i actually think i have some sort of brain damage from chapter 403 because now ive taken my bkdk obsession to a whole new degree. like, i was insane before, but now i feel as if i should be genuinely put into an asylum.
ive gone through a full on awakening.
before this chapter i refused to believe that bkdk would become canon/hinted bc like its wishful thinking. but now? ive fallen into the fucking deep end. i am of full belief that bkdk will become canon or at least be hinted bc horikoshi is cooking something and im so glad im not the only one to see it.
there is no way that man doesnt know what hes doing. bkdks entire arc has been fucking perfect and this man just keeps BUILDING UP. like all this talk about feelings, and how bkdk have never really spoken about them to eachother before??? this is like, building up to a fucking love confession i swear, because katsuki DIED for izuku, and izuku cant control his heart when it comes to katsuki, and like… what other explaination is there? atp i consider it canon that theyre in love with each other.
and the other most likely ship that i thought was gonna be canon, izuocha, just is not feasible. its not like i dislike the ship, no hate to it at all, but making it canon would be so fucking harmful to izuku and ochakos characters and we dont talk about that enough. it would a dissapointing, flat conclusion with barely any build up and itd be the bland, predictable formula. like, ochako has already basically wrapped up her thing with izuku with that entire fight with toga. shes admitted herself that her crush on izuku was more admiration than anything of massive substance. and dont even get me started on izuku. barring some fluster and embarrassed blushing in the early seasons, this boy has NOT reciprocated AT ALL. its actually ridiculous. izuku has been focused on like, two things only: hero work, and kacchan. izuku does not show ANY romantic feeling to ochako whatsoever.
surely, surely if horikoshi were to make this canon, he’d put in a little more effort? add some more chemistry, more development, more than just ‘boy meets girl. blush and get shy. little crush. get married. the end’?
that is bad storytelling, and horikoshi is anything but a bad storyteller. this guy adds foreshadowing YEARS before the chapter. horikoshi is INSANE when it comes to character + relationship + plot development. if horikoshi throws all that out the way, and makes izuocha canon, id be extremely, extremely disappointed. not because i hate the ship, but because itd be out of nowhere, disregard practically ALL development, and be nauseatingly dissatisfying.
talking of which, for the entire day ive been thinking about the foreshadowing for bkdk.
there. is. so. fucking. much. it feels like everytime i read like a new section of the manga, their relationship is described in the most frutti tutti rainbow gay way. im sorry, shigafo, did you just say that katsuki is closer to izuku than ANYONE else? excuse me, aizawa, did you just describe them as pair, a pair that the class revolves around? dont even mention the shit that izuku and katsuki say referring to each other. i cant even choose one to add in here, but every out of context bkdk quote has like these SEVERE more-than-platonic undertones, especially when you consider their past and their development. i feel like horikoshi has been doing some fucking insane foreshadowing for something MORE.
yk, i keep on thinking about how in the double spread in 403, the words ‘the beginning’ are displayed right over bkdk, as they find each other. call me delusional, but that has to be on purpose. i also keep on thinking about izukus green and orange gloves in so many official arts, and the light in both their eyes when they see each other, and the way theyre both always observing the other, never speaking about how they feel directly.
their relationship is just so, so……. and i feel like the only next step is for them to talk. just. fucking. talk. its been hinted at for so long, and horikoshi is doing SOMETHING.
them simply being together would be the most satisfying, developed, beautiful ending.
if they arent canon, i will die. ill say it now. bkdk canon. there is too much proof. as a writer, i know for a fact that i write everything for a REASON. why would horikoshi write this, if he wasn’t going to do anything with it?
bkdk will be canon. i dont care if i sound insane, or get proved entirely wrong. i now fully believe that the last page of the manga will be bkdk at a theme park eating crepes.
thank you chapter 403 for driving me off the rails.

re my last rb: my ranking of nami's favourite partners for general illegal activities whenever they hit a new island, pre & post-timeskip, including but not limited to:
swindling
scamming
small-scale grifting
gambling (& therefore cheating at gambling)
small-scale heisting (ones that require infiltration or more subtlety than usual)
ok let's go
pre-ts (pre-grand line):
zoro - it's so fun to get dramatic with him. he's very perceptive, he always plays along no matter what, he knows when to push the intimidation (and is very good at it. eternal attack dog privilege ftw) & when to dial back. he also knows nami best/longest out of them, though that quickly stops making a difference in most contexts
usopp - OBVIOUSLY!! he is quite literally perfect in every grift you can think of. the only problem is that he starts fumbling when the other party at, say, the casino gets a lil too threatening/seems to be catching on. whereas nami (& zoro) chase the adrenaline he doesn't like to toe the line TOO much.
sanji - automatic 3rd b/c she gets annoyed with how he can't function when a hot woman so much as breathes his way (she doesn't even scam other women! not when she can help it!) or if it's a grift that requires him to get the least bit touchy with her. but he IS objectively GOOD at it.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA
400. luffy - she does not let him grift OR gamble with her. subtlety of a fucking toddler. derails every single grift/mini heist. NEGATIVE poker face, ESPECIALLY when he's actively trying. when she's forced to bring him along though he always notices something she hasn't because he is bizarrely perceptive like that, he just doesn't really care. unfortunately this also means he doesn't always care to inform her about what he observes. (luffy: "but you told me to keep quiet!!") he also has really good luck so if he manages to stay quiet and not attract attention he can act as a good luck charm. however that is impossible
(later) pre-ts:
usopp - everything stays the same AND he's getting better at keeping his cool. what's not to love. this is their bonding activity
zoro - nami has learned the hard way that they both CANNOT take themselves seriously for long when they are required to get touchy. he's also demoted bc he refuses to part with his swords, which is really quite inconvenient if she wants him to be her partner for, say, a gala dinner they're sneaking into.
sanji - still 3rd but a closer 3rd now!! stay strong sansan!! more on earlier, grifting with him isn't as effortless/fun as it is w usopp or zoro but that is in no way due to lack of skill on his part. he's not just good at landing a cover; he's strategic like zoro and flexible like usopp. plus, he just FITS into a high class setting with the seamlessness that neither usopp nor zoro have which makes him very, very useful for grifts requiring more formality. however due to his also aforementioned flaws he cannot hit top 2 im (not) sorry...... ALSO! this is partly bc im so sanamipilled but i do think that she's grown to enjoy the touchiness sometimes - and now she can admit it to herself. 's a fun little excuse for her to indulge sanji a bit, especially if their mark for the night is easy
robin - she is last bc she is usually simply not interested in all that. however she will creep people out with her general aura when needed!
post-ts:
usopp - everything is just so easy with him x2. they fall back into their dynamic and it's perfect and even BETTER than before because they're both a little out of practice after 2 years, but they've also both got new tricks up their sleeves. they don't get as many chances TO grift anymore in the new world though. always onto the next big adventure. plus now she's notorious enough that people actually RECOGNISE her in bigger cities/towns (she's not too happy about this)
sanji - he's been promoted :) but also demoted especially freshly post-ts bc of fishman island related crimes.
zoro - he doesn't let nami convince him into grifting with her anymore :-(( but if nami still requires someone to stand menacingly behind her as she extorts some rando then [mbappe voice] He Will Be There No Matter What
luffy stays the same :p
chopper is too young to be engaging in these activities & franky and brook are wayy too conspicuous. jinbei just joined they do not have the time for that shit yet. also i havent read beyond wano

Hey y’all- I know I’ve been gone a WHILE lol. Life’s been hectic and fun. Recently had the urge to write. I jotted down some notes; would y’all read this?
Ok so, for context, last night I had a weird dream about this exact scenario and felt the insatiable urge to write it down. It wasn’t Eddie in the dream (it was a diff actor who I literally had never thought about before? Like weird but I imagined Eddie in it when I woke up so here you go):
- Eddie is high key obsessed w you
- But in a cute way? Scary way? You really are unsure
- Like you know he has a crush on you- you’ve known it for years
- He makes it incredibly obvious. He’s a dork, so he’s not great at flirting, but he constantly tells everyone how awesome you are
- Reader is like; really cool? I imagine college age
- Like, he goes around campus just openly being a bit weird but mostly harmless
- Like, shows up to your sporting events (maybe cheer? Volleyball? Softball? Idk man I was a dancer and in colorguard- lmk what yall want) in a t shirt he made- like kinda creepy (but like I said- mostly harmless- just a little odd)
- Rumors spread about how he’s planning to sacrifice you or something
- You find it odd at first, but then you start observing him and see that it’s kinda genuine
- You eventually warm up to him, allowing him to become your friend
- The two are friends for a while, not really hanging out, but like, if he’s somewhere you are (which you eventually realize is more often than not), you’ll make friendly conversation
- He drives you home from class one day bc it’s storming
- Slowly, you start to realize that, while he’s going about it wrong, he’s actually really sweet
- You guys end up at a party
- He’s literally being your scary guard dog (or option b- the one from my dream- he’s making a complete fool of himself saying how cool and awesome and pretty you are. He’s a lil stoned)
- You’re laughing (at him and with him simultaneously) and having a great time
- He offers you a little schweed, and you accept. You two go into a secluded area to smoke
- You have a realization that- man, this guy is kind of adorable
- You lean in to kiss him, but he backs away, mouth hanging open like a fish
- “Stop freaking out so I can kiss you!” You laugh
- “Give me a minute- I need to make sure Im not dead, dying, or somehow overdosing on weed” he said, taking some deep breaths
- “You can’t overdose on weed, jackass.”
- “Yeah well this doesn’t feel real- give me a sec.”
- “I’ll be right here.” You laugh, rubbing his thigh gently
- You kiss and oh my god it is the sweetest and spiciest kiss ever
- Light schmut insues (WHIMPERING)
- He says he loved you during this, then sputters and says you don’t have to say it back or anything- sorry I’m just rambling
- “It’s ok- give me a minute. You’ve known how great I am for a long time, but I’m just learning how great you are now.”

you were on vc with your best friend. for context, you had a crush. a MASSIVE crush on a boy named robby. you had liked him for 2 years now, the only bad thing? you guys were barely friends. you guys had a class together, and he would always talk to you (hed call u weird when u declared you were spiderman.).. all until you left school for second semester. you hadnt seen robby in about 6 months, but you still liked him (attachment issues go hard). u guys used to text, too. itd mostly be u texting with double chats and him replying in a dry way... but u still liked him AHAHA, so 2 days ago.. you asked your friend for his number...

you texted, and he replied right away

after that, you guys had texted for 5 minutes, asking things like "hru" or "wyd" until he finally said

your eyes widened seeing this, and you were a pussy, so you said

you start to rant ab it to your friends, balling ur eyes out as u do, you were in ur head about it, letting it get to you. your hands trembled as u typed about it to your friends. you had always been insecure about your personality, not wanting ppl to see u as too much or crazy. so u finally replied to him.

its been 15 since youve been on delivered (or read, he didnt have read recipts on)
u desperately wanted to talk to him so u sent anotyher message

when he replied, you got so happy u forgot about the fact that you were crying about him the night before. but the thing is, he would leave u on read the whole day, and it stressed u out.
everyone had been telling u to just tell him who u were, and to stop being a pussy. hell, even snap ai wasnt on your side. so u write a paragraph, wanting to send it to him

you didnt know how to feel, you wanted to cry. you were in ur head about this whole situation and u couldnt help but overthink. so u turn to your best friends, wanting-- no, needing reassurance. they continue to tell u its okay and that he wont break your heart. but you cant help it, that feeling. that feeling of your heart sinking, the feeling of the lump that forms in your throat, the feeling where you just want to feel better. but you cant. you were paranoid. you were tearing up. but you forced yourself not to cry, u didnt wnat to be a crybaby, but u couldnt help it. the tears had already formed and started to fall, your vision fogging up and your eyelashes wet. you couldnt believe u thought ur lifew could be like a wattpad love story. you were cracking your knuckles and picking at the skin around your cuticles, something u did when u were stressed. you then went to bed, hoping everything would be okay.
the next morning u wake up. the first thing u do is check every other social media and dm before his, you had a feeling he was gonna make u cry (again).
when u finally open the text, your whole expression lights up.
"I mean I suspected it and I am personally fine with the lie you told and yea I can forgive u but as you know I am a dry texter"
you were so happy. u couldnt believe it. you quickly change his contact name back from "oh" to "ROBBYYY! <33" and you smiled so big your jaw started to hurt

What do you think about a deaf billy AU?
where Neil moved his family to the middle of nowhere Indiana because he knows 80s bumfuck nowhere doesn’t have a lot of support for disabled ppl and hates his son (as we all know)
At first billy tries to hide it, he had gotten used to learning how to read lips and make inferences on what people were saying, if he happened to miss something? He’d just brush it off, saying he wasn’t paying attention.
Billy might have a slight deaf voice, Neil probably came along with his “no son of mine” spiel so Billy had to learn how to speak as Neil thought was “normal”.
Steve begins to notice something different about Billy; slowed reaction time, really focusing on people’s faces, etc, and brings it up to Joyce.
Joyce, concerned, waits until the next time Billy is in her store to ask if everything is okay. Billy panics, he thought he was doing perfect, if he doesn’t his dads gonna kill him, so he very quickly excuses himself out of the store.
Maybe some further concerned Steve and Joyce? Teaming up to help out Billy? 🥹
i am into all of this. i wanna say way back in the early days of the fandom there was a deaf!billy fic i read.... or it was steve. or it was neither of them and im thinking of another fandom entirely lmfao anyway!
this would put their little staredown at tinas in a whole new context...honestly it puts a lot of billy scenes in new context that boy loves to look and watch and observe.
i would also like to bring in cali bros argilly and say that argyle and billy learned to sign together back home bc neil surely wasnt going to put billy in classes and surely not learn himself, maybe billy had teachers at school who helped? but argyle wanted to learn too since they were besties and he was really the only person billy could talk to after that. so when the hargroves move to indiana billys on his own again and since he doesnt want to out himself as being deaf and ask if anyone knows how to sign, he just pretends to be aloof and like he doesnt give a shit about what anyone says to him (which isnt like... untrue lol)
if he and max still have a bad relationship in this au maybe she hasnt bothered to learn how to sign either cuz like... why is she gonna need it to talk to billy? they dont talk period
steve calling billys name when hes not looking trying to get his attention and it never working so a lightbulb goes off in his head and he starts writing notes to see if that works and sure enough...
joyce picking up books from the library and learning very basic signs for the next time billy comes into the store. she's just trying to be polite but it still makes billy panicky that someone knows. ooooh if neil and billy come into the store one day and she overhears neil giving billy shit about not listening to him and how he needs to get his shit together etc etc and she immediately decides this man needs to be put down like she is not having it but she also knows theres not a whole lot she can do right now besides make her presence known and get him to back down.
steve helping billy out in the classes they share together and even in the classes they dont he finds a way to get notes from other people without letting them know its for billy, and billys constantly wondering how steve keeps pulling this off but steve wont reveal his secrets. them developing this silent language on the basketball court that makes them unbeatable... many thoughts many thoughts
idk how joyce and steve end up joining forces in all of this but i know they do!

Akari the T-rex, and her three Pteranodon siblings, Dawn, Barry, and Lucas, love going on the Dinosaur train pretty much every day.
Ingo and Emmet basically run a sort of... Sociology/physiology class, where the kiddos observe different dinosaurs and try to figure out why/how they do things ("i have a hypothesis!" as Buddy says in the show)
Ingo and Emmet have friends! like Skyla the microraptor, or Elesa the Dromiceiomimus!
pretty much everyone knows about Ingo and Emmet and thier love for battles. there are specific cars on the train to house small ones, but mostly its just done near the Train station. many dinosaurs try to test their strength against the twins.
Troodons are verrry smart! so once Ingo and Emmet meet a species they've never met before, and battle them, they immediately try to figure out an effective way to take them down (again, these are all friendly battles. its enrichment, if you will)
basically Ingo and Emmet can tag team pretty much anyone. if they've met the same species before.
this is getting long so more post eeby under the cut
so, the Dino train can travel thorough time, but there are some places, if the gate is not big enough, the the train cannot go through
that, however, does not mean a dinosaur cant go through =]
so basically Ingo doesn't remember how to leave the timezone he fell in (somewhere in the Pleistocene period) and Emmet cant get there bc the time tunnels (apparently that's what they are called in the show) are too small.
pearl clan, a group of Scimitar Cat (kinda like the saber tooth/Smilodon but their teeth are Much smaller.) take Ingo in after their Lady Sneasler carries him over
no one really knows what the heck ingo is, but they let him be warden of Sneasler. both clans are actually mammals in this one, with diamond clan being Beringian lions, (who, fun fact, might have been completely maneless! which is confusing considering the cold climate, but they might have been completely covered in thick fur...)
ingo chills there for a long while, until suddenly, out of the tiny time Tunnels (or space time distortions, as the Clans call them) a T-Rex appears. the group of Tigers called the Galaxy Team take her in and they occasionally meet up with the other clans.
a few days after Akari lands in the future (ha!) a bolt hits the nobles and they go into a frenzy. Akari is sent to take care of it.
the nobles are!
Kleavor- giant beaver (cut down trees) (they were the size of bears today!)
Lilligant- Scrophulariaceae (its a flower. its kinda sentient. don't ask.)
Arcanine- Dire wolf (but a big one. for context- Dire wolves are around the same size as a yukon wolf, which is 85 cm (~2.8 ft) tall.)
Electrode- a rock. (it'd be funny)
Avalugg- the ever approaching glacial movements. (melts and gives fresh water- that's why its a noble)
and the ride pokemon just to cover all basses:
Wyrdeer- caribou
Ursaluna- giant short-faced bear (VERY big. one and a half times the size of a grizzly bear. which is. Big.)
Basculegion- Quinkana (a crocodylian! big guys!! in the time period they are in, around 6 m (20 ft) long!! there is even some debate of them being 9 m long!!)
Sneasler- giant ground sloth (up to 3 meters long!)
Braviary- Haast's eagle (one of the larges known true raptors- but with a strangle small wingspan for its size- possibly up to 3 m)
i am well aware these guys would not live in the same area btw- but im talking about a universe with dinosaurs that built a time traveling train and magic- so...
anyway, eventually Akari and Ingo meet, and both are like "i have seen you before!!" but other than that vague feeling they don't really remember. she and Ingo talk a lot, and eventually come to the realization that the space time distortions (time tunnels) could lead them home.
Ingo instinctively knows that they should Not just. walk in one, and instead they chip away the the surrounding rock of one until ingo feels its Just the right size. for what, he isn't sure. he does think that there should be some shiny metal things coming out of it... but he doesn't know where to get that kind of material, so he doesn't bother with it.
one night, they are woken up by a sheer whistle, and then a horrible crash. Ingo rushes out to the Time tunnel to see a train completely derailed in front of it, tipped over onto its side.
a white Troodon stumbles out of it.

Casting My Opinions Into The Void: d20′s Neverafter ep 1+2
this is the first d20 campaign im going to be following live and i am excited enough to do a lil post each week or so about it. mostly bc recycling and adapting and retelling and retranslating old stories that “everyone knows” is my whole shit. like i got a degree in the study of ancient greek and roman civilization (classics). my whole thing is reading old myths and plays that “everyone knows” how they go and seeing what each author/translator brings to the table.
anyway i watched episodes 1 n 2 and i am excited and my observations are below
(like if you were really into the Sisters Grimm series as a kid and are similarly excited for this lol the modernized fairytale characters in that series are literally called “Everafters” and its because it’s really good shorthand for the audience. i see you brennan i see you)
normally ppl who do the whole ‘dark/horror/thriller fairytale’ thing fuck it up bc they think it’s about the shock value, or about seeing how nasty you can get with it, so I usually avoid them, but after bingewatching a kadrillion d20 campaigns, I trust brennan to do it right. you have to find the core value/crux of what is horrifying about the story and tease it out, and play with the symbolism and icons of the original story to reflect that. and brennan fuckin delivered.

folks, give a hand to the people who put detailed yet non-spoilery content warnings in the description. tbh dropout shows are setting the standard for sensitivity and inclusion in media. it’s so lovely to see a show w content warnings or pronouns put up onscreen and it just not be addressed. i am forever spoiled for any other kind of media tbh
at some point in the past, brennan found out he could make a really good realistic choking/gagging noise, and he has used it in every campaign since.
i appreciate the ‘scare off the meek early’ approach of it all.

also there really is a Jack in so many stories, i’m glad we’re addressing this. little shit gets up to so much trouble
it feels like I have seen so many tired rewritings of little red riding hood, even though I can’t think of any off the top of my head. it’s usually a sort of surface-deep ‘girl power!’ situation. i’ve never seen one like this. i LOVE it. it was terrifying. the fact that we all just sort of accept ‘barbarian’ as a normal dnd class is kind of wild tbh, i like exploring that rage and its source.

saying the actual nursery rhyme in the context of being the nursery rhyme is so powerful. i fully didn’t understand what was happening to nat king cole (v powerful) until he was gone.
also, herr drosselmeyer - fantastic get. you have to talk about the sugar plum fairy at some point and they already went in hard on her in acoc so i love that they were like you know what, it’s weird uncle time.
(context: herr drosselmeyer is clara’s eccentric uncle with a bunch of automatons and he gives her the nutcracker)

i’ve always liked endings that have the stepsisters reconciling w cinderella bc in the end they were also victims of abuse and it wasn’t the same or the same degree of abuse as cinderella but they were still constantly on thin ice
can you tell that i rewatched d20 live recently and sobbed at adaine and aelwyn’s ending?
Cinderella stabbing the fairy godmother with the broken heel of the shoe that symbolizes both the ending she was meant for and the life that she was forced into. Turning that into glass armor. dude.
The pumpkin carriage rotting bc the fairy godmother is trying to make the happily ever after stay exactly how it is forever but nature decays and time passes and she can’t acknowledge that without realizing both that her role is in the story is over and not only does cinderella not need her anymore, cinderella doesn’t want her anymore, and maybe never wanted her in the first place. 
When puss in boots was asked what he wanted in life and he just said ‘to be comfortable’ #relatable like I know all this is gonna end with him realizing the value of love and friendship over material goods and I 100% agree with that but i feel like this goal or some variation of it are v common today and not often addressed in stories like this
Pinocchio swearing - 10/10. Also how the fuck is Lou doing a Pinocchio voice that perfectly straddles the line between hilarious and annoying. It’s ridiculous enough to always be funny, but sustainable and varied enough that it doesn’t grate on you.
i think we’re getting into “all the princesses in all the stories are all sisters” territory and i for one am THRILLED

we learn in this adventuring party that the OG concept for lou’s pinocchio is that he snapped off his nose so he would be able to lie, which is AMAZING. i fully did not put that together.

Hello my angel!! Is your question just generally, like, what goes into worldbuilding for a royal/historical type of AU?
If yes then I'd love to tell you what I know--although it's like, very little lmao. The only royal AU I've written is in cinders (and war paint kind of, since that's a tie in), and I was woefully inexperienced when I wrote both.
But for in cinders, the story focused largely on class differences, so a lot of the world building I did was to supplement that point. Basically I had two main tasks:
Establish a recognizable hierarchy
Supply some detail to emphasize that hierarchy
And I think in general, the way we observe historical periods is through things like clothes, living/working conditions, and linguistic cues--so those were the places that I chose to supply the detail.
Establishing a hierarchy
Okay so to establish our ranking system, I basically just janked existing noble titles and ranks. I found this Wikipedia article, and narrowed everything down to the European titles as those are the ones I am most familiar with--and as in cinders is a Cinderella retelling and that is a European fairy tale.
Obviously our love interest Shouto was gonna be a prince, but I made sure to weave in other ranks as well to make it clear there was a peerage system at play. Bakugou became a Marquis, Asui become a Countess, Camie became a Lady (as a daughter of a minor noble like a Baron/Viscount might be referred to) etc.
I also wanted our poor Y/N to be at the bottom of the totem pole because I am a monster, so I also looked into the hierarchies among servants. I can't find the exact resources I used but I basically googled around to find out a) what typical castle servant roles were, like in this article, and b) what that reporting structure would have looked like, as in this article.
Scullery/kitchen girls are like, the lowest ranked (RIP) so Y/N got assigned that lmao.
Supplying the deets
Now that we have our vague hierarchy established, it's time to emphasize it! Like I said, historical periods (and class distinctions therein) are usually analyzed in terms of clothes, living/working conditions, and linguistic cues, so that's where I chose to add detail.
For clothes, I mainly drew attention to Y/N's low rank by how much she admired clothes that weren't her own. When she stole Lady Camie's dress, she narrates the "luxurious thickness of Lady Utsushimi’s skirts," implying her own skirts are thinner and more barren. Y/N's own clothing is described more in terms of its state and function: "You shook your head, grasping your soot-stained skirts and glancing meaningfully at her clean chair."
Shouto's clothes draw less of that distinction but still help set the fantasy/historical context. I basically gave him a bunch of historical buzzwords like breeches and doublet to show the period: "He wore a doublet in a blue color only one shade lighter than your own gown, and the high points of his starched collar curved up towards his sharp jawline," and "You noticed he was dressed plainly, a soft linen shirt, unadorned, tucked somewhat untidily into simple breeches."
In terms of living/working conditions, I emphasized Y/N's lack of means again by recounting a lot of her job duties: peeling vegetables, scrubbing pans, sweeping out the kitchen fire places, not exactly high-class stuff. I also put her and Ochako in a supply closet that doubled as a sleeping chamber to drive it home that wow, they poor af. For her sleeping arrangements, I gave her a straw pallet so poorly constructed that straw kept poking through and stabbing her in the back.
In contrast, Shouto's living situation is described with a mind to emphasizing how large and fancy all his shit is. He has rooms plural, and a ton of things to put in them: "The prince’s chambers spread out before you, so large they could fit the kitchens three times over. You looked to be in a sitting room, peppered with low tables and couches overstuffed with bright pillows. A large, ornate writing desk sat against one corner, covered in papers. On the far wall, a series of double doors lay open, leading deeper into his apartments. You caught a glance of a four postered bed deep within, covers dripping off the sides to lay crumpled on the floor like they had been kicked off in haste."
And lastly, linguistic cues! I don't know enough about upper class vs lower class speech in historical periods and also wasn't willing to invest huge amounts of time in this, but I did want to give some nod to a historical/fantasy setting with word choices that aren't quite modern.
If you've ever heard a Shakespearean insult, it's so clear that one of the major places modern English differs from something like Elizabethan English is insults. So when Y/N insults Kamiko, instead of having her call her a cuntwaffle or whatever choice phrase we might use today, she calls her a toad. Shouto asks if Y/N's mother has been called a dog, and Y/N replies with something like, no, a swine--as apparently back in the day people liked to toss animals around as insults.
I also just jammed a bunch of old-timey sounding phrases into everyone's speech, like perhaps and a bajillion forgive mes and until tomorrows. And I think even if a lot of the other speech sounds modern, those kinds of phrases still help highlight that the setting we are in is not 21st century.
Conclusion
Anyway all of this to say, when writing a historical/fantasy/royal AU like this one, you should focus on the elements that are key to your story--what ways of life are you detailing; commoners, adventurers, soldiers, nobility etc? Then, with that in mind, research key points of period expression unique to those ways of life: clothes, speech, living conditions, and sprinkle those details throughout!
I am also still a novice writer though, and I am a notorious skimper on details, so if anyone else has better tips please feel free to jump in!! Otherwise, I hope this helped!!

lmao okay SO
tip one: explore a building once. this is important because the more times you go to a place the more likely you are someones gonna see you and call the cops. the likely hood will vary, but best practice is go somewhere once, take pictures, and then leave
tip two: always be aware of location. if the building is next to main road or a hghway where lots of cars go by, youre more likely to get caught, so itd be best to walk up rather than driver and park, or even to go. also in rural areas keep in mind that its gonna take cops a good bit to get there, so if someone, especially a concerned white person, comes up and asks what youre doing? leave immediately and with haste.
tip three: always imploy observation of the area. are there closed doors, how clean are the windows, how tall is the grass. these are all things that can indicate habitation by people. also while breakig windows and graffiti are fun, only do so if its already been done and wont harm anything. also keep in mind structural integretity. if the roof looks like itll fall in, keep your ears open and stick close to exists and doorways.
the charges!
honestly, the charges werent that bad since it was just trespass and trespassing is a class b misdmeaner, but the cop did try to pin me for burglary (which is a felony and would get me put in jail and retrict my right to vote). if i was not a short little white person with boobs, i probably wpuld have been charged worse. i got caught, i didnt leave l, the cops showed up 45 minutes later, i get put in hand cuffs and into a squad car. the officer tries to tell me im being detained for burglary, i argue and say no burglary has occured, ive taken nothing, he says well you still changed the doorknob locks (another story for another time), i say the original door knobs are still on the property, we end the convo and i spend a night in a concrete and cold as shit holding cell and get bailed out for 2000 dollars. i hire a lawyer, he has the court date post pones till august and gets me a plea deal where im on probation for a year and have to pay the court like 1000+ dollars and do 50 hours community service over those twelve months. fast forward to now, ive narrowed down the original amount down to like 400+ and ive got like one more session of community service and i can be done early because i got lucky and make good tips and the minimum amount of community service required where im at is 16 a month. but its just giving free labor to the community recycle center so. meh. OH also onces a month i meet with a probation officer, we chat for a lil bit, she asks me if ive done and substances, i say no because thats the truth and also because while on probation youre wisconsin sobar, she asks if ive had any contact with police, i tell her no, and then we set next months appointment and i go on my merry little way. easy breezyy. the conscequences are manageable if you get lucky and have a job that pays you enough and your living expenses are low enough

I like how when Thomas first meet Grace, he is clearly attracted by her beauty. But immediately after that Thomas started to fall for Grace's personality. Especially in 1x5.
I know this is so out of context but I can't help but to think that possibly Michael could have a slight crush on Grace.... I know this is way off since we never see it but somehow Gina and Grace has the same classy aura just complete opposite personalities. Wonder what Tommy would think about that 🤭

I don't think I'm good at any type of analysis, I'm rather observing and trying not to dive into symbolism and that 'guessing game or assumptions' too much because sometimes it's overwhelming. Also, I love to read (and re-read) and reblog ANY of @nomdeguerreblogs analysis and I keep finding myself on her page over and over again. Kind of my safe place to think about PB in a deep way. She's not in the fandom now and I can clearly see why :( I'm missing her thoughts about the show and her blog is definitely an inspirational notebook to me. It takes me to the depths of thought about PB which I'm lacking these days. Sorry for this side 'sorrow-love' note. :)
Well, Michael. Looks like he's a version of pre-war Tommy in some way. So it was something that used to unite them. I think they actually love the upper-class women (as I recall on the wedding Michael was with a girl from Grace's side, not even have to mention May and Tatiana for Tommy) and maybe for them it represents a lack of need to do the things the way they do and a chance to escape their past. Because they are not so bad in nature actually and in the beginning they both wanted to "do the right thing" and were starving for stability and wealth. I also see high self-esteem (and it's not bad) and their understanding they don't belong to where they were born. There's not enough space for their personal growth.
Sooo, Gina and Grace are very well educated. They have sharp minds, self-confidence and self-respect as well. Both know how to behave themselves. Intellect is a tempting thing of course, but it doesn't mean that all educated women are smart and interesting. And in them I can see an ability to think for themselves (I can say the same about May and Tatiana). So there's no surprise Michael and Tommy were attracted to classy women. Because they saw like-minded individuals in them.
Maybe Michael had some attraction to Grace. A little bit. To her appearance. But let's not forget he didn't see Grace without Tommy and before Tommy's decision to get married. He didn't have a chance to know her well to start thinking about her like someone who's not Tommy's fiance. So it would be kind of stupidity to allow himself to develop his sympathy further even if there was any.
In my head someone who actually had a crush on Grace is Finn. Just imagine little boy in the Garrison who's getting some sweet attention from a pretty barmaid who treats him fondly in a sister's way, makes nonalcoholic drinks for him but yet she's not a sister. And a few years later there's a teenage Finn with all his puberty issues. Loool. A weird and a sweet thing at the same time.
As long as there's is no danger coming from Finn or Michael, I think Tommy would have been flattered in the both cases. In a "yeah-I-know-Grace-is-that-much-attractive" and "but-you-bunch-of-fuckers-all-you-can-do-is-envy-me-because-she-chose-me-not-you-ehehehe" way. He was very proud of her.
PS. But I have some drafts about two scene haunt me. I just need to take a good grab on it to finish. Sometimes I feel the urge to wait before I public that stuff. Because I've done this before in a rush and after that I found myself doubting my own thoughts and arguing with myself (echoes of my answer about Lizzie).

Okay so i'm really stuck right now and i need some help. i'm trying to write a first chapter but its actually really hard. Everytime i write one im never happy with it and always remake it. I have 7 remakes of a first chapter just sitting in my docs. I figured I'd ask you for help because you always have the best first chapters and im always in awe while reading. How do you do so well establishing characters and dynamics in the first chapter?
First off, thank you for praising my work, that makes me really happy🥰
Second, this is going to be really long because I might ramble lol. So let me start off by saying that writing the first chapter is always tricky, but think about what's causing it to be tricky. For me, it is always the start of the chapter. Staring at the document and wondering how to start something is always hard.
7 remakes though! You are determined, which is a good thing honestly. This means you love the idea of your story but are having a difficult time trying to put it into words that you enjoy. If it's the relationships that are in the chapter that are causing the problem? Here's the longest answer to that lol.
Establishing the characters and dynamics can be as simple as put those funky little friends in a situation and see how it goes lol. Set the character personalities and who they would mesh well within the friend group. I'm going to use random bits of my stories to show examples to try and get my thoughts in way that can help you better.
For The Underground, I wanted to establish that not everyone was friends, by using some of my observations from when I was in middle school and going into high school. They have some connections from when they were younger so there is this hint of familiarity with some but it still holds awkwardness with it. Trent and Gwen in the story aren't as close but they will still have a relatable conversation with one another, like talking about how a teacher failed Trent and Gwen got upset over it. Gwen doesn't talk with Trent that much but because they have that past she will get upset if something happens to him that is unfair. Meanwhile, you have Courtney and Duncan who can't stand one another and the only thing that connects them is their sexual relationship. Is there hidden feelings underneath it? Yes, but for now as you write you focus on their dislike for one another. You lay the groundwork that 'hey maybe they don't totally hate each other' like when Duncan went to confront Courtney about being upset with him because of the slip up when he laughed at her not being a virgin. He doesn't want her to be upset with him, but he's also not going to apologize because that isn't their dynamic and that isn't what Duncan would do in that situation. (yet at least).
Another example would be with DJ and Courtney, at the start of the chapter you see how he wants to be friendly with her and is awkward about it, but she's upset that they have to wait out in the cold/ doesn't want to be there in the first place. Even when she acted cold to him then, later on in the chapter you see how she's not always cold. Asking him if he was scared, checking up on him as they go into the fall out shelter. She might think the whole thing is bunk, but she felt the same as him because for a moment she was also scared of what was in the fall out shelter.
Trent, Courtney, and Bridgette are all on friendly terms with one another because they see each other every day and share the same classes. Trent can deal with Courtney having some what of an attitude because he's been around it more and can handle it. Along with Bridgette. But it also goes into their personalities. I headcanon them both as very chill people that don't want to cause waves so it's easy for them to deal with Courtney when she's annoyed compared to Duncan who either gets pissed that she's annoyed or happy depending on the context. (The context is if he's pissing her off intentionally).
Now these relationship dynamics are similiar but completely different from The Boardwalk. You have everyone in The Boardwalk being friends. Duncan and Courtney may bicker but they're still comfortable with one another that even with their different personalities and interests there's still common ground to where it's easy to read that their friends. (Am I making sense because like I said early I ramble lol).
Also when writing character dynamics you also have to take in account of ages. In That Day in 1988, you see the personalities from the group of friends when they were 13. Everyone's a bit more immature so they're going to push each others buttons more. Duncan doesn't know how to handle his feelings for Courtney so he acts out by being mean to her and insulting her. Would he do that when he's older? Not in the same way. 13-year-old Duncan insulted the way she looked and how dumb he thought she was acting because he was upset. He wanted to hurt her in that moment because he's upset with everything that happened leading up to him punching Justin. Courtney bending down to check on him made Duncan realize that she was picking Justin over him and that made him more upset. So he wanted her to be like him, upset. Afterwords though, he regrets it because when you're 13 you don't think logically. It's full emotion.
Now when he's in his later teens he'll get snappy with her but now he's more emotionally mature and won't go full on 'guys only like you for your boobs and you suck'. For example in Chapter 3 of The Boardwalk he see's Courtney break down. He cares about her because they have been friends for years. So he helps her understand that she shouldn't feel like she's going crazy just because some adults tell her that she didn't actually see a murder. The next morning when he asks her to come with him to the forest she thinks that he was only nice to her the day before because he wanted something from her. This shows that she views their dynamic differently and it hurts Duncan because the moment he's honest with her she thinks it's just him being manipulative. It's a situation where he's hurt that she wouldn't think that he's being nice to her because he cares about her but instead wants something from her. Now that isn't the first chapter but it's something that can be applied to the dynamic of characters and how they interact with one another.
Establishing the relationships in the first chapter is always what I want first, and if not relationships then the character's personality. That way it also helps you decide how they would all react to a situation. Now my situations are always 'Man wouldn't it be fucked up if this group of teens find a dead body and have to solve the murder/ cold case?'
But at the end of the day I think you should reread one of your first chapters and figure out just what makes you think is not meshing well.
Also, this is getting too long already, and I'm sorry if I didn't help you I've never been asked this question before and tried to be as informative as I could lol.

Mind is the aspect of skepticism and about self-determination and how there is one self but there can seem to be many depending on the perspective the player is viewed through. they find every other aspect kind of weird and superfluous bc who cares if you're kind of good at bonds or time or luck. at the end of the day, that's just window dressing around the core of personal decision making. the universe is the observable vision of one person, and the best way to affect it is to change yourself.
unlike heart players, a mind player doesn't really jive with the idea of multiple selves. they are always one person, even if other perceive the mind player differently.
The talisman I always come back to with Mind is "the universe is unfeeling, but we are not." No one can teach you meaning but yourself. The potential spreads from your feet.
For context, the most prominent Mind player in whomstve is Terezi Pyrope, who is the orchestrator of The Retcon, the in-universe reset of the timeline to prevent the full-party wipe and Game Over. And when she finds a way to do it, to change everything, she does so by changing herself.
She's fucking awesome.
What did I suggest for your class? Sylph and Rogue I think?
Rogue immediately leaps out to me. The Rogue "distributes their aspect to others." Functionally, a Rogue of Mind might help others figure out the personal decisions they should make. The Rogue's biggest flaw is passive aggressiveness and not feeling appreciated by their team. Their greatest strength is that they are often the glue that holds the group together.
Slyph, I don't know if that fits you as much. Slyphs "heal their aspect in others." They are the medic with a gun, honestly, and tend to be the most mature people in their team by a lot. A Slyph of Mind would help their teammates with personal decisions, but likely in a nurturing, more passive way, rather than telling people What To Do directly. They are goodnatured meddlers who are prone to, uh, extreme acts when they are certain they are right and the situation is dire.

Über Topologien, und Netzwerke in der digitalen Kunstgeschichte:
Wenn seit Emmy Noether die Kartierungen Teil der mathematischen Forschung sind (vgl. Lee, C. (2013) Emmy Noether, Maria Goeppert Mayer, and their Cyborgian Counter-parts: Triangulating Mathematical-Theoretical Physics, Feminist Science Studies, and Feminist Science Fiction), bis hin zu Maryam Mirzakhani (in Dietmar Daths Nachruferzählung und in der Raumerzählung “Du bist mir gleich” wird das was diese Mathematik mit dem Denken macht in seiner Tragik und transformativen Kraft spürbar), dann ist das was die Netzwerk-Coder (z.B. Fan/Gao/Luo (2007) “Hierarchical classication for automatic image annotation”, Eler/Nakazaki/Paulovich/Santos/Andery/Oliveira/Neto/Minghim (2009) “Visual analysis of image collections”) und Google Arts & Culture in die digitale Kunstwissenschaft eingeführt haben, man kann es nicht anders sagen, das Gegenteil von all dem. Unhinterfragte Kategorien und unhinterfragte konzeptuelle Graphen (also sowohl Lattice Theorie, als auch Topologie ignorierend), werden ohne Binaritäten oder Äquivalente einfach als gerichtete Graphen, entweder strukturiert von den alten Ordnungen, oder, das soll dann das neue sein, als Mapping von visueller Ähnlichkeit gezeigt (vgl. die Umap Projekte von Google oder das was die Staatlichen Museen als Visualisierungs-Baustein in der neuen Version ihrer online Sammlung veröffentlicht haben). Wenn dann das Met Museum mit Microsoft und Wikimedia kooperiert, um die Kontexte durch ein Bündnis von menschlicher und künstlicher Intelligenz zu erweitern - nämlich Crowdsourcing im Tagging, und algorithmisches Automatisieren der Anwendung der Tags, dann fehlen einfach die radikalen Mathematiker*innen, die diese Technologien mit dem Implex der Museumskritik verbinden können, um ein Topos-Coding durchzuführen, das die Kraft hätte den Raum des Sammelns zu transformieren, so das nichts mehr das Gleiche bliebe. Während die heutigen Code-Künstler*innen großteils im Rausch der KI-Industrie baden, bleiben es einzelne, wie Nora Al-Badri (“any form of (techno)heritage is (data) fiction”), die zum Beispiel in Allianz mit einer marxistischen Kunsthistorikerin die Lektüre des Latent Space gegen das Sammeln wenden (Nora Al-Badri, Wendy M. K. Shaw: Babylonian Vision), und so Institutional Critique digitalisieren.
