act iii: final notes

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I FINISHED MY FIRST FULL LENGTH FIC HOLD ON LEMME JUST THROW UP IN THE CORNER REAL QUICK

i am sooooooo normal rn anyways let's get into it thank u for having me on the show, mr. kimmel. i've had a raging headache all day so the content underneath each sections will be kinda short. i'll go through and add more to it once i recover but i wanted to get this up before the week got too busy!

krolia

guys…. im so sorry for the angst….. it was necessary for the plot…….

maybe it’s just me projecting but in the actual show, i kind of wish we had seen more of the emotional fallout that occurred after krolia revealed that she was keith’s mom. because let’s be real here, there’s no way that keith’s traumatized ass would just willingly accept her back into his life. he’d have questions. he’d be in disbelief. it’s hard for him to open up to others and he carries a lot of hurt from being abandoned.

it was crucial in the course of this fic to have that confrontation between krolia and keith. it's not always going to be rainbows and sunshine, and even though they both missed each other deeply, you don't just automatically connect and forget everything that's happened. even if keith hadn't gone into the foster system, he definitely would have carried a lot of anger and hurt towards krolia when she shows back up. i'm sure that things won't just be smooth sailing and they'll need to hash things out multiple times as they rebuild their relationship but that first fight was a big hurdle to get over.

if you’re curious, i have a whooollleeee backstory for what happened with krolia and why she couldn’t get back to her kid. i couldn’t really fit it into the fic but i’ll put it right here for those who are interested:

2000: krolia in the US on student visa, first year of of PhD program

krolia meets heath and they fall in love

2003: krolia gives birth to keith

2008: krolia finishes grad school/PhD program/doctoral degree and applies for a work visa

2009: she and heath and baby keith are living their life but krolia’s parents find out and are like girl you need to come home NOW or we will disown you

krolia’s family are really wealthy and powerful

krolia: i’ll come back for you guys idk how but i will

krolia goes back to the states

2009-2011: she and heath write letters but then the letters start getting intercepted by the family and eventually peters out

krolia in arranged marriage and thinks her partner forgot about her or didn’t care

meanwhile heath doesn’t know what happened to krolia but can’t do anything about it bc she’s in a diff country and he doesn’t speak korean

2011: heath and keith move to texas for job or whatever

heath tells keith all about krolia and how she loves him but can’t be there and obvi that fucks keith up bc he misses his mom but where tf is she? how does he know she loves him if she’s not even there? he's a little kid

2013: heath dies and keith is put into the system

heath has no other family members

krolia put her english name on the birth certificate and so ofc she doesn’t exist in the US

texas social services try to reach out to krolia along with some friends but letters are intercepted

2016: someone reaches out to krolia after she finally gets facebook

friend: thinking of you. miss you. so sorry about heath

krolia: …. what the fuck about heath?

friend: uhhhhhhhh

krolia goes on rampage to her family like wtf u mean u didn’t tell me that the father of my child is dead

cousin shows up with the intercepted letters (official notice from social services, heath’s letters and pictures, keith’s little notes and drawings)

krolia starts the process of legally and financially emancipating herself from her family (she basically was Britney’d)

2017/2018: finally is free and able to get a job in the states

starts tracking down heath (they only had a forwarding address for krolia so they’re like wtf who is this bih)

at this point, keith has already met the shiroganes and changed his name

krolia is in a different state and can only do so much

spends the next few years trying to find him, hires P.I., again keep running into blocks bc social workers and case managers are NOT going to budge on giving up keith's personal information

2023, winter break: krolia reaches out to keith through facebook but it goes into his spam since they’re not facebook friends

allura

what better allegory for sacrificing yourself to save the universe is there than graduating college? in all fairness, i felt like sticking to the notion of allura saying goodbye and leaving the group had its merit, just y’know, i wanted to take a step down from the whole dying thing. i tried to pay homage to the canon material as much as possible while also providing my own spin on things.

one thing that’s been important to me is depicting allura as a college student. sure, while i think most iterations of allura as a kind and a great leader and intelligent are great, even in modern au fics, i just wish there had been a bit more... silliness? outside of her being like the girlboss, the hell yeah supporting character or love interest or bone-tired leader, i always wonder what she would have been like if she hadn't had to save the universe and was just trying to heal on her own terms. yeah, i nerfed her parents in this universe but i tried to showcase her doing normal college things as well, like presenting at research conferences, getting a bit messy drunk, having pizza nights and group hang outs. the funny thing about grief is that life does not stop for it, so you have to just figure things out along the way.

i also didn't want to elaborate too much on her relationship with lotor. she didn't magically heal from that one conversation with lance in chapter 8 but i wanted the readers to get a taste of what was going on in her head through their dialogue. plus, it was a little moment to show how she was allowing herself to open up to other people like lance. no one woman is an island, no matter how much of a bad b!tch you are.

🫧 also, i wanted to include it somewhere but basically, keith knew allura and romelle were hooking up since chapter 14! keith caught romelle sneaking out of allura's room early one morning and he just kept it to himself because snitches get stitches.

pidge

they are so precious to me. they're an amalgamation of 2 of my closest friends, and well, me.

i always knew that pidge was going to be a super important piece in klance development. while lance and keith are great friends, i think pidge played a crucial role in bridging them together in the beginning, before the two of them had cleared up their misunderstandings and made that truce. sure, allura asked them to be on the paintball team but pidge really forced the two of them into close quarters. lance might have extended the offer to keith to hand out without pidge or he might not have. honestly, i'm not really sure. but pidge inviting keith to hang out in chapter 4 was a quiet but big moment because both keith and lance are friends with pidge and will set aside their differences long enough to tolerate each other's presence in a shared space. pidge just has #babyofthefriendgroup privileges.

🫧 i honestly think that after the main two, pidge has undergone the most growth (physically and emotionally) throughout the fic, even though they're a supporting character. we can all benefit from community and friendship but i think pidge needed it a little bit more.

🫧 i partially wrote pidge to represent my younger self, especially when i first attended college. i was scared and alone and i had never been away from home and it was a struggle to form new relationships (and figure out my gender identity. mannnnnn fuck that). it was nice to see pidge find their place and niche among the greater social fabric of college, kind of like comforting my younger self for all the loneliness and uncertainty i endured.

hunk

i love hunk so dearly. ngl, i wanted him to have a bigger arc than he did but hopefully i did a decent job at making feel more well-rounded as a supporting character. i decided to actually kind of lean into this distance in the later chapters as well, esp from lance's pov, as they both got busier. at the end of the day, though, i knew that those two would come back together. hunk is a kind and sympathetic friend and his and lance's friendship will persevere because they're good communicators. their little talk in chapter 17 was me talking to myself and to anyone else who has went through a similar thing where they find themselves drifting a little farther from a friend.

people get busy and that's okay! there will be ebbs and flows in every relationship. even though shared history is a crucial part of a friendship but it can't be the only thing that will keep it going. you need to nurture it and tend to it in order for it to keep it alive and flourishing. hunk understands this and he and lance will be just fine after their talk. hunk is probably the most emotionally intelligent person after adam in the group, and i'm glad he was there to help both lance and keith out when they needed it.

adam

this man!!!!! got i have gotten so fucking attached to adam throughout this fic. he is so dear to me. i know in chapter 10 i wrote from adam's pov and he's a goofy guy in his twenties who's just trying to be a good dad friend but somehow he ended up being a voice of reason and comfort for klance in this fic. lance misses his family a lot and i think adam can not only relate to lance with the homesickness but also lance has started to rely on him a bit like he would with his siblings.

i wanted to try my own spin on adam and keith's relationship. i've seen fics where adam and keith hate each other, don't interact much, or adam takes on a parenting role towards keith as a kid. i wanted to look at keith and adam in the context of two people who both love shiro and then grow to be good friends/surrogate brother-in-law? idk. long story short, adam is very emotionally intelligent and i think he genuinely wanted to get to know keith outside of his connection with shiro and was patient enough to coax keith out of his shell. i tried to write in small ways adam takes care of keith like giving him LactoJoys because Keith likes the taste better than Lactaids, being there for him for his panic attack, adding food to his plate. things that won't draw too much attention, because we all know how keith is about receiving acts of kindness.

i mentioned this in a comment under one of the chapters but all of the advice adam gives keith is either advice i personally received myself or something i wish i could tell my younger self. i hope those words bring you comfort as well!

shiro

i had a lot more planned for shiro but goddammit i had no fucking time or space at this panned out. it's more so klance's story than shiro's.

look, there's a small moment in chapter 18 where shiro is very pleased (and a little surprised) that keith has talked about him with krolia. it has less to do with his faith in keith and more with how he sees himself. shiro has already acknowledged that he has heavy imposter syndrome and deals with his own struggles with self image. it's just always a jolt to your system when someone (could be your own family or your partner of years) validates your relationship.

shiro loves keith very much and just wants to be the best big brother. he has such eldest child syndrome, where he tries to pretend that everything is fine even though things are actually crumbling around him. the thing is, though, you can't build intimacy— real, lasting intimacy and depth in a relationship— without being vulnerable. shiro understands that even though he wants keith to work on opening up, he has to do the same and reciprocate the actions, or else neither of them will really get anywhere and be stuck in that loop of "are you mad at me/i feel like you're hiding something from me/i don't really know who you are."

i tried writing a bit from shiro's pov but i quickly realized that that would drastically change the tone of the fic so i had to scrap it. i might post a little oneshot in the distant future with adashi, though.

keith

🫧 i've talked about this before but although i think keith grew the most as a character in the canon show, that shit was WAY too fast and off-screen. also, i know that the whole found family trope is what drew a lot of fans to voltron in the first place (like me) but is the found family in the room with us rn? i felt like they all started to fall apart or at least weren't as close as the show wanted us to believe. it felt a lot like telling with no showing. other than some occasional moments in the show, the whole #teamasfamily felt hollow.

🫧 i wanted to build on this potential found family for keith's character. he's never had a support system before and he's used to pushing people away but now he has a whole ass friend group that's ready to fight for him if he gives the word.

🫧 initially, when i was writing keith's pov and trying to get a feel for his voice and tone, i struggled a bit. keith is one of those characters that i liked and sympathized with, but getting into his head was a whole different story. i'm more of a lance kinnie but once i got the hand of keith's voice, it was a lot easier. some of my best pieces of writing are from keith's pov! i tried to be as cognizant of keith's development as much as possible as i wrote (think me having various checkpoints for his journey whereas with lance i could just coast on vibes), and i'm pleased with how far he's come.

🫧 although both keith and lance's progress can showcased through their consciousness and thoughts (like duh ur reading from their povs), i leaned into keith's behavior as a way to portray his progress a bit more than lance. things like him being more open to physical affection, not sitting on the outskirts of group dynamics and sticking to shiro, and allowing himself to collect things, which by the way:

🫧 i like the idea of keith's room, once being so empty and ghost-like, is now full of stuff, mementos of his relationships that he's built. i tried to sprinkle in some relics from past chapters (paintball flag, polaroids, ticket stubs), as well add some new tidbits, like shiro giving him a cacti and that korean cookbook!

lance and marco

no i did not just torture lance for the sake of torturing him i would never do that to my boy.

i know this is a fanfiction, but from the start, i wanted to ground this fic in reality and breathe some life into it. lance's little arc with his brother having a substance abuse problem was loosely inspired by events in my personal life.

🫧 i'm not saying that everyone goes through something as drastic as a loved one going to rehab, but as young adults, when we leave home for uni, jobs, other opportunities, etc, there's this worry that something bad will happen while we're away. and often times it does. someone gets sick, a beloved pet passes away, it's all bound to happen. your childhood becomes a thing of the past, and things that you thought would stay the same just won't.

i projected a lot of my feelings onto lance ngl, and writing him work through his own grief and guilt over not being able to be with his family when they're going through a crisis helped me process a little bit more.

although lance had a happier ending than a lot of families might get in reality, i still wanted to show lance having a support system at college and realizing that he has a second family to lean on, and people who love and support him. he doesn't have to pretend to be okay for anyone and that's okay.

black paladin lance or as close to it as i could get

it was so important for me to make lance the new captain of their paintball team, as a stand-in for the black paladin arc he could have had in the show. he’s always been a selfless guy who puts others first and really pulls up when he needs to. he deserves to be recognized for that. not only did every single one of his friends validate him, but the person he looks up to the most literally endorsed him. lance struggles with his inferiority complex and the election scene was a little feel good moment for me, personally, so that he could receive the acknowledgement he deserves, especially with his growth. he's gonna be an awesome team captain (he'll be shuffling down to shiro's room at 2am covered in hickeys and talking about paintball strategies).

wrapping up loose ends

i tried to wrap up as many loose ends as possible and give all the characters a proper send-off. originally i wanted lance and hunk to also move into the house in castle street, like repurpose the basement or something but i realized that that just wasn’t possible because most college basements don’t even have heating or like,,,, a livable arrangement.

ultimately, i think it makes sense for pidge to be the one to take up allura’s room at the house. pidge has lived a single during the academic year but they also had lance and hunk right fifty feet away so it’s not like they REALLY lived alone that year. there was also the logistics of the house having a vacant room, and as much as i would have loved to have all of voltron under the same roof (hunk and pidge sharing a room, keith and lance sharing a room), i think they would kill each other. pidge filling in the gap felt like the right move. and lance and hunk are gonna be over a lot anyways, so it’s not like much has changed in the trio's group dynamic.

🫧 what was your favorite chapter to write?

i think i have different chapters in mind for different reasons, even if it's a copout answer. here are the chapters that are dearest to me:

chapter 4: recalibration this is the chapter where i really got to play around with character interactions. keith and lance's worlds were beginning to integrate in chapter 3 but in this chapter, i got to explore different friendships, like keith & pidge and lance & hunk, and the dynamics they entailed. you can see how important these friendships are to both lance and keith, and how their connection with others eventually helps them to reflect on their previous feelings toward each other, like "hmm maybe i've been too harsh with the other."

chapter 10: let's go to the beach the group dynamics were so solidified to this point, and it was so fun to write. i loved writing from adam's pov and being able to zoom out and showcase klance's relationship progression.

the winter break interludes i waxed poetic about these in a previous faq but to reiterate: i'm really pleased with the way each individual chapter turned out. i love a good character study, and it was a great challenge to my writing and characterization to dig deeper into their home lives and see how the past confronted the present, where their respective childhoods were brought into the light, and how long-held notions of belonging, home, and identity were challenged and remolded.

chapter 17: warm and light my beta reader drunkenguac said that this was some of my best writing and i've been coasting off of that validation for the past 4 months. keith's reunion with his mother was especially cathartic for me. as an adoptee, writing this chapter honestly helped me work through some of my feelings about my adoption as i pictured what it would look like if i was ever reunited with my birth mother. i'm very fortunate that i didn't have to go through the same experiences keith did, but i tried to imbue as much humanness as possible into his section.

chapter 18: moving on it just felt like a proper send-off, the one that we never got from s8 of voltron. i wanted the last chapter to basically have this vibe of "hey, things won't be the same but it's going to be okay because we have each other." when shiro tells matt in the end, "we'll still be here," that's me as the author, telling you, the reader, that this fic will still be here whenever you want to revisit it. it was a comfort to write and i've heard that it's a comfort to read, which is so so so gratifying. when i set out to write this fic in august of 2023, i didn't have any plans of grandeur or even expect like more than 100 people read it— it was just a passion project that i decided to share, and i'm glad that others have sought safety in it. outside of fandom, this fic is a love letter to my own college experience. i remember reading a college au fic when i was still in high school and lonely and closeted and repressed and wondering if i would ever be able to get out of my hometown and find a community as tightly-knit as the fic portrayed it. in a way, i got to reflect on my college experience by writing looking out for you. i find solace in this fic when i read back over it, and i can see aspects of my adventures throughout my freshman and sophomore and junior and senior years, waving from behind a thinly veiled curtain.

anyways that's me rambling for now! thank you again to everyone who has tuned into looking out for you. this is the first piece of creative writing i've done in a long time, and i never expected to actually finish it. i'm so happy with the way it turned out and the love it's received. until next time!

She kinda blasts her voice all through the headspace & into our minds when she talks and she is VERY loud but that's expected ig since she embodies the spirit of a city and all. and also Logic again actually, it's not Weird per se but he slurs his words a lot usually as a side effect of our last Big Psychosis Episode™. Also shoutout to Esprit who primarily speaks through barking and other animal sounds, love that 4 you but pleaze stop barking directly in my ear when u front AIAJSJSKD OH MY GOD I FORGOT ABT RHETORIC he sounds like he's choking when he speaks. Epsiode 4 time babeyyyy

Uhhhhhhhh yea, you know what, I think I wont touch the timeline for now at all and save it for after I finish the season and rework my notes

We start right where we left off, both here and in the OG and just have Aphmau go to the clearing, it'll probably take a bit longer in my version to add a sprinkle of tension in there but she ultimately makes it without any issues

The scene of Aphmau reading the journal is pretty much the same, Im just removing that mention of Minecraft obvs

The scene of the two mystery fellas knocking her out and talking a bit is fine too, maybe I'll have them talk a little bit further away from Aphmaus unconscious body but thats a minor detail

Like in the OG, shes kinda confused and upset for a moment, notices the diarys gone, decides to steal the desk and gets back to the village. Shes been unconscious for a while and its night time now

Zenix catches her when she arrives at home, says what he says in the OG, maybe he even escorts her to her n Emmalyns house im not sure yet

Wether he escorts her or not, she wants to check on Garroth as well and also talks to that Paul guy which plays out pretty much the exact same way

(Also, I didnt remember the plot point with the villagers literally getting more aware the more Aphmau does so I didnt account for that at all, I'll rework it later)

Her exchange w/ Garroth stays pretty much the same as well (minus her accidentally punching him ofc) and she promises him to put his seeds to good use

Its late so she goes to sleep, maybe she talks a bit to Emmalyn again

She has a dog in OG at this, I might give her one later but not now

Aphmau plants the seeds first thing after she wakes up

After that she decides to try building a farm for the goats and potentially other animals, I'd really like for her to start on her own and maybe struggle a bit but then one or two of the villagers come over and help her with it

She manages to get one goat in there and wants to find another one for them, but the villagers convince her to take a break

Aphmau starts either walking around the village again or lays down somewhere in the grass idk, the point is shes making some plans for refurbishing/repairing that abandoned house and reflecting a little on everything, maybe finally thinking about how she doesnt remember anything n stuff like that

So far I had been imagining her wearing just kind of a generic practical medival-vibes outfit which she also had when she woke up, and I'd really like her to have an outfit change into something a bit sweeter, maybe a bit more feminine. So I thought it would be neat to have like, a dressmaker or amth approach her and ask to measure her so they can make her an outfit as a thank you for everything shes done and then she wears that. I'd also really like her to maybe get lil accessoires from/representing each of the (important) villagers to show how shes affecting them and theyre affecting her in turn n stuff

i just want to be a simple gender deviant farmer and craftsman doing my own thing comfortably without the pressures of capitalism.

i want to wake up and have a routine that feels like second nature and i can look forward to it.

my dream is for there to be crops and a few livestock like sheep or goats (not for the meat i wouldnt be able to do that), an animal sanctuary i establish (non profit), a workshop (and forge?) with lathes and tools to maintain the farm and work on creative projects for fun or commission, and a cozy farmhouse i either build or renovate myself. and of course my cats are going to be living their best lives on the farm. i know they're both very much indoor cats, and thats fine. im sure i could make a small area connected to the house for them to be able to go outside without worrying abt them getting lost or afraid of the other animals.

i dont want to have to worry so much about money and if ill be able to afford to eat or live. i want to.... god what do they call it in that one book you read for english class..... live off the fat of the land?

and i want to be able to like... share that slice of peace with others. friends and loved ones and maybe i could start some sort of youth program, have some "troubled" kids be able to come to my safe farm space and learn abt farming and wood working and coping and just get to chill out and basically volunteer to help me out around the farm bc id love to help other ppl discover a passion too and i know my bodys just going to get worse with age so im sure running a farm and stuff by myself wont be easy.

haha unfortunately though that sure would require a lot of money to even get started on. the cost of land and moving alone? too much for my minimum wage casual/temp work income. i cant even afford to move out from my moms house haha..haha...ha.....

How do you think Gentry, Goofy, Cyber, Kitten, and Moonpaw could possibly subvert expectations?

Is this about gentry's posts yesterday because I'm still mad about corruption so...

Gentry- expectations get subverted frequently anyway, the devil is in the details as it were. I know things about those stories well in advance but other details surprise me- I didn't think AfO and All Might would be in the same place in Anyone yet because that was implied to be an bad ending scenario. I didn't think Ascendent izuku would just get no answers during Kamino after such a canon divergence there. Etc etc

Moonpaw- idk hit someone else with the DfO stick, all these aus are pretty different so I guess that's the only expectation

Cyber- tbh I don't even have any expectations for cyber so there's nothing to subvert. Every day I have no clue what the tree will create. Every Showman detail is a twist in a ride I don't remember getting on.

Kitten- the only one who tells me more details than Gentry, my expectations are subverted frequently in brainstorming sessions because I don't know how she manages to somehow add Even More Angst and Even More Fluff and Even More Comedy to things

But really, to be less tongue in cheek, a lot of what I said about Gentry is true of all of them. It's about the details, not the broad concepts, that throw me for a loop

•When Sonic came out as trans Amy started questioning her own gender because she's like "wow sonic is such a pretty boy" and then she thought "wait I would look cute as a girl- HHHH WAIT I THINK I'M A GIRL" so she came out as trans not long after Sonic and him and Amy are even more closer than they were because they understand eachother better

• Because Amy hangs out with Shadow, he learns to bake and cook food. So when he gets better at it he stress bakes/cooks. Sonic is like, "Shads why did you bake like five different cakes?" "I had a break down at the store leave me alone".

• Speaking of Shadow, he got some good ol' therapy! He is working to better himself and everyone is all proud but won't tell him because he'll get pissed off b/c they brought it up. Rouge and Sonic are the ones who bring it up and he doesn't get too mad

• Sonic is those brothers that say drugs are bad and will teach the younger children that they shouldn't cause it's a no no. One day he saw Tails holding a cig and asking what it is and Sonic slapped that shit to the floor. "Sonic! Why did u do that :(?" "Tails that's bad. As your older brother I must push you in the right direction!" Sonic says no drugs

• Knuckles sometimes, when him and Rouge are in a good mood and not fighting, he teaches her some of the traditions of the tribe and Rouge really enjoys it. One time Knuckles was talking about something about the tribe and Rouge was like "Oh that was that thing you do in your tribe right?" And he was shocked she even remebered something so small he mentioned and it was sort of the start of his crush on Rouge because he saw the bat in a different light.

• To add onto the HC above, when Knuckles starts realizing his crush on her, he teaches her traditions on how to show your love for someone you want to impress or what to be with and Rouge is just thinking like "uhhhhhhhh he's not trying to impress me no no no wayyyyy." And Knuckles is thinking " dont notice pls idk how to speak about my feelings she's gonna make fun of me" All in all they're both useless bisexuals in love

• Sonic reminds Shadow of Maria sometimes because of how positive and bright he is just like his sister. Sonic not knowing this sees Shadow smile for no reason and his heart goes OOP-

• Sonic has ADHD (because I have it and I love Sonic) so Tails always knows how to handle his issues with it like when Sonic is overstimulated about something he's there for him when he needs a break.

• Also adding to the head cannon, Sonic helps Tails with his autism. They both love eachother so much and would do anything for the other. Plus Knuckles and Amy also try to understand Sonic's ADHD and Tails' autism because they want them to feel safe in a healthy environment

• Tails made Omochao because he wanted to test himself to see if could make an AI. Omo can do alot of things that the regular Omochao does but more advanced and has more of a personality aswell as feelings. Omo loves LOVES Tails and helping with his projects and Tails never realized how much he needed the company when Sonic, Amy or Knuckles wasn't around so it all works out. And he's a little LESS annoying but still an annoying babe none the less

Floyd

“Is Little Shrimp playing a game? Then I’ll play too!”

He gives chase when you run, finding it amusing - someone notices Floyd energetically going around and asks him what’s up

“Azul…? I’m looking for Shrimpy!” “I see… Are they aware you’re pursuing them?” “Dunno, but I'll squeeze 'em once I catch up~”

Yeah, Azul probably knows about your crush and shyness, but doesn’t bother interfering with Floyd’s good mood. If he did it’d mean one less waiter for today’s dinner rush.

Instead he flashes the Leech Twin a smile. “Good luck!”

It’s a surprise when you jump out of the window, but Floyd adds on to it by taking a running start and following suit.

“Whoa! Y/N, what- Floyd, no!”

“Annnd they’re gone.” “He can’t tell Y/N is running from him, can he?” “Who knows? I don’t think he cares either way… Man, professor Crewel’s gonna be pissed.”

Jade

At first Jade thought you were nervous around him because of intimidation or fear, but soon considers that there might be a different reason behind your behavior…

He has his fun sneaking up on you. “Good afternoon, Y/N.” “J-Jade?!” “Yes, how- They’re gone. This was even quicker than last time, fufu…”

Yes, he’s taken to keeping a timer on him and marking your fastest records for fun. Floyd calls him weird for not just catching you since he probably could, but Jade just smiles and says this was more interesting.

He continues to observe you for a bit, but even he was taken off-guard when you leaped out of the classroom window that day as if your life depended on it.

Well if his interest wasn’t piqued before, it certainly was now… Jade might just have to plan a meeting with you sometime soon. One that you won’t be able to evade, even with your physical prowess.

Ace

Ace wants/tries to talk things out but you always manage to run away before he gets the chance to (and dammit, how are you so fast? He usually stops chasing you halfway through once he realizes it’s a lost cause.)

“What the… I just want to talk about whatever the problem is! Why’s Y/N avoiding me so much?” “Maybe the prefect got tired of you.” “Maybe ya need to give ‘em some tuna.” “Not helping!”

He’s not even sure why he’s so agitated about this

Ace might ask around for advice but everyone’s inputs are either irrelevant or too cringey to bother with.

He eventually decides to leave you be and give you some space, but three days in you guys were having class and got partnered together.

Then you jump out the window upon meeting his gaze - that was the last straw. No more avoiding the issue or holding back! Ace leaps out and follows after you: this was gonna be resolved today!

Sebek

The guy barely realizes that you’re avoiding him at first, instead too busy worrying about your stunts and if you’d get hurt from them.

“Even if Y/N is athletic it is good to exercise caution! What if they sustained an injury from jumping out of that window?!”

Tries to talk to you about it because your actions sometimes causes disruptions and there’s a chance that Malleus could be caught up in the ruckus.

Which just makes the situation worse, since you’re too shy to face him and just books it whenever he calls out to you.

Sebek finds out that you only run from him, which brings a new string of concerns - maybe he’s offended you somehow? Now he wants to find you even more to figure out what’s wrong.

Someone helps out upon noticing that Sebek seemed a little down, maybe suggesting ways for him to reach out to you or passing on a message.

Malleus

Malleus thought that your friendship was going well, but then you start evading him in an almost panicked fashion...

He tries to shrug it off at first; maybe this was just a temporary phase.

Then he enters the library one day and sees you there. Malleus was contemplating between approaching you or not when he hears the sudden creak of a window opening.

You jump out of it, not before nervously glancing in his direction

Your face looked a little red as well - were you mad at him? Have you started to hate him? Or perhaps he’s done something to make you avoid him?

Malleus gets a little down about this, but decides against pestering you and potentially making things worse.

It’s up to Lilia or one of the others to help (a sulky fae prince is never a motivating sight to see) - it quickly becomes clear that you were shy and crushing on him, so the situation should be resolved soon enough with a little push or two.

Really thinking hard about how to handle Sebastian in the new climax crisis mod because when I initially made no seb climax crisis (as my *checks* third published mod, five years ago) I was really dissatisfied with what I was able to accomplish with the options I had available for modding back then.

I’ve talked at length before about the problems I have with Seb’s content in the climax but it mostly boils down to 1) quite a bit of it feels more like hamfisted movie villainry than a meaningful emotional response and 2) since Sebastian is dlc (and not even day 1 dlc), the entire scene is structured around the assumption that he won’t be present by default, and thus most of his dialogue, rather than contributing meaningfully to the conversation, insists of him shouting into the void while no one reacts.

I’m trying to come at this with a fresh outlook and not reference any of the choices I made in the past. But, anyway, here’s what I’m toying with rn. Feedback appreciated.

I removed most of his lines from my mockup of the dialogue so that approaching it I will be making decisions about which lines to add in rather than which lines to remove, but I’ve already decided to retain the following exchanges in the conversation following the chantry boom.

Orsino: The Circle didn't even do this! Champion, you can't let her! Help us stop this madness! Meredith: And I call on you to keep order! After what just occurred, you cannot deny what must be done. (or) Meredith: And I demand you stand with us! Even you must see that this outrage cannot be tolerated. Sebastian: Why are we debating the Right of Annulment when the monster who did this is right here? (But this then segues back into other npc reactions which are normally skipped if Sebastian is present)

Also this:

Hawke: Was that... why you needed me to distract the grand cleric? Sebastian: This? This is what you tried to trick me into doing? Sebastian: And you went along with him! Anders: If you knew what I was doing, you would have felt honor-bound to stop me. I couldn't take that chance. (or) Hawke: Was that... why you needed me to distract the grand cleric? Sebastian: You were... part of this? Anders: If you knew what I was doing, you would have felt honor-bound to stop me. I couldn't take that chance.

Also this:

Anders: The Circle is an injustice, in many places beyond Kirkwall. The world needs to see. Sebastian: Elthina is not the Circle! She was a good woman, and you murdered her! Orsino: You fool! You've doomed us all!

It’s the second part of the conversation that’s more problematic, in which Hawke and Anders have a big long back and forth conversation while the camera periodically cuts to Sebastian, featuring absolutely no one reacting to anything he says.

Thinking about moving a few lines around if I can find places for them that flow better, ex.

Hawke: Opinions? Sebastian: He should be killed on the spot. With the templars busy, there is no one who can contain him until a trial. Sebastian: If I'd been in that chantry today, would you be waffling? You know what must be done!

Then there’s the tricky part, which is actually dealing with Hawke letting Anders live despite Seb’s objections. Most of Sebastian’s “im gonna go to starkhaven and raise an army to return and destroy you all for harboring this criminal” dialogue is absolutely unusable lmfao. Admittedly, I can theoretically cut down existing audio lines now so some of them might be partially salvageable, but I’m not counting on it.

The best existing objection (which I ended up using in the first mod) is

Sebastian: You condone this? The brutal death of an innocent woman of faith? Someone you knew! Who trusted you!

Then I want to add a third option to the dialogue wheel (which I wanted to add five years ago but didn’t know how to make it work perfectly at the time) so, thus:

Choice #1 (text): ? something something bigger picture ? won’t undo what he’s done ? need all the help we can get ? idk Choice #1 (dialogue): 6195829 I'm sorry about the grand cleric. But there's much more at stake. Choice #2 (text): 6087747 Stay out of this. or 6144517 Stand down. Choice #2 (dialogue): 6182459 Do not interfere, Sebastian. Choice #3 (text): 6182489 Fine. Anders dies. Choice #3 (dialogue): 6182488 He's right. The grand cleric deserves justice.

No edits made to the scene if you kill Anders. (And credit where credit is due, I do think that exchange is well-written)

Hawke: He's right. The grand cleric deserves justice. Anders: Yes. I would not deny anyone's right to that.

The paraphrase for the other existing option has been changed, and if you tell him to fuck off he will still leave and you’ll never see him again (though uhhhhhhhh hopefully less looking like he’s being set up to be the sequel villain). This line is probably staying, at least:

Sebastian: I gave up on Starkhaven to serve the Maker, but He has turned his back on Kirkwall for harboring heretics like this.

The first option is the one that will allow him to stay if his end-stage questioning beliefs has been completed, otherwise it will segue back into him leaving. This line I miraculously found hanging out in another conversation is such a godsend for that:

Sebastian: By Chantry law, these mages must be contained. But Elthina, bless her, feared Meredith as much. Sebastian: I will stand with you, Hawke.

Though that’s only useful if Hawke sides with the mages. In the existing mod when Hawke sides with the templars and Seb qualifies to stay I believe it goes

Hawke: Help me restore order. Anders: Fight with the templars. Against the Circle. Anders: Perhaps that is the only way to make this right. Stop this war before it's too late. Anders: If you think that is a better atonement than my death, I am with you for so long as I can maintain my grip on the monster inside me. Sebastian: It will never be enough, but it's a start.

Which might still be the best I can do.

As for setting the end-stage questioning beliefs as the threshold for Seb to stay, I think that’s perfectly consistent with everyone else. Aveline, Merrill, and Fenris are now always stay if you side with their preferred side, always stay if you side against their preferred side and you’ve completed their end-stage, and never stay otherwise. Anders is always stay if you side with the mages (and ask him to stay), always stay if you side with the templars (and ask him to stay) and you’ve completed his end-stage rivalry, and never stay otherwise. Seb would be always stay if you kill Anders, always stay if you refuse to kill Anders but have completed his end-stage, and never stay otherwise.

Admittedly, Aveline, Merrill, and Fenris all give you a chance to recruit them back in a later conversation (and the vanilla threshold is that they’ll agree if they’re not between 50%-100% rivalry), but if you side with the templars you have one chance to keep Anders or else he’s gone for good, and I think that’s fair with Seb as well.

So obviously uhhhhhh most of what’s left to do is cobble together a collection of lines of dialogue for the Seb stays/Seb goes exchange that actually feels like a real conversation. Which is the difficult and subjective part. But being able to commandeer lines like “I'm sorry about the grand cleric. But there's much more at stake.“ and “By Chantry law, these mages must be contained. But Elthina, bless her, feared Meredith as much.” help a lot at least.

Anyway that’s my rambling on my current thought process out of the way lmfao thanks for reading.

Oooh yay! Okay so she’s not actually mine — she was created by @hopefullypessimistic84 , who I always have read over anything I use Julia in for characterization consistency — and I’m sure Hope will have more to add but here’s what I’ve got!

First off, for those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about: Hope found a camper in one of the old photos and adopted her, and now she is one of my favorite characters ever. She shows up pretty frequently in my writing bc I love her.

Dis one.

Anyway! Here’s a bunch of random shit — some of it was invented by Hope, some of it is my hcs (can you have hcs of an oc version of an extra? Idk but I did it) — and I hope someone finds it mildly entertaining:

She met David and Jasper in their first summer at camp, so they’re all about the same age; if anything she might be a year or so younger but it’s all quite close, and I imagine they went through the same years in school.

She doesn’t live near David — if we’re placing him up in Canada she’s somewhere in a relatively large city near the American border. Depending on if you put Camp Campbell on the east coast (my hc) or the west (what it probably actually is), she most likely grew up in NYC or Seattle.

She’s more like Jasper than David: not super bubbly, not all that into nature, and very suspicious of anything Campbell related.

I’m pretty sure she’s an only child, but it doesn’t matter because she adopted David and Jasper as her brothers and 1000% thinks of herself as their sister.

She’s an ace lesbian, and somewhere on the butch spectrum. Depending on my mood she’s either a fat leather butch or a tiny elfin tomboy, but no matter what she’s short and has a motorcycle jacket.

Actually it’s spoilers but who cares because it’ll take me forever to get there: she’s actually going to fall in love with another OC, this time one I made up! She meets Gwen’s sister Audree through incredibly awkward in-law interactions, because Hope and I decided to mash our OCs together. Their relationship is a little ….complicated, because they’re so dissimilar, but it works.

I’m pretty sure Julia ends up being a professional photographer. She lives in (see city mentioned in #2) but travels a lot for her job. What kind of photos???? Uhhhhhhhh no idea; my brain is thinking like corporate somehow, or real estate? Something more practical than artistic, but Hope would probably know for sure and I don’t know dick about photography.

Her job and long distance means she doesn’t get to see David (or Jasper, if it’s an AU where he lives) a lot, but she keeps them all in touch with the aggressive tenacity of a bulldog.

She’s very colorful and generous with her profanity.

If you hurt someone she loves she will kill you and no one will ever find your body.

She is made of sarcasm and a surprising amount of rage.

She grew up extremely poor (not sure what the family situation is but I feel like it was a 1-parent household), so even though she ended up being very successful she still carries a lot of trauma and mindset from spending her childhood not having enough to really get by. (This is probably the major cause of content with Audree, who grew up rich and then got richer.)

I don’t remember what we were thinking about Jules’ grown-up haircut, but her natural color is definitely purple.

She calls David Davey, Sunshine, and Red. I don’t know what she’d call Jasper and Gwen.

She probably stopped going to Camp Campbell after Jasper died, either as her own choice or because her parent(s) pulled her out of it, but as an adult she does make a point to visit David there at least once a summer on the anniversary of his death. (Listen we came up with this before we found out what happened to Jasper; cut us some slack here re: canon.)

She didn’t grow out of her pop-punk-emo phase, she grew into it.

I don’t know if she actually rides a motorcycle or just likes the look, but I like to think she at least bought one.

Nothing makes her flustered except pretty girls.

I don’t think she reads that much, but I could see her being a movie buff. Though tbh I really see her as whatever you’d call someone super into music.

Did she skateboard? Does she? I feel like she would.
