I think it’s interesting that the Skybreakers are the only order of Radiant that we know all five Ideals for. It seems like most, if not all of the other orders have to discover things as they go, but the Skybreakers have it mostly worked out, with *some* room for individual choice
The First Ideal for Skybreakers is the generic “Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.” They call it the Ideal of Radiance
The Second Ideal is the Ideal of Justice. In Szeth’s words, it’s “I swear to seek justice, to let it guide me, until I find a more perfect Ideal.”
The Third Ideal is the Ideal of Law. This is the one Skybreakers have to follow until and unless they swear the Fifth Ideal. I’m not sure what happens if the thing a Skybreaker chooses as their Third Ideal fails before they swear the Fifth, but something Szeth says in RoW makes me think that they’d have to find something else to follow so their Nahel bond isn’t broken. Then again, Szeth’s interpretation might not be accurate, especially since he holds so strongly to rules/codes/Ideals he’s latched onto. Either way, the Skybreaker Third Ideal according to Szeth is “I swear to follow the will of Dalinar Kholin. This is my oath.” We see him grapple with that more in his RoW interlude
The Skybreaker Fourth Ideal is the Ideal of Crusade. This is where they pick a larger goal to attain, and they can only accomplish it if their spren is satisfied. For Szeth, the Fourth Ideal is “I will cleanse the Shin of their false leaders, so long as Dalinar Kholin agrees.”
Again, this is where Skybreakers are different than other Radiants we’ve seen so far. For example, Windrunners don’t know the gist of their Fourth Ideal until they’re forced against it, if Kaladin is a fairly accurate example. Skybreakers know the *idea* of what their Fourth Ideal will be, even if the *details* take form over time. I also think it’s super interesting that they can state what their Fourth Ideal will be in advance, even if it takes months, years, or even decades to accomplish whatever goal they set for themselves. In OB chapter 90, a Skybreaker Master says that they were at the Third Ideal for two decades before attaining the Fourth.
And the Fifth Ideal for the Skybreakers is the Ideal of Law. This is where the Skybreaker becomes law and Truth. Nale is the only example we have in modern times of a Skybreaker who has sworn that Ideal, and his situation is complicated, since he’s a Herald. Even in OB chapter 90, though, a Skybreaker master says that it’s been centuries since a member of their order reached the Fifth Ideal. I don’t know if Nale was the last, or if there have been a few since he reached the Fifth Ideal.
Szeth hasn’t sworn the Fifth Ideal as a Skybreaker. I theorize that he will swear it at some point, partially because it fits so well with a previous headcanon of mine. I also think it’d be super meaningful/impactful for Szeth to swear an Ideal that allows him to make his own decisions/enforce his own will. In OB chapter 106, Nale tells Szeth that he’s the first in a new order of Skybreakers. There has to be some kind of significance to that, but we don’t have all the pieces yet. Nale didn’t prevent Szeth from joining Dalinar and the Coalition after the Battle of Thaylen Field, and I wonder if that was intentional.
If one Radiant swears the Fifth Ideal in KoWT, it *might* be Szeth. I do want him to reach that point eventually, but I also worry that it could feel rushed in KoWT, especially since he said the first Three Ideals so quickly (he said the first two Ideals on the same day, and the Third like a month later lol)
I think I got off track from my original point. This post definitely ended up being longer than I thought it would.
Tl,dr. Skybreakers are unique as far as I can tell/remember, and the fact that their Ideals are broadly laid out ahead of time makes for some interesting possibilities. And I also included Szethposting, because of course I did
It cannot be understated how much this stupid cop drives me up the wall.
"Uhh ohh you were an accidental, unknowing accessory to murder a few decades ago and spend your spare time making shoes for poor kids? Too bad so sad justice never expires 😎"
Just because r/fuckmoash thinks Moash is the worst person in the Stormlight Archive doesn't mean he's actually portrayed that way, like you can actually look in the books and see what Brandon wrote instead of taking the worst parts of Stormlight reddit as gospel
Trying to make character designs for the first chapter of WoK I experimented a bit style wise and tried a shape based approach. I quite like what came of it. So I added Kaladin and Shallan as they appear first in the books for good measure. :)
Ardent asked why Kalak turned out such a gremlin / igor and the obvious answer is that a little, paranoid gremlin is what i see when I try to imagine him... 😅
Image description below:
[ID: Character line-up depicting the Herald Kalak, Nale, Elhokar, Dalinar, Szeth, Kaladin and Shallan, all standing in front of a neutral grey background. The style is based on shapes of flat colours with lines and shading here and there to convey depth and details.
Kalak is a small man with tan skin, hunched shoulders, nervously looking to the side. He has a very high forehead, his black hair coming from what might be a hairline starting to recede. He wears a long, purple light-eyes vest that comes down to his knees, where is wide pants end and his boots begin. Under it he wears a dress short in a pale violet with wide sleeves and a high collar.
Nale has dark skin, is bald and stands upright with both his hands behind his back. He wears a dark black-purple-bluish coat over a light-eyed vest of similar colour belted with a scarf of a lighter shade. The coat ends in sharp, triangular angles both on the back- and the front side. Nale’s crescent shaped scar is very visible on his right cheek.
Elhokar is wearing a light-eyes coat of a deep blue, with silver ornamentation especially on the shoulders and the front. The lower part of his flares out a bit.
His right hand hesitantly raised to his chest, he looks to the side with big green eyes, dark eyebrows, a big curved nose and full lips. His expression speaking of a youthful insecurity.
Dalinar is taller of them all, and very broad in his shoulders, chest and arms. He wears a traditional takama, a skirt-like garment of a dark blue cloth folded many times around his waist. His blue jacket his open on the front, showing strongly developed chest muscles and some greying chest hair. Under the takama he wear very big boots of a matching colour. He looks pretty grumpy. The area under his eyebrows in shadow with his blue eyes looking intense. There is a flush in his cheeks and arrows his nose. In his left hand he holds an empty glass bottle.
Szeth is small, he barely comes up to Dalinar’s and Kaladin’s shoulder. He wears his white, flowing assassins attire. A long loose vest over a white short and pants, with soft grey shoes. His sleeves are wide bit reined in at the wrists. A white scarf forms a hood around his head, from which is face glowers with a morose expression. His left hand is stretched to his side as if in the process of summoning a shardblade.
Kaladin is in bridgeman attire from Way of Kings, with dark blue pants that go a bit below his knees, sandals on his feet, a white loose shirt, sleeves rolled up, under a bridgeman vest of dirty rough cloth with some old bloodstains and padded shoulder parts. His shapes are exaggerated, very gangly, a narrow face with framed by wavy black hair and a similarly wavy dark, full beard. His skin is a tan colour, his nose long and curved and his eyes slighty slanted under strong eyebrows.
Shallan wears a light blue havah ornamented with thin golden stripes and broad golden bands on the shoulders, the bottom line of her dress and the end of her sleeves. Her full, wavy hair of a dark orange falls around her round face onto her shoulders, a small section on the top forming a top-knot. In her hands she holds the straps of a brown Messanger bag.]
•Her tattoo is intentionally(on her part) based off of Nale’s crescent tattoo
Shrug. ANYWAYS I LPVE HER<333
Criticism & suggestions welcome!!!
[ID: An illustration of a tan young woman from the bust up. She has semi curly black hair, put into two long braids, with pale yellow eyes. She’s wearing a high collared, jean blue shirt with a bulky brown cloak, & earrings with blue gemstones in them. She has a blue tattoo under her eye in the shape of a circle-crescent. She has a beauty mark under the left side of her mouth. To her left, a handwritten title saying “Alani & Zenel”. To her right, a rip in space hovers next to her.]
So in the over two years that my Szeth hyperfixation has lasted, I’ve also learned as much as I can about related topics, like Shinovar, the Honorblades, and the Skybreakers.
I was thinking about all the things I’ve learned, and realized that the Skybreakers might be my favorite order of the Knights Radiant now. They’re so damn fascinating, and I’m certain that there are layers that we haven’t seen yet. The modern Skybreakers are rigid and ruthless because Nale is rigid and ruthless. They were different in the past, and I think they can be different again. I also think we’re seeing the beginnings of a split in the order, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how that progresses
I didn’t expect my love of the weirdest white bald man in Stormlight to lead to all these other thoughts, but here I am lol
Favorite Boardgames of Each Order of the Knights Radiant
It’s Radiant Boardgame Night on Roshar! What would be the favorite boardgame of each Order of the Knights Radiant?
1. Bondsmiths: Connect Four
It’s a game about forging connections!
Stormfather: Yes, Dalinar, allow the red pieces to fall into place! Complete the line! Forge the bond!
Sibling: Use your wily human ways to be victorious, Navani!! Go diagonal or something!
Dalinar: They certainly are...invested in this game.
Navani: Just so long as the Stormfather doesn’t blow over the board when I win.
Navani: ...Again.
Stormfather: I’m very invested in connecting!!
2. Dustbringers: Jenga
With their surges of Division and Abrasian, the Dustbringers have powers that could be called...destructive. I think they’d enjoy Jenga.
Malata: Ha, ha! I have made the tower CRUMBLE
Ral-na: You are aware, of course, that per the rules, this means you have lost the game.
Malata: Wait, we’re playing by the rules?
3. Truthwatchers: Clue
The Truthwatchers believe in finding and sharing the truth. Like...the truth of who murdered Mr. Body this time!
Renarin: It was Mr. Green in the Library with the Wrench!
Rlain: You won AGAIN?!
Stump: You’re not using your future sight or something, are you kid?
Rlain: You know Renarin wouldn’t do that.
Stump (muttering): Just think it’s weird that I never win.
Renarin: That might be because you always accuse Colonel Mustard.
Stump: That mustache is DEFINITELY hiding something!
4. Skybreakers: Monopoly
The Skybreakers believe in obeying the law, no matter what. And if there’s a game that people don’t normally follow the actual rules for, it’s this one. The Skybreakers? They’d play it “right.”
Szeth: The other knights speak of something called “House Rules” for this game.
Nale: “House rules” are not rules at all, but merely inventions of unreliable human actors who wish the game to be “shorter” or “more fun.”
Nale: We will NOT continue the game until SOMEBODY buys this property at auction.
Joret: Personally, I LOVE not having fun!
Cali (muttering): Kiss-ass.
5. Lightweavers: Pictionary
With their artistic skills, Pictionary would surely be a delight for the Lightweavers.
Beryl: It’s an apple!
Shallan: Shhh...hang on...I’m not done...
Vathah: Come on, come on, that’s already the best drawn apple we’ve ever seen, etc.
Shallan: Aaand done!
Gaz: Time’s up.
Ishnah: It’s still tied.
Ishnah: Mostly because we’re all drawing only one picture per round.
Shallan: Maybe timed games aren’t really for us...
6. Willshapers: Mousetrap
The Willshapers love two things: building and freeing those who have been unjustly imprisoned.
Eshonai: Wait, you said this game was about freedom, but it seems that I will be trying to trap you in a mouse jail?
Venli: Shhh...I’m putting the final touches on my mousetrap! Ha! It looks AMAZING
Eshonai: Are we trying to keep ourselves free by imprisoning others? Is that..okay?
Venli: Don’t think too hard about it.
7. Elsecallers: Scrabble
The Elsecallers are thoughtful, scholarly, and logical. I think they’d enjoy transforming a bunch of disparate letters into words!
Jasnah: Ah, I seem to have another 7-letter word. Amusingly, it is “radiant.”
Jasnah: And over here I can make “crab,” which is not bad with the “b” counting twice on the triple letter score.
Jasnah: Looks like Side A is currently winning.
Jasnah: ...
Jasnah: Sometimes I wish there were other Elsecallers.
8. Stonewards: Risk
The Stonewards tend to be soldiers and to enjoy warfare, weaponry, and challenges. They can make do in difficult circumstances. It seems like they’d enjoy a good game of Risk!
Zu: I shall reinforce Greenland! That is where my troops are most needed!
Badali: Wow, another game heading into its third hour!
Badali: Take two people who are both stubborn and good at strategy...
Zu: And you have great fun all afternoon?
Badali: That’s what I was going to say!
9. Edgedancers: Pandemic
The Edgedancers are healers and helpers, those who listen to people who may otherwise be ignored and remember those who may be forgotten. I think a lovely cooperative game, and one in which you work together to heal the world, would be great for them.
Lift: I did it! I discovered one of the cures!
Godeke: Great job, kid!
Lorain: It’s no nice to play this game without a worldwide pandemic actually going on, huh?
Godeke: What, uh, made you say that?
Lorain: You know, I have no idea!
10. Windrunners: Chess
I know chess may sound like an Elsecaller game, but hear me out. The Windrunners are all about military ranks, and in chess all the pieces represent a rank. The Windrunners believe in protecting the weak--like the king piece. Sometimes they have to accept that they can’t protect everyone, like when they must sacrifice pawns. They’re good at working in tandem, and chess is about getting disparate pieces to work together. So Chess seems like something they’d enjoy...with maybe a few exceptions.
Kaladin: Well, this game gets one thing right.
Teft: That it takes a squad to protect a man?
Skar: That the ardents go their own way?
Sigzil: Bishops.
Skar: Whatever.
Moash: That everyone is forced to protect the king, even though he is demonstrably the weakest and most useless piece?
Lyn: That any pawn can attain ultimate power?
Kaladin: No.
Kaladin: It gets horses right.
Kaladin: Why are they the only piece that consists of a giant, creepy head?
Kaladin: Why are they big as the castle?
Kaladin: Why the hell do they move like that?!
Kaladin: This is a game about how terrifying and creepy horses are.
Teft: Maaaaybe that’s enough chess for today.
Kaladin (whispering): No one gets me like chess does.
My storyboard / animatic for The Stormlight Archive: Edgedancer.
I reallly liked this book!! Especially this chapter, and wanted to make a storyboard for it. It was good practice and I would like to make more like this :D
