It makes me so sad seeing people reduce Taylor’s new album to “more of the same old talk about exes”. It’s so much deeper than that. For me, a part of it feels like a somewhat veiled cry about the overwhelming price of her stratospheric fame and the close connection her fans built with her. A strained vent about how it feels for her without putting herself as a victim to it, because she’s nourished this and valued this all along.
There’s also the beautiful, poetic lyrics about her feelings towards her past and current relationships (not exclusively love affairs), that are not about one ex or the other, but about what she took from these relationships, how they built and rebuilt her with time and experience.
As I listened, it felt like a glimpse to the raw, beaten feelings bottled up inside someone who is full of poetry and not that different from any of us at one point or other in our lives.
