A GUIDE TO FINDING YOUR OWN STYLE: PART II. FRENCH GIRLY ୨୧ ׅ ۫ 𖹭

French Girly (フレンチガーリー) is a substyle of Japanese girly kei fashion as well as an aesthetic created by and popular among young women in Japan. It is an elegant and feminine aesthetic that utilizes imagery associated with antique French Haussmann architecture and material culture, combined with whimsical and kawaii details. This type of fashion is largely inspired by luxury brands and prep, but takes on an extremely girly look that is fairly unique to Japanese culture. French Girly is also based on the clothing of various small brands which gained notoriety for creating and catering to this aesthetic, largely by the brand Épine.

The aesthetic closely follows parisian fashion while also incorporating Japanese influence. The fashion style itself focuses on elegance and femininity, including colors like tan, black, white, gold, and pink. Outfits can consist of:

@saint-tory I saw you posted about what Sam and Tory should have worn to prom and it looks like you deleted the post but unfortunately fashion history is a special interest of mine so I’m going to subject you to this anyway

Tory feels pretty easy honestly. The theme for their prom was old hollywood; Tory seems to go with an early 1940s inspired look with the silhouette, her hair, and makeup; however. I think she would also look very good in something 70s inspired, and that’s a look Peyton List seems to enjoy as well. I think putting her in a flared jumpsuit that’s just on the glamorous side of flashy really works for her.

Something like this, maybe:

Sam is a little tougher. In the show, they put her in what is literally Audrey Hepburn’s dress in Sabrina— Except it’s Marilyn Monroe Gentlemen Prefer Blondes hot pink.

Which is a weird choice bc a. The result doesn’t look like either Audrey or Marilyn’s style b. It’s not Sam’s vibe anyway

If they wanted to keep her in something Dior’s brand new look/Audrey/Givenchy inspired, they shouldn’t have tried to remix it on their own into something that didn’t make sense.

I also think it’s worth considering what Sam would think of when she hears “Old Hollywood.” Who does she identify with that? Would it be Marilyn or Audrey? Or would it be Heidi Lamar, Katharine Hepburn, maybe Lana Turner? Or maybe she thinks of classic Italian stars; I wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel had an old pin up of Sophia Loren or Claudia Cardinale in a box somewhere.

Considering that, I think there are a few directions to go in. Rather than drawing inspiration from the 40s/70s like with Tory, I think it makes more sense to draw on the 30s/60s/90s with Sam.

I’ve seen some people say she should have called back to Daniel’s blue prom outfit, which is itself 60s inspired. If that’s the direction she was going in she might go for something like this:

If we wanted to stick with something sixties but more individual, I think she would look great in something short and mod-inspired. 60s mod dresses have a real boyish charm that I think would work well for her.

(She would also look very cute with 60s makeup/hair)

Another option would be putting her in something 30s inspired, which would also allow her to lean into a less cutesy look. Something slinky and long and backless, with long brushed out Veronica Lake style curls.

As for what Sam would wear to 80s night at the roller rink, they originally put her in the Pretty In Pink dress, but it’s very identifiably not her vibe.

I would LOVE to have seen her in a plaid skirt suit since those were popular at the time. Maybe it’s even an outfit Lucille wore in the 80s, and Sam asks to borrow it.

It also would’ve steered the vibe closer to Heathers than Pretty In Pink.

My Beauty is Transactional.

I’m glad I realized at 17, beauty shouldn’t be free and men are trying to get what they can get if you let them. It’s only fair to capitalize on it! Not even fair, it’s commonplace.

I considered what my target would be giving up in exchange for my beauty. I’ve lived through and seen how settling for less runs you ragged, while the man still looks 10-20 years her junior.

But contrastly, I remember being in public school going on field trips passing malls, nice restaurants and seeing Porsches, Range Rovers, new Escalades and higher end Mercedes models, driving leisurely, getting off at those exits and the women drivers in athleisure outfits, all before 11AM.

I dreamt of being those women out in droves while the working class are rushing to work and frustrated to be in traffic.

In my opinion, beauty isn’t enough of a factor to give anyone money for, since beautiful people can be seen for free on the internet and nudes are cheap/free.

The experience with beauty (being lucky enough for a beautiful person to look their way and talk to them “WOW!!!”, so in exchange they cover their expense(s) since the woman had her beauty, intelligence and personality as a factor, I GOTTA stop smiling w/ teeth for free) is enough a factor to make me wake up at 5:30-5:45am just for makeup.

I go crazy with my makeup!! The experience I give through my beauty is enough to motivate me to be healthy through my self care and lifestyle. I have cute grl açaí bowls for breakfast as well.

If I couldn’t say “I’m fully provided for by [X]”, “[X] bought me a/an [X] and I’m enjoying it”, “I love money and money loves me back,” or “I love being pampered/my pampered lifestyle,” without feeling silly, who else would believe me? I’d come off as vapid and arrogant, not in good ways either.

I’ve been looked at & got feedback that my haughtiness (from my unshy onlookers) is hot and attractive, because I MEAN it. To the broke boys, I look hot & confident, but not for you. To the independently rich ones, waiting to pounce. I really enjoy gathering feedback this way, since people I see on campus may/may not see you again usually aren’t afraid to let you know what they think in public.

The more transactional I become, the more I can afford to be cheaper, surprisingly because my purchasing power (with another’s line of credit) gives me the power to experiment. I’ll buy real products, but not with my plastic.

These looks Gussie gives in these two and a half hours...sublime. I read you have 10 costume changes and five wigs. Do you have a favorite?

I love to lean into my ridiculous side and my fabulous side, so I have to say I like the sequin dress with the feather trim and the asymmetrical wig. I just find that outfit to be so ridiculous. Then, of course, in my opening in Act Two, I feel very like, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Diana Ross, and Beyoncé. Opening act two is very Beyonce ending her Renaissance tour. Jonathan [Groff] and I are very obsessed with Beyoncé, and he’s like, ‘You’re Beyoncé in this dress!’

This ensemble cast is kind of a dream team, really. I mean, you’re working alongside Harry Potter. What’s been the most fulfilling part of sharing a stage with everyone?

This is one of the most loving and bonded casts that I’ve ever gotten to work with. I think the casting was impeccable. I also think the best glue is that we have is Jonathan Groff at the center of everything. He’s such a warm, loving heart that it just makes you kind of gooey. He wears his emotions so on his sleeve and he’s so open-hearted that it inspires me to be more open-hearted, to be more receptive, and to listen more. That’s something that always comes from the very, very top and I think he’s a great example of that—just helping to bond us together in that way. Getting to create with them has been really one of my favorite things I’ve ever done in my career.

This is a very interesting question!

I don't have a particular outfit that immediately comes to mind, but I do have several outfit/fashion ideas that I would love to see her in.

Iconic Movie Outfits (particularly pink!)

"On Wednesdays, we wear pink!"

I like to watch movies and sometimes I'd look at their outfits. I definitely think she looks good in pink if you are drawing her with blue hair.

Mean Girls

The quote was from Mean Girls. Neon was first introduced in the late 90s, so it makes sense for her to be a late 90s or early 2000s teenager.

Legally Blonde

This movie gave so much pink outfits, it's so cute! Here's my favourite:

Material Girl by Madonna

Not a movie, but this pink outfit was inspired by Marilyn Monroe's pink dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

I think the song "Material Girl" fits Neon a lot.

Scarface

It's not pink, but Elvira reminds me a bit of Neon. She's also the wife of a mafia boss.

This teal dress may clash with her blue hair, but I think she'll look good in it if you decide to draw her with her 1999 pink hair.

1920s Fashion (The Roaring 20s)

The Great Gatsby

When it comes to visualizing Neon in another time period, I'd say the 1920s (Roaring 20s) suit her a lot. There's so much glamour in the outfits that I'd love to see her in those!

Ever since I watched the movie The Great Gatsby, I found the fashion in this time period particularly interesting. If you see my tumblr Kuraneon banner (see my profile), it is actually a scene from that movie and I commissioned an artist to draw her because I wanted to see Neon in that outfit.

I already commissioned someone to draw her in the middle outfit, but I think she'd look great on the other two.

I think the flapper dresses were particularly interesting. And also the feathered headpiece.

You know how Neon sometimes would wear hair up with a clothed hairband? I think the 1920s headpiece can replace the hairband that she normally wears.

Denim dungaree dress

This one is suggested from @anotherworldash

Denim dungaree dress seem quite common in my country too.

Black Dress with Gold Chains

I was shopping once at a store and found a black dress with chains. I like Kurapika and it reminded me of his chains so that caught my eye. Then I found a satin dress with gold chain pearl straps and I bought it.

I don’t really know if you like Kurapika and Neon together, but the idea of Neon wearing a black dress with gold chains is somewhat appealing to me. This dress in particular is what I’d like to see her in (minus the headpiece).

This dress is Chanel worn by Lily Rose in the Met Gala. It was inspired by one of the outfits worn in Sailor Moon.

Accessories: Questionable and High-end Fashion

High- End Designer bags

This one is less of outfits and more of the accessories she wear. Since she likes shopping, I think she's the type of girl that would wear designer handbags and accessories.

Brands could something be like Prada, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Hermes etc. Not sure if we can draw branded goods though due to copyright or something... Perhaps a fictional spin-off? Sometimes I will make up a fictional designer brand in my fanfics.

Taxidermised jewellery

While writing Neon, I came across a taxidermy shop. The taxidermy shop sells taxidermised butterfly and cat bones earrings/necklaces (of course, within legal boundaries). If I remember correctly, they only source animals that are already dead (they cannot kill animals for the sake of taxidermising them).

This is an example of necklaces made from dead butterflies. There is also a canine bones earring here.

Since her hobby is collecting dead body parts, I think she'll like having to wear accessories that are made from dead animals or human parts.

This was already done in the HxH mobage cards where Neon is seen wearing the Scarlet Eye as a hair tie. See the pic here.

There was actually a drawing I saw once of her wearing the Scarlet Eye as a choker. I think for this one you can go really creative. I'm thinking of a combination of the 1920s headpiece with the Scarlet Eyes.

Questionable Fashion

I always believed Neon is the personification of the wealthy and materialistic people's lack of empathy towards dead people. It didn't matter to Neon how her dead body parts collection was obtained, she only wants to have them.

I've always thought about a celebrity AU where Neon is criticised for being wasteful and unsympathetic because she likes to buy multiple mink fur coats.

I just adore the idea of Ellis wearing an outfit inspired by the Jackie Kennedy Pink suit! It literally fits her so much! The gentlemen who prefer blondes dress for Chizuko fits her so much as well! I definitely tried to look for outfits that were worn by actresses during the 1930s to 60s since that's where Victoria's idol aesthetic is(Since Lana Del Rey's aesthetic is often described as "vintage" or "old Hollywood")

Fun fact, actually: I was originally going to give Juvia the iconic pink outfit from the sitcom "I dream of Jeannie" from 1965, but after looking up some looks from Audrey Hepburn, I chose the regency styled dress from "War and peace" instead ^^

I know Carol also does a bit of fanservice, but I also believe she and Mayuu would want to be comfortable without wearing anything too revealing 🤔 So I chose Mary Tyler Moore from the Dick Van Dyke show and Elizabeth Montgomery from 'Bewitched'

I was watching the original Addams family sitcom since it took place in 1964. And when I saw Carolyn Jones and John Astin in their respective costumes? I knew I had to give Victoria and Aguri those kind of outfits.

The boys who weren't Aguri were a bit of a challenge, since most men in the 30s to 60s would mostly wear suits. Especially in sitcoms like Bewitched. So unfortunately I had to give them suits, but were similar to the patterning and sewing techniques in the 60s.

Another fun fact: I was planning to make Carol and/or Ellis wear a replica of Yvonne De Carlo's costume when she was playing Lily Munster in 'The Munsters'.

When the Angels left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb—loved this so much! I read it in one sitting

The Raven Cycle & Dreamer Trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater—read these as fast as I could get them from the library & then read tons of posts about them. I’m a little sad I didn’t read them when they were coming out, it might have been fun to be in the fandom

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik—kind of bored me. I don’t like battle scenes 😔

Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones—I forgot how much I love her books. This one was not my favorite but it was still good

Reread In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan and liked it much better than the first time. I actually started at the end and kind of read backwards scene by scene

Reread The Blue Castle for tumblr book club—still one of my favorite books & I loved seeing all the posts

Finished Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation—lived up to my expectations & I don’t know what people were on thinking the extra stories were problematic

System Collapse by Martha Wells as soon as it comes in from the library

The Phantom of the Opera

The Code of the Woosters—it’s in my backpack right now. I’ll probably read it on the train

Rewatched Annie 1982–I love Carol Burnett so much

Started watching My Fair Lady in the car on the way to thanksgiving & haven’t finished it. Mr Higgins is so infuriating!—I read the play when I was a teenager & it’s so interesting to notice all the lines I remember

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes—it was fine. “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” was pretty good. Jane Russell is so hot

Marilyn Monroe by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara. Illustrated by Ana Albero

Age Recommendation: Early Primary Topic/ Theme: Stardom, Feminism, biographic. Setting: Primarily Hollywood Series: Little People, Big Dreams

Rating: 3/5

Before I start this review proper. Contrary to the illustration section of this review I did enjoy this book. I just had some reservations about the details.

Marilyn Monroe is one of the Internet's most popular feminists (and one of tumblr's ace icons long story). The story itself manages to handle Marilyn Monroe's life. Hers was a bit of a sad and lonely life, okay more than a bit when you look at the details. This does largely ignore her most turbulent relationship completely, I am thankful for that. What is included is a sketch it is beautiful and it is frank about what it does include. Covering the professional aspects of her life from modelling to the hair dye to the acting agency and advocating. I can't find fault with Sánchez Vegara's text, I rarely ever can. She knows just where the line is. How much young audiences can take.

Unsurprisingly the book does feature the infamous scene from The Seven Year Itch (the filming story behind that is a story and a half). It is drawn in a cute way. I guess it had to be included as I said it is infamous and that dress is stunning in its simplicity. The illustrations of Maf, the poodle that appears frequently throughout the book is done well and he is adorable (Maf has a pretty interesting story himself, including his name). There is an admirable amount of multiculturalism used, particularly given the situations Norma Jeane Baker was raised in. The end pages were a surprise to be, stars. Like stars in the night sky. I like them. They suit her.

All that said if you are going to illustrate a book about a woman whose every move was watched, whose outfits are so well documented you better get your details at least close. Ana Albero does not. Is it nitpicking? Perhaps. But Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, many people will pick that dress quickly, having that colour needs to be right.
