The friends we made along the way
Discussing who the characters are and what canon is, is one of fandom’s most familiar activities.
Fan reading, however, is a social process through which individual interpretations are shaped and reinforced through ongoing discussions with other readers. Such discussions expand the experience of the text beyond its initial consumption.
In the prevalence of this activity, we might see, not an interest in any final answer, but how the discussion itself legitimizes the existence of a canon.
It is further linked to a tendency for viewers to apply some criteria of fidelity to the adaptations, as most assume that the webtoon has canonical status and hence primacy on determining the contents and significance of the story.
At the recent Fan Studies Network North America Conference, Clark talked about negotiating a character’s key attributes even after (or even more so) as the canon material comes to an end.

In these discussions, we can see that the act of negotiating these character’s identity, fans, at the same time, construct said identity: if there can be a discussion about who this character is, they certainly are and their identity can be fixed – if for the length of a fic. Then again for another one. Then again.

An Introduction to Honkai Weaves, presented by Doctor Henry Clarke, (Formerly) of St Freya
(Note : This edition of the document was written shortly after the incident with the Wind Herrscher.)
Honkai Energy is all around us, in doses large and small. From the smallest of AE’s batteries to the Herrschers themselves. To be a Valkyrie, or analogous, requires one to have an immense understanding of this.
Honkai Energy, when used through the outlet of Humanity, and Intelligence as a whole, is best utilized through what are commonly called Weaves. Weaves are highly complex, layered semi-constructs of Honkai Energy, used in everything a Valkyrie does, be it enhancing their body beyond human comparison or summoning giant cat paws.
In this introduction, I will go over two of the most common and crucial weaves, while more complex and niche ones will be introduced to students individually.
Now, to begin with we have the Enhancement Weave, a fairly simple weave that you’ll become intimately familiar with soon enough. The Enhancement Weave, as should be obvious, enhances the physical form.
It’s laughably simple, in truth, to generate. While I can’t explain it’s workings in an understandable way here, as it’s something rather esoteric and they still won’t update the system to support graphs and images, I can explain what it does further.
The Enhancement Weave increases speed, strength, reaction time and so much more, but what’s important is two factors. 1) This enhancement uses your current state as a basis, meaning the better your condition the stronger you are. 2) When you unravel Deactivate if you want to be boring. the weave not all it’s effects are lost There are ways to trigger this effect without unraveling it, but all are highly complex. In fact, roughly 5% of the effect remains indefinitely. When you couple these two things you get the ever increasing power of a Valkyrie.
Now, onto the next weave, which is important less often to B rank Valkyries, but is essential if you seek the A rank, alongside simply making many other things easier.
I am, of course, talking about the Friction Weave. The Friction Weave, while having a gross oversimplification of a name, is truly necessary when you reach the levels of an A rank Valkyrie. Now, you are all likely to struggle with this weave, as while it’s considered among the basics it’s also one of the more complex weaves you’re likely to run into.
The weave itself is not of human creation. In fact, to my knowledge, it was copied unfathomable long ago from either a rather powerful Honkai Beast or a full on Herrscher, both of which are known to generate it by their very natures.
The Friction Weave has very little to do with friction, inherently. But ignoring that for now, what it does, most importantly, is negates sonic booms1. It’s this weave that allows A rank Valkyries to move at speeds in excess of Mach 2, when the situation calls for it. It’s this weave that allows the most massive of Honkai Beasts to even move without tearing themselves apart. It’s this weave, all of it. And we barely know how.
However, this isn’t the time to lament the limits of human knowledge. Instead, I have one last thing to mention regarding the Friction Weave. In certain atmospheric conditions, few of which are even vaguely natural in occurance, the weave actually has the opposite effect. It generates devastating effects of various natures instead, typically vaporising everything nearby.
(Archived note, attached to main document after transfer.) It is this fact that makes me believe that a fully realised Wind Herrscher would’ve been a threat like no other. While we never got any halfway decent scans of Wendy’s weave, battlesuit scanners meant to monitor the condition of Raiden Mei (Atmosperic sensors included to note possible stormfronts) detected forming type 1 and type 5 environments all around her during the event.
1 Which can be rather terrifying when they interact with Honkai Energy, being known to have pulverised solid steel and deafened everyone within 40 meters during testing.

Seven Snippets, Seven People
Thanks for the tag, @enchanted-lightning-aes!
This is going to be a longer one than usual, so snippets will be under the cut.
"Nice speech, green boy" I hear from behind me, and I whirl around to see Ashes, leading against a wall and looking ever so slightly shorter than before, their legs seeming subtly shorter than before, in an uncanny resemblance of their former self. I brush it off to a trick of the light, and sigh.
"You again?"
"Me again."
I roll my eyes. "Well, I suppose I'm glad that you liked the speech."
"Well, I'm not saying I liked it, but I'll be damned if you don't know how to wrap an audience around your finger."
"Really?"
"Yes. It's terrifying."
"Oh."
"But that's politics, isn't it?"
"Oh, I- I suppose it is."

"Why are people always surprised when I'm a reasonable person?"
"I don't know, it's just hard for me to trust people for who they are, you know?"
They look down, and sigh.
"Yeah. I know what you mean."
"So can you understand why I'm being like this?"
"I guess. But can you at least try and be nicer?"
"I suppose I can try"
"Great. Now, enjoy being politically correct, I'm going to go try and get as much money as I can out of drunk people, because the more that they buy, the more I can get paid!" They sink in a mock bow, and disappear into the crowd.

I hear the shout as soon as I open the door, and sigh. Jett is staring at me, with Alekto standing behind her, looking quite uncomfortable being left alone with her.
"Someone has died, Jett" he mutters under his breath, and immediately winces.
"What?"
"Yeah. Alya Maxwell. She's dead, Jett" I say bluntly.
"Oh. I- I see. Right."
"I told you! Why didn't you believe me?"
"It seems like something you'd make up to get off work. I wouldn't put that kind of sick joke past you."
"But you'd believe Ashes?" He sounds so offended, and it takes almost everything in me not to laugh.
"Yes. They're an honest person, with me at least, and I believe them."
"Unbelievable." He smiles through his mock-offended voice, and I can't help but laugh.
"Yeah, yeah, I show favouritism, what are you two going to do about it?" Jett says, smiling.

"How's Luke?" I ask. We always make some kind of small talk between customers, and today it feels like it's my turn to start the conversation.
"Oh, he's fine. He's really busy, you know, working at the council and all that, but we're managing to sneak some time in together where we can."
"That's why you were late today, right?"
"Yeah. Jett wanted my head, but I managed to calm her down enough. If I do it again though, you'll be saying goodbye to me for the rest of time"
"Yeah, you said." I shiver, and he smirks.
"Bet you can't wait for that though, eh?"
"I'm... not going to answer that," I laugh, " But I bet Luke would be disappointed.
"Nah, we all know that the Clarke bloodline dies with him, he was just keeping me around for the company."
"Wouldn't he miss that?"
"I'll leave him a cat in my will, that'll sort him out."
"Of course"

"So did you see it in the end?" I ask.
"Yeah, I made it just in time to see Cassius' speech."
"The one about his sister?"
"Yeah. It's a bit suspicious, isn't it? Why would he and his father go to such lengths to insist it wasn't them?" Hunter looks around, like she was just waiting for Tobias to jump out and send the Peacekeepers to arrest her.
"They want security. Tobias is panicking, he thinks that people aren't going to vote for him next summer." Alekto says, butting in. He always keeps us updated with the council news.
"Why would he think that? As far as Blackburn's concerned, he's the most qualified guy for the job, right?" Hunter asks.
"Qualifications don't cure paranoia. Even if he is qualified, he still thinks that some charmer who wants to take over his town could do it in a heartbeat.” Alekto says.
"Could one?" I say, curious.
"Of course not! He's shown his competence, there's no one that could replace him. Except Cassius obviously, but there's no way that he's got the guts to take power"
"Of course."

"Why do we even care about this? It doesn't matter to us. The councilmembers don't care if we live or die." Hunter says, sighing.
"Well, one of them does" Alekto mutters under his breath, looking down.
"No one give a fuck about your boyfriend, Alekto" I say.
"Damn, don't be mean"
"You know who Hunter was talking about. The High councilmembers"
"Right. So Tobias Alexanderson?"
"Of course. He doesn't care about us. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even care about his own son" Hunter says.
"That's a surprisingly low bar." I say.

“Don’t start. I came from nothing, turned up nearly dead in the town square, and do you know how many people took pity on me? One! Just Alya! And do you want to place a bet on how many people would come and help you if you were in my shoes that day?”
“I don’t-”
“The. Whole. Town! The whole fucking town would come to your rescue, waiting on you hand and fucking foot until they made sure that precious little Cassius was all better, instead of leaving him to starve on the street until one single person comes along by chance and takes pity on him!”
“It’s not my fault who my father is!”
“But it is your fault that you chose to play into the idea of him being some kind of paragon of virtue and not even questioning for a second that you might not be the only person in the world?”
“I never thought that!”

And maybe seven years ago, that war ending would've been enough for me. Some genetic full circle. The war that tore my family apart ending at the hands of the person that tore my friends apart. There's a nice symmetry to that, after all. [Redacted] would appreciate that.
"It doesn't matter if I believe her." A crease forms between her eyebrows. "It's not worth the cost."
"It never is, is it?"
