous villains that want revenge on the isle. you’re not even gonna set up new security? laws? regulations? some kind of organizing to make bringing down the barrier less chaotic? like, it wasn’t realistic. but it’s a dcom and the final movie of a trilogy so they had to find a way to end it in a big celebratory way, which... i guess you can’t criticize too much. bc again, it’s a dcom.

- oddly enough, i think GIL of all people got some of the best character development along with uma

- sofia carson outperformed everyone with her acting but absolutely no one is surprised. “you lied to jay. you lied to carlos.... you lied to me.” give her her oscar already. fuck

- i actually liked jane in this movie? interesting concept

- introducing celia was cute and she was actually pretty relevant in the plot, but you could have legit removed dizzy and the twins from the entire movie and nothing would have changed. so...

- huma should have been endgame and i’m NOT just saying that as a huma stan. they gave us the build up, they gave us scenes and hints and built their chemistry even further in d3 and then said... nevermind! but i won’t trash on harry/audrey bc there’s no reason to dislike it

- i thought the very final scene where they run across the bridge was THE perfect closing to the movie and despite the whole barrier shenanigans i thought it was a really heartfelt and satisfying way to say goodbye to descendants, these characters & the cast <3

so i saw newsies twice this weekend at my local community college

these are some important things from each show

first of all their jack looked exactly like jerjor?? he was so good

like when i first saw him i was like Huh is that baby jeremy jordan? little teenage jerjor?

anyway crutchie was also very cute he had a pretty face and fluffy brown hair and fuck my uwus

they kinda rushed their lines throughout but it was all kids and not like a Pro Production so,, i’m lettin em off the hook for tht

the santa fe prologue was so,, pretty and lyrical just like in the soundtrack i was yellin

also this is when i’ll note there’s two string players in the pit and the violin is my orchestra teacher at school so i got to say “YOU SUCK” when i saw her at intermission before raving abt how AMAZING SHE IS LIKE DUDE SHE’S THE ONLY VIOLIN OUT OF TWELVE PEOPLE AND SHE CARRIED SO WELL

race was so short?? he was very short and very chaotic

also he wore a big red flannel and i was like “thts definitely not his” and i’ll get to this again later

albert was also very short and had a higher voice (race’s was surprisingly deep) and i was ,, he’s so cute albert was very cute

ALSO SPECS WAS A GIRL. SHE WAS THE BEST CAST MEMBER.

carrying the banner had so much! energy! and they did a bit of the original choreo from the live recording it was rlly good

romeo was very very tall like i went out after the show and i hit his shoulders (i’m 5’9”.)

so many pirouettes. so much jumping over each other.

oscar was very very tall?? and morris was rlly short i was like Whoa!

also oscar was triple cast as jacobi and the guy jack sells davey’s pape to he was so talented

crutchie was so sweet. he was so sweet.

davey was so awkward in his vest and tie and button-up

and les was so EXPRESSIVE the whole time he was so talented

they all only got like 1-2 papes each but thts bc they only had one stack to grab from so it was ok but it was funny when jack counted davey’s one pape over and over again before WHOA NEW KID’S RIGHT

i’m sayin this now. i’m so sorry to the ppl i sat beside and in front of bc i went feral through the whole thing

also i’m sorry to ethan for going feral On him bc i’d grab his hand when i got rlly excited so i didn’t Flap Flap Flap and Kick Time

pulitzer was so tall and proud and his stage presence,, wow

ALSO SEITZ WAS PLAYED BY A GIRL AND I YELLED

she and hannah were very cute and seitz’s dress was so PRETTY

Did RWBY already, but here’s the other two

When I started shipping them: like immediately with the wink and their team-up in volume one. “Leave her alone” killed me

My thoughts: they’re just so gooooooooood ugh so perfect

What makes me happy about them: the way that the compliment each other and how that changes them for the better (see v5)

What makes me sad about them: this is hard to think of. I guess maybe the fact that they’ve had to fight so hard to get to where they are together, and when they have to confront each other which is necessary but often leads to sadness

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I uhhhh…haven’t read any blacksun fanfic. If I did though, it would probably be mischaracterization or sappiness cause they aren’t a sappy couple

Things I look for in fanfic: sticking to the characters’ personalities and accurate interactions, cute teasing and small gestures of affection

My wishlist: so many things. Become canon first of all. First kiss, that cute teasing I was talking about, sharing backstories from their childhoods, Blake helping Sun with his problems like he helped her, the rest of team SSSN adopting Blake like a sister

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: with Blake, maybe Weiss because of the faunus/Schnee impact. With Sun, maybe Neptune? Outside canon though, Sun and Ruby would be adorable and chaotic (shoutout to Michael and Lindsay)

My happily ever after for them: save the world, get married, have a rowdy bunch of little faunus babies, and be the best leaders the new White Fang has ever seen

How I feel about this character: I really like her. I love her quirkiness and social awkwardness but also her ability to stand up and take the lead when its needed. She’s grown a lot but still has a long way to go, so I’m interested to see where the story takes her

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: my biggest ship would probably be with Oscar

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: I’ve gotta go with Yang. I love their sister moments and I wish there was more of that

My unpopular opinion about this character: she’s too optimistic sometimes. She often has the mentality that things will just work out, but that’s not how the world works. Sometimes she should just step back, assess her situation, and think, not just run in headfirst

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish her silver eye powers had taken longer to develop. Maybe there should be a scene later on where the power doesn’t work, so she realizes that she can’t rely on it all the time

Favorite friendship for this character: Ruby is friend-shaped. I can’t pick just one because she’s just so befriendable

My crossover ship: okay this isn’t a ship but somehow I feel like she’d get along well with Leo Valdez from Heroes of Olympus
