How To Network 🤝📱💬
Have a Plan: Because everyone is important, it's really important to know what you're good at. Before you go to any networking event, figure out what you're good at – like things you can do well, what you know, and the people you know. Plan what you want to talk about, especially how you can help others, either now or later on.
Start with Who You Know: Talk to people you already know, like friends and colleagues. Ask if they can introduce you to others.
Go to Events: Attend conferences, seminars, workshops, industry meetups, and social gatherings related to your field of interest.
Use Social Media: Make profiles on websites like LinkedIn or Instagram to meet people in your niche online.
Elevator Pitch: Create a concise and engaging intro that highlights who you are, what you do, and what you're seeking. This way you can make a strong first impression.
Ask Good Questions: When you talk to someone, ask questions that show you're interested in what they're saying.
Provide Value: Networking is a two-way street. Offer your expertise, assistance, or connections to others whenever possible. When you start paying attention to what people can do, you might see that one person could help another person. Try to introduce people who you think have something valuable to share. When you make these good connections, you're helping the networking event go well. This will help you establish a good reputation and create strong relationships.
Say Thank You: After meeting, send a message to say you enjoyed the talk.
Follow up & Follow Through: If you said you would talk to someone later, make sure you actually do it and let them know you're still happy to help. If you promised to introduce one person to another, take a moment to make that introduction. These small things really matter to people, and just one introduction could make someone's life better.
Meet Different People: Don't just talk to the same kind of people. Meet people from different jobs and places.
Never dismiss anyone as unimportant: Don't think someone is not important just because of their job title. They could know important things or have helpful friends you wouldn't know about if you didn't give them a chance.
Join Groups: Be part of clubs or groups related to your work. You can meet more people there.
Be Yourself: Just be you. Don't pretend to be someone else.
Learn New Things: Keep learning about your interests. It helps you have better conversations.

I remember attending those "girls in technology" programs and they just felt very alienating. You visited several places involving tech and they were all guys talking like you had no idea what anything is. No women in sight except receptionists/cleaners.
The program that intended me to join the tech industry just further hammered home that I don't belong there.
The best "girls in tech" was me working my way in by myself and gaining the self-esteem and confidence to not only not give a shit, but also thinking the men don't know shit more than I did, and are in most cases hired because they're men who feels entitled to a position in IT because they man and man logical.
I don't know how many incompetent men I've met in my career path that think they are a gift from the IT gods.
My tip for the girls/women reading this is gain the self-esteem enough to ignore what men are doing and wants us to be. Find your own path based on your skill. I can guarantee that an incompetent male will take many job positions but as your skill grow and as the men fail (often upwards) sooner or later the employer don't have any choice other than hiring you.
And then it's your time to shine. I almost immediately became the top malware analyst they had as I sharpened my skills every day while the men thought they did a good enough job because they were hired after all.
Then they'll ask you how you're so good at it, and that's worth the struggle you went through.
So don't give up on your dream blah blah basically ignore men, ignore their strategies for getting hired, you know what to do and you know how to get better. Find other women and encourage each other ok? You can do this! 💕

Barbie "B-book" laptop, one of many models built by VTech and Oregon Scientific for Mattel.
I was really disappointed to find almost no organized info about these has been curated anywhere, no specs, no Wikipedia page for them and so on.
It's definitely a case of "girl stuff, not interested.." leading to these interesting machines having their history neglected by people who otherwise obsess over anything retro. My kids certainly spent a lot of time on them, who else?

"Stop Romanticizing Tech" 👩‍💻 Software Engineer's Realistic Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've heard a lot of peers in tech say they wish people would "stop romanticizing tech" because of their personal experience with burnout and stress and more recently, AI and layoffs. all their complaints resonated with me and for a time, i also saw each day as a painful slog.
but i think just a pinch of romanticism and optimism can go a long way towards seeing possibilities and opportunities where others may not. we're already here, after all, at this point of uncertainty and chaos. if we tell ourselves that we can't see it any other way, we only suffer twice.
so regardless of your circumstances, i hope that as you acknowledge the reality, you also see everything that could be 💛

Introduction to Armchair Activism
Fundamentals
"Yes, Everyone on the Internet Is a Loser." Luke Smith. Sep 3, 2022. YouTube.
An activist movement can be a place to build community with like-minded people, but action is its foremost purpose, not community. To allow yourself and other activists to remain effective, you are obliged to abandon your personal dislikes of other individual activists. Disagreements are worth discussion, but interpersonal toxicity is not.
Connect with in-person community and do not unhealthily over-prioritize online community. Over-prioritization of online community is self-harm.
Luke is a loser, but his channel is teeming with entry-level digital literacy information and advice pertaining to healthy use of technology for us cyborgs.
"Surveillance Self-Defense: Tips, Tools and How-Tos For Safer Online Communication." Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Hackblossom, outdated, is discontinued. The EFF project Surveillance Self-Defense is up-to-date, comprehensive, and follows personal educational principles of simplicity and concision.
To learn more about general (not focused solely on personal action) cybersecurity, visit Cybersecurity by Codecademy and Cyber Security Tutorial by W3Schools. Both contain further segueways into other important digital literacies.
Direct recommendation: Install and set up the linux distribution Tails on a cheap flash drive.
Direct recommendation: Develop your own home network security schema.
Direct recommendation: Always enable 2FA security for Tumblr, disable active / inactive status sharing, and learn to queue reblogs and posts to protect against others' interpretations of your time zone.
Direct recommendation: It's both possible and relatively simple to host your own instance of a search engine using SearXNG.
Zero-Knowledge Architecture.
As a remote activist (even if also a hybrid activist), none of your action should be taken on, using, or interfacing with non-zero-knowledge-architecture services. Tumblr is, of course, a risk in and of itself, but you should not be using services provided by companies such as Google, Microsoft, or any others based in or with servers hosted in 13-eyes agreement nations.
Search for services (email, word processor, cloud storage) which emphasize zero-knowledge architecture. Businesses whose services are structured as such cannot hand over your data and information, as they cannot access it in the first place. If they cannot access the majority of your metadata, either - all the better.
Communications for Armchair Activism
"Technical Writing." Google.
Contained within the linked page at Google Developers, the self-paced, online, pre-class material for courses Technical Writing One, Technical Writing Two, and Tech Writing for Accessibility teach activists to communicate technical concepts in plain English.
"Plain Language." U.S. General Services Administration.
Plain language is strictly defined by U.S. government agencies, which are required to communicate in it for simplicity and quick, thorough comprehension of information.
"Explore Business Law." Study.com.
Extensive courses are offered to quickly uptake principles of business law such as antitrust law, contract law, financial legislation, copyright law, etc. Legal literacy is often the difference between unethical action of a business and its inaction. Legal literacy is also often the difference between consideration and investment in your policy idea and lack thereof.
"Business Communication." Study.com.
Now that you're able to communicate your prioritized information, you may also initiate writing with bells and whistles. While other activists care most about the information itself, business communication allows you to communicate your ideas and needs to those who you must convince worthiness of investment to and win over.
Logic.
Learn it through and through. Start with fallacies if you're better at language and work your way backwards to discrete mathematics; start with discrete mathematics if you're better at maths and work your way forwards to fallacies, critical literacy, and media literacy. State that which you intend to state. Recognize empiricism and rationalism for what they are. Congratulations: you are both a mathematician and a law student.
Economic Literacy for Armchair Activism
"Microeconomics." Khan Academy.
"Macroeconomics." Khan Academy.
The globe operates on profitability. Women's unpaid labor is a massive slice of the profitability pie. While it's possible to enact change without understanding all that drives the events around you, it's impossible to direct or meaningfully manipulate the events around you beyond your scope of comprehension.
Understand economics or be a sheep to every movement you're active in and to every storm that rolls your way.

Femininity in Leadership: Navigating Challenges and Leveraging Strengths
Women have made tremendous progress in breaking down barriers and achieving leadership positions in the workplace, but there are still unique challenges that women face as they navigate the path to leadership. From gender bias to societal expectations, women face a range of obstacles that can make it difficult to assert themselves as leaders. However, by embracing their feminine strengths, women can become effective leaders and navigate these challenges with grace and confidence.
One of the biggest challenges that women face in leadership positions is navigating gender bias and discrimination in the workplace. Research has shown that women are often held to higher standards than men and are more likely to face criticism and backlash when they assert themselves in the workplace. This can make it difficult for women to assert their authority and feel confident in their leadership roles.
However, women also have unique strengths that they can leverage to become effective leaders. Women are often skilled at building relationships, communicating effectively, and empathizing with others. These are all valuable traits in leadership positions, and women who embrace these traits can become highly effective leaders.
To become an effective feminine leader, it is important to focus on developing your own unique leadership style. This may involve being more collaborative, empowering others, and leading by example. Women who are able to embrace their authentic leadership style and bring their own unique strengths to the table are more likely to be successful in leadership positions.
Another key factor in becoming an effective feminine leader is to seek out mentorship and support from other women. Women who have already navigated the path to leadership can provide valuable insights and advice on how to succeed in a male-dominated workplace. Additionally, connecting with other women who share your values and interests can provide a sense of community and support that can be incredibly valuable.
While women may face unique challenges in leadership positions, they also have unique strengths that can be leveraged to become effective leaders. By embracing their feminine strengths, seeking out mentorship and support, and developing their own unique leadership style, women can break down barriers and achieve success in the workplace. Let's continue to support and empower each other as we strive for greater representation in leadership positions.

So hey, remember how the current fascist govt in Afghanistan is making it harder and harder for women to participate in public life at all? My friends at Aseel, in partnership with several other orgs, are answering back with the 50 Women In Tech initiative.
This initiative aims to provide 50 Afghan women with a monthly stipend, a workstation, and payment for their internet service for one year so they can do a fellowship with receiving orgs and get into the tech workforce: aseelapp.com/50womenintech
Obviously this isn't something Aseel can do alone. It's a matter of people and organizations around the world pitching in for Afghan women. Aseel's advantage is that they're an Afghan-run tech company trying to help their own community.
You can help by donating, sharing the campaign, or if you're a member of or work for an org that would like to partner with Aseel, reaching out to them to get that partnership moving.

WOMEN / GIRLS/ LADIES IN TECH
I’m jealous of the women community in tech, they’re always so warm and welcoming to each other (Although the tech community to me, is the most welcoming in all fields compared to art). As a guy in tech, I know that the amount of gate keeping that happens is crazy. It’s so crazy that I also do it but that’s because that’s what I was introduced to as the norm and then i got on Tumblr and I saw all these women just sharing free resources and their journey and just being humans and it’s really different from the community I’m used to. Mostly, I would be scared to ask for help because there’s a thick air of “You’ve been doing this for so long, you should know this” and that caused me to stop asking more questions and just figure things out myself.
There are times where I feel like because I’m sharing my journey here or tech related posts here “I’m girly” but it’s Tumblr but I guess that’s just in my head, idk. I’m really grateful for seeing the openness and community of women here just patting each other’s back and just trying to do things. It’s amazing.

25. 01. 2024.
man my acc j got recognised by a schoolmate of mine… oops
this morning i had a talk in school about how to communicate effectively to get what i want. it was rather interesting and especially entertaining when we got to watch our schoolmates roleplay some of the scenarios hehe
i attempted to revise the classic techniques of competitive programming which included greedy, binary search and sliding window. i’m still unsure on how to apply the sliding window algorithm on problems that don’t specify the window size but i’ll figure it out i hope… the hint provided was to binary search the window size but i’m lost as hell
4h of coding
finally set up my github acc and added a readme file to better document my progress
📖: what’s not to love, emily wibberly
☕️: iced coffee from the school canteen
