"will's only role in stranger things is to be in love with mike" bitch the whole story literally started with will. like, if will didn't go missing, nothing of what happened in the show would have actually happened. "but it started with el sending henry to wherever she sent him and then he kidnapped will-" still, if it wasn't for will, you wouldn't even know about henry. will is the main character, get over it. and about him being in love with mike, you're right about one thing - it plays a big role. and you'll all see why (long story short - byler endgame).

Running my test again as I do every once in a while where I simply ask "would I say that?"
This time, we're going back a ways, not our usual season 4, to the classic Halloween scene! I was thinking about how my PT (who watched the show but has little to no recollection and none of Byler so she's rewatching) said Mike was checking Will out and, placing myself in Mike's shoes,...yeah. It's not just about if it's flirting or not, it's about the fact that as someone who is not a casual flirter, I would be nervous to say it.
I'm imagining myself having a deep talk with someone I liked where we both vulnerably confessed to worrying about hallucinating. If I thought to say "Hey, if we're both going crazy, at least we'll go crazy together, right?" I'd have to hype myself up for a split second before I did. It wouldn't come out unfiltered but premeditated.
And in rewatching the scene, that's what Mike does. And he could have not done it that way. It could have been more earnest. Had it been to himself, like a few of the previous lines, it would have played more as a genuine "on the bright side, we're together" which is still very sweet. But instead, he keeps his eyes on Will. His intention with this isn't to get some sort of comfort or validation from Will this time but rather some sort of reaction from him. We know that because he watches him after he says it until he gives the response he's looking for. And they make sure we see this.
The thing that makes that line flirty isn't the line itself. It's the way it isn't rhetorical. Mike waited until he had his answer to consider the conversation closed, and so so did the scene.

I think Mike and Will’s first kiss should be in a quiet moment with little to no stakes — just a gentle, yet emotional, “hey, I want you to know how I feel” kind of moment. I think it would really showcase how different their relationship is from Mike and Eleven’s because Mike’s big, romantic moments with her tend to be dire or frustrating. His love for Will has never been like that. Sure, there have been dire circumstances, but even in those moments, love was soft and unprompted.

"but they've been building up mileven for 4 seasons!" my brother in christ. el got attached to mike cause he was the first guy her age that she met after she ran away and el was the first girl who showed any signs of any kind of interest in mike and mike felt like he had to have a girlfriend or he wouldn't be "normal". hell, even ted knows mike has zero interest in girls (”our son with a girl?” ), mileven was so forced it's crazy. they were kids who kissed a WEEK after they met because they felt like they had to, at least mike did cause el didn't even understand what the fuck love is. she didn't even have time to understand herself before understanding relationships with mileven being so rushed. it was not love at first sight, mike was ready to send her back where she came from right after she took them to will. mike's life DID NOT start the day he met her in the woods, he was there to find will in the first place. and when they found "will's" body? he literally almost spat in her face screaming ”what is wrong with you?”. and now when they're older, they still don't work. they don't understand each other, they're not giving each other what they deserve, they're making each other feel like they're in a room with no exit. mileven is toxic as a couple and they're SO much better as friends. i rest my case

The meme distracted from it and the rewatches desensitized it but Will canonically said
"I feel like being gay makes me a mistake, broken, like I need to fix myself...until I remember that being gay means I get to love you"
