Summary: You are the daughter of Daemon and Rhaenyra. When the invitation to Aegon and Helaena's wedding came, your entire family rushes from Dragonstone to King's Landing to take part in the festivities. You haven't seen your family in King's Landing for 6 years so you are very excited...

This is my first fic so please be nice :) I thought I'd just try a little self-considered story. I hope you like it. The events are not entirely similar from the series

You have waited a long time for this day. And now it was finally here. Your legs are wriggling and you are nervously fiddling with your dress as you look out of the carriage window and see the towers of the Red Keep approaching. Far too long you have been away. Six years have passed since the terrible events of Driftmark. After your parents took you and your siblings and brought you back to Dragonstone. "Y/N is everything all right? You're about to have the threads of the dress in your hands one by one if you keep this up."

Your father, Daemon Targaryen. Many fear him. Rightly so, you think. Countless times you hung on his every word as he told you how he went into battle and defeated his enemies. Or when he simply read you tales of dragons. You love him dearly, if you can put it that way, you are father's girl. And he treats you with the same warmth. He loves you with all his heart and to only a few people can Daemon Targaryen show affection or even love, but you are one of them. He would do and give anything to keep you safe. It would break his heart if he failed to protect you from the dangers of the world or simply if you did not feel loved.

It started with your birth. Your mother Rheanyra Targaryen was married to Laenor Velaryon. They already had a son together, your brother, Jacaerys Verlaryon. You love your brother very dearly. He's the kind of brother you always have fun with and who's there for you. As children, you played an incredible number of pranks and sometimes they went so far that the servants complained to your parents. When it got to the point where it seemed that Jace and you were not in control, they felt compelled to go to Daemon. They were sorry, because no one wanted to arouse the "wrath" of a dragon, but they had no other choice. If you were unlucky, Daemon would end up standing in front of you and giving you a telling off. But, what the servants didn't know, he could never keep it up for long when you looked at him with sad eyes and muttered "sorry daddy". You call him Daddy or Dad because you couldn't call him Daemon when you were a child. As a child, you wanted to call him Daemon, like all adults did. But all that came out of your mouth was "Dad". If you felt very close to him at certain moments or if you wished for something, it also became "Daddy". And to this day, you just call him Daddy. So the roles soon became clear, as soon as you were in trouble with Daemon, Jace would sent you ahead and let you call him daddy.

But when you were born, the shock was great. Your mother lay in labour on Dragonstone for over two days, even though a new life was to begin, it was a fight for life and death for Rhaenyra. Jace was already born on Dragonstone, as it was important for Rhaenyra to give birth to her children, heirs to the blood of Targaryen and the Iron Throne, on Dragonstone. Laenor was continuously by Rhaenyra's side and held her hand. Daemon was always close by to be there for your mother from a safe distance. Visibly nervous, he watched the birth. But when the maesters finally took you out and you took your first breaths in this world, your father got a fright that was quickly replaced by the feeling of joy and infinite love. As the maesters held you, your silver hair came out, your fair, porcelain skin seemed to reflect the incoming sun. Daemon knew at once, you were his daughter. When Rhaenyra finally held you in her arms, overjoyed, she simply smiled. She hugged you close to her and looked over at Daemon, who nodded lovingly at her. She looked down at you, stroking, your soft cheek as your eyes opened and Rhaenyra saw the most beautiful purple eyes she had ever seen. Laenor smiled and embraced Rhaenyra and you.

"She is the most beautiful girl in all the kingdom," gently he caressed your cheek, "What name shall she have?"

"Y/N Velaryon" says Rhaenyra with a loving smile on her lips. The understanding between Rhaenyra and Laenor was clear, everyone was allowed to have their lovers as long as the marital duties were fulfilled. Laenor was slow in fulfilling his marital duties, and so it came about from time to time that when Rhaenyra and Daemon met, they could not hold back their feelings for long.

The result of these actions was now you and that changed everything for Daemon. When he could finally hold you in his arms, it was over for him. He held you and you looked at him silently, this moment was so precious for him and he simply enjoyed this silence. When he tried to touch you, you reflexively grabbed his finger. His breath caught in his throat and he only had eyes for your small hand clutching his finger. He knew that he would not give you away.

That very evening Daemon went to Rhaenyra.

"I will take her to Viserys. I will tell him that she is my daughter and that he should confirm her legitimacy. She is no Velaryon, she is pure fire of the Targaryens."

Rhaenyra just stared at him at him. "You can't do that! Everyone would know I committed adultery! You can't, she must officially remain the daughter of Laenor."

Daemon began to smirk. "With all due love, but when you look at little Jace, do you really think anyone would think you hadn't committed adultery?"

"Daemon!", she looks at him in horror, "You can't go to my father and ask him to acknowledge my adultery and make her your daughter. No one in the entire realm has that right. Therefore, neither do you. Bastards of high Lords from all over the land would come and ask Viserys to recognize the legitimacy of these children."

"Rhaenyra, regardless of the love I have for you. But don't you ever dare call my daughter a bastard again. Viserys has the ability to recognize her and he will. I don't care about the rest of the realm. She is my daughter and she will be recognized as such."

"And what do you want to say to Laenor? Rub my adultery in his face publicly in front of the entire realm?"

"Oh come on! He lives just as happy a life, stuffed like a goose by his lover. Nothing is rubbed in his face, I have great respect for him, but I want the recognition that Y/N is my daughter. And besides, what are you trying to rub in my face by forbidding me to stand by my daughter in public?"

"He's right Rhaenyra." Suddenly Laenor stood in the room.

"Laenor...", she gasps as she turns towards the door.

"No he is right Rhaenyra. And you know that. She is his daughter. She has the Targaryen fire in her, the purple eyes, her soft white skin. He should have the chance to stand by his daughter publicly." Laenor simply nodded silently at Daemon.

So it came about that Daemon took you, his little dragon and Rhaenyra with him and they set off for King's Landing.

"We really need to sort this matter out urgently because…", King Viserys paused as he heard noises from outside. "There's a small council meeting going on right now, you can't just go in there. Prince Daemon…!" The guard tried to stop Daemon and grabbed him by the arm. With this movement, Daemon felt that the guard was getting too close to you. "If you don't get your arm out of my daughter's reach right now, I'll make sure you lose it altogether." And with that, the door opened and Viserys looked irritatedly at the entrance. Standing in the doorway was his brother, Daemon, with an infant in his arms. Right behind him stood his daughter, Rhaenyra. "Daemon, Rhaenyra? It's really good to see you, but as you can see, you're bursting right into a meeting of the small council."

"Viserys, brother, I have a very urgent matter to discuss with you." Viserys looked at him questioningly and hesitated briefly, "Daemon… please, go to the small hall, I will try to be with you as soon as possible." "Father… please, it is really urgent and we would be very much obliged if you could talk to us immediately"

And with these sentences Rhaenyra spoke for the first time for this recognition.

Rhaenyra was afraid. She wanted you to be recognised as Daemon's daughter, but at the same time she was worried about Jace. If you were legitimised, voices might be raised that if she had been unfaithful to Laenor before, she might have been so with her first child. And gods know what that was about. "Perhaps we can also postpone the last matter for today until tomorrow? It seems my brother and daughter have a big problem to discuss." Viserys spoke to his council, but could not take his eyes off the little bundle on Daemon's arm. The members of the small council nodded and then left the room.

Viserys looked helplessly into the faces of Daemon and Rhaenyra. "Can someone perhaps explain to me what is going on here?" Rhaenyra then took you from Daemon's arm and walked towards Viserys. She smiled warmly at him. "Father, this is your grandchild, Y/N. I gave birth to her, just about a week ago." Viserys was visibly moved. You were so small and delicate and had him wrapped around your finger immediately.

"Oh how delightful, this sweet little child. Hello my sweet darling." As Daemon stepped towards him, Viserys looked up. "As you can see, she is the pure flame of Targaryen blood. Her purple eyes, her porcelain-like skin, her shimmering silver hair." Viserys nodded silently, visibly pleased, he lowered his gaze to you again. "Brother, I want you to recognize her legitimacy." Viserys looked at him irritatingly, "Why should I recognize her legitimacy when she is obviously a Targaryen as well as my daughter's daughter?" "I am her father," Daemon said dryly. It seemed Viserys didn't quite understand at first. Or he didn't want to understand. A simple "How…?" left his lips. "Do you really want me to explain to you now how children are made, brother? Judging by Rhaenyra's three younger siblings, I'd say you're well aware of how it works." "Daemon!" Rhaenyra hissed.

"Oh thank you brother, but I can just about manage that. My question would rather be how it is that my daughter, who is married to Laenor Velaryon, manages to father a child with you"

"Father..," Rhaenyra said, but Daemon interrupted her.

"No, Rhaenyra, I want that legitimacy, I will talk," Daemon raised his hand slightly in her direction and then turned back to Viserys, "Viserys, brother, you know as well as I do that Laenor is neglecting his marital duties. I love Rhaenyra. Just as I loved her before she married Laenor, I still love her…" At these words Rhaenyra's heart warmed and she smiled. "…From that love, Y/N has now come forth. I love her, she is my daughter and I will not rest until she is officially recognized as that" "What..? ", Viserys looked irritatedly back and forth between Daemon and Rhaenyra, "Daemon, how do you imagine this? I just say she's your daughter and that's it? That's not possible."

"It is possible! You are the King! I ask you brother, and you know I don't ask often, but please, enable me to be a good father. Public, not behind any walls."

"I'm not quite sure… What does Laenor say about all this? Rhaenyra?" Rhaenyra stepped forward, now standing next to Daemon. She seemed hesitant, but was convinced she was doing the right thing, "It's definitely a complicated situation, father. But Laenor agrees. So am I. It's not easy and I'm afraid that in the process… Jace's lineage might be called into question, after all it would become official that I was unfaithful to Laenor at least once."

Daemon took Rhaenyra's hand in his and stroked it gently.

"But we agree, Daemon shouldn't be deprived of the opportunity to be a loving father. After all, we know he doesn't care for many people.”

Daemon smirked and looked at Viserys.

Viserys was torn, but finally said, "Okay. Daemon, I will. She will officially be your daughter. But I want you to always stand up for her, stand by her side and be a loving father."

"I stand here for nothing less. Thank you brother."

Viserys nodded and turned to Rhaenyra. "Have no fear. You are my daughter. The heir to the throne. Jace is my grandson and no one will question his lineage. I promise you that."

"Thank you Father", Rhaenyra smiled sweetly at him.

"And to you my little one, you are now officially a Targaryen. Y/N Targaryen."

Viserys kissed you lovingly on the forehead and handed you over to Daemon. When Daemon held you again, he looked at you. He smiled. The warm purple eyes that beamed at him warmed his heart. He kissed you gently on the forehead and murmured, "My little dragon." As Daemon and Rhaenyra left the room, they were happy. Rhaenyra had to wipe away a few tears, but she was happy.

You look up into your father's face, "Naah I'm fine. I'm just excited. I mean, I haven't seen my uncles and aunt in years… Haven't heard from them… That's weird. We kind of grew up together and then all of a sudden it was just nothing. I'm excited to see how they've changed."

"How Aemond changed?", Daemon looks at you with a smirk.

You blush and look at your father in shock. "Dad! No!"

Daemon raises his eyebrows and looks at you, "Well, this "no" came a little quickly", he still smirks at you.

"Well I mean.. yeah we were close but we haven't talked since and I don't even know if he still likes me or what he's like now", and your hands were fiddling with your dress again. Your mother recognises your distress and encourages you by taking hold of your knee.

"Everything's fine, it's going to be nice. We'll spend the couple of weeks here, enjoying the festivities for Aegon and Helaena's wedding, and then we'll head back"

You smile at your mother. And then you look at your father and you say, "Also, I'm nervous because I wasn't allowed to fly here with Meraxes. Now I don't have any kind of adequate defense when you're bugging me with statements like that."

Daemon just chuckles and looks at you naggingly. Rhaenyra scowls at Daemon, but he simply takes her hand and kisses it. As you roll your eyes and look out the window, you realize you've arrived. Now you are full of nervousness. As the carriages come to a halt, a voice outside the carriage calls out "Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen…" And with that you step out of the carriage behind your parents and see your relatives.

And you just smile.

I have to put a trigger warning (suicidal thoughts and swear words) on this post and I’m doing this before I’ve even written my text. I’m sorry. I only need to scream my pain out.

1, 5 years. 535 days. 12840 hours. 770400 minutes. 46 224 000 seconds. Approximately.

1,5 years ago, my life became my personal hell. I feel captured in my own useless body…captured in my goddamn dark room, captured in my fucking overstimulated mind. And who’s my sadistic prison guard? It’s this cruel bitch of a disease ME/CFS!

Wasn’t it enough yet?! Am I such a horrible human being, that I really deserved even more shit in my life?! There have been so many ordeals in my life…so many rough times, disabilities and diseases…so much anxiety and stress to deal with!!! What have I done wrong to deserve all of these dreadful things?! Seriously, what have I done?!?

I must be some kind of a magnet for disasters…I can’t explain it in any other way to myself. Maybe, I’ve just yelled “here!” for all these experiences…maybe I’ve volunteered accidentally?!? Watching your parents fighting night after night until you have to intervene again and again? Here! Being sexually abused at the age of 12 years? Here! Being raped at the age of 15 years? Here! Multiple surgeries and endless pain? Here! Domestic violence? Here! Multiple Miscarriages? Here! Months of pregnancy staying in bed at the hospital? Here! Fighting for the lives of your extremely premature born children without a partner on your side, even though they were the result of ICSI treatment? Here! Colitis Ulcerosa? Here! OCD? Here! Disability? Here! Several other severe illnesses? Here! Getting ME/CFS and being doomed to a life in darkness and silence? Here! Here, here, here!!!!!!!!! Fuck me sideways!

Is it me? Am I the problem?! What have I done wrong! Tell me, God, what shall I do to end this madness…to finish this suffering?! I’m already broken!

And yes, I know, I have three wonderful children….and I’m forbidding myself to leave them behind…to leave them alone. They need their mother. I know that all. But seeing the sadness in their little faces every day…noticing the disappointment in their voices every fucking day…it’s breaking me.

I’ve tried to have dinner together with my children tonight. Therefore, I wore my noise canceling headphones, my sunglasses and I told them to be as quiet as possible. And still….still….fuck! Their movements, their voices, when they spoke all at once…the light in our dining room…everything was too much for me!! I got disoriented…overwhelmed by this overstimulation. All I could do, was to close my eyes and to wait until dinner was over. I couldn’t eat or drink, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t interact with my children the way, they deserved to be treated by their mother! So…what kind of mother am I now? I’m just a shadow of the mother…of the person, I’ve been, before ME/CFS started to destroy me. I’m only a pathetic failure. My children deserve more than that!

I’m hopeless…and all I want is to let myself fall…just like Julia lets herself fall into the tempting abyss in this heart wrenching drawing, which I’ve commissioned from my dear friend @madfantasy. I’ve told Mani to make Severus come and save her. He’s there…holding her back…grabbing her in the very last moment, screaming “Stay with me, Jules!”. Severus is her last anchor. Severus is my anchor. I won’t let myself fall with him by my side.

Mani, my precious friend, I can’t tell you how grateful I am, that you were brave enough to give my cruel fantasy a face. I know, that my dark thoughts can be overwhelming, especially for someone, who’s also struggling with their own mental health. I’m apologizing for the way, I’m pouring out my grief and despair over your marvelous artwork. But you’re the only artist, who’s capable of getting a grasp on my emotions and transforming them into something so powerful, so delightful like your art. Thank you for everything, my dear. 🫂🫂 (Fly fly)

Similar to dark knights of steel but not in medieval times. The El's all survived the end of their planet. Bruce Wayne's biological father is Jor-El.. Major angst as Talia, Bruce, Jor-El, Lara, Thomas and Martha are all deceased.

Damian asks his uncle to help him protect Gotham and his children. So he, can help Y/N recover from the worsening fear toxin that had inflicted her.

Even though her ill state made her feel weak. Y/N continues onto her nightly routine of checking on the family to ensure their safety and because she truly missed them.

She began doing this. After that terrible night Jason returned in a near deathly state. Though also she had been in a very distraught place after Scare-Crows fear toxin.. She was to put it simply still recovering.

Like a silent cat she checked on Grayson. The little boy was snoring clinging to his little stuffed elephant. They had gotten it for him for Christmas. She softly smiled at how cute he looked.

She continued on, she saw Alfred laying sound asleep on his bed.. Good. The kind old man needs his rest..

She departs for Jason's room finding her son on his bed asleep with his finger in between the pages of his favorite book. She takes the book putting in the bookmark and places it on his nightstand.

She went to Tim's room his laptop on as he laid in bed asleep. She rolled her eyes. She steps to turn off the laptop and places it on his desk..

She then checked on Stephanie as she was clinging to her purple blanket sleeping heavily. She moved the covers to cover her little feet.

She steps as quietly as she can stepping to Cassandra's room. She sees her daughter laying completely still as she was asleep.

She departs to Duke's room. He was sound asleep. She knew he would be up soon and off to patrol.

Just then her headache appears again. So she, left him so he could sleep for the remainder of the time he desires. Hoping he didn't hear her.

Duke wakes hearing a soft shivering. He opens his bedroom door not seeing anyone in his presence. He uses his powers to look in the past few moments. Duke sighed heartbroken for his, adopted mother. He reaches for his phone calling his adopted dad. Damian answered the phone while in the Bat-cave.

"Y/N needs you"

Y/N sits on the seat of the toilet with a cold dampen cloth to wash away her feverish sweat. In hopes it would also cool down her body's rising temperature as well. She, wanted to takes a shower but was afraid she might trip and fall.

As much as she fights it, she can't.. Her mind keeps going to Slade's sword impaling through her husband's chest. Though it wasn't real. It wasn't real. It was not REAL. Her husband is OK, her babies are OK and Alfred's OK. She began to shake in her throat unable to convince herself with her own thoughts.

She yelps loudly seeing a figure touch her hands. She takes a deep breath in and out forcing herself to calm down.

"I did not mean to startle you my love" he placed his knuckles on her face that felt a concerning amount of warmth against his skin "your sickness is worsening" he sympathized

He reaches to her letting her body rest against his own. While supporting her. Damian carefully takes the cloth and cleans the remaining sweat. She instinctively leans into him feeling vulnerable knowing she is truly safe.

He kisses her head as she leans even more into him "I'm here.. I'm right here"

He leans, slightly away. She gripped his arms. She couldn't be away from him. She was scared. Her pleading eyes touch his heart breaking it for he was truly worried for her.

"don't be afraid Beloved. I'm not leaving. I'm only starting a, shower for us" he promised her

She let's go nodding as she trust him to take care of her. After their shower Damian carried her into their bedroom.

Damian dresses her in her most comfortable clothes and then dresses himself. She laid in the bed as her husband placed a cold dampen cloth on her forehead. Her fever continues to calm down and raise throughout the night.

He had long ago given her medicine to help with her fever but to her his hands relieved more pain than anything else ever could.

"I.. Love.." she shivered as her voice shook

He kindly smiled and kisses her lips softly "I love you too"

As her eyes close and she began to fade into slumber.. He closed his eyes and rest his hand on his face. His guilt festered into anger and settled in like a infected wound on his heart. Damian felt it was his fault she was hurting and with that he neglected to realize how much pain she is in.

He can't leave her.....

Damian stepped out to the balcony reaching for his phone. Damian knew he could trust him. He calls him, while looking at his sleeping wife...

Damian listened to her heartbeat, a trait given by his Kryptonite biology from his father. Although he did not have all the abilities from his paternal grandfather. He could hear from great distances, run at great speeds and his strength was close to uncle's.

"Damian are you ok?" the man of steel asked slightly concerned in his tone

It was not common for Damian to call him. So naturally he was feeling genuinely worried for his deceased brother's son.. As he knew like his father Damian was not one to call out of blue.

"I'm fine Uncle.. It.. It is regarding Y/N"

"I heard she has been sick. Is she getting worse? Or did you catch it? I can be over to assist in anyway Dami" Clark offered

"it's not contagious. She breathed in Scarecrows fear toxin. She is not recovering as quickly with the antidote. Do to the toxins have been modified and for such reason it has prolonged her recovery... Gotham needs protection and I cannot lay the full burden of Gotham onto my children..."

"I understand. I'll be there to make sure Gotham and your family remain safe. Before I let you go.. I know you are your father's son.. Don't continue blaming yourself for her suffering. You are a good father and husband Damian"

"I.. " he wanted to say thank you but it felt too deep to speak further.

"I know kid. I know.." he repeated solemnly remembering his brother who was so much like his nephew.

He hoped he was saying all the right things to his nephew. He still remembered Bruce's last request that he look after his little boy. Clark promised his brother and tried to be there for Damian ever since.

The Dark Knight returned to his bed with his spouse. Damian closes his eyes trying to calm down his deepening worry as he focused on her heartbeat that was like a, soothing melody.

That following night did not bring comfort as unfortunately. Y/N's fever begins to fester yet again.

So again Damian stands beside the bed. His hands hold a dampen cloth soothing all across her body. Finally the her fever calmed down. As he finished soothing her, he tossed the cloth into the laundry hamper. He takes his hands and massages all her aches and pains from the toxins angering her nerves.

The door began knocking. Damian listened hearing all his children's heartbeats. His hands hold her face as he smiled softly and kisses her.

"your children miss you. If you need more rest before you see them, it's OK. I can tell them to give you--" she grips his arm

"nooo.." she takes a deep breath "I need to see them.. Please"

Damian lays the blanket back on her "come in" Damian announces to them

Stephanie slowly opened the door forcing a smile to hide her worry. Jason softly gasped at the state of his mother and tightly closed his eyes. Tim distracted his worries and comforted Dick who was nearly in tears. Steph begins rubbing Jason's back as the young boy's throat shakes. Cass hugged Duke's arm tightly to not only feel comfort as she was truly worried but to comfort her big brother.

"she'll be OK" Damian encouraged "come kiss your mother goodnight. So she's not worrying about you as she tries to sleep" Damian said.

The Tortured Poets Department but it’s all tbosas (two favorite things combined, cannot get any better. Both pivotal for my well-being) 🤍

1. Fortnight

A period of 14 days, so I’d like to say it’s something the mentors put together during the preparation and running of the hunger games. Perhaps even one of the tributes? Though I believe the calamitous events of suffering went on for a week or so (reaping to death)

2. The tortured poets department

Definitely about our dear favorite covey. Referencing to themselves as tortured poets in the way of being locked down, unable to use their voices to express their minds freely due to peacekeepers banning their songs (such as with the hanging tree) The feeling of being told what’s right and wrong about THEIR EMOTIONS. Obviously also from the mistreatment.

3. My boy only breaks his favorite toys

Ladies, gentlemen and beautiful souls - it’s time for a Lucy Gray ballad about Billy Taupe begging at her feet, as well as Coriolanus fucking up. I don’t believe it would be a downbeat melody, but a real statement.

4. Down bad

Coryo realizing he’s in love with both the lovely district 12 songbird, and his handsome friend originally from 2. Said what I said.

5. So long, London (So long, Panem)

A song the covey’s ancestors left behind as they got killed during the dark days. It’s about how they saw Panem change, and that what they used to know is long gone. Their nomadic days are over. Their freedom is gone.

6. But daddy I love him

OKAYOKAY my very first thought was Sejanus confessing with teary eyes to his father about his feelings and caring for Coriolanus. How he wishes him the best even if he got caught cheating in the game.

7. Fresh out the slammer

CORIOLANUS COMIN BACK FROM 12 HAHA

8. Florida!!! (Once again, we’re changing it to “Panem!!!”)

Grandma’am singin about her beloved country of Panem. Poor Tigris and Coryo are about to suffer through another one of her banger morning concerts.

9. Guilty as sin?

Lucy Gray accused herself, putting the blame on herself for being “responsible” for the deaths of children in the arena. Wouldn’t point directly onto the victims, but use metaphors to make the situation transparent for those who knew her in and out.

10. Who’s afraid of little old me?

Young age, old soul. Why am I imagining Maude Ivory singing something about people not taking her seriously cause of her age. Invalidating her feelings & fear when Lucy Gray got reaped.

11. I can fix him (No really I can)

First thought is ironically enough Livia Cardew? Though I believe a great amount of people viewed the blond boy’s change as an empowerment of the state, unwilling to even try and change his obvious controversial behavior (apart from dear Tigris)

12. Loml

Barb Azure to her girlfriend <3 IDK I THINK IT’S SO CUTE?!?! Now let’s wait and see if it really means “love of my life”, or ends up being “loss of my life”.

13. I can do it with a broken heart

Lucy Gray can do anything at any fateful condition. Even with a broken heart she will kick the ass of anyone who does her wrong.

14. The smallest man who ever lived

SLAP EM LUCY GRAY BAIRD. Definitely pointed against her former lovers assholes who betrayed her. None of them will ever manage to break her, because she’s stronger than any haunting scar.

15. The alchemy

GAUL GAUL GAUL LMAO. The most absurd thing about this scary woman is how she enjoys chemistry and biological genetic engineering?

16. Clara Bow

Old covey song from centuries ago about a tortured actress, first it-girl and country’s thirsting desire.

OUAT Rewatch: Season 1

I started writing down my thoughts as I watched each episode, and got kind of carried away with it as I got further in! So here are my thoughts on most of the episodes of Season 1 of Once Upon a Time.

(Spoilers for future seasons are noted in parentheses.)

Episode 2 “The Thing You Love Most”

~ Emma and Regina both have a death/rebirth moment involving fire. The first leads into the second: Emma burns the pages about her birth, and Regina burns her father’s heart.

~ The fact that Regina was willing to sacrifice her father impresses upon the audience the possibility that the young Henry could also become collateral damage in her effort to destroy everyone’s happiness.

Episode 4 “The Price of Gold”

~ I had forgotten about Henry’s Cinderella moment, losing his shoe as he goes up the stairs!

Episode 5 “That Still Small Voice”

~ The fact that Geppetto’s parents turned into puppets raises a lot of questions about both character and worldbuilding. Why did Geppetto decide to make Pinocchio? Why was the Blue Fairy able to bring Pinocchio to life, but not Geppetto’s parents?

Episode 6 “The Shepherd”

~ “Remember what happened to Frederick” sounds like a throwaway line, like an allusion to a tragicomic incident in Midas’ past, but it’s actually setup for a later episode in this season!

~ David is like his namesake in the Bible, as he starts out as a shepherd but then becomes a king.

Episode 7 “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”

~ What Regina did to the Huntsman—basically making him her sex slave—is really horrendous, and seems to be unknown to everyone else. The series moves along in such a way that it seems the audience is meant to forget about him.

~ (Spoiler:) What happened to the Huntsman when Snow and Charming took back the kingdom from Regina? Did he remain in her thrall to the very end? Could they not have rescued him at some point?

~ Emma makes a good point about how Regina drives away the people she claims to love. She reminds me a little of Orual, the queen and stepsister in Till We Have Faces.

~ Graham’s fate shows that when Regina cannot control something, she will try to destroy it.

Episode 8 “Desperate Souls”

~ Mr. Gold says, “I do hope they won’t break my little bell.” Was this foreshadowing Belle?!

Episode 9 “True North”

~ In Storybrooke, Ava and Nicholas are repeatedly shown eating candy or dessert!

~ I don’t like Emma’s harsh characterization of the foster system, like all foster families are in it only for the money. There are good, decent foster parents out there. Every foster kid’s experience is different, and Emma’s was pretty unusual in that she had no parents but was never permanently adopted.

~ I think this is the first time we see Regina trying to take someone else’s children to keep as her own. It’s interesting in that it shows how long she has wanted a family, and how long she sought it in the wrong ways.

Episode 10 “7:15 A.M.”

~ I love Snow and Grumpy’s relationship! They’re kind of polar opposites, unflagging optimism versus jaded pessimism. But they have some qualities in common, like loyalty and determination.

~ I wish we got to see more of the dwarves’ dynamics. Stealthy deserved better! And he speaks so casually about Doc making knockout gas!

~ It’s kind of beautiful that on the night their brother dies, the dwarves take in Snow, who has pretty much lost everything.

Episode 11 “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree”

~ (Spoiler:) Henry was recording the stories long before he became the Author! Kind of fitting that his scene (not) talking about it is with August, who eventually reveals the role of the Author.

Episode 12 “Skin Deep”

~ Belle’s very first line on the show is an expression of hope in Rumplestiltskin.

~ The princesses/heroines going on a girls’ night is a cool idea!

~ It is rather remarkable that Rumplestiltskin lets Belle leave for that errand. It’s like that saying, “If you love something, set it free, and if it loves you, it will come back.” Either he trusts that she’ll keep her word, or he hopes she cares enough about him to come back. But if she had taken that opportunity to leave, would he have punished her or her town?

~ Rumple’s tantrum is on a level with Kylo Ren, destroying everything in a given room.

~ Rumple is shown smashing most of the tea service, then sparing the chipped cup. But then, the chipped cup and a teapot are shown in Belle’s cell. Did he bring her food, or magically transport it there, before releasing her?

~ The sorcerer’s apprentice’s hat is visible in Rumple’s home!

~ The moment when Rumple puts the cup on a pedestal and cries over it—somehow that, to me, is the most Beauty and the Beast moment. It’s the part of the story expressed in “If I Can’t Love Her Reprise” in the stage show and “Evermore” in the 2017 movie. He believes he has lost her forever, and he is haunted by her memory, which he nevertheless still treasures.

~ It seems that Regina manipulated both Belle in the past and Mo in the present, in order to get Rumple/Gold to turn on them.

Episode 13 “What Happened to Frederick”

~ Granny saying “If you won’t, I will” regarding August reminds me of the grandma in Mulan seeing Shang for the first time.

~ The idea that “something lost will be returned to you” through water sounds like the song “All is Found” from Frozen II.

~ I wondered why the camera paused for so long on that guy Kathryn bumped into at the school; turns out it was Frederick!

~ The red spray paint in Regina’s desk draw suggests she, or someone working for her, was the one who spray-painted “tramp” on Mary Margaret’s car!

Episode 14 “Dreamy”

~ After seeing Snow and Grumpy’s first meeting earlier in the season, it’s great to finally see their Storybrooke counterparts interact! They really are an odd, unlikely pair, but that’s what makes their friendship so endearing.

~ I also love Belle and Grumpy’s friendship, which we see begin in this episode.

~ Interesting that when Belle gets her freedom, she does not return to her village. It must be the first time she is truly free, without any responsibility, so she makes it last a while!

~ Dreamy/Grumpy’s storyline in this episode seems to go against the backstory he shared with Snow. Did he later regret his actions and try to win Nova back?

~ I hated what Granny did and said to Mary Margaret in the previous episode, but I love that they have a nonverbal reconciliation in this one, with Granny lighting her candle.

Episode 15 “Red-Handed”

~ I love the visuals of this episode, with Red’s cloak contrasted against Snow’s white ensemble. The shots of Red and Snow tracking through the snowfall are beautiful—that had to be real snow, right?

~ After meeting and staying with Red, Snow adopts her hairstyle with a ribbon in a braid.

~ David and Red experience the same thing in their respective timelines, having gaps in their memory and wondering if they are the culprit of a crime.

~ It seems a little odd that Red doesn’t suspect Snow, a stranger who showed up the night of the attack, of being the wolf.

~ I think Red should have been the one to have the idea to talk to Peter, rather than Snow suggesting it.

~ So many characters in this season say “I hope you find what you’re looking for.”

Episode 16 “Heart of Darkness”

~ I wish we saw more of Snow White’s time living with the dwarves. Then again, I wish it had been during a happier period of her life, when she was not suffering from a broken heart or memory loss.

~ Henry deals with an emotional blow the same way his mothers and other characters do: getting a drink at Granny’s bar!

~ “Evil doesn’t always look evil. Sometimes it’s staring right at us, and we don’t even realize it.” So true!

~ Snow’s reconciliation with the dwarves is so sweet, and I love seeing them line up to help her!

~ Cutting from Gold telling Emma “You’re more powerful than you know” to Rumple bottling her parents’ hairs to make the magic of love + the high-pitched version of Snow and Charming’s theme = brilliant!

Episode 17 “Hat Trick”

~ This is the episode that feels most contrived in this season. Mary Margaret breaking out right after Emma asked her to have faith in her, and Emma being so kind and trusting toward Jefferson, both seem out of character. A core part of Emma’s personality—one that she works to overcome throughout the series—is that she protects herself and does not trust people easily. She is not the type to go into a strange man’s home and drink something he prepared. The whole detour is even more odd because she’s supposed to be searching for her missing friend.

~ “I’d rather lose my job than my friend.” Yeah Emma! Granted, she hasn’t had many friends in her life, so it makes sense that she would be protective of Mary Margaret, the only friend that hasn’t let her down in some way.

~ Jefferson promising not to miss Grace’s tea party is like Captain America promising Peggy Carter a dance. (It’s hard not to think about the Marvel films Sebastian Stan has been in while watching him in this show.)

~ Jefferson’s hat seems like a cross between a Portkey in the Harry Potter books, and the Wood Between the Worlds in The Magician’s Nephew. I wonder if that room is based on the one Alice comes to after going down the rabbit hole, where she has to open a door. The door to Oz can also be seen there, foreshadowing its introduction to the show!

~ Jefferson mentions Regina’s father even before he is revealed in the episode! Nice, subtle setup.

~ I wonder if the character of Jefferson is modeled after Sweeney Todd. A hatter and a barber both deal with people’s heads, and the way Jefferson sharpens his scissors made me think of Todd’s razors. Both men also have a daughter whom they were unjustly separated from due to a tyrant.

~ Jefferson raises some big philosophical questions about the nature of story and inspiration. Unfortunately this show tends to either leave those questions unanswered, or does a poor job of trying to answer them.

~ All the setup is there foreshadowing that Cora is the Queen of Hearts. But who is the King of Hearts? How did he end up with her, and what was their relationship like?

~ If Jefferson was stuck in Wonderland, how did he end up in Storybrooke? Didn’t the curse only touch the Enchanted Forest?

~ Emma is an amazingly convincing actress and liar. She comes across as so sympathetic, even when terrified, and she might be mixing truths into her acting.

~ Emma actually starts believing at the end! Maybe her belief would have grown if August didn’t make it so personal.

Episode 1x18 “The Stable Boy”

~ (Spoiler:) Cora wears a heart-shaped pendant, even before she became the Queen of Hearts—and ironically, when her own heart was no longer inside her.

~ The scene of Cora and young Snow is hard to watch, knowing what Cora has already done and what Snow will do. And it’s no wonder Snow caved in: she’s never seen duplicity in anyone, especially not a mother.

~ So much foreshadowing when Cora talks about the sacrifices she had to make.

~ Bailee Madison does a fantastic job of imitating Ginnifer Goodwin’s mannerisms. She adds even more childlike innocence and naivete to Snow’s idealism.

~ It’s fitting that Ruby is the one to find Kathryn, after being the one to find the box with the heart; but there could have been another scene, or even just a shot, to show how she’s been doing since then. She was pretty torn up about it, and she must be relieved to be able to set things right.

Episode 1x19 “The Return”

~ I had forgotten that Emma suspects Gold of kidnapping Kathryn. I’m glad this was addressed, because it seems to be forgotten as other storylines push forward.

~ I kind of wish that at some point, they had showed Rumple stopping the battle in the Ogre Wars, rather than the characters just describing it. It must have been an incredible moment for him, as someone who had always been afraid and was too scared to go to battle when he was enlisted.

~ The misdirection in this episode is kind of brilliant. August goes to the Mother Superior to ask for advice about his father, and Rumple thinks it’s Baelfire going to the Blue Fairy as he did in the past, but it’s really Pinocchio going to the Blue Fairy to seek advice about approaching Geppetto/Marco. And then, to top it off, Rumple goes to Jiminy Cricket for advice!

~ What Regina did, causing David to doubt/betray Mary Margaret, and what Mary Margaret describes, poisoning their relationship, is exactly what Satan does.

~ Mary Margaret’s words about the one person you counted on not being there for you is similar to what happens between Rumple and Baelfire in this episode.

~ (Spoiler:) I’m confused about how common magic beans are in the Enchanted Forest. The Blue Fairy says the one she gives Baelfire is the last known to them, and apparently they’re so rare that he needs to construct the Dark Curse to cross worlds. But just a few years later, Hook gets his hands on one; and centuries later, James and Jack talk about them as though they are rare and valuable but not unheard of.

~ For August to deceive Gold by impersonating his long-lost son is pretty cruel.

~ (Spoiler:) August’s actions also don’t quite fit, because it is later revealed that he actually met Neal on at least two separate occasions, one of them while en route to Storybrooke just after Emma arrived.

~ What did Gold hope to get out of August making Emma believe?

~ “He hasn’t been himself for a while.” True in more than one sense for Sidney/Mirror/Genie!

~ Love Emma at the end: she is FIERCELY protective of the people she loves!

Episode 1x20 “The Stranger”

~ Love Henry’s defiant confrontation of Regina!

~ The Blue Fairy says the enchanted tree is the last in the entire realm. I wonder, were there many more, and was that why the land was called the Enchanted Forest?

~ Does the wardrobe just act as a portal? If so, why wasn’t that an option for Rumplestiltskin? Did his magic not mix well with that kind?

~ I don’t understand why Regina tries to seduce David, considering he’s not even on good terms with Mary Margaret at that point. But David handles it like Gawain in “The Green Knight,” chivalrously refusing the temptress’ advances.

~ The shot of Regina downing the rest of her wine, then throwing the glass and breaking the mirror is pretty great!

~ It’s not very surprising that Pinocchio/August strayed from the right path, since Geppetto set an example of dishonesty and selfishness.

~ I forgot what a strong and emotional reaction Emma has to August’s revelation. From the way she talks, it sounds like on some level she does believe, but she doesn’t want to admit it because she’s so afraid of the responsibility it would put on her. I wonder if she also fears what it would mean for her relationships with her friends/family, since she has such mixed feelings about her parents.

~ How did Emma get home, if she left August behind in the woods? Did they both go back on his motorcycle? Or did she hitchhike or something?

~ It looks like Marco owns a sailboat, even after what happened with Monstro!

~ Emma and Geppetto both try to put their children’s wellbeing before that of the community.

~ Looking at Emma’s overall journey, her “refusal of the call” story beat really lasts this entire season!

Episode 1x21 “An Apple Red as Blood”

~ I’m very curious as to when Regina figured out that Emma was the Savior, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. She seemed to have her first inkling in Episode 2, but when did she become certain?

~ (Spoiler:) It’s interesting that killing Emma would break the curse. Was that foreshadowing the Final Battle of Season 6?

~ Henry’s desperate act at the end of the episode makes sense after his final conversation with August, who seems to already be at the “all is lost” beat of the story before the hero decides to keep fighting.

~ “You may have wakened the sleeping dragon.” Was that setup for next episode?

~ Subtle foreshadowing from Archie: it’s true that Regina wouldn’t directly, intentionally hurt Henry, but it’s quite possible for him to get hurt by her efforts to hurt others.

~ “Is this how it’s always gonna be? Us taking turns finding each other?” “We will be together.” Both were right!

~ Interesting to see Emma wearing a skirt and Regina wearing pants when they talk. It’s almost a reversal of their usual attire.

~ There is no way would Emma eat anything Regina made, especially now, knowing that she tried to frame Mary Margaret.

~ I hadn’t realized that Henry falls exactly the same way his grandmother Snow does after eating the apple!

Episode 1x22 “A Land Without Magic”

~ I love that they brought Graham back for the finale, and he’s still protecting Snow! I guess even though Regina his heart, he still has some autonomy.

~ That might be the longest and most ominous title sequence yet!

~ Does picking up the book make Emma actually see, or remember, the flashbacks to her birth? Is it meant to be like Moses in The Prince of Egypt?

~ The look on Emma’s face when Regina reveals Mr. Gold’s real name could be interpreted two ways: A) she is incredulous that they are talking seriously about fairy tale characters; B) she is horrified to learn that Gold is that particular villainous character.

~ Does Regina have the power to just transport anyone anywhere, even remotely? That’s a formidable power from a strategy perspective.

~ Charming is so done with Rumple and all these villains!

~ Did Emma not see Jefferson lurking in the hospital room? Why is Regina comfortable leaving him there with Henry?

~ It’s really telling that Emma goes to see August before going to battle. She is not seeking any material help, just moral support. Then he ends up filling the role of the fallen mentor whose death motivates the hero.

~ It’s pretty symbolic that the town’s library isn’t running! Just like the clock until Emma came.

~ I forgot that Emma sees Snow’s coffin!

~ When you think about it, putting the egg inside Maleficent was really a violation of her person. (Spoiler: Was she carrying it inside her the next few times Snow and Charming saw her, as shown in Season 4?)

~ Mary Margaret probably reads the book to Henry while he’s in the coma because when she did that for David it woke him up.

~ Does Jefferson work for the hospital? That’s the only explanation I can think of for how he obtained a uniform, knew the passcode, could give the desk nurse a drink without being questioned, and knew that Belle was there.

~ How did Jefferson know about Belle’s connection to Mr. Gold?

~ Emma’s fight with the dragon might be symbolic of her own internal battle.

~ When she destroys the dragon, she looks like she’s exhausted and can’t believe she just did that.

~ I’m confused about the timeline in the present day. It looked like Emma went down the elevator shortly before midnight, but when David gets in his car it’s 7:00 a.m.

~ The Mother Superior must be a hospital chaplain. I wonder who called her to Henry’s room—somehow I doubt Regina would ask for a religious person to come if anything happened to her son.

~ Ironic that Regina is the one to say “You did it” when Emma breaks the curse(s)!

~ Henry looks at Emma with so much pride!

~ Such a good finale!

So I've been ruminating on my canon protagonist for DA4 and decided to answer the same oc asks as my other canon protags, so here we go! As always, link is below;

Leya (Dwarf Warrior)

1. Leya really likes her name! She also loves it when people make cute nicknames with it, especially if they're creative since it's such a short name.

2. The first thing a person would notice about Leya would be her vitiligo. She has generalised segmental vitiligo, that covers both eyes and parts of her face in an asymmetrical way, and then moves down her neck and disappears under the left side of her collar.

3. Her social and private personality rarely differ actually! She's cheerful, sunny and optimistic, and friendly to a fault, and in private she's just as positive. She doesn't really like being alone though, and when she is for long durations of time, she can get melancholy.

4. Ooh gosh, Leya falls in love very easily, but has never had a relationship that worked out long term. But when she is around her crush? She's giggly, attentive and doesn't hesitate to express her feelings towards that person (if she feels they would be comfortable with it of course).

5. Someone break the news to her that she should never play card games with money on the line! She has a very obvious tell when she lies- she fiddles with a piece of jewellery, usually her nose ring.

6. Other than her natural one (soaps and flour, she does plenty of cooking/baking), she usually smells of her moisturising balm- hibiscus and coconut! I imagine her liking soothing smells most of the time, switching up with something more citrus-y now and then.

7. Leya has hair somewhere between 3c and 4a hair texture- she usually has her hair in many long and thick braids that is usually half pulled up to keep her hair out of her face.

8. She likes to wear a lot of jewellery, but her most distinguishing piece is her gold nose ring. She often wears multiple earrings, large and small and often has a couple of necklaces on her- but she doesn't wear any rings if she can help it!

9. I feel like Leya is the kind of person to overuse the word 'amazing' or 'fantastic' to be honest! Just everything is amazing or fantastic like c'mon girl use another descriptor.

10. I absolutely adore the idea of her snorting when she laughs properly. She's shy about it and usually tames her laughs to giggles, but if you get her laughing for real she can't stop snorting and it only makes everything funnier.

11. Leya looks absolutely gorgeous in turquoise!! Anything on the blue-green scale just looks stunning on her.

12. Platonically? She shows her affection to her friends by being very encouraging, complimentary, and will offer them hugs for days! She's the heart-on-her-sleeve kind of person. With her lover? My god she's a damn cuddle bug. On top of all her compliments, she shows her affection very physically- hand holding, holding each other, playing with their hair, face stroking, the works.

13. She is certainly very capable of making strong, consistent eye contact, but she doesn't like the idea of making someone uncomfortable with it so she wants to check if someone doesn't mind it first.

14. Leya has inherited her mother's dark grey eyes, but little else haha! She is the spitting image of her father, from her nose to her smile, and seems to have inherited his (ex)sunny disposition too. She is the eldest of six, and out of all of the children she takes after her father the most, with her youngest sister looking like she'll take after their mother the most.

15. Leya's greatest strength is for sure their optimisim- they have been able to get through all the tribulations in her life with it, and it was a strength she needed when she had to look after her younger siblings after their mother passed away in an accident. But I'd say it is also connected to her greatest weakness, in which she trusts far too easily and it has burned her over and over.

16. The death of her mother and the subsequent absence of her father when she was young (around 17) has definitely shaped her outlook on life- she needed to be a strong, positive force in her sibling's lives and essentially fill the roll of both parents for them. This has meant that while she understands that life is not fair to the kind, she needs to be kind nonetheless and be a good role model for others.

UK Trip October 2023 (Part 1)

(oh boy I have missed doing one of these!)

This was the first time travelling since the pandemic began, so of course there was a bit of stress while prepping for this trip. But because we were careful throughout the trip, we avoided anything that could have hindered us.

This felt like a part two to our trip back in 2019, with some unfinished business finally feeling finished. And yet, with only two weeks of travel time, even more unfinished business was made!

Like our previous trip, our flight would leave in the middle of the day, so we had to wake up pretty early in order to get to SFO, check-in, and board the plane on time.

Unfortunately for us, we didn't get much sleep that night. We also used a different ride-share service this time, rather than taking the bus, because our schedules would have conflicted.

We met up at 7:15, and had a good chat with our driver for almost the entire trip, who was from a small town in the Balkans of Bulgaria. When he brought this up, I brought up what I knew about the culture, mainly roses and yogurt (cultural knowledge is a really good ice-breaker!) While chatting, we'd deviate to other topics, including computer science and the rise of A.I. As we drove through San Francisco, he even recommended a restaurant to us! (Kevin's Noodle House)

We arrived at the airport after 9 AM, and checked our bags in pretty quickly. Our flight wasn't until 12:30, so we had plenty of time to kill. I did have a little something to eat before going through customs, but alas I wasn't hungry enough didn't have anything else until the flight.

The flight itself wasn't packed at all! I'm so used to flying during busy seasons, and this flight was like half full! We even got to move to an empty row so we could have a space to ourselves! (Thanks Shawn!)

While we wanted to be careful and were prepared to wear our masks during the flight, because we had plenty of space (There was someone in the row ahead of us, but they slept almost the entire flight, and an empty row in front of them) we didn't really need to! There was also plenty of hand sanitizer on board which I used multiple times to keep my mind at ease. And there were no screaming babies! It was a very pleasant flight!

Wildfire over Idaho?

Entertainment-wise, I got to watch two films on the flight:

'6/45': a funny Korean film about soldiers from the North and South fighting over a winning lottery ticket across the DMZ

'Lost Love': a bittersweet Hong Kong film about a couple who recently lost their young child to an illness, eventually trying out fostering children

Also got to listen to some 80s and 90s music (no 60s or 70s anymore it seems, RIP)

During the night portion of our trip, I saw the stars so clearly (alas I couldn't take good photos) It's also been a while since I've arrived in LHR during the dark. Day just started to break as we were landing.

Once we got to LHR, we travelled by rail to stay at a friend of mum's for a couple of nights (first time taking the Elizabeth Line! Though there were some delays)

When we got there, mum's friend drove us to Hastings and gave us a bit of a tour along the beachside.

Note: I'm using an old camera that has a few cracks in the lens that is unfortunately visible in some photos like the one above. I won't be sharing much of these.

They had a cute working mini railway! With a proper mini crossing!

Stopped to have a sample of some fudge (it was really really good, mum commented it was how her mum used to make it, I wish I had more!)

The Body Of Christ Has Many Parts

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 In this article, the scripture text also serves as the introduction. Paul presented a beautiful illustration of the makeup of the church and how it should function. The children’s song called “Jesus Loves the Little Children” captures the heart of how the apostle described the body of Christ. “Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.” Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 He went on to say the body has many different parts, not just one part. He emphasized the phrase “many different parts.” - If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. - And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 1 Corinthians 12:15-16 Of course, for the human body, a foot is a foot and not a hand. And eyes are for seeing while ears take care of hearing. Each part has its own unique function which makes up the whole body. If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 1 Corinthians 12:17

Functions of the Different Parts of the Body

Paul made these descriptions sound as absurd as he could. Why? Because body parts don’t change places nor do they compete with each other. God specifically made each one of them. But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 1 Corinthians 12:18 The Lord not only put each part where He wanted them, but they each have their own function. Out of the 78 organs in the body, we consider some important and others weak. In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 1 Corinthians 12:22 Paul said more things about the human body and its parts. You can turn to 1 Corinthians 12 to read what else he said. He made a huge point to clarify the importance of each part of the body.

We Make Up the Body of Christ

Just like God made the human body with many parts, the body of Christ also functions with many parts. And we Christians, make up all of those parts. All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27 - Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: - first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, - then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, - those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, - those who speak in unknown languages. 1 Corinthians 28 Let me remind you that this list represents only some of the parts of the body of Christ. The apostle by no means gave us a complete list in this portion of scripture. He did, however, use this list for a specific purpose. He showed us that each part of the body of Christ has a responsibility to properly function. - Are we all apostles? - Are we all prophets? - Are we all teachers? - Do we all have the power to do miracles? - Do we all have the gift of healing? - Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? - Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? - Of course not! 1 Corinthians 12:29-30 At the beginning of the next verse, Paul made a statement that we could contemplate in two ways. So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:31 The first way, we might ask, “How can I be the most helpful in this given situation?” Or we could look at it another way and ask, “What am I good at doing that is helpful to others?”

1 Corinthians 12 to Chapter 13

Scholars divided the Bible into chapters and verses giving us easy references to its text. In my opinion, the break between chapters 12 and 13 happened in the middle of an important thought. The apostle expanded his thoughts on the functionality of the body of Christ with the following statement. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. 1 Corinthians 12:31

Let me give you a clue of what must saturate every gift given by God and every Christian’s life. In the 13 verses of 1 Corinthians 13, the apostle used the word “love” 8 times. God created the body of Christ to work effortlessly together with Jesus as the head. He has glued the entire body of Christ together with a quality that will last forever — “Love.” Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 Lord, thank you for giving us gifts that enable us each to uniquely function in the body of Christ. Things I love about Kingsley

I've been going through a shitty mental health period and need something positive in my life. So here are some of the things I love about Kingsley, my weird ass fantasy noir about the angry queer anthro crocodiles rebelling and giving middle fingers to colonial asshats.

1. Honestly, I love the protagonist, Kingsley 😅 he’s a little shit but he’s my little shit. He’s paranoid, he’s over dramatic, he’s sarcastic, he’s treacherous, he tortures/murders people, he friends w/ a Demon, he’s manipulative, & he’s scared. All his life he’s been afraid.

2. I love that the story is told through different formats & timelines. It is told through memoirs, letters, journals, and articles. The timeline is the past and the future so you can see how the past affects our concept of the future and the future affects our concept of the past

3. I love that the narrators are unreliable and the narrative is at war with itself. That the reader has to decide who they want to trust without really knowing how much truth they’re actually getting.

4. I love that Kingsley, who is sex repressed/awkward, is dating Oisin maybe the most horny character I’ve ever written. And that their relationship is a disastrous mixture of miscommunication, codependency, and all consuming need for stability and control.

5. I love that Kingsley’s worst actions come out of a very human need to have stability, peace, and quiet. That no matter what he does he can’t seem to escape the worst aspects of his life, so why try? That he is open about burning the world down as long as he and his are safe.

6. I love that majority of my characters are queer anthro crocodiles and that in the entire world, humans are the minority. I also love how expansive and diverse (in the human sense and the different non-human beings sense) the world is.

7. I love the catharsis of working through different traumas and letting characters being self-destructive, messy beings that still deserve love and understanding.

8. I love the Alex, the other MC, is an ace nonbinary mess of a journalist who is on the edge ready to jump and their initial solution is to embrace self-harm because that’s less scary then relying on others.

9. I love that Alex’s wife claims to hear the gods and see the future and Alex, a person of science and reason, accepts it because that’s how their wife understands and copes with her abilities and that’s all that matters.

10. I love that Alex and Christine’s relationship allows me to explore how believing that a relationship is only normal and functional if the couple have children is actually harmful.

11. I love that Devin, one of the SCs, is a rake with a heart of gold and he’s so desperate to do the right thing, even when the right thing seems impossible and when he has to choose between his conscience and the cause he chooses his conscience.

12. I love that Devin, the screw up who everyone wrote off as a joke, becomes an important character despite himself

13. As someone who was obsessed with the Nuremberg trials as a teen, I love I get to explore the many complications are international law and what does international accountability look like

14. I love that I pulled in so many noir references and made them my own like the gender nonconforming fatale, the inherit corruption of law and order and government, and the lone journalist who is desperate to find a truth that may not even exist.

15. I love all the Les Miserables references I peppered throughout the novel

16. I f*cking adore Oisin who develops more and more with each draft. He is a sex worker, burlesque dancer, club owner, and the most powerful politician in the country. He is codependent and insecure but also has a will of iron and *will* break you before you ever come close to breaking him.

17. I love Kerry, the aro-ace nonbinary transmasc self-insert who is a grumpy pain in the ass but he’s also a professional and has no time for martyrs or conceited jackasses. He is holding the movement together and desperately fighting for a future where martyrs are no longer needed

18. I love that I got to work in Eric and his family, including his dog, Winston. They’re some of my oldest characters and mean the world to me.

19. I love how complicated and corrupt the politics of this book is. And how big the world is. As an international relations nerd, it’s nice to put my masters to good use. I’m sure my professors are proud haha. 😅

20. I love that the SC, Siegfried, is based on the idea that Enjorlas from Les Miserables could be beautiful and terrible (they’re also both ace in my head so another cool connection they have haha)

A Royal Pain in the Ass

Small content warning for infertility, orphans, and a shitty little kid I love with all my heart.

Elena’s yawn echoed as she walked through the halls of the orphanage, her footsteps practiced in dancing over every divot of tile that had sunk a little too low due to the scampering of thousands of feet over the decades. Yes, she came to know the character of this building well over the life she spent in it.

She was not a morning person, at all. Her late nights made waking up before 9 absolute hell. But without fail, every Sabbath she’d wake up for Sunday Mass. Then make her way to the orphanage where Mother Superior would make use of her act of service by sending her to the kitchens to help feed the kids, help mend torn knees on clothing, or, her absolute favorite, sing and play with them. Listening to their happy babbles, excitedly cooing over a lost tooth, playing pretend that the floor is lava.

Elena loved children. She wanted nothing more than to have as many as she could. To be a mother and switch lounge songs for lullabies. But after 15 years of marriage and not a single hint of pregnancy. By God’s will being a biological mother was not in her cards, and until she married again, adopting was out of the question. The stain of her divorce was too much for an Orphanage to bear. So she will have to forgo a child of her own, born or found, and instead settle with helping to raise hundreds over the two decades since she left these halls as a resident.

Her chores were done, and the kids were all getting ready to head outside for their free time. She was eager to join them. But as her custom, Elena made sure to walk through the wing with the children's rooms. Searching for the newcomers to this sad place, those in mourning not sure of their place in the world. The Nuns were good, wonderful women. But for a newly orphaned child, they could be imposing in their black and white habits, and restrictive schedules necessary to keep the chaos of dozens of children in check.

She used to fear them but as an adult. She knew them to be not only the salt of the earth but also her closest confidantes. And for each new failed relationship she relayed to them, she was sure it was solidifying their decision to abstain from men altogether.

‘They might be onto something”, she thought ruthfully. Elena was a hopeless romantic, and an optimist; but she was freshly alone again. Pablo, Her latest partner, didn’t like that the sexy siren he invented in his head was not that woman off the stage. His insistent, crude, and determined hands refused to match her pace, so she tossed him to the curb. She was obviously not a virgin, and she didn’t see sex out of marriage to be the worst sin one could do. But as it stood, her cheating ex-husband was her first, last, and only man she had ever been with. She needed someone worth breaking the last of her distrustful walls down, instead, they were all determined to make them taller, brick by brick.

She shook these self-centered thoughts away. She was supposed to be performing her acts of service to others. She continued her steps, looking into each room with their two perfectly made beds looking for lonely hearts.

The sound of a lifted mattress and creaky springs broke through the quiet hall. Usually, a kid trying to hide something secret from the Nuns. It was the best hiding spot in the rooms, but best didn’t mean useful. They will find it. They always did.

Elena made sure to make her steps louder, so as not to embarrass whoever was hiding something in that clandestine space. And for good measure, she made sure to knock on the door before turning her head to pass the threshold, to give the kid some extra time. There her eyes fell upon Tito, sitting on the bed pretending like he was reading his comic book in his lap all the while. Tito, like her, was orphaned at 12. That tender age where you feel the severance of a childhood you will never have back so keenly, and the fear of the beginnings of adulthood without a parent to guide you. Also, not an age likely to be adopted. No matter how much you practiced singing and being charming.

Tito was a handful, and a little goblin of a child. But that just made her all the more protective of him. She always wanted to defend the misunderstood, and protect the vulnerable. Everyone deserved a second chance, and children several dozen.

“Hola Senora Elena, you are looking radiant this morning”

“Thank you, Tito. We missed you at Service today. May I ask where you were?”

“I was working, came into a nice windfall of money”.

“Oh Lord,” she chuckled, “who did you hustle?”. Elena said, careful to keep the judgment from her voice. Tito was a master of deflection, and quite clever with his words. He could easily shut down the conversation before she could see how he was really doing. But if she could deal with a crowd of rowdy drunks and turn them into quiet pussycats with just a guitar, she could handle him.

“Elena, you wound me,” he said while bringing his hand to his chest in fake pain, “I run a legitimate small business”.

“Uh-huh,” Elena replied, with a raised brow and a smile. He usually would delight in telling her how much he made if only to scandalize her. So whatever he did, it was more than pocket change. After a pause, Elena allowed her face to ease into her true emotion, concerned over his self-destructive ways. Tito is 14 now, not too long before his mischief will be seen as criminal, where she can’t help him.

Tito reciprocated in kind with his cocky, upturned chin and heavily lidded eyes where he tried to give off an air of apathy. He did hate to see Elena go into concern mode, her big brown eyes softening and showing an adult's real attempt to understand and empathize. He hated that, no one knew what his life was like. She was a good one, one of the few things he didn't lie about to the man this morning. and she may be the least insufferable person he knew. But she still was an adult. He was ready for whatever insipid pep talk she had. But instead, she surprised him.

“You’re growing so much, and your slacks are too short. Do you need a new pair?”

Tito was ready to hit that one back with a crude “If you want to get into my pants that much Elena, just ask.” That would shut her down. But he couldn't. He could shoot that back at a sanctimonious Sister, but not to Elena.

Instead, he relaxed his shoulders, dropped his chin down, and replied, “yes please, Senora Elena.”

She pulled out a small measuring tape from her pocket. Tito sometimes saw her buying fabric scraps at the mercantile market for the pretty dresses she made herself. She wasn’t poor anymore and could afford to buy yards fresh from the bolt. But the habits of poverty were sometimes hard to break.

Pulling the tape, Elena instructed him to stand and as she measured his leg and arms, She decided to catch him off guard. “You are a royal pain in the ass, you know that?”

Elena, full of surprises Tito thought. “Such language Elena, and in front of Dad”. Tito joked laughing, hooking his thumb towards the Crucifix on the wall.

She ignored him. “But I know you’re a good kid”, she added as she wrote down his measurements. She stood up.

“You see the world as dog eat dog. I get it, you were dealt a terrible hand. And this place can feel suffocating”, she gestured to the austere room. “But I wish you would let other people in. Mother Superior, Father Pablo. Let them see the smart, resourceful, and good young man I know you are.”

Tito didn’t see himself as good by any means, only idiots were good. But he decided Elena was the exception, and sometimes he wanted to prove her right.

“I’ll try. No promises… But I’ll try”

“Bueno”. She smiled as she got up to leave. “You should have a new set of clothes by next Sunday. I would love to give them to you before service, but if need be, I will just leave them on your bed.”

Elena turned to leave and decided to make a wild guess, it wasn’t a simple fashion magazine hidden in his bed.

“And if you could, return whatever you stole from under that mattress.”

“You saw that!” Tito was shocked. He thought he heard her coming a mile away. He hoped she didn't see what was on it, the sight of the dude's creepy fantasy life with her and more particular, the two babies would crush her.

“Oh, yes. I see all.”, Elena joked waving her fingers like a mystical fortune teller with a wavering "whoooo", before disappearing from the doorway.

“What a dork,” Tito chortled to himself.
