I told myself I wasn't gonna post this because it's such a stupid thing to be peeved over but oh well. The whole argument on whether Mike is gay or bi is really fucking dumb because it doesn't matter, his labels are not important, in fact I hope the duffers don't give him a label because he doesn't have to have one, it wouldn't even matter in the long run if he was always going to end up with Will. The important thing is that he does like boys, he is queer, it doesn't matter which sexuality. You don't need to push labels on characters, it's ok to be unlabeled.

saying that mike is emotionally cheating on El doesn't make mike a bad person. It makes mike a kid who's scared to be himself(with good reason) and formed a trauma bond with a girl who he felt he should've liked. mike having a small crush on el in s1 that just went too far is my favorite fruity mike hc.

like, in the beginning, he had a tiny crush on her because she's pretty and cool and powerful and so a small crush developed. but then she (allegedly) reciprocated these feelings and suddenly this went from a tiny crush to an actual relationship.

and mike gets will back, and no matter his crush on el, he loves will. but he's in a 'proper hetero relationship' so we get repress repress repress and comphet comphet comphet.

mike does the relationship things. he tried to appear cool so el finds him attractive by giving up dnd. he told her he loved her. he did all the proper relationship things. this is what 'proper' relationship things are, so this is what i'm going to do.

and in the process he's losing will, his best friend, the person who he's always been the most attached to. he's losing will who was the best thing that happened to him.

but hey! that's what relationships are, right? they matter most, so mike is doing the normal thing.

el tells him she (allegedly) loves him too, and it makes him uncomfy, but he pushes it away. why didn't he like it when she kissed him? why did he like it so much more when wills said he wont join another party?

doesn't matter. they've moved away. and mike pushes it down more.

he's going to visit them in california. will apparently has a crush on some girl, which he's very normal and not awkward about.

before he leaves the plane, he puts his sunglasses on. there's no specific reason he doesnt want her to see his eyes when they kiss, just like there's no reason he puts the flowers in between them which makes them separate faster. that's just a side effect. he goes to hug will, but it feels too weird, even though he can hug lucas and dustin without problems. there's no reason for that, don't think about it.

will has a painting. maybe the painting wasn't for a girl, but instead a gift for mike, will's best friend! or apparently not.

oh, angela? angela is probably whoever the painting goes to. not that mike cares or anything.

he's not avoiding will for a specific reason, it just feels too weird.

he cant tell el he loves her, but that's not for a specific reason either.

oh my god, the painting was for him!

nevermind, this was something el commissioned.

oh, el needs him? he has to stay with her. she matters a lot to him, he cant lose her because of whatever he's feeling. he's in love with her. he has to be.

mike has to save el. she wanted him to tell her he loved her. love at first sight is a good relationship thing to say, right?

el isn't talking to him since the love confession. he misses her. they're probably going to break up. why doesn't that bother him?

Will was crazy for the “and us?” in the rink-o-mania fight scene.

But Mike was even crazier for the “we’re friends, we’re friends!” right after.

Because while implying that there’s an “us” with you and your crush is bold, Mike and Will have been best friends since they were like 7. They’ve known each other for years and have practically been attached at the hip for most of them. Saying “and us” in reference to your very close friendship with someone isn’t totally abnormal. But Mike heard this and immediately stated that him and Will are friends. Which, okay? He never said they were anything more. The reason that we see the “and us” in a romantic light is because we’re aware of Will’s sexuality and his feelings for Mike, but from an outsider’s perspective, it could very well just mean “why are you neglecting our friendship?” I mean, if you think heteronormativity is bad now, image how it was in the 80s. Someone being gay was probably not a conclusion a lot of people would draw, unless they were displaying obvious or stereotypical signs of their sexuality. So then, why does Mike hear the word “us” and automatically think of romantic undertones? Why does he immediately get so defensive and state that him and Will are just friends? Probably because the idea of him and Will being more than that was already in the back of his mind.

Let’s break down good and bad arguments for Midleven

Let’s start with the bad ones

1. They are in love so they’re not gonna break up

There is literally no proof of them being in love. Loving each other platonically? Yes. But romantically no. (Also, even couples who are in love sometimes have to break up if they’re incompatible)

2. They won’t break up a straight couple for a gay one

Well, first time for everything.

3. Milkvan is the main ship! People who have been shipping them since season 1 would get so mad.

First, it’s not the main ship, at least not anymore. Lately Netflix has promoted Lumax and Jopper. Second, there are also bylers who have shipped their ship since season 1. Third, most of the GA would get mad if s5 continues forcefeeding us a ”main ship” that has no chemistry.

4. Mike is straight and in love with Eleven.

Couldn’t he also be bi and in love with El? Well, he could, but if he was confirmed bi, everyone would see who he’s actually in love with (Will).

5. El would be sad if Mike left her for Will

Mike isn’t leaving her for Will. They are gonna break up and then he’s gonna pursue a relationship with Will. Also, wouldn’t Will be sad if Mike just no-homoed him?

6. It would be misogynistic and ableist if they didn’t make Eleven end up with Mike.

It would be misogynistic and ableist to force her to stay in a relationship where she’s not happy in, just for her to become a normal american girl who gets married at 18 and makes babies for her husband without whom she couldn’t live.

7. They wouldn’t leave the main character end up single in the last season.

I know, that’s why Will will get to be with Mike. (Hahaha also yes they would, because they are showing us that it’s better to be single than stay in an unhappy relationship)

8. Mike is in love with El and him saying it 9 times in the monologue is the proof!

So we’re just supposed to ignore their fight about it earlier, where Mike called El ridiculous? And all the lies in the monologue? And how El didn’t actually like what she heard? And the fact that even if Mike was in love with El, it doesn’t mean that El is in love with Mike.

9. Mike and El were in good terms in the end of s4.

No they weren’t watch the show

10. There wouldn’t be enough time for byler to develop in s5 so milkman endgame.

All byler needs now is a few longing glances from Mike, the painting discussion, love confessions and kiss. If they were to make Milkvan a functioning couple, they would need at least 3 more seasons.

And now, for the actually good arguments for midleven:

uf, this is like THE question in the byler tag. personally, idc if he's gay or bi. for me, the best thing is the rep in itself, like making a character who "everyone" thought was str8 queer. i'd actually love they make him unlabeled cuz not everyone has to have a label especially in the 80s. so I'm a queer mike truther!!! between us i lean more towards the gay mike side but, if mike's bi then as a fellow bi, perfect!!! pissing all the biphobes!! good for him. so yeah I've just gone on a tangent here, hope that makes sense!! <3
