#Fifth Ideal Radiants

Text
I think it’s interesting that the Skybreakers are the only order of Radiant that we know all five Ideals for. It seems like most, if not all of the other orders have to discover things as they go, but the Skybreakers have it mostly worked out, with *some* room for individual choice
The First Ideal for Skybreakers is the generic “Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.” They call it the Ideal of Radiance
The Second Ideal is the Ideal of Justice. In Szeth’s words, it’s “I swear to seek justice, to let it guide me, until I find a more perfect Ideal.”
The Third Ideal is the Ideal of Law. This is the one Skybreakers have to follow until and unless they swear the Fifth Ideal. I’m not sure what happens if the thing a Skybreaker chooses as their Third Ideal fails before they swear the Fifth, but something Szeth says in RoW makes me think that they’d have to find something else to follow so their Nahel bond isn’t broken. Then again, Szeth’s interpretation might not be accurate, especially since he holds so strongly to rules/codes/Ideals he’s latched onto. Either way, the Skybreaker Third Ideal according to Szeth is “I swear to follow the will of Dalinar Kholin. This is my oath.” We see him grapple with that more in his RoW interlude
The Skybreaker Fourth Ideal is the Ideal of Crusade. This is where they pick a larger goal to attain, and they can only accomplish it if their spren is satisfied. For Szeth, the Fourth Ideal is “I will cleanse the Shin of their false leaders, so long as Dalinar Kholin agrees.”
Again, this is where Skybreakers are different than other Radiants we’ve seen so far. For example, Windrunners don’t know the gist of their Fourth Ideal until they’re forced against it, if Kaladin is a fairly accurate example. Skybreakers know the *idea* of what their Fourth Ideal will be, even if the *details* take form over time. I also think it’s super interesting that they can state what their Fourth Ideal will be in advance, even if it takes months, years, or even decades to accomplish whatever goal they set for themselves. In OB chapter 90, a Skybreaker Master says that they were at the Third Ideal for two decades before attaining the Fourth.
And the Fifth Ideal for the Skybreakers is the Ideal of Law. This is where the Skybreaker becomes law and Truth. Nale is the only example we have in modern times of a Skybreaker who has sworn that Ideal, and his situation is complicated, since he’s a Herald. Even in OB chapter 90, though, a Skybreaker master says that it’s been centuries since a member of their order reached the Fifth Ideal. I don’t know if Nale was the last, or if there have been a few since he reached the Fifth Ideal.
Szeth hasn’t sworn the Fifth Ideal as a Skybreaker. I theorize that he will swear it at some point, partially because it fits so well with a previous headcanon of mine. I also think it’d be super meaningful/impactful for Szeth to swear an Ideal that allows him to make his own decisions/enforce his own will. In OB chapter 106, Nale tells Szeth that he’s the first in a new order of Skybreakers. There has to be some kind of significance to that, but we don’t have all the pieces yet. Nale didn’t prevent Szeth from joining Dalinar and the Coalition after the Battle of Thaylen Field, and I wonder if that was intentional.
If one Radiant swears the Fifth Ideal in KoWT, it *might* be Szeth. I do want him to reach that point eventually, but I also worry that it could feel rushed in KoWT, especially since he said the first Three Ideals so quickly (he said the first two Ideals on the same day, and the Third like a month later lol)
I think I got off track from my original point. This post definitely ended up being longer than I thought it would.
Tl,dr. Skybreakers are unique as far as I can tell/remember, and the fact that their Ideals are broadly laid out ahead of time makes for some interesting possibilities. And I also included Szethposting, because of course I did

Tumblr media
career [ kuh-reer ] noun an occupation or profession, especially one requiring special training, followed as one's lifework: a person's progress or general course of action through life or through a phase of life, as in some profession or undertaking
We have several details to talk about how astrology can help us find our ideal profession and we use what we have in our power to strengthen ourselves and self-knowledge.
Tumblr media
Planets
Career as we saw earlier is not just work and your job, it encompasses many things in your life as it is something that takes many years, so all planets show something related to your career.
Sun: The radiant center of our being, revealing our mission, identity, and values. It guides us towards the areas where we seek recognition and how we can contribute to society.
Moon: Reflecting our emotional desires and commitments, the Moon unveils our preferences for a comfortable and nurturing work environment.
Mercury: The realm of analytical skills and communication, Mercury highlights areas where our rational thinking aids and supports us, making tasks easier and efficient.
Venus: Governing our ability to forge relationships and be adored, Venus unveils our potential to sell products or ideas, how others perceive us, and how we can add value.
Mars: The driving force behind our desires and motivations, Mars indicates where we can find energy, passion, and determination to propel us forward.
Ascendant: The extra personal talent, exclusive to each individual, offers a distinct insight into your inherent abilities and potential.
Tumblr media
Elements and Modalities
It can be used for each planet (it won't be so detailed, if you want me to talk about each one, like or reblog to show that you are interested in the subject...), but it is used to see the dominant modality and element in the natal chart.
Earth: Seeking security and practicality, Earth signs are adept at managing and structuring tasks, valuing their products and presenting their true worth.
Water: Emotionally driven, Water signs thrive in environments that foster connection and love, often leading to careers where care and bonding are vital.
Air: Driven by intellectual pursuits and interaction with people, Air signs flourish in professions that require intelligence and daily engagement of their diverse skills.
Fire: The passion and drive of Fire signs lead them towards pioneering roles and highly recognized positions, necessitating dynamic and energetic environments.
Cardinal: Initiators and independent spirits, Cardinal signs embrace challenges and take the lead in manifesting their intentions.
Fixed: Penchant for control and security, Fixed signs passionately pursue their interests and maintain unwavering dedication.
Mutable: Embracing change and creativity, Mutable signs excel in professions that allow flexibility and unconventional approaches.
Now... I know that you want career paths you can work on, but I first showed you how you can understand what are your needs and strengths before giving professions because I think it's more important for you to know your needs than to think "wow, look, my natal chart tells me to be a doctor, I think I'll drop everything to do medicine"
Tumblr media
How to know if you do well in this career??
1º Way: Identify the ruling planets of the earth houses: 2nd (work and money), 6th (job and routine), and 10th (career) house. Then, determine which house the ruling planet of this house is in. Next, refer to the list below and check if there's a career you like associated with that house. For example, my 2nd ruling planet is in Taurus, and my Venus is in the 5th. Therefore, I'll explore professions related to LEO/FIFTH HOUSE.
2º Way: Identify the career sign you are most interested in. Find the ruling planet of that sign and see if it corresponds to the 2nd,6th or 10th in your birth chart. For instance, I'm interested in reading tarot cards, so I'll check the position of my Pluto (ruler of the 8th). As it's in my 10th, tarot card reading could be a good career choice for me.
3º Way: Identify the planets that fall in your 2nd, 6th and 10th houses and see directly the professions it represents, knowing that in terms of CAREER, the 10th house is more important. So if I have no planets in the 2nd, Venus in the 6th and none in the 10th, I see the carrers that are represented by Venus.

Julia's Special Note
I enjoy helping people, so let me share a unique insight that you won't find anywhere else. Jupiter and Saturn play significant roles in determining our value in both personal and societal contexts. Jupiter represents the value that society places on us, while Saturn signifies the value we place on ourselves in relation to society. In short, these two planets can reveal insights into your salary and financial gains in your profession. The key aspect here is their conjunction. For many years, Jupiter and Saturn have been meeting in earth signs, indicating a strong emphasis on material values, productivity, and tangible outcomes. This means that society has highly valued material success, productivity, and practical skills. However, over the next 200 years, they will conjoin in air signs, signaling a shift in societal values. The focus will move towards knowledge, expertise, teaching abilities, effective communication, and the dissemination of information. In this new era, what garners a good salary today may no longer hold the same value in 200 years. Thus, it won't matter so much what profession you have, but rather, the greatest differentiating factor for achieving good financial gains will be how much you know and specialize in your chosen field, rather than just how much you produce.

Random Predictions for Stormlight 5
[Spoilers for Stormlight Archive generally, including major spoilers for Rhythm of War!]
I’m trying as hard as possible to make a fool of myself before Stormlight 5 comes out, doing things like trying to predict Dalinar’s champion, to predict the outcome of that fight, to predict what Kaladin’s fate will be... But I’m not done. Here are just some things that I personally think might happen. Let’s all enjoy seeing how wrong I am!
1. Shallan will get pregnant.
Shallan and Adolin just got married, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re pregnant in the next book. I’m not sure if this will be a plot-point, or if Shallan will just be conveniently pregnant at the end to set up for a Shadolin baby post time-skip. Sanderson has not really seemed interested in writing pregnancies--Steris had her kids in between books, and Siri’s pregnancy ended up being fake--so I assume this will just be a throwaway near the end. But if Shallan IS pregnant in the series, I’d be interested to see how being a Radiant affects that, whether Shallan has a pregnancy personality, etc.
2. Rlain & Renarin will get together (off-screen).
I believe we’ve been promised more queer characters in Stormlight 5, including Rlain and Renarin canonically. That doesn’t mean they’ll actually get together, but I am honestly expecting them to. But in order to manage my expectations, I’m kinda expecting this to all happen off-screen--like they’ll tell Kaladin they’re together and he’ll be like “Huh” and that will be the extent of it. I’d like more, but...I dunno!
3. Kaladin will swear the Fifth Ideal.
Does this even count as a prediction? I mean, I will be shocked if this does NOT happen...unless I guess it’s being saved for later in the series? But Kaladin is 4 oaths in after 4 books, so if the past is any prediction...
4. Szeth will swear the Fifth Ideal.
Szeth is the focus character for Stormlight 5, and he and Nale already talked about the Stormbreaker 5th ideal, where apparently you become the law. It’s terrifying to think of Szeth I-followed-a-rock-and-then-a-random-guy-who-seemed-cool Stormbreaker being his own law, but...it would be Growth. And he is going to Shinover specifically to finish his fourth ideal. So it does seem like him reaching the fifth is highly likely.
5. Adolin will heal Maya and become an Edgedancer
@arcanistsdelight says this better than I ever could in this post. And I agree! I understand the theories about Adolin becoming a villain or antagonist, but I still have my hopes set on him figuring out how to heal a Deadeye and then bonding with Maya as an Edgedancer.
6. We’ll find out why the Knights Radiants broke their oath...and it’ll be bad.
I am not smart enough to guess as to what horrible reason the Radiants had to break their oaths during the Recreance, but I fully expect to learn the truth in Stormlight 5. Possibly from a healed-up Maya?
7. A kandra will show up.
The Lost Metal really opened the floodgates on world hoppers--and MeLaan revealed that she was being sent off-world. I would not be at all surprised if a kandra character appeared in Stormlight 5, maybe even MeLaan herself.
8. Someone will Bond the Nightwatcher
We have 2/3 Bondsmiths so far--Dalinar with the Stormfather and Navani with the Sibling. The only Bondsmith bond left would be with the Nigthwatcher. The only issue is that most characters have a bond these days--there’s Adolin, but I’m still holding out for him to bond Maya (although what a Kholin monopoly it would be if Adolin bonded the Nightwatcher!). There are the Listeners--Lewshi maybe? I’d definitely be up for a Lewshi Radiant arc.
As tradition--let’s put it to a vote!

Alright, I'm getting my big Stormlight 5 predictions down now.
Contest of champions
Dalinar (Honor) vs. Renarin (Odium) fakeout. The actual contest will be Adolin (Honor) vs. Taln (Odium). I don't know who's gonna win but honestly I don't think it's gonna matter, there's definitely going to be some kind of crazy twist that changes everything.
Radiant Oaths
4th Bondsmith ideal will be something about letting go of power. Dalinar will fail to swear it at a crucial moment and die.
An Enlightened Truthwatcher ideal will be something like "I will not hide the truth of who I am, I will not make myself small to please others" and it's going to be about Glys living outside Renarin's chest.
5th Windrunner ideal will be "I will protect myself" and Kaladin is gonna swear it and I'm gonna cry like a baby.
4th ideal Szeth pls and thank you.
Character deaths
Dalinar (we all know it), Moash (I'm sorry everyone I don't want him to die I just think he's gonna). If Adolin and Kaladin don't live through this one I will eat my socks.
Misc. other stuff
-The Stormfather's next Bondsmith is going to be a singer but I don't think that will necessarily happen in book 5.
-Adolin and Maya do a reverse Radiant bond. Adolin and Shallan move to Shadesmar, setting the stage for worldhopper Shallan in later books. Renarin becomes Kholin highprince. (This is what the "he must pick it up, the fallen title" death rattle is predicting.)
-I flip-flop between two death rattles for Kaladin's fifth ideal ("I stand over the body of a brother", "He has won. Oh, he has beaten us") but right now I'm feeling like it's the first one.
-Renarin and Rlain are going to start researching fabrials that don't trap spren, based off of the Listener method for growing crops

Dalinar's power
Jurble: One I think might border even further on RAFO - in RoW, Dalinar accepts Kaladin's Fourth Ideal. I'm wondering, is it possible for Dalinar to... power-level a Radiant up to the Fifth Ideal by just accepting all their Oaths without regards to, you know, underlying fitness? Danger and safety issues aside. The Stormfather's comments on Ishar's powers being beyond the scope of what Honor allowed makes me assume he can.
Brandon Sanderson: RAFO, as you expected. But without Honor around, some of the things he could do are kind of up for grabs.

Combat Charms - Most Situational
Tumblr media
When it comes to challenges, it is common for players to change their strategies and use charms they otherwise would ignore. Hiveblood and Defender’s Crest far outshine the other charms, tying with 50 votes, which is over a fifth of all respondents. The reasons behind these results are likely different for each charm. We suspect that Hiveblood is a good way to save on soul to heal, allowing the passive effect of the charm to regenerate their lost masks. This can be useful for bosses that deal double damage, as that forces players to use double the soul to heal back up. In particular, Traitor Lord may encourage players to use Hiveblood more due to the platforming gauntlet before his arena on top of the double damage his attacks deal.
On the other hand, Defender’s Crest is exceptionally useful for Broken Vessel and Lost Kin, as the putrid aura protects the player from Infected Balloons as they’re healing. And, since both Defender’s Crest and Glowing Womb make the top five, it’s likely that some players are choosing to use the synergy between the two charms to cheese certain bosses they don’t want to fight. Defender’s Crest causes explosive hatchlings to spawn when Glowing Womb is equipped, giving them a damage boost when they attack an enemy. Considering you’re able to perch in the top corners of some arenas and wait for the minions to kill the boss for you, like in Failed Champion’s overworld arena, this could explain why these two charms are highly situational.
Additionally, most of these charms may have applications in the Colosseum of Fools. When swarmed by enemies, Defender’s Crest can provide passive damage while the player fights to get out of the throng, and the hatchlings stack damage on top of that. Hiveblood is ideal for healing without soul while simply dodging enemies, and Unbreakable Heart by default increases survivability. Some players may simply choose to equip Unbreakable Heart for a single boss they find particularly difficult as well, like double damage bosses.
Unbreakable Heart may also find use in Godhome, whether in challenging the Hall of Gods or the pantheons, particularly for the shell binding. Since the shell binding does not affect the masks granted by Unbreakable Heart, it’s an easy way to make the shell binding less difficult. Unbreakable Heart also gives an extra hit of damage when fighting ascended bosses, and of course also on attuned bosses that are more difficult.
And finally, Grubberfly’s Elegy has clear applications in radiant Hall of Gods, since the player is always at full masks when attempting radiant bosses. The long range of the beams from Grubberfly’s Elegy can also make certain bosses less challenging, like Markoth on his ascended arena, since the beams pass through his shields. It can also simply be gratifying to defeat a boss with the beams from Grubberfly’s Elegy, since bosses still take knockback from them; Massive Moss Charger lets you stand still and simply spam beams repeatedly until it dies.
More to come soon!

Terms Glossary
Aelphiem - The original race made by the gods to inhabit Hiun before mankind. Much like men, their body plan was based on daemons. However, they quickly fell and turned against the gods. Notable for their single eye, tusks, and translucent skin. They would eventually evolve to become more aquatic.
Aerunao - The proper academic term for mana. An ancient word meaning "aetherial clay," and "spiritual blood." Aerunao is sometimes also referred to as the quintessence or fifth element. It's an in-between state of matter that can be used to manipulate, reshape, energize or replicate other states of matter, elements, chemicals, or particles.
Aether - An alchemical element used primarily by gods and their aetherials that consists of a mixture of wind, radiant fire, lightning, and monad. Causes chain reactions within physical matter that continuously rips it apart and disintegrates it until nothing is left, exorcizing any Soul that may be held within.
Aetherial - Beings created by gods for various purposes, usually to maintain some semblance of order within Samsara.
Alchemical Element - An element that does not occur naturally and must be made through magick.
Angel - An aetherial made specifically to hunt and kill daemons. They exist as a small condensed orb of prima materia surrounded by halos. They can reshape the prima materia to give themselves a body or create weapons that can retake Souls from daemons.
Anima Mundi - The Soul of the Taioi of a planet that comes into existence through absorption of the remnants of the Ba that stays with corpses after death. Through coagulation of these remnants the planet generates its own consciousness that acts as an extension of the will of those who have lived and died on the planet.
ARCHETYPE - The immanent, transcendent, non-dualistic, infinite source of Souls without end or beginning that has always and never will be; infinite in all attributes, beyond all forms and ideals. There is no equal. The aleph ein sof. The unmoved mover. The master of all, yet owner of none. Existing as everything and nothing within and outside of reality and imagination alike. Undivided and multiple. Personal and unknowable. Fully understood and completely incomprehensible.
Ascension - The temporary awakening of the Soul during times of great stress or revelation.
Awakening - The Soul gains awareness of itself, harmonizing certain aspects of the Soul with the universe.
Collective Unconscious - The connective essence that relates all Souls. When prayers are answered it is the collective unconscious that responds; acting only in truth, devoid of any action of false idols.
Daemon - A being of pure prima materia created unconsciously by the Demiurge that seeks out any and all living things to erase them from existence by absorbing their Souls and growing in power. Their own Soul is their body, and their body is their Soul.
Demiurge - The body of the universe that encapsulates cosmos inside it. It itself becomes conscious overtime through universal spiritual fission. As Souls migrate into it from somewhere outside of the universe; it begins to create antibodies to fight them off, known as daemons to return to its natural entropic state of nothingness.
Eden - An enormous disc shaped planet that seems to disobey the laws of physics, roughly the size of an entire solar system. One of the earliest planets forcefully created by the gods as a testing ground for species they wanted to put out into the universe.
Falling - The act of a Soul becoming consumed by the dark, and turning into a hylic. This occurs when one becomes too obsessed with the material self and begins to reject the universe outside of themselves, often leading to them refusing ideas outside of their own; justifying any action they take as virtuous no matter how vile.
Gods/Idols - Light beings that helped bring about the current state of the universe. They reside within their own realm where the prima materia that permeates the rest of the universe can't eat away at them.
Hardlight - An alchemical element that binds and balances both light and dark together to give light tangible mass and energize the dark. This is used to bypass most mundane or magickal barriers that aren't itself made of hardlight. Referred to as "katioli" in prehistory.
Hiun - The primary earthlike planet where humans, elves, dwarves, orks, fenn, mermen, and saurian originate, sometimes simply all referred to as mankind or Hians. But the planet itself goes by many names from their many different cultures such as Miterra, M'terha, and Caosg.
Hylic - A being that has become reminiscent of a daemon. As their Soul becomes subservient to their body, they merge together reshaping the body to represent the deepest desires of the Soul.
Orenda - Aerunao that originates outside of the body within inanimate objects in nature such as water, wind, and plant life.
Mage - Someone who practices magick without using technology to aid them.
Magick - The manipulation of aerunao through various means, usually either by a mage, or via technology.
Mana - Aerunao that originates within the body. Colloquially used by many to refer to all forms of aerunao.
Mana Core - An alchemical creation consisting of prima matieria sealed within a teardrop of verisite of varying sizes. Made as a power source or a way to give soulless constructions the ability to utilize mana, although usually only in its most elementary state. The prima materia draws in and captures residual mana that exists within the atmosphere, and the verisite purifies it as it is used.
Monad - The smallest particles throughout existence that permeate all aspects of reality. When honed it can do multiple miraculous things such as bypassing space, forming impenetrable barriers, creating wormholes, and slowing, stopping, or speeding up time. Damage caused by them, whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual cannot be restored with magick, and must occur naturally. The only thing that can compete with monad is more monad. Their use is referred to as draconics, or monadmancy.
Origin Sea - The galaxy where Hiun originates, along with countless other planets and sapient species.
Pneumatic - A being that has awoken a portion of their Soul.
Prana - Aerunao that originates from space. Most of the time, it must be cleansed from the excess of prima materia that clings to it, otherwise it will corrupt things it comes into contact with, causing them to fall.
Prima Materia - Raw physical essence, sometimes referred to as dark. It exists as the void of space, and was used in the creation of planets by the gods to act as their core. It also acts as the body for the Demiurge and daemons. Its density is such that it emits its own gravitational pull, drawing in and trapping even immaterial things such as aerunao and Souls.
Psychic - A being, usually a mage, that has discovered the truth of the Soul's existence and is capable of manipulating it.
Soul - A spark of infinity that resides within all living things. Made up of light, dark, aerunao, and monad in equal parts, it exists as a microcosm of reality and has unbound potential for growth, change, understanding, and beauty. The Soul is often divided into the trinity of trinities, the first being the body, the mind, and the spirit. The body is what animates, the mind giving higher thought, and the spirit giving deep emotion. The second being the Ba, Ka, and Sah. Ba being the portion of the Soul that remains clinging to their vessel after death, Ka being the portion that leaves the vessel after death, and Sah being the core of the Soul, or Higher Self, that exists beyond time and space. The third being ego, collective unconscious, and the ARCHETYPE. The ego residually exists with the individual, the collective unconscious residually existing between individuals, and the ARCHETYPE residually existing throughout everything.
Spacial Extremophile - Enormous creatures that live in space, although their offspring often incubate on or around planets and mature until they can survive the stars. Because of their size, it's extremely dangerous to have their children incubate on planets as they could turn into living natural disasters. Their origins are unknown.
Taioi - Enormous structures of nature that typically reach into the cores of planets which are created by the gods. They act as aerunao receivers, pulling in aerunao from space, purifying it, and spreading it across the planet to fertilize it, jump-starting evolution.
True Name - The "name" of one's Soul. When Souls enter the universe they echo out unique undetectable frequencies, thus giving them a "name." If this frequency is repeated, the Soul is brought back to its birth and remembers itself as an infinite aspect of reality, uplifting it and causing it to ascend. If the frequency is heard in reverse it will cause the Soul to temporarily shut down.
Verisite - Crystals formed from concentrated aerunao, usually by a Taioi. Versitie is able to refract light better than any other known material in the universe. It is typically used in the creation of items to ward off or slay daemons.
Qi - Aerunao that originates from the Soul.
Waking Realm - The realm of change and cycles where light and dark mingle together to subjugate or annihilate Souls. This is where all planets, stars, and evolved life coincide, created by the gods to act as distraction for daemons to keep themselves safe.

Whether each Stormlight character will die in book 5 (yes, this is just me trying to justify everyone surviving):
Kaladin: okay this is the one i'm the most opinionated on. kaladin's entire arc has been about him surviving impossible odds, and learning to live with the guilt of surviving where others did not. he's also reached the point of attempted suicide on multiple occasions. a heroic sacrifice wouldn't positively impact kaladin's character in any way, and his story has more of an impact if he lives. honestly after rhythm of war i think he's headed in this direction, but the theme of kaladin being expected to survive no matter what (see the chasm incident in wor and the occupation in row) is worrying from a narrative perspective. i'm not expecting kaladin to be a focal character in the back five, but he deserves - and needs - to live. not just survive, but actually live.
Shallan: shallan has huge worldhopper potential. with the ghostbloods being a worldhopper organisation, her power set linking to shadesmar, and her relationship with hoid, it makes sense for her story to take her off roshar. also, she needs to confront kelsier. ultimately, there isn't going to be enough time for worldhopping in book 5 (nor is it currently possible for a radiant to leave roshar), so shallan should survive the book.
Adolin: adolin dying is plausible (since he wasn't intended to be a pov character and initially died early on in the series, isn't a radiant and is the emotional support character for half of the cast) and i hate it. he's the best and i want him to be happy. please let adolin fix the deadeye issue and bond maya fully. i don't even need him to be a radiant but i do need him to live.
Renarin: too much back five potential. we already know he's a main pov character and the flashback character for book 7, so i think he's relatively safe. yes, brandon has said that being a flashback character does not guarantee survival, but renarin dying is unlikely to work for this (it's more likely to be someone like taln - if anyone - that has flashbacks despite being dead, as there's enough content to work from without needing to be present in the current story). plus there's a slow burn with him and rlain that needs to play out, so he's likely to survive.
Jasnah: as with renarin, jasnah is a main pov for the back half of stormlight. she's too powerful (as a radiant and as queen) and we haven't seen enough of her to kill her off at this point.
Heralds: ishar might die? taln and ash will probably survive but it’s not guaranteed. nale and kelek could go either way, although they’re both linked to important groups on roshar so they are likely to make it. we haven’t seen most of the rest so who knows what’ll happen to them. alternatively, all the heralds could die, but that’s more likely to happen in the back five than in the next book.
Szeth: i could see szeth dying. i could also see szeth surviving and swearing the fifth ideal later in the series, enabling him to progress past the need to swear himself to an external entity (i think kaladin will be the first to reach the fifth, and szeth is only at the third, so i don't think this can happen too soon). either way he probably won't be a main character in the back half.
Bridge Four: see i think a few bridge four members will die in this one. i'm hoping sigzil won't because i want to see him interact with hoid. who knows what's going on with rock. dabbid is in danger since he had character development in row but ultimately isn't that important to the plot. rlain will make it. at least one of skar, drehy, leyten and lopen is in danger. lyn will probably be fine. we’ll definitely see a few newer/unknown members die like we did with minor character bridgemen in the way of kings.
Spren: after rhythm of war i think it’s likely that we’ll see more spren die. i don’t think syl will die provided kaladin is still alive. pattern or testament could die, depending on what happens to the deadeyes in general, but not both. maya is safe. the bondsmith spren are also safe. spren of main characters in the back five should also be okay (glys, wyndle, ivory). i’m actually worried about design since we saw hoid in mistborn era 2, but it’s equally likely that he figured out how to solve the travel issue without losing his bond.
Moash: moash is an interesting one since i have no idea where his character is going after row. if he's headed down the redemption arc route, he'll live. if not then his survival could go either way.
Venli: i'm not sure about venli. honestly it seems like she won't really be a focal point after row, but who knows.
Navani: navani is new to being a radiant, and there's too much set up with the tower and the ethics of fabrials for her to die in book 5. she's also a bondsmith, meaning that the radiants will still have one if something happens to dalinar.
Dalinar: yeah there's no way dalinar is making it out of this book. he might die, he might ascend to a shard (but i'm hoping this won't happen at all), he might become a fused. whatever happens, he's not going to be around after book 5.

I’m wondering about the Heralds’ relationship with their associated Radiant orders. Like obviously Nale has had a lot of influence over the Skybreakers. He’s the Herald of that order, a Skybreaker himself, and the only living one who has sworn the Fifth Ideal. Modern Skybreakers are the way they are largely because of Nale’s direction and enforcement of the order’s structure and methods.
But what about the other Heralds? Have any of them been involved with the Radiants at all, or do they try to forget? Does it depend on the Herald?
I don’t know if Jezrien was aware enough to be involved with the Windrunners before Moash killed him. We know pretty much nothing about Chanah and Vedel. I wonder what they think about modern Dustbringers and Edgedancers. Same with Pailiah and the Truthwatchers. I kind of think Ash would have absolutely no interest in being associated with the Lightweavers, and would actively try to distance herself as much as human(ish)ly possible. Batah and the Elsecallers??? Kalak is another one who I think would try to avoid any reminders of the past. Taln has been locked on Braize for 4500 years, and is now in no shape to be involved with the Stonewards. And we’ve seen how Ishar treats Dalinar.
I just think there’s a lot of potential to see how Heralds who aren’t Nale might have guided their Radiants at various points over time

I have a feeling that this could count as Adolin swearing an Ideal .. and speaking of which..
Ok, I know it was a far fetched theory of the 17th shard , but I still love it❤️
It was that Adolin already swore his ideals, but because Maya is a deadeye it didn’t give him surges, and that the moment she wakes up, He will shoot straight up to fourth or even fifth Ideal Radiant
And from that I want to form , not a theory really, but a “How wonderful would it be “fiction.
He haven’t sworn them yet, but already lives by them… he didn’t say the first Ideal … or at least here he said one third of it. And when he does, Maya will wake up.
And then all the words will come to him at once, but he already lives them. He remembers and listens and helps and heals ( mentally) people.

Kaladin's Next Steps
i posted this on the 17th shard, but i thought the tumblr side of the cosmere fandom might have a lot to say about this, so have fun
(1700 word behemoth of a post under the cut lol)
Kaladin has basically been the protagonist of the entire first arc. That said, it’s improbable that he’ll have as much of the spotlight in the second arc as well. I’m going to do my best to explain my theories for all of the viable paths I see moving forward...
Option 1: Swearing the Fifth Ideal in Book 5
In Book 5, Kaladin swears the Fifth Ideal, which is great! Good for him. He's living his Main Character Moment™, his development is probably wrapping up, and his arc ends with a nice bow on top. Like others have expressed, I think it's going to be something along the lines of "I will teach others to protect themselves." However, I could also picture an ideal about protecting himself. For example, "I realize that I am worth protecting," or "I will allow others to protect me." @Ishar on 17S had the idea of “I must choose who I have to save,” where he has to choose between two people, like a trolley problem situation.
In the second arc, we would probably see background-character Kaladin training up some of the younger or less experienced Windrunners, like Lopen and Lyn. As a Windrunner of the Fifth Ideal, he could help other people progress in their own arcs and become more sure of themselves and their abilities. I definitely see Lyn taking on more responsibility and a larger role in the second arc, so Kaladin's transition from a main character to a supporting character could probably be facilitated with some sort of phase-out between the two. He would definitely still be involved in making big decisions for the Radiants, most likely as an advisor or military leader, but he might not have many viewpoint chapters.
As far as romance goes, I think it's 50-50 for whether or not Kaladin will end up with someone. He could discover that he's personally fulfilled by his work and the friendships/dynamics around him, and that romance just isn't the thing for him. Or, with his development mostly over, he could finally be in a good mental place for a romantic relationship and might be willing to settle down for a while.
Pros: It makes a lot of sense! Kaladin is alive and happy, we have a main character who's made it to the Fifth Ideal, and the future Radiants have an example to follow and a person to advise them.
Cons: It's predictable, for the most part, and lacks some spice.
Option 2: Swearing the Fifth Ideal and Dying Right After
I’ll be honest––I’m not the biggest fan of this theory, and I don’t see it becoming true. However, I’ve seen a lot of discussion behind it, so I figured I’d include it in this list.
If this is the case, I see Kaladin swearing the 5th in a sort of self-sacrificial manner. Maybe he dies to protect others, continuing on the same themes of the rest of the Windrunner ideals. Maybe he dies without protecting anyone. In my opinion, that would be super interesting, but it would definitely be a tragic end to his arc. As I’ve seen some people discussing, the character arcs in Cosmere books are usually nicely completed. It would be a fun and interesting change to see that change, but it’s unlikely.
Obviously, Kaladin wouldn’t be alive for the second arc, but I can’t picture him doing some cognitive shadow shenanigans a la Kelsier. If he dies, I think he’s going to have to make his peace with that. He’ll need to have faith in the people who are still alive to carry things through to the end. (Or… he could lose hope entirely, but that would still render him inactive in terms of post-mortem experiences.)
Pros: It’s fun and quirky and different. Also, we wouldn’t have to worry about his level of involvement being too high or too low in the second arc.
Cons: It just doesn’t seem likely. If swearing the 5th is the indicator that his character arc is over, it kinda seems weird to kill him off immediately after.
Option 3: Stuck in the Fourth Ideal
What if he just… doesn’t, for a while? What if Kaladin has to make his peace with that?
I actually really like this storyline. It would place Kaladin in a sort of enduring limbo space, which could be interesting. He would have to find fulfillment in other parts of his life, and he might even have to watch as his fellow Windrunners swear the 5th before he can. In the event that this becomes Kaladin’s reality, he would have to remain a viewpoint character until he finds resolution. He would need to grapple with an important question: Is it possible to lead when you’re not the most powerful in the group? When you don’t have the absolute greatest capabilities on the field?
The answer is yes, but Kaladin would need to learn that through experience and interactions with other characters. He’s a leader, and while he’s been the first to swear each Windrunner ideal so far, the two are not dependent on one another. The second arc could show Kaladin making decisions, strategizing, and fighting on the field while not being in the most dramatic or power-filled struggles. What makes a good leader is the ability to lead, to know people, and to delegate certain duties accordingly. Kaladin doesn’t need to swear the 5th to do those things.
And regarding the aforementioned idea of finding fulfillment, this could be a good opportunity for Kaladin to focus on his personal connections. He could find a romantic partner, strengthen his friendships, and spend more time with his family. (That last part is definitely a bit selfish––Hesina is lovely, Kaladin’s relationship with Lirin is so wonderfully real and complicated, and I want to see more of Oroden moving forward!) In my opinion, Kaladin has been defining himself through his powers and through his Windrunner squad which, while full of friends and a great found family dynamic, is still associated with the fight against Odium. Who is Kaladin when he’s not Kaladin Stormblessed, Radiant Supreme, Bridgeman Deluxe Edition? We’d get to find out.
From there, we have 2 sub-options…
Sub-Option A: Never Swearing the Fifth Ideal
I think this is unlikely, unless he dies before he can do it. I’ll get into that more in Option 4, but I think his death would have to be in Book 5.
If Kaladin doesn’t die and still doesn’t swear the 5th, he would just have to accept it. I illustrated my ideas for his development outside of the ideals above, so just imagine those becoming his final plot resolution.
Sub-Option B: Eventually Swearing the Fifth Ideal
If Kaladin ends up swearing the 5th, then I think it’ll be in Books 9 or 10. In Option 1, I discussed the path I see for Kaladin swearing the 5th in Book 5, which would allow him to be comfortably phased out from the main character role between arcs. If he swears the 5th in Books 6-8, it would just feel rushed, and trying to work him in and out of the spotlight just feels awkward to me.
As for what happens after that, I think we need to know what goes down in the Contest of Champions. What kind of world are the Radiants dealing with post-Book 5? I’ll probably revisit this idea after I finish Book 5 and rethink everything (provided he’s alive and hasn’t sworn the 5th).
Pros: Kaladin gets a major wrench thrown in his plans, which would allow us to know him better outside of the fight. There’s also the added bonus of a sort of parallel character development to that which we’ve seen so far. Further, it’s just a nice change of pace from Kaladin’s current progression, and it’s also something we haven’t seen before in the series. Everything is so fast-paced. Kaladin could be the first to face stagnation.
Cons: As much as I love the idea, I’m not sure if it’s entirely likely. From the what we’ve seen in the first 4 books, it looks like Kaladin is progressing pretty steadily toward finishing his character development in the first arc. (There are probably more cons to this, but I’m self-aware enough to admit my own bias.)
Option 4: Kaladin Dies Before He Can Swear the Fifth Ideal
Do I believe this option is going to happen? Probably not. Do I like it? To be completely honest, yeah. I do.
I absolutely adore Kaladin, so I hate this concept from the heartbreak perspective, but this is just super new and tragic and interesting. The idea of death isn’t exactly permanent in Sanderson books, but I think having this brutal break in a character arc provides some shock value. We’ve been with Kaladin for 4 books. We know him and love him. For him to die––and to do so right before he reaches the satisfying end of his character arc––is something we haven’t seen before in the series.
Like I mentioned previously, I don’t foresee lots of cognitive shadow activity. I think when Kaladin is gone, he’s going to be gone permanently. The people around him will be affected, and there’s going to have to be a new Windrunner leader. Lyn and Lopen, who I brought up in Option 1, are possible candidates, and they would open the doors to the second arc.
I don’t think there’s much more for me to say on this point, so I won’t draw this out.
Pros: It’s new, it’s different, and it has shock value. It also makes the transition of protagonists pretty seamless.
Cons: It’s unlikely, given that every character is given a satisfying end to their arc. Also, it’s sad. :(
If you stuck it through to the end, then let me know what you think! If I got any canon information wrong, feel free to correct me––it’s been a while since I’ve reread any of the books, and I wrote this all in a sleep-deprived haze, lol. Definitely looking forward to reading any debate/discussion on this. :)

Yes, I want to hear the theory!
Ok I see I have an audience now, so here we go: Here’s my theory on why Kaladin should have his dark eyes back after swearing the fifth ideal, which I promised in this post!
If we look at the way Sanderson has talked about Stormlight, he’s made it clear it’s a wave form of Investiture, right? And waves are a form of energy. If you think about a lightbulb, it requires constant energy because the constant radiation of light is consuming constant energy. Furthermore, we know spheres get dun after a while. If we assume similar physics to our world, that’s because the radiation of light uses energy at a constant rate, and because the sphere has a fixed amount of Stormlight, eventually it starts running out.
Now, to transfer this to the concept of Radiants holding Stormlight! Here’s an excerpt of Szeth talking about Stormlight in the prologue of WoK:
“Holding his breath, he clung to the Stormlight. He could still feel it leaking out. Stormlight could be held for only a short time, a few minutes at most. It leaked away, the human body too porous a container. He had heard that the Voidbringers could hold it in perfectly. But, then, did they even exist?”
Note that Szeth says that humans leak Stormlight as well. However, he also implies the existence of those who can hold it perfectly. I’m not sure who the  Voidbringers refer to in this section, because the mythology on that is muddled with the whole ‘people are actually the Voidbringers thing’. But who would be a perfect candidate for holding it perfectly? The Radiants.
Szeth says later in the scene: “They could see that he was leaking Stormlight, wisps of it curling from his skin like luminescent smoke.”
So, we know the visible leakage of light off of his skin is Stormlight leakage. It makes sense that the glowing eyes are also Stormlight leakage, because the visible light we see is a form of energy, meaning that if we see the eyes glowing, it’s because Stormlight is escaping from there! Note that the Radiants who swore the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th ideals still leak Stormlight!
Now, we also know that the longer Radiants have been bonded to their spren, the longer their eyes take to fade. This could be because they’re becoming better containers for Stormlight, so it takes longer to fade, so we see leakage through the eyes for longer! However, if we had a perfect container, then we wouldn’t see any leakage at all. So, if it makes sense for 5th ideal Radiants to be the perfect vessel Szeth talks about, they wouldn’t leak any Stormlight. And since the glowing of eyes and the wisps of light from the skin are leakage, they wouldn’t be there anymore! In conclusion: LetKaladinHaveDarkEyes2023!

Why does Fjord need so many teleports? Or, a comparison of teleportation abilities.
Arcane Gate means that Fjord has a current roster of five teleportation abilities: Thunder Step, Relentless Hex, Far Step, the Star Razor enchantment, and Arcane Gate. He's additionally cast two more in the past that he no longer has current access to, Misty Step and Blink, for a total of seven teleportation abilities used overall. So, why does he have all these different teleports? What does he need so many for?
Let’s have a look at what each of these does and what situations they’re ideal for. Because he does not have current access to Blink and Misty Step, I won’t be discussing them. Though, he will regain Misty Step if he takes a fifth level in paladin, so that will be fun.
Tumblr media
Thunder Step
3rd level spell with a casting time of an action. Fjord teleports a maximum of 90 feet to a point he can see. He may bring one willing creature, who must be within 5 feet; if the creature is unwilling, they are left behind. The spell is audible 300 feet away, and at 5th level, it deals 5d10 thunder damage to all creatures within 10 feet of the space left. He can teleport from a point in mid-air to another point in mid-air.
Thunder Step's damage-dealing and ability to take one willing creature makes it ideal for combat rescues or exfils. Caleb on the Squalleater in 2.43, Caduceus from the ice elementals in 2.116, even the failed attempts with Marius in 2.35 and Yasha in 2.69 are excellent examples. However, Thunder Step is very loud, making it awful for stealth scenarios, and the damage makes it difficult to use in tight spaces with allies.
Relentless Hex
Eldritch Invocation that grants a rider to Hex, a 1st level spell, and Hexblade’s Curse, a subclass feature. Using a bonus action, Fjord teleports a maximum of 30 feet to a cursed target he can see. He can do this once per turn for the curse duration: one hour of concentration for Hex at 1st level and 24 hours of concentration at 5th level, one minute for Hexblade’s Curse. He can teleport from a point in mid-air to another point in mid-air.
Relentless Hex is for hunting. It’s ideal for closing into melee range with a specific target. Because it’s a rider, it costs nothing other than the bonus action, making it an often superior option for this purpose. The fact that it centers a teleport on a target and costs no spell slots to use means it offers some creative uses. It’s been used to remove Fjord from a grapple in 2.66 and 2.82. However, this also means Relentless Hex is not useful in situations where teleporting freely to any location is desired.
Far Step
5th spell with a casting time of a bonus action. Fjord teleports a maximum of 60 feet to a point he can see. He can repeat this once per turn for one minute of concentration. He can teleport from a point in mid-air to another point in mid-air.
Far Step works well when teleporting repeatedly in combat. Because his other multiple use teleport, Relentless Hex, is centered on a target, Far Step offers Fjord freer rein on his field positioning. It’s used in this manner against the Deep Scions in 2.98 and briefly in the Takers fight in 2.123. With the loss of Misty Step, this is also Fjord’s current best option for stealthily teleporting into a location.
Star Razor enchantment
Grants a reaction taken when struck by a melee attack from a creature within 5 feet. Fjord teleports 15 feet, presumably to a point he can see. The triggering attack also invokes 1d12 radiant damage. He can repeat this once per turn, and this ability is available passively.
This enchantment punishes enemies for engaging Fjord in melee; the teleportation forces an enemy to spend movement to keep attacking Fjord. In interest of space, for further discussion on how the Star Razor imposes tolls and works in Fjord’s mechanical build, see this post and also this post. This ability also allows him limited repositioning in a new circumstances much more immediately, such as when Zoran began his turn by moving to flank Fjord in 2.123 and teleporting moved Fjord out of that after one attack.
Arcane Gate
6th level spell with a casting time of one action, available once per day as a Mystic Arcanum. He creates two portals, one in 10 feet of himself and another a maximum of 500 feet away to a point he can see. For ten minutes of concentration, any creature or object passes between them as if they’re adjacent. The points selected must be on the ground. For a fuller breakdown of this spell’s mechanics and limits, see this post.
Arcane Gate is ideal for quickly teleporting multiple people, as used in 2.127. Similar situations it may have been useful for include crossing the bridge in the Underdark in 2.50 and moving to the roof in Uthodurn in 2.76. Its duration and ability to be easily hidden is also ideal for quick get in-get out scenarios, which would’ve been potentially useful for infiltrating the High Richter’s house in 2.12. Because objects can be sent alone, i.e. without being carried, it’s also useful for teleporting objects above one’s carrying capacity so long as one can figure out how to get it through the portal. Or, throwing lit powder kegs through.
