A snippet of things to come
Tumblr media
Hello my babies,
I apologise for my absence, I am currently recovering from another stint in hospital but the next chapter is almost ready to go and it's a DOOZY.
For old times sake and because I've missed doing these, please see a few lines from the upcoming chapter as Grace (and we!) FINALLY get the justice we deserve.
See you all soon! Lots of love,
Beth <3
'Churchill?' She repeats.
For a moment he does not react, heartbeat pounding in his chest, mouth impossibly dry, before giving a single nod.
He does not need to thrive in discomfort; he needs to remain brave in it.
For something to do, he lowers his hands to his trouser leg, grateful to find his cigarettes and lights one with unsteady hands.
'Yeah.'
He watches as her throat bobs, a swallow that looks as difficult as his own felt. Her arms fold tightly over her chest again, then unfold as quickly. A hand goes to her forehead as she paces two steps to her left and then her right. She glances to the door, then to the window, paces back, touches her head again, refolds her arms.
Then does it all over again.
He lets her, continuing to smoke as he watches mutely from his place against the bookshelf, feeling unfamiliarly impotent. Helpless in her confusion, yet entirely culpable at the very same time.
It is a good while before she speaks again. Perhaps a minute, maybe two. But it feels inconceivably longer, the silence contorting around them, suffocating.
She has turned to the window, staring out over the wet gardens. Tommy is unsure when it became difficult to breathe and a clock he has long since grown to ignore, seems to echo against the floorboards.
'When?' She asks. Her voice does not sound like her own, it sounds tight and unfamiliar. Betrayed.
So too does his.
'After we got back from America.' He says, because there is no point in lying anymore, about any of it. 'I got a letter, calling me to London. I went and met them. Got the orders.'
She turns then, a sharp twist. 'Met who?' She demands, crossing towards him, voice suddenly urgent. 'Churchill?'
It is a valid question, Tommy supposes, with hindsight.
Churchill has indeed been the topic of conversation, it would make sense to have met him. But he finds her naivety is astounding. No, of course he did not meet with Secretary of bloody State himself. He has underlings for that. Men who get their hands dirty on his behalf.
Men like Tommy.
He also supposes, with hindsight, that the scoff he gives in response is ill advised. A short, sharp huff of amusement, as he shakes his head in disbelief.
But more importantly, the punch which lands against his jaw bone in response to his mirth, is entirely, wholly justified.
Chapter 41, Thomas Shelby laughs in his sleep, at least he used to.

on my peaky rewatch again and holy shit, cillian's acting in this scene is just next fucking level. it physically hurts to watch and is one of the most visceral, agonisingly brilliant performances i've ever seen - how the fuck did he not get an emmy for his work on this show

Grace gets killed and in the next episode, Tommy hides a picture of her in a drawer, at their house
2 episodes later, Lizzie says that they sleep together now and then, and he also sleeps with Tatiana in that episode
I’m so disappointed by the writers, it all happens so fast. I feel like they could’ve handled that so much better
Idk what to think of Tommy anymore, he is so disappointing sometimes. He is traumatized and grief can make you do weird things alright, but this isn’t out of character for him at all. It’s like he came back to his old self reaaal quick

One thing that I find funny is that in 2x5, when Tommy and Grace reunite, the only adjective that he first uses to describe her husband is “rich” lmao
She says “As a matter of fact, I am happy in New York. And I am married” and he directly says “Oh yeah he’s rich, I know”
Lmao his ego really got bruised when he learned that she married someone rich 🫠. Pretty sure he was happy to invite her to his house so that she could see how much richer he got since they last saw each other. Men and their ego…

Fun fact: when he thought he was dying he saw his father on the threshold of hell, when he was actually dying he saw Grace. He started hallucinationating and who does his subconscious want to be next to him? Grace. Of course Grace. Always Grace.
We never talked about this scene, but at that moment Tommy calls Grace 😭 He is completely beaten and well, they broke his head, right? And all he wants is her.

How do you think Thomas would be if he had stayed married to Grace for 10 years?
Hello 👋An interesting question, what Tommy would have been like if Grace had been alive.....I think it would be not easy for them to be together, given the ambition, intelligence and leadership of each of them. But love, respect and admiration for each other would help them find compromises. I see that Tommy, 10 years later, still has two sides of his business (I think the opium trade has a place to be), with an emphasis on legal business, he is also a member of Parliament, also the leader of a political party, I think he is the same successful man as we see him in s6. But in his life there is a safe haven, his cozy home, his place of strength, a source of warmth and common sense, this is his home with Grace and the children. I think in 10 years they would have had a lot of children (at least three), they travel a lot, have their own stud farm, are actively engaged in secular life (although Thomas does not like it, but the position obliges), charity and education of their children. He is more confident, gentle, calm, he finds time to sleep and rest, he is loved, caressed, it gives him strength, he has a own beacon in life.
Grace is his right-hand man, colleague, friend, companion, she is on the board of directors of the Shelby Ltd. They argue, quarrel, violently discuss important decisions, but always quickly soften up, talk to each other and make up hotly at night 🥰
The rest of the Shelby family live as they were shown to us at the beginning of s4.
Lizzie is fired after the incident with the Italians in s3.
In fact, a live Grace would not have interfered with the storylines of all subsequent seasons in any way. It would have been necessary to simply exclude Tommy's intimate relationships with Tatiana, Jesse and Diana, while retaining these characters in the narrative. And the confrontation of Tommy's duets/Grace and Mosley/Diana would be just great, considering how smart and beautiful Grace is. She would have tucked Diana into her belt in two counts. I think the author was just too lazy to work out the character of Grace and the arc of their relationship with Tommy properly. In an interview, he himself admitted that there are a lot of characters and he does not have time to pay attention to everyone. Although I understand that it would be a completely different story. Tommy would be happy, and this is probably not right and not fair, given his lifestyle and criminal activities. But it would have been possible to invent Grace's death at the end of the series, instead of the story with Ruby, and this would have been the logical conclusion of Tommy's happiness, his loss, retribution and his pain for the rest of his life. Maybe the death of his children else. To show that everything in life has a price, you have to pay for everything. And no amount of money will help you buy off the sins of the past.
