Learn from my mistakes
Entry Level Finance Associate Edition ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This past year has taught me so much about myself. I bumped my head so many times. However, this has shaped the professional I am today. Here are some topics I had to learn the hard way.
Tumblr media
First and fore most write everything down
You will have a lot of information thrown at you and it’s nearly impossible to retain it if you don't write it down. It’s also proven that writing things down is beneficial.
It helps you to process and clarify your thoughts.
It frees up your mind to create more ideas.
Provides a foundation of knowledge that can be built upon.
Helps with forgetfulness, you can access the information when you need it and you don’t have to remember it.
Practice active communication
Give your manager an update before they ask you for one.
Keep up with your email - it’s not fun if people have to track you down. Everyone’s time is important.
Figure out a method to keep up with your emails. I personally practice inbox zero and I work out of my flagged emails folder. More information here.
Seek outside educational sources
Book knowledge will only get you so far.
Don’t be afraid to google things. I bet money your superiors still do it.
Take LinkedIn Learning courses in areas that you lack. - I took a few, how-to-take effective meeting notes, business communications foundation and how to think strategically.
Stay up to date with Finance trends and emerging regulations.
If your employer provides outside resources, take advantage of them! They are there for you for free!
Run your own race
Everyone brings something unique to the table. Try to find out what you bring.
I don’t shy away from responsibility. I'm an extremely hard worker and if you drop something on my desk, I will figure it out.
Remember you are enough and you contribute something valuable to your team.
Get organized!
Here’s my post on my organization system. Extra tips include:
Learn to wrap up your day - Meaning make a habit of shutting down your computer everyday. This forces you to wrap up items you are in progress of and helps you to keep track of them. It also feels good to be able to start your day fresh.
Get a planner - Physical or digital whatever your preference is. Get into the habit of using it every day to log important dates and tasks.
Keep you calendar updated - You don’t want to miss important meetings.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
They do not expect you to know everything. In fact they expect you to know the bare minimum.
Ask questions, but try not to ask the same question over and over.
Get Grammarly Premium!!!
This has saved my life and lifted so much stress off my shoulders. No more am I spending the entire day working on an email and second-guessing myself. I run everything through Grammarly before I send out anything and save so much time.
Closing
If no one has told you today, you are amazing, and you are capable of fantastic things! Once you get the basics down, you will be unstoppable. 😉
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. This year, I felt I had no one to go to because I was the only black girl on my team, and we were very scarce in the Finance department. We can all win together.🤞🏾

Improving Your Work Ethic
Tumblr media
I had a meeting with my manager on Friday on three key skills I need to look out for when working. She said being in school/apprenticeship and working in a company are two different situations. There are skills you only learn by working in a team with real-life projects. She mentioned; Work Ethic, Communication and Time Management.
I decided I would talk about each one and give tips that she mentioned and others I found out myself and over searching online. This post will be about improving your work ethic. The advice my manager gave is from a Senior Software Developer's point of view but the advice can be carried over to other industries you work in!
Tumblr media
What is Work Ethic?
Work ethic refers to the values and principles that guide how a person approaches their work or responsibilities. It involves having a positive attitude, being diligent, and demonstrating a strong commitment to doing your best.
Imagine that school project you had to complete. Having a good work ethic means that you approach the project with enthusiasm and dedication. It means taking responsibility for completing your work on time and putting in the necessary effort to produce high-quality results!
Tumblr media
Tips To Improving Your Work Ethic
This is a long list but worth while to think upon! Here are all of the tips that my manager gave me and some extra notes I made afterwards:
Understand Expectations
Do you know what is expected of your role and responsibilities at work? If you don’t, you need to. Not just what the job description said when you applied but directly from your team manager or your boss!
Be Punctual
Arrive on time for meetings, scrums, and work-related commitments. Being punctual demonstrates respect for others' time and shows your dedication to the team.
Meet Deadlines
If you know me, you’ll know I struggle with this a lot. Consistently meet the deadlines for your tasks and projects. Plan and prioritize your work to ensure timely delivery. If you’re struggling with the project/work somewhere, ask for help.
Take Initiative
Show initiative by seeking opportunities to contribute beyond your assigned tasks. Take ownership of challenges, propose solutions, and actively participate in team discussions. I like this because I always come up with new add ons a project!
Be Accountable
Take responsibility for your actions and outcomes. Admit and learn from mistakes, and avoid making excuses. It may be hard but just say you messed up and it won’t happen again.
Practice Self-Discipline
Develop self-discipline to stay focused and motivated in your work. Minimize distractions and maintain a strong work ethic even when faced with challenging tasks. This is why if you struggle with this, do a Studyblr study challenge to stay on track and be motivated!
Be Proactive In Learning
Continuously expand your knowledge and skills by staying updated with the latest industry trends and technologies. Seek out learning opportunities and take advantage of professional development resources. Especially in my field of Tech, something new is happening all the time! My workplace gave us Pluralsight for free so we can be studying on the site as we work!
Communicate Effectively
Work on your communication skills to convey information clearly and professionally. Keep your team members, stakeholders or anyone necessary informed about your progress, challenges, and achievements!
Get Feedback
Actively seek feedback from your teammates, supervisors, and mentors. Constructive criticism can be good, see it as an opportunity for growth and improvement!
Collaborate Effectively
Practise positive and productive collaboration with your team members. Contribute to team discussions, listen actively, and support others when needed.
Be Adaptable
Changes at work, project or whatever can be scary, and sometimes quite annoying, however, embrace change! Be open to new ideas, technologies, and processes. Learn to adapt quickly to shifting priorities and evolving project requirements!
Take Care Of Your Well-Being
Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. I had a time when I was mentally stressed from my apprenticeship, I took a week-long holiday off and rested at home. You should maintain a healthy work-life balance, manage stress effectively, and take breaks when needed. You're not you when you're tired, mentally strained and hungry...!
Reflect And Improve
Regularly reflect on your work ethic and areas for improvement. Set personal goals and actively work towards enhancing your work ethic over time.
Tumblr media
Improving your work ethic is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness, discipline, and a commitment to personal growth. Some people can do it alone whilst other people need a little push, such as myself and my manager.
Think over the tips I gave and see how you can change things to improve your own work ethic. If you're not working, this can be applied to a school setting or something you can be wary of when looking to start working!
Hope this helped you and thanks for reading! 👩🏾‍🎓💗

Re: Phone skills, here's a big handy tip that might help you get a job or a promotion:
Always introduce yourself even if it's a number you call multiple times a day. You know that anxiety you feel when an unknown number shows up on your cell? The same goes for land lines. The person on the other end wants to know who you are and why you're calling!
Introduce yourself with your name and company. Something like "Hi, this is Stacy from Barbie Mart, how are you?" "Hello this is Stacy from Barbie Mart again, may I speak to Steve?" Or "Good afternoon, this is Stacy from Barbie Mart, extention 322 please."
You don't have to be super formal. By introducing yourself you've already gone WAY above most people nowadays. It's almost guaranteed to make a good impression!
A little, related tip: Ask if the person you want to talk to is AVAILABLE, not if they are PRESENT. Don't make the person answering the phones compromise building security.

PSA: SET A TIMER WHEN YOUR BREAK STARTS
When youre taking a break at work SET A TIMER. Your break starts when you are IN the break room. If your manager walks up to you at 2.00 to tell you to go take a break for 15 mins, and you get to the break room at 2.03, your break begins at 2.03 and ends at 2.18. Do not let them convince you that your break ends at 2.15. Your walk to the break room/getting ready to take a break IS NOT YOUR BREAK. Neither is using the bathroom!!! If your manager is gonna be nitpicky, you can nitpick them back. Your break is a right that is stated in the law (at least in my country). Do not let your boss steal your precious time.

Study/Work tips
1) When a task gets frustrating, move to a different assignment or project. When you feel relaxed enough, you can then go back to it with fresh eyes.
2) Snack/water motivators after a large project is finished or many small ones have been accomplished.
3) "Phone a friend" by talking to a person or inanimate object about what is troubling you. Sometimes talking about the issue can get you to the answer even if the person or thing doesn't know what you're talking about.

Last year I got a “bonus” of a Macy’s gift card because I was employed under a year at my org. Others got over 1k. It was also done very publicly and people 100% went to HR to be like “the fuck?”.
This year?
Quietly got a 2k bonus (well… taxes took some out but it’ll come back my way in a few months) just put into my account and that seems to be the way for everybody.
The lesson?
Speak up when shit isn’t equitable at work. I was lowkey worried there just wouldn’t be a bonus but nope— management listened.

Pro tips from someone who makes phone calls every day:
If there's a really long voice-mail, you don't want to listen to press the number 3 to skip it so you can just leave the voice-mail.
If while leaving the voice-mail you mess up press # then wait for the prompt to re-record the message usually its 3 but sometimes it can change.
As someone who gets distracted and loses my place a lot, this helps me go back and edit it. (I've had to use it a few times while making this post😂)
Any other phone tips? Leave them in a reblog!

Improving Your Time Management Skills
Tumblr media
Hiya! This is the part 3, and final post, of what I talked about in part 1's post (LINK) where I talked about tips from my manager, who's Senior Software Developer, about 3 top skills to work on in the workplace, and I wanted to share them here! She mentioned; Work Ethic, Communication and Time Management.
Today, we will go over improving your time management skills in the workplace - but remember, her tips can be applied to any other environment that this might be useful to apply!
Tumblr media
Time Management?
Time management skills at the workplace mean being able to use your time effectively and wisely.
It's about knowing how to prioritize your tasks and make the most of the time you have. Helps you stay organized, meet deadlines, and accomplish your work efficiently.
It's important to plan ahead, break down big tasks into smaller ones, and avoid wasting time on distractions. By managing your time well, you can get more done and feel less stressed at work.
Tumblr media
Tips To Improving Your Time Management Skills
Just like last time, it's a long list but worthwhile to think about! Here are all of the tips that my manager gave me and some extra notes I made afterwards:
Prioritize Tasks
Identify the most important and time-sensitive tasks in collaboration with your team. Focus on completing those tasks first. Consider the frog method!
Set Clear Deadlines
Make clear deadlines for your tasks and communicate them to your team members. This helps everyone align their efforts and expectations. If for some reason there is not urgency or no deadline to get it done, make one up to keep that productivity up!
Break Down Tasks
Break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable subtasks. This makes them less overwhelming and easier to handle within the allocated time.
Regularly Assess Progress
Continuously review your progress and adjust your time management strategies as needed. Sticking to one type of method at all times is something not the best strategy. Different tasks may need a different type of time management strategy.
Keep Your Team Updated
Provide regular updates to your team about the status of your tasks. This helps maintain transparency and keeps everyone informed about progress. They can even help you if you need any! This is one place I personally need to work on since I like working alone and forgot to update people on how I'm doing! Oops!
Learn From Past Experiences
Reflect on past projects or tasks to identify areas where time management could have been improved. Learn from these experiences and apply the lessons to future endeavors. Don't repeat bad habits...
Tumblr media
Well, I hope this was helpful to you! If you want to read the other two posts, here are:

Remember, time is a precious resource, and how we manage it can make all the difference in our productivity and overall success!!

Here's a goal-setting tip for you!
Goal setting is a robust process for thinking about your ideal future and motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality. Many people feel as if they’re adrift in the world. They work hard, but they don’t seem to get anywhere worthwhile. They feel this way because they haven’t spent enough time thinking about what they want from life and haven’t set formal goals. After all,…
