reasons vol. 2 makes me really believe the duffers are just bad at writing characters

mike wheeler. now they have mike be super caring about will in s1 & s2 only in s3 to have be suddenly be kind of a dick. this would have made a lot of sense if mike was meant to be written as queer. but obviously he wasn’t. he was just a dick for zero reason at all. also fuck them for making mike say that he doesn’t think his life really started till he meet el. that’s so fucking stupid.

will byers- here’s the thing with will, they seem to not know what to do with him if he’s not being affected by the upside down. they just seem to make him sad but he loves his friends so he’s gonna support them! they don’t know wtf he would be like if he’s not sad and suffering so they just make him sad and suffer.

eddie munson- eddie was great character this season. like he fit right into the groups dynamic and him steve robin and nancy were a super fun group. but the duffers refuse to touch the main cast even if it would make sense for those characters to die. how did him dying help? how was that in anyway a good way to end his story? what they killed hik just because they couldn’t think of a way to clear his name? honestly wouldn’t be surprised!

steve harrington- they jsut don’t know wtf to do with steve if he doesn’t have a love interest. i thought part of steve’s develop would be realizing that he don’t need romantic love in his life all the time. that he can still be loved by his friends but no. once again the you need a love interest to be happy trope!

them making lucas, the one black person in the party, join basketball even if he’s showed zero interest in it before

them having robin’s, the one explicitly queer character, love interest be a side character that we get to know basically nothing about

nancy staring at steve and having multiple scenes where it looks like they might kiss and have her cheat on jonathan even though s3 made it seem like nancy and steve didn’t have feelings for each other anymore

Inspired by this post by @renaissancemeetsworld, thanks for the emotional devastation!!!

S1:

Mike does what makes him happy without shame, with his friends that he loves. Both times he plays D&D, Will is there.

S2:

Losing toys is a punishment for not behaving correctly. Thus a conundrum: behave correctly according to parents or lose toys? Or try to behave correctly and also act like you're not interested in toys because it's clear now that your parents look down on you for playing with them still?

S3:

Mike tries to behave correctly, dating a girl. He still tries to be silly, but he gets more messaging that who he is isn't right, it's wrong and embarrassing.

And so he shoves it down. Both sides. He acts more straight and acts like he thinks D&D is childish.

Until he loses Will.

Around El he reverts to shame about liking toys and that is linked to his shame about his sexuality. The story has intertwined those two ideas so closely. Toys and boys. Mike likes both, but he's being told he shouldn't like either.

S4:

Mike is "being more rebellious," doing what makes him happy even if his parents disapprove. He's still playing with toys, playing D&D, and it's the happiest we've seen him in ages. He's still working on the fact that what his parents think is appropriate for his behavior isn't always what's best for him though, and he doesn't get that yet. He is still with a person that he can't play D&D or sing with. He's still missing part of this puzzle of growing up and figuring out for himself who he is and what he wants and if he's going to let other's opinions get in the way of that.

S5: To complete this arc, Mike will figure out that life doesn't have to be a lose-lose situation. He can win. He can be himself, do things that make him happy and be with the person that makes him happy. He can be with Will and play D&D and Nintendo for the rest of his life because that's what makes him happy. He can like toys and boys, and that's okay!

I thought about these "leaks" tonight when I couldn't sleep and I realized how much I actually want this to happen.

Imagine Will leaning down, kissing Mike's forehead so softly only they aren't actually alone. He hears footsteps and then Karen is standing in the doorway looking at them. Will panicks and starts stuttering like he doesn't know what to say. But then Karen walks up to him and puts her hand on his cheek, smiles with tears in her eyes and says:

"You have always meant so much to him, Will. More than you can imagine."

I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW MUCH I NEED THIS TO HAPPEN I AM COMBUSTING!!!

Spoilers for both F.R.I.E.N.D.S and Stranger Things!

Ok but. I was watching F•R•I•E•N•D•S with my family earlier this day, and something notable came up during the episode.

Does this scene remind you of anything, dear reader scrolling through the byler/stranger things tag?

This scene.

For context, the guy on the left is Ross; about to marry Emily, the woman on the left. The one behind them is Rachel, who is in love with Ross.

...yeah.

At first, it seems both Will and Rachel are supposed to accept that the one they're in love with is not with them; and both of them do try to commence with it for a bit.

Now, there is interesting context to be added.

Ross is in love with Rachel. He was since he was a kid. However, they never seemed to work out, going through random drama I'm too tired to explain, and later he ALSO fell in love with Emily, while away from Rachel, choosing to later marry her. But then he sees Rachel again just before his wedding, and during the wedding ceremony, he accidentally says Rachel's name instead of Emily's, causing and inflicting drama, and making Rachel realize he still loves her.

Rachel and Ross get together for good, after ten seasons of will-they-wont-they.

And so - if me imagine Ross as Mike, Rachel as Will, and Emily as El...

Who do y'all think is getting together?

I'm not sure if FRIENDS is on Stranger Things inspiration board or not, this could've been a pureeeeeee coincidence, so let me know if this is the case.

There are much, much stronger arguments for Byler - but I just wanted to make this post as a small thing to notice on the way.
