Halfa Jazz AU

Except it’s not 16 year old Jazz. No. It’s 14 year old Jazz who gets shocked by the portal.

You see the day after their parents failed to make the portal work, and left 14 year old Jazz to look after 12 year old Danny (and the two friends he’d invited over). Jazz got shocked by the portal and turned into a half-ghost. With Danny, Sam and Tucker as witnesses.

How’d this happen?

Easy. Sam wanted to see the creepy ghost lab she’d heard Tucker talk about at school when talking about going to Danny’s house. She thinks Tucker is exaggerating about how scary it is. Danny, wanting to impress the new friend he’d only had for a bit longer than a month, agrees to sneak her and Tucker down into the basement too look around when his parents were out of the house.

So after the Fenton parents are gone, and Jazz goes to her room to do her homework leaving Danny, Sam, and Tucker alone in the living room to watch cartoons (or so she thought). The three 12 year olds sneak down into the lab to start poking around, as nosy 12 year olds without supervision are wont to do.

While at first the two non-Fenton kids were enthralled by the strange inventions and mysterious substances in tubes, they eventually got bored and less careful. And started messing around. Sam fishes a hacky sack out of her backpack, and starts doing tricks, Tucker makes a bet he can do more tricks than her.

Which escalates to a said hacky sack ending up at the back of the non-functional Fenton portal. And Jazz coming down to check on them and to get a snack, see they’re not in the living room, search the rest of the house, and walk into the basement to see Danny start putting on his hazmat suit to go and fetch a hacky sack.

Which Jazz puts a stop to immediately. Danny is far too young to be climbing around inside their parents’ dangerous inventions, even if they seemingly don’t work. Jazz also knows she can’t leave the hacky sack in the portal because more likely than not her parents will get home, return to their obsession with the portal, try to turn it on, and the hacky sack will catch fire and burn the house down. [Can you tell she’s catastophizing? Cause she is. She lives in the Fenton house, this is her normal setting, and it tends to work out pretty well for her 90% of the time. Things that can go wrong tend to in that house.]

She can’t leave the hacky sack in there, it will inevitably end with them being homeless due to a house fire. She can’t trust her parents to fish it out before they try to start tinkering with the portal again, she knows them too well, so the end result is the same. So the only option is to go in and get it out herself, and then give Danny and his friends a stern talking to about messing around in the lab, and even bringing his friends into the lab in the first place in Danny’s case.

So she puts on her hazmat suit, firmly telling Danny and his friends to stay well away from the portal. And well...

Jazz Fenton was just 14 when she’d entered her parent’s very strange machine and unintentionally opened the door to a world unseen.

Jazz’s ghost hero name is Psyche. Jazz doesn’t intend to become a ghostly superhero, but finds she can’t sit back and do nothing, when the news comes on to tell her that her little brother’s middle school is getting attacked by a giant meat monster.

Psyche has different relationships to the ghostly rogues than Canon!Phantom does.

She’s got a bitter nemesis-ship with Spectra for example. Jazz might have called the ghost psychiatrist an “Unethical Hack” who “Was licenced in the 1800s” and “Thinks the lobotomy is the pinnacle of psychiatric treatment”.

Nocturne is her Ancient/ghostly guardian (in place of how a lot of the phandom sees Clockwork as that for Danny) correlation, due to the connection between dreams and psychology.

Psyche vs Plasmius is truly wild. Because after getting his offer of fatherhood/evil mentor is rejected too many times, Vlad doesn’t try to clone Jazz. No, he kidnaps Danny and attempts to turn him into a halfa.

With the idea being that due to Danny being younger, he’d be more easily influenced. Along with the fact that if Vlad was the first strongest presence Danny’s newly formed ghost core sensed, if Vlad played his cards right, there’s a serious chance Danny’s newly formed child ghost core would imprint on Vlad’s ghostly signature like a baby duckling. Making Vlad his ghostly parent, and giving him significant influence over Danny’s mental state.

I haven’t decided if Jazz manages to stop Vlad in time and rescue Danny. At least, not quick enough to leave him completely human that is.

childhood friends danny and jason miscellaneous thoughts: because why not, i'm reworking ch2 because it no longer fits with the remaster of chapter 1 so i've been thinking of them, and i love talking about them. which you should totally go read the remaster because its 26k words and im very proud of it and it barely got any attention.

First off Ellie vapes. Mostly because I think its real fucking funny. The first time Danny finds out about it he gets all up in arms about it. Ellie at first thinks its because she's smoking -- which, helloooo pot meet kettle, Danny has been smoking for a lot longer than she has.

And then he throws a curveball at her and says he's upset specifically because its vaping. Like no, no. Dammit, if you're gonna fuck up your lungs you gotta do it properly, none of this cotton-candy flavored nonsense.

He plays it up for laughs and it's largely non-serious 'i can't believe you're using a vape', if only to hide the fact that he is genuinely displeased with his little sister smoking. Self-destructive behaviors and bad habits are his thing, thank you very much.

But, well, he knows he'd be a hypocrite if he told her he didn't like that she was smoking. He's aware its bad for him, but habits are hard to break and he's not particularly keen to break this one in particular.

Danny bullies her relentlessly about it whenever she vapes in front of him. Like don't be a loser, Elle, carry a carton of cigs and a lighter in your back pocket like the rest of us degenerates.

Secondly: Danny's piercings? He got the first lobe piercings as a lost bet from Sam in junior year, and they did it in her room with a needle, a small bottle of blood blossom extract, and an apple. He broke out in hives for a week after thanks to the blood blossom, but it prevented the hole from healing up :)

He got the rest done professionally at a piercing place in the Ghost Zone. He asked Johnny where to find it. Sam and Johnny (and Kitty) nearly convinced him into getting snakebites. He got an eyebrow piercing instead.

Danny's undercut is also self-done, he did it because Technus shot at him with an ectoblast and it missed hitting him, but set his hair on fire. Danny got it out pretty quickly, but it left his hair lopsided and obviously looking like it got burned by something. He went to Sam for help after the fight. He liked the way it looks so he's kept it that way since.

Vlad brought up Jason once(1) in a taunt during a fight, and this was after Jason disappeared from the ghost zone, and Danny very. very nearly killed him on the spot. He hasn't done it since.

Which leads into the other thing: Grief Triggers! As I call them. All Banshees have them in this au.

While all banshees are, in general, in a permanent state of grief, Grief Triggers are a specific emotional response that can cause them to spiral into a state of intense, sometimes debilitating sorrow, and most of the time causes them to start wailing.

Banshees know what their Grief Triggers are and in general tend to try and build up a form of resistance against it so that, if something occurs that happens to trigger said grief, they can at least either get away from other ghosts to let loose or have enough control over themselves that it'll take more work to send them spiraling.

As expected, Jason is Danny's grief trigger. He's built up a pretty good resistance to it so that hey, talking about him and his death is easier than when Danny was fourteen. But a little more prodding and it will trigger, especially depending on who brings him up and how. (See: Vlad)

Grief Triggers also manifest relatively the same; with the induction of an intense state of grief and sorrow, but how a banshee acts on it can sometimes vary. Again, it depends on who triggers it and how. Some of them can get,,, violent, depending on how it happens.

Rath, this au's 'Dan', is a case of a banshee being put into the grief state caused by grief triggers and... never really leaving it. Which they usually do on their own, or with help depending on the severity of it.

At the time it happened Danny was going through the worst week of his life a second time: his best friend's ghost disappeared, then his family and friends all died right in front of him, and then he was stuck with someone who wasn't helping him through that grief.

He was already in the grieving state when Vlad tore out his ghost half. As a result, Vlad only made it worse. With that fury thrown into the mix, Vlad ended up getting torn apart and nobody else was close enough with nor could they get close enough to Rath to help him come down from the wailing state.

So Rath ended up getting stuck in a perpetual negative feedback loop of absolute misery, and well... drove himself insane. The rest of the world became collateral as a result.

the difference between Danny and Jason lies in the fact that Jason died, while Danny is dead.

I'm having more thoughts on the CFAU/TMWS universe banshees, actually.

Banshees are either born in the ghost zone from ectoplasm and are ecto-entities and work as banshees as how we know of them, or they're human spirits that died mourning someone and that grief was so intense that it turned them into a banshee. They're a little more rare.

These banshees typically mourn only one person, or sometimes they follow their Realm-born counterparts and choose a family to mourn for. Typically their own.

Ember is not a banshee; human spirit banshees are always mourning another person. However, her abilities emulate certain qualities of banshees: like the beautiful singing. But in comparison to an actual banshee, Ember's voice pales.

Does this mean Danny has the better singing voice? Yeah. Ember is incensed by this.

If canon Danny and CFAU/TMWS Danny met, I think canon Danny would be kinda unsettled or off put by CFAU.

CFAU Danny still has some pretty core Danny traits, at least I like to think so -- his general drive to help people just out of compassion for them (even if it manifests differently at first due to trauma), his wit and humor, his fear of failing to protect his loved ones, all of those resonate with canon Danny.

However, canon Danny, as far as I can remember and as far as his wiki goes, rarely gets extremely angry or emotional. He gets irritated and he gets annoyed but him getting mad I don't think happens super often. CFAU Danny is the angrier one between Jason and Danny. It's one of the things I consider a division point between him and canon Danny as it's a result of him growing up in Crime Alley. Canon Danny is canonically shy and meek prior to becoming Phantom, CFAU Danny couldn't be -- he'd be dead already.

CFAU Danny's anger would off put canon Danny, in my opinion. His anger, his smoking, and for lack of a better term, his bloodlust would unsettle him.

Like, for example, say CFAU Danny gets transported to a canon (or canon-adjacent) Danny's universe. He's staying with canon for a little bit as they brainstorm how to get him back home, and CFAU Danny goes to school with canon if only so that he's not stuck in the house all day.

Whether they try and pass CFAU Danny off as canon's cousin or if the town already knows that he's another version of Danny, it doesn't matter. Because insert Dash.

Dash who, in CFAU Danny's world, has since learned not to fuck around with Danny or the other kids because Danny has long since asserted that he will beat his ass if he does. 'Fucking around' always predates the 'finding out', and Danny is happy to act as consequence.

(As my father told me (paraphrased) when I was a small child and full of uncontrollable anger: "there's gonna be a day where you're gonna hit someone, and they're gonna hit you back")

And canon Dash, who is used to canon Danny who kinda just takes it because it means that he won't target other people, would see CFAU Danny. He'd notice the resemblance between him and canon, immediately try and go "oh new target!", and try and bully him the same way he does to canon. And Danny "I am the consequences of your actions" CFAU Fenton, instantly throws hands.

Just, CFAU Danny is kind but he's also Gotham-raised and full of bite; he's meaner than canon is. He's more ruthless too, especially in his ghost fights. The ease of which he slips into violence would, imo, discomfort canon. CFAU and Canon would eventually get along though, they're not so different that they'd be in constant clash of each other.

DP x DC Writing Prompt #10

Damian wakes up to low-pitched arguing, and in his daze thinks the hand running through his hair is Richard's.

"S'rry," he murmurs, turning his cheek into the hand. His head hurts, and Richard's hand is cool against his cheek, delicate nails ghosting over his scalp.

Hm. Richard does not have delicate nails. Nor a woman's voice.

"-lty is to Danny, all you've done is put a bigger target on our backs!"

"So be it," the young woman says, voice measured. It's her hand that's in Damian's hair. He'd pull away but his body is weighed down, eyelids barely ably to slip open to grab a glimpse of ginger hair before slamming shut again.

He's...drugged. He thinks. Nothing he recognizes immediately, but it's been a while since his poisoning sessions and thinking right now is difficult. His mask is still on, which means his identity is intact. There's nothing he can do except hope it will stay that way.

And so he sinks back under.

Some time later, he resurfaces with more lucidity. He's still costumed, mask on. His body still feels heavy, but this time he can wedge his eyes open enough to catch three figures next to the bed he now lies on. The redhead stands closest.

"--you an out," she is saying, her back to Damian. The other two, a pale girl with pitch black hair and a boy wearing a red cap, look at each other.

"That's not what we're asking for, and you know it!" The pale girl yells.

"That doesn't mean you shouldn't take it." The woman says, her voice extremely level in comparison. This only seems to agitate the girl further.

"Team Phantom means we make decisions as a team, Jazz." The boy says through grit teeth. "And if you had run this by us, we would've,"

"Said no--" the pale girl says, meanly.

"--At least figured out a better way," the boy says, head turning sharply towards the girl. "Between this and Jefferson you've been making really rash choices. We can't find Danny if we get caught by the Justice Loogies--"

"Team Phantom," the redhead interrupts. She turns towards Damian, and if she notices he's awake, she doesn't say anything. "You really don't get it, do you. There is no Team Phantom, because Danny's gone. We're not going to find him."

"Stop eating their bs--"

"Stop living in denial, Sam. Both of you. We can't find Danny because Danny's not anywhere to be found."

"They wouldn't get rid of him--"

"Why wouldn't they? Don't you see?" Jazz says, whirling around. She waves a blurry arm in Damian's direction.

"They can recreate the experiment anytime they want. And they do want. They found his genetic doppelgänger when they got their hands on Robin's blood. That's what they had on file in Jefferson."

Jefferson, Damian thinks. It's familiar. Information starts to filter in. It's not a person, but a place. There was an explosion at a government facility. Blew up three city blocks. 45 Casualties.

The redhead's a terrorist. He thinks. Redhead.

Fuck. She'd been getting mugged. He'd rescued her. Her face had been bruised.

She'd wanted to go to the hospital. Held onto his cape for dear life. Flinched back from Richard.

He'd smirked at Grayson before offering to escort her.

He'd felt important.

...He'd been an idiot.

"--You really think he'd just hand him over?"

"I don't know anything about Batman," the girl says. "But I'm not letting another brother die."

There's a sharp inhale, and neither side speaks.

"So that's it," the pale girl says. "You give up and immediately go get a replacement?"

"Sam..." the boy says warningly.

"Danny would want me to protect him," Jazz says. "So that's what I'm going to do. And you are free to leave."

"You're acting fucking crazy," Sam says. "And you're too deep in your grief to realize it. Danny would want none of this."

"Well then maybe it's a good thing he's not here," Jazz says, "Maybe I should be thanking you two instead."

The resulting silence is so sharp Damian hears only the sound of his own breaths.

"Fuck you," the girl spits, a door slamming a split second later. The boy doesn't say a word, crossing over to Damian.

"I'm going to keep looking, Jazz," he says, after a long moment. "I'm going to find him. Because he's alive."

Jazz doesn't respond.

"Listen, they found Robin's blood, right? They don't know who he is, so if we tell him to stop with the costume, lay low-"

"They'll finger prick all of Gotham if they have to. You know that. They can't get to him here, not with the portals and research destroyed. Even if they catch Mom and Dad, the ghosts will rip them to pieces if they ever step foot in the zone."

Jazz steps closer to Damian. "Here, Superman won't be able to hear his heartbeat."

"What happens when he wakes up? Wants to go home? He must have a family out there, he can't be Robin 24/7."

"You know I used to read to Danny?" Jazz says. Her voice is distant. "Every night before bed. He'd never heard a fairy tale before. He could read, of course, but he liked the way—" Jazz swallows. "He liked the way I did the voices. We were supposed to be in bed by 9 but when Mom would come to check on us we'd just pretend we were asleep. Danny was really good at it, but I could always tell when he was pretending."

A hand brushes through his hair again.

"You really are his twin, Damian."

Damian opens his eyes and sits up as the boy, a teenager his own age, takes a startled step back. Jazz, yes, the woman he'd 'rescued', smiles warmly at him.

He's in a canopied bed, surrounded by rich fabrics and what looks to be purple-bricked walls. There's a green tinted window to his right. Bookshelves with old looking tomes lines the walls and a suit of armor stands by the door. He notes the mace in its hands. With any luck, it won't be welded to the gloves.

"Danyal is dead," he says shortly. Jazz's smile turns sad.

"Yes," she takes his hand. "I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. He was so brave—,"

Damian yanks his hand away. "No, he's not newly dead, he's been dead. For years."

Jazz shakes her head, that same sad condescending smile on her face. "No, Danny didn't die. He escaped the League. He told me all about you. He," her voice wobbles, "he loved you very much."

Damian's blood churns. "You're lying."

"He lived, and he was a hero, like you. He helped people. And then he became a King," Jazz says. She continues to smile, even as tears start to trail down her face. "Which makes you a prince."

She sounds, to quote Sam, fucking crazy. And now that he can see the manic gleam in her eyes, she looks it too. Damian shoots an incredulous glance at the boy, but he refuses to make eye contact.

Jazz stands up and opens her arms out, gesturing to the room. "This was his home. And now it's yours."

Damian weighs his responses. Remembers Dick's lessons in diplomacy.

And still chooses the nuclear option: "If you know of the League then you know what it means to be the heir of Ra's Al Ghul. I will not be made into a prisoner and if you attempt to keep me here, you will be sorry."

The boy mouths "the league" to himself, questioningly, but Jazz doesn't so much as flinch.

"I know this is a long to take in," she says, voice dripping with sympathy. "But I promise, it will all make sense, and in time you'll come to adjust. Let's let Damian rest, Tucker."

The boy, Tucker, looks at him now with a troubled gaze, but when Jazz opens the door he reluctantly walks out. Jazz pauses in the doorway.

"Damian," she says, that same far off tone in her voice, her back to him. "Danny used to tell me about the League's code. Hunting down those that threatened its power without ceasing. Ensuring every target was dead. No mission left uncompleted. No failure tolerated."

Jazz looks back at him, a small serene smile on her face. "I'm going to avenge our brother Damian. I'm going to hunt down every last one of them. Without ceasing. Without failure. You have my word."

She cocks her head at him thoughtfully. "Danny loved macadamia nut muffins. I'll pick us up some on my way back. A welcome home present."

She strides out the door. Damian waits to hear a lock turn, but there is nothing but the sound of her fading footsteps. He waits until the noise has fully faded before he attempts to stand, glaring at his legs until they sluggishly begin to respond.

A squeaking noise erupts from the far wall and he watches in disbelief as the suit of armor creakily moves to stand in front of the door. Sufficiently positioned, it ceases all movement once more. However, now Damian can make out the two glowing red dots staring straight through the slits of its helm.

Damian's lip curls up in a wicked snarl that Jason calls feral as it becomes clear the guard is not going to attack but rather...guard. He heads for the window instead and stops short as he gets his first peek of the outside.

The window is not tinted green at all. Instead, for as far as he can see, there is an unnatural, electric green. Blobs of more of the green float and drift through the expanse, as if he is trapped in a lava lamp.

Here, Superman won't be able to hear his heartbeat.

"Where am I?" Damian asks, staring out into the void. This whole time he's been angry, and embarrassed, and annoyed. But for the first time since this ordeal began, he feels afraid.

"Where am I?"

Dp writing prompt:

Eldrich Horror AU.

Danny makes a friend from another town as Phantom. But like. This kid is absolutely oblivious to Phantom's ghost status. A complete supernatural null. He sees Danny and it just like "Oh hey kid with wig, fake werewolf fangs and contacts. Why you in that funky suit?" I'm talking, he can't see Danny's glow. He's confused by other people's weird looks and avoidance. The kid's as sweet as a puppy, what the heck was wrong with these people? He loves the cold and hates the heat so is always blasting the AC anyways (to the point where he develops subconscious urges to hang with his friend Danny any time it gets too hot). He doesn't feel anything off about Danny. Hears no echo in his voice. No prickling unease. No blurred edges to his form. Nothing.

He's not just faking calm like Sam and Tuck sometimes have to, he is calm.

So Danny starts making trips to this other town to be able to feel "normal" in his ghost form. Starts wearing street clothes and just hanging out with his buddy as Phantom. Without the loser stigma associated with Fenton. It's a therapy he didn't know he needed.

Till one day, something happens. Perhaps his secret is revealed to someone close to him that lashes out. Maybe he gets really hurt and doesn't want anyone to know just how bad it is.

Either way, he goes to this new friend in a state of panic. Forgets to change forms, or possibly can't by the time he gets there.

But the biggest thing that makes his friend freak out isn't the blood, or the crying, etc. (although those are concerning, too). It's that his friend isn't wearing the wig, fangs and contacts he's come to associate with Danny.

He's obviously Danny. There is no question about that. But whatever happened was so bad that his friend forgot to bring a big part of his persona/psyche with him.

Now that was terrifying.

Updates

Got a good surprise coming with Ecto-Implosion now that I got my writing partner last week. We are cooking up something really good!

Also, story is a bit at a standstill for now. I'm doing more overall world-building and will be writing out Part 1 of Arc 1, but it's been difficult maintaining motivation. Got deadlines in work coming up by the end of this month and some other mild concerns, but it'll work themselves out hopefully.

Hopefully more Samael art too, he's become my favorite DP OC. And also coming up with some very despicable villains too.

Also, Zarc has been flooding my psyche now, I will likely draw more memes with him based on an old story/AU that was scrapped.

Just the overall progress. Prologue comic is still in the works, but I'm waiting a couple days before returning to the script with fresh eyes of what I want to include and what not to include. Might change some minor things here and there. Main goal is to still finish it before June 2024.

a list of Marauder/Jily AUs that I’m sure have been done before but have also been floating around my head ceaselessly and relentlessly so I’m putting them here to try and get some peace:

- Dead Poets Society AU — inevitably with wolfstar AND Jily because what is DPS without its ridiculously heavy-handed gay subtext. HEAVY Marauders focus here. (unclear who would be Robin Williams’s character but working on that)

- Pirates of the Caribbean AU — feat. Captain Sirius Black Sparrow and Sn*pe as Cutler Beckett, NOT Norrington because Norrington deserves better. also Peter the talking parrot

- New Girl AU — Marlene as Cece, obviously, and Lily as a slightly-less-bumbling Jessica Day. also James as a law school dropout somehow just...fits. Can’t entirely decide who’s Schmidt/Winston/Coach but we’ll get there.

- James and Sirius own a private detective agency AU — kind of Psych but not faking being a psychic. or maybe faking being a psychic? but I’m not making Lily or Remus cops so would focus more on (ahem) client relations.

- Peaky Blinders AU — the Marauders are the most fearsome gang in Birmingham...(yes I know the Peaky Blinders were real people but I’m just shamelessly trying to steal the show’s aesthetic)

What's your opinion on "Phantom Planet"? Are you going to treat it as canon?

Of course! It’s part of the family!

I went into the finale knowing it wasn’t a well-liked episode, but honestly I was expecting worse (Entire Ghost Zone being destroyed or closed off forever, Sam getting ghost powers, Danny permanently losing his, Ghost Zone being relocated to another planet, everyone living in harmony with ghosts, another mass memory erasure, ghosts coming to life as humans, etc.)

“Phantom Planet" wasn’t exactly thrilling (I’ve seen a LOT of “Asteroid about to destroy Earth” plots, and using it for the final episode possibly wasn’t the best way to go), but it wasn’t necessarily a BAD episode. It was no “Cheese and Crockers”, at least.

I’m not sure any series finale can be as disappointing to me as the one for the seventh book of the Children of the Lamp series. Also, Jack finally got it through his head that Vlad was no friend of his, so I really liked that! And Vlad’s evil plan worked (mostly), so props to him.

I can totally understand why people who had been watching the series as it aired may have been disappointed by the finale. But because I’m a late arrival and I’d HEARD it was going to be bad, I went into it bracing myself for that. It’s a little disappointing in context because its existence means that Valerie’s plotline never received a proper canon ending, but honestly, as an episode, I don’t find it as bad as the phandom makes it out to be.

You’re welcome to take my opinion with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that I seem to be one of the sole people who enjoys Danny having character flaws and making mistakes and fixing problems by himself instead of a deus ex machina character appearing just in time to save his butt really likes “Livin’ Large”. I don’t have any problems with the finale so huge that I can’t handle them and choose to deny its existence, so yeah, I treat it as canon.

Do I actively avoid reading ‘fics that specifically say they don’t treat ”Phantom Planet” as canon? Mmhm. That’s just my personal tastes. Some people turn to fandoms because they like to see the characters in AUs. No shame in that! But I like canon, and as a writer myself, I can’t help but feel a liiiiii’l insulted when someone says, “This creator’s ideas are bad and my ideas are so much better” or “Reaffirming major worldbuilding details they confirmed as canon years ago means a creator doesn’t know their own creation anymore”.

This “praise canon” view is something I am actually struggling to overcome, because it’s a biased and limited way of looking at things. But I do believe in respecting those who spend their time and creative energy to give us wonderful things. I will probably always believe in that. I don’t have any problems with someone saying, “I personally didn’t like the way this is done, so I’m going to alter it a bit”. I simply don’t like someone saying, “This is just bad and horrible in general and anyone who actually liked it should be mocked”.

I favor building on what canon gave us. Devising behind-the-scenes explanations that solve plot holes. Not just tossing things out all together, except as a very last resort when despite your best efforts, you can’t rectify it. I work with moral grays, remember? I believe there’s good to be found in everything (everything creative-wise, anyway; I’m not going to defend abuse).

I have a lot of respect for people who try to balance everything canon gives us. I raise my eyebrows at those who, in my mind, don’t look like they even tried to be faithful to the source. I understand that I’m only seeing the fruits of their labors and not what went on in their heads, so they may have justifiable reasons for eliminating certain bits of canon.

To be brutally honest, I’m invested in writing my own stuff. I don’t always have the time or desire to invest myself in someone else’s. Thus, I prefer the easy option: reading fanfics that treat most everything as canon, so I don’t have to constantly remember, “Okay, what were those ten and a half episodes they said aren’t canon in this work?” I’m sure people look at my stuff the same way! Let’s be real, my stuff gets pretty complicated.

(Note: You guys know how much I love BookwormGal’s FOP fanfic, “Never Had a Friend Like Me”. I’m fine with authors saying, “This is an alternate future and none of the events after this point in the show will be treated as canon”. That’s easy to remember! I only struggle when it comes to cherry-picking tons of episodes that in my mind have no reason to be singled out. If you can justify your reasons for cutting something and just generally prove that you tried to work with canon, I’ll support you even if you’re cutting something I happen to like. But if your reason is merely, “I didn’t like the fact that this character made this choice or expressed this personality trait”, then I feel a little :/ . I enjoy stories that are like, “This is an in-character story about what life might be like if a different choice had been made”, but I don’t like, “I thought this was dumb, so I’m going to ‘fix this’ by writing this character out of character". Some people enjoy that. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. It’s just not my tastes.)

Like I said, some people turn to fandoms in search of AUs. Plenty of people like AUs! I’m rarely one of them. I only look to a fandom because I LIKED a show. If I’m bothering to search for fanfics when there’s so much else I could be doing, I must have REALLY liked canon. Thus, it disappoints me when people choose to disregard massive chunks of canon- but only if I feel like they didn’t try. Again, as long as I feel like you gave it a try, I’m okay with you cutting things.

So I’m totally biased when I see a DP ‘fic that says, “No PP” or “AU”. It’s an instant turn-off for me: I make a judgment that this person “didn’t try” right then. So, I’ll look at the word count. If it’s a high word count, I take it more seriously (I almost never read anything under 1,000 words per chapter). Lots of words means work, which means trying, which earns my respect. If the word to chapter ratio impresses me, I read the summary again. Spelling or capitalization errors will turn me away. If everything looks good, I check the character list. Anything other than canon or pairings I find plausible will make me hesitate; ‘fics that look like they’re purely shippy I often avoid. But, if I’m intrigued, then I’ll give it a try!

I only do this if I’m out looking for ‘fics. I’m a busy person, so I’m not always in the mood to read someone else’s stuff when I could be writing my own. Mostly, someone I trust would have to recommend an AU ‘fic to me as good before I look into it. Or the ‘fic involves a character that I like, since I tend to go for obscure characters such as H.P. and Youngblood. Within reason, I’m willing to be lenient when those two are involved.

Not everyone holds this opinion! I respect the right of others to be unhappy with and express unhappiness about the way something was done. But as for me, I have to be severely bothered by something in order to not accept it as canon. And really, there’s only one thing that could ever bother me that much: Breaking continuity.

There’s a writing rule that states, “Your world can play by whatever rules you want it to, but the events of your story need to be consistent with the rules you establish”. Every time I talk about suspension of disbelief, this is what I’m referring to. Let’s cite, say… “Milo Murphy’s Law” as an example. When I approach a new show, I happily expect to be greeted by a world with its own rules. I’ll play along with you until you betray my trust. I can totally suspend my disbelief for a family curse inspired by the real-life concept of Murphy’s Law without batting an eye. I can’t suspend my disbelief for Milo being weighed down by a stack of paper in his backpack, but not by a 20,500-pound anchor.

So, my devotion with canon may be based in my love for writing; it’s a “me” thing. Continuity is one of the most important things to me, and it’s very difficult for me to like a cartoon that utterly lacks it (except in the case of something like “Tom and Jerry” and “Spongebob” that have an “ageless” vibe to them, where time and episode order doesn’t matter at all, since S.B. is in the working phase of his life, and not in school and occasionally having school vacations).

For this reason, the FOP episodes I don’t accept as canon are ones such as “Perfect Nightmare” (which broke rules like not being able to wish for good grades) and “The Fairy Beginning” (which broke tons of established canon). “Phantom Planet” didn’t break visible canon as far as I’m concerned. While I do have a couple of grievances (Tucker being made mayor as a high schooler and statues of Danny being set up all over the world), it’s allowed to stay.

For the most part, I treat anything that doesn’t shatter canon as, well… canon! I’m a psych major. Law of parsimony and Occam’s razor run in my blood! If it ain’t absolutely broke after you’ve tried your hardest to fix it, don’t toss it!

So the biggest thing I wanted to do with this retelling of PQ was give each school two representatives, neither being a party member from their game. (I also wanted one male and one female rep per school) The other is I wanted to rework the way the narrative juggled characters into a more manageable cast more reminiscent of the Etrian Odyssey Untold games.

With that in mind, the total roster is 6 characters, with 5 in the party and 1 navigator. (Note that for the purposes of the AU, Rei is doing the map-drawing and not the “protagonist”)

Eventually I decided to just do 3/4/5 because I couldn’t think of how to incorporate concepts from 1/2, given the nature of the Labyrinth in Q. But part of these characters is that they’ve all lost most of the memories of their lives, similarly to Rei and Zen, for reasons connected to their combined unconscious desire to stay in the Labyrinth forever.

Rei and Zen are the Yasogami reps, and meant I couldn’t add any concepts or ideas from 4 to the game. Which is fine, I probably would have snuck Konishi in if they weren’t already there. The biggest change is that they’ve been split into two different character slots, with Rei acting as the party’s Navigator and Zen’s toolkit changing into a more direct Magic DPS set, though he still uses a crossbow (though now only one). They also both have proper Persona’s now. (Before you ask: Zen’s persona manifests similarly to Marie’s in that it’s a way of reconciling his deity powers with his human form and psyche) Rei’s arcana is the Hermit while Zen has Death.

The biggest addition, and the character I basically wrote the AU for, was Unit #024 from Arena, using the name “Niko”. Though she died and her memories/Plume of Dusk was absorbed by Labrys, her dying wish to meet the “mother” of the Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons gained the attention of Chronos and brought her to the Labyrinth. She’s the team’s tank, using Broadswords in battle. Her connection to Aigis is why when her soul was given human form in the Labyrinth, she gained a Gekkoukan High uniform. She has the Strength arcana.

Kaoru* is a new character designed to be more-or-less purely an audience window into things. He’s one of the Lost, his psyche having been eaten at some currently-unknown point in the P3 storyline. But instead of being taken to Tartarus, his psyche wound up in the Labyrinth. He uses a Spear in battle and has the most well-rounded stats, though with an emphasis on Physical DPS. The Labyrinth taking the form of a school, his psyche corrected by putting him in his Gekkoukan uniform. He has the Fool arcana.

Shiho (Suzui) shows up in the Labyrinth during her coma, her still-living connection to death and wish to die having brought her there. While she’s not in a coma for long in her game, there’s also no real time passing in Q so it’s fine. She uses throwing knives in battle and has an emphasis on Debuffs and Crowd Control. She still wears the Shuujin uniform she wore during her attempt. She’s the Hanged Man arcana.

Taiki (Takase) is the last character and one I puzzled over for a while. While his death should have been normal and let him pass on, his soul wound up in the Labyrinth for reasons unknown, though possibly because Chronos wanted to remind Zen of his duty. In battle, he uses Maces/Blunt weapons, but his spells and such focus on Healing and Buffing the party. While he didn’t go to Shuujin, his soul’s strong connection to Kamikawa lead to him adopting the uniform of her school. He’s the Tower arcana.

All non-Igor residents of the Velvet Room have been pulled from their duties, this time including Justine and Caroline as well as the Demon Painter, Belladona, and Nameless. The Belladona and Nameless act sort of like the Guildkeepers in EOU, giving the player randomized quests and allowing them to gain advantages in battle. (Belladona sings them a special song, giving them recurring HP/SP boosts among other things; Nameless offers them Equations which allow them to predict and prevent/counter enemy attacks) The Demon Painter can paint them a portrait if they give him the right “inspiration.” These portraits can provide a persistent buff until it’s overwritten, unlike Belladona/Nameless effects which only last until they exit a dungeon. Meanwhile, Justine and Caroline replace Elizabeth as the ones handling requests while she deals with the Nurse’s office.
