Here it is!!! The new and improved Weird, Wonderful and Useful web spreadsheet. Here you'll find:
Useful websites
Websites you didn't know you needed in your life
Quirky, old school corners of the web
Obscure javascript experiments by fun computer nerds
Websites to help out writers
Websites to learn new shit
& more!!
plus! you'll find a list of useful browser extensions & good (legal) free software to use in the second tab.
Because i am a neurotic nerd, you will find:
things are sorted into filterable columns, primarily a category column
I have done my best to test everything in gecko browsers (firefox, waterfox, etc), chromium browsers [derrogatory] (chrome, edge etc) and webkit browsers (safari). I did not test mobile on most stuff because why would you use the internet for useful things on mobile when desktop exists and is infinitely superior in every way imaginable.
I have done my best to note down whatever advertising you might find on the site without an adblocker. that said, get ublock origin today and elevate your internet experience by eliminating ads from the internet.
i have also helpfully told you if the thing requires an account or not.
if i missed something absolutely awesome in either tab, please drop me a line in the replies to this post, my tumblr inbox (sonicenvy.tumblr.com/ask) or by email at [email protected]. i want to know about all the best, coolest, most underground parts of the web.

I work in the power industry and often have to enter private property to survey poles and equipment. When I train new engineers something I teach them is people are often on their guard when we enter a property.
Rich people think we’re there to rob them and poor people think we’re there to turn their power off.
My engineers taught me that being a black man who walks into private property without permission is target practice. As a white woman, I don’t come off as a threat so approaching someone’s house is not frightening to me.
I’ve taught them that it’s dangerous to field alone because I’m subject to harm at all times from men. I often share my stories of harassment and it shocks them.
They taught me that a customer calling the police doesn’t put minority employees at an advantage even though they’re in compliance with their job. Police are a danger to them.
I cried for them. I told my employees that there’s no job, project, person that is above their own life. If they feel unsafe, they leave. They call me. I’ll defend them. I’ll show up. I’ll be mean because I can safely. I have the power to do so.
This shit doesn’t just apply to the internet. Protect your people. There’s nothing more important than the people who work under you. Fight for them. Protect them.
Most of all, leave people alone that are working. Every time we walk up to a door we fear for our safety. Be kind but be vigilant. People who are legit will explain things, give contact information. Don’t assume calling a 1-800 number will validate all the work going on at a major company. Most utilities contract out engineering, construction, and project management. I will wait for the police to show up because I’m within my right to access my easement. If someone is willing to go to that extent, they’re legit. Don’t harass them. We’re just trying to do our job. We don’t give a fuck what you’re doing or have going on because we’re not the law.

"There is a small panel of regulators in every state that holds a similar power over electricity generation and, by extension, an enormous segment of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet. By setting electricity prices, they also have a substantial impact on most people’s lives and pocketbooks. Yet, in Georgia and elsewhere, these groups — known as public service or public utility commissions — get little attention or scrutiny outside of energy wonk circles. Their hearings and documents tend to be long and jargon-heavy, covered in the media by a small group of specialized reporters, making it hard to engage with the process.
This year, Grist and WABE will try to demystify energy regulation in Georgia and beyond. We’ll bring you stories on not only how your power gets made, but how those decisions happen — and how residents who vote and pay electricity bills can get involved."
-via Grist, March 5, 2024. See link for more details (especially in Georgia) and more ways to get involved.

Hey so PGE is having lots of outages in the PDX + area.
Charge your phones, find your flashlight/candles/jar of glow in the dark plastic marbles, consolidate your blankets and pillows into a central location, all that good stuff.

Hey y’all 💋
I am currently in the process of moving to a new location and need to make the final payment for both the rent and the rental truck. I would greatly appreciate your prompt assistance in facilitating these last financial obligations as I finalize my relocation arrangements. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
I have half of the rent but not enough for the full amount. The rent and the rental fees add up to around $650.
If you could share this with your network, it would be greatly appreciated. Any assistance would be helpful.
My Chase account balance is negative and I won't receive my payment until the beginning of May.
GOAL: /$650

Britons have to choose between heating and eating this winter
The UK has some of the most poorly insulated homes in Europe, although the nation was previously a leader in this area. Fifteen years ago, around a million homes a year were retrofitted with insulation and a target was set for all new homes to be zero-carbon by 2016, Big Issue reports.
However, all these initiatives are now forgotten. The UK has pulled out of the race for a low-carbon economy – and working families in need of money will be paying the price. As the cold weather arrives, energy prices are on the rise again, and from this month, people are facing another price hike: a typical annual energy bill will rise by £95 to £1,928.
It costs over £700 a year more to heat a poorly insulated home than a well-insulated one. Yet the government offers nothing to the millions of people living in draughty homes and being overcharged.
The abolition of minimum energy efficiency standards in rented properties and a return to fossil fuel boilers points to a fundamental failure of leadership, according to Big Issue.

Estate revisited
My father passed away (at the age of 83!) in March of 2022. His only heirs were my brother and me. So you might think that all the paperwork that could ever need to be done for his finances WOULD BE done by now. But, no. A cell tower corporation suddenly decided (can businesses get dementia?) to forget all the paperwork we did for them in 2022 and demanded we start from scratch. I was able to get one actual human* to admit that, hey, they DID have some records of all this stuff. So we don't have to redo everything. But I now need to provide them with a notarized letter; ie yet one more trip to town. It's not the worst outcome, but . . . argh!!
'* Thank you, Lisa, thank you!
Also: my husband dealt with the electric company portion of the estate nonsense (fun fact, my father got three separate electric bills because there were farm buildings on both sides of the road that had electric service, plus one building needed 240-volt service for large tools). He told them to keep the bills coming to my late father's mailbox, but change the name on the bill to mine. What they actually did was keep his name and address the same, but start sending the bills for MY house (an entirely separate account!!) to my father's address. I can't even. Just found a nice utility for the steam version of Starbound - this program will let you unpack the .pak files that the workshop mods come in. This is great for making safe (and actually identifiable) offline backups of mods so you don't need steam for them*, and then you can use the workshop mods on the DRM Free version of the game. I'm very glad to have found this because I find it very troubling that so many of the mods for this game don't get a safe download location outside of steam. *I assume, I need to test this myself with the DRM-Free version. Going by a past experiment, though, I'm pretty sure it will work.

I hate to ask, but I need to make rent next week and I'm dry. Bone dry. I had to quit my job two weeks ago due to progressively worsening health conditions that I still don't have a diagnosis for. I'm waiting for several medical tests (full sleep panel at a clinic, an IV ultrasound among other things) and now that my doctor has retired I need to wait for another GP.
My boyfriend is physically disabled and on the spectrum and has not been able to work for several years. I've applied for welfare for the both of us, but we have to go to an in-person meeting AFTER rent is due.
Currently at $30/$852, which is the sum for rent and utilities.
I would appreciate reblogs as much as possible. Paypal @/ariel
I don't have Cashapp or anything else because I am french Canadian and they don't like that.

I'm a disabled queer author. My only sources of income are my benefits package once per month (usually about £1 which covers rent and local tax) and my partner, who is both employed full time and studying remotely at a performing arts school and working on set to try and bring more money in. Both of us also livestream and market online.
This month we've been shorter on money than usual and, because we'd missed the internet bill once before and never been able to pay it back, they've cut us off.
Tumblr media
This, as you can imagine, will have catastrophic effects. Fortunately we have a friend who graciously let us borrow their 4G router until we get our internet back but it's only the bare minimum as the 4G signal in our home sits constantly at 1-2 bars. We will have to shut off everything just for my partner to make a business zoom call tonight. This isn't sustainable.
We've been relatively steady with our income, able to pay off the most important bills on time, but our excess income is extremely minimal so paying back debts is near impossible with the late fees they keep throwing at us. If we can pay this back we'll be safe from this particular danger for the forseeable future, but we can't do it alone.
If you can spare anything, please donate to my ko-fi. The amount on there is a little more than the debt you see to account for things like my paypal overdraft and food we might need to buy over the next few of days (yeah that's how tight we are rn) but you'll be saving our asses.
I don't have much to offer, but anyone who donates even once gets access to all the snippets and sneak peeks of writing I've posted there. Thank you.
