five scenes to characterize your whumpee
Where the reader first witnesses how your whumpee reacts to pain:
Do they take it calm, with no reaction? Do they curse, yell, punch a wall? You can take this reaction further later, when they reach their limit, either by intensifying it (a violent whumpee screams and tears at restraints) or by reversing it (an aloof one breaks and sobs).
Where your whumpee has no control:
How do they react to having no choice? Do they give up and go limp against restrains, do they push and talk back and snap just because the pain is something they can cause?
Where your whumpee regains some control:
What do they do with it? Do they cradle it close and hide it away, or do they take the chance to try and escape?
Where your whumpee cares for themselves in some way:
How do they handle themselves when there's no one else there? Do they sob, do they mindlessly stitch themselves up, how do they act out of the public eye?
Where someone cares for your whumpee:
And the reverse--how do they handle someone caring for them? Are they stiff and unnatural, do they push away and go stone cold? Or do they suddenly relax, do they let themselves feel things, leaning into the caretaker's side and crying softly?

FYI the whumper will start showing up in whumpee’s dreams during the recovery period. If you didn’t want to do this because you thought it was too cliche or unrealistic— it’s not. It’s real and it sucks. And of course present after these dreams will be that lingering feeling that no matter what, you can’t escape them

Whump writers: if you are ever trying to describe a stress position and aren't sure if your description is clear enough, and you either can't or don't wanna draw an accompanying art piece, may I suggest: online posing dolls (like what artists would use).
Just move the doll around and take a screenshot. Some websites even have features where the joints won't go past certain points that would make the pose unnatural or impossible (though they are usually a bit too limiting imo)
I personally used one of these when writing my "Dinner time" piece, to visualize the reach from various positions and such. Online posing dolls are just a a good tool for whump in my personal experience. Here are a few of my favorites:

The beauty of bruises:
Can be almost any color under the rainbow.
Can have a variety of causes (blunt force, stabbing, illness, etc.)
Can be any size.
Can be any shape (big blotch? Or perhaps a hand print?)
Can be accompanied by swelling.
Can have any degree of pain.
Can be hidden for that dramatic reveal later.
Can be numerous without killing the whumpee or even put their life at risk.
Can itch when they heal.
Can take several weeks to heal

How to write believable traumatized characters in the long term
Everybody reacts differently to trauma. Rene be that character with support always do better. If the character was abused as a child, their brains might not have developed correctly. This happens because when a chemical called cortisol is released it can affect brains that are still growing. Cortisol is released during fight or flight mode.
Cortisol is basically like hey guys bad shit is happening and then the rest of the brain is like oh no we have to prepare for this. The brain doesn’t develop areas like adapting and learning that are considered unimportant for survival. It just focuses on areas that it considers helpful for surviving. Characters might have trouble fitting into everyday society because of this. They might do really well in life or death scenarios because their brain is well developed and skilled in that but when it comes to learning and adapting, the brain has no idea what it’s doing.
The nice thing is brains don’t really ever completely stop growing so your characters brain, with support and care, can change. However the traumatic event will most likely affect people for the rest of their lives.
Also the whole what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger thing is wrong. What doesn’t kill you gives you trauma. Brains aren’t meant to deal with extreme pain and suffering. Back in caveman times, you got badly hurt and you died or you only got a little hurt and survived. There wasn’t any branding, gaslighting, water boarding or the other horrible things humans came up with. Our brains didn’t have to learn how to deal with that until much later. So the idea of, wow this guys so tough he can get tortured for years and then be fine is completely wrong.
“Being tough” doesn’t protect you from trauma. Trauma isn’t something that you can somehow be immune to with power and determination. In other words DO NOT CREATE DUMBASS CHARACTERS WHO ARE SOMEHOW IMMUNE TO TRAUMA. Make it realistic. Of course if you just want to have fun writing that’s fine. But if you want to have realistic writing then give your characters trauma.
Also this was inspired by calligraphic-tacs comment

WhumpAI Prompt #8: Branding Edition
Content : Torture, Branding, poisoning, Captive Whumpee, Forced self-harm
*Unending and unlicensed elevator music plays in the background*
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ Welcome to the Whumper’s #1 Appliance Store! Having a bit of an artistic talent and determined to use it on your human canvas? No? Just want to make sure Whumpee is blemished for the rest of their life? Well either way, spice up the way you’d mark Whumpee’s body with these brand prompts and adjacents!
Classic Heated iron brand
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ Make sure you pick the right size, sir! Even non-severe burn injury just several times the size of Whumpee’s palm can cause rapid loss of fluid via damaged skin, smol whumpee will be unlikely to survive the ordeal conscious.
Even worse, you use a rather large brand on Whumpee’s chest for visibility. The wound heals, but on the following days Whumpee might had more and more trouble breathing, your slave gasping out for air just by walking a few steps, further irritating you. In that case, the brand might have created a dangerous scar that restrict their respiration muscles, and they’ll soon succumbs if you don’t slice through the scar to relieve it. That would be pretty horrifying and painful! Unless... I’m threatening you with a good time?
Electric cautery branding
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ Wires assembled into your desired symbol or just a metal plate connected to electric source, simple as that, gentlemen. Problem is, you’re burning and electrocuting your Whumpee at the same time. It’ll be hard to keep them standing still until the branding scar properly form. May I recommend you these non-conducting leather restraints? The pain will be immense too, Whumpee might dislocate a shoulder or two, or maybe you place the brand on a strategic position that causes just that?
Bonus point, you Whumpee might feel the jolt every time they look at or brushes at the scar, muscle twitching here and there from trauma, and starts to avoid mirrors!
Painting with chemical burn
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ If metals and irons are too quick for you, maybe you can use a simple caustic chemicals or acid, and paint them right on Whumpee’s skin! It takes time to let the contact with chemicals to seep through the skin and creates scars, but maybe you like the wait. Whumpee wont feel the pain immidiately either when the brush meet their skin, but slowly the sting came. While hearing Whumpee’s sobbing and crying you can watch crimsons starts to bloom right in front of your eyes. Careful there, Whumpee stopped moving, they might be poisoned!
You might have to use a gas mask and gloves for self-protection while slowly burning Whumpee. Poor whumpee will coughing violently from the vapor, though
Tattoo
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ Forcefully restraining Whumpee for a tattoo session is a great idea, sir, but unfortunately, we are contractually obligated by all of our in-store artists that your Whumpee must be drugged during the procedure, or they’ll threaten to strike. After all, tattoo provide the chance for more elaborate markings and depictions, perhaps one that will upset Whumpee in no way a simple burnt scar can. Whumpee might be so upset and shamed by the tattoo that they try to skin the area themselves! Gotta keep that in mind....What? You DO want to see Whumpee try? Oh.
Carving
(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ Dear, getting a bit uncouth. Well, which kind of Whumper are you? If you’re a direct to action kind of Master that prefer your Whumpee;s watch, seeing you pull away the knife from their neck and shove away the clothes that cover the area you’re about to carve, then any small knife will do, even folded ones. By the time Whumpee realized what you’re about to do, better get your men to hold him down, though. But if you’d like the results to be more appealing and special, you’ll be in need of these wood cutter and scalpel. What did you say to your Whumpee to make them sit still through that? Perhaps you strike some kind of deal? Perhaps you give them a mirror and  Whumpee had to carve their own skin until you’re satisfied with the result?
Our Costumer Reviews/Prompts!
"Feel that? That’s me you feel on your body. Every time it aches, you'll remember me"
Whumper punching the branded skin, sending Whumpee crying and rolling on the ground
Whumper subtly pressing or brushing the where the branded area would be when going out in public
Whumper summoning Whumpee to their room just to command them to stand there and lift their shirt, so they can sit and enjoy their latest creation
Whumpee bought by another Whumper who paraded them and the brand around in their party, Whumper2′s guests enamored in the presence of a brand denoting luxury items
Whumpee left for dead on the rather busy road on the verge of unconsciousness due to their injury. Their arms tried to crawl to passerby, but NO ONE even dare to touch them, knowing Whumper’s public image and what the brand, visible on their half naked body, means.
Same as above, but maybe a suitably stupid/brave Caretaker came to help, despite everyone’s plea to get them to leave whumpee in a ditch somewhere
Rescued Whumpee is returned catatonic/unable to talk due to other affliction. Caretaker has to investigate from the brand alone
Whumpee who managed to live their life hiding the brand away saw the same symbol with in a billboard/stone carving/TV, and proceeded to violently vomit. Caretaker is horrified.
Caretaker comply to close their eyes or look away everytime Whumpee’s brand is exposed, like when bathing/ changing their bandages
Caretaker towering over defeated Whumper, holding [your desired branding tool] previously used on Whumpee. “Whumpee, show me again, the exact spot.” they exclaimed coldly while gripping the it tighter.

Whump writing tip:
Blood doesn’t really stain red. Blood stains tend to turn brown right away, then wear down to yellow or green with time and washing.
(Real bloodstains under the cut)

Help
Hi this is a weird question but I want my book to be correct, and I figured this was the group to know about blood.
This is a snippet from one of my books:
Tumblr media
I am concerned about how I wrote about “a shadow of pink on the skin” as I think maybe this is not possible. The character is mixed, and is (Please tell me if I’m wording this incorrectly) tanner in the Summer and lighter in the winter.
As this takes place in summertime when she is more tanned, is this possible with what I described, or is there a different description for what blood looks like on the skin?

so rude that fantasizing about writing alone is not enough to actually get the fic done. you have to actually sit down and write it. insane.

“the opening sentence of a fic is one of the most important parts, since it tells readers the tone, the setting and the writing style of the entire fic”

Friendly reminder to all the writers on here:
You don’t owe anyone good writing.
You don’t owe anyone a complete storyline written in order.
You can jump around. You can abandon projects. You can write really shitty stories! Writing is about telling stories and creating worlds. Not about what makes your followers happy.
I have to remind myself of this a lot, because in most of my stories I’ve gotten stuck and don’t know where to go. But you can jump around. You can skip parts. It doesn’t matter.
Write what makes you happy.

Low level/continuous pain tips for writing
Want to avoid the action movie effect and make your character's injuries have realistic lasting impacts? Have a sick character you're using as hurt/comfort fodder? Everyone has tips for how to write Dramatic Intense Agony, but the smaller human details of lasting or low-level discomfort are rarely written in. Here are a few pain mannerisms I like to use as reference:
General
Continuously gritted teeth (may cause headaches or additional jaw pain over time)
Irritability, increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, etc
Repetitive movements (fidgeting, unable to sit still, slight rocking or other habitual movement to self-soothe)
Soft groaning or whimpering, when pain increases or when others aren't around
Heavier breathing, panting, may be deeper or shallower than normal
Moving less quickly, resistant to unnecessary movement
Itching in the case of healing wounds
Subconsciously hunching around the pain (eg. slumped shoulders or bad posture for gut pain)
Using a hand to steady themself when walking past walls, counters, etc (also applies to illness)
Narration-wise: may not notice the pain was there until it's gone because they got so used to it, or may not realize how bad it was until it gets better
May stop mentioning it outright to other people unless they specifically ask or the pain increases
Limb pain
Subtly leaning on surfaces whenever possible to take weight off foot/leg pain
Rubbing sore spots while thinking or resting
Wincing and switching to using other limb frequently (new/forgettable pain) or developed habit of using non dominant limb for tasks (constant/long term pain)
Propping leg up when sitting to reduce inflammation
Holding arm closer to body/moving it less
Moving differently to avoid bending joints (eg. bending at the waist instead of the knees to pick something up)
Nausea/fever/non-pain discomfort
Many of the same things as above (groaning, leaning, differences in movement)
May avoid sudden movements or turning head for nausea
Urge to press up against cold surfaces for fever
Glazed eyes, fixed stare, may take longer to process words or get their attention
Shivering, shaking, loss of fine motor control
If you have any more details that you personally use to bring characters to life in these situations, I'd love to hear them! I'm always looking for ways to make my guys suffer more write people with more realism :)

Got too curious and watched a video about the rabies vaccine injection because of a show I was watching and it was kind of a trip.
I knew you would need, like, 4 or 5 injections, but I had no idea that a large dose of the vaccine had to be injected into the wound itself.
Okay, not literally into the wound. More like, around it and then under it. (but it looked very painful. In the video, the wound began to bleed again.)
Anyway, I know five people who would probably need a rabies vaccine at some point in their lives.

smartdraw.com - A cool website I found!
I wanted to do a blueprint of a scene and searched for a free online tool. This website has more than just house plans and mind maps, and I think it could really come in handy if you want to make some settings more approachable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can choose to start from scratch or use one of the many templates. The latter is probably easier in the beginning, to try out the different ways to arrange and color the objects. After getting used to the interface (it is similar to PowerPoint) you can use the result as a way to plan your scenes or give your readers a visual aid to follow the plot.
The symbols (or rather objects) for the floor plans, timelines, family trees, crime scenes etc. are sorted in many subcategories, e.g. Floor Plans -> Furniture -> Kitchen. No matter which type of diagram you pick, you can also use the objects from the others, so if you want an endoplasmic reticulum in your bathroom blueprint, go for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that for whump purposes you should especially check out the Crime Scene category for blood, drugs, weapons and so on.
I do have to say that I experienced some bugs and long loading time, but that could just be my ancient computer going wild. Also, the graphics are certainly not the prettiest. As someone who would have had to draw everything themself instead, it's still a great option.
TLDR: It's like Picrew but for locations.

I cannot stress enough the importance of transformations that are not necessarily redemptive.
- Cold and misanthropic villains who learn to care for the people close to them
- Coerced villains/minions running away–not to help the heroes, but to help themselves
- Villains who have dedicated their life and existence to The Cause who develop agency, who begin making their own decisions for their own reasons, whether or not they are GoodTM decisions
- Bigoted villains who learn to stop being a dick in that specific area
- Villains otherwise driven by hate who reevaluate their motives if not their purpose
- Heroes so dedicated to The Cause that they stop caring for the people around them
- Heroes who stop caring in a healthy way, who become jealous or excessively competitive
- Characters on all sides with trust issues who learn to trust, if only one or two individuals
- Selfish characters who learn self-sacrifice, even if it's only for fellow team members instead of a hero team or a Noble CauseTM
- Characters who stand up to their abusers/refuse to be taken advantage of anymore in their interpersonal relationships outside the context of switching sides
There seems to be a growing expectation and even demand in fandom that villains be redeemed/redeemable, that heroes only become more GoodTM, and that anything else is somehow shortsighted or glorifying bad behavior. But people don't only grow in one direction, and personal progress doesn't have moral requirememts. Personal change doesn't have moral requirements.
People can learn to love, to trust, to grow, to think for themselves without experiencing a major paradigm shift, and people don't always experience major paradigm shifts for the better. The fight for GoodTM and its necessity can actually be highlighted by a hero who goes bad and must then be defeated by former allies. Agency can actually be more profound if it doesn't conform to expectations or tropes within the story, because it becomes twofold: the character in question liberates themselves not only from the restrictions imposed on them by their circumstances/leaders but from those imposed by the reader/viewer as well.
