As Long As You Care
Part 1 of the "Somebody Else" series
Tumblr media
Pairing: Soobin x Reader, Yeonjun x Reader
Summary: From the moment he first met you, Soobin has had the biggest crush on you. The only thing standing in his way is his college roommate, Yeonjun, who you’ve been in love with ever since you were little.
Tropes: love triangle, unrequited love, fake dating, frat boy!yeonjun, nerd!soobin, roommates, college AU, childhood best friends
Word Count: 2.4k
Warnings: drinking, sexual tension (mdni!), curse words, yj is an asshole
A/N: TBH I feel like this is one of my weakest works so far, but I really like the concept and already have the whole thing planned out, so I will try and see completing it through <3
“If you could see that I'm the one who understands you Been here all along, So why can't you see? You belong with me" —You Belong With Me, Taylor Swift
“If you have a crush on Y/N, then go for it,” Yeonjun laughs, surprised that Soobin would even bother to get his permission, as if he wants your hand in marriage or something.
“Really? You don’t mind?” Soobin blinks back, unsure of whether or not his roommate is being serious. You’ve been friends with Yeonjun since you were little kids, so Soobin figured that running the idea of asking you out by him was surely the right thing to do.
“If you’re worried about whether me and her are more than friends, don’t be. If we were going to start dating, we would’ve when we were in high school. God knows it would’ve made our moms happy.”
“Would you help me then? You know her better than I do,” Soobin continues, eager for tips on how to properly woo you. “Do you know her favorite kind of flowers?”
“Can’t say I do,” Yeonjun shrugs. “Listen, Soob, Y/N is a hopeless romantic. And she’s never even had a boyfriend before. I’m sure whatever you come up with will exceed any and all of her expectations.”
Yeonjun’s excuses for why the moment doesn’t need to be special are precisely why Soobin wants to take so much care in planning things. It would be your first date, first boyfriend, first everything.
Well, except for your first kiss, which Yeonjun had graciously stolen back in middle school, years before he had even introduced you to Soobin. Both of you have asserted that it was only once, and simply for you to get it over with before a school dance in the hopes that your real crush would make a move.
Soobin would be lying to say he doesn’t get jealous of the two of you. Plus, Yeonjun is totally wrong. From what others have said, you’re extremely picky when it comes to guys.
“So, when are you going to ask her?” Yeonjun says, snapping Soobin out of his trance. “She’ll be here any minute if you wanna do it then.”
“She’s coming over now?” Soobin asks, his palms feeling infinitely more sweaty. He hasn’t had any time to do his hair or choose a good outfit, let alone run to the store and pick up any of the little presents he had planned on getting for you.
“We’re going to get breakfast. Some new café she’s been dying to try,” Yeonjun replies, his mouth full of a croissant. Soobin rolls his eyes. If the two of you are about to go out to eat, why the hell is he stuffing his face right now?
Soobin checks his watch. If he leaves now, he’ll surely make it back before the two of you return. “Can you make sure that you guys come here when you’re done?”
“I can make no promises,” Yeonjun sighs, staring at his reflection in the hallway mirror. He throws on a pair of sunglasses, his phone ringing to signal that he’s gotten a text, most likely from you. “Y/N is going to meet me outside. It’s now or never, dude.”
Soobin glances out the window and spots you standing in the courtyard, wearing a floral sundress that hugs you in all the right places. The sunlight shines down on your hair, leaving a glow that makes you look absolutely angelic. He swallows hard.
You’ve made yourself comfortable on a bench just outside, your feet propped up on the arm rest.
“It looks like she’s been waiting a while,” Soobin observes.
“Yeah, I know,” Yeonjun says nonchalantly.
“Shouldn’t you hurry up, then?”
“Why are you asking so many questions?” Yeonjun scoffs. “Since you’re so concerned, I’ve got a date after this, okay? Well, if you can even call it that. Point is, I need to look good, and that takes time.”
“I guess I’ll just ask her another day, then,” Soobin sighs in defeat, backing away from the window. He knows better than to push Yeonjun. “Listen, will you do me a favor?”
“Depends on what it is.” Yeonjun is still admiring himself, now unbuttoning even more of his shirt. He might as well go topless at this point, Soobin thinks to himself.
“Could you maybe mention me and see how Y/N reacts?” Soobin asks, adjusting his glasses.
“I will for 30,000 won,” Yeonjun deadpans, not even bothering to look Soobin’s way.
“Are you joking?”
“No. I don’t care if you guys date, but I certainly won’t be making it easy for you. She’s my friend. If you become her boyfriend and start taking her out, that’s less time she’ll be spending with me.” Sometimes, most of the time, Soobin really hates his roommate.
“You suck,” Soobin says, reaching into his wallet and handing over a few bills. “Here.”
“Pleasure doing business,” Yeonjun grins, pocketing the cash. A knock at the door startles both of them. “Why don’t you get that?”
Soobin heads for the door, knowing you’re on the other side of it. He mentally prepares himself, smoothing his hair into place and checking his breath.
When the door swings open, you’re surprised to see Yeonjun’s roommate staring at you.
“Uh, hi,” you greet him. Soobin holds his breath. You’re even more beautiful up close. “Is Yeonjun ready to go? I’ve been waiting downstairs, for like, ten minutes.”
“I don’t think so,” Soobin says, stepping aside to let you into the dorm’s common room. “You’re welcome to wait, though.”
“Thanks,” you reply, stepping in and spotting your best friend fussing with his hair. “Hi Junie!”
“Hi, Y/N,” Yeonjun smiles. He pulls you into a tight hug. “Sorry to keep you waiting. I didn’t see your texts. I just need a few more minutes, okay?”
Soobin knows his roommate is lying, but he’s not going to be the one to tell you that.
“Oh, yeah, of course,” you say, making yourself comfortable on the couch. You turn your attention to Soobin, who you don’t really know much about. “How’s your morning going, Soobin?”
“It’s good. Great, actually! A little busy, but I like having things to do, you know?”
“Yeah, I get that. What are you up to?”
“Mostly running errands. Then later I have to take some photos of today’s soccer game for the school newspaper, go to jazz band practice, and study for my econ midterm,” he rambles.
“Wow. That’s… a lot.” Your eyes widen, wondering how he manages to juggle that kind of schedule. Sure, you care about extracurriculars too, but never enough to risk burning yourself out.
“Soobin is a real nerd, Y/N. If you ever need a tutor for anything, he’s your guy,” Yeonjun calls from the bathroom.
“Ooh, okay. How are you at multivariable calculus?” you inquire. It’s the class you’ve been struggling with the most this semester.
“Math is unfortunately the one thing I’m bad at,” Soobin admits. He opens his mouth to keep talking, but Yeonjun’s finally returned, at last ready to go.
Soobin watches as Yeonjun’s hand finds yours, pulling you up off the couch before finding its way around your waist. “Let’s head out, babe.”
“Yay! Okay, well, bye, Soobin!” You wave, being pulled along. “I’ll see you around, I guess.”
Yeonjun drags you out the front door before Soobin can even say goodbye, the sweet scent of your perfume lingering in the air behind you.
Soobin waits a few minutes to make sure the two of you won’t be stopping back in before he faceplants onto the couch, letting out a long sigh. At this point, he isn’t sure if he’ll ever have the chance to tell you how he really feels with your “best” friend standing in the way.
—————-
Soobin’s heart nearly beats out of his chest the second he lays his eyes on you. You’re wearing the same sundress from earlier today, but this time without the slouchy cardigan draped over your shoulders, and your hair is thrown into a perfectly messy updo. To top it all off, you’ve got glitter dusted along your neck and collarbone, making you shimmer under the glow of the frat’s neon lights.
He wants nothing more than to lean down and kiss it all off of you. The only issue is that you’re surrounded by a ton of other partygoers who probably all want to do the same.
You’re the only reason he even bothered to come to this party and he might not even get the chance to talk to you. He may not have been of any help this morning, but at least Yeonjun was decent enough to text Soobin and let him know the two of you would be here tonight.
“Soob! I didn’t think you’d actually come!” Yeonjun’s voice startles him as he claps his roommate on the shoulders from behind, his hands still wet from swimming in the pool. Soobin jerks back, nearly spilling the contents of his red solo cup.
“She looks hot, doesn’t she?” Yeonjun continues, glancing past him to see you twirling your hair as you gently let another guy know he has no chance with you. Soobin hates it when he talks about you this way, even if it’s true. “Did you tell her you’re in love with her yet?”
“We haven’t even talked,” Soobin says, his voice barely reaching above the music’s blast. He stares down at his white sneakers, sticky from the spilled drinks and god knows what else is lining the frat’s linoleum floors. “Did you do what I asked you to, by the way?”
“Shit, sorry, man. I totally forgot. But you know what? Maybe we can change your luck,” Yeonjun smiles, feeling a bit sorry for his lovesick roommate. “Me and a few other people are gonna start a game of spin the bottle in the next room if you want to try and kiss her.”
It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. Except when you spin the bottle and it glides past him, landing instead on Yeonjun, Soobin’s heart plummets into his stomach.
You lean past him with a shy smile on your face, wrapping your arms around your best friend’s neck as he pulls you into the steamiest kiss Soobin has ever seen. It’s enough to make him wonder if maybe the two of you have done this more than just once.
Despite being over in seconds, it feels like hours to Soobin. To make matters worse, when you pull away, your lips wet with Yeonjun’s saliva, you wave at him with the most gorgeous smile in the world.
“Sorry, man,” Yeonjun whispers to Soobin, running a hand through his hair, messed up from where your fingers were just laced through it. “Maybe next round.”
If Soobin could fight, he would’ve certainly thrown a punch straight into his roommate’s jaw. But even though he towers over him by a few good inches, he knows that he’d be out like a light and wake up with a black eye that’ll truly never let him forget about this moment.
When it’s finally his turn, it lands on a girl just a few spots over from you and he does his best not to look disappointed. She’s pretty, for sure, but she’s not you. Soobin plants a quick kiss on her lips and the crowd groans.
“More!” an unfamiliar voice chants. The rest of the players join in, although all Soobin can pinpoint is the sound of you nearby, egging him on to make out with another girl.
He relents, enough alcohol in his system to finally let loose, pulling the girl into a fast, sloppy kiss. The crowd shifts to whooping and hollering, and he sees you giggling with one of your girl friends out of the corner of his eye.
It isn’t until the two of you watch as Yeonjun gropes that same friend seconds after the bottle lands on her that Soobin notices a shift in your mood. Your once everlasting smile has been replaced with a blank stare that unmistakably signals heartbreak.
Soobin would know. He was making the same face just a few minutes ago.
Eventually, the game fizzles out and everybody disperses back into the frat’s crowd, still going strong despite being hours in.
After wandering around the party for a while, Soobin spots you at the keg, frustratedly pouring yourself another beer. From the way you’re stumbling, he knows it’s probably not a good idea for you to actually drink it.
“Hey, wait,” he intervenes, grabbing the plastic cup out of your hand. “Y/N. Maybe you should slow down.”
“Fuck off,” you scoff before turning to see who’s interrupted your binge. Your cheeks heat up at the sight of Soobin, Yeonjun’s roommate. He usually never comes to these things and has only ever been really, really nice to you. “Soobin. I am so, so sorry. I’m just going through it right now.”
“I can see that. Do you want to get some fresh air?”
“Yes, please.” He loops his arm around yours and guides you outside, making sure that you don’t trip on any uneven steps or loose cans.
If it were Yeonjun, he’d carry you bridal style, letting you nuzzle your head into his shoulder until you reached your dorm room.
“You can have some of mine,” Soobin says, handing over his drink as you steady yourself against the porch’s railing. “It’s just Sprite.”
You nod and gulp the entire cup of soda down, the bubbles tickling your dry throat.
“You’re jealous, aren’t you?” Soobin continues, catching you off guard. You turn to stare at him, eyes wide before you fix your expression to something more nonchalant.
“No, I’m not.” He looks back at you with a frown, letting you know that he’s seen just enough tonight to not believe any of what you’re saying. Soobin doesn’t seem like the kind of person you’d want to lie to, anyway.
“Fine, maybe just a little bit,” you admit, crossing your arms in defeat. “I mean, in general, how are girls like me supposed to compete with girls like her?”
“Lots of guys would kill to be with a girl like you. She’s just more… straightforward.” You can tell he can’t actually come up with a better explanation for why his roommate isn’t into you.
“I kissed him the way I’ve been wanting to for years now. I don’t know how much more straightforward I can get. You know, last week, I asked if there was anything going on between the two of them and he told me she wasn’t his type?”
“Who isn’t Yeonjun’s type?” Soobin laughs awkwardly, regret immediately settling on his face as he realizes he probably shouldn’t have said that. He’s right and you know it, though.
“Please tell me they aren’t making out right now,” you change the subject, hoping and praying that the answer is no.
Soobin glances over his shoulder back into the party to see Yeonjun and your friend entangled, his hands gripping her hips as she grinds into him. “He’s… certainly doing something to her.”
“Wow. Okay, that’s all I needed to hear.” You walk past Soobin to stare at Yeonjun and your friend all over each other. It’s a horrifying scene, but for some reason, you can’t tear your eyes away. “You know, I’d hate to see how he is with a girl he’s actually into. Men really suck sometimes.”
“Y/N, look at me,” Soobin says, his voice the steadiest its been all night.
“Huh?” you ask in confusion. Soobin turns you back around, his hand reaching up to brush a strand of hair from your face. It trembles against your cheek as he leans in close to you.
“We can get back at him,” he whispers, both of your heart rates rising by the second. His breath is hot against your ear. “If you want to.”
You can’t believe the words that have just come out of his mouth. Choi Soobin, Yeonjun’s sweet roommate who has only ever spoken to you in the most polite and platonic way, is offering to help you make your best friend jealous.
Your silence makes him backtrack, the panic in his voice evident. He really has no clue what’s gotten into him. “I’m sorry, Y/N. I was just joking! I didn’t actually mean—”
“Let’s do it,” you say, cutting him off. Before he can protest, you’re pulling him back into the frat house and onto the middle of the dance floor, right next to Yeonjun.
Soobin can barely believe this is happening right now, and if his arms weren’t wrapped around your waist, he’d pinch himself.
Usually, you keep to yourself at parties, kindly entertaining men’s advances, but never giving them the satisfaction of dancing with you. Tonight, you’re breaking all of your own self-imposed rules with the guy you least expected to.
“Kiss me,” you say into his ear, loud enough to fight the music’s volume, but quiet enough for Yeonjun not to hear. Soobin looks at you with sheer panic on his face and you know immediately that he’s incapable of making the first move.
At least that’s what you think before he crashes his lips onto yours. Despite watching him awkwardly make out with someone else earlier, he’s surprisingly good at kissing. There’s a hunger to the way he grabs your waist and pulls you closer that makes you smile into him.
As you feel his soft hair beneath your fingertips, you almost forget why you’re kissing him in the first place. When you finally separate, you turn to see Yeonjun staring at the two of you, a sly grin on his face that makes you question if you’ve made the right decision.
—————-
“That was so humiliating,” you groan, trudging down the sidewalk. Soobin trails you like a puppy dog. “He was happy for us. So much for making him jealous. You know, maybe we should just call this whole thing off now.”
“No!” Soobin panics. “I, uh, I have an idea.”
“Which is?” you say, stopping to look at him. You can tell by the way he stares blankly at you that he doesn’t actually have an answer.
“Well… if we keep this up, then Yeonjun will see how great of a girlfriend you are and he’ll want you for himself! Really, we’ve just gotta give it more time.”
Your head aches, but Soobin does make a little bit of sense. “Fine, okay. How long are you willing to put up with me for?”
Soobin knows he can’t say forever. “Why don’t we try until the end of the semester? If he doesn’t confess his love to you by then, then we’ll stage a break up.”
“Sounds like a deal,” you say, reaching out your hand to shake. Soobin hesitates. “I don’t have cooties, you know. Besides, your tongue was kind of just down my throat back there.”
“Right, sorry,” Soobin says, taking your hand into his. It’s much bigger than you expected, nearly covering yours in its entirety. “Deal.”
“Come on,” you say, continuing your trek back to your dorm. “Let’s go.”
“My room is the other way,” he attempts to remind you. You don’t even bother to look back at him, wanting to get out of the cold and into your bed.
“We’re going to mine. Yeonjun is never going to believe we’re together if he catches you in your own bed tonight.”

Explosive Tendencies a slow burn fanfic about the readers developing relationship with Katsuki Bakugo.
Chapter four: You study with Katsuki.
Chapter links
Tumblr media
With the completion of the internships, the end-of-term tests were coming up. You sat at your desk studying but couldn't help but wonder how your classmates were doing.
Everyone had gone into a frenzy in class about meeting up to study and being prepared. Multiple students had planned to go over to Momo's since she was at the top of the class. But since you weren't explicitly invited, you didn't want to show up. You still hadn't really connected too much with your other classmates.
You also overheard Eijiro and Katsuki make plans to study at a diner today. Fuck it I'll show up there, you thought. Katsuki did kind of owe you for fixing his hair anyway. Worst case if they seemed super irritated by it you could play it off as if you were just going to that diner regardless. That seemed a lot easier than randomly showing up at Momo's house considering you hadn't even spoken to her much yet.
You made your way over to the diner and almost as soon as you entered you were greeted with an overly enthusiastic "Hey!" that made you jump.
Eijiro had spotted you right away and waved at you to come over. Katsuki turned around with his usual annoyed expression to see who Eijiro had so openly invited to their table.
"Oh it's you," Katsuki mumbled.
"Hey, how's the studying going?" You asked, making your way over to their table.
"Uh, not so good," Eijiro laughed. "Bakugo's trying his best but I think I'm hopeless. Sit down and join us!" He said, smiling at you.
You reluctantly sat down next to Eijiro feeling a bit anxious. Aside from the times Katuski had snuck into your room, this was the first time you had spent outside of the classroom with any of your classmates.
"I'm kind of surprised you're not at Yaoyorozu's with everyone else," Eijiro stated.
"I wasn't really invited, and I didn't want to just invite myself like everyone else," You replied.
"You had no problem inviting yourself here," Katsuki said, looking up at you from his book.
You felt frozen, guess you didn't pull off pretending to just accidentally come to the same diner.
"Ah don't be so mean Bakugo, maybe they can help me. I know you are at your wits end with me," Eijiro said, laughing.
"Yeah whatever," Katsuki grumbled.
"Now that I think about it, I guess I really haven't seen you hang out with the others much," Eijiro stated curiously.
You're face flushed at his words, was it really that obvious that you hadn't befriended anyone in your class? "I uh.. well..." You stuttered trying to figure out how to answer him.
"Hey dumb ass, are you going to chat their ear off all day or are we going to study?" Katsuki barked at him.
"Right! Let's get back to it then," Eijiro said, focusing back on his book.
The three of you studied for almost the whole day. It surprised you to see how intelligent Katsuki was, his delivery was always harsh though. He'd get frustrated easily when Eijiro couldn't pick up on something right away, but you were able to explain in a calmer manner and that seemed to help.
Although, it did still take Eijiro an extended amount of time to fully understand concepts. With the sun going down you three decided it was time to finish up.
"Wow, ok I feel prepared for the written test now! I'm just worried about the test exercises," Eijiro said.
"It'll be fine shitty hair, you worry too much. You'll both do fine, and I’ll finally be able to show everyone how worthless that nerd Deku is and how much better I am than that Icyhot bastard," Katsuki replied.
You sighed, “Bakugo I already told you- I’m pretty sure everyone knows you would have beat Todoroki regardless of him using both sides or not.”
“Hm?” Eijiro looked at you both curiously. “Told him before? You two have hung out before?” He asked.
Your face flushed at Eijiro’s correct assumption and you weren’t sure how to respond. It seemed a little suspicious to say the truth- that Katsuki had snuck into your room three times now.
“Don’t be so nosy dumb ass,” Katsuki grumbled at him.
“Oh right-! Sorry! Anyway… Maybe the test exercise will be a team exercise and we'll get paired together or something! After today I'd say the three of us make a good team," Eijiro said smiling.
You smiled back at him unsure of how to respond to so much positivity. Katsuki just rolled his eyes at Eijrio.
It was striking how night and day it was between Eijiro's cheery demeanor and Katsuki's quick temper.

okay. fuck. i need to talk about be my favorite. because jesus christ, this might be THE smartest show currently airing, which is a miracle at a time when la pluie is also airing.
so, this episode we learned more about kawi's and pisaeng's family backgrounds, and oh boy, is there a lot to unpack there... and it all works to explain why the original timeline was the way it was, why everything turned out so fucked up for both of them in the beginning.
(very rambly thoughts under the cut)
first of all, it's important to note how much of an impact kawi's father's death had. it was always clear that this was a traumatizing event in kawi's life, literally the first thing he did when he went back in time was to ditch the (supposed) girl of his dreams so he could be with his father, tearfully hug him and tell him "i love you, dad".
now, we're learning that after his father's death, kawi completely gave up on himself. he literally didn't see any reason to pursue a better life or his dreams because his father would never get to see it and be proud of him. i think this also explains to some extent why kawi has so much trouble accepting help from others: he has internalized the idea that he somehow has to do everything on his own, so his father (and others) can be proud of him. it's interesting that kawi obviously loves his father a lot but they're not really close: they don't see each other very often and in the first episode, it's established that they don't usually talk to each other about their feelings, either.
so. everything else that happened to kawi in the og timeline (knot making fun of his singing, pisaeng "stealing" his spot as pear's secret buddy, his falling out with max, kawi being too much of an introvert to make any new friends at uni) was compounded by the fact that after his father's death, kawi saw no hope for himself any more, and he ended up alone, isolated, friendless, depressed and deeply unhappy.
and now that we're learning more about pisaeng as well, it's becoming clear that something similar happened to pisaeng in the og timeline as well, only for him it was not a single event but more the reality of him being gay and having a crush on kawi (come on. nobody can tell me he DIDN'T crush on that cute awkward nerd as soon as kawi dropped his lil notebook in front of the seniors on the first day of uni), but kawi never even speaking to him and completely ignoring his existence... while pisaeng's own mother was adamant about pisaeng staying as deep in the closet as possible because it's bad for her political ambitions to have an out gay son. she basically tells him "you can feel whatever you want to feel but telling people about it is something that you should only do with my permission".
so, pisaeng has been getting told by his mother to stay in the closet since he was 15 years old (JESUS!!!), and since his crush is obviously unrequited and hopeless, why should he risk anything by being honest about it? his family is rich, pear's family too, their marriage is one of convenience for pisaeng, who gets to keep living his good life while placating his mother and spending his life with a person he's friends with, even if he can never love her romantically. from his mother's perspective, pear and pisaeng must be a good match, and pisaeng has no real reason to fight any of it. because coming out as gay would do nothing but cause him trouble and make him unhappy.
but in the new timeline, kawi is there as pisaeng's friend. and pisaeng falls for him so much deeper than he ever could have done in the og timeline. and now he HAS to figure himself out, HAS to confront his own queerness, not for kawi or even with kawi (utterly brilliant choice in the last episode to have pisaeng go on this journey alone!) but for himself, because it is becoming clear that he is living a lie and that he can't go on like this. having kawi in his life changes everything for pisaeng -- even if they weren't in a bl and were simply friends, this storyline would still be incredibly compelling because even while they're not in a relationship, kawi and pisaeng keep challenging each other, keep changing each other, keep making each other better, more honest people.
when they're in bed together and kawi asks why pisaeng likes him, he says much of the same stuff he's said before: that pisaeng is better, richer, more handsome than him, that he can't understand what pisaeng sees in him. but he says it differently this time, not with anger or defiance like in the beginning of their friendship, but so honestly, he's able to open up to pisaeng in a way he never could before just because he has had pisaeng in his life and they have had an impact on each other.
i keep coming back to this because it's something i rarely see in stories and bmf is doing it AMAZINGLY. both of the protagonists go on a journey of growth and self-improvement through knowing each other, they literally make each other better. and even though kawi is not at a point where he can see them as equals, he can honestly talk about this now, can voice his feelings of insecurity in a way he was never able to before -- and so, pisaeng can say, well, i think you're cute, does there have to be anything more to it than that? he doesn't try to talk kawi out of his self-perception, merely states his own perception of him in a way kawi can't argue away. i think this is a smart writing choice because kawi has to accept that pisaeng finds him cute, he can't say "no you don't" without accusing him of lying.
and oh, my baby kawi being so incredibly deep in denial is tugging at my heartstrings. there's a very interesting parallel happening with kawi's singing, something he was obviously dreaming of as a career when he was a child but completely gave up on -- until pisaeng and pear helped him gain confidence to put himself out there once again. i think something very similar is happening with his sexuality: he has shoved the truth of himself so far back in his own mind that it takes a long time and the knowledge that pisaeng is into him for kawi to even entertain the thought of maybe also being into him maybe. there's a certain safety in that, just like there's safety in having pear there while he reads his song lyrics to a room full of people. and that's not a bad thing! this show has consistently shown (and outright told) us that people need to help each other, that literally no one is capable of making it on their own, that everyone deserves love and support. and kawi needs a lot of love and support to be able to even let himself think of pisaeng in romantic terms. i am seriously excited to see what happens next, now that kawi has crossed the line between them, now that he got a taste of what he could have if only he let himself.
there are probably a million things i haven't said that i can't think of right now. but every single episode leaves me more impressed than the last, the story is written SO well and presented in such a smart way, later revelations recontextualizing things we already know, and with every week, everything makes more and more sense. and learning more about their families really explains a lot about all three of them (god, i haven't even mentioned pear's rich upper-class alcoholic father, a lot to unpack there as well!), and how they got where they were in the og timeline as well as in the current timeline.
thanks for reading 😘

*Edited.
Morning classes were finally finishing up. The only things on my mind were tonight’s basketball final and my best friend, Chrissy. Maybe it wasn’t serious if she refused to tell me, but for the last day or so she’s been odd. I could only hope she’d be up for cheerleading tonight, since it was mandatory we were there.
A few people waved as I passed and I returned the notion. Hawkins High school was a nice place, and despite everything that happened around Hawkins, it was, too. I had a pep in my step since I was still riding the high from my morning coffee.
The cafeteria was crowded. I recognized Chrissy sitting at our normal table. None of our other friends were there yet, so I took a moment to glance around the area.
There were the designated cliches. I was apart of the popular athletes. There were the nerds and the artists and the goths. It was always crowded on Fridays, but it was less so since it spring break started tomorrow and half the school decided to take the day off.
My eyes finally landed on the ‘freak’ table. Sitting there at the head was Eddie Munson, the leader of the ‘freaks.’ Everyone thought that they were some satanic cult because of their shirts and standoffishness, but when I asked my little brother, he squashed the rumors for me. It was just a Dungeons and Dragons club.
Chrissy was staring off into space, so I thought there’d be nothing better than to greet my adorable sibling and embarrass the hell out of him like I did every so often. I marched over to the table. As I walked toward the table, I noticed that everyone was absorbed with the magazine Eddie stuffed his face in.
“…Dungeons and Dragons. At first regarded as a harmless game of make-believe, it now has both parents and psychologists concerned. Studies have linked violent behaviors to the game, saying it promotes satanic worship, ritual sacrifice, sodomy, suicide, and even…” He slapped the paper down, his tongue barely sticking from his wide mouth. “Murder.”
His friends laughed, and I took the chance to enter the conversation. I hovered right behind Dustin, clawing my hands down on his shoulders. “Impossible. My cute little brother doesn’t have the upper body strength to kill someone.”
All eyes turned to me, and when Eddie’s did, I noticed all of his confidence faded for a moment. Dustin, however, stole the scene by groaning loudly and trying to shrug my hands off. “Y/n, stop! We’re having a serious meeting.”
“Society has to blame something. We’re an easy target,” one of the friends spoke up, but clearly my existence squashed the topic.
Exactly. We’re the freaks because we like to play a fantasy game… But If it isn’t miss queen bee,” Eddie spoke, his deep voice rumbling fondly. He clasped his hands together and eyed me up and down. “What do we have the honor of helping you with on this wonderful day?”
I giggled, finally deciding on stealing Dustin’s cap. “Oh, just the usual. If I’m not mistaken… it’s a campaign finale, or whatever that means?”
His lips curved into an amused grin, and he tilted his head. Dustin slapped me in annoyance in attempt to retrieve his ball cap, but I was taller. “Why, yes. You could say that. Would you care to sit in, sweetheart?”
“You’re a hopeless loser, Ed,” his friend groaned, but I chose to ignore the comment.
I shook my head. “If only. I’m a cheerleader. I have an obligation to go to the basketball finals, especially because my boyfriend - remember him? - is on the team. It’s terrible timing, you know.”
“Uh,” Dustin and Mike spoke up at the same time. They kept stuttering, but it was finally left up to Mike to finish the thought. “That’s w - what we’re thinking, too. I think it would be really cool to, uh, support Lucas - and Y/n! What isn’t fun about dropping a ball into a hoop and pushing people?”
I snorted incredulously. “You two better be there. Poor Lucas has been working toward this for months.”
Eddie’s face fell in realization of what they were insinuating. He hummed, kicking his feet from his chair to the floor and he placed his elbows on the table, leaning forward. He rocked side by side slightly with a quirked brow. His friends groaned in annoyance, but I could tell Dustin and Mike desired to be good friends.
“Hmm,” he started. “I could move it to Saturday.”
My brows raised in surprise, almost shocked at his agreement. Eddie Munson was known for getting what he wanted. I didn’t know him too well, but I knew he was stubborn.
“If,” he exclaimed, holding up his finger pointer and then swirling it in my direction,” you go on a date with me. And before you say no, it’s just one! Just one, doll.”
My jaw dropped and I could feel my cheeks reddening. I let out a few laughs. I should’ve expected that, honestly. I covered my mouth while shaking my head in disbelief. His friends let out a few ‘yeah, right’s, but Dustin was clearly desperate.
He swerved in his seat and grabbed at my cheerleader uniform’s tight shirt. “Please-e-e? I hate Chance so much! He’s a total douchebag! Lucas’ll be pissed if we don’t go.”
I glared playfully at him and then directed it at Eddie, who’d kicked his legs onto the cafeteria table. He was watching me with a grin like he already knew the answer and was just waiting to wear me down. I rolled my eyes. “Maybe Chance wouldn’t be such a quote unquote douchebag if your ruthless leader stopped hitting on me. Sorry, not sorry, but I’m not cheating on my lovely boyfriend so you guys can play a board game at a different time.”
Dustin groaned, releasing my shirt. “But he sucks!”
“Ditto,” Eddie said with a shrug. “I guess Lucas will just have to ditch the game.”
My face fell slightly. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that the basketball team was entering from practice, and that Lucas himself was with them. I knew Dustin and Mike were struggling to cope with one best friend being gone and the other busy with extracurricular activities, but that wasn’t nice of Eddie to do.
I distanced myself and stood near the center instead, not quite disengaging from the conversation.
“Unless!” Dustin insisted. “Unless he can find a stand in, right? This game is super important.”
Eddie tilted his head and pursed his lips. “I shall consider… But if it isn’t someone worthy —“
“You literally invite my sister daily, man —“
“Shush! If it isn’t someone worthy, he’ll just have to show.”
Dustin let out a sigh, and I could tell the cogs were turning in his brain. I heard Chance’s voice from amidst the crowd, and I glanced over. The team had gotten their food and was coming my way. I waved, about to join them, when my attention was suddenly stolen by Eddie once again.
“See, Dustin, this is just how it is.” He suddenly hopped right onto the table carelessly, raising his voice. “As long as you’re into art or science or parties or a game where you toss balls into laundry baskets,” he made sure to aim his voice right to where the team was, which made me shrink in embarrassment,” you’re never going to get the girl.”
Chance, grinding his teeth, made his way right over to me. Jason was right beside him, throwing a crumpled napkin at his chest. “Do you want something, freak?” he shouted.
Eddie still grinning wildly, crouched down. His figure loomed over us as he stuck his fingers to his head and stuck his tongue out wildly. I couldn’t help but laugh at the scene, which made my boyfriend momentarily direct his glare at me.
They maintained a rather awkward glaring session before he lowered his hands. Many people from the crowd shouted ‘loser’, but it always went through one ear and out another. He completely crouched, meeting our level, and his attention shifted to me. He fished through his back pocket.
I knew my face was burning up just from the interaction. Eddie knew what he was doing. He was always like this. I wasn’t the only one he was trying to wear down, but my boyfriend, too. I was confident he was batshit crazy if he preferred to flirt nonsensically with little ol’ me than not getting the shit beat out of him by my friends and significant other.
And then, he withdrew from his pocket a very crushed and destroyed dandelion, along with a few blades of grass. He handed it right to me, and in my stunned state, I couldn’t help but accept the odd token of appreciation.
“For you, my lady.”
“Fucking prick,” Chance muttered angrily, slapping his hand away and taking the weed from my hand. He proceeded to stomp on it, trying to contain his temper, since he knew my brother was sitting at the table. “Hurry up and join us.”
He stormed off, and I couldn’t help but giggle. It was times like this that I was reminded of how cute Chance could be. I knew Eddie made a hobby out of aggravating him. Eddie stood up straight again. He clicked his tongue and sent me a wink before turning to face his people.
“That’s what’s killing…” He dashed to the other side and hopped off, violating an innocent passer by’s personal space. “Romance!”
The group chuckled, and I found myself grinning. Eddie was fun. He was unhinged, but fun none the less. The random girl ran off, and he just shrugged, maintaining his goofy grin. He blew me a kiss and I quirked my brow. Dustin reached over toward me one last time, grabbing my attention.
“Please. We have to move the campaign, Y/n! If there is an ounce of my sister left that hasn’t been taken in by the dark side —“
“Yeah, you know what - oh wait, no, because I’m not a horrible person who would cheat,” I sighed. “Thanks Eddie, for once again ruining my boyfriend’s day and I hope you all enjoy yours.”
I nodded my head and turned, hearing Eddie eagerly shout,” It’s my pleasure!”
I shook my head in amusement, joining the rest of my friends. The cheerleaders and basketball team usually sat with each other. Hawkins was too small to have several sport teams at once, and all the jocks fell in love with basketball. I certainly preferred it to football.
Chrissy was talking quietly with Jason as I scooted next to her. Right away, she met my eyes, and I could tell something was wrong. Jason was a good boyfriend, but he was a meathead. He couldn’t tell when something was wrong unless if you said it to his face.
Chance was in the middle of reciting a competitive speech about how they were going to beat their enemies. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders absentmindedly, adding an ‘I love my perfect gal, Y/n’ in the midst. But I was completely focused on Chrissy.
I leaned over to her, whispering,” Hey, what’s wrong?”
She bit her lip. She was in the midst of chewing something, and her eyes wrinkled in sadness. She sighed. Her face was paler than usual and I was worried. I wondered if she caught a fever, but her dismal expression said otherwise. My smile faded ever so slightly.
She gulped, fiddling with her skirt from underneath the table. “Um, I’m just not feeling too well.”
“Why?” I prodded. “What’s going on?”
I watched her throat bob as she gulped. She wouldn’t even meet my eyes. I’d tuned out the world around me, even if I heard both of our names said several times. I assumed it was our doting boyfriends per usual. She finally managed,” I don’t… I’ll sound crazy if I tell you.”
I officially frowned, reaching over and squeezing her hand. She suddenly tensed and it was like she was withholding vomit. She turned to look at me, clearly upset. Maybe she had the stomach flu or food poisoning. She stood up abruptly, alerting everyone at the table.
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Jason asked, reaching for her arm.
She clearly couldn’t open her mouth, stepping over the bench. I was quick to follow, sending the man a reassuring smile. “She - uh - we need to go to the bathroom,” I rushed. “We’ll be back.”
Jason or Chance or anyone else was unable to get a word in. Chrissy was quick to walk off while clutching her stomach and mouth. Some eyes were drawn to us as we almost ran through the cafeteria. I could feel Eddie’s prying eyes follow us, and we made eye contact for a brief moment. There was something knowing in his chocolate eyes.
Chrissy ran at full speed down the hallway. I speed-walked to keep up with her. When she entered the bathroom, I followed suit. She collapsed on her hands and knees in front of a toilet, having bothered to slam and lock the stall door. I sighed as I heard her start retching, although I didn’t hear anything exit her system.
I leaned against the door, waiting for her to calm herself. I still heard her heaving heavily. I placed my hand against it. “Chrissy, did you catch a stomach bug?”
“No,” she boomed anxiously. “It’s something else.”
The restroom doors opened and in came Max. I felt bad for her. Ever since her brother died in that mall fire, she hasn’t been the same. Understandably so. She noticed me, immediately quirking her brow. Her headphones were on, and she promptly ignored me, splashing her face with water.
“Hey, Max,” I greeted softly, sending her a smile. “How are things going?”
She gave me a ‘why are you talking to me’ look, sending me a defensive glare. “Fine.”
Her tone was deflated. She wasn’t fine. But I knew I was a stranger to her and didn’t have the right to pry.
I was about to let her be, but retching sounded fro the stall. I heard her actually throwing up this time, and I furrowed my brows. I was about to give her some comforting words, but Max was alerted. She loudly asked,” Are you okay?”
Chrissy was still heaving, and it sounded like she was on the verge of tears when she spoke. “Go away! Just go away, please!”
I sighed, sending Max a reassuring glare. Max was tempted to say something else, but she decided it was best to listen, turning tail and leaving the bathroom. I sat criss-cross applesauce on the ground, reaching a hand under. I pawed at her foot, and as she vomited, she reached back to me. We held hands and I imagined she was holding it as tightly as women in labor supposedly do.
“Chrissy, you need to see a doctor,” I insisted.
She eventually stopped, her grip releasing. I heard her sigh mix with a strangled sob. She pulled away and I heard her knees squeaked across the floor. I knew she was a wreck for whatever reason,  and I got on my hands and knees so I could crawl underneath.
The sight saddened me. She was bawling her eyes out, knees to her chest. Her hands covered her ears and her sobs echoed in the empty bathroom. She was trembling like crazy.
I slid up to her, placing my hands on her knees and shaking her slightly. “Chrissy, tell me what’s wrong, please. Let me help you. I love you, babe, you know this!”
“I —“ she hiccuped —“I don’t know how to! I’m going crazy, Y/n…”
She trailed off, her expression suddenly going blank. Her trembling stopped and she stared at me. No, through me. Her azure eyes swarmed with fear, and yet it was like she was frozen in place. I grabbed her hands and knees and shook vigorously, wrought with distress. I kept calling her name, but she seemed completely and utterly entranced. Nobody and nothing else was here.
Tears of concern sprouted to my eyes. Suddenly she gasped, seemingly back to ‘normal.’ However, she burst into tears once more, backing herself into the wall further. She was so terrified. I kept shushing her, but she was completely in shock from whatever happened.
“Chrissy, please! Tell me what’s wrong. What happened?”
She was hyperventilating, but she tried to calm herself. She clutched my hands tightly, her pigtail bobbing in disscontempt. She sprawled toward me and buried her face in the crook of my neck. Her hands instead dug into my back painfully, but I didn’t point it out. I rubbed her back, waiting for an answer.
“I… I’m going crazy. I keep seeing things. Hearing things,” she started. “I thought the bathroom door opened, and then everything went dark, and… and I heard my mother. She was calling me fat and threatening me and… and it was so real! I’ve been hearing and seeing her everywhere! I swear, Y/n, I’m going crazy!”
Shivers ran down my spine and I sighed, rubbing my nose affectionately against the side of her head. “You’re not crazy. Whatever’s going on, you need to see a doctor or you need medicine or - or something and you need it now. Why didn’t you tell me sooner, babe? I’m here for you!”
Chrissy continued to cry into my shoulder, but she suddenly steeled herself and sat up. Her eyes were pleading with me. “I… I know. And I have something set up after school. B - but I want you to be there. Please. Eddie wi —“
“Eddie Munson?” I exclaimed in horror. “You can’t be serious. I said a doctor and medicine, not drugs —“
“Please, Y/n. It would take weeks to get a diagnosis or anything, but Eddie can get me drugs now,” she explained insistently. “And - and if you’re there, well… we all know how much he likes you. Maybe I can get a discount, and…”
I signed. I shushed her, pressing my pointer finger to her lips. “Fine. Under one circumstance. When you get home, you tell your dad and you get an official appointment. This sort of thing can only be… temporary. Do you promise?”
As she wiped her cheeks, she broke into a sad smile and nodded. “I promise… Thanks, Y/n. Just please don’t tell Jason. You know how overprotective he is.”
I laughed quietly and patted her head. “Alright. I promise.”
~~~
Cheerleader practice had just ended. Chrissy was serious about the whole buying-drugs thing. As we stepped off the field, I noticed that Dustin and Mike were running off to god knows where. That meant they were busy and that meant Dustin wouldn’t notice that I hadn’t left with Chance yet like I usually did. Good.
She was nervous, and so was I. I was worried for her. I would never say it, but she truly was going insane. All day she was in a daze or a panic, but nobody seemed to notice. Fuck my classmates, I guess.
We rounded the school and ended up by the back forest. Nobody was around, much to our pleasure. There was nothing but the birds and the leaves to remind us that we weren’t truly alone. Eddie was nowhere to be seen, either, but we made it a point to be here immediately after club time.
Chrissy was on a mission. She was walking faster than me. She entered the woods, and I had to speed-walk to keep up. She was panting out of fright, and I was hoping that this wouldn’t lead to another breakdown. Her hands were clasped and she kept looking over shoulders. I did too.
We ended up walking up to an abandoned picnic table. The wind had seemingly caught up and she looked terrified. Almost as terrified as earlier. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder as we came to a halt, wanting to wait for the vendor.
Chrissy shook my arm off immediately, turning to survey the woods. “Hello?”
Her voice echoed and it sent shivers down my spine. I didn’t like that we were all alone. Because, if something happened, I’m not sure I could do anything to help.
She suddenly gasped, turning around completely. She wasn’t in a trance like earlier, but she was seeing something. I grabbed her shoulder, but it was like my hand went right through her. She was staring intently at a tree. Her breathing accelerated and it was all I could hear in the silent wilderness.
She slowly began walking toward the tree. I was left calling her name, but my voice went right through her.
All of a sudden, a quiet squeal broke free and she started backing up. I squeaked as she walked straight back into me, which almost sent me to the ground. That is, until I collided with someone else. I turned, frightened and confused, and Chrissy had seemingly become alert of her surroundings again.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey.” I let out a sigh of relief when it was just Eddie, placing a hand on my erratically beating heart. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you girls… I didn’t realize you were bringing Y/n with you.”
I ignored him, turning to Chrissy. She peered over her shoulder toward the tree, and clearly, Eddie had picked up on her fear. “Chrissy, what did…”
“Yeah, you okay?”
Chrissy exchanged glances with me. “I… I’ll tell you later. Um, I’m okay.”
With that, Eddie brushed it off. His charismatic grin returned, and he pulled from seemingly nowhere a rusty green lunchbox. He placed a hand on the small of my back. “Well, my lovely madam and Chrissy, shall we?”
We both abandoned our backpacks on the ground and sat at the table. Eddie sat on the opposite side, dropping the lunchbox on it. Chrissy’s leg was bouncing and she could barely look past her lap. I leaned across the table, frightened for the poor girl. Eddie was slowly taking off his handmade denim jacket, watching her warily.
“There’s, uh… there’s nothing to worry about. Okay? No one ever comes out here. We’re safe.”
He set it on the table, sliding his legs through and sitting down. He unlatched the box and threw it open. I could tell he knew something was up, but he wasn’t prying. His eyes shifted to me often, and he clearly didn’t know why I was here with her.
“I promise.”
Chrissy steeled herself as the lid flew open, revealing various plastic bags with… weed. I was only acquainted with drugs because of my boyfriend and I only tried it once. “So, how does this work exactly?” Chrissy inquired.
HI i love ur writings for minho so much oh my god they keep me thriving. i was wondering if you’d be up for doing like a modern highschool au with minho where he keeps trying to ask the reader out, and she keeps saying no because she thinks it’s joke, until she confronts him and he gets all serious and tells her it’s not a joke and then there’s a little bit (a lot) of spice at the end🤭🤭
Ooo okay okay, my first AU story, this is definitely going to be a bit different.
Again, assuming fem!reader because pronouns used in the request.
HIGH SCHOOL NOT-SO-SWEETHEARTS
Tumblr media
MASTERLIST | MINHO MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: See above. Fem! Studious! High-school! Reader x Popular! High-school! Minho.
WARNINGS: Inappropriate language, the American education system which I simply do not understand or what is taught in American classrooms, spicy content, terrible teenage flirting, kinda of insecure reader, guilty pleasure high school drama tropes, I do not condone Minho's constant questioning of the reader- no means no, guys. No Glader slang here, folks- they ain't stuck in the Maze now.
Tumblr media
You are not a popular person.
Not that you mind. You have your small circle of friends and staying out of the typical teenage drama really is a blessing, especially during your Senior year.
It's not like you're disliked, you're just not someone most people pay attention to, and you like it that way.
You get to focus on your studies, your family and your close friends, which is more than enough to keep you happy.
Well, it would be if you weren't kind of a hopeless romantic. No matter how many times you tell yourself you don't want a boyfriend and that you don't need one, you spend a lot of time fantasing about what it would be like to be in a relationship. Like going on dates, having cute inside jokes, meeting your partners parents, and... other things.
In typical horny teenage fashion, you do spend a lot of time thinking about the more intimate parts of your desired relationship. But, alas, you simply do not have anyone interested in you, nor do you have the time.
(You totally do have the time; you're way ahead of your classes and are passing with flying colours- but you tell yourself that.)
Except that's actually not quite right.
"Dude, I am totally fucking up this titration, are you gonna help me or not?" Gally mumbles from behind the desk of the chemistry lab. How Gally and Minho got into AP chemistry is beyond me, and the teacher, and the whole entire class.
Probably to do with them cheating on their mid-terms. But that's irrelevant.
"Minho, dude," he shoves his friend, who has been casually leaning on the desk staring off into space, as per usual.
Well, not into space exactly.
"What? Huh? Oh, right, yeah." He clears his throat. "Acid in the... tube thing and we put that in the base and bang, shit changes colour- it ain't that hard."
"It's an acid-base titration."
"So?"
"So, we're seeing how much base it takes to neutralise the acid- the acid goes in the beaker!"
"What's the damn difference?"
Gally pauses.
He does not know.
"Whatever, the titrate is already in the shitty tube and now we gotta drip feed it in."
"Sounds like you know what you're doin', then." Gally frowns at the boy.
Maybe it wasn't a smart idea for them to both cheat when the only thing they have in common is being friends with Siggy (aka Frypan, the groups best, and only, cook.)
"Yanno, maybe if you didn't spend half your time staring at your nerd crush, then we might actually get past this with a C."
Minho glares at his friend. His crush on you is very much a teasing point in his friend group.
It started when he was struggling with an equation in Sophmore year. He'd just sprained his ankle after a training session with the Track-and-Sprint team and was particularly stressed about it. So, anything remotely out of his academic field was bound to make his day worse.
It's not like Minho is dumb. He's actually incredibly intelligent. He has a great memory and can understand people with little to no effort- anything scientific really isn't his thing though.
So, when you felt bad for him, watching him anxiously tap his good foot and spin his pen in his hand, you slipped him your answer sheet. He was stunned, especially since you'd never spoken before. But, when you smiled at him, giving him a reassuring nod, he never really got over it.
"Shut up, man."
"You know, actually, that's not a bad idea."
"What?"
"Yo, (Y/N)!" You perk your head up, flashing a concerned look at Harriet, your lab partner, as Gally shouts you. "Could you help us out? You're like smart, right?"
"Gally! Dude-" Minho whisper-yells at the boy, ducking into himself when you respond.
"Uh, sure," you walk away from your perfect set up to the chaos of the boys'. "What's up?"
You stand with your hands behind your back, looking between them. "Minho," he nudges his friend, "tell the girl what's wrong."
Minho blinks. "Well, uh, I don't know- you're the one who said there's a problem."
Gally scoffs. "The fucking thing won't change colour- ain't it meant to go pink?"
You glance between them, suddenly feeling very small.
You're not popular, which means guys like these have often teased you or do things like this because they think it's funny. It's gotten better over time with age, but you still feel like the scared little freshman that would get teased by older boys.
"Well, did you put the phenolphthalein in the beaker?"
They both blankly look at you. So, you pick up the small, dark bottle. Shaking it at them, you open the bottle, letting the liquid fall from the dripper and into the clear acid, which immediately turns a bright fusia.
You pull your lips into a thin line as they both stare at the beaker, no thoughts behind the eyes.
"Ah." Gally says after a couple of seconds.
"Yeah." You respond.
"Uh, thanks," Minho awkwardly stands up properly from his leaning position over the lab table.
"No problem."
You turn to walk away, but as Gally makes shifty eyes at his friend, Minho finally takes the hint. He's been crushing on you forever, he might aswell do something about it.
"Uh, wait, hold on," you turn to face him as he walks around the desk. "I gotta ask you somethin'."
"I'm sure your titration's fine, just don't pour it too quick or the results will be wrong."
"No, uh, not that." Gally snorts, not at you but at Minho's awkwardness, but it still makes you feel very insecure. "I was wondering if you wanted to hang out maybe, sometime?"
"Hang out?"
"Yeah," Gally laughs, covering his mouth and turning away, "Gally, shut up, bro." Minho is quick to snap at him. "Like... a date, maybe?"
You scoff, anger swelling inside of you. This isn't the first times it's happened, but probably the worst because you actually like Minho.
Sure, he hangs out with douchebags like Gally, but you thought he was cool. Say, you may even have a slight crush on him. He's handsome, funny, and, for the most part, kind.
Well, you thought he was at least.
"Real funny, asshole."
You walk away, returning to a very confused Harriet.
Minho stands in stunned silence. He's never been rejected before- nevermind like that.
Gally bursts out laughing.
"What just happened?" Minho asks no one in particular, visible confusion washing over him.
"You just got fuckin' rejected, bro! Ha!"
"No, that was weird." He's never heard of anyone being rejected like that before.
"Well, try again, then, pretty boy- it's nice to see someone knock your ego down a peg." Minho gives a sarcastic grin to Gally before shoving him. "You gonna help me with this damn titration, now, or what?"
"Dude, what was that about?" Harriet whispers as you immediately go back to your third reading.
"Minho just asked me out." You state, matter-of-factly.
"What?" She says a bit too loud, making multiple heads look at her. "What?" She repeats, quieter.
"It was a joke- Gally was laughing the whole time. I hate guys like that."
"Are you sure?" You glare at her. "I'm just sayin', I didn't think Minho was that typa guy, that's all."
"Yeah, neither did I."
"Pricks."
You scoff before she smiles at you.
You finish up the lab session, and you're quick to leave, meeting Sonya and Aris at the door as you all share history together.
"Hey, (Y/N)!" You keep walking, ignoring Minho's voice from behind you. "Yo! Hey! Wait!"
"What?" You snap, turning around suddenly to face him, making him jump as Sonya and Aris exchange glances.
"Did I, uh, did I do something? 'Cause back there you-"
"You think you're funny, huh?" Harriet butts in, defending you. "That's a sick joke, yanno; give it up now before you become even more of a dick. C'mon." She grabs your wrist, pulling you away from him, your other friends left even more confused.
Later, in the cafeteria, Minho sits with his friends, silently picking at his food.
"Okay," Newt finally breaks the tension, "what's going on? Why are you sulking?"
"He got rejected by his long-term crush," Gally sneers, earning a glare from Minho.
"Holy shit, (Y/N)?" Teresa leans forward in her seat. "You actually asked her?"
"Yeah, and he got completely rejected."
"What? Why?" Thomas pipes up.
Minho shrugs. "She called me an asshole and walked away. Tried to talk to her after, and Harriet dragged her away."
"What?" At least three people ask.
"Yeah, so, that's three years of my romantic life wasted."
"Nah, man, you gotta ask again," Frypan says between mouthfuls of his homemade pasta, which is worlds better than the cafeteria food.
"What?"
"Keep askin', you'll either get an explanation or she'll say yes."
"I don't know if I agree with that," Teresa mumbles.
"Yeah, me neither," Newt mutters, and Frypan shushes them.
"Trust me, bro, chicks dig a guy that doesn't give up- ain't that right, Gally?"
"Oh, yeah," Gally agrees, sarcasm dripping in his voice. "That'll work."
And, for some God forsaken reason, Minho actually listens to this.
So, every day, for the next two weeks, Minho asks you out.
You think it's some kind of unruly on-going inside joke, and Harriet is practically frothing at the mouth, ready to rip Minho to shreads the first chance she gets. Minho, at the point, would just like a reason.
Not that he's owed one. But, Teresa and Newt's voices of reason keep getting drowned out by the other dumb boys, so he's still going.
That is until you have literally the worst day ever.
First, your Mom's car broke down, and she normally drops you off at school on her commute to work, so you arrived at your first period late. It also means she can't pick you up, it's not like you can't drive, but you don't have your own car, and now she doesn't have a car either.
And now it's throwing it down.
You then dropped a whole beaker of hydrochloric acid down your leg in chemistry. Which meant you had to borrow Sonya's PE shorts because you can't wear dangerous chemicals all day.
Then you left school- forgot you were tutoring Winston for extra credit, and had to run back to school, soaked, to spend another hour there.
Unbeknownst to you, Minho has extracurricular activities being captain of the Track team- which is taking place inside the hall because of the weather.
So, when you're walking through the parking lot, dressed like a drowned-rat and Minho pulls up beside you, you've just about had enough.
"(Y/N)?"
"Piss off, Minho! I won't tell you again!"
He slowly drives alongside you from his beat-up, old range rover, the window rolled down but he still has to shout.
"Okay! Okay! Dude, you're drenched, wearing shorts, okay? I'll give you a lift home-"
"No way- I'll walk."
"You're gonna get sick, man- I'll shut up and just take you home, alright? I'm not letting you walk in this- I'll feel like a dick."
"You don't already feel like a dick?"
He groans, tapping on the steering wheel. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable- I didn't mean to. But the weather's shit, and you can't play top-student if you're off 'cause you're ill."
You pause. He makes a good point. You turn to look at him, sighing. He puts the hand break on when you start to walk around the side of his car, dumping your bag at your feet as you open the door.
"What's your-"
"I'll give you directions."
"Okay..."
The ride is mainly in silent, with some old-school songs playing on the radio. Minho taps the steering wheel to the beat of "Eye of the Tiger" to try and distract himself from the awkwardness.
Your phone buzzes; it's Harriet calling you.
"Shit," you mumble.
"You good?" Minho asks you.
"Yeah, Harriet's calling me- we're meant to be figuring out our history project tonight but I forget to tell her I was tutoring."
You swipe across, pressing the phone to your ear. "Hey, man."
"Dude, you were meant to call me half an hour ago- we gotta brainstorm."
"Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm just on my way home, now."
"Did your Mom sort her car then? Doesn't sound like you're walking through a storm."
"No, I, uh..." You trail off. "I got offered a lift, I'm fine, I'll be home in like five minutes."
"A lift? Off who? Sonya has work so she couldn't of?" You hesitate. "Dude?"
"Uh, Minho, he caught me in the rain and offered to take me home."
"What?"
"Yeah, I know-"
"You're fucking with me, right?"
"Look, it's fine, I'll call you when I get home."
"You better." You hang up the phone, taking a deep breath.
"Sounds like she doesn't like me," Minho attempts to say.
"Yeah, I wonder why."
"Do you have a problem with me, or some shit? 'Cause I thought we were cool and then you just started acting like I was a dick."
"Because you are a dick!"
"What?" He looks at you for a second before returning his eyes to the road.
"Doesn't matter; pull over, it's my house on the left."
He does as he's told. There's no car in the drive so your Mom must've managed to get someone to take care of it- which means you've got an empty house.
Thank God because you're going to need to de-stress after the day you've had.
You immediately get out of the car, slamming the door behind you. But Minho is quick to follow you.
"Hey!" He shouts as you march up your front door steps. "Hey!" He grabs you wrist and you turn around, pushing him.
"What's your problem?" You shout. "I don't get why you think this is so fucking funny! Like, sure, have your one dumb joke where you ask out the freak to make your friend laugh! But why keep going! What's the point? You don't have your little audience now, do you? What? You gonna call them after and tell them how much fun you had pissing me off on our little drive? Or is it the fact I got in your car to begin with? Is that the joke, hm?"
Minho stands there, in the rain, his brows furrowing slightly as he takes in what you've said. It's an expression you've never seen on him before, but you don't plan on sticking around to find out what it means.
You turn, fumbling with your keys to unlock your door, managing to push it open.
"Wait, what?" He stops you in the door, and for some reason, you turn around.
"What?"
"You thought it was a joke?" His voice sounds sincere, almost sad.
"You and Gally were laughing at me-"
"No, Gally was laughing at me," he sighs, dropping his head. "He was laughing at me."
"What? Why would he-?"
"Because I've had a crush on you since I was fifteen. Ever since you gave me those damn notes, a-and I guess I never got over it. I just finally got the courage to say something and Gally thought it was funny- for some reason, I don't know." He takes a deep breath. "But I- shit," he throws his head back, letting the water wash over his face. "I was never joking."
You don't know what to say. It's like your body relaxes, your shoulders dropping as you shuffle forwards.
"I get it, if you don't like me- and I'll leave you alone now. Teresa gave me some lecture on how to treat girls," he lets out a soft chuckle, "Newt sounded like he was gonna rip my head off. But I was never joking, (Y/N)- I really fuckin' like you."
"I don't get it," you mumble. "Why would a guy like you like me?"
"What do you mean?"
"You're... popular. Everyone loves you- you're hot and athletic and you could get anyone you want. I don't get it."
He smirks, his shirt is starting to stick to him thanks to the rain and his hair is starting to flatten. "You think I'm hot?" You glare at him. "Right, yeah, not the point, sorry."
He takes in a deep breath. "How could I not like you? You're pretty, and funny, and passionate- and you try so hard and you help people whenever you can. You're... incredible."
"You barely know me."
He scoffs. "Maybe. But I think I've paid more attention to you than I have any of my classes. I know you're good at science, but you hate physics, even though you're good at it. But I know English is your favourite subject. I know that you became friends with Sonya and Aris because Harriet made you after you sat next to her in history. I know the only class you've ever skipped is PE, but I don't know why 'cause you'd actually be pretty decent on the girls' basketball team. And I know you're tutoring Winston after school because he doesn't shut up about it half the time."
He pauses. "I know about you- but I want to know you."
You're completely stunned. The fact that he's paid so much attention to you, and knows all of this makes your stomach flip and your heart rate speed up.
When you don't respond, Minho sighs, rubbing his forehead with his hand. "Sorry," he mumbles, "this is dumb; I'll leave you alone."
He steps away, turning around when you step forward. "Minho," you grab his wrist, making him turn around to face you fully. "I, uh, I have a crush on you, too."
He blinks. "What?"
"I thought you were cool, and I think I was only so upset that I thought it was a joke... because I actually like you, too?" It comes out as more of a question as you avoid his gaze. But when he doesn't say anything, you look at him.
He's smiling. It's a genuine and earnest expression. "Yeah, you actully-?"
"Just shut up and kiss me," you don't know where the surge of confidence came from. Maybe you can't take this sappy talk anymore, or that Minho looks too good being soaked wet through.
Stepping closer, he brings his hand to your cheek, brushing his thumb across your lips as your faces are inches apart. Finally, he leans in, closer the gap and kissing you.
Your hopeless romantic heart can't take it. Kissing the popular hot guy in the rain after what was basically a love confession? It's like something straight out of a movie.
He breaks the kiss for a second, eyes fluttering down at you before his kisses you again. This time, it's hungrier, pushing you back as you grab his shirt. Pulling him back and into your house, he slams the door behind him as you drop your bag on the floor with a heavy thump.
Almost immediately, he grabs you again, pushing you back into the wall of your hallway. You hum into his mouth, his hands coming to your waist, yanking your body closer to his. You're both damp and in uncomfortable clothes, but neither if you could care less as you drip on the floor.
Feeling more bold, you pull on his bottom lip with your teeth, making him grunt slightly before your tongues brush against one another.
Make out session is quick to become more heated as you graze your fingers over his abs through his shirt, which is sticking to him like glue. He senses your want for more, moving one of his hands to lift his shirt (struggling because wet clothes suck) before firmly pressing your hand to his mid-drift.
He breaks the kiss, his eyes flickering as you gently touch his bare skin, your eyes on his chiselled form. He sucks in a deep breath, his chest rising and falling.
It's almost like a drug. You're barely doing anything but he's never felt like this before. It's not like Minho is inexperienced due to a few hook-ups at parties. But, this is new.
He's literally getting drunk off of your touch. And you can tell.
Having Minho reduced to putty in your hands sends a flush of heat to your core. Dangerously lowering your hand, you brush against the V line poking out of his tightening trousers.
He mumbles your name, a rasp to his voice, almost like he's in some kind of pain as he speaks into your mouth. He dips towards you, but instead of kissing you, his lips come to your neck.
You exhale, the air shaking at it leaves your lungs. He moves lower, your free hand coming to back of his neck and playing with his wet hair.
When he reaches your collarbone, your phone starts buzzing again.
Harriet, again.
He pulls away, raising an eyebrow at you as you pull your phone out of the baggy pocket of the gym shorts. "Sorry," you mumble, "I gotta..."
He nods. "Yeah, go ahead."
You inwardly cringe as you pick up the phone.
"Bro, are you alive?" She says the second the line connects.
"Yeah, I'm alive, Harry- I'm home now."
"Great, well I was thinking we can do out project of the Battle of the Somme, or maybe-"
"Wait, I'm, uh, I'm a bit busy- can I call you back?" You definitely have to have that interesting conversation with her, but hopefully you don't have to do it in front of Minho.
"What? Why? Why do you sound like you've ran a marathon? What's going on with you?"
"Look, I'm fine. I'll call you back."
"Wha-" you hang up, taking a deep breath as you lean back against the wall.
Minho chuckles. "We should, uh, probably take things a bit slower."
"Yeah," you clear your throat, "you're probably right."
"So, about that date- you down?"
You smile, nodding. "Yeah, that sounds great."
"Cool. I should probably get your number, huh?"
"Yeah, that would be smart."
You exchange numbers, making some small and slightly awkward small talk when the door opens.
Your Mom, who looks like she's just had the worst day, freezes. Her eyes flickering between you and Minho.
None of you say anything for a good thirty seconds as your mother takes in the scene of her daughter and this random boy dripping in her hallway, both clearly flustered whilst Minho's shirt is still slightly raised.
And where are your pants?
"Hi, Mrs (L/N)," Minho gives an awkward wave to her.
"I can explain." You say.
"I don't want to know," she brushes past you, going further into the house, leaving you be.
Both you and Minho exchange looks before bursting out laughing.
Maybe Minho wasn't joking, but you have a feeling that this specific moment is definitely going to be in the future.
Tumblr media
This was actually very fun to write, and I actually got to use my actual science qualifications to use for a change. It's nice to change up things now and then.
I hope you guys enjoyed :))
On the casually insane antics of Illusionist!Gale…
I don’t usually wax poetic about the blorbos on main, but I keep thinking about one specific aspect of Gale’s act II romance scene that makes me completely feral.
Sure, it’s impressive that he can project a pretty aurora into the sky, and recreate his rooms in Waterdeep from memory. And maybe somebody with better knowledge of 5e spellcasting rules has a really mundane explanation of this and it’s nbd (if so don’t tell me XD)…
… but purely based on what we’re being shown, Gale just blithely conjures an illusory copy of The Art of the Night — and with enough detail — that he can then use it to simultaneously cast a second spell (when he has Tav place their hand on the diagrams in the book) that transports two souls into the Weave? And is presumably maintaining concentration on both? While also blowing Tav’s mind?
It’s one thing to be able to cast/maintain two spells at once; but that’s not even the whole of it; he’s casting the second spell using materials he imagined into existence with the first…
Maybe my Tav and I are just hopeless smitten nerds (we are), but that’s some Inception, dream-within-a-dream fuckery. Gale mentions he can’t create such elaborate illusions very often, and it’s fair to assume that he was referring to the scale or the grandeur of it; but the multi-channel processing is so much more galaxy-brain, imo? And at that level of detail?? Babygirl’s got photographic memory in that terrifying tadpoled head of his, on top of raw magic talent.
And let’s not even get into the combat implications of being able to just pull entirely functional spellscrolls out of thin air, even if only on occasion. At that point, what’s the actual difference between illusion and reality? God!Gale may not be an emotionally healthy ending for him, but with illusory talent like that, it’s easy to understand how quickly the lines blurred for him—even without a heavy helping of hubris dumped on top…
[Karlach voice, rubbing the back of my neck] Anyway, what were we talking about….?
The untouchable girl // Eddie Munson
Summary: Could Dustin possibly help Eddie with his hopeless crush?
Pairing: Eddie Munson x female reader
Warnings: swearing?
A/N: back again obsessed over Eddie Munson, disclaimer I'm still not a native English speaker so please be nice about my grammar. I also hate to re-read what I wrote so if something is not understandable sorry.
Tumblr media
Y/N Y/L/N wasn't an ordinary student at Hawkins High. She in fact created one of the biggest dramas the school has ever seen while being the daughter of the principal.
In her freshman year, Y/N became a cheerleader and seemed to have a perfect life. She was beautiful, smart, popular and of course like almost every cheerleader she had a basketball player boyfriend.
Her makeup and outfit were always perfect and the way she walked in the halls, it was like a breath of fresh air. Until that one day at the end of May.
After the Hawkins Tigers had another massive win in the season of course they went to celebrate. Y/N had to miss out on the party, her mother insisted that she had to be home for a big family dinner because of some relatives she didn't even remember. She had been taught to be a good girl and had no intention to go against her mother for a stupid party. Maybe she should have.
The next day in school was a living hell, everyone was talking about how her boyfriend fucked her best friend at the party and even though they both tried to deny it to her, the hickies on their necks weren't lying. What happened next was something that shook the entire school. Y/N slapped both of them and tried to rip out Tiffany's hair. She got suspended, kicked out of the cheerleader team and we don't even want to get started on how mad her mother was.
And that was when Y/N decided that she didn't want to be the picture-perfect golden kid anymore. Her grades did not drop, but her style changed completely. Not just in clothing and makeup. She was still kind (mostly), but cared less about people's opinions and wasn't scared to stand up for herself or someone she loved.
That's how she somehow became friends with the Hellfire Club. Some dumbass basketball players were bothering Mike Wheeler and Dustin Henderson after school, all Y/N knew was that they were freshmen and complete nerds. Which is not a good combo.
"Look man why can't you just leave us alone, we literally did nothing to you." - begged Dustin.
"Yeah, Chris, why can't you just leave them alone?" - joined in Y/N.
"Oh look, who it is. The one and only Y/N Y/L/N, cheerleader to a little noisy bitch." - laughed Chris until Y/N went and punched him right in the face. But more importantly right in front of Eddie Munson.
"Woah, Woah, Woah what is going on here Henderson?"
"Chris was bullying us and Y/N hit him."
"Y/N? The principal's daughter saved your asses?"
"Is that so unbelievable Munson?" - Y/N joined their conversation.
"You standing up against another basketball dickhead? No, but judging by your shoes your high heels weren't made for fighting."
"Well, you shouldn't judge a girl by her shoes, Munson. But from as much as I know about you, you probably don't have much experience with any girl." Y/N walked past him, shoulders touching.
As Y/N was rolling her eyes, Eddie felt himself falling for her. He had a crush on her since the first time he saw her but this new Y/N is even better.
"Dude, you have a weird look on your face."
"Shut up, Henderson."
Eddie in fact did not had much sleep that night. He was way too focused on how could he ask Y/N out when ever since Andrew broke her heart no one could ever get close to her. Anyone who asked her out had been brutally rejected. Eddie did not wanted to go through that so he created his "evil plan". From what she did, Eddie suspected that maybe she has some sympathy towards Henderson and Wheeler which is good because he's friends with them. The plan was easy, Henderson somehow needs to befriend her, and then maybe if Dustin talks enough on his behalf Y/N would slowly start to like him and will say yes if he asks her out. After all, she has to have a heart somewhere under that wall she created.
"Eddie, with all respect you have no chance with her and this plan will never work."
"Henderson, with zero respect, I don't give a shit please just try it."
"Alright, I will because we're friends but don't have high hopes."
At lunch break after a lot of teasing from Eddie, Dustin approached Y/N.
"Heeey, Y/N!"
"Hi, um..."
"Oh right, my name is Dustin Henderson. You can call me Dustin. I-I didn't have the chance to thank you for saving us from Chris."
"It's honestly nothing that you need to thank for Dustin. I don't like seniors bugging freshmen it's pretty annoying and unfair."
"Yes, but still, you were the only one who stopped."
"People can be cruel when it's not their problem. Do you want to sit down?" Y/N was alone at her table at the moment, her best friend Jessica was absent for the day. After a quick glance at Eddie - who looked pretty nervous - Dustin sat down to eat with her.
"Sooo Dustin... Why exactly did Munson send you here?" - asked Y/N while casually looking down at her food while Dustin choked on his own.
"Wha-what are you talking about?"
"Oh please, when I was 6 I was at the beach with my older sister and her friends, that was the first time we were alone without parents and she immediately made me ask a boy out for her. Cut the bullshit Dustin, I like you don't make me mad."
"Agh Y/N, he's gonna kill me, I promise I told him it was bullshit and it won't work. He has a crush on you but he has no idea how to ask you out because he's afraid that you will reject him."
"Ohohoho so the big Eddie Munson is afraid of me rejecting him?"
"Yes, absolutely."
"Well, this should be fun" - chuckled Y/N as she stood up and started walking towards the Hellfire Club's table while Dustin was muttering 'shit, shit, shit" in the background.
"Munson can we talk in private?" - Eddie was shocked to say at least when Y/N popped that question.
"You know I really don't appreciate you sending that child to make me soft so maybe I'll date you" - Eddie acted dumb for some time but had to give in.
"Okay, I'll admit it wasn't my brightest idea but I was up all night thinking about how I could get close to you without you pushing me away."
"You did what? Eddie Munson the guy who gives the least fuck about anything in the world was up all night thinking how could he ask me out?"
"Well, get ready Y/L/N because I'm about to spill a lot of my secrets. Do you remember when you said I have no experience with girls? You were right, but do you want to know the reason why? The reason is that I had feelings for you since the first time you walked into this goddamn school, I kinda wished that you will be close to me somehow even though I knew that I couldn't have you. You had to go and date that dickhead because that's what cheerleaders do, date basketball players. It was breaking my heart when he cheated on you, I wanted to make him regret what he did to you but we haven't even spoken a word Y/N. I thought that it will go away, it's just a stupid crush but it's been three fucking years and you just became more and more wonderful. I try to act like a tough guy but on the inside, I'm really not. After all this shit I just spit out I'm really embarrassed so please either tell me how I can win you over or reject me nicely so I can try to move on with my life."
It was probably the first time Y/N was speechless ever since the cheating scandal, it was also the first time when her heart fluttered again with love for a boy. Not trusting herself with words this time, Y/N decided to embrace Eddie in a massive hug. He needed a few seconds until he realized what was going on but then hugged her back just as strongly. After a while, Eddie felt a drop of tear on his neck coming from Y/N.
"Hey, are you alright?" - he asked softly.
"Please don't give up on me." - Y/N answered still sniffling into his neck.
"I would never princess."
That was the start of the beautiful relationship between Y/N Y/L/N and Eddie Munson. From that day, Eddie picked Y/N up every single morning, brought her flowers every Monday (from God knows where), and did everything in his powers to win her over even if we were talking about bringing her chocolate when she was on her period or just simply being her island when everything went wrong. Eventually, with her help, he finally graduated in 1986 and left the good old Hawkins behind to start their new life. Let's just say, Eddie did not regret waiting three whole years to be with her. The sight of her cooking breakfast in his Hellfire Club shirt while their daughter sat on her waist made every single moment worth it.
Deciphering the DRDT Character Playlist
Hello DRDT community! @accirax and I took a look at the official character song playlist [remade version bc it got deleted or privated] and decided to take our own shot at figuring out whose is whose and what it means. It's pretty late, but we have at least some sort of a guess with reasoning for every song!
We used a combination of Genius lyrics, the vocaloid lyrics wiki, and google translation of Japanese lyrics in the YouTube description to get a decently functional interpretation of every song. Our theory goes through the songs in the order they show up on the playlist (we're pretty positive it isn't kill order), which means our confidence varies heavily from song to song. With that being said, let's go!
Diamond is Unbreakable by Yunno Kago: Ace Markey
Tumblr media
This song does not have many lyrics, so a lot of our guess is based on vibes (though it gives much more than some other songs). The rock instrumental with more yell-based vocals feels like it suits Ace though, and I feel safe to say that Ace has had a breakdown (and may have many more in the future).
Sing Along by Sturgill Simpson: Teruko Tawaki
Tumblr media
This song fits Teruko quite well. It has an edgier sound to it, but it isn't completely uncaring if you look at the lyrics.
I can't go on living alone now that you're gone You done me wrong, so here's your song
It reminds me of the scene where she plays with the cacti. She clearly misses Xander (and possibly others in her past), but that obviously doesn't stop her from feeling betrayed by them either.
There are a lot of lyrics about bitterness too (ex. "words can stab as deep as night," "bitter air and the winds of spite"), which reflect how Teruko has been treating the rest of the cast in Chapter 2. It's a duality of caring too much and acknowledging the harshness of the world, which encapsulates Teruko's character quite well.
RUNAWAY by half alive: Hu Jing
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, we were struggling on this one. This song is pretty much entirely predictive of a character arc that Hu might have later on. We're predicting this based on Hu's secret quote, which is basically the only reason we gave this song to her: "I want to pay for what I've done. But even then, I still want to live."
This implies that she has not paid for "what [she's] done," which probably relates to her secret. I know a lot of people think she might be the hopeless child, but I'm far more partial to the theory that Hu is the one who poisoned her competition. If she hasn't paid for it, it's possible she feels like she ran away, from the situation which could open the door for her handling those feelings later on.
cartoons by Louie Zong: Rose Lacroix
Tumblr media
This entire song is about drawing and thought processes, which both relate to Rose's character pretty strongly. The recurring lyric of "it's all just cartoons in [her] head" makes me think of her photographic memory, which takes real life and permanently stores it in her mind.
There are also lyrics like "feeling every day the same" and "trying to make that old deadline" that strongly relate to her background with the Spurling Foundation. She feels like she's just watching the rest of her life go by as a corporate slave, and those feelings are wrapped up in a light and airy song, matching Rose's demeanor.
asymptotic by Louie Zong: Charles Cuevas
Tumblr media
This is a silly little nerd love song. As a CharWhit shipper, I definitely think that there's a strong chance that this relates to Charles' feelings about Whit, calling him a "cutie face in x-y space" and other such things. It's pretty simple, but it's true that, romantic or not, a lot of Charles' character arc thus far has revolved around his relationship with Whit and realizing that he does enjoy spending time with his classmates.
However, notably, there's also the lyric "I'll forget," which made me start thinking about Charles' past he forgot about.
Asymptotic, obliquely Here's the point of this speech As close as we could ever get, you'll be just out of reach
This reads to me as being about Charles' memories or the older brother he doesn't remember losing. As close as he can get to remembering or understanding what happened through things like the secrets motive, it won't be the same as actually returning to that past or remembering it in full. Maybe that's reading into things a little too hard, but I think the interpretation is there to be read.
A Mistaken Belief of Love by Niru Kajitsu: Eden Tobisa
Tumblr media
I'll be direct: this relates to our theories about how Eden is the Chapter 2 killer. I'm a particular proponent of the interpretation that Eden didn't believe Arei when she said she wanted to be friends and decided she wanted to escape back to her old life, to the girl she kissed. I'm not going to go into that Eden theory now, but @/1moreff-creator and @/thebadjoe have a great thread going back and forth which goes over a lot of what I personally believe to be true.
If you assume that Eden is the killer and wanted to be Arei's friend but gave up on the possibility when Arei snapped at her, the lyrics start to make sense. "Then I'll kill you at our rendezvous" would clearly relate to Eden summoning Arei to the playground just to kill her. "I just wanted to mistakenly believe that you loved me" relates to Eden's feelings towards Arei and the rest of the class, but that "mistaken belief" was shattered, causing her to kill.
Shunran by John/TOOBOE: Arei Nageishi
Tumblr media
This song chronicles Arei's entire character arc, from prologue to death. It starts out much more aggressive and unfriendly, saying things like "I won't pay attention to small fry" and "I become angry easily." However, there's a recurring lyric that shows how she actually feels.
They say that praying to be loved is a sin. It has such a sweet scent.
Arei desperately wants to be loved, for people to be nice to her, but she's learned over the course of her life that she couldn't have that. Still, she can't help but want to be loved, so even when she knows that David is a manipulator, she still listens to his words. Even when she knows she's been awful to Eden, she swears she'll do anything to prove to Eden that she's serious, that she really does want to be her friend.
I pledged a ceasefire. My personality peeled off and fell because I have the courage to accept disappointment
As the song progresses, that desperate desire to be loved creeps its way into the actions the singer takes as well. Arei was willing to put aside her meanness she learned as a defense and try to stop the fighting, try to become friends, because she's strong enough to try even if she might fail. Through it all, all she wants is to be loved.
Yesman by Niru Kajitsu and Hachiya Nanashi: Nico Hakobyan
Tumblr media
This song has a lot of lyrics relating to how the singer expresses scorn or insults. We know that this is a focal point of Nico's struggles with communication: they don't know what comes across as hostile or helpful.
However, as the song progresses, it gets more purposefully aggressive. There's a particular set of lines that seem to relate to how Nico interacts with Ace. They can tell Ace that they hate him, directly, and no one even blames them.
You could say that and you're still just a kid. How amazing!
This, in my mind, relates to Nico saying that they'll kill Ace (and clearly meaning it), but Hu still babies them. They can get away with all kinds of things.
There's no reason for me to turn back now, huh? I was caught in my own trap
Nico then, realizing that they can get away with a lot, goes after Ace, trying to literally kill him. They were caught, though, explaining the second lyric here.
The song also has a prominent lyric: "I'm an introvert, just waiting." There are variations on this, but I think it gets across the core idea: Nico is quiet, but they're still a part of the story the whole time, waiting for an opportunity to get their way.
Undead Enemy by Suzumu and Giga P: David Chiem
Tumblr media
This song hinges around David's false persona of smiles and motivation and his true self who hates everything and everyone.
For whatever reason, he put on a mask symbolizing The leading role he had yearned for in the past.
Here, David is choosing to put on that motivational speaker persona.
And, from the next day onward, The unhappy boy's smile did not falter, He was even loved by someone
David then keeps up that happy and inspirational self, without fail, so that the world will love and accept him as the Ultimate they expect him to be.
However, the lyrics are filled with more hateful lines that sound more like him in Episode 11.
Slander and criticize, and then, I won't need anyone else. Just leave me alone
I act spitefully in disgust and force a smile
While he pretends to be happy and good, he knows himself to be much worse. This song focuses on those true colors.
Drawing Pins by Nothing but Thieves: Levi Fontana
Tumblr media
Levi is a very pensive character. The main line of the song is "tell me what you did it for, 'cause I can't figure it out." That could relate to Levi's apparent struggles to understand others and what the "correct" thing to do in social situations is, like when he asks others how to handle the situation with Ace. I also like the interpretation that he could be talking to himself, wondering why he did what he did in the past. (Whatever mysterious past Levi has, it's clear that he did some things he's not thrilled about, and he seems to have a lot of feelings surrounding it.)
What do I have to do To be loved, loved by you
I'm personally not an AceVi shipper, but this line would definitely relate to Ace. Levi messed up in the first trial, threatening Ace, but in Chapter 2, he's trying to make up for it. Nothing he seems to do works, though, so he's at a loss as to what he could possibly do to make it up to him.
Hi-Fi Evolution Theory by Keu Studio: Veronika Grebenshchikova
Tumblr media
Disclaimer, we had to put this song through google translate, so our lyrics might not be entirely correct.
Given that, though, I'm pretty confident this song must be Veronika's. There are a lot of lyrics that indicate her, but the most important ones surround what we've most recently learned about her: she can't stand boredom and will do just about anything for fun.
But is it selfish to have fun?
The one who laughs last is the winner
Even though Veronika knows that enjoying the killing game or possibly even working against the group's best interests in it is stupid at best and evil at worst, she'll still do it as long as it keeps her entertained. If she's selfish, she's selfish; she'll do it either way.
tip toes by half alive: Min Jeung
Tumblr media
This song heavily ties into Min's outlook which she explains in her bonus episode. The lyrics mention a "need to be known," or a "pride" that's "screaming." She internalized a core need to become an Ultimate to keep her going forward and to preserve her hope.
She does want to change her behavior, though.
My future will listen to me, Listen to me, listen to me
Min is trying desperately to find a life for herself now that she's become an Ultimate. She wants to learn how to live after she's achieved the goal that her entire life has centered around. This song is her searching for the life that she wants to live in spite of her previous experience.
The song also sounds sort of desperate with its repetition of "listen to me" and the overall vibe of the instrumental. This fits in with Min's increasing desperation as she realizes, at the end of the first trial, that she won't have a future to figure out anymore.
Polygonal by fallstay (ふぁるすてぃ): Xander Matthews
Tumblr media
This one was also put through google translate, so apologies for any mistranslations!
This song makes sense for Xander if you consider his clear survivor's guilt, visible through both his bonus episode and his secret quote, which is, in the most literal way possible, the dictionary definition of survivor's guilt. It mentions a "life full of mistakes" and describes other similar thoughts.
I'm dizzy and it hurts so much that I feel like throwing up
The urge to scream and someone's loud sobbing
That's my pain
These all feel like ways Xander interprets his past, which is his pain. We already know that Teruko accidentally running into him and hitting his eye hurt so badly he passed out, which is a step beyond "dizzy." Someone could be sobbing about his past; maybe it's even him. The things in his past that haunt him are what shape who he is and his actions, and that's what this song is about.
Spitfire (05 Version) by The Prodigy: J Rosales
Tumblr media
This one has like one lyric. The vibes fit J though, and I don't really know who else's it would be or what other song would be hers, so it stays.
desk rotation by RQ laji-2: Arturo Giles
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna lie. This is an instrumental. We have no idea what it means. This was process of elimination. I don't know what other song Arturo's would be so he gets this one.
(In all seriousness, you COULD give this one to Hu because it's music and she's a musician, give Arei the more hopeful RUNAWAY and give Arturo Shunran. The beginning of Shunran fits him decently, but I think the interpretation sort of falls apart in the middle of the song, at least given what I know about his character, and I think it fits Arei much better.
After we read some other theories, too, we think there's a viable shuffle that goes like this:
desk rotation: Hu (musical connection) tip toes: Arturo (generally prideful, future emphasis contrasting with his secret forcing him to think about the past) asymptotic: Min (abstracted to apply to the life she wants to seek out, math works as Ultimate Student) RUNAWAY: Charles (relating to him "running" from his past memories, positive growth arc)
While I still like our initial interpretations for Charles asymptotic and Min tip toes, I like the handling of RUNAWAY and desk rotation better with this one.)
For whatever it's worth, I also think there's a slight possibility that desk rotation is a placeholder song. It's a complete instrumental (all other songs have at least SOME lyrics), so it wouldn't be too insane to me if they had a song that they decided was just too spoiler-y to be released to the public. In that case, I think it's possible desk rotation will one day be replaced with a different song. Realistically, though, it's probably just here and we have to figure out what the hell it means.
Good Grief by Bastille: Whit Young
Tumblr media
Whit obviously lost his mother at some point, who he clearly idolizes. You can see the glowing way he talks about her in the laundry room with Teruko and Charles, and his secret quote is literally "We tend to idolize the dead." He loves his mother, but given his secret, it's clear that she is dead.
This song is about grief. Whit represses a lot of his emotions, so I expect he hasn't yet felt his grief in full and hasn't processed it. He has, however, made it very clear that he struggles with loneliness, and that has a lot to do with his loss. I think that, over the course of the story, he's going to have to actually process grief and experience sadness. While it's possible that'll just be due to the feelings he has surrounding his mother, given that he's in a killing game, I think that he'll have to confront personal loss again to have this arc.
Regrettably, I think that that'll probably come in the form of Charles dying, likely as a Chapter 3 victim. Others have theorized on that, but suffice it to say that, narratively and based on hints they've dropped, I think it's probably true ( :( ). Whit, as he clearly cares about Charles, would then be confronted with grief again. He'd have to endure it and learn to deal with the loss.
On the plus side, I'd expect he'd be likely to survive afterwards.
Rebels Rewatch: "A Fool's Hope"/"Family Reunion And Farewell"
*singing*
~I'm glad that you were here with me/Here at the end of all things.~
Live reaction version.
Yeah be prepared for a lot of Lord of the Rings quotes and song lyrics in this one, lol.
Hey, don't blame me, the writers were the ones who made it clear they were hopeless Tolkien nerds.
And yes I am packaging both (all three?) episodes together. This is how it was aired, this is how it was experienced, you're gonna get the full treatment.
This does mean though that I will be very stingy with the pictures. Apologies. Blame Tumblr, not me.
Anyway, we start off the finale by gathering all the disparate parties that we completed the Friendship Fetch Quests for. Rex, Kallus, Gregor, Wolffe, Hondo, Melch, and Ketsu are all Back For The Finale. Which is a trope that I absolutely love in all shapes and forms, and it's even more appropriate for this show given that Ezra's main character "superpower" is literally making friends.
The connections and bridges he built all come back to aide him, not for any selfish motives of their own or because "the enemy of my enemy", but simply because Ezra has asked them to come.
"It's for Ezra," is all Hera has to say, and Hondo is immediately, genuinely pledging, "For that boy, there is nothing I would not do."
It is... incredibly heartwarming.
And I told y'all Hondo was a romantic at heart, and genuinely misses the days when the Jedi were around. And also that in the Rebellion Era, the Jedi still represent the nobility and goodness of the past.
After the titlecard, which still has no fanfare, we get this scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Come, you all knew I was going to cap it. Sabine's concern is so soft, the hand she places on Ezra's shoulder and the way she asks if he's okay so gentle.
The visual similarity in this scene and two scenes prior to this are interesting. This scene is firstly visually reminiscent of the Kanan-Hera scene in the beginning of "Kindred" (inviting comparison to the main canon ship of the show), and also the Kanan-Ezra scene at the beginning of "Jedi Night" (which emphasizes again that Kanan and Sabine are the two Most Important People in Ezra's life).
Ezra sits in the exact same pose, in the exact same place, that we saw Kanan meditating at, suggesting that he is also hearing the echoes of things to come, having similar visions of the future. This is certainly supported by his dialogue, where he mentions, "Something's changed... Something's happening." and that he's had a vision of Palpatine sending Thrawn back to Lothal.
Honestly I'm surprised it took Palpatine so long, lol. Thrawn: Treason supposedly takes place over the course of... a week? And the events of "Rebel Assault" to "A World Between Worlds" can't have been more than three or four days.
(This is why I reject the official canon timeline for Rebels, Season Four's events are crammed into the space of a month or two AT BEST.)
But anyway, Palpatine is pretty pissed off about the whole Temple thing so yeah, he's sending Thrawn back to retrieve Ezra personally. This seems to be a big ol' sticking point for our favorite blue bastard because he is NOT HAPPY when he turns back up.
You can't blame him really. He'd barely left Lothal and his TIE Defender project got literally blown up, so he had to spend the budget meeting arguing for what was essentially a smoking crater, and the wager he made with Krennic et. all. ultimately went nowhere because he lost on a technicality, and then the Emperor starts questioning his loyalty because his old Ascendancy friends showed up during the shenanigans, and then Palpatine dismissed him to go clean up the mess on Lothal and fetch him back a teenager for Sith sorcery bullshit.
...He'd had a very bad week, is what I'm saying.
I got off topic there, where was I?
Oh yes, Ezra's risky gamble. Fun fact, that was the original title of the episode, "Ezra's Gamble". I assume they axed it because it would give too much away. And like I've said before, if they could have avoided showing Ryder in footage taking the Dome for the finale previews, they could have really sold his false betrayal.
Pryce does not look like she's having a good week either lol.
Ezra continues to be cryptic about things, yet another hint to us that he's gotten "insider information" from the Force, as it were, and has made plans according to multiple possible outcomes. This is just one of the reasons why he outmaneuvered Thrawn, the other major one being that there was no possible way for Thrawn to predict Ezra throwing space whales at him lol.
This interference by the Force could have been a bit of a Deus Ex Machina but I think it's pretty clear that the Force only shared what might happen and left Ezra to figure out a solution on his own.
And his solution was space whales. XD
That comes later though, after this very risky gambit with letting Ryder broadcast their location to Pryce. A lot of things could have gone wrong. Hera might not have made it back in time. Ryder could have decided to genuinely betray them. Rukh could have gotten in a lucky strike and incapacitated him.
We are apparently putting a LOT of trust in the Force today.
This action setpiece is a great one so I'll just cover a few of my favorite highlights:
Tumblr media
All the shots that track Sabine as she jetpacks around the battlefield.
Tumblr media
Ezra versus Rukh.
Tumblr media
Zeb going full feral with the minigun.
And of course on the other side of things Hondo trying to count the number of times he'd been collided with pulling off this exact maneuver they're using lol. The blockade seems to have thinned from "Rebel Assault", not as many capital ships?, so maybe I was right in that Thrawn called for reinforcements to repel the attack. Still gives Ezra the highest kill count by proxy at the end of things.
Oh and once again there's a moment where someone threatens Sabine in order to force Ezra to surrender. <3 Love that.
Pryce is awfully smug until the Ghost shows up, lol. (To heroic Main Theme fanfare into the Rebel Alliance theme of course.) Someone on the writing team understood the power of a good Eucatastophe. (Tolkien term, it means "the sudden happy turn to good".)
The clones also get a leitmotif fanfare as they debark the Ghost.
And we get a lovely Force Theme as Ezra gets his most badass shot.
Tumblr media
Hell yeah.
The wolves sequence is amazing. The dramatic chorus, the chaos, the wolves skirting the veeeeeeeeeeery boundary of what's allowed on a Y7 show lol.
You know some of the troopers got ate.
One last shoutout to Hera using the Ghost to straight up smack a gunship out of the air and now we've come to the end of the setpiece. It can be hard sometimes to fill a full episode with one action sequence but this episode pulls if off perfectly. It never feels stale or boring, there are multiple bits and moments that just work. (I've always loved the moment where Ezra lunges for Ruhk's energy staff and uses the momentum of Rukh lunging for the same to straight up yeet him off the platform.)
Ezra's completely nonphased at Hondo's slung arm shoulder hug now aww.
Moving right along into the next segment...
Tumblr media
This soft intro with Ezra talking to his parents' picture, telling them they are the inspiration behind his actions, how he wishes they could meet his new family, how he knows what he needs to do, but he's afraid. T_T Hgn he's precious and so mature and I love him so so much.
He knows what he might have to do, guys. He knows he might never actually see Lothal again and he's still prepared to make that sacrifice if he has to.
He's SUCH a good Jedi you guys I can't.
Kallus gets a token line here about his defection which is... okay. But again, really needed more from this arc for it to have a full impact.
"We come to it at last; the great battle of our time."
One casual wolf threat later, Pryce has agreed to transmit the victory codes and our heros fly off to the capitol to pull off their boldest venture yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will never ever get over this moment. Sabine so attuned to Ezra even without the Force that she can tell just by looking at him how distracted and sad and scared he is.
How Ezra so clearly wants to tell her but holds back, and substitutes instead a declaration of absolute faith and trust.
And how she sees right through that and knows Something Weird Be Up With The Boy, Yo.
But like so many other conversations between the two, things are left unfinished, the mission and circumstances taking precedence.
Love the two quipping back to Pryce tho. <3
Still a crapton of air pollution over the city. This would clear up dramatically in the climax, for a bit of a symbolic moment.
There are SO many callbacks to previous moments in the show in this sequence, I noted a couple of them in my original liveblog but I'm certain there's a few I missed.
The music cue is great too, as is the effective silence once they've taken the bridge. A little bit of musical breathing space before things get hairy again, courtesy of Rukh ambushing the others back at base and stealing a gunship.
You know? I'm not quite sure what the plan was for if they managed to destroy the Dome before Thrawn got back. Seems a little shortsighted to blow up all the fighters and equipment and your city shields. A single Star Destroyer is more than capable of leveling cities and there are several in orbit around Lothal.
This honestly lends even more credence to the idea that, Force visions aside, Ezra was largely making this up as he went and had NO idea what he was doing lol.
Indy Ploy versus Xanatos Gambit. Indy Ploy wins by virtue of there was no way the Xanatos Gambit could predict the level of crazy Ezra's ideas were.
Tumblr media
Amazing how empty the streets are when they've been emptied of Imperials.
Thrawn arrives, per schedule, and parks right over the Dome so that can't launch, lest they create catastrophic collateral damage. Important to note, for the people who want to nitpick No Endor Holocaust scenarios, the show specifically details that the city shields put out by the Dome deflected the Star Destroyer wreckage when the purrgil came, and that the Rebels directed the Dome to explode over the bay, not the city. The Cadet Academy is also a completely different building.
I mean, sure the debris from the Dome probably isn't great for the bay's ecosystem but honestly the water was probably already super polluted from the factories, they had to clean it up anyway.
Where was I? Right, Thrawn getting to be really awesomely creepy. The placid, "Are you quite finished?" gives me chills every time. Once again let me praise the expression work on this show because Ezra's soft Oh Crap look is amazing.
The dawning horror on Sabine's face too.
And then this music cue! The tension is drawn out just long enough for us to fully appreciate the horror.
Tumblr media
:((((((
They even give us a nice wide-shot to appreciate just how much damage just those few seconds of bombardment did.
I had a rant here originally about the dumbass headcanon that Thrawn targeted empty buildings in this sequence (that may or may not have originated from Timothy Zahn himself) but if you've been following me you already know how I feel about it. It's asinine and I won't entertain it. Moving on.
Backed into a corner, Ezra knows he has no choice but to give himself up to Thrawn. This track in the score, "Sabine Sees Ezra" perfectly captures the sorrow and drama. It starts with a strained version of Ezra's theme, that doesn't resolve, fading instead into mournful original strings. Hera's entreaties for him to stay are painful, we can't help but think of what must be in her head--she just lost Kanan, she's afraid to lose him too. But Ezra is a Jedi. He is the guardian of Lothal. So he must make the sacrifice no one else can. He can't choose to be selfish.
So while Hera and the others try to figure out a way around the problem of Thawn, Ezra goes to confront it head on, secretly signaling to Chopper, who has been entrusted with so much of this plan.
And Sabine sees him.
Tumblr media
It's a consistent theme throughout their relationship. She sees him. She notices him. She's attuned to when he's upset. She perceives him in a way that's unique from everyone else.
And he trusts her so implicitly that he silently asks for her help here, and after a moment of agony she does it, because she trusts him too.
These two just break my heart. :(
Sabine keeps looking back at the empty spot where he had been. T_T
There's a theme here about attachment and loss again, and it comes from Sabine. Like a Jedi, she's able to let go of her fear of loss and trust Ezra, whatever happens, and is able to encourage Hera to do the same. Her theme plays out here, strongly, before giving way to an excerpt of the Main Titles theme, uniting the Rebels in their heroism.
Ezra's theme playing again here, skittish and frightened. Once again the expression work is heartbreaking. Ezra looks like he's steeling himself, holding back his fear. He's resigned to his purpose, but that doesn't mean he's enjoying it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND NOW WE GET MY FAVORITE HANNIBAL LECTURE/SHUT UP HANNIBAL EXCHANGE! :D
The dialogue between Thrawn and Ezra here is so good.
"You could have chosen to let your people die. However... you chose to be a Jedi." Jedi cannot help what they are, the Jedi Code is like an itch he cannot help it *sobs in Kenobi feelings*.
Thrawn pontificating about how petty things like ethics get in the way of being efficient. He picks at Ezra from several different angles in this conversation, first by deriding the moral code of the Jedi, then by pointing out that their righteousness did not save the Jedi in the end, all that's left are frightened poorly trained children--a clear dig at Ezra himself. He laments what a shame it is that the Jedi didn't apply their powers in a way he deems would have been effective, implicitly suggesting that the Jedi should have used their power to dominate and conquer--Might Makes Right, after all, if you have the means to achieve a certain end you should use it.
Ezra tanks that calmly, pointing out that the Force isn't a weapon.
So Thrawn switches tactics, now lamenting that he must destroy Lothal (no you don't you asshole you can literally just disobey orders and defect, the total genocide of Lothal is entirely within your power to prevent) and oh, isn't it such a shame about Sabine.
And that hits Ezra's berserk trigger lol.
He snaps back at Thrawn. You're a tyrant, a bully, you didn't make or earn any of this, you just took it because you could, because you think your strength makes you right.
Thrawn essentially confirms that, "Yeah, having power does make me right." before leading him down to where the Temple doors have been set up for his meeting with the Emperor. Which kind of makes me think Thrawn wanted the opportunity to dress Ezra down and soften him up for Palpatine's manipulations because he could have just had the troopers shove him into the hanger first thing.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The way Ezra keeps looking around in astonishment, wide-eyed, at the sight of the Temple doors.
Palpatine cloaks himself in white like an angel of light for this final temptation, wearing the guise of a friend or kindly old grandpa. It's every bit as unsettling as it seems.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile with the B-Squad, Mart reveals that--like Chopper--he has also been entrusted with a crucial part of Ezra's "Just in case" plan. (Theirs is an underrated friendship, fanficcers you have let me down, again, why do I have to write all the things I wanna see more of?)
That shot of the wolves running alongside and under the Ghost. *chef kiss*
I have no idea when Ezra found time to figure out a signal the purrgil would respond to but I very much want to see that scene.
Sabine: "He [Ezra] knows what he's doing." Lol are you sure about that, 'bine? I think he had no clue the whole purrgil thing would work.
Palpatine is so slimy here, ugh. Acting like he did Ezra a favor by desecrating the Jedi Temple. Ezra's all ready to fling back anything ol Sheev throws at him here until Palpatine takes aim right at the heart of his greatest weakness.
Because after all this time, Ezra has never quite fully gotten over and accepted the loss of his parents. He's still at heart a lost little boy who misses his mom and dad.
The score goes almost Stravinsky-esque here, suggesting the Faustian nature of the deal Sidious is offering.
Meanwhile down in the gullet of the Dome, the Rebels are working feverishly to regain control of the the shield generator. There's some great coordination here between the teams and the control, Sabine really shines as a leader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Word of God behind the scenes confirms Ezra is seeing THE day his parents were taken, his seventh birthday, when he could hear his mom and dad calling for him but didn't come because he was goofing off.
Hey uh, can this boy's life stop being ENDLESSLY SAD please? That'd be nice.
Love how Gregor calls for "something drastic" and Zeb immediately thinks, "Right, yeeting myself at the enemy." lol.
Gotta respect a man whose strategy is to fling himself full force at the enemy.
And the obligatory Make TCW Fans Cry Moment with Gregor here.
Palpatine keeps digging. This is your heart's desire isn't it? Don't you deserve this? All you have to do is open this one little door. He tries to keep Ezra's attention and focus on himself, even when Ezra asks what will happen to his friends if he makes this choice.
You can undo their deaths, Palpatine promises, about Ezra's parents. You can save them. I can help. It's the exact temptation he offered Anakin all those years ago.
"I have the power to give you what you want. You won't have to face this loss."
Like a devil, what he offers is a two-edged sword. What he is offering can't actually exist. Because if Ezra goes to be with his parents on the day they were arrested, how will he be able to make it here to open the door for Palpatine? Will Palpatine have to trap him in a closed loop, retrieve him from wherever he will end up in the alternate timeline, to ensure he can't fix this one fatal mistake?
See Palpatine doesn't care about breaking the timeline, he will gladly do it and rule over the ruins. But if Ezra reaches for this vision, he dooms his friends. He allows Palpatine to gain power beyond his wildest imaginings, turn himself into lord and master of time itself, a physical god.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Ezra must deny himself, accept the loss, and let go.
Tumblr media
And he does.
The Emperor's hologlamour flickering and failing as his rage ascends is really effectively creepy. Also HOW ABOUT THEM RETURN OF THE JEDI PARALLELS?
Years down the line, yet another pure-hearted Jedi boy will stand before the Emperor, throw his offer in his face, and tell him where to shove it. Even the dialogue mirrors Luke's.
"You're wrong. I have a family. I don't need anything from you."/"Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You've failed, Your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
"Unfortunate. Destroy him!"/"So be it, Jedi. If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed!"
Poetry. Pure poetry. <3
Ezra gets a nice little face off against the Royal Guards, with some lovely whump in the form of whatever those pikes are doing to him, but manages to weasel himself out of the situation. And then somehow fights his way all the way up to the bridge. So proud of him.
The Rebels get the shield up just in time to prevent Thrawn's full scale bombardment, Rukh frying rather dramatically in the process. Lol and ouch with how irreverent Zeb is over the comm.
So now all that's left to do is break the stalemate and remove Thrawn from the chessboard.
Tumblr media
HELL YES.
Oh hoooo man this twist isn't even really a twist it just makes too much sense for Ezra, for his character, for the themes of the show, for how to take Thrawn out as a threat while respecting his acumen as a strategist. (Gotta throw something at him he would never suspect lol.)
The musical build-up is amazing. Dooming low bass notes, drolling percussion. The strings build up, crescendo-ing.
AND THEN THE "WRATH OF NATURE" CUE FROM "THE CALL" COMES IN WITH GLORIOUS FULL ORCHESTRA.
The Hyperspace theme comes in as well, and the purrgil proceed to utterly decimate Thrawn's fleet. By proxy this gives Ezra probably the highest kill count on the show, as the purrgil must have taken out the orbital construction stations, a good chunk of the Star Destroyers up there, and all three of the ones above the city. (Somehow Palleon survives to join the Council of Evil in Mando Season 3 lol.)
Sabine looks SO confused, ha ha.
Tumblr media
What a great shot.
Thrawn tries to get in a final, Taking You With me speech only for Ezra to be like, "Joke's on you that was the plan all along. You're not taking me with you, I'm taking you with me."
I do love Thrawn's increasingly panicky WTF expressions as things progress.
THIS ADORABLE #MARRIED BANTER BETWEEN EZRA AND SABINE AND THEN HOW THEIR THEMES ARE TONALLY INTERMINGLED IN THIS CUE.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The way Ezra's left arm hangs limp after Thrawn shoots his shoulder and the pained grimace he gives when he turns around to seal the door behind them.
Tumblr media
He looks exhausted.
Pained grimace number two as Ezra raises his injured arm to wind up IN AN EXACT TABLEAU OF THE POSE KANAN HAD AT HIS OWN HEROIC SACRIFICE.
HELLO YES, ALSO ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS BETWEEN EZRA AND SABINE AS SHE BEGS HIM TO GET OFF THE CHIMAERA.
ALSO IT BEARS EMPHASIS BUT LOOK HOW THE GLASS SHARDS STILL WHEN EZRA RAISES HIS OTHER ARM.
EZRA IS LITERALLY HOLDING THE OXYGEN INSIDE THE BRIDGE WITH THE FORCE, WHILE HOLDING THRAWN AND THE DOOR IN PLACE, WITH AN INJURED ARM.
Ezra Bridger is the greatest shut up.
The purrgil charge up. Everything goes white. His theme bellows at full heroic volume and then...
Quiet.
Utter awed quiet.
Right, so you wanna know the other of the two times I cried at this show? Ezra's sacrifice right here. Waterworks.
"We set out to save the Shire, and it has been saved. But not for me. I have been too badly hurt. The last pages are for you, Sam."
Sabine is handed Ezra's lightsaber by Chopper, and takes up his mantle, finishing his mission and leading all the rest of them to safety as the launch the Dome and blow it. (Her journey to becoming co-protagonist is complete.)
Chopper gives us a final goodbye message from Ezra (that makes me sad again), and they soar over a triumphant freed populace.
Fade out and then...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*SOBS ABOUT THE BOOKENDS FOREVER*
Shot for shot. Shot. For. Shot. And I am UNDONE.
Lothal is free. The Empire never had a chance to retake it. Likely couldn't spare the manpower from the rest of the galaxy, first off, also replacing all those ships they had in orbit has gotta be expensive, and I suspect Palpatine just put glassing Lothal on hold until the Death Star was completed. And well... we know how that turned out lol.
The Fellowship broke, but they seem to all keep in touch, if Sabine's voiceover is any indication. Kanan's legacy lives on. Our crew found peace.
And last...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A sworn promise to find a precious friend and bring him back home.
The finale of Rebels is near perfection. With a very few quibbles here and there (the purrgil could have been just a smidgen more set up, Kallus's arc still needs to have some decent onscreen content for his redemption happy ending to be earned) it is the best Rebels has to offer.
The callbacks and bookends undo me. The music is full of wonderful dramatic cues. The animation is gorgeous. Everything comes to full completion and it is a very satisfying end.
Overall Season Thoughts:
Season Four is almost a bit nostalgic, returning to the tightly written narrative of the first season, but even more tightly tied together. None of the episodes feel wasted or superfluous. The major character death midway through is given plenty of narrative weight and time for the characters to adjust and grieve. Objectively it's probably the best season overall, none of the episodes are misses.
Even with the unanswered mysteries, the season feels solid, and a fitting conclusion to the overall Rebels saga.
---
And that was Star Wars: Rebels, the little show about a Found Family that could. It is my favorite new Star Wars content and what actually dragged me back into fandom after years away. It is heartwarming and exciting, poignant and hopeful and I'm so so glad I was taken on this journey.
Here's hoping the lost son of Lothal can make his way home soon.
I am giving the go ahead to go and analyze. For I too am foaming at the mouth for the info dump of analyzing and putting songs to fics. I can't not listen to hozier when i read your works now.
Your works are just hozier coded to me
(am gunna also start signin off uvu)
- a hungry raccoon 🦝
My Darling I am Hozier coded. I am in love with that man, and nearly all my WIPs have a Hozier title because I'm a huge nerd. (I even got to see him in concert in september AAAAH he was so good)
Actually the Cowboy AU is the only one that doesn't have a Hozier title. Ghost/Goose's official title it "Here's Hoping(Things Look Better on the Other Side)." Which I'm not planning on changing but "I'll Crawl Home to You" would also work really well. Anyway Ghoul being pretentious under the cut.
So I am going to preface this saying that I believe Hozier has said the song is about addiction, the way it starts sweet and then you can't get out. But I have my own thoughts because I'm a romantic, and you're going to listen to them. I am going to interpret this as Ghost telling folks about Goose.
"Boys, workin' on empty Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat? I just think about my baby I'm so full of love I could barely eat There's nothing sweeter than my baby I'd never want once from the cherry tree 'Cause my baby's sweet as can be She give me toothaches just from kissin' me"
OK verse 1. The first two lines are very much Ghost's time in the military. He's not really there, he's an empty person, a shell for the SAS to command, and he faces hell every day like that. He's hopeless, but he doesn't have a need for it, hell is an inevitability to him. Lines 3 and 4, I think that's again him in the military. He thinks about the life he's never going to have. He barely eats, he's in survival mode, there's not a life worth living for him so he only does what he needs to. Then with line 5 we meet Goose, and with line 6 Ghost decides he never wants anyone else. There's nothing sweeter than his baby, no one that takes him the way she does, she sees him for all that he is and she wants him anyway.
Then the last line of verse 1. UGH. The guilt. This is Price's kid. He loves her but she's bad for him, he can't have her. And Goose is still sweet to him, even when they both know there's no future for this, she still is sweet. AND IT HURTS. It hurts Ghost to be around her and so he pushes her away.
"Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin' in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin' up a fever I didn't care much how long I lived But I swear I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did"
Verse 2, we'll cover the chorus at the end. Yeah the sins. The SINS. Ghost pushing Goose away, but also a callback to how they met, to the bar and choosing each other. When Goose found him he wasn't a person, he was Ghost, he was bound for hell and nothing was going to lift him from the lake of fire. But then lines 3/4, Goose doesn't push to break his walls down, in fact she sets up her own. Stakes a flag on his head that say's "Goose's do not touch" and somehow that works. He has a safety net the likes of which he's never had before, and when he turns to look at Goose he realizes she doesn't have much either.
Line 4? She's given her whole life to a cause the same way he has, she's never made a choice that wasn't for someone else. There are expectations that she's taken on that no one should have asked her to. Ghost sees that, sees that he's a choice too and he has to decide if he's a good one. I think again(I know I've said this a million times) that Ghost has lived his career like he's dying. He's never cared about whether he makes it out alive, as long as the people he's watching over live it's fine. But Goose tells him, "you're not allowed to die" and he believes her. She never asks him what brought him to this point, but she's there when he's ready to tell her.
"My babe would never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don't forgive me I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissing on my baby And she put her love down soft and sweet In the low lamplight I was free Heaven and hell were words to me"
Verse 3, lfg. Despite being a worrier, Goose really doesn't worry over what Ghost did in special forces. He served under her father, and that's worth its weight in gold. For all his "I'm dangerous" talk, Ghost has never raised a hand to her, never tried to hurt her, and never done anything to make her think that Price was wrong to recruit him. For all the bad he may have done, Goose holds onto Ghost's hope that it was all for the greater good.
They we wrap up the verse, lines 3-8, it doesn't matter if Ghost is bound for hell because he has Goose now, and whatever happens they're in it together. Goose accepts Ghost as he is, she loves him for all his flaws, and she has him body and soul. Lines 4 and 7 feel very much like an admittance from Ghost that Goose really wears the pants in their relationship. She's the one steering their ship, and he's perfectly happy to take her orders. It's freeing for him to put himself into the hands of someone who loves him so unconditionally that she would stand up at the gates of heaven and demand he be allowed in. She'd fight Gabriel himself for Ghost. But he'd never ask her to, because it doesn't matter anymore.
Heaven and Hell are just words, they're not a promise or a reward, or a weight around his neck. He has Goose, and she has him, and that's his heaven. He's free from trying to scrape a shred of forgiveness from a higher power, Goose is his God now.
"When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her"
Yeah Chorussss. We love the grave metaphors for Ghost, very cheeky little backstory nods. He's crawled out of a grave once, and he can do it again. Nothing will keep him from Goose, and the peace that she offers him. What's heaven, what's hell? He can find better rest in her arms, and he will always crawl home to her.
But also! "Lay me gently" GENTLY, he wants to be taken care of. Even in the lowest points of his life. He begs for it over and over between every verse. "Treat me gently, even if I leave it behind give me comfort." Over and over again. He doesn't expect comfort except in death, but by the end I have to think: who's laying Ghost to rest? Goose probably, and she will always treat him gently. Because for as big and scary as Ghost is, he craves softness. He's built tall walls to hide the cracks in his armor, to hide the delicate underbelly, but it's still there waiting to be loved. And Goose loves him, for all of it.
Upside Down Feelings III
Chapter 5: The Flayed
Tumblr media
summary: the scoops troop gets caught inside the russian lab
word count: suuuuper fucken long i’m so sorry (no i’m not)
tw: borderline fluff and angst???
“WE’RE GOING DOWN! WE’RE GOING DOWN!”
“NO SHIT, HARRINGTON!” You and Robin shouted.
“STEVE, LET GO!” You shouted as you continued to free fall even faster by the second. He still had you pressed against his chest, refusing to let go and insisting that-
“NO! I’M PROTECTING YOU-“
Dustin and Erica ran towards the buttons, clicking away amongst the chaos before the room finally came to violent stop. You both tumbled toward, resulting in your face on the floor and Steve sprawled out heavily on top of you, his backside to yours.
“My groin,” He whimpered.
“Get off!” You grunted.
“Give me a second! A titanium box just went directly into my dick.. Jesus,” He hissed. “Dustin! Get this off of me!”
Your brother stumbled over and lifted the box, allowing you both to get up.
“Is everyone okay?”
“Yeah, I’m great now that Russians can’t design elevators!” Steve shouted, shoving the kids out of the way to mess with the buttons again.
“I think we’ve clearly established that those buttons don’t work,” You rolled your eyes.
“They’re buttons! They have to do something!” He argued before twirling around and pressing them individually.
“Yeah, if we had a keycard!” Robin shrugged.
“What?”
“It’s an electronic lock,” You pointed out, walking over to the silver pad on the door to show him. “Same as the loading dock door. If we don’t have a keycard, it won’t operate. Meaning-“
“We’re stuck in here,” Dustin finished.
“Yeah,” You softened your voice as you looked at your brother. Steve ran another hand through his hair before hopelessly closing the button door.
“Just so you nerds know are aware,” Erica spoke up with confidence. “I’m supposed to be spending the night at Tina’s. And Tina always covers for me. But if I’m not home for Uncle Jack’s party tomorrow, and my mom finds out you four are responsible, she’s gonna hunt you down, one by one, and slit your throats.”
“I DON’T CARE ABOUT TINA OR UNCLE JACK’S PARTY!” Steve snapped, slamming his hands on a box. “Your mom’s not gonna be able to find us if we’re dead in a Russian elevator.”
Erica hummed thoughtfully in response, as if to say ‘I hadn’t thought of that’.
“What if we climbed out?” Dustin pointed up towards the escape hatch. You looked at Steve with raised eyebrows. He only nodded.
“Alright, you guys stay down here. We’ll check it out,” He said.
You hopped onto the table, opening the hatch before pulling yourself up. Steve was only three seconds behind you. You stabilized your footing before looking up. The older boy beside you let out a hopeless breath. The elevator shaft went on for what appeared to be ever.
“What’s taking so long?“ Dustin asked as he climbed up. “Oh..”
“What was that you were saying about climbing out?” Steve muttered.
“Oh! I still have my walkie! Maybe I can-“
“We’re hundreds of feet underground and surrounded my metal and cement,” You rolled your eyes. “I doubt that signal would even reach the mall.”
“I have to try.”
“Let him. There’s no harm in trying,” Steve placed his hands on his hips. “I mean, what other option do we have?”
“Fine,” You sighed. “But at least save the battery for when the mall opens. You’d have a better shot at someone being in range then. Try and get some rest until then, alright?”
“You expect me to just rest?” Dustin challenged. “Really? After-“
“Dude, just listen to your sister. Try again in the morning and get some sleep. There’s not much else to do right now,” Steve interrupted. Dustin huffed out a breath before climbing back down into the elevator. Steve extended his arm towards the hatch. “After you.”
Once you all were together again, you all began talking about ways you could open the door. You tried various methods to no avail. Hours went by before you eventually gave up, watching as the children and Robin fell asleep.
“Jesus, that girl can sleep through a tornado,” You finally muttered in the silence, making Steve chuckle.
“Remember that one time she fell asleep while eating ice cream during a shift,” Steve admitted.
“Yeah,” You snorted. “She had fudge on her face for like an hour and kept asking us why people were looking at her like this.”
You tilted your head, furrowing your eyebrows and scrunching your nose. Steve shook his head, letting out a breathy chuckle. You both fell back into silence. It differed from the comfortable silence you sat in only a moment earlier, seeing as you both knew the other was wide awake.
“..Are we going to talk about what happened earlier?” He finally asked.
“I’d rather not,” You muttered.
“Why not?”
“Because it was an accident.”
“An accident?” He deadpanned.
“A mistake. An accident. Call it what you will but-“
“I just wasn’t aware that you could accidentally make out with someone for half an hour,” He smirked.
“Okay, so we’re talking about it,” You sighed, standing up and dusting yourself off.
“What are you doing?” He frowned.
“I’d rather not talk about this with my brother in the room,” You nodded at the sleeping boy and hopped on the table before looking back at Steve. “You coming?”
You waited for him to climb up to the elevator shaft before you began speaking again.
“Okay, look- that kiss..” As phenomenal as it was. “It shouldn’t have happened. We’re still just friends, okay? I don’t want anything to change just because of-“
“Is that how you kiss all of your friends?” He challenged. “I don’t buy it. I mean you’re the one who started it.”
“I started it?!”
“Yeah, you started it!”
“I did not,” You scoffed.
“Oh, Steve!” He mocked, batting his lashes. “Please don’t die! I don’t what I would do with myself if you got hurt!”
“I don’t sound like that,” You punched his arm.
“You’re right,” He laughed. “It’s a little more nasally. It sounds more like this-“
“Why are you such a dick to me sometimes?” You laughed.
“Because I’m constantly fighting the urge to kiss you,” He admitted casually and without hesitation as he ran a hand through his sun kissed locks. “I guess it’s just easier to do when we’re arguing.”
Your lips parted as your eyes danced around between his own, scanning for any hint of a joking glint or smirk. But he was dead serious, with only the familiar faint smile that decorated his lips when he was in your presence ever so slightly decorating his pink lips.
“Look, if it genuinely was a mistake, then I won’t ever bring it up again. We can go back to the way things were, no matter how badly I wanna kiss you again,” His eyes darted down to your own lips for a moment, giving you a moment to object before he took a step closer.
“-But if it wasn’t.. If, by chance,” He let his hands trace down your arms, a shiver following behind them as they slid from your shoulders to your elbows. His touch was electric. “.. You can’t stop thinking about me either..” His voice was now nothing but a whisper as he inched in, eyes locked on your lips as if he just couldn’t pull them away. His silky tongue nervously glided over his own before he let the final words spill from them.
“-Then please don’t ever let me stop kissing you.”
He was so close now that you could feel his breath dance across your upper lip. You wanted to fight it. But it was so hard to think when he caressed your cheek like that. You wanted to stop it- to allow your friendship to return to what it was.
But who were you kidding?
This friendship was built off of nothing but passion. And now that you knew what his lips tasted like, what they felt like.. He was more addictive than nicotine, and boy did you want a hit. His plump lips ever so lightly grazed over your own, but he dared not properly touch you until you gave him your consent.
He knew exactly what he was doing. He knew from the moment you didn’t step away from him. That kiss was no mistake.
You felt the exact same way.
“Fuck it,” You whispered hopelessly before pulling him in and closing the distance between you. Your hands trailed into his hair and under his shirt. His own did the same, hungry to touch every part of you. Desperately trying to close any distance left between your bodies.
His kiss was intoxicating. It was like nothing you’d ever experienced before. Every movement, every breath was made in synchronized harmony. His soft lips massaged your own, allowing every pent up emotion from the past few years out in the form of passion. His tongue slid across your lower lip. You allowed him access without second thought as he walked you into the wall behind you.
He parted from the kiss only to lay a trail of sloppy kisses down your jaw and neck, basking in the glory of those soft, almost inaudible noises that fell from your mouth when he kissed behind your ear.
Your hand cupped his jaw, eagerly bringing his lips back to your own. You continued to kiss, slowing your pace a bit, for a few more minutes until you heard rustling under you.
“Y/N?” You heard your brother’s sleepy voice call. “Steve?”
“We’re up here, Dustin,” You responded, sighing as you pulled away. Steve groaned with frustration before stepping away from you, keeping a respectable distance as Dustin poked his head up from the hatch.
“What are you guys doing up here?” He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
“Just checking for any way to get out,” Steve shrugged. “What time is it?”
“8:00,” Dustin grunted as he pulled himself up. “Mall just opened. I’m gonna try the walkie.”
“Good luck with that,” You patted your brother’s back as you walked towards the hatch.
———
“Code red. Code red. Does anyone copy? This is a code red, I repeat, a code red.”
“God, he’s still at it?” Robin huffed.
“We are innocent children and we are trapped under Starcourt Mall.”
“You wanna handle that or should I?” Steve asked you.
“The Red Army had infiltrated Hawkins, and if we are found, they will torture and kill us.”
“All yours.”
“Hey!” Steve shouted before poking his head out to speak with your brother. “Gotta it easy on that thing. You’re gonna drain the battery.”
“Someone could be in range.”
“What do you think, Petey the Mall Cop is gonna rappel down here and save the day?” Steve grunted as he pulled himself up for what felt like the millionth time that night.
“Alright, why are you such a cranky pants after getting to spend the night with Y/N-“
“Shh! Jesus Christ,” Steve hushed. “I’ve never met anyone that is so invested in their sibling’s love life. It’s kinda creepy. Just give it up already.”
“I heard you guys talking all night.”
“Yeah, we were trying to figure out a way to get out of here while you children were sleeping,” Steve said.
“Oh? And how exactly did making out with my sister help with that?” Dustin raised his brows. Steve paused, looking like a deer caught in headlights. He debated denying it, but he knew by the boy’s look that he wasn’t bluffing.
“.. By clearing our heads? Relieving some stress?” He offered. Your brother scoffed.
“Where’d that get you?”
“Nowhere, Dustin. We’re exactly nowhere and you know, that’s probably just a little bit of the reason why I’m feeling just.. a tad cranky,” Steve walked over to the other wall and unzipped his pants.
“What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m taking a leak. Look away,” Steve ordered. “Look away!”
“Can you redirect your stream, please?” He heard you call with disgust before a series of banging ensued. They listened as Robin scolded Erica before you all fell silent. He finished up, zipping his pants up again and turning around to continue to conversation before you poked your head through the hatch.
“We’ve got company,” You breathed to the boys, helping Erica up. You and Robin climbed up hastily before you all watched Russian guards open the door and carry off the boxes below you.
You pressed your finger to your lips, urging the children to keep still and quiet and Steve got a closer look through the elevator’s grate.
Only then did you realize that Erica had held into the green liquid. You didn’t dare react, not wanting to risk her saying or doing something that would give you away as the men below you cleared out the elevator.
Once the coast was clear, Steve grabbed the container from young girl, jumping down and shoving it between the door and the floor to keep it from shutting.
“Let’s go! Let’s go!”
You pushed the children out before crawling under it yourselves. Steve paused to look at the glass that began to crack before feeling you yank him out only two seconds before the door slammed shut, shattering the container.
The green liquid began to burn through the metal and concrete. You watched in awe at the acid continue to sizzle away before your brother spoke up.
“Holy mother of God.”
You all followed his gaze, seeing a hallway that seemed almost as long as the elevator shaft.
“Well.. Hope you guys are in good shape,” Steve sighed before patting Dustin’s chest and leading the way. “Lookin’ at you, roast beef.”
“… Why me?”
———
“I mean, you have to admit, as a feat of engineering alone, this is impressive,” Your brother said as you all walked through the hallway.
“What are you talking about? It’s a total fire hazard,” Steve argued. “There’s no stairs, there’s no exit, there’s just an elevator that drops you halfway to hell.”
“They’re Commies,” Erica scoffed. “You don’t pay people, they cut corners.”
“To be fair to our Russian comrades, I don’t think this tunnel was designed for walking,” Robin began. “Think about it, they developed the perfect system for transporting that cargo.”
“It all comes into the mall like any old delivery,” You continued.
“Then they load it up into those trucks, and nobody’s the wiser.”
“You think they built this whole mall just so they could transport that green poison?” Steve questioned.
“I very seriously doubt it’s something as boring as poison. It’s gotta be something much more valuable, like promethium or something,” Dustin responded.
“What the hell is promethium?”
“It’s what Victor Stone’s dad used to make Cyborg’s bionic and cybernetic components,” You chimed in.
“You’re all so nerdy, it makes me physically ill.”
“No, no, no. No, don’t lump me in with them. I’m not a nerdy, alright?” Steve corrected.
“Ah, I was wondering when King Steve makes an appearance,” You rolled your eyes.
“King Steve?”
“Yeah, that’s his popular, jock alter ego. The one that’s afraid of losing cool points to a ten-year-old child,” You told the girl.
“Not true. I’m just saying I don’t know jack shit about Prometheus.”
“Promethium,” You corrected. “Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure.”
“Must you always be such an insufferable smart ass?” He grumbled.
“Only when you’re being an intolerable dumb ass,” You scoffed.
“Children, please!” Dustin interjected. “Back to the main topic at hand. It’s probably being used to make something.”
“Or power something,” Robin nodded.
“Like a nuclear weapon.”
“Totally.”
“Walkin’ towards a nuclear weapon. That’s great,” Steve continued to whine. “That’d be great.”
“But if they’re building something, why here?” Robin asked. “I mean, Hawkins. Seriously. Of all places. At the very best, we’re a toilet stop on your way to Disneyland, but maybe that’s it. Maybe that’s our very..”
You and the boys’ steps stuttered to a stop. Steve looked over at you with wide eyes.
“You think the Russians know?” Dustin questioned.
“They could,” You whispered, feeling your heart sink further into your chest.
“So it’s connected?” Steve blinked.
“Maybe,” You looked up at the girls in thought as they continued to wander off without you.
“How?”
“I.. I don’t know but it’s..” Your gaze caught that of the boys’ again.
“Possible,” You all finished.
“I’m sorry, is there something you’d like to share with the class?” Robin called. You all looked at one another with unease before the walkie rang through with Russian code again. You all ran to Erica’s backpack as Robin grabbed the walkie.
“It’s the code,” You recognized.
“Wherever that broadcast is coming from-“
“It’s close,” You nodded.
“And if there’s one thing we know about that signal, it can reach the surface,” Robin smiled. “Let’s go.”
———
“Okay, clear,” Steve whispered, waving you to follow behind him as he led you out of hiding. You’d barely made it out of the Russians’ like of vision as they turned around the corner. You waited until they were out of sight before you began to move again. “Clear, come on. Let’s go.”
“Okay, that was close,” You swallowed.
“Too close.”
“Relax,” Steve brushed off. “Alright? Relax. Nobody saw…”
You all turned another corner to reveal about a dozen Russian soldiers and scientists walking around or talking with colleagues in a large, two story room. White coats, decorated military uniforms, red hazmat suits, guns, and papers all before your very eyes.
You all quickly scrambled behind the box beside you.
“Jesus.”
“Red Dawn,” Dustin breathed.
“I saw it!” Erica told Steve. “First floor, northwest.”
“Saw what?”
“The comms room.”
“You saw the comms room?”
“Correct!”
“Are you sure?” You asked.
“Positive. the door was open for a second, and I saw a bunch of lights and machines and shit in there.”
“That could be a hundred different things,” Dustin deadpanned.
“I’ll take those odds,” You told Steve. He looked at you and sighed, shaking his head at the situation before poking it back out to check out the environment.
“Alright,” He nodded. “We’re gonna move fast. We’re gonna stay low. Okay?”
“Okay.”
You all followed behind him, crouching down as you quickly moved behind objects until you eventually made your way to the outside of the comms room. You waited until someone walked out, catching the door before you all crowded in.
Just as you were about to celebrate, you turned and noticed a Russian soldier sitting in the middle of the room. His eyes were already on you. He took off his headset, standing to look at the five kids frozen in front of him. You stepped forward.
“Tread lightly,” You spoke the familiar Russian phrase, stopping him from reaching for his gun.
He asked a question, using words you’d never heard before.
“Silver cat,” You pointed at yourself and at the crowd behind you. “Silver cat.”
The guard shook his head and spoke again. He was just as nervous as you were.
“China?” You offered. He scoffed, reaching for his gun.
Steve erupted into screams before running and tackling the man into the large computer in front of him. The guard whipped him off, attempting to punch the boy and missing. Steve fought hard, pushing him back and getting back up when he himself was knocked backwards.
You grabbed a heavy, metal microphone as Steve elbowed the guard and sent him stumbling into you. You pushed him forward just enough to get enough room to swing your arm, punching the microphone hard into the his temple, sending him flying to the ground.
Steve breathed heavily, brushing his hair out of his eyes and looking at the unconscious man before his gaze landed on you. “What the hell was that?!”
“Wh- I just saved your life! What do you mean-“
“Like hell you did! I had him!” He frowned.
“Are you delusional?!” You scoffed
“You couldn’t just let him have this one, could you?” Dustin scoffed. “Don’t worry, Steve. You totally had him! You would’ve totally won had she not stole your thunder-“
“STOLE HIS THUNDER?!” Robin interjected. “He was totally about to get his second ass whooping of the night-“
“Thank you, Dustin!” Steve shouted over her.
“I- You- Oh, my God. Whatever,” You shushed the lot of them. “Fine, Steve. You won the fight. Can we please go back to trying to find a way out of here?”
Steve smirked with pride as Robin scoffed, walking up to the guard and stealing his keycard. “This is our ticket out of here. Follow me.”
At the top of the stairs, you were greeted by two doors with large windows, radiating a blue light. Once you got a closer look, you saw a room filled with scientists and made of walls of sturdy glass overlooking a larger room about the half the size of the school gymnasium.
Men with hazmat suits walked around, catering and tending to the machine in the middle of the room. This whole place was obviously meant to house that one machine.
The scientists placed the same green acid you’d found in the elevators into it, fueling the propellor and providing the machine with nuclear energy. The light it emitted was almost blinding as it aimed and slowly cut away at the large, orange, sealed gate in the wall, slowly tearing it open. The same gate Eleven had fought hard to close only six months prior.
A familiar shrill echoed through it.
You looked up at Steve. He stared back with widening, questioning eyes. You only nodded.
“The gate..”
7 minutes in hell, or is it heaven? Part 6
-Please Pick Up-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warnings: eventual smut, fluff, and lots of angst. Billy is an extremely soft boyfriend to y/n
Love confession time from both sides!!!!!
In the Y/n pov, there are some quotes from some of my poetry work, so please enjoy and see how i'm such a hopeless romantic.
Also, it is set several weeks later from the last chapter, so there has been major secret friendship development. Felt if I wrote all that. It would have dragged.
~~~~~~~~~~~
*Billy's POV*
The lawn was trashed with empty kegs and red solo cups, toilet paper littered the trees and house, the smell of sweat, alcohol, weed and throw up was a stale scent everywhere I went while loud music seeps through every corner of the rooms.
Drunken students everywhere, some who I had never seen before making out with each other, random teenagers picking fights with each in the backyard and in the living room. I scoff.
I didn't want to be here. I would rather be with Y/n. Parties didn't feel the same after the last party with her, and her not being here it was boring.
Mumbling in disgust, I avoided people as I best I could, especially escaping from girls that try to throw themselves at me. While I was in thought, a junior bumps into me.
"Watch where you are going, you little shit," I angrily say as I grab his collar, lifting him off the ground with ease.
"S-s- sorry man, I didn't see you there." He says with fear in his eyes.
"Whoa now, Billy, give the loser a break and take a swig of this stuff that Heather brought." Tommy says as he come stumbling through the living room.
"Just don't do it again, nerd." I release him, and he fell to the floor.
"S-sorry again." He said as he ran for his life.
"Tommy, I'm gonna head out, I'm tired of this shit show." I say.
"Dude, you're drunk. You can't drive." He states.
"Fuck off I'll be fine I've done it before remember?" That was the last thing I say to him before I slam the front door.
The drive was longer than I thought. Maybe I should have sobered up some. I pulled to the side, noticing a payphone on the side of the road.
I was thinking about calling Tommy to come pick me up, but he was more inxoticated than I was, so I rang the next best person.
*RINGING*
"Hello?" A tired female voice spoke.
"I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel."
"Billy, are you drunk? What's wrong are you ok?" Her voice was filled with concern.
I shook my head like she could see it.
" Yes, I'm drunk, and no, I'm not ok, I have to tell you something that you don't want to hear.... I wanna be more than friends."
"Hargrove, where are you? Do you need me to pick you up? She asks.
"I'm at the old warehouse, but please let me get this out." I plead.
A small "ok" was only said.
"I need your hands on my body, I need your eyes only on me, I need your smell to engulf my senses, I need your lips on mine. I need to be with you physically and mentally. You're my breath. you're my lifeline in this miserable world. I swear my fucked up thoughts get calm when you stand by me. I feel your eyes on me all the time. The feeling always goes down my spin like electricity. Please tell me you will be mine. Tell me are more than overthinking stolen glances." I finally breathe.
*silence*
"We both know I'm just scared to really date you, but you have me mesmerized. I want to be yours." Was the last thing she said before I heard the dial tone.
*Y/N POV*
Hanging up, I run out of my room, almost killing myself on the stairs. Grabbing my dad's spare Ford Escort keys, I'll thank him later, but now is not the time.
"Love can sometimes be painful. Still, it was the only thing I had ever known when it came to him. All my love I had for him, the only person who gave me butterflies was him. Day and night, all I could think about was him. The only person I couldn't imagine my life without..... was forever him." I think to myself as tire screeched on asphalt.
"Please still be there, I'm going." I plead.
Turning the corner, i saw his Camaro still there. He was sitting on his hood with his head down.
"Thank god" I say.
Billy's head whipping up upon hearing my car, screeching to a stop. His eyes were wide when I tackle him to the ground. "Hmpf," he weezed.
Giggling a "sorry" while placing my thighs around his hips. We are lying in the soft grass.
"William Hargrove, let me explain... your hair, muscles, and body were never that I fell for you harder than before. Sure, they helped, but it was your personality that you've shown me these several weeks. The personality that lies beneath these ocean blue eyes, your captivating voice that melts my insides. The life behind your smile was the reason I fell in love with you all over again. It's like I'm walking into heaven when I see you." I say, breathing heavy.
"I love you, you asshole." I laugh.
Staring up at me, his grip on my thighs with his large hands tightened slightly with my words.
"I love you too, baby girl." His voice breathy as he leans up to capture my lips with his. The kiss was soft but slightly possessive.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He officially asks.
Nodden my head shyly "yes"
"Use your words, princess." He smirks.
"Yes, I would love to be your girlfriend." I say.
He captures my lips once more, feeling the love pour into the kiss leaves me lightheaded.
As I got off of him I stuck my hand out for him to take. "Let's get you into bed, baby"
"Ugh, don't look at me like that, you idiot, you know what I mean." I scoff.
"Not my fault you look so good right now in your sleep clothes." He laughs as he heads to my car.
"He's unbelievable." I thought following behind him.
