#Pepa Angst

Note
For the writing starters, “I didn’t know where else to go” with Pepa and Bruno perhaps? :D
This is a long one. I threw in Felix as well, cause my man needs some love too. I imagine them all to be somewhere between 16-17 years old
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pepa. Your weird brother is here."
Pepa, young and impulsive and with a protective streak a mile wide, bites her tongue until she can taste blood. She wants to tell Alecia to shut her trap, wants to kick Rico's shin for snickering like a donkey, wants to turn her back on this small group of teenagers that have big mouths but nothing to show for it, and never look back.
But Felix is part of that group. They are his friends and cousins (twice removed, but still!) and she likes him. Oh, she likes him so much. Her heart does a summersault every time she sees him and it's all she can do to keep the rainbow suppressed when he smiles at her.
They have talked once or twice, but today is the first day that he's invited her to hang out with him and his friends in that little clearing in the woods. She still doesn't know if he likes her that way, but the hope is like a beast in her chest, wild and untamed. She wants to make a good impression. She wants his friends to like her and she wants to be everything he could ever want in a girl.
But all she is right now is the sister of the village weirdo.
Pepa doesn't want to think like that. Bruno knows how important today is (he'd begged her to shut up about this 'date but maybe not date oh my, do you think it's a date?' just this morning). He wouldn't come here if it wasn't important.
But all the same, when her eyes find him hiding behind a tree, watching her and the others, a surprising amount of frustration within her bubbles to the surface and a small cloud gathers above her head. It's not solely his fault. She has been stressed for days about this meeting and now that she's here her anxiety doesn't get better but worse. She is analysing every look, every word. Is there a double meaning behind any of it? Was Felix' cousin laughing at her joke or laughing at her? Is Felix really looking at her with affection or is it just condescension?
She's never felt so insecure before and seeing her brother cowering behind a tree, the hood of his oversized ruana pulled up and into his face, doesn't help any. He looks like a wraith. He looks like the brujo they all accuse him of being, watching them from the shadows of the treeline, all creepy and stuff.
"What a freak." Osvaldo mutters.
"Hey!" It's Felix who snaps at him and if Pepa wasn't so embarrassed, she might have appreciated it more than she does. "Shut it, Oz!" He turns to Pepa and tries to catch her gaze. "You wanna go and see what he needs?"
Pepa can't meet his eyes, just nods and hurries over to her brother with quick, agitated steps. Bruno must know that she is coming, but he is still half hiding behind that stupid tree. He has buried his nails into the bark and keeps his head down. She can't see his face at all.
"Bruno!" Pepa hisses as soon as she is close enough. She allows herself a small cloud, hoping that she is far enough away that Felix won't see. "What are you doing here?"
"M'sorry." he mumbles. "I just... Juli s'with Mama and..."
"What's that got to do with anything?" Pepa explodes. She can feel the stares of the others on her back like needles poking her, drawing blood, poisoning her mind and soul. "Dios Bruno. Can't you spend one afternoon without one of us holding your hand?"
Her little brother flinches back from her anger and Pepa immediately feels guilt clawing at her chest. She also can't help but notice that he is clinging to that tree with a kind of focus that almost seems desperate.
"M'sorry." he repeats and Pepa feels a pit form in her stomach. His voice is shaking, his arms too. He sounds like he is on the verge of crying. "I don't wan' Mama to know. I didn't know where else to go."
"Brunito." Her voice is soft now, soothing, her anger already nothing more than a fleeting memory. Something is wrong. Very wrong. "Look at me."
He doesn't. Pepa has to grab his shoulder and guide his face up with a careful hand under his chin.
She gasps when it comes into view and immediately brushes the hood away to get a better look. The black eye and split lip aren't even the worst.
The worst is the bruise at his temple and the dazed look in his eyes.
Panic seizes her heart. She's seen enough concussions while helping Julieta hand out food to know the signs.
The panic is quickly overshadowed by a cold, hard fury.
"Who did this?" she asks, eerily calm. Her hand is still cupping his chin, her thumb brushing over his cheek. Careful. So careful, as if she is handling cracked glass. Only the thundering, black cloud over her head betrays the turmoil wreaking havoc under her skin.
Bruno shakes his head. Of course he does. He never willingly tells her who his attackers are. Not that it matters. Pepa will find out. She always does and when she does? May God have mercy with them.
Cause Pepa won't.
"Everything alright here?"
Pepa whirls around and tries to shield her brother. She knows the voice and knows that he won't harm them, but her instincts are going haywire. Everything suddenly seems like a threat.
Even wonderful Felix, who is standing at her shoulder and winces in sympathy when he sees Bruno's face.
"Ay mierde, hombrecito! That looks bad. Who did this?"
Bruno just stares at the other boy and stays silent. Pepa really doesn't like the dazed look in his eyes. They need to find Juli and lure her away from Mama's side. As much as Pepa would like to trust their Mama to deal with this in a satisfactory manner, Pepa knows that she will only talk with the bullies and their parents. If she even bothers to find out who they are and doesn't just tell Bruno to make more of an effort to 'make nice' with the other kids.
No no. The time for talking has passed years ago. This needs Pepa's personal, physical touch and she can only do that if her mother isn't aware enough to stop her.
"Don't worry. I'll find out.", she promises darkly. "I have to get him home. I think he has a concussion."
"I'll come with you. Maybe whoever did this is still around."
"I can protect us!" Pepa can't help bristling. The cloud over her head thunders ominously.
Felix stares at the dark mass over their heads and Pepa feels like crying. He will never ask her out on a proper date now. Boys don't like violent girls. They don't want to be intimidated by a girl. They want to feel strong and in control. They want a pretty, vulnerable girl, who they can protect, who wants to be protected.  They want everything Pepa is not. After today, Felix will never look at her and think-
"Beautiful." The whisper is more breath than actual sound and Pepa almost convinces herself that she has imagined it. Felix stares at her cloud for a second longer with wonder and adoration, before he grins at the pair. He helps her steady her brother who is leaning dangerously to the side. "I know you can, Pepa. But I want to help you. Both of you."
She just nods, too stunned to speak. Bruno leans heavily into her side, but doesn't shake Felix's hand off his shoulder. Which is either an amazing sign of trust or proof that he is even more out of it than she thought.
They turn to leave and the group they leave behind shouts after them. Something about abandoning them and to not bother coming back if they leave now. Pepa couldn't care less and Felix doesn't even turn around, just cheerfully tells her to ignore los cabrones. He has slung one of Bruno's arms over his shoulder and periodically pats his back.
Their progress is slow and Pepa grows more and more worried the longer Bruno stays silent. But when he opens his mouth, she kinda wishes that he hadn't, since he is apparently way too out of it to know what is going on.
Or rather, who is with them.
"Sorry Pepi. Din't wanna crash y'r date with Felix."
Pepa keeps her face straight ahead. She will not react. She will NOT react. Other than the bright hot flush on her cheeks and the mist suddenly surrounding her head, she will not react.
"Don't worry, amigo." Felix says. His voice sounds… it sounds actually pretty happy.
Pepa glances at him over Bruno's head and her heart skips a beat at the smile he regards her with. He winks at her and she thinks she might swoon. "We'll just have to continue this after your sister beat up whoever did this to you. Or maybe that actually could be our next date. I definitely want to see that."
Pepa grins. "Sure. It's a date."
(Bruno later tells her that, if the concussion hadn't made him throw up minutes later, it would have been their cheesy flirting. Pepa just ruffles his hair and keeps preparing for her date. Felix has just confirmed that the bully suspects nothing and has agreed to meet them in that clearing in an hour.
She cracks her knuckles.
It will be so romantic.)
The designs and info about Luisa’s family!!
Tumblr media
Luissaaaaa!! Luisa is a pretty calm person (thanks to her husband) though with 1 person she is someone else. She doesn’t remember her father at all but every mention of him saddens her up easily. She has a bad relationship with Alma since Mirabel’s disappearance. She’s blaming Alma on it and is always in a fight with her. Luisa is a very kind and good mother, she cares more about her kids than anything she has. Giving birth to her children, julieta, pepa and Bruno was hard, mostly because mirabel wasn’t there, but also because of exhaustion. In her wedding mirabel was there, since she got married way earlier than Isabela. Luisa constantly lives in pressure and guilt, she misses her baby sister very much, her relationship with Isabela is great tough, she can’t handle both of her sisters gone yk?
She often wishes her kids to be closer and not mean to each other because she doesn’t want one of them to be gone one day and the others feeling like she had left. Luis is very thankful to have a husband like Diego, in her teens Diego was her life saver, the only other one than mirabel who could keep her calm. He has the purest heart in Luisa’s mind, she wonders what she would’ve done without him. And she ofc loves her pet birds too!! You can guess who they look like ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Julieta, the oldest triplet, has it the worst of them. She keeps getting pressured which revolves her into forcing herself getting past her own limits. Julieta has many chores daily who take a lot of hard work and time. She gets help sometimes by her father or Tia, she never complains but she tells them that she can do it herself often too cause she fears them being disappointed. Julieta gets bad sleep which makes her get eye bags but she doesn’t want anyone to know, so she hides them with makeup, but because of her lack of sleep she falls asleep anywhere and anytime. Anywhere and anytime literally. The only one who knows about her struggles is her secret boyfriend agustin!! She knows she’s too “young” for love but she never can stop herself from loving him. He cares for her and does everything for her often which is so charming for her, he keeps her up on everything and daily brings her rare flowers he has picked up for her.
Julieta has a bad relationship with her siblings, well, more with pepa. Pepa and her are always fighting, she doesn’t know what pepa has against her but it makes her upset. She’s left out often and bullied by pepa. Her life gets harder with those burdens on her. Bruno is still on okay terms with her but he leaves her out too (mostly because of pepa) and he’s akward to her which makes her feel like she’s boring. Being the “best grandkid” isn’t so great. Also her hair is inspired by isabela’s!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pepa is feisty teenager. She is a mood but it’s not her fault often. Pepa has a lot of free time which she actually doesn’t like that much, she wishes her chores could be more but her gift isn’t that special. She is only friends with 2 people because she is bad with other teens, they either mock her, betray her or straight up do something bad. That’s why she only needs her 2 besties, Bruno and Félix! She loves Félix more than just best friends but she fears that if she steps out of line that she’s gonna destroy her friendship with him so she does everything to keep quiet. Pepa hates julieta with her guts, she hates how julieta gets all the paise, how she gets more chores, more people liking her. She hates everything about her. So she will make it visible.
Pepa is often like an forgotten child who never can find herself, she cares about her looks too much because of others or so that others could at least notice her. Though who she deeply loves are her primo Camilo and Bruno, they both make sure they’re here for her and pepa loves to prank people with his primo or make people scared with his brother very much. She was the one who was the happiest when they found out Dolores was a girl, she always treats Dolores like an little sister and is happy to have her too. She’s also a major daddy’s girl like Dolores used to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruno who is done with his life is still holding on! He is pretty sassy but not the mean kind. Like his siblings he gets picked on too but his mama makes sure that they stop doing it to them and everyone fears Luisa so they pretty much stop. He only has little chores and he loves his free time, his gift is awful and he hates it often. He spends most of his free time napping or dealing with pepa’ a shit. He loves pepa, but being dragged here from there, the entire time and then needing to be there for her the entire time can be exhausting too. He feels very bad for julieta, he knows about her lack of sleep but he doesn’t say anything. (He’s scared pepa will do something.) Bruno is also the one who remembers the most from their Tia mirabel, he also loves his Tia, and her disappearance broke him a lot.
He feels very targeted by his grandmother but his mom always makes him feel better. He’s very much a mama’s boy like Camilo, he has often a mother-son lunch with Luisa and they just talk about anything. He still loves his dad very much!! He’s great friends with Antonio too! He loves to hang out with Antonio a lot, just finding him cool and chilling mostly. Sometimes he also likes to babysit Dolores, she gives him a lot of peace or never trouble. (His greatest friends are his rats)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Diego my beloved is one of the sweetest man is the Encanto. He is an amazing husband an amazing father. His job is creating class, either if it’s shapes, decorations, plates etc. he wasn’t much of an approval of Alma but that doesn’t stop him from being included in the family. He’s a chubby and short dude so often Luisa picks him up like a teddy bear and carries him around while snuggling him. He makes sure Luisa doesn’t exhaust herself or eats and drinks, the same goes for his kids too. Diego got raised by a single dependented mother, his protectiveness came from her and he wouldn’t hesitate to stand up for his family members.
Diego was good friends with mirabel too, her disappearance makes him feel a bit lonely sometimes but he handles it. (Not really)
Sooo any thoughts about Luisa’s fam fam?
Picture Perfect...?
The Madrigals were all doing their own things today.
It had been 3 months since the Casita crashed, and the rebuild. They had all become closer than ever! Feeling like they've truly reunited properly.
Of course, they still had secrets...
Dolores, was sat in the main room, next to Mariano. Dolores was listening with excitement as Mariano spoke, his voice like music to her ears.
Camilo, was with Antonio, upstairs. They were running do the halls, Antonio was riding his Jaguar, parce, as Camilo tried to keep up.
Isabela was sat on her vine swing, decorated with new plants. She was tripping up Camilo every now an again by growing random plants.
Luisa was relaxing in a hammock, a drink in hand, her donkey-unicorn stuffie in the hammock next to her. Both laying in the sun.
Pepa was stood with Felix, both were charring by the bottom of the stairs, their conversation going unheard by the other Madrigals,
but it was clearly happy and loving, since Pepa's cheek were practically painted pink, and the sun was shining above the town, and Felix was sporting his loving, flirtatious smile at his wife, speaking to her in Spanish.
Bruno was sat in his bedroom, redecorating.
Julieta was sat outside with Agustìn, both enjoying the nice weather.
Alma was sat in the kitchen, sipping a cup of coffee as she read a book, a romance. But she wouldn't admit that.
And Mirabel was setting the plates for dinner.
"Mirabel, dinner isn't for a few hours yet?" Alma says, her head tilting up, her eyes going from her book to her granddaughter who had just finished setting the plates.
"Well, I like getting ready early, this way we don't spend time putting the plates out during dinner." Mirabel explains.
"And we repaired Tio Bruno's old plate! We wanna surprise him at dinner!" Mirabel smiles excitedly, her usual cheerfulness, radiating from her like light did from the sun.
"He'll love it, Nieta. How about you go play with your cousins? Or sisters?" Alma suggests, but it was more like an order.
"But I need -" Mirabel's excuse was cut short.
"No. No, I won't hear any of that, go enjoy the nice day -"
The sound of glass shattering filled the house, everyone jumped.
Pepa picked up thr photo, it was of Antonio's ceremony.
"Camilo! Antonio! You both need to be careful!" Pepa scolded her younger children, a cloud growing over her head.
"Mi Vida, look." Felix whispers, taking the picture, showing his wife. "Where's Mirabel? She isn't in the photograph."
At this, the entire family started to crowd around, peering at the picture.
"Mirabel?" Antonio asks, looking up, the entire family copied. They looked at Mirabel, who was stood at the entrance of the kitchen, her hands clasped infront of her, a nervous look on her face, as if she had done something wrong.
"Mirabel, why aren't you in the picture?" Pepa asks, her voice carried confusion and a hint of sadness.
Mirabel looked away, her fingers interlaced before her hands moved to her to her side.
"W, well, you all were really excited, a and I wasn't included, I don't have a gift, I guess you all just forgot to include me, but I get why, I mean, you need to have a gift to be a Madrigal!" Mirabel says quickly, her hands moving as she spoke, moving with her voice.
As Mirabel spoke, the look on the Madrigals' faces slowly turned to stunned sadness.
Pepa's clowd turned dark and a light drizzle started to pour down.
"M, mirabel, we forgot you?" *Julieta asked, staring at her daughter. "Why didn't you say? We could've redone it." She says. Walking up to her daughter.
"Well, you were all really happy, a and I didn't wanna be a bother, so I just...stayed quiet." Mirabel says.
"Oh Miraboo." Agustìn says lovingly and sadly, using her nickname only he could say, he hugged his daughter tightly.
"You could never be a bother. You're a part of the familia Madrigal!" He smiles, trying to lighten the mood.
"This won't do." Alma says firmly, her hands clasped together, the entire family looked up to their Matriarch, waiting for her to continue.
"Next week. We will have a party, for Mirabel's sixteenth birthday." Alma says, then looks directly at Mirabel "And Mirabel, you will be the centre of the photo." Alma says firmly but kindly, showing she genuinely meant her words. "We missed your gift ceremony, and your Quinceara. We will have to fix that."
"You really don't have to!" Mirabel tried to change their minds, but the family was already brainstorming.
"Out! The future birthday girls cannot hear the plan!" Camilo says, ushering Mirabel to the kitchen.
Mirabel chuckled. She knew her family was trying to make up for it all.
Familia Madrigal was healing. And it would take time
But they'd slowly heal the cracks.
How Disney promoted Encanto: Come see Encanto! Disney’s newest fun and cute movie with amazing songs and adorable charm! It’s so cute and wholesome you’ll love it! ☺️💕
Encanto: HELP my husband got murdered right in front of me years ago and I had to raise three children on my own as well as help this huge community who now looks up to me so I can’t show any weakness or make ANY mistakes I have to be stern and pretend I’m fine so now I have to be stern on my entire family and make them go through the same! Help I’m in this magical family and everyone has a power all expect for me and I feel outcasted like I don’t belong at all and I don’t contribute to my family at all but I LOVE them and I want to help I just don’t know what to do or how to find my place I feel like a burden and feel lost! Help I’m the perfect golden child who’s been forced to be perfect my entire life and practically had NO control for this role that was picked for me and in that trauma my relationship with my sister became strained because we don’t understand one another, I think she’s in the way and she thinks I’m SO perfect when I’m not I don’t even want this! Help I’m supposed to be the STRONG one but I feel like I’m slipping down the drain, I’m so emotional and if I mess up then I’ll be a FAILURE and I can’t have that I’m supposed to be strong one even though I feel like I’m worthless if I can’t do anything I just want to help and serve my purpose but I’m so scared because EVERYONE counts on me and I don’t want to let anyone down! Help I can never feel my emotions or let them out because I have this cloud over my head so I have to keep it all in as best as I can even though there’s so much I want to express and so many things I feel but I have to restrain myself and be perfect or our house will have a hurricane! Help I’m the bad omen uncle who left my family for 10 years because everyone saw my visions as negative therefor saw ME as a negative person and I never helped anyone I love my family but I was just hurting them in the process like how I ruined my sisters wedding so I became distant with my own family until I saw my niece in a vision and since everyone sees my visions as negative, I had to leave to protect her but I never left my family because I love them I stayed in the walls for 10 years eating dinner with them every day secretly even though they stopped talking about me and never knew I was here the whole time! Help I’m only 5 years old but I feel like I’m going to let my family down I don’t know what I’m doing or how this works, will I mess up? Will I be unlike my amazing cousins and siblings? I’m so nervous! Help I was born alongside the golden child so all the attention was on her while I have to be quiet and I can literally hear EVERYTHING and she’s getting married to a man I have a crush on but I can’t say anything I have to sit back and watch it unfold no one ever asks what I WANT, they only want to know what I hear! Help I’m-
Me: OKAY STOP ENOUGH! 😭
Standing next to your mother and father, you kept your head down as she knocked on the large doors of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. You looked up when someone opened and watched in awe as a tall man with brown hair walked out. He smiled warmly at you and your parents before waving them inside.
"I am Hank, the Professor is expecting you. I'll take you to his office." The young man said as he led you into the school.
You followed him through the halls until they finally came to a stop in front of a door that you presumed to be the Professor's office, whoever he was.
"Enter..." A voice from the other side spoke, and Hank opened the door for you, your other, and your father to enter.
Behind a desk was a man, he had brown wavy hair and striking blue eyes. When you met his gaze, he smiled warmly. "Welcome, you three must be the L/Ns," He said politely, before looking at your mother and father. "What can I help you with?"
Your mother and father both looked hesitant, but your father stepped forward. "We'd like to enroll our daughter in the school," Your father said nervously. "She's very intelligent, but... She's been having trouble with her uh..." Your father trailed off.
Your mother popped in, "Her powers... They are rather hard to deal with if I have to be honest with you. We're hoping this will help her... Condition."
The Professor pursed his lips, "Well, I would gladly help her." He began before continuing, "Could you please add to what makes this hard, so I can further understand more, please?" He asked and your mother continued.
"Well, she went through all of her schooling fine, but she began acting up, I would say, during the end of high school and college. She doesn't work and she lives with her father and I..." Your mother trailed off again, unsure how to continue.
The Professor interjected, "Do you mind if I ask why?" He asked, and your mother looked down. "Are you worried about something?"
"Well, we were told that it could be due to these powers." Your mother said as she gestured towards you, who just stood there, arms wrapped around yourself.
"Dear, how about you grab your things from the car?" Your father asked and you quickly nodded, before leaving the room and going down the hall and out the main doors where you jogged to the car.
Letting out a sigh, you finally let go of your powers, not having to feel the uncomfortable tight sensation anymore. A gray cloud floated above your head, as you began to grab your two small suitcases. Shutting the trunk, you began wheeling your two bags to the doors, once more. Before you entered, you held your breath, closing your eyes as you pushed your powers back down.
Looking up, you sighed as the cloud was gone and you re-entered the building, walking to the office once more, you heard your mother and father's voice, causing you to stop.
"You see, we just can't watch her anymore. It's draining us." Your mother said, and your father continued, "Our daughter's condition even has the both of us debating on divorce."
"I'm sorry to hear that." The Professor said apologetically. "But, perhaps we can help." His voice trailed off as he looked at the paperwork in front of him, before looking back up at your parents, "Don't worry, I'll do everything in my power to help your daughter."
As your mother and father exited the office, you stood there, trying to be as emotionless as possible as they gave you one last look before speeding out of the school. The Professor wheeled out of his office, before stopping beside you, startling you for a moment.
"Well, they seem... Nice" He stated, and you nodded, "Why don't you come inside my office? I would like to hear your end to all of this."
You followed him into the office, sitting down at the desk as he wheeled to his side across from you. "So, what's your name? Your parents didn't say." He asked.
"I'm... Y/N" You replied, and he nodded, before continuing.
"Y/N, That's a lovely name." The Pressor spoke with a small smile, "You can call me Charles, now what's your story?"
You shifted in your seat, unable to look the man in the eyes. He was handsome, there was no doubt about it. And, his accent, oh god, your heart raced at the sound of it. "My parents..." You started, but you stopped, biting your lip.
"Please, I know it may be difficult to talk about, just tell me what you are comfortable talking about."
You nodded, clearing your throat. "Well, I was able to get through my schooling. Even in college, it was hard because of my... Powers." You explained, and Charles nodded.
"I see, I take it these 'powers' are related to the cloud?" He asked, and you nodded before your eyes widened and you looked up, seeing the cloud above your head.
You tried to swat it away, but Charles stopped you. "Why are you doing that?" He asked and you stopped, shrugging.
"It's annoying, it's always there unless I'm happy and I have to suppress it or people will make fun of me."
Charles narrowed his eyes, "Have people made fun of you?" He asked, and you hesitantly nodded.
"Because... it's weird and I can't hide it well."
"Well, I don't think it's weird." Charles began with a smile. "I think it's fascinating." He paused, and then continued, "And, I think you should wear it proudly."
You looked at him confused, before realizing he was referring to the cloud. "Oh...!" You exclaimed and looked down shyly. "I... I just think it causes too much trouble."
"What can you do?" Charles asked curiously.
"Um, well, I..." You thought for a moment, before speaking. "I can control it, it's just hard sometimes." You added, and Charles nodded, seemingly understanding. "My emotions control the cloud. If I don't have control of my emotions, I don't have control of the cloud. If that makes sense."
The Professor nodded. "Yes, that does make perfect sense. Can you show me?"
You took a deep breath, before answering. "I... I don't know."
"Why not?" Charles asked, and you shrugged.
"I don't want to. I could ruin everything."
"Y/N, I assure you, this is going to help you." He assured, and you looked at him, trying to gauge if he was lying.
"By practicing, you'll learn to control it. We can do our first lesson now." He offered and you looked down, sighing softly.
"Okay." You agreed, and Charles smiled, nodding.
"Good. Now, you said it goes along with your emotions... Think about something sad for me." He instructed and you closed your eyes, trying to think, before recalling a memory.
During middle school, some kids were making fun of you. It made you very angry. They would call you names and tease you. It took all of your might not to let your cloud out.
"Fascinating..." Charles spoke up, making you open your eyes.
Looking at him, he was looking up at your cloud, seeing as it quietly thundered. "Y/N. It's enchanting, really."
You blushed and looked down, taking another deep breath before looking back up at Charles, your cheeks heating up even more. "I was so mad." You admitted, before letting out a small laugh, your cloud slowly becoming a fluffy white.
"So when you are angry, you thunder..." Charles stated, and you nodded in response.
"When I'm sad, it rains," You continued, "But if my emotions are too big or loud or whatever, it's hard to control."
"I see," Charles said as he nodded again. "Has it ever gone out of control?"
You looked up at him, surprised. "Yes... At my aunt's wedding."
Charles nodded, clasping his hands together on his desk. "What happened?" He reminded you of a therapist.
And, yet, he was so easy to talk to.
"One of my cousins was making fun of me and I began thundering and I may or may not accidentally started a hurricane and ruined the wedding." You answered with a shrug, and Charles hummed.
"Well, I know that I can help you. If you allow me to, that is?" He offered and you looked up at him, unsure.
"Can you?" You asked timidly, and he nodded.
"Yes, I'd love to help you. So, what do you say?" He asked, looking at you with a soft smile.
You sat back in your seat. "Alright," You whispered, and Charles smiled warmly.
"Great, then let's begin." He said, standing up and motioning to you to follow. "I'll show you to your new room."
You got up, grabbed your bags, and did as he asked, following him down a long hall to a closed door near the end of the hallway. Opening the door, you smiled slightly at the sight of it. It was a nice-sized room, with a queen-sized bed, closet, and bathroom attached.
"This will be your room. All the students have the upstairs, but since you won't be going to classes, you'll be on the same floor as the other teachers. I hope it is to your liking." He commented, and you nodded, unzipping your bag and setting your things on the bed. "And, if you need anything, you know where my office is. After you settle in, I'll have Storm show you around."
"Thank you." You said, and Charles nodded before taking your hand in his, making you blush.
“I hope you like it here, Y/N.” He spoke before leaving and shutting the door behind him.
You blinked, looking at your hand before sitting down on your new bed, you let out a sigh and smiled. Looking up, you saw your cloud above you. You looked it over for a few moments, before getting up and walking to your closet. You began to put away your things. Finally, you felt free and happy.
Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Ten
Tumblr media
“Ah! Sorry- sorry I didn’t mean to- uh-” He stops not knowing what to say. Mirabel was so surprised that she stopped shaking and her breathing slowed.
“Tio Bruno…? What are you doing here?”
“Well- um, I kind of live here? Unless you mean like- like in this area which is because I heard someone in the passageways, and then I saw my vision and you know uh, yeah.”
“Oh.. um, what do you mean live here? How?”
“It’s a bit hard to explain, it might be easier for me to just show you.” He says offering his hand, Mirabel takes it, pulling herself up. He takes her through the passageways to his “room.” Mirabel walks by and sees cracks that are covered in cement.
“Are you patching up the cracks?”
“Oh! No no no no no, I don’t go near those. All the patching is done by Hernando.”
“Who is Hernan-” Bruno puts up his cape and says,
“I’m Hernando and I’m afraid of nothing!” he pauses, “It’s actually me, I say my real gift was ‘acting,’ haha.” Mirabel looks at him and she can’t decide whether to find it funny, charming or concerning.
“I’m Jorge, I make the spackle,” Bruno says. Mirabel decides she should probably be concerned. They make it into Bruno's room. It’s filled with rats messing with his stuff, and his room is small and covered in small things he’d collected over the years.
“You never left?”
“Well, I left my tower- a lot of stairs you know. It’s kitchen adjacent, and-” He goes over to the television, “free entertainment! Telenovelas!” He says as he flips through different cutouts for the rats. He sits down on his red chair.
“Their love could never be.”
“I don’t understand, why did you leave, but not actually leave?”
“Well, free food, and uh ya know.” He just shrugs. Mirabel looks through a hole in the wall to see the dining table, and then looks at a small table that’s labeled with his name, showing that he uses it to pretend like he’s still a part of the family. Bruno stands up and walks behind her.
“Yeah, my gift wasn’t really helping the family, but, I love my family, ya know?” Bruno says. Mirabel nods and looks at the vision in her arms.
“Nobody was ever meant to see that vision.”
“Why- why did you take the vision?”
“Well, after you didn’t get your gift Abuela was worried about the magic and asked me to take a vision. When I saw the vision I knew how it was going to look, because I’m Bruno and everyone always assumes the worst, so.. So I left.”
“You left… for me?”
“I mean not just that, but yeah I guess. You are my niece after all.” Mirabel smiled sadly, just happy that he cared that much.
“Thank you, Tio.”
“Ah- no don’t- I uh, you don’t need to,” he stumbled.
“I feel like I should though. I messed up Isabella’s proposal and now I’m hiding in here instead of facing Abuela. I know I don’t have a gift but I love my family and I just want to help.”
“You are helping.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do know sobrina. I still know a little about what goes on in the Casita. You’re doing fine. Whatever is happening with Isabella, it’ll be ok.”
“Gracias Tio,” Mirabel says as she hugs him. He awkwardly hugs back,
“Anytime, kid.”
“I think I know what I need to do. I need to apologize to Isabella.” She says as she goes to leave but Bruno stops her.
“Wait, before you go, if you save the miracle, could you visit sometime?”
“When I save the miracle, I’m bringing you home,” Mirabel says confidently. Bruno smiles and then knocks on a bunch of wood as Mirabel leaves.
Mirabel walks up to Isabella’s door, and a lot of emotions run through her, debating if this was the right decision. She goes into the room anyway to see an angry Isabella.
“What are you doing here?!” She says irritated.
“I came to apologize.”
“I’m listening.”
“I’m sorry for ruining your proposal, I’m going to talk to Mariano and try to fix this.”
“Don’t bother.”
“Why?”
“It’s not like he’ll change his mind.”
“You don’t know that- Do you… want to marry Mariano?” Isabella looks surprised at the question and thinks.
“I- I mean yeah. It’s good for the Ecanto, and Abuela-”
“I’m not asking about that, I’m asking if you want to marry Mariano.”
“I don’t know. I mean, I thought I was fine with it, but now- now that I have a chance out… I don’t know.”
“Why would you marry someone you don’t love?” Mirabel asks.
“Well, I don’t really want to get married, but Abuela just seemed so happy when Mariano and I started getting along. When she suggested getting engaged, I-”
“-Wanted to make her proud?”
“Yeah. I don’t know why I’m even telling you this. You know Abuela is livid right now? Mami and Papi were arguing with her and everyone’s looking for you.”
“Oh… well, I’m sorry. For all of this. I hope that you can get the ending that you want. I think I need to talk to Abuela,” Mirabel says. Isabella nods,
“It’s fine I guess. You kind of gave me a chance out, so thank you.” Isabella says. Mirabel walks out of the room and goes to talk to her Abuela, though she runs into her mami first.
“Mirabel! There you are!” she says as she pulls her youngest daughter into a hug.
“Hola mami.”
“I don’t know what’s going on. Your Abuela is being unreasonable and there are cracks littered around the house. I don’t understand.”
“I think it’s the miracle mami. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but I need to talk to Abuela,” Mirabel asserts. Julietta just nods and lets her youngest go. Mirabel goes to the living room to see Abuela talking with Senora Guzman. She goes up to both of them, and Senora Guzman sees her first.
“Mirabel,” she says. Abuela turns around to see her youngest granddaughter, anger written all over her face.
“You need to fix this,” Abuela says.
“Lo siento Abuela. I won’t. Isabella-”
“What?! Don’t disrespect me.”
“I didn’t mean-”
“No, you listen to me. I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift but it is not an excuse to hurt this family.” Abuela says with venom. To Mirabel, it feels like a stab in her heart. Senora Guzman looks shocked. Her Papi comes to see what’s going on while Dolores and Camilo were sitting on the couch nearby. Tia Pepa and Felix were near the kitchen.
“I will never be good enough for you… will I? No matter how I try- No matter how hard everyone tries! Luisa will never be strong enough! Isabella will never be perfect enough! Tio Bruno left because you always saw the worst in him!”
“Bruno did not care about this family!” Cracks begin to form on the walls and ceiling.
“He loves this family, I love this family, we all love this family! You’re the one that doesn’t care.”
“Don’t you ever-!”
“The Miracle is dying because of you!” As Mirabel finishes her sentence the house begins to fall apart. Mirabel runs straight for the candle, while Casita tries to help her while also pushing everyone out of the house. Everyone is yelling at her to stop, telling her it’s not worth it. She continues though. As she goes up she sees her Tio Bruno escape the house with a bucket on his head, and she smiles slightly to herself. She makes it to the candle but the house is too far gone. Casita’s last efforts are covering Mirabel with furniture to protect her. The Casita was gone, all that was left was the rubble of what it once was. Mirabel holds the unlit candle as her Mami runs over to her.
“Mirabel! What were you thinking?! Are you hurt?” Julieta says while checking her, Mirabel is despondent, still looking at the candle. Julietta looks at her daughter, who had dropped the candle on the ground, and then back out hearing her hermana call her.
“I’ll be right back- don’t move,” Julietta says as she runs towards her hermana.
When most of the fog clears and most of the familia is together, they realize that Mirabel is gone. They call out to her but there’s no response. Everyone goes looking for her, including Abuela. After hours of searching it just so happens that Abuela ended up finding her, she found her holding her knees to her chest while crying next to a lake she knew too well. She walks up to Mirabel and sits beside her.
“I’m sorry, I- I just wanted to help. Instead, all I ended up doing was hurting us.” Mirabel says as she cries into her knees.
“No, it’s not you. Mirabel, this is on me. You are a child, I’m an adult. Ever since we got our miracle I’ve tried so hard to give back to the world. Why out of all people did I deserve a miracle? Instead, I’ve been so focused on the miracle that, now that it’s gone, I can see clearly. Mi familia, they are the most important thing. Not the candle, mi familia. So truly, I’m so sorry Mirabel. I don’t deserve forgiveness yet, but I’ll do my best.” Abuela says as her hand glides against the current. Mirabel looks over to Abuela and pulls her into a hug.
“I could never stay mad at you, of course, I forgive you. You’re mi Abuela, you’re one of the bravest women I’ve ever met.”
“Gracias Mirabel, you’re too kind.” They break from the hug as Bruno jumps through the bushes with a horse, and jumps off.
“Don’t blame her! I gave her a vision-” he says before his mami pulls him into a hug.
“Oh mi Brunito, I missed you. I’m so sorry I pushed you away.” She says as she squeezes him tightly. He wheezes,
“I think I missed something.” He smiles sheepishly as all three of them jump on the horse.
“Mirabel! Mija I was so worried!” Julietta exclaimed as she pulled Mirabel into a tight hug.
“Lo siento Mami,” Mirabel says while muffled by her mother’s arms. The familia gathers, happy that Mirabel was found and the entire familia was together. After Mirabel was released from Julietta’s death grip, Antonio jumped on her, Mirabel caught him and hugged him as well. From behind the horse came both Abuela and Bruno. Julietta and Pepa both look to see their brother, Pepa goes up to him first and slaps him in the face, and then pulls him into a hug.
“Don’t you ever do that again pendejo,” she says. Bruno awkwardly hugs her back.
“Lo siento hermana..” he says, not sure if she’s happy he’s back or angry he left. Pepa let him go and then Julietta hugged him as well.
“Welcome back hermano,” Julietta says.When the familia was reunited they realized they needed to figure out a plan as to where they were staying, and how they were going to rebuild their home. Despite earlier events, the townspeople all came to help including the Guzmans. Multiple people had guestrooms for the family to stay, Senora Gabriela had two guestrooms that Mirabel and Bruno took, the Garcias had a guest room that Julietta and Agustin stayed in, the Lopeses had one spare bedroom with two beds that both Isabella and Luisa too, the Guzmans had two extra guest rooms, which Pepa and Felix shared one, while Antonio took the other, Lastly the Gomezes had two extra bedrooms that Dolores and Camilo stayed in. The family was really grateful to all the townspeople, but they insisted because the Madrigals had helped them so much over the years. Plans were made for the next day of clearing the rubble from the area, while also planning out the blueprints for the Casita. That night though, the Madrigals got some much-needed sleep, at least most of them. Mirabel couldn’t sleep no matter how hard she tried, despite the apology from her Abuela, which she was elated about, her negative thoughts still flooded her brain. It was almost as if they got worse. Did she deserve to be apologized to? Does she deserve forgiveness? The more she lay in a bed that was not her own, the louder the thoughts became.
Mirabel gets injured 1
* It wasn’t suppose to happen
* Nothing like that should have happen
* But the family could never forget the blood
* Or Antonio’s cries
* Or Julieta’s scream…
* The day was starting as usual
* It was six months until Antonio’s ceremony and the family was having a usual day at in town
* Nothing was wrong
* But an accident happen
* It shouldn’t have, the donkeys got out and they were more rowdier than usual, they were going all over the town bumping into stalls and almost going into stores
* They were getting closer to the center as Luisa tried her best to round them up quickly
* Mirabel was carrying Antonio to where Felix and Pepa were at, it was at the center of the town where there was a new house being made for a young couple
* “Mami” Antonio wave from where he was in Mirabel’s arms
* Pepa and Felix turned and wave back as Pepa went toward the duo to take Antonio
* The donkey came messing up the entire construction
* The donkey ran all over the site knocking down wooden pools makes the workers run away in fear of something happening
* The rest of the family came running with Luisa to the site
* Felix was telling them to get away
* A beam holding two giant wood planks came down right where Mirabel and Antonio was
* Pepa open her mouth to warn them, she scream as she move to get to them out of the way
* But Mirabel was quicker ”Tia here!”she threw Antonio to his Mami
* As if in slow motion the family watched as the beam fell
* Right on top of Mirabel
I am slowly digging myself into the angst side of the fandom…
Here's something angsty for you (again)
Preemie baby Mirabel dies. She cought a disease and being a preemie and weaker than other children her age poor baby succumbs to the sickness and passed away. She died at maybe 6-7 months old. Bonus angst points if she died in her mothers arms. Yeah...Juli might take a while to recover from that. But hey you are an expert in messing with Julieta's sanity so....what do you think?
.............. I hate you– anyWAY– YOU MADE ME DO IT AND NOW, LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES!
you try to stop it tumbling
cw: infant death
Mirabel is a small baby. She is a sickly baby. She is a weak baby that constantly needs her mamá near.
But Mirabel is also a very happy baby. She is the reason there's so much happiness in their Casita. She's the apple of her Abuela's eye, she's her mother's precious light.
Julieta knows her youngest daughter has it hard. She lost count of how many times Mirabel was sick - whether it was just a cold, cough, fever or the flu. She's so young, barely seven months old, not even walking yet, and she has been through more than any of her sisters or cousins at this age.
She's smaller than other babies her age. Her every milestone happens later than Camilo's, and when Julieta compares their development – having in mind they're two months apart, but the thing with Julieta was: she always kept a record of every Madrigal kid's development, something that was a small obsession connected to the nature of her gift, probably – she can't help but worry.
Mirabel hasn't started teething yet. She has just learned how to sit without toppling over, and she's in love with her toys - that is, when she has the energy to play.
That's what worries Julieta the most. The lack of energy, even when her appetite is great - it nearly rivals Camilo's infinite hunger. Yet despite eating so much, she looks more like a 5-month-old and often is very sleepy.
And when Mirabel is sleepy, she's also very clingy and loves to cuddle, so Julieta keeps her close, most of the time. Mirabel loves to nap against her chest, always resting her head full of dark, short curly hair over Julieta's heart, finding its beating calming.
At times like those, Julieta finds it in herself to smile. To bow her head and kiss Mirabel's soft hair, stroke her back, hold her tiny hand and feel like her small fingers clench around her bigger ones.
At times like those, she feels everything would be alright.
All hopes fade away one evening when Julieta is cooking dinner with Mirabel sleeping against her chest, her breathing uneven and raspy because she has a cold again. Bruno bursts into the kitchen, out of breath and panting, and she looks at him in concern.
"Bruno–" she stops when he walks closer and she sees that his face is wet. He's crying, she realises, and her heart starts beating faster. She can't remember the last time she saw him crying. "What happened?"
Bruno's wide hazel eyes flicker to Mirabel resting in her arms, then back to her, and she sees the trembling of his hands. She has a growing suspicion because he's so easy to read sometimes, and she doesn't like what her mind is telling her, but she's waiting for his answer.
A few seconds pass, and Bruno still doesn't say anything. Finally, he reaches with his hands under his ruana and pulls out a glimmering slab of emerald glass. Julieta knows she's shaking her head even before she sees the picture engraved in it.
"Lo siento, Juli," Bruno whispers and lays the glass on the counter. "I didn't mean to– I'm so sorry."
He's babbling but she doesn't listen. She looks down and before her mind can grasp what she's seeing, her arms hug her daughter closer - closer to her body, closer to her beating heart, as if she can keep the girl safe and sound this way.
On the glass, she sees herself. She sees herself crying and screaming, with tears flowing down her face, with a small, limp body in her arms.
She's sobbing, she knows. Bruno's saying something, Mirabel stirs against her and she feels two small fists tightening on her blouse, then there's a sound of thunder, two babies start crying at one, and she feels someone's arms around her but all she can do is staring at the picture of herself with Mirabel's dead body in her arms.
The image haunts her for days.
Every cough, every sneeze, every rejection of food from Mirabel – all these things are fueling her paranoia and her fear.
Members of their family try to reason with her. Bruno hasn't spoken with her since the day he gave her vision, Agustín soothes her that Bruno's visions aren't set in stone, Mamá assures her that her healing food would help Mirabel if something happens, her girls try to make her and Mirabel smile on every occasion and Pepa tries to distract her, though there's a small grey cloud following her ever since she too saw their brother's vision.
Two weeks pass and Julieta finally let herself calm down a little. Mirabel is fine, though she started teething and it makes her feverish and grumpy, but Julieta can deal with that. She managed with her other daughters and she knows the best method that would surely work for Mirabel.
But then, one day, Mirabel's fever goes worse.
Julieta notices it when she wakes up in the morning on her own, instead of being woken up by Mirabel as has been a norm for many weeks now. She walks over to her youngest's bed and reaches out to her, and she almost gasps at how warm Mirabel is.
She immediately rushes to get damp towels to lower the temperature, she takes all steps she needs to make her daughter feel better. Her mamá and sister come into the room not that much later and try to calm her down.
"You had been so miserable when you were teething, mija," mamá says, sending Julieta a fond look. "Feverish, grumpy, less active. I was worried you caught something but it eventually passed. Mirabel must have taken after you."
But Julieta only sniffs, biting back a sob that threatens to escape her throat. She knows there are tears in her eyes but she can't help it, she's worried. She remembers Bruno's vision–
"She doesn't want to eat. She woke up for a few minutes and came back to sleep," she complains, hugging Mirabel closer to her chest. "I don't know what to do."
"Let her rest. She has a fever, she needs it."
"But I need to feed her. She hasn't eaten since around midnight and it's almost ten–"
"Give her another hour or two," Pepa says softly, though her cloud is still hovering over her head - a clear sign she's no less worried than Julieta. "I bet she'll feel better then."
Julieta nods with great reluctance. She doesn't like it at all, but what more she can do?
Two hours pass quickly. Julieta is in the kitchen and Agustín keeps her company when she's preparing dinner. He holds their daughter on his lap. Mirabel is awake but her head rests heavily against her father's chest.
The sight both brings Julieta relief and makes her extremely anxious.
She managed to feed Mirabel a little. She ate for only five minutes but it's better than nothing, and now her youngest's tired brown eyes follow the plushie butterfly's movement as Agustín tries to have her attention to playing.
But Mirabel doesn't make any grabby hands as she always would. She just sits there and stares, coughing weakly once in a while or whimpering when someone brushes their fingers over her forehead that is still too warm to Julieta's liking.
But she ate... It must be good, right? It means she'll get better very soon, won't she? Pepa said so, Agustín said so, her mamá said so - they must be right.
So she returns to cooking, glancing constantly at her daughter and husband, letting calm herself down by the soft tone of voice Agustín has reserved for their daughters. It makes her smile. She loves to watch him with their girls. He's such a good dad.
"Hey, Miraboo," he says quietly. "Fight this fever because you're giving your Mami grey hairs and you know that's a sore subject for her."
Julieta groans and glares at him. But her exasperation quickly melts when she spots the smallest smile on Mirabel's lips. She hopes it's a good sign.
There's a problem.
Julieta has never been a particularly lucky person, and so in the evening, Mirabel's fever gets even worse. She's fallen asleep rejecting any attempts at feeding her, her breathing is raspy and uneven, and no one knows how to help her.
Julieta is barely functioning overcome with worry, and Agustín is no better, though he hides it well. But she knows him, and she knows he's just as scared.
The kids were put to beds, it's almost ten in the evening, and Julieta sits in the living area with Mirabel on her lap pressed against her, and the adults are talking quietly, trying to distract her.
It doesn't work.
Mirabel's breathing unsettles her and she denied putting her in her crib, insisting on holding her tight. There's a dread in the back of her mind. Bruno's vision is there whenever she closes her eyes. It seems the picture is imprinted onto her eyelids and it doesn't want to go away.
She wants to believe Mirabel will get better tomorrow. She might have been born too early, but she is a fighter. She's lived for seven months, developing a little slower but thriving, being of weak health but of a great personality.
"Te amo, mariposita," Julieta bows her head to kiss Mirabel's locks. "Get better for mamá, hm?"
There's no answer and Julieta didn't expect any. She sighs and rests her head on Agustín's shoulder, her hand drawing circles on Mirabel's back.
She's tired. She wants to sleep but she can't, not when her baby is unwell. But she lets herself close her eyes, trusting it would be just enough to rest a little.
But then–
Then Mirabel's breathing becomes louder. It almost sounds like she's about to cough and Julieta sits straight, looking down at her. "Mirabel?" she asks quietly, rubbing her back, then patting it very lightly to help her cough.
But no cough comes out.
Soon the loud breathing turns into wheezing. This sound gives her shivers and she pulls the girl back, supporting her back, her concern growing. Mirabel's little lips are parted, but her eyes are still closed and the breaths she's emitting sound awful. She has never heard something like that.
"Mira?" she touches her chubby cheek, and then rubs her chest. "Mi amor, wake up!"
The conversation in the room stops but Julieta couldn't care less about it. Her focus is on her daughter only, on her weird breathing, on the unsettling sounds she makes, on the uneven movements of her chest and on the fact she's not waking up.
A few wheezes later and Julieta finally realizes that–
"She can't breathe," she croaks out, then her voice becomes a worried shriek. "Mamá, she can't breathe!"
There's a commotion. Agustín stiffens beside her and she feels his arm on her waist, a low thunder rumbles over their heads and mamá hurries over to where they're sitting. She crouches down in front of them and reaches with her hand to Mirabel's back, rubbing it vigorously.
"Breathe, mi vida," she says, and Julieta can say for the first time that Alma sounds terrified. "Ay Mirabel, breathe, niña, por favor."
But it doesn't work.
Rubbing her back, rubbing her chest - it all doesn't work.
Mirabel's lips turn an unhealthy shade of purplish-blue and Julieta feels like she's dying inside. "Corazón, please, breathe. Breathe for mamá. Breathe for mamá!"
Nothing, only weak wheezes.
"She can't breathe, mamá!" Julieta wails, and her hands tremble. "Mamá, help her! Mamá! She can't breathe–"
Alma looks up at her, utterly terrified but Julieta can't see her through the tears that gathered in her eyes. Everything is blurry. Her baby is suffocating in her arms and she's frozen, she doesn't know what to do, she–
"¡Dios mío!" her mamá chokes out, and her voice is raspy, weak. "Mirabel..."
There's silence.
No coughs, no wheezing, no pats on the back. Nothing.
Julieta looks down. Mirabel doesn't make any sound. Her chest doesn't rise nor fall. Her arms, kept on her stomach just a moment before, now fall down by her sides limply.
"No," she says, and her breathing picks up, her ears ringing. "Mirabel. Mi vida. Wake up. Wake up for mamá. Mi amor..."
But she doesn't.
Julieta shakes her small body and rubs her chest, pleading her to wake up, calling her all cute names, touching her small hands, waiting–
But Mirabel doesn't move. Her lips are purple, her body is limp, and when Julieta runs her hand over her small chest, she can't feel her baby's heartbeat.
"No!" she sobs and brings the unmoving body to her arms, hugging her close, rocking them both. "Mi bebé! Mi bebé, mi bebé, mi bebé..."
The heavy rain suddenly falls all over them, Pepa is sobbing as well and Agustín holds them both, crying into her hair.
And Julieta... She's sitting there with her dead baby in her arms, shaking and wailing.
Just like in Bruno's vision.
“Don’t panic!”
“We traveled back in time! We can’t get back home! I would say this is the perfect time to panic!”
Mirabel swallowed hard as she watched Dolores start to pace back and forth, hands gripping her hair.
“Look, just-… just calm down, okay?” Isabela urged her, although Mirabel noticed she was gripping her hands rather tight. “Alright, it’s not that bad.”
Dolores whipped around to look at her oldest prima, hazel eyes wide. “How is it not that bad?! We’re stuck in 1919!”
“We’re still in Colombia. We’re still in the Encanto. We still have our gifts. This could have been a LOT worse.”
“Isa’s right,” Mirabel added with an eager nod, desperate to help keep calm. “It’s only thirty one years in the past, it’s not like we traveled to America in 1700 or the Antarctic in 1600 and the Encanto doesn’t exist. We just go to Casita and we find the door again.”
“And what do we do when our parents or Abuela asks us who we are?”
“We lie,” Camilo offered with a shrug. “We say we’re orphaned refugees who just found this place. None of us HAVE to use our powers. If Isa can keep control of her flowers then they never have to know.”
“And when Abuela sees her clone in Isa or Mami wonders why this red headed green eyed boy looks exactly like her, what are we gonna say then?”
“I don’t know but we don’t have another choice,” Isa said with a finality that could only come with being the oldest grandchild. “We go to Casita, we ask them for a place to stay, we don’t use our gifts and we tell them nothing about who we are or where we came from.”
