things aren't the way you planned coming home with your newborn, but you have eddie there to lean on when things get hard (and an unlimited supply of 'munson-style' hugs). requested here. infatuated dad!eddie x mom!reader, 3k.
cw post partum recovery, reader is suffering from some symptoms of post partum depression
˗ˋˏ ♡ ˎˊ˗
"You're sure you can manage?" Wayne asks, his voice buzzing down the line.
Eddie peers out of the kitchen into the living room quietly. You're sitting on the sofa in a shape that can't be comfortable considering your recent stitches, the baby on your thighs where you've brought them together, your hands delicately posed on either side of his head.
"I think so," Eddie says, answering Wayne's questions with honesty. "She's feeling a little better today."
"It's hard, Eds. You take care of her and call me if you need help, okay? I'm proud of you. Both of you."
It catches Eddie off guard for a moment. He's done enough crying lately, clearing his throat to say, "Thanks, Wayne. Call me tomorrow."
"You call me, I don't wanna wake anyone if you're sleeping."
They say their goodbyes. Eddie leans against the kitchen doorway to spy on you and the baby. Babies cry more than he ever could've imagined despite the warnings, but it's quiet, too. There are moments of peacefulness like this one breaking apart the chaos.
You're whispering something. Eddie stands very still, wishing the dishwasher would magically silence itself. He strains to hear you.
"I love you," you say. "Sorry I'm tired, honey. I promise I'll be better. You're so beautiful."
Eddie bites his cheeks, wondering if his family (his family!) aim to make him cry and little else tonight. He gives himself a look in the mirror magnet on the fridge framed by a We Love Michigan border, rainbows and cute elk surrounding something less pretty. His hair is frizzy but that's nothing new, greasy at the top and dry at the bottom. He scrapes it back into a scrappy bun and wipes the oil from his face with his sleeves. He's in dire need of a shower.
Resigned, he steps out of the kitchen, new socks slippery on old linoleum before finding stability on the crush of carpet in need of a vacuuming in the living room. You look up and bless him with a smile.
You've had a bad case of the baby blues, though the midwife assured him that was normal, and not to worry unless it continued past the first few weeks.
Well, Eddie will worry. Any depression you experience breaks his heart, no matter the cause, and no matter how temporary it may be. Just 'cos a cut might heal doesn't mean it didn't hurt when you got it.
"How do you feel?" he asks cautiously.
You make a face that he knows precedes a lie. "Don't worry about me."
He sits on the arm to look down at the baby —his baby, his son— in your hold, your face moving immediately to rest on his thigh.
"I'm okay, teddy," you say.
"How about you?" he asks the baby, taking his hand gently.
The baby doesn't open his eyes nor answer the question, well and truly asleep.
"Do you think Charlie was the right name?" you ask, stroking his small face lightly.
"If we hate it, we can just call him Wayne."
Eddie's out of this world lucky that you'd liked the name and loved him enough to name the baby after his uncle. Charlie Wayne Munson, born six pounds and two ounces, the smallest baby they saw all week in Hawkins General.
"He looks more like a Wayne than a Charlie," you say, rubbing your cheek into Eddie's sweatpants.
"He's so fucking beautiful," Eddie says, getting his hand behind your shoulders. He gives your back a loving rub, up and down the whole stiff length of it. "Would you relax? Or tell me what's wrong? Please?"
"Nothing's wrong… Look how perfect he is, I'd be a freak to act like something was wrong," you say, the exhale of your words warming his leg.
Eddie rubs his hand up with a tad more roughness until the cinch between your shoulders has flattened.
"You're having a biological reaction," Eddie says, leaning down to press his lips to the top of your head. "Don't feel bad about feeling bad, sweetheart. This is a physical thing, that's all it is. You're not a freak for feeling wobbly."
You relax even more, pad of your thumb swiping Charlie's smooth cheek.
"Want me to make you feel better?" he asks.
"How?"
"I'm not sure yet. I was thinking we'd make a list. Starting with a hug, quickly followed by something amazing to eat before Wayne wakes up."
"Charlie," you correct with a small laugh.
"Is there a nickname for Charlie?" Eddie asks. "What are we gonna call him? Lee?"
"We'll think of something," you promise.
Eddie isn't worried about it. He figures there's at least five years of nickname time to get one that sticks. For now, he has a list to make and things to do, and the first is making sure you're as well as you can be. He starts with the hug, pulling what you want for dinner from you one soft kiss to your temple at a time. Chicken pot pie? Ramen noodles with a fried egg on top? Sesame chicken? Triple cheeseburgers?
You can't decide. Eddie chooses breakfast for dinner. It won't take long —he can fry the sausage, eggs, turkey bacon and toast in one pan.
He keeps the door open to watch you, though nothing is actively wrong. You're deflated now rather than tense, petting and fawning over the baby as much as you can without waking him up.
"Just as handsome as your dad," you say.
It's a lovely sentiment but Charlie does not approve. He blinks awake, signified by your saccharine, "Hi, baby boy," followed by ten seconds of awe-filled cooing. Eddie's frying some bread in the pan but dinner can wait, he wants to see the baby with his eyes open again.
By the time Eddie reaches the couch, he's crying.
You move him carefully into a rock-a-bye hold and shush him. "It's alright," you say.
"He sounds like you."
"What?" you ask between shushes, hand tapping a slow and gentle rhythm into Charlie's swaddle.
"He sounds like you when he cries," Eddie insists.
Not your pained screams a few days ago nor your heart wrenching tears when you're feeling at your worst, but your hormonal sobbing. Like when you saw the commercial about the new 'shoplifters exposed' program on CBS that featured an old lady who stole a tangerine from the grocery store and got arrested despite her having alzheimers. She didn't mean to, Eddie, why would they make her cry like that? In fairness, it was a very upsetting commercial, but you cried for four hours, and for days afterward your eyes would well with tears and he'd know exactly what you were thinking of.
"When you're on your period," he explains. "When you know you wouldn't usually cry."
"You think so?" you ask.
"I think the solution is the same, too."
You nod your agreement. "He's hungry."
You and Eddie feed the baby with varying levels of success. Charlie doesn't wanna latch even though it's a bottle teat, causing some confusion —is he not hungry? Is he cold? No, sweetheart, he's not cold, he's got two blankets and the thermostat's at 68 Fahrenheit. Maybe he needs a new diaper? You check. His diaper's clean.
You're looking more and more defeated by the second. Eddie sits beside you to give your knee a reassuring squeeze. Babies are hard to look after, but he knows you'll both grow into it. You're exhausted from nine long months and a turbulent half day stint of pushing and crying and turning the bones in his hands into powder, your hormones are going crazy, and you're having a tough time. This won't be your forever feeling (though if it were to last, Eddie would stay at your side through that, too, that's not a question).
"You know what else works when you're not feeling good?" Eddie asks, offering his arms. He isn't some muscled herculean shape, but when you hand Charlie over, his arms look strong. Capable. Holding Charlie feels just as perfect as holding you. "A Munson-style cuddle," he finishes, trying to speak to his wailing son in that same bubbly parentese you've started talking in.
Eddie did a lot of talking to your bump while you were pregnant, but he was usually just trying to make you laugh. There were times where he'd lay with his nose against your hip and his arm under the bump, wondering about moments like this. What was the baby going to look like? What colour would his eyes be? What will it feel like to hold the baby in his arms?
Charlie feels lighter than Eddie first prophesied. Small. He has eyes like yours rather than eyes like his and he couldn't love it more.
Eddie takes the bottle when you offer it and sandwiches the baby to his chest. He doesn't want to condescend you, doesn't want to shoo you off, but Charlie's crying around the bottle and you look veritably miserably.
"Do you wanna go and make sure the food isn't on the turn?" he asks. When he realised the baby wasn't going to go down easy again he put your plates on a baking sheet and put the oven on low to keep it warm.
You hesitate. "Are you okay?"
"I don't know. I think so, sweetheart. We're barely a room away, alright?"
He's called you sweetheart more since the birth of your son than ever before, which is insane; Eddie's called you sweetheart likely twice a day since the day you met. That's a whole lot of sweethearts.
With the baby's changing mood comes a change in the weather. Eddie pats his little back, a quiet thump thump thump, while rain lashes the closed windows. The baby finally decides he's hungry, and the mood turns from frenetic to ambient almost immediately.
"You make sure you eat if you're hungry!" Eddie calls to you.
"Are you sure?"
"I think…" He drifts off, distracted by Charlie's long eyelashes, the way they skim under his eyes and the tiny noises he makes as he suckles. "Aw, baby," he murmurs, "good job. I knew you were hungry. You sounded just like your mom." He can't help grinning. Eddie is really talking to his kid right now, his real life baby. "You made her super emotional, but you're her whole world now. You're mine, too, obviously, but I'm cooler than this." He sighs. "No. I'm not. This is the coolest thing ever."
"What do you think?" you ask softly.
Eddie looks up. You're standing at the door, staring at them like they're made of sparkling diamond, every inch precious.
"Right. I think that we're gonna have to start eating when we can. Wayne never had a baby, but he said I was bad enough as a teenager, and Steve said he's lucky if he gets to eat a hot meal some days."
"Steve does have three," you say, frowning. "We really can't eat together anymore?"
You ask like you're less bothered than you are. Like a gimmicky Oh, man. Eddie knows it hides a real worry, and right now he's trying to give you the world on a silver platter, so he dots a little kiss on Charlie's head and says warmly into his skin, "No, that's not true. You're going to be such a good kid, me and mom will be eating together all the time. Isn't that right?"
Eddie looks at you with his head still tilted down. "I wanna eat together, okay? Everything's changing, but dinner doesn't have to. I just wanted you to eat 'cos you left half of your waffles at breakfast."
"I can wait."
"Then let's wait. You wanna come and hold him?"
"No, he's settled. I don't wanna mess it up again."
"You didn't," Eddie says, firm and sweet at once. "Sweetheart, come here. You didn't mess up, okay? I'm serious, come and sit with me."
You hesitate in the way. You're still unsteady on your feet despite the few days you've had to recuperate. Though your hair is cleaner than his it certainly isn't clean, nor are the clothes you've pulled on. Eddie read up and asked around on what would be comfiest for you, debating nightgowns and silk pyjamas at length, but all you've wanted to wear is a hoodie you've had since you were a teenager and a pair of sweatpants with fraying cuffs. He loves it —you look like an adorable dork.
Your stomach visibly churns. Eddie thinks you might chuck up, is already pulling the baby to his chest to place in the bassinet when you take a short, quiet gasp for air.
"Sorry, I don't know why I feel so on and off. I know it's just hormones. I promise I feel happy– I feel happy–" You gesture an open palm toward him. "He's gorgeous, Eds, he's everything I wanted and so much more, I just– I just feel like crying and I don't know why," you confess, blinking to suppress tears, shifting your weight uncomfortably from foot to foot.
Eddie detests seeing you this uneasy, and he swoops in to correct it.
"Come here," he says again, no hands free to hold out to you. He hopes his voice is inviting enough.
You shrink into yourself. "I'm being weird."
"I like when you're weird. I kind of love it. I don't think we'd be in the mess if I didn't love it."
"It's a mess?" you ask.
"It's perfect."
You finally smile, creeping around the bassinet and the needlessly baby proofed coffee table to sit on the edge of the couch with him. Charlie makes a sound in the back of his throat.
"Hear that? He knows you're here," Eddie murmurs, making room for you hopefully.
You sidle up to his thigh and lean on his arm, careful not to knock his elbow. You watch Charlie drink his bottle for as long as there's milk left, two ounces knocked back like it's nothing.
Eddie eases the teat from Charlie's lips carefully. With care but a clumsy imprecise manoeuvre, he lays Charlie down in the bassinet. He has a lot of hair for such a small baby, enough to stroke back from his forehead, soft under Eddie's fingertips.
"He's really, really beautiful," Eddie says quietly.
"I know," you say, an anxious hand on your cheek. "I can't believe something as good as him could come from someone like me."
Eddie stands between your legs, resting a loving hand at the slope of your shoulder. "Why would you ever think something like that?" he asks, his voice as soft as it's ever been, but with a smile in case you don't want to talk about it any more.
"He's… I'm just not…"
Eddie gives you time. You've needed it ever since you went into labour, time to piece things together.
"I really thought I was ready," you say, looking up at him with a pinch between your eyebrows.
He brings his hand up to cup your face. You don't lean into it. "Alright, I'm going to talk for a little while, 'n' I know you won't agree with everything I'm saying but I need you to know that this is how I really feel, yeah? Buckle up." Eddie bends down, unafraid of embarrassing himself because it's you. "I know you think these feelings are your fault… that this is some failing, like you're–" He drops his voice to a whisper, "Like you're being a bad mom already, but it's not the truth."
You startle at being read so easily. "Eds," you mumble.
"We knew this might be how you felt afterward, the midwife talked and talked about baby blues and you said–"
"I said I couldn't understand how I'd ever feel sad once he was born," you say, looking at his neck rather than his face.
"And that's fine, you know? You're not a bad person for thinking it would be perfect and then changing your mind."
"But he is perfect," you say.
Eddie rubs your cheek. "He's perfect, but this is hard. Being a new mom with your stitches and your aching tummy and all the gross fluids–"
You laugh through a groan, pressing your eye into his hand.
He leaps to keep it going. "This isn't how you expected to feel, but that's okay. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Cry if you feel like crying and don't feel fucking guilty about it, this sucks. You had to do the world's most tumultuous campaign for the last nine months and suddenly you're standing at the start of a new one that takes up, like, a gazillion pages with half health and an equally useless companion."
Your lips press into a thin line, but your eyes are soft and bright despite their obvious fatigue. You bracelet his wrist with your fingers and push his hand further into your cheek.
"My dork," you murmur.
"You understand it, don't you? Makes you an even bigger dork."
You nudge your nose into his palm. "I understand. Thank you, honey."
Eddie's not done. "You said you don't know how something good like him could come from someone like you? I don't think bad was a possibility."
Your second thank you is better. The first wasn't inauthentic, but this one sounds as though you genuinely believe him. Eddie bows down into a crouch to wrap his arms around you, the majority of his weight on your shoulders and avoiding your sore lower region, and the entirety of his love pressed to your cheek, a long, mindless kiss.
"I love you," you say.
Eddie tucks his head against yours, ignoring his protesting knees. "I love you, too."
Your food turns to dry mulch by the time you remember it in the oven. You're too distracted by Eddie's hug, his offering for a shoulder massage, and the subsequent second hug that ensues, your back to his chest, dozing in the sanctuary of his arms. Munson-style cuddles are his expertise.

What are you procrastinating?
Steve and Tony techy spy au?
*waves hand at... everything* Eh.
Anyway I'm feeling some okayish-dad Howard and stupid boys. But when am I not feeling stupid boys 🤔
Steve isn't about this whole... high-tech stuff. He's been doing this spy thing for years without even a smart phone. He doesn't want all these newfangled gadgets that take up space that could be filled with extra bullets instead. Sure, the key-reader had come in handy, but he also could have just kicked the door open in the same amount of time. He tries, though. He knows the world is getting more reliant on tech, and while his flip phone and motorcycle are enough for him, espionage is advancing to heights he never could have imagined. Plus, it genuinely helps that he always looks a little confused when he does anything tech-related. Most people think he's too stupid to know how to upload viruses and key loggers. He's gotten a lot more on board with it now that Tony is working in the labs, though. Tony is bright, and he always smiles wide as he explains exactly what his inventions do. So maybe Steve leans into being a neanderthal a little bit, just so he can get some extra attention as Tony makes absolutely sure he understands how everything works. His life depends on it, sometimes! He needs to know this stuff! And sometimes Tony leans in, one long line of heat against the side of Steve's body, and Steve is grateful he actually knew what Tony was talking about because all he could think at the time was 'Tony Tony Tony Tony' and he took in nothing.
Tony is, unfortunately, untouchable. Peggy is the head of the organization, but there are several others under her who wield almost as much power. Howard Stark is one of them. Steve had thought he and Howard had a pretty good rapport. They would get drinks after work, sometimes even eat lunch in the commissary together. Howard liked the work Steve did, and he also had a soft spot for older technology like Steve. They got along. But then one day, while they were taking their trays to one of the tables to sit at for lunch, someone said, "Have you seen the ass on that new guy in tech? Bet he's tight as a--" and Howard wordlessly slammed his tray into the guy's head with such force that it bounced off the table. "My son's ass is as tight as what?" Howard had asked mildly, as if he had not cracked his tray in half, and the surrounding three tables had scattered. Steve had wanted to run, too, but he'd pretended he understood Howard's reaction and how obviously he'd made the right decision. No one should be talked about like that, least of all a sub-director's son. After lunch, Steve had immediately gone to a payphone three blocks away and left all his friends messages to please god please don't tease him about how much he's talked about how sexy Tony is at work Howard will murder him Agent Malloy got a concussion please.
It's not like Steve is special, anyway. Tony is enthused about one thing only: Technology. Part of the reason he got the job was because Howard was tired of being pestered to show things to Peggy for him. Howard had cleared a path for him to force his way into Peggy's office and show off his stuff firsthand and that had been that. (Rumors said that Peggy was still aghast that Howard would allow Tony into a situation where he might be shot by his godmother, but both Howard and Tony showed a distinct lack of care for their safety, so. Maybe there was truth to the rumors.) So being an idiot about technology is the only way that Steve can get his attention. He think it's probably not the best way to endear Tony to him. Tony probably wants someone he thinks can keep up with him, anyway. Steve portrays himself as sort of a dinosaur when it comes to tech. Surely someone who didn't "need" to have things explained to him in very small words. Besides, active field agents were discouraged from serious relationships. It's always possible that they might not come back, or that their significant other would could be used against them. He wouldn't be Tony's first choice, and Tony probably had the good sense not to get involved with an active field agent. (Or if he didn't, Howard had probably scared the majority of them off. Agent Malloy had been the first creep he'd used his hands on. He hadn't been the last.)
Tony is absolutely, embarrassingly, and obviously in love with Steve. He thinks Steve is so sweet. He doesn't understand a lot of high-tech stuff, but he's so earnest when he asks questions, Tony doesn't even mind taking time from other projects to give him explanations. He wants to make sure Steve knows as much as possible so that he's less likely to get hurt. Steve has a sweet smile and he's literally heard him say 'aw, shucks.' He kinda wants to take Steve to bed and make him learn new swears. Steve's basically the only one Howard has good things to say about, too. 'He's a polite young man who would never gossip about how good his boyfriend is in bed,' he'd said. Tony... isn't actually sure why his dad felt the need to tell him that? But he appreciates it. He had his time as the college bicycle and while he's maybe not ready to settle down, he's ready to test the waters, date around. Maybe with Steve, if he could ever get Steve to catch a clue. Every time he hints at a date, Steve starts babbling frantically about someone named Agent Malloy? Tony only met him once. He thinks the guy's on medical leave, maybe. Maybe he's more Steve's type, Tony thinks in disappointment.
"...So you were just making fun of me," Tony says, hurt, after Steve has cracked the code on the digital cuffs he'd been bound with. "When you asked me how things worked." "I just liked listening to you talk," Steve admits, embarrassed, and doesn't meet his eyes. "I'd listen to you read the dictionary. You at least seemed to like talking about tech." "Aw," Tony begins, and then grabs Steve's arm and yanks him down with a scream. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" "What?! What!?" Steve shouts, but then Tony is gathering him to his chest and holding a taser threateningly. "Who are you threatening I can't see Tony oh my god." Howard adjusts his grip on the wooden beam he'd found to use as a weapon. "If I have to watch this comedy of errors for one more minute, I will beat Steve to death." "What are you fucking talking about?!" Tony splutters, at the same time Steve wails, "NO I SAW WHAT YOU DID TO AGENT MALLOY WHEN HE WAS TALKING ABOUT TONY'S ASS!" In the end, Tony has to use a prototype bondage device to disarm and bind his dad so he doesn't kill Steve accidentally club them both and Steve is so in love with him. He's so smart and beautiful and kind. "He is not kind," Howard barks from where Steve is carrying him like he weighs nothing. "Look away Tony. I don't want you getting ideas about his biceps." "It's too late. I had them the first time I saw him training newbies in the gym," Tony retorts, and Steve has to fumble around with Howard as he snarls and gnashes his teeth.

20 Kinnporsche Rewatch Episode 5 Thoughts
Regret Regret Regret. Kinn is so tense and upset about what he did last night, which he should be! Should have let Arm and Pete take care of Porsche, buddy. But Porsche is just dead-eyed and fucking tired. Kinn says that nothing happened and Kinn got to him first, but you know Porsche’s body is telling him a different story. How much does Porsche remember in that moment, How much does he believe Kinn in this moment? Either he’s lying, or it was Kinn that did it to him. and that’s a lot to process when you just woke up.
Kim being a nosy shit is great. and Korn sees right through him. He doesn’t trust Kim as far as he could throw him. but he learned it from watching you, dad! he learned it from watching you!!! Korn knows his grip on Kim is tenuous At Best, so it’s time to really put the squeeze on Kinn.
Genuinely am baffled at Korn’s motivations for all this. like, manipulating and abusing your kids is...you know, a bad thing but it’s one thing. but he wants Porsche working for them, under his thumb. He wants Nampheung’s son back in the fold and part of the family. How does punishing Porsche for getting drugged and making Kinn feel bad for loving Porsche accomplish any of that???
We absolutely need more Tankhun and Kim interactions. they both know way more than Kinn does. Tankhun is a messy bitch and is living for the drama of Kim spying on their dad and finding info. he’s so proud of his babiest brother. We need Tankhun and Kim to Unionize and overthrow their father. they could do it. they have the power.
Are You Fucking Dumb, Bro? my beloved. cracks me up every time. Best thing Ken ever did. ❤️
oh Porsche is MAD about getting punished. honestly his little bathroom breakdown is sooo justified. thank god for Pete, but them having two Very Different conversations is sadly funny.
Arm looks to be the Designataed Sober Bodyguard after the Stripping Incident. Disappointing, but probably a wise choice.
god Porsche is SO SAD this entire episode it kills me.
Aaaaaand here comes Vegas, smelling the blood in the water. honestly the difference between 3 minutes ago and vegas rolling up with the sick motorcycle is night and day. the life returns to Porsche’s eyes because of that bike.  He and Vegas really could be bros, if it wasn’t for....everything. Porsche has so much fun with Vegas here. No thoughts, just a nice nightime bike ride on a sweet motorcycle with a handsome boy who’s been nothing but nice to you, really, and also it will piss off your boss. Win Win. (Vegas’s little stumble getting off the bike...I see you, sir. playing your game. 👀)
Kinn realizing he drove Porsche ~into Vegas’s arms~ is hilarious. Allow my inner wrestling fan to come out, for just a moment: You 👏 De- 👏Serve👏 It👏
“At least the minor family’s never hurt me!” “I’ve hurt you?” “.......Haven’t you?” god Porsche’s little eyebrow raise. The audacity Kinn has to pretend he didn’t hurt Porsche! Kinn, getting smacked in the face with the fact that Porsche does actually remember. Kinn not knowing how to respond or apologize and just digging his grave deeper. this scene is so good.
i do really like Korn’s pool. it’s a fucking rich people thing, but one that i would actually like to have.
Pete having to stand there, pantsless ass out, and give relationship counseling to his boss. what a nightmare for him. i would die.  but i love his little smile after Kinn leaves, like Yeah! Nailed it! I gave Good Advice (tm)
Kinn getting absolutely roasted by Porsche’s friends and swallowing it down is so funny.  And you can tell that it physically pains Kinn to apologize out loud.
Porsche is actually decent at his job! Even drunk and sad and in the middle of a verbal fight with his boss, he still clocked the intruders before Kinn did.
now i doubt that any competent kidnappers would let Kinn keep a phone on him, which means that Korn had to have GPS chipped his sons at some point like they were dogs that could  get lost. probably after Tankhun’s kidnapping and recovery.
When Porsche and Kinn hear the gunshots Kinn looks so smug like yeah, the rescue team is here and you are going to die. chan is going to shoot you right in the head.
speaking of which, Daddy Chan leaning out of the van to shoot the guy cleanly that Big and Ken fumbled is so great. Finally, some good fucking marksmanship.
KinnPorsche being a Battle Couple will never get old. Handcuffed together in the back of a truck, knocking those kidnappers the fuck out. love it for them.
OK in the preview they do say the GPS is from Kinn’s phone which...was really stupid of the kidnappers. i don’t think this was a very serious kidnapping attempt. Pretty sure this was Korn shoving Kinn and Porsche into a Get-Along-Shirt.

your last au has me going through it 😭💔 does nick tell isaiah anything about ziggy? also is isaiah more like his mom or his dad? or both maybe? im sure its heartbreaking either way! ❤️
It has me going through it too (and work has been bonkers so yay, finally able to answer ur ask!)
I think Nick does, in vague terms, but always complimentary. Never a bad word. "I loved your mother and she loved you" "She was brave and bold and smart" and "Your mother would be proud". Isaiah catches on fairly early on that his mom is a) not dead b) his father is still in love with her and b) she wasn't married to his dad and that all that is ~hot gossip~ but he doesn't push it bc he loves his dad and thinks this would be hurtful, but also would be a bit afraid of the answers too. [Town ladies talk, and plenty tired to leverage "the boy needs a mother" into being a stepmom married to the most important man in town but Nick rebuffed them all bc he's still evidently in Love with Ziggy. So they talk shit about her too and Isaiah is a good listener, good at being unnoticed when it suits him].
Nick probably scrounged up photos of Ziggy too, to give to Isaiah, which he keeps on his nightstand. Nick was *truly* bowled over by the love he feels for his child, he's the first Goode man to actually love and care for his son as a person and son and not a Pact necessary inheritance/failsafe. Which while great and motivating and fulfilling, also hammered home how little his dad cared for him as a person and how morally bankrupt he really was. Nick is sweating the Pact because he loves his son and wants to save Isaiah's soul and future and doesn't want him tainted by this. See Satan thought that accepting Isaiah as Ziggy's "sacrifice" to be allowed to leave Sunnyvale meant that it would effectively baby trap Nick into the Pact because the Heir is Right There and he can't leave because of the Pact, it really brought home to Nick that he would do anything to save Isaiah from that fate *and* allowed Ziggy to gear up a return that ends the Pact and does save Isaiah.
I think that Isaiah, like a lot of kids, has both the best and the worst of his parents in him. He's strong and smart and brave. And like them, laser focused and committed. Which is great when it comes to goals, less so when he decides you've wronged him and are getting Revenged. On the surface he does seem a lot like Nick, since that's who raised him, Sunnyvale polite, but he's never been Will or Sheila style. He's quiet and studious and very very observant. That comes from some of Nick's not great traits: despite trying to be better, a lifetime of isolationist secrecy rubs off and Isaiah gets fast that there's a lot Not Being Talked about and all about Nick's extreme idea of discretion and the particular Goode family Omerta. So he's likeable, and has friends, but they are shallow bonds. No sleepovers, he would never dream of it and Nick wouldn't let it happen either. But he's very very good and getting and gathering information, listening at keyholes, going unnoticed to spy and because of that slyly manipulative to get the info and results he wants. People don't notice, except maybe Nick. He's the nice popular guy, the one you wish you hated but ugh no he's sweet, but again he doesn't do deep bonds and if he feels you deserve comeuppance he makes sure you get it....... and that no one ever knows Isaiah is behind it. That laser focused dedication again. He seems like the typical carefree handsome straight A class president who is friends with everybody, but underneath he is tightly controlled and calculated, aware of everything and keenly insightful, and faaaaaaaar more anxious than he seems. It's a very Batman and Bruce Wayne situation, in fact probably what Bruce would have been if his parents lived, by putting on the expected persona of the wealthy scion of the elite that totally isn't weird or into Stephen King or constantly freaking out. Just like Bruce Wayne is himself neuroatypical and probably mentally ill, which is hard to tell with the personas and drives he has built, Isaiah has a LOT of generational/genetic curses (not just the Satan bit that still has some influence but addiction issues on the Berman side and the health consequences of longterm stress marginalization and poverty that we know are passed down from mother to child. Trauma lasts ages and both his parents have that and generations of terrible parenting to get them there).
He's also got that Berman passion and tension, so on the outside he and his dad seem ultra tight and agreeing, and while they are super close, they clash a lot behind closed doors (very, YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO, GAWD DAD YOU ARE SO ANNOYING style, not like actual fights. Bratty teen stuff). And while he does follow Nick's lead on propriety and such, he has Ziggy's laugh and smile, and sometimes he'll make a gesture that's so Ziggy that Nick needs to catch his breath from the way it hits him so hard. The first time he laughed, not a baby laugh but when it was his distinct laugh, Nick heard Ziggy and almost cried.

The crimes in the DCLA shows are so very different it's hilarious. Violetta: Two idiot siblings tries stealing a fortune from a man, even hires an actor who pretends to seduce the man so she can get it. A man lies about his identity so he can spy on his teenage daughter. His teenage daughter later lies about her identity to spy on her ex. A woman tries to actively murder her stepdaughter and stepdaughter's aunt. A man breaks into a school and steals stuff, does not get fired. Soy Luna: A man rescues a toddler from a fire, but then kidnaps her and just leaves her in an orphanage in Mexico. Girl burns down a rink. Woman lies about her + others identity like 5 times. Same woman also sets her own house on fire twice (one time on accident, one time on purpose). Bia: Three teenagers are driving from Argentina to Brazil. Two of them have a license, but the third one is underaged and doesn't have a license. However, the underaged still convinces his big brother that he can drive, since the brother is very tired. Big brother agrees, as long as he's careful. Underaged brother crashes the car and dies, while his brother loses the ability to walk and the other one loses her memory and disappears from the scene (so she's presumed dead). Later on, big brother tells his father what happened and the father says they should tell everyone it was the girl who drove, since she's missing and can't defend herself. Big brother now lives with constant guilt, his dad is like "well if you told them the truth I would be in trouble since I had custody for him, you don't want me to be in trouble right?". Also his dad has an illegitimate son that he lies is actually his nephew (which is like… not a crime, but like poor kid??). Also there's someone trying to take over ownership of a house they technically don't have the right to do.

Diablo Corvus // Twenty-Five // Shapeshifter // Bouncer
Tumblr media
TRIGGER WARNING: DRUGS, ALCOHOL, ABUSE, ADDICTION, MURDER
Diablo was born into a world that never wanted him. His parents were in no place to raise a child let alone take care of themselves. His dad drank too much and his mom was busy working full time to take care of her son and afford her own addiction.
The household he grew up was very toxic. Neighbors would pound on the walls late at night as Diablo couldn't sleep because his parents were fighting. As he got a little older and bulkier in his preteens he took a few swings at his father to protect his mother. She was the one and only person he cared about in his life. Despite her own issues Diablo still loved her and she loved him.
His dad was gone before he hit thirteen. The man just dipped one day and never returned. Diablo couldn't have been happier to not have to fear if his mother would be hurt or he would have to endure the same feat.
School was stupid to Diablo. He wasn't learning anything valuable so he skipped most of the time and dropped out before he finished the eleventh grade. He didn't have many friends but the few people he did occasionally hang around with were a little older, just out of high school, and notorious for trouble. Diablo always had been too. He lived up to his name, often getting into trouble at school or being brought home for some petty arrest. Even at a young age he was a terror and as he got older he truly began to live up to his name.
He was in his teens when his shifting abilities came to light. He never knew anything about his family history and his mother would only freak out if he told her so he assumed it was his piece of shit father he inherited the skills from. It was one one decent thing he inherited from the man, in his opinion.
Maleficent entering the picture wasn't something he ever saw coming, but Diablo had been tired of a drab life and knew he was bound for a better life than just partying and taking care of his mother as her addiction grew worse.
Maleficent was powerful though with abilities like none other Diablo had seen. She taught him how to master abilities and in return he did her bidding. Diablo was loyal to the woman and did anything she asked without second thought.
Waking up in Evermore wasn't apart of the plan though. With Maleficent he was bound for greatness but then he woke up in that strange place, haunted only by the worst memories of his mother. He tried to remember the good but all he could remember were screaming matches between his parents and holding his mother's passed out body as he tried to save her from an overdose among other awful things. He chose to not think of it all, diving headfirst into drugs and alcohol to block out the haunting memories and assuming his mother was dead by now.
What he did remember, however, was Maleficent and every person that wronged her. He was still loyal to her, more now than ever. He was a bit lost, very troubled, but he had her to guide him.
It didn't take him long to get his ass in gear and find a shitty apartment. His job at Wonderland was whatever but at least he got to drink for free and beat up assholes.
He uses his shifting abilities more now than ever in Evermore. He's perfected them with Maleficent's help, but hasn't quite mastered the art of shifting or flying drunk which probably isn't a good idea in the slightest.
He uses his bird form to spy on those Maleficent has set him out to investigate, as well as his own vendettas. It's the most efficient and easiest way to gather information around town. So, no matter where someone turns Diablo is somewhere listening.
Frequently has nightmares and just bottles up all the emotions he claims not to have. One day he's just going to burst and it will be bad.
Aurora is a strange girl to Diablo. He only wants to get to know her for Maleficent's gain. He will cross any line it takes to get her in his palm and hand her to a silver platter to Maleficent. He remembers her from before Evermore, but keeps that information to himself. Maleficent enchanted Diablo so Aurora could not hear his thoughts so his though his mission is a long one he is faithful he can complete it.
He's a huge fuckboy and sleeps around a lot. Sort of lives by the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll type of life. Looks the part with a lot of leather and tattoos.
Has killed before and will do it again. Do not test him.
His loyalty to the few close people around him is no joke. He would do anything for very few people if they just ask.
Has a kitten named Hex.

Campaign Intros: The Amazonomachy
the Amazonomachy is the sequel campaign to the Orphic Uprising, set in the same world and following (most of) the same characters. it lasted a whole 27 sessions over three quarters of college, and by this point my notetaking abilities have significantly improved since my first campaign 😂
so story times from the Amazonomachy will also be full stories with real context--unless sharing them without context is funnier, of course. this campaign also has art! several of the players are artists and made both silly little doodles and beautiful/adorable serious pieces based on the characters and events of this campaign, so sometimes the story times will include art or even might just be art by itself too!
~anyway~
the setting
same as last time. it's just the Percy Jackson universe, post-canon! that's it. nothing fancy.
if you're not familiar, the basic conceit of the world is that the ancient Greek gods are real, actually (as are most/all other pantheons--yes it does get very confusing), and still having demi-god kids with mortals. otherwise it's just like the real world! there's a camp in New York, USA, called Camp Half-Blood, which is a safe haven for demi-god youth, who are often targeted by monsters. the gate to the Underworld is in LA, the minotaur's labyrinth is under the streets of NYC, you get it
the party Confusion Crew
Nina "Larry" Grayson: my PC! you know her, you met her here and in the Orphic Uprising intro. a Chinese-American daughter of Nike, goddess of Victory and companion of Athena. headstrong himbo who isn't afraid to make incredibly dumb choices if she thinks it might at all help her friends. kind of a loner until Beatrice and Chuck showed up in her life and forcibly befriended her last year. acquires a pegasus and names her Nightwing, after her favorite comic book character. during the campaign, she pretends to betray her friends and ally herself with the Amazons, but actually she's trying to spy on and sabotage their efforts. in the process, she accidentally makes new friends. might become Queen of the Amazons?
Chuck Hickey: my husband's PC! an Italian-American son of Dionysus, god of wine and revelry. raised by his Italian grandparents on their vineyard in Napa Valley, California (wine country). funny and not very responsible, but good people and an excellent battle strategist nonetheless. since facing death head on in the last campaign, he's grown a lot more impulsive and wild, leaning ever more towards the chaotic side of his godly heritage. has some magical powers, which enable him to, among other things, beat people up with plants and turn into a fire-breathing leopard. throughout this campaign and the last one, he's collected a long list of epithets; highlights include He Who Barks at Skeletons, Devourer of Minotaurs, and the Knee-Breaker
Beatrice Starveling: an African-American daughter of Apollo, god of the sun and poetry. raised by her two gay dads who are very worried about her. an incredibly talented musical theatre kid. creative and kind but also very tired, so much so that Chuck might be the smart one this time around, which is . . . concerning. she also has some magic powers, which allow her to, among other things, empower her friends to hit harder and glow like a second sun. last campaign, she pulled an Orpheus but actually succeeded, saving her dear friend Oliver from the Underworld with music from Hadestown. this time, she just wants to go home
Bryce: a newcomer to camp and son of Eros, god of love/uh, lust. all the urban white boy energy; wannabe f-boi but doesn't have quite enough game to pull it off. he's kind of an idiot and only sometimes good at flirting but he's really trying, y'all. he's trying so hard. and he cares so much. it's very endearing. knows a bit about medicine because his mom was a nurse. an archer. don't worry; unlike our last archer, he's actually cool (shh don't tell him i said that it'll give him an ego). has the biggest bromance with Murph. also sometimes he has little tiny cherub wings!
Cameron "Murph" Murphy: a newcomer to camp and son of Epimetheus, titan and embodiment of afterthought. in other words, a gullible chaos magnet who makes more dumb choices than Nina, which is saying something! had a running gag about accidentally getting involved in crazy things, like drug dealing and MLMs. tall strong California surfer bro (white). has the biggest bromance with Bryce. like seriously, they're inseparable. he's Bryce's forever third wheel but no one involved cares
important NPCs
Mo Flores: a Mexican-American daughter of Demeter, who naturally grew up on a farm. a counselor at Camp Half-Blood, and secret Amazon. she's also not so secretly a lesbian. Nina has a huge crush on her at the start of this campaign, and it seems to be mutual--at least, until it's revealed that Mo is really into the Amazons' "kill all the gods" plan because she feels personally wronged by them, at which point Nina cannot justify her crush any longer. still, except for the attempted deicide, she's pretty a cool person and an accomplished warrior
Adella: the new Queen of the Amazons, after deposing the old queen. has grand ideas about killing the gods and replacing them--after all, they overthrew the titans who overthrew their parents, so really it's just perpetuating an already existing cycle! kind of full of herself, obviously
Quinn: an Amazon and daughter of Hecate who knows some magic. one of Adella's most trusted lieutenants. serious, smart, and wary, she slowly warms up to Nina and they end up becoming pretty close. she's very hurt by Nina's reveal that she's been a double agent the whole time, but she eventually comes around to realizing that Adella's idea to kill the gods was stupid, actually, and would do a lot more harm than good. at the conclusion of the campaign, she's one of the Amazons who backs Nina's claim to the throne
Fiona: an Amazon who seems kinda into Bryce after he lays a few charmingly bad pickup lines on her. bubbly and blonde, but still an accomplished archer. at the conclusion of the campaign, she's one of the Amazons who backs Nina's claim to the throne
Oliver: Beatrice's . . . boyfriend? a son of Hermes and talented artist. friendly and sweet but also does a lot of sassing. only a little scarred from dying and then being brought back to life by Beatrice
Hops: our lovely little grain demon! we found him dumpster diving for beer at an old hotel and immediately adopted him. he looks like an ugly little baby made out of dirt and roots, and speaks in gibberish (otherwise known as chipmunk-pitched old german). sometimes Chuck carries him around in a papoose. other times, Chuck throws him like a football at an enemy and with their combined powers, they make Hops's roots grow really long and wrap around the enemy like a cage
~misc gods and goddesses and PJO characters~
the plot . . . hook
it's about year after the events of the last campaign, and the Amazons are coming to visit Camp Half-Blood . . . and while visiting, they attack the place. not very nice of them!
turns out, their new Queen Adella thinks that it's high time humans overthrew the gods, and is on a fetch quest to gather a bunch of items that will help her kill them. so our intrepid party goes out to beat them to the punch and get those items first!
and when they fail to do that, well, they can still stop Adella from becoming a new god and killing the old ones . . . right?

The Babysitter
Single-Dad!Sebastian Stan X Fem!Reader
Summary: After your sister-in-law gets you a babysitting job, you and Sebastian fall in love.
Warnings: mentions death by birth (briefly) and fluff.
A/n: HI!!! Sorry, I accidentally posted the first draft 🤦‍♀️ but this is the exact same thing just not with the ask. I absolutely loved the idea!!!
Tumblr media
You parked the car making your way upstairs. Knocking on the door it was answered by a man maybe 3 years older than you at the most. Behind him you could see a little boy hid poking his head around the corner, he couldn't have been older than 7. He had short light brown hair and bright blue eyes, that was obvious he got from his father. You recognized him from your nephew's class.
"Hello you must be y/n! I'm Sebastian, the spy back there is Julian." He said shaking your hand.
"Nice to meet you." You smiled at him before looking back at the boy. "Hi there hunny."
"Hi." Julian waved shyly.
"Come in." Sebastian welcomed. He was going out to meet up with Chris Evans since he was coming in town. So that's where you came in, you were the aunt of one of Julian's friends from school, along with babysitting for a few of his other friends. "Jule, come all the in and introduce yourself." Sebastian urged the young boy.
"Sorry tata." Julian said running over hiding behind him. "I'm Julian!"
"Nice to meet you Julian! I'm y/n." You smiled.
"I'm going to my toys now." He told his dad before running off.
"He's a delight when you get to know him." Sebastian promised. "Let me give you the run down."
———
"And bedtime is 9 no negotiations, he will try." Sebastian finished listing down the rules.
"Got it I think I can handle that. When will you be back?" You asked him.
"Uh probably around 11 or 12... You can sleep on the couch if you'd like, Netflix is signed in as well." He said.
"Okay got it. Go have a good time. I can handle Julian. Go have fun with your friend."
"Yeah uh sorry I don't leave him much. Julian!! Come say bye." He shouted. Soon the ocean eyed kid came walking into the living room.
"Bye daddy!" He hugged his dad.
"Bye buddy. Be good for y/n." Sebastian kissed his son on the top of the head and left.
"Okay. You have an hour till bedtime how about we got you in jammies and we watch a movie?" You asked.
"Yeah!! Can I pick!"
"Of course!" You smiled as you followed him to his room. "Okay pick your jammies."
"These ones!" He pulled out a pair of Captain America and Winter soldier pajamas. "My daddy is this one." He pointed at one of the characters.
"Woah! That's cool! Need any help?"
"No."
———
A tipsy Sebastian came stumbling into the apartment. He tossed his keys in the dish and went to the living room with intent to just crash on the couch. He had forgotten all about you until he saw you asleep with your feet on his coffee table, and Julian sleeping in your lap one of your hands resting gently on his back. Madagascar playing quietly in the background. He smiled, he wasn't sure about leaving Julian with someone other than his mom and step-dad. He's been raising Julian as a single dad since the day Julian was born. His mother passed giving birth. In those seven years, he's never found a woman worthy of him, and definitely not worthy of being his son's mother figure. It could be the lack of trying, or it could be that when he did try the women didn't like sharing his attention with Julian. That's why when he first saw you at his son's school, he didn't walk over.
He thought you were pretty, and wanted to ask you on a date but just couldn't work up the courage. When he did, you were already leaving, with a boy he recognized as his son's best friend. When your sister in law suggested to him you as a babysitter, he took her up on the offer, getting your number from her.
"Oh your back." A quiet voice whispered. He snapped from his thoughts seeing you rubbing your eyes with one hand keeping the other on Julian's back.
"Yeah." He smiled. "Here let me get him." Sebastian stumbled forward still tipsy.
"I don't think that's a good idea. Just go get ready for bed. I'll get him in his bed. And uh could I sleep here tonight on the couch of course. I think I'm to tired to drive." You gently stood before lifting the 7 year old with some struggle.
"Of course." Sebastian yawned before leaving to his bedroom. You smiled going to Julian's room tucking him in before making your way back to the couch and laying down. Sebastian came out a few minutes later but decided not to disturb you once he saw you about to fall asleep.
———
You shuffled away to the sound of sizzling on the stove. Looking around you saw Sebastian cooking while Julian sat on the counter talking to his dad about the night before. You yawned alerting the men of your consciousness.
"Good morning sleeping beauty." Sebastian smiled at you.
"Morning!" Julian said happily.
"Morning. What's cooking?" You asked sitting up.
"Eggs! I'm helping!" Julian exclaimed. You chuckled walking over.
"Okay Jule go get dressed I gotta talk to Y/n." Sebastian helped his son off the counter.
"You got it, Tata."
"Why does he call you tata?" You asked curiously.
"We're Romanian." Sebastian explained.
"Nice. What did you need to talk about?"
"First you need paid... And second I was wondering if I could maybe take you out for dinner sometime?" Sebastian asked nervously.
"Sure, I'd like that." You smiled.
"Daddy!!! Can I have a lollipop in my lunch today?" Julian asked running in breaking up the moment.
"Sure." Sebastian smiled.
"We'll set up times later." You whispered.
———
That day was almost 6 years ago now, you're been married for two years. Looking back you knew your sister in law was playing matchmaker for you. Not that you cared, you met your now husband and the father of your kids, Julian and Grace.
"Mom! Can you help me?" The now 13 year old Julian asked holding his tie. "Dad's busy with Gracie.
"Of course Hun come here.
"Thanks mom." Julian smiled.
"Hey dragoste? Where is Gracie's new bow is?" Your husband shouted.
"I left it with her dress." You explained. Your family was off to a premiere for one of Sebastian's movies.
"Oh! Found it!" He shouted.
"Okay here-" You started helping your son with his tie.
Once Sebastian was done dressing the 1 year old he made his way into the living room where you were just finishing tying Julian's tie.
"There you go. Very handsome." You smiled kissing your son on the forehead. Sebastian loved seeing your relationship with his son grow. He didn't expect that dinner those years ago would've led to this but he sure was glad.
"Tata! Whatcha think?" Julian said noticing his dad.
"You look great!"
"We need a photo! Julian hold you sister for one photo." You said. Sebastian laughed passing Gracie to Julian.
"Okay mom."
This was your family. Sebastian was so happy watching all the mornings you dance around with Julian in the kitchen while making breakfast. He hopes that Julian's birth mother would be proud of how far their family has came.
"Well lets go!"
Tumblr media
A/n: halfway through writing this I realize... The actor who plays billy maximoff in wandavision is named Julian as well. 🤣

Note
For rewriting the Isolde-Tristan character dynamic:
Definitely make her more confident around Tristan. This is a mace wielding warrior who doesn't hesitate to fuck shit up. Make her act like it.
On that note, maybe a little bit less volatile. Instead of trying to murder Percival and crush his dick, maybe something more like pushing him away and "Hey, what the Hell is your problem??"
I saw someone somewhere mention her picking up Tristan and sprinting away with him, and that is a fantastic idea. She cares about him and wants to support him and make sure he's OK. She can do that without putting him on a pedestal.
As for how Tristan acts around her... Look, they're teenagers. When teenagers have crushes on each other, they're stupid cringey confused little creatures. Our boy is half goddess, half demon. In both those cultures, gift giving is an important gesture. Except he doesn't want it to be SUPER obvious.
He gives her a rock. (His parents are absolutely laughing at him.) And if they should try to flirt...
"Isolde! Hi! You- You look very today!"
"...Very? I- thank you?"
"Uh... yes... very, you look very. Because you have eyes!"
"You, uh, also have eyes! They're good!"
"Yes, I do! I-I can like... see and stuff... with them..."
"Me too!"
"Hah, who knew? Haha!" *flees*
(Meliodas is trying very hard not to blow his cover where he's listening in around a corner)
( I wrote this while I was tired so it’s probably shit but-)
Meliodas would probably want to scream in frustration while simultaneously laugh burst out laughing at his sons attempts at flirting, while Elizabeth thinks it’s adorable and it reminds her a little about her and her husband’s attempts at flirting when they were younger.
[at breakfast]
Tristan: guess what dad, i wrote Isolde a letter telling her how i feel!
Meliodas, excited: that’s progress!
Tristan: yeah, i tore it up and burned it!
Meliodas, his expression immediately falling into a small grimace: uhh
Tristan, pouting while playing with his food: it’s still progress...
also
Isolde, bench pressing a barbell during training:
Tristan crushing his metal water canister in his fist while bright red: gods i wish that was me-
I also imagine her as being the tough as nails type of character, the type you definitely wouldn't want to fuck with but at same time being chill around people she likes and a bit softer with Tristan. Not like simping, but like: checking on him more than everyone else, her eyes softening when he enters a room, letting him rest on her shoulder when he’s tired, stuff like that.
And with the whole volatile thing, i thought it'd be better if Isolde was that prone to violence when she was still training to be a knight but then had mostly grown out of it . (since their like 16, I'm gonna say she started training at like 10-12)
Queue backstory that i just pulled out my ass and will most probably change later:
Back then she would always attack first and ask questions later, but her opponents usually couldn't answer those questions cuz they'd be too beat up and injured to answer said questions.
The holy knight that was training her didn’t exactly help her in that department, he didn’t take her training seriously, often slacking off only taught her the  bare bones basics once and never helped her to improve. He didn’t even try to correct her stances or anything, forcing her to spy on the other knights training and copy them to the best of her ability.
This only served to make her angrier.
Isolde would often let her emotions cloud her judgement, leading her to be reckless and make rash (usually violent) decisions
...until she met Tristan that is.
Howser, wanting this child to take a chill pill, made her the personal knight of Prince Tristan. Isolde wasn’t exactly thrilled with this, why would she want to look after some snobby prince when she could be learning how to fight dragons and destroy armies?!
Despite that, she took her job very seriously because her trainer promised to take her out on a mission if she did. (imagine this scruffy 11-12 year old girl, who might have a lisp, puffing up her chest trying to be serious lol)
But to her surprise, the tiny prince (well tiny compared to her anyway) wasn’t snobby in the slightest, he was a hyper ball of sunshine who basically bounced off the walls and ran away whenever he got the chance. That kid could run fast
Tristan was a little scared of her at first, the girl was intense and terrifying, but eventually with a bit of encouragement from Elizabeth, tried to befriend her.
He noticed that Isolde’s form was off when she swung her mace making her lose a bit of balance, so he offered to teach her what he knew. Isolde begrudgingly accepted because although the prince’s weapon of choice was a sword he did know a few things about how to use a mace cuz he thought they were cool.
Plus he kicked her ass in training in like 2 seconds flat, so she needed all the help she could get.
Eventually Isolde found herself endeared by his friendly goofball nature and she started to recuperate his friendship.
Their friendship became official after the two were walking through the streets of Liones and they almost got mugged. Through joint teamwork they beat the thrives up, but Isolde was pissed off and nearly broke one of their legs in a fit of rage.
Thankfully Tristan held her wrist tightly to stop her mace from coming down.
“Prince Tristan?! What’re you-“
“Isolde, they’ve had enough, look at them.” Tristan gestured to the three thieves on the ground, they looked thin, incredibly thin. “Their just hungry and needed some money.”
Tristan gently pulled her wrist down and then offered the thieves the loaf of bread they had bought to share. The thieves ran away with it obviously, and left them both staring after them.
“Welp come on Isolde we still have to go to park!”
“…how did you notice that they were-“
“Hungry? I don’t like running into things before I know all the facts cuz you never know what could’ve actually happened or if it was a misunderstanding, you can’t just rush in weapons first cuz it’ll just make the situation worse, ya’know?”
“…right?”
They make it to the park and sit on the swings, Isolde being deep in thought while Tristan is swinging so high that it’s likely he’s gonna fly off any second.
“…do you wanna be friends with me?”
“Hah?!!”
Tristan let’s go in shock and catapults himself face first into the grass.
“Prince Tristan!!!” Isolde ran over to check on him.
He immediately sat up, his face bruised slightly and covered in dirt, “I will absolutely be your friend!!!”
“Great…uhm but are you, like, okay?”
The hybrid held up his baby tooth that had been knocked out in the crash before smiling at her with a bloody smile.
“Yep!”
“…let’s get you to the infirmary.”
“Yes please-“
After that they became friends and Isolde started working on her anger issues, and by the present manga she’s seriously improved! Although there are a few times where she lets her emotions get the best of her but not to the extent of her trying to crush someone’s balls.
Basically I like to think that Tris and Isolde would be a calming presence for each-other.
(I’m open to changes)

I have the weird headcanon that TFRB Cody could adopt Lazerbeak brother, Buzzsaw. I haven't read a lot of TF comics so I don't know he's current status, still I always saw Cody as a typical animal owner, and I think it would be kind of cute too. Could you write some scenes of theme meeting and become friends
Come Home to Roost
Buzzsaw was tired. He was so, so tired. He missed Soundwave. He missed Laserbeak. Pit damn it, he also missed the those infernal twins and that Pit-spawned cat. They had been family for so long. Had been home. It had been them that he returned to every night to roost. It had been them that he had built his nest among. It had been them that he had come to call flock.
Now though…how could they be flock, when they had left him behind? Even his sister had left. He had thought Soundwave cared more than that. Apparently not, though. It had been a miracle that he’d made it off Centauri-12 after being abandoned. But he had, and he’d wandered the cosmos, stowing away on any ship he could find. He didn’t know what his goal was. To survive, he supposed. Find a new roost, though knowing how Primus had abandoned him thus far in his life, he doubted their “benevolent” Creator would have such kindness to direct towards him.
And perhaps he should not be surprised, really. He had been one of Soundwave’s most vicious Cassettes, after Ravage. But was that really something to be punished? He had had to be vicious. His sister had refused to be, and before Soundwave that meant he’d had to step up to keep her safe, to keep them both safe. Cybertron had not been kind to Cassettes, after all. Under Functionism, Cassettes had been viewed as little more than slaves, pets, property. He’d had to be vicious, then. It had been the only way they’d kept their lives, kept their freedom. After Soundwave, he’d had to continue to be vicious. Whereas Laserbeak had been the Host’s spy, Buzzsaw had been the attacker from above. Where Ravage had killed and torn from the ground, Buzzsaw had swooped in and brought death from the skies. After Soundwave, he’d been vicious because his new Host had needed him to be a protector still. And with Soundwave there had been Megatron, and he’d gone from protector to soldier.
Now though…now he wasn’t much of anything. Left behind on an uninhabited world that had drawn the War to it due to its energon mines, forgotten by the very one who had vowed to shelter and care for him, by his kin, by the family had come to call his own. He didn’t even feel them over the bond they’d shared anymore. They’d known he was alive when they’d left Centauri-12. He knew they had, the bond had told him as much. But they’d left anyway. And so he’d broken it. It had almost killed him. Cassettes were hard-coded for loyalty. It was part of their very core. To break the bond when he’d sworn his loyalty to Soundwave….it had made his spark burn with agony. But what other choice had he had? They’d left him behind, cast him aside, and left him with nothing.
He’d had to hitch a ride in the Autobot ship, which had left the planet later then his former allies. He’d been discovered when they’d landed again, and had had to flee. He’d continued like that, going from ship to ship, Neutral, Autobot, and even Decepticon, always fleeing when he was found. He’d even hidden away on the ships of organic species. It seemed his luck had finally run out, though. He’d been on the ship of a species called the Kaminoans, but after they’d found and attempted to capture him he’d been forced to flee into the vast expanse of space. It had almost killed him. He wasn’t space-faring. His armor couldn’t stand the pressure for long. Thankfully, his long-range sensors had detected a habitable planet in the nearest star system, and he’d fled as fast as his tired, starved frame could take him. The Kaminoans hadn’t given chase.
He remembered his first view of the planet. It was blue, with large green landmasses. Then he’d breached the atmosphere, and his systems hadn’t been able to handle the stress. He’d offlined, and come to surrounded by some sort of extremely salty liquid. He hadn’t been able to fly, and had had to go on foot, hoping to make his way to land. He didn’t want to rust on the floor of some massive salty pool of liquid. So he’d forced himself to move, and eventually he’d dragged himself onto some tiny, rocky shore. He’d only had the energy to cast out his sensors for one look around, enough to realize he had dragged himself onto some sort of island, and then his systems had dragged him into an emergency shutdown.
Blissfully, Buzzsaw knew no more.
——————————
When his systems pulled him from his forced recharge, Buzzsaw knew he was in trouble. His optics onlined with a dull glow, and his focused briefly on his HUD, taking in the messages flitting across it. After a moment, he chuffed and forced himself to stand. His self-repair had healed just enough damage to drag him from the edge of a stasis lock, but then the system had shut down in response to low energon. He was at 15% right now, which meant he had the rest of this orn to find fuel before his frame went into emergency stasis. After that..it would be too late for him.
The only way for a Cybertronian to be pulled out of emergency stasis was for another bot to fuel them enough that their systems kicked back online. Otherwise, the stasis would keep the bot in question under, only the bare essential systems running in order to keep the spark alight. Eventually, even those would give out, and the bot would die. Buzzsaw had heard claims that it was a peaceful way to go. That after entering stasis, you wouldn’t be aware of anything, which meant death was just like slipping under. You wouldn’t actually feel pain, wouldn’t feel your spark gutter.
Personally, Buzzsaw didn’t believe that. He thought dying like that was frightening. How could it not be? Feeling your systems fail and shut down, one by one, until you didn’t even have the strength to vent on your own. Your frame shutting down slowly, a klick at a time, until your awareness and consciousness was the last to go, but able to feel each and every one of your non-vital systems go offline. Your processor slipping under, your spark forced to still and shrink to conserve energy, your last thought either a prayer to be found or the grim knowledge you’d die where you lay.
No, Buzzsaw didn’t see the peace in a death like that. He looked around, taking in his surroundings, and then started walking. His wings were folded, and he made no attempt to fly. It would take too much of his energy. So he had to stay on the ground to conserve what precious little he had left. He only hoped he found an energon source. If he was extraordinarily lucky, this planet produced it. His best chances were at finding a underground mine. Liquid energon wells weren’t found anywhere but Cybertron. Other planets only produced the fuel in its crystalline form.
He hobbled along, and it wasn’t long before he was stumbling across a cave. He felt the faintest stirrings of hope as he hobbled in, sending out a faint ping of his sensors. Maybe he would find energon after all. Distracted as he was, he didn’t notice when the ground under him crumbled, and he fell into the deeper caverns below. He hit the ground hard, and his HUD threw up frantic damage warnings.
He dismissed them dispassionately, resignation settling in his spark. The fall had taken out his left leg, and his right wing was bent. He wouldn’t be able to move. This was it for him. He was going to slip into stasis lock and die here. As his systems started to shut down, he only had enough energy for one last action. Just before his consciousness was stolen away, he thought of the family he’d lost, and the life he would no longer be able to live.
Buzzsaw lifted his head and released a haunting cry, the caves all over the island echoing with his grief and regret. Then his optics went dark, and his helm fell to the dusty ground with a soft clang of metal on rock.
In the tunnels around him, his death knell echoed on.
——————————
Optimus shuttered his optics and tilted his head when the haunting cry floated from the tunnels leading out of the bunker. The Rescue Bots and their partners, who were also in the Lounge area, paused what they were doing and looked up. The Prime frowned, concerned. Young Cody was in the tunnels. Was he perhaps hurt?
“It must be a bird.” Graham said after a moment. “That’s what it sounds like, anyway. It might be lost in the tunnels and calling for its flock.”
That reassured Optimus. Now that he stopped to think, the cry HAD sounded more animal than human.
“Should we go help?” Boulder asked, clearly concerned.
“No.” Chief Burns said after a moment. “Let’s give it a bit. It might get out on it’s own. If it’s still crying like that in an hour, then we can help.”
“Got it, dad.” Graham agreed, and then he and his partner were returning to their previous task.
The other Bots and humans soon followed suit. Optimus was left staring at the tunnel entrance, lips twisted in a frown. Something was tugging at his processor. That call had definitely been animal in nature. But it had also sounded just faintly mechanical. His audials had barely even picked up on that aspect of the eerie wail, but he had heard it, he was certain of that.
The buzzing of the comm. system tore him from his thoughts. It was Cody.
“Uh, Dad? Guys?”
Chief Burns was answering in less than a minute. “We’re here, Cody. What is it? Do you need help?”
“No. Well, kind of. I don’t need help, but I found someone who might.”
Kade scoffed. “What, is a lost bird flying around in a panic? Just try and scare it back towards the entrance, it’ll be fine. We heard that call, I’m sure it was just calling for its friends.”
“Um, no.” Cody was blunt. “It’s not a bird. Not an Earth one, anyway.”
“Can you repeat that, son?”
“It’s not an Earth bird. I think it’s Cybertronian. And it looks like it’s hurt pretty bad.”
Optimus froze. A Cybertronian bird. That wasn’t possible. The only types of Cybertronian avians he knew of were Cassettes.
“Cody.” he cut in. “What color is it? Is it red and black?”
“No, Optimus. It’s black and…brown, I think? It’s really dirty. I can’t see what the other color is very clearly. It might not be brown.”
Not Laserbeak, then. But he didn’t know of any brown and black avian Cassette. Maybe one had escaped Cybertron on its own? It was extremely unlikely, but he supposed it wasn’t impossible. Cassettes were perfectly capable and intelligent.
“Oh, wait. I have a towel in my pack. I can see if I can clean some of the dirt.”
“Why do you have a towel in your bag?” Kade snarked. “You were just exploring the caves.”
“Sure, but I wanted to go to the beach right after. Hang on, I almost got it…” there was a pause. “There. It’s black and yellow. It’s still hard to tell because the grime is really caked in and the paint is old and fading, but I think the other color is yellow.”
Optimus froze. Black and yellow. But how? Buzzsaw had been lost on Centauri-12. Except…that wasn’t quite right either. He vaguely remembered a report that Jazz had found the Cassette stowing away on the Ark after the Autobots had left that planet, but that he’d been chased off before he could be captured when they’d been near a space docks. Had the little avian really survived on his own so long? It seemed almost ludicrous to even think it, yet he knew there was only one black and yellow Cybertronian bird who had left Cybertron.
“Hold on, Cody. I believe I may know who that is. Tell me, is he awake?”
“It’s a him? And no. I’m almost not sure if he’s even still…” Cody trailed off, but Optimus understood.
“I see. Stay where you are. I am coming now. And be wary. If I am correct, then that is Buzzsaw. He is a formidable foe, and if he wakes you must stay away from him.”
“Alright. I’ll be here.” the boy agreed, the the comm. cut off with a click.
“Wait, foe? Is this one of those Decepticons you mentioned, Optimus?” Chief Burns asked.
“He is indeed.” The Prime informed him.
“Then why should we help?” Kade asked. “If he’s one of the bad guys, shouldn’t we leave him there?”
“No.” Heatwave stood, crossing his arms. Glancing around, Optimus could see the same resolve the fire truck was showing in the rest of the Rescue Bots. “‘Con or not, we aren’t leaving him. We’re Rescue Bots, we save anyone who needs it, regardless of who they are. If you won’t help, we’ll do it on our own.”
“You are correct, Heatwave. It would be wrong to leave Buzzsaw to perish.” Optimus agreed. He looked down at the humans. “If he is truly as injured as Cody says, then he will be of little threat. So long as you are wary, he will likely be unable to cause you harm.”
“Are you certain, Optimus?” Chase asked.
“Yes. Buzzsaw is a Cassette. He is far smaller than any of you. He is also very young. I believe that he is the equivalent of a human teenager, if my memory is not mistaken.” The Prime soothed.
That was clearly the key to convince the Chief. “Go.” the human said. “If we can help, we will. It wouldn’t be right to leave him there.”
Optimus nodded, and then folded down into his alt-mode and drove. He had not told the humans, but he was certain that the call they had heard earlier had in fact been Buzzsaw himself. He had not wanted to mention it, to avoid distressing the others too much. But he was certain of it now.
That haunting cry hadn’t been a call for help, it had been a death song.
——————————
Optimus pulled up alongside Cody, shifting to root mood as his optics found the still form lying limp on the ground. Primus, it really was Buzzsaw. He crouched down, one large hand slipping under the too-light form of the downed Cassette. This wasn’t right. Cassettes were smaller and not as heavily armored as a normal mech, but the avian shouldn’t be this light. Looking at him now, the Prime was starting to realize that Buzzsaw had likely been on his own and in a state of gradual starvation ever since Centauri-12.
“Optimus? Is he going to be okay?” It was Cody, and the boy was frowning up at him.
He hesitated, then folded into his alt-mode, carefully ensuring that Buzzsaw ended up in his cab. He opened his door, letting the human climb in, and then he was driving back to the bunker. He was silent for a lone moment before he finally spoke.
“I will not lie, Cody Burns. Buzzsaw’s status is…not promising.” he said after a moment.
There was silence as he drove, and then-
“You said he was a foe. Does that mean he’s a Decepticon?”
“Yes.” He answered simply.
There was more silence.
“Optimus?”
“Yes?”
“Why did the Decepticons start the War?”
Optimus was silent for a long moment. The boy truly was perceptive. But how could he answer that?
“Cybertron…was not kind to all its children.” he said after a long moment. “There were many policies in place that kept those of high status in power, and left those of lower social classes struggling.” There. That should be a simple enough explanation.
“And the Decepticons were those lower class bots?”
“Many of them, yes.” Optimus paused. “You must understand, Cody. Cybertron was not the utopia some of my Autobots may believe it was. There were many who suffered greatly. However, while the Decepticons may have risen from a just cause, that does not justify the depths they have since fallen to.”
Cody hummed. “I get it.” he said softly.
Optimus relaxed. Good. He didn’t want to lie to Cody, but he didn’t want to boy to think that the Decepticons were harmless. He feared that if that were the case, the young human may do something foolish in the future. No, it was better he understood the War for what it was.
“Optimus?”
“Yes?”
“What’s going to happen to Buzzsaw?”
Ah. “I…do not know. If he is able to recover, I cannot allow him to go free. It would cause immense trouble for my team and my Autobots if he were to rejoin his Master.” he sighed.
“Master?”
“Buzzsaw is a Cassette. They do not often live their lives independently.”
“Why?”
“…perhaps that is a detail best explained with all the others.”
“Okay.” Cody tilted his head. “So you can’t let him go. Can you take him with you?”
Optimus winced. “That would not be wise. I am afraid my team would not understand. I am all too willing to give Buzzsaw a chance, but if I were to bring him to my base I fear the others would argue in favor of his…deactivation.”
“Deactivation.” A pause. “You mean they’d want to kill him.” he whispered.
“The Decepticons have caused my mechs a great deal of pain, Cody.” Optimus said softly. “They would not do it to be cruel, but I know there would be more than one among them who would believe such action justified. An eye for an eye, as the earth saying goes.”
“It doesn’t make it right.”
“No.” Optimus agreed. “But it is War, and those who suffer the effects of it long enough do not enough grasp right from wrong any longer, only what hurts have been inflicted and how best to return them.”
“It’s a cycle.” Cody said sadly.
“A cruel, bitter one.”
Optimus could see the light of the bunker up ahead. He drove towards it in silence, spark heavy.
“Optimus?”
“Yes?”
“Do you think…Buzzsaw could stay here? On Griffin Rock, I mean. Maybe I could help him. The team too. He looks like he’s been on his own a long time. At least, I think he has been. If he has a “Master” like you said, I don’t think they’d let him get this bad off.” There was a pause. “Maybe he’s tired enough to not want to go back to the War? It’s worth a try, right? I want to help him.”
And Optimus, for the first time since he realized who the downed Cybertronian was, felt the faintest stirrings of hope.
——————————
Buzzsaw was resting. Blades had prepared a large crate on which to treat the injured Cassette, and as soon as Optimus had released the avian the small copter bot was scanning him and bustling around to repair him. He’d gotten an energon line started already, and currently his digits were transformed into the medical tools he needed to repair the damage to the Cassette’s internals and armor. As Blades worked, Optimus shared everything he had told Cody in the tunnel with the others.
“So he can’t go with you because your team might kill him, and you can’t let him go because he’d go back to his Master and cause trouble for your team.” Heatwave sighed. “I suppose that means his Host is here on Earth?”
“Soundwave is here, yes.” Optimus hummed. “He is Megatron’s Third in Command and Chief Communications Officer.”
“Ah, yes. I can see how that would cause issues if such a mech were to regain access to his Cassette.” Chase said.
“Cassette.” Cody said slowly. “You called him that in the tunnel too. It’s important. Why?”
Optimus hummed. “First, you must understand that Cybertronians are divided by our frame-types. There are flight frames, and among them you have Helios, Jets, Shuttles, and Seekers. Among the ground frames, there are cars, two-wheelers, trucks, and even more. There are even aquatic frames, though they are few and far between. Beyond them, you have triple-changers, bots who naturally have two alt-forms rather than one. There are also those with non-vehicular alt-modes. And finally, you also have mini-bots, and alongside them there are Cassettes.”
The humans were staring, focused intently on the overly simplified lesson. The Rescue Bots didn’t pay it much mind, however.
“Among all those frame-types, barring Cassettes, it was not uncommon on for some bots to have additional abilities on top of the normal abilities granted to them by their frames. Host mech are one such example. They can be any frame-type, but they are set apart because of their ability to bind their sparks to those of Cassettes in order to form a symbiotic bond.”
Cody blinked. “What do they each get out of the bond?”
“The Cassettes gain protection. Cassettes were…not a well-regarded class. They were found on the streets or in the wilds, and often forced to struggle for their very survival. Most Cybertronians viewed them as simple-minded or feral. They were not thought of as having much intelligence, or even sentience.” Optimus forced himself to continue at the disturbed looks the humans wore. “So for Cassettes, a bond with a Host was a chance at safety. They relinquished their freedom to their Host, and in return they would be given fuel, shelter, care, and above all else, safety. In return, the Hosts received the obedience of their Cassettes, and the Cassettes would help them with any task, function, or job they required.”
Cody was sitting next to Buzzsaw, and the Prime saw him extend a hand to lay it on the avian’s head. “That…that doesn’t sound very fair, Optimus.”
“Perhaps.” he agreed. “But most Hosts treated their Cassettes well and were very fond of them. Such a bond was necessary for many. Cassettes get their name because they do not have an alt-mode capable of movement. Their alt-mode is always a cassette tape or something else very similar. When the bond is formed, a Cassette gains the ability to dock within the armor of their Host while they are in their alt-mode. It is an added degree of safety.”
Chief Burns hummed. “I think I get it. The important bits, anyway. The cultural stuff…” He trailed off. “That I have a harder time wrapping my head around, but I get why our guest being a Cassette matters.”
“Oh?” Optimus had little doubt he did. The Chief was an intelligent man.
“He’s going to want to return to his Host. Because Soundwave is synonymous with safety for him, right?”
“That is likely.” Optimus agreed.
“But you said Hosts usually care a lot about their Cassettes. If that’s true, how did Buzzsaw get like this?” Cody cut in.
The Prime tilted his head. “The last reports of Buzzsaw’s location are many years old. He was last seen on an uninhabited planet that briefly became a battlefield for the War. The Decepticons fled, and the last reports on Buzzsaw are from after Megatron took his army off Centauri-12. It is likely the damage he sustained is a result of him being on his own.”
“So he might have been abandoned?”
“That…seems the most likely scenario, yes. Though Soundwave’s fondness for his Cassettes has always been well known, so I am at a loss as to why he would be left behind thus.”
“Does it matter why?” Cody asked.
“What are you thinking, little brother?” Dani sounded amused.
“If Soundwave abandoned Buzzsaw when he was supposed to be caring for him, then would Buzzsaw really want to go back?”
Optimus reset his optics, startled. “I…had not considered that.” he said after a moment. “I do not know. That is something you will have to ask him yourself.”
Cody perked up. “So you think he would benefit from staying, then?”
Optimus turned to Chief Burns. “If your father agrees, then yes, I do believe so. I have seen the effect you have on bots, young Cody. I believe you can soften even the hardest of sparks. If you are willing to put forth the effort, then there is a chance that you maybe able to help Buzzsaw.”
Chief Burns crossed his arms. “Will he be dangerous in any way?”
Optimus turned to the copter bot still treating the avian. “Blades. Can you disable his weapons systems and battle protocols?”
“Already did.” The young bot sounded distracted. “I disconnected his turbines and anti-gravs too, so he won’t be able to fly. Though I don’t recommend keeping that second part a thing for long. He’s a avian, he needs flight as much as any other flyer.”
Optimus nodded, then turned back to the oldest human. “With those measures in place, I believe that he will be a minimal threat. If he turns out to be a greater risk than you are willing to take, you can always call me.”
Chief Burns considered it, then nodded. “Alright. He can stay. It’s only right to give him the chance.”
Kade frowned. “Is that really so smart? Optimus said it himself! He’s one of the bad guys!”
“But how much choice did he have, if he fought the War his Host joined?” Graham asked.
“Does it matter? The ‘Cons still hurt people!”
“Our War is not so black and white, Kade Burns.” Optimus warned.
“So some political policies and social perceptions sucked! That’s bad, but is it really a reason to start a war?” Kade demanded.
“The Senate used ritual disfigurement as a punishment.” Blades’s voice carried over, sounding distracted.
All heads snapped to him. Kade gaped, and the other humans looked horrified. Privately, Optimus winced. Perhaps that wasn’t the nicest detail to share, but it was too late now.
“What?” Kade sputtered.
“The Senate were the political rulers of Cybertron. They controlled pretty much everything.” Blades mumbled, still focused mostly on Buzzsaw. “When a bot went against them, even in a minor way, they’d use punishment called empurata that involved surgically removing the bot’s face and hands and replacing them with one large optic and a pair of claws.”
Kade swallowed. “Okay. So it was really, really bad. I guess I was wrong.” he said, sounding too sick to care that he’d just admitted to being wrong.
The other humans also looked horrified. Cody looked like his entire worldview had been shaken.
“Cybertron was not kind to all its children, before the War.” Optimus said quietly. “The Decepticons were more than justified in rising up to fight for their freedom. But they took things too far, and now their original cause has long been lost.”
Chief Burns was the first to recover. “That’s often the case, with wars.”
Optimus nodded solemnly.
“We’ll take care of Buzzsaw.” Cody’s voice carried over. Despite how horrified he’d seemed earlier, now he just looked determined. “We’ll show him there’s good in the world. Maybe he doesn’t want to fight anymore. I want to help him.”
The Prime smiled, them dipped his helm. “And so you shall.” he agreed. “When he wakes, tell him that I am leaving him here. I recommend you tell him that Soundwave is on this planet. If you withhold the information, and manage to befriend him, then he may feel betrayed if he learns you hid the fact from him and return to Soundwave on his own.” he warned.
Cody nodded. “I’ll tell him.”
Optimus hummed. “We cannot set him free at this moment. But if you feel it is right, you may also tell him that his other option is that he will remain a prisoner in the Autobot base, but that in that scenario I will have difficulty guaranteeing his safety.” he warned.
Cody tilted his chin up, clearly displeased. “That won’t happen.”
The large bot chuckled. “I hope you are right, Cody Burns.” he nodded at the other humans, flaring his field in a good-bye to the Rescue Bots, and then he was folding into his alt-mode and driving out through the tunnels. He’d get the mainland and call for a ground bridge from there.
He truly hoped Buzzsaw could find happiness. Primus knew the Cassette had earned it.
——————————
Awareness came to him slowly. At first, Buzzsaw was confused. He was fairly certain he’d slipped into emergency stasis. He hadn’t onlined his optics yet, but the messages blinking across his HUD didn’t help his confusion.

Well. That last warning certainly warranted some degree of alarm. Red optics snapped online and the avian lifted his helm. His gaze immediately found the aforementioned Cybertronian. It was a small orange and white copter bot, and immediately clear was the Autobot insignia on his chest. For a moment, Buzzsaw tense, his vocalizer releasing a sound halfway between a screech and a growl. He made to stand, to fight off the perceived threat, when the bot pressed him down with a hand between his wings.
“Easy, easy. You’re okay.” He soothed. “My name is Blades, of Rescue Team Sigma-17. You’re on a planet called Earth. My team and I just want to help you.”
His words made Buzzsaw pause and take another look. Huh. That was right. The badge on his chest wasn’t the Autobrand after all. But how? He was fairly certain that Megatron had destroyed the Rescue Force and killed all its Teams. How had this lone team survived? He cocked his head sharply, eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“You’re Buzzsaw, right? Optimus Prime was here earlier. He told us about you.”
Well. There went his hopes of his Decepticon status going unknown. And the Prime was here, on this planet? That meant Megatron was doubtless here as well. But who else was?
Blades shifted under his gaze, then sighed. “Just stay still, okay? I patched up what I could. Now your self-repair needs to handle the rest. You need to rest if you want to recover.” He made to leave, then paused. “Also, Optimus told us to tell you your options. You’re on an island called Griffin Rock. You can stay here and stay out of the War, or he can return and keep you prisoner in his base. He said if you go with the second option he’d have a difficult time guaranteeing your safety.” Buzzsaw could see that the small mech was clearly uncomfortable with that last series of statements. He didn’t seem fond of the idea of violence or what amounted to keeping someone against their will.
After another beat, the bot nodded at someone else in the room. Buzzsaw snapped his helm in that direction and saw a small organic. He heard Blades leave, and then the organic was looking up at him. The small creature beamed, and them he was climbing up onto the crate that the avian found himself confined to.
“Hi! I’m the one who found you. My name is Cody.”
Buzzsaw stared, optics narrowed.
“I’m sorry about your choices here, I know they aren’t the best. Optimus doesn’t want you going back to Soundwave though.”
That made him freeze and perk up. Soundwave was on this planet too? A part of him was excited and wanted to seek out his Host. He remembered the kindness, the affection, the gentle treatment. He remembered the safety and security that had come from being bound to the spymaster.
He also remembered the abandonment. Remembered the years of fear and pain and hunger that had followed. Remembered the loss and betrayal, the desperation that his Host would return only to be forced to come to terms with the fact he’d been cast aside.
Buzzsaw clacked his beak, then looked away and forced down the sad coo that wanted to escape him. He felt something on his armor, and looked over to see the organic–Cody–pressing a small, soft hand to the plating of his neck.
“He left you, didn’t he? Optimus told us a little bit about Hosts and Cassettes, and about Centauri-12. You got like this because your Host left you.”
Buzzsaw stared, not knowing how to respond. A part of him, the part that was vicious and angry, wanted to rip off the organic’s limb. The larger part of him was just tired, though. After a long moment of staring, the avian sagged, optics dimming. What was the harm in telling this organic anyway? It wasn’t like he was really a Decepticon anymore. Not really. It also wasn’t like Cody would be able to cause him much harm, anyway.
He nodded, his beak clacking and his wings rustling as he let out a gust of air from his vents. That hand hadn’t left his neck, and it moved to stroke up and down the plating.
“I’m sorry.” Cody said softly. “No one deserves to be abandoned by their family.”
Buzzsaw stared for a moment. The organic had said they’d only been told a little bit about Hosts and Cassettes, yet it seemed he already understood the bond was fairly deep. Either he’d been told more than he let on, or he was just very perceptive. Either way, a part of Buzzsaw couldn’t help but be grateful for the understanding.
He knew he should be lashing out and trying to fight. But what was the point? His weapons systems and battle protocols were disabled, he couldn’t fly, he couldn’t walk, and his fuel levels were too low for him to have the energy to do anything significant. Even without all that, he was just tired of fighting. True, he’d always enjoyed a good, honest fight, but he’d only ever used his more excessive forms of violence because that was what had been demanded of him. He’d had to be violent to survive the wilds before Soundwave, and after he’d had to be violent to fight for his new Host. But he hadn’t wanted life as a fighter, as a soldier. And now, confronted with everything he’d learned, and the last few years of his abandonment…he was tired. He didn’t want to fight this organic. He just wanted rest. He could figure out everything else later.
Besides, the gentle contact didn’t feel so bad. It wasn’t heavy enough to hurt, and it was more reminiscent of the preening he’d used to do with his sister. His optics dimmed, and he let his head come to lay on the crate. Cody didn’t seem offended at his lack of responsiveness. Instead, he felt that small hand move up to stroke over the top of his helm.
“Get some rest, Buzzsaw. I’ll be here when you wake up. I want to help you get better.” the small organic murmured.
Buzzsaw didn’t know what to do with that sentiment. A part of him scoffed at the weakness of it. The other part was too tired and beaten down to care. He released another heavy vent of air, and let his optics slip offline. Moments later, he was slipping into recharge, even the brief moment of consciousness having drained what little energy he had.
——————————
Cody was indeed there when he woke up. It was only for a few moments though, because then the organic had to go to school. Apparently, this planet also has educational institutions. Buzzsaw didn’t have much of an opinion on that. While he was gone, the rest of the Rescue Bots introduced themselves, as did their own organic partners, and he was informed that the organics were called “humans”. Again, Buzzsaw didn’t particularly care. It was useful information, he supposed.
The others left him to himself throughout the day, except for the brief moment when Blades came to remove the energon line feeding fuel into his frame and replace it with a small cube of energon that was set in front of him. After that, he was left alone. Perhaps they sensed his mood, perhaps they were busy, perhaps they didn’t want to talk to him. He didn’t particularly care. It did give him time to think on his situation, though. Obviously, they wouldn’t let him go free. Even if he did promise to not return to Soundwave, he knew he would have difficulty hiding here. Since, apparently, it was very important that the human race didn’t learn about the Cybertronian presence on their planet. One would think they’d have figured it out when the alien war came to earth, but he wouldn’t question it. Still, it meant he couldn’t just be let loose on his own.
He also refused to be an Autobot prisoner. As for returning to his Host…he was torn. A part of him wanted to. But the larger part of him was still hurt. And after his distance from the Decepticons…he wasn’t sure he wanted to return to the faction itself. Pits, he didn’t even have his brand anymore. He’d come across a Neutral medic sometime after Centauri-12, and he’d offered up his services to locate energon in return for the medic’s services to remove the brand. It had been a thin sheet of metal painted purple and welded to his chest, so it had required the aid of a medic to remove without damaging his armor. But it had been done, and then they’d gone their separate ways. He hadn’t worn the Decepticon badge in years.
So where did that leave him? He couldn’t escape in his state, but even when he recovered, what then? What was there for him on this little island? What was there for him on this planet itself? Would it be worth staying?
He must have drifted into recharge at some point, because he was startled awake by Cody’s loud greeting to the others. He jerked, optics flashing on as he lifted his helm. The human blinked when he came around the corner, then smiled.
“Buzzsaw! You’re up!” he called out. He walked over, pulling himself up onto the crate beside the avian. “So, I had an idea! Blades told me you don’t have to be hooked up to anything anymore, and I noticed how your armor seems pretty dirty, so I was wondering if you’d like to get clean?”
Buzzsaw blinked at him. The human gestured to the corner, and he looked over to see a large tub and a bucket that hadn’t been there before. There were rags in the bucket.
“Boulder offered to help. I figured you might feel better if you can get the grime off?” He offered.
He stared for a moment, and then he dipped his head in a nod.
Cody grinned. “Great! I’ll get Boulder. I have to change clothes really quick.”
Buzzsaw cocked his head sharply at that. Clothes?
Cody interpreted the curious gesture for what it was. “Clothes are what humans wear!” he plucked at the colorful things clinging to his frame. “We don’t have metal armor like you guys, and we don’t need it, but we wear clothes to cover ourselves because it’s not considered decent to go without them.” He tapped his chin. “Chase once told me it would be like if a Cybertronian went around without any armor at all.”
Buzzsaw jerked his head back, optics shuttering. Ah. That, he understood. So human had their own version of a protoform underneath their clothing. He did not want to see a fully bare fleshy protoform, thank you very much. He lowered his helm, bumping his beak into Cody’s back to encourage him to go. The boy laughed, then jumped off the crate and trotted away.
A moment later, Boulder came around and smiled at him. “Hey, Buzzsaw. Cody said you accepted our offer to help you clean?” He nodded at the tub. “Is it okay if I carry you there? You shouldn’t be putting weight on your leg.”
Buzzsaw grumbled, but after a moment he nodded. He didn’t exactly want to be carried like a helpless sparkling, but he couldn’t get there on his own. Not in his state. Boulder paid no mind to his grumbles, and instead stepped forward to slip a large hand underneath his frame. The avian was lifted up, then carefully cradled in gentle hands. He was brought to the tub, then lowered into the liquid that filled it. He cooed in pleasure upon realizing it was warm, frame relaxing every so slightly.
Cody chose that moment to return, his lower half covered in something very colorful and the rest of his form bare. He climbed into the tub with Buzzsaw, then dragged the bucket in after himself. On the outside of the tub, Boulder grabbed a larger rag and dipped it into the liquid in the tub.
“Is the water okay? Not too hot?” Cody asked.
Oh, right. This was water. He recognized it now. Other planets had it too. He nodded, watching the Rescue Bot soak the rag in the warm water and hold it out towards him.
“Boulder is going to take care of your armor, and I thought I’d use my smaller size to get in between everything and get all the dust and muck out from your armor seams?” Cody suggested.
Buzzsaw stared for a long moment. That was…rather intimate. But he also hadn’t been able to have such an in depth cleaning since before Centauri-12. He could feel the dirt and grim in between and underneath his armor plates. Even if he didn’t trust these people, he did trust they wouldn’t hurt him. They’d have done so already if they were going to hurt him at all. He could bear some rather intimate grooming if it meant getting clean. He nodded.
Cody beamed, and then Buzzsaw felt the gentle pressure of Boulder wiping off the surface of his armor. While the bot worked at that, Cody chose a rag from the bucket that Buzzsaw now saw was full of cleaning cloths and brushes. The human soaked it in the water, then lifted it and started wiping it along the edges of his armor plates. The avian let himself relax into the warmth of the water, optics slipping offline. He didn’t know what to make of his situation, and he wasn’t sure he liked being forced to stay, but for now he’d enjoy the moment of comfort.
He didn’t realize when he slipped into a state of half-recharge. He was barely aware as the bath finished, and then Boulder transferred him to a large towel which was used to dry him off. Cody went to get blankets while Boulder did so, using the soft fabrics to make a comfier “nest” on the crate that Buzzsaw was returned to a moment later. The avian cooed as he was set into the soft nest, optics offlining fully as he rested his head in the fabrics.
Clean, warm, and comfortable for the first time in years, it didn’t take him long to slip into the most peaceful rest he’d had since he’d lost his flock.
——————————
A few days passed in much the same pattern. Cody would go to school, Buzzsaw would be left alone, and then the boy would return and spend the rest of the day talking with him. The avian never responded, content to listen and learn all he could about this world and the species that dominated it. Things fell into a routine, and he came to be comfortable in it. He even stopped minding the way Cody would touch him and stroke his plating as he talked.
And then the routine changed. Cody came to him after school one day and told him he wanted to have a “movie night”. Apparently, he believed that showing Buzzsaw human entertainment would be a good way for the Cassette to learn about human culture. The avian made no protest. Cody talked to him for the afternoon, then went to have his nightly meal with his family. After that though, he returned for the “movie night”, enlisting the aid of Boulder to move Buzzsaw’s crate in front of a large vid screen.
Cody then joined him on top of the crate, settling into the nest of blankets and wrapping himself in one of his own. He was dressed in clothing that he informed Buzzsaw was called “pajamas”. Then, the movie started and the avian let himself be distracted story unfolding on the screen.
The movie was about two humans under a curse, one who turned into a creature called a wolf by the day and the other who turned into a hawk by night. It was a fairly simple story, and while Buzzsaw certainly found some of the attitudes of the characters to be irritatingly soft he could understand the appeal. He might even say he enjoyed the movie. It was fun. Maybe human entertainment wasn’t as bad as he thought.
And then Cody put on a movie that he said was “animated”, and Buzzsaw was very quickly insulted. The movie was about living cars, except they had no other form to transform into. The main character was a cocky, irritating fool, the tow-truck was the most annoying creature he’d ever been forced to watch, and the mentor was a smug, pompous aft. Buzzsaw hated every character in the movie. If that wasn’t enough, even the setting was insulting.
“What the frag.” he hissed. “How is this garbage supposed to be entertaining? There’s no way those insufferable creatures would have successfully built a civilization. They lack any appendages that would allow them to hold, build, or invent anything. Temporary gripping attachments don’t count, those lack dexterity. Primus, those things would have all died out within the first few generations of their species existence. They certainly should have.”
The movie was paused, and Buzzsaw turned his help to Cody to find the reason. He saw the human grinning brightly, looking thrilled. His plating bristled, and he narrowed his optics.
“What.” he snapped.
“You finally talked.” Cody was beaming.
Buzzsaw shuttered his optics, tilting his helm. Ah. So he had. “Did you think I couldn’t?” he demanded.
“No.” Cody shook his head, smiling. “I knew you could. I didn’t want to push to make you talk to me before you were ready though.”
The avian paused, staring uncomprehendingly. That meant that Cody hadn’t actually thought of him as a simple minded beast. He’d known Buzzsaw was more than that. And he hadn’t tried to force his will on him to make him speak before he wanted to. He had been content to wait. Seemingly as long as he needed to, if Buzzsaw understood the subtext of this conversation correctly.
“Why?” he asked wearily.
“You deserve to be treated with respect.” Cody said seriously. “Just because you look like a bird and don’t have a vehicle mode doesn’t mean you aren’t deserving of being treated like an individual with your own thoughts and feelings. It would have been wrong to push my own wants on you. I want to help you get better. That means going at your pace.”
Buzzsaw twitched. “Many Cybertronians would not agree with you. They would argue I am little more than a beast and thus deserve to be treated as one.” he paused. “My pace?”
“Then it’s a good thing we aren’t on Cybertron, isn’t it?” Cody pointed out. “And yeah. Your pace. I want to help you recover from the things you’ve experienced and discover your own path, discover the things you want to do and the life you want to live. But I know that sort of recovery won’t be immediate, and it may not even be as fast as I want it to be. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s your recovery, not mine. So we go at your pace.”
Buzzsaw stared at the organic for a long moment. “…I don’t understand you.” he said.
Cody smiled. “That’s alright. As long as you understand I want to help.”
He stared for a beat longer, then grumbled and turned back to the movie. He needed to process this. Cody seemed to understand he was done talking, because the infernal movie started up again. Buzzsaw wasn’t paying attention, though. Instead, he was lost in thought, turning over the things he’d learned.
He didn’t notice as the movie ended, and another one started. He did feel it, however, when halfway through the next move is a slight weight settled against his side. He looked down to see Cody had fallen into his own recharge and had slumped against Buzzsaw’s side in the process. The avian didn’t move to wake him. He stared at the slumbering human for a long beat, then heaved a sigh and lowered his helm to rest it on the lip of his makeshift nest. He refocused his optics on the bid screen, paying half attention to the new movie playing. It was something about singing cats. Buzzsaw wouldn’t pretend to understand.
He relaxed, Cody’s warmth curled against his side, and his optics dimming slowly as recharge crept up on him. By the time the movie ended, it had claimed him completely, and he and his odd little companion both slept on peacefully as the credits rolled.
Neither of them woke as Chief Burns came down to retrieve Cody. He paused when he saw the scene, and he turned off the TV, dimmed the lights, and left the sleeping pair to their rest.
As Buzzsaw slept on, his hardened spark cracked just a little. Maybe there was hope for him after all.
——————————
Buzzsaw was watching Cody. He did that a lot as of late. The little human still talked to him a lot, though the avian didn’t always talk back. Most of the time he was content to listen. In the past few days, he’d learned a lot about the odd little organic. In that time, his legs had also fully healed, and his nest had been moved to the floor and tucked into a corner of the bunker so he could maneuver on his own. His wing was still injured, but even if it wasn’t his turbines and anti-gravs were still disabled.
Right now, Cody was quiet. The boy was sitting on a box a bit away from his nest, working one something he’d called “homework”. Judging by the frustrated expression he wore, he was having some degree of difficulty. His curiosity piqued, Buzzsaw stood and stepped out of his nest, walking over to see what the human was working on. He sidled up behind him, tilting his helm to peer over his shoulder.
Oh. It was math. Buzzsaw could work with this.
“You’re missing a two.” he grunted.
Cody paused. “What?” he asked, turning to look at the again standing over him.
“You’re missing a two.” he repeated. “In the third problem. You’re missing a two. That’s why the first part of your answer isn’t matching up with the second.”
Cody blinked, then turned back and looked over his work. He made a noise of triumph, perking up and correcting his work. Then he returned his attention to the Cassette.
“Thanks, Buzzsaw!”
He only grunted, helm cocking sharply.
Cody smiled, used to his non-verbal communication by now.
“So you know some math?” he asked.
“Sure.” he Buzzsaw grunted, folding his legs and settling down. “Laserbeak and I never received a formal education; Cassettes weren’t allowed to. But Soundwave taught us some things after he bound us to him. He wanted us to have a greater knowledge of a variety of fields.”
“Laserbeak? Is that another Cassette?”
“Yes.” Buzzsaw paused, his optics dimming. “My sister. My twin, actually.”
Cody sat up, eyes wide. “You guys can have siblings?”
“Yes. It’s a rare occurrence, but it happens. Though Soundwave did have another set of Cassette twins besides us, too.”
The human stared, then seemed to realize something. “She’s…gone, isn’t she?”
“No.” he huffed. “If she was, I would have felt her loss in my spark. But she left me when Soundwave did. I cannot entirely blame her. If he told her to leave, she would have had to obey. Still, it does sting.” Buzzsaw admitted, unable to keep the bitterness from his voice.
“I’m sorry.”
And Buzzsaw didn’t understand, but the human did seem genuinely upset on his behalf. He sighed, shaking his helm to get rid of the memories.
“It’s whatever.” he grunted. “It happened. I can’t change it. Gotta live with it.”
“You miss her.”
Buzzsaw froze, his optics snapping on to the human. He stared, then couldn’t stop himself from slumping. “I so. I miss all of them. Primus help me, but I really do miss them.” he hissed, hating himself for it.
Cody put a hand on his chest. “I’m sorry they left you. You didn’t deserve it.”
He went still, then jerked his gaze away and focused on the paper. “Yeah. I suppose. But you have work to finish, don’t you? I can help.”
He seemed to understand that the avian was done with that topic of conversation, because the human dropped his hand and nodded, returning his own attention to the paper. “Sure. Thanks!”
Buzzsaw scoffed. “Don’t thank me yet. Now, let me see those problems. Tell me how you think you need to solve them, I’ll say something if your approach needs an adjustment.”
——————————
Buzzsaw was alone when he woke up. That struck him as odd, especially since his chronometer cheerfully blinked up on his HUD to inform him that it was only midday. He’d checked twice. He dismissed the notice with a grumble, hopping out of his nest and wandering around the bunker. His wings were folded away, the damaged one finally having fully healed the day before. It was a relief to be able to relax it fully now.
He looked around, sending out a ping of his sensors, and picked up the signals of the Rescue Bots above him. He walked over to the large pad they used as an elevator, tapping the console with his beak and letting the platform lift him up. As soon as it stopped, he was walking out of the open doors of the building he’d been informed was called a “firehouse”. He picked up on some unidentifiable noises, following them to what ended up being a court for some sort of ball game. The Burns family and the Rescue Bots were all playing. After a moment of observation, Buzzsaw realized the objective of the game was to get the small ball into the small hoop that the opposite team was guarding. It reminded him just a little bit of Cube.
He made his way over to where a bench was sitting to the side of the court, hopping up onto it. It was just low enough he could manage that much without his wings. Then he turned his attention back to the game, watching curiously as the ball was tossed around. After a few minutes, a stray toss sent it in his direction. Buzzsaw tilted his helm up, catching the ball on the tip of his beak and bouncing it once, then he tipped his head, letting it roll to the top of his beak before he tossed his head to send the ball back towards the others.
Blades caught it, smiling when he saw the avian. “Good morning, Buzzsaw.” He greeted.
The Cassette nodded, turning his attention to Cody as the boy padded up to him.
“You’re awake!” he smiled. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I didn’t expect you to wake up so soon from your nap.”
“It’s fine.” Buzzsaw dismissed. “What are you playing?”
“Burns Ball! It’s version of a popular earth game we adapted for our own rules!” Cody said brightly. “Do you want to play a game?”
“My legs aren’t as efficient as all of yours and I can’t use my talons to grip when I’m on them.” he answered dryly.
Cody frowned, considering. “What if you could fly?”
“Is that really a good idea?” Kade interrupted.
Cody shrugged, then turned back to the avian. “Are you going to leave if we give you back your flight?”
“Where would I go?” Buzzsaw scoffed. “I refuse to return to the Decepticons, and I’d sooner eat my own thrusters than join the Autobots.”
Cody blinked, then beamed. It as clear he understood what Buzzsaw was really saying. It made him want to groan. He was getting soft. When had he gotten so easy to read? And by a tiny organic, no less.
“You won’t leave.” he translated. Then he turned to Blades. “Can you do it?” he asked hopefully.
Blades hummed, already walking over. “Are you sure?
“I’m sure.” Cody confirmed.
“I’m not going anywhere.” Buzzsaw offered in a low drawl. “Cody wanted to fix me, so now he’s stuck with me.”
Blades and Cody both giggled, but then copter bot got to work. The Cassette didn’t move as his turbines and anti-gravs were reconnected with his main flight system, and then Blades was stepping back.
Buzzsaw stood, wings spreading fully. He crouched, then leapt up and activated his turbines. They roared to life, his anti-gravs clicking on, and he let out a victorious shriek as he flew in a wide circle around the ball court. After another few circles and dives, he glided down to land next to Cody.
“So.” he hummed. “How about a ride?”
Cody jerked in surprise, and grinned. “Seriously?”
“In case you haven’t noticed, I lack hands. I have no way of holding on to the ball, and my talons and beak would pop it.” he sniffed. “You’d be doing me a favor, honestly.
“Noble!” Cody breathed.
Buzzsaw had learned what Cody meant with that odd phrase in the last few weeks. He lowered his helm and bent his legs, letting the human clamber in to his back. He had a set of thrusters lower down on his back, but unlike Seekers, Jets, or Shuttles his only served the purpose of granting him a speed boost in the air. He didn’t actually need them to get airborne.
Once Cody was seated securely at the base of his neck, Buzzsaw straightened and took to the air. He circled the court, and with a toss of the ball, the game began.
——————————
The rescue missions weren’t unusual. At least a couple times a week, something happened on the island that required the whole team to mobilize. Most of the time though, it was simple. An earth cat stuck in a tree, a lost hiker, a damaged traffic light. The type of thing that only required one or two of the Rescue Bots to handle. Today, it seemed, would not be one of those times.
It had started out peacefully. The Rescue Bots had been out of the bunker, taking care of various things around the island. Boulder was on a “nature walk” with Blades and their partners. Heatwave was with Kade at the school teaching a fire safety class. Chase and his partner were out on a patrol. Cody had remained behind, and he and Buzzsaw were seated on the couch of the lounge watching what the human had called “cable TV”. Buzzsaw didn’t get the point.
Then the program they’d been watching had been taken over by a news report. There was a massive landslide in the mountain that was threatening to bury the whole town. Immediately, the rescue alarm sounded and Cody was racing to the command center. Buzzsaw stayed where he was, as he usually did when an emergency occurred. On the screen, he watched the chaos unfold. Thankfully, the human reporter was there with his camera to record everything.
It didn’t take long for the Rescue Bots to get to the site. It seemed to be progressing well, from what the again observed. Then Blades flew too low, and a stray rock took out his tail rotor. He was forced to land, and the team lost their aerial view. Blades could still help the team on the ground, but without proper “eyes in the sky” as Cody had called it, they would doubtless miss things.
Buzzsaw didn’t really think before he hopped off the couch. He flew to the lift, tapping the console that raised it, and as soon as he had space he was flying up and out of the firehouse. He flew around to where he knew the command center was, noting that the main window was open. Good. He landed on the ledge, optics locking on the screens Cody was viewing. Yes, things were definitely going badly.
“Just hang on, everyone! I’ve called Optimus, he said he’ll be here as soon as he can!”
“Yo don’t need Prime. You need an aerial view. That’s why you’re missing things.”
Cody whirled around. “Buzzsaw!” he cried out. “That’s not possible. Blades is down and there’s no way he can fly with his tail rotor damaged.”
“I know.” the avian straightened. “I’ll go.”
Cody froze. “Buzzsaw, are you sure?”
Before the Cassette could respond, the comm. burst to life. Clearly the others had heard their discussion.
“There’s no time to debate this! Lives are at stake! Cody, do you trust Buzzsaw?” Chief Burns demanded.
“Yeah, Dad. I do.”
“Then give him a communicator and send him out here. He’s right. We need eyes in the sky.”
Cody looked up at him, then nodded. He dug around a drawer, then walked over to Buzzsaw with a comm. unit in hand. He let it magnetize itself to the side of the avian’s helm, and quickly returned to the command console. Buzzsaw would definitely need the comm. His internal comm. system was still disabled. He didn’t say anything to the human, and instead turned and took to the skies.
It didn’t take him long to reach the disaster site. Immediately, he could see where he was needed.
“Heatwave, around the corner from you there’s a boulder baring down on a human couple.” he said sharply.
The firetruck replied with an acknowledgment and went to take care of it. Buzzsaw didn’t pay any mind. He was already focusing on the next issue that needed addressing.
“Boulder, mud and stone are about to take out those houses behind you.”
The bulldozer quickly went to take care of it, digging a trench in front of the houses to keep them from being hit. Buzzsaw moved on.
“Chase, down the mountain from you there’s a human youngling trying to outrun the landslide.”
The police car was quick to move and save the child. Buzzsaw didn’t pay much more attention after that. He couldn’t afford to. He needed all his focus on finding the smaller emergencies within the larger landslide before they could happen. Cody trusted him. He was the first in many years to do so. Buzzsaw refused to let him down.
The boy had earned his loyalty, though damn him if he didn’t know when. He didn’t intend to disappoint the one who had so much faith that he could be more than what he had been. Failure here wasn’t an option.
It never was.
——————————
By the end of the whole ordeal, Buzzsaw was reeling. He’d been part of a team again, even if only temporarily. It had been…nice. He hadn’t realized how much he’d missed it. But now the job was done, and he was on his way back to the firehouse. The others had remained behind to do cleanup work, and apparently Chief Burns would also need to explain his presence to the political leader of the town with an excuse.
He made his way back to the firehouse, his processor starting to calm after the excitement. As he neared, his sensors picked a Cybertronian signal in the courtyard where the basketball court was. It only took a moment to realize who it was. Cody had called in the Prime for help, but that help was no longer needed. That didn’t mean the message had gotten to Prime in time, though.
Sure enough, when the firehouse came into view Buzzzsaw saw Optimus Prime standing in the courtyard. Cody was at his pedes. The avian flew down, alighting on the back of the hoop in front of the larger bot. He would ordinarily have landed next to Cody, but he’d spent too long seeing the Prime as an enemy to put himself on the ground in front of the large mech.
“Buzzsaw.” Prime greeted. “I was told you provided aid to the Rescue Bots.”
Buzzsaw didn’t say anything.
“Tell me, what would you do if you were able to leave?”
“I can.” he snapped. “I’ve got flight. I’ve had it for a while.”
Prime’s lips twitched. “So you have.” he agreed. “Then what are your intentions?”
“Cody decided to get into my business. As far as I’m concerned, he’s stuck with me now, whether he likes it or not.” he scoffed.
Prime’s lips twitched again. Clearly, he had been able to read between the lines to understand what Buzzsaw was saying.
“In that case,” he rumbled. “How would you like to join the Rescue Bots here on Griffin Rock?”
Buzzsaw shuttered his optics. “What.” he deadpanned.
“Would you like to become a Rescue Bot, Buzzsaw?”
“I don’t believe that’s up to me, Prime.” he pointed out. “Or you, for that matter. You don’t lead the team.” he sneered.
“Oh, for Primus’s sake.” Heatwave’s voice came over the comm.
Oh. That was right. Buzzsaw was still hooked into the team’s communications system. The Prime must have opened the previously silent comm. line to Heatewve for at least part of the conversation.
“Choose for yourself, Buzzsaw.” Heatwave continued. “If you want to, we’ll all be happy to have you. You proved to be a good teammate today. No one will have a problem with it. Pit, I’m the one who told Optimus to make the offer before you got there.” Then the comm. clicked off.
“Oh.” Buzzsaw said.
“Indeed.” Prime seemed amused, the fragger. Buzzsaw hoped he got slagged. “What Will it be, then?”
The avian cocked his head sharply. “Ugh.” he made a noise of disgust. “You know what? Fine. The soft idiots need all the help they can get.”
Prime chuckled, then lifted his hand. The armor in his palm shifted, and then a laser was shooting out and hitting Buzzsaw’s chest. There was no pain from it, and he watched as the Rescue Bot badge was put on his armor. The laser stopped, and the Cassette spent a moment staring at the new mark emblazoned on his chestplate.
He looked up when he heard Prime move. “I must leave now, I’m afraid. I am needed elsewhere.” the mech said, inclining his head towards them. Then he walked to the road, folded into his alt-mode, and drove off.
Buzzsaw stared after him, and after a moment he fluttered down to land next to Cody. The human smiled up at him, then lowered his gaze to the new badge on his chest. He lifted a hand to press it over the black lines, looking pleased.
“You’re sure?” he said softly.
Buzzsaw scoffed. “I wouldn’t have agreed if I wasn’t sure. Like I told Prime. You made the decision to get involved with me, so now you’re stuck with me. I’m not leaving, no matter how much you want me to.” he said, his sneer lacking all its usual bite. He paused. “Besides,” he continued, his voice just a notch softer. “You really aren’t all that bad.”
Cody blinked once, then beamed.
Buzzsaw had to look away, feeling almost embarrassed. He hadn’t dared to hope for so many years, but it seemed Primus had deigned to show him kindness after all.
He’d finally found a new roost.
———————————————————————————————————
Well. That’s done! That was long. It took me multiple days to write. But! It’s done!
I had fun with it. Buzzsaw is a grumpy asshole and Cody is very indulgent of his dramatics. And yes, I made him capable of speech. I know he and the Laserbeak can talk in the comics, so.
Also, please excuse my liberal use of headcanons for some of this. Anyway. I hope y’all liked it! I’m sorry it took so long to get out.
Until next time, folks!

Boss Dad™️
[Not edited]
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Summary: We love when you have an overprotective dad that just so happens to also be your boyfriend’s boss
Pairing: Hotch x son!reader, Spencer Reid x male!reader, Jemily
Requested by anon: “Hi, I wanted to know if you could do a Dr. Reid x male reader, where the reader is Hotch’s son, and his father became kinda overprotective since his mother was killed (Idk if it’s right, my English is not that good)”
⚠Warnings⚠ Slight angst, Spence fluff, overprotective dad! Hotch, Spence comforts reader, bad writing, spoilers, I think that’s all
a/n: this is my first x male reader, and I loved writing this, so thank you anon. Also, apologies if the spacing gets weird, I wrote this in my notes and just copied and pasted lol.
All of Y/N’s life, he’s had certain...troubles in his relationships. It’s not that he has any trouble finding partners, no, it’s more of my-dad-is-an-overprotective-profiler kind of problem. Ya see he loves his dad, that’s the unquestionable thing. But his dad is, as mentioned before, very protective of his eldest son. Especially after what happened to Haley. He couldn't stand to lose another person he loved.
So he was always wary when Y/N brought someone home. Always ended in the same way. They’d get scared away by getting their secrets exposed and when they left he’d say something along the lines of, “I didn’t like them.” with nothing else.
Now after a certain point, Y/N got tired of trying to reason with his dad. So he just gave up on dating. Until he met a certain Doctor Spencer Reid.
Spencer was a light in his life. The person he never knew he’d been dreaming of. Spencer filled in every empty feeling Y/N ever had. They were quite a pair.
Y/N was studying social sciences and psychology, so he had quite a bit on his plate, and Spencer was out on cases a lot. So the number of official dates they had was slim, but their love for each other wasn’t any different. Hotch had only recently discovered their relationship. And boy was he not happy. He tried to not express it or take it out on YN, but Y/N knows Hotch better than anyone. He could tell it was eating at him, and he wasn’t sure what to do.
“I should visit dad at the BAU. He didn’t bring a lunch anyway so I might as well bring him something...plus I get to surprise Spence.” Y/N mumbled, smiling to himself at the thought. He had a couple of days off school, so he decided to spend them with Jack and his dad. ”He did mention today was a paperwork day, so I shouldn't have to worry about him being out of town.” He said to himself as he grabbed his keys.
One drive to the BAU later, Y/N gets out of his car and makes his way to the entrance. He goes in and pulls out his visitor’s pass that he received from his dad. The security team there knew him pretty well, he visited a lot when he had free days. “Heya Mark, how are the kids?” Y/N asked as he waited for his bag to be checked. “Oh! Andrea got the lead in the school’s play, and she wanted me to thank you for helping her rehearse her lines. Micah is doing just fine, he enjoys soccer practice.” Y/N smiled as he grabbed his bag. “Be sure to tell me about any of Andrea’s performances or Micah’s games!”
“Will do!”
Y/N laughed as he walked towards the elevator. He presses the button for floor six and takes a breath as the elevator ascends. He finally reached the correct floor, and couldn't help but smile as he strolled towards the bullpen, where he immediately sighted Emily. ”Y/N! My favorite Hotchner! How have you been?”
”Oh please Emily we all know that Jack is the favorite Hotchner.” Y/N chuckled and hugged her. ”I’ve been alright, but school is kicking my ass, as usual. How are you and JJ?” Emily smiles warmly at his question. ”Amazing. We just finished unpacking the rest of JJ’s boxes yesterday. She’s officially moved in!”
”I’m so happy for you guys! Anyway, is my dad in his office?” Emily glanced towards Hotch’s door. ”Yep! Where else would he be?” The two laughed together before Y/N said his goodbye and started his trek to his dad's office. He knocked on the door and opened it after hearing a small ”come in” from the other side. Aaron looked up from the file he was working on to see who was at the door. ”Y/N? What're you doing here?” Y/N closed the door. ”Well, I did come here to see you, but I also brought you the lunch you probably didn't realize you left.” Y/N walked over and put the food on Aaron’s desk. The door opened again, and this time, it was Spencer.
“Hey Hotch, I had a question about- Y/N?” Spencer examined him in surprise, not anticipating him to be in his dad’s office. ”Heya Spence.” Y/N grinned, walking to him and engulfing him in a hug. Hotch couldn't help but slightly grimace at the exchange. Y/N saw this, making him wither a bit. Spencer noticed. ”Um- Spence- why don't you meet me in the break room and we can talk a bit over a cup of coffee, yeah?” Spencer pulled away from him, looked into his eyes, gave his hand a small squeeze, and walked out.
Y/N let out a sigh. ”Y/N. You know how I feel about this. You know how our work is- it's dangerous-” Y/N cut him off to finish the statement. ”- because it can compel the unsubs to come after me to get to him. I know.” Y/N looked over at his dad. “Which is exactly why-“
“No, dad.” Aaron was taken aback. “Is that the only reason you don’t like me being with Spencer? Dad, just me being your son puts me in danger. Being friends with the whole BAU team puts me at risk. No, that’s not the real reason, because if that were the case, you would’ve never shown me to the team at all.”  Y/N stood his ground, holding in his pending tears as he tried to stay calm. ”Spencer makes me feel safe. He takes care of me. The only reason you don't want us to be a thing is that you're scared that I'll leave and what happened to mom will repeat itself!” Y/N took a shaky breath in, storming out the door with tears running down his face. He knew he went too far, but right now all he needed was Spencer.
Y/N hurried his way to the break room to avoid being seen by anyone in the bullpen.  Y/N strolled into the break room, where Spencer had just finished making them both coffee. Spencer looked over to him and his smile immediately turned into a look of worry. ”Y/N what’s-” He was cut off by the strong hug that was given to him. He instantly returned the embrace, gently rubbing Y/N’s back and giving him a forehead kiss as a form of comfort. Y/N eventually settled down and moved back from Spencer a bit. ”Can we- you think you can afford to postpone your paperwork for a bit babe? I kinda just-  I need to talk about this with you.” Spencer moved some hair out of Y/N’s face. He pecked his lips and gently grabbed Y/N’s hand. ”Ok, my love.”
-Meanwhile, in the office of big boss dad-
Hotch did not expect that to say the least. He knew Y/N would be upset, but he didn't think he would have lashed out as he did. When he watched Y/N slam the door on him, the weight of what was said hit him. Y/N thought he didn’t trust him? Thought that he didn’t want him to be happy? That’s the opposite of what he wanted. He wanted nothing but the best for his oldest son. He had to think to himself for a while. Was he doing the right thing? Or was he just trying to keep history from repeating itself?
“I was too hard on him...he’s a grown adult, he can make his own decisions.” Hotch thought out loud. He sighed.
He needed to talk with Y/N. Hotch walked out of his office, surprising everyone in the bullpen, as he rarely came out of his office on a paperwork day. He made his way to the break room and was about to say something when he heard Y/N talking.
”Spence I just- I don't know what to do. I don't know why he's so hesitant to let us be a thing I mean- I wouldn't be as upset if it were anyone else but- it's you. He knows you. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me- especially after- especially after what happened to mom. I just- I don't want to lose you.” Hotch heard it all. He watched as Spencer easily calmed him down. He saw the love as the two looked at each other. He knew he was mistaken. He had to fix it.
        -6:30 pm, Hotchner household-
Aaron returns from work, take-out food in his hands. As soon as he sets the bags on the dinner table, Jack comes running. ”Daddy!” Aaron smiles as he scoops up his son into his arms. Y/N walks towards the table and looks at his dad. ”Hey Jack, why don't you go play in your room for a few more minutes while Y/N and I set up the food ok?” Aaron set jack back down on the floor and ruffled his hair. ”Ok!” Jack ran upstairs, leaving Aaron and Y/N alone.
”Y/N I-” ”Dad I-” They both started. Aaron sighed and made eye contact with Y/N. ”Listen, dad, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get so mad at you, and I know I went too far with what I said about mom. I know you have your reasons and-” ”Y/N. It's ok. Aaron cut him off, putting a hand on his shoulder. ”I know that I've been hard on you when it comes to you dating- especially after Haley...but I realized this today. First of all, you're a grown man now. I should let you date who you want to. I trust you, and I know that you can take care of yourself. And another thing, I realized how good Spencer is for you. While I shouldn't have been spying on you two, I saw how comfortable and safe you felt with him. I saw love between the two of you. I would never wish to be the reason you are kept from your happiness. So, you have every right to stay with him.”
Y/N had tears in his eyes. ”You mean it?” He asked. ”Yes, completely.” Y/N got closer and tightly hugged his dad. ”Thank you...” He mumbled into his dad’s shirt.
They sat there for a bit, just comfortably embracing one another. ”Who knew big scary boss dad could be so soft?” Y/N remarked, getting a laugh from both of them. ”Anyway, let's get the food set up for real before Jack comes back.”
That night, Y/N texted Spencer, saying all was well.

askjdlfh ok i’ve read too many speculation fics this past week and now you’ve all got me speculating and i need to stop bc i’m gonna get my hopes up too much lmao but anyway in the meantime here’s this bc i couldn’t help myself
4x13/14 speculation-ish, 1.6k
title: first week - vera blue
*
Buck sits in the waiting room, hands clasped between his knees, jiggling his foot as he stares at nothing. He’s lost track of how long he’s been here but it’s been long enough for the room to fill and empty at least three times, long enough that one of the nurses had offered to get him a cup of coffee from the cafeteria, long enough that he can’t feel the blood dried under his fingernails anymore.
“Buck!”
His gaze snaps up to the doorway and something inside him crumples at the sight of Christopher pulling himself into the room on his crutches. Carla is standing behind him with a hand on his shoulder but Buck hardly spares her a glance before he’s bolting out of his seat and crouching down in front of Christopher.
“Is my dad o-okay?” he asks, a tremor beneath his voice that makes his lip wobble and makes Buck want to bundle him up in his arms and never let him go.
“Hey, listen,” Buck says soothingly, hands flitting across Christopher’s shoulders before reaching up to cup his cheeks. “Your dad got hurt today but he’s in surgery right now and the doctors are gonna tell me when he’s finished.” He searches Christopher’s expression, tries to figure out the best thing to say to make it better. He knows nothing can though, not really, so he settles on, “You wanna wait with me?”
Christopher’s breath hitches and his eyes fill with tears and it’s all Buck can do to pull him into his arms – if only so Chris won’t see the tears Buck has been steadfastly trying to hold back ever since he got here.
He picks Christopher up, meeting Carla’s pitying gaze over his shoulder as she carefully slips the crutches off Christopher’s arms.
“I called Isabel and Pepa,” he tells her. “Told them I’d let them know when we hear anything; there’s no point in them coming down until then.”
She nods, pursing her lips. “Are you sure you don’t want me to keep him a while longer?”
Christopher picks his head up off Buck’s shoulder at that, arms clinging tighter around Buck’s neck. “I wanna stay with Buck. I wanna wait for dad.”
“It’s okay,” Buck murmurs, rubbing over his back and giving Carla a tired smile. “I’m sure. I’ll call if I need you though.”
She squeezes his arm, before passing him the crutches and pressing a careful hand to Christopher’s back. “I’ll see you tomorrow, sweetheart,” she says quietly. “Call me when you know something,” she adds to Buck and he nods.
When she’s gone he carries Christopher over to his chair. He considers putting Chris down in the seat beside him before deciding he probably needs the comfort as much as Buck does. So he sits down and keeps Christopher in his lap, rearranging him so he can sit more comfortably with his cheek pressed against Buck’s chest. Buck runs a hand through his hair, kisses his forehead, and tries to stop thinking about one of the last things Eddie had said to him.
“Take- Buck, take care of Christopher, okay? I don’t- he’ll want to stay with you-“
“Eddie, stop. He’s not- you’re not- you’re gonna be fine, okay? So stop- stop making plans. Just hold on, alright?”
Buck shakes his head, squeezing his eyes shut and taking a steadying breath. Fuck, he can’t lose him. He can’t- they’re only just- he can’t do this without Eddie. Work, life, whatever. He needs him here.
“Buck,” Christopher says quietly, fingers playing with one of the strings on Buck’s hoodie.
“Yeah, buddy?”
“Can we play I Spy?”
Buck’s breath catches and he presses his face into Christopher’s hair, allows himself the briefest moment to crack, before he nods. “Yeah,” he says, voice raw with unshed tears. “Yeah. You go first.”
*
The rest of the team arrive in stages. First Bobby, sitting in the chair right next to Buck’s and rubbing his back while Buck tries in vain to rock Christopher to sleep. Then Hen with coffees and a juice for Chris. Then Chim with the promise that he and Maddie can switch off taking care of Jee-Yun is Buck wants her instead. That very nearly does Buck in but he manages to stifle back the sob at the last minute.
Together, they wait but even the low hum of their conversations isn’t enough to drown out the sound of gunshots rattling around in Buck’s brain.
It should’ve been him.
As soon as they’d heard the shots Eddie had pushed him towards the other firefighter from the 133 and he’d pulled Buck behind the fire truck. Eddie hadn’t had a chance to get to safety.
It should’ve been Buck.
He’s not the one with a kid, the one with so much to come back for. It’s not fair.
“Evan Buckley?”
His head shoots up and he locates the doctor standing in the doorway. Christopher is dozing in his arms by now but he manages to stand without jostling him too much. “That’s me.”
The rest of the team stand with him, a silent bubble of support, as the doctor looks between him and the chart in his hand.
“You’re Eddie Diaz’s emergency contact,” he says and Buck nods, absently aware of the way Hen and Chim’s heads jerk to him in surprise.
“He’s out of surgery,” the doctor continues. “We were able to remove the bullet; it thankfully didn’t hit anything vital. He lost a lot of blood but we’ve given him a transfusion. They’re bringing him down to his room now; I can take you to see him when he’s settled.”
Buck feels himself deflate, is convinced he’d collapse if he wasn’t still holding Christopher, if Bobby didn’t immediately grip his shoulder. “Th-thank you,” he stammers out, breath rushing out of him all at once.
The doctor leaves and Buck blinks tears out his eyes as he ducks to whisper in Christopher’s ear. “Chris, hey, Did you hear that? Your dad’s okay.”
*
An hour later Buck finds himself in Eddie’s room, staring at him in the bed like if he looks away for too long he’ll disappear. Christopher is standing in front of him, holding Eddie’s hand, and Buck wonders if he should take him out of the room, if this might be too upsetting for him but then Chris says, “Can I get on the bed with him?” and Buck knows there’s nothing in the world that could make Christopher leave.
He also knows he should probably say no but honestly, if Buck didn’t still have one last shred of self-restraint he’s pretty sure he’d be the one climbing onto the bed with Eddie, hand on his chest to feel him breathing. So he picks Chris up under his arms and carefully lifts him onto the mattress, making sure he doesn’t disturb any of the wires.
“Careful not to move anything, buddy,” he says but Christopher only shifts enough to lie down, curling into Eddie’s side and letting his head rest on Eddie’s bicep. Buck feels a fresh wave of tears come at the sight but he doesn’t feel so bad about it now that Christopher isn’t looking at him anymore. He scoots his chair closer, picking up the hand Christopher had been holding earlier and linking his fingers with Eddie’s.
His grip is completely slack, completely unlike earlier when he’d squeezed Buck’s hand so tight right before he’d lost consciousness. Buck tries not to think about it.
He sits there long enough for Christopher to fall asleep again, long enough for him to forget the rest of the world is still moving outside the room, until eventually the hand in his twitches.
He blinks, looking down before he flits his gaze to Eddie’s face. He watches with bated breath as Eddie slowly comes to, eyelids flickering before finally opening properly. Eddie notices Christopher first and Buck swallows around the lump in his throat at the way Eddie’s entire being softens at the sight of his son, the way he closes his eyes again briefly like he’s memorising the feeling. When he opens his eyes the second time they find Buck and that’s as much as Buck can take before the emotion he’s been holding back for the last few hours comes flooding to the surface.
“Hi,” he whispers, voice thick as too many tears escape at once.
Eddie takes a breath and wets his lips, fingers twitching against Buck’s again. “Hi.” His voice is hoarse and gravelly but it’s Eddie’s voice and he’s okay and Buck can finally breathe again.
“I missed you.” And it sounds stupid but it’s true. Eddie’s eyes close once more and there’s the faintest hint of a smile on his lips.
“Can’t get rid of me that easy,” he mumbles, returning his gaze to Buck and he just- he looks so open, so unguarded in a way that Buck only rarely gets to see in their quietest moments.
He picks Eddie’s hand up, holding it between his own as he props his elbows on the mattress behind Christopher. He presses his lips to Eddie’s knuckles, doesn’t think about the implications other than needing him closer, other than needing to comfort him. “Thanks for coming back.”
“Thanks for not letting me go.”
Buck thinks of the moments before his hospital. Of his hand pressing against Eddie’s stomach to keep pressure on the wound, of his other hand touching Eddie’s face trying to keep him awake, of pulling him into his arms in those terrifying few seconds between Eddie losing consciousness and the ambulance arriving. Of holding his hand right down to the very last minute when they stepped into the hospital and Eddie had to be wheeled away.
And now, at his hand in Buck’s again, right where it’s supposed to be.
There’s more to say about it, more they could confess right now, but there’s time. They have time.
So Buck only nods, lacing his fingers more firmly with Eddie’s and offering him a smile he hopes says everything.
Eddie smiles back and it’s enough for now.

Okay, so you said I could send an ask for headcanons about the childhoods of some specific merc(s)... I think I would really like to read your headcanons about Soldier’s and Engineer’s childhood :)
Thanks in advance and I hope your well.
Ooooh…I’ve been waiting for this! And thank you for being specific and not just saying “the rest of them.” Sometimes I get overwhelmed with nine specific mercs to write for. Your specifics are much appreciated.
****************
Soldier:
Soldier doesn’t talk very much about his childhood - whether it’s because something happened or he just doesn’t remember it, no one can tell. It’s nowhere in his file, either…he refused to do anything except tell fantastic tales of a fictional youth.
However, in a rare streak of almost lucidity, he spouted off the entirety of his younger years, much to the team’s surprise. Usually, if anyone asked directly, he changed the subject.
But now he described everything in vivid detail. And, with a bit of research from Miss Pauling, everything fell into place.
Apparently he had been born in a small military town in Georgia. His father was overseas, leaving he and his mother alone in their small yellow house.
In order to make ends meet, his mother worked at a nearby factory, mostly leaving Soldier to fend for himself and the house.
“Can you be a big, strong soldier like daddy for me?”
Soldier would always agree, finding his own food, his own entertainment, and his own friends. No matter what happened, he never bothered his mom. If anything, his job was to protect her.
That’s why, when his stomach started hurting and his arms and legs ached, he said nothing about it.
When he forgot the chores he was supposed to do and even the names of his friends, he didn’t bring it up.
When he felt tired all the time and some days could barely get out of bed, he just chalked it up to laziness like his mother did.
It turns out the factory they were next to was polluting the water next to the house with dangerous amounts of lead, which soon overcame Soldier’s immune system of steel.
He could barely remember anything anymore, and he became more and more distraught every day. Sometimes he would forget where he was and run outside, then get lost in the woods, only coming back once he remembered where he was supposed to be.
Soldier began to wear one of his father’s old helmets after his mom commented on his red eyes and the dark circles around them. He didn’t want to worry her. Besides, it helped bring back a few memories if he ever got lost again.
Finally, it got to the point where he didn’t even remember his mother, or his promise to her. He began to wander farther and farther away from home.
One day, he didn’t come back at all.
Out in the world with not a single memory to his name, Soldier wandered far and wide. He usually slept in barns and old, abandoned houses, cut off from most people.
Occasionally, he would find a family that wanted to “raise him as their own,” only to turn him away after finding him too difficult to care for.
He had frequent nightmares, ate little due to his unresolved stomach issues, and could barely walk ten feet without forgetting where he was going.
If he accidentally wandered into the same house twice, he would be chased out with either a broom or a gun - usually the latter.
He became “the demon child” in some counties, and “g*psy kid” in others, due to his long, unkempt hair, hidden eyes, and odd habits.
It even got to the point where Soldier couldn’t sleep on anyone’s property because he would be actively fought off like a wolf or a bear.
His only pleasure was an old movie theater that, as he recovered from his lead poisoning, remembered the location of and frequently snuck into.
The only thing that played were romance movies - which, like many children, Soldier hated - and war movies, which he watched over and over again with starving eyes.
Because of these movies, a single memory from his mother’s house came to him. A woman, tall and muscular from hard labor, giving him a shiny badge to hold, asking him to be a strong soldier like his father.
And thus began his life-long dream of becoming a military officer.
He trained according to what he knew from the films…which was mostly running, doing jumping jacks, and occasionally rolling around in the mud.
This only served to distance him further from his fellow human beings, but he didn’t care. Soldier had a mission, and he was going to do it well.
But the biggest change was his hair.
He had started cutting it off with sharpened rocks, but he was always saving up coins he found for a “proper army cut.”
Finally, he had quite the collection in a dirty mason jar, and marched into the barber shop in his town to ask for a haircut.
The manager was appalled, and at first refused, but Soldier stood his ground.
“Civilian, I’ll have you know that by denying a soldier with a haircut, you are denying America one of its best fighters! I can’t curdle the enemy’s blood looking like a hippie!”
After a short yelling match that, of course, Soldier won, the manager decided it would be in his best interest to comply.
He walked out of that shop with no hair on his head, but a huge grin on his face. Next stop, the ranks.
Soldier went from draft office to draft office, applying for and being denied entrance to the army for his obvious lack of mental stability.
This is when the personal retelling ended, since Soldier became very upset by the memory of his recruitment failures, but Miss Pauling concluded that he just bounced from state to state until Mann Co. found him, quote, “sitting in an alleyway, eating army draft paperwork while sobbing uncontrollably.”
Engineer:
Engineer also never really talks about his childhood, but both Medic and Spy (Spy knows everything about everyone on the team) know that’s for a good reason.
He grew up in a trailer community near an almost ghost town in Texas.
His father was an abusive car mechanic with a mean streak a mile wide and a shop full of failed inventions. His mother wasn’t any better - she was bitter and reclusive, only really coming out of her room to pick a fight with her husband.
However, what Engie lacked in family, he more than made up for in friends.
He had a rag-tag, Rugrats-esque team of pals from all walks of life: Rhapsody, the daughter of a struggling porn star; Tom, the son of two farmers wiped out by blight; Cici, an adopted girl that could barely walk into her trailer without a black eye and a string of slurs; Quinn, the nervous child of a single mother that serves as guidance to the other kids; And Fred, who didn’t seem to have any family, but had become a greaser big brother to all of them.
Together, they explored the desert near the trailer park, pooled their resources to feed and support each other, and used their individual strengths to get through each day.
Engineer, whom everyone affectionately called “Big Dell,” snuck parts from his dad’s workshop for his own creations.
By the time he was twelve, he could make a small, running engine for the soapbox cars his friends frequently raced.
No toy, piece of clothing, glasses, or tool was out of his line of expertise.
One day, though, upon finding that some of his parts were missing, Engineer’s dad gave him a terrible beating that broke a few of his fingers and left a huge gash near his eye.
Since then, he refused to fix, make, or even touch a tool.
He wouldn’t tell anyone what happened, but they could make a pretty good guess, since they knew where the scraps and parts had come from.
The whole group was furious with Engineer’s dad - their Big Dell was funny, smart, and was more loving than every family member they had combined. Even Quinn was red in the face.
They wanted to break into his dad’s workshop and destroy all of his inventions, just to teach him a lesson, but they knew Engineer would take the fall for it.
Instead, they rummaged through trash cans, searched their toy chests, and looked under their trailers to find things Engineer could use.
They waited until his birthday to unveil the massive pile of supplies they had stowed away.
Engineer immediately dropped to his knees and began to cry, and everyone else dogpiled him for a huge hug.
As the creme de la creme, they gave him a pair of welding goggles - the same welding goggles he wears to this day, having modified them so they still fit his growing body.
With his healed fingers and renewed spirit, he made each of them a gift: a toy car for Rhapsody, a skull ring for Fred, a full set of candle wax crayons for Cici, a chewable necklace for Quinn so they wouldn’t chew on their collar, and a mini-planter for Tom.
But Engineer was given the greatest gift - confidence in his own abilities and that he can be and was appreciated for more than his services.
This gave him the drive to build bigger and better things, which his friends happily assisted in creating.
Engie’s best memories are with that motley crew of scrawny, beaten-up kids.
But, as he became a teenager, the abuse grew worse by the day.
He was often kept in his dad’s garage to fix cars in sweltering heat and with nothing to show for his work except threats of what would happen if a customer complained.
His mother finally grew bitter enough to pick on him, wondering aloud and pointedly if she had made a mistake by having him, then immediately contradict herself by wailing in his arms about how she’s the most awful mother in the world, and how she would be gone soon, and then nobody would have to deal with her anymore.
Engie grew more and more distant from his friends as they either moved out, ran away, or, in Rhapsody’s case, died.
He thought of just shutting the garage door and turning on a car a couple times, but he would always return to his memories of the hidden cave of goodies his friends had collected or the many inventions they had helped him build.
It just wasn’t worth it.
On a night when his depression and self-doubt was especially bad, he decided to build a personal invention for the first time in years - a small, robotic chicken made out of bent gears and empty oil cans.
He worked on it for a few weeks, but made the mistake of leaving it on a work table once it was finished.
Engie came to work the next morning with his dad ready to chew him out. But, before any finger could be lifted against his son, he was interrupted by a sweet older couple that was having their tires replaced.
“Now, Ethan, ain’t that just the cutest thing you’ve ever seen in your life?”
“Hm?”
“That there chicken statue over there! It looks like it could very well get up and start peckin’ for worms, don’tcha think?”
Engie looked at the couple, then at his dad, then at his chicken. He slowly lifted it from the table and turned the key.
It started to slowly lean forward, then took a few steps on it’s long, spring-loaded legs. The neck went down, and the chicken’s rusty beak began to scrape at the pavement.
Now he had the husband’s attention.
“Didja build that yourself, son, or did your daddy help ya?”
Engineer looked at his dad for a split second before answering.
“My own sweat ‘n blood, sir. My daddy says I should stop wastin’ time on ugly thing-a-ma-jigs an’ put my hands to somethin’ worth doin’.”
The man smiled. “Well, this ‘ugly thing-a-ma-jig’ shows real skill. We could use somebody like you, once we train you up a bit.”
“Now hold on a damn - !” his father interjected, but was silenced with a cold stare.
“We’ll put ya through a state-of-the-art school, then put ya straight inta the work force. You can build whatever you like…and you’ll have a lot better materials than rusty tin. Whaddaya say, son?”
Engineer just nodded, and the man grabbed his hand and shook it.
“We’ll keep in touch.”
Engineer left that trailer park at age seventeen, leaving his fuming father and drunken mother behind.
He only stopped to visit Rhapsody’s grave before embarking on his new life.
There is still a stone plate with a message carved into it next to the headstone. If you brush off the leaves and dig out the moss, you can see Engie’s parting words:
“A friendship with you and the rest of the gang is the greatest thing I ever built. -Big Dell”
