Wings Around the Globe Rally
(In the morning, Marinette’s parents visit her in the hospital. They find her towards the back, with her back facing them. Sabine moves to her side.)
SABINE: Sweetie?
(She closes her eyes.)
MARINETTE: Can you believe it? He hasn’t been straight with me this whole time. At least you were honest. You said I wasn’t made for this. I guess I should have listened to you.
SABINE: Marinette, if you had listened to me, I would never ever forgive myself.
(Sabine moves to face her daughter.)
SABINE: Look, Su-Han may have been wrong for what he did, but he was right about you. You’re not just a simple baker girl. You’re a racer. And now? The whole world knows it.
(She looks at Tom, who smiles encouragingly at his daughter, then back at Sabine.)
MARINETTE: Thanks, Mom. That means a lot. But I’ve gone as far as I can go. I’m busted up. Have you seen my plane?
ALYA (O.S.): Oh, yes, we have.
(Alya and Nino appear at the entrance. Marinette moves to her.)
ALYA: Marinette, we can’t bear the thought of competing without you.
Tumblr media
NINO: Remember when the great Mexican Air Force needed help? American T-33s came. No questions asked. No hesitations. They were just there. Because that is what friends do. After all, you’ve helped us more times than we’ve kept count of. Now we are here to help you.
MARINETTE: We?
CHLOÉ (O.S.): Yep.
(All of Marinette’s friends arrive, donating parts to repair her plane.)
CHLOÉ: Good luck tomorrow, Marinette. I am so proud to compete with you.
SABRINA: You’re a good person, Marinette. Look, here’s a new GPS, in case you ever find yourself lost without a friend to help you through it.
Tumblr media
MARINETTE: Thanks, Sabrina.
MARC: Here’s a flow control valve for you.
JULEKA: How about a starter generator?
MAX: It is 100% an honor to fly beside you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MARINETTE: Thanks, everyone. Really.

SABINE: All right, you guys, let’s get my baby girl ready to race!

Wings Around the Globe Rally
Leg 6
AANG: You are looking live at Melbourne Airport.
(Gabriel eyes the leaderboard. Marinette’s plaque blinks at the top.)
MARINETTE: Yep. First place. Not bad for a baker girl.
(As she leaves, Gabriel adresses Nathalie and Cash.)
GABRIEL: Now, listen up. It’s time to make yourselves useful.

Leg 6: Australia > Antarctica
4,583 km
TOPH (V.O.): This is our sixth and shortest leg. These racers are lucky to have dressed warm, because they’re going to the ice hole of the Earth, Antarctica.
———————————————————————————
(From above, Nathalie and Cash shadow Marinette. With a smirk, Cash dives and swoops in behind Marinette, knocking off her GPS antenna.)
MARINETTE: Ah! (GASPS)
Tumblr media
MARINETTE: My antenna!
(The antenna falls into the ocean and sinks.)
Tumblr media
MARINETTE: No. No, no, no! What am I gonna do?!
(Marinette circles the splash and flies off-course.)
Tumblr media
MARINETTE: (message breaking) Hawaii, are you there? Do you read? I am low on fuel.
(An alarm goes off. Marinette sees her flashing fuel gauge, which nears empty.)
MARINETTE: Oh, no! Oh, boy.
Tumblr media
(She looks around for a sign of dry land. Nothing but the vast ocean as far as the eye can see. Suddenly, a jet appears behind her.)
MARINETTE: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
ALPHA: Unknown rider, unknown rider. You have entered restricted airspace. Why haven’t you responded to radio contact?
MARINETTE: Somebody cut off my antenna.
ALPHA: Identify yourself.
MARINETTE: I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
ALPHA: Roger that. Bogey has been identified as Dupain-Cheng Seven.
MARINETTE: I’m running on vapours. I need to land.
(Another jet arrives.)
BETA: What are you doing out here with an empty tank?
MARINETTE: Well, I thought I’d refuel in Hawaii, but...
ALPHA: Hawaii is 375 miles southwest of here.
MARINETTE: What?
BETA: Listen, Dupain-Cheng. You’d better follow us to the boat. No bingo fields around here.
MARINETTE: “Bingo fields?”
BETA: Places to land.
MARINETTE: “The boat?”
ALPHA: The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
(Marinette and the jet pilots arrive at the ship.)
ALPHA: Alpha, checking in as frag plus one. Check.
EISENHOWER COMMANDER: Two. Go ahead, Alpha.
ALPHA: Bogey is civilian and needs emergency fuel.
EISENHOWER COMMANDER: Copy that. We’ll rig the barricade for the civilian.
ALPHA: (to Marinette) Let’s line you up for the barricade. All you have to do is throttle on back and call the ball, and hopefully end up in the spaghetti.
MARINETTE: What? Wait, no, wait! Wait a second! Um, uh, guys, I’m not sure I can do this.
BETA: I don’t see how you have a choice.
MARINETTE: Okay. But that runway is moving.
BETA: We’ll set you up on the glide path.
MARINETTE: Runways are not supposed to move. Okay. I’m okay. I’m going to be fine.
ALPHA: Take it easy.
MARINETTE: Moving runway, moving runway. There it is. Here we go.
ALPHA: Throttle on back.
MARINETTE: Maybe if I just came around again.
ALPHA: Level your wings.
BETA: Easy with it.
(Marinette comes in too fast. She heads straight for a net they had set up. Her rear wheel makes contact with the arresting wire, which stretches like a sling shot and it immediately stops her before she hits the barrier.)
Tumblr media
(The flight crew cheers as Marinette looks around at them and smiles.)
SERGEANT: We’ve got you, Dupain-Cheng.
(She is escorted below deck.)
ALPHA: Come on, let’s get you fixed up, refuelled and back in the race. You are way behind.
MARINETTE: Thanks. You saved me out there.

(After getting her plane fixed and taking off from the Eisenhower, Marinette tries to navigate through pouring rain from a major thunderstorm and the monstrous swell of waves on the Southern Ocean. Her wheel hits the surface and sends her spiraling put of control. She tries to climb a giant breaker and barrels through the crest, but suffers engine failure.)
MARINETTE: Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! I’m going down! 18 degrees north, six minutes, 119…!
Tumblr media
(She hurdles into the ocean, but forces herself back up. The waves continue to thrash and force her underwater, but each time, she fights her way to the surface. Her plane battered and bruised, she eventually sinks to the bottom.)
Tumblr media
(Later, rescue staff dives into the water with a net and airlifts Marinette to Antarctica, dropping her off on McMurdo Station’s runway surrounded by her family and friends.)

(The racers continue on to Japan through the Himalayas. They start to climb over the jagged peaks of the mountain range, that are covered in a blanket of snow and wind.)
Leg 4: South Africa > Japan
14,735 km
AANG (V.O.): Every racer’s nightmare is scaling the Himalayas. Our longest leg yet, and a treacherous one at that.
Tumblr media
(Marinette follows the railroad track through the winding valleys of the mountains.)
Tumblr media
(She squints against the snow when she suddenly comes across a tunnel.)
Tumblr media
(She tries to climb over the mountain, but loses her courage the higher she goes until she gives up and turns around.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MARINETTE: No.
(Marinette loops around and heads back toward the tunnel. Her eyes narrow in determination as she enters the confined space. Inside, she turns her wingspan diagonal. Sparks begin to fly as she scrapes her wing tips and tail against the walls of the dark passageways.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(She hears the sound of a train whistle from the other end of the tunnel.)
MARINETTE: Whoa!
(As she accelerates, the train conductor sees her in the tunnel approaching ahead. He applies the brakes, sparks coming off the train’s wheels. As Marinette closes in, she and the conductor both close their eyes tightly, bracing for impact.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Everything goes white for a moment, then Marinette finds herself encompassed in soft pale clouds. She effortlessly glides forward, brows furrowed. As the clouds break, a mountaintop lush with green vegetation and waterfalls appears. Marinette slowly descends and lands on a runway leading to a large white pagoda with brown rooftops.)
MARINETTE: Uh... (echoing) Hello?
(As she comes to a stop at the foot of the building, she looks up to find three geisha women.)

Tumblr media
ZUKO (V.O.): But the real story here, Toph, is Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Tumblr media
TOPH (V.O.): Absolutely.
SUKI (V.O): She’s passing one flier after another.
SOKKA (V.O.): That’s right. She was raised by bakers, and certainly isn’t powdering this competition.

Tumblr media
AANG (V.O.): What’s next, Katara?
KATARA (V.O.): This could be Dupain-Cheng’s leg, all the way. The racers have to fly under a hard ceiling of 1,000 feet, stay under the clouds and in the hills.

AANG (V.O.): Race fans, it’s that time of year again. Welcome to the Wings Around the Globe.
AANG (CONT’D): I’m Avatar Aang, here with the rest of Team Avatar, Katara, Sokka, Toph Beifong, Fire Lord Zuko, and Kyoshi Warrior Suki, and this is the flagship event of the world’s fastest sport where only the best of the best compete.
KATARA (V.O.): Each leg brings a new challenge, testing agility, navigation, and endurance. But when it’s all said and done, speed is the name of the game.
SOKKA (V.O.): The racers are making their way to the runway now. Twenty-seven contestants have been selected. Folks, a step onto this field is a step into history.
Starting line: JFK Airport in Queens, New York

AANG (V.O.): Seven legs. Over 31,000 kilometers. The world’s highest mountains and deepest oceans all stand before them, just waiting to be conquered by the right competitor.
Tumblr media
(All of the racers are ready to start. Now they’re just waiting for the starting signal.)
ZUKO (V.O.): All the predictions, all the pageantry, all the preparation, it all comes down to this moment. One of these racers is about to fly off into the pages of sports history and become a champion.
Tumblr media
(The starting signal is a green flag held by Majestia, which she raises.)
MAJESTIA: (OVER MIC) Go!
(At the drop of the flag, the racers roar forward.)
Tumblr media
TOPH (V.O.): And we are under way!
(The crowd roars as the racers take off. One-by-one, they climb into the air, over the ocean, and raise their landing gear. As they start to spread out, Gabriel takes an early lead, followed closely by Nathalie and Cash. Marinette trails the group, but is caught in the current of the other racers.)

@stormage-writes Besides, between Torchwick, Khan, Fennec, Vernal, Leo, Tock, Adam, Clover, the Hound, Jacques, Watts, Ironwood, and the Curious Cat, since when has the death of a villain, no matter how rotten to the core they were, been portrayed by the narrative as this ceremonious, champagne-popping achievement that was the “right” option to make?
Torchwick’s death is semi-portrayed as a sympathetically sad thing for Neo
Khan’s death has Hazel, a reasonable antagonist (when he’s not beating up Oscar), reprimanding Adam for the coup
Fennec’s death is the least sympathetic of the lineup, but no one feels happy about it
Vernal’s death is already sad enough and is played as such as Raven closes her eyes with nothing satisfying about it, but it’s even more sad in hindsight now that we know about Raven’s turnaround that was hinted at in Volume 5 and will be starting in Volume 10
Leo’s death leaves us with a bit of pity for him watching him beg for Salem to spare his life
Tock’s death only leaves shock rather than satisfaction
Adam’s death has Blake collapsing in tears that she had to stoop to murdering him to get rid of him
Clover’s death leaves Qrow and the Ace-Ops grieving for all of Volume 8
The Hound’s death has Ruby feel bad that it was a silver-eyed person turned into a Grimm
Jacques’ death certainly doesn’t have Ironwood celebrating
Watts and Ironwood’s deaths have no happy music over them
The Cat’s death has Team RWBY outright horrified watching them get ripped apart and eaten alive

What was that forehead touch about then?"
