Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Ten
Tumblr media
“Ah! Sorry- sorry I didn’t mean to- uh-” He stops not knowing what to say. Mirabel was so surprised that she stopped shaking and her breathing slowed.
“Tio Bruno…? What are you doing here?”
“Well- um, I kind of live here? Unless you mean like- like in this area which is because I heard someone in the passageways, and then I saw my vision and you know uh, yeah.”
“Oh.. um, what do you mean live here? How?”
“It’s a bit hard to explain, it might be easier for me to just show you.” He says offering his hand, Mirabel takes it, pulling herself up. He takes her through the passageways to his “room.” Mirabel walks by and sees cracks that are covered in cement.
“Are you patching up the cracks?”
“Oh! No no no no no, I don’t go near those. All the patching is done by Hernando.”
“Who is Hernan-” Bruno puts up his cape and says,
“I’m Hernando and I’m afraid of nothing!” he pauses, “It’s actually me, I say my real gift was ‘acting,’ haha.” Mirabel looks at him and she can’t decide whether to find it funny, charming or concerning.
“I’m Jorge, I make the spackle,” Bruno says. Mirabel decides she should probably be concerned. They make it into Bruno's room. It’s filled with rats messing with his stuff, and his room is small and covered in small things he’d collected over the years.
“You never left?”
“Well, I left my tower- a lot of stairs you know. It’s kitchen adjacent, and-” He goes over to the television, “free entertainment! Telenovelas!” He says as he flips through different cutouts for the rats. He sits down on his red chair.
“Their love could never be.”
“I don’t understand, why did you leave, but not actually leave?”
“Well, free food, and uh ya know.” He just shrugs. Mirabel looks through a hole in the wall to see the dining table, and then looks at a small table that’s labeled with his name, showing that he uses it to pretend like he’s still a part of the family. Bruno stands up and walks behind her.
“Yeah, my gift wasn’t really helping the family, but, I love my family, ya know?” Bruno says. Mirabel nods and looks at the vision in her arms.
“Nobody was ever meant to see that vision.”
“Why- why did you take the vision?”
“Well, after you didn’t get your gift Abuela was worried about the magic and asked me to take a vision. When I saw the vision I knew how it was going to look, because I’m Bruno and everyone always assumes the worst, so.. So I left.”
“You left… for me?”
“I mean not just that, but yeah I guess. You are my niece after all.” Mirabel smiled sadly, just happy that he cared that much.
“Thank you, Tio.”
“Ah- no don’t- I uh, you don’t need to,” he stumbled.
“I feel like I should though. I messed up Isabella’s proposal and now I’m hiding in here instead of facing Abuela. I know I don’t have a gift but I love my family and I just want to help.”
“You are helping.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do know sobrina. I still know a little about what goes on in the Casita. You’re doing fine. Whatever is happening with Isabella, it’ll be ok.”
“Gracias Tio,” Mirabel says as she hugs him. He awkwardly hugs back,
“Anytime, kid.”
“I think I know what I need to do. I need to apologize to Isabella.” She says as she goes to leave but Bruno stops her.
“Wait, before you go, if you save the miracle, could you visit sometime?”
“When I save the miracle, I’m bringing you home,” Mirabel says confidently. Bruno smiles and then knocks on a bunch of wood as Mirabel leaves.
Mirabel walks up to Isabella’s door, and a lot of emotions run through her, debating if this was the right decision. She goes into the room anyway to see an angry Isabella.
“What are you doing here?!” She says irritated.
“I came to apologize.”
“I’m listening.”
“I’m sorry for ruining your proposal, I’m going to talk to Mariano and try to fix this.”
“Don’t bother.”
“Why?”
“It’s not like he’ll change his mind.”
“You don’t know that- Do you… want to marry Mariano?” Isabella looks surprised at the question and thinks.
“I- I mean yeah. It’s good for the Ecanto, and Abuela-”
“I’m not asking about that, I’m asking if you want to marry Mariano.”
“I don’t know. I mean, I thought I was fine with it, but now- now that I have a chance out… I don’t know.”
“Why would you marry someone you don’t love?” Mirabel asks.
“Well, I don’t really want to get married, but Abuela just seemed so happy when Mariano and I started getting along. When she suggested getting engaged, I-”
“-Wanted to make her proud?”
“Yeah. I don’t know why I’m even telling you this. You know Abuela is livid right now? Mami and Papi were arguing with her and everyone’s looking for you.”
“Oh… well, I’m sorry. For all of this. I hope that you can get the ending that you want. I think I need to talk to Abuela,” Mirabel says. Isabella nods,
“It’s fine I guess. You kind of gave me a chance out, so thank you.” Isabella says. Mirabel walks out of the room and goes to talk to her Abuela, though she runs into her mami first.
“Mirabel! There you are!” she says as she pulls her youngest daughter into a hug.
“Hola mami.”
“I don’t know what’s going on. Your Abuela is being unreasonable and there are cracks littered around the house. I don’t understand.”
“I think it’s the miracle mami. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but I need to talk to Abuela,” Mirabel asserts. Julietta just nods and lets her youngest go. Mirabel goes to the living room to see Abuela talking with Senora Guzman. She goes up to both of them, and Senora Guzman sees her first.
“Mirabel,” she says. Abuela turns around to see her youngest granddaughter, anger written all over her face.
“You need to fix this,” Abuela says.
“Lo siento Abuela. I won’t. Isabella-”
“What?! Don’t disrespect me.”
“I didn’t mean-”
“No, you listen to me. I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift but it is not an excuse to hurt this family.” Abuela says with venom. To Mirabel, it feels like a stab in her heart. Senora Guzman looks shocked. Her Papi comes to see what’s going on while Dolores and Camilo were sitting on the couch nearby. Tia Pepa and Felix were near the kitchen.
“I will never be good enough for you… will I? No matter how I try- No matter how hard everyone tries! Luisa will never be strong enough! Isabella will never be perfect enough! Tio Bruno left because you always saw the worst in him!”
“Bruno did not care about this family!” Cracks begin to form on the walls and ceiling.
“He loves this family, I love this family, we all love this family! You’re the one that doesn’t care.”
“Don’t you ever-!”
“The Miracle is dying because of you!” As Mirabel finishes her sentence the house begins to fall apart. Mirabel runs straight for the candle, while Casita tries to help her while also pushing everyone out of the house. Everyone is yelling at her to stop, telling her it’s not worth it. She continues though. As she goes up she sees her Tio Bruno escape the house with a bucket on his head, and she smiles slightly to herself. She makes it to the candle but the house is too far gone. Casita’s last efforts are covering Mirabel with furniture to protect her. The Casita was gone, all that was left was the rubble of what it once was. Mirabel holds the unlit candle as her Mami runs over to her.
“Mirabel! What were you thinking?! Are you hurt?” Julieta says while checking her, Mirabel is despondent, still looking at the candle. Julietta looks at her daughter, who had dropped the candle on the ground, and then back out hearing her hermana call her.
“I’ll be right back- don’t move,” Julietta says as she runs towards her hermana.
When most of the fog clears and most of the familia is together, they realize that Mirabel is gone. They call out to her but there’s no response. Everyone goes looking for her, including Abuela. After hours of searching it just so happens that Abuela ended up finding her, she found her holding her knees to her chest while crying next to a lake she knew too well. She walks up to Mirabel and sits beside her.
“I’m sorry, I- I just wanted to help. Instead, all I ended up doing was hurting us.” Mirabel says as she cries into her knees.
“No, it’s not you. Mirabel, this is on me. You are a child, I’m an adult. Ever since we got our miracle I’ve tried so hard to give back to the world. Why out of all people did I deserve a miracle? Instead, I’ve been so focused on the miracle that, now that it’s gone, I can see clearly. Mi familia, they are the most important thing. Not the candle, mi familia. So truly, I’m so sorry Mirabel. I don’t deserve forgiveness yet, but I’ll do my best.” Abuela says as her hand glides against the current. Mirabel looks over to Abuela and pulls her into a hug.
“I could never stay mad at you, of course, I forgive you. You’re mi Abuela, you’re one of the bravest women I’ve ever met.”
“Gracias Mirabel, you’re too kind.” They break from the hug as Bruno jumps through the bushes with a horse, and jumps off.
“Don’t blame her! I gave her a vision-” he says before his mami pulls him into a hug.
“Oh mi Brunito, I missed you. I’m so sorry I pushed you away.” She says as she squeezes him tightly. He wheezes,
“I think I missed something.” He smiles sheepishly as all three of them jump on the horse.
“Mirabel! Mija I was so worried!” Julietta exclaimed as she pulled Mirabel into a tight hug.
“Lo siento Mami,” Mirabel says while muffled by her mother’s arms. The familia gathers, happy that Mirabel was found and the entire familia was together. After Mirabel was released from Julietta’s death grip, Antonio jumped on her, Mirabel caught him and hugged him as well. From behind the horse came both Abuela and Bruno. Julietta and Pepa both look to see their brother, Pepa goes up to him first and slaps him in the face, and then pulls him into a hug.
“Don’t you ever do that again pendejo,” she says. Bruno awkwardly hugs her back.
“Lo siento hermana..” he says, not sure if she’s happy he’s back or angry he left. Pepa let him go and then Julietta hugged him as well.
“Welcome back hermano,” Julietta says. When the familia was reunited they realized they needed to figure out a plan as to where they were staying, and how they were going to rebuild their home. Despite earlier events, the townspeople all came to help including the Guzmans. Multiple people had guestrooms for the family to stay, Senora Gabriela had two guestrooms that Mirabel and Bruno took, the Garcias had a guest room that Julietta and Agustin stayed in, the Lopeses had one spare bedroom with two beds that both Isabella and Luisa too, the Guzmans had two extra guest rooms, which Pepa and Felix shared one, while Antonio took the other, Lastly the Gomezes had two extra bedrooms that Dolores and Camilo stayed in. The family was really grateful to all the townspeople, but they insisted because the Madrigals had helped them so much over the years. Plans were made for the next day of clearing the rubble from the area, while also planning out the blueprints for the Casita. That night though, the Madrigals got some much-needed sleep, at least most of them. Mirabel couldn’t sleep no matter how hard she tried, despite the apology from her Abuela, which she was elated about, her negative thoughts still flooded her brain. It was almost as if they got worse. Did she deserve to be apologized to? Does she deserve forgiveness? The more she lay in a bed that was not her own, the louder the thoughts became.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Nine
Tumblr media
Back at the party, Tonito was having a fun time with his friends and his animal friends. He was so excited to have his own gift and his own room. The only sad part is that he wouldn’t share a room with Mirabel anymore. He looked around and realized he couldn’t find his Mira. He tugged on his mami’s dress.
“Mami, where’s Mira?”
“I don’t know Tonito, why don’t you ask your sister?”
“Ok, gracias.” He said as he ran off to find Dolores, he found her in the back dancing with Camilo. He tapped his sister gently, and she turned around and smiled at him. Though it faltered when she saw the look on his face.
“Do you know where Mira is? I can’t find Mira,” he said with tears in his eyes.
“It’s a bit loud but I should be able to find her,” Dolores said as she closed her eyes and listened. Camilo gently patted Antonio’s head.
“Until she finds her, you can hang out with your super cool older brother.”
“I want Mira,” he said. Camilo deflated a bit,
“Ouch, child’s honesty I guess.”
“Lo siento ‘milo, I just want to see her.”
“I know, no hard feelings,” Camilo said.
“I hear her in the nursery, she’s crying,” Dolores said nonchalantly. Camilo gave her a look.
“What?!” Antonio exclaimed.
“What? I don’t know what you expect. This is the first ceremony since her failed one,” Dolores said. Antonio scrunched his eyebrows,
“I’m going to the nursery.” He said as he walked off. Camilo followed him,
“Wait! Mami will kill me if we leave you alone.”
“Then you can come with me,” Antonio said. They walked to the nursery and Antonio knocked on the door. He could hear her sniffling from the outside.
“Please just… leave,” she said as she wiped the tears off her face. She didn’t want her Mami or Abuela to see her like this.
“Mira, why are you crying?” Mirabel jumped, realizing it was Antonio. She quickly opened the door, her eyes were red from crying, and there were tear stains on her cheeks.
“Tonito? What are you doing here? You should be at your party.”
“I was sad 'cause you weren’t there. Why are you crying? Is it because I got my gift?”
“NO! Never Tonito. I’m so very happy you got your gift, I’m so proud of you. You need to go back though.”
“Why can’t you come?” He asked with pleading eyes.
“I would just ruin the mood,” she laughed pitifully, “I was just sad but now I’m ok, so you can have fun at your party all right?” Mirabel said.
“You wouldn’t ruin the mood,” Camilo added.
“Hola Camilo, and gracias but it’s ok. It’s better if I stay here.” Tears began to well into Antonio’s eyes and Mirabel bent down and gave him a hug.
“Don’t be sad Tonito, if it’s what you want, I’ll come. It’s your birthday, remember?” she asked as she released him from the hug.
“So you will?” He pleaded.
“Si, but not for long.”
“Gracias Mira, I want you to meet my new animal friends!”
Antonio continued to chat with Mirabel, listing off all their names, and what species they were. Camilo was looking at Mirabel though. The sad empty look in her eyes, made his stomach turn. He could never imagine being in her place, as terrible as it sounded. Before they got back to the party Abuela stormed up to the three of them.
“Mirabel? Didn’t your Mami tell you to rest in your bedroom?”
“Si, bu-”
“And instead you take Antonio away from his party?”
“No-”
“Just…!” she sighed. “Go back to your room, I’ll take Tonito back to the party,” Abuela finished. Camilo was about to argue, but Antonio got to it first.
“I left the party, she didn’t take me.”
“Why Tonito? If there was something the matter you should’ve told me or your Mami.”
“I wanted Mira to be at the party with me.” He said as he held her hand tighter.
“Si, Tonito. Mirabel, just don’t mess anything up por favor.”
“Si Abuela,” Mirabel said as Abuela walked away. Camilo was confused and almost angry for Mirabel. What did Abuela mean by “don’t mess anything up”? They got back to the party and Camilo was still thinking when Dolores flicked him on the forehead.
“OW! What was that for?!”
“What are you thinking about? You’re acting weird.” She said,
“You didn’t have to flick me to ask that.”
“I know.” She smirked, “Now what’s the matter with you?”
“Mirabel,” he said.
“What about her?”
“When Antonio brought Mirabel back with him Abuela accused her of taking Antonio away from the party, when she found out what happened she just told Mirabel to not ‘mess anything up,’ it doesn’t sit right with me.
“Abuela just doesn’t like Mirabel,” she said bluntly.
“That’s not fair though. What did she do?”
“Nothing. It’s not Mirabel’s fault, she couldn’t control it. Abuela just doesn’t like her. Probably thinks of Mirabel as a bad omen since she didn’t get a gift I guess. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s the truth.”
“Can’t we do something?” Camilo asked.
“I’ve learned that in these kinds of situations, you shouldn’t get involved. It’s not our business so we shouldn’t interfere.”
After everyone had left and she had helped clean up, she went to go to bed, but before she could go Antonio asked her if he could stay with her until he fell asleep. So that’s what she did. She sat by his bed, next to his jaguar, waited until she heard his little snores, and went to the nursery. She grabbed out a notebook Senora Gabriela gave to her, and wrote down all the negative thoughts she had. She hoped that if she wrote it down, then maybe the thoughts would finally calm down. It only made her spiral more though, as she wrote down every negative thing that went through her head.
‘You’re not special’
‘Nobody likes you’
‘You’re a waste of space’
‘You don’t deserve the family you have’
‘You aren’t good enough’
‘You should just disappear’
She stopped, realizing that it was only getting worse. She shut the notebook and threw it in her closet. Then she went to sleep.
The next day she woke up by herself, she would have to get used to that. She did her daily routine, and breakfast began. She happened to sit next to Luisa, who looked off. Though she doesn’t spend much time with Luisa anymore, she was still her hermana, and she was worried for her. As breakfast ended, Mirabel decided to check on Luisa, and so before Luisa could run off, she stopped her.
“Hey Luisa, could I please talk to you?”
“I don’t know sis, I got a lot of work to do…”
“Por favor, just this once.” Luisa looked at her hermanita's pleading eyes and caved. They went off to the side, near where the donkey pen was.
“So, what did you need to talk to me about?”
“Please be honest with me.”
“Of course, why wouldn’t I?”
“Are you feeling ok?”
“...” Luisa looked to the side anxiously, she didn’t want to lie but she didn’t want to respond.
“Luisa, I know we’re not as close as we used to be, but I still care about you. Just being able to talk about it will make you feel better, trust me.”
“Last night during the ceremony I felt… weak. I’m ok now, but what if it happens again? Then I’ll get behind on my chores and I’ll let everyone down.” Mirabel looked at her sister with sympathy,
“You are more than just your strength. You are beautiful, smart, kind, and ambitious. You always try to help everyone, but sometimes you need to help yourself before you help others.”
“I don’t have time, Abuela will get mad at me if I miss out on my chores…”
“Start off with something small, take a lunch break, and yes I do know that you skip lunch. You may be strong, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have limitations. I think you’re carrying way too much,” Mirabel said. Luisa squeezed her sister tight, thanking her for letting her vent.
“Luisa, I’m sorry to ask but, if it is the magic that’s being affected, where should I look first?”
“Tio Bruno’s tower. I heard that he had a terrible vision before he disappeared. That’s all I got.”
“Gracias Luisa, take care of yourself.”
With that Mirabel was off to Tio Bruno’s tower. First the cracks, and now Luisa losing her gift temporarily? Something was going on, she needed to stop it before anyone got hurt. She snuck around while everyone was getting ready for Isabella’s proposal, and made it to Tio Bruno’s room. It was tall, really tall. By the time she got to the top, she was practically dragging herself. Then she found a gap between the cave and the stairs, so she took a deep breath and swung over it with a vine, just barely making it. She went through the cave until she came upon a room with green shattered glass scattered on the floor. She had found the vision and started putting the pieces in her bag. She sped up as sand started filling the room, she jumped out with all the pieces before the room flooded, and made it out of the tower.
She went to her room and saw Tia Pepa grabbing the rest of Antonio’s things. She said hi and told Mirabel to go help set up dinner for Isabella’s proposal. Mirabel obeyed and decided she would figure out the vision after the proposal. As she headed towards the dinner table, Abuela stopped her in her tracks.
“What did you tell Luisa?!”
“What do you mean?” Mirabel asks.
“I- I was trying to take a break as you said- but I got behind. So I stopped my break and I started picking up the donkeys and… THEY WERE HEAVY!” Luisa cries as she covers her face.
“Luisa-”
“Don’t. Mirabel do not talk to Luisa until I figure out what’s going on. Instead, help set the table for dinner, Luisa clean yourself up and get ready for dinner with the Guzmans.” Abuela says, before she leaves she looks at Mirabel.
“And whatever you’re trying to do- stop.” She finishes as she walks off.
Everyone sits at the table as dinner begins. Mirabel and Dolores do not know what the vision is, Mirabel has not put the pieces together yet, literally. Mirabel was mostly silent through the dinner, as Abuela and Isabella chatted with Senora Guzman and Mariano. Everything was going smoothly until Senora Guzman asked Luisa to pull the piano over so Mariano could play. Luisa sniffles and nods as she trots over to the piano, while Luisa left, Senora Guzman decided to say hi to Mirabel.
“Hola Mirabel, it’s nice to see you again.” Senora Guzman smiles at Mirabel, to which Isabella scrunches her eyebrows.
“You already know Mirabel?” Abuela asks.
“Who doesn’t know Mirabel? She’s always running around the village playing with the kids in the village, at Senora Gabriela’s Bouique, or she’s offering to help someone. Speaking of, thank you so much for mending Mariano’s suit jacket,” Senora Guzman says.
“Ah I see, that’s good,” Abuela says indifferently with a smile.
“Yeah, I never got the chance to thank you, Mirabel. It’s thanks to you that I had a suit jacket to wear today.” Mariano says with a smile.
“No need to thank me, it’s not that big of a deal,” Mirabel says bashfully as Isabella rolls her eyes. Luisa is struggling to pull the piano, she drags it with all her weight, and slowly but surely it’s moving.
“We should get back to talking about the proposal, Luisa what’s taking so long?” Abuela asks.
“I’m-” Luisa pants, “almost done,” Luisa says as she drags the piano towards them while crying, falling multiple times. Mirabel quickly gets up to help her.
“Luisa, it’s ok if you need some help. Let me grab this side and you can grab the other, si?”
“Ok…” she says sadly as she grabs one side. Together they both pick up the piano and put it down beside Mariano. Senora Guzman looks confused.
“Luisa, is everything alright?” she asks.
“Si, everything is fine! No need to worry.” Abuela answers for her as both granddaughters sit down.
“Gracias Luisa and Mirabel,” Mariano says gratefully. Senora Guzman wasn’t too keen on letting that be the end of it, but she was interrupted before she could speak.
“Let’s get on to the proposal por favor,” Abuela says. As she talks, cracks form on the floor of the casita. Tia Pepa sees, causing a small cloud to form above her head as she whispers “clear skies” while messing with her hair.
“Are those cracks? Alma, what’s going on?” Mirabel looks at Abuela in frustration, because she told Abuela this was happening and she didn’t listen to her.
“Mirabel what did you do?!” Abuela yells as everyone else looks in shock.
“What?” Mirabel asks, shock evident on her face.
“How is that fair? Mirabel wouldn’t do that,” Mariano says. Isabella crosses her arms and looks at Mirabel.
“Not on purpose. She always tries too hard and then messes everything up,” Isabella says with venom in her voice. Antonio’s face goes from shocked to offended on Mirabel’s behalf.
“You shouldn’t say that, she’s your hermana,” Mariano says.
“What do you expect? She can’t really do much to help without a gift.”
“What is wrong with you? She’s not even the only one here without a gift. Your Abuela doesn’t have a gift, your papi doesn’t have a gift, my mami doesn’t have a gift, I don’t have a gift.”
“It’s different.”
“No, it’s you that’s a different person from the Isabella I thought I wanted to marry. I withdraw my proposal, this is over.” Mariano says sternly as Isabella’s face drops.
“Wait- Senora Guzman please tell your son to not make any rash decisions. Isabella didn’t mean that” Abuela says as more cracks form on the walls, and the clouds grow darker.
“I agree with my son, and I respect his decision. How could you just accuse your granddaughter like that? Then let her older sister say these terrible things about her? I’m sorry Alma, I don’t know what’s going on with your familia, but I don’t think we can make this commitment.” Senora Guzman says. Meanwhile, Mariano had tried to leave but Mirabel stopped him.
“Por favor, don’t be mad at Isabella.”
“Why? After what she said about you-”
“I don’t want to ruin her proposal. She may not be the best hermana mayor, but she’s still my hermana. I don’t want your relationship to end over a fight about me.” Mirabel says timidly.
“Lo siento Mirabel, really, I am. However, I believe in true loyalty, if she can’t be loyal to her own sister, what chance is there for me?” He asks.
“I understand, still please think about it. Isabella isn’t always like that, she can be kind and compassionate as well. She loves this familia as much as I do.”
“I’ll do it for you. Good luck.” Mariano says as he walks out with his Mami. Through all the chaos Mirabel is able to escape, she runs from the disaster that was the proposal dinner. She runs straight up the stairs near the doors and stops to take a breath. She hears a noise and looks to see it’s a rat climbing into a painting. Mirabel nudges the painting and finds a secret passageway, it’s dark and foggy. She sighs, relieved she found a place to hide, and sits down on the floor. She pulls out the pieces of the vision from her bag and slowly pieces them together. It reveals a picture of Mirabel behind Casita, flipping from being cracked and not cracked. Mirabel looks in shock as her heart falls into her stomach. Is… is she the reason Casita is cracking? Her hands begin to shake as her inner demons flood her head. Her breaths are small and shallow, and tears threaten to fall down her face. A figure is seen behind her and touches her shoulder, making her jump. She sees a man in a green cape pulls his hood off to reveal her Tio Bruno.
“Ah! Sorry- sorry I didn’t mean to- uh-” He stops not knowing what to say. Mirabel was so surprised that she stopped shaking and her breathing slowed.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Eight
Tumblr media
(The beginning of the movie-based plot)
Antonio had woken up and jumped onto Mirabel's bed, telling her that it was his birthday. She grabbed him and pulled him into a hug.
“You know if it wasn’t your birthday I would be mad at you for waking me up.”
“No, you wouldn’t, you love me too much.”
“You’re right you little stinker,” she said as she tickled him.
“Feliz Cumpleanos Tonito.”
“Gracias Mirabel.”
Mirabel knocked on everyone’s door to wake them up as usual. She did her daily chores, laundry, setting the table for breakfast, etc. Then that morning she went outside to play with the village children since she was already up. Tonito wanted to join her but his Mami and Papa were smothering him and wishing him a happy birthday. She sang and ran around the village telling them about her familia. Afterward the village children asked her what her gift was. She should’ve known that they would ask. Most of the time the talk about Mirabel being giftless was told through whispers and rumors. Mirabel didn’t want to lie to them.
“I wasn’t given a gift.” She said solemnly.
“Why not?” A young girl asked.
“I don’t know why, but it’s ok. It just means that I have more time to play with you guys.”
“Is Antonio going to get a gift?”
“Of course he is silly. He’s going to get a super cool gift, so you better watch out.” She said with exaggerated hand movements. The kids giggled and ran off to play.
She headed inside, knocking over a couple of things while trying to maneuver through the crowd in the casita. She saw her Abuela directing people, showing them where to put decorations. Mirabel walked toward her as Abuela turned around.
“Oh! Mirabel,” She said.
“Hola Abuela, I wanted to ask if there was anything I could do to help?” Many of the townspeople didn’t have gifts and they were helping, why not her?
“Gracias Mirabel, but today isn’t the best day. Everything must go perfectly. Let the familia do what they do best.”
“Si Abuela,” she said as she left. She decided to check on Antonio and then probably go back to the nursery. Antonio ran up to Mirabel and showed off the suit that he got. She smiled and told him that he looked very grown up. Then she went back to the nursery, soon it would be just her room. It was weird without Tonito’s bed next to hers. She could barely remember what it was like before she shared a room with Antonio. She was worried that they would grow apart like she and Camilo did when he left. Little did she know that Antonio wouldn’t let that happen in a million years. She stayed on her bed and sketched in her notebook waiting for it to be time to leave. She left the room early though, so she could see the progress. It brought back memories of her ceremony, but she just shook them away. Pretending they weren’t there in the back of her head. About five minutes before the ceremony was going to begin, nobody could find Antonio, but Mirabel knew where he would probably be. She went to the nursery and grabbed his gift that was wrapped.
“You know they’re waiting for you,” she said playfully. She dropped her present to the floor,
“If you don’t grab this present it’s going to self-destruct in five, four, three, two…” A little arm came out and grabbed the present. He opened it to find a stuffed jaguar, which he hugged tightly. She joined him under the bed.
“What’s wrong mi hombrecito?”
“I’m scared, what if I don’t get my gift?” he asked.
“Well first, it’s not going to happen. You’re going to go out there and touch that candle and open the brightest door anyone has ever seen! But if that happened in that impossible scenario, you would be stuck with me and I could keep you all to myself.” She said as she squeezed him.
“Gracias Mirabel.”
“Anytime Tonito.” Casita started flipping the boards, letting them know it was time to go. Mirabel gave him one last hug and took Antonio to his madre y padre.
Antonio looked out at the candle nervously, he couldn’t do this. He was too scared. He saw Mirabel off to the side and held out his hand. She whispered to him saying,
“I can’t” but he whispered back,
“I need you.” She couldn’t say no to him, so she grabbed his hand.
“Come on, let’s get you to your door.” She walked him straight to Abuela and the candle as he held on tightly to her arm. Memories of her ceremony flashed before her, but she refused to let them affect her. This was Tonitos night, she wasn’t going to ruin it, no matter what. Abuela smiled at him.
“Will you serve this community in strength and hope?” He nodded and then he touched the candle. He walked over to his door and put his hand on the doorknob. The door shined as a Tucan squawked at him on his shoulders.
“Uh-huh uh-huh, I understand you” The toucan squawked again.
“Of course, they can come!” Animals went straight to him, and his picture appeared on the door. Mirabel looked in awe, she was so proud of him.
“We have a new gift!” Abuela announced as the crowd cheered. Everyone began to dance and cheer, exploring Antonio’s new room. Abuela called for a family photo, and everyone gathered around and smiled. Everyone except for Mirabel that is. Her smile faltered, she should’ve expected this. She didn’t want to risk ruining the mood, so she walked out into the halls of the casita. She walked around, singing about how she felt. It ended solemnly as she saw a crack in the floor, she picked up the broken floor tile and then dropped it when it scratched her.
“Casita?” Cracks formed around the walls and Mirabel panicked. She ran straight towards her Abuela, and tapped on her shoulder,
“Can I please talk to you?”
“Not now Mirabel, we’re celebrating.”
“It’s important.”
“What’s so important that you have to interrupt your primos party?”
“I saw cracks on the walls of Casita, and I panicked and ran here.” She said quietly to not cause panic, she knew her Abuela liked to keep the public happy. Abuela excused herself and Mirabel took her to where she saw the cracks. The cracks were gone though, even the broken tile on the floor.
“Really Mirabel?”
“I’m not lying, I got cut on my hand by a broken piece of tile, see?” She held up her hand. Abuela just shook her head.
“Just because tonight was hard for you doesn’t mean you get to make things up for attention. That’s enough. Go get an arepa from your Mami and don’t tell anyone.”
“Si abuela,” she said through gritted teeth. She was frustrated, tired, and sad. Despite how she felt, she would never try to ruin Tonito’s night. Her mami gave her a hug and told her that she should get some rest. She dragged herself back to her room the nursery and curled up in a ball against the wall while sitting on her bed. She held her knees to her chest and just cried. There was no Tonito to worry about, he was busy with his party. It was probably too loud for Dolores to hear her, though even if she did Mirabel doubted she would come. She leaned her head against the wall, tears streaming down her face. Her thoughts were out of control.
‘Idiot, why would you ruin Tonito’s night?’
‘You’ll never make your familia proud.’
‘They hate you, at least when they remember you exist.’
‘You’d be better off gone.’
‘Maybe you just weren’t good enough for a gift.’

She walked in and Senora Gabriela excitedly hugged Mirabel.
“Hola Mira, how’s your day been so far?”
“It’s been good, Tonito and I went to the forest after breakfast.”
“Well I’m glad, I made you a special pastry to have with your lunch today.”
“You didn’t have to Senora Gabriela.”
“I know, but I wanted to.” She said as she pinched Mirabel’s cheek.
“Did you make me one too?” Antonio asked excitedly.
“Of course I did Antonio!” Gabriela said as she hugged him as well.
“I’m going to finish the project that I started yesterday,” Mirabel said as she set down her bag.
“No no no. Not today. Today you’re going to rest and have a good time. I won’t let you work on your birthday.” Gabriela said with a cheeky smile. Antonio’s face dropped.
“W-wait, I forgot your birthday?” he asked with sadness written all over his face. Mirabel bent down and gave him a kiss on the forehead.
“Of course not silly hombrecito. You’re too little to remember dates like that. Yes though, today is my birthday.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t even have a present.” He said defeatedly.
“It’s not too late Tonito, if you want I can help you,” Gabriela said while booping his nose.
“Gracias Senora!” He said while jumping.
“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do?” Mirabel asked Gabriela.
“Si, why don’t you just sit on the couch and relax. Maybe you could sketch out some dresses or crochet a bit.” Mirabel nodded and plopped onto the couch, while Antonio and Gabriela went into the back.
“Would you like to see what I got Mirabel?” she asked.
“Si!” He said, and she took him towards her closet where she pulled out a lacey blue dress. It puffed out at the bottom, and it had butterfly designs surrounding the bottom of the dress.
“Did you make this Senora?”
“Si, but don’t tell Mirabel yet. It’s a secret.” She said while putting her finger up to her lips.
“I promise.”
“Ok, why don’t you try thinking of what she likes.”
“She likes butterflies!” he exclaimed.
“What if you drew her some butterflies?”
“Yeah! I could make them blue like her dress.”
“Smart thinking Tonito, you can color over here in the back while I go talk to a client, si?”
“Si Senora.” He said while pulling out one of his notebooks.
The day went by quickly, and Mirabel graciously thanked Gabriela for making her a special pastry on her birthday. Though Gabriela insisted that it was her pleasure. By the time lunch was over Gabriela had wrapped her present, and then helped Tonito wrap his present. The wrapping paper was dark blue, and they both put a white bow on top. Gabriela and Tonito brought their gifts out and Mirabel smiled.
“Open mine first!” Tonito pleaded.
“Of course hombrecito.” She said as she gently tore off the bow and ripped the paper off to reveal a drawing of blue butterflies in a meadow that said Felix Cumpleanos.
“This is beautiful hombrecito, gracias.” She said as she gave him a big hug and littered kisses on his face.
“Miraaa!” He whined as he wriggled out of her grasp. Gabriela and Mirabel both laughed as Gabriela handed Mirabel her present.
“Gracias Gabriela.”
“Shush, don’t thank me yet, you haven’t even opened it.” Mirabel chuckled and tore the bow and paper off to reveal a white box. She opened it and pulled out her beautiful blue dress. It was like a dress only a princess would wear. Tears welled in her eyes as she smiled. She gently folded the dress back into the box before jumping onto Gabriela, crying in her arms.
“Muy gracias Senora. I don’t know how I could ever repay you for your kindness.”
“You never have to pay me back Mira, you are growing to be a beautiful young woman, I see it in you every day. I love you as if you were my own daughter.” She tried it on, and it fit perfectly, the dress puffed out as Mirabel spun in it. She took it off so as to not ruin it, and then they had to head home for dinner.
“Feliz Cumpleanos Mirabel.” Gabriela said as they headed home. Mirabel held the white box tight, it was better than anything she could’ve asked for. When they arrived home Mirabel tried to go straight to the nursery but was stopped by her mami.
“Lo siento Mirabel, it’s been a long day.” She said as she gave her youngest daughter a hug.
“What are you holding?” Antonio answered for Mirabel,
“It’s her present from Senora Gabriela!” He exclaimed.
“Oh that’s so nice of her, what was the special occasion?” she asked. Mirabel put on the best fake smile she could muster as Antonio was shocked. I mean he was little, which is why Mirabel told him it was fine that he forgot, but her Mami? How did she forget?
“Did you for-”
“It’s nothing. She was just being nice.” Mirabel interrupted him.
“Ah, well te amo Mirabel.”
“Te amo Mami,” she responded as her mom walked away.
“Why didn’t you tell her it was your birthday?”
“It’s ok Tonito. On my birthday when I was younger something bad happened and so we don’t really celebrate anymore. She’s busy anyway, I don’t want to bother her.” She didn’t deserve to celebrate her birthday.
“Ok..” he said as they walked to the nursery. She put the white box underneath her bed.
“Aren’t you going to wear the dress?” He asked.
“I don’t know hombrecito. I don’t want to ruin it, and we need to eat dinner.”
“Can you wear it after dinner?”
“Anything for you Tonito.” She said as she kissed the top of his head. They sat down for dinner. Mirabel acted normal, though her smile was merely a facade to how she felt on the inside. The thoughts that plagued her, held her captive. Antonio looked expectantly at everyone, waiting for someone to tell Mira happy birthday. Even if they don’t celebrate, they should still wish her a happy birthday, right? To Mirabel's surprise, fate would have something in mind for her. As everyone finished eating they went to their separate rooms, that is everyone except Dolores who lightly tapped Mirabel's shoulder.
“Si?” Mirabel asked in a quiet voice.
“Um… Feliz Cumpleanos Mirabel. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.”
“Gracias Dolores.” She said as she walked with Tonito to the room. Her insides bubbled with happiness. Even if Dolores didn’t remember until Tonito said it, she still appreciated the sentiment. She put the dress on and Antonio and Mirabel danced together until Antonio began to yawn. Then they got into their pajamas and went to sleep. Mirabel got a good night's sleep that night. Though her thoughts still plagued her, she didn’t let them ruin her happiness. She had the best fifteenth birthday.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Six
Tumblr media
Despite being one of the happiest times of her life, she had a problem, an issue that stemmed from deep down inside her. No matter how hard she tried, she still felt like she wasn’t enough. That she could be doing better, that her sewing skills could be better. Gabriela had told her not to doubt herself but she couldn’t help it. Every mistake she made haunted her. Any time she so much as slightly messed up a dress she had to hold back tears. She knew she was sensitive, she knew that she made it a bigger deal than it was. She couldn’t stop herself though. She filled her days with work. She started doing the laundry for almost everyone in the house. She took care of Antonio throughout the day, she ran him baths, she made sure he had plenty of playdates, she took him out to the forest, she had started taking care of the village children, she started mending all the clothes in the household, and she took on small projects from Senora Gabriela. She refused to leave herself alone with her thoughts because they scared her. At night she was normally able to fall asleep, being exhausted from the entire day. Tonito’s fourth birthday though wasn’t one of those nights. The familia spent much time decorating the casita to celebrate Tonitos birthday. Mirabel had actually been working on a special project for her Tonito. It was a backpack that was made with zebra print fabric. She was very excited to give it to him. The day came and she had gotten up early to see that her Tonito was gone. He was probably being doted on by his madre. Mirabel went about her schedule as usual. They ate breakfast, and Antonio had gotten special birthday pancakes. After breakfast ended she went to wish her primito a happy birthday, but he was dragged away by his madre y padre, they were getting him ready for the party. Of course, she should’ve known. She got her present ready and waited for the party to begin, and it went off without a hitch. Many of the village kids came, to which they happily came over and practically jumped onto Mirabel. She talked with some of the parents, and they talked about how crazy their kids could be after dessert, Mirabel shared a time when her Mami made churros and Antonio ran around for almost an hour straight before passing out. Then she saw Antonio in his little outfit. He was getting so big. After his madre got distracted he booked it for Mirabel, jumping into her arms.
“Feliz Cumpleanos Tonito.” She said while hugging him tight.
“Gracias Mira.” He said bashfully. She set him down and he saw his friends playing around and looked at Mirabel.
“What are you waiting for? Go play Antonio,” Mirabel said. Antonio smiled and gave her a quick hug before running off to go play with his friends. The night went great, Antonio was so happy and his cake was delicious, as a courtesy of Julieta of course. The time for presents came and his madre y padre had gotten him animal print notebooks with plenty of colored pencils and markers. He also got plenty of animal toys and books. When it was finally her turn to give Tonito his present, she was interrupted by Tia Pepa, letting everyone know that she appreciated everyone who came and that she wished everyone a good night. As she finished her speech a crowd of people dragged her away from her Tonito, who was happily looking at all the gifts he had. Defeated, Mirabel sadly went to the nursery and got ready for bed. Tonito was in his pajamas when he walked into the room, seeing his favorite prima frowning at the unopened present in her hands. He ran up to her and gave her a big hug. She laughed as she hugged him back.
“Is that the present you got me?”
“Si hombrecito, I wish I could’ve given it to you earlier.” She said sadly.
“I like it better when it’s just me and you. Can I open it now? Please?” He asked with puppy-dog eyes. She obviously nodded and handed him the gift. He opened it carefully and smiled at the zebra print backpack.
“Feliz cumpleanos Tonito.”
“Gracias Mira! Now I can take all my new presents with me when we go to the forest. I can’t wait to draw more animals.” He said with a huge smile. She just smiled back and told him to go to bed, and so they did. She looked up at the ceiling. Her mind went a million miles a minute, and she knew that she wasn’t going to sleep a wink that night. Dark thoughts swarmed her head, as tears streamed down her face. She wouldn’t dare whimper, she didn’t want her primito to worry.
Before she knew it, it was almost her birthday, her fifteenth birthday, her quinceanera. She has never bothered with reminding the familia about her birthday, and this year was no different. She hoped though, that since it was quinceanera, the least they could do was wish her a happy birthday. She woke up that morning and did everything as normal, she woke everyone up and started the laundry, made sure Tonito got dressed and then she helped set the table for breakfast. She looked expectantly at her mami and papi, but the realization hit that they might’ve forgotten as breakfast came to an end and they left to do their chores. Nobody else batted an eye. Antonio gave her a big hug though and asked if they could go to the forest. She said that they would go for a bit but then they would go to Senora Gabriela’s boutique. So she took Antonio to the forest and laid down a blanket that she had sewn herself. Antonio ran around, drawing some plants in his new notebooks. She sat and watched him, but she zoned out as her thoughts swarmed.
‘They forgot again.’
‘They don’t care about you.’
‘Your birthday isn’t important anyway.’
‘You don’t deserve to celebrate your birthday.’
“MIRABEL!” Antonio yelled as Mirabel was shaken out of her thoughts.
“Lo siento Tonito, what is it?”
“I was going to show you my drawing of a daisy I found, but tell me what’s the matter first.”
“Silly hombrecito, I’m ok, just a little tired is all.”
“... ok, well do you want to see the daisy I drew?”
“Of course!” She said while tickling his side. He showed her a colorful picture of a daisy, he had copied it really well considering he was just four.
“It's fantastic hombrecito, muy bien.”
“Gracias Mira. Can we go to the boutique now?”
“You don’t want to draw anymore?”
“No, I don’t want to use up all my notebooks yet,” he said. Though secretly he did want to stay, he also wanted his Mira to feel better, and she was always happy with Senora Gabriela.
“Ok Tonito, let’s go then,” she said as she took his hand. They walked to the boutique and briefly said hi to Antonio’s friends. He rushed Mirabel past his friends though, and they made it to the boutique. She walked in and Senora Gabriela excitedly hugged Mirabel.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Five
Tumblr media
Why would Tonito call his prima his mama? She was his mama. Pepa looked at Mirabel, and Mirabel looked shell-shocked. Pepa tried to organize her thoughts, maybe it was just a miscommunication. Her Tonito was just confused. She pulled Tonito back into her arms, facing him towards her.
“Silly hombrecito, I’m your mama.” She said as she gently put his hand against her. He began to fuss and pulled towards her niece once again. She looked over at Mirabel to see her still not moving, she looked scared or surprised. Mirabel didn’t move, she couldn’t. She didn’t know what to do, or what to say. She had tried so hard to show Antonio that Pepa was his mama. She failed. Her head spiraled, her thoughts swarming her.
‘How could you let this happen?’
‘You’re as useless as everyone thinks you are.’
‘You had ONE job.’
‘It’s your fault.’
‘Your familia will NEVER be proud of you.’
‘You’re better off dead…’
That last one made tears well in her eyes, though she refused to let them fall. She held her breath, as she waited for her Tia Pepa’s reaction. Would she yell at her? Would she stop letting her take care of Tonito? Would she isolate her from the familia? Would she be disappointed in her? Pepa didn’t know what to say. What could she say? Guilt swelled in her chest, jealousy, sadness, anger. She took a deep breath repeating the words ‘clear skies’ in her head.
“N- Nevermind Mirabel. I’ll just do it.” She said as she walked away. Mirabel just sat there, confusion and fear written on her face. She deserved to get yelled at. She deserved to get in trouble. She was a failure. Yet Tia Pepa didn’t yell like she normally would, she just left. For all Mirabel knows, Tia Pepa probably hates her now. She got off the couch feeling numb. She ignored the stares from her mami and Abuela. She walked into the nursery and laid down on her bed. Tia Pepa came in there soon after and put Tonito in his crib after changing him into his pajamas. Mirabel tried with all her might to pretend she was asleep. Her Tia seemed to buy it luckily as she looked at her resting son.
“Mi hombrecito, lo siento. I shouldn’t be angry at you. You’re just a baby. Mirabel is just a kid. I am, though, I’m angry at both of you, but at the same time, I can’t be. Especially never at you, my little bundle of joy. Te amo, buenas noches Tonito.” She whispered. Then she went to her bed, with her husband. She told Felix what happened, and she cried into his arms. He held her tight. He didn’t mind the rain that fell in their room. He was just glad she was able to feel something in her room. Their room technically. Eventually, Pepa got tired and she finally stopped crying as the clouds slowly dissipated.
“Mi vida, don’t fret my dear. It’s not too late, it’s never too late. Show Tonito who his real mami is, si?”
“Si Felix, gracias.”
“Anytime mi amor.”
Mirabel just laid in her bed and stared at the ceiling, listening to the soothing sound of her primito's little snores. She didn’t know how to feel, she was scared and sad, but also, just a little happy. She wished a small part of her didn’t want to be Tonito’s mami. Sometimes, she acted like his Mami too. She knew she didn’t deserve it though. This was the least she could do for being so useless. She needed to contribute to the familia in some way, and this is how.
Pepa made sure to spend extra time with her youngest son for the next couple of weeks. She even took it upon herself to take a break from chores for a day to dedicate to Antonio, to Abuela's displeasure. Over the next couple of months Antonio made so much progress. He was almost two and he could already say so many words including, mama, dada, nana, Mira, and so much more. Time went by quickly for Mirabel. Before she knew it, Tonito had turned three. She was already thirteen. Tonito had started eating at the table during breakfast and dinner, and he had learned pretty quickly how to use utensils, especially at his age. Mirabel loves being able to tell Tonito that she loves him, and then him being able to tell her back. She had gotten more books about animals from the library since he seemed so infatuated with them. She had slowly taught him to read and write a bit. Pepa was about the same, though she did make sure to have a little extra time for all her children, especially Antonio. Mirabel’s skills increased regarding sewing and embroidery. She had made multiple dresses, shirts, skirts, and much more. Senora Gabriela praised her constantly. Mirabel had started taking Antonio out more to play with his friends. Though at first, it was a bit awkward to talk to a bunch of adults, they still treated her with respect for being such a good Prima to her little cousin. She had gotten to know many of the village children, and she joined Antonio and his friends often, helping to watch the children whenever she could.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Four
Tumblr media
The following day Mirabel was back to taking care of Antonio by herself, which she preferred. She was surprised at how lonely it was without her primito. Mirabel had made sure that Antonio knew he wasn’t allowed to touch any supplies at the boutique, and she brought other toys for him instead. While Mirabel was mending clothes, sometimes Tonito would just sit beside her and watch her. One day while Mirabel was taking a break and eating lunch with Senora Gabriela, Tonito had clung to the chair and pulled himself up all the way. He was standing! Though not on his own, he supported his weight against the chair, but Mirabel was still so proud of him. She picked him up and littered kisses all over him, praising him for doing a good job. Gabriela was excited too. It was magical seeing a baby stand up for the first time. They grew so fast in the first couple of years of life. When Mirabel got home she made sure to set Tonito down in the living room and played with him. She wanted her Tia Pepa to see Tonito stand up “for the first time.” When Tia Pepa arrived home Mirabel was reading Tonito, one of his animal books. When Mirabel saw Pepa she quickly had Antonio crawl to his Mami. When Pepa saw him crawl towards her she smiled and loved on her little boy. Then she decided she would dedicate some time to playing with Antonio. While Pepa sat down on the couch she watched as Antonio grabbed onto the leg of the couch and pulled himself up so he was standing. She smiled excitedly and called Felix and her kids to show them what she had seen. They all gawked over how cute he was. Felix held his hand and helped him toddle around the living room. Mirabel smiled at the sight and then went to her room to crochet, which is one of the few things she was allowed to do in the nursery her room with Antonio living there.
As time went on Antonio started trying to form actual words. Mirabel was secretly hoping that his first word would be Mira, but at the same time hoped it wouldn’t be so her Tia Pepa didn’t get angry with her. Though fortunately and unfortunately, his first word was not Mira. It was a day when Senora Gabriela had to close the shop because her husband was sick. Her mami’s cooking could only do so much. It minimized the symptoms but he was still contagious. Nonetheless, Mirabel took advantage of the break. She was able to catch up on mending some of la famila’s clothing. Isabella had a ripped dress from thorns on a rose bush, one of the donkeys ripped off a part of Luisa’s skirt, her papi had ripped his shirt on some lumber that he had chopped, and much more. While she was mending, Tonito was playing with one of his stuffies while babbling. While he was playing though, he was pulling on the stuffy’s arm a bit too hard and the stitches broke. The arm ripped off. When little Antonio saw this he burst out into tears. Mirabel put what she was working on down and cooed Antonio. She pulled him into an embrace and quietly assured him that everything would be ok while littering kisses on his head. Antonio's sobs eventually turned to whimpers. Mirabel gently set him down and grabbed the stuffy. He watched intently as she put the stuffing back into the arm, and started stitching the arm back to the body. Mirabel worked silently, focusing on stitching the arm back on properly. Eventually, she did finish, made a knot at the end and cut off the extra thread, and gave it back to Antonio.
“See hombrecito? Good as new!” She said while Antonio took a second to process what happened. He smiled and started hugging the stuffy.
“You’re just like your mama, it’s the little things.” She laughed. Antonio giggled with her and babbled.
“Mama!” He exclaimed. Mirabel's face went from content to excited to terrified in an instant.
“No no no no no! I’m not your mama,” she said while grabbing a picture on the mantle. She pointed to Tia Pepa, “This is your mama.”
“Mamama” he giggled.
“Yes, this is your mama.” She points to herself, “I’m Mira.” He scrunched his face up and thought about it.
“Mama.” He said with a proud look on his face.
“Mira. Mi-ra. I’m Mira.”
“Mama,” he pouted.
“Follow me Tonito, ‘Mi’.”
“Mi” he repeated.
“Ra”
“Ra”
“Mira.”
“Mama!” He giggled. At this point, Mirabel was panicking. What would she do? What could she do? Sometimes Mirabel felt like she was closer to Tonito than his own mother, but she’s not nearly important enough to have the title “mama.” She calculated a plan in her head, maybe it was just Tonito repeating random sounds. She could figure this out. She can give Tonito to her Tia and leave quickly, and then eventually Antonio will just babble and say mama to her. He says his “first” word, Tia Pepa is happy, and nobody gets hurt. That was the plan.
“Ay Tonito what am I going to do with you?” she asked the young boy. He just blinked at her and giggled. She had no choice but to spoil him with love and affection. As the day came to an end, and the adults were arriving home, Mirabel made sure to continue to show Tonito pictures of his mama, trying to get him to associate his mama with Tia Pepa. She could only pray that it worked. When Tia Pepa got home, Antonio was dressed in a red shirt and orange overalls. She immediately saw her baby boy, who was practically toddling by now and gave him a big squeeze. Mirabel smiled at the cute interaction, she could tell that Tia Pepa was happy when the sky began to clear. Mirabel quickly sneaked away so nobody saw her. This was her chance. She listened closely, trying to hear what Tia Pepa was saying. She couldn’t make it out because she was busy helping her mami set the table, but she was hoping that Tonito would hurry up and call Tia Pepa mama. Dinner was ready and little Antonio still hadn’t said, mama. Mirabel internally panicked but tried to hide it. She just ate and watched Tia closely. Tia Pepa would’ve announced to everyone that her hombrecito called her mama for the first time if it happened. It didn’t though. So instead Mirabel sat quietly throughout dinner. Afterward, Tia Pepa fed Tonito his bottle in the living room. Mirabel just sat there awkwardly, watching her feed him until he finished and did the cutest little burp. Mirabel had to hold herself back from cooing at him. She could never figure out how he managed to be so cute. Tia Pepa got up and stood in front of Mirabel.
“You don’t mind putting Tonito to bed for me, do you? I really need to rest after today.” Her Tia Pepa asked. Mirabel wanted so badly to ask Tia Pepa to do it herself, so that way she didn’t have to hide the fact that Tonito said his first word until tomorrow, but instead she sighed.
“Of course, Tia.”
“Gracias Mirabel.” She said with a grateful smile on her face. She went to put her hombrecito in Mirabel’s lap when Mirabel’s worst nightmare happened.
“Mama!” Tonito said while putting his arms out towards Mirabel. Immediately clouds formed above Pepa’s head as it sank in. She looked at her niece, in anger and sadness. Why would Tonito call his prima his mama?

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Three
Tumblr media
Mirabel felt like she had a purpose, she didn’t feel as alone anymore, even if Antonio was too young to talk back. He did babble back sometimes though, which Mirabel thought was adorable and hilarious. Especially when she would rant to him about something she was upset about and then he would just be like “BA!” as if he was agreeing with her. It always made her laugh. After a little while she would take Tonito outside more, she visited the town some, but Tonito would get antsy being stuck in Mirabel’s arms. She would visit Gabriela, telling her that she was excited to start helping again when Tonito was big enough to stay at the boutique with her. Gabriela was overjoyed as well, she thought little Antonio was just the cutest thing, and it would be nice to be able to see such a wholesome sight while working. Antonio’s favorite place to be was outside though. Mirabel would take him to the forest and he would crawl around in the grass, playing with whatever he could grab. While they were out Mirabel would tell him about the different types of bugs and plants. Though funnily enough Antonio spent the most time playing with rocks he found. Time flew by and Antonio was almost a year old. He babbled a lot, though he never actually said words. His favorite thing to say was “Babababa.” Around that time Mirabel had started taking Tonito to the boutique. Whenever people came to the shop they would play with Antonio, making silly faces at him or just baby-talking to him. It made it easier for Mirabel to be able to help Gabriela, Gabriela would also help Mirabel take care of him. Mirabel had begun trying to teach him to walk, though she couldn’t help but laugh when he tried to do it on his own. He would cling on to the leg of a chair and pull himself up some, but then fall down on his butt and laugh at himself. He was a joy to be around. His first birthday came around and she had, with the help of Senora Gabriela, made a little shirt for him. She embroidered a little tiger on a shirt since that’s the animal he would always giggle at whenever she read animal books to him. When the day came around though, as she woke up she found that Tonito wasn’t there. She was expecting this, Pepa was probably doting on him on his special day. She went about her schedule, waking everyone up and setting up the table. Pepa was on the couch with Antonio trying to get him to say “Mami.”
“Oh my little hombrecito, happy birthday.” She said as she tickled him. He would giggle and say his favorite “word.”
“Babababa”
“No Tonito, Mama”
“.. Baba”
“Ma-ma” He just giggled,
“Baba!” She sighed in defeat but she couldn’t help but smile at him. The family ate breakfast together, everyone saying happy birthday to Antonio. Afterward, Pepa and Felix spent time playing with Antonio, Pepa read him a book, while Felix would throw Antonio in the air, which nearly caused Pepa to create a tornado. Mirabel was nervous because Tonito still hadn’t had breakfast yet, so his schedule was off. She told herself that she didn’t need to worry about it. She wouldn’t be the one doting on Tonito today, it would be his real madre y padre. Tonito got dressed up in a fancy little tuxedo that he immediately began tugging at. Mirabel smiled remembering how Tonito doesn’t like wearing multiple layers, she could barely get him to put a jacket on during winter. Pepa had been patient the first ten times, but her patience dwindled quickly as a cloud slowly formed above her. Felix went ahead and took Antonio, and they had cake, Tonito had cake all over his face, and his fancy tuxedo. Some of the buttons were ripped off, and she had no idea where the bowtie went. That night Antonio was put in his crib with no clothes on, he still had frosting in his hair. Mirabel giggled and took him out of the crib and ran him a bath. She washed out all of the frosting in his hair and made sure the bath was just warm enough so Tonito didn’t get cold. She dried him off and gave him a clean diaper with some pants and the shirt she made him. Though she didn’t plan on it being used as pajamas, she’s glad he got to wear her gift on his birthday. Mirabel tucked Tonito in, giving him a kiss on his forehead.
“Goodnight my little Tonito. Happy birthday.”
The following day Mirabel was back to taking care of Antonio by herself, which she preferred. She was surprised at how lonely it was without her primito.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part Two
Tumblr media
By the time her seventh birthday rolled around, all she wanted was more sewing supplies. She asked her Mami and Papi if she could have more fabric and thread for her birthday. For her sixth birthday, there wasn’t really a celebration, her birthday wasn’t a good memory for her any longer. Her mami and papi did get her a small stuffed animal, and they had churros that night. Other than that, there wasn’t really anything special. Mirabel didn’t mind though, she didn’t like her birthday anymore, the only thing she wanted was to get more supplies, she didn’t want a party, decorations, or cake. When the day finally came she excitedly got ready for the day, making sure to wear her favorite dress, a blue summer dress that she had embroidered white butterflies on. She was quite proud of herself for how it turned out. She took extra care to put her hair up into half-up half-down pigtails. The moment she stepped out of her room her Abuela was there to meet her. Mirabel wasn’t expecting to see Abuela on her birthday, though she was happy that she was there. Though the happiness faded as she realized she was getting lectured for taking too long to get ready. Mirabel apologized quietly and walked over to eat breakfast. They talked about their chores and then they left. Mirabel was left alone again. It normally didn’t bother her, but she still had a small hope that one of them would wish her a happy birthday. She went over to Senora Gabriela’s Boutique to help her, though she was more quiet than usual, and Gabriela noticed pretty quickly, though she didn’t push the subject. By the end of the day though, she had asked Mirabel what was wrong, to which Mirabel looked down at the floor embarrassed saying that today was her birthday, but her familia forgot. Gabriela’s heart broke as she quickly pulled the child into a hug. She told her that she has grown to be a very talented girl and that she wishes her a happy birthday from the bottom of her heart. Before Mirabel left the boutique Gabriela insisted she take a pastry, which Mirabel gratefully accepted. When she got home she ate dinner silently and went to her room without talking to anyone.
From age seven to nine it was mostly uneventful, though she’d gotten way better at embroidery during that time. She had also set up a kind of schedule for herself. She wakes up and knocks on everyone’s doors to make sure they get up on time, taking extra care to do it gently on Dolores’ door. Then she would set the table for breakfast, eat, go to the boutique, eat lunch, go to the boutique again, go home for dinner, and then go to sleep. She liked the way things were, and though she was lonely, she stopped being silent. It started with talking to herself, but slowly evolved into her talking with casita. Casita was like a friend to her, they both took care of each other. By the time she had turned ten her world was turned upside down. A crib was moved to the opposite side of her room, and she was informed she would have to share the nursery. She had to take all her supplies out of the room because it was too dangerous for the baby, and she had to keep the room extra clean. She was dreading the day her new primo would be born. Then that day came, and she met her primito, Antonio. He was so small, as small as a doll. He looked so peaceful when he was sleeping in Tia’s arms. For the next two weeks, Tia practically lived in the nursery doting on her baby boy. Mirabel didn’t really get to hold him or anything. Though sometimes she would wave at the baby and he would smile. After the first two weeks, Pepa was dying to get out of the small room. Then Mirabel realized that she would be stuck with her baby primo. It was never directly said that she was in charge of him, but when nobody else stepped up to the plate, she took charge. Pepa had already forced Antonio to wean off breast milk, she would get clouds every time Tonito would bite her, and she was miserable from her breasts being so sore. When Pepa had left to go back to doing her daily chores, Mirabel copied the way she saw her Tia make Tonitos bottles, she would prepare one bottle for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, storing them in the fridge. Her morning started the same as it used to, she would knock on everyone’s doors to wake them up, and then she would set the table. Afterward, though, she would make Antonio’s bottles for the day. After she ate breakfast she promptly woke up Antonio and fed him, then she would change his diaper, get him dressed, and play with him. That was her favorite part. She had fond memories of her early childhood and was determined for Antonio to have the same. She read books to him, gave him toys, took him around the house, and showed him everything. She hadn’t gone to Senora Gabriela since Antonio was born, which she apologized for. Senora insisted that she take some time to spend with her new primo and that when she’s ready she can come back. At night when Pepa came home she would feed Tonito dinner after she ate and set him down in bed. He would wake up multiple times throughout the night, though Mirabel could normally coax him to quiet down quickly and put him back to sleep before he woke anyone up. Though she wasn’t sure that she had kept him quiet enough when she saw bags under Dolores’ eyes. During the first weeks she spent with Tonito he was either sleeping, eating, or dirtying his diaper. Though there were moments when she would just hold Antonio and soothe him when he was fussy. She actually liked doing that though. It was nice to see him so calm and content, and she was comfortable when rocking him on the rocking chair. As he grew though, which he grew quickly, it wasn’t so easy. Once he’d learned to crawl, which Mirabel had made sure that Pepa thought that she saw the “first” time he crawled, he’d go everywhere. He was never content just sitting down, he wanted to get out of the nursery, so that’s what Mirabel did. She took him throughout the house, monitoring him. Giving him toys to play with, he was normally tuckered out by lunch, which gave Mirabel a break while he took a nap. When he would wake up it would be around dinner time and Pepa would feed him. Though whenever he got fussy the nursery ended up rather wet. Life was good.

Mirabel AU / Mirabel Angst / Mama Mirabel / Part One
Tumblr media
Mirabel’s birth was a miracle. She was a very easy child, especially compared to her fussy counterpart Camilo. She slept through the night, having minimal tantrums that could be fixed by just playing with her. She giggled all the time, she was such a curious child. She grabbed anything she could reach, including her mother’s arepas. Ironically as they grew up Camilo became more prone to stealing arepas than Mirabel. As she grew up, Camilo and her were best friends. Pepa and Julieta would take them to the garden, or just explore the town together. They slept together, ate together, and played together. Though that didn’t stop her hermana mayores from stealing her and playing with her. Isabella in particular loved to make Mirabel flower crowns. She would get so excited to tell Mirabel about every new plant she learned about. Mirabel always listened attentively. Luisa would wrestle with Mirabel, and throw her in the air to her mother’s dismay. Dolores was more hesitant with Mirabel, though she did enjoy her company. After she explained to Mirabel that her ears were sensitive and would hurt from loud noises, Mirabel would take extra care to not be too loud when Dolores was around. It was something Dolores appreciated. Even her Tio Bruno was fond of Mirabel. He found her curiosity charming, she would play in the sand with him and learn about his gift. She would babble about how Tio was a wizard or a magician. Tia Pepa would revel in Mirabel's sweet nature, always trying to make Pepa happy whenever she had clouds or rain. Felix would praise her, telling her that together they could keep Pepa from tearing the house apart. Though Pepa didn’t take that comment well. Her mami would let Mirabel help in the kitchen, though she was clumsy like her papi and always made a mess. Mirabel would always giggle whenever her papi was clumsy, she thought it was funny. He was offended at first but he decided it wasn’t so bad since it made her smile. Abuela had grown quite fond of both the young children, but she particularly grew a bond with Mirabel. From when she could barely speak Abuela would tell her stories of her mami, tia, and tio when they were younger. Abuela told her that when she got her gift she would use it to help the community. She loved how Mirabel’s eyes shined when she promised she would make her family proud. Her excitement was unrivaled when her fifth birthday came. She bounced around all day in anticipation. When it finally came to her turn, she touched the candle and everything went dark. Her door disappeared, and she looked to her Abuela for reassurance, reassurance that Abuela didn’t have. She would ask what she did wrong and tell Abuela she was sorry. Abuela didn’t have a response for her though, as she attempted to calm everyone who had begun to panic. Her mami ran to her and pulled her into a tight hug. At that point, it finally sank in. Tears welled in her eyes as they squeezed shut. She didn’t have a gift.
After her ceremony not much had changed at first other than Mirabel herself, she was still a cheerful and optimistic child but she had lost that shine that only a child could have. After a while, she realized that her Tio Bruno was gone and that nobody would even talk about him anymore. Her days playing with Camilo ended as he got stuck doing his chores throughout the day, though she still tried anyway. Eventually, though, he distanced himself, focusing all his energy on his chores, and their tight bond faded away. It wasn’t nearly as bad as what happened with Isabella. She got caught up in her chores as well, though rather than distancing herself from Mirabel, she pushed her away. She was already exhausted from her daily chores, why did Mirabel keep bothering her? Can’t she see that she doesn’t have time for her? After one last push, in which Isabella told her she was annoying and to stop bothering her, resentment grew in Mirabel. It was a mix of sadness and jealousy. Her Tia and Tio were too busy with each other to play with her. Her mami was always exhausted, she could see the bags underneath her eyes, so she wouldn’t even bother asking her. Her papi played with her some at first, but the days between grew, and eventually, he spent less and less time with her too. Luisa was barely home, so she didn’t bother asking her either. She would leave as early as possible and arrive after dark most days. Dolores had too much to worry about to notice her primita and her struggles. They never really played that much, but the few times they spent together practically vanished. Abuela had acted like everything was normal, but it wasn’t. She stopped telling Mirabel stories or playing with her. By the time Mirabel was six, she felt so isolated and alone. She hadn’t given up yet though. Things wouldn’t stay like that forever. All she had to do was contribute something, gift or no gift. She could still be a Madrigal. That’s what she told herself anyway.
She spent all her time learning whatever she could get her hands on. In particular, she liked learning how to embroider. She would make hats and scarves, whatever she could think of. She would embroider butterflies on her dress, and make gifts for her familia. She made her Abuela a bright blue scarf with fabric that she got from Senora Gabriela at her Boutique that she visits frequently. Senora had shown her how to hold the needle properly, and how to clean up a boo-boo when she got hurt. She showed Senora the scarf she made, and Senora Gabriela praised her, insisting her Abuela would love it. So Mirabel went home eagerly to see her Abuela. She felt impatient having to wait until after dinner but finally, they were done eating and she got time to talk to Abuela. She tugged on her shirt, to which Abuela turned around.
“Mirabel?”
“Abuela! Guess what?”
“Listen, I have a lot to do tonight, whatever it is, make it quick please.”
“Yes, Abuela.” She said as she quickly opened her backpack and pulled out a small blue scarf, it had a couple of holes, but for the most part, it stayed together. Mirabel excitedly gave it to her grandmother.
“I made this for you! All by myself!”
“Oh Mirabel, it’s nice but, don’t you think that Senora Gabriela could’ve used this fabric for something more… important?”
“But she gave it to me..” Mirabel said, dejected.
“Thank you, but next time don’t waste fabric like this, si?”
“Si Abuela..” Abuela took the scarf and folded it in her arms, then put it inside her closet, which stayed unused for a long time. The rest of the year Mirabel spent most of her time either at home or at the boutique. She would help Senora Gabriela throughout the day and in return she let Mirabel use whatever materials she needed. She learned how to mend clothes, and would help Senora Gabriela mend clothes for the other townspeople. Mirabel felt important, so she put all her effort into it.
