Nemona, Female Neurodivergence, and Good Representation
Spoilers for the plot of ScarVi ahead, but here’s my full analysis and breakdown of Nemona!
So, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Game Freak making an autistic female main character? You must be out of your mind. This is clearly projecting!’
I’d like to preface this gently by saying that this is obviously just my personal conclusion based on subtextual analysis, but also, I’d like to call attention to the fact that Japan isn’t like the west when it comes to neurodiverse representation, and there isn’t a lot of Japanese media that explicitly uses the word autism. It’s a little unrealistic to expect Game Freak to call it by name, especially considering they make games for children and topics such as neurodiversity are often viewed as a more ‘adult’ thing to discuss. You are free to disagree with me, but please be polite in the replies of this post, as I only wish to have a constructive conversation about a writing decision that has been made.
Anyway, on to the good stuff and I must apologise in advance for this post being long, but I wanted to be thorough!
I played through all of ScarVi and I’m actually very pleased with Nemona as a character. I feel like despite the game’s technical quality, there was a real effort made this time around to flesh out the named characters. Nemona is one of my favourite examples of this, because her arc isn’t solely about being autistic, but it’s clearly a large part of her character and affects her life in a lot of ways.
Nemona is a battle fanatic, and it’s very likely one of her special interests. It’s how she connects with other people such as the main character, and it’s something she devotes her entire being and effort to. She never says she does so in order to impress others, but rather because it’s something she heavily enjoys.
Right from the start, Nemona is a successful champion rank trainer and wants you to become a trainer who can rival her in skill, and feels like it would lead to a better friendship if you could do that. Nemona’s priorities always centre around battling, and doing as much of it as possible. She’s the one who asks Geeta for permission to bestow a Tera orb upon your player. She gives you tips about the battle courts at different gyms. She even raises a new team of Pokémon throughout the game just to have an excuse to battle you at your level and watch you improve.
Nemona even loves battling so much that she finds it a little strange when others aren’t as enthusiastic about battling as she is, below is a quote I found particularly interesting because it really does show that she can be socially oblivious at times when it comes to societal expectations about what is an appropriate place or time to have a Pokémon battle.
Tumblr media
Accompanying this, multiple times throughout the game she exhibits impulsive or oblivious behaviour and asks you to have another battle with her straight after another battle you’ve just had, usually due to being excited. Sometimes other characters will need to remind her that your Pokémon require healing first, or that there are other things that need doing. She doesn’t always understand how things should be handled in a conventional manner, despite being an expert on the topic of battling! (Or, she gets too excited and can’t help herself.)
In post-game, there’s even a scene where she doesn’t seem to understand that another student is reluctant to battle her and makes an excuse to leave early because she’s so far from being a casual trainer that it intimidates him. This is, in my opinion, actually quite a sad scene. She genuinely continues to think that he will challenge her to a battle at a different time, not realising that her ‘unusual’ enthusiasm and skill has scared him away, and that he has no intention of returning. A situation I’m sure a lot of neurodiverse children would connect with because it so accurately depicts what it’s like when others don’t share your interests to the degree that you hoped they would. This scene also hints at Nemona’s trouble with reading the emotions and intentions of others.
Nemona’s final post-game scene (which please, I BEG of you to go watch, it’s so good) confirms this outright, and also gives one of the most relatable lines in media about what it’s like to be neurodivergent in any way, especially as somebody who is younger:
Tumblr media
Something I like about Nemona is that despite being socially oblivious and pushy with her interests, she is still a very sympathetic and friendly character. Not only does she cheer you on throughout the game, but she doesn’t only do it for the sake of serving only her own interests! She’s genuinely caring about others around her too.
Tumblr media
(Nemona, congratulating the player when they beat her at the end of her storyline after she goes full-out. She is thrilled that you beat her! I love this moment.)
Throughout the last chapter in the game, there’s a lot of great moments with Nemona that show how caring she is. I think the best moments however, are where she tries to understand and support a scared Miraidon, and where she tries to help Arven.
Initially, she is misunderstanding and expects that the second Miraidon will be friendly and that it will be a family reunion, but once she realises this is not the case, she immediately switches to trying to support your Miraidon in any way she can. Despite not understanding why Miraidon is so afraid of returning to the Crater and facing the other Miraidon, she can be observed multiple times attempting to encourage it during the final battle, and can be seen in the final cutscene of the game with her arm around it as the group walks back to the academy.
Tumblr media
(Nemona, displaying an implied struggle with visually judging the emotions of others.)
Nemona is also the one who suggests after a very heavy story ending that everyone goes home, and that they take the scenic route back to town. She clearly doesn’t know what to say to Arven about what he’s just been through, but she attempts to make him feel a bit better regardless.
Tumblr media
I think this makes for particularly good representation, because not only is she less feminine than previous female rivals with her more sporty style and interests (something very common with autistic women) it also shows depth. I’ve seen autistic characters before that fall into the stereotype of coming across as emotionally detached or cold, or far too over-reactive. But I think Nemona strikes a lovely balance of caring, emotional, and socially lacking.
Tumblr media
Now, on to a smaller detail that I want to point out that I really like the inclusion of is that glove. I could talk about how Nemona displays memory issues at times or other smaller symptoms of autism, but I really want to talk about the glove. I made a post on this subject the moment Nemona’s design was revealed on the official website, but I like that the game content openly confirmed that Nemona has motor issues with her dominant hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Nemona, needing to support her arm when about to throw a Pokéball, or when she is about to terastalise her Pokémon. The burst of energy from the tera orb must make things a bit more difficult for her. A lovely small detail in her battles.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Nemona, confirming that she has trouble with Pokéballs. Something her website entry also stated.)
Now I’ve saved this until last because this is, in my opinion, a smaller detail that they didn’t need to include to make Nemona read as neurodiverse, but I’m thrilled they did. Nemona is the only character who wears an arm brace, something I picked up on immediately in the trailers before the games released. No other trainers wear one for the terastalisation mechanic, unlike the Z-bands from Alola. And even though Pokémon battling is her bread and butter, she still struggles with certain aspects of it! Not only is this trouble with motor skills realistic, but it’s also a very accurate portrayal of motor dysfunction that a lot of neurodiverse people experience in their day to day lives.
To bring this all to a close, I think that even though it isn’t stated outright, I believe Nemona isn’t just representation of neurodiversity in women, but I think that she is also GREAT representation. She knows that she has problems, and tries her best regardless! She is kind, and caring, even though she has difficulties with reading the emotions of others and understanding social expectations. Her entire story may be about making friends with you through the medium of battling, but it’s also a story about how she’s struggled in the past to connect with others because of her love of that medium.
I truely do feel like she’s a lovely depiction to be in a children’s game, because she is a very positive depiction of something that a lot of kids go through, and in the end, she gets to be herself and she gets to be happy by being true to that self. She is never forced to change to make friends, and instead befriends you and the other characters simply by remaining as she is.

Ok, so this isn't my first request as I've sent a few requests before many years ago, but I think I have an idea I wanna see you turn into reality if that's ok? How about Protag introducing Ogerpon(Our sweet adopted daughter) to the main cast, something similar to what you did for the Ruination Quartet I suppose. Thanks a lot on advance, and sorry if it's a mouthful ×-×)'
YES THE MASK DAUGHTER ;w; I love Ogerpon 5ever
(also I know canonically the Teal Mask takes place a little while after the Treasure Hunt starts, but we'll say the protag is already a champion and everything).
........
After your short trip to Kitakami, Arven, Penny, and Nemona couldn't wait for you to tell them all about it!
Ofc since you already had the Ruinous Quartet captured, they suspected you would've found some other rare/legendary Pokémon in that region, too.
You just had a knack for getting such powerful (and often dangerous) creatures to trust you.
So when you finally introduced Ogerpon to the group, they're completely thrown off-guard by her cutesy appearance.
But after the initial shock passes, you explain to them what you've learned about her during your time in Kitakami.
Nemona grins as you talk about her masks and how she acted in battle (while omitting the fact you challenged Kieran beforehand and severely humbled the poor guy).
Ogerpon is still kinda shy around new humans, but she's giddy over all the positive attention your fellow Paldean champion is giving her! So they warm up to each other pretty quickly.
Penny's just relieved that you didn't bring home another harbinger of doom.
Plus, she completely understands how Ogerpon felt about being outcasted and misunderstood...#relatable
Arven did read a little about the legend surrounding the Ogre and the Loyal Three in his free time, only to gawk as you explain that it's actually the opposite: the Three were the real villains of the story.
He wonders how tf an awful lie like that could be told for generations....but to his relief, you helped convince the village that Ogerpon was good at heart (and that you captured the Loyal Three and made them see the error of their ways).
He does sympathize with her losing her trainer/parent figure long ago, too.
Introducing Ogerpon to picnics was....interesting, to say the least.
She was shy about eating at the table with the rest of your Pokémon team, or even eating at all tbh.
Never before has she shared a meal with others.
The only exception was during the mask festivals where she and her trainer had to go undercover and act human.
So she puts on one of her masks as a nervous habit, but Nemona encourages her to remove it, reassuring her that she's safe and that she didn't have to hide anymore.
Her kindness brings tears to her eyes, but she's smiling nonetheless.
And you smile, too, watching your friends slowly yet surely help Ogerpon feel more at home here in Paldea.
You're glad she chose to come along with you.

How to compose like Toby Fox
I analyzed Toby's music... here's the backbones to his songs, and various Toby techniques! I included ways to get started with recording your music! Read more to see 👀
Battle themes
For the music Toby uses in his battle themes, he starts with a 1-2 measure long riff. He gradually adds in more instruments, looping the original track from the intro. A simple tune you can hum to. After adding in several instruments, he adds the bridge of the song. He removes the beginning melody and lets the background music continue for a measure. Then he slows down the song and keeps one instrument. After that he adds a buildup and changes the octave, or adds harmony to the final chorus. At the very end, he adds a finale that ties the beginning to the end of the song.
Background music
For the background music during exploring, he makes the songs easily "loopable" so the beginning fades into the end. He uses orchestra sound fonts and ambient noise. During emotional short cut scenes he uses faint opera vocals as well. Don't forget the random wind whooshing sounds.
Instruments used
Undertale mostly focused on chiptune synthesizers and 8 bit sounds. Toby branched out to orchestra instruments in chapter 1 of Deltarune, and emphasized his piano skills. In chapter 2, he fell in love with the harpsichord that he'd romanced many years ago in his homestuck side gig. Thank goodness he left the weird overused synth pitch bending in his past. Good grief, that was... creative. Toby's been experimenting with brass instruments, which makes sense. Toby played trumpet in jazz band during high school. After his work on Pokémon, Toby's music has become diverse, and each song has a unique twist. Working with other artists was definitely a great step for him! Don't be afraid to reach out to other beginner musicians and collaborate!
Making music like Toby
To make music like Toby... experiment! Create a long-term relationship with the harpsichord and mash notes together until you find yourself playing them over and over, nodding your head in satisfaction. You gotta quickly record the track and tweak it later so you remember what it sounds like.
Simple ways to record music
Music professionals will K1LL me for this one. Here's some ways to begin recording music without buying that 1999$ springo bingo synth board with the doodoofart pro vst producing sound bit 2000.
Using these tips, you can record and change sound fonts! Once you record your track, you can mess around with the sound on your recording device! That's how Toby has so many instruments 👀
Look up videos on YouTube about converting music into wav and mp3 files. Toby didn't know what a wav file was when he began music production! Don't be scared of all these fancy weird words. You'll catch on! There's no shame in going on the web for help. Music production can get very complicated with random errors and shit. (I have cried over my piano before) That's what reddit is for! Frustration is inevitable. Just take a deep breath and STAY DETERMINED. Even if you can't play piano? Watch tutorials and practice! Toby is self taught and doesn't write sheet music!
If you have an electric piano keyboard, you can hook it up to a computer with a cable that's easily found on Amazon. You can also use an iPad pro, hook THAT up and record it in a program like garage band. I recommend investing in studio one 5 on your computer! If you've got studio one... get a vocaloid software bundle and mess around with piapro studio 👀 add vocals!!! There's some cheap vocaloids out there! Toby's worked with some vocaloid producers in the past! Mess around and have fun!
Get creative!
The keyboard is your playground. Toby says that simplicity is important. He mentioned this in the annotations included on the sheet music that came with the undertale collectors edition. You don't need to go overboard with advanced shit to sound professional. Some of the best songs are simple and catchy!
Toby would want you to be kind to yourself and your hands. Be patient. Music takes time! Make your own songs and follow your own path. Create your own style so when people hear your music they know it's you!
Good luck!

Ugh, people keep assuming I am some serious battles because I have a Medicham (his name is Marco) when he's kinda a service Pokémon for me. My bones don't work right so my Medicham does all the heavy lifting in the house and catches me before I bump into things or fall (which happens more than I would like.)
I live in walking distance from a fighting type gym amd Brawly was offering to hand out some Pokémon that weren't the best at competitive battles (apparently Marco is too calm) and he'll still check in to make sure the Pokémon are healthy.
"But Medicham are incredibly high energy and high strength, they can't possibly be happy in a non battling house." Marco is allowed to basically rearrange my furniture at will. He's a terrible interior designer but will happily move couches back and forth for fun. "But Medicham are naturally competitive--" I'm still in walking distance from a fighting type Gym. Marco will literally run circle around the Makuhita for fun. Brawly, who is a fighting type expert approves of the arrangement
"Medicham are still a Pokémon for advanced trainers" Marco is going to lift you, carry you out of my house, and block the door with a dresser if you talk bad about his life.
And then there are the freaks who think he is an attractive female. They get thrown in the ocean (they survive)
we are NOT going to ignore that last bit. ew
anyway im glad marcos having fun playing Happy Home Designer IRL

Random Pokémon Professor: What do you mean there’s been sightings of not only a Hoopa, a Entei, AND Palkia itself now your telling there’s sightings of a Mew?! Where are they even going?!
Meanwhile at the arc household
Jaune currently petting a sleeping mew: why do I feel like I’ve just greatly upset someone?

"Oh, yes, we've been keeping an eye on him." Professor Ozpin said as he nodded to the fellow Pokémon Professors on screen.
"And you didn't think it was important to tell us?!" Professor Birch shouted. "Think of all the research we could-"
"No." Professor Ozpin pushed up on his glasses. "He is a child, and he will continue to live as a child."
"Professor Ozpin, I'm sure even you can see the scientific gold mine you have living freely in your kingdom." Professor Elm offered.
"Indeed, but I'm not interested in advancing our research when the region is still at war."
"Ah, yes, right." Professor Rowan nodded. "Your Grimm problem. And you're sure there's nothing our Elite Four or Champions can do to hasten your victory?"
"Yes, I am. This is a battle won decisively, not swiftly." Professor Ozpin drank from his mug.
"But a war is best won when all regions agree that the problem has reached too far." Professor Sarada said before coughing. "If you'll just allow us to-"
"No." He set his mug down. "The offer is appreciated, but unnecessary. Remnant will not allow the Grimm infection to spread to the other regions."
Before all the other professors could shout their opinions on the matter, the entire group was silenced and set to mute. With a tap of his mic, only one was able to voice his opinion.
"We understand your thoughts on this task, especially with how arduous and daunting it may seem. We will continue to hope for the best in your battles, but should you need our aid, we will not hesitate to assist. After all, your contribution may not be in the name of science, but it is in the name human- and Pokémon-kind everywhere. Oh, and, er, Faunus-kind, too. We wish you the best of luck, Oz."
Professor Ozpin smiled as he was permitted to speak once more. "Thank you, Sammy."

oh no! what couldve happened to set the Drayster spiralling?
The short answer is: Drayton came to the harsh and heavy conclusion his best wasn't and would never be good enough.
To elaborate, it's well established that Drayton has repeated the same year of school not once, not even twice, but thrice. Given his seemingly rather flippant attitude towards his education, I wouldn't have seen any need to reflect on this further were it not for the fact he's stated to be a second-year student.
Tumblr media
I feel there could be a story hidden somewhere behind that little detail. It's entirely possible to me he could have spent his first year at Blueberry Academy attending classes and making an honest attempt to succeed in his studies.
At the very least, he managed to advance to the next year, something Drayton undoubtedly could not have accomplished if he didn't extend some amount of effort.
So, what could have occurred his second year to make him stop trying? His first second year, that is.
Sisterhood operates under a different timeline than the "canon" one, so for the moment we'll scoot what happens exclusively here in this universe to the side.
Drayton has two special conversations in The League Clubroom with Hassel and Geeta. The former provides the information the two know one another to some extent, and confirms all suspicions that Drayton is the grandson of Drayden.
Drayton himself tells Juliana/the protagonist he's been held back three years in a row, and says so quite calmly! However, he's not nearly as relaxed when Hassel brings up the topic. He's even decidedly defensive about it.
His conversation with Geeta goes a similar direction. His demeanor appears to instantly shift when she mentions him originating from a long line of esteemed Dragon-type users.
So, from both of these discussions I gathered that being held back is actually an issue Drayton does feel sensitive about, and that his reaction to the mentioning of his familial ties could suggest some significant strain in that area.
He also confessed that classroom learning is difficult for him, so my hypothesis is this: Drayton did try his absolute best his first year in school, but ultimately his best was more or less a D student when battling wasn't involved.
And it was embarrassing. It was an embarrassment for someone with such a prestigious background to be in possession of such abominable marks.
Drayton tried his best, but it wasn't good enough. So he stopped trying at all.
Tumblr media
(Am I reading much too deeply into these moments? Possibly! But I will continue to believe they are that deep.)
Now we step into Sisterhood's alternate timeline and will delve into the specific event that made this universe's incarnation of Drayton dive headfirst into his downward spiral.
His grandfather Drayden speaks glowingly of Iris, his adoptive sister. Drayton doesn't resent her in the slightest for this; he's treated her as family since day one.
However, the fact remains that Drayden searched the world over for a successor after apparently deeming his still young grandson unsuitable, and eventually returned to Unova with an even younger girl from The Village of Dragons in tow. The favoritism he displayed towards Iris was impossible to overlook, and it frequently left Drayton struggling with feelings of inadequacy.
But one fateful day during his second year at the academy, he conquered The Blueberry League and was crowned its new Champion! He finally felt a sense of accomplishment!
Unfortunately, his achievement was overshadowed entirely by Iris claiming the title 'Champion of Unova'.
So Drayton smiled for his adoptive sister. He smiled as though his heart wasn't slowly shattering.
And then, he began to spiral.
(Does Drayton Pokémon know that I'm proud of him and that his best IS good enough? I need him to know.)

picrew cred ✿ pfp cred
pinned post may change over time !!!
in character blog !! i basically pretend to be a character in the pokemon universe, so blanket unreality warning !!! this is also a main / sister blog of sorts to @fairyofkalos ( same rules specified ) , in which their universes are connected and there will be many references to eachother in both blogs <3 i may be more active on here in comparison to @/fairyofkalos , so fair warning !!
i don’t interact with proshippers / comshippers , zionists , terfs , and anyone that applies in the usual dni criteria ^_^ i will also block freely if you weird me out and make me uncomfortable ! though , i do prefer interactions with muns who are also in the same age range as i am !!
diwata is literally my pokétrainer sona , so please be respectful ! i don't condone death threats or hate of any sort even if in character , since it makes me uncomfortable !! oh also , despite him being my sona , his actions or thought process do not reflect me ( the mun !! ) as a person 😞 he is still removed from me as character !
diwata is a trans guy and so am i !! :D he prefers to dress femininely , but i appreciate if people would use the correct pronouns ( he / him & xe / xer / xem ) and masc / neutral labels for him !! and , he's also bayano ( if i'm filo , he's gotta be filo too >:] ) !! oh oh , and when referring to / talking about me ( aka the mun ) , you can just call me dulcie / dulce ( he / him ) !!! (๑>◡<๑)
( + ) oh oh , and diwa is still in the closet to his family but out socially 👍 !! his name has been legally changed though :3c there will be mentions and vague references of his bio family on this blog , but their identities will more or less be obscured !! aka no posts written by them and any in - person meetings with them and another person's muse are implied >:P
no / low stakes , so i probably won't be participating in any big or major events in the community ! ^_^💧 but , feel free to send me an ask about it anyways even if there's no guarantee i'll go with it ! i'll rarely do any " in - person " or battle roleplays too ( that isn't to say that i wouldn't completely !!! ) , so most mention of characters meeting is an implied thing ! though , once again , feel free to ask for an off screen thread ! i wouldnt mind 👍
i use fake regions in place for the real countries , and i might mention a few fakemon as well !
this blog treats pokémon like animals ( that just so happen to have supernatural capabilties and are also able to understand human speech ) , since they're essentially the animals of this world despite having a penchant for battling and being — y'know , pokémon ! pokémon are also commonly eaten here on this blog ^_^💧
interactions with eebydeebies and sapient / sentinet mons are verrry dependent and selective , so i apologize in advance !! </3
i also hc that domesticated pokémon are trained to have their moves be less lethal in battles than if they were to give it their all like they were fighting for survival , for obvious ethical reasons . this is why pokémon simply faint in battle instead of just dying from the attacks and how their trainers don't get caught up in the crossfire . 'mons that have fainted aren't necessarily unconscious , but merely don't have the energy , ability , etc to continue battling , which is shown in the anime . battles aren't supposed to be deadly , but can definitely shift that way if not careful
( + ) " revivals " are temporary solutions for when a 'mon faints , but a trainer should always check in to the nearest pokémon center after a battle regardless
levels aren't really a thing on the blog and aren't needed in order for pokémon to evolve ! i don't consider " HP " to really be a thing either , other than just a marker to determine how close your mon is to fainting :P natures and characteristics mean nothing to me >:3c
i’m aware that the pokémon universe and rotomblr have this sort of — weird space time continuum and multiverse , so !!! 0_0 my blog won’t have too many weird timeline hijinks for the most part other than a few brief mentions / incidents , since i just assume everyone lives in the same universe - ish !! if i interact with two different blogs that just so happen to rp the same character , i wont mention any past rps that they werent apart of since !! different portrayal !!! since diwata is my sona , he'll still age with me ^_^
this blog is just for being silly and some comforting escapism , so be nice :3

Why I Quit “Pokémon Violet”.
I'm officially done with playing "Pokémon Violet".
No, I didn’t complete it.
Sadly I found my enjoyment of it so deeply sabotaged by lack of basic quality control, that I gave up on the game fairly early on, though I did put in a number of gameplay hours.
In terms of total concrete plot progress, I completed a single gym, and then briefly went into a Team Star base just to see what it was like.
The gym was by orders of magnitude the most easily completed first gym I ever encountered in a Pokémon game in terms of field-based challenges and Pokémon battles.
From what I heard, the gyms in this game can be approached in any order, but that they don't actually scale with your team's levels, or based on how many badges you already have.
If this is true, this is laughably lazy design for what is supposed to be an open world game in which you can approach challenges in any order, but if this is not true, then pardon me on not knowing in advance whether or not this is true, as I went into the game as spoiler-free as possible in the hopes of experiencing this game without outside bias coloring my experience.
The concept that gym leaders choose to face challenging trainers using a team selected based on the challenger’s current experience level is something that had already been explored in official Pokemon material more than a decade ago, so the failure to deploy it here when the game’s open structure obviously calls for it is inexplicable.
I did the Cortondo Gym first. My levels were similar to the Gym Leader's own Pokémon, but I effortlessly crushed them, and had more difficult encounters with ordinary Trainers out in the overworld in the areas I had been exploring near the city hosting that gym.
I'm someone who will ALWAYS peruse "easy mode" options if they are available. I am completely illiterate in regards to competitive Pokémon battles, and don't even have the full type advantage chart memorized. But even for me, Cortondo Gym was disappointingly lacking in difficulty.
I also want to comment on the pre-gym minigame, which was set outside the gym itself in an area on the outskirts of the town.
The olive roll maze was a neat way to tie in some of the cultural elements of the actual locations the games setting, the Galar Region, is inspired by, but the mechanic of moving the inflatable olive ball felt lame.
Though it is only a minigame which is supposed to be inconsequential, I am harsh on it because it seemed like minimal effort was put into it, regardless of its overall importance to the game.
The playable character's in-game model does not act as though they are interacting with the olive ball, and I would go as far as to say that it appears that they are unaware that the ball even exists within their universe.
Compare this to "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker", released decades earlier on far less advanced hardware of the standard definition Nintendo GameCube, in which the player character automatically looks toward objects of interest in the immediate area that can be interacted with, and the characters arms and face actually change to reflect the effort and intention of moving that object as the player makes this action happen.
But in this olive roll minigame in “Pokémon Violet”, you just walk at the ball to make it move in the direction you want, while the character mindlessly gazes forward as though nothing is happening. It doesn't feel like a minigame meant to entertain or challenge the player, it looks and feels like a collision detection demonstration assembled with minimal care or game design theory put into it.
And even so, the minigame was completely effortless to win, and I didn't even realize it was over, and that I won, until it took me to the result screen.
There wasn't even an on-screen timer to add any sense of urgency to the minigame, and I have no idea if being penalized for taking too long was even a possibility.
I've been interested in Pokémon since I first read a blurb in a gaming magazine in the mid-90's about a monster collecting and battling RPG for Game Boy that was becoming popular in Japan, and I was enchanted by its world and characters since the video games and anime first hit North American shores.
This franchise shaped my life for the better in ways too extensive and detailed to discuss here, so I'm not happy to be in a situation where even after counting down the days till release and roaming from store-to-store to find a copy, that my interest in "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" has deflated.
In spite of how much I wanted to give this game a full playthrough, in spite of mounting frustrations, my final straw was when I actually stopped looking forward to streaming on the days I announced I was to play “Pokémon Violet”, and felt regret that I "had" to play it on my show in order to fulfill the schedule I promised to my Twitch viewers to stream the game.
The mere complexities of modern games already made me feel a slight disconnect from this title.
Going from traditional 3D Zelda games like "Wind Waker" and "Twilight Princess" to the new style introduced in "Breath of the Wild" was an extreme learning curve for me, especially in regards to operating the more sophisticated interface, though over time I was able to get the hang of it and enjoy the game.
I never imagined that I'd be in a situation where a Pokémon game of all things had a more complex user interface than the latest major Zelda release, and that I'd be mashing one button after another trying to activate nested and cryptic functions that were accessed in very simple menus even as recently as the Nintendo 3DS era.
In addition to that, this game forces the player into tutorials for the simplest of things universal to most modern games of even the mildest complexity, yet leaves tutorials for mechanics newly introduced to the Pokémon series restricted to completely optional and easy-to-miss places tied to special events.
The real killer for me is the extreme lack of polish in almost every aspect of the experience. Characters even just a single body-length away from the player's character are frequently animated with frame rates resembling a flip-book in which half the pages have been torn away.
Obvious shortfalls in the timing and pacing of Game Freak's cutscene animations lead to thinly veiled shortcuts such as cutscene text scrolling unreasonably fast even for a literate adult with an above average reading speed.
Static screenshots are sometimes used during otherwise fully animated cutscenes, and at other points cutscenes loop clumsily and unconvincingly on a particular moment as the scene waits for a player prompt to continue the narrative
Other times the graphics fail to accurately depict things that players are expected to believe are taking place within the game world. Important details essential to gameplay or story beats are sometimes not shown on screen, are mentioned only in interface or character dialog, or are rendered in outstandingly unconvincing ways.
In the first decade of the 21st Century, I owned Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube, and enjoyed games on all three systems.
Since then, I have focused my gaming habits on Nintendo systems.
I chose Nintendo DS over PlayStation Portable.
I chose Wii over PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,
I chose Nintendo 3DS over PlayStation Vita.
I chose Wii U over PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
And today, I own Nintendo Switch, but not PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.
If I was concerned with enjoying ultra high-resolution visuals and maxed-out frames-per-second, I would not have been choosing Nintendo systems in spite of them being the lowest performance hardware options on the market.
But even within the limitations of the Nintendo Switch, which is running a low-power-consumption mobile chipset that was arguably already out-of-date when it first hit the market six entire years ago, “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” completely fail at taking reasonable advantage of what the system is capable of.
"Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" are 2022 releases, published exclusively on Nintendo Switch, the same system that launched in 2017 with "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
"Breath of the Wild" was was a game designed with the intention of being launched as an exclusive for Wii U, an even less powerful console released closing in on five years earlier than the Switch, and more than a full decade ago as of the time I'm writing this, with Wii U itself having been widely considered under-powered at the time of its 2012 release, being in the performance range of high definition consoles that entered the market as far back as 2005.
"Breath of the Wild" had its technical shortcomings, but even the Wii U version of "Breath of the Wild" completely annihilates "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" in terms of rudimentary technical proficiency, and when examining "Breath of the Wild" in terms of overall presentation in comparison to " Pokémon Scarlet and Violet", the comparison is such that I'm amazed that Nintendo, who founded their brand as a video game manufacturer and publisher on industry-leading high quality, would allow their name to be associated with the latest Pokémon entries.
I can not overstate the extent to which “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” fails to deliver on the promise of basic quality control. Games with far fewer technical problems than this game have been criticized severely by review outlets and the gaming community, and I am convinced that these new Pokémon titles are being excused for their incompetence based on good will alone in ways that no other franchise would be permitted to get away with.
In-game tutorial screens featuring screenshots for illustrative purposes are from the Japanese versions of the game, and had this text censored out with a very crudely applied distortion filter in an embarrassing and ineffective attempt hide this fact. This is something appropriate for a work-in-progress demonstration build of the game, not the final product.
The first time I caught a Pokémon, the Pokéball animation froze in mid air, leaving me to think that this was the game's way of depicting Pokemon catching, and that these new Pokéballs hovered in the air rather than falling to the ground as Pokéballs in previous games did.
No matter how good this game is, when malfunctioning animations are mistaken by an experienced player to be representations of what is actually taking place in the game world, that is a serious problem, and anyone paying money for this game deserves better.
Shadows of environmental objects regularly flicker in and out of existence in a way that's not only unconvincing and an obvious malfunction of the graphics system, but in specific instances may pose an actual safety hazard to players susceptible to seizures triggered by blinking lights, which is something a product in the Pokémon franchise in particular should have been exceptionally aware of after similar light patterns in an early episode of the Pokémon animated series triggered seizures in children, which became an international news event, but a cause of widespread condemnation and ridicule aimed toward the franchise and the companies behind it.
The seizure incident caused by the Pokémon anime so impacted the culture of the franchise’s brand management that a particular Pokémon creature featured in that episode was never again depicted in animated form to avoid even the slightest association with the public safety disaster, and references to that particular character have been kept to an absolute minimum in the decades since, so the fact that glitches which cause blinking and flickering patterns being permitted to exist within the newest Pokemon game is mind-boggling.
Characters and objects within immediate sight of the player character frequently vanish and re-appear without warning.
The player character is liable to sometimes phase through the ground, or pass through what are meant to be solid walls, breaking immersion and sometimes causing the game itself to become impossible to play.
It's been amazing to watch Nintendo fans point and laugh for years at slipping quality standards for headline games on competing systems that were significantly more powerful than Nintendo's, using them as proof that more powerful hardware and better graphics alone don't make for better games, only to see them now accuse those who point out the shortcomings and fundamental deficiencies of the newest Pokémon games of being "haters" who are holding Game Freak, The Pokemon Company, and Nintendo, to unfair and unreasonable standards.
The more extreme and irrational defenders of the state of the game have gone so far as accuse critics of lying about quality control issues to make Game Freak look bad, and claim that that the ample footage of these easy to encounter malfunctions was either manipulated by hoaxers using video editing software, or even filmed using deliberately altered copies of the game that were made to suffer glitches.
I feel I am being generous to Game Freak in saying that everyone working on the game had the best intentions, but should have spent (or been allowed to have spent) at least another year on this title.
My already stated observations of the elements of this game which are obviously struggling to function properly don't even begin to address the parts that are simply reflections of either laziness, a rushed development cycle, or both.
When exploring the game's world, I encountered  multiple duplicates of the same stores selling the same items within eye-shot of each other within the same city, or even directly next door to one another.
This was so blatant that it made me speculate if these choices were cheekily made by rebellious lower level Game Freak employees to see how far they could push the limits of corners they were instructed by their superiors to cut, before they were actually confronted over them by their employers.
What's worse, the interiors of most shops are represented in the game only as text based menu interfaces, which pull me out of the game world just as much as laughably bad character animations that resemble fan-made parody cartoons posted to the internet.
Poorly rendered, poorly applied, and obviously repetitive surface textures that make certain objects such as cliff faces and buildings resemble assets lifted from a Nintendo 64 game are just the cherry on top.
"Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon", itself a Nintendo 64 title, has every single shop in the game rendered as a location with an interior that can be entered and explored. No matter how inconsequential those store interiors were, they helped to convincingly portray a living world that is real to the characters within the game.
Menu based shops do NOT do that.
My continued fascination with the Pokémon world, and its creatures, locations, lore, and characters, can not overcome the fundamental incompetence demonstrated by "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet", which completely demolishes my ability to enjoy it, which is a shame, because the intent to create an imaginative world thriving with lively creatures, memorable locations, and characters worth helping or fighting against, is clearly present, and in some cases the heights of care put into these elements match the lows of the bad quality control.
Unless an obvious revolution in The Pokémon Company's standards of ambition and quality is reflected by the next generation of Pokemon games, it breaks my heart to say that "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" will be the last mainline entries in the series that I will be excited for, or interested in.
I pushed myself to play "Pokémon Violet" in spite of all its bad points.
I'm regretfully ending my time with "Pokémon Violet" in spite of all of its good points.

Hi! Would you consider writing a Pokémon SV Rika x NB! Reader? Sfw, with them going on a fair date? Thank you so much in advance!
I love Rika. Such a fucking icon like?????!?? Peak fem character design 🙏 I want to hug her Clodsire but I would probably die if I did that
Also funny little tidbit about this story - it's mildly inspired by a personal experience of mine!! I went to the county fair with a buddy of mine when it was in town and got up to a bunch of shenanigans, including winning a gigantic plushie that I could barely carry lmao.
Bonus, my excessive knowledge of darts from playing way too much of the dart minigame in both Stardew Valley and Persona 5 Royal!! I did unnecessary research to try and find out how to completely dominate the optional objectives.

Rika X NB Reader
Every year, Mesagoza hosts a lovely fair celebrating the inhabitants of Paldea, and their rich culture. A certain member of the Elite Four has more fun than she'd anticipated.
Reader is not the SV protagonist - They're the former champion of Kalos, and took up baking after they were usurped. Their team is left relatively ambiguous, with the only mentioned Pokemon being a Dedenne and a male Pyroar. Reader is also mentioned to be shorter than Rika, because I assume she is very tall based on her ingame model.
Tumblr media
Paldea is a gorgeous region. There's so many sights to see, things to do, Pokemon to meet... But to some, at least to Rika, you hadn't even seen half of it if you didn't attend the annual fair in Mesagoza.
Everybody came together to show the best of what the region had to offer, from the pottery of Alfornada or the cuisine of Cascarrafa. Rika made it a point to visit whenever it began, since it was a pleasant escape from her usual duties as a member of the Elite Four.
For the past two years, though, she always found herself beelining for one particular stall - the one run by Katy. Sure, the pastries were great, but that wasn't the only reason. Katy ran the stall with the help of a special someone, and that special someone was extremely important to Rika.
She could still remember how they first met - they'd come up to the Pokemon League a few years back, but without the intention to battle. Rika had originally assumed they were just there to see the sights, but then they had introduced themselves as the former champion of Kalos, and wanted to speak to Geeta.
She had so many questions, but not enough time to ask them. After they had their chat with the chairwoman (evidently just to praise her work), they walked right back up to Rika and asked her if she'd like to battle. Not as an official challenger, just for fun.
They hadn't even Terastallized their Pokemon, and they still decimated her. She didn't even know Dedenne could so easily defeat three ground types in a row. The moment she returned her Clodsire, she matched right up to them and asked for their contact information.
And there they were now, two star-struck lovers.
Rika hooked her thumbs in her pockets as she walked up the steps by the entrance of Mesagoza, eyes scanning the crowd. She could see the other members of the Elite Four were enjoying themselves - Poppy was happily tugging an amused Hassel about, stopping at anything she found remotely interesting, and Larry was finally relaxing as he enjoyed a snack at one of the various food stalls.
Finally, she spotted what she was looking for. A Dedenne. Now, a lot of people owned Dedenne, sure - but she only knew one person who's Dedenne wore an expert belt like a scarf. She hurried over to the stall, and was greeted with the pleasant aroma of strawberries and cream cheese.
The one she was looking for was preparing the prettiest crepes she'd ever seen, their Dedenne perched atop their head like a particularly electrifying hat. The moment the Antenna Pokemon saw her, he chattered excitedly, leaping off his trainers head and directly into her expecting arms. She'd gotten used to him throwing itself at her - he liked to do that.
"Hello to you, too." She chuckled, slumping over awkwardly to allow the Dedenne to climb up onto her shoulder. The other trainer glanced around worriedly, before they saw where their Pokemon had gone.
"Ah, ma chérie!" They looked positively giddy, the term of endearment slipping off their tongue before they could think. Wiping the strawberry juice off their hands with their apron, they rounded the stall to embrace Rika. "I see Bijou missed you as much as I did."
"I bet it's not nearly as much as I missed you." Rika teased lightly, letting her fingers entwine with theirs even as they split apart. Bijou the Dedenne was clearly thrilled, rubbing his slightly charged cheeks against Rika's face in an obvious gesture of affection. "How has the stall been?"
"Oh, busy busy. But Katy's doing most of the legwork business-wise, I was just helping." They hummed, giving Rika's gloved hand a squeeze. "Do you want to walk around with me?"
"Of course I do. I always do."
"I'll tell Katy, then, she won't mind me taking a break." They smiled, leaving for just a moment to go inform the baker of their plans. Bijou continued to nuzzle Rika's face, whiskers slightly scratching her. A Pyroar, one with a large, glorious mane padded out from behind the stall, tail flicking casually as he took the time to greet Rika as well. She recalled his nickname was Hugo, giving him a light pat on the head. "Alright! Let's go!"
Rika hooked an arm around their shoulders as they returned Bijou and Hugo to their Luxury Balls, all too satisfied to be near them again.
"What's the plan? Where are we heading first?" She mused aloud, using her free hand to gesture broadly across the plaza.
"Mmm... I saw they set up some new games this year. Do you want to check it out?" They asked with a glimmer in their eye. Even if they'd not been champion for some time now, Rika noticed they still had a firey competitive side.
"Let's go then. Try not to knock over all the bottles at the ring toss like you did last year." Rika earned a light slap on the side for that, but she knew it was worth it.
The various games at the fair weren't the main attraction, more of a fun way to occupy particularly antsy kids, but they were very entertaining. Quite a few of them were just rigged games of chance, but there were a handful that were skill-based.
"Rika, look." They nudged her side urgently, gesturing to one of the various stands. An almost comically large stuffed Dudunsparce was hung up at one of the stands, so long its tail nearly brushed along the ground. "It's so cute."
"It is pretty cute." Rika pondered, an arm still slung around the other. It looked like the game was just darts, though it likely had some difficult twist that would make winning feel even more glorious. "...How about I test my skill, eh?"
"Oh, you don't need to-!" They began, but she was already set on getting that ridiculously ginormous Dudunsparce for them. She removed her arm from their shoulders, fixing her gloves with a simple tug.
"How much for a game?" She asked, leaning on the counter casually. The fellow behind the stall perked up when she spoke, setting his hands on his hips.
"It's 200 for one game. Ya get 6 darts, and ya have to score exactly 301 to win the big prize." He explained, pointing at the Dudunsparce. "Get less than 301 and you get one of the little ones. Get more, and you don't earn any prize."
Rika bounced the possibilities back and forth in her head. Scoring exactly 301 points wouldn't be impossible, but it would be rather difficult... She did trust her aim, though. If she got this right the first try, she could get that massive thing for the price of a PokeBall.
"Alright, alright." She made up her mind, fishing her wallet out of her pocket and handing over the money. The man gave her the colorful arrangement of darts, bidding her a sly 'good luck' before ducking out of the way. Rika shot her partner a cheeky grin and a wink, casually swiping her hair out of her face. "How about a good luck charm from you?"
They giggled at her slightly dramatic flair, standing up as tall as they could and looping their arms around her. The kiss they shared was brief, but full of nothing but love... And well-wishes for the dart game.
"Is that satisfactory for you?" They mused as they parted, making a point to "fix" her necktie even if it was already quite neat.
"Very." Rika let her fingers trail down their arms, lingering for as long as she could before she turned her attention back to the game she was supposed to be playing.
While this little game wasn't quite like a Pokemon battle, Rika found herself hyperfocused on achieving her goal. They motivated her to do the best they could in everything, probably just because she loved seeing them smile.
She found herself throwing darts without thought, the first finding its mark in a double twenty. The next three landed nicely in triple twenty, and the fifth barely made it onto a triple fifteen.
Rika twirled the last dart between her fingers for a moment - if she'd done the math right in her head, she was in an excellent position to land the score she needed. She glanced over her shoulder to see her partner giddy with excitement, the spark in their eye reminiscent of a star in the night sky. It was easy to get overjoyed about such a simple thing, and their joy was positively contagious.
Her hands reacted before her brain could, and she tossed the final dart. It landed on the edge of the double eighteen, wobbling precariously as though threatening to slip free... Before staying in place.
"Huh! Guess I shouldn't have expected any less from one of the Elite Four, eh?" The man behind the counter shrugged light-heartedly, before waving vaguely to the plush Dudunsparce. "It's all yours. Thanks for playing."
Rika carefully took the Dudunsparce down from where it had been hung up, slinging it around her shoulders like a weirdly thick scarf.
"So, how do I look?" She leaned toward them with a sneaky grin.
"Like my knight in shining armor." They laughed, practically throwing themselves into her waiting arms. Perhaps Bijou had gotten it from them. "You're too kind, ma chérie. Thank you."
"I'm happy if you're happy." Rika passed the giant plush to them, and they wrapped it around their shoulders like she had. "Want to get some food?"
"Sure, but what do you want to get? This'll be my treat, by the way, you've earned it." They spoke with a voice so firm it could stop a rampaging Tauros, and Rika knew better than to argue. For someone who once nearly burst into tears because they couldn't open a jar, they could be a little intimidating when they needed to be.
"Something sweet sounds good, but what would you recommend?" Rika knew exactly what she was doing by asking this - they were passionate about baking and pastries, even moreso once they'd started working with Katy. The moment she said the word sweet, they perked up, obviously considering the many possibilities.
"Well, I may be biased, but crepes are always tasty - gelato would be nice since it's hot, or maybe-" They went on and on, gesturing wildly as the pair walked aimlessly around Mesagoza. There was nothing Rika adored more than hearing them so excited about something. She loved the sound of their voice, especially when they said her name. Their light accent had a certain charm to it she could barely resist. She was especially fond of their little petname for her, and had absolutely encouraged them to call her that as much as they pleased.
"...Rika, what do you think?" They finally said, pausing in their tracks. She stopped beside them, rubbing her chin in mock thought.
"Hmmm... Gelato sounds good on a warm day like this." She stuck her hands back in her pockets. They were positively beaming, hooking their arm through hers once more. Having a point of contact was so delightful, even such a simple touch.
The couple made their way through the crowds of the Mesagoza fair, the former champion passing the stuffed Dudunsparce over to Rika when they spotted the little stall selling gelato.
The time they spent apart felt much longer than it actually was, Rika waiting patiently to the side as they chatted amiably with the young woman behind the stall. Her attention turned back to the crowds once more, watching the citizens of Paldea enjoy their time together. She swore she saw Nemona and Florian walking together, pulling two other students along with them.
It showed off the essence of Paldea quite nicely - everybody was happy, indulging in the variety of things the region had to offer. It made Rika proud to live there, proud to be part of the league.
"Rika!" They called, grabbing her hand and snapping her out of her little daze. "Let's go find someplace to sit."
"Mhmm, just one thing first." Rika said casually, setting a hand on the small of their back before scooping them up. They yelped in surprise, wrapping an arm around her to support themselves. It was lucky they hadn't dropped the gelato. "Hah, I've always wanted to see if I could do this."
"A warning would be appreciated next time." They snorted.
"No promises."
Rika walked off with her beloved in her arms, and a comically large plush around her shoulders. And, to be frank, she couldn't have been any happier.
