Rock Salt – WIP Intro
Tumblr media
hello again! on today’s news, your girl has a new wip aka something to fixate on and mould her life around for the next couple of months (or years). and because i cannot keep any exciting news to myself, here’s a wip intro.
but before we head into that, here’s a little backstory to how it happened. i finished writing dairy whiskey, i worried about my brain being incapable of forming new book ideas, two to three days after i get this new book idea that i’m totally hooked on, struggles to find a name, names it, decides to go forward with it, so again, here it is – rock salt!
here are the specifics:
disclaimer: this is an original work of fiction. plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated. don’t be a pathetic loser.
genre: literary fiction
pov: first person retrospective
structure: probably going to be just full-length chapters
projected word count: 50k
concept: identical twins rain and norah move out of their family home for college where they purse two different degrees, live with different people in separate homes, and fall in troubles of their own. these begin to affect each other and they grow apart, being forced to navigate the the most confusing part of their lives – their shared existence as twins.
aesthetics/vibes: indigo skies, the beach, moths, seawater, salty breeze, chopping off one’s hair because existential crisis and queerness, lesbian relationships, house parties, fire, gloomy days where you feel like it’s going to rain but it doesn’t, cheap housing, bad grades, rotten food in the fridge, the moon, hanging plants, weed and local flowers
CHARACTERS
if you’ve heard these names before, no you haven’t, but again, they’re from twinepathy – the short story i wrote nearly three years back and scrapped afterwards. i tried to create new characters for this book but they feel like the perfect fit, so here they are.
norah
18
lesbian, she/they
her real name is eleanor
the protagonist and the narrator
studies political science
shoulder-length black hair, dark brown eyes, 5'3, skinny, wheat-coloured skin
always wears basic t-shirts or sweatshirts with a pair of mom jeans
distant, secretive, in constant disapproval of everything
strives on academic validation (and is being too hard on herself to bring in good grades)
rain
also 18
aroace, she/her
her real name is lorraine
studies painting and the applied arts
long black hair, dark brown eyes, 5'3, skinny, wheat-coloured skin
is a goofball, sunshine and rainbows, has a lot of friends, is extremely talented in her art, golden retriever energy with some drama to be unleashed
cannot keep her mouth shut so ends up in trouble with norah
don’t want to introduce them officially, because they’re not key characters, but here’s a little info on their older sisters –
harper
23
is called harp
is a high school geography teacher
engaged to her college boyfriend
oldest child in an asian household (i guess that’s saying enough)
violet
21
is called viv
the neglected middle child
in her last year of a nursing degree
wanted to study music but was too scared to bring it up to her parents and ended up being stuck at a hospital
plans to go abroad and marry a rich guy
well, that’s all i’ve got for you today. i haven’t started writing this book yet and i think i won’t until i finish editing dairy whiskey in august. i think i’ll start in september and then hopefully do nanowrimo for it in november. i’m super excited to work on it because it’s so different from dairy whiskey in a lot of aspects. but i’m discovery writing (as always) and we’ll just have to see where it goes. but until i come back with an update for this book, you take care, stay hydrated, water your plants, and eat a second dessert tonight.

Word count: 690 words
Summary: You finally met.
Warning: You are awesome and can’t shut up
A/N: Here we go!!!
Coments, Reblogs and Asks are happily received! I love to read your lovely coments :)
Tumblr media
You hated the beach with so much passion, being under the sun, surrounded by loud families being annoying, the smell of salt in the air, the weird feeling of sand on your feet, you just couldn’t help to hate it.
You were sitting under an umbrella completely dressed up, a pair of jeans, boots and a tank top, people were giving you weird looks and you just responded with a sarcastic smile and the middle finger. One mother even went full crazy mode and demanded you to leave because you were making her kids uncomfortable.
You just laughed on her face before putting on your sunglasses, but that didn’t end up there, the moment the lady left you alone, you made all the birds go to where she and her family were and let’s just say it was a magnific poop party.
As soon as sun started to set and everybody began going home, you got comfortable on your spot, watching your watch moving slowly. Last night you had a dream, you were finally meeting the man of your dreams (literally), after his horrible attempt of healing himself, you made a huge bag with the necessities you would need to help him correct his mistakes and scars. You sighed, terribly tired from today. Just another 3 hours more. Jesus Christ.
You couldn’t help to fall asleep, today was a tiring day, the first thing you did when you open up your eyes was to look at your watch, you smirked, four minutes and fifty-two seconds until you both met. So you waited.
He got off the waters, his tan skin beautifully wet, his eyes dark just like you saw them before, pointy ears, fun and tiny little wings on one of his feet? What?
You quickly stood up and walked to him. You didn’t have a plan. “Hey!”
The men stood still, watching you with hard eyes. His hand gripped his spear harshly.
“So,” You put your hands on your pockets. “Coming here often? Let me tell you, I don’t know how you do it but living closer to a beach? Awful. Name’s (Y/N).” You offered your hand but he stared at you like you were mad. I mean you are. “Right, not so talkative, are we? Well, meh.” You shrugged. “Well don’t worry, my therapist says I speak for everyone, like literally I never shut up.”
“Leave.” He demanded before turning away and walking to the waters.
“Rude.” You told yourself, running to catching up with him. “So, you’re from the water, right? That’s cool, I’m from Salem, you know, the land of the witches and spells.”
He ignored you.
“So, we should like talk about us, you know?” That made him stop, he looked at you like you were crazy. You shrugged. “I mean, destiny put us together, y’know? Like look at this.” You raised your left hand and a red string quickly appeared on one of your fingers, another appeared on one of his fingers. “We should talk about it…so, where do you live? You live under the water like nemo? That’s cool, don’t worry you go ahead, I’ll catch up with you, babe.” You patted his back before going to where you were sitting.
He stared at you without knowing what to say.
______
“So this is were you live, pretty cool, I like the rock collection, really aesthetic, y’know?” That was the first thing you said as you entered the cave where he lived. He was standing there startled at how you arrived. “Where should I put my bag?” You wiggled it. “It’s heavy.”
“What is this?” He whispered, taking a few steps closer to you.
“Yeah, that’s a portal, sorry for not coming sooner but you know how faith is, everything needs to happened at an exact moment, sorry for your back I mean it sucks how you fixed it but still a good attempt, want me to patch you up better? I’m really good at it.”
“Who are you?” He confusedly asked you.
You smiled, letting the bag hit the floor and offering a smile. “Well, Namor of Talokan…meet your soulmate!” You exclaimed, your arms opening in happiness.

A/N: Lizzzz (@juneberrie, because idk how much you're on your old account anymore), I love that idea!!! And I really adored writing this, even though I think I may have branched out a bit. Ik ik, the song is a bit ambiguous when it comes to happy ending or not, but I can't write too much Jesper angst or I'll cry, so have this. As always, thank you so much for requesting this, and I hope you like it <333 Also, how are y'all liking my new post aesthetic?
Summary: The reader is tired of waiting for Jesper to figure his feelings out, but letting him go isn't an option either.
Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff
Word Count: 3.7K
Warnings: alcohol, getting drunk, love, possible reaction, happy endings (yuck)
Tumblr media
"You're drinking alone? Without me?" Your reason for choosing to get drunk alone in the first place appeared in front of you all of a sudden. Even though the Crow Club was filled to the brim with gamblers, he still had managed to spot you, and now he was here to make you regret ever leaving the safety of your room. Sometimes you wondered if he did all of this just to purposefully vex you.
"Drinking alone sort of implies not having any company, Jesper.” You murmured, taking another sip from your glass of whiskey, avoiding his gaze as best as you could. But of course, the Saints weren’t merciful enough to grant you some peace and quiet. Without asking, he took the drink from your hands and put it to his lips. The same glass that touched your lips only mere seconds earlier. Well, also the same lips that were on yours only mere hours earlier. Saints.
“I guess we’ll have to change that.” It was then that you noticed the slight slur in his speech. He had already been tipsy before coming here, that was probably the only reason for him to talk to you right now. “Why don’t you come and join me at the card table? I could need a lucky charm.” His tone was distinctly flirtatious, and normally you would have instantly latched on to every syllable, but not now. Not after today.
“Sorry, Jesper. I’m not really in the mood for your games right now.” The double entendre went unnoticed considering he solely seemed to care about the missed opportunity of having you sit around while he gambles away the majority of his money. The corners of his mouth were turned downwards as he gave you an almost tortured groan in reaction to your rejection. And as much as you would have liked to accompany him, being close to him - this close to him - was not going to work.
“Not even for half an hour? I always play better when you’re around.” A wink followed his questionable statement, but you were set on not allowing him to lure you in again.
“Nope. Go and ask Wylan. He’d probably be up for it.” Wow, great work. Now you really ruined it for yourself with your bitterness.
“Wylan’s not into all of that. And Wylan also isn’t you.” Saints, how much you wanted to punch him in his perfectly straight teeth just to swipe that awfully smug look off his face.
“Jesper, I just don’t feel like joining you today.”
“Oh come on, Y/N. After that job today I’m in need of a pick-me-up. Please?” Something inside you snapped at that point. Why couldn’t he just take a damn hint and leave you alone for once?
“And I’m in the need to get drunk and not be bothered by someone that doesn’t even know what he wants!” You wanted to take back the words as soon as they left your mouth. His behaviour was incredibly infuriating, however, that didn’t give you permission to lash out at him, nor to blame him for your feelings. You didn’t dwell on that sentiment for too long though, since before he could even begin to give you any type of response, you stood up and made your way towards the exit. He didn’t follow.
This man would eventually be the death of you if you didn’t
You hated the way he made you feel. The way every smile and touch coming from him made your heart spin. The way he always came to be at your side whenever you needed it. The way he put his arms around you so casually, even when it made your heart double its pace. Every single happy or comforting memory you had of him was terribly tainted by the fact that he just could be clear with his intentions.
The two of you had always been close, that was no secret. He was flirty, touchy and quite possibly one of the worst people to have a crush on. At first, the flirting between you had been completely innocent - as innocent as Jesper’s jokes could be - but over time, there seemed to be some hint of truth behind every cheeky comment or whispered flattery. You saw it in the glint of his eyes or the change of his breathing whenever you would reciprocate his advances.
However, Jesper was also terribly brash and constantly chasing a new high. He didn’t settle, or even show any interest in doing so. Love was a gamble and he was an addict. But just like every other addict, he could never have enough. And you were starting to get tired of waiting for him to figure it out. Because in contrast to him, your feelings were more than clear. You had confessed them to him after a drunken night out, and couldn’t look him straight in the eyes for weeks after that. He didn’t give you a concrete answer after that, only making it his mission to close your tab and bring you back home safely. Much to your surprise, that barely changed the relationship you had. His flirty comments did get a bit more genuine, but you just chalked his behaviour up to being the softest way to let you down. You should have been thankful for him not brutally crushing you with the inevitable rejection, but at the same time, him stringing you along like this only managed to agitate you more. You weren’t sure whether you just wanted him to outright tell you that he didn’t feel the same or whether you wanted to stay in the feeling of blissful ignorance induced by his teasing.
Today’s job had only been the icing on top of the cake.
“Why do we always have to be the decoy? Handsome decoy is not a Jesper talent.” The sharpshooter whined as he fumbled with the buttons of his emerald green vest. It looked a bit too tight for him, yet, he still pulled the look off amazingly well. If you hadn’t known that there were two revolvers tucked away in the holsters of his trousers, you wouldn’t have even begun to question his presence at this merchant’s banquet.
“But you do it so beautifully, Jes.” You grinned, giving him a playful slap to his biceps, which was even more pronounced by the tight white shirt he wore underneath his jacket. If Kaz would be listening in on your conversation, he would probably give both of you a whack with his cane and tell you to focus on the job at hand.
“I’m aware, but doing something beautifully isn’t the same as doing something skillfully.”
“That almost sounds like you’re talking about your attempts at flirting.”
“I beg your pardon? My flirting is as skilled as it can be, thank you very much! And for your information, flirting isn’t easy. Especially if it’s your job.” He explained, an overly serious expression on his face.
“Of course. It must be very hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pick-up line.”
“Brutal.”
You laughed, hoping that other people wouldn’t catch on to your ill-fitting jolly mood. Thankfully, you were only there to stand watch and not to do the actual dirty work. You were certain that wouldn’t have ended well for any of you. But from where you were standing, close to one of the three entrances to the banquet hall, no one did necessarily care about you. At least not until now.
Inej’s voice coming up from behind you almost made you pull out the dagger strapped to your leg, but Jesper was quick to seize your upper arm. Something seemingly went wrong, judging by her guarded expression, and you were on the edge to find out what she wanted to tell you.
“I have the intel.” Her breathing was ragged, as she threw unnerved glances behind her now and then. “They have seen me and I’m very very sure that they know who we are. We have to leave, but we can’t take the same route. You take this entrance, and I go out through the west one.”
“Inej, we-”
“No. Go.” With that, she had already disappeared into the crowd of wealthy sellers and merchants that still seemed to be utterly oblivious to what had just happened.
“Saints, Kaz’s attitude has been rubbing off on her,” Jesper grumbled, his hand still on your upper arm, only with a way softer grip. You couldn’t spend too much time appreciating his humour, since as soon as you let your eyes fly over the room again, you spotted three men in uniform crossing the hall. Even though they hadn’t seen you yet, they were definitely making their way towards your entrance.
“I think it’s time to go.” You yanked his hand away from your shoulder and took it in your own, before hurrying out the door. The Stadwatch was fast. Way faster than the two of you. And if they caught sight of your faces, you could only pray.
“What are you doing?” Jesper hissed, as he tried to keep up with your pace. The mansion was a maze and it was best to move through it as quickly as you could.
“Stadwatch. They’re coming towards us.”
“Stadwatch? Are you insane? We can never outrun them!” He slowed down ever so slightly, hanging onto you like an anchor.
“We have to try, Jes. Unless you have the intention of sleeping in a cosy cell in Hellgate tonight.”
“No, we can’t outrun them, Y/N. We have to hide.”
“Hide? Jesper, are you mad? Where do you want to hide?”
“Not where. How.” He retorted, pulling you into a rather secluded corridor as you heard steady footsteps approaching. Your back hit the cold cold wall whilst Jesper towered over you, his chest flushed against yours. His head was cocked slightly to the side in order to have a better view of the Stadwatch approaching. When they seemed to be only a few moments away from seeing you, he turned to look at you.
“Just play along.” He whispered, his hot breath fanning over your face, which was mere inches away from meeting yours. Your hands were on his upper arms in an attempt to put a bit of distance between you, however, that seemed to be the complete opposite of what he had in mind.
“Play along with wh-” You didn’t even get to finish your sentence before his lips clashing against yours cut you off. Everything happened so quickly that your brain just stopped working. His hands lingered on your waist, and the longer the kiss lasted, the dizzier you felt. You had to force your eyes shut to not get too invested in it. Kissing him was something you had always wanted to do, but now that it was finally happening, you didn’t know what to do with yourself.
Just play along.
You recalled his words. Up until this second, your hands were still on his arms, looking as if you were close to pushing him away. Without thinking about it, you threw your arms around his neck, pulling him even closer into the kiss, which you were now actively returning. As you did, you heard a muffled yelp coming from his mouth.
The steps that had been approaching slowed down as they passed you, but they didn’t stop. You felt your heartbeat speed up, and through the close proximity to Jesper, you could feel his heart doing the same. When the rhythmic clomping of their boots eventually became inaudible, he pulled away, leaning to the side in order to peek out into the adjacent hallway. His hands didn’t let go of your waist as he assessed your chances of getting out unnoticed, and you were thankful for that. You imagined that if he would dare to let go, your knees would probably give in.
“We’re in the clear.” He huffed, turning his face back to you with a devious grin. You saw him sober up a bit as he looked down at your dumbfounded face. Of course this meant nothing to him, you thought. He could continue on with his day just as if nothing happened, while you were left with the situation playing on repeat in your head. “Are you alright?”
“Yes. Just a bit dizzy.” You breathed. He was still close. Too close.
“I have that effect on people.” He didn’t give you much time to recuperate before reaching for your hand again and rushing towards the exit.
The kiss wouldn’t leave your mind, no matter how hard you tried to forget. You could still feel the pressure of his hands on your waist and taste the bitter tang of kvas on his lips. Running away from him didn’t necessarily help the knife twisting in your chest.
Since you couldn’t bear the feeling of loneliness that you got in your room, you resorted to the only retreat you knew - the roof. It was a stupid idea. Inej would have probably called you daft for going out there at night, especially not during fall. The roof was slippery and it wasn’t unlikely for the wind to pick up. But you just needed to be alone. Completely alone.
Without much thought, you sat down on one of the flat platforms, not caring about the way the wet tiles dampened your clothes. You looked down onto the streets of Ketterdam, focussing on all the little details. They weren’t what one would call crowded, however, enough drunkards and gamblers still staggered through the streets, either to find their way home or to find their way back to the next pub. You would give everything to just be in the shows of some poor drunk bastard whose only worry was what drink he should order next.
“You really have lost your mind, didn’t you?” A shaky voice emerged from a hatch that led out to the rooftop. You angled your head to look at the person wobbling over the slick tiles to get closer to you. Jesper wasn’t particularly fond of climbing or doing tasks that would rather be fit for Inej, so he obviously wasn’t very good at it. You would also suggest that he may have a fear of heights, which he vehemently denied.
“Get off the roof before you fall.” You demanded, anxiously watching him as he threatened to lose his balance.
“Will you join me inside if I do?”
“No, but-”
“Then it’s not happening, love.” You scooted a bit to the side, as he reached the scaffold, giving him some space to calm down. The light up here was pretty sparse and only now you could that he had immensely dressed down from what he wore before. Well, it was a dress-down for Jesper Fahey. He had removed his vest and most of the usual accessories, only being left with his white dressing shirt, brown suspended pants and the thick coat that had always been a little bit too baggy on him.
“Jesper,” You started but didn’t continue. What would you say? How could you even begin to apologize for your embarrassing outburst?
“Do you have any idea how cold it is up here?” You hadn’t even noticed the numbness of your fingers or the constant clattering of your teeth. It was a distraction, that was now completely unnecessary. He sat down next to you, eying you as if he was looking at a ghost. And as if he had to convince himself that you were, in fact, alive, his hand moved to touch yours. He flinched as his warm fingers met yours. You really must feel frigid. “Saints, you’re freezing.” Jesper shrugged off his jacket without a second thought, draping it over your shoulders and not giving in to your meek form of protest.
“Jesper, please.” What were you asking for? For him to leave you alone? For him to stop this lovey-dovey caring act? For him to finally reject you? “Please let me be alone for a bit.”
“I should leave you out here alone? To get sick? To fall off the roof? Absolutely not.” He rambled, scanning over your features, worry embedded in his gaze. “If you don’t want me to talk about it, I won’t talk. That’s fine, we can be lonely together. But I’m not letting you be miserable on top of a roof without supervision.” Why was he so damn complicated?
“Talk.” The word left your mouth before you could stop it.
“What?”
“Just…talk about whatever you came here to talk about. Talk, ask, yell, do whatever you want. Just get it over with, please.” Even though he definitely wasn’t pleased with your current sentiments, he gave you a subtle nod.
“I’m sorry if I upset you by asking you to join me earlier. You looked so unhappy, and I thought that it might cheer you up. I didn’t mean to be so stubborn.” Why was he the one to apologize to you now?
“You have nothing to be sorry for, Jes.” You sighed, facing him fully to at least grant him that decorum. The moonlight made him look ethereal. His gray eyes, which were still surrounded by an uneasy frown, basically pierced through you. Only the most prominent of his features were illuminated by the blue-ish light, making him look like some sort of mystical being. The fact that someone looking like him was currently preparing to reject you would make things a bit easier, you hoped. “I was a bit overwhelmed and I didn’t react properly. It’s not your fault.”
“Y/N, what is going on? Did I say something you didn’t like? If you tell me what it was I’ll stop.” Well, depends if kissing me and then just acting like nothing happened counts. “You started avoiding me after the job today and I don’t know what-” Realization dawned on him as he cut himself off. This was the part where you’d get hurt.
“It has nothing to do with you, I-”
“It was the kiss, wasn’t it?” An unfamiliar emotion travelled over his face, as he began to put two and two together. “I promise that I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, that was never my intention. It was just a means to an end and I’ll stop the flirting if that is what would make you feel better.”
“That’s the problem.” You whispered, not thinking that he would be able to hear it.
“What do you mean?”
Maybe it was time to rip off that bandaid.
“Maybe the fact that the kiss basically meant nothing to you is my problem. Your flirting isn’t the issue, it’s that you do it without feeling anything whilst doing it. I just need you to tell me that you don’t feel the same and then I can move on. But I can’t keep going like this. It’s driving me insane.”
“Feel the same? What are you saying?” This was not going well, was it? How could he be so oblivious?
“I love you, Jesper, okay? I love you, and it kills me that you continue to act as if we could just go on like normal whilst ignoring that fact.”
“You love me?” He looked shocked. Why the fuck did he look shocked?
“Yes? I already told you months ago?” Was he seriously toying with you while you were close to tears?
“You were drunk, I thought…I thought you didn’t mean it!”
“If everything we said whilst being drunk had been a lie, we would barely know each other.” You commented bitterly, waiting for his reaction.
Jesper smiled. Not an uncomfortable or polite smile, but a real toothy grin. A smile that he would normally have after coming back from a successful heist or after winning a round of Three Man Bramble once in a while. Also a smile he wouldn’t just give anyone.
“So the only reason for you being distant after kissing me was because you thought that I didn’t like you back?”
“Way to rub it in, Jesper.”
“And I thought that you just didn’t want to kiss me.” Saints, how you wanted to wipe that self-satisfied grin off his face…
“I didn’t. Not like that. Not when I know that the feelings are one-sided.” You replied groggily. Sometimes you hated how easy it was for him to wind you up. “And you’re really not making things any-”
You felt a tug at the collar of his coat, gently pulling you closer to him. It was almost like a déjà vu - him cutting you off in the middle of a sentence. But this time, it seemed to be completely genuine. Again, his hands moved under his jacket to hold onto your waist, the warmth of his palms giving you a certain fuzzy feeling in the pit of your stomach. With much less hesitation than the last time, you reached for the nape of his neck, only diving deeper into the kiss. His lips felt warm against yours a stark contrast to the harsh wind that previously assaulted you.
Even though you would’ve wanted the kiss to continue forever, at some point it was time for you to break apart. Your eyes were still closed when you pulled away, fearful that all of this would prove to be one of his cruel little games.
“Did you prefer it like that?” He asked, enticing you to slowly peel open your eyes. His eyebrows were raised as he stared at you expectantly.
“Does that mean that…”
“Yes. Since I assume that my constant flirting wasn’t enough to make that clear, I am in love with you, too.” He chuckled, giving you an incredulous look as if it had been more than obvious that he felt that way.
“It’s not exactly that obvious when you flirt with basically everyone.”
“Do you want me to kiss you again? Just to make my point clear, of course.”
“I think I’m in need of some more convincing so that would probably be a good way to bring your point across.”
“How could I deny you?” He smirked, his eyes drifting from your eyes to your lips before another gust of wind caused him to shiver. “But we’re definitely going inside after. I’m not in the mood to become a walking icicle.”

Antonio Dawson x fem!reader
Summary: You have saved countless of people during your time as a lifeguard, but never had you saved someone like Antonio..
Wordcount: 974
Warnings: None
A/N: Despite the picture of the girl in the top left, the reader is written totally neutral when it comes to race and body type. the girl in the picture just really fit the aesthetic
You have been a lifeguard for over ten years now and over the years, you’ve developed quite the eye. Like officers are able to read people and situations, you read everyone like a book here at your beach. And some people just have that vibe over them, telling you non verbally they will either drown or get in trouble sooner rather than later.
You witnessed families together, friends together and pro surfers defying the waters. It was all well, but you knew that it would change. You just felt it.
‘Miss, miss!’
The sound of distress. The start of a rescue.
You looked up and saw two teens, a girl and a younger boy, obviously related to one another, made their way over to you. ‘What’s wrong?’ you asked.
‘Our dad,’ the girl said. ‘I think he’s drowning.’
You stretched out your neck, grabbing your binoculars and searched the waters.
And there he was.
However, this man hadn’t been on your ‘Probably a drowner’-list. He hadn’t even been on a list at all. Maybe he wasn’t necessarily drowning, but he was quite far from shore.
‘Stay here,’ you said, as you made your way over to your rescue board. You rushed towards the edge of the ocean, before you dared to defy the waters.
You grew up near the coast. Your parents being surfers and your father being a lifeguard all his life had contributed to your love for the beach. You adored the coast, you loved to surf and being a lifeguard appeared to be a dream come true for you.
You paddled your way over to the man, who appeared fatigued, but somehow managed to keep his head above the water. Once you were closing in, you grabbed him by the arm. ‘I’ve got you,’ you said. ‘Hold onto the board.’
He latched on, desperately trying to catch his breath.
‘You alright?’
‘I’m fine,’ he said. ‘My kids, are they okay?’
‘They’re fine, sir. They’re on the beach. Go catch a breath and we’ll go back to shore, okay?’
He rubbed his face as he awkwardly laughs. ‘This is really embarrassing,’ he noted.
‘Don’t be embarrassed. You’re like the fifth person I saved today,’ you said with a smile. ‘Please, it can happen to anyone.’ Even to guys who look this attractive, because goodness me, are you a stunner. Your eyes wandered of the tattoos on his toned arms, but then you realized ogling at someone you rescued is extremely inappropriate and unprofessional.
‘Alright, climb on the board, head to the front and we’ll get you to shore.’
The paddle back was absolutely testing you and your ability to control yourself, because having his ass up your face, was torture.
‘Dad, are you alright?’ the boy asked, who hugged him close as soon as his dad was on shore again.
‘Diego, I’m fine,’ he said, before hugging his daughter. ‘Eva, you okay?’
‘I’m okay now that you’re okay.’ She—the girl who apparently was named Eva—looked over at you. ‘You’re so awesome,’ she told me. ’Thank you for saving my dad.’
You shook your head. ‘It’s no problem. It’s my job. Just keep an eye on your old man, ‘kay?’
‘Will do,’ Eva said with a chuckle.
‘We just moved here,’ Diego continued, ‘from Chicago. We’re not used to this much beach and the ocean like this. We’ll never get out in the water that deep again.’
‘Atta boy,’ you chuckled. ‘Listen to that one,’ you told the father. ‘He’s got his head on straight.’
┕━»•» 🌊«•«━━━━━┙
As the day had come to an end and the beach was slowly but surely going empty, you sat with your colleagues in the lifeguard tower. There was a knock on the door, before it opened slightly. ‘Excuse me,’ you heard and when you looked up, you saw the man you saved earlier today, flanked by his two children.
‘Hi,’ you said, standing up from your seat. ‘How are you feeling?’
‘I’m good, thanks.’
‘And dad listened to me,’ Diego said. ‘He didn’t go in too deep in the water.’
‘Very good,’ you laughed. ‘To what do we owe this pleasure?’
‘Just wanted to thank you,’ the dad was quick to say, though it’s hard to miss the dissatisfaction on Eva’s face. ‘That’s all.’
‘It’s my job,’ you told him, though you secretly hoped he was going to ask you out.
The three of them said their goodbyes and went away. You leaned in the door, as you stared at them. Maybe it was for the best, you thought.
When you wanted to close the door, you heard: ‘Miss, hold up!’ It was Eva who made her way back to you, leaving her father and brother to wait. ‘My dad actually wanted to ask you out,’ she told you once she was close enough, ‘however he chickened out.’
‘I see,’ you chuckled. You grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down both your name and number on it. ‘Go give this to your dad and have him call me, okay?’
Her eyes lit up. ‘Really? That is fantastic! Thank you, I’ll give it to him straight away!’
She rushed back to her father and brother and handed him the piece of paper. He looked at it, before a smile appeared on his face. He held up the paper and you gave him a wave.
Maybe you rescued the right person at the right time today.
┕━»•» 🌊«•«━━━━━┙
Unknown number: Hi, I literally have no idea how to do it, but if I won’t do it, Eva and Diego will personally come back to the tower to ask you out for me, so I better do it myself. Would you like to go out with me sometime? Preferably not near any water, as we both learned today I’m not at my best near the ocean. Lemme know. Antonio

Can we know more about your Croatia?
DA! Of course!! Thank you for the ask:-)
Tumblr media
Here’s a summary of my Croatias main aspects!
(Before I talk about him, I gotta say that my main inspirations for Croatia are Hidekazs incredibly short introduction of a design, my own experiences with Croatian folk, and some historical stuff that molded Croatia (and it’s stereotypes) to be the way they are today. Of course since I’m not really croatian myself, I can’t really say how accurate I depicted him, but I hope you enjoy it anyways xaxa)
1: His general personality; Croatia is a charismatic man with a high ego. He prides himself in his newer, cleaner aesthetic that he acquired after joining the EU, though it’s mostly just a well-kept façade. Under this façade he has some alcohol and drug problems, which he only shows to other balkaners. Admittedly, the drug problem does slip sometimes when he goes on coke-induced rants, dropping his EU-branding momentarily. He is quite the asshole to most of his neighbours, of which he is frenemies with.
2: Touristic integrity; Croatia loves nothing more than his beaches. He tries his best to take good care of them so the Germans and Brits who go on Vacation in the summer are enjoying it enough to come back. Though when the summer is over, he isn’t as happy and well-adjusted as usual; with the lack of tourism he gains some sort of seasonal depression, where he gets incredibly irritable and pissy.
Tumblr media
3: Fudbal Freak; An incredibly huge hooligan, loving this sport to death. Don’t let him get a Penalty. He will get hard. Anyways, he would fight anyone without hesitation if they say Modrić sucks. He is not afraid of giving someone a blue eye for having opposing opinions.
Tumblr media
4. (Fr)Enemies; One of his biggest problems in Life are Serbia and Bosnia. Most of the time he’s only happy to see them when heavily intoxicated or high. Though he doesn’t like to admit it, it’s very important for him to be Serbia’s Nr1 Enemy. If he isn’t Serbias number one problem in the moment, he gets mad, but usually can’t do anything (the EU is a party pooper!), so waits till the 78th feud between Albania and him are done to finally annoy him. Bosnia is mostly just a side-hustle to annoy while waiting nowadays. All of the annoy each other.
Tumblr media
5. EU-Buddies; Though not as close as the Ex-YUs, Croatia does have good friends in the EU. His main accomplices (next to Slovenia) are Romania and Bulgaria, whom he hangs out with every now and then. After EU-Meetings they like to go out for beers. They are often all cornered into the group of… well.. a bit odd EU members because of their behaviour, but he doesn’t care since it doesn’t affect him in the grand scheme of things.
Tumblr media
These are the basics of my Croatia! If you have any Questions about specific things, don’t be afraid to ask. I‘ll go and snort some Cedevita now.

Salem - Witch City
"Still making history"
If you’re anything like me, a millennial spooky kid obsessed with Halloween, you probably also grew up watching the standard movies annually in October: Scream, Halloween, Beetlejuice, every zombie and Halloween (the franchise) movie possible, and the reigning classic, Hocus Pocus. If you’re one of those weirdos who hasn’t watched it, the family-friendly feature is set in Salem, MA – home of the famous witch trials of 1692. Thanks to the dense history, the town being a Maritime National Historic Site, as well as pop culture such as Bewitched, Hocus Pocus, and later the terrible Hubie Halloween (2020), the New England town of Salem has boasted an increase in tourism, causing an extra MILLION visitors just last October. Now I’m going to take you through my firsthand visit to this beautiful city I adored visiting.
An old friend of mine and I decided we wanted to take a long weekend trip somewhere we could drive in the spring of 2023. Several people who had already been to Salem suggested going at a different time of year than the normal September/October time to avoid the crowds of tourists, as it can be quite congested and the prices of everything goes up as well. Early May sounded perfect for decent weather to experience all the city had to offer, and yes – Ten hours (Pittsburgh to Salem) is a perfectly acceptable distance to drive for a 4 day trip, in my opinion. We found an Airbnb (which may or may not have been haunted) in Marblehead, which was a 15-minute drive from downtown Salem. Marblehead is where most of Hubie Halloween was filmed, which may be a severely poorly rated Adam Sandler movie, but I still watched it 5 times. This aesthetic coastal town is rich in history. It’s arguably the birthplace of the U.S. Navy, and a great deal of the original architecture is still present today. We had a great time walking the streets and seeing normal businesses, such as dentists and law firms, in buildings marked with their original purpose and the year they were built, the oldest being 1663! Our first stop on the evening we arrived was the restaurant Sea Salt, because you know we were looking for seafood. If I had not taken photos, I honestly might not remember our experience here. The service was great, and the atmosphere was very nice. The food was a little pricey, but that was expected. I remember having fantastic Brussel sprouts as an appetizer, and tasty cocktails, but can’t tell you that much more about it. My favorite places to look for when I’m traveling are locally owned coffee shops and bakeries/donut shops, so in the morning I pulled up Google and found a café called Maria’s Java Sun that was just a 5 minute walk down the street. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that we ended up walking down there 3 mornings in a row for coffee and a breakfast sandwich or pastry! They were delightful. We had opted for an Airbnb because of course my two adventure dogs were making the trip with us, and I had to be sure they would be comfortable while we were away for a few hours at a time. It was a goal of mine for them to experience the ocean, so I looked up a dog-friendly beach nearby. The second morning we were there we took them to Devereux Beach just a short drive away. It was a Saturday, so the beach was full of families with A LOT of dogs. Mine are dog reactive, but we were able to get to a more secluded portion for some waves and sea salt to ourselves. Another staple of Marblehead that sticks out in my memory is our trip to the liquor store. I have never before this seen a liquor store of this massive proportion. By the end of our stay, my friend and I agreed we would visit the Marblehead area again in the future. In May, it was serene, the landscape was gorgeous, and there appeared to be a plethora of things to do there, many related to boating and fishing.
Now the main, wicked event! On our first day driving into Salem, we had two main items on the schedule: the Satanic Temple headquarters, and a walking tour of the city. Other than that, we knew we would meander and do some exploring, as well as chow down on some seafood again. We drove to the Satanic Temple first because it was not in walking distance of other attractions. I take full responsibility for this idea, forcing my friend to play along with me, and I do not regret it. The towering, charcoal colored Victorian building was a funeral home before purchased by the organization. It was $13 each to enter as a non-member of the church, and we were not too sure what to expect. If you’re interested in who and what the organization is, I’ll let you do your own research as that could be a lengthy essay itself, but I’m a big fan. In short, the headquarters building is essentially an art gallery with some rotating and permanent exhibitions. I was enchanted by the art on display, captured many photos, and left with a few trinkets from the gift shop. I sat on the statue of Baphomet, I’m not sure what else could have made my visit any better! My friend was also pleasantly surprised by the experience, agreeing it was enjoyable and worth the stop.
Next was our walking tour, but first we had to tackle the issue of parking. The infrastructure of Salem is not necessarily built for the influx of tourists. We ended up parking in a parking garage near the Peabody Essex museum and decided that was it, we would be walking anywhere we needed to go from here, no matter how far. There was a visitor center across the street where I learned Salem is a Maritime National Historic Site. Pro tip: if you have the National Park Passport, you can get a stamp here! I didn’t bring mine, so I bought one of the .99 cent sticker sheets to take a stamp with me.
As much as I would have loved to do an after-dark, ghostly tour, we both knew at our big age we would be back at the Airbnb watching documentaries at that point in the night. I let my friend do the online research and choose the walking tour, so I can’t remember which it was, but there are so many that you probably can’t go wrong with choosing. We met our group at the Town Hall. It was a small group led by a Salem native who was knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the city. From here we saw key spots such as the Bewitched sculpture, the Witch House, several churches, buildings that had been used by affluent figures of society, where they would hold parties and meetings, the Ropes Mansion, ending at the old cemetery and monument dedicated to those that were killed for allegations of witchcraft. It was interesting to have someone who grew up here share the information, and she had so much to add we probably could not have learned from Google. And she shared with us all the ghost stories! As we walked the city, we also couldn’t help but gush over all the residents, not just the businesses, who seemed to embrace the culture and had witchy decorations up that time of year. At the end of the tour, we insisted she tell us the best spot to go for a lobster roll and she was happy to oblige.
This leads me to my favorite stop for food, The Lobster Shanty. Looking online, I believe there are two different restaurants called the same name, but this one appeared to be a dive bar, full of locals, cheesy coastal décor, and a boisterous bartender who seemed more than happy to have us there. The lobster rolls were amazing, as were the cocktails we ordered, and I’m grateful our guide suggested this little place over the best rated online, which was a fancy (and extremely expensive looking) restaurant we would not have been as comfortable in. Several other places we stopped for drinks while exploring that weekend were The Derby, a horse racing themed bar that we had just missed a drag show in, and Rockafella’s, a casual restaurant that claims many hauntings from local spirits, and not just the liquor type. My friend’s favorite restaurant we went to was the Howling Taqueria, where we enjoyed steak quesadillas and blood orange palomas at the suggestion of our waiter. We ended that evening with a couple episodes of “I Survived” and wine on the couch with the dogs, naturally.
The next day, after our Maria’s and beach stop, I had to be the nerd I am and go to the Salem Police Department to trade patches. So far, I believe they do have the most badass patch with a witch on it. Then we took in some of the Salem Witch Village shops. There were metaphysical stores, tourist traps of souvenirs, antiques shops, gift/specialty stores, art galleries, and very niche horror themed stores. One store I was upset with myself for passing on was Black Craft, as I didn’t realize the largest witch statue is actually within the building. I was afraid of spending too much money unnecessarily on clothing!
We cut off our browsing for a scheduled appointment time we had with the Salem Witch Museum. The museum seemed to be busy at every time of day, so if you make this part of your sightseeing, be prepared for large crowds. Tickets were $17.50 each for adults and nonrefundable. It’s a massive, visually appealing building, and not actually a museum but more of a theatrical production and history lesson. To be completely transparent, I didn’t learn anything new that I hadn’t already learned from our walking tour or just reading information around the city. Also, it was a rushed, guided tour. We were disappointed we did not get to take our time in the portion where there were artifacts to look at. The entire thing just seemed like they wanted to herd us in and out as fast as possible, and the only portion we weren’t pushed through was the gift shop at the end. I would not suggest this one for small children, as there are some graphic depictions of the hangings (and rock smashings) of the victims of the trials. I personally would not say this stop is worth the price and time.
We had seen most of what we set out to at this point, so we decided fuck it – we are in Salem, let’s go do something witchy. We chose a random metaphysical shop to go have our tarot cards read, and lucked out because the two mediums were available at the same time. It was roughly $40 each, which seemed to be the standard when I was comparing shops. I had a really fun reading with a young woman who was empathetic, bright, and obviously had a great time interacting with the people who came to her. She told me I could record my reading if I wished, and I regret not doing so! I encourage embracing being a tourist once in a while and support the local economy.
We went to Salem Common to take a walk and some photos, and then found an arcade/bar to have a drink and round off the night. It felt appropriate to shoot some zombies while in Salem, even if guns were not quite Winifred Sanderson’s style. Alas, we were physically exhausted and probably slightly overstimulated from being in public so much, so left right before another drag show started. I was pretty torn on staying for it, but wine and a movie, along with sweatpants, were just too inviting. It was a successful second and last full day in Salem. Due to the recent increase in tourism, the city is strongly urging visitors in September and October to NOT drive into Salem. Commuter rail services have been expanded upon, and there is also the Salem Ferry to utilize. If I were you, I would choose a different time of year. There is still just as much Halloween magic to experience in the area when it isn’t the spooky season, less lines, and lower prices for lodging. If you are going to drive or fly in, there are many Airbnb’s, hotels, and even an RV park to stay in. As always, I emphasize being kind to the locals. This is their home, even if it is a bucket list item or a novelty to you. It especially hit hard when we were at crosswalks and school buses full of children were passing by. I’m sure it can be frustrating, or even annoying, to always have so many people on the streets gawking and taking photos. Be kind, use your manners, and tip your servers! Travel can be a welcoming experience for all involved when every party puts the effort in, and maybe form a calming circle if you need to.

17 Questions 17 People
Tagged by the lovely @galvanizedfriend
Nickname: My name is too short, so I don’t really have one. However, no one can ever pronounce it right half the time, so I did have one memorable science teacher in secondary school that called me Double A, like the battery, because that’s my initials and every register he got the name wrong without fail so one day he just declared, screw it, I’m calling you Double A.
Sign: Gemini
Height: Honestly not a clue, I forget. I’m not short but I’m not tall, so probably something like 5′5, 5′6.
Last thing I googled: Literally just googled my sign to check it was Gemini because I was second-guessing myself.
Song stuck in my head: Songs don’t often get stuck in my head, and I don’t think one has today, but I have been listening to ‘Eight’ by ‘Sleeping at Last’ on a loop lately while writing?
Followers: 143
Amount of Sleep:  Anything from 8-10 hours usually. Though I can function on like 5 hours for about 48 hours before I crash. Like the crash never happens the first morning for me, it always comes in a day or two late. Same with hangovers, though those so far I just sleep off with no other consequences.
Lucky number: Don’t have one, but any even, rounded number works. Odd numbers scare me.
Dream Job: Filmmaker, specifically a Gaffer. They’re basically the heads of lighting, second only to the Cinematographer. Technically the director and producers too, but that’s not my department. Worked on a short film with someone who worked on Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon before Christmas, which was cool.
What I’m wearing: PJs & dressing gown. Normally I get changed before bed but eh, tonight I’m chillin’.
Movies/Books that summarise me: Books would be Rebecca (1938) by Daphne du Maurier, the Skullduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy (truly the favourites of my childhood) and more recently the Nevernight series by Jay Kristoff. All of them are my exact vibes. Sass with a dash of the macabre and spooky. Sometimes a little murder. Movies - god do you even realise how many movies I’ve watched. Which ones summarise me? I appreciate anything with good filmmaking, and I’m not talking about weird arty stuff. I’m talking films that hit the bar of every note - fantastic production design, writing, performance, soundtracks, cinematography, like they gotta have it all. I want to be seduced by story. I’m also an incurable romantic. So I guess films like Se7en, Psycho, The Old Guard, Cyrano, A Monster Calls, Hacksaw Ridge, Knives Out, The Batman, Everything Everywhere All At Once. Like with books, I’ll go with gritty, dark spooky vibes any day, but I also dip my toes in every genre of every age, and the movies that summarise me would reflect that.
Favourite Song: I really love movie/show soundtracks. At the minute a favourite song of mine would be ‘I Need More’ from Cyrano.
Favourite Instrument: Piano. Gotta be. No competition. Though I love fully formed orchestras, the whole shebang, like classical covers are my secret love.
Aesthetic: The complete opposite of a sweet summer child, even though I was born in such a summery month. I prefer cold frosty winters, thick fog mornings and heavy rainy days over heat and sun. In fact I regularly hiss at sunlight when I open the curtains, often not opening til late morning/afternoon because I prefer the dark so much. Fall is probably my favourite season because of October and Halloween, but I also ADORE the sunrises and sunsets of winter, so like its a close tie. I’d probably move to somewhere like Canada or Norway just for the snow and ✨aesthetic✨. Ooooo also forests, I love forests, so you’ll always find me walking in them. Beaches are so overrated. I’m like Anakin I HATE SAND
Favourite book: Rebecca (1938) by Daphne du Maurier. I read it in a day while in the college library (it’s around 150k words) and still go back to read certain parts years later. Gothic novels overall are a favourite of mine, too.
Random fact: I have literally no self-preservation instincts when it comes to animals. I just want to pet them, even if they’re wild and want nothing to do with me. I caught a grass snake (maybe an adder, I was excited to find a snake, okay, I didn’t check if it was venomous) at a beach once. And like, 50-60 crabs (this was in the same day) by shoving my hand under a rock and letting them pinch me so I could drag them out. I let them all go, obviously. On a different day though while at the same beach, I found a flounder in the mussel beds. That was also pretty cool. Not as cool as the snake though.
Thank you for tagging me! ❤️
I tag @bellemorte180 @stars-and-darkness @purplesigebert @garglyswoof @heatherstyles @kirythestitchwitch @little-miss-sunny-daisy @destellolunar @helpless-in-sleep @enniec123 @frogs-are-bitchs @thetourguidebarbie @cupcakemolotov and literally anyone else I feel like I’m forgetting people, and I wanna get to know people more. Don’t need to participate though! I just thought it might be fun 😊

Sweet Talker
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jin x OC
Genre: fluff, angst
Word count: 9.8k
Warnings: drinking, lots of shirtless dudes, brief mention of skinny dipping? (does that need a warning?)
Lyrics: Sometimes all I think about is you…late nights in the middle of June. - Heat Waves by Glass Animals
Summary: Isabelle is stuck working on a beach this summer, which wouldn’t be so bad, but everything about it reminds her of her first love.  To make matters worse…it seems he decided to take a trip to said beach this summer.
A/N: special thanks to @jiminie-and-his-pinky-finger for the banner ^^
Tumblr media
I opened the minifridge in the back of the snack bar.  The beach was hotter today than it usually was, and everyone was running to the snack bar in search of cold drinks.  I just wanted to be on the beach.  Working on the beach was a pretty good alternate if I couldn’t be swimming, though.  I could’ve been stuck stocking shelves at a grocery store today instead, which was definitely not something I wanted to be doing.
Once I’d rang up the customer, I leaned against the counter.  As much as I loved the beach, I really didn’t want to be here.  I’d seen it every year, time and time again, but it always reminded me of the boy I’d met the year I was fourteen.  And to be frank, I hated remembering him.
My family lived less than a mile from the beach, so we’d spent nearly every day of the summer at the beach when I was younger.  I hadn’t minded much.  I’d loved the beach back then.  This particular summer, a certain teenage boy and his family had come to spend a whole month at the beach.  Being fourteen, I had been more outgoing than I was now, so I’d taken my chances and spoken to the boy, and of course, we’d spent the rest of the month together.
That had been six years ago, but I foolishly still wished to see him again.  Because of it, I tended to avoid the beach now.  As much as I loved it, I felt strange knowing I still liked a guy I’d known for a month many, many years ago.  I was an adult now.  I should’ve been able to get over a silly crush I had as a kid long ago.
I sighed and tugged off my apron after noticing what time it was.  My break had started.  I pulled the little palm tree pin out of my bun and set it down on top of my apron.  In my opinion, they tried a little too hard to sell the beach aesthetic to travelers.  The whole place was littered with pictures of palm trees and coconuts, and we didn’t even grow coconuts here!
Once I was outside the snack bar, I pulled my phone out to find about sixty texts from my best friend, Ellie.
“Isa.  How’s the snack bar?  I can’t believe you’re enjoying the beach without me!  Save me a pineapple slushie.  Mateo is working today.  And he is (hot).  Why did you never tell me?  Did you know that the music store has whole pianos?  Like, big, big ones!  Isa answer your texts pleaseeeee.”
Ellie was spending her summer working at the music shop, so I wasn’t quite sure how she hadn’t known they sold pianos until now.  I laughed as I scrolled through the flurry of emojis Ellie had sent before I finally responded.
“You already knew Mateo was hot.  You’ve been pining over him since we were in high school.”
“Oh, look, Isabelle is alive!”
I rolled my eyes.
“Yes, I have a ten-minute break.  We’ve had lots of customers today because of how hot it is.”
“You better get a tan for me since I can’t spend my summer on the beach.”
“I’m not in the sun much.”
“I don’t care.  Get a tan.”
I laughed, looking up from my phone for a moment to glance around at the beach.  I watched as people played on the shore and swam in the ocean.  There was a game of volleyball going on, and there were a few people surfing.  I paused as I came across one particular young man standing on the beach.  He looked oddly familiar.  He turned around then, and my eyes widened.  Jin.  I glanced back down at my phone for just long enough to type out a text to Ellie.
“I’ve gotta go.  Text you after work.”
I didn’t bother waiting for Ellie’s response before I bolted back into the snack bar.  What on earth was Jin doing here?  He hadn’t been here for six years, so why was he here the one year I was working on the beach?
It would be ok.  I could survive the next four hours and just hope he wouldn’t wander over here, and then I could go home.  Surely he wouldn’t be here the next day, right?  His grandparents lived here, so maybe they wanted to do something with him other than hang out on the beach?
Sadly, the world was against me, and Jin was at the beach the next morning.  Not only that, but he also decided to come over the snack bar.  As he approached, I realized that there was really no way he wouldn’t recognize me.  I looked almost exactly the same as I had six years ago, just a bit more mature.  And it wasn’t like I could escape and leave the work to someone else, either.  No one else was working with me today.
I was mentally planning about five different ways to bury myself in the ground when Jin walked up to the stand.
“Hi, Isabelle!  It’s been a while!”
Well, dang it.  I wasn’t getting out of this now.
“Hi!” I said a bit too enthusiastically. “Jin, right?”
“Uh…yeah.  We hung out together that one summer?  Remember?”
“Oh,” I laughed nervously. “Yes, of course.  I remember.”
He smiled. “Well, it’s nice to see you.  It’s been a long while.  You look…gorgeous.”
I glanced down at my work clothes and considered the bun I’d sloppily put in my hair that morning. “Sure, buddy.” Out of all the things I could’ve said in response, why had I said that?
He cleared his throat, and I had to keep herself from looking down at his bare chest.  The last time we’d seen each other, he’d preferred to wear swim shirts.  He clearly wasn’t fifteen anymore.
“Is there anything you’d like to order?” I asked.
“Do you guys have beer?”
Beer?  Who did he think he was, an adult?  Oh, wait, he was twenty-one.  He was an adult….
“Yeah, we have three different kinds,” I informed him, taking one of each out of the minifridge and placing them all in front of him.
“Do you have an opinion on them?”
“Um.  Jin, I can’t drink yet.”
He snapped his fingers. “Right.  You’re a year younger than I am.” He picked up the one on the right. “I’ll just take this one, then.  How much do I owe you?”
“Three bucks.”
“For the little thing?  Wow!” he placed three dollars on the counter and popped the can open.
“Yeah, we have to stay in business somehow,” I told him as I put the money in the cash register.
“That’s true,” he nodded. “Well, see you around!”
I nodded, secretly hoping that I could save myself the embarrassment and never, ever have to see him again.
Ellie was beyond enthused when I told her what had happened that evening.
“This is the Jin?  Like Jin who wore his swim trunks inside out at the beach Jin?”
I thought about this for a few seconds.  I didn’t recall such a thing happening. “Do we know more than one Jin?”
“You don’t remember that?  It was on your birthday!”
“Was it?”
“Yeah.  Your mom made him walk all the way back to his grandparents’ house to change.”
“I suppose I may remember this vaguely.” I took a deep breath. “What do I do?”
“You ask him on a date, silly!”
I looked at Ellie like she was crazy. “No.”
Ellie sighed. “Are you ever going to go on a date?  You’ve never been on a date with anyone.  And Jin’s not even from here, so if the date goes badly, he’s leaving in a month!  You’ll never have to see him again!”
Part of me wondered just what would happen if the date went well, though.  He would be leaving then too, and I’d be left adrift after spending a summer with a guy I’d fallen in love with.  Again.
“Yeah, and if the date goes bad, the two of us will still be spending every day on the same beach together.  I can’t risk it.”
“Why not?”
Ellie clearly wasn’t understanding, so I pulled out the only card I knew to play in this situation.
“Are you going to ask Mateo out?”
Ellie considered this for a few moments.  Then she shrugged. “Maybe.”
“See?  You’re not sure either!  So how about we both just not ask them out at move on with life?  We don’t need men to fulfill our lives.”
Ellie took this as an invitation to ask Mateo out and use her success as an excuse for me to ask Jin out, though, so that card didn’t work the way I’d expected it to.  No matter what she said, I wouldn’t cave.  I wouldn’t go on a date with Jin.  I wouldn’t.  I just needed to get over this dumb crush before the summer was over so that I could go back to my normal life once university started up again in the fall.  I could live the rest of my life without Jin.  There were plenty of nice guys at the university anyways.  I was sure I could date one of them and be far happier than I’d be in a long-distance relationship.
Every day at the snack bar was excruciatingly long as I tried my best to avoid Jin.  I just knew I’d say something stupid to him if I was given the chance, so I wasn’t going to give myself that chance.
Part of me really wanted him to return and talk to me again, though.  I felt like that silly fourteen-year-old all over again who swooned at just about anything he said.  I didn’t like that feeling.  It made me feel out of control, and I preferred to have control over everything in my life.  Every time my heart jumped in my chest when I saw him, I reminded myself that this would all be over in four weeks.  He wasn’t staying, and I wasn’t going to let him take my heart with him.  Not if I had anything to say about it.
The bad thing was that it seemed the beach was not the only place I had to avoid him.  He was everywhere I went.  He shopped at the same supermarket as me, he was eating at my favorite restaurant, and he was even using the same gym as me.  Who went to the gym in this town, anyways?  You could walk everywhere in town, and the beach gave you more of a workout than the gym ever could.  Walking through sand was definitely more of a workout than walking the track.  Saying this makes me sound like a hypocrite for having a gym membership, though, so I’ll explain myself: the gym was supposed to be my safe haven from Jin.  I also still hated the beach even in the off season, so it was more reasonable to go there than to the beach.  No one needs a winter tan, right?
I wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but I had stopped for more than a few seconds to watch him lift weights one morning at the gym.  It didn’t mean anything, though.  He just had nice biceps.  Other than that, I was avoiding him.  At least, that was what I told myself.  I wasn’t exactly doing everything I could to avoid him.  I definitely didn’t stop in the chips aisle at the store to stare at him.  And I didn’t sit three booths down from him at the burger place and watched him eat.  I also hadn’t bought a pair of binoculars to watch him at the beach.
Ok, so admittedly, Jin was making me do crazy things.  I blamed it on the fourteen-year-old inside of me who was floored at the thought of possibly dating her crush.  He wasn’t my crush, though.  Definitely not.
“I made a really good call on that beer last week.  It was actually pretty good.”
“Oh, really?” I asked, leaning against the counter like I hadn’t been watching him playing volleyball with a few other guys just three minutes earlier. “Would you like to buy another one?”
“Actually, can I buy four?  One of my friends kept stealing the last one I bought, so I’m just going to get one for each of us.”
I laughed. “Of course.  I’ll get you four of them.  That’s twelve dollars.”
He pulled out a few bills and handed them to me before picking the drinks up off the counter. “Thanks!  I’ll be back for something else later,” he said with a wink.
I wanted to punch my heart for beating faster at that small motion.  He was just a guy.  A really hot guy, but just a guy.  There wasn’t really anything that made him stand out from all the other guys on the beach this summer.  He was just a guy I’d known for a month in high school and never seen again.
Ok, so I was doing a really bad job at convincing myself I didn’t have a crush on him anymore.  Maybe I needed to get away.  We were about a half an hour drive from the mainland, and I could totally take a day or two off work for some time to myself.
So, that’s exactly what I did.  I took Friday off that week so that I could have three whole days on the mainland.  A vacation was just what I needed.  Jin would be off my mind, and I wouldn’t be sweating through my clothes for hours on end.  Come to think of it, I should’ve gotten a different summer job.  Staring at shirtless guys for hours on end was someone’s cup of tea, but that someone was not me.
Ellie wanted to join me on my little trip, but I was convinced I needed some time to myself, so I left her with her new boyfriend.  That was ok.  The two of them could spend a lot of time together while I wasn’t there.  They didn’t get to spend a lot of time together outside the music store because Ellie spent all her free time with me.
I packed a little bag.  I wouldn’t need much for two nights, right?  Generally, I had a tendency to overpack, but I wasn’t giving in this time.  I was packing light, and I was leaving my dog with my parents.  I could spend two nights without him.
The drive to the mainland was far more insane than I’d expected it to be.  There were so, so many cars on the road.  How had I not realized this many people visited our tiny island during the summer?  Sure, I saw many unfamiliar faces every day, but it had never occurred to me that there were this many unfamiliar faces.
By the time I arrived on the mainland, it was nearly noon.  I hadn’t gotten out of the house until ten, and the traffic had been horrendous.  I was ready for some lunch.
I found a little surf n’ turf shop near my hotel, and just about everything on the menu looked tasty.  I was pretty wiped out from all the driving.  I always was.  It wasn’t often I drove more than a mile, so being in a car for two hours had been really exhausting.
It was only when I sat down to eat that I spotted Jin sitting at one of the tables.  I recognized two of the guys sitting with him as guys who lived in town, and there was one guy I didn’t recognize.  I blinked slowly as I plopped down into my seat.  I’d come here to escape Jin, and he was sitting three tables down from me!  I wanted to scream.  Then, my worst nightmare happened.  One of the guys patted Jin on the shoulder and pointed my way.  Jin turned around and smiled as he waved at me.
“Isabelle!  Come sit with us!”
I would’ve said no, but I was too socially awkward to stand up for myself, so I crossed the room and sat between Jin and one of the other guys.
“You’re the snack stand girl, right?” the guy sitting to my right asked.
I smiled at him. “Yeah, I work at the snack bar.”
He grinned. “How have I never had that beer before?  I swear I’ve shopped at your snack stand.”
I shrugged.  I briefly remembered this guy’s name as Yoongi or something, but I couldn’t be sure it was the same person.  There were quite a few young men living on the island, and I certainly didn’t know all of them.
“Hey, you got the crab?” Jin asked. “Awesome.  Is it good?”
I didn’t want to admit to him that I hadn’t even tried it yet, so I shoved a hushpuppy in my mouth as I broke one of the crab legs.
“What are you doing up here, Isabelle?” Yoongi asked. “Your name is Isabelle, right?  I’m remembering that correctly?”
I nodded. “I’m on a vacation,” I mumbled around a bite of food.
“Are you gonna be back in town by Sunday night?  One of my friends is throwing a party on the beach that night.  You should come.”
“Ohh.  Sounds fun.”
“Yoongi’s right.  You should come with us,” Jin nodded.
“Oh?” I asked with a mumble.
Now all four guys were staring at me expectantly, and I didn’t have the courage to say no.
“I suppose I could come.”
“Great!” Jin grinned. “Do you still live where you used to?  I could pick you up.”
“Oh, you don’t have to-”
“Yeah, she still lives there,” Yoongi assured him, nodding.
How on earth did he know where I lived?  Sure, the town was small, but I didn’t know where he lived.  Then again, I hadn’t even really seen him until today, and if Jin was talking about me, he probably knew who I was.  I didn’t ask questions and instead elected to just eat my crab.
“Isabelle, have you ever been to pier?” Jin asked a few minutes later.
I looked up at him. “We have a pier?”
So, I found myself on the pier with four guys I barely knew.  Maybe that wasn’t the smartest idea, but I didn’t care.  They all had to be ok guys if they knew Jin.  At least, if Jin was still the same guy I’d known six years ago.  Ok, so maybe this was still a bad idea.  It was ok, though.  Jin and Yoongi both seemed to really enjoy fishing, and their friends were fine with watching while getting their occasional turns.
“Have you ever tried fishing?” Jin asked as he threw his line out again.
“Me?  Nope.”
“You should try it.” He reeled the line back in and handed me the pole.
I stared at it for a few moments. “Um…so, what do I do?”
“Here,” he stepped behind me and reached for the pole. “May I?”
Truthfully, if it had been anyone else, I would’ve said no, but this was Jin, and the fourteen-year-old inside me was absolutely ecstatic at the thought of Jin pressing his chest to my back to help me fish.  My heart was jumping in my chest too, and I momentarily wondered if he’d be able to feel it.
“Yeah.  Please.”
He wrapped his hands around mine and guided me through casting the line.  I had to admit that I wasn’t sure I could do this by myself if he let me.
“See?  You’ve got it.”
I shook my head. “I really don’t.”
He laughed. “Ok.  I’ll stay here.”
I felt a tug on the pole a few moments later, and I grinned. “Oh my gosh!  Did we catch something?”
I was holding a little tiny fish a few moments later.
“Look at it!  It’s so adorable!”
Jin smiled. “Yeah, it is.”
I looked around. “Hey…where did the boys go?”
“We’d had enough of watching you two being all lovey-dovey,” Yoongi informed us when we found the three of them way down at the other end of pier a few minutes later.
I laughed awkwardly as I realized what he was implying. “Well, I had some other things I planned to do today, so….  I’m going to head out now.  It was awesome fishing with you guys, although I have to admit I was so awful at it I’m not sure I’ll do it again.  Um…yeah.  See you guys Sunday!”
Then I ran off before I had another chance to embarrass myself.
The rest of the weekend was spent doing whatever I could find on the mainland.  I had to admit, there really wasn’t much to do here.  Our little island had more interesting things to do than this place did.  And it had my favorite snow cone shop, which was arguably the most important thing to have in your day-to-day life.  Especially when you lived on an island off South Carolina.  Nothing was more important than snow cones and surfing.  Or shark fishing, if you were Ellie’s dad.
I headed back home as soon as I checked out of my hotel on Sunday.  I’d planned on staying longer, but I couldn’t really think of anything else to do.
As soon as I got back into town, I headed straight for the music store.  Ellie was working today, and I figured she could use some company.  Except that she clearly didn’t, considering she and Mateo were making out behind the counter when I walked in.
“Whoa, lovebirds, not during office hours,” I complained, announcing my presence.
Ellie shoved her boyfriend away and spun around. “Ohhh heyyyyy.  What are you doing here?  I thought you were in Bluffton until this evening?”
“Uh, yeah, I was supposed to be.  That place was awfully boring, I have to admit.  There was nearly nothing to do besides go to Walmart!”
“That doesn’t sound so bad.”
“When you have nothing to do but shop at Walmart for two days, it’s pretty bad.  And, you won’t believe this, Jin was there with three of his friends.”
“He was at Walmart?”
“No, Ellie!  I-” I shook my head. “He was in Bluffton on Friday.”
Ellie grinned. “Awesome.  Did you say hi to him?”
“Yeah.  I ate dinner with them and then we went to a fishing pier and fished for a while.”
“Ooo.  Did you guys do anything?”
“…we fished.” I squinted.  I could see where she was going with this. “Ok, actually, I’m going to go home.  I have a party to get ready for anyways.”
I could faintly hear Ellie asking what party, but it didn’t matter, because I was already out the door.
When I got home, I practically overturned my closet looking for an outfit.  I had no idea what to wear.  What was the dress code for beach parties?  I’d lived on an island my entire life, but I’d never gone to a beach party.  That sounded absolutely ridiculous, but it was the truth.  Unless you counted the birthday party my aunt threw for my cousin when he turned six.  That didn’t seem like the same thing, though.
I finally settled on a tank top and some skimpy shorts over my bathing suit.  Considering this was by the beach, we were definitely going to be swimming.  And if not, I could always just look hot in a bathing suit.  My body wasn’t exactly what the locals called a beach body, but who cares?
Jin picked me up at five-thirty on the dot.  I liked that a little too much.  Punctuality tickled some part of my brain that was most likely feeding my want for perfection at all times.  As I slid into the sports car, something occurred to me.
“Is this your car?”
“Yeah.  I live upstate now, so I drove down here.  Taking a plane would’ve taken just as much time out of my day.”
I laughed. “South Carolina is a long way from Arizona.”
“That it is,” he nodded. “My parents got tired of the weather being in the hundreds so often, and my dad got a new job a few years ago.”
“I see,” I nodded. “My parents still rent out beach houses for a living.  And my mom works at that jewelry shop.”
“Awesome.  You’ll have to take me down there and pick out some earrings for me.” He flicked his earlobe, and for the first time ever I noticed the earrings in his ears.
I gasped. “When did you get your ears pierced?”
“Tenth grade.  All the boys from drama club made a pact and we got our ears pierced together,” he laughed. “I haven’t had a clip-on fall off my ear since.”
“Wow, are you sure you’re the Jin I met six years ago?”
He shrugged. “I always imagined you working at the Piggly Wiggly instead of on the beach, so I’m not sure I know you either.”
I snapped my fingers. “Actually, I did apply there.  Working on the beach is nice, though.”
“Do you think we’ll get to see the stars tonight?”
“Oh yeah.  The beach is the best place to see stars as long as the vacationers aren’t using strobe lights on their decks.”
“Strobe lights?” he asked in shock.
I nodded. “You’d be surprised what goes on.  One time, I saw a drunk couple in their forties skinny dipping at one am.  I was horrified.  I haven’t been to the beach past ten since.”
Jin laughed. “Remind me to never get drunk by a body of water.”
I nodded. “If you do, I’m driving you straight home.”
It wasn’t long before we were parking near the beach, and the two of us walked the rest of the way to the party.  One of Yoongi’s friends had parents who owned a beach house, and he was hosting the party there tonight.  The bad thing was that his driveway had room for about three cars, so the rest of us had to park about a mile away.
“Yooooo, Tin Jin!  You made it!” a tall guy with blond hair exclaimed as he hugged Jin.
“I told you not to call me that,” Jin grimaced as the guy crushed him.
“I told you it was because of the bucket you had on your head last week.”
Jin shook his head. “Still don’t call me that.  Jin is fine, though.”
The guy nodded, seeming to get the memo this time. “Yoongi’s in the kitchen.”
There turned out to be a very large stash of snacks in the kitchen, so the three of us ate as Yoongi and Jin chatted.
“Hey, Isabelle, your birthday is soon, right?” Jin asked eventually.
I smiled. “Yeah, next week, actually.”
“You’re turning twenty-one, right?  We’ve gotta get you some alcohol.”
I laughed and shook my head. “That’s ok.  You don’t need to do that.”
“Come on,” Yoongi nudged my shoulder. “There’s got to be something you want to try.  Beer?  Wine?  Whiskey?”
“Actually, wine sounds good.” I shrugged. “Maybe champagne too.”
“Ah, the lady does have demands,” Jin teased. “Anything in particular?  Or should we just choose something random?”
“Hey, whatever you find is fine.  I don’t plan on getting too drunk, so just don’t go wild with your options.”
“All right.  Is there anything else you’d like to do?  The last time I was at your party was when you were fifteen, so I’m sure you’re not too interested in everything rainbow themed anymore.”
I glared at him. “We don’t talk about that.”
“So…the answer is yes, then?”
“You’re mean.”
“You were at her fifteenth?” Yoongi asked.
Jin nodded. “I was here in June.”
“You didn’t come to my fifteenth!”
“Yeah, cause it was in March,” Jin stated matter-of-factly. “I had school.”
“It was over spring break.”
“And I lived on the other side of the country.  It’s ok.  I was here for your twenty-first.”
Yoongi shook his head.  Then he looked at me. “Look, he was already more committed to you than he was to me at fifteen.”
I glanced between the two of them. “I beg to differ.  You two know each other far better than I know either of you.”
“You didn’t tell her about the great meltdown of 2018?”
Jin reached across the counter to shove Yoongi’s arm.
“What?  What are you talking about?” I asked.
Jin laughed. “It’s nothing.”
Yoongi blew out a long breath. “I wouldn’t say that visiting every house in that neighborhood was nothing.”
“Yoongi!”
Yoongi looked at me. “Did you really never find out?”
I was still confused.  Did he mean Jin had been looking for my house?  If so, why?  The two of us had made no point of keeping in contact after we were fifteen, but he’d come looking for me two years later?
“Yeah.  You guys were out of town that week.  Did the neighbors never tell you?”
I shook my head.  I’d never heard anything of this.
“Yoongi,” Jin said through gritted teeth. “Shut up.”
Yoongi leaned back against the counter and crossed his arms before smiling. “Ok.  I’ll shut up.”
I shoved about five more grapes into my mouth so that I didn’t say something stupid.  Had Jin spent the past six years missing me too?  Was I not totally insane for being in love with a guy I’d known for a month?  The thought of him reciprocating my feelings made me feel even more insane.  There was no way he did.  Yoongi had to be lying.  Except…Jin was rather mad at him for saying all of that.
“You said there’s a pool out back?” I asked after I’d swallowed all those grapes.
Yoongi nodded, so I abandoned the two of them and left my clothes on one of the beach chairs before jumping in the pool.  Most of the guests had decided the beach was better than the pool, apparently, because there was one other person in this pool.
After completely soaking myself in water, I sat in the hot tub for probably longer than was healthy.  When the hot tub didn’t feel hot anymore, I jumped back into the pool, which now felt ice cold.  I squeaked as the water soaked through my swimsuit.  I shouldn’t have come tonight.  I was headed back to Columbia in two months, so the two of us would be split up regardless of whether he was here or home with his parents.
Eventually I found myself soaking wet and laying on a pool chair as I stared up at the stars.  I had been right.  The stars looked great from here, especially where there weren’t streetlights blocking my view.  Why didn’t we take advantage of our beach houses more often?  Sure, we rented them out to people, but there were the occasional nights that no one was staying there.
It was only then that I realized how late it really was.  One check of my phone confirmed that it was already nine.  How long had I spent in the pool, exactly?
That night, I laid in my bed wide awake after successfully washing and combing all the chlorine from the pool out of my hair.  Jin had come looking for me years ago.  I’d never even tried.  His grandparents had lived down the block from me this whole time, and not once had I thought to go over there and ask for his contact information.  How stupid was I?
I rolled around in bed, considering everything that had happened in the past few days.  Jin had to like me.  Why else would Yoongi be making all these random comments otherwise?  I didn’t know how to feel about this.  On the one hand, I wanted to date Jin.  On the other hand…were long-distance relationships during university really the best idea?  I picked up my pillow and screamed into it.  Maybe I should never have gotten that job at the snack bar.
Work started again the next day, but it wasn’t for about a week that I discovered Jin hadn’t gotten tired of the beach yet.  This was the first time I’d really seen him swimming in the ocean.  I couldn’t really tell what he was doing from where I was standing, but he was definitely in the water.  He’d spent most of the time I’d watched him either making sandcastles or playing volleyball.
It was around noon when he finally wandered over towards me.
“Hey, have you ever seen the seashells here?”
I didn’t want to tell him that I’d gone searching for seashells many, many times since I was little.  I glanced up to find him holding a huge shell in his hand, and my eyes widened.
“Wow!  I’ve never pulled one that big!”
“Really?  It took me about three hours to find one this big.  One of the boys found some huge sand dollars.  You’ll have to come out later so I can show you.”
“Well, I get off at four.  Maybe I can run home and get my bathing suit then.”
“Cool!  We’re doing barbeque at Yoongi’s house tonight.  Wanna come?”
“Sure!  When is it?”
“We’re gonna head over there at five to get the grill started.  One of his friends bought a bunch of steak and shrimp and other stuff.”
“Ok, I’ll tell my parents that I won’t be joining them for dinner.”
I had to admit that it was a little weird to be spending so much time with a group of people I didn’t know, but it was worth it to spend time with Jin.  It seemed that he didn’t know many of the people at these gatherings either, so I was good company to him.  Although, did we really know each other any better than the other people there?
After I’d run home to get my bathing suit, Jin and I waded out to where the water was deeper to search for sand dollars.
“Have you ever done this?  Yoongi said you need to dig around with your toes…”
It was much easier to do that now that the water was reaching my shoulders.
“Oh!  I found one!”
I used my toes to pull it out of the sand, and then I grabbed it and pulled it out of the water.
“Well, would you look at that,” he laughed. “You’re good at this.  Ooo!  I think I got one!”
Once his was out of the water, the two of us compared them.
“Yours is bigger,” I laughed. “Probably because my toes are smaller.”
He took this as an invitation to pull his foot out of the water and wiggle his toes in my face. “These are bigger than yours?”
Before I could even shove him, he lost his balance and fell into the water.  He resurfaced a few seconds later, coughing out water.
“I lost the sand dollar!” he exclaimed. “We have to make sure they’re put down on the floor or they won’t survive!”
I quickly placed my sand dollar back in the sand using my foot, and then the two of us swam around for a few minutes looking for Jin’s sand dollar.
“How big was it?” I asked.
He made a circle with his hands to imitate the sand dollar’s size. “It was about this big!”
I held up a sand dollar. “Is this it?”
He swam over to me and examined the sand dollar in my hand.
“Probably.  Let’s put it back.  I think it’s about time to head to Yoongi’s place.”
Once we got back into the shallow water, I went off running.
“Try to catch me!”
“Hey!  That’s not fair!  You got a head start!”
“Your legs are longer than mine!”
Yoongi’s house wasn’t too far from where we’d been, so we walked.  It wasn’t the most comfortable thing to walk in sand-coated sandals, but I’d deal until we were on solid concrete.
“You know, I could get used to living on the beach like this,” Jin admitted.
“Do your parents live out west?”
He nodded. “Just about as west as you can get in this state.  My grandparents wanted them to move closer, but my dad’s job took them to Greenville.  I could always move down here if I wanted to.  It’s nice to be with my parents, though.”
“Should we go to the jewelry store this weekend?  You’ve gotta get some earrings before you leave, right?”
He laughed. “That’s right!  We should go around and see if we can find some good alcohol while we’re at it.  Your birthday is Monday, right?”
“Hey, you remembered!” I grinned. “I’m taking the day off.  My parents wanted to take me canoeing, and then we’re doing a dolphin boat tour in the afternoon.”
“That sounds cool!  Is there a time we can get together?”
“I’m sure we can do something for dinner.  The dolphin tour ends around seven.” I paused. “Do you want to come on the dolphin tour with us?  The guy taking us is one of my dad’s friends, so he’s just taking the three of us.  I think we could cram one more in.”
Jin laughed. “Sure, I’d love to come!  You think your parents remember me?”
“Well, Ellie sure remembers you.”
“Is she the one who wore nothing but braids the whole summer?”
“That’s her!”
“I’m just memorable,” he nodded with a wink.
Yoongi’s place was a lot smaller than I’d expected it to be.  Despite the fact that there were about four bedrooms in the house, there weren’t a bunch of open floors like the house we’d been at last weekend.  He had a modest little living room and a kitchen, and the back yard was pretty small and grassy.
“Jin, can you watch the grill for a few minutes?  I need to go check on the potatoes.” Yoongi asked – informed, more like – the moment he saw Jin.  He was already inside before Jin could respond.
“Hey, did you get to see the stars on Sunday?” I asked. “They were pretty bright from the pool.”
“I don’t think I did, no,” Jin shook his head. “I didn’t go outside much while we were there.”
“You’ll have to see them tonight.”
“Will I?”
“Of course!”
Surprisingly, Yoongi’s barbeque was a lot more peaceful than the party we’d had on Sunday.  Granted, there was much more food and far less talking, but there was no drama, and Yoongi wasn’t spilling Jin’s secrets today.
A few of the guys offered me beer, but I insisted that I was waiting until Monday.  If I didn’t have the experience of trying alcohol on my twenty-first birthday, was it even a special day?
The next morning, Jin and I headed over to see my mom.  Morning meaning more like afternoon, because I wasn’t even awake until eleven.
“Did your mom work here before?” Jin asked as we walked down the street. “I don’t recall.”
I shook my head. “She wanted something else to do besides taking care of our beach houses.”
I backed into the door and listened as the bell jingled over my head.
“Wow, this place is tiny!” Jin exclaimed.
“Isabelle!  Is this Jin?  My goodness, he’d gotten tall!”
I laughed. “Yeah, Mom, this is Jin.  He wanted to come find some earrings.”
“Oh, we have a lot of those,” Mom laughed as she walked around the counter. “Anything in particular you were looking for?”
“Not really.  I just wanted to look around.  Most of my earrings look the same,” Jin admitted.
“You should get some dangles!” I encouraged him.
He picked up a pair of huge earrings. “These?”
I cringed. “No.”
“Ok, you tell me what you’d pick for me, then.”
I walked a few laps around the shop as I looked.  What should I choose for him?  I didn’t know him all that well, but I knew he did look good in the earrings he was wearing now.  There was definitely a reason he always wore those.
I noticed Jin watching me out of the corner of my eye.  This made me a bit embarrassed, but it didn’t matter.  I had to be particular about what I chose.  These would be one of the few things he remembered me by when we parted ways, that was for sure.
Eventually, I found a pair of earrings I thought would fit him well.  I pulled them out and held them up.
“What do you think of these?”
“Chains?”
I nodded. “They’d look good on you, don’t you think?”
“I’m not sure,” he laughed. “I’ve never worn anything like that, not even in theater.”
“Great!  Something new for your collection, then!”
“I supposed so.” He took the earrings from me and held one of them up next to his ear. “What do you think?”
“It looks awesome!  We should definitely get those!”
He nodded. “All right, we’ll get these ones.  Should we head to the liquor store now?”
“In a few minutes.  I need to talk to my mom real quick and pay for these.  We should get some snow cones on our way out.  What do you think?”
“That’s a great idea!  I’ll wander around outside while I wait for you, ok?”
I nodded, and he left the shop.  I walked over to the counter and paid my mom for the earrings.
“Do you like him?” she asked.
“What?  Where would you get an idea like that?”
She gave me her all-knowing look, and I sighed.
“Ok, maybe I like him a little bit.” I was quick to change the subject. “There’s something I wanted to ask.  Jin wanted to spend my birthday with me, and I was wondering if it was ok if I bring him with me to the dolphin tour?”
She laughed. “Of course!  It’s your birthday.  As long as he’s not joining us for canoeing.  It’s too late to add him now.”
I shook my head. “I know that.  Besides, I do want to spend some time with just you and Dad on my birthday.”
“Of course.  Did he say you were going to the liquor store?”
I nodded. “He and Yoongi said that I should try a few kinds of alcohol on my birthday.”
“Oh, did they?  Be safe, whatever you do.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
After Jin and I got our snow cones, we headed over to the liquor store.
“It is legal for me to go in here, right?” I asked.
“Yeah.  You just can’t buy anything.”
The two of us browsed the different wines and champagnes as we ate our snow cones.
“Have you ever had any of these?” I asked as I looked at a bottle of wine.
“Not most of them, no.  I haven’t drunk much, to be honest.  I’ve had beer here and there, but that’s about it.” He pulled out his phone as it chimed. “My mom suggests rosé.”
I nodded. “I guess we’ll get that and some champagne, then.  But…which one?”
He ran his hands over a few bottles. “Maybe this one?”
“I suppose that should be fine.  Does Yoongi have any suggestions?”
“I’m sure he’ll already have bought them if he has any,” Jin laughed.
I smiled.
As we walked around the liquor store, I considered how long it had been since I’d really spoken to Ellie.  Maybe a week wasn’t that long to go without talking to your friend, but it was definitely a long time for us.  Usually, we spent a day around each of our birthdays together, but she hadn’t even asked what I was doing for the day.  I would’ve invited her to hang out with me when I went over to Yoongi’s, but she wasn’t old enough to drink yet, so she would’ve probably just felt left out.  It felt strange not talking to her.  Sure, we’d both been busy, but even when we’d been in college, we’d taken time to text each other at least once a day.
I texted her that night when I got home.  The response I got was short.
“Teo and I have been hanging out.  Sorry.  Maybe we can get together next week.”
Well.  I guess that told me where we stood.
I ended up walking over to Yoongi’s by myself come Monday.   I’d headed home for a quick change of clothing before I headed over, so Jin had gone by himself.  As I walked, I realized that I was feeling pretty out of it.  My best friend had abandoned me.  On my birthday, of all days.  It wasn’t like I had other friends to see either.  Sure, I had Jin and Yoongi, but as sweet as they were, it wasn’t the same.  They were two people I’d barely known for three weeks.  I’d known Ellie since third grade.
Maybe this was my fault.  I hadn’t really made the effort to talk to her since I’d gotten back in town, so maybe she was mad at me about that.  Our conversation at the music store hadn’t ended all that well since I’d run out of there, so it would be reasonable if she was mad at me.  That didn’t mean it felt good to be ignored on my birthday, though.
I was just going to let it go.  Tonight, I was going to have a good time with Jin and Yoongi and a few bottles of alcohol.  We had a little over a month until school started up again, so I was going to make the most out of these next few weeks, with or without Ellie.  I knocked on Yoongi’s door.
“It’s open,” I heard him call from inside.
I stepped inside and headed to the living room.  Suddenly, all the lights turned on.
“Surprise!”
My eyes widened. “What?”
I glanced around.  There weren’t that many people here, but it was more than I’d been expecting.  Jin, Yoongi, my parents, Jin’s grandparents, Ellie, and Mateo were all here.  There was a cake on the kitchen counter, and there was a banner hanging over the fireplace that read ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ISABELLE!’  It was clearly handmade, and I’d recognize Ellie’s handwriting anywhere.  She hadn’t been mad at me.
“We decided to surprise you,” Jin smiled. “What do you think?”
“I think this is awesome!” I hugged him. “Thank you!” I turned to Ellie. “And you!  Get over here!”
She laughed and crossed the room to hug me. “We surprised you, right?”
“You sure did!  I thought you were mad at me!”
She scoffed. “Mad at you?  I could never be mad at you!” She paused. “Actually, I am a little mad that you’re drinking without me tonight.”
“Don’t worry.  We can do it on your birthday too.”
“I’m lucky school doesn’t start before my birthday this year.”
It turned out that Jin and Yoongi bought a few more bottles than I’d picked out on Saturday.  We didn’t need much for eight people, though.
“Can I at least smell yours?” Ellie asked as I poured a glass of wine.
“You can smell it,” I nodded with a laugh.
She leaned in close to me. “So, any progress with the boyfriend?”
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Ok, fine.  Any progress with Jin?”
“What kind of progress?”
“Have you guys…” she lowered her voice even further. “Kissed?”
I scoffed. “No.”
“What?  What do you mean you haven’t kissed?  You guys have been hanging out for a whole week!”
“Yeah, well, we’re not you and Mateo.”
She shook her head. “You guys have to kiss at least once before he goes home.”
“No, we don’t.  In fact, I’d rather we not kiss.”
“Why?”
“I can’t be in a relationship with him, El.  He lives up in Greenville.”
“Which is what, an hour from Columbia?  Don’t be dramatic.  You two could totally date.  I’m gonna be down in Florida, and Mateo and I are still going to find a way to make it work.  Relationships aren’t just kissing, you know.  You can have a meaningful conversation over the phone.”
“All I’ve seen you and Mateo do is kiss.  Are you sure you’re the person who should be telling me this?”
Ellie slapped my shoulder. “Oh, shush.  Just listen to me.”
“I don’t think I will.”
It was hours before the party ended.  The vast majority of us had clearly drunken.  Mateo took Jin’s grandparents home, and that left the rest of us to clean up.
“That was the best birthday party I’ve ever had,” I laughed as I stacked the paper plates we’d used. “Yoongi, that wine you bought was awesome.”
“I’m glad you liked it.  That’s one of my favorite ones.”
Jin tugged on my sleeve. “Let’s go outside.  The stars are bright tonight.”
I followed him out to the backyard eagerly.  Yoongi’s place was completely dark, so if we laid on the ground, we could see the stars pretty well.  Jin sat down in the grass and tugged my hand, beckoning me to sit down with him.  I joined him, and the two of us looked up at the sky together.
“There’s not many constellations.”
I hummed.  Regardless, the stars were pretty.  My own yard wasn’t really a great place for viewing stars.  I lay down in the grass.  This was a moment I’d put in my back pocket and keep forever.  If I wasn’t too drunk to remember it, that was.  I couldn’t remember how much I’d had to drink.
“Hey, Isa?”
“Yes, Jin?”
“Can I kiss you?”
He was still sitting up, so it didn’t take much effort for me to look at him.  My logical mind would’ve told him no, but I had at least three glasses of various kinds of alcohol in me, so I wasn’t thinking straight.
“Yeah.  Kiss me, Jin.”
He looked conflicted for a second, but then he leaned over me and kissed me.  I grinned like a fool against his lips.
“This is my first kiss,” I mumbled.
“I shouldn’t have kissed you while we’re drunk,” he decided.  It was too late now.
But of course, alcohol had taken all reason out of our heads, so we kissed under the stars for a few moments.
“I think I need to go home, Jin,” I giggled. “I can’t keep my eyes open.”
“You could sleep in one of Yoongi’s spare rooms.”
I hummed. “Why does he have so many spare rooms, anyways?  He’s twenty-one.  He can’t be rich enough to own a whole house.”
“Yeah…it’s one of his dad’s houses.” Jin’s eyes widened, and he smacked his palm over his mouth. “Don’t tell him I told you.”
I laughed stupidly, like a drunk person would.  I wouldn’t remember this in the morning.  I wouldn’t remember any of this.  I wouldn’t remember who owned Yoongi’s house…and I wouldn’t remember my first kiss….
I woke up on my own bed the next morning with about four blankets piled on top of me.  Had I walked home?  I couldn’t recall.  As I blinked at my wall, I remembered what had happened the previous night.
I flew out of bed and ran to my bathroom before staring at myself in the mirror.  I’d kissed Jin!  Was I an idiot?  This was going to ruin my life forever!
I ran back into my room and dug through my sheets, finally coming across my phone.  I had a few texts from Jin.
“Good morning!  Yoongi’s dragging me out for breakfast.  He said food is good for hangovers or something.  I don’t know how to tell him I don’t have a hangover.  Would you like to meet up later today?  Maybe I could take you on an official date.”
I threw my phone down on my bed.  This was not supposed to happen!  Dating Jin was supposed to just be some wild dream I had to carry me through the summer, and then real life would resume when I went back to university.  I picked up my phone and replied to him.
“Sorry, I have work!  Maybe we can meet up later?”
I didn’t wait for his response before jumping in the shower.  Even if Jin didn’t have a hangover, it appeared that I did.  Hopefully I could make it through work today without any issues.
I hated how my heart jumped when I saw Jin’s response of a few hearts and a kissing emoji.  I was supposed to be immune to him by now.  I’d lived this long without him, so surely I could live the rest of my life without him.  University wasn’t the place to be in a relationship, especially one that was long distance.
I shoved my phone deep into the pocket of my shorts, and then I headed to work.  I didn’t know when Jin was leaving, but I hoped it was soon.  The sooner he left, the less it would hurt to let him go.
I met up with Ellie for dinner that evening, and I could tell she wanted to rip out every last hair on my head after I told her what had happened.
“You idiot!  He’s clearly whipped for you, and you won’t even give it a chance?”
“I can’t let myself get attached, El.” I frowned as I felt tears flood my eyes. “I got attached the first time, and it hurt so bad when he left.”
“But, Isa, this isn’t the same as last time.  You’re both adults now.  The world is so much smaller than it used to be.  You guys are so close you could drive to see each other during the school year.”
I shrugged. “I just can’t.”
“Is there anything that could make you?”
“Well, if we lived in the same town or something, maybe we could make it work, but….”
Ellie sighed. “Come on, Isa.  This is silly.  You should go talk to him.”
I shook my head. “I’m not going to.  I’m just going to have to let him go.”
It was clear Ellie was having none of my sulking, so I sulked at the snack bar instead.  As much as I really didn’t feel like working, it gave me something to do during the day.  Jin hadn’t been around on the beach, either, so I didn’t really have a reason to avoid my job.  He was probably fishing with Yoongi.  I vaguely remembered them talking about going shark fishing at some point, and a place with a bunch of little kids really wasn’t the place to do that.  Thankfully.
My luck ran out on Friday, though.  Jin came walking up to the stand just like he had the first day he’d been here.  Once again, I was trying to find all the ways I could bury myself in the sand.
“Hey, Isa,” he smiled at me. “You haven’t been answering my texts.  What’s up?”
“Uh, I can’t really date you.  I’m sorry if I mislead you.”
“Oh.”
That pretty smile he’d had on his face before disappeared now, and I felt guilty for making him feel so.
“That’s ok.  I’m headed back to Greenville next week.”
“You are?” I asked in distress.  I shouldn’t have been upset, really.  This was what I’d been saving myself from by ignoring him.
He nodded. “My parents wanted to see me for a little while before I have to head back to school.  I’ll see you next summer, I guess?”
I offered him a small smile. “Right.  Next summer.”
I didn’t let myself be disappointed when he left the next week.  Ellie dragged me out to say goodbye to him, but all I could offer him was a wave as he drove away.  I was letting all this go.
It wasn’t until Ellie’s birthday party that I finally let it all out.  Three glasses of wine was clearly too much for me.  It kept me saying things I’d never intended to reach the world.
“I shouldn’t have said no to him, El.  He’s the sweetest man alive, and I let him go all because he lives too far away,” I cried. “I’m such an idiot.”
“Yeah, you are.”
Man, she could’ve at least softened the blow.
“I should call him,” I decided.
Ellie was too quick for me, though.  She whipped my phone out of my hand before I could even unlock it.
“We don’t make hasty decisions while drunk, Isa.  Remember what happened last time?”
“Yes, I kissed Jin.  Now give me my phone.”
Except that alcohol also seemed to take away my coordination and strength as well, so getting my phone away from Ellie was a lost cause.  I finally gave in and laid across her lap.
“Tell me I’ll forget about him when I go back to university, El.”
“You’ll forget about him when you go back to university.”
“I know you don’t mean it.”
She laughed. “I know you know.”
School started not too long after that.  I had to admit that the two-hour drive up to Columbia felt even longer than it was supposed to.  Sitting in a car for more than ten minutes felt like torture.
By the time I’d unpacked my car, I was starving.  It wasn’t near dinnertime yet, but I was going to eat anyways.  There were about fifteen fast food places within a mile of the school, so I settled for some pizza.  Granted, no one besides a professional football player needed an entire pizza to themselves, but I didn’t care.  I was going to eat as much of this pizza as I pleased without anyone judging me.  Ok, my roommate would probably be judging me.  But it wasn’t any of her business how much pizza I ate.
I was happily walking out of the pizza place with my dinner when I looked up at the man who was holding the door for me.
“Jin?  What are you doing here?”
He pointed a thumb back to my university. “I go to the UofSC?”
I ended up sharing my pizza with him as we sat at a nearby park and chatted.
“You’ve gone here for two years?  How have I never seen you?”
He laughed. “I have no clue.”
“I’m so sorry about what happened after my birthday.  I just couldn’t handle long-distance.”
He nodded. “It’s ok.  I understand.  I just wish we’d actually talked about it.  Maybe we wouldn’t have been upset at each other?”
I smiled.
“So, what do you say?  Now that we’re in the same place all year…can I take you on a date?”
I had to admit, I’d never expected things to turn out this way.  I’d never even considered him being at the same school as me, but I’d gotten that miracle after all.
If we shared a few kisses under the sunset that evening, no one but us knew.  It was pretty amazing that we had the assurance of spending the next two years together.

Imagine this in High School Life! Scenario/Headcanon: almost all the characters and SPORTS!!! (long intro and long post, but pls read I had to write this twice🥺)
@sammyjomcl commentary on the summer event and how Nathaniel is super competitive (I reblogged it earlier today) made me think of a really nice scenario I would have loved to see on HSL!!!
But first, I have to explain how school works in Brazil bc it's relevant to the scenario. For schools with a large number of students, It's common for the years/grades to be divided into classes (for example, A/B/C/D/E, they don’t have anything to do with grades!! The division is randomly made). I was in class A for most of my school years, in my school there was an average of 35 to 40 students in each class, but the number changes depending on the school!!).
When I was in school we used to have 2 types of competitions, one called "home games"  (idk how to translate literally, but it was basically a sports competition between all the classes of every year), the classes would compete in categories like swimming, volleyball, basketball, soccer, handball, dodgeball, chess, etc) and the other one was a "gincana" (the only two translations I can find for it is scavenger hunt or gymkhana, the first one really has nothing to do with it in my opinion); in this second competition, the school would take us to the beach/club and the years and classes would also have to compete in different categories that could change every year, but the classics were: dancing (with about 5 different styles), sketch (we had to do a short-acting or a short musical with a specif theme in mind), we also had to collect food/clothes/toys for donations and others that I can't remember well; other games would depend on the place the “gincana” would happen that year, so if we went to a club with a pool, there would be some really fun activities in the pool… Sometimes we had “soap soccer”, which is SUPER FUN, it’s basically a soccer game but with no rules, and is played on an inflatable arena that’s wet... what kind of description is that...? just have the photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH AND I FORGOT TO SAY, for the "home games" there are male and female competitions for each sport.
SO, THAT BEING SAID, LET'S JUST IMAGINE THAT SWEET AMORIS HAS MORE THAN  18 STUDENTS AND ENOUGH PEOPLE TO MAKE SUCH AN EVENT HAPPEN, OKAY?! Let’s go to the scenario (FINALLY, and if you saw my last post I’m still upset about this stupid website omg)
____________
I can't remember if there were 1 or 2 leaders for those competitions, but idc Kim would be one FOR SURE. She would make everyone participate, bc "the more we have, the more we can win! So get your asses up those chairs and start moving! We have teams to form!" And everyone would just follow her orders bc we believe in Kim supremacy in this household. If there were 2 leaders, I think Nath could be the other one, although I really can see Kentin being one of them as well, but, at the same time, I don't think he would actually candidate himself as one, he would accept if the majority chose him as one tho.
Starting with Nath, I completely agree that he’s super competitive, aside from that, he’s also a fast learner! So I believe he would be a jack-of-all-trades, bc even if he doesn’t know how to play something well he will try to learn it just to help his class to get 1st place or on the podium. AND LET ME TELL YOU, everyone’s out there talking about Castiel being hot-headed, but Nath goes blue every 2 dialogues, so I EXPECT THIS BOY TO BE SUPER PASSIVE-AGRESSIVE ON THE GAMES TOO. If he doesn’t like someone on the other team, he might ACCIDENTALLY throw a ball right on their faces… But what can we do? That can happen… Anyways kkkkk talking about his talents now. Swimming. Yes. Just picture it… I’ll go to the next one because I’M A LOYAL WOMAN! Really good Volleyball player, he might as well be the captain of the team!!! Baseball is not a thing here in Brazil so I know nothing about it, but for the aesthetic, I’m gonna put him there too!! Like I said, in the end, this boy is everywhere.
Okay so in MY headcanon and in MY personal wonderland inside my head, Dajan is a student in Sweet Amoris (same year, but not the same class as Candy), he is part of the basketball club and he is friendly with Castiel. JUST IMAGINE THEM COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER IN BASKETBALL OMG!!!!!!! I really can’t believe beemoov lost the opportunity of actually making Cas part of the club and friends with Dajan… I will never get over it. But anyway, we all know this stupid redhead (i love him so much, i need to fall in love with someone real that doesn't break my fkn heart, but that rant was yesterday's rant) would be like I don't give a damn about this stupid competition. I couldn’t care less”, but he would be the FIRST to start a scene bc of an “unfair” foul. Yellow card for you, sir. Calm down. But yeah, he always complains, but in the end, he’s also competitive when defending his team, he won’t accept losing, so if he plays, he plays! Talents: basketball; soccer…. holy f*ck, I admit I’m being 100% biased here bc I love watching soccer and I also love Castiel so don’t come for me. I was wondering if he would participate in swimming too… He always says he loves the beach, but idk, I believe he’s good at it, but it’s def not his 1st option. Y’all don’t want to play dodgeball with him, Nath, and Ken on the same team… And talking about him!!!
Best boy Kentin is also an ACE, just like Nath I can see him participating in many categories for the same reason as him, he’s either good at it or learns it fast enough to stand for his class on the games. Am I taking it too seriously? Well… yeah, okay. Definitely not as hotheaded as Cas, but somewhere in between him and Nath. I really see Ken as a potential “hidden card”, you don’t know he’s good at playing something until he actually plays it and shocks everyone!!! And you know… for science, FOR SCIENCE, Kentin and soccer… Have you ever thought about it? No? Then take your time… FOR SCIENCE! In conclusion, he’s the soccer team’s captain and you can’t change my mind. And for the aesthetic, I was going to say baseball as well, but football (American football, with the helmets and all that… I also don’t know sh*t about it) sounds VERY interesting, don’t you think? Running is not a category in home games (it wasn’t when I was at school and my brother said it still isn’t now), but if it was, he would be one of the bests! And before I finish with Ken, I think he would also play chess? He’s probably not the best, but he can play more than the basics and can be quite good at it.
But do you know someone that IS a chess genius? Yup, it’s him, Armin! He def always finds a way to use his computer or phone when the wi-fi is not working and that way is to play chess against the robot on that windows app. We all know sports that make people sweat are not really his thing (although he’s super fit, so he’s totally hiding something hmmm…), but ngl I can see him playing basketball actually, he gives me that vibe… Oh, and since we’re talking about sports and we got to see skating in the Olympic Games, Armin also seems like a skater boy for me... Let me be honest tho, he would be the LEAST competitive player ever, quite ironic… So yeah, if he loses, he loses; if he wins, great! If he 100% doesn’t want to play and is dragged to the gym, he’s gonna be that guy with arms crossed in the corner that starts moving when someone yells at him. But since Armin likes to help his friends, let’s believe he’s not like that most of the time hehe. Oh, I almost forgot, table tennis is also a category!!! He would play it for sure, even if just for fun.
So… Now we have Lys. I’m really sorry for Lys fans, but I can’t see him playing any sports… He would participate in the games to help complete the teams. I feel bad for thinking that, but I honestly can’t think of any. I don’t think he’s a disaster at sports, but I also don’t think it’s his thing. I do see him going to places using a bike and calmly riding his bike for hours in parks and places with nature so he can daydream and think about life while connecting with nature and doing some kind of physical activity (if you know BTS, yes, I was inspired by Namjoon, next question). I don’t think he would play chess bc for me he seems like he would forget the rules and the basic moves/strategies in 2 minutes, so yeah :/ BUT PLS TELL ME ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS AND HEADCANONS, I will love to read them!!!
Hmm since we talked about all the crushes, let’s talk about Alexy and the girls (the ones I have headcanon…):
Alexy: I actually think he would be a great volleyball player! And would participate in dodgeball and dancing competitions too. Not like his brother, he’s a competitive player and also might let the ball slip from his hand making it land on someone’s face…
Amber: Yup, I do have a headcanon for her. I can see her participating in dancing competitions too and also in volleyball (Damn, I’m being super biased with volleyball… not sorry tho). We know Amber, she would be SUPER petty to the other teams and make some low moves bc she just won’t let them take her trophy.
Charlotte: Chess.
Iris: an all-rounder just like Ken and Nath! She will defend her class in every possible way and will help complete the teams even if she doesn’t know how to play. Good swimmer!!!
Kim: I think I don’t need to say much here. She’s EVERYWHERE! Maybe the captain of the women’s basketball team (and the club even), I would be afraid to play soccer with her… or any other sport tbh
Li: not a category but she gives me a ballerina vibe
Melody: y’all… why did I write her name and thought “volleyball team’s captain”... I can’t defend myself anymore kkkkkk But yeah, her personality reminds me of a friend of mine that was so calm and shy on daily basis, but once she got her feet on the gym to play volleyball she would be the most competitive, hotheaded person EVER, she’s still like that today and she’s an awesome player too!
Peggy: once again, I’m giving those to her bc her looks remind me of another friend who’s a great swimmer and good at soccer and table tennis. So I’ll give them to her.
Priya: y’all wouldn’t have a chance against her in dancing competitions. Great runner!!! Very competitive, but chill. She’s def an all-rounder and is up to be part of the teams that need to be completed. Good at chess too!
Rosa: just like Lys, sports is def not her thing… I think she would participate ONLY if she were the only solution for the team to be completed. BUT, I do see her as competitive and once she gets upset about an adversary she will forget about the rules and make it personal….
Violette: I can see her playing table tennis. Not competitive at all, but will feel bad for her class if she ends up losing. Might be playing chess too.
OOF THAT  WAS INTENSE (I THOUGHT I HAD 3 PAGES ON GOOGLE BUT IT’S ACTUALLY 5…)
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH if you read all of this, it’s good to be writing again even if it’s not really a story!!! As I said, all of this is just my headcanon and I would love to see what are your thoughts too about this topic!!

Had a writing workshop today and it was great! We had sort of free range to decide what exactly we wanted to do. The premise was to choose a novel of our liking, analyse the writing style and then imitate said style in a completely different genre. So we had some people using the flowery description heavy language of a fantasy novel to describe a mundane day in the real world. Or the creepy dispense of a horror novel used to describe a fluffy movie night between two friends. (The friends were watching a rom-com so it wasn’t like they could somehow match the vibes to the movie.) It was great!

Not to be a cliché Trans Girl, but gosh I love coding so much. It’s so much fun.

[D3A’s group chat right after Franzi sees that post.
F: Is your Coding club girlfriend finally back?
K: I have no idea what you are talking about and she is not my girlfriend.
F: Not yet. Which is why you should finally ask her out on a date. Or Marie should. You two are so badly crushing on that girl and neither of you have yet to actually make a move. If you take any longer I’ll do it for you.]

The romantic tension of being taken care of by your friends after being hurt.
[private conversation after Kim and Franzi see that post.
Franzi: You get hurt and that’s your first instinct? Posting a vague post on Tumblr?
Marie: *shrugs*
Kim: Well, it’s vague enough to just seem like random thought with no real life implications.
Franzi: Seriously??? … What ever.
Marie: I mean people are reblogging it and agreeing.
Franzi: *looking at the post and reblogs* They are assigning characters and ships to it…
Marie: Well obviously.
Franzi:… I don’t even know how to argue with that.
Kim: Franzi. It’s not that serious. You are just stressed right now.
Franzi: Well we are in the freaking hospital after all!
Marie: Wanna hold my hand to feel less worried?
Franzi:… yes.
Marie: *looking at Kim* You too?
Kim: *nods and the three end up holding hands to calm themselves down*

Jeffrey Palmer wears blond faux locs. (Cause I want faux locs right now, but I don’t have the time for an appointment and I just got braids done.) He would totally wear goddess locs, cause he doesn’t give a damn about “gender rules” and that’s all I’ll say.

Unusual post for me but it needs to be said. I feel like the authors of “The three investigators” tend to fall into the “we were trying to be misogynistic but ended up accidentally writing something with queer energy” category quite a lot. An audio drama example: Switching out Kelly for Jeffrey in “Die drei Fragezeichen Das Geisterschiff“. Now you made it unintentionally queer, cause you so desperately didn’t want to include Peter’s canon girlfriend. Anyway thatqueermayhem and justusjonasesautism just had to listen to me rant about the misogyny in these books.

If I see one more post of someone claiming “The three investigators” doesn’t have misogyny/sexism, I’m gonna scream. Y’all can’t be serious, when these stories are littered with misogyny/sexism. Like I get it. You don’t want to admit that there are flaws in these stories you probably liked since you were a child, but for the love of it, stop it! They literally wrote out female characters, cause the audience supposedly disliked them. And you are claiming this series doesn’t have misogyny??? Well when there are barely any female characters chances to see misogynistic characterisations are rarer. (Psst they still exist. Like it’s not that the few female characters don’t fall into sexist stereotypes sometimes. And just because you don’t notice them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.)

I was debating cutting the part of Kim mentioning the anti indigenous racism, cause D3A also has (at least) two instances of the I-word being used, but I decided against it, cause it’s something I think she would post. And I personally would like to believe that all the characters (also the characters from the D3F universe) would stop using it if they were made aware of the fact that it is a racial slur.
The only times I’ve seen people claiming D3F doesn’t have misogyny was when they where putting down D3A as so much worse. Arguing that D3F supposedly didn’t have misogyny while D3A had.
Slightly of topic, but I really do want to draw Jeffrey with goddess locs now. Ahh! He would look so pretty with them.
Is this shamelessy plugging some of my personal D3F headcanons? Yes. I don’t care.
Listen if I was immersed in the Miss Marple books, I would have also added posts about that. I am how ever not at all immersed with the stories. (I wish I could do Franzi’s love for the character justice.)
(Planning on drawing this in the future. Don’t know when yet. I don’t know how to do these fake screenshots of social media accounts.)

greedy for power, for honour, for love.
Tumblr media
minatozaki sana. cis female. she/her. presenting lady sato sayuri, twenty five-year-old non - bender loyal to house takao and house sato. friendly yet lazy, they find themself supportive of fire lord chaesan’s reign. will this be their salvation or their undoing ?
ooc / i’m getting to replies i swear swear but pink haired barb sayuri is back. lots more added details about her below and like ten detailed plot ideas, but she’s pretty much the same. like to plot! but i’ll be in everyone’s ims in a sec too.
“hey! you’re looking so cute today. i have a quick favor to ask…”
name lady sato sayuri
alias sayuri
age 25
gender cis female
pronouns she/her
status noble
ability non - bender, axe wielder
alliance house takao and house sato
occupation part time lady of hammerhal, full time jewelry designer
personality bubbly outgoing affectionate perceptive loyal spoiled lazy manipulative superficial escapist avoidant
moral alignment lawful neutral
elements air and water
likes hot soups, sweet pastries, jewelry, the beach, sunny weather
hates chores
goals hopefully none
fears expectation
hobbies resting, relaxing, making beaded jewelry, taking long walks on the beach, supporting her friends and family, swimming
appearance sometimes red or orange, but currently pink hair to her waist usually decorated with ribbons, or tied into one braid or two pigtails. outfits are extremely [ this maybe i came too prepared this time ] two-piece sets usually consisting of a cropped top and a flowy skirt or a long skirt with a high slit—always looks like she’s going to a party by the beach. colors worn are burgundy red or light pink. always wearing some kind of jewelry.
aesthetic the golden  hour fading into dusk, heavy eyelids drooping at midday and melting peach sorbet
facts youngest child and only daughter in a family full of militarily accomplished older brothers so grew up very spoiled and used to people attending to her needs and doing things for her. expert axe wielder, as is the tradition of her house, but often openly undermines her own talent so people don’t start expecting her to rush to the frontlines to defend her nation or anything crazy like that. wants to see the world and eat food from everywhere, but also can’t be bothered to leave her house. it’s a dilemma. loves dancing and always appreciates a fun party. has an extreme aversion to commitment especially concerning love and marriage (”i’m only 25 what am i a child bride”), and though sayuri(an empath) gets attached pretty easily, finds any kind of ~real~ emotion intimidating and annoying.
faceclaim minatozaki sana
“i clearly tried too hard. i’ll just go rest up … or something.“
just a pink haired barb rly
smart but lazy trope
youngest child and only daughter in a family full of militarily accomplished older brothers. i haven’t sent in her family info but house sato of hammerhal is an old house known for their specialized axe-wielder military and for having the claim to the country’s largest ironwood forest. house seat is stationed deep in the forests of hammerhal, up in the sato mountains, surrounded by trees of ironwood. house words are iron from ice because it’s unusually cold in their territory and they’ve been known to get the rare hail storm or snowfall every few years.
back to sayuri! she picks up on things really quickly the problem is she never bothers picking up anything. her hands are too soft and delicate for manual labor! or at least that’s what she’ll tell you
does the bare minimum but nothing less
pretty much a floater. no burning passions or big dreams. she just wants to live life breathe air she knows somehow shes gonna get there and feel so wonderful
yeah she just wants to make friends and have a good time. but at the same time, despite her deep hatred for responsibility and much to her chagrin, she’s imbued with a deep sense of duty to her family. dedication laying dormant, like a flint waiting for a spark.
about her life so far: she hasn’t done or accomplished much beyond what’s expected of her. had average grades in school, mastered the axe as is the tradition of her house. really thankful she’s not a bender because that would mean so much more training
shows no interest in entering the military though all of her brothers have and are accomplished. she says it’s because her brothers have set such a perfect example that anything she does will only cause disappointment.
these are her muse inspos if that helps paint a clearer picture: hilda goneril (fire emblem), garrett mcneil (superstore), anne shirley (anne of green gables), erin hannon (the office), olenna tyrell (game of thrones), ty lee (atla), the song movement by hozier
plot ideas!
these are all potential plot ideas and i’m not looking to fill every singleone. will close up plots if some get taken up and/or contradict each other!
( req. fellow trickster someone who also manipulates or knows more than they let on etc ) they see right through each other and challenge each other in a healthy way that fosters self improvement for both of them. they’re both headstrong and perceptive, which is exactly what they both need.
( req. model noble type ) a fellow noble who sees right through sayuri’s constant attempts at tricking people into doing things for her. they try to lecture her, change her for the better. and yet, always somehow end up victim to the very tricks they try to steer her away from.
( req. a Nice Person ) they get seriously hurt doing something sayuri tricked them into doing but they’re such a peach they’re like no its ok dw abt it i was happy to do it its ok ! but sayuri feels weirdly guilty so she keeps trying to bring them stuff and even…..does things for them
someone whose family she’s so unprecedentedly curious about. through the years, without meaning to, they’ve fed her their entire family’s history. break out the family photo album when she visits their stronghold. orrrrr, maybe she’s actually curious about the person themself…  ? ( possible crush plot ! )
sayuri’s current big fat crush she’s just down horrendous for someone who straightup avoids going to hammerhal atp even for official business duties bec they always end up beguiled into staying for literal months and neglecting duties back home because spending time with sayuri is fun. but sayuri’s starting to feel like theyre avoiding her(CONFLICT) her bday is coming up though so she will force them to visit. ( doesnt have to be requited or a ship although i do have my sailor cap ready  could be fun and light could be angst idk shes just a jelly doughnut except instead of jelly shes filled with love. bonus pts if theyre doomy and gloomy type/vibe but not a req also open to guys gals and pals )
( req. maybe someone hotheaded or gets involved in a lot of fights brawls etc ) a dear friend of hers who’s always getting into fights. she has patched up their wounds many, many times, and doesn’t tire of gently advising them to stop getting involved in brawls. “come on, let’s get you to the infirmary. you look ghoulish.”
the two of them are jokey flirty friends always kidding around about betrothals and marriages. it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye, as it were. ( intentionally vague ! im thinking it could go fun genuine friends route like theyre just super comfy with each other and have a deep understanding of each others limits so they can joke around its just the nature of their friendship to be flirty and playful OR a more srs angsty pining route where shit hits the fan when someone actually gets involved with someone else or like someone bring up For Real getting married and the other person responds some type of way etc all that drama, lets brainstorm )
( req. someone neat and organized and not lazy or maybe loves cleaning, probably a noble ) childhood friends. sayuri used to get so excited for their visits. they’d have slumber parties and build sprawling blanket forts in sayuri’s room and stay up until odd hours, just talking and talking. of course, after they were done, sayuri would leave all the blankets and pillows lying around. this person always cleaned up their mess, and then some. sayuri’s room was always cleaner than it was before they arrived. some things never change … ? ( setting the scene for possible wholesome bff forever thing theyre the pair laughing behind their hands gossiping about everyone OR angsty childhood friends fell apart bec of insert reason here all that awkward staring across the room and sitting next to each other quietly at dinner….mmmm. idk lets brainstorm ! )
theyre clueless about jewelry but want something special to give their insert loved one here. she helps them!!! if only because she thinks theyre so hopelessly clueless and knows they won’t ever do a good job
they don’t get swayed by her compliments and smiles. it frustrates her really. especially because she really needs [insert thing here] from them.

Prompt: Swim
Words: 984
Fandom: Stranger Things
A/N: A short beach episode for the Hawkins Crew. I was going to write some hurt/comfort for today’s prompt, but I wasn’t in the right headspace for that, so some nice happy fluff it is.
Summary: The Hawkins Crew finally have a beach day. All is right in the world and Steve properly shows off his swimming skills to Eddie. Continuation of [Long Rest and a Level Up]
-
Steve laid back onto Eddie’s chest as he smiled at the kids playing in the sand and splashing around in the water. Joyce and Hopper were under a large beach umbrella, lounging on two beach chairs while holding hands, a beer held in the other. Jonathan was walking around, looking for the perfect angle to take a picture without the sun’s glare ruining the shot.
Robin was helping Max and Lucas build a sand fort on one side while Nancy helped Mike and Will build theirs, crouching down and thinking of strategies before the sand wars began. Somehow, Argyle got Dustin and El looking for seashells, saying that he could bring one back for Suzie once he drives up to Utah to see Eden.
“You know, you’d feel better if you weren’t wearing black clothes all the time,” Steve said as Eddie wiped his forehead of sweat for the eighth time.
Eddie rolled his eyes. “And ruin my aesthetic? No thank you.”
“No one cares about your aesthetic, Eddie.”
“I do! I care, Steve. And don’t tell me you stripping off your obnoxious polo is ruining your aesthetic either because you showing this off…,” Eddie swept a hand over Steve’s shirtless body stretched out on top of him, “Is part of your aesthetic.”
“I just don’t want my boyfriend dying from a heat stroke on our first vacation,” Steve said with a shrug, tilting his head back to look at him. “Who wears black pants to the beach? I even bought black swimming trunks for you before we came here.”
“You just want to take my clothes off so bad,” Eddie said in a low voice, smirking.
It was Steve’s turn to roll his eyes. Before he could retort, there was a screech that caused Steve to jerk up from Eddie’s lap. Max let out another shout before giggling, wiping the sand off her face before throwing a ball of sand to Mike.
Dustin hurried over with an emergency bucket of water, moving around like he was dodging bullets on a battlefield, before kneeling next to Max. She washed her hands then splashed her face clean, muttering thanks to Dustin before pulling him down to avoid another volley of sand.
El stood up and flung sand balls at Will and Mike, catching Nancy in the crossfires. Will got hit on the forehead, falling back and pretended to be dead while Mike got hit in the chest, acting like he was choking on his own blood. Steve shook his head. These are definitely Eddie’s children, too.
Steve relaxed, slumping back down with a sigh. Eddie rubbed his shoulders, loosening the knots in his muscles. “Like you said, we’re on vacation. Here –” Eddie paused, leaning forward and taking off his Iron Maiden shirt “ – Happy?”
Steve hummed, nodding. He felt Eddie shift around, getting settled back in the beach chair before adjusting Steve on his lap. There weren’t many people on this side of the beach, so they felt relieved that they wouldn't be chased out of town just for cuddling.
Over by the shore, the sand wars had died down and they were now washing up in the water. Mike stayed by the shore with Will while Dustin and Lucas dove in, teaching El how to tread water and swim forward.
“Steve!” Dustin shouted, frantically waving his hands in the air. “Come swim with us!”
“Yeah, come on Hawkins Swim Team Co-Captain!” Robin goaded, “Let’s race.”
“Does your limbs have enough coordination to even tread water, Buckley?” Steve asked, taking off his sunglasses and standing. “Wanna swim, Eds?”
“Nah, I’m good, babe,” Eddie said with a shake of his head. “I’ll just lounge here and gawk at you. Be your cheerleader and all that.”
“Suit yourself,” Steve said, giving him a quick peck on his lips before jogging over to the group, “Loser buys everyone ice cream!”
Eddie smiled, watching Steve run into the water. Him, Robin, and Lucas lined up while Dustin played referee. El went back to picking up seashells with Max who was telling her about the last time she had been on the beach growing up. Argyle was already sleeping in the shade, a towel laid out under him and a radio playing reggae music softly next to him. Nancy stepped away to join Jonathan, taking the bottle of water he offered. He stepped up behind her and cupped his hands over her forehead, shielding her eyes from the sun.
California seemed to be a nice place to start over. No wonder the Byers came here, even though they planned to move back to Hawkins. Still, it’s nice, with plenty to do in the city and a big music scene that Eddie could easily get into. He heard Robin had applied to a few schools, one of them being in San Francisco. Maybe when both him and Steve were done with tying up loose ends in Hawkins, they could move in with her or go anywhere, now that he’s thinking about it.
There is always a place in his heart for Hawkins. It’s where he grew up, after all. It’s where he met the most amazing people in his life. It’s where he met his love. His home.
A shadow loomed over him, blocking the sun from his eyes. Steve smirked at him, dripping saltwater all over Eddie as he bent over him and grabbed his wrists. Eddie didn’t have time to admire the view before his boyfriend slung him over his shoulder and carried him towards the water.
The kids cheered Steve made his way over to them, dunking both him and Eddie in the water. Eddie sputtered, splashing water in his face in irritation once they surfaced. Steve smiled, drawing him closer, erasing any traces of anger Eddie had with a kiss.
Away from Hawkins, no matter where they were, as long as Steve was with him, he was home.

Anything you’re looking forward to this month? Well, the month is nearly over now but I guess the long weekend even though I’m working for most of it lol.
What’s the current temperature? It was around 16 degrees but it felt colder because of the wind.
Have you or would you ever forage for mushrooms? I have done, yeah.
What’s something you dislike about spring time? I LOVE spring for the most part. The only thing I don’t like is how changeable it is and how hard it can be to dress for the weather.
What’s your favorite lollipop flavor? Raspberry or apple. I also loved the chocolate and vanilla Chup-a-Chups. Can you still get those? lol.
Are you into gardening and what do you enjoy planting? I love the idea of plants and flowers but being honest, I’m too lazy to maintain any kind of garden lol. We just have a lawn and a patio in the garden.
What’s some flowers you find to be pretty? Sunflowers, cherry blossoms, roses, jasmines, lily’s, orchids.
Would you say you’re easy to get along with? No.
Who did you last hold hands with? Mike.
