Questioner: We've seen Renarin do some pretty *inaudible* things both in Oathbringer and in Rhythm of War.
And my question was, are Truthwatchers able to use aspects of the Progression and Lightweaving surge to have someone or something become a different version of itself?
Brandon Sanderson: They can't make that happen, but they can certainly invite.

Questioners: what was your inspiration for Wayne?
Branderson: i once dropped a hat under a cabbage leaf and this grown man popped out and started making dick jokes.
He is currently at large and he is unstoppable
If you want to stop him, you'll have to think like him. Unfortunately, he is incomprehensible
He is holding me hostage

Lews Therin Telescope, what do you know? What have you learned?
I think you cracked the last unknown Shard with something like Intellect (which lines up with the “Wisdom” or “Prudence” theories). Alternatively, is Virtuosity a dual Shard of Artistry and Intellect?
Or maybe you found something more narrowly about Stormlight? Invention - Navani, Artistry - Shallan, Intellect - Jasnah?

kind of annoyed at the wob that was talking about sah’s daughter and brandon was like “she’s fine. well, as fine as you can be living under the oppression of the fused, but she’s alive and she’s being taken care of.” just because like. yes, the fused are oppressive to singers, but based on the scenes we’ve seen of fused-occupied kholinar, it’s like fine for singers, especially considering the alternative of slavery under humans. just felt kind of like one dimensional bad guy logic, like oh she’s as fine as she can be living w the bad guys (best living conditions she’s ever experienced).

Magic Systems
Tumblr media
Brandon Sanderson:
Interesting conversations here. I strongly agree with the top comment here as of my posting, which points out that soft magic isn't any worse than hard magic. Both are tools for storytelling, and are used in different situations.
I also thought I should point something out. At least by my definitions, a magic is not soft or hard based on its adherence to external logic. A hard magic system is a reliable magic system, capable of being used by the characters to produce consistent results. A soft magic system is one that exists in an uncontrollable space by the viewpoint characters, with consequences that cannot be anticipated.
Therefore, the One Ring is a hard magic. Gandalf is a soft magic. Because the primary viewpoint protagonists (and the reader) can anticipate what the One Ring can do, and what the consequences will be. They cannot (by design) anticipate the same for Gandalf, at least within the confines of the Lord of the Rings books themselves.
Internal Logic (whether something is consistent) is the foundation of hard magic systems. Adding External Logic (i.e. scientific reasons why the magic works from an outsider perspective, or rationale as to how everything is powered) can make a magic easier to understand for a reader--but isn't needed for the system to he hard.
The OP is mistaking these two. An "electricity" system that is consistent and always works, and can be used by the main characters, is a hard magic--whether or not the External Logic (explaining things like where the power comes from) is sound does not influence this.
I literally have a magic system where an electricity-like substance comes from the sky, and it's considered one of the harder magic systems on the market today.
Remember most of all--such definitions are tools to use or discard as you try to achieve a specific kind of story. The distinctions are only relevant as to their ability to help you worldbuild as you wish, and are not hardfast. There are no rules you need to follow as a storyteller or worldbuilder, only suggestions from those who have come before--with explanations as to why these definitions have helped us achieve our narrative goals.

Ngl my immediate first thought was picturing Kelsier doing lines of metal off of Dox's desk just to annoy him.

Continuity question:
Just prior to meeting with the Nightwatcher 5.5 years ago, Dalinar wakes up at the end of a highstorm and seems to have experienced a vision from Stormfather. But in The Way of Kings, Dalinar says that the visions only began "a few months ago." He also seems to have specific memory of the "first" even if he can't recall all of the details, and it seems unlikely he would have visions for several years without anyone having noticed.
So, should we assume that (1) this strange "dream" in Oathbringer was not actually a one of Honor's visions? Is that just a weird dream, or perhaps some OTHER vision from Stormfather?
Or, (2) this is one of Honor's visions and any contradictory details from The Way of Kings are superseded by Oathbringer?
Or, (3) this is one of Honor's visions, and Dalinar just doesn't remember his history of the visions very well.
Brandon Sanderson
So, I did this quite intentionally, it's not number two. But I expected these questions to be asked, and it's a RAFO, but it's one of these RAFOs where I wrote it very deliberately the way I did on purpose, and I'm going to leave it to your speculation as to what it means. Skype Q&A (Oct. 8, 2018)

WoB from the White Sand Vol 1 Release Party, 2016-06-28
Questioner: So, with your Herdazian terms where- where did those come from? Is “Gon” just a fun sound for Lopen to say, or is it from a real language or... (inaudible)
Brandon: Ah, yes. A mix, a lot of Herdazian is supposed to sound like a Romantic language, constructed that way. Uh, “Gon”- or “Goncha”, the other version of the word- it actually has it’s own story. So there’s this old mafia movie from the seventies, Goncharov. The main character, the leader of this Russian Mob in Southern Italy, is sometimes called Gon or Goncha for short, and growing up there was an inside joke about calling your boss that. And- well there’s a lot of interesting stuff in this movie, but part of it is like I said, Russian mob in Italian mafia territory, so that was probably a connecting thought I had, how Herdazian characters in Alethkar are at a weird place of connection and belonging and alienation, but also just an inside joke because The Lopen is a very fun and funny character.
don’t ask how long it took for me to hunt this down, anyway how long do you think we have until we see a Goncharov stormlight au on ao3 now
