New Releases: July 2022
This Way Out by Tufayel Ahmed (1st) Amar can’t wait to tell everyone his wonderful news: he’s found The One, and he’s getting married. But it turns out announcing his engagement on a group chat might not have been the best way to let his strict Muslim Bangladeshi family know that his happy-ever-after partner is a man―and a white man at that. Amar expected a reaction from his four siblings, but…

When you’re a kid like Gavin Grimm, you know yourself best. And Gavin knew that he was a boy–even if others saw him as a girl. But when his school took away his right to something as simple as using the boy’s restroom, Gavin knew he had a big decision to make.
Because there are always more choices than the ones others give you.
Gavin chose to correct others when they got his pronouns wrong. He asked to be respected. He stood up for himself. Gavin proved that his school had violated his constitutional rights and had the Supreme Court uphold his case–bringing about a historic win for trans rights. There are many kids out there, some just like Gavin Grimm, and they might even be you.
What choices will you make?

For your examples of transandrophobia: the US 7th circuit court just sided in favor of 3 trans high school boys. Their school threw every BS, bigoted argument under the sun at them in order to prevent them from using school restrooms (and push them out of social life altogether most like), and it's simply so vile. They're just kids jfc. But the point is, when you look at the legal record transmasculine ppl are all over the place getting caught in bigoted laws and fighting like hell for trans rights in general (think Gavin Grimm v. Gloucester). Excerpt is taken from Erin In The Mornings substack reporting btw. (CW for transphobia)

Thank you for sending this. It truly is wild how aggressively the school fought this.
Here's the full substack for those interested:

If You’re a Kid Like Gavin: The True Story of a Young Trans Activist - Nonfiction
If You’re a Kid Like Gavin: The True Story of a Young Trans Activist by Gavin Grimm, Kyle Lukoff, J Yang (Illustrator) - (Nonfiction) Published 2022 by Katherine Tegen Books
Tumblr media
This is one of those books that once I had finished reading and set it to the side, I felt like crying. This is one of those books that I wish I had when I was younger to help me feel seen for who I was and am, and to have it be valid and normal and wonderful.
Gavin Grimm is a trans activist who started his journey in activism in high school in 2015, the same year I graduated high school. He released this children’s non-fiction book about seven years later, sharing his experiences and normalizing trans identities for young- and hopefully all age- readers. While Gavin doesn’t share everything with us about his journey in his trans identity, he doesn’t have to, instead he reaches out to the reader in ways that make this aspect of life feel more natural and normal. For many, this can be a heartwarming moment. A place where we are recognized and acknowledged through someone like us generously sharing a fraction of their story. He walks us through coming into his identity, the issues that arose as he more so entered the world, and the actions he took to rally for rights and change. His story is far from over. In the snippet of it he is sharing, he says in his author’s note, “I hope people come away recognizing that we all have important choices to make in our lives- being kind, leading with love, standing up for yourself and others- whereas living our lives as the people we are is not a choice; it's a right. I hope that this story shows kids their own power and what they can do” (Grimm, 2022).
As someone who identifies with transness- identifying as Non-Binary Trans-Masc Queer- it is important that all versions of transness are expressed as they can be and remind others regardless of where they are in their journey that they are real, valid, true. Like I said, I could have used this when I was younger. I applaud Gavin for finding himself so strongly and standing up for what he knows is right. I am his age and still don’t really know who I am but if I had an ounce of his clarity when I was younger I could have saved some heartache, toxicity, and a few tears. I won't go into it but everyone, regardless of queerness or transness, is important and valuable and amazing and stunning. As someone who is queer and wants to push for social justice, diversity, recognition, safety, human rights… I want to be the librarian that shuts down bigotry and ignorance while creating a safe and free environment for the patrons- especially the YA individuals I want to work with, feel seen and heard and safe. I understand that I am repeating myself but I am passionate about this and that’s what happens with me. I think there are a lot of creative ways we can express ourselves in a smaller environment scale; making name tags with preferred/ correct names and pronouns, making zines of our identities, and experiences, hosting a queer club safe space for media discussion and community work. On a slightly larger scale, I can see myself reaching out and collecting resources for people to use and provide opportunities for parades, peaceful protests, celebrations, safe spaces and community gatherings beyond the library, and more.

Chapter 70: Hungover, Heart of Gold, Holy Mess.
“This will not end well for you, grimwalker.” Gavin shrugged. “There is video evidence that –”
“Law witch,” the Bat Queen interrupted. “You demand young man’s mind scrambled to prove client’s point? Is unacceptable!”
Gavin’s expression remained impassive. “Then, as suggested, imprisonment is the only other option my client will accept.”  He sniffed. “That is, of course, unless you’d prefer Mr. Grimm Hammer’s  original demand.”
“And what would that be, exactly?” Luz crossed her arms. Hunter’s sister wore that look. That look of  stubborn determination.
Gavin smiled and gave a casual shrug as he answered.
“Execution.”
(Shout out to @artkittycatty in the end notes for their AMAZING fan art of some of my favorite Sweet Child scenes, both angsty AND sweet.)

Students rally against Virginia’s anti-trans education policies
Students in Virginia rallied outside the state Department of Education’s headquarters Friday to protest anti-trans school policies enacted by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration earlier this year. Around 40 people organized by the student-led Pride Liberation Project held signs and chanted “trans rights are human rights,” and “VDOE, let us be,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. Related: Virginia adopts new policies that force trans students to use the wrong bathrooms & pronouns The state once allowed trans students use bathrooms, pronouns, and play on sports teams matching their gender identities. Not anymore… Recent high school graduate Ranger Balleisen described the effects of the new VDOE policies. “We’re going to be forced back into the closet in schools we thought were safe, we’re going to be forced off of our school sports teams, and forced out of the bathrooms we want to use,” he told the paper. “We will be bullied and dead-named, as is promoted in these policies.” Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you: Subscribe to our Newsletter In July, the VDOE announced new “model policies” for the state’s schools which would force trans and nonbinary students to use bathrooms that align with the sex they were assigned at birth, as well as requiring teachers and other school personnel to refer to students by the name and pronouns that align with the sex they were assigned at birth unless students obtain permission from their parents to use their preferred name and pronouns and banning transgender from competing on sports teams that correspond with their gender identity. A spokesperson for Youngkin, who campaigned on so-called “parental rights,” told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the new guidelines “make it clear that when parents are part of the process, schools will accommodate the requests of children and their families. While people exercise their free speech, these policies state that students should be treated with compassion and schools should be free from bullying and harassment.” The new model policies replace those enacted by the administration of former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D), which allowed students to use school facilities and participate in school programs matching their gender identities and required schools to accommodate trans and nonbinary students’ preferred names and pronouns. Critics of the Youngkin administration’s policies say that they defy federal guidelines issued by President Joe Biden that forbid schools from discriminating against students on the basis of sex. Opponents also cite a federal court ruling in favor of Gavin Grimm, which found that a Virginia high school violated federal nondiscrimination law when it banned Grimm, who is transgender, from using the boys’ bathroom. Under a 2020 Virginia law, the state is required to develop model policies for school districts to adopt. However, the law includes no enforcement mechanism. That has led some left-leaning school districts to reject the new model policies. Last month, a vote on the new policies by the Virginia Beach School Board ended in a 5-5 tie, with one member abstaining. The anti-trans policies were not adopted. As a result, two Virginia Beach parents filed a lawsuit last week attempting to force the school district to adopt the anti-trans policies. According to the AP, the lawsuit states that the plaintiffs “want to protect their children from being compelled to use biologically inaccurate names and pronouns, forced to use bathrooms and locker rooms with members of the opposite sex, or required to pretend during athletic competition that gender identity can override the enduring physical differences between boys and girls.” http://dlvr.it/SwZlL6
