Castello della Pietra
Pietra Castle was built as an outpost for Beseno Castle, which rises above it. It owes its name to the fact that it is located on a large cliff edge, the remains of a huge landslide: the Italian word "pietra" means "stone". Built in a strategic position, it was situated at the border between the county of Tyrol and the Venetian Republic until the 16th century. This area was the scene of battles that went down in history, such as the Battle of Calliano on the 10th of August 1487 or the meeting of Austrian and French troops under Napoleon at the end of the 18th century.

Skiing Birchlegs Crossing the Mountain with the Royal Child
by Knud Bergslien
Depiction of Birkebeiner skiers carrying Prince Haakon to safety during the winter of 1206 has become a national Norwegian icon. The prince grew up to be King Haakon IV whose reign marked the end of the period known as the Civil war era in Norway.

Venice Italy Europe
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. It is built on a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. The islands are in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay lying between the mouths of the Po and the Piave rivers.

Bertran de Born from Dante's Inferno, Canto 28, illustrated by Gustave Doré
Dante shields his face from the horrifying appearance of Bertran de Born, who allegedly fermented the rebellion between Henry III and his father, King Henry II. His brain has been severed from his body even as he severed the relationship between father and son. The engraver, Auguste Pontenier (1820-1888), has placed his signature at the bottom right, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom left.
